One time this man approached me in a bar talking in Spanish. So I assumed he was Spanish and we started speaking, we had a whole ass conversation and at some point he was like. So what part of Spain are you from? And I said well I’m Italian actually. What part of Spain are you from? And he was like. I’m Greek.

I don’t want to be alarming, but things could get really bad really fast. OTW shared this today on Twitter, and I'm a bit worried about it 😅

recall of ground beef products sent to restaurants in the united states due to shiga toxin-producing e. coli
WASHINGTON, Nov. 20, 2024 – Wolverine Packing Co., a Detroit, Mich. establishment, is recalling approximately 167,277 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.
The fresh products have a “use by” date of 11/14/2024 and the frozen products are labeled with production date 10 22 24. View full product list. View labels.
The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 2574B” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to restaurant locations nationwide.
emphasis mine.
so far, 15 illnesses have been linked to this. all of them from minnesota.
as always, this number is expected to be lower than the true number of people who have gotten sick. so do not assume that only people in minnesota got sick or at risk, because the recalled beef was shipped around the country.
Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider. E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps 2–8 days (3–4 days, on average) after exposure the organism. While most people recover within a week, some develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This condition can occur among persons of any age but is most common in children under 5-years old and older adults. It is marked by easy bruising, pallor, and decreased urine output. Persons who experience these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately.
FSIS is concerned that some product may be in restaurant refrigerators or freezers. Restaurants are urged not to serve these products. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
emphasis mine. it can take more than a week after eating food contaminated with e. coli to get sick. reminder as always, even if someone goes to a doctor the second they feel ill, it can take weeks for a case of foodborne illness to get officially associated with any given cluster of illness from food contamination. and not everyone seeks medical attention for food poisoning in the first place.
this beef was distributed primarily if not exclusively to restaurants, and may still be in restaurant freezers. for the average consumer, there is not much that can be done other than ask restaurants you eat at if they use any beef products manufactured by wolverine packing company.
for people who work in food, this means throwing out the recalled beef or returning it to place of purchase for a refund.
if you think you have gotten sick in relation to this recall, please seek medical attention, even if just to get your illness associated with this. like this and every other instance of food contamination, if you develop long-term medical conditions from food poisoning, you want as many records of it as possible. this type of e. coli can cause some nasty problems in the long run.

i think another issue aside from (or perhaps tied in with) media literacy online is people refusing to have their own opinions on things. like, i often see people parroting the opinions of others around them/people they admire rather than actually paying attention to their own thoughts on a subject or any other opinions.
do you really think such and such thing is true, or are you just agreeing because someone you usually agree with thinks so? have you actually thought about it yourself? what kind of biases might even people you respect and admire have? you should be critical and thoughtful about opinions even when they're held by people you like.
