Secretly Married Buddie

I was working on this prompt 'secretly married' by @buddiedrabbles for waaaay to long, so I'm finally posting it now as just a drabble. Maybe one day I'll finish the extended version.

Warning for Eddie whump and mild gore.

“Hey, come ‘ere.”

“Stop moving, damn it.” Hen admonished, rapidly adding more gauze to pack the wound in his side. Bobby was yelling into a radio, desperately directing another aid car to their location. A slow-burning office fire hadn’t been the cause of too much worry, until an unused storage room containing leftover gas and combustibles had exploded as Buck and Eddie swept the floor. Eddie had moved before Buck could react, tackling Buck and taking the brunt of the impact.

“Buck, s’where’sbuck…” Eddie slurred, his side an oozing mess and eye’s dilated.

“He’s here, Chim’s got him.”

“I’m okay, Eddie. You gotta stay still.” Buck limped over to where they had laid Eddie on a backboard, Chim hurrying to Hen’s side to help stabilize Eddie.

“I’ve gotta tell you Buck-”

“No, you gotta stay quiet baby, they’re sending another aid car. Just hang on.” Buck placed one hand gently ontop of Eddie’s hand, one of the few places that remained unharmed.

“I need to tell you, please, Buck-” Eddie choked, gagging and spitting up blood before he could finish his sentence.

“I already know, Eddie, don’t- don’t do this. You’re gonna be fine.”

Eddie sighed, closing his eyes momentarily as Buck and Chim lifted the backboard onto a gurney. They could hear sirens in the distance, hoping the sound meant Bobby had managed to find an available aid car.

Eddie grabbed onto Buck’s hand again, his grip loose. “I love you.”

Buck swallowed, tears threatening to fall as Hen and Chim studiously avoided looking at him as they monitored Eddie’s vitals.

“And I love you.”

Eddie grinned a little, teeth shiny with blood. “And I want you to know-”

“Stop it, Eddie, you’re gonna be fine.” Buck shook his head, tears falling in earnest now.

“-’m so glad I got to marry you.”

“What?” Chim interjected, Hen and Bobby wearing matching looks of stunned silence.

“Best-” Eddie choked again, wheezing as more blood dripped from his mouth. “Best decision I ever made.”

Buck laughed wetly. “You aren’t getting out of this that easily. You’ve been shot four times, you can handle one little explosion. You can’t make me widower; I haven't taken out an insurance policy on you yet.”

Eddie snorted, wincing in pain. “Rookie mistake.”

Buck kissed his hand as the aid car approached. He turned to Bobby, Hen, and Chim. “Um, I’m gonna ride with him.”

Bobby nodded. “Of course, we’re right behind you.”Buck hovered as they loaded Eddie, climbing in after him. He wanted to tell them something, anything, like ‘we were going to tell you’ or ‘it’s only been a few months’ but he and Eddie had wanted to tell them together, so he bit his tongue and focused all his attention on his injured husband.

Eddie asking himself how could Buck be the same after the lightning strike and wondering if that means they lost the something that they had before. Telling Buck "Experiences like this, they change us. So what changed in you?" during the cemetery scene knowing full well that what changed for him when he died was that he realized he was in love with Buck, but that wasn't what changed for Buck. After being told by Buck that he feels like Natalia truly sees him. Eddie's death pushing him towards Buck and Buck's death being the reason why Eddie decided to pull away, because Buck didn't find it out and he thought it meant he didn't feel the same. I'm unwell.

“I know” Eddie says quietly, swallowing back tears as he feels the warmth and weight of Buck’s body against him. It breaks him to see Buck this way but he knows that he also shouldn’t put his own feelings aside. They share this loss. They both lost someone that they love and care about.

“I don’t know how I’m supposed to go back to work and-… And not see him there” Buck breathes out in between sniffles. He makes a move to sit back up but Eddie holds him in place and soon his arm is tugged tightly around Eddie’s middle and his head placed against Eddie’s chest, listening to his heart beating.

“Yeah, me neither” Eddie says, absentmindedly letting his fingertips trace the curve of Buck’s neck, grazing a soft curl. “I don’t think that it has really settled in yet, I know that we just came from his funeral but I don’t think I’m ready for what it means”
