star-uncrossed [jackie x jan] - pinkgrapefruit
A/N - this is a prologue of sorts to ‘i do like you’ but it’s mostly just more jackie and jan fluff featuring my favourite dialogue ive ever written. hope you enjoy it! <3

They meet on their first day of college and fall in love. Okay it’s not that simple but they do meet on the first day of college and they do fall in love.
Jan didn’t read the email properly.
(She’s from Jersey, screw it, she knows New York and she doesn’t need to read some stupid instructions to find her way around.)
She didn’t read the email properly so she ends up outside the Lillian Verge school for International Relations even though she enrolled in Tisch and quite frankly she’s just incredibly confused. And then she meets a sweet girl with dark brown hair and a loosely Canadian accent and she finds herself feeling a little bit less lost.
“You okay?” The stranger asks with a kind smile. “You seem lost.” And Jan smiles because goddamn, only she could be a damsel in distress in a city that she’s known for years.
“Just a little,” she admits as she stares at the name on the buildings signs - hoping maybe they’ll transform and she can just walk into her 10 am seminar on Performance Movement.
The pretty lady chuckles and bows her head. “What school are you in?” She asks, “you don’t strike me as an international relations student.”
Jan wants to be indignant, play the can’t judge a book by its cover card but she’s dressed in tight leggings and a pair of worn Nikes with a hoodie from her last regional theatre performance and a dance bag slung over her shoulder. She takes a second to look over the brunette and realises that if Jan doesn’t look like an IR major - she most certainly does. She has a white button-down tucked into a pair of light-wash-straight-leg jeans with a beige and red silk bandana in her hair and a leather satchel.
“Tisch,” Jan responds, doing a little twirl for emphasis because if she’s going to be seen as a ditsy blonde theatre major she might as well do it right but the response isn’t what she was expecting.
“Damn, you must have real talent.” The brunette says with genuine sincerity.
Jan decides she wants to marry her on the spot.
The woman pulls out her phone and fires off a quick text before she looks at Jan again. “I was just letting my friend know I’ll be late for brunch,” she states quickly as if it is normal to adjust brunch plans for someone you have never met before and then she grabs her wrist and starts walking.
It’s a fourteen-minute walk down ninth street followed by a three-minute walk down the second avenue in which Jan learns both everything and nothing about the stranger. She learns she’s supposed to be meeting her old pen-pal for lunch near Parsons because she’s an international student from Paris, that she’s fluent in French and Farsi and that she’s lived alone in New York for two years since she turned sixteen because she values life experiences over possessions.
In return Jan lets her know that she’s allergic to shellfish, will do anything for a smoothie and is gay as all hell prompting an in-depth discussion about the rights of LGBT people across the world, a topic that Jan was vastly underprepared to discuss at 10:03 on a Tuesday.
They arrive at Tisch with a start and out of breath but Jan has to stand there a minute longer before she can brace herself to go in.
“You look like you carry a pen,” Jan says, causing the Brunette to raise an eyebrow (although she reaches into her back pocket and produces one anyway). Jan grabs her hand and scrawls her number on it in a veritable chicken scratch before she hands it back.
“I’m Jan,” she says with a smile and an open palm.
“Jackie,” then non-stranger replies.
(Jan starts her first semester at Tisch on a negative grade. It’s worth it.)

Jackie texts her at three in the morning asking if she’d like to go for a smoothie tomorrow and Jan replies asking if it will be postponed due to her inhuman kindness.
(Jackie responds not to bite the hand that feeds you but she’s delirious and there is definitely a french word thrown in there somewhere.)
The brunette is laid across the end of Nicky’s bed waxing poetic about Jan’s blue eyes as she had been for three and a half hours and the Frenchwoman is getting very close to kicking her longest friend out of her dorms and forcing her to walk to her own apartment for the night but she knows there would be no point.
They’ve been pen pals since they were seven having long rambling conversations in french through decorated envelopes and sticker-covered letters. As they got older the letters for longer and they evolved into care packages too. Boxes would arrive full of foreign candies and stationery and a book here or there. One year, close to Jackie’s birthday, Nicky sent her a pair of fluffy socks and the letter she received back was tear-stained.
Nicky runs a hand through Jackie’s hair and sighs.
“”This sounds remarkable simple you know,” She offers up with a wry smile and exasperated tone.
“Yeah but it’s not,” whines Jackie in response as she rolls onto her front and lets out a dramatic sigh. “She’s cute and blonde and knows about gay rights.”
“I’m cute and blonde and know about gay rights,” Nicky reminds her.
“Yeah but you’re french,” Jackie responds with her tongue stuck out.
“God. you’re like Romeo and bloody Juliet, what was it - Star crossed lovers?” Nicky grabs a shirt out of her draw and tosses it so it lands on her friends head. “You’re making it so fucking hard for yourself. You’re basically star-uncrossed lovers. There is literally no issue.”
Jackie presses her face into the duvet and moans. “That made no sense you french son of a bitch.”
“Yeah, but you understood me.”
(She did and she’s not happy about it. The whole thing is refreshingly uncomplicated and that makes her very nervous.)

Jan wakes up and texts Jackie that it is raining. It’s not that she’s never encountered this before - she just feels the need to share it with someone and Jackie seems appropriate.
Jackie sends back a smiley face and a request for the address of Jan’s dorm and when Jan responds, she tacks on that she will meet her in the lobby at eleven.
Looking at her purple alarm clock, Jan has the realisation that it’s ten am on a Wednesday and she is yet to leave her bed so she rolls out of bed, hits her hand on the drawer of her bedside table, yanks her phone off the charging cable and takes herself to the bathroom she shares with the rest of the floor before deeming that her hair does not need a wash.
(It probably does but it’s dyed a much lighter shade of blonde than it is naturally so she doesn’t want it to fade and she’s not feeling a cold shower this morning.)
By the time she has dressed herself the rain bounces a few inches off the ground and the roads have turned into rivers which is why it is all the more adorable that Jackie meets her in the lobby with a massive black umbrella. She holds her hand up (she’s written Jan on it in black marker) and waves like she’s in an airport which only makes the blonde scrunch her face up in happiness even more.
“Morning!” Jan exclaims with a huge smile and an enduring positivity.
“Morning Jan,” Jackie smiles back, linking their arms and settling the umbrella above their heads so they can walk through the automatic doors and onto the still busy streets.
They banter and bicker the whole way through smoothie bowls whether it’s over the best Disney film (Jackie says Beauty and the Beast but is entirely willing to watch them all with Jan to make sure), guilty pleasure foods (Jan waves her EpiPen as she raves about cocktail shrimp) and their respective majors.
By the end of it, Jan’s learnt her fingers fit perfectly between Jackies and she’s just about ready to put down a deposit on a three-bed two-bath house in Harlem.
They wander home in the early afternoon sunshine, fingers loosely intertwined and Jackie realises quickly that they could count quarters together and she’d be entertained.
They kiss in the lobby and Jan watches the way Jackie’s eyes flit from her lips to her eyes and back down before going in for a second. And then a third. And her mouth tastes like cherry and somehow cinnamon and she doesn’t think she’ll be able to get a smoothie again without recognising the taste.

“It’s so easy,” Jan moans with her head on Gigi’s lap. The taller girl is paying very little attention to the blonde but still cards her fingers through her hair occasionally as she sketches a blazer.
Gigi goes to Parsons but her accommodation got messed up so she ended up next door to Jan and they became friends rather fast. Gigi would define friends as someone she tolerates and Jan would define friends as her heart and soul so they both get everything they want out of the situation.
“Has anyone ever told you you’re an emotionally distant bitch,” Jan asked over pot noodles the day they first met.
Gigi smiled and said thank you and that was that so now Jan is disregarding any requests for personal space and is quite happy to just exist in Gigi’s gorgeously decorated dorm room and pilfer the french candy that she gets from a ‘friend’ who Jan happens to know is very loud in bed.
“I really don’t see the issue,” Gigi replies, looking down at the blonde with a raised eyebrow.
“I didn’t expect you to,” Jan states passively. “But thank you.”
“Anytime. Now stand up so I can measure your proportions.”

A/N: It’s here!!! Like I said before, this fic will be a lot lighter and more humor-based than DOPE, so that you have some variety! 3k words.
LOST IN TRANSLATION ↳What do you do when you have no qualifications but want to see the world? You help teach English in a Korean primary school, apparently. ↳Principal!Jin, math teacher!Yoongi, PE teacher!Hoseok, English teacher!Namjoon, school nurse!Jimin, art teacher!Taehyung, and science teacher!Jungkook.
CHAPTER ONE ↳You arrive in Seoul and begin to meet the teachers you’ll be spending your whole year with.
You hover awkwardly in the arrivals foyer, consulting your phone again, reading the email you had been sent a week ago. According to the information given, there should’ve been someone there for you already, waiting to drive you to the school.
But no matter how often you glanced around, up on your tiptoes as you tried to scan the massive area of Incheon International Airport, you couldn’t see any signs with your name on them.
Oh shit, you thought, what if they’ve written my name in Hangeul? You sigh and begin another dutiful look-over, deeply focused on the countless signs with Korean characters on them, trying to recognise ones that would make up your first or last name.
You just about jump out of your skin when someone taps you on the shoulder out of nowhere.
“Are you Y/n, here for teaching?” He’s younger than you were expecting for a schoolteacher, although you remember the email stating he was in charge of physical education and the rec sports teams, so maybe it was better to have someone still pretty fit. And he definitely was fit. Although he was in a grass-stained polo shirt and basketball shorts, he had a contagious smile and kind eyes, and his dark, wavy hair was endearingly a little bit messy.
Clearly you were looking over him for a little too long, because he smiles sheepishly and pats down his shirt. “Sorry about the messy clothes. I came straight from practice.”
You frown, hoping your Korean will be at least coherent if not entirely correct. “But it is 8am.”
He gives you a wide beam and laughs a little as you get through the sentence one syllable at a time. “Yes, soccer practice is from 6am to 7:30 on a Monday morning.”
“Oh. The kids still play soccer when it is very early?”
He shrugs, beginning to lead you towards the carpark area. “Actually, we have 6am sport every day of the week. Soccer on Monday, basketball on Tuesday, swimming on Wednesday. You get the idea.”
“And you teach all sport teams?”
“Your Korean is fantastic, you know?” He chimes the final part in a cutely accented English, and you blush at the praise, shaking your head modestly. “I teach almost all of the sport teams. Technically the mathematics competition team is classified as a sports team, but Teacher Min does that. You’ll meet him later.”
You nod slowly as he talks, a little overwhelmed by how fast he’s speaking. You had studied the language for five years, but all of the other teacher’s assistants you had spoken to had said a thousand times how when you were finally confronted by a native speaker in that country, your mind went blank and you forgot every single word.
It was what you had been obsessively worrying about on the whole red-eye flight over, and you were lucky that some last minute studying had made you feel a little more confident in your abilities.
He comes to a stop beside a shabby Nissan, unlocking it and gesturing for you to get into the passenger side. It smells like sweat in there, and you can see a random assortment of various balls and other equipment stashed into the backseat and boot. “Sorry about the mess in the back,” he apologises, starting the car up and pulling away towards the exits.
“You don’t need to apologise, I’m very thankful you drive me from airport to school.” The matter is forgotten completely as the car breaches the exit and your eyes are filled with light. Several skyscrapers dot the horizon line in the near distance, and everything looks so advanced and modern. There’s a large amount of people milling around outside, and the traffic just around the airport is rather congested, but the man navigates it with ease. You sit in a comfortable silence for a good half an hour before directing your gaze back inside the car with a sudden thought. “Sorry, I don’t know your name now.”
“Oh, you forgot?”
“Ah, yes, I forgot.”
He glances over at you intermittingly, hands relaxed on the wheel as he winds through the streets of Seoul. “My name’s Hoseok. Well, Teacher Jung.”
“Nice to meet you. I’m Y/n.” You purse your lips in the awkward silence that falls, trying to work out something grammatically correct to say. “Uh, the school is good? You like it?”
He hums his affirmation, and with a surprised blink you realize the car is already pulling up to a relatively small primary school, heading towards the staff parking. “You’ll love it here. The kids are great, and the staff are more like family.” He slides into a park in one clean swoop and stops the car. “Alright, out we go.”
You can’t see much of the school before you’re taken straight to the reception building, but it looks like there are only five or six classroom blocks out back, all lined up around a slightly bumpy and overgrown sports field. When you had applied to three different schools in South Korean, they were all smaller schools. You had decided you’d feel more comfortable with a rural primary school rather than a large one in the city. But you hadn’t connected the dots that a school away from the hustle and bustle of the city meant that funding wasn’t so high.
It probably worked out quite well for a school like this to get a teacher’s assistant. You had paid for your own flights, and they basically just provided you with a homestay for accommodation and a small weekly allowance for your work. Coming fresh out of a half-completed university degree, it was a nice break from student life for you, and a good opportunity for them to save a little money on staff.
One thing that immediately stuck out to you was the lack of receptionist in the reception office. Technically, it looked more like a waiting room with a few offices branching off. Hoseok bounced up to the door right across from the main entrance and rapped three times.
Principal Kim Seokjin, the plaque read, and the amount of time it took you to work that out by reading the characters, the door was falling inwards, and a warm voice called out, “Ah, Y/n, come in!”
You look up from the silver engraving and your mouth falls open. In the correspondence that had occurred between you and the principal, you had always imagined a grouchy but softhearted, slightly older gentleman. Okay, if you were honest with yourself, you just imagined Ji Seokjin from Running Man. If the shoe fits; but in this case it most certainly didn’t.
It felt like you had stumbled straight onto a cheesy k-drama set. He had honey blonde hair that swept over his much darker eyebrows, perfect bone structure and full, pouty lips that made you want to pass out just so he could perform mouth-to-mouth. “Uh…Yes, I’m Y/n. Nicetomeetyousir.”
He grins at your rushed introduction and invites you in to sit. His office is warmer than outside, and you automatically tune in to the principal’s brief conversation with Hoseok as you take off your coat and scarf.
“…those clothes. Didn’t you have time for a shower?”
“Why am I not hearing ‘Thank you, Hoseok, I’m so grateful, Hoseok’? I could’ve easily gotten Yoongi to go. She would’ve turned right back around and hopped on the next plane out of here.”
“Go back to class, Jung. Year 3 PE starts in eight minutes.”
“You’re most welcome for picking her up, sir. I appreciate the thanks.”
Principal Kim huffs and shuts the door gently behind him, making his way back to sit behind the large desk you were sitting across from. As your gaze follows him around the room, you notice a few frames nailed to the wall; a teaching certificate, a local management award, a photo of the school itself, and, larger than the rest, a professionally-shot picture of himself, with a white blouse and some round-framed glasses, lips slightly parted and staring dead-on into the camera.
You cough lightly as he turns to you with the exact same posture and expression. “How was your flight?”
“Good. I slept the flight.” Every time you say a sentence, you cringe internally when you know you’ve messed up, but he doesn’t really seem to react.
He breaks the gaze, reaches into a drawer and pulls out a stapled pile of pages, tossing it over to you to flick through. “There’s a map of the premises, though I imagine you’ll be able to find your way around soon enough, a copy of the official contract, and some general advice for living in Korea. Don’t worry too much about all that, since you’ll be living with a member of staff. He’ll take you to and from work each day and we’ve given him some extra funding for meals for you.”
You nod gratefully. “Thank you, sir. It is very helpful.”
A grin lights up his face as he leans back in his chair. “Now, that’s the boring stuff out of the way, are you ready for a tour?”
You blink, not understanding one of the words he used. “Tour?”
He gestures vaguely around himself. “I’ll show you the school, introduce you to our other teachers, that’s what tour means.”
“Oh, I see. Yes, let’s do it!”
One of the first things you learn about Kim Seokjin is that he walks pretty fast with those long legs of his, and you spent so much energy on half-jogging to keep up with him, that as he explained the history of the school, you couldn’t really focus on that too. You tried your best to make general sounds of surprise or agreement so that he thought you were listening, and hoped you weren’t missing anything too important.
It wasn’t until you finished following him around the school field that he comes to a halt outside the first classroom and you can finally zone in on what he’s saying. “…is the physical education classroom since it’s the closest to our equipment shed. Jung is teaching in there now, but you’ve already met him, so we won’t go in. You won’t really have to go over here much, but I thought I should mention that if you ever get here early, this is the only classroom that’s unlocked since it’s where the kids meet for early morning sport. There’s a bathroom in there too, so it’s a good place to stay warm until we officially open at 8am.”
You barely have to walk fifteen meters to be standing in front of the second building. Instead of staying outside on the concrete quad, he leads you up a short wooden ramp and into a small locker room. When he continues speaking, he’s dropped his voice to a stage whisper. “To the left, Class 2, that’s a basic room, we have most classes like Korean, English and Math in there.” He pops up to the small window on the door. “Ah, Min’s doing Year 5 math. Let’s go in.”
“Oh, we don’t have to…”
Your protests go unheard as he barges right in without knocking. “Can they do Pythagoras yet, Teacher Min?”
A low voice from inside the classroom calmly replies, “You can’t do Pythagoras yet, Seokjin.”
Principal Kim turns to you from half-in, half-out of the doorway, and tips his head over to get you to follow him inside.
The voice belongs to a man with dark hair and perfect skin. Like Principal Kim, he’s pretty young, and you’re beginning to regret not listening better to Kim’s speech, wondering if he had explained why all the teachers looked well under thirty so far. He’s lounging at the desk, one leg crossed leisurely over the other, eyebrows raised from behind his glossy bangs. His students, kids around 9 years old staring blankly at the three division questions written on the blackboard.
“You haven’t placed first in a regional beauty pageant, but you don’t see me complaining,” Kim bites back.
The teacher quirks his lips up a little in bemusement. “I wonder how long it’ll take you to realize that’s not a relevant achievement in the line of education.” His dark eyes flick over to you, and he raises his eyebrows further. “The new kid arrived?”
You bow to him. “Hello, my name is Y/n, nice to meet you.”
Principal Kim smiles benevolently and turns to the kids, who have long since given up on the math questions and are watching the interaction with wide eyes. “Children, Y/n will be helping you with your English. Take good care of her.” He leans over to you. “Say a little something about yourself.”
If there’s one thing worse than being put on the spot for an icebreaker, it’s being put on the spot for an icebreaker in a foreign language. Your mind whirs on double-time as you desperately try to find something interesting to say. “I have not been to Korea before, it is very kind here but more winter than my home country.”
An unreadable smile plays on Teacher Min’s lips. “What a relief that it’s English you’ll be teaching.”
You blush violently as Kim scolds the Teacher and quickly hustles you out of the classroom, shutting the door behind him with a little more vigor than usual. “Sorry about Min. He’s the only math teacher we could find. You’ll get used to him.”
“It’s fine,” you breath out with an awkward laugh, “I know my Korean is not good. I want to learn better here.”
He pats you on the shoulder, then points behind you. “That there is our art classroom, I’ll introduce you to Teacher Kim.” You frown. “Different Kim. Actually, there are three Kims at the school including me, so we call the other two Art Kim and English Kim. Anyway, let’s go in.”
You’ve always been a little biased towards the arts; you would’ve gone to university to study art history and painting were it not for your parents insistence that education was a much better field, and so it gave you a certain kind of wonder to see the people that had pursued their dreams in the field, and the kind of life they led where their job was their passion.
Your first impression of the classroom was how chaotic it was compared to the one across the hall. Instead of four lines of chairs and tables, students were bunched into small groups dotted around the room. The room itself was lined with benches; some had sinks where old streaks of paint led down the drain, some had boxes of charcoal sticks and pastels, others held cardboard sculptures and mock-ups. A fond smile played on your face at the scene you were met with. Principal Kim had chosen not to noisily announce his presence, and you could see the teacher looking like a giant on the extra small and short children’s chairs, talking quietly but passionately to a student attempting to draw an old green bottle that sat in the middle of the table.
His voice was surprisingly deep, and his hair was much longer than most men you had seen, flopping over in the front and reaching near his shirt collar in the back. Like every art teacher you had ever met, he had an endearingly quirky fashion sense, wearing a patchy pink woolen robe over a dress shirt and pants. The other students at the table bunched up as best they could, listening intensely and looking at him like he was explaining all the secrets of the universe. You remembered that feeling of awe well.
He glanced up when the principal called out his name, and let a boxy smile overtake his face. He quickly excused himself from the table and stood up to his full height, approaching you two as the kids called out in disappointment behind him.
You notice that when Principal Kim introduces the two of you, Art Kim never once takes his eyes off of you, staring at your face with some intent curiosity. You smile at him awkwardly and give a short bow. “Nice to meet you, Teacher Kim. Art is my favorite school subject.”
His lips drop open slightly. “Oh, really? Why do you like art?”
You weren’t prepared for the extremely open-ended and opinionated question, and it takes you a moment of stumbling over your words to get any coherent thought out. “Well, I see…no, I think art is, uh, beautiful, because it is…um, it is like a conversation from artist to person looking. I’m sorry, that doesn’t make sen-”
“It makes perfect sense,” he cuts you off quickly. His chestnut hair glows under the harsh lights in the room and his eyes stare deeply into yours. “You’re completely right. Art isn’t just a picture, it’s meant to be given and experienced. The artist is sending a message to the viewer, of course, but art is nothing if the viewer doesn’t see it and give something back, even if it’s just an emotion or an analysis.”
You don’t understand most of the words he just said. “Yes, exactly.”
He smiles at you again, shyly this time. “It is very nice to meet you, Y/n. I look forward to seeing you around.”
Principal Kim looks back and forth between the two of you, blinking like he’s just as lost in the conversation as you are. “Thank you for your time, Teacher Kim, we will be moving on with the tour now.”
Art Kim bows quickly and gives you a cute little wave, then goes back to his students, pulling up a chair at a different table and immediately entering into a conversation about whether the young boy should make the sky orange and the sun blue instead of doing it the normal way.
Once you’ve left the building and stand outside in front of classroom 4, Principal Kim turns to you and tuts. “Ah, this tour is so boring! Math and drawing pictures. But don’t worry, next is the science blo-”
He’s cut off by a loud bang coming from inside, which is paired with a flash of white and kids squealing in excitement and delight. A thin wisp of smoke trails out of one of the half-open windows.
Principal Kim lets out an exhausted sigh. “Dammit, Jeon Jungkook.”

September 18- Pepper in the middle of the fight in Civil War, for lillypotterml

Pepper sighed, eyes unfocused as she looked out the window. A fine misty rain was falling, the sort that seeped into everything leaving the world damp and chilled. She almost missed that feeling, the elevated temperature that the Extremis gave her meant she never felt the cold anymore, her body automatically adjusted for it. But without that same chill, she could have been anywhere in the world, instead of feeling it and knowing to her bones that she was in London. She had been in the city for almost six months.
Staying in New York, watching as Tony’s heart broke, because of her, hadn’t been an option. And going back to California without him had also been unappealing. She still loved him, she just couldn’t stay with him and living somewhere she associated with him so strongly was just salt in everybody’s wounds.
Therefore, Europe.
Specifically the London branch of Stark Industries. The city didn’t hold any great sentimental value to her or Tony. It was neutral ground.
Only in the last few weeks had they been able to talk, before that all communication had been by email or messages left with Friday. The loss of Jarvis was still a hole in her heart that she wasn’t sure she would ever get over. The AI had been more than a sophisticated computer program, he had been a friend. Each week the emails or messages got longer. Filled with the everyday trivia and science rambling that she expected from the genius superhero.
He wasn’t the only Avenger to keep in contact. Natasha stopped by when she was in the area, which could mean anything from down the street to the Eastern Hemisphere, Thor and Jane had dinner with her every month or so, and Captain Rogers had appeared in her office three months ago asking for her help.
She had given it gladly. The favour had been attached to an interesting International Legal question that filled her nights when she had missed the chaos of New York, or Malibu.
“Ms Potts, we have been given permission for take-off. Please secure your seatbelt.” Mr Allenson, SI’s pilot, informed her over the small plane’s intercom.

The hop from London to Berlin was short. They circled in the sky above the city waiting for landing permission for longer than it took to get there. It was wearing at her patience, but she understood the increased security that required it. It hadn’t been a good couple of days for the European Mainland.
On the ground, a bodyguard and driver were waiting for her next to a dark blue town car. The car crept across the city, the usual traffic of a large metropolis almost unnoticed to the occupied businesswoman. She used the drive to review the documents that PROToN, the not quite AI that Tony had made for her when Jarvis had been corporealised, had collected.
They pulled to a stop in front of a metal and glass construction that wouldn’t have been out of place in SI’s real estate portfolio. A besuited man was waiting for her. An agent to escort her, the usual twinge of grief for a different D & G wearing g-man was quickly squashed. The man stepped forward to open the door and hand her out of the car. Pepper Potts didn’t need the help but knew the value of accepting it.
He hustled her through the building, her heels clicking a staccato beat on the marble floor. She heard them before she saw them. Hurt and anger that she hadn’t heard in Tony’s voice in a long time.
“GIVE ME A BREAK! I’m doing what has to be done.” He was yelling as she walking in.
From his place sitting at the conference table, he couldn’t see her enter. Steve could. It was his attention on her instead of him that caught Tony’s. He turned to face her, expression shuttering.
“Pepper?”
“Tony.” It was the first time they had seen each other in person since the disaster of a dinner that she had walked out on.
“What? Why are you here?” Confusion quickly took over from the anger, the hurt was still there lurking in his eyes.
“I was helping Steve with something and found this.” She held out the tablet for him to take, video already queued.
A man neither of them recognised strode across the grainy CCTV footage of an almost empty carpark. He paused just before leaving frame, his face rippling, morphing until he looked like Sergeant James Barnes.
“That was in Vienna an hour before the bombing.” She told them. The video had a timestamp but she wanted to drive the point home.
“Wait, I’ve seen him.” Steve stopped. Stopped moving, stopped blinking, stopped breathing. Mind going over every face he had seen recently.
“The Psychologist!” He was running from the room before either of them could ask who he meant. They followed him. Catching up when he was stopped by a security door. The man from the video on the other side with Sergeant Barnes. Steve was pounding on the door, demanding to be let in.
“Steve?” A woman Pepper didn’t know came up behind them, Natasha and Falcon, Sam Wilson, behind her.
“We have to get him out of there.” Steve continued to try and punch his way into the room.
Around them, the power flickered and died. Red-emergency lights flooded everything in blood red. Something the man inside the room said pulled the Sergeant’s attention from watching Steve attempt property damage. The bound man twitched, saying something they couldn’t hear. No, maybe. Turning his head away and closing his eyes, trying to block out the world. He couldn’t hide from whatever was haunting him so he had to fight. His metal arm wrenched from the thick clamps that had been putting on a show of the holding him. Slamming himself into the reinforced glass, over and over again.
The man from the video was walking around the cage, still talking.
James finally broke through the cage. Too late.
Between one breath and the next, the restrained Sergeant’s body language transformed, from a man trying to fight his own mind, to someone dead inside. Eyes staring straight ahead, worse than a thousand yard stare, there wasn’t anything playing in his mind. He was waiting for orders. Unquestioning. The change sent a shiver down Pepper’s spine.
They were talking too quietly for them to hear.
James was moving again. Mechanical, but danger written in every line of his body. He was through the door that Steve had weakened in seconds. Swinging at the man standing in his way.
Steve refused to fight back, dodging blows that would incapacitate a lesser man if they landed.
A hand wrapped around her elbow, trying to draw her away from the fight. “Pepper, get out of here.” It was Tony. Tony without his suit. Breakable and soft without his armour.
“No.” She wrenched her arm away. Eyes and nail beds began to glow. She would protect the man who had protected her so many times.
Unwilling to hit his best friend, Steve could only dodge for so long. The heavy metal fist cracked into the Captain’s jaw. One hit KO. Then Pepper was the only one standing between one of the best killers in history, and a vulnerable Tony.
Time slowed down as her chemically enhanced adrenalin spiked. The mechanical arm was swung at her head, just as hard as it had been swung at Steve, no allowance for gender or apparent strength. She was an obstacle for the Soldat and nothing else but his best would do. She ducked even as one hand darted up, long elegant fingers wrapping around the cool metal. Without the weight behind her, she would never be able to stop the movement, but the heat flowing from her hands quickly slagged the mechanisms and plating of the wrist and hand.
The Soldat stumbled back, the first hint of emotion flickering to life in his eyes. Fear. It was a start. He came back again and again. Each time the metal arm came within reach she melted it a little more. Not wanting to hurt the man locked inside. She held him off long enough for Steve to come to.
Down one arm, the other super soldier was able to subdue his friend, wrestling him to the ground.
The Soldat struggled, grunting and groaning but not speaking.
“Bucky. Bucky, stop. Please.” Steve begged even as he dodged a kick, not releasing his hold.
Pepper’s adrenalin was burnt up by the Extremis raging through her system. Knees going weak, Tony’s arm around her waist was the only thing that kept her on her feet.
“Come on.” His voice was soft, loving. She had been the one to leave after all, his feelings had never wavered.
Leaning into him, she allowed herself to be led away. Natasha sweeping past her, a syringe of something in her hand.

Hey Pia, recently I started therapy but my therapist brushed aside me being emotionally abused & gaslit by my sibling by saying sibling fights are normal & we should focus on how I continue 'letting' it happen. I left the session rlly upset & it sent me into a spiral of self-loathing & doubt all over again/had I made everything up after all? I'm in a better place now but it would be lovely if you could tell me how to deal with such situations better, but no pressure!
Oh boy, bad therapists. Have I had some experience with them.
tl;dr: bad therapists suck, don’t give up, etc. etc.
THIS POST IS SO LONG I AM SO SORRY
Firstly, it is awesome you made the effort to go see a therapist. And please please don’t think all therapists (or even most therapists) will be like the one you saw.
Therapists are regular people, and unfortunately, sometimes regular people suck and a degree doesn’t change that.
Caveat: Not a therapist. Just a person who has seen a lot of therapists. YMMV.
I have seen a lot of therapists in my lifetime. And a lot of bad therapists. I won’t give you the exact number, but it’s well over 10. It’s actually pretty normal to sometimes meet therapists that are just a poor match. Even if the therapist had good reasons to think you were participating in a difficult situation, there’s a lot of ways to bring that up that aren’t straight up invalidating, and they should have tried to hear you, rather than put their opinions forward over yours.
Therapy should be a collaboration. Not just you listening to them. Not just them listening to you. They might disagree with you, they have to be able to do so tactfully and respectfully, and role model to you how to do this in a way that is respectful. And you have the right to disagree with them.
And I’m gonna be honest with you. Sometimes therapists will say things you’re not ready to hear, that hurt and make you doubt yourself. When I first heard: ‘Pia, do you think maybe you want to be sick?’ I about lost my shit internally, and went home and felt suicidal for two weeks. I didn’t think they were right, but I was terrified they were right, and I didn’t think I could tell them about it because how dare they ask me that question in the first place! What the hell?
But I went back and was like: okay, so after this session, and what you said, this is what happened. And I felt totally unsupported and certainly didn’t feel like I could tell you about this, because what, are you gonna tell me I want to be suicidal too? Here are all the ways I think I don’t want to be sick. I’m still deeply scared that deep down I might want to be, but I think you have to realise that what you’ve said is really hurtful to all the parts of me that fight every day - through lifestyle, coming here, eating well, reading self help books etc. - to not be sick. And I need you to acknowledge that.
And they did. And they apologised. Do I think maybe they wanted me to have a reaction? Yes. Do I think maybe they had no idea it would make me suicidal? I think also yes. They never would’ve done it otherwise. The aim isn’t to make your clients want to kill themselves. At all. Ever.
But anyway, the point is (...ignore how long I took to get here), part of therapy is actually telling the therapist when they’ve fucked up and seeing how receptive they are to that. That’s your responsibility as the client, and that’s something you take on when you hire them. Whether or not you feel you can do that is another thing. It’s totally okay to write down how you feel in a letter, and hand it to them, or email it to them. You can say ‘read this and I’m going to go wait in the waiting room and you can come get me after.’ I have written down a ton of things I wasn’t ready to say.
But it’s an important step in actually - weirdly - learning how to stand up for yourself in a working relationship that goes both ways.
Now, about therapy in general. They work for you. You hire them for your health. So if it’s really not working out, then you also have the right to fire them and find someone else.
Sometimes it can be worth explaining why you’re considering firing them in an email, so they know where they went wrong, but to also give them a chance to reconsider how they’re approaching you, i.e.: ‘I feel like you invalidated my experiences and my feelings, and therefore reduced all of my difficulties and issues around this to something you could sweep aside before telling me things about my own experiences, without ever really hearing me. That’s not fair, it’s inaccurate and it’s not helpful to me. I accept that I might have things to learn about my own behaviour here, but not through you invalidating my upset and hurt, and not through you minimising my real feelings. Because of what you did, these were the consequences (and tell them that you became more self-loathing and so on, that’s not how they’re supposed to leave you feeling after a session!) As a result, I’m not sure / don’t think this is a good fit / will look for another therapist / would be open to suggestions from you as to how to proceed.’ Etc.
That’s a mature way of handling it. (And honestly, even if the therapist doesn’t like getting the email, it is good for them to know why people are leaving early. So they know you’re not just a ‘non-compliant patient’ or whatever the fuck (which you’re not), but someone who has been genuinely distressed by a session that they directly contributed to - like you paid money for that shit! That’s crappy.)
But another mature way, if they really just seem gross, is to fire them and find someone else. You can take a break first, for sure. I always have taken a short break and sort of thought about what I really want too. Like, what do I want? These days it’s ‘to be more functional and to enjoy life more.’
It’s worth calling around and actually screening therapists if you can (depending on how the system works where you are). Screening therapists can be asking things like: what therapy modalities do you prefer? How do you deal with situations where someone is being verbally abused by their sibling? Do you take this seriously? etc. You can definitely pre-screen. I’ve always done this in emails which look like this:
“Dear (whoever they are)
I’m (such and such) from (place) and have been diagnosed with (disorders) due to (one sentence history). I am seeking therapy to help me with (specific things like - learning how to be less anxious, or learning how to be more functional in my life).
Are you taking new clients?
If you are, could you please let me know the following to see if we might be a good fit?
(Here I ask about modality - CBT is contraindicated in my case so it rules out a lot of therapists automatically, and then I ask about their experience in extensive child abuse trauma and history, as well as medical and chronic illness, and pain and fatigue issues. Here is also where I ask if they offer a sliding scale to people with a low income and no insurance.)

If they can’t take the time to answer a simple email, either with a call or by replying, then I don’t want to see them anyway, imho. I’m looking to hire them, not the other way around, they can at least communicate some actual credentials to me that mean more than a damn BA degree. But in Australia, therapists will often reply to emails like this. I’m not sure how that is in other places in the world.
Now as to the actual meaty part of like, you going home and feeling fucking awful afterwards. Here’s some stuff you may want to keep in mind in the future:
1. They work for you. And their job is not to make you feel like you are the worst ever. That is no therapist’s job on the planet. Challenging you is not making you decompensate and become non-functional. They fucked up. Sometimes therapy will be challenging and sometimes it will hurt and if you are prone to feeling self-doubt it is going to make you self-doubt. But there is a line between ‘this is stuff that would come up anyway’ and ‘this is something you directly made happen by invalidating my feelings.’ When that happens, it is not a sign that you are the worst ever (you are not even the worst), it is a sign that they made a mistake in their job, like any person who has a job can do.
Unfortunately when therapists make mistakes, they’re making mistakes with people’s psyches, instead of fucking up the icing on a cake, or the level on a brick wall.
But yeah, they are not some authority on high to tell you What is What about Your Life.
The only expert on your life is you. And you invite them into that space to treat you with respect in the process. Invalidating your feelings is not respect. (And I say that even as someone who has disproportionate reactions to things.)
2. Idk what your support situation is like, but it may be worth reaching out to people (or animals) who can make you smile or feel a bit better or get you outside of your head for a bit.
3. Sensory stimulation to also get you outside of your head for a bit. A warm/hot shower or bath. Running your hand over interesting textures like velvet or a nubby couch. Sipping a hot drink that you took the time to make for yourself.
4. Reflecting on what’s actually happening internally like. ‘I feel like they think i’m X and X’ or ‘they must think that I’m just X’ or whatever it is. And then write that down somewhere - both for yourself, and if you decide to share it with them later, so you have clarity on what’s occurring. Sometimes just naming what you’re going through can give you enough knowledge to be like ‘right, I’m afraid that a relative stranger thinks I’m terrible because they know almost nothing about my history and they made an assumption about me.’ - If you take a step back from that, it can help to remember they are a relative stranger who knows almost nothing about you.

It’s hard here because I’m not in that session and I don’t know why the therapist said what they said (though trust me, I do believe you that they fucked up - some of them suuuuck), and I know that you go to therapy to be challenged, because if your therapist is just ‘hey fam everything you’re doing and thinking is fine go home you’re just great’ - you’re gonna go home and nothing is going to change. But I think you and I both know that there’s ways of challenging people which don’t suuuuuuck, and that if you have a good trusting bond with your therapist, you can also tell them when they fuck up, and they will actually make steps to repair that with you, so you can be stronger going into the future.
That’s actually one of the best parts of a therapeutic bond, imho, especially as someone coming from an emotionally abusive background - learning how to repair mistakes and realising that you can both do that collaboratively together, and see things get stronger. (Since, in situations of abuse, ruptures can mean no opportunities for genuine forgiveness or growth ever).
But you can’t do it with all therapists. Because some therapists are just shitty at their jobs. Like a bad baker. Or like the dude that makes pizzas but you know he just doesn’t care about pizzas really. Or the doctor who fat-shames instead of doing their fucking job.
I don’t know if I said anything that helped. All I have is some sense of solidarity because I have done the whole bad therapists thing too. My life was helped a lot by realising I was hiring them, and that they work for me. Before that, I always felt like they were some kind of godly authority figure that could see into my inner mind in a way I couldn’t and blah blah blah could Judge Me Like A God (thanks childhood, for featuring an abusive figure who was a cop that fucked up my relationship with authority figures forever). It was really hard for me to understand that no, they’re just like every other damn person you’re gonna hire to work for you: they can be fired if they’re not good at their job or if their vision is totally different to yours.
You’d fire an interior decorator who wanted to fit out your house in something you hated. You definitely have to fire a therapist who wants to fit out your brain in something that makes you hate yourself.

We made it halfway
Context: What is written here happened in the beginning of July 2020. Yes we are halfway through 2020. Guess what else happened in 2020? COVID-19 and Trump... What a time to be alive! 🙃 A week ago Trump signed an order to suspend all H1B (working) visa processing until at least the end of the year. I have two friends from high school (let’s give them fake names, April and Ann, because Parks and Rec) who are working in Pittsburgh and Boston and applying for their H1B (working) visa this year. We went to high school in Vietnam together, and all went to the US at different schools for college. I was wondering if the order was going to affect them, so I sent them a few messages on Facebook to check how they were handling this. The previous time I sent them a message to them were probably at least 1-2 years ago. They both replied and said the visa suspension did not really affect them. We all caught up with one another through messaging and decided to set up a video call on the night of July 4th (because what else was there to do this year 😅).

You know how sometimes it takes a global pandemic to finally have time to catch up with your high school best friends who also live in the US but you never really had the chance to meet in person. 😅 The last time our group of friends did a video call was in 2013 or 2014. There we were again 6 years later, and we just hit if off instantly and talked non-stop for 4 hours. It was like those 6 years never existed and we were just together the day before. We talked so much our throats hurt haha.
We talked about everything. Of course we talked about people we went to school with and how/where they are now. Most of the friends went study abroad like us. Some of them came back to Vietnam. Some of them already got married. Then we talked about how rare it was that all of us were single at the same time and looked into planning a girls’ trip haha. We talked about relationship stuff, like what we want in a partner or a relationship or whether we want to get married or have kids. We talked about the people we dated and what we have learned from our previous relationships. We talked about how our American dreams as well as our perceptions about life in the US had shifted and changed and what we wanted as the purpose of our life. Like real serious adults talk haha.
Ann then brought up about someone from our school who went to Georgia Tech for college and committed suicide last year and how that how we all had some periods of time when we felt so lost and depressed. At that point Ann was very depressed and felt like her life was so meaningless. She said that suicide news was the wake-up call for her. So she asked her boss to give her a month off, and headed back to Vietnam and saw her family earlier this year in February (when COVID-19 was mustering and looming). When she came back to the US, she felt better and started looking for a new job. She landed one with Microsoft. (Yes girl!!) She told us the same stories of a few of our friends from middle school and high school who also had some periods where they felt so lost and depressed during their time living far away from family and friends in a new country and culture. April told us about her “sad period” and how becoming religious helped her find a way out. I talked about the time I lost my Grandma and how I sought out to therapy. (I promise to myself that I’ll normalize talking about mental health issues and therapy from now on, because not talking about them inevitably keeps them a taboo, when they are not.) We all coped differently. Luckily, we all actively found our ways to recover and felt better and was living our lives in the US when we had this conversation. But this path of being an international student that we chose is not always easy and not for everyone. Perhaps it could have helped if we’d known about each other’s difficult experience and shared with our friends who were also going through similar hardship. If there are any people that can understand, it’s them. So my friends and I, we made a pact that whenever one of us feels down and goes through any emotional or mental challenges ever again, we will let the others know.
The clock hit 1:45 am, and I suggested we call if a day. Ann, being Ann, asked if we could take a photo together and posted on Facebook, so we would be reminded years from now about this reunion. So I offered to take the photo, took it, sent it to them right away, and asked if the picture was okay. Ann said it looked good. She made a silly, cute pose with both her hands in a peace sign held high next to her face. April was like, “Yeah, it’s okay! Actually, hehe, can we take it again? I don’t look so good.” And I said, “Of course!”. April replied, “Yayyy hihi, thanks!” or something like that. I took it again, and this time everyone was happy. Then Ann made a comment, “Wow this is just like high school. April is still the awkward, shy baby, and [Me] is still the caring mom of the group.” And Ann is still the silly, hilarious one (you can tell based on her pose). It was just funny and interesting to see how we had changed and matured so much in the past years, and yet we were still the same people in high school.
Plot twist - Monday, July 7th, 2020
Like any day this year now, something shocking just happened today. While I can imagine Ann and April got quite some messages asking if the new order affected their working visa, 3 days later, it was my turn. This evening, a federal order was issued, saying that all students who attend schools decide to conduct 100% online classes in the Fall due to COVID-19 are mandated to leave the US or risk getting deported. I am currently on a student visa, which is affected by this order. My phone was flooded with messages from friends checking on me. Oh how the table has turned LOL.
This order came out right after Harvard announced they were doing entirely virtual classes for the Fall. The government wanted schools to stay open despite the pandemic ravaging the whole country and was afraid schools would follow Harvard’s move. Harvard, you freaked out the government, and played us all. But you sued the gov for this order, so we forgive you. 😂 When this order was released tonight, all hell broke loose for the international student community on social media. I can imagine the administration of all universities in the country are feeling the same shock, confusion, and dread.
My first reaction when I saw this was ironically to laugh. I just laughed. I have been laughing a lot lately at some of all the ridiculous things the President said or some of the bad news coming my way. Remember that time when he said he had been taking hydroxycloroquine for preventing COVID-19. Or when he suggested injecting disinfectants to kill the virus. And we also saw how that statement turned the whole country upside down. The White House, CDC, and all disinfectant companies was racing to issue statement against his advice and deal with the consequences that night and the next morning. I mean I must admit there was a little part of that that was funny, right? All of that can be great materials for a new episode on VEEP lol. So yeah, I laughed. Ironic laughs, but laughs nonetheless. I don’t know why I laughed. Maybe those things I heard were to absurd and ridiculous. Maybe I’ve gone crazy during this strange time. Maybe this is the new resort that my newly updated brain automatically seeks out to when I hear news like this. Aaah what a time to be alive! 😂 (If my life has an emoji, it is definitely this laugh cry emoji. 😂)
I told my friends I don’t know how this was going to play out for my case, but at this point, I honestly just feel fine. It’s not that I don’t care. I just feel fine. I’ve worked hard and tried my best to do all that I can to maximize my chance of getting a job here in the US and fulfill my goals and dreams. Anything else is out of my control. So whatever comes my way, I will cope with it and figure it up. I feel like at this point I have been through enough to know I can deal with anything and everything will be alright. Knowing who and how I am as a person now, I just know I will survive and thrive anywhere life takes me. 😁 So yeah, I laughed and I feel fine. I’d not be surprised if tomorrow I wake up to another one like this. I mean it’s 2020. Why not? 😂
And it truly feels fine. Probably because I know no matter what happens there is always hope and wonderful people in my life and in this world standing with me on my side. 😊
Update on Thursday, July 9th, 2020, 3 days after the issuance of the above order.
My university has been sending out emails every day to assure us international students that the university disagrees with the order and is doing everything they can to protect its international students and create a safe and viable environment for us to continue pursuing our education here in the US. My friends from all over the country reached out and checked on me to see if I would be affected by this order. Many of my American friends and colleagues have been speaking out and taking actions against this order. It’s not their fight, yet they chose to participate anyway and stand by the side of us international students. The amount of support that I have seen and received has been tremendous, and I am beyond grateful. My heart is so full.
All of this is truly a reminder for me to just care about others and choose to fight those battles not for me but for others. This is a fight against us international students, yet we are joined by people who are not affected by this incident at all. I want to remember how empowered and supported this has made me feel during the past few days by recording it here. There are a lot going on right now in the world and this country. A lot of different people are under attack, like Black people and the LGBTQ+ community. I am not one of them. I am not under those attacks. But when I am under one, people who are not affected choose to fight for and with me, because it is the right thing to do. And so I want to choose to fight those battles that are not mine and stand with others when it is the right thing to do.

My 6-Step Content Marketing Formula That Drives 3,549 Visitors
Writing a blog post is easy.
If you don’t write often, you may feel otherwise, but just follow this and you’ll be good to go when it comes to writing. Or, you can just watch the video below.

But still, you write a blog post and then what do you do?
Well, I’ll tell you this… most people forget the “marketing” in content marketing. Most people write content but don’t do a great job of promoting it.
Here’s the thing: I figured out the perfect formula to promoting content.
Best of all, it’s not complex. Heck, it doesn’t even take 30 minutes. It’s so easy that I broke it down into 6 steps.
And just to give you an idea before we dive into the formula, it’s so effective here is the traffic to my latest blog post.
35,492 visits in a week isn’t too shabby. The post didn’t do exceptionally well and it didn’t tank. It was just an average post.
Now you probably won’t see the same results as me as I’ve been doing this for a long time, but your results will be much better than what you are currently getting. Hence, I used the number of 3,549 in the title as you should be able to drive 1/10th of what I am generating.
So, let’s dive right into the formula.
Step #1: Optimize your headline
8 out of 10 people will read your headline, but only 2 out of 10 people will click through on your headline to read the rest of your article.
No matter how well written your content is, promoting it won’t be effective if no one likes your headline.
Now I know what you are thinking… I’ve already published my article, is it too late to change my headline?
Nope, you can always change your headline, just try not to change the URL of the article once it is already published. And if you decide to change the URL, use a 301 redirect.
There’s a really simple way to come up with headlines that work. Heck, it doesn’t even take more than a minute or two.
Just head over to Ubersuggest and type in the main keyword or phrase your article is about.
You’ll see a report that looks something like this:
Now I want you to click on “Content Ideas” in the left-hand navigation.
You should now see a report that looks like this:
This report shows you all of the blog posts around the web that contain your keyword or phrase within their title. And it breaks it down by social shares, backlinks, and search traffic.
You can use this to see what is working in your space.
Ideally, you want to look for headlines that have thousands of social shares (or hundreds if you aren’t in a popular industry), at least 10 backlinks, and more than 100 estimated visits. Just like the example below.
Making your headlines similar to ones that meet those 3 criteria will increase your odds of getting more traffic.
Step #2: Add 3 internal links
The easiest way to get your new content more love is to build links.
Yes, links are hard to build, but internal links are not… plus they are still effective.
I rank for competitive terms like “digital marketing”…
A lot of it has to do with internal links. I link to my main digital marketing page within my sidebar and within my content.
Every time you publish a new blog post, I want you to go into your older content that is relevant to your newly published blog post and add a link to it. Do this to 3 of your older blog posts.
This helps with indexing and it also helps your new content rank higher on Google.
Step 3: Share your content on the social web carefully
The problem with social media marketing is that people think they can just share their content on sites like Facebook or LinkedIn and it will automatically do well.
Sadly, it won’t because billions of URLs have been shared already.
In other words, we just tend to ignore most of the links people share.
But there is a simple way to stand out and get thousands of visitors from the social web, just like I get.
So, what’s my secret?
Well, I will give you a hint. Just look at one of my most recent posts on LinkedIn:

Do you notice a pattern?
I’m evoking curiosity. In other words, I am piquing your interest and if you want to know the “solution” you have to click through to my site.
With the LinkedIn post, I tell you that marketing is going to change next year. I also make a point to say how it is going to change in a way that nobody is talking about.
I do this because we all can assume marketing will change. But by saying it is in a way nobody is talking about, it evokes curiosity. And if you want to know how it will change you have no choice but to click through over to my site to read the rest.
With my Facebook post, I also evoke curiosity. I talk about a Google algorithm update, but I hint that I have an answer to leveraging Google’s latest algorithm update. And if you want to know what it is, you have to click through over to my site.
Whenever you post on the social web, evoke curiosity if you want people to head over to your site.
The easiest way to do this is that every time you share one of your articles on the social web, add a few sentences above the link that helps pique peoples’ interest.
Step #4: Message everyone you link out to
It’s common to link out to other sites within your blog posts.
Heck, sometimes I even link out to my competition.
If you don’t ever link out to other sites, you are making a big mistake. It helps with authority and trust.
If you are using stats and data within your article, you want to cite your sources. This brings credibility to you and it helps brand yourself as an expert which can help with Google’s medic update.
Now, when you link out to a site, go and search their email address. You can typically find their email address on their website.
Or if you can’t find their email address, look for a contact page on their site, you’ll typically see a form that you can fill out.
Whether you find an email address or contact form, I want you to message each and every single site you link out to with a message that goes like this:
Hi [insert their first name],
I just wanted to say, I love your content. Especially your article on [insert the name of the article you linked out to].
I linked to it from my latest blog post [insert URL of your blog post]. It would make my day if you checked it out and even shared it on your favorite social network if you enjoyed it.
Cheers,
[insert your name]
When I send out these emails, I am getting 50 to 60% of the people to respond and share my content. But of course, my blog is popular, so for me, it isn’t too hard. But it hasn’t always been that way, and I’ve been leveraging this tactic for ages.
On the flip side, I also use this tactic on a few of my blogs that are in other niches and don’t use my name (no one knows I own them) and I am seeing success rates around 20%.
Just make sure you don’t use this tactic to ask for a link back. Your success rate will be slim.
Step #5: Send an email blast
These last two tactics produce a large portion of my results, and you shouldn’t take them for granted, no matter how basic they may seem.
If you already haven’t, start collecting emails from your site. You can use free tools like Hello Bar to create popups or sliders.
Hello Bar will plug into whatever email provider you are currently using.
Once you are up and running, every time you release a new blog post, send out an email blast.
Here’s an example of one of my email blasts.
It’s so effective it generated 13,544 clicks.
I’ve found that you can drive good traffic from emails as long as you do the following:
Scrub your list – if someone doesn’t open your emails over the last 30 or 60 days, remove them from your list. It helps keep your emails in people’s inboxes.
Send text-based emails – if you look at the email I sent, I keep it simple. No images, nothing fancy, just text and a link back to my site. It’s that simple.
Evoke curiosity – just like how I explained with the social media posts, your emails won’t do well unless you evoke curiosity.
As you write more content you will get more traffic, which will cause your email list to grow. That will also cause you to get more traffic. 🙂
Step #6: Send a push notification
I don’t know why so few sites are leverage push notifications. It’s so effective I believe I will get more traffic from push notifications in 2020 than I will from email marketing.
To give you an idea, when I analyze my competitors in the marketing arena, only 3 out of 19 use push notifications.
In other industries, the percentage is far worse, which means there is more opportunity for you.
Here’s how push notifications work….
Someone comes to your site and through their browser, they get a message if they want to subscribe to your site.
A portion of your visitors will click “allow”. With NeilPatel.com, roughly 5.4% of visitors are currently clicking “allow”.
You can send push notifications and get subscribers using a free tool like Subscribers.com.
And then when you write a new blog post, you log into Subscribers.com and click on the “Create Notification” button. From there you will see a screen where you can enter the title and description of your latest post.
As you can see from the image above, you’ll notice that I use an “icon” image, a “large” image, and I show “custom buttons.”
Using those 3 elements is the key to getting the most traffic from push notifications. Here are some of my stats from using Subscribers.
I’m getting roughly 6,000 visits from every push notification I send. That’s not too bad.
And if you are curious about what a push notification looks like, here’s what people get when I send it out.
What’s cool about push notification is no matter what website someone is on, they will see a message similar to the one above, which will bring people back to your site.
No dealing with spam filters or messages not going through. Plus, if someone isn’t online when you send a push notification, the next time they use their web browser they will see your message.

You don’t need “advanced” tactics or anything that is out of the box. The basics work well, and I have been using the above formula for years… literally.

They Made Me Swear on their Lives
They made me swear by their lives. I have sworn never to tell - or else. Now it’s too late. It’s all too late. I was married. We were happy. We had two children. I think we still do, but I’m not so sure. The bank I worked at was just a small branch. An Italian name, if you must know. I worked first at the counter, then they promoted me. Back office. Deputy manager. Manager. All that within a year. And then the men came. There were four of them and they opened an account for a small company. I don’t know why i had the account number written on my notebook. I must have told it to them or maybe they asked me to write it down. I wish I’d remember. I checked just out of curiosity. It’s something I did - not often, but once or twice a day. When a customer looks interesting and you are curious who they are - nothing is more enlightening to check their account. The account was not even a day open. 700 million. Seven Zero Zero Million Dollar. The money came from different accounts, not just one or two - hundreds of them. I thought it was a money laundering scheme. I followed procedure - freeze the funds, send a message to the internal anti fraud team and another to the feds. I felt fidgety and nervous for the rest of the day. I thought any moment someone might enter the bank with a weapon or bomb. Nobody came, not even the police. I went home early, took the bus, carefully stayed in crowds. When I got home the front door was locked. The light inside was on. A radio was playing. I unlocked the door and stepped inside. It smelt like stale tobacco. “I’m home!” I felt my voice quivering in my throat. No response. I grabbed my umbrella like a weapon. “Hello?” I stepped through the corridor and into the living room. I didn’t take my shoes off. “Hello? I’m home! Anybody in.” I was certain that I had seen her car outside. And then I saw it. A white piece of paper with handwriting in blue pen. Three lines. We have them. We will keep them as long as we need you. Don’t make another mistake. I ran frantically through the house. Her mobile was on the kitchen counter, right next to a chopping board with three half-sliced carrots. No knife. I called her best friends and family. Nobody had any idea. For half an hour I sat on the kitchen floor, my back curled against the hard wood of the pot cupboard. Then, without thought, I grabbed my phone. My fingers were shaking when I typed the three numbers. There was a dial tone. “You’re not very smart, aren’t you?” The voice was deep and throaty. “Sorry,” I said. “I must have misdialed. I hung up and typed the emergency number again. “Welcome back,” said the voice. “And now you listen.” He told me I would have to obey. He promised that they wouldn’t hurt them. “Although,” he said. “Your wife is pretty attractive.” “Fuck you.” “Oh, no.” I heard the grin in his voice. “I will fuck you.” I don’t remember how I cursed him. “Open the door,” he said. “What?” “Open the door.” WIth the butcher knife in my hand I crawled towards the front door. He edged me on. He told me that they wouldn’t be there, that I would have been long dead if they wanted to. “Just open it. There is something that you want back.” I pulled the door slightly open. There were three stacks of clothes, clothes I knew. In the center was hers. Underwear sat on a white top sat on a pair of jeans. On top of the underwear was something small. Something pink. There was a red ring on the panty below it. The screams and gags blocked each other in my throat. I couldn’t breath. “Yes,” he said. “That’s your wife’s nipple. The right one, if you must know.” He laughed. “Will you listen now?” He made me swear by their lives. Swear never to tell. Lies in all directions, her and my parents screaming. Her parents got angry, said they would call the police. I told them not to. They too disappeared. Six years. A gray blur. If you wonder how I survived - I don’t know. I lost most of my weight, most of my hair, all of my friends. Sometimes they sent me a few pieces of hair. A few times they sent photos - always them, in a white room, sometimes with straps on their arms, sometimes free and with toys or books. They looked thin. Once they sent me a used pad. “Your daughter’s first,” said the handwritten note. “We thought you might want to see it.” Their demands were simple enough. They sent me names and addresses, I opened new accounts. Sometimes they made me close other accounts. I had to make sure none of the automatic safeguards went off. Sometimes I saw the accounts. Saw the transfers. Saw the names. You wouldn’t believe the names. The people you elected; the people you thought were governing for you. Some of them were paid - but most of them were the ones paying. I guess it makes sense. It all makes sense. Even the crisis makes sense. The system wouldn’t have failed. It was set up never to fail. There were hundreds of organizations just made to prevent the system failure. They manufactured the crisis. They made the system fail. The crisis. The bail outs. All of it was them. They don’t even care about the money. Money is not the tool to control the ones in power, money is the tool to get those in power that you control. I’m not the only one. There are hundreds like me, that can never speak about it. “We make the punishment match the crime,” that’s what the man said when he called me. “For every time we cut a slice off. It wasn’t me. I would have kept silent. It must have been the new guy. He saw one of the accounts. I guess he knew that it was dangerous. He must have used my name on the report form. I didn’t know until the parcel arrived. It was 6am. The doorbell rang loud and long. I made my way to the door. Nobody was there. Just the parcel. About the size of a guitar. It was heavy but soft. The contents seemed to roll from one side to the other. There was a dark plastic around it. A small white paper lying on top. Blue pen. Three lines. Ever wondered what an industrial meat slicer does to a body? Your son can scream pretty loud and long. You should really learn. I don’t know why I opened the plastic. I just needed to know. His whole legs. All of his legs. Thinly sliced, even the bone. All morning I threw up. My stomach clenched so hard it felt like cement. Around noon I grabbed the box and ran out of the house. I jumped in the car. That’s when the call came. “Not a good idea, is it?” I heard my wife’s voice in the background. After all those years, just hearing her muffled voice made me choke. “Look,” he said. “We have her here. I have a pair of scissors. Start the car and I’ll send you another piece of her.” I turned the key. The engine roared, then turned off again. “Oops,” he said. I will never forget those screams. “Now,” he said. “We will send it to you. Will you keep being stupid?” “I didn’t do a thing.” “Stop reporting us,” said the man. “We don’t like that kind of attention.” I cried and screamed. “I didn’t do anything!” “Sure you didn’t,” said the man “At least you won’t anymore.” I didn’t go to work that day. The box with my son’s legs sat on the living room floor when I drank myself to sleep. In the morning it was gone. There was a small box instead. I felt the vomit in my throat even before I opened it. A nipple. A photo of my daughter. Despite the messy hair and the blue bruises on her arms she looked so beautiful. Fourteen years old. She wore a yellow dress and sat on a bare metal chair. A note. Blue pen. Three lines. Doesn’t she look pretty? So unspoiled. Still pure. I hope you learn. Else she is next. I don’t remember leaving the house. I don’t remember the drive. I don’t remember entering the bank. I just remember the new guy, how he knocked on my office door. “I found something,” he said. “Go away.” “It’s really important.” “I don’t have time.” “You have to look at this!” He slammed two sheets of paper on the table. Lists of names. Lists of accounts. I knew all of them. “It’s a huge money laundering scheme. I noticed one of the accounts two days ago,” he said. “And reported it.” I straightened my back. “Thank you,” I said. “Well done. I’ll take over from here.” “But let me tell you…” “No. I’ll take over from here.” “Okay,” he said. “Thank you.” I pointed to the doorway. He turned around, then back to me. “Just so you know,” he said. “I reported them already. And I sent a letter to the FBI.” I whispered “Fuck” but he didn’t seem to hear. “But there was some problem with the system,” he said. “I think I’m not registered yet. And you told me to use your name if something doesn’t work with mine.” They heard my screams even in the front room. I closed the branch. I sent them all home and locked myself inside. No matter what number I dialed on my mobile, I only reached him. I reached just one police station before the landline was cut too. I sent hundreds of emails out, most of them bounced back. Every few minutes they throw a new letter through the mail slot. They are all soaked in red. They made me swear by their lives. They think I broke that oath. They left nearly a hundred voicemails. I listened to two of them. Each two minutes. First a man’s laugh. The rest my daughter’s screams.

These 9 Brands Take Personalized Marketing to a New Level
When I sit down to write an article, I have a pretty standard routine. I outline the story in our Content Optimization System (COS), copy and paste it into a Google doc, find a good photo to accompany it, do research, write, proofread, and carry it back over to our COS. It’s a weird series of steps that doesn’t necessarily work for everyone, but it does for me. They’re my very own personal blogging habits. Those habits aren’t just limited to my writing process. I have morning, evening, and weekend routines, as if my entire life has become a series of established patterns. Knowing what those habits are, I learned during step four of the above, is a veritable goldmine for marketers. I figured that out from a 2012 New York Times article called, “How Companies Learn Your Secrets.” Penned by Charles Duhigg, it was written largely as a follow-up to what became a public incident: An angry father marched into a Minnesota Target store, demanded to know why his teenage daughter received coupons for baby products, only to later find out that she was, in fact, pregnant. The retailer, it turned out, was able to predict her pregnancy and subsequently personalize the promotions she received, thanks in large part to a ton of (completely legal) data collection and analysis. Creepy — or great marketing?
Today, we’re still asking ourselves that question. But, ultimately, it seems that there can be a good balance between knowing your customer way too well and solid marketing. In fact, in 2018, Harvard Business Review revealed that although people want to keep their information secure online, they still value personalized and meaningful marketing experience. But how does personalized marketing work, and how have other brands put it into practice without coming off as creepy? Here are eight great examples of brands that nailed it in a way that came off as fun rather than intrustive. 9 Personalized Marketing Examples 1. Shutterfly Shutterfly is a website and app that allows you to create canvases, photobooks, calendars, and even items with your own photos laminated on to them. While Shutterfly has gotten creative with personalized emails and subject lines, one unique thing it did recently was personalize item offerings on its app. If you download the Shutterfly smartphone app, create an account, and give Shutterfly permission to access your photos, it will automatically identify photos with faces in them and place them on items that you can purchase from the app. My colleague, Pamela Bump, recently discovered this while she was creating photo-books as holiday gifts for her family. In the example below, she noticed that the app placed photos of herself and one specific friend in particular on to items including mugs, holiday cards, and calendars.
The Takeaway If you sell products that are personalized to begin with, it can be helpful to show your customer what they could look like before they buy them as well as photos or words related to their life that would look great on the product. However, when you do this, be very careful that you get explicit permission to go through someone’s information to pull this data. When it came to Shutterfly, Pamela had already given the app permission to access her photos and connected the account to her Facebook account where she approved a number of other related permissions. If you don’t get proper permissions and pull appropriate personalization data, you could come off as untrustworthy or downright creepy. 2. Snapchat’s Bitmoji In 2016. Snapchat launched an app called Bitmoji which allows users to design cartoonish avatars of themselves that can be featured as their Snapchat profile picture and or on the Snap Map, if permitted. Since then, Snapchat has also launched an autogenerated daily Story in its Discover feed, called “Bitmoji Stories.” When you click into a Bitmoji Story, you can see a series of comic-book-like images that tell a story about your own Bitmoji avatar. If you’ve recently spoken to a friend with a Bitmoji attached to the app, you can also see your friends pop up in your daily Story. The Takeaway Because Bitmoji Stories appear in Discover, with all the other branded content and advertisements on Snapchat, the app company has found a great way to bring people to this particular area of the app — even if they aren’t interested in seeing branded content. While audiences are on this Discover page, they might find a brand or content that catches their attention and further interact with feed. This is a great example of how an app creatively used personalization to bring traffic from one area of its app to another. 3. Target To continue the above tale, we thought it might be helpful to share more information on how, exactly, the retailer pulled off the aforementioned personal prediction. As Duhigg explains in his article — which goes into much greater detail than I will here — every Target customer is assigned a Guest ID number after the very first interaction with the brand. That ID is used to store the customer’s demographic information, ranging from ethnicity to job history, and to track buying behavior. And by doing the latter, specifically with those who had baby registries with the store, Target’s marketing analysts were able to form a “pregnancy prediction” score, which allowed them to determine which purchasing patterns indicated a customer was in the early expectant stages.
It was a game changer. “Once consumers’ shopping habits are ingrained,” Duhigg writes, “it’s incredibly difficult to change them.” That is, until, a major life event takes place, like finding out that a baby is one the way. That’s when routines are forced to change. Suddenly, there’s a deadline, and people start to buy products that they never previously considered, like “cocoa-butter lotion” and “a purse large enough to double as a diaper bag,” the article says. Those are the behaviors that trigger Target’s pregnancy prediction score, prompting the customer to receive special deals on baby-related items. The Takeaway While this level of personalized marketing is admittedly fascinating, it could backfire. Duhigg summarized it well in his article:
Using data to predict a woman’s pregnancy, Target realized … could be a public-relations disaster. So the question became: how could they get their advertisements into expectant mothers’ hands without making it appear they were spying on them? How do you take advantage of someone’s habits without letting them know you’re studying their lives?”
That’s not to say that marketers should completely do away with personalization, as it’s effective when done correctly — personalized emails, for example, have a 6.2% higher open rate than those that aren’t. But in an era with growing concern over privacy and security, tread lightly. Let your customers know that you understand them, without being intrusive. Vidyard Last week, my colleague, HubSpot Academy Sales Professor Kyle Jepsen, forwarded me an email with the comment, “Taking personalization to a whole new level.” The video below followed:
Source: Vidyard He wasn’t kidding. This particular brand could have just superimposed each recipient’s name onto the whiteboard in this video and kept the same script for each one. But it didn’t stop there — Cole, the gentleman speaking in the video, not only addressed Kyle by his first name, but also referred to his specific colleagues and the conversations he had with them. The Takeaway Considering that the average online reader loses interest after about 15 seconds, personalizing your mixed media content is an interesting and often effective approach. “I mean, clearly he made the video just for me,” Jepson said. “It’s an interesting case study.” And while this sort of personalization is memorable, it’s also extremely time-consuming. So if you set out to create it, be absolutely sure you’re targeting the right people. There’s nothing worse than taking the time to produce something highly customized, only to find out you’ve sent it to someone who doesn’t have the decision-making power you need. 5. Coca Cola Source: ShareaCoke.com Back in 2011, Coca Cola launched its famous “Share a Coke” campaign in Australia, bringing it to the U.S. in 2014. It was an effort to reach millennials, in which each bottle contained one of the most popular first names assigned to that generation. Eventually, bottles contained semi-personal labels beyond first names, like “better half.” Today, according to Ad Age, over 800 first names are used. According to that same source, Coke will soon be adding surnames to bottles, like Garcia and Thompson. “Last names give us an opportunity to invite more people into the campaign,” Evan Holod, Coca-Cola’s brand director told Ad Age. “It’s just a great way to up the reach.” In addition to that effort, according CNBC, Coca-Cola Great Britain will soon be including the names of famous vacation destinations on bottles, like Hawaii and Miami. The goal of that initiative is “to remind people of the refreshment and great taste that only an ice-cold Coke can bring on a hot summer day,” read the official statement. Plus, those bottles will come with the chance to win a trip to those locales. The Takeaway Putting first names on Coke bottles was a successful move. In the U.S., it resulted in increased sales volume for the first time in roughly four years. Plus, it provides a cheap thrill — I know that I internally squeal with excitement when I actually find a bottle that says “Amanda.” The last name move, however, could be a bit different. While there is the option to customize your own bottle labels at ShareaCoke.com — which allows you to write whatever you want, like a customized event hashtag or something like “congratulations” — it could be deemed as exclusionary to those with unique or hyphenated last names. For example, while my feelings aren’t hurt knowing that I won’t find a bottle labeled with “Zantal-Wiener,” I’m not about to pay $5 for a customized one, either. So when you set out to personalize a product, make sure it’s appropriately customized to reach the right segment of your audience, but isn’t restrictive, either. 6. Amazon Amazon’s personalization efforts aren’t exactly new. Since at least 2013, its product curation and recommendation algorithm has made for headlines and case studies. And yet, every time I visit my Amazon homepage, I can’t help but scroll down and get a kick out of its recommendations for me. Have a look:
Those who know me are aware of my borderline obsession with hip hop, which is also the motivation for a lot of my online shopping behavior. Clearly, Amazon has taken notice. And as I continued scrolling down, the fitting personalization went on. There was a header reading “For a night in” with recommendations on what to stream on Amazon Prime — an activity that comprised the majority of my weekend. Its recommendations for dog and kitchen products were on point, as well. After all, those are the categories where I make the most purchases. It’s not just me. When I asked my colleagues what their Amazon homepages looked like, they were equally pleased. Sophia Bernazzani, a fellow Marketing Blog staff writer (and self-proclaimed “cat mother of three”), had a plethora of personalized cat food recommendations, while Managing Editor Emma Brudner’s suggested Prime streaming titles came with the header, “Bingeable TV.” “Amazon,” Brudner remarked, “You know me so well.” The Takeaway Here’s a personalization example where we don’t have a ton of complaints. As Brudner said, Amazon seems to know us pretty well, though I do question why, as per the image above, its algorithm thought I might like to buy a pair of leg warmers. The nice thing about personalization of this nature, when it’s executed correctly, is that it often can lead to unplanned purchasing decisions. For example, the purpose of my most recent visit to Amazon was to check out its personalization features for this article. But then, I discovered that Rapper’s Delight: The Hip Hop Cookbook was in my recommended books. Did I buy something I don’t need? Sure. But I also was left delighted by the fact that it was brought to my attention with very little effort. If you’re in the business of personalizing curated items or recommendations for your customers, remember: The best part about it, for the user, is the resulting discovery of new things that we like — whether it’s a book, a tool, or an article. 7. Spotify In 2015, Adam Pasick penned a story for Quartz explaining the “magic” behind Spotify’s “Discover Weekly”: A curated playlist of tracks that it thinks a given user will like. It’s carried out, like many other personalization and recommendation platforms, largely with the help of an algorithm that determines a user’s “taste profile,” based on listening behavior and the most popular playlists among the entire Spotify audience. The technology behind it is from Echo Nest, a “music intelligence company” that was acquired, according to Pasick, by Spotify in 2014. Here’s a great diagram from the article that visually represents the process: Source: Quartz As much as I use Spotify — which is close to daily — I’ve never actually bothered listening to my Discover Weekly playlist. So after a colleague brought it to my attention, I decided to take it for a spin.
The results were hit-or-miss. There were a few new songs that I was thrilled to discover and plan to listen to again. But for the most part, my experience was similar to Pasick’s, who described many of the songs on his personalized playlist as “meh.” But those behind Discover Weekly acknowledge that personalization isn’t a perfect science. They also have suggestions for how to make it better, like adding the Discover Weekly songs you like to your library, or skipping the ones you don’t — “If users fast-forward within the first 30 seconds of a song,” Spotify Product Director Matthew Ogle and Engineering Manager Edward Newett told Pasick, “the Discover Weekly algorithm interprets that as a ‘thumbs-down’ for that particular song and artist.” The Takeaway Most personalization initiatives aren’t going to be perfect. Even with a great algorithm, they are, at best, very educated guesses as to what’s going to be applicable to your customers. For that reason, it might be best to take a conservative approach to your recommendations, especially in the earliest stages of any personalization efforts you make. This is an area where small-batch testing can be helpful. When you want to try out a personalization project or algorithm, identify your most active users, and invite them to pilot out the technology. Listen carefully to their feedback — good and bad — and see what you can do to make it better. 8. Iberia Airlines During the 2016 holiday season, Iberia Airlines customers received emails posing the question: If you could visit any vacation destination, what would it be, and who would you go with? To answer, customers were redirected to a microsite where they would fill in responses, as well as the email address of the person they wanted to travel with. Not long after that, the friend would receive an email with a holiday greeting about the dream vacation — only, in order to view the card, that person had to click a link to view it in his or her browser.
It was that last step, Skift writer Brian Sumers explained, where “Iberia … put its advertising budget to work, using cookies [with the user’s permission] so the traveler’s friend would see banners across the web, suggesting the perfect Christmas gift.” That gift, of course, was the dream vacation. Let’s say, for example, I sent one of these cards to a friend. She might subsequently see several ads while browsing that said things like, “It’s never too late to fulfill Amanda’s dream. Do it with a trip to Mykonos.” The Takeaway The idea is certainly a cute one — and around here, we’re suckers for a good holiday marketing campaign. But one of the most important items to highlight here is Iberia’s use of cookies, and the fact that the brand wasn’t sneaky about it. As per the video above, a clear request was made to the user to allow cookies, and that’s essential. Even the best customized marketing becomes less personal, and definitely less desirable if it’s carried out without the user’s agreement. 9. Twiddy
Having enough data is essential for marketing personalization — but knowing what to look at and how to use it is just as important. That’s what made a tremendous difference for Twiddy, a vacation rental company based in the Outer Banks. “Unless we had a good way of looking at the data,” Marketing Director Ross Twiddy told Inc., “how could we make good decisions?” One of the major pieces of information that Twiddy began to more closely examine was how rental volume and demand shifted from week-to-week. Noticing those trends allowed the company to start making “pricing recommendations” to homeowners, according to Inc., “on the basis of market conditions, seasonal trends, and the size and location of a home.” The week after Independence Day was one that stood out to the team in particular, in that rentals showed a precipitous drop during that period. Because Twiddy observed that trend (among others), it allowed the owners of its managed properties to start experimenting with pricing for that particular week as early as January. Not only did it benefit the customer — setting more realistic prices for lower-demand periods actually increased the bookings made for them — but it was just one way that Twiddy was delighting its customers with helpful, actionable information. It paid off, too. Since the brand began to use this data to help homeowners with decisions like pricing, its portfolio increased over 10%. The Takeaway There’s a famous saying that goes, “Help me help you.” Data, in general, can be a tremendous asset to brands. And it doesn’t have to be about your customers’ behavior — it can be about the habits of their customers, like the vacationers that rented from Twiddy’s homeowner clients. As long as it’s something that can be shared ethically — like objective buying or seasonal trends — share the data and insights with your customers that’s going to help make them more successful. That’s the type of thing that makes a brand remarkable, and can help benefit your business, too. Get Personal One of the fundamental purposes of any personalization effort is to let your customers know that you’re paying attention to them. But striking a balance between, “We think you might find this helpful” and “we’re watching you” isn’t a simple process, so be sure to do some careful research, planning, and testing before you jump into any large-scale customization initiatives. Remember that while you might be a marketer, you’re also a consumer. When it comes to experiments like these, put yourself into the shoes of the customer and ask, “Is this delightful? Or is it just creepy?” If it leans toward the latter, find out what’s giving it that vibe, and try something different. Writing a blog post is easy.
If you don’t write often, you may feel otherwise, but just follow this and you’ll be good to go when it comes to writing. Or, you can just watch the video below.

But still, you write a blog post and then what do you do?
Well, I’ll tell you this… most people forget the “marketing” in content marketing. Most people write content but don’t do a great job of promoting it.
Here’s the thing: I figured out the perfect formula to promoting content.
Best of all, it’s not complex. Heck, it doesn’t even take 30 minutes. It’s so easy that I broke it down into 6 steps.
And just to give you an idea before we dive into the formula, it’s so effective here is the traffic to my latest blog post.
35,492 visits in a week isn’t too shabby. The post didn’t do exceptionally well and it didn’t tank. It was just an average post.
Now you probably won’t see the same results as me as I’ve been doing this for a long time, but your results will be much better than what you are currently getting. Hence, I used the number of 3,549 in the title as you should be able to drive 1/10th of what I am generating.
So, let’s dive right into the formula.
Step #1: Optimize your headline
8 out of 10 people will read your headline, but only 2 out of 10 people will click through on your headline to read the rest of your article.
No matter how well written your content is, promoting it won’t be effective if no one likes your headline.
Now I know what you are thinking… I’ve already published my article, is it too late to change my headline?
Nope, you can always change your headline, just try not to change the URL of the article once it is already published. And if you decide to change the URL, use a 301 redirect.
There’s a really simple way to come up with headlines that work. Heck, it doesn’t even take more than a minute or two.
Just head over to Ubersuggest and type in the main keyword or phrase your article is about.

This report shows you all of the blog posts around the web that contain your keyword or phrase within their title. And it breaks it down by social shares, backlinks, and search traffic.
You can use this to see what is working in your space.
Ideally, you want to look for headlines that have thousands of social shares (or hundreds if you aren’t in a popular industry), at least 10 backlinks, and more than 100 estimated visits. Just like the example below.
Making your headlines similar to ones that meet those 3 criteria will increase your odds of getting more traffic.
Step #2: Add 3 internal links
The easiest way to get your new content more love is to build links.
Yes, links are hard to build, but internal links are not… plus they are still effective.
I rank for competitive terms like “digital marketing”…
A lot of it has to do with internal links. I link to my main digital marketing page within my sidebar and within my content.
Every time you publish a new blog post, I want you to go into your older content that is relevant to your newly published blog post and add a link to it. Do this to 3 of your older blog posts.
This helps with indexing and it also helps your new content rank higher on Google.
Step 3: Share your content on the social web carefully
The problem with social media marketing is that people think they can just share their content on sites like Facebook or LinkedIn and it will automatically do well.
Sadly, it won’t because billions of URLs have been shared already.
In other words, we just tend to ignore most of the links people share.
But there is a simple way to stand out and get thousands of visitors from the social web, just like I get.
So, what’s my secret?
Well, I will give you a hint. Just look at one of my most recent posts on LinkedIn:

Do you notice a pattern?
I’m evoking curiosity. In other words, I am piquing your interest and if you want to know the “solution” you have to click through to my site.
With the LinkedIn post, I tell you that marketing is going to change next year. I also make a point to say how it is going to change in a way that nobody is talking about.
I do this because we all can assume marketing will change. But by saying it is in a way nobody is talking about, it evokes curiosity. And if you want to know how it will change you have no choice but to click through over to my site to read the rest.
With my Facebook post, I also evoke curiosity. I talk about a Google algorithm update, but I hint that I have an answer to leveraging Google’s latest algorithm update. And if you want to know what it is, you have to click through over to my site.
Whenever you post on the social web, evoke curiosity if you want people to head over to your site.
The easiest way to do this is that every time you share one of your articles on the social web, add a few sentences above the link that helps pique peoples’ interest.
Step #4: Message everyone you link out to
It’s common to link out to other sites within your blog posts.
Heck, sometimes I even link out to my competition.
If you don’t ever link out to other sites, you are making a big mistake. It helps with authority and trust.
If you are using stats and data within your article, you want to cite your sources. This brings credibility to you and it helps brand yourself as an expert which can help with Google’s medic update.
Now, when you link out to a site, go and search their email address. You can typically find their email address on their website.
Or if you can’t find their email address, look for a contact page on their site, you’ll typically see a form that you can fill out.
Whether you find an email address or contact form, I want you to message each and every single site you link out to with a message that goes like this:
Hi [insert their first name],
I just wanted to say, I love your content. Especially your article on [insert the name of the article you linked out to].
I linked to it from my latest blog post [insert URL of your blog post]. It would make my day if you checked it out and even shared it on your favorite social network if you enjoyed it.
Cheers,
[insert your name]
When I send out these emails, I am getting 50 to 60% of the people to respond and share my content. But of course, my blog is popular, so for me, it isn’t too hard. But it hasn’t always been that way, and I’ve been leveraging this tactic for ages.
On the flip side, I also use this tactic on a few of my blogs that are in other niches and don’t use my name (no one knows I own them) and I am seeing success rates around 20%.
Just make sure you don’t use this tactic to ask for a link back. Your success rate will be slim.
Step #5: Send an email blast
These last two tactics produce a large portion of my results, and you shouldn’t take them for granted, no matter how basic they may seem.
If you already haven’t, start collecting emails from your site. You can use free tools like Hello Bar to create popups or sliders.
Hello Bar will plug into whatever email provider you are currently using.
Once you are up and running, every time you release a new blog post, send out an email blast.
Here’s an example of one of my email blasts.
It’s so effective it generated 13,544 clicks.
I’ve found that you can drive good traffic from emails as long as you do the following:
Scrub your list – if someone doesn’t open your emails over the last 30 or 60 days, remove them from your list. It helps keep your emails in people’s inboxes.
Send text-based emails – if you look at the email I sent, I keep it simple. No images, nothing fancy, just text and a link back to my site. It’s that simple.
Evoke curiosity – just like how I explained with the social media posts, your emails won’t do well unless you evoke curiosity.
As you write more content you will get more traffic, which will cause your email list to grow. That will also cause you to get more traffic. 🙂

I don’t know why so few sites are leverage push notifications. It’s so effective I believe I will get more traffic from push notifications in 2020 than I will from email marketing.
To give you an idea, when I analyze my competitors in the marketing arena, only 3 out of 19 use push notifications.
In other industries, the percentage is far worse, which means there is more opportunity for you.
Here’s how push notifications work….
Someone comes to your site and through their browser, they get a message if they want to subscribe to your site.
A portion of your visitors will click “allow”. With NeilPatel.com, roughly 5.4% of visitors are currently clicking “allow”.
You can send push notifications and get subscribers using a free tool like Subscribers.com.
And then when you write a new blog post, you log into Subscribers.com and click on the “Create Notification” button. From there you will see a screen where you can enter the title and description of your latest post.
As you can see from the image above, you’ll notice that I use an “icon” image, a “large” image, and I show “custom buttons.”
Using those 3 elements is the key to getting the most traffic from push notifications. Here are some of my stats from using Subscribers.
I’m getting roughly 6,000 visits from every push notification I send. That’s not too bad.
And if you are curious about what a push notification looks like, here’s what people get when I send it out.
What’s cool about push notification is no matter what website someone is on, they will see a message similar to the one above, which will bring people back to your site.
No dealing with spam filters or messages not going through. Plus, if someone isn’t online when you send a push notification, the next time they use their web browser they will see your message.

Promoting your content doesn’t have to be hard.
You don’t need “advanced” tactics or anything that is out of the box. The basics work well, and I have been using the above formula for years… literally.
Now, I know there are other things you can do to promote your content, but let’s be realistic: we are all strapped for time. And I’ve found the ones I’ve mentioned above to produce the biggest bang for the buck.

My 6-Step Content Marketing Formula That Drives 3,549 Visitors
Writing a blog post is easy.
If you don’t write often, you may feel otherwise, but just follow this and you’ll be good to go when it comes to writing. Or, you can just watch the video below.

But still, you write a blog post and then what do you do?
Well, I’ll tell you this… most people forget the “marketing” in content marketing. Most people write content but don’t do a great job of promoting it.
Here’s the thing: I figured out the perfect formula to promoting content.
Best of all, it’s not complex. Heck, it doesn’t even take 30 minutes. It’s so easy that I broke it down into 6 steps.
And just to give you an idea before we dive into the formula, it’s so effective here is the traffic to my latest blog post.
35,492 visits in a week isn’t too shabby. The post didn’t do exceptionally well and it didn’t tank. It was just an average post.
Now you probably won’t see the same results as me as I’ve been doing this for a long time, but your results will be much better than what you are currently getting. Hence, I used the number of 3,549 in the title as you should be able to drive 1/10th of what I am generating.
So, let’s dive right into the formula.
Step #1: Optimize your headline
8 out of 10 people will read your headline, but only 2 out of 10 people will click through on your headline to read the rest of your article.
No matter how well written your content is, promoting it won’t be effective if no one likes your headline.
Now I know what you are thinking… I’ve already published my article, is it too late to change my headline?
Nope, you can always change your headline, just try not to change the URL of the article once it is already published. And if you decide to change the URL, use a 301 redirect.
There’s a really simple way to come up with headlines that work. Heck, it doesn’t even take more than a minute or two.
