25 Days of La Fayette: December 5th - John E. Hagey
(A short notice before we begin; I really enjoyed researching Hagey - although he drove me crazy once or twice. First of all, everybody spelled his name differently. While Hagey is the most common spelling, there is also Hague, Hagar, Haguy, Hagie and what not all.
I first came across Hagey when I stumbled over his entry in the databank of the Valley Forge Muster Rolls. The muster rolls describe him as an aide-de-camp and a member of La Fayette’s lifeguard. While some other men we have looked at thus far had only served for a very short time as La Fayette’s aide-de-camps, Hagey might have served the shortest – if at all. I thought I had a pretty clear picture of the man’s life and the life of his descendants until I found his application for a pension – that document was a wild ride.)
John E. Hagey was born in 1748 in Strasburg and died on July 13, 1841 in Nashville where he was laid to rest in the Nashville cemetery. His grave is marked with a headstone bearing a short summary of his long and eventful life:
The Nashville City Cemetery Association, Inc., Hagey, John E., Section 28.4, ID # 280352. (08/22/2022)
John E. Hagey
1748 – 1841
Born in Strasburg, Alsace, went to France 1777. Came
to America with Genera Lafayette. Chosen as a companion
and later a body guard for the General. Served in the
French Light Horse and became famous in the Battle
Of White Plains and the Siege of Yorktown and was dis-
charged at Newcastle, N. Y. Went to Harrisburg, Pa.
Became a U.S. Citizen. Married Catherine Ault. Migrated
to Greensboro, N.C. Moved to Knoxville, Tenn. and
then to Nashville where he lived the remainder of
his life. In 1825, his work took him to Huntsville, Ala.
for a short period. While there he learned his old
General was to visit Nashville. He walked over 100
Miles to see Gen. Lafayette 44 years after his dis-
charge. He was 77 at the time. Arrived at Nashville
while the parade was in progress. Placing himself
Properly as the General approached, Mr. Hagey
bowed before him. Arose and was recognized and
emotionally embraced by Lafayette. The crowd was
moved to tears. John Hagey was member of
McKendree M. E. Church. A devout Christian. He died
In the Faith July 13, 1841. Was given a military
funeral attended by 5000 people. Laid to rest
4 p.m. 7-14-1841.
Asleep in Jesus
The Nashville City Cemetery Association, Inc., Hagey, John E., Section 28.4, ID # 280352. (08/22/2022)
This marker was erected by Hagey’s great-great-great grandson Dwight Bennett. The homepage of the cemetery also mentions that the current marker is a replacement marker. It underwent restoration in 2008.
There are a few things I would like to mention concerning this stone. First, you see the spellings Catherine and Catharine equally often in official documents. For the sake of this post, I will go with the spelling that is inscribed on the marker. Second, I could not find any primary record of La Fayette and Hagey meeting again in Nashville. There is nothing in La Fayette’s correspondences nor in Auguste Levasseur’s journals. There are however a number of secondary sources mentioning and describing such a reunion.
John and Catherine had ten children, Mary (married Steven H. Cheek), Catherine (married Joseph Baker), Elizabeth (married Nicolas Becker), Susan (married Hiram W. Martin), John (never married), Sary (married James Nealy), Margaret (married Odle B. Thrift), Nancy (married John E. Wilson), George W. (never married) and Mariah (married “Jenkins”). It appears as if there were still some more children who sadly died young. The application for a pension mentions the name of the children listed above along with their spouses and ages. As, going from the given ages, some children have died prior to the pension application and some are still alive, these ages can not be linked to a certain date and are therefore rather unhelpful.
Some of John E. Hagey’s descendants however made quite a name for themselves and we find them and the family referenced in several, more local, history books. The following is written about the Reverend James Columbus Petrie:
The History of Union County, Kentucky, Courier Co., 1886, p. 848-850.
Then there is this piece about the Honourable William Brown of the firm Brown & Bruner, bankers from Metropolis in Illinois:
The Biographical Review of Johnson, Massac, Pope and Hardin Counties, Illinois, Chicago Biographical Publishing Co., 1893, p. 560-562.
All of these leads us to John E. Hagey’s application for a pension. His record has been transcribed and revised in 2015 and can be found along with many, many other pension records in various archives. The typed document is seven pages long, so while I will not include it in full, here is the link to the PDF document for everybody who wants to read it.
The record starts with a statement by Hagey himself, made on August 1, 1832 and then two affidavits. The first statement was made by Daniel McCoy (made on October 24, 1837) and the second statement was from Peter Jennings (also made on October 24, 1837). Next in the records is a letter from George W. Hagey from May 14, 1841 on behalf of his mother who was recently widowed and also an official statement from George, given on July 8, 1859. It follows an obituary for John E. Hagey, a letter form the Department of the Interior, dated November 2, 1859 and lastly an official document from the Senate of the United States.
Hagey’s claim for a pension was initially denied in 1832 because it was concluded that he was part of the French troops and not a regular member of the Continental Army. He was therefore not entitled to a pension from the United States. After his death in 1841, his widow Catherine (who lived to the ripe age of 106) applied for a widow’s pension and was in the end denied as well and on the same terms.
To make matters short, Hagey’s statements contradict with themselves and with the history of both La Fayette’s life and the American War of Independence. He claims to have been with La Fayette in places where La Fayette had not been at the stated date, he claimed to have been with La Fayette when he had been wounded – in a battle that the Marquis actually never participated in and so on and so forth. While some of these discrepancies can be attributed to old age and a failing memory (La Fayette himself confused some events from the War for Independence during his tour in 1824/25), others are a bit more confusing.
The whole application can be summoned up by this report, written by J. Thompson, Secretary in the Department of the Interior on November 2, 1859:
Sir [Hon. George C. Whiting, Comm’r. of Pensions],
I have carefully considered the claim of Catharine Hagie, widow of John Hagie, for bounty land under Act of March 3d 1855, &c, and also for pension under Acts of June 7th 1832, and July 7th 1838,upon which an appeal has been taken from your decision.
The soldier in the application he made in 1832 declares that he came over to this country with La Fayette, as a volunteer to assist the Americans in the Revolutionary war, and that he served as a private in the regiment of Light Horse under Col. Polorotski and Capt. Escaline, to the end of the war. His claim under the Act of June 7th 1832 was rejected, and since his death the widow has renewed it, and asserted in her own behalf her title to bounty-land and pension.
To justify the allowance of either of the claims for pension it is necessary that the soldier should have “served in the Continental line or State troops, volunteers or militia,” And to obtain bounty-land under the Act of 1855, that he should have been regularly mustered or paid by the United States.
His own statement shows that he could have come under neither of these conditions, for he served (if, indeed, he rendered any service) in the French Troops, and was paid by the King of France.
I am of the opinion, therefore, that these claims are bad, and accordingly affirm your rejection of them.
The papers which accompanied your report are herewith returned to your office.
I am, very respectfully,/ Your Obd’t. Serv’t.. J. Thompson, Secretary
Interesting, is it not? I started this research by think that John E. Hagey was, maybe only for a very, very short period of time, one of General La Fayette’s aide-de-camps and otherwise served as a lifeguard – a fascinating aspect of army life in and on itself and one that I have never really looked into. There were quite some interesting sources relating to Hagey and his case seemed to be a very simple one at first. Now, at the end of this post however, I am no longer entirely sure if Hagey truly served under La Fayette in the way that he had stated. I do believe however that he had been acquainted with La Fayette one way or another.
Opinions anybody?

Huobi Study Club: The ETH London upgrade comes, will ETH’s price surpass BTC’s?
Huobi Observation
The ETH Foundation has announced the latest updatesabout the London upgrade on July 15. This upgrade will be activated when the main network reaches a block height of 12,965,000 and the exact time is expected between August 3 and 5. In addition, proposals such as EIP-3529, EII-3198 and EIA-3541 will also optimize network performance, which will lay the foundation for future upgrades. The number of deposits of ETH2.0 deposit contract addresses are increasing.
Business Insider reported that Goldman Sachs predictedthe total market value of ETH could exceed Bitcoin over the next few years. The agency believes that ETH currently looks to be the crypto asset with its highest and potential practical usage as ETH has the most popular platform for developing smart contract applications.
Huobi Study Club believes that ETH holders are less willing to sell ETH currently. Before its implementation, the amount of ETH that locked in ETH 2.0 deposit contracts will continue to grow and the actual circulation will decrease. After the upgrade in London, ETH network performance is expected to be optimized, the level of Gas fees is going to reduce, which will contribute to the further development of its ecology. In addition, with the implementation of EIP-1559, theconstantly destroyed ETH will exacerbate the deflation.
However, Huobi Study Club considers it will be very difficult for ETH to beat BTC. Although the data shows that some ETH holders are less willing to sell, these holders are mainly a group with knowledge of blockchain technology and are relatively less compared to traders in the market. This group won’t control the price of ETH. The current performance of ETH in the secondary market is not as strong as expected, the trend is weak, even if there is such a good upgrade in London, but there is no significant boost. The technical threshold also objectively limits the mainstream funds to enter ETH in large scale. So the ETH price is hard to surpass BTC’s.

What did you do during your gap years? How did you find a job? When did you start applying for them?
Gap Year 1: After I graduated from Undergrad, I spent the summer "studying" for the MCAT. That summer was a tough one- I was burnt out from 4 years of grinding for my Biochemistry and Public Health degree. I was also president of a few clubs, did research for 3 years, and was active on campus. I took the MCAT without doing the necessary work needed to achieve the score I wanted to achieve. I wanted to buy some time to figure out if Medicine was for me. I applied to Biomedical Science Master's programs- I knew I wanted to pursue something in medicine. However I was unsure if I wanted to go the Ph.D route or the Medical School route. I started off the master's program taking basic science courses: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Doing the program also bought me time to study for the MCAT again.
Gap Year 2: I continued the program and took more courses such as Anatomy, Medical Physiology, Genetics, Neuroscience, and Microbiology. I also started working in a Microbiology research job- however I quickly realized doing research (while I thoroughly enjoy it and have had wonderful experiences) is not what I was passionate about. I came alive when talking about clinical cases and treatment plans in my courses and finally KNEW that this was for me.
Gap Year 3: I started studying for the MCAT again and began applying for jobs for the following year. I knew I wanted to take the MCAT in the summer, around the time I began applying. So I planned out how and when I would be able to study for it. In addition, I was working on writing a research paper on Lifestyle Modifications and management of Mental Health Disorders. This year was the most difficult for me- studying for the MCAT can be incredibly isolating and challenging. In a future post I'll discuss how to manage your mental health during this time. I learned a lot about myself and my study habits during this time. By the end of this year I graduated with a Master's degree!!!
Gap Year 4: I was preparing medical school applications and had taken the MCAT by July. I submitted all of my applications by August and was getting secondaries around that time as well. After I finished my research paper and the MCAT in August- I began applying for jobs. I will say this was an incredibly last minute thing to do- I was waiting and applying for about a month and a half before I heard back for job interviews. I heard back from an OB/GYN clinic and got a job as a medical assistant. I had no previous experience as a scribe or medical scribe so I thought this would be a good opportunity to gain clinical experience. I HIGHLY recommend working in a hospital or clinic setting to see how you handle the everyday demands of the job. It was one of the highlights of my gap years and I made wonderful connections with patients and coworkers while there. I started hearing back from medical schools for interviews around November. I had interviews in December, January, and March. I was waitlisted at two DO schools, and accepted to one MD program. This year, while it had its highs, also had devastating lows. Eventually I did get into a wonderful school and am very happy with where I have ended up. But I know the STRUGGLE it took to get here.

New Muse - Benji Dunn
Note: Benji is not a new character of mine, he’s actually my longest muse to date - I’ve been writing him on his own blog since July 2012, however I’ve struggled a lot lately and I think a lot of that has to do with him being separate from the rest of my muses. I’m hoping having him over here will keep him more active and get some more interest. The single muse blog thing means that I have a lot more info for him than I do any other muses - I’ll be condensing this eventually for the sake of reading and sanity, but everything is here for now.
Full Name: Benjamin Matthew Dunn Known As: Benji, Benj, Agent Dunn Date of Birth: 29th August Age Range: 31-46 (older and younger available) Place of Birth: London, England Nationality: British/American Species: Human Height: 1.78m Hair Colour: Blond/Brown Eye Colour: Blue, sectoral heterochromia (flash of brown in his right eye) Occupation: IMF Agent/Technician Marital Status: Single Sexuality: Homosexual/Homoromantic (40+ ships only) Fandom: Mission Impossible Faceclaim: Simon Pegg
Full Biography under the cut for length.
History/Family
Benji is the second child to Andrew Dunn and Victoria Dunn. He has one older brother, Jonathan Andrew Dunn, who is four years older than him. Benji’s father worked as an accountant while his mother was a member of the British Army. Being an army child meant moving around a lot for the boys, but they eventually came to like the excitement of moving. The family wound up settling in America when Benji was 13, where he finished his secondary school education, however when he graduated, he applied for and was accepted into Oxford University. Benji returned to England when he was 19 and attended Oxford for his Bachelors and his Masters, and on graduation, he decided that he enjoyed life in America and returned to his family.
As mentioned, Benji has one sibling. Jonathan was born February 22nd 1972. Jonathan married his wife, Emily, in 1999. They have two children, Luke (born in 2003) and Sophie (born in 2009).
Education/IMF
Benji studied Computer Science, with units taken in Biological Science at Oxford University. He graduated with distinctions and high distinctions all around before continuing to take his postgraduate MSc in Computer Science.
Upon returning to America after he completed his masters, Benji was on the lookout for jobs in the field. He took a few here and there, until one day, he found what looked like a great opportunity. It seemed to be just a regular advertisement for a technician job with the Department of Transportation in Washington DC.
Figuring it would be interesting to give it a try, Benji put in an application as the technician and decided to see what would happen. Needless to say, he was very surprised when he was offered a job with them. At the age of 26, he packed up, said goodbye to his family, and moved over to DC. It was only once he arrived there that he found out that this job was far from normal.
He worked in IMF’s technician labs until taking the field exam in early 2011. He spent some time shadowing Agent Trevor Hanaway, a field agent who had been working out on away missions for quite a few years. He later joined Trevor’s team, consisting of the agent himself and Agent Jane Carter. Both agents really took him under their wing and Benji learnt a lot from them, growing to consider them close friends. They ran a few missions together until they were sent after a file containing Russian nuclear launch codes. A simple enough mission, but nothing in their job is ever simple. When it was clear that someone else was after the file, Trevor was killed by a contract killer, Sabine Moreau, and the file was lost.
Amidst their grief for Trevor, Jane and Benji were then sent to extract Ethan Hunt from Rankow Prison in Moscow in order to track down the codes and stop emerging nuclear extremist Kurt Hendricks, codename Cobalt, from detonating a bomb that would throw the United States and Russia into a nuclear war. After their infiltration of the Kremlin was thrown into disarray by Hendricks himself, resulting in the destruction of a large section of the building and the blame falling on the trio, Benji, Ethan and Jane found themselves fugitives. With IMF shut down due to the president initiating Ghost Protocol, they were forced to work underground, along with mysterious chief analyst William Brandt.
After many near misses, the team managed to prevent the detonation and Hendricks was killed. Ethan chose the three to join his team once more and Benji, despite being plagued by nightmares and cold sweats from his first major mission, Benji jumped at the opportunity.
When CIA Director Hunley shut down the IMF for ‘misconduct’ after the events of the Cobalt mission, Benji found himself once again stuck behind a desk. For six months, he was dragged through weekly polygraphs by Hunley to test his loyalties to Ethan, resulting in him having to perfect his lies. When he was tricked into going to Vienna to help Ethan, he realised just how much trouble his friend was in and insisted on staying to help him track down a Rogue Nation, known as the Syndicate, despite the potential risks. Sadly, those risks became a reality when Benji found himself kidnapped by menacing Syndicate leader Solomon Lane, used as leverage to control Ethan’s actions. Lane strapped a bomb to Benji’s chest and placed him on a highly sensitive pressure trigger in a crowded London restaurant, leaving Benji fearing for his life and the lives of those around him. Fortunately, Ethan managed to convince Lane to let Benji go and the team were able to bring him down together. This very near miss has left Benji shaken and despite his attempts to shove his feelings aside, he is struggling with the aftermath. He hopes that with his teams help, he can move on from this.
Medical Info
Benji is short sighted and has worn glasses since he was 14 years old. When working, however, he tends to wear contact lenses, as they are far more practical for his line of work.
Benji’s only known allergy is to peanuts. This makes it difficult for him to wear masks in the field as some of the compounds are peanut based. (Inspired by a fanfiction found here)
Benji has no history with mental health issues, however he has developed some symptoms of PTSD following his abduction in London.
His oldest scar is one that runs across his forehead, a straight line above his right eyebrow. When he was 5, he was playing in their grandparent’s garden with his brother, then 9. Jonathan accidentally pushed Benji while playing and Benji fell and hit his head on the bird bath.
His fingertips are calloused from the Cobalt mission, the wiring having cut up the skin quite badly.

whats the process of applying to med school?
hoo boy..... very long and very tedious. i’ll break it down for ya:
take the MCAT: i took it in april of 2019, but most people take it the same year they apply. this is important because for a lot of schools this serves as a benchmark for how they’re going to look at you as an applicant. it’s not a make or break thing, but if you have a strong score, they’re gonna wanna take a closer look at your application.
primary application opens beginning of may. this is where you list all your personal information, your transcripts, your courses and grades, your work/activities, your personal statement, test scores, and references. this is also where you designate the schools you’re applying to. the work/activities section is probably the most important because thats where you get to show off your skills and everything you’ve done to show schools you’re ready to dedicate yourself to the profession.
submit the primary and wait to get verified. what they don’t tell you is that everything is rolling, and that means you need to get everything done as quickly as possible. im planning on submitting on the first day you can, which is at the end of may. the earlier you submit, the less time it takes to get verified (the application service cross-checks everything you put in against your transcripts to make sure it all checks out).
start receiving secondaries. you’ll start getting secondary applications from the schools you listed on your primary around end of june/early july. that month in between is ideal for pre-writing secondaries because you want a quick turnaround in getting them back to schools because, again, everything is rolling. a lot of schools repeat prompts and there are plenty of online resources that have old prompts listed so you can pull from those and start writing them. that way, all you have to do when you get the secondary is copy, paste, pay the fee, and submit. the sooner you send the secondary back, the sooner your application is complete, and adcoms can start considering you for an interview.
wait for an interview invite. this is the most annoying part....interviews can come LITERALLY at any moment. schools typically start sending them out in august and will interview through march. that means from any time between august and march, you could hear something. or you might not hear something. it’s literally a crapshoot.
after an interview, you then wait for a decision. first decisions are usually sent out around mid-october, and you can get an acceptance, waitlist, or rejection from that point all the way through JULY. waitlists typically happen toward the end of the cycle (march/april). i know people who have gotten off waitlists in july. it’s the most infuriating thing, but that’s just how it works.

MAUNA KEA - MANA VERSUS MONEY
Indian Country Today - October 6, 2019 - By Anne Keala Kelly
The protest blocking the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope on Mauna Kea is now in its 11th week. Hawaii’s state and county officials still claim they can find “a way to move forward,” though there is little evidence such a path exists.
Hawaii Island Mayor Harry Kim, whom Governor David Ige put in charge of the crisis in August, released a proposal that calls for the inclusion of “Native Hawaiian leaders” in future management decisions for the summit. But Kim’s plan fails to address the current situation, and, given that he has no jurisdiction over the summit, his plan is the legal equivalent of fairy dust.
The ku kia‘i mauna, or guardians of the mountain, for their part, have remained steadfast in opposition to the telescope.
After word spread of a possible sweep by law enforcement three weeks ago, the ku kia‘i mauna numbers grew to some 1,500 almost overnight. That had been the (approximate) daily average by week three of the protest, when a tropical storm slimmed the crew to about 300. Now, there are between 250 and 300 people camped out 24-7 in an area that stretches about a quarter of a mile in both directions of the pu‘uhonua, or refuge, at the base of Pu‘u Huluhulu. That’s where the main camp operations are set up with a makeshift kitchen and other facilities, such as a Mauna Medic tent where they treat minor injuries. Although the camp is relatively quiet, another word to describe the atmosphere is prepared.
Rumors swirl almost daily about a possible middle of the night police raid -- and so everyone is on guard.
There is a protocol in place in the event that law enforcement deploys teargas. Each kupuna, or elder, has a kit that includes goggles and a respirator. Aunty Keala is being fitted for one, too. She is wheelchair bound, and one of the 28 kupuna who were arrested on July 17th.
One thing has become abundantly clear. The only way to move the telescope’s construction forward will be by force. It isn’t just that the parties involved are not on the same page, they aren’t even in the same book.
There are two completely different paradigms standing toe to toe on the Mauna Kea access road. One emerges from a culture that measures political and social power as being imbued with what Hawaiians call mana, meaning something spiritual or divine in nature. The other is from a culture that views power, particularly in a settler-colonial place like Hawaii, as monetized, material force.
Money remains the dominant factor in the state’s decision to support the telescope. Constantly referenced in local and national press is the $1.4 to $2 billion price tag for the thirty-meter telescope and disbelief, sometimes bordering on condescension, at Native Hawaiian opposition. Although reasoning for the telescope is cloaked in western notions of science, recently, a deeper incentive for the University of Hawaii, which controls subleases for the summit, has also become clearer.
In an interview with the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, UH Vice President for research and innovation, Vassilis Syrmos, expressed concern over National Science Foundation dollars that will go elsewhere without the telescope. According to Syrmos, the university is “expected to be positioned to receive billions for TMT related astronomy research and instrumentation development.”
Kealoha Pisciotta, whose organization Mauna Kea Anaina Hou has stopped every telescope project proposed over the past two decades with legal challenges, is a former telescope operator for the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. In some ways for her, the thirty meter telescope is deja vu. “When we challenged NASA’s 2003 plan to expand the Keck footprint on the summit with 10 more telescopes, Ed Stone was the executive director of Keck at that time,” she said. “Now, he’s the executive director of the TMT International Observatory.” (The W.M. Keck Observatory, informally known as Keck, is named for William Keck, the founder of Superior Oil.)
Pisciotta’s knowledge of how the astronomy industry functions is almost as extensive as her cultural knowledge.
“My family has been star people since time immemorial,” Pisciotta said. While hanging a map of the summit in her tent, she explained some of Mauna Kea’s alignments in relation to the solstices, equinoxes and other sacred places.
Like many Hawaiians, Pisciotta has genealogical ties to the mountain that involve religious and cultural practices that include traditional astronomy. Indigenous knowledge of the stars is what enabled Pacific Islanders to navigate the largest ocean in the world without any western instruments for millennia.
“They want to build the TMT in the middle of the ring of shrines,” she said, referring to an area where practitioners have always viewed the heavens, and placed their family ahu, or altars, and ho‘okupu or offerings. The “ring” as archeologists call it, demarcates the sacred precinct of what Hawaiians say is “The realm of the gods” and “The holy of holies.” In fact, the state designated the summit as a conservation district largely because of its cultural significance to Hawaiians. But the state giveth and taketh at will, when it comes to how “ceded land” is leased out.
“Mauna Kea is part of the so-called ceded lands,” Pisciotta said. “That means it’s the crown and government land of the Hawaiian Kingdom. That land was never legally transferred to the U.S. They just took it over and called it ceded. It’s supposed to be leased at fair market rate. State and federal law require those lands be used ‘for the betterment of the condition of Native Hawaiians and the general public,’” she said, quoting the Hawaii State Admissions Act. “Well, giving our mauna away for $13 a year is hardly benefiting anyone, except the people profiting from it.”
Native Hawaiians are “legally” entitled to 20 percent of all income generated from those lands. That means the astronomy industry pays a total of $2.60 per year to do business on the Hawaiian people’s most sacred site.
“The state, the university, the pro-TMT people keep talking about TMT money. Stopping this telescope has never been about money for us,” Pisciotta said. “But, okay, let’s talk about money, starting with the billions that people have already made on the mauna since 1968. Does even one-percent of it benefit the people of this island?”
When asked how much money is generated on Mauna Kea, she said, “Just to give you a sense, when I was working up there in 2001, telescope time on the Keck for one day was $120,000.”
It adds up quickly. Mauna Kea’s skies offer an almost 365 day viewing year. A conservative estimate suggests that hundreds of millions is spent annually on the mountain. Even if the Keck hasn’t raised its rate since 2001, which is unlikely, $120K per day applied to, let’s say a 350-day schedule, would be close to a billion dollars over the course of 20 years.
And that money stays in the industry, moving between research institutions, foreign and domestic governments and corporations linked to the various enterprises associated with gazing up at the universe. If there is a trickle down from transactions happening at 14,000 feet, it’s miniscule compared to what observatories are charging.
Pisciotta said, “The Hawaiian people and Hawaii’s taxpayers are subsidizing the astronomy industry. People go on about how the TMT will donate a million dollars a year for education. So what? When was the last time anyone got to pay rent based on what they want to pay? Never, that’s when.”
In a place where housing costs are among the highest in the U.S., her commentary is even more relevant when considering the high levels of poverty among Native Hawaiians. While they make up about 20 percent of the population, Hawaiians represent more than 50 percent of the homeless.
But how much astronomers pay to do research on Mauna Kea is only half of the economic picture. The other side is money that doesn’t show up in the public ledger. It’s what Pisciotta calls “the real business of astronomy.” The secondary use of astronomy has other applications, one of which is military. But not in the way people might imagine.
To further clarify, Pisciotta said, “There are military applications to telescopes on the mauna, but you have to understand that for them, it isn’t just about what they’re observing, it’s about how they observe. Military generals don’t go to astronomy conferences to learn about the stars, they go to look at all the component parts of technology. Each piece is patentable. And each piece is sold to the highest bidder.”
That’s what Syrmos meant when he referenced “research and instrumentation development.” Pisciotta said, “He’s talking about potential billions in that secondary use of astronomy’s technology. That’s how far apart we are. To them, it’s about money. For us, Mauna Kea, or the aina, or the land, in general, is where we Hawaiians go to restore our spirit, our wellbeing. Mauna Kea has enabled us, given us the ability to reclaim and practice that spirituality, that truth.”

SECONDARY CHARACTER CHOICE: Harmony Pearce
HEADCANONS
Blaine Devon Anderson was born into what many believed was a loving family. His mother Pam Anderson was a kind and seemingly fearless young woman: despite what her parents and family wanted, she left her first husband– a wild drunk who did not care a bit about her or their two-year-old child at the time. His father Thomas Anderson was a wealthy man who took in Pam and her young son Cooper without any issues, despite what those around him said. It was as if the two only cared about one another. It seemed that way for a long time. So, what changed? One could say that it was Thomas’ sudden promotion at his lucrative job, or having his own son and wanting him to be better than those around him. There was a side to Thomas that believed in being nothing less than great. This was a trait that he did not know would plague his young son.
Blaine is talented, there’s no doubt about it. Many who see him perform on stage just stare in awe. His flair for the theatrics however caused for concern with his family. While his parents pushed for him to continue being creative and perform, his grandparents and other family members pursued their lips and whispered about how Blaine was “not right”. At first, he didn’t understand. How was it that he was “not right” or looked at so differently than his brother. Cooper was dramatic, loved to act, dance, and sing. What was the difference? Well, it seemed to be quite simple to everyone else. Blaine was gay, even as a child, his family noticed. His father, not wanting his son to deal with the trauma the world would have thrown at him if that was true, demanded for Blaine to act manlier and just stopped showing as much support as he used to. At first, this pained the young boy, but he soon got used to it and even began to realize what others were so worried about. Yes, he was gay, and no, it wasn’t because he loved theatre or anything silly like that, but because he was born that way. Despite Blaine understanding this and slowly accepting that part of his identity, he hid it away from his family for a very long time. When he finally did come out to his parents, they didn’t seem as upset as he thought they would, in fact, even his father was accepting– though he didn’t seem too thrilled, but at the time, Blaine didn’t understand why. Nonetheless, he decided that since he was out, he would attend a school dance with another openly gay student from his school. It was fun and Blaine finally felt free! It was the best night of his life from that point and he didn’t want it to end. Alas it did and Blaine sat outside the front steps of his school with his dancing partner. They were flushed, sweaty, their hearts finally not pounding from the excitement of the dance. They waited blissfully for Blaine’s father to pick them up. The happiness and innocence soon drained away as three classmates approached them, circling around them. At the time, Blaine didn’t know how to defend himself, and neither did his friend. They tried, but to no avail. The two boys were left hospitalized, one worse than the other. His friend was left in a coma and Blaine ran away from his old school, never turning back.
Dalton Academy was worlds away from Blaine’s old high school. He didn’t have to worry about homophobes, and he actually fit in. Still, Blaine looked over his shoulder, memories of the attack sparking every so often. An upperclassman noticed and took Blaine under his wing. He helped Blaine by teaching him self defense and how to fight. That wasn’t enough for the young Anderson, however, he needed to see that he could actually win if someone were to try to attack him again. The idea really came after one training session. The night he returned from the session he was flipping through the channels, mindlessly watching TV. He only stopped once a particular movie flashed onto the screen. Fight Club. The idea just popped into his head and there was no taking it away. Blaine soon became the leader of the Dalton Academy Fight Club. With that and soon joining the Warblers, the confidence that Blaine never had before just flew inside of him. He was soon able to help people that he probably would not have been able to before. One person he helped was Kurt Hummel, a lost student who changed Blaine’s life forever.
Blaine’s life was a roller coaster after he met Kurt. The two started dating and Blaine even transferred to McKinley to make Kurt’s senior year the best it can be. Once Kurt graduated and Blaine talked to him about moving to New York, things began to get rocky. The attention was no longer there, it was hard to get into contact with his boyfriend. He was left behind. Thinking that there was no more Kurt and Blaine, the sullen Blaine turned to a mystery boy, hooking up with him. He instantly regretted it, in fact, he flew to New York to tell Kurt what he had done. The two ended up breaking up, leaving Blaine with guilt and depression. Still, he fought for another chance and even proposed once things appeared to be better between them. Of course, it wasn’t that simple. They were moving fast, faster than Kurt’s liking at least. The two broke up once again, leaving Blaine in shambles. He left to ohio again, his tail between his legs and in a dark place again. After dating another and a strange event in an elevator, Blaine and Kurt got back together, getting married right after. At first, things actually seemed to be going fine, far better than when they were dating. They even had a child– with the help of Rachel and Quinn. Blaine was happy.
All good things come to an end. The time together was no longer there. Work and other things seemed to get in the way. Blaine was left on the side lines. He felt lost, confused, angry. When the separation happened, it was as though Blaine’s whole world came falling down, all the color in the world just faded. Of course, he still has to keep a smile for his daughter. It’s been hard for Blaine being alone again. he’s trying to pick himself up again, and hopefully he will.
CONNECTIONS
THOMAS & PAM ANDERSON: Thomas and Pam are Blaine’s parents. While Blaine has a great relationship with his mother, things can be better with his father. The two don’t hate each other, but there are unspoken issues that fester. COOPER ANDERSON (brother): Truly, Blaine’s half brother, but they don’t see it that way. They’re not as close as Blaine would like, but they do talk every now and then. KURT HUMMEL (EX-Husband): Kurt and Blaine separated around October 2018 due to irreconcilable differences. At least that is what it is officially. Kurt was getting too busy and never had time for Blaine anymore, however, there is still love between them through the things they experienced together. They are in the process of sorting out their divorce along with joint custody of their daughter - Serena. She will be two as of July 2019. Kurt hopes they can still be friends for the sake of their daughter, and while Blaine wants to do the same, there is still animosity between them, at least, on Blaine’s side. SERENA HUMMEL-ANDERSON (Daughter): Blaine’s pride and joy, the main reason he didn’t just stay locked in his new apartment once he tried to move on with his life. SAM EVANS (EX-Crush & Best Friend): Sam and Blaine become friends when they are persuaded to run for Senior Class President together. Following that, Sam helps Blaine deal with the latter’s failing relationship with Kurt. It is thanks to Sam that Blaine manages to overcome his guilt regarding Kurt back when they were younger and Blaine cheated on Kurt. And that was what made Blaine fall Sam. He fell for how nice and funny Sam was, so different from Kurt, exactly what he needed at that time. But, Sam was not into him, and they decided to stay just friends. Now, they continue best friends, and always helping one another, no matter what, they are in this together. TINA COHEN-CHANG (Best Friend): Their friendship started almost as he joined Glee Club, but only when the Seniors left that the two of them got closer. They even joined the Cheerios together! But, as Tina started to fall for him, Blaine tried to make her see that there was nothing more than a good friendship between them. Yes, it took them both time until they were close again, but, now, they are good friends. SEBASTIAN SMYTHE (Frenemy): Blaine heard about Sebastian only a couple months after he left Dalton Academy. He was so sure that Dalton wouldn’t be able to find someone as talented as him that when he heard that a guy called Sebastian had transferred and taken his place of Captain, he couldn’t believe it. He needed to meet him! And the truth was that once they met, there was a lot of chemistry, and if it was not for Kurt, maybe they had been more than friends. But, all the chemistry went away when they started to ‘hate’ each other, and have a very complicated friendship that even ended with Blaine in the hospital. Only a few time later they were able to make up, and now, yes, Blaine still has a hard time trusting and believing in Sebastian, but they are friendly. RACHEL BERRY (Best Friend): Rachel was the only person that made Blaine question his sexuality. Maybe it was all the chemistry they had or all the songs they used to sing together, but she was the only one that ever made him think, okay, maybe I am not gay. They even went on a date, they even shared a kiss, but, after that, he was sure that he was 100% gay. Now, they work together on Broadway, but are still waiting for the moment they are able to share the stage, so far, they share the stage on private parties where they continue singing and dancing together. While they used to be close, Blaine closed himself off after the separation from Kurt.

Building Safety Act 2022 – What’s Changed?
The Building Safety Act (BSA) of 2022 is now in effect. This new legislation and a slew of statutory instruments (SIs) and related advice will usher in the most significant regulatory changes to the UK built environment in nearly 40 years. However, even though the BSA received Royal Assent at the end of April 2022, most of its provisions will not take effect for another 12-18 months while secondary legislation is created.
The government's primary legislative response to the Grenfell Tower tragedy was the Building Safety Bill (Bill). The final Bill was published in July 2021 and tabled for debate in Parliament after a pre-legislative review by the DLUHC Committee. The Bill has been in the news multiple times this year due to several contentious modifications and new clauses presented on various topics.
The BSA will coexist with the Fire Safety Act (FSA), signed into law in 2021. Last year, the government rejected an amendment to the Fire Safety Bill that would have protected leaseholders and renters from paying to repair cladding on high-rise apartments. Instead, the government reaffirmed its support for protecting leaseholders from cleanup costs at the time, stating that the Fire Safety Bill was not the appropriate vehicle for doing so.
Who and what does it apply to?
The Act applies to building owners and the built environment business, including clients, designers, and contractors who commission building work and participate in the design and construction process.
The Act focuses on high-risk buildings (HRB), classified as high-rise residential structures (including student housing), hospitals, and care facilities with a height of at least 18 meters or seven stories. Specific regulations relating to the rehabilitation of relevant faults, on the other hand, are only applicable to self-contained structures in England that have at least two homes and are at least 11 meters tall or have at least five floors.
The Act mandates people in charge to show evidence of fire safety procedures and the building's structural safety, and related inspections and maintenance. The Act's powers will be used to create regulations that impose obligations on people who procure, plan, manage, and carry out construction work. These regulations will be enacted through secondary legislation and subject to additional review.
The legislation will directly impact all people with a stake in current and future HRBs, and it is expected to have a considerable impact on standards and expectations in all multi-family buildings.
Summary
After implementing gateway one in August 2021, developers, contractors, and consultants have already had to adapt during the planning stages. However, there is still much that enterprises in the construction industry can do to prepare for the new regime.
The Act, the new regime, and secondary legislation all require monitoring the implementation of new regulations and training of all necessary people on the new processes, obligations, and provisions imposed by the Act, the new regime, and secondary law. Don't hesitate to contact MB Law Ltd's solicitors for advice on what your firm may do and should consider implementing the Act's requirements and prepare for changes to the building safety system.

Uganda Experience
Uganda as a destination? Uganda as a destination! Who is interested in Africa, finds here in a relatively small area (almost) all sceneries of the continent - semiaride savannas, tropical rain forests, highly alpine glacier regions – and hence their fauna and flora, in their biodiversity unique in Africa.
Nowhere in the world, except in Uganda, one finds lions climbing trees. Only here (and in Rwanda) the impressive meeting with the "gentle giants", the last mountain gorillas of our earth, is possible.
During my voluntary activity as an IT advisor in Uganda in spring 2013 I got to know and love this country. I spent my one-week vacation after my application with a NGO which pursues an orphanage, an elementary school and a secondary vocational school - and the whole, like for Uganda not unusual, without electricity. There I also made the acquaintance of the former home child Robert who offers bicycle tours in the surrounding national parks.
Back at home I developed the following ideas: A fotovoltaik plant has to be installed. For the connection with the digital world it needs laptops and money for Internet service provider. I organise a bicycle tour in western Uganda whose revenue serves for the financing of the ideas. Meanwhile the ideas for a successful project could be accomplished. In April, 2014 I flew with some discarded, but operational notebooks again to Uganda and supervised the installation of the fotovoltaik plant. Then again in an voluntary application I trained teachers and students during 3 weeks on the computers.
Then the first bicycle to work took place in August 2014 (and another in February 2015. Here you can find my detailed travel report and here the feedback of participants.
On account of the success more bicycle tours are planned. For luggage transport and flagging participants and in order not to lead lions into temptation in the national parks, a minibus will accompany the tour. It is planned to visit the Semliki national park, to track chimpanzees in the Kibali national park, to make safari trip in Queen Elizabeth Nationalpark and follow mountain gorillas in the Bwindi Impenetrable national park.
However, also getting to know village life is emphasized and contact with municipal organisations like the Mpora Rural Family (http://ugandahomestay.com/), the starting point of the trip, the KAFRED project (Kibale association for Rural and Environmental Development) in Bigodi (http://www.bigodi-tourism.org/6601.html), the Nyundo Valley of Hill Link project (http://n-vhill.hpage.co.in/welcome_35108897.html) and the Byoona Amagara Island Retreat (http://lakebunyonyi.net) will be made.
The next tour: 8 July - 18 August 2019 More infos: htpps://uganda-experience.eu
