Miner’s Pie
Serves 4-6
Ingredients:
Filling:
1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil
1 yellow onion, chopped
1 large leek, white and light green parts, halved lengthwise and cut into 3/4 - inch pieces
1 bay leaf
Kosher salt
2 pounds ground beef
3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh thyme
4 tablespoons tomato paste
3 tablespoons all purpose flour
1/2 cup ale, such as IPA
1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
3/4 cup frozen corn, thawed
3/4 cup frozen peas, thawed
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
Freshly ground black pepper
Topping:
3 pounds russet potatoes, peeled, cut into 1-inch chunks, and rinsed well
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
2/3 cup whole milk (or half-and-half, for a richer taste)
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
2 eggs, beaten
3/4 cup coarsely grated Monterey Jack or Colby Cheese
Instructions:
Make the filling:
In a very large skillet over medium heat, warm the olive oil until shimmering.
Add the onion, leek, bay leaf, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt and cook, stirring frequently, until softened, about 4 minutes.
Add the ground beef and cook, stirring and breaking up any clumps, until no longer pink, about 10 minutes.
Add the garlic, thyme, and tomato paste and cook, stirring constantly, until fragrant, about one minute.
Adjust the heat to medium, add the flour, and cook, stirring constantly, for 1 to 2 minutes, until the flour is completely blended in.
Add the Ale, broth, and 3/4 teaspoon of salt.
Adjust the heat to high and bring to a simmer, using a wooden spoon to scrape the bottom of the skillet to loosen and dissolve any browned bits stick to the pan, until the filling is thickened but still saucy, about 15 minutes.
Add the corn and the peas and set the skillet aside, off the heat to cool slightly.
Remove the bay leaf, add most of the parsley, and stir to mix.
Taste and adjust the seasoning with additional salt, if necessary, and pepper to taste.
Scrape the mixture into a broiler-safe 2-quart casserole dish, spread evenly, and set aside.
Preheat the oven to 450* F with a rack in the upper-middle of the oven.
Make the topping:
Put the potatoes in a large pot filled 3/4 of the way with water.
Boil until potatoes come apart easily when poked with a fork, about 20 minutes.
Pour the potatoes into a strainer in the sink, and when the water has been drained completely, put potatoes into a large bowl.
Mash the potatoes with a potato masher thoroughly.
Add the melted butter and stir it into the potatoes.
Add the milk, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, pepper to taste, and the Parmesan cheese and stir to incorporate.
Taste and adjust the seasoning with additional salt and pepper, if necessary, and set aside to cook for about 20 minutes.
Add the eggs to the potatoes and stir to incorporate.
Spoon the potatoes over the filling, spreading them evenly and making sure they reach to the edges of the casserole dish.
Sprinkle evenly with the Monterey Jack.
Place the dish on a large baking sheet and bake until the filling is heated through and the potatoes are puffed slightly, about 20 minutes.
Take out of the oven, and sprinkle with the remaining parsley and serve hot.
@heathcliffgirl1847 I hope you still have those leeks. If not, then that’s alr.

Turn Back Time ~ Devil Fruit Reveal
Thanks to the amazing @apirateslifeforbudgie for helping bring this bizarre fruit to life! In my brain the design was more pretzel-like held together with a cherry stem, but tbh if I saw something like that irl I wouldn't eat it, much less make my girls eat it!
I call it the fuse fuse fruit but maybe I should call it the Rebecca Sugar fruit considering the concept is entirely inspired by Steven Universe :3 Like most devil fruits, it was destined to reach both Candy and Andrea, and even has the audacity to be dual colored exactly to the besties color schemes.
This weird lil thang gives its user (or in my AU - users) the ability to fuse organic and non organic items to other items to create something entirely new. It only works for organic x organic or non-organic x non-organic fusing -- so far anyways.
Additionally, it also has the power to defuse an item back to its base components. Think a pie - it can be reverted back to all the original ingredients used to make it.
Awakened - this fruit is fucking terrifying. It can fuse anything big or small to be whatever the user wants it to be. It defies the line of fusing organic and non-organic matierals together, going as far to even fuse different species together! It all depends on the image the user has in mind as the final result. That said, its de-fusing power is even more terrifying. Not only can it be used to reduce an item to its base components - but shit - AWAKENED? that shit will revert an item to fucking minerals and ATOMS.
:D That's all for now folks!

TBOSAS on Crack short take (61)
Lucy Gray: Hey, Panlo~.
Panlo: *ignores Lucy Gray*
Lucy Gray: Panlo? Panny? Pablo? Panpan? Panini? Peter Pan, don’t you ignore me-
Panlo: Go away, Baird!
Lucy Gray: You’re so funny. Do you want a cookie?😀
Panlo: I don’t want your bird food. Besides, my Mentor gave me 3 tuna sandwiches for breakfast earlier.
Lucy Gray: Gaius was here?
Panlo: Don’t you dare touch my Mentor, Baird. He’s mine.
Lucy Gray: No promises, but can we trade sandwiches?🥺
Panlo: You already ate all of your ham sandwiches. Now, shoo.
Lucy Gray: *suddenly leans closer and whispers* I still have their wrappings, Panpan~.
Panlo: What the heck are you whispering about?!
Lucy Gray: I can use these sandwich wrappers to strangle you in your sleep-
Panlo: Ew. No. Get those things away from me, you clown.
Lucy Gray: I’ll sing you a song-
Panlo: No.
Lucy Gray: I’ll sing it for free?
Panlo: I would rather sleep.
Lucy Gray: But why?😢
Panlo: Don’t give me that look, Baird.
Lucy Gray: But-
Panlo: You even bullied poor Jessup to give up and give you his daily bread and butter!
Lucy Gray: No, I didn’t.
Panlo: Yes, you did! Look! *points at Jessup*
Jessup: *is currently talking to a rabid raccoon* Mr. Raccoon, Mr. Raccoon, do you have some daily bread to spare?
Rabid Raccoon:. . .
Jessup: The evil rainbow bird stole my butter too, Mr. Raccoon.
Rabid Raccoon:. . .
Jessup: So you’ll help me?🥹
Rabid Raccoon:. . .
Jessup: Mr. Raccoon, Mr. Raccoon, you’re now my new best friend!
Panlo: That is not normal.
Lucy Gray: Coryo and Sejanus told me that talking to rabid raccoons and playing with feral squirrels are part of the Capitol’s culture and lifestyle-
Panlo: You do know that our Mentors are not mentally “all there” in the head, right?
Lucy Gray: It’s part of their culture, Pablo!
Panlo: I beg to differ-
Lucy Gray: Don’t ignore my Mentor’s heritage!
Panlo: Talking to a garbage loving rat-dog creature is not normal!
Lucy Gray: Stop bullying poor Festus Creed, Pablo!
Panlo: I was talking about the rabid raccoons!
Lucy Gray: Panini, Jessup is fine! He’s a coal miner! He ate 15 slices of vanilla pudding yesterday-
Panlo: That’s not the point!
Lucy Gray: What point?
Panlo: You’re just like that little gremlin over there!
Lucy Gray: No, I’m not-
Mizzen: *is still tied up* I’ll get my revenge, you sea witch!
Coral: Mizzen, shut up-
Mizzen: Just you wait! My Percy Price and I will takeover the pizza industry and rule Panem with my cheesy crust recipe!
Coral: You don’t even cook!
Panlo: *turns to Lucy Gray* Do you want to end up like Mizzen?
Lucy Gray: But I want to eat tuna!
Panlo: You even drank Lamina’s orange juice a minute ago.
Lucy Gray: So?
Panlo: It was 2 gallons, Baird! 2 freaking gallons!
Lamina: My orange juice!😭
Lucy Gray: Lammy cries all the time-
Panlo: Because of you!
Lucy Gray: And Mizzen!
Panlo: You’re not even denying it!
Lucy Gray: Don’t be such a sore loser, Panini-
Panlo: Dont call me that.
Lucy Gray: Panini.
Panlo: I’m going to sleep-
Lucy Gray: Panini, feed me!
Panlo: Then ask Coral and her gremlin!
Lucy Gray: No! She’s going to bully me again!😭
Panlo: Then steal something from Brandy!
Lucy Gray: Heck, no! I don’t want to get bitten!
Panlo: Brandy doesn’t bite.
Lucy Gray: Yes, she does! Look! *points at Brandy*
Brandy: *is biting Tanner’s new shoes for no reason*
Tanner: Brandy, stop chewing my expensive boots! Domitia gave them to me as a gift!
Brandy: *growls at Tanner* Mine!
Tanner: Get your own shoe!
Lucy Gray: *turns to Panlo* She might have that “werewolf” disease-
Panlo: That doesn’t exist!
Lucy Gray: The werewolf disease is not a myth, Panini! Coryo and Festus told me all about it!
Panlo: Then ask Wovey!
Lucy Gray: Wovey will bully me too!
Panlo: She’s a sweet child!
Lucy Gray: She ain’t sweet to me!
Wovey: That’s what you get for eating my apple berry pie without asking me first, Birdy.😊
Lucy Gray: I already said that I was so sorry, Wovey!
Wovey: Then give me my pie back.
Lucy Gray: *turns to Panlo* Help me, Panpan!
Panlo: For the last time-
Lucy Gray: Help your poor struggling sister-
Panlo: You’re not my sister!
Lucy Gray: Fine! I’ll tell Gaius that you’re secretly in love with him!
Panlo: What?! No, I’m not! Gaius is like a brother to me!
Lucy Gray: You want him to be your boyfriend?! Oh, that’s so sweet of you, Panini!
Panlo: I never said that!
Lucy Gray: Then give me your tuna sandwiches!
Panlo: Give me back my hair curlers first, you clown!
Lucy Gray: *giggles* Lol. No.
Panlo: Then go bother Treech the Leech instead!
Lucy Gray: Ok! *turns to Treech* Hi, Bestie~!😘
Treech: No! Go away! I’m allergic to rainbow colored birds!
Lucy Gray: Treech the leech~!
Treech: *runs and climbs a tree*
Lucy Gray: I can climb trees too!
Treech: Get away from me!
Lucy Gray: Give me your sandwiches!
Treech: Never, you beast!
Panlo: Well, time to sleep-
Brandy: Yo, Pablo!
Panlo: Ugh! What do you want now?!
Brandy: Can I bite your shoes?🥺
Panlo: Be gone, werewolf!

tell me about cornish history?
(you dont even understand i almsot cried when i saw this thank you)
OK SO for context my mums side of the family is cornish and so i have quite a random specific knowledge of its history and ill stick to my favourite parts, namely cornish pasties and tom bawcocks eve (although i could also talk abt humphrey davy for ages and the mining lamp lmao)
(idk if pasties are a widely known thing? but they’re these like pastry parcels with savoury fillings that look something like this:
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b272ec5e09b828e0cf377435be8873bd/c80f61d860f2071a-77/s400x600/8d3f7682dcb2fa89815212950481a1e370ee97ee.jpg)
(my favourite filling being cheese and onion hands down))
but anyway basically they have these pastry handles almost on the edge with no filling (almost like a pizza crust) where the pastry’s sealed and it’s quite big and has around 20 crimps traditionally and it was brought in solely so that miners could bring them into the mines for lunch. they would have rly dirty hands from all the mining yk and so would hold the handle bit so as not to get the part they eat dirty and then so that they didn’t have to carry too much half of it would be savoury and the other half sweet (ive never actually seen a sweet pasty so idk how true this is but still). i could also talk abt the mines for ages they’re so cool and tragic but imma leave that there bc i wanna talk abt tom bawcocks eve
i don’t actually know how true it is obviously but tom bawcocks eve is basically a celebration each year in a village in the south west of cornwall called mousehole where they light these lights and eat stargazy pie which is basically a fish pie to put it simply. it originated from when there was a famine in im guessing probably around the start of the 20th century? but don’t quote me on that, due to a rly big storm which meant they couldn’t go fishing, fish being a staple of their diet, as well as it ruining crops etc.. this guy called tom bawcock then risked it and went out in the storm to go fishing, and so saved the village bc he got them food.
a lot of my knowledge of it comes from a children’s book by antonia barber lmao called the mousehole cat but i’m also pretty sure that there’s some truth to this. there’s also a folk song about it which is cool
this is stargazy pie and the mousehole lights btw:
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/caae58c695458469b9aca995d2614d7b/c80f61d860f2071a-85/s250x250_c1/0402868cbf29f2b9cf85ff37c812242e7d733d70.jpg)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b3577b0d009c21d30d5fef79e871c2c1/c80f61d860f2071a-2b/s400x600/882dfa218fa631b8147a01b8d373605a5a3ed2ea.jpg)
(i’ve never actually been to mousehole on tom bawcocks eve bc it’s the 23rd december but ive seen the lights most years at new years and i kid you not i have listened to the mousehole cat on cd every night to get to sleep since i was like 6 i cannot get to sleep without it)
if anyone sees this and sees any inaccuracies PLEASE tell me this is me picking up tidbits of information throughout my life and stitching them together so it’s likely i’ve got something wrong although it’s niche enough that no one will hopefully notice lmao
#ok so i may have rambled a bit#i’m kinda sad tho bc i won’t go there for like 2 months#so you got me at quite a wistful time#but again thank you thank you#there are so many more aspects i could talk abt lmao but i love these the most sooo

Nearly every single modern computer utilizes cobalt, a mineral whose supply chain is so heavily dominated by slave labor that it's practically impossible to ethically source. Ignoring AI, it is even ethical to do digital art at all? The production of a drawing tablet is not a victimless crime.
I feel you when you want to reduce this to something as simple as a comparison. But bear with me (or alternatively, I put a tl;dr/conclusion at the end).
Much of capitalism is unethical - yes. I agree with this point completely. It's impossible to completely avoid unethical consumption in the world we live in. But it's good to be thoughtful of it and I think businesses and governments responsible for bad practice should be held accountable. Sadly I can't change the world on my own in any meaningful way, but i'll do my part where I can & vote people into power that care about this too.
Taking your comparison for a second, I feel like the art project of that OP was asking a much more direct "I bought cobalt I didn't need and then turned into a children's toy, could this be art?". And my reply was basically yeah sure it could be art, but was it worth it? My point is that I'm not sure on that last part, and leaning towards a 'no'. They specifically sourced it unethically and made that the center piece, which is distinct from the utilitarian nature of consumer electronics we need to get through our lives. Unethical sourcing of art can be a goal or statement (like here cw dead pets) but will then of course still be a part of it. I don't think ethics were considered for the post we're discussing though and it instead only discussed the very unproductive 'is it art' discourse. This, of course, matters about as much as my "dick" being objectively "long" or not.
Maybe getting a little sidetracked, but I also want to mention that cobalt is an extremely useful metal, whereas AI.. well.. i've mentioned the very human cost of mturk and the wholesale theft of the entire internet. There's also:
the power required
the jobs in art it threatens and therefore the skilled labor we stand to lose if we're not careful
the inevitable price hike and betrayal of the public as soon as alternatives are out competed (this will happen)
the risks of biases (racism, ableism, sexism) in an opaque weighted system like AI & the fact we cannot deal with this except for slapping some extra prompts in front
AI poisoning our actual collective knowledge with untrue shit. Recent cases in point being the hilarious fake mouse dick science being published and the ai generated inaccurate servals on google, but there's a lot more going on
the risks of companies and people in power using AI to more efficiently screw everybody over and hide behind 'machine told me so' accountability loopholes
the risks of AI being used in all sorts of malinformed use cases
But what are the gains? What do we stand to win? Call me cynical, but we already had an infinite amount of pictures at our fingertips, as well as all the mediocre writing you could ever want (but actually much better because someone loved writing it). I feel like all these general AI's are good for is filling the pockets of some very rich robber barons and grifters, as well as diluting everything that's beautiful and true in the world.
Quick sidenote - Some specialist AI have genuinely already improved the world, like with medical screenings, but even then it's hard to really call it a win because reverse engineering the reasoning of an AI is so fucking hard. And again, they're a slippery slope with insurance companies wanting a piece of that pie badly, just so they can apply their 'justified' penalties to people not even sick yet.
tl/dr; So in conclusion, no, I don't think your comparison holds up. I agree that it sucks that so much of necessary consumption is unethical in ways we can't easily fix as consumers. But one thing bad does not equate other thing good. If anything, it should inspire you to do better where you can make a difference and hold the ones responsible for the exploitation in this world accountable.
Don't let it eat you up though. I'm not even saying you can't use it for inspiration ever. But any art based on these generated pictures cannot be divorced from the ugly side we'd rather not see: the underpaid army of technically not slaves and the wholesale theft of everything.
also sorry but i couldn't not include this (source: matt bors)

Shining Force Country Guide Translation - Part 2
The usual pie chart legend:
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ca387f8005ec902f1d7452554e082c87/20b98f29639e309f-41/s540x810/28d241a0bdb259813e841ea304c9bb1ef7bc7325.jpg)
Alterone
Population: 5000 inhabitants GNP: 27000 gold
Species Ratio:
Since it's a country founded on mining, there are many of the physically strong dwarves. Also, there's notably not many centaurs. From this data, one might wonder if Alterone's army is lacking.
____
No cure for being spoiled rotten by money
A newly prosperous country in the mountains at the center of West Rune. Around 200 years ago, a town was built to extract ore from the northeastern mines, and as the population sharply grew in a short span of time, government became chaotic, and it failed to become a stable city-state. After that, Guardiana mediated things and assigned a administrator to it, and staying 99 years under this concession, its political situation came under control. Its independence was recognized 100 years ago, and it became a constitutional monarchy headed by the administrator from Guardiana.
Their main activity is steelworks using their abundant mineral resources, and their production of processed goods such as weapons and armor increases year after year. Also, a mineral of extraordinary hardness (maybe Mithril?) was found in the mine opened to celebrate the centenary of the country's founding, and exportation has gone up by a remarkable 180 percent. In a single year it became a focus of commerce. The industrial policies enforced by the current King Charles Granard Culprang Don IV, known as the "Miracle of Alterone", restored the economy.
The citizens are gentle and heavily inclined towards pacifism. Because of the barren and mountainous terrain they used to lead a frugal lifestyle, but the sudden rise in life standards led to eccentric changes in their culture (ostentation of the nouveau riche). As an example of this, they've bought every work of art they could get their hands on from Rindo and such places, getting also the antipathy of several countries with that. On the other hand, neighboring countries like Guardiana couldn't renew their own economy without keeping connections with Alterone, and thus more complicated international problems formed.
-The castle town surrounded by forest. A road was built to facilitate the delivery of goods between them and Guardiana. Plenty of times you can see carriages doing five round trips in a single day. Guardiana's economic growth depends on Alterone.
-The royal family and the townspeople went from rags to riches all of a sudden. Because that, they are not wise on how to spend the money. They are obsessively indulging themselves with acts such as buying works of art of dubious origins from Rindo merchants. You can't call that real enjoyment.
Hobbit discourse maybe? The pie chart definitely doesn’t indicate many dwarves as the text does, so they have likely been swapped with hobbits. As usual.
Romanization of the king’s name taken from the GBA version. It sounds a little different in japanese but I couldn’t find any meaning to it so I don’t think it matters.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/31e9b1fa94ea0d0cfbd3fca1a014bdd4/20b98f29639e309f-3b/s540x810/67a360b175e236f8bf36c5712c56f256bca4f21a.jpg)
Rindo
Population: 3000 inhabitants GNP: 6250 gold
Species Ratio:
The place with the biggest human population in the Rune continent. The population count here only includes the residents, if you counted the travelers staying there as well, it would go up to 6000 people. Since it doesn't have an army, the amount of centaurs is even lower than that of Alterone. ____
The leading power of a liberal economy is a country based on commerce
A trading country that has just passed the 200 years mark, located at the easternmost point of West Rune, surrounded by mountains from three directions and facing the ocean in the remaining one. It was founded mainly by immigrants from fishing villages in the Guardiana southeast. They named the land they first landed on through their sea route "Costa de Alexis", after the royal family of Guardiana. At first, it was mainly a fishing country, but eventually progressed in the arts of shipbuilding and sailing, as a coastal nation tends to. Currently they're active on both sides on the continent facilitating commerce, and their trade with inland areas supports the economy.
When it comes to politics, they have a parliamentary democratic system, but the true power is in the hands of the merchant guild, as many of the voters are affiliated with it. The current leader, Mr. Mocha Doccha, has been elected for the tenth time (each term lasts three years) and has a huge approval rate. His mercantile policies were highly recognized for turning a developing country into a model of economic growth, but on the other hand, there are those on East Rune who mockingly call him "the west's wallet".
As a country built by immigrants, it has a more liberal ideology, and as the gateway to the western continent it sees a big mix of different cultures. Its educational standards are also high, and wealthy merchants show more of their influence by having the education of scientists and artists under their guard. The laboratory of Dr. Crock, renowned as the greatest scientist of the century, was also built with the support of Zacha Doccha (the leader's son-in-law). A project to expand on tourism was also recently announced, with the intent of increasing domestic demand. An overhaul of the urban area, also related to stimulating the economy, was approved by a majority of the parliament. The first step planned for it is the construction of a theme park. As it hasn't been announced yet, details are still unknown.
-Rindo is the heart of commerce in West Rune. It often trades with Guardiana and Alterone. From its harbor, it is establishing trade routes with continents other than Rune. It is a merchant country willing to brave the empty ocean.
-It specializes in importing rare items from other continents. The townspeople have the Rindo theater (playhouse) as entertainment all year. And once per year, the visiting circus becomes the greatest attraction. However, due to several issues, it did not come this year.
Romanization of Rindo’s leader also from the GBA version, though the son-in-law is my own take, as I don’t believe he’s mentioned anywhere.
Mocha Doccha's title is something like chairman of president of a council. Since these countries are implied to be little city-states and I don't care much, I've been sticking with "mayor" as the english versions do, but there's mentions of a parliament here so I switched to a vague "leader" just like the GBA version does, which makes me think they faced similar dilemmas translating that. Listen I don't politics okay, it's already wack enough to be constantly googling systems of government because of freaking, 90's rpg book.
Costa de Alexis = Alexis' Coast in portuguese and maybe also spanish but don't quote me on the later. Alexis has already been mentioned as the name of Anri's dad, but this is 200 years in the past so there was probably another king with that name. Makes it weird that they didn't give a number to either but whatever.
The event section for this town brings up a different point of view on its funding of the sciences:
Dr.Crock’s strange experiment?
The self-proclaimed genius, Dr. Crock. He is currently developing a iron armor, the “Steam Suit”, with help of his assistant, Guntz. By the way, his experiments have been failing a lot. “It’s because that darn mayor won’t fund our work!”, says the doctor. “Man, when will we ever finish this Steam Suit...” laments Guntz.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/576ff895c2d27a286a948f8eea571d23/20b98f29639e309f-d9/s540x810/433986e26caf8cff605d4252a744ca237dafc74b.jpg)
Manarina
Population: 200 inhabitants GNP: Unknown
Species Ratio:
Since it's the country of magic, the ratio of elves is relatively high, while that of species with low magic talent such as centaurs and dwarves is low. The 19% percent in the "others" category is mostly monsters of unknown species. ____
Spiritual ideals as the basis of collectivism
The western coast of West Rune has the typical coastal climate, with a rain precipitation of over 2000 millimeters and warm temperatures, that give place to lush forests. The spiritual country of Manarina expands from these forest region to the mountains.
It is recorded in the ancient "Book of Genesis" that, around 3000 years ago, the first generation's Otrant (the current Otrant is of the 34th generation, full name Otrant Eismann, also knows as the "Thousand Eyes Guardian") retreated to this land to train magic, and that's how the country came to be. After that, mages came from many other lands idolizing the powers of the successive Otrants, and formed a commune of sorts. It was a primitive collectivist community with loose social and spiritual ranks based on one's magical power. Even nowadays its structure as a country remains lax, with only Otrant's authority as a constant. Citizens only have to pay taxes to fund public works, and don't have any political duties.
They entrust their economic activities to Rindo's merchant guild, and also follow the same currency as Rindo. Many citizens make their living out of magical materials and magic-infused goods.
In this Manarina of harsh spiritual discipline, frugality is seen as a virtue. As most people follow an ideology of stoicism, there isn't much entertainment. Only those on top of this magical world are respected by people of the other countries, and in Shade, a state of similar religious inclination, the people of Manarina are respectfully known as "people of the holy scriptures".
-Manarina is a single mansion being built upon over and over. If you want to go live in Manarina, first you must build your own room. It's common for rooms to be taken over if the owner left for too long.
-There's no entertainment in Manarina. That isn't because everyone is training hard. Since they work on plenty of weird studies, there's not a moment of boredom. They sure use up all their funding, but that might not be a great thing after all. There really seems to be a bunch of weird people there.
Either I’m very bad at reading charts, or the hobbits and dwarves are swapped again.
Otrant's name romanization taken from the GBA version. Also Otranto is a town in Italy, but idk if that was anything to do with anything.
(All-seeing Guardian isn’t a bad adaptation of the title at all, I just went with the more literal “thousand eyes” as we know Otrant has literally more eyes than the average person anyway)
And no I don't know where they are seeing forests in Manarina either, the geographical description for this one is very weird.

A PIE A DAY KEEPS THE DIET AWAY AND OTHER TALES
Before we look at the microbiome and the workings of our digestion, I am reminded of the expression a fat friend of mine uses.
Instead of the old saying that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, he used to say to me, a pie a day keeps the diet away.
Other expressions such as salad dodger, gives you an idea of the shape of the man.
A huge amount of our overall mass is dedicated to digestion of food and drink. The purpose of eating is to convert food into energy. There are thirteen essential vitamins we need to have in our diet, and fifteen minerals.
Surprisingly, all the vitamins were only formally categorised and given names or numbers, in the twentieth century. Before then, humans had worked out that certain foods were good for health. An obvious example of this was lime and lemon juice to drastically reduce the chances of sailors getting scurvy.
Our digestive system is obviously extremely clever at extracting all these vitamins and minerals, and the best way to ensure we get them all is to eat a great variety of food.
It’s only in recent years that nutritionists and others in similar fields of study, have come to the conclusion that ultra processed food is in the most part, not helpful as part of a healthy diet.
Other revelations are that there should be a good mix of probiotic and prebiotic foods. Probiotics are foods like live yoghurt and any other type of food or drink that contains good live digestive microorganisms.
This is adding to the existing trillions that live in our gut, boosting their numbers. Prebiotics are foods that we used to call roughage. Green leaf vegetables, whole grain and nuts, and anything else that our gut bacteria like to chew on.
Eating well is also primarily about feeding the brain. The brain is perhaps the most active muscle in the body. It needs a constant supply of enriched blood to keep it active.
In what is considered by many to be the greatest discovery of this century so far, the connection between gut and brain is the most exciting.
The connection between these two parts of the body even has its own set of direct nerve communicating neurons. When one part suffers in any way, the other also may have problems.
There is another crucial element that is essential for the life of the healthy gut and brain, and every single other body cell. This is oxygen and when there is a minor gut problem such as constipation, bloating or other irritation, a boost in the form of the supplement Oxy Powder may help.
Oxy Powder uses magnesium oxide and citric acid that is designed to release nascent oxygen into the bowels. This should help liquefy any compacted faecal matter.

It’s designed to remove any other toxic waste and help to rebalance the digestive system.

“thank you, doll. both you and my ma are to blame for that.” for who he is today. “yeah, ‘cause we take playwriting classes together and there’s only eighteen people in our group so it’s impossible to avoid blair the grinch. but i guess that’s life, right? you sometimes have to spend time with people you don’t particularly like.” comes an honest answer, followed by a sweet smile and a shrug. it’s no big deal. “alright, glad we’ve got that settled early on and that we agree on three,” he laughs, melting into a puddle the longer he dwells on the possibility of a future like that — just them and their babies. “do we want them to be close in age?” they’ve had this conversation before, countless times while playing house, but he can’t help himself. it’s his favorite thing in the world. daydreaming with her. “hey, no… froot loops are my friends. they don’t rot my insides. if they’re so bad, why don’t they hurt my belly, huh?” huffing as he turns into a froot loops’ defense attorney, billy picks up the familiar red box again and turns it over to scan the list of ingredients. “mmm, maltodextrin! don’t know what it is, but it sounds absolutely delicious,” he muses, sarcasm heavy in his voice, pale blue eyes widening the longer they linger on the small text on the side. “red 40, yellow 5 and 6, blue 1. it’s a wonder i don’t glow in the dark.” which could be a possible side effect of having this radioactive mix for breakfast almost every single day. “but look, here it says, vitamins and minerals.” he points his finger to the bolded letters, brows furrowing in confusion. how can it have both?
“and didn’t god also create froot loops?” he inquires seriously, struggling to keep his composure when lucy gray goes on a rant about god’s creations and fake food, it takes him back in time to when he was just a little boy and she’d lecture him like this at least once a day. his heart soaring sky-high, ocean hues brimming with nothing but sheer admiration, he even finds himself nodding absently in agreement. she’s so cute when she’s all worked up like this. “well, yeah, but also back in the day, a lot of diseases went undiagnosed due to the lack of resources. not enough doctors with proper training. if you were infertile, it was god’s will. if you had cancer, it probably went undiagnosed until it was too late. and i don’t think they even knew what adhd or autism were. they labeled those people as crazy, put them in institutions and went on with their lives.” he wouldn’t be himself if he simply agreed with her. he has to try and rile her up, coax another rant out of her.
“i don’t think i’ve ever had organic froot loops.” thinking out loud, he finds himself nodding along to her little lecture. after all, there are things that even he can’t argue with. he inspects the box that she’s holding, doesn’t spot any strange ingredients and figures he’ll have to remember to only buy this kind in the future. “cocaine and bad food equal each other? does that mean we’re skippin’ mcdonald’s tomorrow and findin’ ourselves a local dealer instead?” he teases with a laugh, loving how passionate she is about eating healthy, impressed by how much she knows on the subject. “the blue one,” he repeats, but this time doesn’t argue, couldn’t when she’s smiling at him so sweetly. he simply puts the jar of jif’s peanut butter back on the shelf and reaches for the one called richard’s. 100% peanuts. sounds promising, he thinks, handing it to lucy gray before pushing the cart farther down the aisle. candy. he’ll make sure to find organic gummy bears so she doesn’t take them away. “i mean, since you want to have my babies, guess i need to make sure they don’t grow up fatherless and crippled,” he deadpans, struggling to remain serious for a second longer. “you’re the cutest, pajarita. you know that, right? an actual angel.” even when she tells him to save the pie for tomorrow. “hey, what’s that? did i spot a paparazzo?” laughing when she pulls out her phone and takes a picture of him, he makes sure to beam at the camera. it’s followed by a series of goofy faces, his tongue out, eyes crossed, beanie pulled halfway down his face, to give her some extra footage. “aww, look at yourself! my new lock screen.” and he does just that, sets the photo of lucy gray with the biggest smile on her lips, hands forming a heart, as his brand new lock screen, then shows it to her, seeking approval.
“well, i am proud you are that guy.” she replies honestly, not afraid to admit that part. “you have to spend more time with them?” lucy gray wonders, after catching how he said that part. “that works too.” the brunette amusingly smiles, she wouldn’t mind that either. “i don’t care if they’re delicious, they’re rotting your insides. especially if your eatin’ them everyday.” she shook her head, she was very big on eating from the earth and growing her own things. when she couldn’t eat her own garden in the winter or at inconvenient times like now, she always tried to eat whatever is the healthiest at the store.
“god didn’t give us wholesome foods to fill our bodies with fake food. yes it does affect our bodies. what we eat is important. does a flower blossom and grow if you feed it bad stuff? it don’t, right? it doesn’t flourish at all. our bodies work the same way. food dyes and the same ingredients they put in bleach does affect our health and future children— why do you think things like cancer, infertility, adhd and autism were lower back in the old days? oh, cause there wasn’t all this processed food dye crap.” her brow perks, giving him a knowingly look.
“besides that…organic food is tastier anyway.” so she doesn’t see what the big deal is. she takes this box of cereal he chooses and stands up in the cart to throw it back on the shelf, getting down the organic version of froot loops. switching the back over. “colored pretty with natural things AND made with real sugar. and with a total of eight ingredients opposed to that box…” the kelloggs she points at, “that has like FIFTY ingredients just for cereal. mmhm.” smiling triumphantly, sitting back down and placing the organic cereal in their cart. “oh, cocaine and bad food probably equal each other.” cocaine probably is safer at this point. grinning at the kiss beneath her eye, her heart picking up every time he comes close to her like that, hands that placed on his cheeks slip away when he pulls back to grab peanut butter.
“no…not that one darlin’. go with the natural one, that’s called richards. in the blue jar.” she sweetly smiles, at least he’s trying. she appreciates that. “oh, but when you listen to me about eatin’ healthy— you’ll have the strength of hulk to build one hundred bird feeders. you can get pie, but save it for tomorrow.” so his system doesn’t overload on so much sugar in one sitting. when he takes a picture of her, lucy gray smiles for it and holds a heart shaped sign up. once it snaps, she gets the idea to get the other point of view for her instagram and camera roll so she takes out her phone and turns it on her camera app to get a picture of him rolling the cart like a mom.
#billysgirllol#IKR?? theyre the cutest :')) im never getting over how precious they are#they argue like an old married couple over a box of cereal lol

Plato Turkey & Pumpkin Meat Bars

They are also air-dried for nutrient retention and a good old-fashioned taste that will please even the pickiest dog. It's not hard to see why these are a must-have in any pet lover's arsenal of treats. They also come in different flavors. Probably the best part is that they can be broken into smaller pieces for training or small dogs.
The best thing about these is that they are made in the USA! It takes a lot of pride to manufacture pet products in your home, and it's even better when they are genuinely made with the highest quality, natural ingredients.
Awesome Pawsome Super Pumpkin Treats

These all-natural treats can be given as a special reward or a tasty snack for daily supplemental feeding read more.
Kristen's Picks
Nothing says "fall" quite like pumpkin, and it's a flavor many dogs love. The best part is that it's a low-calorie, nutritious snack. However, some pumpkin treats aren't the healthiest, so read labels carefully.
To avoid potential health concerns, provide your dog with the fresh pumpkin you have cooked yourself or a small canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling). In addition, Dr. Patrick Mahaney, a veterinarian, recommends avoiding products that contain sugar or artificial sweeteners. These ingredients can cause what he calls "taste deterrents" in your pet, resulting in a loss of appetite or other issues.

A popular food topper, pumpkin can be easily added to dry kibble or even baked into dog treats, ensuring your furry friend will enjoy a healthy, low-calorie snack all year round. The easiest way to do this is with Fruitables Switch, a pumpkin puree easily mixed into cooked and frozen treat recipes. Another easy pumpkin recipe is to add a dollop of banana to the mix, which is rich in potassium and vitamins B6 and B12. Choosing a grain-free, low-glycemic option for your dog, such as oats, is also a great idea. They're also high in fiber, which is a great addition to any dog's diet.

WINTER FIC REC: Below you’ll find fics that take place during the winter season.
📖 A Very Darling Christmas by @aquamarinedaffodil (133k)
It’s Harry’s first holiday season since he opened the little bakery at Astor Square and according to his best friend Zayn, he is hopelessly unprepared. With the start of the local Christmas market right around the corner and an already hectic schedule, Harry really can’t afford to get distracted.
Then again, neither can Louis, who is in the middle of directing rehearsals for a winter musical with his drama class and promised his colleague Niall that he’d focus all of his energy on the musical.
But you know what they say: promises are like pie crusts — made to be broken.
📖 like cranberries on a winter evening by @evilovesyou (57k)
Louis hates Christmas. With good reason, too. And no, he doesn’t want to talk about it.
When research for his next novel leads Louis to the website of a quirky little hotel in Northumberland, there is exactly one room available for the two weeks that Louis really wants to get away from his family.
Will the fairy lights, kind smiles, homemade pastries, and genuine friendships awaiting him in Harry Styles’ hotel be enough to cause Louis a change of heart?
📖 Baby, Won't You Look My Way? by @peachbootylouis (50k)
Or the where Louis’ routine centered life runs like clockwork until a chance hook up throws a wrench named Harry into it all. But as it may turn out a change in plans could be what Louis has needed all along.

One cabin, one bed, two ex-boyfriends. What could possibly go wrong?
📖 Take A Chance On Me by @peachypetalhazz (39k)

When Harry decides to move to London a few weeks before Christmas to pursue his dream and become the new owner of a bookshop after seeing an ad online, everyone he knows tells him he must be out of his mind. As he gets acquainted with his new life and meets a handful of incredible individuals—one of which he happens to grow particularly fond of—he slowly comes to the realisation that it may just be the best decision he's ever made.

📖 as in olden days by @scrunchyharry (18k)
Château Frontenac hotel, Christmas 1925 When his father insisted the entire family spend Christmas abroad in one of his new investments, Harry dreaded the prospect of being trapped for weeks in the biting Canadian cold, so far away from the roaring excitement of his London life. While on a holiday with his best mate Zayn, Louis meets Harry, who seems to dislike him from the start. It's just his luck he ends up getting stuck on a ski lift with Harry. Except maybe the universe knows better and he really is lucky.

It was New Year's Eve in Victorian London, and a lonely vampire could no longer resist the stunning lamplighter he watched night after night.
Or, a vampire Harry fic because what says the holidays like Victorian vampires?
📖 a taste of bliss by @beckydoesthings (1k)
It's New Year's Eve, and Louis is working. As much as he hates it, there's a few benefits to working a holiday. One is the free champagne. The second may or may not come in the form of a curly haired sous chef named Harry.

Theory: What can earthbenders bend?
I feel like every week I see people in the atla/lok tags questioning what earthbenders should or shouldn't be able to bend (mostly, can they bend blood or bone?), so I've decided to try and answer this question myself, using both the canon and science!
Here's what we'll be looking at:
At the most basic level, what is "earth"?
What makes a metal bendable?
Can earthbenders/metalbenders bend the iron in blood?
Can earthbenders bend the mineral in bone?
I'll probably try and do similar posts for the other elements, because I have many thoughts on this subject. Earth is just the most complicated one and the one I have the most thoughts on, because as you're going to see, the canon contradicts itself. Anyway, let's get started.
At the most basic level, what is earth?
Seems like this would be an easy question, right? Except it isn't, because if it was, there wouldn't be questions about why some metals are bendable and others aren't.
So lets take it back a step. What is earth? What is a rock? I think we can mostly agree that "earth" can be interpreted as "earth's crust," which is made up of rock. Rock is also a pretty loose term. It just means "an aggregation of minerals." If we want to try to quantify exactly which elements are considered "earth," one way to start is with the composition of the earth's crust.
Assuming the Avatar world is similar to ours, the crust should be mostly silicon and oxygen. Roughly 90% of earth's crust is silicate (silicon and oxygen compound) minerals. But the silicon and oxygen in the chart doesn't add up to 90% you're saying! That's okay. Most silicate minerals will have trace amounts of other elements in them too, i.e., they aren't just pure silicon and oxygen.
Here is my theory then: silicates are the primary bendable component in "earth." Beginner earthbenders are most likely focusing on the silicates, because they are everywhere and very easy for a beginner to latch onto. This isn't the only thing they are bending, but it is a hell of a lot easier for an earthbender to bend a material that has a lot of silicate in it.
I would say beyond this, they are also able to "grip" other elements in the pie chart above, but they almost always have to be combined with a silicate, or at least either silicon or oxygen in a form that naturally occurs in the earth's crust in order to do so, or else they'd be bending oxygen or pure metals. It's the compounds they bend. This brings me to our next question:
---------
2. What makes a metal bendable?
This question seems easy at first glance because the canon outright states that earthbenders bend the "impurities" in metals, but the more you look at this, the more the canon begins to contradict itself. Let's try to make some sense of this.
Starting with the basics, most metals occur naturally in earth's crust in the form of ores. Ores are not pure metal. They contain impurities, mostly other minerals, or metal bonded to another element, that would be bendable. Iron, for example, bonds with oxygen to make hematite (Fe2O3). Hematite occurs naturally in the earth's crust and is probably considered bendable in this form. especially if it is embedded in or mixed with regular silicate rock.
Let's refine this iron ore and get rid of some of those "impurities." Smelting is a common method to extract the metal. Smelting involves heating the ore to its melting point and then combining it with a chemical reducing agent to encourage the oxygen to bond with another element. Carbon is often used because oxygen will bind with it to create CO2, which floats off into the air and leaves behind the metal. After smelting, the resulting iron, called pig iron, typically contains 3-5% impurities. Pig iron tends to be brittle though, so it goes through more processing to form alloys such as cast iron or steel, which have around 2% impurities. I’d venture to say most of the metal we see commonly in Avatar is iron based, like steel.
Based on the percentage composition of the earth’s crust, metals bonded to oxygen are probably easier to bend. I would say oxygen based ores and silicates are probably the bendable “impurities.” However, the percentages of these in refined metals is very low, with 2% or less being typical. Best I can tell, platinum, which is “unbendable” has an industry standard of about 99.95% purity. So, bendable metal probably needs to be more than 0.05% impure.
This gives us a bit of a baseline. Toph, widely considered the best metalbender in the world, was able to bend a metal that contained somewhere between 0.05-2% impurities. To further illustrate the difficulty of this, Bolin states in LoK that only 1/100 earthbenders is capable of metalbending.
Here's where the canon begins to contradict itself though. On one hand, the canon says that impurities are a requirement for a metal to be bendable. On the other, there's a huge arc in LoK involving liquid mercury. Mercury is a liquid at room temperature, and it VERY RARELY occurs in its pure, elemental, liquid form in nature. Mostly it occurs as an ore, or a mineral, combined with other elements. And yet, we see metalbenders who are able to bend liquid mercury. The only explanation I can come up with for this is that they sprinkled some sand in it to create an impurity, but unless Korra had sand grains stuck in her veins, this only works up until the point that the metal is forced under Korra's skin. So I don't really know how to explain this one.
Another random fact, apparently Bryan Konietzko indicated that metalbenders of Kuvira's skill could bend precious metals such as gold. I don't know if he's saying she could bend pure gold, which also contradicts canon, or if it also has to contain impurities (in which case, why does being a precious metal make a difference?). Just something else that doesn't quite fit.
Alright, now onto the fun questions.
----------
3. Can metalbenders bend the iron in blood?
Shorter answer: In my opinion, no.
Long answer: If we completely disregard the fact that the iron in blood is not occurring in a form naturally found in the earth's crust, the actual percentage of iron in blood is actually very small. The elemental percentage of iron by mass in the human body is less than 1%. Iron percentage in hemoglobin, the iron containing component in the blood, is only 0.3%. This works out to about 3-4g iron in the human body total, which again, is rolled into extremely complicated organic compounds that are completely unlike the forms iron would be found in the ground.
This is before you consider the other element at play here: the iron is within a human body, which is most likely resisting.
Even for mercury, a demonstrably bendable metal, Suyin is unable to bend all the mercury out of Korra’s body even when she is limp and unconscious. Even Toph isn’t able to bend the remnants out when Korra begins to feel pain and resists (admittedly there was a spiritual/narrative element to this so that Korra had to overcome it by herself, but still, her resistance was annoying enough that even Toph didn’t want to deal with it). The bits of metal in the human body are probably too small for a metalbender to focus on, and even if they can, as soon as the target starts to resist, maintaining control would become very difficult. Even among bloodbenders, most need a full moon to have enough power to control a human body, and that’s with 70% water!
So no, I don't think metalbenders would be able to bend the iron in blood.
---------
4. Can earthbenders bend the mineral in bone?
This is actually an interesting question. My first instinct was to say no here. But--
Bone actually does contain an inorganic compound that comprises about 70% of bone weight: hydroxyapatite: [Ca3(PO4)2]3Ca(OH)2
I tried to find if hydroxyapatite occurs naturally outside of bone, but most of the articles I found are medical or dentistry articles. However, I did find one article that seems to suggest it may occur naturally as part of the drip system in caves that creates stalactites/stalagmites. So, potentially, and earthbender could bend hydroxyapatite.
However...
The canon has already established that waterbenders struggle to bloodbend a person outside of a full moon, despite the human body being about 70% water. If you do the math, the total percentage by weight of hydroxyapatite in the human body is probably somewhere around 10%. That means an earthbender attempting to do this has a much smaller percentage of their bendable element to work with than a bloodbender.
So, I don't think your average earthbender would be able to bend the bones in a person's body.
But, there is a complicating factor in the idea that metal should be "unbendable" and yet skilled earthbenders with the affinity for it are able to do so, despite the very small percentage of actual "earth" contained in refined metals. This would seem to suggest that earthbenders can actually bend a much smaller percentage of their element than waterbenders. So, maybe a VERY skilled earthbender (like, Toph's caliber) would be able to overcome the resistance of the human body to be able to bend the otherwise small percentage (compared to waterbenders) of bendable "stuff" in the human body.
Still, I would say the number of earthbenders who would possibly be able to do this would be the very top percentage of earthbenders, and that most of them probably have no desire to try.
So is it possible? Most likely not, but I'll give Toph-level earthbenders a solid "maybe."
---------
So there you have it. I'm not a chemist, geologist, biologist, or metallurgist, so I probably got some things wrong, but this is how I've managed to rationalize things in my mind. Let me know what you think and which element you'd like to see me analyze next!

Head full of nothing but Trish x witch reader. Like the reader is really into tarot cards (her stand could also tie into it) and gives her girlfriend readings, making her protection jars, teaching her about crystals, teaching Trish how to manifest things easily ect. AND FOR CERTAIN TRISH WOULD LOVE GLAMOUR MAGIC
Yaaaaas. Admittedly I’m not as much in practice as I’d like to be, so reader is more casual brujerias.
I’d love to say she’s supportive off the bat, but this is spoiled Trish Una after all…
Ok but, let’s be honest and approach Miss “I only drink French Mineral Water” Una with the lenses that at first she thinks witchcraft is complete bullshit.
She would probably call you a weirdo for lighting incense or cleansing anything with moon water.
Tells you to stop sprinkling salt because it’s messing up the floor.
Also gets annoyed when you do random tarot pulls at the start of every week.
However, as my former Catholic friend from Italy and I discussed, Catholics will talk so much shit about witchcraft yet they still hit up that one vieja in the side alley for any kind of remedios.
Trish is no exception to that rule because she deadass secretly thinks you’re going to hex her after she laughed at your crystal collection.
One time she also saw you burning a bay leaf with someone’s name on it, a mutual acquaintance that had been acting like an asshole. Said person ended up having the shittiest month of their lives.
You explained to her that you’ve been doing these rituals for a while and noticed hey, they actually work, so you keep it up.
Yours is a more casual approach, your book of shadows is more a scrap book page in an old diary that looks like a grocery list.
Some shit works, some doesn’t. You prefer to keep whole specimens of crystals around the house.
You explained to Trish the various crystals you had and the cultural significance of each based on extensive research.
You also give her things and she’s very touched. Because she’s a romantic, she often begins choosing jewelry that has rose quartz in it.
“I asked my rose quartz to find me someone who would love me as much as I love them, and I found you. My pink haired sweetie pie.~”
Ok, now she is obsessed with rose quartz.
Absolutely cherishes anything you give her. Especially loving the extra attention when you tell her things like “I made sure to light a candle for your show honey, best wishes!” Or when you give her one of your crystals to take on tour.
You even started carving sigils of protection in her compacts, and she swears she can feel the good intentions when she puts on her blush or highlighter.

Happy First Day of Autumn from the “Pumpkin Goddess”!
Here's my pumpkin patch photo shoot featuring my home grown pumpkins. Pumpkins are a very healthy ingredient for sweet and savoury dishes. My Mom's favourite recipe for these petite pumpkins is roasting and stuffing them with a mix of grains, mushrooms, chestnuts, nuts, and dried fruit. We also make pumpkin pie of course! These homegrown varieties called "Baby Bear" and "Winter Luxury" may look like the cheap Halloween decoration pumpkins in supermarkets, but they have much denser flesh and a more intense flavour.
Pumpkin flesh is a nutrient dense food rich in vitamin A as well as vitamin B6, K, E, and C. The fruit is also loaded with health giving minerals like iron, copper, and magnesium as well as dietary fiber. These nutrients help support the immune system as well as skin, eye, and heart health. In the autumn, we see many foods with "pumpkin" or "pumpkin spice" in the name. These usually contain only the spices from American style pumpkin pie or only small amounts of real pumpkin, so don't assume that the word "pumpkin" makes a treat healthy.

The Ladder
In a hole in the ground, there lived a lonely hobbit. It all started when Bilbo grew tired of his empty kitchen.
He hadn’t been fond of eating alone since the dwarves destroyed his pantry, but he hadn’t after Frodo joined him in Bag End. He’d eaten with the elves in Rivendell, which had been full of lovely music and pleasant conversation, and then he’d eaten with the elves, Frodo, and Gandalf when they’d traveled to the Undying Lands.
Now he was here, in Yavanna’s Garden, living in what was basically Bag End. (the actual Bag End was right next door for his parents) He had his beautiful garden back, which only mattered really because he’d been brought back to his youthful self with working hands. The house was always clean (and he’d never really liked cleaning, so that didn’t matter much to him) so he had all the time in the world to work on his maps and his stories. He got the occasional social call from neighbors or family. He ate dinner with his parents on Thursdays and went over to their home on Sundays for family nights with many cousins and aunts and uncles, but he spent the rest of his time alone. He got the same whispers he had in the Shire, but he was satisfied with his cooking and working in the garden. Except… on the days there were no social calls, no family dinners, Bilbo Baggins sat in a very quiet house and talked to nothing.
“You know-” Bilbo said to no one in particular as he weeded a particularly stubborn patch of grass out from underneath his rose bush. There was a basket of tomatoes ready to be made into a sauce, or maybe used the fish tonight, but he’d seen the weeds and wanted to deal with it before it spread. “-I would have expected the garden to take care of itself when I died. Not to be doing the same tasks as before. But here we are, fighting with weeds, aren’t we Tho-” Bilbo stopped, shook his head, and pushed that thought aside.
He made dinner for fourteen but only ate for one. The rest got put away for the multitudes of meals of the next day, but almost five years after he’d died he found himself looking at the empty table with a frown.
The next morning he perused his bookshelf until he found a collection of stories. From there, he found tales of the dwarves. He sat in his armchair until a collection of cousins knocked on the door and pulled him away, but he found what he was looking for when he was waiting for a peach pie to bake.
Dwarves belief that they return to the halls of Mahal upon their deaths. From there, they await the Final Battle. Upon the arrival of that day, they will be sent back to rebuild Arda, but until then the dwarves rest in their creator’s halls.
Bilbo hemmed over that. He wandered down to where most of the Tooks lived, asking if they had any maps or had heard of the Halls before. It was a bit of a long shot, and he wasn’t surprised when they all said no. He returned to his smial and examined his garden.
“Well-” he said to the same problematic patch of clover that refused to leave. “-I know that dwarves do like their underground tunnels and their mines. And if the Green Lady is married to the Smith, then it stands to reason that they might go underground nearby. I don’t think there’s any harm in looking, I’ll just get a bit dirty and ruin my garden, and I do that on the regular. Or I’ll fall into a great underground river and run back into Gollum.” Bilbo sighed, then went to see if he could borrow Hamfast’s good shovel.
There was a patch of yard in the back Bilbo had been planning on planting carrots in, but he had a better idea now. He wiggled his toes in the cool earth, nodded, and stretched out his shoulders. Then Bilbo Baggins put his shovel into the soil and started to dig.
It took quite a bit of time, but he didn’t get as tired as he had in his old age and he didn’t have to take as many breaks. Death might mean you didn’t have to eat, or sleep, but it was routine, and he had dinner with his parents that were tradition. One day, maybe, he’d be able to bring more than just himself and whatever his mother wanted him to bring for dessert, but he pushed the idea of muddy boots and braids out of his mind in favor of helping his mother finish up the roast.
“What are you doing, Bilbo?” his father asked during one dinner. “Gorbadoc says he hasn’t seen you at the Green Dragon in some time.”
“I’m digging a tunnel.” Bilbo said matter of factly. “I’m going to try to find the halls of Mahal.” His parents looked at each other for a minute.
“What for?”
“I… suppose it’s just because I can.”
“Have you considered asking the faunts?” Belladonna suggested as she took a second helping of mashed potatoes. “I’m sure they’d be more than thrilled to be asked to ruin a garden.” Bilbo considered that.
“I think this something I want to do myself.”
Bilbo digged and digged. The hole was big enough for him to stand in rather comfortably, though he had to dig some stair-like notches into the side so he could get in and out. It took almost a week of non-stop digging to reach literal rock bottom, and then he was left with a conundrum. He’d dented Hamfast’s good shovel, so he returned it with an apology and a promise to pay him back, but would Hamfast please lend him a good pickaxe?
Bilbo woke up that next morning with arms that were incredibly sore and demanded he take a day, if not more, off. He agreed. The dwarves had waited this long, they could wait a bit longer. Bilbo went to market, got a drink, avoided questions about what he was up to, dodged a few nosy grandparents, and returned home with arms full of goods. The next day he baked an apology pie for the Gamgees and sent his mother and father cookies, lounging for the rest of the afternoon with a good book. On the third day his arms didn’t yell at him for raising them above his head, so Bilbo hoisted his pickaxe.
“How’s your hole going?” Belladonna asked as she took out a tart to cool. It was nearly time for the harvest festivals. Hobbits loved to work in their fields and grow their goods, and that meant the harvest festivals of the Shire still went on. That meant competitions (his mother was entering a lovely pumpkin she’d been growing all year, while his father was entering in a poetry competition) and baking, canning for the winter, and family time.
“Rather well, I like to think!” Bilbo gave the bread he was kneading one last good push. “I think I’ve nearly reached it, the rocks started to change to the next type of rock underground that I read about in the book that Adamantius lent me last week. It’s supposed to mean you’ve gotten to the next layer or… something. The book was rather complicated. I suppose I’ll just have to see what happens.”
“Maybe you’ll have it fixed in time for the summer planting competitions.” His father brushed his hands off on an apron as he came in from the garden with a basket of potatoes, placing them on the counter and taking a moment to kiss Belladonna’s cheek. For a moment Bilbo wondered if soon he’d be seeing his dwarves, be able to kiss one particular cheek, but he pushed those thoughts aside. It was possible he was nowhere near being able to see his dwarves, but that was a thought he’d deal with when he came to it. He was nothing if not practical, as a Baggins (no, Baggins weren’t actually practical, he knew that now, but don’t bother telling the Baggins side that) and he didn’t want to consider that what if.
“Maybe.” he ceded. “But I’m hoping that I’ll be able to make it a permanent feature.”
Bilbo returned to his hole the day after the festivals had finally finished. His larder was filled to bursting, along with all his storage rooms, and he was just planning on doing a little bit of work before settling in with a nice book.
That plan fell a bit short, though. He drove his pickaxe in rather deeply and the earth suddenly crumbled all around him. Bilbo let out a yell as he fell through a suddenly rather large hole, landing with a rather sharp thwack on something… surprisingly soft.
When he looked around, he found that he was surrounded by an incredible amount of short, bearded people wearing multiple colors and gems.
Dwarves.
He looked up and found an incredible amount of sunlight falling on him, along with a decent amount of dirt.
It seemed he’d found the Halls of Mahal. Now the question was how to get back to Yavanna’s Gardens.
...he’d cross that road when he got to it. For now, he had dwarves to find, and, uh, oh dear. The dwarf he was sitting on didn’t look very happy. He jumped off of the poor dwarf’s back.
“I’m so terribly sorry-” Bilbo offered the dwarf a hand. They were covered in braids, with long black hair, and Bilbo tried to dust them off once they were up. “-I had no idea I’d almost broken through like that, I would’ve given some warning.”
“You’re what’s been making all that noise?” a dwarf behind him said. Bilbo turned on his heel. This dwarf was dressed like a miner.
“I beg your pardon?”
“The noise-” the dwarf gestured at the ceiling. “-for the past month, we’ve been getting this awful banging- that’s coming from you? But you’re a halfling!” There was a great deal of yelling at that as the crowd of dwarves surrounding Bilbo all realized what he was. Bilbo felt his cheeks heated up with rage.
“What do you mean a halfling fell through the ceiling?!” someone bellowed after several minutes where Bilbo couldn’t get his voice loud enough. There was a great deal of pushing through the crowd and Bilbo offered another apology to the poor dwarf he’d probably concussed in his fall.
“I’ll have you know I’m not half of anything!” He said loudly into the suddenly silent hall, but there was a further commotion.
“That’s not just a halfling that our halfling!” Bofur, that was Bofur, he knew that voice. A bald dwarf covered in tattoos practically rammed his way through the crowd and there were all his dwarves, looking alive and well and whole, no blood or funeral garb, no sorrowful letters or tearful tales from Frodo about bodies and ancient stone walls. He was hugging them, pinching cheeks and smiling as wide as he had in some time. He did a quick head count - twelve. Where was thirteen, where was-
Oh.
There he was.
Thorin was standing at the other end of the mass of dwarves in the hall, firelight glinting off the silver in his hair and around his neck. There was no sign of gold or bronze, just silver. He practically blended into the cave wall in his nearly black clothes but Bilbo met those beautiful blue eyes and something just clicked. He was covered in dirt, and in his gardening clothes. He looked a mess, he was sure of it, but Thorin was looking at him in a way that made his breath catch in his throat.
“Master Burglar.” Thorin’s voice rumbled across the nearly silent crowd.
A moment later he and Bilbo met in the center of the path, both having run as fast as their feet could carry them. Bilbo’s fingers curled into the thick, wiry hair and he inhaled the smell that was undeniably Thorin.
“I thought I told you to call me Bilbo.” he said in a thick voice after a moment. “Or should I be calling you your majesty?”
“No.” Thorin said instantly. He shook his head and Bilbo felt the gentle thuds as beads connected with his skull. “No. Never you.”
They looked at each other for a moment. Thorin didn’t have the wrinkles around his face anymore, the silver in his hair was less than it had been, but there was still that shadowed look in his eyes. Bilbo took a quick breath, then leaned up and kissed his cheek like his father kissed his mother’s, like he’d been thinking about for ages and ages.
“Hello.” he whispered. “Hello, Thorin Oakenshield.”
“Hello, Bilbo Baggins of the Shire.” Thorin’s face was flushed now, but he reached up and brushed his thumb along Bilbo’s jaw.
“That counts as a kiss!” someone bellowed. There was a loud thud and the dwarf, definitely Nori, yelped. “That hurt!”
“Bilbo can we get a boat through your hole?” Fili called. A moment later there was a thud and both Fili and Kili were there, smushing Bilbo into the center of a Durin family hug.
“A bo- what do you need a boat for?”
“I want to find Tauriel.” Kili sounded elated. “If you could get through, then she-”
“Boys, I have to get back up myself, I can’t just pull up a boat-”
“What about cheese?” Bofur piped up. Bilbo realized that the entire company had encircled him. He was surrounded in a mass of dwarves. Stinky, hugging-too-tight, wonderful dwarves that he’d missed. “Bombur’s been talking about that recipe you sent him-”
“He sent me dozens of recipes, you’ll have to be more specific-” Bombur started.
“I told you he could break in, I don’t know why you’re still not giving me money!” that was Nori again, directed at Balin.
“These are the Halls-” Balin began.
“Bullshit, this is Bilbo, he stole from a dragon! This is all in a day’s work for him!”
“Have you seen my Gimli up there?” That was Gloin. “You know, my beautiful laddy, with the curly red hair and the most beautiful eyes, I haven’t been able to find him and we haven’t heard anything about him in a long time for a while, I’m starting to get worried-”
“He just got here, Gloin, don’t start yelling about your kid again-” that was a voice he didn’t totally recognize but he saw Bifur without an axe and grinning widely as he spoke.
Bilbo looked back up at Thorin, who was smiling at him in a way that made him come into focus and drown everything else out.
“I’m glad to see you, Bilbo.”
“I’m glad to see you too.” Bilbo smiled back at him. His dwarf reached up as if to touch his face again, but faltered.
“We’ve… we’ve got a lot to talk about.”
“We do.” Bilbo agreed. “Bu-”
“Bilbo?” Someone shouted down the hole. He recognized his mother after a moment. He struggled out of the throng of dwarves much like a whale breaching for air. There was a shadow over the patch of sunlight from above, bits of dirt trickling in.
“I’m fine!” he yelled back. “Be careful, it’s a pretty hard landing at the bottom, I don’t want you to slip!”
“Wait that’s the burglar?” someone in the crowd said. There was a loud shushing noise, a thwap, and an ow.
“Are you hurt?”
“No, Mum, I’m alright!”
“Wait is that your mother?!” Kili and Fili said together.
“Did you find your dwarves?”
“I’m going to regret this-” Bilbo sighed, then he pitched his voice back up high. “I fell but I’m alright, I just didn’t realize how far down I was!” He paused for a moment, then shouted back. “Do we still have the apple picking ladders?”
“I’m sure we can dig one up-” there was his father. Poor Bungo was probably tearing his hair out. “-are you hurt?”
“No, he’s not, he said he’s alright-” his mother’s voice was muffled. “-we’ll go check, darling, stay out of trouble!”
“Can you throw down some cheese?” Bofur shouted.
“Bofur!”
“Oh some apples would be lovely.” Dori sighed.
“And some apples!” Bofur yelled a bit louder.
“Just send down his whole larder!” Kili yelled. “And a boat! I need the hole to be big enough for a boat!”
In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit. This hole was comfortable, and warm, and cozy. It was also full of Bilbo Baggins’ things. This hobbit had lived a remarkable life and thus his home was quite remarkable in many ways, but the most intriguing bit about this hole was the larger hole in the backyard. It was surrounded by stones, with a lovely set of carved steps going up to the house. It led to a sturdy but worn wooden ladder that had been used for apple picking but now served to connect the Halls of Mahal to Gardens of Yavanna. This ladder fell in the center of a massive stone hall, which was filled with flowers that hobbits would come down to tend to. The two races regularly wandered through Bilbo Baggins’ garden to meet - dwarves would come up for market day bearing gifts and coins, eyeing steaming bread and crisp red apples, while some of the more adventurous hobbits would slide down the ladder to inquire about repairs for their tools.
For Bilbo, though, this hole meant so much more. It meant thirteen dwarves crashing into his house ridiculously early in the morning to nag him into making them breakfast. It meant having his family, blood and not, over for dinner. It meant listening to his mother talk with Dori and Balin about tea, to his father engage Fili and Ori into long tales of age-old tales. It eventually meant Kili tugging a tall, red-haired elf into Bag End no. 2, covered in water while a tired Fili collapsing into a chair complaining that Kili and Tauriel hadn’t stopped making doe-eyes at each other.
It meant that, after a long conversation with tears and laughter and shy touches, Bilbo made dinner with a dwarf that made him laugh as he stole pie filling and got flour on his nose and in his beard. It meant that Bilbo would come back to market to find someone frowning on his porch with little metal bits twisted in his lap as he worked on making ornaments for Bilbo’s garden. It meant that Bilbo Baggins woke up next to Thorin Oakenshield, one hand tangled in that beautiful dark hair. It meant that they sat on the bench under the oak tree and blew smoke rings into the setting sun, holding hands.
When Frodo Baggins finally entered Yavanna’s Gardens, he found his uncle beaming like he hadn’t in years, with a braid in his curls and a ring on his finger. There were thirteen dwarves in the living room, and Frodo was just in time for tea.
