Hey, so I graduated this past May and since then I've just been working 40 hours a week. I feel like I need to go to college to do something with my life but I feel like theres so much in my way and I havent done anything to even start and I dont have a clue what I'd want to do. I'm so unsure on how to do anything regarding financial aid or even applying to colleges. I'm also worried that it wouldn't work with my schedule for my job. I work 5 days with 2 off days and I'm on evenings so I feel like I wouldn't be able to balance work and school, but I would have to bc I'm my only financial support. Sorry for the dumping my problems, but any advice?
How To Do College 101
Congratulations on your graduation! Working a full-time job after graduation (during a freaking pandemic, no less) is no small feat either, and I applaud you for that, too. Once upon a time, I was like you: I didn’t know anything about college except that I wanted to go, and now I run a blog telling people how to go to college. College might be strange and unfamiliar now, but in time, you will learn how to do it!
This might be my longest post, so strap in for a fun ride!! My answer comes to you in three parts:
How To Do Community College
How To Do University
How To Do Financial Aid
P.S. I’m going to say this only once, but feel free to ask why: Do not attend a for-profit college. Okay, now onto the basics!
How To Do Community College
I encourage you to read my Ode to Community College. Community colleges are real colleges designed for people who are low on funds, are working or have other responsibilities, don’t know what they want to study yet, and/or don’t know how college works yet.
Step 1: Applying
Community colleges accept anyone who applies, and the application is usually just like filling out a job application, but you will also need to send in your high school transcript, and I recommend sending any test scores. Your college may have you take a placement test to see if you’re ready for college. If you’re not quite ready, they may have you take some pre-college courses in English or math before you officially start a degree program.
Step 2: Choosing a Degree Program
Among other things, community colleges award associate’s degrees, which are essentially the first two years of a bachelor’s degree at a four-year college or university. You’ll take introductory classes like English, math, science, and social sciences, as well as electives (i.e. fun classes). Here’s a list of programs that might be offered at your community college.
Step 3: Taking the Right Classes
Make sure you stick to your college’s degree plan so that you take classes that 1) count toward your associate’s degree and 2) will transfer to a university. Most classes you take for an associate’s degree (AA, AS, or AFA) should transfer to a bachelor’s degree (BA, BS, or BFA) easily enough, but sometimes universities aren’t very transfer-friendly. The best option is to transfer to a university that has a partnership with your community college, which is information you should be able to find on your community college’s website. If your community college doesn’t have any partners, you’ll want to research the transfer policies at the universities you’re interested in and follow their guidelines on what classes to take.
Step 4: Transferring
In your last year of community college, you will apply to a four-year college or university for your bachelor’s degree. You’ll need to pick a major when you apply because for the next two years, that’s what you will be studying. Make sure you tour the university before you attend and get acclimated before your first day!
How To Do University
Whether or not you attend community college for the first two years or enroll directly into a four-year college or university, you’ll want to understand how to navigate the basics as early as possible.
Step 1: Exploring Your Options
Use my Self-Reflection Toolkit and this quiz from Marquette University to explore potential majors. These are just meant to get you thinking and guide you as you learn more about yourself and your interests. This process will take time to research and figure out, and if you enroll directly into a four-year college you can change your major after you apply. As I mentioned, the first two years are mostly basics and figuring stuff out, so either way you have time.
I was very bad at choosing colleges to apply to and applied almost at random. I learned a lot from those mistakes, and on my FAQ page you’ll see me trying to impart that wisdom on others. I recommend doing your research, going on virtual tours, and getting used to just looking at college websites, even if you don’t know what you want yet. Start by window shopping for colleges in your state and see what they have to offer you. College Board also has tools for finding a college that fits your needs. It’s worth starting as early as possible, and I know that you can do it. Like I said, I was really bad at it and I still made it through.
Step 2: Applying
Applying to a four-year college will take more steps than a community college application. Many colleges require letters of recommendation, essays, and application fees (look on their websites for fee waivers). More information is on my FAQ page, of course, but be prepared to complete these steps before application deadlines. Each college sets its own deadline, but if you want to go next year, you’ll likely need to apply by January or February. Applying can be daunting, but you will need to do it at some point, even if you go to community college first.
Step 3: Finding Resources
Access any and all resources your university offers, which will include advising, counseling, career services, and more. The same is true at a community college, but I would argue it’s even more true at a university. You might find out about internships, research opportunities, fun events, and all that stuff that excited you when you saw it on your university’s website! Even if you don’t feel like you need resources, you’re paying for them, so you might as well use them! Often people won’t know how to help you unless you tell them you’re struggling, like how you told me what you’re going through and I wrote a post that’s turning into a short novel! (I’ll be done soon, I promise.)
Step 4: Taking The Right Classes
Just like at a community college, you want to make sure you’re taking classes that count toward your degree and interest you. Make sure you’re following the prescribed degree plan on your university’s website and communicated by your advisor. If you find that you’ve chosen a major that doesn’t fit your interests, make sure you speak with your professors, your advisor, and anyone else whose opinion you trust.
How To Do Financial Aid
Step 1: Understanding The Basics
There are three major types of financial aid: loans (money you have to pay back after you graduate), grants (government money you’re awarded based on your financial need that you don’t have to pay back), and scholarships (money from a college or other source that is awarded for any reason that you don’t have to pay back). Loans might come from the government, your college, or a bank. I recommend borrowing from the federal government because the interest is so low (basically, it’s cheaper to pay off than a bank loan).
Step 2: Filling Out FAFSA
If you want to go to college next fall, or if you just want to do a practice round, fill out FAFSA now. I’m assuming you’re under 24, so you will need your parents’ tax information even if they’re not going to help you pay for college. Filling out FAFSA will never, not ever ever ever require you or your parents to take out any loans. Rather, FAFSA gives you access to any need-based financial aid you might be eligible for, whether that aid comes from the government or not. Loans agreements are a totally separate form, and you can take some loans without your parents’ help. If you’re not eligible for FAFSA, check whether your state or college has its own FAFSA alternative.
Step 3: Reading Your Award Letter
After a college sends an acceptance letter, they will also send a financial aid award letter. The letter will show you how much you’ve been awarded in scholarships and grants and how much you can take out in loans from the federal government or the college itself. You should compare your financial aid amount to the total cost of attendance, will you can find on the college’s financial aid webpage. The total cost of attendance is how much it costs to pay for tuition, fees, housing, and a rough estimate of your other living expenses. Basically, it’s how much it costs to be a student for one year.
As you said, I wouldn’t expect you to be able to work 40 hours while maintaining good grades, so may need to be frugal and creative to fill in any gaps financial aid didn’t cover. Private colleges tend to have a really big “sticker price,” but may offer generous scholarships as discounts, whereas public colleges tend to be cheaper and may have (large and small) scholarships to help you pay.
Step 4: Applying
In addition to the scholarships that you may be automatically awarded if you meet certain criteria, your colleges may also have scholarships that you have to apply for by yourself. This information will be located on a college’s financial aid webpage. There are also scholarships from nonprofit organizations and businesses. Visit my resources page for info, ask people you know if they’re aware of any scholarships, ask your boss and coworkers, and ask Google for “scholarships in [your town].”
Okay, I threw a lot at you, but those are the basics as I see them! You can totally do this. It’s going to be a big learning curve, but the payoffs will be big. And you can always come back here for more advice and reassurance. I’m proud of you already for thinking of your future and doing what you can to support yourself and your learning.

SimCity BuildIt Guide
SimCity BuildIt guide turned into lately launched. I examined it on an ipad seasoned 10.five and an ipad air 2, each running a one-of-a-kind metropolis. (there would not appear to be any top manner to run multiple city on one tool.) I first set up SimCity BuildIt at the ipad pro—that sport is now on stage 35—after which installed the app on my ipad air, curious to see if the game would be as stable on it. It is, and i am up to degree 17. the most effective distinction i have observed in strolling the app on the 2 machines is which you get a extra zoomed-in default view on the air due to the distinction in decision. Add landscape functions - from ponds and lakes to forests, you could add inexperienced regions in your city except just widespread parks. Panorama capabilities do not require adjacent roads the manner parks do. Construct leisure facilities - these are specialized homes which include inns, amphitheaters and expo facilities. The enjoyment hq is required, that is available at stage 20 or better. Construct playing centers - a playing hq is needed at stage 25 or higher. This lets in you to build a gambling residence, on line casino and other gambling related buildings. The way to earn rewards inside the season with the mayor's subscription? Performing duties of the opposition of mayors and incomes plumbob points for this, you will open new prize classes of the season and obtain their corresponding awards. On the season display screen you'll see the time till its quit and your development. At the start of each new season, your factors counter will be reset. Do i want to defeat other players inside the opposition of mayors a good way to earn subscription rewards? On the cease of production, the icons of your merchandise will seem on the economic constructing. Click on them to choose up the products. Within the equal way, they may be picked up without delay from the production cellular. In case your metropolis warehouse is full and also you can't select up the goods produced, it will stay in the commercial constructing, but you will now not be able to produce new items until you empty its production cells! Produce items and supply goods to earn Simoleons, promote items from a warehouse, check what's up on the market in international change, and additionally conclude (or reject) transactions for Simoleons with other characters for your metropolis. You can buckle and pay. Actually, some people find this a laugh. And some human beings—yeah, me—simply assume: "hmmm. Maybe i should go lower back and attempt that pc model again. It had its issues, however it wasn't something quite like this." To contact the writer of this post, write to [email protected] or discover him on twitter @stephentotilo. The purpose of the sport is simple...increase your very own city, keep your sims glad, increase your assets & alternate. Now here is the thrilling element...when they say build it they don't absolutely mean build it. This game is amusing to play, but the handiest problem its hard to get cash, its time eating and as weeks months bypass by using, u'll get uninterested in grinding. The homes & other things you want to construct takes loads of money, its so frustrating every so often due to the fact all you want to do is be creative with your metropolis but you cant due to the fact theres restrict to it!! So i hope this generator genuinely works!!!! Btw, i virtually love sim city as it enables me to experience my entertainment time!! Go to settings> help> touch us to fill out an application. Suggest a legitimate electronic mail deal with when sending, and they'll touch you as quickly as possible. Editor's note: submit up to date 7/7/17. The subsequent review is on SimCity BuildIt for android, version 1.17. you may click any screen shot to view a larger version. As soon as a gamer, usually a gamer, and whilst i may not play as many video games as i did in my teenagers and twenties, i do nonetheless experience the escape a very good game affords. Gamers can join and compete with different users for more linked gameplay. [2] the sport is freemium (unfastened-to-play with intrusive commercials and in-app purchases). It utilizes track and pix just like the 2013 simcity sport, although it is barely down scaled so one can healthy in with the ios and android devices' graphic abilties. The game begins with 25,000 Simoleons and 50 simcash reachable. There is no zoning characteristic in simcity: buildit. As a substitute, homes are moved manually. Industrial and commercial homes produce gadgets, and home zones require them on the way to upgrade to a better density. Within the city, you may building up to 6 omega laboratories. At the omega research middle, omega merchandise are made from omega material. It's far to be had in the government - offerings menu. Click on the omega research middle and deliver the omega fabric there to start processing. While the products are equipped, click on at the containers to collect them. Wherein am i able to shop omega products? Search for an omega warehouse in the offerings menu - energy. In case you need extra area, click on on boom warehouse to see what you want for this. I tested it on an ipad seasoned 10.5 and an ipad air 2, each running a exclusive city. (there doesn't appear to be any true manner to run multiple metropolis on one device.) I first mounted SimCity BuildIt at the ipad seasoned—that sport is now on level 35—and then mounted the app on my ipad air, curious to see if the sport could be as stable on it. It's miles, and i am up to stage 17. the simplest distinction i have observed in walking the app on the two machines is which you get a more zoomed-in default view on the air because of the distinction in resolution. There is not simply a storyline that you're following in buildit, however this recreation is truly greater task-oriented than the laptop model ever changed into. I'll get extra into element approximately the SimCity BuildIt financial system, however for example, the best manner to enlarge the land of your town is to purchase land tracts (rectangles of land) to permit extra time to construct. Nicely, the only manner to buy those tracts is to shop for or locate bulldozer parts. If you can not locate or have enough money the elements, you can not develop the land place of your city. You could handiest view a maximum of 20 items at a time and you cannot select what you spot. The listings seem to be completely random. Any item may be offered in gthq, including the specialized items such as vu's tower, beach, mountain and bulldozer items. Because of the limits on the gthq, it's very rare that you'll actually be able to find what you're looking for, especially if it's one of the more rare items in the game. Rather than the current market, i would suggest an auction system where you can bid on items and have more control on pricing. (there are additional items for expansion to the beach and mountainside.) To increase your territory or your city's storage capacity, you need to get a certain number of each of a set of three parts. For example, to expand into a certain 6-by-8 lot, you might need five dozer wheels, five dozer blades, and five dozer exhaust pipes. For a different lot, you might need seven of each item. To acquire these parts, you can buy them in the global trade hq (be advised that they sell quickly), or on rare occasions receive them as gifts when you travel to another city to buy something else, and click on a gift icon. If red exclamation marks appear on the icons on the right of the screen, find out immediately what is happening! These icons will tell you what can be improved to make your citizens happy. You can also visually assess the level of happiness of each individual district by selecting the government icon in the city services menu. What is city services? Your citizens have needs! As a mayor, you must consider eight key points that make up the well-being of your citizens. These goods are consumed at such a rate that they do not reach the warehouse. The increase in the city warehouse. Go to the city warehouse and click on the green button "increase warehouse" to see what special items for storage space are required to increase its capacity. Collect the necessary goods, click on the screen to confirm, and the size of your city warehouse will increase instantly. If you do not want to view icons with the opinions of your fellow citizens, you can purchase missing special items for simcash. In some cases, you can even permanently lose your city. How to download a city to a new device? Complete the training mode until the city councilor tells you that you will play next yourself. Click on the "settings" icon and log in to the appropriate account. Do not see the authorization buttons? So, you have not completed the training mode in the game. Why didn't my saved city load? Have you saved the original city? If you did not save it using the in-game settings, you will not be able to access it from any device. These videos only work while you're online. Also, sometimes if i didn't notice the movie icon quickly enough, the video would expire and nothing would happen when i clicked on the icon. Several times, i would listen to my advisor and watch the ad, but the advisor would not reappear to let me pick my reward. When that happens, i find it's best not to click on the movie icon for a while, because if it happens once, it's likely to keep happening. Athough maxis could have designed SimCity BuildIt's commerce function for single-player use, making transactions with real players and visiting their cities adds greatly to the richness of the game. The downside is that i really miss the ability to trade when i'm offline. One online feature that lets you directly interact with other players is the mayors' club, which unlocks at level 18. You can join a mayors' club, which is a group of up to 25 players who can chat or make deals with each other. As mayor, you lay down the roads, place houses, stores, and factories, collect taxes, and arrange deals with other cities. You must also provide services for your citizens, the sims, when the options become available—power, water, sewage treatment, sanitation, and education. If you neglect expanding services and the overall city upkeep, your sims move out, you lose tax revenue, and the city stagnates. First, though, they can and will talk back to you (with their words appearing in an opinion bubble above a house or other property), tell you what's working and what isn't, although their responses are admittedly canned. Some updates and upgrades may change the way we record usage data and metrics, or change data stored on your device. Any changes will always be consistent with ea's privacy and cookie policy. You can withdraw your consent at any time by removing or disabling this app, visiting help.ea.com for assistance, or by contacting us at attn: privacy / mobile consent withdrawal, electronic arts inc., 209 redwood shores pkwy, redwood city, ca, usa. Ships of battle - age of pirates - warship battle 2.6.28 apk + mod (unlimited money, free shopping) + data for android gangstar vegas: world of crime 4.4.0m apk + mod (money/vip gold/diamonds/anti ban) + data for android note - make sure that you disable your internet connection while playing this game. However, i think a better idea is to know exactly what you're looking for and to play to the requirements, not to stock. If you have a bunch of residences that are looking for a certain material, go crazy on stockpiling those as at least you know you'll be able to quickly in and spend those on actual upgrades once they are ready to go. Once you unlock the trade hq, i recommend using it to sell your excess rare parts (i.e. It'd been 10 years since its last outing - simcity 4, which retained the classic blocky approach to city building. However, the reboot overhauled the game entirely, as it surely had to -  it received a brand new game engine, a fully 3d experience and an online home, where players could trade with others in close proximity. The problem is - this was the only choice: there wasn't an offline mode. Cue server issues, downtime and many more problems, and what was left was a disastrous relaunch for a much beloved franchise. When traffic congestion begins to roll over, the adviser will notify you of this, and a red exclamation mark will appear next to the road icon. Modernization of roads. Click on the upgrade icon with helmet and traffic light. You will see a view of the city with a highlighted road network. Green / black roads = good. Red roads = bad! The yellow light in this view indicates average traffic congestion. In the event of a sharp increase in population in this area, residents will complain! My biggest complaint has to do with the game's decision to limit some of the cooler buildings to premium currency buys (and at amounts that you'll never earn in-game). Meanwhile, buildit's strongest facet is its graphics. Simply put, i absolutely love the visuals in SimCity BuildIt. Players have full rotational control of their town and all the structures are highly detailed and simply look great. Your city is also teeming with life — zoom in and you'll see cars on the street, stoplights, and even traffic jams when that becomes a problem for your city. But as often as not, the deals are for your storage and expansion parts. Money generated from these deals come at the expense of your city's growth, so think long and hard about giving these parts up. You're the mayor, and have the final word. Tapping the global trade hq, which i always think of as the world trade center, shows items that other sims have put up for sale. Touching the building brings up a list of offers, which you can refresh every 30 seconds. You can make the road upgrade smaller by running another road into it, this will help you save significant amount of coins. As a rule of thumb, you should request for new upgrading plan, whenever the upgrade request asking for 2~3+ items that you do not have. Always go forward with the upgrading plans that require materials only from the factory. At mid point in game with upgraded factories, you will find yourself loaded with the basic materials. 2. Slow down on building the stores, refresh the upgrades, and only upgrade if you do have the materials that can be made from your existing buildings. Your futuristic city adviser will tell you what products your neighbor wants to buy. Click yes !, to accept the offer or no, thanks !, to refuse the sale. There are ten different omega products. Based on the results of using the omega research center, you receive a random omega product. How to unlock a futuristic city? Click on the neomall site between the wu tower and the mountains. If you meet the requirements for access to futuristic cities, an adviser will appear on the screen, which will guide you into the future. If you change your mind and want to remove the lot from the shelf of the warehouse, click on the red button (but think carefully - it will cost you simcash, and the goods will be lost!). If you have run out of empty boxes at the warehouse, but you want to put up for sale other goods right now, you can purchase additional boxes for simcash. Click on the box with the yellow sticker in the lower right corner of the warehouse. Now you will send your main facebook account (that you have connected SimCity BuildIt to) a friend request that you accept. Now you're able to start SimCity BuildIt with that facebook account and you will see your main city in the friends list. If you want to build your feeder city right there are some things that you will need to mind, otherwise it might get less effective. This takes a little time, i'd say some hours but you can simply do it on breaks and don't need to do it all straight. Whenever you overbuilt, you run a chance of losing a building completely, and it can happen to your biggest building, so do not risk it! If you have to choose between placing your services, pick the area where you have the most dense population. This means if you only have enough money for a fire station or police station, you better make sure those cover your tallest buildings. Your tallest buildings will have the most impact on your city in terms of happiness and money. Because it works at the first time after you install it, but if you want to play it free forever then you must turn off any internet ln your phone forever even after you close the game because the game is still running at the background and it will sync with ea server at the background while you turning on the internet and the server will detect that it's illegal and will notify you that data is corrupt, that means your app is blacklisted already so if you don't mind with internet forever, this mod is for you, but if you still want to use internet after playing, don't download it or you will regret it losing all your record because it is already blacklisted note - make sure that you disable your internet connection while playing this game. What are these deals that constantly offer my city? This is just a convenient way to earn Simoleons and free up some storage space. Click on the icon for the image of speech in which the simoleon is drawn as soon as it appears in your city. To close the deal, click "yes!" And the Simoleons will appear on your account. To opt out, click "no, thanks." No one will be offended, and soon new offers will appear. If at the moment you do not have a product, but you would like the transaction to take place (perhaps these products will appear soon), click on the screen outside the transaction window and then it will be saved on your card.

Greetings, comrade LJ! I am about to start college in a month and I was wondering if you could bless me with some wisdom on how to survive my first semester! (Feel free to publish this tbh some other youngins might need the help too)
oh my god i am SO sorry i just saw this, tungle literally never told me i recieved this what the hell!!! i will happily give you some wisdom even if youve already started college oh man im sorry. hopefully this still helps!!! for reference im a biology major so some of this might not apply well to other majors lol
ok my first wisdom is to never get books unless you have to. these days, professors know most students dont actually use books so they dont bother really using the books for the tests...the exception is for labs (science labs, at least) where you typically will need to buy the lab guide to do hw and stuff. generally if you think you might need a book, wait a bit before getting it - even if the professor says you ABSOLUTELY need it. sometimes they just have to say that but you wont really need it. if you can, rent, and rent used! books are generally a waste, the way they get your money nowadays is HW access codes. yes....paying to do HW. how great
ratemyprofessor is a fantastic resource, but do be wary of certain reviews - students can be salty about failing a class and give a bad review for a professor who doesnt deserve it. also, make sure you're looking at the correct class (upper left corner of the review) for the professor
if you can, make friends in a class and work together on stuff (hw, quizzes), and then you can share notes if one of you misses class and stuff
in terms of missing class, id say its up to your judgment if you skip or not - it honestly depends on the class. some classes i barely went to, some i never missed. freshman year i barely skipped class (probably a good idea as you get the feel of it) but once you go on, you'll be able to tell if you need to go to class (generally if the professor just teaches from ppts and doesn't require attendance, you might be able to miss. depends on how you learn tho!)
labs you generally cant miss (again, science labs) or youll like get set on fire or something. its bad. you can usually make it up with an excuse or if you know ahead of time, tho
be friends with your professors and TAs! go to office hours! especially if you're planning or grad/professional school and want rec letters. altho!! dont stress abt future plans too much. you really, really have time. theres no rush to go to school after undergrad at all so if you dont have your shit together. DONT WORRY
this has probably become irrelevant for you but id suggest leaving waaaay early for your first day of class so you can find your classroom ok and get a good seat
free stuff is lit. get free stuff whenever you can. if you find a pen somewhere? take it its yours now
if you do well in a class and enjoy it, id suggest trying to become a tutor for it. you probably make some money, its not usually too much work, and you enjoy it if thats the kind of thing you're into. its especially helpful if youre planning on going into something relating to that subject someday, so then you can keep up to date on it
getting involved is also a good idea!! theres so many clubs and stuff at universities, so theres usually something for everyone. it can be scary going alone, but youll usually end up meeting people there. theres typically not too much pressure to keep coming consistently, so if you need time off from a club you can take it easily.
libraries can be a great place to study dont knock em i sure did until like last year which was a mistake. imo focusing is easier in a library than in my room, that might just be me tho!!
cliques arent really a ‘thing,’ you might end up with a friend group or two but college is not nearly as cliquey as HS. i have a lot of friends now who i KNOW i wouldnt have even talked to in HS just based on the fact that we wouldve run in different social circles back then. dont limit yourself by thinking ‘oh, we’re too different’ or something, you’d be surprised how well you click with people you didnt think youd get along with!
cafeteria food,,...is usually bad. it tends to be a lot better when theres tours going on, so try to remember that lol
this is already so long im sorry lol, ill stop here but let me know if you (or anyone else reading this) have any questions or want any specific advice!! im a senior in college now so im basically an expert lol (though my knowledge is limited by certain things like being a STEM major, living on campus without a car, living away from home, etc) but i love talking about stuff like this!!!! i wish you the best of luck in college and again im really sorry i didnt see this until like 2 months after you sent it, i hope college is going well for you!!! and for everyone else who started recently!!! also ill tag you to make sure you see this, i cant remember if it alerts you lol @rated-r-for-grantaire

today was not the most productive day. i was zoning out a lot. but also it was cold in the morning. its been a while since i did work in bed in the am. I usually do work at my desk. work is going to be super busy this week. a bunch of people asked me for stuff, and then im also training a new analyst. thats pretty fun, i havent trained anyone in a while. its a good experience. you always have in your mind how long it takes to teach someone something, but you forget that theres questions and tangents and things take much longer. So I need to recalibrate. I made a whole training guide doc with quick links and resources of getting started on week 1 and then a schedule of things to go over. i really like making plans.
anyway for the bingo challenge. today i watched everyone’s show and everyone’s youtube video.
im on a call with cathy right now bc we were watching some of the shows together. she’s literally reading previous journals right now. and im also watching karen’s live stream. it’s hard for me to think of things to write when im talking to someone and listening to another person so i might end this article a tad shorter.
oh i had an intro meeting with someone from an adjacent team. she just started a month ago but she went to saratoga high. small world. she lives in sf now but she was mentioning how she used to go home every other weekend but since its AP test season her parents dont want her home as much so that her younger brother can focus on studying haha. when i mentioned i went to monta vista she was like “wow i respect you so much” lmao.

Changing the Tide: An Avengers Fanfic (6/7)
Summary: Wanda Maximoff is the new girl in town and also reconciling with the death of her twin brother, Pietro. As she starts to navigate her new life she manages to stumble into friendship with a group of teens who are surprisingly similar to her
A/N: This is basically just a highschoolAU for the Avengers without powers.
(Part 1) (Part 2) (Part 3) (Part 4) (Part 5) (Part 6) (Part 7)
After Physics, Wanda walked with Clint to his locker.
As Clint stuffed books and notebooks into his locker with rather excessive amount of force he glanced over at Wanda, “Do you need to stop at your locker?” he asked, trying to make small talk.
“Yeah, just need to grab some homework real quick.” Wanda replied leaning against the locker next to his, “Do you need help?” She asked, watch him struggle to get his homework into his backpack.
“No. I’m fine,” Clint replied as he finally pushed his last textbook in with as much effort as he could seemingly muster.
Once they’d also stopped at Wanda’s locker they walked to Clint’s car, where Natasha was waiting.
“Took you long enough,” Natasha said as they all hopped in, “I thought I was going to have to send out a search party.”
“Stop being so melodramatic,” Clint retorted, rolling his eyes as he pulled out of the parking lot. When Clint pulled up to his house Wanda was surprised...it say the least. Clint’s house was a massive old farmhouse just on the outskirts of town.
“Your house is amazing,” She blurted out before she could think better of it.
“Thanks,” Clint said with a smile, “We can give you a tour, I think it’ll be awhile before other people show up.”
After Wanda’s tour of Clint’s house (with him being overzealous like a museum tour guide as Natasha followed behind rolling her eyes) the trio ended up back in the kitchen where Wanda took a seat at the island while Natasha and Clint busied themselves with preparing snacks.
“We tend to spend some time prepping for these things before everyone gets here, for some reason every single one of our friends have a massive appetite.” Clint explained to Wanda as he starts pulling bags of chips out of cupboards.
Then the doorbell rings, “I’ll get it,” Wanda said as she scrambled out of her chair and towards the front door. When she opened it she was greeted by the grinning faces of Steve, and an African-American guy that Wanda didn’t recognize.
“Hey,” Steve said, greeting Wanda, “This is Sam Wilson,” he says, introducing her to the other guy.
“Hi, nice to meet you,” Sam says with a smile.
“Well, come on in,” Wanda replied, opening the door wide enough.
“Are we the first ones here?” Steve asks as you walk into the kitchen again.
Clint nods, “Yeah, you know how everyone else is, you’re the only ones who seem to understand what it is to be punctual.”
As they guys get to talking - something about sports so you kind of zone out - Natasha pulls you aside.
“This is usually when I go into the other room and bang out my homework really quick,” She explains as she grabs your backpacks off the table and leads you into what you remember is Clint’s bedroom.
“Isn’t that why everyone hangs out? To do homework together?” Wanda asks.
“Hypothetically, but everyone’s so distracting that it’s really not going allow anyone to get work done.” Natasha tells you as she starts pulling notebooks and textbooks out of her backpack, “Don’t worry, I’m usually done before everyone else gets here so we’ll still have plenty of time to hang out with everyone.”
“That’s actually a brilliant way to do it.” Wanda says as she pulls out her own work and gets started.
As Wanda is wrapping up the last of her physics work she looks up to see that Natasha is almost done too.
“Alright, now we can rejoin the barbarians.” She announces as she shoves her books back into her bag and stands up, stretching her back slightly, “You ready?”
“I guess,” Wanda mutters in response.
“Stop being mopey, c'mon,” Tasha replies, grabbing Wanda’s hand and pulling her out of Clint’s room and back into the kitchen where a majority of the group has finally showed up.
“Alrighty weirdos, most of you have already met Wanda briefly but some of you haven’t, so we’re going to play some amazing get to know you games so that she gets to know all of us and we get to know her.”
“Oh, that’s okay we don’t have to do-” Wanda started before getting cut off.
“So everyone sit down.”
There was a scuffle as everyone sat down around Clint’s massive dining room table, chairs scraping against the floor.
“I’m mostly doing this because I’m nosy, I’m just using you as an excuse,” Natasha whispers to you as she sits down in the chair next to you before turning back to the rest of the group, “Now, obviously everyone isn’t here, but there are a lot of us, so go around and say your name, grade, and your favorite thing to do in your free time.”
Everyone nods, albeit a bit unsure of why this is something fun, “I’ll start,” She adds, “I’m Natasha, I’m a Junior, and my favorite thing to do in my free time is acrobatics at the circus school I take classes at.”
“Alright, I guess I’m next,” Clint says as he pulls one of his legs up to his chest in the chair he’s sitting in, “I’m Clint, I’m a Junior, and it’s kind of lame, but I like archery.”
“I’m Steve, I’m the grandpa of the group I guess, since I’m a Senior, and my favorite thing to do is sketch.”
“Sam, I’m a Junior, and I fly planes.”
“I’m the one and only Tony Stark, I’m a senior, and I invent stuff.”
“Is it my turn?” Bruce asks, “I’m Bruce, I’m a Junior, and honestly, I mostly just do physics homework.”
“Lame!”
“Me?” A nervous looking kid asks when Bruce prods him with his elbow, “I’m, uh, Peter, and I’m a Freshman, and kind of the same thing as Tony, I mostly just build stuff and hang out.”
“Wanda?” Clint prompts, looking over at her.
Wanda nods at him before looking around at the rest of the group, “I’m Wanda, I’m a Sophomore, and I guess...I play guitar a lot?”
Natasha gives Wanda a reassuring smile before turning back to the group, “Thank you so much guys, now let’s try something a bit more interesting, how about never have I ever?”
There’s a chorus of oohs as everyone looks around, causing Wanda to guess the game is a bit infamous with this group of friends.
“Remember when Darcy admitted she’d checked out the butts of everyone there?” Tony recollects with a smirk.
“Let’s go the opposite way this time, so Wanda, you start.” Natasha says, “And everyone put up your five fingers.”
Wanda nods as she holds up her hand before thinking for a moment, “Never have I ever...gone skinny dipping.”
Wanda watched as Natasha, Clint, Sam, and Tony all put down a finger and Tony protested, “That’s not fair, it’s a high school cliche, you have to do it!”
“Peter?”
“Never have I ever smoked in the school bathroom.”
Clint and Tony put down another finger as they both shoot Peter a dirty look, “How dare you,” Clint mutters, “We had an agreement when we made you our look out.”
“You never said I couldn’t use it against you in a game of never have I ever,” Peter points out with a grin.
“Alright, alright, Bruce?”
“Um...Never have I ever had a fake ID.”
Natasha, Tony, and surprisingly, Steve, all put down a finger.
“Steve?”
“I wanted to vote.”
“Alright,” Tony said, trying to talk over the burst of laughter from the group, “Never have I ever studied for a test.”
“That’s so lame, Tony.” Natasha mutters as the rest of you put down a finger.
“Never have I ever blacked out from drinking.” Sam says.
Wanda put down one of her fingers and so did Tony, but they were the only two.
“Wait, hold up,” Clint says, throwing up his hands, “It makes sense that Tony would get blackout drunk, hell! He probably does every weekend, but when did you?” He asks, looking over at Wanda curiously.
“After Pietro.” Wanda replies quietly as she looks down at her lap. Natasha rubs her back comfortingly as Peter looks across the table at Tony and silently asks him what’s they’re talking about. Tony mouths back ‘I’ll explain later’
“Should I go?” Steve asks, looking over at Wanda and Natasha, Wanda nods and give him a slightly reassuring nod, “Okay, never have I ever had a crush on a teacher.” He says with a grin before glancing at Sam and trying not to laugh.
“I feel like this game is just an excuse to expose things that people have said in strict confidence.” Sam says as he puts down one of his fingers and pouts.
Wanda, Bruce and Peter also put down a finger.
“Who?” Natasha asks, trying to not look two discussed by the idea of her friends being into their adult teachers.
“Ms. Cho. I was in love with her last year.” Sam replies.
“Freshman year I had crush on Ms. Hill.” Bruce admits.
“I had a crush on Ms. Friday, the french teacher.” Peter says.
“My philosophy teacher is cute.” Wanda offers.
“Mr. Jarvis? You have a crush on Mr. Jarvis?” Tony says, straighting up as he looks across the table at her.
“I should not have said that.” Wanda mutters, immediately realizing her mistake.
“You really shouldn’t have.” Tony replies.
“Anyway, Clint, it’s your turn.” Natasha says, cutting Tony’s teasing off.
“Never have I ever kissed my best friend.” Clint replies with a grin.
“You mean you’ve never kissed Nat? Aren’t you dating?”
“No...ew.”
Wanda, Steve, Tony and Bruce put down a finger.
“My life is just so exciting compared everyone else’s, this isn’t fair.” Tony complains when he realizes that he’s out of fingers.
“Cmon Tony, don’t be a sore loser about this,” Steve says with a chuckle as he stands up and walks over to Tony and pats him on the back, “But I better head out, does anyone need a ride home?” He asks as he scans the room. Everyone else declines the offer leaving Steve’s glance lingering on Wanda.
“That’s okay, I can walk home,” Wanda says with a dismissive wave of her hand.
“Wanda, do you even know how to get home from here?” Clint asks.
“Um… I could figure it out,” Wanda says, “Really! I’m fine.”
“Just let me drive you home,” Steve says, “I’m trying to be polite.”
“I-oh, alright,” Wanda mutters as she stands up and grabs her backpack off the floor.
“See, that wasn’t so bad, now was it?” Steve says with a grin.
You, Steve, and Sam all say a chorus of goodbyes to the rest of the group before heading out. “Shotgun!” Sam shouts as he races out of Clint’s front door. Steve just rolls his eyes and Wanda tries not to giggle as Sam sprints down to the passenger seat door of Steve’s car.
“So, how are you liking it here?” Steve asks as he glances into the rearview mirror at Wanda.
“It’s alright, I appreciate that you guys have all taken me in, it really means a lot.”
“Of course, you’re a great kid, why wouldn’t we want to have you join our group?”
“Green light,” Sam mutters, “God, can you please stop driving like a grandpa? I have to get home for dinner.”
“It’s called safety, maybe you should look it up.” Steve shoots back, “Honestly, I’m surprised you want to hang out with us.”
“What? You guys are super popular, doesn’t everyone want to hang out with you?”
“I don’t know if we’re popular, we’ve just got enough scary football players and freaky genius kids that no one wants to cross us.”
“But aren’t football players, partiers, and rich kids the groups that are usually are popular? Aren’t those the three groups that make up your friends group?”
“I don’t know man, but you’ve met everyone, they’re not exactly cool, I’m the only cool one.” Sam interjects.
Steve pulls up in front of a small house with pale blue siding and a brown door and Sam hops out.
“Thanks man,” He says to Steve before looking in the backseat at Wanda, “See you tomorrow.”
“Alright, you can come sit up here if you want,” Steve says as he turns around to look at Wanda while Sam goes into his house.
“What, you don’t want to pretend to be my chauffeur?” Wanda asks mockingly as she hops out and gets into the front seat.
“Where do you live?” Steve asks.
“On 7th, it’s about 5 blocks down the street from school. 17th Street and Main.” Wanda replies.
“Aye aye, captain,” He replies as he pulls away from the curb, heading in that direction.
“I really did mean what I said earlier, I know I was a bit skeptical about the fact that you guys took me in, but I’m glad that you did, it makes all of this...a lot easier.” Wanda says after a moment.
“I think you’re a good fit for us, sure, you’ve got your baggage, but we all do, it’s nice to have people that you can talk to about that kind of stuff.”
“I don’t know if I’m quite ready to talk about it.” Wanda replies with chuckle.
“You sure? I’m always here if you need someone.”
“Maybe someday.” Wanda replies, staring out the window at the houses as they pass by them.
“Thanks for driving me home,” Wanda says as she turns to Steve.
Steve grins, “Any time. I’ll see you tomorrow at school.”
“See you!” Wanda calls out as she hops out of Steve’s car and start up her family’s front walkway.
As she entered the house she could feel the high of being around her new friends slowly dissipates thrust back into the real world - her reality. The kitchen table was covered in Pietro’s clothes. Wanda watched as her mom painstakingly sorted through it.
“What are you doing?” Wanda asks, quietly, from the doorway.
“It’s time,” Her mother replies as she looks up at her, “Would you like to help me? I think a lot of this stuff can be donated.”
“I can’t-no.” Wanda states before walking away and quickly running up to her bedroom and closing the door behind her. Her mom doesn’t follow her, Wanda knows she won’t, she knows it’s too hard.
Wanda sat on her bed for the rest of the night. She knew she needed to go down stairs and talk to her mom. Or at least join her parents for dinner, but they didn’t push her so she stayed in her room and tried to do homework (which meant just sitting at her desk with all of her books propped open around her while she just stared at the wall).
Eventually Wanda gave up on the potential of ever getting any homework done and just got into bed, where she tossed and turned for the rest of the night, unable to relax herself and drift off.
She fell down a pit of self-loathing as she attempted to sleep for how disrespectful it was to Pietro’s memory for her to have immediately found friends and to spend an afternoon with them where she barely thought about her twin.

Do you have any advice for someone wanting to learn to speak + write Japanese? I took 2 years of Japanese in middle school and don't remember anything except some hiragana and katakana since that was about 10 years ago at.
lemme give u the resources ive been using
app called tandem is key! its basically a pen pal meeting ground. so you’ll enter the languages you know and the languages you’re trying to learn, and you will see the profiles of people who are native speakers of your target languages who are also trying to learn your native language. really cool language exchange stuff. the app itself has a facetime esque function which rules since intl stuff can be annoying, chat features and then a correction feature within that so y’all can keep each other on the up and up. i’ve met some really cool folks through this, including now people i’ve met in person! v good app, you will never get good at a language if you don’t actually practice speaking the language with others
tae kim’s grammar guide is imo the best way i have found to learn grammar. this writer has an amazing way with words and i think he translates the cultural difference really easily and intelligently. i never got japanese grammar when i studied it in school but the way tae kim writes is super accessible.
anki is a kick ass online flashcard tool that uses spaced repetition so you actually can like learn and challenge yourself. the desktop is free but the app is like $20  so unless u have a gift card i would just carve out some time for your desktop. there are forums and premade decks by other users and there are really good grammar and vocabulary decks etc etc at least for the n5/n4 levels
since i just mentioned them, the jlpt worksheets are helpful and those are straight up by the ppl who facilitate the language proficiency test for japanese
on the iphone theres a killer dictionary thats just called japanese where you can save words, look up words by actually writing the kanji down, etc. on desktop jisho.org is p good
carve out an hour every single day. anki can help keep you accountable to that since there will be a buildup of words you have to get through. talk to ppl. find some good shows in japanese and watch with the japanese subtitles or none at all. im sure there are good online sources for listening comprehension. have at it my dude

School and life stuff
First off stop being that bitch. The one who didn't do jackshit and is constantly mooching off others for the work. Dont complain and say you were too busy. If you legitimately have an issue with management try talking to a teacher, an older classmate or the guidance counselor. Solve your problems, in math and life and don't be afraid to ask for help in either. In life and on these apps, sometimes there are problems only you can solve
Study groups do help but make sure you know the difference between copying each other and goofing off and actually helping each other and getting work done. Everyone has different learning and teaching styles and it is important to find out what works best for you when it comes to these groups. Though having people with different methods can help you develop skills that pertain to that style.
Quizlet I didnt know about or utilize quizlet until my sophomore year of highschool and I regret it. While quizlet can provide answers, it also provides a very easy an convenient wayk to study. You can make your own flashcards, take tests and quizzes based off those flashcards, hear them verbally, if they arent too long, write in a different language(good for language learning in vocabulary) and you can play games with the vocab. 10/10 I reccomend, especially for memorization and I think the quizlet plus is super cheap.
Photomath I'm really bad at math like not to a worrying amount but like not that good and sometimes I need help. After a certain point you cant ask your parents for help with schoolwork because they have no idea unless they're a mathematician or a math teacher. Photomath can help give you the answer and then show you how to do it but in terms of helpfulness I give it a 4-5/10 because it's kind of vague and unhelpful and it doesn't show you how your teacher teaches it and they'll likely notice. It has graphing help and settings if you're looking for a specific way to solve the problem. It has limitations and can only solve so much. I do reccomend it's calculator if you dont have a fancy one at home. I mostly reccomend this for checking answers. The name refers to being able to take pictures of math problems and scan and solve them. Make sure your handwriting is neat and readable and make sure the equation is correct when it scans, you can edit it by hand too.
Dezmos is a free online graphing calculator that you can access on your school computer and your phone. Idk much about graphing calculators but I'm sure itll be helpful at some point. 7/10 bc I dont use it
Spanishdict is a super helpful translator for learning spanish. If you're writing something and want to double check that its right. I dont reccomend using on all of your Spanish homework or work because sometimes it uses words from different dialects than the one you're learning, but it is super useful if you just need one word and dont trust google translate. 9/10
Brainly is really helpful for those questions you just dont get and I really reccomend, sometimes it's just answers but other times its solutions and indepth explanations on how you get the answer. The brainly plus is expensive in my opinion but kind of worth it and they have it so you can just forward it to your parents and theres like a video that explains it and if they want to pay for it so you dont feel bad or awkward. I reccomend sharing with a friend of group of friends that can collectively pay for it so it doesn't seem as expensive. The brainly plus has a similar feature to photomath where you can take pictures and scan it and itll look for that question or the answers or you can be the first one to ask, it's kind of like a forum 10/10
Slader has textbook answers for a variety of textbooks but doesnt cater to all of them and for this reason I'm giving it a 7/10 like it's useful for checking answers but it's kind of limited in what it has
Sparknotes are great when you get into highschool and have to read Shakespeare and difficult old british literature. It sums up content by chapters in an easy to read way and has a bunch of other features on their website. I think they have study guides and tests that you can take on chapters. They also have a bunch of memes on their social media. 9/10 I dont reccomend not reading the work and just reading the sparknotes, sometimes they glaze over important information or key details.
youtube is great for math but I havent really looked for anything else. YouTube in general is great for anything you're unsure of or need help with. 10/10 sometimes it explains things that my teacher didnt convey too well.
My favorite youtube channels for school include:
Señor Jordan for spanish, he will be weird I'm sorry hes got like a weird blues clues vibe idk
Khan academy on YouTube for algebra and just general stuff, the khan academy website is what we use for sat prep
Audiobooks, I dont have a specific channel but sometimes I cant read the book but I need to do stuff. Finding a good one is difficult but once you find a good one you cant stop.
A lot of teachers make videos to teach stuff and let their students review it when they get home so I reccomend looking up whatever you're having trouble with.
Podcasts.
Other general tips:
Dont put things off until last minute.
Use everything at your disposal, like youtube and tiktok and pinterest to learn things, about school and real life skills.
Dont say no one ever taught you something if you can teach yourself.
Dont make excuses for yourself or others.
Growing up is realizing you need to be your own mom/dad and take care of yourself.
I dont take constructive criticism so smd or dont idk.
Learn as much as you can
Dont worry, if you did your best that's all you can do. And I mean your actual best not your half ass excuse that you think is your best
Girlfriends and significant others dont matter in school, what matters is the betterment of yourself and your future.

How a Computer Genius Bakes the Perfect Loaf of Bread
New Post has been published on https://computerguideto.com/must-see/how-a-computer-genius-bakes-the-perfect-loaf-of-bread/
How a Computer Genius Bakes the Perfect Loaf of Bread
You were chief technology officer at Microsoft; you have degrees in math, physics and economics; you hold hundreds of patents; youre a prolific author in both scientific and popular publications; what made you turn to food? I was interested in food before I was interested in any of those other things: Everybody is! I just never moved on. After I retired from Microsoft, I was cooking more, and I kinda thought there should be a big book I could get that would really tell me all about the latest techniques. Ultimately, I discovered there was no such book, and so I had to write it.
The book you had to write became Modernist Cuisine, an incredibly in-depth, scientific guide to basically all of cooking published in 2011. Why did you decide to focus on baking with your new book, Modernist Bread? Bread is one of the oldest foods of mankind. Its also a complicated food. You can eat a peach right off the tree, but bread is nothing like the grain its made from. Long before they knew how it worked, our ancestors figured out what to do. I wanted to go back using all the scientific techniques we have today and figure out if thats the best way to do things.
So what did you find out? One thing is that kneading is a fraud, at least as its normally described. It does not do what everybody says it does; its optional. There are all these no-knead bread recipes, but most books just sort of ignore that. What develops the gluten in bread is the flour just sitting with water. You can make the process happen faster if you knead, and it can affect the final texture of the bread, but its not necessary to the process.
Another thing we learned is that whole-wheat bread and whole-wheat flour is not any healthier for you than white bread and white flour. Its so different than what everybody knows that people think Im joking when I say it, but its definitely true. We also found that its difficult to get decent rye flour in the U.S. and as a result we dont get very good rye bread here. In Europe, they have better rye bread because they grind the flour in a special way, more finely.
Did you discover any techniques home bakers can easily use? The best way to make a crusty bread is to bake it in a cast-iron potbut use black cast-iron: The fancy enameled ones dont work as well. And the best way to cut your bread at home is with an electric carving knife, like people use on the turkey at Thanksgiving. The biggest thing is we try to explain how simple baking bread can be and how people shouldnt be afraid to make it at home. The fact is, bread is really quite forgiving, and with a good beginners recipe, you can get started.
The press release for Modernist Bread says that you and your more than 200 recipe testers used more than 19 tons of flour baking more than 36,000 loaves in more than 1,600 experiments over more than four years. Who ate all that bread? Mostly the people at our lab. There are about 100 people who work at our lab (not all on this project, of course), and they all got a lot of bread.
You come from a science background but also studied at Ecole de Cuisine La Varenne in France, which is very much dedicated to cooking as an art. How can the two approaches work together? Theres a wealth of knowledge that chefs and bakers have developed over the years thats still very valuable. They empirically discovered lots and lots of things without really knowing how it works. All the dishes and flavors that come from that, thats really important stuff. Other things, though, they say you do this for this reason, and sometimes thats not true, or you actually do it for a different reason. Thats also why we totally respect the methods of science and believe you should be able to test all your ideas and make sure theyre true, but at the same time, we also love the history and tradition of cooking and the debt we owe to all the chefs that have developed all this over all these years.
All three of your books take a very science-based approach to cooking, running hundreds of experiments on various techniques and ingredients to figure out what works best. Why dont you think more chefs do this? Theres a tremendous amount of tradition involved with cooking. I think if you actually understand how to do something, you have to understand why it works. In fairness, if you just follow a recipe, you dont need to know why it works. If youre happy with that, great. My book comes in for people who are curious about why it works, and if you want to create something new.
How did you first learn to cook? When I was about 9 years old, I discovered the library had a cookbook section, and I was fascinated. So I told Mom I was gonna cook Thanksgiving dinner all by myself. And I did it. I do a lot better at it these days, but that put me on the path to wanting to learn how to cook.
What does your home kitchen look like? A bit like the lab kitchen. To be honest, I dont think theres any equipment in there that would be in a normal home kitchen! I have a Thirode stove from France, two combi ovens, two French deck ovens for making bread, a huge cold-smoker, a sous-vide vacuum packer and a bunch of sous vide machines.
What are your favorite things to cook? My single favorite thing to do is barbecue. I was lucky enough to compete once in the world championship of barbecue with a team who would go on to win. It was no thanks to me, as the rookie on the team, but it was really fun to do. I also make a lot of French classics, so Im kind of all over the map.
Modernist Bread is a six-volume set that weighs in at over 50 pounds, has more than 2,500 pages in total and retails for more than $600. Who is the intended audience? Our books are for people who are passionate and curious about cooking. If youre not passionate, youre not gonna pick up a 2,600-page book. On the other hand, if you are passionate and curious, we will tell you things about bread that I dont think youll find anywhere else in the world. If youre a home baker, we have a lot of easy recipes, but we also want to include professionalsrestaurant chefs who might want to add house-made bread to their menus, as well as small-scale professional bakers.
What are your favorite places to eat in your home of Seattle? I love Nishino, Monsoon and Loulay. Theres also fantastic Chinese and Mediterranean food here. Were blessed with a lot of great food.
Which topic will the next book in the Modernist series cover? Right now, Im still on the book tour, so the next few months are definitely for promoting the book we have. Then well start thinking about what to do next. But there will absolutely be another book!
What are you working on right now outside the food world? I do research on asteroids, on dinosaurs. I take a lot of photographsI have a gallery in Vegas where we sell photos of food. I also have been making a couple of new microscopes and cameras to take pictures of things that arent possible with current equipment. Im a busy guy.
Modernist Bread will be released Nov. 7. You can follow Myhrvolds ongoing culinary experiments at modernistcuisine.com.

On Wednesday, April 3rd, we’re opening registration for the next Precision Nutrition Level 1 Certification group.
The certification gives health, fitness, and wellness professionals — along with those thinking of joining the field — the ability to turn their interest in nutrition into a valuable skill set they can use to help others.
And, the way the world is going, this skill set is needed now more than ever!
So, if you want to learn, we want to teach you, because…
Proven nutrition coaching is what’s missing from the health and fitness field today.
I got involved in nutrition coaching about 25 years ago.
At the time, something became immediately clear.
No matter how knowledgeable I was about the science of nutrition, without a deep understanding of how people actually change, everything I knew about food never really benefited those who came to me for help.
I started talking about this with friends and colleagues — physicians, personal trainers, manual and physical therapists, yoga teachers, group exercise instructors — and they were all experiencing the same frustrations.
Indeed, without effective nutrition coaching skills, most professionals struggle (and sometimes fail) to help clients and patients achieve their goals.
On the other hand, with effective nutrition coaching skills, health and fitness professionals can feel confident, competent, and credible.
They can offer advice they know is right, in the right way, so clients and patients achieve the health improvements and body transformations they’re after.
Truly, knowing how to coach nutrition effectively is the key to helping people get the results they want and deserve.

And imagine if, at the end of the process, you had a system to deliver the habit-based nutrition coaching you just learned, so you can grow your practice while working less and getting better results.

  Why choose Precision Nutrition?
There are many good reasons to choose the Precision Nutrition Certification to advance your knowledge and grow your coaching practice.
Here are just a few of them.
We wrote the book on nutrition coaching.
We couldn’t find a textbook that did all the things we wanted to do, nor all the things we wanted to teach others.
So we created one based on our extensive research and work with over 100,000 clients. It’s called The Essentials of Sport and Exercise Nutrition.
It’s a 600-page opus — now totally re-envisioned and in its 3rd edition — that covers every aspect of the latest science and practice of nutrition coaching.
The PN Level 1 Certification, 3rd Edition. There’s nothing else like it anywhere.
With this incredible learning resource we’re doing everything in our power to change the game. We’re out to educate and train a new, more effective, kind of health and fitness professional.
And we’re being recognized for it by the top organizations in the world.
The PN Method has been validated clinically.
The Precision Nutrition Method, which drives our Certification and ProCoach programs, was recently validated in 3 peer-reviewed studies.
This means that the system you’ll learn in the Level 1 program is truly “evidence-based”.
Our method was recently validated in peer-reviewed studies published in Internet Interventions, the Journal of Cancer Survivorship, and Obesity Science and Practice.
Having worked with over 100,000 clients, we know our system is highly effective at helping people lose fat, build strength, and make big health improvements. Now the medical and scientific communities know it too.
You get the latest science, the latest practice, the very best for your clients/patients.
As mentioned above, we’re constantly updating the course curriculum to keep pace with new discoveries in the field. That’s why our 3rd edition includes:
new textbook with the latest research findings in nutrition, physiology, change psychology, and coaching practice (click here to download the table of contents);
new video lectures, one for each textbook chapter, to help you better learn the material and retain what you’ve learned (check out a sample video below, it’s awesome);
new workbook with exercises and thought experiments to help prepare you for your end-of-chapter exams; and
new client assessments and forms to help you gain a better understanding of the needs of your clients/patients (click here to download an overview of the questionnaires and assessments).
As an example, here’s “Through the GI Tract” — which supplements Chapter 2 of the textbook. (Remember, every chapter has an awesome video like this, to go along with the text).

ok taking a break from writing some cute stuff to do this as a way to study bc I'm taking the final test to get me OUT OF THIS COURSE tomorrow!!!!!
also I'm tired and too lazy to bold things to make thks look cleaner I'm so sorry
so schools r funded right??? before they can be funded, there r two questions a district/state must ask:
the equity question: does each school across the state have the same funding? and
the adequacy question: is there enough funding so that students can effectively achieve?
(there was the kentucky education reform act (kera) that stated that every child in the state had the right to an adequate education!!)
there r other funding questions:
1) how much will each source pay?
2) is there equity in the distribution?
3) are the resources adequate so that all students can achieve the identified outcomes?
the primary sources of school funding are property taxes, sales/use taxes, and income taxes
the state uses sales and gross receipt taxes, income taxes, licenses, and miscellaneous things!
-
now I'm discussing school boards and school administration staff N stuff ok
so the school board has powers and duties n stuff:
- to obtain revenue
- to maintain schools
- to purchase sites n build buildings
- to purchase materials and supplies
- to organize and provide programs of study
- to employ necessary workers and regulate their services
- to admit and assign pupils to schools and control their conduct
the central office staff: the superintendent of a school works w a staff to carry out the district's program of edu
principals have duties too:
- instructional leadership
- building community relationships
- supervise staff
- select teachers and monitor their performance
- deal w students
- watch over the building and grounds
- administrate the attendance office (is administrate a word idk i wrote it differently in my notes shhh)
- take care of budgets!!
- share these responsibilities w assistant principals
support staff include: secretaries, custodians, etc
there are also department heads / team leads who:
- communicate and coordinate their grade or team
- meet w the principal from time to time and bring that info back to their departments
there are also instructional specialists who are basically hq expert teachers
there's also the state board of edu, that has two types of functions:
- regulatory functions: has the authority to establish rules and regulations that limit and permit action
- advisory functions: can only offer suggestions and indicate preference for action
the state legislation is generally responsible for creating, operating, managing, and maintaining state school systems; the governor can veto school legislation
-
that accountability keeps coming up: reminder, it's a school's obligation to take responsibility for what students learn
there's a thing called a value-added system that basically links higher test scores w teachers being good lol
there are concerns about that^ though, bc: students are not taught by the same teachers year to year and student performance is influenced by multiple things
teachers who have good improvement n stuff can get rewards like focused evaluations, financial rewards, and training programs
-
gotta know this theory thing next
it's called the child benefit theory and it:
- addresses the use of public funds for secular services (transportation, testing, textbooks, etc)
- services MUST benefit the student (not the school,, not a church, NOTHING BUT THE STUDENT)
- the nclb allows for funding for private school students!
- also upholds the limited use of title i funds at private schools
also gotta know ferpa. ferpa is the family educational rights and privacy act (aka the buckley act) and was enacted by congress in 1974; it governs who may see school records and under what conditions
-
teachers must have certain dispositions, like having enthusiasm for teaching, advocating continuous learning, and believing all children can learn
u alsp gotta know the diff between enabling laws and administrative laws and case laws:
- enabling laws are laws that come from the constitution that make it possible for educators to do certain things
- administrative laws are rules and regulations created by the executive branch that impact educators through the us department of edu
- case laws are laws that emerge from federal and state court cases
teachers also cannot show negligence or commit educational malpractice, and teachers have liability!!!!!
-
ok I could make a second post for this last section but the first one here was quite short anf I know this last one is also short so !!!!!! here we go again it's a double whammy:
first off, there r academic content standards. these are: formal, public statements of what students should know and be able to do in each of the content areas at various points in their pk-12 edu
there are curriculum guides. these are: documents prepared at the state or local district level that provide detailed info to help teachers plan instruction
-
there's also assessment knowledge that an aspiring teacher must know,,, like the purpose of assessment (the ultimate reason is to help students learn! there r two types: formative and summative)
so there r assessments FOR learning and assessments OF learning as well
- assessments FOR learning: both summative AND formative; include: student essays, projects, portfolios; they determine how deeply the students understand the content
- assessments OF learning: summative only; standard tests; they basically determine who moves forward
there are types of assessment measures as well: diagnostic, norm-referenced / criterion-referenced, capstone / summative
and performance measurements: called authentic assessments; learning logs and journals, (port)folios, interviews, observations, student products and projects, rubric
-
there's this thing called school reform. they're comprehensive programs to bring about school-wide changes in curriculum and instruction; their intention is to increase learning outcomes for all students
there are professional learning communities which are teams of teachers who work together to improve student learning; they develop common goals, determine ways to meet the goals, implement different approaches, and collect data to determine if the approaches met their goals
there's the school improvement process which is:
- an approach for gradual improvement of school curricula
- team of principal, teachers, team leads, department chairs, and parents
- they hold meetings to determine how well students are performing
- they identify specific targets that everyone will work on in the next year
there's a thing called success for all that's developed around the core assumption that all children can read!!
a school development program is a research-based, comprehensive k-12 edu reform program grounded in the principles of development; teams are guided by 3 principles (decision making, problem solving, and collaboration); promotes adult-student interactions necessary for good student development and academic learning in school
and theres this thing called "essential schools" that i forget if it's literally or like a ??? specific like??? act or whatever but either way:
- needs to master common core skills
- promotes vision of schooling in which students engages in in-depth and rigorous learning
- has principles which include: using ur mind w focus on learning goals, attempting to apply the goals to students, personalizing ur teaching and the students' learning, and student performance yo
-
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST!!!
common core state standards (ccss): a set of standards that describe knowledge and skills that students need for success in college and careers; their intent is to develop standards that focus what is most essential, to make standards that are learning-centered, and to focus on the expectations for student learning; there are debates and concerns tho bc it's available to all states, but adoption is voluntary/optional and the standards will expand until it's a national curriculum and states really don't like taking the same tests as other states

What if you could be a changemaker, a leader, the kind of professional who makes a real difference?
Imagine if you had all the nutrition, coaching, and change psychology research… all the scientific concepts… all the experience… all the practical “how-to” stuff… all in one place.
Imagine if you had a trusted source of education… a proven system… and real-life advice to help guide your development.
Imagine if your education came in a clear, understandable, self-paced learning format that suited your schedule.
And imagine if, at the end of the process, you had a system to deliver the habit-based nutrition coaching you just learned, so you can grow your practice while working less and getting better results.
That’s what The Precision Nutrition Level 1 Certification is here for.
Learn more about the science of nutrition plus how to apply what you know with the people who turn to you for help.
With the Precision Nutrition Level 1 Certification you’ll get better results, attract more clients/patients, keep them longer, grow your reputation, and increase your earning potential.

That’s why our 3rd edition includes:
new textbook with the latest research findings in nutrition, physiology, change psychology, and coaching practice (click here to download the table of contents);
new video lectures, one for each textbook chapter, to help you better learn the material and retain what you’ve learned (check out a sample video below, it’s awesome);
new workbook with exercises and thought experiments to help prepare you for your end-of-chapter exams; and
new client assessments and forms to help you gain a better understanding of the needs of your clients/patients (click here to download an overview of the questionnaires and assessments).
As an example, here’s “Through the GI Tract” — which supplements Chapter 2 of the textbook. (Remember, every chapter has an awesome video like this, to go along with the text).

The Precision Nutrition Certification is everything we’ve learned over the last 15 years, brought together, and are sharing with you.
Unlike most other certifications, this isn’t a program full of abstract theory that doesn’t work in the real world. (Nor is it a program full of internet level, social media arguer, keyboard jockey type information.)
Instead, it’s deep knowledge that’s client-tested, scientifically proven, and constantly updated based on the data we’ve collected working directly with over 100,000 clients.
In fact, Precision Nutrition is the only nutrition certification company in the world that successfully coaches real clients every day.
