Hii I was wondering if you’d write gang when it’s your birthday? I think it’s be really cool since my birthdays the 27th!! (your inbetween pony and Johnny age wise)
the gang on your birthday (request)
pairings: ponyboy x reader, johnny x reader, sodapop x reader, darry x reader, dally x reader, two-bit x reader, steve x reader (separate platonic)
warnings: cussing
authors note: i won’t be posting anything friday to monday, im going camping! sorry about that, happy birthday! i hope you enjoy 💗
word count: 0.8k
PONYBOY CURTIS
pony looks up to you because you’re a bit older than him and probably the best role model out of the gang
as he can’t get you much because he doesn’t have a job and he doesn’t have money, he’ll somehow get you a book and write you a poem or letter
writing things is like his love language, if he gives you a note or writes a poem or a letter for you, he wrote it with his whole heart
he doesn’t really think much about getting you food or bringing you somewhere, it’s more about giving you something he took time to make
JOHNNY CADE
johnny can’t give you much because he doesn’t have money, will probably steal something from a store or restaurant for you
but he’ll talk with you late at night at the lot, feeling sorry he can’t get you much
you appreciate that he risks getting in trouble just so the two of you can talk for longer, doesn’t necessarily do much for your birthday though
instead of giving you a lot of items and money for your birthday, he talks to you a lot throughout the day about how old you are
SODAPOP CURTIS
on your birthday, soda gives you a cute letter and bakes you cupcakes or a small cake only for you
probably arrives at your house and wakes you up just to say happy birthday, a rainbow party hat on his head and a party horn
makes it everyone’s deal that it’s your birthday, takes you to do crazy stuff in restaurants and gets you food for free because ‘it’s your fucking birthday’
also makes you feel like you’re the most special person in the whole world on your birthday, basically gives you nearly everything you want because it’s your day
DARRY CURTIS
darry probably makes you chocolate cake or cupcakes with his ingredients, although whenever you come over, you have chocolate cake, it feels special when you have it on your birthday
because you’re young, he’ll rant about how you should cherish your days, it won’t be soon before all your time is gone and to take advantage of being young and having fun
sometimes his family would go out and get food for him and his brothers birthdays, so he gets you food or a little snack
he’ll get you a letter too, it says something like how you’re a good kid and and you can come to him if you ever need to
DALLAS WINSTON
dally hardly even celebrates his birthday, so if he gets you something or remembers, you’re lucky
he probably swipes you a gift from your favorite shop, he doesn’t care enough to pay for it and is more focused on getting to you than how he got the item
he might get you a letter if your relationship is truly important to him, writing only a few words, believing it’s the thought that matters
tells you that you better appreciate it, if you voice that you don’t, he’ll say something about his parents never getting him anything for his birthdays
TWO-BIT MATHEWS
two-bit tries to make you as annoyed but as happy as you can on your birthday, also making it everyone’s business
tries to get you as much as you can just by telling people ‘oh, yeah, it’s her birthday. how old are you turning again? wow you’re super old!’ even though he’s older than the seniors as a junior
swipes you a ton of random shit, brings you to the drive in just to mess around with some socs
he either babies you or treats you like an adult just to make you annoyed, he’ll do whichever one gets you ticked off, telling you, “soon enough, you’ll be able to drink beer! man, i’m gettin’ old.”
STEVE RANDLE
steve gives you some money so you can get something you want for your birthday
doesn’t really do much for your birthday, he might give you a letter or a note of some sort but very few words
at most, he’ll take the day off to hang out with you on your birthday
or if you really want to you could hang out with him at the DX and take a lot of free stuff, he lets you because it’s your birthday

Can you do gang with reader under anesthesia and she forgets they’re dating <33
𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐟𝐮𝐥 [𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐱 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐚]
𝐚/𝐧 : this is a little messy im so sorry. the idea tho is top tier and if my head wasn't so messy rn i coulda cooked up something great <33
Darry Curtis -
Darry would probably be both amused and concerned. He wouldn’t leave your side at all, and when you finally come to and turn to look at him with the most confused expression ever, he can’t help but chuckle. When you ask who he is, he’d be very calm and patient, speaking to you in the most gentle voice ever and answering all your questions (even the absurd ones). Despite his amusement, he is very glad when the anesthesia starts wearing off and you finally recognise who he is.
“You’re my boyfriend?” Your eyes widen a little in surprise, and you tilt your head, earning a small laugh from Darry in response. He nods, reaching over to brush a loose strand of hair away from your face. “Sure am, darlin’... How’re you feeling?” You nod slowly, still a little in shock, your words still slightly slurred. “Much better now I know that.”
Sodapop Curtis -
Soda wouldn’t know whether to be hurt or amused by your sudden behaviour. When you finally wake up, squinting at him and asking if he’s your “super hot doctor,” he’d be a little stunned for a moment before bursting out into laughter. He will tease you the whole time and find your reaction to figuring out he’s you’re boyfriend far too amusing. He won’t ever let you live this down, that’s for sure.
“Are you my doctor?” Soda freezes at your question, tilting his head slightly, before bursting out into laughter, shaking his head. “No, baby. I’m your boyfriend.” he replies, only laughing harder at the confused expression on your face. “No way,” you slur. “You’re way too good-looking. How’d I pull this off?”
Ponyboy Curtis -
Pony would be totally flustered when you don’t recognise him. He’d try his best to stay calm about it, but the second you ask who he is, he’d get a little worried. He’d do his best to reassure you, trying to patiently explain that he’s you’re boyfriend, not a super young doctor, but you’re disbelief has him stumbling. When the anesthesia does wear off, he’d be so relieved, and he'll probably blush anytime someone brings it up.
“Wait… you’re my boyfriend?” you slur, narrowing your eyes supiciouly at him. “You look pretty young.” Pony swallows heavily, rubbing the back of his neck. “Yeah… I mean, we’re the same age.” You lean a little closer, squinting in disbelief. “You age well then…”
Johnny Cade -
Johnny would handle the situation with nothing but patience and care. When you don’t recognise him at first, he’d be a little hurt, but quickly gets over it when he realises you don’t mean it. He’d sit close beside you, reassuring you that he’s your boyfriend and chuckling every time you deny it.
“You’re really cute,” you mumble, blinking up at him. “Are you my nurse?” Johnny flushes slightly, shaking his head quickly. “No, y/n… I’m your boyfriend.” Your brows furrow, and you lean back, pausing for a moment before shrugging. “Lucky me.”
Dallas Winston -
Dally would be a little caught off guard at first. He’d probably assume your joking and might play along, but when he realises you’re deadly serious, he gets a little defensive and will try to jog your memory. You forgetting he’s your boyfriend is a big blow to his ego. He will tease you about it for the rest of your life, and the second you wake up, he’ll be all smug like he wasn’t freaking out two seconds ago.
“Who’re you?” you slur, looking up at him suspiciously. “You’re not my boyfriend. My boyfriend is way tougher than you.” Dallas raises a brow and chuckles. “Oh yeah? And what do you think I am, some sweet country boy?” You can only stare at him for a moment before shaking your head. “You’re to pretty lookin’ to be tough.” And, for once in his life. Dally is speechless. Pretty? Yeah right… “Damn, doll. They really messed you up, huh?”
Steve Randle -
Steve wouldn’t know whether to be amused or annoyed when you don’t recognise him. He’d probably find the humour in the situation, making a saractic response, but there’s still a petty part of him that’s upset by your lack of recognition. Once the anaesthesia starts wearing off, he’ll be incredibly relieved, checking you’re okay and you feel fine before giving you a hard time (all lighthearted, of course; he can’t be made at you.)
“Are you sure you’re my boyfriend?” You ask, looking him up and down with an incredulous expression. Steve smirks, leaning back a little and crossing his arms. “Yeah, baby. I am. What did you forget about me or something?” “No.” You retort sharply, narrowing your eyes. “My boyfriend just isn’t greasy and covered in car oil.” Steve snorts and shakes his head, grasping your hand gently. “You’re lucky I like you…” he whispers.
Two-bit Mathews -
Two would not be hurt in the slightest. The second you ask who he is, he can’t help but laugh loudly, playing along and cracking jokes. He is entirely unbothered by your confusion and will spend the entire time trying to convince you into believing some wild stories. When you finally do figure out who he is, he'll act all smug about it, teasing you more until the anesthesia finally wears off.
“You’re telling me that you’re my boyfriend?” you ask, words slurred and confused. Two-bit grins widely, crossing his arms and nodding. “You bet, baby. I’m the best you’ve ever had!” You squint, looking a little doubtful. “I don’t know… You seem kinda goofy. My boyfriend is actually funny.” He can’t help but laugh, pressing a hand to his chest, feigning hurt. “Well… If that ain’t a way to treat the man of your dreams, I don’t know what is…”

Greasers with a crush that's super laid back and honestly never bothered but surprisingly can kick ass? Like full on martial arts acrobatics kicking ass. And it's just like the last thing you'd ever expect from them.
Summary: The gang with a badass!reader
Warnings: none
Author's Note: none
PONYBOY has had a crush on you since 3rd grade when you knocked a boy's front teeth out during recess because he tried to look up your skirt. He's always got kind of giggly and happy whenever you were around or being talked about. If there's ever a fight in school he'll only watch it if its you. He loves your carefree, relaxed personality, he thinks it makes it even more chilling when you kick ass.
JOHNNY doesn't like to get involved with people who fight, and everything he's heard about you had been about how you rocked someone last night for screwing you over. It made a pretty bad impression on him to be honest He always tried to steer away from you, but he saw some socs following you and tried to warn you. He was blown away by your fighting, it was almost like a movie. Johnny's totally into how you're so relaxed, trying to avoid fighting but still kicking ass.
SODAPOP loves watching fights, but he says "watching chicks fight" made him feel immoral. That's why he's never heard about you and your ever stretching reputation. He only met you when you helped him ward off some socs. It was almost as if you merely looked their way and they were gone. He was shocked and totally infatuated. He made it known by talking about you in the same giggly voice that Ponyboy would use.
STEVE met you at Buck's. You were sipping on straight alcohol as if it was juice. He was immediately interested but kept his distance. Until, some girl came up to you looking for a fight and you clocked her in a simple sentence. He laughed so loud that you gave him a quizzical look. He takes you out on several dates but he's still and will forever be in love with you personality.
TWO BIT knows all about you, he is just one of those guys who knows everybody. He originally met you at a party. You instantly hit it off and you two had such fun and friendly banter that he always smiles when he thinks of those interactions. He's always trying to take you places you might like, a show, a party whatever. As much as he loves watching your almost show like fighting moves, he really doesn't like the fact that you actually fight, he sees it as something that can only catch up to you in a bad way.
DARRY also doesn't really appreciate you getting in fights, but he still has a big crush on you. If he sees you after or walking home from a fight he'll get all fussy and take care of you with first-aid and drive you home. He loves your laidback personality, how you can still laugh but you also have a stern personality too which he thinks would be a perfect personality to be around Pony and Soda.
DALLAS thinks you're such a badass. He's secretly such a fan girl of you. He tries to get into every party that you go to, just so he can see you. Dally knows that dating you can skyrocket his reputation, but he feels a little odd trying to date you, it feels like he's got a crush on a popular celebrity he'll never achieve. This actually makes him a little insecure, he used to think he could get every girl he wanted some way or another, but now you kind of killed his ego.

saw the outsiders musical last night (7/20/24) and thought i would make a little post about some of my favorite parts!! brody, sky & daryl were out so i saw trevor wayne as pony, josh strobl as johnny & henry julián gendron as two-bit!
there’s a bit after pony gets jumped by the socs where darry and soda are cleaning the blood off his face and when they’re done and have gotten up johnny comes and sits next to him and takes out a rag and starts also cleaning pony’s face <3 it’s so so sweet
henry does a couple little opt-ups as two-bit in both grease got a hold and hoods turned heroes where i was like “ooh!” i adore daryl tofa so i was a little disappointed when i found out i wouldn’t be able to see him but henry was SO fantastic!! such a talented dancer and you could tell he was having so much fun with the character! such a standout for me.
was deeply impressed by how many items were successfully thrown and caught in grease got a hold like holy shit dude
the LIGHTING in great expectations has pony pointing his flashlight at darrel on “darrel was on his way up in the world” & johnny on “johnny has no kind of chance in this world” and then as the verse goes on he points it at all of the greasers standing all over the stage and the light lingers on them for the rest of the song it’s so fucking cool-looking! and during the chorus the stage starts to look like a starry sky which is a choice they bring back for the little great expectations reprise at the end of far away from tulsa.
the moment where pony & johnny do their little cool guy walks over to cherry and marcia at the drive-in with their popped collars was so precious to me
i ADORE cherry valance and i ADORE emma’s take on her!! her little convo with pony at the drive-in was really sweet and i loved that they chose not to make the dynamic feel like a crush on ponyboy’s part it was such a nice moment of two people finding and genuinely understanding each other so deeply <3
lighting sound & everything was so next-level during the fountain scene-bob’s death like i don’t even think i can describe it it was so much and so crisp and so visceral in the absolute best way
staging for run run brother was SO cool — there’s a part at the end where they use the tires and boards from the set to make two platforms that the other actors can roll them back and forth while johnny is on one and pony on the other and they roll them away from each other and they are both reaching out so desperately towards each other its so fantastic
i also really liked the part in run run brother where dally gives pony his jacket like he just wordlessly put it on for him it’s so nice
lighting & subsequent blackout at the end of run run brother as pb&j are in the air after jumping off the “train” was ELITE
pony is holding johnny’s switchblade during death’s at my door and at the end of the song johnny reaches out to take it from him but he doesn’t pull away so he’s just holding pony’s hand and then he puts his other hand over pony’s too and they sit there like that until the lights go down <3
LOVED what they’ve done with darry’s character here!! i know people have some nitpicky things with it but he is such a fascinating character and i’m so glad that the musical theater medium was able to do so much with him that the limited pov of the novel couldn’t — brent comer plays darry so so well and my heart aches for him like fuck dude he cares about his brothers so fucking much and he’s doing his best and he’s so so tired :((( give him a break!!
jason schmidt’s voice is SO fantastic holy fuck throwing in the towel was GORGEOUS!! and the little bit at the end where soda hugs darry and it looks like he maybe kisses him on the head a little is so darling <3
the entire “do i look like julie andrews?” scene is so fucking good… genuinely made me laugh out loud. “fine, paul newman, then!” “…no shit?” is so fantastic and johnny’s little “she is pretty as hell :)” about cherry is adorable. and ofc the “goldilocks and her ugly sister” line is fucking great
the way that johnny perks up when he hears “say hey to johnny for us :)” in soda’s letter is so cute
the church fire scene is perhaps the coolest shit i have ever seen onstage
ponyboy is crying so hard after johnny dies that has to sit down on the floor of the hospital room and soda sits behind him and just holds him <3
ponyboy is like actively crying as he narrates dally’s death its so fucking heartbreaking. i liked that they drew the parallels between the train crashes in order to make dally’s death meaningful despite its departure from the book. and the detail about the train derailing when it hit him was wonderfully written.
there is a scene where ponyboy is like inconsolable sitting on the living room floor with his head in his arms after johnny and dally die and cherry comes by the house because she has been volunteering at the hospital and no one came to pick up johnny’s clothes after he died and she thought ponyboy should have them and she tells him there’s a letter in the pocket addressed to him and after she leaves he just sits there for a while and when he finally moves he picks up johnny’s jean jacket and fucking like hugs it and buries his face in it and it’s so so so heartbreaking and soda has to come over and start reading the letter to him before johnny appears and starts singing stay gold <3
johnny starts SR at the beginning of stay gold while pony is sitting on the car at SL but he is slowly moving closer to pony as the song goes on and right before they start singing in harmony johnny sits down next to him <3 <3 <3
josh’s stay gold made me CRY!! especially him and trevor singing “i have known a love that many never know / and that love lives on no matter where i go” holy shit. their voices blend together so beautifully
overall i fucking ADORED trevor’s ponyboy!! he embodies the role so so well and has such a fourteen-year-old boy vibe when he’s onstage that i definitely did not expect from an actor in his twenties! i’ve heard that his pony is a little more emotional than brody’s & josh’s and that was a choice i really really vibed with!! and his voice was like jaw-dropping, what a talent!!
stagedoor afterwards was so so wonderful! i made drawings for the entire cast and everyone was so so nice and seemed to really like them! the ensemble & understudies especially seemed really thrilled that i had made something for them
henry in particular was so so sweet and seemed like he couldn’t believe that i had drawn him! he was like “is this me for real?” and someone (i think it was trevor) told him to look at the back where i had written his name and a little note and he was really excited about it!! he actually was like “this is awesome i have to go inside and give this to my mom right now so i don’t lose it” and his family was right inside the stagedoor and he pointed me out to them and they were so excited! he gave me a hug too it was really nice :)
trevor was also really excited and was like “this is a drawing of me for real? not brody?” and he was so happy when he turned it around and saw his name <3
i gave melody and sarahgrace copies of the same drawing of both of them and as soon as i gave it to melody she immediately looked around to find sarahgrace and show it to her (she was still inside but it was very cute) and then she told me they were going to put it on the wall in their dressing room!!
sarahgrace was like “omg you even drew my bracelet!” and was excited when i pointed out the detail i put in for the pattern on her dress!
trevor yelled across the sidewalk to tell josh to stop talking to his (trevor’s) mom as a joke lmfao
everyone except jason & kevin c came out to stagedoor and they were all so so sweet!! got photos with most of them and they all signed my copy of the book!! overall such a fucking fantastic experience! the drawings were a lot of work but it was so nice to see the looks on the cast’s faces when they saw them!!

Darry Curtis General Headcanons
Here he is! Darry needs a break for real though. Let this man take a nap or something.
Warnings: Spoilers, Angst, Mentions of blood if your squeamish about that stuff
When Pony and Johnny ran Darry felt that everything was his fault. In his eyes, since he smacked Pony and made him run away he was the partial cause of Bob’s death and eventually Johnny and Dally’s. It took a while before he was convinced otherwise.
He is one of the youngest guys in the roofing group. Most of them are 30-45 year old guys. Their names are Bart, Eddie, Jeff, and Rich. There are also 2 sixteen year olds who work occasionally and are more of interns of sorts. Darry likes the guys he works with, he just doesn’t like his job so much. It can throw him off that the older guys are talking to him since they call him kid and son most of the time. But they’re really nice.
He gets extremely sunburned when he’s roofing houses so Soda and Ponyboy bought him some sunscreen. He just about fell to his knees. It meant a lot to him that they listened to him whenever he mentioned things at dinner.
I stand with the headcanon that Soda accidentally named Ponyboy but I would also like to add to it. When a 3 year old Soda was running around saying that his mom was going to have a pony, a 6 year old Darry told his dad that would be a cool name to have. Which is when the lightbulb went off in Mr. Curtis’ mind. Darry does not remember this.
Him and Paul were best friends from their childhood and Paul really wanted to be there for Darry. But they were pulled apart and also under pressure from Paul’s parents. They felt he would be held back if he tried to help Darry out. So they eventually put it in his head that Darry was what he would become if he didn’t succeed.
The Curtis family was/is good friends with the Matthews so Darry and Two-Bit knew each other ever since they were little. Their duo was kind of the original gang. Paul was also friends with them and would join them when he could. But his parents didn’t like him being with “The lower class”. Two-Bit was always there for him and ofc still is.
Continuing with the Darry and Two-Bit friendship, on days when Darry has work off Two-Bit will drag him over to Buck’s or another party just to see Darry lose those years of tiredness.
Darry loves Elvis like the rest of the Greasers but there is one band that he likes the songs a lot of but will never show it. He really likes The Beach Boys. He heard it for the first time when he was 16 at Paul’s. His older sister was playing some of their songs as they were relatively new and he discreetly asked who they were. The only person who knows is Two-Bit as he caught him once jamming out to their songs. (If we are allowing my ocs in this, Rosemary also knows)
His least favorite chore to do is mowing the lawn. So he usually forces Soda to do it. He hates how the grass always ends up on him no matter what he does. And it’s really annoying to try and wash out of clothes or off the side of the house.
He has several times where he will be in the middle of roofing houses and just get lost in thought about everything that has happened that led him here and end up just staring at the ground. Until Eddie clanks a tool and tells him to “get his head out of the clouds”. Which is what he started to tell Pony.
He hit his main growth spurt and everything when he was 13 and ended up just looking like an almost grown man. But his voice didn’t deepen till he was about 14-15. It made him self-conscious.
He wanted to buy a present for Pony and Soda for their birthdays, so he decided to try babysitting for a while. He was pretty good at it and ended up making bank. Two-Bit also joined him so he could make some cash.
He has the most prominent southern accent. He’s still understandable but whenever he’s upset it really comes out.
He broke his arm when he fell off a roof. He apologized to the couple whose house he and Bart were working on and they told him it was no problem. The wife was actually a nurse at the hospital so she quickly told him he needed to get over there and she would pay for it all. Bart finished the job and told him he needed to rest and he better not see him back to roofing until he’s healed up. Pony and Soda helped him out a lot with everyday things and Pony didn’t tell him but he held a garage sale of sorts to help pay for stuff.
Once Pony and Soda move out Darry would probably take up coaching at the school. He remembered how much he does actually enjoy working with kids and athletics. He also holds some training sessions for newer football players and such.
The night Pony ran away Darry sat on his knees at the door, tears streaming down his face but with just a stunned expression on his face. No sounds besides his heavy breathing. Soda called Two-Bit and Steve over while he was also sobbing. No one could get through to Darry. But after 2 hours of him like this he slowly got up and went to his room. And all they could hear was yelling, things being thrown, and then loud sobbing afterwards.
He hated how violent he acted after Pony left. He never hurt anyone else but he would throw things around his room. Then just sob afterwards because it was because of his anger that Pony was gone. And after he found out about the murder he just sat on the couch and stared at the ground.
While Pony was gone, he would flinch whenever anyone would touch him. He never went out of his way to hug anyone or anything. Sometimes the roofing guys would pat him on the back and he would have to stop himself from snapping at them.
He would also be walking around and suddenly think he saw Pony or Johnny. But it would always just be some random kid or a weirdly shaped tree. It was mainly from his lack of sleep.
When he was in school a lot of girls had crushes on him. But he never really was interested in anyone. He dated one or two people but overall he was more focused on school itself. It was also because he thought the main reason anyone was interested in him was because he was popular instead of him as a person.
He doesn’t really like his name. Not just because it is his dad’s but he thinks it makes him sound old.
He has a really high pain tolerance but also gets injured a lot. Smaller ones. Like he’ll cut his knee open and be bleeding a lot and just say something like “I’ll just wait for it to stop on its own.” (If we are counting ocs Rosemary always scolds him whenever he does this and cleans and bandages him up. She also tells him to be more careful.)
He was always an older brother of sorts to Dallas whenever he first came to Tulsa. But they grew apart once Dallas got back into being a JD. Darry didn't like the example Dally was setting for Pony and Soda. But he would still help him out when needed. They eventually became closer again once the Curtis parents died and Dally would help Darry out with Ponyboy.

my baby, my baby (you’re my baby)
Summary: darry visits his dad and rants. he also cries. </3
Darrel loves each of his kids (and stray kids) equally. No matter how hard Steve tries to pry it out of him, he does not have a favorite.
He loved when Johnny came over for dinner and he’s able to convince the kid to spend the night, he loves when Soda and Steve came home with new stories about their day at the rodeo, he loved when he came home from work and Ponyboy would rush to tell him about the book he’d just finished, he loved attending Ace’s recitals, and he loved when Dally comes over just to sit in their company when he could’ve been causing a ruckus around town instead.
He is, however, a little more partial to his first born than the others. No hard feelings, he still loves his other kids, but Darrel Junior was his first child; the reason he’s the father he was a father, so he’s always going to have a soft spot for him no matter what he does.
Besides, it doesn’t hurt that Junior is the only one who visits him and Karen on a normal basis. Darrel huffs to himself has he sits on top of his grave. Since dying, he’s somehow gained an internal watch, so he knows it’s 3:47pm exactly; when Junior visits it’s usually around 4pm.
Junior’s early today though, Darrel thinks to himself hearing footsteps approaching. There’s not much else he can do but wait for Darry who bends in front of Karen’s grave and leaves her a flower first. If he were alive, Darrel’s heart might’ve clenched. Karen’ll be sorry he missed Darry, but she’s watching over the other boys right now; it’s alright though, Darrel will fill her in when she gets back.
Darry’s head was bent too low for him to get a good look at first, but now that he’s turned towards Darrel’s grave he can see the tears streaming down his face. If he still needed oxygen, he’s sure his breath would’ve caught.
“Hi, Dad,” Darry’s says taking a seat on the ground. Darrel can’t help but notice he’s got his knees pulled to him like he’s trying to protect himself.
He frowns and pulls himself to join Darry on the ground. Hey, kiddo. What’s the matter? He knows Darry can’t hear him, he learnt that the hard way a while ago now, it still brings him a little bit of comfort though.
Darry sniffs. “I don’t know how you and Mama did it.”
Did what?
Darry gestures in the air, “This parenting shit- stuff, I meant stuff, sorry.” Darrel laughs a little; his baby’s twenty years old and still apologizing for cussing.
If he’s honest, Darrel isn’t even sure how he did it. It was in large part thanks to Karen, of course, she kept him steady whenever he floundered. Junior also helped too, though. He doesn’t like to throw the word around, but for all intent and purposes, Darry was a perfect first child.
“The other night,” Darry continues. “I guess Ponyboy had a nightmare or something, I don’t know, but I heard him asking Soda why I hated him.” His voice breaks at the end and Darrel is forced to watch as Junior sobs into his arms.
It’s futile he knows, but after a moment of watching he hugs Darry anyway. Almost as if he could actually feel the hug, Darry stiffens before looking up and staring straight through Darrel. Spooky, he thinks.
“I don’t hate him, I promise.”
I know you don’t.
“I love him a lot, but it’s like he purposely grates my nerves. He knows I’m stretched thin and it’s like he’s trying to see how long until I snap. And that’s not fair! I don’t know how to be a parent, I don’t how to raise a fourteen year old!”
Darrel isn’t sure when it happened, but a flip was switched as Junior started to rant angrily. He doesn’t leave the cemetery too often, but when he did he noticed the two often riled each other up; it was never one sided. He can’t exactly correct Darry though so he hums instead.
“Daddy, you know when you first, um,” he winces. “left, Pony didn’t talk for a week. Okay, that’s fine, I can handle that, but he stopped eating too. I tell him, ‘Pony you have to eat something, you can only go so long without eating before you die from starvation.’ And I kid you not the only thing he says to me that entire week was ‘You’re not dad, Darrel, you can’t tell me what to do’. I never said I was! I just didn’t want him to die too, is that so bad?”
Darrel blinks. That was a lot, and he’s not really sure where to start processing it. He sighs airlessly, It’s not bad. You were worried about him and had his best interests at heart I get it. Is he eating now at least?
Just as fast as it came, the anger seems to leave Darry all once as he lies back on the grass with his hands over his face. “I don’t even know if he eating for real, yet. I’m not home enough to know; I eat my breakfast in the dark, go to work, come home when everyone’s asleep, eat dinner in the dark, go to bed, rinse and repeat.”
Darrel winces. Even he didn’t work those kind of hours and could’ve handled them. Darrel liked his solitude every now and then, but not Darry. No, not his Junior; his Junior is a people’s person through and through, there’s a reason he won boy of his year.
Rubbing Darry’s ankle he says, I know you’re working your ass off, but I’m real proud of you, baby. I know it don’t look it now, but it will all pay off.
There’s a pause, and if he wants he could trick himself into believing his boy heard him, before Darry says something so quietly Darrel has to strain to hear. “I know it’s wrong, and I try not to, but sometimes I wish I let them get taken. I love them, really I do! But Soda wants to drop out of school and Pony hates me and he thinks I hate him back, and don’t even get me started on Dallas— I don’t think there’s a been a weekend where we haven’t haven’t argued or he hasn’t been in jail. I’m trying my best, but I keep screwing up and that’s not fair on them.”
He breaks into sobs again, this time so strong his whole body shakes. Darrel can’t even do anything to comfort him, his stupid ghost body isn’t corporeal. The best thing he can do is stroke Darry’s hair and hope he knows his daddy is here for him. He hates seeing his kids cry and he’s never been more angry that he’s dead.
Between sobs Darry says, “I wanna leave. So I can’t mess anything else up.”
No, sir. You’ll get the hang of things soon enough, it’s a new adjustment and y’all’ve just gotta find your footing. I know it’s hard, but y’all will find it.
“I’m not gonna,” Darry protests. His baby is red in the face and breathing real hard, but Darrel is thankful is eyes are finally starting to dry. “I want to leave but I don’t want to leave them.”
So, what are you gonna do, Junior?
“I don’t know,” he answers. “I wish you were here, you’d know what to do.”
Darrel winces. Actually now-
“Well, never mind. You wouldn’t be dumb enough to get in this situation to begin with.”
Harsh, but he’s probably right. Darrel watches as the gears turn in Junior’s head. He loves all his kids equally, yes. But Darry’s always been his favorite to watch because when he isn’t focused he wears every emotion on his face. He can see exactly when Darrys made his mind up long before he stands up and dusts off his pants.
“You drive a hard bargain, but fine I’ll stay.” Darrel barks out a laugh as Darry checks his watch. It’s 6:29pm, he’s been here for nearly three hours. “Shit, I said I’d make dinner.” Somehow, when Darry looks up he’s staring Darrel in the eyes. “I’ve gotta run, but I’ll see you later.”
Alright, stay tough out there. I love you, kiddo.
Darry’s eyes widen a minuscule amount and he grins as he ducks his head. “Yeah, I love you too, daddy.”

Why wouldn’t Dally die if only Ponyboy had died, as you mentioned in one of your previous posts?
(Not in a “you’re incorrect” way but in a “I like reading your exposition pieces and this intrigued me, also I wholeheartedly agree but don’t have the words to explain it myself” way)
Hehehehe thank you for this ask anon! Anyone who wants context can find the post that anon is referring to here.
Let's get right into it. Why wouldn't Dally die if only Ponyboy died? Well, quite simply, because Ponyboy isn't Johnny, and thus is not put on a pedestal by Dallas the way Johnny is.
That isn’t to say Dally doesn’t care about Ponyboy. He very clearly does, Ponyboy just doesn’t notice it much, probably because Dally’s care for Ponyboy manifests in the complete opposite manner of his care for Johnny.
Dally’s soft side is reserved for Johnny and Johnny alone, as we’re shown over and over throughout the book. In moments when they’re alone or almost alone we get glimpses of this, from letting Johnny sleep in his room at Bucks, to hiding Johnny without question, to speaking to him in a ‘low pleading voice’ when he’s trying to reason with him. He drags Johnny out of a burning building, and cries over his death 1. Dally knows Johnny is already well aware of all the worst brutalities of the world- he doesn’t need to toughen up or get wise because he already is. What Johnny needs is a reason to live, and to experience some good in the world so he doesn’t forget good things exist and end up cold and mean and jaded like Dallas. To Dally, Johnny’s whole existence is his last true belief that goodness exists in the world, more specifically that good exists in humanity. Poor little beat up tough greaser Johnny Cade is proof that the entirety of the world isn’t evil 100% of the time, because he has every reason to be horrible at every minute of every day and he isn't. Johnny is Dally’s reason to live, because he gives him hope. Johnny has nothing, has grown up being nothing, lives life being looked down on and beaten and he is still not a monster. To Dally, I think this makes Johnny the most important thing in the world. He loves him immensely. Keeping Johnny Johnny is probably the thing he strives to ensure the most. In his own way, Dally is trying to keep Johnny 'gold'. When Johnny dies and Dally starts to unravel, this outlook is the first thing he starts to question and lament. 2. Before, Dally thought the worst thing in the world would be Johnny turning hard and mean. Then Johnny dies, and he realises THIS is the worst thing in the world, because his world is no longer his world anymore. It would have been better, Dallas thinks, for the goodness in Johnny to be snuffed out but Johnny himself to still be here, instead of Johnny being gone altogether, but by then it’s too late. Johnny is gone, the last of Dally’s faith in humanity is gone, and he has no illusions about the world and nothing left to live for. Without Johnny, Dally literally can’t exist.
Dally’s relationship with Ponyboy is very different. He’s protective sure- he gives Pony his jacket, something I’ve written about as a symbol of Dally’s protectiveness before. He doesn't tell Soda where Pony is hiding out, and part of that was because Pony asked him not to. He looks out for Pony, would back him in a rumble like he would any of the gang, and probably threaten a soc or two on his behalf. But Dally does not view Ponyboy a symbol of goodness and humanity the way he views Johnny, so he has no reason to be soft with him in the same way. In fact, I think Dally probably views Pony as somewhat coddled. Ponyboy has Soda to be soft with him and Darry to parent him. Dally doesn’t need to be soft with Ponyboy, because there are others who are, and because Pony’s home life is so much easier than Johnny’s has ever been. I think in Dally’s mind, the best way for him to protect Ponyboy IS to get him to toughen up, get him to learn to look out for himself and get his head out of the clouds. Ponyboy mentions at the drive in, when Johnny tells Dally to leave Cherry alone, that Dally would have hit alone else in the gang who said that- including Pony himself. 3. I don’t think he was wrong. I think Dally might have absolutely taken a swing at Ponyboy if he’d mouthed off instead of Johnny, and if he didn’t it would probably only be because Dally is wary of Darry. Dally couldn’t ever hit Johnny and not only because he’s the pet, but Dally absolutely could and would hit Ponyboy. Probably not hard, not a lot, and probably not often, but Dally was a hood in the 60s. He canonically jumps children, and him and his friend Tim Shepard break each others ribs and grin about it. The gang play fight and tussle. Darry almost broke Steve’s jaw after the all brawn and no brain comment- that was no play fight, it was getting even. If Dally ever felt the need to get even with Ponyboy, I think he’d absolutely hit him. It’s how the gang settles conflicts, physical violence as a punishment was way more common and even acceptable in the 60s, and is simply a normal part of the world Pony and Dally exist in. Point is, Dally cares for Ponyboy, and he’s protective over him because he's incredibly loyal and because Pony is the baby of the gang, but he doesn’t represent humanity or goodness to him the way Johnny does. He’s not Dally’s reason to keep living. To Dally, Ponyboy represent childish naivety, the kind that gets you killed or gets beat out of you at an early age. Since he doesn’t want Pony to die, he’s basically doing his best to beat said naivety out of him without completely driving Pony away.
All this to say, if Pony died instead of Johnny, Dallas would be able to handle it. I think he’d almost expect it in a way. Sure, he’d be devastated, as would the rest of the gang, but Dally is resilient. We don’t get much of his backstory, but clearly he has survived more than a few hardships in his short life. If Pony died he might get harsher, meaner, and colder than ever, but he would survive. He’d try and support Darry and Soda in their grief, would probably jump a few innocents to vent his feelings, but if it was just Pony that had died, Dally could and would theoretically survive the novel.
Of course, based on my last post, we know that had Pony died, JOHNNY would have broken down and completed a version of Dally’s final arc, and thus whether Johnny or Pony die in the fire Dally is doomed, because in both scenarios Johnny dies, and Dally loses his reason to keep living.
It’s kind of the hallmark of him as a character: like Johnny, he’s been dead since the beginning, doomed from the first page. If Dally doesn't die, there's no story in the first place.
It's always going to be a tragedy.
Whirling suddenly, he slammed back against the wall. His face contracted in agony, and sweat streamed down his face. "Damnit, Johnny…" he begged, slamming one fist against the wall, hammering it to make it obey his will. "Oh, damnit, Johnny, don't die, please don't die…"
"I was crazy, you know that, kid? Crazy for wantin' Johnny to stay outa trouble, for not wantin' him to get hard. If he'd been like me he'd never have been in this mess. If he'd got smart like me he'd never have run into that church. That's what you get for helpin' people. Editorials in the paper and a lot of trouble.... You'd better wise up, Pony... you get tough like me and you don't get hurt. You look out for yourself and nothin' can touch you..."
“Dallas scowled for a second. If it had been me, or Two-Bit, or Soda or Steve, or anyone but Johnny, Dally would have flattened him without a moment's hesitation. You just didn't tell Dally Winston what to do. One time, in a dime store, a guy told him to move over at the candy counter. Dally had turned around and belted him so hard it knocked a tooth loose. A complete stranger, too. But Johnny was the gang's pet, and Dally just couldn't hit him.”

I Explain the Context for the songs in The Outsiders Musical
Spoilers for the Musical under cut! I was lucky enough to see the show in person so now that the album is out I decided to provide context for the songs so people listening to the album can know where in the story each one takes place/what is happening on stage during. Also some fun tidbits sprinkled in because this show is really so amazing I can not praise it enough.
Tulsa '67:
The self-explained exposition song. We get the intro being the first line of the book and then we get the song as out introductions to the characters. One thing that is interesting is that there's a projector screen on stage and for this song Pony sits in front of the screen and speaks to the audience while the other characters are behind the screen. Acting out little scenes to show their personality while Ponyboy narrates and at the end of the song the screen lifts up to show a clear view of the stage. It's also right before Ponyboy gets jumped.
Grease Got a Hold:
Right after Ponyboy gets jumped. Like the song says in this version of the story a greaser isn't just something you are born into it's something you "earn" by being beaten down on by the socs. It shows the differences in each character most notably Darry and Dally because Darry hates the idea of Pony being stuck as a greaser, presumably because he wants more for his little brother, while Dally sees being a Greaser as something to be proud of. Presumably the first time Ponyboy gets to grease his hair (this song was also performed on the Today show and I highly recommend looking up the performance it's so good, it should be available on the today show website along with the other songs performed that day)
Runs in the Family:
Darry gets a song! After the previous song we cut to Darry in the Curtis home reflecting on where he was going in life versus where he ended up. In the musical the fact that Darry would be a soc without the gang is played up a lot more. The emphasize Darry's friendship with Paul and their history seems to go a lot deeper than just football buddies. Paul mentions gifting Darry a madras shirt and Darry being over at his house. The rest of the gang piles in at the end of the song.
Great Expectations:
The titular 'I want' song in any musical. The night after getting jumped Ponyboy tells Soda about reading great expectations and after Soda bids him goodnight he starts singing. When he mentions Darry and Johnny the actors come on stage. And at the end of the song the chorus of overlapping voices is the whole gang on the outskirts of the stage looking down/at Pony while Ponyboy sings out to the audience. (This song was also performed on the Today show)
Friday at the Drive-In:
The Soc introduction song. I think an important thing to note is that while the greasers dancing is far more rough and tumble. Jumping around and over each other, spinning and getting out nervous energy. The socs are far more reserved in their movements. They are still dancing around with spins and flips but this scene features a lot of partner dancing that's more self contained than the greasers who jump all around the stage.
I Could Talk To You All Night:
After Johnny tells Dally off/Dally leaves. Ponyboy and Cherry go to the concessions stand together. While in line Ponyboy tells her about Johnny getting jumped to which Cherry tries to defend Bob as Ponyboy already knows it was her boyfriend who beat Johnny up. Her defending him is half hearted though when Pony insists Johnny didn't do anything, he mentions reading Great Expectations to her and she tells him how Pip gets a happy ending before they start this song. It carries the story forward up until the end of the movie/the scene where they try to walk the girls home only for Bob and the socs to stop him. Also, in the musical Cherry does not go with Bob and instead breaks up with him right then and there because she's tired of all the fighting.
Runs in the Family(Reprise):
Ponyboy and Johnny make it to the Curtis house and instead of falling asleep at the lot it's stated that Ponyboy just spent so long talking to Cherry that that was why he was late for curfew. He acts nonchalant about it and Darry bursts into the reprise. There's also a scene here where Darry goes to advance on Johnny only for Soda to step between him(I think this was meant to be a moment where Darry is just lashing out because he's under a lot of stress as a guardian and Johnny is there but it hurts my heart a little to think Johnny was scared in that moment as he backs up and ducks away before Soda steps in front of him) And after the slap Ponyboy freezes until Johnny runs over and tells him they gotta get out of there.
Far Away From Tulsa:
After getting hit is when the two wind up at the park. Their conversation in the book about a life outside of Tulsa is now taking place after Darry has hit Ponyboy which makes his desire to find a place without worries all the more real. Johnny and Pony have this beautiful moment on stage together where they look out to the audience together and imagine a life where they can do and be whoever they want. Which makes it hurt all the more that right after they sing all their desires for a better life is when Bob and the rest of the socs show up.
Run Run Brother:
The two make it to Buck's after the stabbing of Bob where they ask for Dally. It's worth mentioning that Dally straight up mentions his willingness to die for Pony and Johnny, and that he thinks of the two of them as brothers, though I can not remember if this happens here or after 'Grease Got A Hold'. After the first bit of the song the scene shifts from Buck's to Pony and Johnny running to the train/hiding from the workers as they make their way to Windrixville. There's also a line in the beginning when Pony says 'when I came to there was Johnny with his knife' this is important and I'll explain in 'Little Brother.' I also really like the detail of before, during 'Grease Got a Hold', 'you're a greaser now and you ain't going back' was said as a proud statement and now when the chorus sings it it sounds sad and almost like a death sentence.
Justice for Tulsa:
We cut back to Tulsa after the boys escape. The cops line up the socs on the stage as they call for justice now that one of their own has been murdered. When Cherry speaks she is doing it at the vigil the soc's are holding for Bob before Randy approaches her. He's organizing a hunting party against the greasers. It's worth mentioning that when Cherry speaks against him Marcia tries to go to her side only for the other soc girl in the show(Bev) to hold her back. Cherry leaves alone and once she's gone Marcia pick up a flashlight, which serves as the symbol for the socs hunting down the greasers with no mercy during this scene. Where in the book Dally mentions Two-Bit getting jumped during this song we see it happen. The socs jump him and Bev holds a lit cigarette to his cheek while the guys hold him down(in the live version of this song we hear Two-Bit's scream) It's worth mentioning that Randy does not get a redemption in this version, in fact, outside of Cherry the socs are pretty much painted at the bad guys with her as the one exception. Even though we get Randy's emotions with 'this can't be real, he can't be gone' rather than feeling sadness over his friend's death for too long Randy switches to anger. Cherry's role as such has been adapted to be a mix of her and Randy from the book in terms of story beats.
Death's At My Door:
The boy's are in the church, as far as I can recall this was after they cut their hair and I believe it was meant to be implied that a day or two has passed since Bob's death. Though if this is before or after Pony read the poem I no longer remember. The two boys are relying on each other in this scene as they reflect on how nothing is gonna be the same again what with their ability to go home taken away unless they want Johnny to be thrown in jail. Something I forgot to mention before is that Pony blames himself for his parents death. In the musical he say that on Darry's birthday he was supposed to pick up a special frosting for his brother's cake from a bakery his mother liked. But because he forgot his parents had to go out of their way to go and get it and thus were hit by the train because they had to go over the tracks. He tells Cherry before 'I Could Talk To You For Hours' that if he had just remembered his parents would still be alive. Which is why in this song he claims death follows him because he believes his parent's would still be alive if he had remembered to pick up the frosting, and that Bob would still be alive if he hadn't run out of the house/if Johnny didn't need to protect him.
Throwing in the Towel:
We cut back to Darry and Soda after the boys have been missing for a few days. Darry finally breaks down to Soda all the pressure he's under and how he feels like his brother's would be better off without him. He admits how much he thinks this is all his fault for being too hard on Pony and causing him to storm off after hitting him. During this scene while Soda and Darry are singing Ponyboy can be seen at the back on the stage watching them, and during the last chorus of the song 'this it the darkest hour of the darkest night' his voice joins his brothers. (This song was also performed on the Today Show and you should go watch it)
Soda's Letter:
Back in the church now right after Dally gets there after greeting Pony and Johnny he hands over the letter for Pony to read. Ponyboy reads it at the front of the stage while Soda's actor sing behind him/looking at him. Pretty much unchanged in terms of what Soda's letter gives to the story/when it given/read. The final "Ponyboy this house ain't a home without you" is sung by Darry who makes his way onto stage when Soda mentions him in the letter and we see him behind Ponyboy all but begging his brother to come home in this song.
Hoods Turned Heroes:
This is the fire song. We see Pony, Dally and Johnny in the church, I saw Pony light the cigarette and toss it behind him. I saw the flames go up and a terrified Ponyboy going "it's my fault" and then we cut to Two-Bit, grabbing the paper and beginning this song. We see a somewhat split stage in terms of spacing, the greasers back in Tulsa on one side, passing the newspaper between them as they read it, and we see Pony and Johnny in the middle saving the kids from the church. The scene is actually so creatively done and I adore it, outside of the fire they have two actors hold up a blanket and use shadows to show Pony and Johnny pulling kids from the fire since there are no child actors in this production. Interlaced with the puppetry of the saving kids we see Johnny and Pony sliding out from under the blanket and jump around beams that are held up by other actors while the paper is being read. All ending with Dally going in after Johnny. The scene changes to Dally holding Johnny, who's been changed into a hospital gown, and Dally gently lays him on the hospital bed when the song ends.
Hopeless War:
Before the rumble Pony does not leave the hospital. He stays there watching Johnny until Cherry comes in. She looks at Johnny, asking after his health, before turning to Pony and begging him not to fight. But if you recall earlier, as far as the musical is concerned the fire was set by Ponyboy's cigarette(sidenote: I think it'd be cool if every night they rotated who lights the cigarette and throws it and just switch Pony's line from "it's my fault" to "it's our fault" but I only saw the show once so I assume it's the same every time for who lights the fire even though it the book and movie we don't know for sure) So Pony can't listen to Cherry, even though in this scene she's taking the place of Pony's discussion with Randy in the book about the fight not making areal difference, because he sees this as his only chance to try and do something for Johnny since he can't do much else but watch over him in the hospital.
Trouble:
We cut to directly after Pony's discussion with Cherry. The greasers have their war cry of trouble brewing as everyone prepares for the rumble. While Ponyboy gets ready Darry comes up and begs him not to fight. If you recall during "Grease Got a Hold" Darry says how Pony "better know what you're fighting for" But he still doesn't want his brother to have to fight. But by this point Pony had his reason for fighting and he's the one to rally the gang with the call of "Do it for Johnny!" right before the socs roll up. Dally does say “do it for Johnny” at the beginning of the song but it’s Ponyboy who uses it as a war cry. Dally also has a moment where he calls out Darry for being on the greasers side when he was so against being a greaser before, but Darry looks at him and says confidently "once a greaser always a greaser". Paul has a moment with Darry where he calls him out for wanting to be a soc but Darry shuts him right down and the rumble is on.
Little Brother:
Right after the rumble the entire gang heads over to see Johnny, yes, the entire gang. Not just Pony and Dally everyone gathers around him and tells him about beating the socs. They watch as Johnny tells Pony to stay gold and they all break down when he passes, Dally runs out before anyone can stop him. He makes it to the top of the stage, and he begins his song. breaking down the boards around him in a show of anger and violence while the ensemble sings below him looking up. He says tearfully "I could not save you" remember during 'Run run brother' where I said the knife would be brought up later? It's because Dally was the one to give him the switchblade. Before the socs get their number Dally comes across Johnny staying in the lot while his parents are fighting. He tells Dally how he's been uncertain since he was jumped to be out alone. So Dally reaches into his jacket, pulls out the blade, and gives it to him(that one promo pic) and Dally tells him that "if you're gonna use it, use it" and I believe he says something along the lines of "because if you do there's no going back" Dally gave Johnny that knife to try and protect him, but all it did was sign his death warrant. It protected him from Bob but not from anything else, not from the fire. And when Dally said he would die for Pony and Johnny he meant it. He sings and is joined by the cast who echo him "little brother" but he stands alone at the top of the stage. He makes his way down to the bottom portion of the stage, stepping onto the train tracks(in my mind it's the same spot where the Curtis' parents crashed) planting his feet and squaring his shoulders before the song ends, and the train comes. According to Ponyboy his body derailed the train, and Pony likes to believe that despite that, some part of Dallas Winston managed to make it's way back to New York. (Playbill released Joshua Boone singing this song and it's so heartbreaking because there is no ensemble in that version so you have to sit with the harsh melody when Dally makes his choice to face the train head on)
Stay Gold:
After Dally's death we head back to the Curtis house. We don't get a time frame but going off the book it's been a week or two since they've both died. Cherry comes by with Johnny's things from the hospital, she mentions she volunteers there now, and gives Pony Johnny's letter for him. Pony refuses to read it but after Soda has his break down about "we're all we got left" he grabs Johnny's letter and starts to read it for Pony. Getting a line or two in before Pony asks for it, starts to read it himself, and the song begins. Johnny Cade joins us back on stage as he sings to Pony his hope for the world he has to leave behind. And of course, that request to stay gold.
Finale (Tulsa '67):
After reading Johnny's letter Ponyboy begins to write his theme. He finishes a page or two before joining his brothers at the table, he tells them what he writing about and Soda tells him to read it. Pony says it's only a few pages but Darry speaks up, "Can I read it?" he asks. And Pony hands it over, it isn't Ponyboy reading that intro again, but Darry, determined to do better by his brother and reading his work. He and Soda pass the theme to each other, taking turns reading sections aloud while Pony sings. Sings about Tulsa and the gang, of Dally who saw being a greaser as a badge of honor, of Johnny who wanted more for himself and more for Ponyboy who vows that "in his memory I'll stay gold!" The entire cast comes onto the stage as they sing, no longer to each other but to the audience, "stay gold!" It is something that has stuck with me and will stick with me to know that those final lines were no longer characters talking to each other, but talking to the audience right as the show comes to an end.
Anyways this got way longer then I thought but if you want me to ramble more about the show literally just ask I can not stop thinking about it. Might make another post about the differences between the musical and the book.

the first night
this is inspired by a post from @heartsforjohnnycake
Three sharp knocks sounded on the door.
“Pony, get the door!” Darry shouted from the kitchen where he and Two-Bit were putting last touches on the grease in their hair. Mom and Dad were gonna be home soon and they wanted to get to the party so they wouldn’t get a lecture on drunk driving again.
When the knocks sounded again, Darry shouted again, “Pony, Soda, get the door!”
Soda, Steve, and Dally were in the living room, the TV blaring over their game of cards. Ponyboy and Johnny were back in the bedroom, probably reading or just talking. Those two were strange like that.
“I got it!” Soda yelled back. A moment later, Darry heard his feet thundering down the hall and two the door. He heard the door open. “Darry?” Soda called back to him.
Anxiety twisted in Darry’s chest, his brother sounded scared. Exchanging a glance with Two-Bit, Darry ducked out of the kitchen.
He nearly ran smack into Ponyboy who must have heard the same waver in their brother’s voice. The two of them looked at the door. Soda stepped aside to let them see two police officers standing there with grim looks on their faces. The one in front was holding his hat in his hands.
Something happened. Something was deeply wrong.
Darry walked up, nudging Soda behind him. Greasers didn’t mix with cops, if anything were to happen, he wanted it directed at him and not his brothers. “What’s the problem, officer?”
The police officer swallowed and then met Darry’s eyes with something like pity. “I’m sorry to be the one to tell you this, son, but your parents were in an accident.”
They were gone before paramedics could get there.
I’m so sorry for your loss.
Is there anyone we can call for you?
The world turned to numb buzzing.
Soda sidled up to Darry over, shaking his head like he was trying to get rid of flies, “It’s gotta be a mistake. Mom and Dad are supposed to be home in five minutes-”
The police officer looked at Soda sympathetically. From behind them, Darry could hear the other boys gathering.
“I’m sorry, there’s no mistake. We found their driver’s licenses in the wreck and-”
“No,” Soda said vehemently. “It’s not them.” He turned to Darry with big, pleading eyes, “Tell them they’re wrong, Darry.”
The whispering behind them grew louder.
Should we call someone?
Who would we call? We’re all right here.
Darry blinked. He needed to be strong. His brothers needed him. He blinked again. Darry forced back the tears that started to build in his eyes. He blinked. And then he looked at his little brother.
“Soda, they’re right,” Darry said. He forced his vocal chords to be even, to not betray an ounce of emotion.
And Soda began to sob, a horrible sound that speared Darry right in the heart. Ponyboy sprinted towards the bathroom and moments later, Darry heard retching. The earth was falling out from under his feet and still the officers were looking at him with pity.
Behind him, Dally said, “I’ll be back.” And then Darry was being pushed out of the way and the officers were being shoved aside as Dally stormed down the front stoop and to his car.
The officer took a step forward, “Son, there are a few things we need to discuss with you. It will just take a moment.”
Darry felt a hand on the back of his neck and Two-Bit steered him onto the porch, the door shutting behind him. He tried to fight against it, saying, “Two, I gotta- My brothers-”
Two-Bit nodded, “I know. We’ll go right back inside. He looked at the officers, “Anything you need to tell Darry, you can tell me too. What happened?”
The officers exchanged a look. “They were crossing the train tracks and their car was hit. They died on impact.” Darry thought he was going to throw up, but he swallowed instead and forced himself to listen. “Son, we’ll need you or your brothers to identify their bodies, it’s just a formality, but we need to do it.”
“I’ll do it,” Darry said quickly. He couldn’t let his brothers do that, no way in hell. “Does it have to be now?”
“Of course not,” the officer replied. “Tomorrow or the day after.” Darry nodded. “And then there’s the issue of your brothers being under eighteen-”
His heart dropped to his gut, blind panic now filling the numbness. “You’re not taking them away, are you?” Two-Bit’s hand clenched down on his shoulder.
“No, no,” the officer said reassuringly. “A social worker will be in touch in a few days.”
Darry nodded. He heard Two-Bit say something else to the officers and then shook their hands with a courteous nod. The police left and Two-Bit and Darry were alone on the front porch. There was still that buzzing in Darry’s ears.
He felt Two-Bit steer him to sit down on the steps, an arm slung around his shoulders.
Two brought their heads together affectionately and held them like that. Darry took a shuddering breath.
When Ponyboy ran to the bathroom, Johnny followed him immediately. By the time Johnny skidded into the small room, Ponyboy was already hunched over the toilet and retching. Johnny sat down beside him. He put one hand on Pony’s back and rubbed soothing circles.
What could he possibly say?
His parents were dead. Johnny felt like crying himself, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis were the closest thing he had to loving parents. But right then, Ponyboy needed him so he had to be strong.
As Pony kept throwing up, he was sobbing too. It was a terrible sound, one that sent chills down Johnny’s spine. He’d never heard his best friend like that, never seen Pony in such despair. Normally when Pony was upset, Soda or Darry would step in, but Darry was talking to the officers and Johnny could hear Soda’s own crying in the living room. He was all Pony had.
So he wrapped his arms around his friend and pressed his head to his back. Johnny thought of sunshine and swimming in the lake and any happy thoughts. He imagined himself wrapping Pony in those warm thoughts.
After a long while, Pony stopped throwing up. He leaned back and wiped his mouth on his sleeve. He looked at Johnny with red eyes and snot under his nose. “Is this really happening?” Pony’s voice was a hair’s breadth away from breaking.
“Yeah,” Johnny said, starting to cry then. “Yeah, it is.”
And Pony all but collapsed against Johnny. Johnny held him fast, his cheek resting on Pony’s greased hair as tears made their way down his face.
Soda thrived on affection. So it was no surprise that when he was in his deepest despair, he clung to his best friend.
Steve’s jacket was covered in snot and tears, but he didn’t say anything. They were curled up on the couch. Steve was pressed against the arm of the couch and Soda was practically sitting in his lap. Soda stopped crying a few minutes ago. Steve ran his fingers through his friend’s hair and held him tight. He’d watch the officers’ car leave, but Two-Bit and Darry remained outside.
Steve had no idea how long they sat there. Every so often, Soda would ask about Pony or Darry and Steve would reassure him that they were okay and they would be coming back soon. He didn’t know if it was true, for all he knew, Darry had run off just like his mom. Something in Steve’s gut told him it wasn’t true. He worried anyway.
Moments later, the front door opened and Dally marched back in, followed by Two-Bit with his arm around Darry. In Dally’s hands were two greasy bags of fast food. The smell of fries and burgers must have drawn the younger boys because Johnny and Pony emerged from the bathroom. Pony still looked pale and he had a white knuckled grip on Johnny’s hand.
The second Darry walked in, his two brothers bolted to him and hugged him. Darry’s face was screwed up as he fought not to cry. He squeezed his eyes closed as he embraced the boys.
Two-Bit patted Dally on the shoulder and ducked into the kitchen. He emerged a moment later with plates and glasses of water. As he and Dally made up plates of food, all of them glanced away from the brothers.
They needed a moment of privacy.
Darry pressed his head to his brothers’ hair. He could feel them shaking, could feel their tears. He inhaled deeply. One minute at a time, that was how he was going to take this. Darry was young and he was scared. Pony and Soda were younger, they were more scared.
He pulled back and put a hand on Soda and Pony’s cheeks, “Come on, let’s sit down and eat.”
Pony wrapped his arms around himself and shook his head, “I’m not hungry.”
“Me neither,” Darry agreed, he ran his thumb along Pony’s cheek. “But it’s getting late and we haven’t eaten. Just a few bites, baby.”
Darry nudged the two of them onto the couch. He wasn’t surprised when they curled up against him, practically sitting on top of him. Two-Bit and Johnny sat down on the couch, Dally taking the chair, and Steve on the floor. Soda moved his feet to rest on Steve’s shoulders. Steve didn’t push them off.
Darry didn’t eat at first, he just watched his brothers and waited for each of them to take a few bites. He had to nudge Pony’s elbow a few times, but eventually he choked down a few fries. Only then did Darry start to eat.
The house was completely silent, despite being filled with seven boys.
After they all ate, Darry looked at his brothers. They looked right back at him helplessly, unsure of what to do or how to react. Darry gently instructed Ponyboy to go take a shower and Soda to help Johnny with the dishes. Neither of the boys fought him on it, they just nodded and did as they were told.
Once they were out of the room, Darry looked at Steve, Two-Bit, and Dally, “Y’all don’t need to stay. I-I can-”
“We’re staying.” To his surprise, it was Dally who cut him off.
Two-Bit nodded, “If you think we’re gonna leave right now, you’re stupid.”
That almost pulled a chuckle out of Darry. He just leaned over and squeezed Two-Bit’s hand, hoping it conveyed how much that meant to him. He knew that the other boys were upset, and had seen them shed tears when they thought the brothers weren’t looking.
That night, the seven of them slept in the living room. The coffee table was shoved aside to make room for a massive pile of blankets and pillows in front of the TV. Darry watched their friends envelope his younger brothers. Two-Bit nudged Soda until he changed into pajamas. Steve complained about Pony’s wet hair dripping on him, but he scrubbed Pony’s head with a towel anyway.
Dally kicked Darry’s leg none too gently to force him to look up at him. “I know you’re not gonna sleep, but you should lay down.”
Darry nodded and let himself be bullied into lying down beside Soda. Dally was right, he didn’t sleep and he didn’t think many of the other guys did. The only reason he knew Ponyboy drifted off was because a few hours later, he woke up with a blood curdling scream.
It took a long while to get Ponyboy calmed down, Soda just held him as tight as he could while Darry looked on helplessly. After that no one got much sleep.
Morning light crested through the sky and crept in through the windows. Darry looked across the living room. His eyes lingered on every face and the places where they were holding each other up. It was a new day. The first day of his life without his parents.

A/N: For the sake of the story I made reader the same age as Soda (16 going on 17) BUT still Pony’s best friend because Soda is also Pony’s bestie. They’re all a buncha besties (including Johnny!!). Reader is v soft lol. Thank you for the request as always! Hope you like it :)
Pairing: Darrel "Darry" Curtis x Female Reader
Word Count: 3.7k +
TW: crying, shaking, panic attacks, angsty
Shivers racked down your spine as you realized the Soc boys were actually following you. You’d had a sneaking suspicion they were following you after your friends peeled away to their respective houses on their walks home. But you’d all but confirmed it when you purposefully took the wrong street to see if they were in fact following you. They were.
Peaking over your shoulder you shuddered seeing the Soc boys car creeping along behind you. They wouldn’t jump a girl would they? You didn’t think they would, but then again, ever since Pony up and disappeared not too long ago leaving one of them dead, Bob Sheldon, things had changed. They stopped playing by the unwritten rules between groups after Johnny apparently stabbed him, killing him.
Where was Dallas when you needed him to walk you home? It truly was the first time you had been alone since Ponyboy, and Johnny vanished four days ago. Soda made sure to walk you to school. Dally or Two-Bit picked you up. They weren’t taking an eye off you, no. Not after the comments Steve and Soda heard at the gas station from other random kids about the Soc’s revenge. Randy had a plan, and you were a part of it.
You continued walking trying your best to come up with a strategy. It was the damn blue mustang which meant you really had to figure this one out. Randy was following you. Bob was Randy’s best friend and if he was as crazy as you thought he was he might just try and kill you in retaliation for his own friends death. You wouldn’t put it past the man who thought he was above all else.
Without so much as a second thought you booked it across lawns, making sure to take every way but the road hoping to lose the creeping Soc’s. You didn’t have time for tears now, no. You had to get to the Curtis household. One of them would be home. If not one of them then surely Dally, Two-Bit or Steve was there. Somebody had to be there. It was home away from home, there was always a random boy there.
Fortunately for you, you knew the area a little bit better than Randy and whatever fool was in his passenger seat did. You full out sprinted towards the Curtis residence when you finally made it their street. You flew past your house knowing nobody was home to make sure they wouldn’t actually kill you.
You heard the tire screech of the blue mustang gun it as you made it towards the unassuming house just a few roads down from yours. You flew through the front door gasping for breaths before slamming the front door closed, locking everything you could in your field of vision.
“Darry! Soda!” You called out between heaving breaths and throwing your backpack on the ground in front of the door like it’d stop them if they came barging through. They wouldn’t though. They knew better than to fuck with the Curtis household. Darrel was a lot of things, but he’d never take getting attacked in his own home.
“Jesus Christ kid. You about knocked the damn door off it’s hinges!” Darry’s booming voice bellowed from the kitchen before he saw your shaking frame hiding away from the front door. He stepped closer before much more calmly asking, “Hey, what’s the matter Bubs?” It was rare for him to call you that let alone with that caring voice. It’s like he knew how frustratingly attractive you found him. But no, nothing could happen. You were his kid brothers best friend. Off limits or some stupid shit like that.
You just pointed towards the door shaking your head, “Randy.” He caught just how shaky you were. You must’ve been terrified he’d concluded. He wished Soda was home so he could comfort you. He prayed for Pony’s return, but he just knew it’d be a while before he saw that kid once again. But he knew. He knew Ponyboy would come home. He couldn’t leave his brothers. He couldn’t leave you.
He looked towards the front lawn through the windows before turning back to you and grumbling a quick, “Stay here.” He was out the front door faster than you could protest. You paced back and forth through the living room into the kitchen and back. You were nervous. Nervous for him. Nervous for Pony and Johnny. Nervous about it all.
He walked back through the door before shutting it, “They’re gone kid.”
You frowned at the nickname. It was like he was mocking you. You knew it was exactly right having a big old crush on your friends older brother. Your own friend. The man who grew up faster than he wanted too to help Soda, Ponyboy and you have somewhat of a normal childhood. The man you had admired for a long, long time. The woman he chose to marry would be one hell of a lucky lady you had concluded. The man loved harder than anybody you had known. He cared so deeply for those around him. He pushed people hard because he knew he could get the best out of them. He wanted more for you guys than he ever had a chance at. His life was decided for him fairly quickly once his parents had passed. He wouldn’t have changed it other than them staying alive.
You placed your hands behind your back to hide their shakiness, “Thanks for checking Darry.”
“You ‘lright?” He walked towards you giving you a once
“I’m fine.” You hummed looking at the ground instead of him.
“You’re shaking bubs.” He noticed. Because he always did. He noticed everything. There was nothing you could realistically hide from him.
You straightened under his gaze, “Adrenaline or whatever. I’m still trying to catch my breath. You know I don’t run by choice Darry.”
His eyes scoured over your body once more before smiling at you poking fun at yourself, “Alright. If you say so. Why were you walking home alone anyway? You heard Soda and Steve. It’s dangerous.” His tone tightened up after he knew you were okay. That was one of the things you had grown to adore about the man.
You smiled knowing that was much more like him, snapping at you for being so thoughtless, “I waited! Nobody showed up.” You tried defending yourself, but you should’ve known Darry wasn’t going to lose this argument.
“You could’ve called. I would’ve gotten you.” His eyes burned into yours as you had to look up to meet his stare. You certainly didn’t feel like his kid brothers best friend in that moment. You felt seen. So seen by the man you held so dearly in your heart. How were you supposed to go on dates with other greasers when they were such knuckleheads compared to the man you had grown to love and adore? It was pointless and a big waste of your time.
“I thought you were at work. Can you blame me? You’re always there.”
He rolled his eyes, “Soda would’ve came.”
“He’s working Darry!” You countered with amusement in your voice.
But he wasn’t amused. Not by your terrified glance towards the door. Not by the shaking that still had yet to subside. But he cooled it knowing the reason he lost Pony was because he blew up at him. He couldn’t do that to you too, “Look, kid. I promise I’m not yelling at you. I just need you to be careful. Randy’s out there looking for revenge. And I really can’t stand the thought of him putting a hand on you. So please, for our sake just be more careful. I can’t protect Pony right now, but I can you. Let me.”
You nodded up at him, “I can do that.”
His eyes looked from yours back down to your trembling frame, “You’re still shaking bubs.”
With the look that he was giving you it felt like you were going to confess all your feelings right then and there. Thank goodness you didn’t. Even though you had a sneaking suspicion he knew exactly how you felt about him.
“I can’t stop.” You admitted knowing a lie would be too obvious at this point.
He walked over and grabbed a blanket from the couch, “Come here
You shook your head, “You don’t have to Dar. This is enough.”
He ignored you, instead ducking into the kitchen, “I want to. Coffee or tea?” He asked you once more.
“Tea would be great.” You answered him knowing he was going to make one or the other if you didn’t answer. It was his style, his love language. He wanted to take care of those he loved and you fell right into it.
“A little milk and sugar. Just how you like it.” He smiled setting the mug down in front of you on the coffee table.
You looked at the tea, then to him and then back to the tea with a flush coating your cheeks. You sure weren’t doing a good job hiding those feelings, “Thanks Darry.”
He took a seat on the couch next to you, “You got it, bubs.”
You grinned looking over to him, “Haven’t heard you call me that in years.”
He huffed looking away from you, “It fits.”
“I’ll take it.” You grabbed for the tea letting it warm your hands before taking a sip, “It’s better than being called kid.”
He looked over to you, “You are just a kid.”
“I’m almost seventeen, Darry. Momma’s already talking about sending me off to college.” You laughed at the ridiculous thought, “Like we have the money for that. I’m sure I’ll end up at the grocery store or gas station.”
He shook his head so fast you would’ve missed it if you weren’t already looking at him, “You’re meant for so much more. I’ll tell you what, since you’re almost seventeen or whatever I’ll stop calling you kid if you let me call you bubs.”
You smiled at the sweet sentiment, “I don’t think so Darry. I think I’m right where I’m meant to be. You know, not everybody wants to run away from this life. I wish I could take this burden from you Darry. But I can’t. I’m also not going to pretend I hate this life because I don’t. And I’ll take it. Bubs it is.”
He looked down feeling it all hit him at once, “You ain’t a burden. None of you are. I just want you guys to have a choice. I didn’t.”
You took a long pause not sure if you wanted to say it. But there was a reason Ponyboy had run away with Johnny. Maybe he needed to know, “Sometimes it feels like it.”
You heard him suck in a breath surely not expecting this conversation to go on between the two of you tonight, “’m sorry bubs. So sorry.”
“It’s okay.” You wanted him to look at you. He was so freaking handsome and God all you wanted him to do was look right at you. You wanted to reassure him. He was a good older brother. He was doing the right things even if he couldn’t properly express them to his kid brothers. He loved and he cared even if they couldn’t see it. You knew he felt like he was failing but he wasn’t. Ponyboy was just learning and growing.
He shook his head, “I don’t think you ever get mad.”
You laughed this time, “I get mad at Pony and Soda all the time. I just don’t get mad at you.” You shrugged setting down the tea knowing you had opened the conversation wide open now.
He gave you a curious glance as he studied your still trembling hands. You were doing a good job at hiding it, but he noticed, “Is that so?”
You grinned, “I guess it’s your old wiseness. How could I get mad at that?”
“Hey smartass. You want dinner?”
You laughed feeling like the weight had finally been lifted off your shoulders, “There’s the Darry I know.”
He scooted closer to you sensing something was off with you. It wasn’t like him to press but something told him he needed to, “I’m going to ask you one more time. Are you alright?” It wasn’t lost on you that he was looking at your fidgety form under the oversized blanket that framed you. How could you lie to him?
“I’m scared Darry.” Your voice wavered as you tried your hardest to keep the welling tears unshed, “I’m scared for Ponyboy. For Johnny. I’m so scared they’ll never make it home.” And the thought of it made you spill those tears right in front of his oldest brother. You thanked whatever lucky stars you had that Sodapop wasn’t home. You could only take this humiliation in front of one brother.
Without so much of a second thought he pulled you right into his arms. Which meant you were sitting right in his lap. He pushed your head down into the crook oh his neck while he let his hands run up and down your back. He felt your cries before he heard you. You were fighting with all your might not to break down in front of him but his softness towards you was making it all the harder.
“Shh, It’ll be alright sweet girl.” You felt him give you a gentle squeeze, pulling you closer into his chest before he continued, “You really think Ponyboy won’t come home to us? To you? That kid is so lost without you. He’ll be back. I can’t promise you much, but I can promise you that.” He rocked you back and forth in his arms in complete silence. The only sound coming from you muffled cries. He held you longer than he needed. You’d stopped crying into his chest nearly five minutes ago, but he simply held you. One hand around your back and one hand cradling your head. It was exactly what you needed. Dally always knew.
“It’s okay. You’re okay. You’ll be okay.” He whispered as he held you. You fisted at the denim shirt he had on grounding yourself into him.
You pulled back looking over his concerned face. Why him? Why did you have to fall in love with the one person who would never love you like you loved him back? You took a shaky breath, “Thank you Darrel. I couldn’t do this without you.”
He brushed the stray tears away from your face, “Can I tell you something? Between me and you?”
You nodded quickly feeling the shivers run up and down your body from his hand running up and down your back as if was second nature. You were wear for Darry Curtis and everybody knew it. He had to know, had to, “You can tell me anything Darry.”
He leaned down to whisper in your ear, “I think you’re the prettiest girl I’ve ever met. Inside and out.”
Your eyes shot to his with a wide expression, “Say you’re serious Darry.” You couldn’t believe him. In all your years of pining. Of making it rather of how you felt about him. You never even caught a hint that he could feel the same for you. This was new and so wonderfully different than the Darry you knew. Was a major breakdown all you needed to break down his walls?
“’m so serious, bubs. When am I not?” He smirked knowing he had you beat there. He was the most serious guy you knew. Everyone knew it. Don’t mess with Darry Curtis.
“You got me there Mr. Curtis.” A laugh escaped you as you burrowed your head into his neck once more, “Can I tell you something Darry?”
He smiled looking down at you curled into his body. You were too cute clinging to him. He didn’t want to admit how many times he’d imagined something of the sort. How could he think of you like that? He knew you since you were six. You moved in down the street and were fast friends with Soda and toddler Pony. Pony was attached at your hip and the rest was history. You might’ve been two years older than him, but you treated him like your equal. He loved that about you.
“You can tell me anything pretty girl.” His smirk only grew as he felt you grinning into his chest. Darry had always adored the spit fire of a girl. You were a born greaser, through and through. You had a mouth, but you had hands to back it up. Darry or Soda had to step in on your behalf many times because the Soc’s refused to fight a girl. You’d been roughed up a few times to ‘put you back into your place’ but it never worked. Your mouth only got bigger. You’d become a staple in their life so seamlessly that Darry couldn’t imagine his without you in it. He didn’t know when he started to like you, nor did he know when he fell in love with you. But he knew it. By the way he wanted to comfort you. The way he craved to see you smile. How he wanted to rip Randy’s head right off when he saw your face of terror. He loved you. And he was tired of hiding it for his kid brothers sake. Like you said, you weren’t a kid anymore. They could handle it.
“You’re the most handsome man I’ve ever laid my eyes on.” It came out with less confidence than you would’ve liked but it was out, nonetheless.
He gave you a squeeze, “Can I tell you one more thing?”
“You can” You nodded your head on his chest. Your heart rate rising at what he could possibly tell you.
“I love you.” He let out a sigh, “Yeah, I love you a whole lot.”
You pulled away from him for a moment. Shock taking over, “You do?”
“I do.” He answered back quickly trying to hinder any doubts you might’ve had.
“That’s great.” You smiled up him. Your eyes ran over his features as you really looked at him up close without any interruption. He was so handsome, so freaking pretty. It was unreal. Your finger ran over a curl that had made its way over his eye. You brushed it away so you could look into his light blue ones.
“Is it?” He smiled as he too looked right back into your eyes, relishing in the small touches you had given him. He shivered slightly at your touch as goosebumps ran down his back. Oh, he was a sure sucker for you.
You hummed while continuing to brush your hands thought his hair. He’d just showered, fresh from any of the greasy gel he’d yet to put in it. Your hand glided seamlessly over the semi-damp curls that framed his face so beautifully, “It is. Wanna know why?”
“Tell me.” He played along with you. Darry rarely had patience, but you seemed to be the exception. You seemed to calm him instead of aggravating him. You pushed his buttons in the right way. He knew a girl like you would never come around again in his lifetime. If he didn’t go for you he’d have to settle for somebody and wonder what his life could have become if he didn’t take the leap with you. He wasn’t going to let that happen though. No, he was taking his chance.
“Because I love you too.”
The words were something Darry Curtis wish he could have recorded to play back. You had loved him too. He was sure those lingering glances and longing stares hadn’t meant nothing.
He smiled, more than elated by your admission, “Let me take you out on a proper date then. Friday for dinner. What do you say sweet girl?”
You grinned at the newest nickname. How you’d gone from kid to bubs to sweet girl within a day should’ve given you whiplash. But you were more than happy for the change. It might’ve seemed oh so sudden to everyone around you, but it had been years in the making between the two of you. Pony never noticed a thing. Soda noticed everything. Darry ignored it for a while, until he couldn’t ignore it any longer.
“Sounds like a plan.” You brushed your hand along his cheek just wanting to touch him. You couldn’t help the smile that overcame you after seeing the trail of goosebumps your fingers left, “I’m not telling Soda though. That’s up to you.” You stuck your tongue out knowing you left him with the worst part of the whole ordeal.
“If that’s what it takes then I’ll happily tell that little grease head. And Pony too when he makes his way back. Serves him right for cutting out on us like that.” His smile grew as he saw your face light up in joy at his words. He was all in. He was fine telling them. He wanted them to know. He wanted people to know you were his. Certain assholes named Randy would back off. He could properly protect you without it being too overbearing. His heart nearly burst out of his chest when he saw your terror-stricken face not only an hour prior. He nearly broke down as you were sobbing into him, clinging to his shirt with your life. He knew it was now or never with you and he wanted to commit. He wanted you. He always had and now was the time to take.
You laughed at him making light of a situation that was already so hard for him. He was so strong for everyone. Especially for you, “It’s a date then.”
A sigh of relief left his throat as he pulled you in for another long hug, “Finally. I’m going to take you out to the nicest dinner.”
You shook your head, “You don’t have to do that.”
He chucked loving that you hadn’t moved from his lap. He could seriously get used to this. It wasn’t often he got alone time around here, let alone with just you. He needed to cherish this time with you knowing it came around few and far in between.
“Like I said,” He brushed a stray hair away from your face as you looked his over, “I want to. For you, I want to do anything and everything.”

The Curtis parents were buried on a cold, rainy day in January; the weather outside perfectly matching the emotions of the East side. The house was quiet, far quieter than it had been in 13 years.
The kitchen table where Darry was covered in paperwork: bills, custody papers, deeds, more bills. Steve and Soda were curled up on the recliner, Soda’s head laying on Steve’s shoulder while he whispers to Soda about something no one else could hear. Ponyboy, Dally, and Johnny sit together on the couch, silent tears rolling down Pony’s face and Johnny running his fingers through his hair. Dally sat with his arm around Johnny’s shoulder, the unoccupied hand twirling his switchblade.
They had all been like this since the funeral, no one saying much of anything to anyone. “He hasn’t cried,” Ponyboy whispered. Johnny and Dally looked at him in confusion, confused by the suddenness of the statement. They knew exactly who he was talking about without having to ask. Darry had been a rock at the funeral. He handled the arrangements, held his brothers while they cried, gave the eulogy, and spoke with the distant relatives who decided to show up. And he did all of it without shedding a single tear. “He ain’t said nothing but I know he’s hurtin’, he’s gotta be,” Pony says before burying his face in Johnny’s chest and beginning to sob.
Soda hadn’t said a word since they got back from the cemetery. Hell, he’d barely said anything while they were there. He only talked to Steve and his brothers, no one else. Steve looked at him and pinched his brows together in worry. A quiet Sodapop was never good. Steve could almost see the gears in his head turning, like there were words trapped in his mind that just wouldn’t come out. Soda buried his head farther into Steve’s shoulder, sighing deeply. “What’s on your mind,” Steve asked. He wasn’t expecting an answer. The question just came tumbling out of his mouth. Steve felt hot tears on his neck, Soda’s body shaking from crying. “Shhhhh bud, I gotcha.”
Darry wanted to get up and comfort his brothers. He wanted to wrap them up in his arms and tell them it would be okay. No matter how much he craved holding them tight, it was like he couldn’t get his legs to work. His brain knew what he needed, his body just would not cooperate. All he could do was stare at the papers in front of him, none finished. Looking at the clock, Darry took a deep breath and stood up for the first time since they’d gotten back to the house. “I-I’m gonna start on dinner,” he murmured to himself. No one in the living room acknowledged him, but both Soda and Pony heard the waver in his voice, the uncertainty that filled his mind.
Before he could open the fridge, the front door creaked open and Two-Bit’s whistle came through it. The boys in the living room look up and Soda smiles a bit, for the first time since their parents died. “Heya Two,” said Soda without moving his head off Steve’s shoulder.
Two-Bit walked behind the couch and ruffled Pony’s hair, who ducked his head to get out of the way. “Hey y’all,” Two replied, “my mom made lasagna for us so that you don’t gotta cook Dar.”
Darry froze in his spot in the kitchen. He sucked in a deep breath and promptly collapsed onto the floor in tears. Everyone stared at him in shock, unsure of what they were supposed to do. The shock took a second to wear off. When it did, both Soda and Pony lept out of their seats and were at their big brother’s side before anyone could blink. “I’m sorry, God I’m so sorry,” Darry stammers, tears streaming down his face. No one says anything, everyone afraid of making a move in case they disturb the rare vulnerability of the gang's eldest.
Two-Bit sets the food on the kitchen table and drops down on one knee in front of Darry. “I didn’t know a bit of Italian would make ya cry Muscles,” he states from his spot on the floor. Darry chuckles a little bit, then leans further into Soda’s shoulder. Darry continued to murmur a mixture of I’m sorry’s and other apologies while Soda and Ponyboy held onto him.
The only sounds heard throughout the house were Darry’s sniffles and the quiet shuffling of the boys in the living room, unsure of what they should do. Neither Pony nor Soda dared to move to make sure Darry takes the time he needs to get all of his emotions out. Dally, Steve, and Johnny begin to make their way into the kitchen, all of them settling somewhere on the floor near Darry.
After what feels like hours, Darry’s tears finally stop. He swipes at his eyes and says, “Glory y’all I’m sorry, I shouldn’t’ve broke down like that.”
Two-Bit shakes his head, putting a hand on Darry’s knee. Soda wraps his arm around Darry’s shoulder and squeezes it. “You don’t gotta apologize, you don’t gotta be strong all the time,” Soda replies as he tugs Darry closer to his body. Darry fought the urge to disagree with him. He had to be strong, he had to be. Someone had to pay the bills and take care of the gang. Someone has to keep the lights on and food on the table. Darry had no choice but to be strong for everyone.
They stayed on the floor together until Dally stood up to stretch his legs. “Alright, some of y’all,” Dally says pointedly at the Curtis brothers, Darry in particular, “haven’t eaten all day. And I happen to know Pony here gets cranky so let’s eat.” Pony gets up and shoves Dally with his shoulder, who just wraps an arm around him and laughs. The gang get up, Darry grabbing plates and silverware while Two opens up the dish.
Everyone gathers at the kitchen table, with Steve hopped up on the counter eating his plate. Darry takes a seat at the head of the table, smiling now that he knew everyone was in the house, fed and safe.

johnny x reader
word count: 2.5k
warnings: cussing, joke about sex, mentions of abuse and hitting
johnny and the rest of the gang were walking around town when steve asked, “hey, do y’all wanna go to the diner near that one dairy queen? the one up ahead where it has good hash browns and shit?” they all agree and headed towards the diner.
as they headed towards the diner, johnny couldn’t stop thinking about what he could tell his friends. he wanted them to know about the girl he likes, you, and to maybe get advice from them for what to do about the situation.
when they opened the door to enter the diner, a waiter asked, “hello, i hope you’re having a great day! how many people will be joining us today?” and dally with no hesitation, rudely replied, “the fuck does it look like? count with your own damn eyes.”
the waiter looked down and nodded, soda walked to him and apologized, “sorry about him… we have uh, seven people. thank you.” nodding and smiling at the waiter. he replied but didn’t look back up, “you guys can sit anywhere.” his voice flatter than how it was before, johnny feeling bad for him, knowing how it was to have his day ruined because of one small interaction.
as they passed the waiter, darry chose a booth and they all sat down, steve and soda on the inside of the booth on the left side while pony and johnny were next to them. across from steve was two-bit, darry and dally.
the topic of romantic partners and relationships came up, and johnny thought it was the perfect time to talk about you, just after dally was done talking and trashing on his ex-girlfriend. “man, i just realized sylvia was a fucking bitch, man. she two times me while i was in the cooler, like, who the fuck would think to do that to me?” he shook his head, almost as if he was replying to his own question, “i don’t know, man…”
the others in the booth began to agree, telling him he deserved better. ponyboy looked at johnny, seeing he was trying to say something but kept getting interrupted, so he said, “it’s okay, man. i’ll listen.” and turned his body towards johnny.
he smiled at the younger boy, appreciating that he noticed and observed more than others. blushing, he stated, “well, i’ve been talking to this girl… her name’s y/n and we’ve been hanging out… like, a lot. and she’s real nice, i just don’t know if she likes me—“
dally interrupted, “wait, you’re talking to someone, man? why didn’t you tell us?!!” the whole group started asking him questions, making johnny overwhelmed with too much attention. he muttered, “god, one at a time, man…”
they all started to become quieter, however, two-bit asked, “she a grease or a stuck up prick?” worried that johnny liked someone who wouldn’t be good for him. he hesitantly replied and looked away, “well… she ain’t a greaser but she isn’t stuck up… she’s got money and all that shit, but she’s nice!!”
silence overcame the group, he watched as they slowly started to turn their heads towards each other, wanting someone to say something yet not wanting to be that person. steve decided to speak up and stated, “don’t go for her.”
most of the gang started to agree, johnny feeling ashamed for even opening up to them, but he still really liked you. soda stood up for him, “hey, guys, come on. maybe she’s not that bad, he seems to really like her. you should bring her over to our house, johnny. that way we can meet her, and maybe you dickwads can see how she is before really judging her.”
he smiled at soda, thanking him silently. the gang started to nod and talk amongst themselves, speaking their own ideas to each other. darry stated, “you can bring her over to the house as long as you don’t do anything… bad. soda or someone can help you out, if you need advice for talking to her.”
johnny nodded at him and smiled, grateful for all that the curtis family had done for him. they later ordered their food and it was brought to them, continuing to talk about you and what the plan was if you came over. soda knew the most and had the most experience with girls, he had been in actual serious relationships, unlike dally and the others.
soda and pony would come in and start up a conversation if yours and johnny’s was dying down, eventually wanting to get to the topic of relationships or a vulnerable situation.
the gang had left the diner once they were done with their food, leaving in various ways as to not pay the bill. they walked in the direction of the curtis house, johnny was told to call you and ask you to come over sometime.
when they walked into the house, steve pushed him over to the couch, telling him to grab the phone and call you. johnny looked over to the rest of the gang, seeing them blocking the exits of the room, staring at him intently.
he murmured, “this better work.” and picked up the phone, spinning the dial to call your number that he had memorized. he held the phone up to his ear, hearing your voice and a, “hello? who is this?” his eyes went wide and he tried to keep himself from smiling, his friends quietly cheering him on and laughing softly.
“hey, uh, it’s johnny. do you think you wanna come to my friend’s house tomorrow? i could, um, walk you there. it would be with around six other people, but it’s mostly be us talking— if you’d want that, though.” he asked, his face turning into a shade of red, smiling at how your voice was in his memory.
you exclaimed, “johnnyyy!! i got nervous for a second, didn’t know who it was,” you giggled, “i bet i could go, i hardly have anything tomorrow. walk me there, you’ve been to my house before, you know the way.” he responded, “nice, i’ll be at your house tomorrow around… 2pm? we’d probably only be there around two hours, but um… oh, shoot, i gotta go, sorry. i promise ill be there, talk to you later!!”
you quickly stated, “bye johnnyyy!! i look forward to seeing you tomorrow!!” he hung up fast, he got too nervous when he was talking to you and thought he messed it up. he smiled at them and beamed, “she’s coming tomorrow!!!” all of them starting to talk to each other in happiness, looking forward to seeing you, the girl their friend talked so highly of.
as the day went on, he kept looking forward to being with you, as you wanted to be with him as well. even when he was talking to his friends and you were talking with your parents, you couldn’t stop thinking about each other.
when the day ended, johnny had stayed at the curtis house. he brought a few pairs of clothes, which included his pajamas and the clothes he would be in while he was to be with you. he was in ponyboy’s room, staring at the ceiling, still thinking about what to do when he would see you. ponyboy suddenly asked, “you worried about tomorrow?” and turned his head to johnny.
he thought for a second, not looking at him but stating, “a bit.” he paused, “i don’t wanna mess it up with her, man, she’s amazing…” pony looked into his eyes and knew johnny didn’t want to lose you, pony knew it would go perfectly tomorrow, it was just the way johnny was thinking that was wrong.
johnny fell asleep with you in his mind, and as he woke up, he immediately thought about you. it was in that moment that he realized he really needed that day to go well, he couldn’t handle it if it would go wrong. he got up from pony’s bed and walked into the kitchen, already smelling breakfast, darry, soda and pony already there.
“hey johnny, what took you so long?” soda asked, a little concerned about him. johnny looked to the clock to his left, realizing it was 12pm. he groaned, “shoot, sorry… i didn’t realize it was so late. i should go pick up y/n soon… i really can’t miss it.” putting his head in his hands and murmuring to himself.
he walked to the table and grabbed some breakfast, thanking darry for cooking. he continued talking to the three of them for an hour, he later got up from his chair and headed towards pony’s room, changing into his clothes he would wear to see you.
he walked out and brushed his teeth, talked to pony and his brothers for a few more minutes before the rest of the gang walked into the living room. “you excited, johnny? you guys gonna bang?” two-bit asked, dally laughing at the joke and johnny shaking his head.
“i know you guys just got here, but i gotta pick up y/n. bye.” he ran out of the door and walked in the direction of your house, arriving nearly ten minutes after he left. there was an open gate, seeing a well decorated two story house in front of him.
he looked around before knocking on the door, hearing footsteps and a, “coming!!” before the door opened, showing your happy face and your outfit, well accessorized and well dressed.
he looked at you up and down, thinking you were beautiful. “you look… amazing…” still in shock, not knowing someone could be as good looking as you. you blushed, smiling and him and closing the door behind you, walking towards the curtis house.
“you look real good, too, johnny. you always do.” you complimented, smiling at him. the two of you started up a conversation, still continuing as you got to johnny’s friend’s house. you followed him, watching him open the door and he stated, “don’t be nervous. my friend are real nice.” knowing it was half right and half wrong.
most of the guys were in the kitchen, eating and talking together. johnny introduced you, “this is y/n, she’s my friend i told you about.” you felt a little sad when he said that, wanting something more. and he couldn’t feel worse than how he did when he said that. soda teased, “uh huh, a friend…” the rest of the gang chuckling, you started to blush.
johnny led you to the living room, turning on the television and continuing to talk. he eventually asked if you had dated anyone yet, which you said no to, saying you didn’t think anyone who was up to your standards liked you. he replied, saying he felt the same.
the two of you began to switch the topic and talk about emotional problems that had happened at home or in the past in general. being that vulnerable with each other was something both of you weren’t able to do that often, you had to make people think you were careless yet careful at the same time. johnny didn’t have any reputation to keep up, he just didn’t want to open up to anyone.
as the both of you opened up to each other, he told you about how his parents acted. saying his father would beat him, his parents would yell at him constantly, both hated him. you felt bad, he nearly started to cry, tears forming in his eyes, him feeling embarrassed and biting his lip.
you put your arm around his shoulder and kissed his forehead, telling him, “i’m sorry that happened to you, johnny… you know i’ll always be here for you, right..?” rubbing his shoulder comfortingly and mumbling to him sweet words.
he looked at you with sadness and vulnerability in his eyes, you didn’t know if it was the right time, but you hesitantly leaned towards him. he leaned into you, too, and put his hands on your hips softly, kissing you lightly. when the two of you pulled away and looked to each other, you kissed once again.
then there was silence, one that you didn’t know if you dreaded or not. johnny told you, “i really like you y/n…” then asked, “would you, like, be my girlfriend..?” something he practiced after thoroughly thinking about the flirting signals you would give him.
you exclaimed and smiled with true joy, hugging him and giving him another kiss, telling him ‘yes’ over and over. the rest of the gang were too busy talking to notice the two of you were romantically together now. when it was around 4pm, you told johnny you had to be heading home.
as he walked you back, the two of you held hands and talked about your favorite moments together, times you had tried to flirt with him but he didn’t pick up on it and more.
by the time the both of you were at your house, you thanked him, “thanks for inviting me, talking with you was real fun.. we should do it again sometime. and um, thanks for asking me to be your girlfriend.” he chuckled at the end.
you walked a little closer to him, putting your hands on his chest and giving him a kiss goodbye, waving lowly and walking into your house, locking it behind you.
johnny was ecstatic, the two of you were boyfriend and girlfriend now, and he couldn’t stop smiling as he was walking back to the curtis house. when he opened the door, the whole gang was in the living room, waiting for him to come back.
they asked things like ‘what happened’ ‘did you guys kiss’ ‘are you together’ and more. he smiled widely and stated, “we kissed. and we’re together now too!!” the boys got up and started jumping around, congratulating johnny and cheering for him.
when you were at home, you were calling with your friends and telling them that johnny had asked you to be his girlfriend. they were happy for you, and when you hung up around an hour later, you were still thinking about him. kicking your feet and writing cute letters to him, drawing the two of you as stick figures and hearts around them.
johnny also continued to think about you for days until he saw you again, knowing he was the luckiest guy to ever live because he was with you. he felt a sense of pride, he had done all of that, kissed you and asked you out without any help. he completely ditched the plan and it worked out perfectly.
he would have it no other way.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐞 𝐤𝐢𝐝! 𝐬/𝐨
𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫'𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞 - i've had a few requests similar to this so here ya go !! as a performer i love this icl
DARREL CURTIS -
Darry is incredibly supportive with your interests
If you need help rehearsing your lines, he will sit down with you once his brothers have gone to bed and read through them
I love the idea that Darry can dance (totally not bc of dirty dancing) so if you need to go through a choreography, he’s the person to help you
He loves it when you sing sm
If he hears you, he just smiles fondly and shakes his head but he’ll never bring it up to you
He’ll try to go every single one of your shows/productions
If he can’t make it because of work, he’ll make someone else go and will always be there to pick you up afterwards
SODAPOP CURTIS -
Soda would adore the fact that you’re an actor/actress
He thinks it’s so cool and he will brag about it to anyone who listens
He’ll try his hardest to help you memorise your lines, but he doesn’t have the patience to sit there and wait for you to go through an entire script
He loves it when you sing
Whether its in the kitchen, in the shower, in the car, you name it, he loves it
Y’all will do duets together in his car
Dancing together in the kitchen
Soda will go to all of your shows and will get front row tickets every time
Plus he cheers the loudest for you !!
PONYBOY CURTIS -
I think Pony would be super interested if you’re an actor/actress
We all know how much he loves his movies and books, and I cant see him being any different when it comes to plays
He’ll help you will your lines, and he’ll help you interpret different scenes (he just sees things differently)
When it comes to dancing however… maybe he isn’t the best person to go to
He’ll sit and watch you practise for ages and will give feedback when needed
He loves that you can sing so much and will always give you little compliments about your voice
He always tells you that he’ll be watching you at the drive-in, on the screen, one day
He might try and get involved in some of the high school productions, but only if you’re part of them
If not, he’ll always be watching you from the crowd and he’ll be super proud of you !!
JOHNNY CADE -
Johnny is so incredibly supportive of you omg
He loves everything you do and thinks it’s so cool
When it comes to helping you learn your lines, he is super patience and will prompt you when needed
He could sit for hours and just read your script without complaint
He adores watching you dance
Unlike Soda, he won’t join in – he’s more than happy to stay at a reasonable distant and cheer you on from afar
When it comes to your singing, he could just listen to you for ages and he encourages you to sing around him all the time
He finds it comforting in a way
He will come to your rehearsals if you want him to and he always feels so at ease watching you (anything to stop him going home ig)
At yours shows, he will always be somewhere in crowd, and will tend to drag Pony along with him
He’ll be watching you the entire time
DALLAS WINSTON -
Dallas doesn’t see the appeal in theatre
He’s never really cared for shows and performances until he learnt about your interests
Just because you like, doesn’t mean he’s going to change his views, but he might not be quite so harsh about it
He won’t help you with your lines – if he does, you’re probably better off practising alone anyway bc he’ll purposefully try to mess you up
“It’s all part of the acting process, babe. Trust me.” (dont trust him)
He does however like to watch you dance
His eyes will be fixed on your the whole time and he thinks your so hot
He is the type to get jealous if you have an on-stage love interest
Dally is not afraid to brag about you – everyone knows that Dallas Winston’s partner is a performer. Its common knowledge
He will tease you for your singing, but he secretly thinks its crazy good
He’d never say that to you though
Now when your shows and performances roll around, he probably wouldn’t go to every single one
He might linger in the back for a bit, but he’ll probably end up leaving during the interval and waiting outside for you
He does support you though; he just doens’t see the appeal of “prancing around a stage”
STEVE RANDLE -
Steve is your number 1 fan and I mean it
He’s crazy about the idea of you being a performer and will always be there to big you up and support you
He’ll try his best to help you with your lines. He might not be the greatest at it, but at least he tries
He shows you off to everyone and will chew people’s ear off about you
“That’s cool, but did you know my partner is an actor/actress”
He never shuts up
He will always try and dance with you, but this guy has to left feet
Your choreography ends up turning into a mess of twirls and loud laughter
Uses you as he personal jukebox
He loves it when you sing so much and will make song requests
Sometimes he joins in, but he never sounds very good bless him :(
Goes to every single one of your performances and shows
Always tries his best to get front row seats so he can cheer you on
You will always see him grinning at you in the crowd like this boys is smiling so big when he sees you on stage
TWO-BIT MATHEWS -
If you thought Steve was you biggest fan… You were wrong
Two thinks you’re the best and he will say that
You’re better than every other actor, singer, dancer he’s ever heard of by a mile
If you two are watching a show or movie together, he’ll lean over and whisper: “sure, they’re great… but compared to you, they’re nothin’, babe.”
He’s actually suprisingly good when it comes to helping with your lines – he’s got that theatrical energy about him
LOVES your dancing and never hesitates to join in
Teach him the choreography please and he will practise with you
Probably got kicked out of your rehearsals for shouting praise at you LMAO
Always compliments your singing like he loves it
Sometimes he’ll put the radio on just to hear you sing
Two-bit always cheers the loudest at your shows like you know those really obnoxious people who clap loud and whistle? Yeah. Thats him.
At the end, he’ll run over to you and spin you around, gushing about how great you were
He loves everything about you I swear

Now I see a lot of Dallas with Tim or with Johnny content. But y’know what is would like to see? Dallas and Sodapop as a couple. I love tropes where one person isn’t use to genuine kindness and falls head over heels over the one person who is just that..
So General Headacanons for Dallas and Sodapop? (Whatever their ship name maybe because I refuse to call them Dallypop)
ive actually heard about this ship a bit but never read content for em, so this is a moment in history☝🏽☝🏽, ship name wise, off the tope of my head is like texas coke, cause soda in texas is called coke and yada yada yada, but booooo, and then there was fizzy state, but that sounds stupider, so listen i swear ill have a better one one of these days i swear
•as soon as i read this i thought “soda has no room to talk about pony and curly anymore”, if ur dating dally, ANY advice u have about dating should b thrown out the window and ur voice should fall on deaf ears
•theyve made out on someones car before, i wouldnt put that above them, especially if its someone who dally doesnt like
•dally makes comments about soda right in front of pony and pony hates it so much, he wants to rip his ears out hes not trynna hear that
•man even steve is like “??????” cause how did u guys get together what could yall possibly have in common enough to date each other for
•soda likes hearing about dallys nyc stories, some of em r fucked up, but others r pretty funny, like a coin toss when he asks him to tell him one
•dally cant rlly get THAT mad at soda, annoyed??? sure, but soda just has that face u cant get mad at, dallys not feelin 100% better, but he is rolling his eyes and letting whatever happened slide
•dally strikes me as a jealous/possessive partner he hates when soda gets hit on by anyone, he doesnt make it OBVIOUS that theyre together, but he does push them away
•yes, dally is staring while soda is working on a car, he would b staring harder if he saw soda at a rodeo
•getting drunk still isnt sodas scene, but dally does sneak soda over into bucks to party from time to time
•darry doesnt,,,even know how to go about this one, like at all, like yea, nothin BIG has changed but those two????rlly??????
•id like to think dally is more attentive to pony bc of soda and how important he is to him, kinda the same w soda and johnny
•it would take a while for dally to get used to how soda flirts bc how soda flirts is just not a way that dally is used to at all, but he doesnt let that show

I was wondering if you could do a fic or som HcC’s for a Curtis sister that’s like really young? Like maybe 7 or 8 years old?
Summary: The Outsiders with a young Curtis!reader (platonic!!!!!)
Warnings: none
Author's Note: none
PONYBOY CURTIS
Pony is actually really happy that he finally isn't the youngest, he doesn't want to be looked down on anymore
That being said, if someone finds it in themselves to look down on you because of your age, Ponys getting very mad
Pony doesn't have a lot of friends besides the gang so he likes to hang out with you a lot
He's always wanted to be an older sibling and be as "mature" and "wise" as Darry and this is his chance
JOHNNY CADE
Johnny likes having someone likes you "in" the gang, it makes him finally not be seen as the youngest
He finds you sweet and adorable, he is very protective of you, especially when his parents try and talk to you
He's always with you when he hangs out with Pony so you two know a lot about one another
There are sometimes where he finds you too much for him but he's never rude to you.
SODAPOP CURTIS
To him you're like Ponys twin, he's always treating you like Pony even if he's a little rough
He means no harm though, he just doesn't know how to handle a little kid now that his parents aren't there
If he has to take care of you, he brings you to the DX and has you colour while he helps out customers
At the end of the day you show him what you coloured and he's acting so excited like you're the best artist in the world
STEVE RANDLE
Steve tries his absolute hardest to take good care of you, but he's 1. A greaser and 2. Never had to take care of a kid before
He keeps asking you what you like to do, it never changes but he asks you over and over again
He's honestly pretty good at taking care of a young kid, he's always kind and gentle although he forgets you're 7/8 and treats you like you're 4.
When he's alone with you He does this really funny baby voice, he would literally die if the gang found out
TWO BIT MATHEWS
Two is really good at taking care of kids, he's already taking care of his sister so he knows how to do it
He sets you and his sister ip on a play date and has a tea party with both of you to keep you both entertained
He's only a little afraid that the gang would find out about how he treats you but then at the same time he doesn't care
He'll take you out to the drive through to get ice cream and doesn't care if the socs mock him because he's having a good time
DARRY CURTIS
Darry would honestly be the best and worst at taking care of you because he's used to taking care of kids but he's only used to kids around Ponys age
He (secretly) goes to mother groups to find out how to take care of a little kid because he wants to be the best caregiver
Like Steve and Soda, he either treats you like an older kid or like a baby, it just depends on the day
He's really trying hard but sometimes it's rough for him, especially since you get into so much trouble
DALLAS WINSTON
Dallas hates you. He finds you annoying, whiny, bratty, childish but he will not voice his opinions because he doesn't want to lose the gang
He can tolerate you for short amounts of time but he WILL NOT take care of you for a day.
It's no shock that Dally doesn't like kids so no one trusts him to handle you correctly which he oddly takes offense to
He spent a day running after you after you stole his box of cigarettes from his jacket and making you swear you wouldn't tell Darry what you had.
