Noah Temel: a hero in need of savior
— how a seemingly unfit song tells us everything we need to know about the boy that cried in an abandoned bed
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Falls irgendwer andere Interpretationsmöglichkeiten hat, please do share!!
“He never ever saw it coming at all”
The song starts the way the story of Noah and Colin ends, with Noah not having seen coming that Colin would leave, that it has never been an option before. It is as surprising to us as it is to Noah that Colin is actually serious about having packed all of his bags and booking a ticket out of here. Even if Noah clearly told Colin to go, he never saw it coming that he actually would.
We can see this after Colin has already left and Noah is crying in an abandoned bed because suddenly it all becomes real that there is nothing left of his friend. He seems ignorant and uncaring when Joel first approaches him but then literally minutes later, realization seems to hit that this is now officially over. And Noah didn’t see it coming.
“It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright.”
But it is alright, no? So what if Colin leaves, what if he actually never comes back, what is it to Noah? Colin was just one other person in his life and it wasn’t like they knew each other for long. Surely Colin leaving would not affect Noah much, surely it wouldn’t hurt. He assures himself in his mind, that everything will be alright.
“Hey open wide, here comes original sin.”
Original Sin in Christianity is a term used for something that happens unfairly to the people, that people are born with and therefore, have no control over. Because Noah prides himself with thinking that everything is alright when it isn’t because he gets to firsthand experience that Colin leaving is not alright and it’s unfair that it was Noah's own pride that pushed him to leave. Noah is widely met with the impact of Colin leaving, even if it was supposed to be alright, even if it was supposed to not matter. It is just something that happens to him, the sadness and the guilt that comes with it all.
The second “It’s alright”
The singer sings it with a somewhat different tune. It sounds more doubtful. Because maybe after all, Noah slowly starts to realize that it actually isn’t alright. Because now the feeling of indescribable sadness has hit him and he can’t help but cry. This is one of the few times Noah has absolutely no control over his feelings. The first time being when he screamed at Colin that he wouldn’t care if he left. Because Noah has probably learned to keep his emotions in check but there comes times where it all breaks down; where he breaks down. And we get to see that point in this scene, we get to see when it stops being alright even if he tries to convince himself that it is.
“No one’s got it all”
This is when realization starts to hit. Perhaps love was never meant for Noah. Perhaps love was just always one of those things Noah convinced himself he will never have. Only now, that realization hurts but it’s just the way it’s supposed to be because after all, he cannot have everything. Perhaps there once was a moment when Noah thought that after everything, love was something he did deserve because how come Colin could love him despite all the rejections? But then he leaves and that feeling is gone again because perhaps Noah was just never meant for love, perhaps some people just aren’t and they have no control over it.
“And the T.Vs try to r*pe us and I guess they’re succeeding”
The TV, the media and everything on it is trying to destroy us because what we see most on the TV or in the media, what we grow up as children is mostly romance. It’s the most popular media genre, the most generic, the most accessible because it exists for everyone. This love and the portrayal of it is trying to destroy Noah. Why? Because it convinces him that he is worthy of it. Love is always on TV, it is always accessible and it is mostly happy but Noah didn’t grow up with that happy love.
“Now we’re going to these meetings but we’re not doin’ any meetin’. And we’re trying to be faithful but we’re cheatin’, cheatin’, cheatin’.”
Noah's parents separated, we know that and we know that it has somewhat of a huge impact on him because even if he grew up on happy love in the media, it wasn’t what was shown to him in real life. The repetition of “cheating” and the word in the song growing more and more quiet, sounding more defeated with each time said, could also connect to the fact that Noah has just really truly given up now.
He lays in a bed that isn’t his, that’s supposed to belong to the boy that likes him, the boy that made him feel normal and he doesn’t feel normal at all. He doesn’t feel welcome, he doesn’t feel happy, he is right back where he started; being pushed away to a place he never wanted to be in because of what his parents did. Because it’s no use. He had happiness and he had a friend and still, he lost it. Noah tried to pretend everything was normal, was alright only for it to break down on him.
“I’m the hero of the story, don’t need to be saved.”
Another popular trope in the media and on TV is the story of the hero, as well as the story of the damsel. It’s always the hurt one that gets saved, always the sad one that needs help and Noah realizes he is sad and something within him is broken because of everything that has happened to him but he doesn’t want anything to do with it. He doesn’t want to confront the part of him that is in distress because he has convinced himself that he is the Hero of the story and the Hero is never the one to be saved. Noah doesn’t need anything. He doesn’t want anything. But still, the line repeats four times, followed by “It’s alright. No one’s got it all.” because maybe, even if he has convinced himself he doesn’t need love, that there is nothing wrong if he does not have love in his life, maybe, after all, it is what he wants.
Because he does cry in Colins bed, in the bed of the boy that tried to help him, tried to perhaps even save him, and that has to mean something, right?

✨Tag Game Wednesday ✨
hi @energievie and @jrooc
Name: gigi
What is the most listened to artist in your music app of choice this month? chappell roan yall already knew
What song do you know all the lyrics to? A lot of songs honestly, i use songs to memorize things bc anything set to music embeds itself so deep in my brain - but my go to dark horse karaoke song is
What song do you pretend to know all the lyrics to and sing along to even though you don't?
bc its so catchy but i do not speak german but boy do i think i can when this comes on
or anything from kate bush bc i love her but idk what the hell she’s saying
If you were to be crowned Queen/King/Royalty of listening to a band or artist, who would that be?
honestly this one is too tough, however if it was still 2016 the answer would unequivocally be lana del rey and i don’t want to hear a thing about it
What band/artist surprises you the most on your frequently listened to artists?
sometimes when i write or work i listen to hours and hours of lofi playlists so whenever a song from that sneaks on to my spotify stats im always very confused
Favourite line from a song (or one you have been thinking about lately?
I think these lyrics are very clever and poignant
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Guilty pleasure band or song?
college drop out/ graduation and grimes 😬 i don’t think i listen to any bad/cringe music but some artists are pretty shit people
Okay let's talk fandom music:
Fave band or song you've discovered from a Fan Fic?
years and years and years ago i listened to sufjan stevens for the first time bc of a destiel fic
Fave Fanfic Playlist?
I’ll be honest i can’t really think of one, but i have one for myself since all my fics are named after songs, its linked here but hopefully it will grow a little
Fave Gallavich song?
pink and white was insane work for the prison reunion scene but at last brought the wedding to another level of grace and i loved that pick
Do you listen to music recommended by the writer or an included playlist?
sometimes! i try really really hard to but it’s difficult to travel to a secondary internet location for a fic playlist
What song do you think is Gallavich coded?
*sigh*
What’s a bop you want to share with your mutuals today?
I listen to a lot of older gen hip hop on my ride home from work bc it helps me feel relaxed so i’ll leave you with that
i was also tagged for the 5 songs from your favorite playlists game, so ill drop those as well
and the last one is bam bam by sister nancy but tumblr has an audio limit

Music in various languages
I've talked about how interacting with different cultures is good, I figure I'll also try to recommend some songs. (many songs beneath the cut). I'm going to include a couple different genres, but obviously I won't be including every.
I hit audio limit :/
Norwegian language (Norway):
[Pt: Du må ikke sove by klarspråk]. [album: du må ikke sove. shows a warped photo of Donald Trump on tv.] genre: rock / (punk?) / spoken word / social criticism. it's an antifascist song, quoting a famous illegal WWII poem by the same title "you mustn't sleep".
[PT: regn & gitar by Jomas] [album: evig kronisk. shows man looking at a garden holding a retro phone.] It's a more soft quiet song about waiting for someone in the rain.
(I could recommend many more Norwegian songs so don't feel afraid to ask if you're at all interested)
Sámi language (Norway / Sweden / Finland / Russia):
I don't have the necessary letters on my keyboard to write PT. But this is a Inari Sami song by Amoc. I don't speak that language. here are the lyrics on genius. here's a dictionary, not sure if it's the right Sámi language. The genre is like atmospheric rock or something, the instruments are amazing.
[PT: áddjá by resirkulert] [album cover: áddjá] translation: grandfather (Sámi) by recycled (Norwegian). genre: yoik/joik - a Sami Music genre which is mostly about vocal technique.
French language (France / Benin / Congo / Democratic republic of Congo / Monaco / Senegal / Switzerland / Belgium / Ivory coast ++)
[PT: Soleil noir by 47ter] [album: petit princes. Photo of three boys on stairs]. A rap song by a trio from France. It's about "a black sun" about liking the dark and rain and not liking summer.
[PT: Déprime hostile by Pogo crash control]. [album: Déprime hostile. Shows a digital drawing of a head cut open with a cocktail]. genre: punk / metal. The band is from France. The song is about hostile depression or something.
[PT: plus rien ne m'étonne by Tiken Jah Fakoly]. [album: coup de guele. It shows a face pointed towards the ceiling]. The artist is from Ivory coast (AKA côte d'ivoire). genre: Reggae. It's about colonialism.
[PT: formidable by stromae]. [album: racine carée. it shows the side of a man's face, he has short hair]. The artist is Belgian. Genre: hip hop. The song is about a breakup or something.
Scots Gaelic (UK: Scotland)
[PT: Faileas air an airidh by Runrig]. [album: 50 great songs]. genre: traditional folk. The song is about waking up on a ship or something.
German language (Germany / Belgium / Austria / Switzerland)
[PT: 99 Luftballons by Nena]. [album: Nena]. Genre: synth pop / pop rock. This is an antiwar song from 1983 about the cold war.
A last song even though I hit Audio limit:
Kunst by Lebanon Hanover. (link). It is a gothic rock song about art.

Art Garfunkel & Art Garfunkel Jr. - Father and Son (2024)
12 songs; 8 added, 66.67%
when I brought this album's announcement up to my aunt, who is also a fan specifically of Garfunkel, she pointed out the background of the cover for 'Time After Time' was the same as for 'Fate for Breakfast', which I like
the rest of this is going to be on the Me First and the Gimme Gimmes performance, all notes made as it was going; (brackets being edits afterwards, curly brackets being options that i'm not sure which it is, and square brackets being editing notes to myself)
now, i do not look punk, my though of what to wear were my only pair of ripper pants, sneakers and a buttoned shirt. two of them i did go with, but subbed out the buttoned shirt for a Knowledge Demon one.
and before halloween i might have passed, but i shaved and had a severe haircut, from reaching the bottom of my nose cut back to my eyebrows (afterwards; there were multiple guys with thr same haircut, i guess it's an attitude thing)
figured it wouldnt start at 7, that doesn't seem very "punk rock" [editing note; change that to like purple and bold] but it was 9:30. generally that'd be fine, but i don't know how long they'll go, and i have work at 5 the next morning, so i'm nervous
also kinda nervous in general, and about going to a pub by myself middlingly far from home, i try to keep my head down normally, so asking about shit worries me
bought my first drink and stood back a bit from the bar to drink it, and had a couple of people ask if i was in line, one of which was the guitarist of the first band. waited for the ticket checking to start
the first act asked if there were any Mormons there. the song after that was pretty good, but i don't remember the band (St Judes). loved the {bass player, other guitarist}, who did the full ball jump, the one where you bring your knees up as much ad you can, and turned and played at the drummer and stuff. pretty good
the second band, Dwarves, was b much louder and had a guy in a balaclava aNd no shirt in the audience. and the singer went over and posed midsobg for a lady's camera. Salt Lake City was a highlight.
it's occurred to me that i don't know what any of MFatGG' look like, so the people setting up the guitars and cables might be roadies, or might be them
one of the songs while setting g up sounded like a ska or punk cover of 99 Luftballons. i love that song. what i don't love is the English lyrics, which is what they used
i think the lead singer was at the bar next to me filling his water bottle, but i'm not good with faces sometimes
they were roadies, and the water bottle guy i think was a guitarist
the biggest mosh was for fucken On the Road Again
there was a lady in an admiral coat, and a guy sitting at the back with curly hair down to his elbows, and a jacket with patches, and i think he looked great

not an album but MOFO by Reolamos is a banger I have to mention it
I like TEMMIS' EP Klinge! it has 4 songs and they're a bit more of a melancholy vibe, but not in the sad way, more in a "sitting on a speeding train and staring out the window" way. does that make sense idk but the second song is Literally About That LOL. either way I like it
Adeus, Aurora by Supercombo is good! this is also a "sitting on the train" vibe to me but more upbeat this time
Irgendwie, Irgendwo, Irgendwann bei Nena is a banger song (this is the same band that did 99 Luftballons which you've probably heard of)
Es ist Abend und wir sitzen bei mir by AnnenMayKantereit is a more chill vibe too! probably wouldn't listen to most of the songs individually but as an album it's a vibe

Lyric Starter for @teardownheaven SONG: 99 LUFTBALLONS - NENA
He couldn’t believe this. It didn’t make any sense. It couldn’t be real. How the hell did this happen?
One second, they were in detention. (He refused to take the blame for that one. He’d been minding his own business until he got roped into it.) The next? Everything had collapsed.
Everything.
They were lucky they’d gotten out when they had. He still wasn’t entirely sure how they’d managed it. Garrick had helped. So had stealing a bus, though Warren was certain he’d rather jump off the school than ever let Ethan try steering that thing again.
It had felt like everyone was out to get them. And they were. The look on Will’s face when his own mother had tried taking them out… He’d never forget it.
Neither of them would.
It was a weird twist of irony that put Warren in the situation he was in now. Everyone else had lost their families. Somehow, bizarrely, he had found his. His mother was safe. And his father was here.
His father was HERE. That shouldn’t be possible. And as if all of this wasn’t enough weirdness for one day…
Warren glances out of the corner of his eye at the giant about five feet away. And yeah, this guy is a giant. Taller than him, taller than Zach. Not quite as tall as Larry when he powered up, but that was an unfair comparison. This guy wasn’t a rock monster - he was just big. Big, and armed to the teeth, but - judging by his mom’s reaction - a friend.
God, today was fucked up.
Tumblr media
“So, uh-” He tucks his hands under his arms, looking up at the giant. “You… Know my mom?”

Not people trying make 99 Luftballons into an Islamophobic song. Look, I have my gripes about religion and I am all for interpretation but that song is very clearly about the harms of mass hysteria. It's obvious if you read the lyrics. The world gets destroyed because people jumped to conclusions about balloons and went all out on a threat that wasn't even there.

@imrryr replied to your post “@imrryr replied to your post “Okay so I don't know...”:
out of curiosity, how do you identify a british/american tourist? is it just when they open their mouths, or is their clothing, or some secret third thing i'm not aware of? i was pleased when i was in austria and everybody started a conversation with me in german (which was also unfortunate because unless they were quoting rammstein or the lyrics to 99 luftballons i had no idea what they were saying, but still, yunno, a little flattering not to look like a tourist)
Hmm, well in Copenhagen, I tend to just look for the people squinting in confusion at signs readings things like "Strøget" or queueing up at the ticketing machines by the subway stations (cause all the locals have either travel cards or the DOT app).
However specifically in reference to the earlier post with travel bloggers, they'll usually mention early in the video which airport they flew from e.g. "It was a very long flight from Boston" or "I slept the whole way from LA".
There is also just a difference in the way Americans/Brits vs. Danes dress. While far from 100% accuracy, you can sometimes recognize the absence or presence of particular articles of clothing. Like if I see a very sorta, casually fashion forward woman on the street, I would expect her to carry a "Mads Nørgaard" or "Planet Nusa" tote bag, but if instead she's carrying say, a Marc Jacobs tote bag, then odds are she's not local. Because Danish people love Scandinavian designs.

Hello!
Loving the Castles playlist, and simply must know, especially in light of recent debates about how powerful Harry is...
...why the Bongo Bong song? Is he, in fact, the king of the bongos as WELL as the Boy Who Lived?
hahahhaha 🤣. it 100% is harry's destiny - i didn't tell you but that's where this whole fic has been going all along lmao.
Tumblr media
nah, jokes aside, this song is probably unfamiliar to our american friends but i swear to you that every continental european person who was alive at the end of the 90s has heard it. it's just one of those european classics, like las ketchup and 99 luftballons. it was later covered by robbie williams as a mash-up with the original singer's other hit (je ne t'aime plus) which actually has the same underlying melody. i was in prague a few weekends ago and for some reason, the bongo song was playing everywhere. it reminded me of it, made me laugh, and i discovered it came out in '99 and... voilà. this wouldn't have charted in the US so that's why the fic says harry and ginny hear it on some obscure channel - it's just a fun song, you know? the kind of silly song you laugh at on a road trip, i found it quite fitting for the theme.
and, idk, the lyrics are a bit #deep when you actually listen to them, it worked with the way harry and ginny are sort of "lost" in this very large place that is the US.

Nena - 99 Luftballons (99 Red Balloons) (CBS Schallplatten DE/Epic US, Single, 1983) - Photographed by Jim Rakete (?)
This anti-nuclear warfare anthem was recorded in both its native German and English, the latter of which was intended for international audiences. Most US stations preferred the German version instead, and having watched the music video for the English version, I'm not that surprised. The English lyrics veer off from the melody at times.
The English lyrics have a different meaning from the German ones, so I'm not gonna bother typing them here.

The Global Influence of Iconic Lyrics and Tunes
Music is a universal language that crosses borders and unites cultures. It reflects our emotions, preserves traditions, and sometimes even sparks movements. Iconic songs and their lyrics shape generations and leave a lasting impact.
In this article, we’ll dive into five unforgettable musical gems—from romantic soundtracks to energetic global hits—that highlight the transformative power of music. These songs showcase how music can connect hearts and cultures, making it a force that’s truly global.
1. "50 Shades of Grey Songs": Redefining Romance
The Fifty Shades of Grey series didn’t just break records at the box office—it also set new standards for movie soundtracks. These songs are crafted to perfectly capture the movie’s themes of love, passion, and vulnerability.
Ellie Goulding’s "Love Me Like You Do" and The Weeknd’s "Earned It" are standout tracks that seamlessly blend romance with intensity. If you haven’t explored the 50 shades of grey songs, now is the perfect time to immerse yourself in their emotional depth. They remind us that the right music can make a story unforgettable.
2. "Zedd Stay Lyrics": A Modern Masterpiece
Few modern tracks have achieved the emotional depth and popularity of Zedd’s "Stay," featuring Alessia Cara. The song balances poignant lyrics with captivating electronic beats, creating a dynamic listening experience.
The Zedd Stay lyrics encapsulate the fleeting nature of love and time, touching on themes of longing and hesitation. Its success lies in its relatability—who hasn’t wished for just a little more time with someone they care about? This hit is proof that electronic music can convey as much emotion as any ballad.
3. The Fun and Energy of "Toba Toba Song"
For those looking for pure entertainment, the Toba Toba song delivers on every front. Its infectious beats and playful lyrics make it an instant mood booster, perfect for parties or casual listening.
This song demonstrates how simplicity and energy can create a lasting impression. Sometimes, music doesn’t need a deep message—it just needs to make you feel good. Toba Toba is a perfect reminder of the joy music can bring, even without intricate storytelling.
4. The Cultural Richness of "German Songs"
German music offers a fascinating blend of tradition and innovation. From folk-inspired tunes to cutting-edge electronic beats, German songs have something for everyone.
Classic hits like "99 Luftballons" by Nena convey powerful messages with universal appeal, while modern artists like Milky Chance and Rammstein continue to push boundaries. Exploring German music is an enriching experience that introduces listeners to a world of unique rhythms and lyrical storytelling.
5. The Nostalgia of "Barbie Song Lyrics"
Barbie songs are more than just fun tunes—they’re a celebration of creativity, individuality, and joy. Tracks like Aqua’s "Barbie Girl" hold a special place in pop culture, thanks to their playful and empowering lyrics.
Recently, the Barbie song lyrics have evolved to reflect contemporary themes of empowerment and inclusivity. These tracks remind us that music tied to beloved icons can transcend generations, inspiring both kids and adults alike.
How Music Becomes a Global Phenomenon
What makes some songs resonate across the world? Here are some key factors:
Universal Themes: Songs like "Stay" and "Love Me Like You Do" touch on emotions everyone can relate to, such as love and longing.
Cultural Representation: Tracks like German songs preserve and showcase cultural identities, fostering appreciation for diversity.
Catchy Beats: The Toba Toba song proves that upbeat, infectious music can transcend language barriers.
Pop Culture Connections: Songs tied to popular movies or characters, such as Barbie, benefit from built-in nostalgia and widespread appeal.
Lyrical Depth: Iconic lyrics, like those in Zedd’s "Stay," connect deeply with listeners, making the songs timeless.
The Power of Lyrics
Lyrics play a significant role in how music impacts us. They tell stories, evoke emotions, and even challenge societal norms. Let’s look at why lyrics are so influential:
Storytelling: Songs like 50 Shades of Grey soundtracks weave narratives that complement their visual counterparts.
Emotional Connection: Lyrics like those in "Stay" capture complex feelings, allowing listeners to see their own experiences mirrored in the music.
Cultural Identity: German songs often incorporate traditional elements, keeping cultural heritage alive.
Inspiration: Tracks like Barbie songs inspire self-expression and individuality.
By paying attention to the words behind the melodies, we unlock a deeper understanding of the music we love.
Music as a Unifier
In an increasingly divided world, music remains one of the few forces capable of bringing people together. Here’s how the songs featured in this article illustrate that unity:
50 Shades of Grey soundtracks unite fans of romance and cinematic music.
Zedd’s "Stay" bridges the gap between electronic and mainstream music lovers.
The Toba Toba song offers a universal invitation to dance and celebrate life.
German songs introduce international listeners to the beauty of German culture.
Barbie songs spark nostalgia, creating shared memories across generations.
Music reminds us of our shared humanity, transcending language and cultural barriers.
Tips for Discovering New Music
Explore Global Playlists: Platforms like Spotify and YouTube offer curated playlists featuring music from around the world.
Listen to Soundtracks: Movie and TV soundtracks often introduce listeners to hidden gems.

the official english cover of 99 luftballons makes me so mad (not that mad really just annoyed but) because they made the english replacement for "neunundneunzig luftballons", which they SAY IN THE SONG!!!, into "ninety-nine red balloons" WHICH DOESNT HAVE THE SAME AMOUNT OF SYLLABLES!!!! neun-und-neun-zig luft-bal-lons (7 syllables) vs. ninety-nine red balloons (6 syllables!!! not even close!!!) also why are the balloons red. are they all fucking red? 99 balloons in the same fucking color? why not in a variety of colors?
but like you and i in a little toy shop / buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got vs. hast du etwas zeit für mich? / dann singe ich ein lied für dich (do you have some time for me? then i'll sing a song for you) like which sounds better? which flows better? which has a nicer meaning? hint: it's not the english one!!!!!
ok im mostly kidding the rest of the song is a fine translation but like i still much prefer the german one i just think it sounds nicer, translation aside 😭😭 like look at the german lyrics (english translation to compare it to on there too) vs. the official english lyrics. like take a listen to the english ver vs the german ver like?!?! idk the german version flows better to me but maybe im crazy who knows
