🤘 SNK characters & their fave metal subgenre 🎶
as requested by the lovely Val @youre-ackermine
Mikasa: black metal. she knows every single word of every single most satanic-ritual-like song out there, that she sings with the straightest, bitchiest of resting faces. an Icon (a scary one) ex: 𝕮𝖗𝖆𝖉𝖑𝖊 𝖔𝖋 𝕱𝖎𝖑𝖙𝖍
Armin: i'm sorry, but i'm not sorry, he's a metalcore babe. LISTEN. he's a freak, ok? he just hides it well, that's all. ex: LANDMVRKS
Eren: power/heavy metal. that boy is angry and LOUD about it, and has never met an epic musical call to violence he didn't love! ex: 𝔩𝔬𝔳𝔢𝔟𝔦𝔱𝔢𝔰
Erwin: symphonic/melodic metal, sweetheart got a Classical Music Education he can't quite shake. (there are better examples for this style out there but i love these guys so i put them here!) ex: DARK TRANQUILITY
Hange: folk metal 100%!! metal from all over the world with unusual instruments and techniques for the genre, either from their own culture or others, they're just really hungry for any band that thinks outside the classic "four/five white guys in a garage" box! ex: 𝖚𝖚𝖍𝖆𝖎
Levi: proper thrash metal fan, i feel like he'd love the switch between powerful riffs/quieter rhythms with full on singing and guitar solos. might seem basic, but he knows all of the classics down to the pieces only hardcore fans have ever listened to, and even if he's open to newer stuff, nothing hits like old fashioned metal for him. ex: METALLICA
Bertholdt: rap metal, because he's a whole other kind of freak, isn't he?? don't you dare undermine "non-pure" metal subgenres in his presence because he will lose his usually collected shit. ex: 𝕭𝖔𝖉𝖞 𝕮𝖔𝖚𝖓𝖙
Reiner: alternative metal, kind of mainstream except he's truly feeling those angsty lyrics deep inside. just. let him book a therapist appointment pls?? ex: AVENGED SEVENFOLD
Annie: whatever the fuck babymetal does, that unexpected crossover between j-pop and heavy metal but she's kind of closeted about it because yk, it doesn't say Tough Girl (hopefully there are better examples of that style out there that i don't know about bc the concept is fascinating but bm live aren't... great) ex: 🪽BABYMETAL🪽
Sasha: stoner metal ftw!! she's all about those Vibes where the crowd is usually swaying more than fighting (she doesn't like pogo), plus the melodies remind her of the old rock she listened to with her dad! ex: BLACK RAINBOWS
Connie: punk rock/metal, which looks and sounds nothing more than stupid and noisy to others, but that's how our boy fights the system at his level and congratulations to him for that. he's the proper example of "chaotic good" imo and so is that subgenre <3 ex: Nova twiNs
Jean: prog/nu metal and really anything that connects to "lighter" types of music. he's t e r r i f i e d of the kind Mikasa listens to, but he's trying his best to understand. probably also a swiftie deep inside (not even that deep..) ex: 𝙺𝙰𝚁𝙽𝙸𝚅𝙾𝙾𝙻

Best New Heavy Metal Releases Week of March 17th, 2023
Another crazy week of insanely good albums. I usually try to pare down the “Best of the Week” section to only 10 albums or fewer, as I feel most people obviously don’t listen to as much music as I do and 15-20 albums in that section could be overwhelming. That being said, there are weeks that making cuts is incredibly difficult. This is one of those weeks. Saw an article this week where the lead singer of Avenged Sevenfold commented that the Metal genre is lacking in innovation and quality….certainly true in their music, but not from what I hear on a weekly basis. Somebody needs to send him a link to this site for educational purposes. That type of attitude prompted me to do this in the first place. Ill give him a break and assume he just doesn’t know any better as there are a ton of people out there that won’t listen to anything that isn’t promoted by radio. For a fan of this genre of music, that is a terrible existence that I couldn’t even comprehend. Going to keep the highlight section shorter as there are just too many incredible albums to limit only talking about 5 of them. With that segue out of the way…
Riffobia-Riffobia (Thrash)**
This has already been an exceptional year for Metal overall, but as far as Thrash goes, it has been a bit of a barren wasteland. Well, that issue is officially over. Riffobia is an old school riff heavy (guessing the point of the name?) Thrash Metal band out of Greece and DAMN do they ever lean into the almighty riff! This is old school Bay Area Thrash that will make ANYONE smile that remembers that era fondly.
Night Demon-Outsider (Traditional Heavy)**
Night Demon are hands down one of the very best Traditional Heavy Metal bands out there today. This is a genre that has gotten bigger and bigger over the last decade and the quality has ramped up exponentially. There is not a single weak album in this band’s discography and I swear they are just getting better and better. Fantastic album that will be stuck on the playlist of any fan of the genre for quite a long time.
Kamelot-The Awakening (Power/Progressive)**
There were more than a few people that were left disappointed by Kamelot’s last album (The Shadow Theory), me included. That being said, with the talent level in this band there was no way you could ever write them off and this album is absolute proof of that fact. This album is (In my opinion) the best thing they have done since “The Black Halo” back in 2005. I, for one, am absolutely thrilled to see/hear this.
Ethereal Sin-Time of Requiem Part 2 (Melodic Black/Power/Symphonic)**
This mixture of Black Metal and Power Metal has really been taking off lately. Brymir had one of my favorite albums of last year and Ethereal Sin is in that same vein with some added Symphonic flourishes. if you are into this genre, this is a easy decision recommendation. Catchy as hell Melodic Black Metal or aggressive as hell Power Metal, whatever you want to call it, its great.
Suotana-Ounas I (Melodic Black/Melodic Death)**
There have been quite a few bands melding different genres together with great results. Usually, however, there is a one genre that dominates the other to a certain extent. That is not the case here. This is probably the closest 50/50 split I have heard of Melodic Black and Melodic Death Metal. This really feels to me like what Dark Tranquillity would do if they made a Black Metal album.
Thunderspell-Thunderwarriors (Heavy Power)**
This almost didn’t make the highlight section as the production needs some work (It’s not terrible by any means) and it is straight up Legacy of Kings era HammerFall worship, but damn, this is just too damn catchy to deny it a spot.
Mystic Circle-Erzdamon (Melodic Black)**
I really liked Mystic Circle’s self-titled album from last year but more than a few were luke warm on it. I’m not sure if this will change minds but I feel this is a step up from last year’s album in every way. Leaning more heavily into the Melodic part of their brand of Melodic Black Metal with less emphasis on keyboards was a great way to go.
Foretoken-Triumphs (Melodic Death/Symphonic)**
Three songs into this album and I was online ordering the vinyl. You would think that made my “Pick of the Week” a straightforward choice. Unfortunately, it wasn’t as I have a couple of other albums from this week also on preorder and since Night Demon will play a show near me in less than two weeks and I’m hoping to pick up their vinyl there. This is definitely Melodic Death Metal but it is some damn HEAVY Melodic Death. All of this heaviness is perfectly countered with some absolutely superb solos. The overall guitar work on here is damn near flawless. I ended up making this my “Pick of the Week” as all things being equal, it was simply the album I came back to the most. I easily listened to this album close to a dozen times over the week and I can not wait to get this one on vinyl.
That will do it for this week. I will apologize for the length of the post this week but I couldn’t help it. I HAVE to highlight great albums when they are this deserving. Go out and support some of these bands when they are in your area. It will make your life infinitely better, guaranteed. Until next week, and as always,
BANG THY HEAD!!!
All worthy of a listen if you like the genre
*= standout in that genre
**=best of the week regardless of genre
Best of the Week
Foretoken-Triumphs (Melodic Death/Symphonic)**
Riffobia-Riffobia (Thrash)**
Outlaw-Reaching Beyond Assiah (Black)**
Suotana-Ounas I (Melodic Black/Melodic Death)**
Mystic Circle-Erzdamon (Melodic Black)**
All Against-The Day of Reckoning (Thrash)**
Kamelot-The Awakening (Power/Progressive)**
Ethereal Sin-Time of Requiem Part 2 (Melodic Black/Power/Symphonic)**
Narnia-Ghost Town (Neoclassical Power)**
Night Demon-Outsider (Traditional Heavy)**
PLC-The Gates of Castle Black (Melodic Death/Thrash)**

Before I post my Mini gyutaro ficlet have some Headcanons 💚💚💚💚💚💚
These will have a couple NSFW headcanons as well. the text will be highlighted green !!!!!! Don't worry it's only a couple but I'll post another one with more NSFW SUBMISSIONS
also this will probably be long but if you don't mind that please feel free to read!!
•Modern AU setting where gyutaro and Ume go to school with you.•
I see gyutaros clothes atire outside of his school uniform being either grunge/punk metal styles.
I'm talking baggy comfy coats/hoodies, ripped jeans any color, bamd tees wife beater tanks and some shirts with sleeves ripped open to show his sides wearing a chain necklace and has a chain attached to his wallet. You never see him without his chained wallet or necklace.
His wallet is black leather with a authentic real silver skull.
He paints his nails either black, green or dark blue
Has a couple of tattoos he keeps hidden underneath his school uniform Shirt sleeves. Outside school he shows em off.
One arm is a full sleeve I see it being the band members of slipknot
And the other arm is just a tattoo on his forearm of the Juggalo. (insane clown posse mascot with the signature hatchet)
He wears heavy boots some studded and others plain and Maybe. MAAAAYBE he'll wear cowboy boots. Hafta be black in color or he won't wear them and he always tucks his jeans inside them. If he's on a date with you he'll wear the jeans over the boots.
He also regularly shops hot topic wearing all kinds of band tees
Avenged sevenfold ICP slipknot FFDP to name a few hard rock and metal but cannibal corpse also for when he's in a death metal mood.
He wears very nice smelling cologne. Like the type that when he walks past you it makes your head dizzy and you swoon just wanting to take a bite outta him. (You ever walk past a guy and he just smells.... So freaking good ya wanna ask for his number? Yeah that kinda good smell)
He loves his sister and would do absolutely ANYTHING for her I see him working two jobs so he could buy her (and you) anything you're guys hearts desire wants. You want that entire manga collection. He bought it ☑️ Ume wants a whole new makeup set from Jefferry Starr? He bought it ☑️ you guys wanna go to that really expensive restaurant that recently opened? Wear your best clothes ☑️ he also spent money on designer clothes for you and Ume I'm talking Prada and Versace type a shit. He takes care of his sister and his girlfriend/boyfriend
They currently live with their mother (father(s) unknown he took off after ume was born but he's not Gyus birth father) she's not very nice company so 9/10 you'd see Gyutaro and Ume hanging a little after school hours before leaving to do something before coming back home around 10 or 11 pm. Maybe even later. (They try to wait until their mom is asleep to come back home. And try to be gone before she's even awake or coherent bless them someone take them away)
Gyutaro drives a motorcycle I see him with a Harley Davidson. He paid good money on it and it's his pride and joy second to Ume. If your his neighbor, (either dating or not for this let's say not) you'll catch him in the garage working on it around the clock, fixing tires or any other maintenance it needs and then finishing off with a gorgeous chrome shine. Babes I have sparkles in my eyes.
He always catches you watching him in the corner of his eye and softly smirks to himself cockily. he'll even deliberately stretch to show his tats and muscles. Him covered in grease. (Ooooh I'm sweating like a women fanning herself during Sunday church. Mmmm 🥵🔥)
Please walk up and bring him tea or even lemonade. He'll act annoyed you're there. And try to tell ya to buzz off. But secretly loves it. Takes huge gulps on purpose so you can watch his Adams apple Bob with the motion. Sweat dripping down his neck.
Lord there is a birthmark riiiight there below the Adams too... Please ask him to kiss it. ~ you'll thank me later.
His ears are also pierced has a tongue piercing and... Also has a Jacobs ladder mmmmm 😋 but you won't be able to find that out until you both are getting down and sexy. It's quite a nice surprise indeed 💞
He fucks you to Rob Zombie and In this Moment
When you finally worked the courage to ask him out it took him awhile to accept that someone genuinely liked him enough to have a serious relationship with yeah he's had some flings but they didn't want to date him after and he fkt used to that ya see? . But After being such a dick to you trying to push you away he made up for it by taking you for a nice ride on his bike. So scenic when the sun is setting. Just you, Gyutaro and his bike. Ofc he makes sure Ume is either at home or with friends before making this last minute trip. But the action counts and you fell even deeper in love with him for it. You both have been inseparable ever since.
Talking coffee dates movie dates at his or your place study sessions together. But Please be patient with him, he just worked a double at his second job he's sorry for constantly dozing off. Really!
It's just your voice is so soft and calming it helps him finally relax. He's so far behind on studies and homework he wants to get the shit over and done with but damn he's so exhausted. EYYY I saw you finish his homework for him. Simp 🙄. The audacity (jk I'd do the same).
He likes to listen to Die Antwoord for when he's feeling ina goofy mood. Please he's so cute when he's in a goofy mood after getting his 8 hrs and some coffee (maybe even an energy drink for good measure) when he's not sluggish juggling two jobs and school he's more playful not that he isn't playful before but this particular mood he's more soft and relaxed. Happy. He'll play wrestle you anywhere and tickle you till you almost pee yourself.
He watches shows like Rick and Morty Breaking Bad and the Punisher favorite movies are Jurassic park and any film with Vin Diesel And The Rock Johnson also a huge fan of wrestling/UFC and car shows loves racing ones too.
This is just my personal headcanon but I see him smoking cigs and being a pot head. Come on the shit he deals with with his mom is enough to make a nun swear!;but if you want him to quit those he will though for your sake. You worry over his health constantly babe. Don't worry it'll be okay.
One time when his mom went to a 'friends' house for the weekend he felt comfortable enough to ask you if you'd like to spend the night at his place. You were so excited you showered put on your cutest jammies and packed some clothes and necessities. He walked around your room looking at group photo's you took over your life. Some mirages of when you went to a carnival some pictures you took at school friends doing weird goofy shit. One picture caught his eye. It was a group photo you took of you Ume and Gyutaro going to the movies to see the nee fast and furious film that came out(lawd what # we on now? Fast 50???lol) his eyes were glued to it. It was a little before you asked him out Ume had invited you to come along because you let ger cheat off you in class, you all were huddled together in front of the movies poster had peace signs up Ume in the middle Gyutaro on her left and you on her right. But what he finally noticed was you. Ume was looking straight at thr camera with her tongue out, But Guytaro and you were looking at eachother a soft smile on your face while Gyutaro had a slight smirk. Huh. ' When did We look at one another?'
His fingers grazed the photo hung up on the wall while you were rustling about in the bathroom. When you walked in you saw him looking at the photo and walking to stand next to him. You both were quiet for a long while before Gyutaro Finally spoke up.
"(Name). " your head shifted to look at him. "Yes?." His pinky links with yours. "I think that, when we graduate. I wanna marry ya. And take you and Ume away from this place."
(A/N: that's it for now. If you want more I can definitely post more!!! ^^ love ya kitty meow meows 💋😘💋😘).

What are the animatronics' music preferences?
Freddy: Oh I enjoy a wide variety of genres. Usually I stick with some kind of alternative-indie, pop, or EDM. One of my favorite bands is Red Hot Chili Peppers!
__________________
Chica: I LOVE music from the 80s, or has that vibe to it! Like workout music! Songs you can get your body moving to! Oh especially synth-pop and new wave type music! I love A-ha and Duran Duran! Oh! I also love a good musical! Little Shop of Horrors, Heathers, Sweeney Todd, they are all so awesome to listen to and I will be singing them all the time!
__________________
Roxy: I'm more into the metal scene. Screamo, post-hardcore, grunge, things like that. Avenged Sevenfold and Sleeping With Sirens are some bangers! I'll listen to Three Days Grace at times too. Alt-rock is also something I'm into.
__________________
Monty: I really like folk and jazz music mixed in with rock or alt-rock. Also swing music at times. My go-to band to listen to is Poor Man's Poison or Bid Bad Voodoo Daddy, but recently I found The Devil Makes Three and that band is really cool so far!
__________________
Sun: I usually listen to instrumentals or video game music! Things I can play in the background while doing things without getting too distracted by the music! Whenever Moon plays a game I'll listen to the soundtrack and pick songs I like that show up to add to a playlist. I really like the Bugsnax soundtrack and also the music in Just Shapes and Beats! I also listen to classical music from time to time, mainly piano like Beethoven.
__________________
Moon: I don't know... I just hop from one thing to the next. I don't care too much about what is being played. I'll listen to country, fold, hardcore rock, death metal, lullabies, EDM, anything really..... Though, I have been drawn to more uh... messed up music recently. Things with disturbing messages and themes, kinda like horrocore or something I think. Bands like Will Wood, Dr.Steel, and Creature Feature have been in my music rotary recently.
__________________
DJMM: As HARD as it may be to believe, but I like EDM haha! Electronic music has always been my favorite! Dubstep, electronica, House, EBM. Oh! Actually, I do also like industrial music! Which does have electronic properties to it, but it leans more towards rock and punk! It really is an aggressive style but in a very good way! My preferred bands right now are I Will Never Be the Same and Circle of Dust, but I'm sure it will change soon enough considering I was just listening to Celldweller a whole lot before finding those other bands!
__________________
Mapbot: I have been informed by the DJ that my music taste is known as glitch, breakcore, or experimental. I listen to two different artists when given the chance to request a song. They are as followed: Nero's Day at Disneyland and Lauren Bousfield.
__________________
[Had a lot of fun with this! Found a lot of new music to listen too as well! Since Bonnie and Foxy aren't here to answer, I'll answer for them.
Bonnie liked swing and jazz music along with classical. He listened to people like Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. Though he would happily listen to other genres as well, but he never cared much for EDM that was way too electronic. Like he can stand Daft Punk but not so much someone like Skrillex.
Foxy, like DJ, is pretty obvious in his choice of music. He loved sea shanties, but would also listen to acapella. The Longest Johns and The Jolly Jogers were people he loved listening to because of how they sang sea shanties. He definitely did also listen to musicals with Chica though! The two of them would sing for hours, especially duets.]

the audacity of people who listen to a band’s breakout mainstream hit from their fourth album and say “they’re not metal they’re pop” is ludicrous to me
five finger death punch had three albums that were most definitely classifiable as metal before the wrong side of heaven hit, and people took one look at the music video and decried them as dudebro pop
avenged sevenfold had a hardcore punk album, then a metalcore album, then a heavy metal album, then an alternative metal album, and then nightmare dropped which had so far away and buried alive which lead people to decry them as dad rock and then wrestlemetal after they were in black ops 2, then they became a prog rock band BECAUSE JIMMY WAS FUCKING DEAD. that’s like getting mad that …and justice for all had no bass since it was right after cliff died… wait shit-
ghost has had several albums out, albums that have metal songs on them. oh but they got popular on the radio so that means they’re shitty pop. metallica, nine inch nails, ozzy, soundgarden, RATM, tool, deftones, korn, slipknot, they’re all in the same boat, all grammy winners, all well deserving of the honor, all metal (or metal-adjacent, but to be fair chris cornell’s never been pigeonholed to one genre in any band he’s ever been in). all shit on by opinionated dickheads.
motorhead, slayer, judas priest, iron maiden, tenacious d, mastodon, and obviously Black Sabbath, well, nobody would EVER speak against those bands. even though ghost legit fits right next to all of them. look me in the eyes and tell me that ghost wouldn’t fucking open for Black Sabbath. ESPECIALLY SINCE FUCKING POPPPY IS METAL NOW TOO.
(also holy shit body count won this year, good for you ice t)
and for good measure, fuck it. faith no more, queensryche, anthrax, megadeth, suicidal tendencies, helmet, ministry, white zombie, public enemy (with anthrax, but hey hip hop and heavy metal have always been best friends, again, just look at ice t), rollins, gwar, alice cooper, corrosion of conformity, rammstein, marilyn manson, system of a down, pod, stone sour, cradle of filth, hatebreed, killswitch engage, mudvayne, shadows fall, lamb of god, as I lay dying, king diamond, machine head, dragonforce, dream theater, volbeat, sevendust, gojira, periphery, august burns red, code orange, meshuggah, between the buried and me, deafheaven, trivium, underoath, candlemass, death angel, I prevail, in this moment… these are also all in the same boat. close enough to metal to count. unless you wanna argue with the fucking grammys. you wanna dispute ghost? okay.
dispute mike patton. dispute mike muir. dispute rob zombie. dispute chuck d. dispute marc hudson. go on. I dare you.
you know if this was two decades prior, people would’ve said pantera was pop after cowboys from hell dropped because domination’s breakdown is just —- —- —- —- / —- —- —- and cemetary gates is a ballad (never mind that vulgar display of power was soon to come, a triumph of the 90s, and the four albums they did before cowboys WERE FUCKING GLAM ROCK). they would’ve said type o negative was sellout pop because they covered summer breeze for a teenybopper horror movie with leonard from the big bang theory in it. they would’ve said rage against the machine were unoriginal sellouts because they did covers of cypress hill, springsteen, and fucking devo. but with the advent of the internet they can now say whatever stupid shit will make other people on the internet give them gold stars for saying the right thing.
fuck them though. sorry you hate fun and love and joy. I’m gonna have a good time listening to ghost though. because I love metal. in all its shapes and forms.
it doesn’t have to be fucking testament behemoth exodus sabaton ensiferum korpiklaani opeth carnifex dethklok or dio just to “count” as metal.
THERE, DID I “EARN” MY “RIGHT” TO AN OPINION FROM THE YOUTUBE COUNCIL OF METAL OVERLORDS???

I HAVE ARRIVED WITH AN ASK!! I've been wondering, what kind of music are you into? Also are there any specific genres/bands/songs/etc that you associate with your favorite slashers? :]
ALSO do you have a favorite ancient/extinct animal?
HOWDY FRIENDO HI!!!
Uhhhhhhhh I think I covered music okay in the last ask? Just kind of a clusterfuck of moods and genres and decades, zero consistency, lol.
AND UHHHHHH yeah I may or may not have Spotify playlists for my top 3 👀💦 I can give a quick rundown of each but cheese and crackers I am NOT linking them bc some of the songs are...embarassing 😳 I'll just uh hh share like, 6 songs off each instead..? 😈
===
Michael Myers (Rob Zombie's Halloween)
Love You to Death by Type O Negative//Swamped by Lacuna Coil//Panic Room by Au/Ra//Bullet with Butterfly Wings by Smashing Pumpkins//Ratfinks, Suicide Tanks and Cannibal Girls by White Zombie//DOOM 3 by Nemistide
---
ChromeSkull/Jesse Cromeans (Laid to Rest)
Twisted by MISSIO//Helena by My Chemical Romance//A Little Piece of Heaven by Avenged Sevenfold//Black Wedding by Meg & Dia//E-GIRLS ARE RUINING MY LIFE by CORPSE//Love Me Dead by Ludo
---
Chop Top Sawyer (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2)
Beautiful Disaster by 311//Devil's Haircut by Beck//Backwater by Meat Puppets//Zombies Ate Her Brain by The Creepshow//Travelin' Soldier by The Chicks//Buttercup by Jack Stauber
Idk if that says anything me or my taste in music or if literally anyone else on the planet thinks these fit them but oh well lol
And uhhhh my favorite ancient/extinct animal is kinda tricky since I know jack shit about megafauna and haven't known all my dinosaurs since I was like 7, but I really like this fella, the Giant Horned Tortoise!
I already love turtles/tortoises, but I bigass one with metal af horns?? AND a long tail?? FUCK YEAH, just...
fuck yeah.

10 albums that influenced my taste and made me a music snob (with commentary):
1. Linkin Park - Meteora
I think I’ve already talked about this, but I was in my early teens when this album came out, and I had a classmate that liked rock(ish music) so I went to the local CD shop that sold burned CDs (we won’t talk about it, 90s and 00s Macedonia was in a different century than the rest of the world) and asked for something cool and rock, and they gave me this CD. Now, like the nosy music nerd I was, I decided to play it once before I gave him the CD. Long story short, loved it so much, ended up buying him a picture frame and keeping the CD for myself. The angst in Chester’s voice and the tiny electronic twists together with the dark tunes made my teenage years (and still do) bearable.
2. Kyo - Le Chemin
I was maybe 9 when I first heard these guys on TV and fell in love with the guy in the red shirt. This was around the time I started understanding a bit of French and it certainly helped when a few years later I found a copy of this baby in our local French Institute. I’ve been listening to a lot of French music throughout the years, but nothing compares to this album. It made me understand emotions in French if that makes sense. There’s always a dark undertone to every song and I love how Ben’s able to infuse his voice with enough desperation/anguish/urgency while still talking about love.
3. Maroon 5 - Songs About Jane
Early teens again, on a vacation in Montenegro, bought it from a shop right off the beach lmao. The cover looked dope, and it was 2 euros. Mainly bought it because I loved that there was Jane in the title, a male name in Macedonian, also the name of the guy I had a crush on. When I went back to camp, he played it for me and he liked it as well (he was an employee there and a biiiiiiiit older than me). Little did I know that the syncopation, the embellishments and the raw energy Adam sang with in (only) this album was gonna make me compare every pop album to this one for years to come. This is like IT for me when it comes to pop music, even if it’s not entirely pop.
4. Six Pack - Minut Cutanja
I was 13, my brother wasn’t at home, so I decided to raid his computer for music. “Borrowed” a lot of punk music and this album which was titled just Six Pack. I didn’t really listen to Serbian music (tbh, I turned my nose at it bcs I thought it was something older people did, or ppl with no taste), let’s just say that living in a post-Yugoslavia world as a kid was fkn weird (@httpsgfg might agree). But there’s this song called 2 Minuta Straha (2 Minutes of Fear) which served as a soft transition to punk (punk-rock) for me, and consequently heavier rock and metal. Like, it’s such a great album, and made me open to finding other ex-Yu bands that sounded modern before their time.
5. Opeth - Blackwater Park
It was late 2007 and I made my first friend in high school (other than the ppl I already knew). She was this goth type that had a brother in a band and she listened to a lot of the music he listened to. Long story short, she showed me Bleak and that was IT for me. Loved the oriental vibes, the distorted guitars and the growls so fkn much. To this day I’m a growl > scream girl, and Mikael Akerfeldt’s to blame. Like... his growl is so smooth and homogenous, I love it, and wait until you hear his clean vocals. Top that all off with the jazzy solos and acoustic-sounding guitars, just makes it all so perfect damn it!
6. Avenged Sevenfold - Avenged Sevenfold
2007-2009 was definitely my a7x moment. I started my journey with Waking The Fallen, but The White Album (self-titled) was the pivotal one for me. There’s just something about the complexity of the composition, like the drums are fkn vicious, the guitars are more technical but also more melodic and the lyrics are liakfjndjflsdkjn! It’s also the album The Rev wrote some of my all-time faves like Brompton Cocktail, Afterlife and Almost Easy, and in hindsight... no, don’t want to think about it. But yeah, it set the bar for modern metal music for me.
7. Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime
Now, where do I fkn start with this one. Found it in 2009 or 2010, the peak of my prog metal days and I was just blown away that someone thought to create banger sonics with a banger backstory. Queensryche (at least those bandmembers back then) were absolutely genius in their craft, and I’m just sad they never got to make another album similar in quality.
8. Alice In Chains - Dirt
Back in the day, I really hated grunge, and if I’m being honest, I still hate Nirvana with a passion, hated the fact that musically they weren’t the best but got so famous post-mortem. I mean it’s not their fault, it’s their fans’ fault for being such dicks lbr. But in 2010 I bit the bullet and played me some AIC. I was trying to broaden my horizons so to speak, and grunge was next in line. Layne’s vocals had me hook, line and sinker. I’ve been a fan ever since and I even gave Soundgarden and Pearl Jam a chance.
9. The Police - Synchronicity
My mom’s to blame for this, she’s always liked them, and I used to listen to a lot of ska-influenced music as a kid (I still love it today). I think Synchronicity was the peak of their musicianship as a band and it’s just such an evergreen album. Like... It doesn’t sound like something produced in 1983, yknow? Sting is a mf genius.
10. Ludovico Einaudi - Divenire
The beginning of the last decade was a weird time for me music-wise. I think I wanted to make myself appear more grown-up in the eyes of ppl, and I got a lot of shit for listening to metal. So I went in all sorts of directions, from grunge, to pop-rock (ATL, Paramore that kinda thing), post-rock radio hits and even a bit of minimalist classical music and instrumentals. I used to play classical guitar, so this wasn’t really anything new, but the minimalist subgenre definitely was. I think I could classify my taste as sounding modern/timeless, I really don’t like music that’s stuck in a certain decade, and this album, or more like the song Divenire because that’s the one I’ve played the most, is exactly it. I could be 80 and still listening to this, thinking it just got released. This man is a genius.
Alright, almost 2 hrs after I first started writing this, I’m tagging: @tigerteeff @pxrxmoore @karajaynetoday @wheniminouterspace @httpsgfg or anyone who wants to do it. I guess I missed a few albums, but it is what it is.

Interview: Synyster Gates talks to Ticketmaster UK
Since the release of their debut album Sounding The Seventh Trumpet over 15 years ago, Avenged Sevenfold have grown into a contemporary metal behemoth. Their distinctive sound has been met with an equally theatrical live performance, finding the expert balance between showmanship and integrity. Led by the charismatic M. Shadows, the band are an obvious sum of their parts. Each band member brings an iconic element to Avenged Sevenfold, ultimately pushing them further towards worldwide stardom.
2005’s City of Evil saw Avenged take a step forward in creativity. Songs such as Bat Country and Beast and the Harlot offered something entirely unique, whilst the likes of mega-ballad Seize The Day nodded towards classic rock veterans without losing their modern edge. Four albums later, having surprised fans with the unexpected release of The Stage towards the end of 2016, Avenged Sevenfold are now stalwarts of arenas and stadiums across the globe.
Having headlined Download Festival once before in 2014, next year sees the band return to the top of the bill at the acclaimed spiritual home of rock. They are joined by fellow headliners Ozzy Osbourne and Guns N’ Roses, both of whom have had clear influence in developing Avenged Sevenfold’s sound. The accolade comes after the release of the deluxe edition of The Stage, due on the 22 December 2017. Having drip-fed some surprising covers throughout 2017, the record pulls them together alongside an original track and four live versions of tracks from the 2016 release.
With Avenged Sevenfold promising to bring their characteristic flare to Download Festival, once again proving their status at the top of a fresh metal crop, we caught up with lead guitarist and backing vocalist Synyster Gates to find out more.
How are you feeling about headlining Download Festival in 2018?
I’m feeling very good about it. It’s been a few years since we’ve been there and the last time we headlined it was just incredible. I mean, words can’t really describe the feeling you get after many years of playing small, small places and then moving up and then regressing at times and then coming back and, you know, bad press, good press. That was amazing, to actually re-do it. Come back a second time. I’ll have to explain it better after it’s done.
What is it about Download that keeps you coming back?
Well, number one – they have us. You’d be a fool to turn down playing Download, a legendary festival. There’s a lot of great bands that they could put on the bill, but we’re very fortunate and lucky and appreciative that they chose us. It’s really cool.
What does it feel like to stand on that stage looking out over the Download crowd?
It’s one of the coolest feelings in the world. We’re starting to headline more festivals, you know, it’s been pretty recent. So most of our career has been opening up for different people, we were lucky being main support on some of these, and it’s an entirely different feeling, you know, that all of these kids are there for you. 100% different when there’s eighty thousand and they’re there just for you.
How do you feel about playing on the same stage as Ozzy and Guns N Roses in one weekend?
I think that’s where we become completely humbled and appreciative of this opportunity because there are bands like that that could play this year, you know. And the fact that the promoters have been so so cool. Andy Copping and others have been so absolutely great and fantastic to us. And there’s our fans; if they weren’t as loud and beating down doors, going crazy, who knows…
How involved are you in the production side of the show?
Oh yeah, one hundred percent! That’s one of the coolest things. Most of us, certainly when you headline, you get one hundred percent creativity – within reason. You get paid whatever, I’m sure you can go online and figure out how much we’re getting paid, but I’m certainly not going to tell anybody. But you can easily spend within the perimeters of three things: do you want to make no money, do you want to make a little money or do you want to make a lot of money. We usually ride right in between “make a little bit of money” and “make no money”. So we’re constantly trying to figure it out. It’s always been an investment with us. We’ve always felt like, the bigger show we put on eventually we’ll get paid all the millions of dollars and then you can’t quite fathom spending the money. And it’s sort of true, you can spend all the damn money but we’re definitely paid enough to put on an amazing show. They’ll let us put on whatever we want to put on. So it’s going to be insane.
What are you planning to make this headline slot bigger than the last?
Zero details. It’s just going to be way better!
Let’s talk about the record. What led to the decision to expand The Stage by releasing covers?
Well, we’ve been wanting to do covers for a long time. We had the idea on the self-titled record which came out in 2007 and we just had so much stuff on our plate, you know, Live in the LBC & Diamonds In The Rough, the b-sides and all that kind of sh*t. And then we kind of lost ourselves a little bit, became a little lazy and just had other things going on. But this time being that it was a surprise, we wanted to add some life and longevity to the record. So we thought it would be a really cool opportunity to tour a little bit, get back in the studio, then tour a little bit and get back in the studio since we had some time off between the Metallica dates. We were really fortunate enough to get that tour, so we had the opportunities in there to really try and reinvent those songs, and have fun with them. And to surprise our fans with them.
Some of the songs you have covered might be a surprise to fans. Was that part of the plan?
I don’t think it’s so much a surprise to the fans as it is to maybe the media and certain other people. We’ve been very candid and open, some people refer to certain bands they like as guilty pleasures while we refer to them as purely influences. If you listen to the tracks on the record you can hear us meandering these different genres, fulfil this little need to get all that sh*t out, so I think the fans are well aware of that type of sh*t. I think Malaguena Salerosa was probably a unique one. I’m sure when people heard f*cking M. Shadows speaking español they lost their sh*t, but other than that they pretty much know where we come from.
You’ve been changing the way albums are released, first with a surprise album and then as an evolving record. Do you think it’s time for change?
I hope so! I’m not saying what we did was exactly right or it should be repeated, but people should buy new sh*t. In this new age of everything “now”, in fractions of entire things, everything is granular and immediate. Back in the day you’d put together a huge compendium of work, nobody knew about it, you promoted it for a long time. You couldn’t download it, you were so eager to get it because you couldn’t get it. Now you get so much sh*t, you got to find different ways of surprising people and that was the most intriguing thing, if we could keep this a secret. I mean, people know what colour your underwear is these days, so there’s no real secrets. And the fact that we’ve pulled it off is definitely one of the coolest things. We owe that to our friends and family as well as our team for keeping their mouths shut and doing a damn good job or sitting this thing out. So I hope people are creative, but you have to work with your label to make sure that everybody’s on the same page and ensure that everything is exciting for everybody.
So what are your plans for 2018, what can we expect?
Oh man, even though we’re touring like crazy I plan on it being the wind-down-year of my life. Early 2017 I released a guitar school, the Synyster Gates School, that took me five years to make with my father. My son was born. The writing of the record. And then keep writing, or keep recording, living in the studio, living on tour. I haven’t had a break in two years. I’m ready for it.

I decided to experiment with a touch of eyeshadow and foundation to wear to Bullet For My Valentine concert tonight. Well they were the opening act. It was headlined by Avenged Sevenfold. They are ok, but I definitely went for BM4V and stayed for Breaking Benjamin and Avenged. Breaking Benjamin was really good and has definitely made it to the list of bands that I want to see live again, this time maybe I will make it a point to memorize their songs. My problem with Avenged is that I don't know their music well, and I find that they rely too heavily on good hooks, their music follows very traditional structure, which is great if you love that type of stuff, but sometimes it feels like a boring song goes on too long. 😝 But I am a harsh critic because I only really like ballady stuff when I feel like crying or when I am going to sleep. At a concert give me nonstop fast paced in your face music! When I say a song feels like it goes on too long please realize this is coming from a girl who's favourite band (*cough* *cough* Opeth *cough*) has a 20 minute long song. But the difference is that it's barely the same song from start to finish. But please, Avenged fans, don't take this as an attack. I do appreciate their music and I did take my time to turn an ex onto them while we were together. They are a really good bridge for traditional music fans to get into metal and they have some phenomenal songs that I just *love*!

Which types of music or which artists do you listen to?
Hi anon! A short answer to that would be to check out my sidebar on my page - back when Last.FM was relevant they used to have a band logo generator and compiled an image full of band logos for the top bands you would listen to. I’ve kept it ever since.
Longer answer: I was never good at pegging generas. Like I’d call Green Day pop-rock whereas some would throw rocks at me and say punk (early years I can see it, not so much with new stuff). Or Bayside punk and then more rocks would be thrown and I’d be screamed at by people saying ‘they’re not punk they’re screamo’ and I never believed in screamo/emo as a fucking genera of music, period. (and as a side note: screamo and emo always felt like slurs/derogatory comments because of the way people used them around me but apparently now - on tumblr - it’s become a term of endearment? and it just doesn’t sit well with me).
Anyway - I guess pop-rock, rock, hard rock, pop-punk, what isn’t quiet metal IMO but is harder than hard rock so idk what to call it, and whatever the combo of rap and rock is called. Mostly. Like when a recipe calls for ‘a pinch of’ I’ve too got a pinch of hip-hop, indie, and garbage (I call it garbage because what the fuck am I doing? lol)
Toppers: The Used, Bayside, Fall Out Boy, Linkin Park, Green Day. Pretty Solid top 5.
Some oldies like Styx, the Kinks, Cher, Helen Ready, Simon and Garfunkel, Don Henley, Don McLean and Gordon Lightfoot and god I didn’t realize how many there are because there’s a lot more. All are leftovers from when my mom was in control of all the music.
Then there’s MY “oldies”: Nysnc, Britney Spears, Christina Aguleria (i’m too tried to spell it so i hope thats right), Backstreet Boys, S Club 7, Aaron Carter, and every disney song ever. They’re still on my iPod and I’m not ashamed. They make me happy.
There’s the bands/artists that shaped my music taste during my music-awakening back in the early 2000s - Pink, Good Charlotte, Green Day, Sum 41, Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance, Blink-182, AFI, Alkaline Trio, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, The Used, The Ataris, New Found Glory, Yellowcard, Anberlin, 30 Seconds to Mars, and Avril Lavigne.
There’s the bands that filled in my ‘somewhat harder/more screamier music faze’: UnderOath, Atreyu, Avenged Sevenfold, Saosin, Aiden, From First to Last, Bullet for my Valentine, Breaking Benjamin, and a few others I’m probably forgetting because I don’t really listen to them anymore except for Atreyu (and I would A7X but my opinion of them was kinda thrown into the fucking mud and beat to death around 07 and never quite recovered).
There’s the bands that came to me during my “I wanna be Bam Margera times”: CKY, HIM, The Rasmus, Bloodhound Gang, The 69 Eyes being the most prominent ones.
There’s the bands I used to obsess over in my late teens and no longer want to hear anymore of: Mindless Self Indulgence, LostProphets (because I just keep remembering their singer was a disgusting pedo and it’s ruined everything).
There’s the newbies: Twenty One Pilots, Icon For Hire, HAMILTON (which counts because it owns me), Arctic Monkeys, Starset, Imagine Dragons, Julia Michaels, Bastille.
There’s the super guilty pleasures: Demi Lovoto, Selena Gomez, a couple of Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber songs that I can tolerate, 1 One Direction song. A few Carrie Underwood thanks to my sister.
There’s the stuff my BFF got me into and hates that I don’t like them as much as she does since she’s pretty much abandoned everything except the bands listed below and ‘super unknown local un-signed bands’ because apparently she turned into a hipster with her music or something: Hollerado, Born Cages, A Silent Film, Foxy Shazam, Mother Mother, the Architects, Paper Tongues.
There’s whatever Hollywood Undead is but I’ve been listening since No. 5 was the only thing on their myspace and god knows why I keep coming back (because they keep getting better). lol
A fuck ton of musicals, too.
Now, this is by no way a full list. I’ll probably read through this later and kick myself in the ass screaming HOW COULD YOU HAVE FORGOT TO MENTION HOW OBSESSED YOU WERE WITH THREE DAYS GRACE? or BUT BRAND NEW SHOULD BE ON THAT LIST, TOO. or WHAT ABOUT RISE AGAINST OMFG I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU ALMOST FORGOT TO MENTION THEM.
See it’s starting already. lol
But that’s a VERY LONG AND GENERAL OVERVIEW.
Ignoring the tone of the entire thing (I just woke up and to me all of this sounded funny when I wrote it tho maybe doesn’t come across that way) music means a lot to me. I’m guessing this was brought on by my Chester Bennington post (though maybe not I’m just making an assumption) and I have posted ad nauseam about having a PERSONAL ESSAY PLAYLIST of over 120 songs that I feel could have been written about me, personally, because I relate to them so hard. Music is how I connect with other people. Truly connect with them. So if you (or anyone else) ever wants to come back and talk music with me PLEASE do. Because I can only connect so much through other media (games/tv/movies) but MUSIC is where it’s at for me. Music is what fills my bones and makes me so emotional to a point where I almost feel like the force is real and it’s fucking tearing me apart because IDK what to do with it. LOL
(side note - star wars made official playlists for all the characters and i want EVERY franchise to do that because, like I said - it’s how I connect, and omg they’re wonderful. And for the record OBVS my music taste is a combo of Anakin and Kylo with a sprinkle of everyone elses for the most part.)

[Because I’ve gotten into arguments over whether or not bands like Fall Out Boy and Imagine Dragons should be played on metal stations, and every single time I’ve said that they’re not metal (an opinion which I STILL have), I’ve been called a metal elitist. So consider my statement to be a bit of a concession so people don’t go after me, and here’s a bit of a semi-lengthy explanation as to why I said it.
Metal is a huge umbrella, and it’s constantly changing, this I know well. There are subgenres so niche that maybe only one band fits into them, or subgenres so expansive that it’s hard to define what is and isn’t within that category.
However, I also know that there are people who exist who are vehement on what is and is not metal, to a very high and douchebaggy degree. Some of them only think the more classic type of metal - think Black Sabbath and the Big Four -- qualifies, and that newer stuff, ESPECIALLY metalcore and nu metal, are not metal. The latter opinion happens to be quite popular with elitist crowds, in my experience. There are also elitists who will determine who is and is not a “””true fan””” of a given artist, usually stating that ‘unless you know x song from x album/you love x song/you can sing x song, you’re just a poser bitch’.
So when I come along and say ‘hey, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, and Imagine Dragons shouldn’t be played on metal stations because they aren’t metal’ (and don’t get me STARTED on that ridiculous Bilboard chart of the decade for rock, in which none of those top 10 were close to rock except maybe one), I get called an elitist because it makes me seem gatekeepy. Which it is, admittedly. But I doubt people would be happy if something by, say Slayer were to make it on to a country station constantly instead of a metal one, or if Primal Fear made it onto a pop station. People would be annoyed by it because that isn’t what they’re tuning in for.
Now, sure. People can make the argument that the aforementioned bands can sneak into the rock category. But playing Slayer on a country station would be jarring, same with Primal Fear. They’re too different, some would say. It’s not the same difference between rock and metal, since they sound similar. To those who would make that argument, I ask you to listen to Fall Out Boy, and then go listen to anything by Judas Priest, Van Halen, Iron Maiden, Hell even Hammerfall, Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, Blind Guardian -- do they sound similar? All the bands I mentioned are metal bands. And yet they don’t sound close to the ‘metal’ bands that make it onto metal stations. They do share similarities with each other, but I cannot hear many that they share, outside of some vocal styles.
For me saying all of this, I am called an elitist. That’s why the concession exists.]
My local Rock/Metal station:
"Put on your seatbelts! We're playing the most face melting, bone crushing, heart racing hard rock and heavy metal in existence!"
"Up next is Green Day followed by Fall Out Boy!"
#moonclaw rants about music#there is nothing wrong with enjoying the bands i mentioned#just keep them off metal stations

Person Down Below
WARNING:SOME OF THIS STUFF MAY BE OFFENSIVE OR INAPPROPRIATE AND I AM SORRY IF YOU ARE IN ONE OF THESE BANDS AND ONE OF YOUR BAND MEMBERS HAVE DIED.
So I got bored and I went onto Random.org and typed in a bunch of people from metal/rock and I was hoping to put what I did to do the Person Down Below inspired by akidearest and used the stuff that got chosen for Aki in what the person below is anyways...enjoy!
The person down below buys condoms in bulk
Chris Fehn
I literally don’t even know about this one...it’s a little awkward for long nose guy...like seriously he “masturbates” with his nose so would he like buy the condoms and put them on his nose?I don’t even know and like, what the hell would he use them for?Melissa?
The person down below is a weeaboo
Synyster Gates
NO!NOT SYNYSTER!I mean well,he used to look like a gothic weeb or something I don’y know.
The person down below is naked more often than not
Shavo Odadjian
If your just that one Shavo or System of a Down Fangirl you would probably wish this, but that is a tiny bit fitting because I think everyone except for Serj is shirtless in the Chop Suey! video.
The person down below is completely hairless down there
Shawn Crahan
I knew this was one of the sentences, and I was hoping it would not be someone from Slipknot or System of a Down, but it had to be fucking Shawn from Slipknot.
The person down below needs Jesus
John Dolmayan
I can pretty much imagine in my head from the B.Y.O.B. video when they walk into the party someone just yells to John like:”That mothahfuckah need Jesus!”
The person down below wants to watch you have gay sex
Daron Malakian
Ok,maybe it would be nice to watch Daron and Serj have gay sex honestly.
The person down below is in the mood for some rough face-fucking
Joey Jordison
Ok now I’m trying to imagine shit with Mick x Joey...
The person down below loves squirting
Slash
I’m sorry, but this is just getting so fucking weird...but seriously he’s like 51 and not gay or something.
The person down below deserves a good paddling
M. Shadows
Ok,what the hell, why did you decide to do the challenge Aki if it was gonna be so weird and gay.
The person down below eats the booty like groceries
Tre Cool
Ok,I’m actually fine with this since I hate Green Day but seriously this is so hilarious!
The person below likes being fondled in their sleep
Mick Thomson
Ok,if he did get fondled in his sleep it would probably be Joey or Stacy or Jim...
The first person below wants the second person below to sit on their face
Johnny Christ
Mike Dirnt
Ew,please no fucking Johnny x Mike or Avenged Sevenfold x Green Day shit hell fucking naw,but the other way around...double hell fucking hell naw.
The person down below is a meme god
Jim Root
When I saw this I literally just sat there for a few minutes laughing, but secretly I think I might have a little bit of proof for this because of all the Slipknot memes out there but fucking Jim hell yeah.
The person below’s ass is bigger than Nicki Minaj’s x10
Craig Jones
I wish I never used my precious time to do this challenge, but seriously,Craig Jones got booty? He got backstory?Seriously I think his head is bigger than his entire body, telling from this one meme I found on Deviantart.
The person below enjoys gulping down several gallons of hot milk
Buckethead
I know he’s not really metal or rock that much but I couldn’t think anyone else,I looked at the list and saw that it was Buckethead and then the sentences and...omg how much I cringed...
The person below needs a bath. And to have sex in that bath
Dimebag Darrell
Ok,I guess this is okay for fangirls or for the people who ship him with some other member of the band, but why did I do this,he is dead so hallelujah I can’t believe this for long. And I also put another dead person in this who is Paul Gray and Randy Rhoades.
The person below has a unique appreciation for fists
Randy Rhoads
Oh god.Ew.I shouldn’t have ever did this.Hes dead but,ew.
The person below wants their asshole ravaged
Ozzy Osbourne
I mean,if he was high,I guess it would be fine.Damnit Ozzy fangirls, just please.
The person below needs to purchase more birth control

Heavy Metal Healed My Heart
Let me share with you all my story. (I apologize in advance, it’s a long one).
I have always found comfort in music and can get obsessed with one particular song or band for months. Prior to discovering metal, I was really into classic rock and the Backstreet Boys (I know, but let me have my guilty pleasure). Classic rock was just something I enjoyed more than other genres of music. I could jam to some pop, appreciated jazz/classical, exercised to hip-hop/rap, and enjoyed soundtracks.
Music and reading are my escapes from the world around me. Since I turned 15, I have had a difficult life. Sure, it’s taught me a lot about myself, but it’s also a lot more than one person should have happen to them in a six year span.
My senior year of high school (the very beginning so 2013), I was reading a book whose name I can no longer remember. Before the book even began it said to look at the lyrics and listen to “Dear God” by Avenged Sevenfold. So I did. I fell in love. The music video was sweet, the lead singer was ridiculously attractive and the song was powerful. I didn’t explore much further than that though.
My first year in college, I went through a period where my knee was injured. Instead of delving into the classic rock I had grown up on, I decided to look more into this Sevenfold band. Hail to the King had come out almost a year ago and the second song I ever heard by them was “Hail to the King.” It was so different from “Dear God” but I still really, really enjoyed it. And thus, a love for heavy metal/metal was born.
I started looking into all of their songs. At first, I only bought the ones I could actually jam to. By the end of my freshman year, I owned all of HTTK and the white album.
My sophomore/junior year (graduating a year early so my hours are weird), I was having this weird stomach pain (turned out to be ruptured cysts and an appendicitis) and turned to A7X because I thought their lyrics were really powerful. That semester (Fall 2015), I fell in love with City of Evil and Nightmare.
Now it’s Spring 2016 and I’ve fucked up my knee really good (surgery for that June 14, 2016) and again, the guys are what are keeping me sane. I now own all of their albums from STST all the way to HTTK and I’ve bought tickets to see them at Texas Mutiny in Sept. 2016.
Fast forward to the knee surgery, and I’m a miserable bitch. I can’t use my leg for four weeks and I’m basically a small child again. I am frustrated and bitter and just downright mean, but have found solace in Sevenfold and in music. Their music kept me sane and from there, I started expanding my metal music. I got into Metallica and Pantera a lot that summer. Eventually, I was listening to Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Sevenfold was still my favorite, they always will be, but I was expanding.
Now it’s Fall 2016 and I’m thinking all my health issues are put to the side. I’m going to PT and doing my second to last semester in college and doing my RA job. PT is rough but metal is getting me through it. My best friend and I went to Texas Mutiny (I took some fucking amazing pics) and my love for my boys grew.
Oct. 30, 2016, I am fucking miserable. I puked while working and my friend rushed me to the ER. Four hours later, I have an ovarian cyst the size of my freaking UTERUS. I am shook. How is that even possible? How does a cyst get that big? Once again, I turned to music to calm myself down. I found solace in The Stage. That album was pumping me up throughout dealing with all the doctors. I got my surgery (five cysts were removed, five!) and felt better knowing that I came out of it alive.
That has to be it, right? I’m now a full on metalhead. I love it! I can’t get enough of this kind of music. The lyrics are so powerful and have so much meaning or they don’t and it just has an electric beat. I’m getting other people into Sevenfold or other metal and then it happens.
The pain in my ovaries comes back (turns out the cysts are back and I’m intolerant to my BC). But it gets worse. On 1/21/17, my hands decide to stop working.
To sum it up, I can’t fully bend or flex my fingers, they are often too stiff to write, type or hold a camera, my wrists ache, my elbows ache, my forearms hurt, lifting anything feels like it weighs way more than it actually does, and my hands get freakishly cold as well as reacting poorly to temperature changes.
I am an author (just signed a book contract) and a photojournalist (about to graduate) who has lost her hands. Doctors can’t figure out what’s wrong with me. They are giving me scary options, even the best case scenario is still too terrifying to even think about. And I still have my boys, my bands that saved me.
Though I am completely terrified of the results (have to wait til March), I have found solace in Sevenfold and my heavy metal. My goal is to one day write Sevenfold’s biography (if they want) and to be a concert photographer for metal bands (hopefully A7X). HOWEVER, I am completely scared that I can’t do it anymore. All my money is going to my health, and all I want is to see my boys again before the pain in my hands gets to be too much or before I have to do one of the scary options.
Heavy metal healed my heart, but I still need thoughts, prayers, and good vibes.

I can’t live without heavy metal
Contador Harrison is a heavy metal aficionado and can’t live without listening to the likes of Darkthrone, Behemoth, Between the Buried and Me,Avenged Sevenfold, GWAR, Gorguts, Immortal, Twisted Sister, Children of Bodom, Sepultura, Celtic Frost, Lamb of God,Dream, Theater, Korn, Bathory, Mercyful Fate, Helloween, Overkill, Type O Negative, Kreator, Rammstein, Venom, Queensryche, Morbid Angel, Napalm Death, Exodus to mention but a few. When a Danish female friend told me she can’t stand heavy metal because its too loud, too aggressive and there’s plenty of annoying screaming, I couldn’t comment. She is among the type of female and male species that have never understood what heavy metals is all about. In a nutshell, heavy metal is the only kind of music that helps wipe out emotions like anger and depression. When I listen to the likes of Judas Priest, Megadeth, Motorhead, Iron Maiden, ACDC, I get inspired and calmer. As my heavy metal addict uncle who’s heavy metal library remains one of the most extensive I’ve ever seen used to tell me, heavy metal regulates depressing moments and invigorates positive emotions.I know whenever the moods are low, the best avenue for me to manage it is to listen to highly arousing heavy metal tracks, which helps match my emotional situation.I listen to a lot of heavy metal especially tracks with with faster riffs, distortion but for my Danish female friend who always tell me that’s screaming rubbish, its not her cuppa tea. Am well aware that different music genres appeals to different people for different reasons, it’s often an intangible thing. She likes the 60s, 70s and early 80s type of pop as well as Danish Folk music. Unlike her, I don’t call her choice trash but can’t spend more than a few hours listening to such but for heavy metal, forever on my playlist.
A Swedish female friend who every now and then shares a track for me to listen, always reminds me why heavy metal is different. She is a great listener of heavy metal, likes the loud and confronting sounds just like your blogger. It’s not like she’d have heavy metal playing gently in the background in the throes of passion like Danish female friend would with James Brown.Unlike pop music, heavy metal distorted guitars crunching and wailing is only perfected by talented types and not some computer enhanced singing. There’s no doubt I’m in awe of how rockers create such incredible sounds with a guitar, thats pure talent. Then combine that with their singing prowess, and if you think I’m plain stupid arguing, just try to do what heavy metal guys and girls do in metal bands and you will see how good they are and can bet my neck that your voice would be cut in few minutes. Being a heavy metal rockstar takes plenty of efforts, sacrifice, practice, training, correct technique and skill. Can you imagine a life where your not aggressive? End results are known from poverty to being hopeless. This world we live in demands aggression and heavy metal is aggressive by nature. That aggression speaks to me like any human being does. Heavy metal bands generates so much power, so much joy with their music that makes me move, just like any other kind of music does to different people. The skillset that heavy metal musicians have enables them to play any kind of sound that moves us the audience, that’s what drives me emotionally, through tough and rough times in my life.Heavy metal will never die because its the music of the people.Of cause not everyone likes it but unlike pop, reggae, soul, hip hop and the likes, heavy metal has no delusions of grandeur, it is not plastic or manufactured, it’s bluntly passionate, raw, honest, heartfelt. Metal rockers music is an indication of what’s inside them. Its bloody cool and I will always buy and listen to it until I’m a sepulchre resident. This article first appeared here
