FIRE ARROWS!!! this ask has given me the chance to rant about fire and ice arrows in wind waker (not long i promise lol) i love how they are given to link in the game, because in most games you get them as an item rather then them being gifted to you by a fucking fairy queen, so while they always use magic (other than botw/totk ofc) i like to think link in ww sets them himself due to him getting the power from a fairy. wind waker link is MY son so i to choose the hcs

as for other parts of the game i love. ough. where do i start. i personally love the wind waker mechanic itself, i know it could probably get repetitive for some people but i just love the sound design of it. sailing around the ocean is really cool too, and i recently completed the map in the game and had a blast just sailing around to the different islands.

outside of like atmospheric likes for the game i love the style and the cutscenes and story :) everyone in the game really feels like they have their own personality, even though the true amount of people you interact with is very limited. the pirates are genuinely some of my favorite characters in the whole franchise, i think it was an awesome idea to make the “zelda” of the game so strong (though i have many gripes with how tetra is handled immedietely after the reveal, i think she could have communicated with us through the gossip stone more cuz be real she was probably bored as fuck in that room until she got kidnapped)

music is a 10/10 but thats like. obv for every zelda game.

im ranting way too much but if i had a specific favorite scene it would probably be where you get to heal link’s grandma :) i love her so much shes so sweet and reminds me of my own late grandma in a way so u bet that i rushed to get a fairy to her asap lmao

Augh.. ough... lately Ive been stricken with sleepy bitch disease(, I say, as if this is not a chronic lifelong struggle).

I'm thinking about taking a full week off soon, because I haven't done that in a while. It's also my birthday next month, so the timing would align with the stars. I have to converse with my work clients to clear my schedule first though, so... No time off confirmed as of yet, but I'll be working towards finalizing it.

Anyway.

I worked more on my ghost text effect, and made it so I can fill the entire screen if I want. I also kinda brute forced an outline by replicating the letters a whoooole bunch - I might want to add an additional layer above the letters, bc the line seems a bit thicker underneath.

I also worked some more on designing Myster's sprite. it's getting somewhere...!

And lastly, I researched and plugged in some music, sound effects, and pacing out some code (overlay appearances, text wait times, etc) into a couple Herotome scenes.

And like the implication that he's simultaneously the all-powerful God himself during the Day of Wrath, the powerful being incapable of stopping himself from reigning destruction upon "evil".

Oh hey and also, while we're unpacking terminology: Da Capo. The fact that Da Capo means the return to the Dark World, the very beginning of John's story. The fact that Da Capo also means Kayne's plan to restart the world, to "take it from the top" so to speak. Yeah...

Ok maybe I'll get some more coherent thoughts or analysis up soon, but for tonight all I've got is rambling screams inside my head. This was... GOSH, it was a good episode. This is not only my favorite episode of this season, but easily about to shoot up into my top 5 episodes of the entire show so far. Not a second went by that didn't drive forward the emotion, plot, or momentum in a compelling way. The music, voiceacting, sound design, horror, ALL of it was phenomenal. This episode is such a perfect example of how amazing this show can truly be <3

List of things you like about Linebeck? rat man <3

Oh man where do I begin.

- I have a soft spot for AH with hearts of gold, guys who are cruel in the beginning and then develop and actually are very sweet, they just had a tough upbringing. I don’t have many thoughts on Linebeck’s backstory, but he is a good person deep down, he’s just annoying <3

- his design is everything to me. Like, he looks so weird and goofy but so sexy at the same time??? Like how??? Also I love Jack sparrow and he def has a more well kept Jack sparrow vibes.

- I’m a HUGE sucker for father figures. Idc what people say Linebeck is a DAD against his will and I will not take any opposing opinion.

- his theme SLAPS SO HARD it’s amazing. It’s one of the few good songs ph has.

- I just love his relationship with Link, the nicknames he gives him, the way he talks to him, the way he carry’s Link as if he weighs five pounds. It’s CUTE. It’s not wholesome but it’s FUN

- there IS a wholesome moment in the game and that’s where Linebeck acts more serious and asks Ciela to look after Link. He cares so much for the kid and really doesn’t want him to get hurt I’m so HH

- the potential for a complex character with him is so fun. I feel like he really struggles with his self worth, he’s one of those people that act all high and mighty but he secretly loathes himself. I feel like the manga really points this out, when he’s possessed by Bellum and he’s about to kill himself, he tells Link to not be a worthless man like him. He thinks he’s worthless and doesn’t feel like he belongs. In the manga he doesn’t like being called a hero because he abandoned his crew. He has a lot of issues that he keeps hidden and I LOVE HIM.

- this man is so pathetic oh my gosh I want to marry him.

- I feel like he longs for adventure and longs to be a big named hero, but he really can’t cuz he’s not built like that. So the adventure with Link gives him a taste of that and he loves it, even if it’s scary he loves it so much.

- the music at the end of the final boss with bellumbeck, I go FERAL. The song dark waters beginning with violins playing a dark tune, then it goes into his theme showing that he’s fighting back, but then his theme starts to get more desperate since he’s losing the battle with Bellum, and then finally he loses. And then the final boss song is SOOOO GOOOD GUYS like the beginning is a dramatic version of the phantom chase, it has trumpets that sounds like Bellum’s battle theme, and then Linebeck’s theme that sounds more sad it KILLS ME OUGH I LOVE THAT WHOLE THINF

-I love how he acts on the sea cuz he’s not a coward on sea, I feel like when he’s on the water he acts how he wants to be. Heroic, brave, competent. He’s so lovely, you can tell he loves the water.

- he can’t swim, like why can’t he swim 😭😭

- this is a little personal but I loathe myself a lot cuz I feel like I’m a pathetic loser who’s completely incompetent and a worthless human being and knowing that I adore a character who is like that makes me feel a little better about myself? It’s complicated but he’s just like me fr.

- I love how before you go to the last dungeon he just, acts really sweet towards you? He tells you to have fun and to adventure and I feel like he really genuinely cares for Link and yeah. He’s such a dad fr.

- he’s such a unique character in the Zelda series. Like there’s not a lot of actual father figures hence why Rusl is also very unique to me, and Linebeck is kinda the same to me. But, I already said this in a post, he’s barely connected to Link or Bellum in any way in the game. He never knew Link, he’s not apart of some magical race, he’s not connected to the ocean king, the only thing he’s connected to is his knowledge of the ghost ship. He’s just some guy and I really love that. Unspecial characters are my favorite. And I know the manga is different but I prefer him being some guy

- we don’t know how good of a father he was but we do know he was a good grandfather 🥺🥺🥺

- in spirit tracks it seems that he did learn to embrace adventure and loved puzzles and stuff, which I think is neat.

- the ending where he wishes for his ship back, like it’s kinda cliche but it‘s so sweet 😭😭😭 he loves his ship more than treasure.

- he got found family’d HARD.

- ok there’s some parts of this scene that I don’t like but when Oshus promises him a wish and he goes full 180 and his music is super dramatic and he wants nothing more than to save the ocean king like he’s so dumb

- I love his banter with Ciela I think it’s so fun, tho I do feel like Ciela is a little too mean, they’re relationship means a lot to me <3

- when he knocks over tetra’s statue like PLS HES SO DUMB.

- he says he’s a lone wolf but he’s really not he wants friends.

- the whole thing with Jolene is so insane and so funny to me 😭😭😭

- his letter to Link after you visit Zauz is weirdly sweet to me like he can’t figure out how to put things into words and he can’t say it in person so he just puts it in a letter cuz it’s easier for him. He’s just like me FRRRRRR.

- he’s so scrunkley I wanna shake him in a pringles can.

my thoughts on godzilla minus one

tl;dr i had a religious experience (positive) and it may be my new favorite godzilla movie

i'm going to try to organize my thoughts lmao i have never done a film analysis or review

story

i went in knowing next to nothing, so i was very afraid this was going to be heavy on the imperialist propaganda and reminiscing on the "good old days" of the japanese military

however i was pleasantly surprised to see that it was quite anti-government :]

loved the delivery of the themes of "all lives being precious" and "living on for yourself as well as for the sake of others" – not hammy or blunt!

FORESHADOWING OF THE EJECTION SEAT? chef's KISS we love picking up what the movie is putting down and getting to see the payoff

speaking of foreshadowing:

me: oh no she's going to die

i spent like the last quarter of the movie with a headache because i was clenching my teeth and holding in tears after noriko's death ("death") AND koichi planning to blow himself up and orphan akiko

and all the ex-navy guys rallying together to defeat godzilla

i am not immune to classic story beats

semi-related i thought noriko would be covered in radiation burns, but then i realized a depiction of that would probably be insensitive

also the guys measuring radiation in plastic costs? come on now i know we weren't fully educated in the risks of radiation but there must've been some sort of better ppe

characters

i enjoyed like every character which is rare for me in a godzilla film

koichi just can't catch a break. this man gained so much trauma in a short amount of time, like he doesn't have ptsd because the trauma is ONGOING. i think he's my favorite and it's very easy to root for him

his introduction is of him as a shaky baby-faced pilot and then you find out he was supposed to be a kamikaze pilot like goddamn

i liked noriko's assertiveness ("hey i'm staying in your house now :)") and her ability to see kindness in koichi and sumiko

her struggle of wanting to become independent is very relatable. you could see the bittersweetness in her eyes showing that she felt guilty yet grateful for koichi's support........

i was surprised how quickly sumiko agreed to taking care of akiko? but it makes sense since she was (is) a mother and could not bear to see another child suffer, and akiko gave her life a new purpose

i would've liked more focus on the female characters and i don't think it's fair to just blame it on the era :playdead:

i really liked the chemistry between dr. noda, captain akitsu, and mizushima

dr. noda in particular felt like a nice foil/parallel to serizawa from the 1954 movie; he's also a scientist but he's much more personable(?)/"human"

dr. serizawa was my favorite in 1954 but he was very anguished and set on making reparations by killing godzilla (and koichi could be a parallel to him in that regard)

noda focused on protecting the living, not avenging the dead

ough mizushima. being a Youth who feels useless sure hits home

i'd say tachibana is my least favorite just by comparison to everyone else, but he's honestly so valid for his whole deal

visuals and sound

very elegant color grading, costuming, and set design!

the nuclear fallout when he used his atomic breath in tokyo was awe-inducing

great use of godzilla as a war allegory

i saw the movie in d-box so the shotgun-blast of heat ray was intense

also coolest godzilla death. sick decapitation

the plan to imprison him in bubbles and give him the bends felt a bit silly in the moment but highlighted how desperate everyone was for ANYTHING to work

really liked how godzilla was more like an animal or unstoppable force of nature without a clear motive

i mean the only emotion you could ascribe is probably RAGE

all of the gang works for valka's dragon sanctuary!! valka in my au is more like valhallarama from the books in that she's moreso absent for long periods of time & when she's there she's relatively detached but!! hiccup takes over the sanctuary (at like. age 15 but shhhh. valka & stoick still pay for everything but hiccup runs it rlly)

so from like, 15 to 17 the gang are learning abt dragons & begin education programs to help ppl understand dragons better!!! the dragon academy does become a thing!!!! after they graduate high school tho (yes this is all while they're juggling high school!!!) they all start kinda going separate ways (and obv eventually come back together full time but!!! it's uncertain for a while!!)

hiccup, astrid, fishlegs, & the twins get into the same university.

snotlout doesn't, he gets denied (it's a whole Thing™️ for the gang)

however they all pursue different things

hiccup, as like, predictable as this is, pursues engineering & tries to get as many certifications as possible. he's doing AS MUCH as he can, as hands on as he can. he wants to learn to be able to help make the world a better place for toothless (and all dragons!!) once he graduates he's back at the santuary full time & helps design new parts as they expand & get bigger! also new stuff for dragon care & just!! yeah!!!

in his free time, hiccup has a motorcycle he rebuilt from the ground up, loves zipping around town, he also draws, & ofc spending as much time with toothless as he can (maybe sneaking toothless out of the sanctuary.... a lot)

fishlegs goes into environmental science with minors in plant pathology & geology!!! this also ties back into dragons & their care through their environments best suited for them as well as dealing with climate change & stuff!!!! he applies what he learns to the berk sanctuary!!! he also goes back to the academy but he also works at the berk public library part time!!

fishlegs also collects so so much music, so many records, tapes, cds, 8tracks, u name it!!! he also has a rock collection ofc!!! he also spends as much time with meatlug as possible (maybe sneaks her out)!! he also gardens!! & does yoga on saturdays with astrid!!!!

astrid gets a double major of kinesiology & nutrition!!! this is more human oriented obv HOWEVER she's constantly trying to remind everyone around her to take better care of themselves for the love of everything!!! although she still is able to apply what she learns to dragon training!! u can not move the ways dragons do but motor skills are still important as well as eating right!!!! either way, dragons gotta learn this stuff to but in their own way!! she graduates & goes back to the sanctuary & helps with that!!

astrid does axe throwing in my modern au. she goes & practices often to blow off steam. also a track & field person FOR SURE!! like, discus throwing, hammer throwing, the godt damn works!! she's a weight lifter too!! i need astrid to be buff so bad!!! also yoga with fishlegs on saturdays!! she wouldn't call it "sneaking" but she does like to take stormfly out & about :)

ruffnut is pre-med and does go into veterinary school. she stays in school the longest out of the gang which shocks EVERYONE but it's what sounded interesting & it gave her a challenge. plus working at the sanctuary, u end up caring for a lot of sick & injured dragons. fishlegs helps her BUT she becomes The Medical Expert™️ & even uses the sanctuary for her dissertation & specializes in dragon veterinary medicine!!!

as for hobbies, ruff is still a chaotic being who loves destruction & explosions. she & tuff do mythbuster type shit!! she also is very much into theater!! she sometimes participates in local theater & did a performance or two in college!! i also think she longboards!! loves sneaking barf and belch out of the sanctuary!!

snotlout. snotlout, snotlout, snotlout. this boy's got it kinda rough. he gets denied from the university everyone else goes to & it hits him hard, so he keeps working at the sanctuary full time while going to community college & trying out classes that interest him, but he feels lost. he finds himself doing a lot of music oriented classes & just gets a two year degree in music. later he'll go on to be a high school band & choir director of all things but that's down the line :) before then while working at the sanctuary he works part time at a local biker bar (once he's old enough)

snotlout's hobbies are a bit of a mish mash. he plays guitar, has a harley davidson motorcycle (goes riding with hiccup!!), is in the sewing club with tuff (has an etsy store on the side shhh), & loves sneaking hookfang out of the sanctuary!! also loves american football & sometimes does hammer throwing with astrid.

aaaaaa. i like this one now so i am going to post it

so. for about five days i've committed to getting back into attempting to Do Music and i wanted to do bad apple since it's a very repetitive song which means i can spend more energy getting silly with the inst. this marked many firsts for my musical journeys that sort of reinvigorated my motivation for making covers. first time using utau for vocals, first time actually mixing the vocals w the inst (it's not perfect but the fact i actually mixed at all makes it a significant cut better than my past covers), also using a different program for the final inst to make the instruments sound better which i think paid off. more rambles under the cut.

i originally had this big ambitious plan of making four versions, 2 in english 2 in japanese done in utau and synthv. but well my frankenstein'd english lyrics from three different sources didn't end up lining up with the original length of the japanese and also after the emotional rollercoaster that was trying to tune milk in openutau i just wanted to settle with one version.

the vocalist is milk whom i discovered recently. she has her rough spots that i'm not fully used to ironing out yet but i really fell in love with her voice (and design). i originally planned for hoshino hanami to be my main vocalist (another utau i've come to love) but she didn't have that range i needed. i would like to make a cover with her though--i've got my eye on meltdown (though that may take a while ough).

i switched vocalists midway through and had to figure out milk's different quirks on the fly--like she had a completely different phonemizer and more options to pick from for voice colors and sound variants and i was still VERY new to utau and finding help online was tough. figuring out how to use her vocal fry was really frustrating even though i didn't end up using it cuz i didn't know how to make it sound good lol..... AND i was having a crisis about how i couldn't make her sound good no matter what i did and how i felt like such a fraud before i realized mixing it really is the secret sauce to making a vsynth vocal sound good. like i know i can improve on both areas but the difference really is night and day. it is because of that that i want to go back and remake some of my other older covers with this extra processing applied and actually have them reach closer to their potential.

but despite the lows i ventured i walked out of this cover more proud of myself than past projects, and that's why i want to keep trying my hand at more song covers since the process is pretty fun!! may spring back and forth between synthv and utau vocalists, both have their perks ofc but i do get a bit of a kick out of manually tuning in utau (even tho it takes forever)

though I do have a couple of plans, I could make a giant hollow hammer with a trapdoor in the bottom of it and when 3GS inevitably jumps in front of my attack I trap him in a cage (the inside of the giant hammer). if I knew how I could wake myself up if things get dire to get some time to think. since Song has currently two living shields, the warship is mostly for intimidation tbh (hence the dragon design). ooh. what if I put some sort of speaker on the hull that plays boss music. hm

if I could find the rest of the cast maybe Test Tube would be able to fix the broken MePhone X...idk.

thinking about the light dragon again. ough. going a little insane over her actually.

thinking about how she's just a pretty dragon when you look at her from far away. thinking about how when I first got close enough to see her clearly and eventually land on her back and walk to her head, I was so,,,,, disturbed?? disturbed. by her appearance. the way the eyes bulge out so significantly. the way the pupils are so contracted, the way they're set like a prey animal's eyes, the sort of sickly purple-green combo they've got going on. the too-long face, like one of those over-bred show dogs. like everything about her was a little off. but at the same time, I thought the light dragon was really, really pretty!! she's got those iridescent antlers and golden mane, and that soft glowing energy of the master sword surrounding her.

but then. when you get the master sword and see that cutscene, if you didn't already know beforehand, you almost certainly know now that the light dragon is zelda. and suddenly that distant, beautifully glowing dragon is gone. it's lost some of its beauty because now you know. you've gotten close enough to see the details. those other, more disturbing features of her face are even easier to see now, without the obscuring presence of the master sword's glow.

her design is reflective of her role and experiences in the story. the light dragon's very existence is beautifully disturbing.

she's born from the ultimate sacrifice of a woman wanting to protect those she loves; zelda gives up more than her life (I mean, there's at least an afterlife in the zelda universe as we've seen from the ghosts), she gives up her sentience. and isn't that just intrinsically terrifying?? at least if she had died, she could still be herself as a ghost. but, from what she knows when making her decision, becoming the light dragon practically erases her. of course the light dragon is so unsettling. but she's beautiful too because she only exists because of Zelda's complete and utter faith and love for her knight and the people in her kingdom!!

but man. that final memory. I think it really captures the light dragon's essence. The music, the imagery, everything in that final dragon's tear is just. so beautiful and SO unsettling. if you listen closely to the roar the light dragon makes as she flies upward, you can hear what sounds like a human scream mixed in. which is just. im not ok. i cant even pretend to be normal about that after hearing it. (If you want to try hearing it for yourself and tell me if I'm crazy for hearing it or not, listen here from around 3:17-3:22, headphones would probably help)

ANYWAY. tldr; thinking about how the light dragon's design reflects what you know about her in the story. if you don't know the story yet (haven't found/seen the tears), it's like what you see when you look at her from far away: pretty new dragon with cool blue-yellow aura. but the more you learn (the closer you look) the more unsettling it gets. and then when you get the master sword (symbolically learning the truth of who the light dragon is) then you can suddenly see everything that's so disturbing about her design now that it's no longer obscured (by the aura in the visual sense and by the player's lack of knowledge in the meta sense). am i making any sense here or am i thinking about this too hard

Summary:

I did not expect to start sobbing when i finished this game. The whole story was so fun and unique, I loved how we traveled to new places in this game. It's a very sad story but with a very heart-warming end. The art and animation was stunning and so fun, just like in Curious Village. I love that Don Paolo is just there, basically just a red herring trying to mess with Layton. I also wish Flora was in the story more instead of just being used to bring Don Paolo back. I really enjoyed the puzzles again but I def struggled a lot more with Curious Villages' puzzles. There were hard puzzles for sure but I think they were just the kind of puzzles I'm good at. I also liked the new bonus mini games... except for the hamster, I hate that rodent. Why does he sound like that he scared me and ruined beautiful moments of me admiring the scenery. But the camera was really fun to construct and the differences puzzles were genuinely really hard. I constantly struggled to find the last difference. I also loved the tea puzzle, it was so unique and it fit the Layton theme incredibly well. I love how each character has a lot of personality and how there's always more to learn about Layton and Luke. Layton is a great sword fighter??? And the shrouded origins of Luke and Layton's relationship. I cannot wait to play more and see what else the story surprises me with!

Completely Uneducated Internet Opinion after seeing Oppenheimer and Barbie

The Barbie Movie focuses on a very specific lens of misogyny that doesn't show just how pervasive and horrific it really is, and it's painfully obvious that it's selling a brand of feminism that isn't too alienating to the status quo and is very "Oh well! The Kens will have as much power as us girls do in the real world ig. Get it? 😜" It just leaves a sour taste in my mouth, but it's about as politically aware and active a multimillion dollar Warner Brothers film based on a Mattel IP can really be. I appreciate it more as a celebration of embracing all the terrible flaws and aspects of being a woman in a misogynistic world, and an abstract being deciding that it's all worth it because of the joyful and meaningful experience of being a woman and not just an idea.

It's also funny that Ken as a character eclipses and overshadows a lot of the film, since the whole thing is about feminism and the name of the film IS Barbie. But much like feminist causes in the real world, the audience focuses more on the men involved lol. A lot of that comes down to Ryan Gosling's fantastic performance though. This man understood the assignment like no actor ever has before.

Also, the costuming and set design are god tier and exactly what we need to see more of in a media landscape dominated by shitty looking CGI from un-unionized and poorly treated sweatshop artists. If you like good looking movies, watch this movie.

Ken does take over the screen whenever he's there, but Margot Robbie shines in this thing. The comparison can't NOT be made between Barbie and The Truman Show (Gerwig iirc says it was one of her main inspirations and it shows), and her performance as Barbie discovers the world she's lived in and her existence itself is a flimsy ideal is so moving. Because like Truman, she chooses personhood and freedom over certainty and safety. She chooses to become a real woman not despite the many disadvantages and pain that comes with it, but BECAUSE of the experience. She learns that there is beauty in cellulite and stretch marks and wrinkles, there is beauty in aging, there's an entire world of experiences and emotions that as a doll she could never achieve and truly feel. And seeing someone CHOOSE humanity is such a wonderful thing.

The film also indulges in the kind of campy silly shit we expected, and I can see how some viewers view it as inconsistent and jarring when it's juxtaposed with moments like America's speech. But despite how half-stepped and steeped in a very specific advertiser friendly brand of Hollywood/corporate liberal feminism this film is, I appreciate Greta Gerwig even trying to do this in the first place. If even one woman or girl comes out of this being more critical of the world around them and the ways misogyny affects us, then I'm happy. If even one man or boy comes out of this being more critical of the world around them and the ways misogyny and patriarchy affects THEM and how they view and treat others, I'm happy. You are Ken-ough (sweater now available via Mattel for $86.99 while supplies last btw).

Oppenheimer is...what you'd expect of a Christopher Nolan biopic of Oppenheimer. It looked nice on 35mm film but it's also got the sound quality issue every fucking Nolan film has, where if you don't have the exact setup he wanted for the film then so many bits of dialogue will be drowned out by music or be otherwise unintelligible. The effects showing one woman with radiation burns were so laughably bad, it was like she let a bunch of Elmer's glue dry on her face and it looked so goofy that it ruined the weight of the scene.

For a film that really tries to show how paradoxical and complicated Oppenheimer was, it doesn't exactly sympathize with him to the extent I've seen people say it does. The film shows he's a dramatic, dismissive, egotistical asshole that refuses to explain his convictions and at times you (and other characters) wonder if he even has any. And his hypocrisy is constantly pointed out by many characters. The prosecutor in the security hearing asks how and why he suddenly decided to have moral qualms about nuclear bombs when he was eager on the Manhattan Project and outright helped decide which city to drop the first bomb on. Strauss's belief that Oppenheimer wants to be a martyr seems true, whether it's (as Strauss believes) out of pure ego or (as his wife says) that he honestly believes that receiving every punishment possible will somehow lead to him atoning and being forgived.

Also if you're watching a Nolan film you're already coming in with low expectations for women characters and this is no exception. Florence Pugh's character exists to show tits, talk briefly about communist ideals only to be talked down to by the more well-read Oppenheimer, fulfill a "methinks she doth protest too much" shtick with her always tossing his flowers, show tits again, break down when he says he can't see her anymore, and then kill herself to add to his sorrow. I do like that his wife immediately looks at him and says that he can't do things like have an affair out of selfishness, disregard other peoples' feelings, and then be surprised when his behavior ruins peoples' lives and fucks him over. His wife is incredibly based and Nolan does a good job portraying how miserable she was as Oppenheimer's wife.

The film showcases his lack of empathy or regard for others until it comes back to fuck him over outside of the affair. He builds Los Alamos knowing that local indigenous tribes come up there for burial rites because they're less important to him than The Big Picture and building the bomb. The civilian lives in Hiroshima and Nagasaki are something he's prepared to destroy for the sake of this experiment and usher in a new era of scientific discovery (again, nothing is more important than that Big Picture). The lack of regard for the Japanese people, the indigenous tribes of New Mexico and the other civilians in the area is (imo) intentional because the film is about Oppenheimer. It's about how he put them, his family, and everyone around him aside to follow what he's worked in his entire life: theory. Real tangible lives were something he did weigh, and ultimately decided were worth the cost if it meant a) proving this theory b) furthering scientific knowledge and c) ushering humanity into a new era of understanding. And as disgusting as it is, it's interesting to see a film trying to dissect why and how one human being made that decision and seemingly came to regret it.

Anyway while both films are completely different animals in different universes, I think I prefer Barbie because when I cringed, it was during parts I was meant to cringe. And Oppenheimer has the scene where Floremce Pugh (naked obviously) asks him to read the Bhagavad Gita and they start fucking as he says the "I am become death, the destroyer of worlds" line and thus robs it of its actual historical context AND cheapens not just Oppenheimer as he originally quoted it...as well as cheapened the Bhagavad Gita as a whole bc. Dude. Now I want a Bollywood movie where a character reads the Bible while a woman rides him and shows tiddy for superfluous bullshit reasons.
