🦇The LAST Glitter and Guilt Triple Update🦇 (for Chapter 1, I mean)
I tried really hard to make this update fall EXACTLY on the date of the very first post I made that led to this webcomic coming to be and I am happy I managed to nail it.
It's crazy that a little Twitter thread rambling about a concept spawned from me randomly remembering a childhood ship of mine, Ichigo and Kisshu from Tokyo Mew Mew, led to me starting a second webcomic.
It's even crazier just how many people have been following this story. I am forever blown away by the amount of audience interaction these characters and story get so thank you to everyone who stumbled across me and these characters and decided to stick around for the ride!
I will be taking a break from working on this webcomic, as well as Beanstalked, so I can give my hand a breather because I've been juggling two fully colored webcomics for a year and a half and, while I love working on comics, I love not risking burn out even more.
DON'T WORRY THOUGH AS GLITTER AND GUILT WILL RETURN WITH CHAPTER 2, AKA "SIDE B" OF THIS LOVE STORY. Right now we've only seen Side A (A for Amara hahahahah I am so funny and clever).

Hear me out... Tokyo Mew Mew AU for the Yi City Fam
STOPPP I LITERALLY HAVE A TOKYO MEW MEW AU FOR LIKE A BUNCH OF CHARACTERS AND THEY'RE IN IT LOL BUT THIS NEEDS SOME REWORKING UH
first off, the cast. XY is Kisshu. he has to be. not because of any choice opinions on how to treat a lady or anything but because they're both the little shit who has given me gender envy. AQ is Pudding because look at them. enough said. also ever since i was a kid i was obsessed with the idea of Kisshu and Pudding having a sibling banter bond and i was robbed. i suppose XXC would be the obvious protagonist so Ichigo? I only say this bc I really REALLY WANT SL TO BE DEEP BLUE LMAOOO THAT HAIR!!!!!!! SL is in his villain era now
That aside, obviously it's not all 1:1. I still want to make AQ a monkey girl because that's too cute, but she fights with a staff! The cafe, which in this would be run by XXC himself (inherited it and the research from BSSR?) is less cutesy because they don't need to lure in teenage girls, but it's still a cozy and traditional place where you can rent out hanfu for the day or something adorable like that. Still 100% a front for a secret lab though. XXC's animal would be a great white heron, he'd get majestic wings and a flowy outfit that would still allow him to fight (and fly)! Since it's sort of lame to just have 2 animal people I sort of want SL to also be an animal person (a human-alien hybrid thing who is now also an animal person... save some for the rest of us), so he'd be a leopard >:) XY is just a cute lil alien showing his midriff and fucking around and waiting for his Great Leader to wake the fuck up so everyone can go home and he can kill every human on earth
XY's reason for hating humans, aside from the fact they stole his homeland and poisoned it, is that he was captured as an infant on a recon mission and terribly experimented on. that same recon mission resulted in the death of BSSR and SL's adoptive parents, who were working with her on her alien research. however, they were not the ones to cut this poor boy open, but it doesn't matter. All Scientists Must Die and all humans too.
XXC took AQ off the streets where she was performing for cash and had been doing so for years, he's trying to get her paperwork in order so she can go to school properly. she has no family save for him. they met on a rainy day, where XXC got in an accident trying to prevent AQ from suffering the same fate. she took him to the hospital and stayed by his side and they've been inseparable ever since. XXC never intended for her to get infused with animal DNA, as he wanted this to be a solo thing (it's XXC, he's self sacrificial to a fault), but the machine malfunctioned and she got caught in the blast. she's fine with this, as she would do anything to make XXC happy, even if she hates dealing with customers at the cafe and prefers to be the bookkeeper.
SL was also caught in the blast, as he was visiting the cafe to try and return a book to XXC. they both take the same environmentalism course at uni!! SL is unaware of his adoptive parents' work (until the story conveniently reveals it to him) and only knows they were researching the environment, so he's very studious and dedicated, serious and passionate, so their memory can live on and he can make them proud. but also he just loves nature. he's also unaware of the Darkness Inside Him though he has scary dreams sometimes. XXC is at first horrified to get him involved, but soon loves having him by his side; they train together and uncover more of their parents' research while fighting big weird aliens. XXC has been so alone ever since his mother's passing, putting on a brave face for everyone and trying to keep his spirits high, but AQ and SL becoming important parts of his life has been a balm for his soul. but then XY is there outside his window at 3 AM demanding they throw knives at each other until someone dies or some shit so his studies are falling behind a little bit lmao
as a fun extra, in the original massive AU with a bunch of non Yi City characters, XY was split into two (as i tend to do) and one was Kisshu and the other was Ichigo. think of XY in fun lil strawberry shorts and with the whole cat getup. it was great
SORRY THIS IS SO RAMBLY LMAO I LOVE TMM SM AHHH

Kishu for the impression ask game?
[ask game link]
Okay! This is based on the manga and OG anime, because I haven't gotten to watch Tokyo Mew Mew New yet, so any new worldbuilding/details from TMMN are ignored.
First impression Ears. EARS. (Second impression: wtf are those sleeves. How does this shirt work. Why are there long ribbons.) So, basically all visual.
Impression now
He's just a funny terrible guy. Like, I want to punch him. He deserves it. But he is gleefully terrible and I also want to take one of those helpful hand grabber-claw things and pull on his ridiculously-oversized ears (I noticed that the new series makes the ears more sensible; some points of the manga and OG series had them absolutely ginormous).
He's also like, 13. So he's terrible but also in that lacking-adult-supervision way that makes you worry. Where are Alien Child Protective Services.
Favorite moment
Okay, I know this is really more Zakuro, but...
Look at the way he scrabbles for the portal!
Idea for a story
Basically, see my headcanon down there at the end? That thing. I'm probably never going to write it.
Unpopular opinion
These days? Not sure. In Ye Olden Fandom days, it was definitely not popular to ship Ichigo with her canonical love interest, Masaya, rather than Ryou or our spicy alien here.
Favorite relationship
I am pretty sure I hold the distinction of being the world's only Kisshu x Kanna Saionji shipper. Kanna is an anime-only character from episode 32, is a spoiled rich girl who considers Minto her rival, and I think that once he learns to be less of an assaulting asshole, they would be obnoxiously delightful together. Also, her dominant color is orange hair, and orange and green look nice together.
Favorite headcanon
Kisshu and co are part of a cult.
No, listen. It's a cult that has some power to it, since Deep Blue gets himself incarnated on earth and is actually a threat, but "three guys and their semiconscious boss" are not an invading force. I could kill more people by dropping a medium-sized rock off Tokyo Tower; these nerds can fly and create giant monsters and as far as I can tell, never managed to kill a single person during their genocide attempt. Even if you argue they were basically just killing time until Deep Blue woke up, that was a terrible plan to give their human opponents time to study them and get stronger.
Their small numbers and general lack of plan (and bizarre decision to start their invasion in a highly-populated modern city rather than setting up a base in a less-populated area where they could have straightened out any problems and let Deep Blue awaken without interference) make more sense if you consider all them them zealots on the fringes of their society. Disaffected young men living in a not-great place, vulnerable to the idea of doing something meaningful and active that makes them feel powerful.
Their people left earth three million years ago; for most of the population the concept of former planetary home they could retake is likely a myth, though I wouldn't be surprised if there were others looking for other places to live, or to terraform their current planet. (For reference: humans have been around far less than one million years; homo sapiens evolved around 300,000 years ago and our oldest myths are still less than 50,000 years old.) Our guys definitely found/uncovered/rediscovered something because their attempt has power behind it (and their spaceship, and whatever the alien dimension is), but in no way do they seem like the chosen heroes of an entire race.

Can you please tell me all about Tokyo Mew Mew? It looks adorable and I saw that you watched it so...
Go on, my friend. If you get the time, please tell me everything!
Omg omg omg. I love you whoever you are for asking about this. So Tokyo Mew Mew is the first anime I watched before I knew what anime was. I watched it on a channel called Pop Girl. The dubbed version is called Mew Mew Power. So I knew it as that. I never finished the anime until I was a lot older because they stopped dubbing it at the 26th episode. So I didn't know it was an anime until I caught up with Fairy Tail, just before fairy tail 2014 came out. I was recommended by a friend to watch Fairy Tail so that was how I was introduced to the world of anime. Anyway I was going through a list of what animes to watch and there it was. Tokyo Mew Mew. My mind was blown that I had actually watched anime before. So I finished it in subbed because I thought it was just a normal show that was cancelled when I was a kid. When actually it was just that they stopped dubbing. Anyway.
So Tokyo Mew Mew is in the magical girl genre. It follows five girls who originally don't know each other who have been mutated with rare animal DNAs. (In order of introduction) Ichigo (Zoey) with the DNA of Iriomote Cat, Minto (carina) with the DNA of a Blue Lorikeet, Retasu (Bridget) with the DNA of a Finless Porpoise, Bu-Ling (Kikki) with the DNA of Golden Lion Tamarin and Zakuro (Renee) who has the DNA of a Grey Wolf.
So they become superheros who have the abilities of said animals. When in their transformations Ichigo becomes Mew Strawberry, Minto becomes Mew Mint, Retasu become Mew Lettuce, Bu-Ling becomes Mew Pudding and Retasu becomes Mew Pomegranate.
So the plot is that there are Aliens (Kisshu, Pie and Tart) that have come to Earth wishing to reclaim it for their kind, as they lived on earth 3 million years ago but had to leave because of a series of disasters nearly led to their extinction. Later they return to Earth and see that humans have taken over. They feel that humans are destroying the planet so they release Para Paras which are octopus like creatures that fuse with animals and create monsters called Chimera Animas. The Aliens want the monsters to speed up the destruction of earth to wipe out the human race so they can come back. In the anime they also added that the Para Paras can fuse with the soul of a human and plants as well. But in the manga it's only animals.
So, because of this threat two men called Ryou and Keiichiro carry on the work of one of their fathers I can't remember who and learn how to fuse the DNA of red data animals (endangered) with human DNA as they are the only animals that can't be fused with Para Paras. The five girls are chosen because their DNA is the most compatible with the five red data animals. Ryou and Keiichiro built a cafe where the girls will work as their cover. But the cafe is really their headquarters.
The anime is basically the Ichigo looking for the other 4 mews and protecting the world from the monsters. It's honestly such a a cute and fun anime. I recommend. I haven't watched the reboot yet but I am rewatching the original anime as we speak.
I'm gonna get back into cosplay and I'm gonna cosplay as Ichigo because of how much I loved and still love her.
Can I just say this whole sequence in the anime is so beautiful. Ichigo is so beautiful. (Above)

Recently, I came across these tweets, and I kind of can’t stop thinking about this.
I adore villain x heroine ships and dynamics, and frequently find myself pondering what it is I love so much about them. One thing I’ve come to notice is this very idea: the importance of the male villain’s desire for her… his near-obsession and the fact that he is threatened by her. And, as mentioned in those tweets, part of what makes that so special is the rarity of seeing men or male characters treat women as being so important, as being valid or worthy of consideration as a threat. To me, it can be almost empowering to explore such dynamics through fiction.
One of my favorite movies, of course, is Star Wars: A New Hope, and primarily because I’ve always been absolutely obsessed with whatever is going on with Leia and Vader and Tarkin there. It always draws me right in… the powerful Dark Lord near-obsessively chasing down this tiny defiant young princess, slaying so many soldiers and going through such effort, so adamant that she be brought to him alive.
And from there, she’s treated as a high-class prisoner, heavily guarded and locked up tight, interrogated ruthlessly… but resisting with all the strength and pride of a leader in an underdog rebel movement. She’s essentially the one who is the key to the entire story.
As for Tarkin, he spends much of his screen time dealing with Leia… focused on how best to break the rebel prisoner who holds such key information in this galaxy-spanning war. Most famously, of course, this is illustrated with the destruction of Alderaan… an entire planet wiped away as an act of spite and a means to manipulate the girl he regards as a critical enemy. He is rather creepy and demeaning to her, too, but this only serves to add to a complex power dynamic worth exploring….
Moreover, I imagine it is rare to see a powerful military man treating a nineteen-year-old young woman as a credible threat to his Empire, but in ANH, it’s very much the case. And with the villain/heroine subtext I rather enjoy envisioning from their little scenes together, it can be quite captivating and unique.
There are a lot of similarly enjoyable pairings in many mahou shoujo series— Usagi and Dimande in Sailor Moon, Ichigo and Kisshu in Tokyo Mew Mew, and all manner of Pretty Cure rarepairs— where young girls simply trying their best are the ultimate key to defeating evil and have an ongoing rivalry/love-hate relationship with the worst of monsters. The subtext in such dynamics is fun to explore just as it popular in fandom to do with many popular male superheroes and their archenemies— Batman and the Joker, for instance.
In fact, even when it comes to the most cliche and stereotypical damsel-in-distress stories, the inciting incident, the villain’s capture of the innocent girl, always comes from his inherent desire for her— whether it be her beauty or status, or some form of obstacle which she presents to his evil plan.
It’s so strange and fascinating to think that these sorts of dynamics, particularly when it comes to ship discourse in fandom, are often decried as “toxic” and “abusive”. It’s not as if there aren’t some very dangerous power dynamics at play— which only makes these relationships that much more fun to explore in fiction— but so too can they truly serve as a power fantasy for women and girls, who are so often told made to feel as if we aren’t important.
Sometimes I just need a villain to chase me across the galaxy and regard me as his “worthy foe”, you know? 🥺🥰

With that line from Kisshu to Ichigo about how she doesn't know anything in the first episode of season 2, I'm hoping we'll get to know more about him later. Whether in relation to his people and to him.
Again, I would be disappointed if only the psycho aspect is shown in this anime. 😢
But I assume that since he sacrifices himself for her in the end, we are obliged at one time or another to show us a softer and less psychotic side of the Kisshu character.
Otherwise, there will be a lag. 🤷♀️

It was surprising, but I think I liked how they handled the emotional rugpull of the Deep Blue transformation.
Deep Blue’s so in-control of himself, so regal and composed. He calmly announces his rule, is dispassionate about Pie and Kisshu and Tart apologizing for not “clearing out the vermin,” stands tall and unaffected.
He’s framed in these wide angled and distanced shots to get across Ichigo’s perspective on him.
In the original manga and the old anime, Ichigo and the Blue Knight are having a nice moment that’s the calm before the storm of the sudden transformation into Deep Blue, so Deep Blue immediate horror vibes were a contrast to how the scene had seemed so sweet and calm right before then.
But in New, Aoyama’s growing anxieties from the nightmares and Blue Knight’s narrow existence have already been building a crescendo.
There’s no calm before a storm this time. In fact, the usually stoic Blue Knight was having a full Ace Attorney style breakdown that’s been building up all season long. We just saw Aoyama have a monologue about how emotions and passion and connection are all so new to him, and so is this fear of losing all that. It’s a very raw, very human burst of emotions.
And Deep Blue arrives, and shows none of those hard-earned emotions of Aoyama at all.
It’s like music, I guess. For a song that starts soft and quiet, you simply build up louder and faster to get across a rising energy. For a song that’s already fast though, you can get that same effect by sharply dropping the tempo for a bit...
And then coming back up to speed.

Can you please share your story of how you became a Kisshu x Ichigo shipper and Tokyo Mew Mew fan in the first place? It would be really interesting to discover the original of it all!
Sure! :) putting this under a readmore because it’s going to be long.
I discovered TMM as an anime first, via the ominous depths of 2006 YouTube, split into 3 parts and uploaded in 360p. I’d already watched a bit of anime — mostly whatever was popular — I think I’d finished all of Inuyasha, seen most of classic Sailor Moon, and I was halfway through Cardcaptor Sakura when I picked up TMM. I fell in love with it pretty much from episode 1, and immediately dove into fan forums, wikis, etc. I finished my first watch of it on YouTube and immediately wanted more, so little 5th grader me scraped together some cash and bought the first two volumes of the manga. When I finished those over the span of literally one evening, I read the last five while sitting on the floor of a Barnes & Noble (as one does when you’re young and broke and really wanna read a new manga).
Not to get too deep, but I had a pretty bizarre and lonely childhood, so I basically took whatever anime or manga I could find and inhaled it as a form of escapism. I was at the library almost every weekend camped out in a corner reading manga. I went on to watch basically any anime that was appealing to my demographic as a middle schooler — Shugo Chara, FMA, Soul Eater, Full Moon, Ouran — you name the anime that a middle school girl would be into, and I’d seen it. But literally nothing could scratch the itch for a unique story and creativity in its characters like TMM did. I wrote a ton of (terrible) fanfiction for it back in the day, watched every single AMV on the internet, and argued with people in TMM forums about whether ZakuMint is canon or not (as one does when you’re queer and in middle school and full of emotions).
Speaking more specifically to why Quiche & Ichigo is still my OTP as an adult — I think it was the first time I’d really experienced a pairing that was a more complex (and dark) take on a villain/hero relationship. Those kinds of pairings in movies and TV shows had always fascinated me as a kid, but Mia Ikumi’s vision for kishigo in TMM’s manga had me totally captivated. Coupled with the fact that Quiche as a character was fascinating to me (more on that in my other ask I’ve already answered here), I think it’s hard to match that same childhood excitement and wonder while consuming new media as an adult. Once you have a childhood OTP, it’s hard to let go of it completely. You can find other ships you’re excited about, but if you’re really, truly in love with one pairing, and you’re getting treated to new media for it like Ikumi’s Re-Turn… it’s hard to replicate. :)
I’m still a big fan of the enemies-to-lovers and villain/hero tropes today, and TMM will always be a special fandom for me that I return to time and time again. 💖
#thank you for the ask anon !#asks#long post#oh god I’m sorry this is such a rant lol#I hope this answers what you were looking for anon!!#I love these kinds of asks :)#tokyo mew mew

Shoutout to Ryou for jumping in and trying to fight Quiche to protect Lettuce, with or without any powers of his own! I love how protective they were of each other!
yessss anon! I am here for protective boyfriend, girlfriends, friends brothers and sisters XD honestly, New has gifted us with so many protective moments with all the girls too, Minto and the girls standing up for Ichigo when Kisshu attacked her, the team working together so no one of them is hurt in the tokyo tower battle, Masaya protecting Ichigo and viceversa... cannot wait for more of that.
And speaking of THAT scene, yeah, I loved that too... finally some catfight between the boys and, most of all, Ryou fighting with his bare hands to protect Retasu and the Mew Aqua... nice try, man!

TMM and TMMN Anime Comparison Thoughts
Ichigo: TMMN, her character and romance are more fleshed out.
Aoyama: TMMN, HE HAS EMOTIONS AND A PERSONALITY.
Ryou: Og or tie. I felt he had more character (and better style) in the og, plus his backstory was done better. But I do like how in New he seemed more compassionate and responsible.
Keichiro: Og, he just had more character and screentime overall.
Ichigo's parents: Not sure, I took too long to decide and now I forgot the details. 😅 Tie? Maybe leaning towards og? I feel like they had more screentime in the og.
Mint: Tie, leaning towards og because I like how she went from a snobby girl to an actual friend. There was also more focus on her ballet. In New they just kind of cut that out, though they did give her an entrepreneur type arc that was kind of interesting. I just wish she could've had both.
Lettuce: TMMN, she was more fleshed out and had more to do, being the one to learn about the alien world.
Pudding: Tie, they're about the same.
Zakuro: Og, she felt like a morally grey, complicated person who fit the lone wolf persona. She would give advice, but also indirectly wanted to teach the others how to stand on their own. There was some of this in New, but I don't feel like as much attention was given to it.
Kisshu: Og, his development was more gradual, he seemed more intelligent, could think for himself, liked to experiment to figure out his theories, and was rebellious. He also was more extreme, which I personally just found interesting to watch.
Taruto: Tie, like Pudding, he was about the same.
Pai: Og, he seemed too much like a robot in the new one and what he did in the ending kind of confused me.
Blue Knight: TMMN, he has more complex character drama and doesn't run around in those stupid little shorts.
Deep Blue: They're both so different it really just depends on what I'm in the mood for. A god mad with his lust for power and domination or a leader who just wants what's best for his people and can even be reasoned with?
Mew powers: TMMN, I like that they all could use the Mew Aqua Rod.
Worldbuilding: TMMN, they showed more stuff with the aliens.
Story: Og, it flowed better and was less rushed.
Ending: The og had a more dramatic and fun climax that I felt like was built up to pretty well, but the new one gave us some extra stuff with the aliens and Mews that was nice to see; we got more closure with them.
Transformations: Both are good, but I'm partial to the og, plus og had better themes.
Music: Og had more variety and more memorable themes, like I said.
Character designs: Og, for the most part they felt more in character and simple where New seems overly embellished just for the sake of it. (Although TMMN Mew Lettuce has better hair, maybe Mew Ichigo too since the red breaks up the pink, but then I do actually like the pink hair too).

final thoughts on tokyo mew mew new
okay i watched the final episode on tokyo mew mew new and wow. this was such a great reboot. i'm going to miss the mew mews so much. i hope they announce a third season.
so lets talk about things i liked about this anime.
i cannot stress this enough but i adore the mew mew's characterizations in this anime, especially ichigo, mint, and lettuce. even though this anime is shorter than the og it actually feels like they have characters arcs and they all became better people by meeting each other. and the friendship between the girls in this anime means so much to me. i love that they focused more on the friendships and how it made, especially ichigo, a better person. how they all rely on each other and stick their necks out for each other. it was such a joy to watch them.
and ichisaya was done well here too. i love them in the og but there's something sweeter about them here. it feels realistic to teenagers dating.
also the zakumint moments were always a treat
now for the things i didn't like, which there actually isn't a lot.
i was hoping for the anime to give zakuro a proper backstory but i feel like she didn't get as much focus as the other mew mews. the episode where she gets the mew aqua wasn't even about her.
also, FUCK KISSHU. that scene in the final episode where he surprise kisses ichigo wasn't funny.
so anyways, that's my opinion on tokyo mew mew new. i love this show and i'm holding out for a third season because i need more mew mew.
