“we were lovers in a past life” trope but the current incarnations are enemy-to-lovers trope. when.

emotional processing is so funny because sometimes you’ll be violently sobbing on your bedroom floor over something that happened 4 years ago and then you’ll just. get up and make coffee. and go to the grocery store. and take all this fundamental sadness for a walk. and ponder the cosmic experiences of humanity while eating a sandwich. and that’s healing.

Fanfic tiktok is wild... I see so many people saying shit like "I could never read anything below 60k!!", or "What story can you even tell in under 5k words?" or "A oneshot below 10k isn't even a story!" or "I always filter completed fics by 100k< only!"
And I'm like...
A) which fandoms are you reading fics for where you have this kind of offerings on the regular?
B) have you heard of short stories? If you truly think every story NEEDS to be longform to connect with people, I sincerely feel sorry for you.
C) Average novel length is between 50k to 100k. I'm sorry, but CONSISTENTLY demanding fic writers to push out fics of that length is insane. Just think about it: YOU DEMAND AUTHORS TO PUT OUT FICS THAT COMPARE TO COMMERCIAL NOVELS IN LENGTH (AND QUALITY) AS A BASELINE.
Yall are wilding.

Had a rough day. Can I maybe get some Joe and Nicky cuddling or generally doing something cute? Maybe at their favorite place 🥺 have a great day 🥰
The healing that flows through Joe’s veins—through Nicky’s—works its magic at an inconsistent pace. There’s always the first heady rush of repair—the tugging back from darkness; the drawing of breath—and then the dependable work of bones setting and muscle renewed. But when life is assured, and the bleeding stemmed, the easing of knots and stretching of tendons takes its own meandering time. When one of them bears the brunt of injuries and the other does not, there’s always a lag between the rightness of the first and the healing of the second. And today, it’s Nicky who limps, who winces when he stands, who rubs the base of his back with a broad hand to ease the pain that lingers there.
Joe can do nothing to help speed the process. There are painkillers, and they do their job, but the knitting of their flesh generates deep aches that the miracles of modern medicine cannot touch. So he doesn’t hover, lets Nicky set his own pace for recovery, and simply accompanies him along the way. They clean themselves up. They eat. Nicky goes to the garden outside the safe house to pull weeds and set the flowerbeds to rights. Joe goes to the living room and sprawls on the couch to nap.
He's beginning to drift, warm beneath a blanket that doesn’t cover his socked feet, when Nicky enters the room. Joe raises an eyebrow and waits.
“I cannot easily bend,” Nicky says stiffly. “The weeds will have to wait.”
Joe lifts the blanket, and Nicky crosses the room and slots himself onto the sofa. They have years of experience in crafting comfort from small spaces, and Joe shifts just enough for Nicky to curl into his body, gets his arms around him and holds him tight.
“Where?” Joe asks as Nicky tugs the blanket around them both and settles.
“My back,” Nicky mumbles against Joe’s shirt, and Joe eases his hand beneath Nicky’s sweater and spreads his fingers against the low curve of his spine. Nicky sighs gratefully. “Mmmph.”
Joe likes few things as much as this, the simple press of their bodies without any demand, comfort spun out in a moment of pause. He rubs his nose against Nicky’s hair, feeling Nicky growing heavier, sleepier beside him. “Soon,” he whispers, a promise that the pain will ease, and his own eyes grow heavy as he tumbles asleep.

Me, seeing a picture of an abandoned chapel: It's just like in The Old Guard...
Me, seeing baklava at the grocery store: Wow, this is just like in The Old Guard when Andy--
Me, looking at the overcast sky: Wow, it's so grey and monochrome outside. Just like the colour scale in the 2020 hit Netflix movie The Old Gua--

I know some fic writers get stressed about writing tropes they think are too popular or overdone, and I need you all to know that I just spent 4 hours reading every iteration of the same exact fic plot I could find, and they all brought me an indescribable amount of joy. Listen. Listen. Sometimes you want cakes of many flavours and sometimes you want Nine Carrot Cakes
