Ah, that's because professors at universities aren't really teachers - they're researchers who also happen to teach sometimes. And many of them aren't teaching because they want to, they're doing it because they have to - oftentimes the university in question will have stipulations in their contracts (or elsewhere) that they have to teach "x" number of classes in return for (or as part of) the university supporting their research.

I think with community colleges the emphasis is much more on teaching and learning - they serve a much broader base consisting of many different kinds of people with many different goals. It's not just for scholars who want to do research, and so the professors there tend to be much more engaged with their students.

i really do think there’s a huge disconnect on here w/ people who have never used tiktok as to what it actually is and who actually uses it. the number of people i’ve seen call it a “teen dancing app” is actually insane. it has not been a teen dancing app since i was in high school, around 2016 - 2020. the main communities i saw on a daily basis were 1) black history/anti-racism educators, 2) high school & college teachers sharing in-classroom strategies and frustrations with the education system, 3) local/state political leaders giving real-time updates on behind-the-scenes government decisions, & 4) community activism & leadership. like tiktok is an adult platform. almost every person i interacted with was my age or older. and yes it completely depends on your fyp and how you interact with the app, yes there’s still teenagers and dance videos and literally anything else you can think of. but these communities of adults aren’t insubstantial at all, they have literally millions of interactions on a daily basis. there’s about a million other types of communities that i could name just off the top of my head, because the range of users was SO diverse and thriving. it’s a long-distance community tool, just like any other social media—and honestly much better than any other social media, because it relies primarily on the kindness of strangers. i saw at least 5-10 videos today of queer people in rural areas panicking because they don’t have any access to queer community on any other platform or in real life. and before i end this i do want to say i think tiktok is coming back, i think this is a highly orchestrated political move, etc., but i do know it won’t ever be exactly the same. people are panicking about free speech violations because tiktok was a place where people fucking SPEAK. i have never seen mass mobilization and communication in this same way for as long as i’ve been alive. it is the people’s app, not just a silly teenage thing. if you’re not on tiktok and never have been, please stop talking about it like you know anything at all😭

I think this is one of my favorite lines from the Wraith route because of (imo) how much the meaning changes depending on if you got there via Spectre or Nightmare. For Spectre, it honestly strikes me as a genuine question. Why are you doing this to her? If you're on the Spectre route, you presumably already know the Narrator can't really be trusted, since you had to reject his reward to get here. What are you hoping to gain from continuing to hurt her? For Nightmare, it honestly just makes me sad. As the Shifting Mound describes her, "She desires only companionship, but the only thing she knows is how to hurt." This line feels like a plea from someone who genuinely doesn't understand why you keep rejecting her. She wants to be with you, but she just can't understand how to do that in a way which doesn't hurt you.

The four Sages were called back into the past by Terrako and they remember it happening

Tulin got to meet his hero, Revali, and decided to be just like him, adopting his idol’s brash personality and drive. He practises Revali’s Gale and eventually comes up with his own way to show off his mastery of wind, and when trouble hits his home he rushes to fix it on his own to prove how strong he has become and because, like Revali, he can’t stand idly by while he knows there’s still things he can do.

For Yunobo, when he goes back and meets his ancestor Daruk, he is a very timid and reactive Goron. He needs a push from others to come up with ideas and carry plans through, and when bad things happen to him his first instinct is to use his fire magic as a shield, to wait until the threat has passed by or somebody else has come to save him. But when he is sent back in time to Divine Beast vah Rudania, for the first time he has to be the one doing the saving. Daruk encourages Yunobo and is proud of him from the moment they meet, and it’s this support that gives Yunobo the confidence to help fight against Calamity Ganon, and to start YunoboCo when he gets home.

For Sidon, meeting his family from 100 years ago is bittersweet. He is proud that he was able to protect his sister, and it’s a comfort to know there is a version of him who will grow up alongside Mipha because of his bravery and fighting prowess. But as much joy as he got from seeing her, hugging her, and hearing her voice again, it just reminds him of how unfair her death was, of just how young she was when she died and how he is now older even though he’s the younger sibling. And at the end of the war, when he’s returned to their original time, he has to readjust to her absence all over again, and in light of that is it really a shock he’d have her statue moved further away from his home? And it also explains why he’s so desperate to protect Yona from the sludge.

Riju in AoC still a new ruler to her people, despite her accomplishments in BotW, she still feels guilty over the temporary loss of the Thunder Helm and isn’t sure if she can lead the Gerudo. She has a lot of confidence but is quick to falter when things go wrong. Urbosa treats Riju as a capable fighter despite her young age, and teaches her that she should never give up, to keep trying even when her resolve falters. There is always something you can do, even when it’s just stalling for time until help can arrive. Urbosa guides her in mastering the Thunderhelm, and possibly begins teaching her to summon lightning herself after Kohga attempts to steal it, and at the end of their time together Urbosa tells Riju she’s certain she’ll lead the Gerudo well. Riju treasured her time being mentored by Urbosa so much that she considers what Urbosa would do during the Upheaval in her diary in TotK.

I think the entire reason Tulin was added to the DLC was because the TotK team had already decided that Tulin was going to be the Sage of Wind, and that since the other sages were going to meet their Champions Tulin had to as well.

At some point in the years between Botw and TotK Teba, Tulin, Sidon, Yunobo, Riju and Patricia were summoned back in time by Terrako to aid the Champions during the Calamity, and even though those events took place in a parallel timeline and had no bearing on the world they returned to, the Sages’ personalities at the beginning of TotK are because of their experiences during the Calamity and the bonds they made with the Champions.

Cobra Kai - And my Dissection of why Demetri felt so... wrong.

If you like Demetri, and all the ways the writers gave him flaws that just- never were really explored, you do you. His actor is nice enough and people are entitled to their opinion.

But for me he was just one mistake after another writing wise. And I want to explore them. As how we got here is honestly worth looking at.

I'm planning to talk all six seasons so spoilers for all across his story. And Hawk's story because they aren't really separate narratives.

The Basics

So... a usual thing in writing is to talk about what a character wants compared to what a character needs. Their drives, how those drives determine their actions. Sets who they are.

What are Demetri's?

I mean it, he has short term motivations in the early seasons (S1-S3) but after that he's just... there. And often those early season drives are very 'in the moment' and lack any deeper impact to them. This isn't exactly a problem, because he's not really a main character. But it makes him feel very hollow.

He would like Kyler and co to stop bullying him, but he doesn't do anything about it. He just enjoys the fruits of Miguel and Eli's labor. He likes girls talking to him, but he won't work to make that happen. It happens in spite of him. His plan is to enjoy life when he's 25 and rich in the tech sector (a mindset that feels worse in hindsight).

If he left Miyagi Do after the events of Season 3, to just do his own thing away from the the others nothing realistically changes about the show. He isn't relevant because the writers didn't make him relevant.

Demetri vs. Karate

All of that is, understandably, bad. But that puts him in line with Chris, Mitch, and the other 'characters who vaguely exist' on the show. And those two don't cause me as much trouble. What makes Demetri worse? Well next is his relationship with Karate.

Demetri is the only character with an actually antagonistic relationship with Karate, that thing everyone does. The only character close to Demetri as far as 'hating Karate' goes is Antony. Who shows a bit more 'growing to appreciate' Karate as his part of the plot goes on.

At the start of Season 6 the only reason Demetri is trying at all is Yasmine would break up with him if he was a loser intentionally. This is, by far, the biggest issue for Demetri as a character in the show. He cares about Karate once in one scene in Season 2, and then immediately isn't invested again after he's not shoving it in Eli's face, and is never invested again.

I'm not doing a full section of Demetri and Yasmine's relationship. Short version is they used it as a joke because the image of them making out is surprising and that's it. There's no actual narrative behind it, it does nothing for his character, it's just there.

Demetri vs. Hawk

So Eli in Season 2 is a lot, excluding pathologized diagnosing of Eli's behavior isn't super helpful and I'll try to avoid it. He created an image of himself as a badass, and protecting that image matters to him. He likes not being the lip, he likes deciding his own name, he likes being seen as more than a victim.

And he runs a bit wild protecting it and becomes a huge jackass. Characters on this show are flawed and do bad things for fairly legit (but not absolving) reasons.

However, Eli becoming a monster doesn't change how much of Demetri's purpose in the show was trying to hammer Eli back into the sad pathetic loser that relied on Demetri for everything, and that's kind of fucked up. Because he started it before Eli went evil, and he continued it after Eli became good again.

And that's a serious red flag on Demetri as a person. As a character this would be fine, if like Kyler dating Sam, the show made it clear that this behavior is wrong and clearly a red flag. The show painted all of it as either 'Demetri is a good friend' or 'Demetri standing up against Evil Bad Hawk.'

And this is their relationship through all six seasons. Because the entire basis of their conflict in Season 6 is Eli (who has grown and changed so much over the show) is not sure he would be happy going to MIT for college, and wants to explore other options.

Demetri does change his college plans in the finale to stay with Eli, but it's not attached to any other real growth on Demetri's part.

How to Fix This?

There are two fixes to this, and they are completely contradictory in nature. As is all complicated writing things. The first and harder option is to make this an arc. Demetri learns to find value in Karate, and as he learns to understand why Eli took to it, he figures out that Eli being so reliant on him was comforting, and his lashing out is due to being lonely.

You can make it romantic if you want. But he has to realize he was using Eli, and that is bad. And it wasn't fair of him to hate Hawk for being more outgoing than Eli.

This means Demetri is doing Karate to be close to his best friend/boyfriend, he's doing it because it makes him a better more rounded person, and he actually is invested in the plot.

Or you cut his screentime to make him on par with Mitch, Chris, Yasmine, and Moon as 'a character that exists' but not 'an actual protagonist.' The gulf between him and even the kid squad (Antony, Kenny, and Devon) when it comes to motivation and character traits is massive. He doesn't have a balanced 'rival' to him the way Migeul vs. Robby, Sam vs. Tory, or Kenny vs. Antony work.

Eli is defined by the extremes between Eli and Hawk more than he's ever defined by his rivalry with Demetri.

If he just isn't as much of a player in the series, the flaws in his writing would just be less obvious. But he's given so much screentime and they do nothing with it. Parts are also just written without a full grasp of what he did? In the same ways Zara is a much worse person in practice than what the writers wanted.

Demetri being a comedy character doesn't help his case either, annoyingly. But that's less about the character and more about the writers just not giving him really solid comedic bits. His best repeated bit was 'pop culture reference' into 'Daniel points out that reference does not support Demetri's point.'

Just thought about Zelink for a bit and my opinion on it (and basically it's: makes sense in some games but not really in others imo, or it's more interesting for them not to be romantic in certain games even (OoT comes to mind, I love love love what their non-romance can be in that one and it has wild layers to unpack) but you do you as long as people don't get extraordinarily weird with it which can and do happen), and it kind of made me realize I dooon't... I don't think I really vibe with them as a couple in the Wild era? I know the game, especially TotK, kind of pushes that a little bit, but... I feel like they're too codependant in a bad way for it to be a good idea for either of them honestly? Zelda never really gets over her urge to destroy herself in order to overcompensate her shame at not being perfect nor embody a perfect idea of what she should represent, and Link never gets over his literal oath of dropping whatever he's doing to constantly reshape his life around her. I feel like, for them to be together and for it to be cool and a good time and not a constant loop of feeding into each other's negative tendencies, they would need to completely and utterly dismantle Hyrule and then be a little selfish and unimportant for a while. And even then, old habits would die hard I think.
