hellooooo! I hope I’m not bothering you but your writing inspires me! I really love your Bakugou fics because you characterize him well. I find myself rereading it over and over, finding details that went through my head the first time lol. It’s so difficult to find genuine Bakugou fics because every time I look through tumblr I sometimes find some… interesting fics who take Bakugous character and change him dramatically to the point where I don’t even recognize him, you know? Idk maybe I think too deeply about these things but it’s just something I noticed! But I have deep appreciation for your effort and care to place him in any story and keeping him himself as much as possible!

With that being said, I was wondering how you approach writing? How do you develop your characters?

Omg i have so much to say in response to this… i feel like this is gonna be a long ass response and i have just started writing it so omg sorry in advance (edit: IM SO SORRY YOU DO NOT HAVE TO READ ALL OF THIS)

Also i was going to put this at the end to respond to things in your ask chronologically but i had no idea I’d write so fucking much on the topic!! But omg i would LOVE to see your art!!!!! It’s so sweet of you to want to draw me something that’s genuinely the sweetest thing in the world it makes me SO emotional omgggggggg please…….. no pressure at all but any time you want to share please stop by and do so i would love to see what you’re working on

But omg NO it is absolutely no bother it is very kind of you to say that!!!! I am very glad you think his characterization is solid it’s genuinely one of the things i worry about most when writing (not just him, but any character)!!! I think he is such a difficult person to characterize. You’re right there are many many interpretations of him and i think that there is validity to all of them to certain extents because they all draw on aspects of his character that he expresses outwardly. But there is so much inside him that it like…. Idk i think it’s really difficult to get his nuances right. (Not that I’m saying i do all the time—and def not saying that my characterization is like Better Than Others at all it’s just the way i interpret him!!!!!)

He is a harder character to develop than others because i feel like you have to be on three levels when you write anything he says or does:

1. What is his gut instinct? His knee-jerk reaction? This is always influenced by things that are harder to control for him, so like anger, frustration, pridefulness, proclivity for violence. From there,

2. You move on to consider where he is in his life/what he’s been through and apply that lens to those knee-jerk emotions. So the way i usually write him, he’s older, he’s been to therapy to some extent lmao, he knows techniques to bite back anger or tamp down frustration, this is going to affect the way he knows he /should/ feel (just found out my Ctrl key isn’t working LMAOOOOOOOO so please pretend those are italics) despite the way he /instinctually/ feels. So he’s going to apply this the best he can to how he reacts to things. The deeper the gut instinct is, though, the harder it is to cover up, so you measure how much control over his actions he is able to apply depending on how distressed/angry he is.

Okay brief pause before three because this is where the internality ends, and you have to figure this out before you apply it externally. You want to have an idea of what he’s feeling /exactly/ before you run it through his thought process and decide how he would express it externally.

3. So then the last part is the external level: what’s actually shown on the page in his dialogue, actions, and body language. So we have a man here who so desperately doesn’t want to show his vulnerable emotions to other people. He has an ‘image’ that he wants to portray because it’s how he wants people to perceive him (strong, unbothered, powerful, he doesn’t /need/ anyone because he’s /so/ strong and powerful, he’s embarrassed when his friends show him love because it’s in essence weak to accept/show love so freely—remember the lack of vulnerability here—and he’s the best at everything he does, ever, no question). With steps one and two, you have the gut emotion and how he knows the gut emotion should be handled. Now you have to ask: how can he express this and make himself look like the image he so wants to project?

This is fun to play with because, as we know, he often fails at portraying that image. He’s an awkward person. He was never socialized well. When he’s not feeling entirely confident and self-assured (think post-fight victory, when he’s doing his hero thing that he /knows/ he’s good at), he’s bad at hiding his more vulnerable emotions. You just have to decide from here how badly he fails at projecting the image/how well the character he’s speaking to knows him and can see underneath it.

So example: 1. kirishima and him are walking, kirishima puts an arm around bkg’s shoulders, he’s embarrassed but does feel the warmth of having his best friend care about him. Gut instinct here is to shove kirishima off because he’s embarrassed, but doesn’t want to show that he’s embarrassed because that’s ‘weak’ behavior > 2. Knows he shouldn’t shove kirishima off of him because he’s just innocently expressing affection for bkg because he cares about him, and rejecting that affection so vehemently could potentially hurt kirishima’s feelings > 3. The image dictates he doesn’t look ‘weak’, but his reason dictates that he doesn’t hurt kirishima’s feelings. So he rolls his eyes maybe, plays at shoving him off—to show that he’s not weak, that he doesn’t care about people caring about him—but lets kirishima keep his arm there because he really does appreciate his best friend caring about him and he never wants to make Kirishima think that bkg is actually angry because of the affection shown to him.

This is a really hasty example lmao i knew if i did anything more specific it would make the ask like six times longer lsdfkjdlskdfjdslkjf but you apply that and then to degrees, peel back how much the image means to him. So in in the dark of morning (hate being like oh look at this part of my fic! But that’s the best way i can use an example i know well) at the beginning when he’s driving her to his apartment, he’s hurting bc of all might’s health decline, hurting bc of denki’s death. But he can’t yet show that vulnerability, so he upholds the image of being a gruff n tough guy who doesn’t care about anything at all. But when they’re talking during the gala in front of the picture of all might and he’s worried that he could never mean as much to reader as denki meant to her, he’s able to claw past his need to project that image and is able to offer a form of vulnerability and openness, but it’s tentative and hesitant because he’s not used to showing himself as anything other than the image he’s created for himself.

God i know that was just how i approach writing bakugou. I am SO sorry it got that long Jesus Christ. I just have a lot to say about it dlksfdlskfjs but essentially that’s how i approach writing all characters to an extent. 1. What do i know about how they would gut react to things 2. What experiences/training/factors of upbringing in their life affect how they know they /should/ act 3. How do they want people to see them and how does this affect the way they finally act/speak/etc. Some characters the steps matter more or less for, but they’re always there somewhat. Like step 3 i think outward perception always shapes actions to an extent, but like. When i write Mina, if she’s just with her friends, step three has absolutely no bearing on what she does and says. She’s very open and is unapologetic about it. When i wrote wolfwood for this fic i just published step 2 was also barely a factor because even if he knows how he /should/ act, it means very little to him because he doesn’t care much about how anyone perceives him (except for reader). Bakugou is harder lmaooooooo he takes all three steps to the MAX and that’s why i think interpretations of him vary so much because there’s so many areas where you can decide that he would react/feel a different way to various external stimuli.

Anyway GOD sorry this is long as HELL but i really wanted to put all my words into thoughts. Thank you SO SO SO much for that ask….. like getting to talk about writing ever is so special to me and the fact that you wanted to know about my process is like…. Im like omg. So honored to be asked about it and so happy to talk about it. Okay, so… what the hell.

I was already in the middle of writing a thank-you post because I saw that you reviewed most of my writing with your comments, reblogs, and overall energy—but THEN you hit me with reblogs AGAIN and an inbox message, and now I just? Excuse me while I die.

First of all—who let you be this nice? I'm being force-fed serotonin in the form of words. Thank you. Like... I need to process in real time.

"Obsessed with a capital O" – This alone... Because, let me tell you… I am the one obsessed. With you and your ability to make me feel like I've actually done something right with my writing.

"The way you write Daryl is chef's kiss" – Do you understand how much that means to me? Daryl is my favorite character ever for personal reasons, and the fact that you (a fellow writer, a talented person, an awesome creator) think I captured him well? I need a moment.

But the worst (best) part? You're a writer too. And not just any writer—a popular one. So now my brain is all like: Why is she hyping me up so much when she has a massive reach and following? What alternate universe did I wake up in?

You have a whole fanbase. You could literally just blink at a blank document and your fans would be waiting for you to write the first word. Meanwhile, I'm over here, trying to crawl back outta my Tumblr grave, because I had stopped writing a few years back and only came back about half a year ago.

You have no idea how much this means to me. Writing is hard. You know that. It can be lonely. It's staring at a screen, sometimes being convinced everything you've written is absolute shit, and then posting it anyway, hoping someone, anyone, will love those fantasies we think of. And the fact that you, of all people, are not just reading but actually engaging, and making me feel like my words are worth something—that's insane. i'm lowkey touching upon this kid in the ross fic i'm working on rn (well, his conception lmao) but i'll chat about him here!! i think after eilidh, you and ross decide the scottish names thing is fun for your kids, and when your little boy is born you guys call him keir <3 and he's very like eilidh in that he's such a happy little baby, smiling all the time! unlike eilidh, who has your eyes, keir is just a carbon copy of ross - eyes, hair, dimples, (and when he gets older) height... you may as well have not been involved in shaping this child's physical attributes, so little does he look like you. keir is quite like you personality-wise, though - although he's very sensitive, he and his sister both have your stubborn, slightly argumentative streak instead of ross' calming vibe, and keir is really into drawing and creative stuff from a really young age. he does a drawing of his dad and his uncles when he's like three that ends up on merch and possibly even some album art and absolutely as tattoos (it made them all cry when keir toddled over and showed them it in the studio after he'd drawn it lol). and i think he likes music, too - he's around it so often that it would be kinda impossible if he didn't lol. i actually think keir is mostly a piano kid, although ross has taught him bass basics, and so many other people at school end up having crushes on him when they're all older because of it - sweet, dark-haired, sensitive artist/music-y boy? please (a certain one of his uncles claims he taught keir everything he knows in that regard. literally nobody else agrees). he's also a really sporty kid though, football especially. ross takes him to games from a young age and loves kicking a ball about in the garden with him whenever he can; ross also spends every free saturday morning at keir's kiddie league games, cheering him on from the sidelines at 9am in the freezing cold in a gilet (dilf!). but yeah, sweetest little boy ever, spitting image of ross - that's keir <3

🙋‍♀️ Do any irl people know you write fanfic?

Yes! I'm actually pretty open about it. My husband knows the most about my stories as far as plots/specifics, and I've offered to let him read if he wants, but he's not much of a reader in general so it hasn't happened yet 😂. My mom also knows and is the most supportive person ever, so she's always encouraging me with my writing. When I first started writing UTNL, I remember her saying something like "I can't wait to read it when it's done!" (she's never even seen Inuyasha) and I was like omg you are the absolute sweetest ever but also nooo mother you will not be reading this story that is chock full of porn that I wrote, thank you very much😂 😂 😂. I think all of my closest friends also know that I write fic, I just don't share many details about it. Other than that though, I don't generally tell people I'm not super close with.

💖 What made you start writing?

I remember loving to write when I was kid. Writing prompts at school were my favorite thing ever, and I wrote a handful of super angsty emo kid short stories while I was in grade school. But once I got to high school I just...stopped? For whatever reason, as I became an adult I came to the conclusion that writing was something I was no longer capable of doing. Then after joining the Inuyasha fandom at the end of 2020, I started having ideas for stories that I would jot down in my phone with no intention of actually trying to write them. But after seeing how incredibly kind and encouraging this fandom is towards new writers/artists, I ended up saying fuck it and just decided to go for it!

❌ What's a trope you will never write?

Hmm...I guess I can't see myself ever writing something with mating and/or soulmate marks. I like the general idea behind them, but when I explore the idea of mates/soulmates in writing, I prefer to do it in a more abstract way. Like feeling that intense pull towards each other that makes them feel destined to be together, without having actual matching soulmate marks. Or finding ways for them to share a lifespan without the standard mate marking process. I have no problem at all reading stories with those tropes, and have seen them done really really well, but it's not something I'll probably ever write myself. Also, in general, I probably won't ever write a full story that's focused on any other Inuyasha ships besides InuKag, because I'm a basic bitch when it comes to shipping😂.

🎉 What leads you to consider a fic a success?

My answer is actually pretty much the same as yours! The greatest measure of success for me is my ability to reread my own work and enjoy it for years to come without feeling the constant urge to edit and/or cringe. It's honestly pretty rare because I feel that way about a lot of what I've written (even when I know I shouldn't, but my brain is an asshole and will always find something to put myself down about). But, for example, Chapter 13 of UTNL is something I can still read and mostly just feel really proud of, rather than 'oh god I can't believe I posted this publicly, MUST GO BACK AND EDIT'

I do also tend to eyeball stats on AO3 more than I'd like to admit...but the ones that mean the most to me (besides comments of course) are Bookmarks and Subscriptions. Knowing that people want to save my fic to return to later on, or actually want emails in their inbox telling them when it's updated makes me feel like I've accomplished something exciting! It depends on the fic though, because there are some that I genuinely pretty much ignore all the stats on because I wrote it completely for me and if anyone else likes it, that's just a bonus (such as The Lover's Tree and I Loved Her First).

1st we have Charlie and Jonathan

These two have been best fucking friends since the playground days

Charlie literally would beat up bullies for him to defend his honor

And Jonathan was just so timid when they were younger so she felt like she had to protect him

Especially from Tommy because fuck him

Season 1 & 2 she puts this poor man through so much shit

Season 3 is no better

I have this AU in mind for an alternative season 3 ending and it’s significantly sadder cause why not

He’s like constantly worried about her

it’s been that way since they were kids and he just kinda got use to it

He quite literally can’t tell her no

Sometimes though he likes to let her lose on the public because people really just piss them off

And it’s not like they don’t deserve whatever fresh hell she can release on Hawkins

Next we have Charlie and Nancy and these two together are so so much fun

First they both like guns so some times they just go shooting cause why not

They leave Steve and Jonathon at home to do whatever it is they do and they pack a bag full of ammo and snacks to set up their own shooting range in the woods

And they have the best times out there

They just recently became friends again after like years of not speaking to eachother

Cause like pre season 1 Nancy and Charlie did not get alone because she hung out S1 Steve

And Charlie kinda hated Steve

they’re good now though

But she’s dating Jonathan now so they’re two peas in a fucking pod

They are like fericely protective of eachother and it’s like the sweetest thing

Charlie would definitely take a bullet for Nancy and vice versa

The season 3 hospital scene is just them taking turns fucking her boss up

Now for Charlie and Steve LMAO

Season 2 and kinda season 3 Steve and Charlie and just—

Charlie comes up with the worst ideas and most of the time Steve just goes along with it like “omg she’s a fucking genius”

And everyone just goes “no????”

these two together are like so stupid????? Dustin gets a headache sometimes being around them

But like Charlie is actually a nerd so sometimes when they’re ‘babysitting’ Steve has no idea what’s going on he just likes being there

But when they’re together OMG they make so much noise

And the days when for whatever reason they’re not together Billy Steve literally walks around like a kicked puppy

It’s something the kids point out and he just goes

????? What no shut up

Even though it’s very obvious to LITERALLY EVERYONE that there is something there

Both of them are just too stupid

And they all wonder when he will figure it out but at this rate when they graduate college

Charlie and Billy

Charlie is very much unaware of the effect she has on Billy and it literally gives him a heart attack almost everyday

And she’s kinda touchy??? Not that he minds but he just isn’t use to it???

He’s not use to someone being so open and honest with him 24/7 and it kinda throws him for a loop

But at the same time he can’t get fucking enough of it

And she’s so smiley and nice and pretty and everything he’s not use to and he just can’t tell her no to anything because of it

She makes him feel like she’s loosing his edge

But like that’s okay because it’s only every with her

Anyone else and he’d beat the living shit out of them

But also he finds her absolutely terrifying??

Because season 2 she like almost shoots him with a shot gun

Then last but not least we have Charlie and Robin

There relationship is something I haven’t got to touch in yet with my fics but

The jist is they get along too well and Steve absolutely hates it

Whenever they’re together they just poke fun at him and he just feels betrayed

Also whenever Jonathon is not around she’s in charge of Charlie

if you were in dead poets society..

okay hear me out; i totally get the vibe you'd be keating's daughter, it just makes a lot of sense to me alright. you've got such an artistic and thoughtful mind, so it's super fitting that your dad would be the captain himself. it's through him that you end up meeting the poets. you're in his office, probably due to him staying late to mark some essays; whilst he's working, you're curled up on a chair with a hot drink and a book, sitting in a comfortable silence. when there's a knock at the door. surprise surprise, it's the poets! they're there to ask a few more questions about the dead poets society, wanting to know more about your dad's escapades when their eyes land on you. they certainly were not expecting to see you there, and now they have even more questions.

amongst all of this chaos you'd certainly catch a certain person's eye - that person being steven meeks. you know when he sees chris and just. stops and stares in awe. yeah, it's very that. the others are hounding keating with questions, but meeks can't take his gaze off of you, how pretty and at peace you look. he quickly snaps out of it and gives you a nervous smile, pushing his glasses further up his nose and forcing himself to put his attention on your dad. charlie takes it upon himself to invite you along to their meeting tonight, boosted by the other's encouragements and pleas (even keating pushes you to go, under the promise he neither saw nor heard anything about these plans). and how can you say no? you meet them that evening, for a night full of poetry and laughter, and the rest is history.

from that night onwards, you're super close with the poets. it's not uncommon for them to visit keating's office or classroom when you just so happen to be there, and you're an official member of the dead poets society. you also get closer to a certain red-head. listen you're both painfully in love with each other and everyone knows it. it's through the constant encouragement of neil, charlie and knox that he finally confesses in the most awkward yet endearing way, asking you if you'd like to go on a date sometime, and you can't accept quick enough. yes, the boys definitely obnoxiously cheered and whistled, did you expect anything else from them? you're now the power couple of the group, i'm sorry it just happened and you can't do anything about it.

i think - asides from meeks - you'd be super close with neil. i just think you'd vibe really well together, and he'd always want you to come along to his plays to support him. he'd also tell you about how much meeks gushes about you when you aren't around, giving you many interesting stories about him before you got together. meeks doesn't need to know about this though.

cute dates with meeks include museum dates, movie theatre dates, theme parks, the lot!!! he knows you love the weather just after a storm, so after you both watch the rain slowly die out and the clouds begin to clear slightly, he's dragging you outside to take in the atmosphere, not caring about the wet grass soaking both of your socks. he'd also LOVE to watch you play hockey, and is so so supportive of you - he makes sure to learn as much as he can about the sport and its rules so he can be as supportive as possible.

8 (what artistic medium do you use to express your feelings?): I like to branch out and experiment but first and foremost I’m a writer. I love anything from fictional stories to poetry. I love pottery as well though!

16 (what’s your favorite pasta dish?): A good carbonara is heavenly 

40 (think of a piece of jewelry you own: what’s it’s story? does it have any meaning to you?): I have a ring from my great aunt (my grandmother’s sister) that she gave to me before she passed away. 2. Is there a trope you’ve yet to try your hand at, but really want to?

I just answered this so I’ll go with another one: long-distance relationships. More specifically, online friends eventually turning into something more until the moment they finally meet. Guaranteed to make me soft every time I read it. I did a tiiiny bit of it in one of my fics but it was only some background story I mentioned, but I’d love to do a fic based on this trope.

3. Is there a trope you wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole?

Not sure if this is a trope or an au (idk I’m dumb when it comes to these things), but omegaverse is something I wouldn’t write and usually tend to avoid reading, too.

5. Share one of your strengths.

Uhhh I don’t know if it’s a strength, but what I *do* like about my writing is the introspection bits of my fics, where I get into a certain character’s head and try to think as them. And I’d like to think I’m getting better at characterization? IDK AAAA

10. Which fic has been the easiest to write?

wrap yourself around me (i admit defeat), this Shiragoshi I wrote for someone really special to me happened in pretty much one sitting, even though it took me way longer than that to edit and be happy with it.

Also when i see your light shine (i know i’m home) !! It practically wrote itself when I was supposed to be working on the longfic you’re reading now dksfjf

13. What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever come across?

I just answered this too but I have more advice: the dumbest, shittiest draft can become an amazing story. Just because you don’t like how it came out at the first try, doesn’t mean it isn’t good. You can’t perfect something that doesn’t exist in the first place, so just write whatever comes to your mind and the rest can be edited later. (The person who wrote the actual advice worded it way better than me but this is what you get dfjsdl)

28. Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.

This is the reason why it took me so long to answer this ask. I debated whether or not to add friends on this list because I admire each and every one of my writer friends, and I didn’t want anyone to feel left out but I’m actually gonna do a separate post about that laterTM. Since this only asks for three, that’s what you’re getting.

@worthlesspride (DeathBelle on Ao3). The reason why I fell and never got out of Shiragoshi hell, and if you’ve met me I’ve *begged* you to read Plumage. She could make me ship anyone with anyone, and her writing is just so good. Pick any of her works and you won’t be disappointed. I haven’t had the time lately to read her two latest fics (anyone’s, actually), but I don’t even need to read them to know they’re good, I loved everything I’ve read from her anyway.

@lavendori (lavendori on Ao3). Her characterization is always so on point and the way humor comes through in her stories is really good. If you haven’t, please please read is that your heart on my sleeve? or her ongoing Tsukikage fic! Also, she’s the sweetest, talking to her is always a delight.

@lozza342 (Lozza342 on Ao3). I love her writing because she can go from melting your heart with the fluffiest fluff to shredding it into pieces with the angstiest angst (also her smut is so good). My absolute fav from her is Make it Work but I love everything she writes, even when she makes me cry. And I love her, too!!

37. Talk about your current wips.

OOF. I have over 25 wips but the ones I’m actively working on rn are:

A Kenhina collab with Jules - Kenma’s a streamer, his neighbor’s cat starts visiting his apartment every day and eventually he meets the cat’s owner, sunshine impersonated aka Hinata. It’s dumb and v self-indulgent just like I love my fics.

A Shiragoshi omg they were roommates longfic, also a collab with an artist!! While there’s still fluff, it’s more hurt/comfort with musician Shirabu and gay disaster Goshiki.

A Goshikin short and dumb and extremely self-indulgent story based on Loz’ Spring Flower. Dm on discord me if you want a snippet just for you.

And I made this too long already so I’ll stop here but I have tons of wips I love talking about if you want more;;

1) Hiya! Honestly I think it would be best to get comfortable with more realistic proportions before you branch out into cartoon/anime style! I did it the other way round and I regret it a lot, bc I think it made my foundations really shaky and inconsistent. THAT’S NOT TO SAY u have to master the traditional art style before u start drawing any cartoons though!! I think it’s fine to do them together, just don’t neglect traditional anatomy and all that, bc it will help you a lot in the future regardless of the style you eventually choose to stick to!

2) OH I googled around a bit bc tbh I have no idea what they are called too, and I think it’s called the terminator/ half tone?? it’s basically the bit of colour between the light and the core shadow (the darkest part of where the shadow starts) 

THe coloured outline of shadows that alot of artists do is an exaggeration of how it looks in rl but it is pretty neat bc it makes the object look like it’s glowing haha

1) I like using poses from magazines to study anatomy!! I either follow blogs that post magazine scans or I buy them myself when i can! Another thing I’ve found rly helpful was using fitness books/ videos as references… like those for muscle-building/ weight lifters, where there are diagrams of which muscles are working for a specific exercise. YOUTUBE has a lot of fitness videos, just type xxx workout, pause the video at any random frame, and u should be able to get a nice reference to study muscles with!! If u want references for the muscles themselves, some good books I’ve found helpful are: Strength training Anatomy and Anatomy for sculptors (I can give them to you off anon if you’d like)!
