this is inspired by a reblog i did of @gr3ase-g0t-h0ld 's hc but I wanna yap abt it

Dallas and Darry are more similar than ppl think.

They both hold up a tough-guy facade and suck things up to make themselves tougher and less vulnerable.

Darry does it for others. he does it so other people can have someone to cry on, so other people know he is a rock, and other people go to him for help.

Dallas doesn't care about others- he does it for himself. He puts this mask on because he is scared of the feeling he is scared of the feeling of being weak- maybe because his strength is the only thing he can control.

They both don't like feeling their emotions- but darry doesn't because it makes him want to share- but he doesn't want to be a burden.

Dallas doesn't like his feelings because they hide from him until they are triggered, which forces everything out. he is numb until he feels everything at once.

Darry always feels his feelings, and he wishes to be numb.

The two of them together creates a yin and yang- two opposites that fit together perfectly in an imprrfect harmony.

What’s interesting about the Steve and his parents thing is that in SE hintons fanfiction (yes, she wrote fics on ffnet. They’re not that great but they’re worth reading if you like extra content) Steve’s mother IS there and she’s not really a bad parent?

She gave Steve fudge to give to the Curtis bros for Christmas I think. Steve also mentions having a million little cousins (we already knew he had at least one girl cousin from Kansas, but now we know he has a million lol)

So she doesn’t seem terrible? Just an average mom who might not be strong enough to stand up to her husband, even at the cost of her son.

Of course, these aren’t necessarily canon just because Se Hinton wrote them, I don’t even listen to it lol, but it’s interesting

Yeah, I’ve read those actually! (They’re okay, nothin too special outside of the fact that she’s the one that wrote them. Don’t remember much about the details tho cos I read ‘em back before I was really in the fandom..back in May I think)

Mrs. Randle could absolutely be present and okay, which is a take one could go with for sure.

But yeah I don’t really take anything not explicitly in the book as canon (yk. Unless it’s funny. lookin at you “secrets book” tweets…), like the Soda in Vietnam thing isn’t canon to me. Canon’s the book, but fandom/interpretation is a playground we can do whatever we want with yk? (Obviously ya probably 100% know that, anon, I’m just rambling lol)

Anyway, I definitely agree! It is very interesting, and I think picking and choosing what to adopt into your own version of “canon” is one of the most fun parts of fandom for me lol!

Darry can tell who walked into the house depending on the sound of the door. Every member of the gang has an entrance that can be very easily missed.

Dally slams the door open and doesn't bother to close it behind him.

Steve opens the door and then slams it behind him, then goes to bother whoever is closest.

Johnny is almost always following someone so if the door stays open a bit longer and is quietly shut then Johnny has followed them in.

Two-Bit is similar to Steve except he dusts off his shoes. His mama always gets onto him tracking dirt so it's a habit.

Ponyboy quietly opens the door and shuts it behind him and usually calls out a I'm home. Or he's completely quiet except for the fact he stomps without realizing it.

Sodapop is almost always excited when he gets home so he accidentally slams the door into the wall and apologizes. He also usually announces he's home.

Darry just wishes they would stop slamming the door, it hurts the door and he's not exactly itching to fix the hinges.

I looked up the outsiders house on Zillow just out of curiosity and I found out it has 4 bedrooms. Not only does Soda fully have his own bedroom that he just doesn’t use but that also means that the Curtis parents bedroom is probably just sitting there untouched. So now i’ve decided to make myself cry by thinking about the boys going to sleep in there when they miss their parents.

Welcome to Soc September!

This is a blog that will only be active during September! In The Outsiders fandom we put most of our focus on the greasers. So this event is dedicated to all the underrated SOCs in the book, movie, and musical! It's not a contest or anything, just something to appreciate them all and have fun! If you want to participate please tag things with Soc September or tag this blog!

Here is how to participate!

Make artwork, headcanons, fanfiction, etc. of any SOC characters! Whether its more well-known ones like Cherry or Paul. Or ensemble members of the musical! Heck, even soc ocs you might have work! We accept just about everything! The last full week of September will also have a special event with prompts on the daily! We do accept ships including greasers but the greaser can't be the focus.

We don't accept writing or art of the following

NSFW things about any characters, if its a bit suggestive that's different. But don't do anything blatantly NSFW. Also do not justify characters' actions if they are truly terrible. If you're writing in Bob's perspective of jumping Pony and Johnny and he's like "They deserve it!" that's ok since it's his perspective. But if you're doing character analysis and you're like "Cherry was evil for not saying hi to Pony and Bob was in the right to try and murder Pony!" that's a bit different. Blood and such is allowed just put a TW!

If you don't know the SOCs here they are under the cut

Cherry Valance- The redhead that Dally hits on and helps change Pony's perspective on SOCs. Marcia is her best friend and Bob is her boyfriend (or ex depending on how you look at it) She can be rather fierce and has an interesting perspective on things. She's kinda the main soc

Bob Sheldon- A curly headed blonde (or straight, dark haired) 18 year old. He's more villanized in the book and is killed in self-defense by Johnny. He's a mean drunk but is also a good leader and well-liked by SOCs. Cherry's boyfriend.

Randy Adderson- A dark haired 18 year old. Best friend to Bob and helps jump Pony and Johnny. He has a change in perspective after Bob's death and has a chat with Pony that helps humanize the SOCs. He's the boyfriend to Marcia though it is disputed on if they actually care about one another romantically.

Marcia M. Marcia- A SOC girl with shorter black hair. She is best friends with Cherry and is not seen outside of the drive-in scene. She is very witty and has a flirtatious conversation with Two-Bit Mathews. Many have begun to ship them. She doesn't have a set last name nor really a visible personality.

Paul Holden- An older SOC guy. Used to be good friends with Darry Curtis. Currently in college and skilled in football. Not much is known about his history with Darry but the fans have come up with a lot of it.

Chet Baker, Trip (Terrence Ib), Brill (Clark Brillsteen)- Musical ensemble SOC boys. Friends of Bob. Chet seems to have a crush on Cherry and may get with her after the end.

Beverly- Soc girl ensemble, dislikes the greasers. Melody Rose has given bits and pieces of her personality but she doesn't have any lines.

Melvin and Sergei- The soc boy alter egos of melody rose and sarahgrace. The best soc boys overall

Greg Parker- He's from the weird TV show and I know next to nothing about him

Darry and Soda: "Why aren't we the heroes?"

Ponyboy: "Have you read to the end? YOU ARE! *coughs* my heroes.. "

Dally: *five hours later when everyone changed the topic already, because he's a slow reader* Wait, Johnny dies and I do nothing?"

Pony: "You're a stone cold asshole, of course you do nothing."

Dally: *pulls out knife* Whatcha talkin' about you little shit I'd literally DIE for Johnny Cade, LITERALLY!! You change that!"

Ponyboy: "Alright alright... *adds note: 'Dallas dying for Johnny Cade'* But why?"

Dally: "Cause he's the only thing I love, duh."

Pony strikes me as the kind of person with breathing problem. Not asthma, but he breathes loudly and bad. Is it because my kitten makes a lot of noises when she breathes? Maybe. Pony does too.

Ponyboy and Angela dated in twttonnfor a while, BOTH where in the wrong since Pknt was just saying her for the fuck of it and didn't even really love her, and Angela did love him but due to learned behavior was well, to say the least, a bad partner. Its implied that the Shepard parents are atleats abusive to eavhother, and I think Angela learned from that and it said she atleats participated in it a little, same with Tim and Curly but Tim grew out of it and tried his very hardest not too, Curly just saw Ponyboy as some god or smt after the church bc he “fixed” the issues in his sense and since they where “friends” he didn't wanna lay a single hand on him.

Angela however got very hostile during little arguments, and I can see her turning towards violence.

That relationship was pretty short ended when darry found out and lost his shit

i feel like it is also semi-implied in TWTTIN that pony was kinda oblivious to Angel liking him at first- or he didn't care- Pony is a hater. BUT i see him finding out by like Curly or Mark or someone that she liked him and he felt bad for her and got in the relationship with her anyways (like u said)

I think Ponyboy was really shooken up about Angela getting abusive and physical with him because 1) of how he responded when Darry smacked him 2) I feel angel wouldn't apologize or realize that what she was doing was wrong bc it is so normalized in their household (again, like you said)

Soda def freaked out and cried with the poor boy

Cathy was a lot nicer to Ponyboy but Cathy and Angela beefed hard

Dallas really liked taking photos

While he was roaming the US he ran an errand for this guy at a nicer store and in return the man gave him an older but still nice camera. At first he was like "What the heck man?! Why would I need this?!" But he started making good use of it. When he wasn't stressed about where to go next, he found the most scenic places and snapped a picture. Something about it was cool to him. Being able to find a moment in time that he could freeze forever. He started finding places to get them developed and stuffing them in an old notebook. (How he managed to pay for it or swindle the store is up to you)

When he made it to Tulsa he took a lot less photos. It wasn't exactly a pretty place and he didn't have much use for photos of the streets. But once he became a part of the gang, that changed. In particularly interesting moments he would quietly snap a picture and get them developed if he could (Things like Soda and Steve having gymnastics competitions, Two-Bit trying to hang on the ceiling fan, etc) The gang eventually found out and encouraged him. At first he kept pulling the "Well I have it, might as well make use of it." card whenever Soda or Johnny would ask about it. If Mr. Curtis said something about a career in photography, Dally would brush him off and say something like "It'd just be a waste of money, I'm no good at it anyway."

Then for his 15th birthday, the gang all got him smaller gifts. This was because altogether (With the help of the Curtis parents) they got him a bigger, main gift. Dallas had never celebrated his birthday before or ever gotten gifts so he was kind of confused at first. Then they revealed it to him. A brand new camera and a case to come with it. He thanked them for it and though he didn't show it to them, he was ecstatic. The first photo he took was to test it out and was of the gang and the Curtis parents all in the living room together. It's one of his favorites.

All the photos have 3 things. The date it was taken, his initials, and a little note about them. The notes range from just simple titles to "After this, Steve almost slipped off the roof and Soda fell into a tree."

He has 2 different albums now. One smaller one compiled of nature and stuff when he was traveling around. And a really thick one full of photos of the gang and things he found interesting. After he died, they were both moved to the Curtis house. They all flip through it whenever they miss Dally and Johnny.
