Iāve been trying to get into Hozier lately, and seeing as you seem to be the resident expert on him, what songs would you recommend starting with?
(I know his more popular ones obviously, like Take me to church, Too sweet, and Nobodyās soldier, but I want to know about some of his secret bangers)

And thank you for the acknowledgment of resident expert, I have 10 years experience in hozier listening and I donāt play about it.
So the thing about hozier is that I truly believe he has a no skip discography on all of his solo works. And pretty much all of his collabs are also bangers (with the possible exception of tell it to my heart. Donāt start there)
Ok so from his first album I want to highlight a few tracks, Jackie and Wilson, from Eden, work song, like real people do, and to be alone. They are all sonically very similar (as are most of the tracks on the first album) but they all sound totally different. The instrumentation stays the same for most of the tracks but I am literally incapable of mixing them up. They all have unique sounds while still remaining cohesive in the context of the album. Expect great guitar and vocals, very little to no synths, funky beats (including some fairly cool time signatures). Excellent lyrics, definitely worth reading along. Especially cherry wine which at first glance sounds like the most beautiful love song but if you read along youāll see how violent it is.
Wasteland baby is the second album. Standout tracks for me are Nina cried power, dinner and diatribes, would that I, shrike, be, and the title track wasteland baby. This one is definitely the sexiest album. Expect much more exploration into bluesy tunes and sound effects, the beats are getting even funkier, the lyrics are catastrophic and feature a lot of references to Greek mythology. This is the kind of album that you sit at the end of the world and listen to while everything falls apart. Wasteland baby the song epitomises this. Itās the conflict between standing up and fighting the broken systems that oppress people vs the need to give up and wash your hands of everything. Admitting we tried our best and it wasnāt enough. At least I have you. The deluxe tracks for this one are some of his best work on this project so check out why would you be loved, nfwmb and moments silence too.
Unreal unearth. This one is my favourite and my being has been altered by this album in ways I canāt even describe. Every song is a grade A hit. Itās actually my favourite album of all time I think. Honestly everything on this one is worth listening to but at some point once youāve listened to all of the tracks individually, I cannot reccomend enough that you sit down and listen to the whole thing in order. No pauses. The whole thing with this album is that itās a journey into the underworld inspired by Danteās inferno. Each song occupies a different circle of hell and discusses topics surrounding the cardinal sins that are punished in each circle. Itās worth searching uk which sings belong in which circle. I wouldnāt go so far as to say itās a concept album but it uses the story as a great jumping point for exploring moral, political and religious topics that are not discussed in the original cantos. This album is a masterpiece and I could literally write about it for hours but my thumbs are already falling off so Iāll keep it quick. Standout tracks are Francesca, first time, eat your young, abstract psychopomp, who we are, unknown nth, all things end, first light, de selby part 1 and butchered tongue. If you want the more explicitly political tracks choose eat your young and butchered tongue and READ ALONG. I could write fucking essays just on eat your young. This album was also written in the context of covid 19 and the lockdown and songs like all things end really make a heartbreaking but uplifting anthem for this period in time. The general sound of the album is very different to the two preceding albums. Expect much more manipulation of vocals and distortion of instruments. Expect more instruments. Expect full orchestra and stripped back guitar. Expect drums that sound like thunder and lightning. And for gods sake read along with this one. Cuz itās fucking fantastic lyric writing and a lot of it can be missed in his pronunciation. When Andrew learns to annunciate it is OVER for us all.
Extended songs from unreal unearth are numerous and youāve said youāve heard nobodies soldier (also very political) and too sweet. Iād also recommend wildflower and barley for a soft lockdown summer feeling tinged with hopelessness, empire now as an anthem for Irish liberation and how much it was fucking worth it despite the troubles that followed and that you are for the most year inducing love song also within the context if lockdown. Just see āthat Iād be anyway that you areā which will Iām sure soon be written on my body in tattoo ink. Through the flood acts as the introduction to the full album experience, hymn to Virgil is the last one.
Anyway have fun I tried not to write a fucking essay but I did. For unreal unearth in particular I have read no less than 5 books to examine source materials for his lyricism. I also learned a fuck ton about production to understand how he gets the sounds he does in his music. All to say this guys music is my whole life. And it can be hard to tone it down. If it all sounds confusing Iām sorry Iāve been writing this for like 40 minutes and I just did a full day in the recording studio and my brain is fried and my fingers are dead and I need to sleep, where I will probably listen to āto someone from a warm climateā to sleep. Bye :P

I will list five songs that are stuck in my head lately, and that I simply cannot get enough of.
Black Sabbath / The Sign Of The Southern Cross From Sabbath's album Mob Rules (1981). This song is haunting me lately. Despite the title, it's not about religion really, it's not a reference to Christianity. Southern Cross, also known as Crux, is a constellation of the southern sky that is centred on four bright stars in a cross-shaped asterism. It's about realising how small we are compared to the night sky, and that life itself is much bigger than our what we experience here on Earth. Love Tony Iommi's heavy guitar riff and Geezer's complimentary bass. My favourite line from lyrics: Don't live for pleasure / Make life your treasure / Fade away.
Aerosmith / Draw The Line Title song from their 1977 album. I'm still not very familiar with their discography, but it should be no surprise one of their early releases got me with the groove. The bass line is permanently stuck in my brain, I'm afraid. Classic Aerosmith song that never fails to rail me up to get some very much needed kick of energy.
Judas Priest / Victim Of Changes From their 1976 album Sad Wings Of Destiny. Another album that got me in when I kind of accidentally listened to other two tracks from this album, Dreamer Deceiver and Deceiver (youtube is amazing sometimes with suggesting you stuff). I've been enjoying my journey to the roots of metal, so Judas Priest is a must. Love their heaviness and of course Rob Halford's vocals, my queer icon!
Rainbow / Stargazer Listen. Liiisten. When I first heard this song last year, I seriously wondered under which rock I've been living so far, not knowing this monumental masterpiece. I heard it at the movie premiere "Dio. Dreamers Never Die" (2022) in the cinema and my mind was literally blown. It wasn't even the full song played in the movie, and I was already hooked, obsessed, my brain rewired. I came back home very late, and instead of getting ready to sleep because of work on the next day, I put the song on and... yeah. It's love for life. Ronnie James Dio is a vocal genius there, his emotional performance will always give me chills. Cozy Powell's drum solo intro will never not be iconic. Ritchie Blackmore's guitar solo will never not be a work of art. The song is from their second album Rising from 1976. And in terms of favourite lyrics... hard to pick just one part. Stargazer will forever be in my top ten favourite songs of all time, and I know it will be the same at the day I die, no exaggeration.
MORRIE / ććØćÆéćØćŖćå±±ćØćŖć Speaking of songs that have forever rewired my brain - MORRIE's ultimate masterpiece and "healing song" from his 1992 solo album ććć³ćć£ććÆćŖćä½ćć«ććć³ćć£ććÆćŖ (Romantic, All Too Romantic). It wasn't a love at first listen, but it sure has this unique quality that touches your heart and sends shivers down your spine. This song had to grow on me, but I was completely gone for it, when I was able to hear it live in 2019 at Solitude show in Yokohama O-SITE. He performed it alone on stage, with just the electric guitar, and the arrangement was just slightly different and he used a lot of loop, but it made so much sense to me that version will forever live in my heart. The song is about being eternal, about seasons passing and us being part of the nature's cycle, from the day we're born till we die, and then when we're born again, in human form or not, only to die again and one day just become cosmos nothingness and everything at the same time. I had the pleasure to try translating the lyrics of this song and this part always moves me almost to tears: You can become the star Ā Ā You can become the sea You can become the wind Ā You can become the sand And still find the wayĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā To that place Of infinite dream within your heart

Which date of the tour did you attend? 09/28/22, American Airlines Center, Dallas
When did you get your tickets for your show? Was it a struggle, or were they easy to grab? I originally thought I'd never be able to go, financially speaking. But a friend of the family had a birthday, and her sister bought tickets for the three of us. It was truly a miracle to be a part of such an experience because I just... Never thought it would happen.
Did you attend with anyone else? I went with my mom's best friend's kids. I treat them like my cousins, basically. They're really cool but it was very clear that I was a bigger fan of them.
What did you wear? I wore a handmade shirt that said "Hormone Replacement Therapy" in trans pride colours and the MCR black parade font. I wore it over a red dress with a hood, and I had vampire fangs in. I looked awful but I was loving it.
Where were your seats? I was on Frank's side, nearly behind the stage. I believe in section 222 of the American Airlines center. The seats were horrendous, but getting to see them at all was a gift.
What was your favorite song(s) from the setlist they played at your show? DESTROYA!!!!!! DESTROYA was the first MCR song I actually listened to and enjoyed. It made me so happy. I screamed it so loud
What song were you most hoping to hear? Did you get to hear it? I was honestly hoping for Early Sunsets over Monroeville and Heaven Help Us. They didn't play them during my show, but all the music was so awesome I didn't really care.
What was your favorite moment from the show? RAY GUITAR SOLO. MIKEY GREEN SHIRT. FALLING TO PIECES.
What was the most unexpected moment from the show? I'd say it was a pretty par for the course kind of show, but it blew me the hell away that we got THREE encore songs
Did you snag any merch? What pieces? I SPENT SO MUCH ON MERCH. I got the demolition lovers shirt, the Boy Zone shirt, and a Thank You (For the Venom) bag. I think I spent over $100 on it which was so much more than I meant
Many fans describe seeing MCR live as feeling like coming home. Did you experience anything like that at your show? I have described it to everyone as being a moment that fits perfectly into who I am. Going to a My Chemical Romance show feels like something that was fated, that fits perfectly into who I am. I was hoping to make more of a connection with other fans, but I didn't have that at the show. I went to the Dallas mall the next day and saw someone with a matching shirt - We freaked out and waved at each other, and I wish I would have said hi.
If you could change one thing about your show experience, what would it be? I would honestly have tried to go either alone or with different people, that's what I want to do the next time I get the opportunity to go to a show.
Has your perspective or opinion about the band changed since seeing them on this tour? If so, in what way? Not particularly, but it really nailed in that like... These are real people. They truly exist and are real. It made me feel so warm.
What advice would you give to people seeing My Chemical Romance in the future? DO IT AND HAVE FUN!!!!! Don't sit behind the stage. If you have to, try to get closer to ground floor.
Anything we didn't ask that you feel obliged to share or talk about? I flashed my phone light with one of my tumblr mutuals. They were behind the pit, and I was far away from them, but for a second we felt really connected.

rob! atom heart mother - pink floyd? (full disclosure i know almost nothing about the album except that i bought it from a dollar bin when i was maybe 14 and really into cows and i was always curious to know a pink floyd fan thought!)
omg that's so awesome, i really miss the experience of being a young teenager and browsing physical albums and picking them based on cover alone! I used to go to the library and check out random CDs from my branch library's insanely small and honestly? kind weird music collection. Then I'd go home and rip them onto my ipod but I'd have to be sneaky about it because my dad was weirdly morally opposed to piracy and would tell me I had to buy it on iTunes....found some stuff I really liked that way, and way more stuff that was insanely mediocre.
It's kind of funny to think of you having no context whatsoever for picking up Atom Heart Mother; it's not exactly the most approachable of Pink Floyd albums, but it's at least slightly listenable? Better than if you were to have picked up certain other ones. But the thought of you putting the record on just to be confronted with the atom heart mother suite is really silly, i'm obsessed. It's not Pink Floyd's best 23 minute song, and it kind of sounds like the discordant weirdness my brother's untalented stoner friends used to put together with secondhand synths and royalty free samples, but better? ok im rambling big time.
Ok sorry for the preamble. Overall I like the album but I don't listen to it a whole lot, aside from the track "if" which is well suited to a very particular type of mood-- remember when we were all saying 'poor little meow meow' all the time? miss that. anyway, that one regularly makes my self-pity, sorrow, yearning (eye-roll emoji) and lugubriousness not otherwise specified playlists.
Opinion on cover design: as you pointed out, COW... it's pretty awesome and kind of confusing but I think it works. I'm in favor. kind o funny that it's not on the cover of Animals lol
Favourite song:Ā If. For me it always kind of reads as certain regrets re: the band's interpersonal relations, which I won't get into here, but it speaks to me in regards to a very complex & bittersweet & deeply essential friendship in my own life.
Least favourite song: I actually really like all five tracks, even if I don't put them on that frequently. Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast (macrobiotic stuff!) and Atom Heart Mother are divisive but I love them.
Underrated track: honestly? each of these tracks is underrated amongst huge floyd fans (aka me, six other tumblrinas, and 80,000 boomers)
Overrated track:Ā none of these really get rated at all honestly, there's so much other pink floyd people talk about much more

[INTERVIEW] Wonho And The Infinite Blue
If you grew up in India, during the ā90s or in decades preceding that time, thereās a good chance youāve come across a blue inland letter. It might be an almost forgotten form of communication now, but that humble one-sheet, foldable form flew across every part of the country, from the biggest cities to the smallest villages. This writer was in boarding school, high up in the Himalayas, aged 10, and would curl up every week to write home. That blue letter was always filled with the love and longing that came from a very young, wistful heart, sitting far away from family. Wonho was told this story, as we sat down across time zones on Zoom to discuss his latest E.P, Blue Letter ā a name that triggered these bittersweet memories. As he listened, intently, his expression was a mixture of sincerity, understanding and endearment. Itās very clear that this is someone who really gets the poignancy of emotion. āWoah! Thank you so much for sharing that story,ā Wonho smiled. āIt actually makes me really glad that I have this album coming out.ā
Sincerity is an adjective that is so particular to Wonho ā something his loyal fanbase WeNee (short for We Are New Ending) will attest to. Itās evident in the music he makes; heās deeply committed to production, lyrics and performance in equal parts. Wonho is an acclaimed artiste in a musical landscape that isnāt just confined to South Korea ā the artistes who dominate that industry are bonafide global stars, and for good reason. Heās been solo since departing from Monsta X in 2019 for reasons that have been amply and unequivocally cleared and put to rest. Wonhoās debut EP, Love Synonym Pt. 1: Right For Me released in September 2020, with the sexy, crisp title track, Open Mind. It also featured Losing You, which is an intimate, heartfelt missive to his fans. The E.Pās second half, Love Synonym Pt. 2: Right For Us arrived in February this year ā a triumph, arranged across genres. There was a fantastic, audacious collaboration with singer-songwriter Kiiara called Aināt About You, and Lose, the opener, had Wonho flexing his abilities as a singer and producer in an entirely new light. Each offering provided a new definition of love ā freedom, hope, new beginnings.
Blue Letter provides deeper insight into Wonhoās heart and mind. This isnāt a new era for him, though. He has an entirely different take on the K-industry definition of a comeback ā where both image and style follow a particular concept. āInstead of me coming into a new era, I think it's like my endless story. It's my music. My music is my endless story. So, instead of me establishing an era per se, I think it's just a continuous process,ā he explains, sitting comfortably, breaking often into an easy smile, dressed in a simple black shirt and leather jacket, blonde hair highlighting his almost poreless skin. His album art also hints at the episodic nature of his sonic voyage. Both parts of Love Synonym had blue sleeves, all in different shades, as does this mini album. āWhen I look at my fans, they remind me of the colour blue. I just see the colour when I look at them. So that has become kind of like my signature colour. So, I've been using blue in my albums as well. And, for this album, I want it to convey my genuine feelings and I thought blue was the perfect colour to do so,ā he states, describing blue as the personification of his current state of mind; ruminations heās arrived at, through the last two years.
Think of a blue ocean, connecting every single one of us, across continents. It separates us, echoing a sense of isolation and loneliness. But the ocean also symbolises a need to dive into adventure, into experiences ā the great, infinite blue. That, in a nutshell, is the sense Wonho wants to convey with Blue Letter. Itās a grateful letter, of sorts, to life, music and his fans, linking all these beautiful metaphors and ideas together, like a cypher. āBeing thankful and loving my fans are just the basics of my state of mind. But then, again, through the album, I want to show a more genuine side of me by talking about my feelings and my thoughts. I hope that it could both encourage my fans and give them courage,ā he says, summarising the central message. Consider the introduction ā Seasons and Patterns. It sets the tone, illustrating waves of time, through piano keys that swell up and wash over the listener. āI think through my Intro: Seasons and Patterns, I can really show different feelings such as when I wrote the songs for Love Synonym Pt. 1 and Pt. 2. I wanted to convey that there's an expression ā¦ like patterns in love,ā he muses. āLike if there were patterns in love, how would that sound in music? I wanted to express that in the Intro. And the overarching theme of the whole album is love, so I thought it was the right start to start the album.ā
Blue, the focus track, asks the question, āCan you feel, feel the blue?ā When people usually talk about āfeeling blueā, theyāre usually referring to feeling low, sad or depressed, linking to the sense of isolation mentioned above. In Wonhoās world though, the lyrics take on a more hopeful tone, opening with, āDiving into the blindingly bright blue. Donāt stop me. Iām fine, enjoying this feeling...:ā Providing context, he says, āSo yes, feeling blue means feeling depressed, right? I wanted to talk about feeling depressed and how it's important to accept it as is and then seize it, when you can. I want to talk about that attitude through my title track, Blue. I want to say that you're not alone if you ever feel blue or depressed.ā Itās a beautiful thought; a way to honour dreams and rise above negativity.

EXCLUSIVE: Moon Jong Up Talks About āUSā, His Journey, B.A.P Reunion & More!
Moon Jong Up mononymously known as Jongup, gained popularity as the main dancer and lead vocalist of the now-disbanded KPOP group B.A.P under TS Entertainment. At present, Jongup is signed with Big Ocean ENM as a soloist. He released his solo debut single album, āHeadacheā featuring Yunhway on May 7, 2020, and garnered much support from his fans worldwide. He also recently featured in Mr Queenās OST, āVenus.ā
Besides his amazing vocal skills and dance, Jongup can also rap and is also an actor. He performed in the play āThe Lost Villageā and has also been cast for the upcoming movie, āIdol Recipeā. Ā Jongup is truly a power packed artist. Ahead of his comeback, he pre-released an MV on 1st July 2021, for the song āFindā, which features Moon Sujin. The song has a slow R&B beat with a soothing melody that reveals a deeper, more emotional side to his music.
Jongup is now back with his first mini-album titled āUSā which released earlier today. The album has five tracks starting with the title song āUSā, āPhotoā featuring Bang Yonguk, pre-release single ā āFindā featuring Moon Su-jin, āGOUPā featuring EK from āShow Me the Money 8ā, and his debut single, āHEADACHEā featuring Yunhway.
Along with the featuring of such talented list of artists, Moon Jong-up also continues to explore his musical capabilities in this album, by participating in writing and composing lyrics for āPhotoā, āFindā, and āGOUPā. He further shows why he was the lead vocalist in his former group with āUSā.
With strong vocals and dance as well as the vintage theme aesthetic music video, āUSā has quickly jumped into our playlist and we cannot stop singing to it.
Ahead of his comeback, Jongup spoke with us about his latest album, his growth, B.A.P, Indian fans & more. As 2nd Generation fans, this was a wonderful opportunity to be able to speak with an artist who gained so much fame and made waves, even before internet took over the way it has right now.
From his debut in 2012 as part of B.A.P to now, Jongup believes that among all things, his thoughts have changed the most. He shares that the more he learn and know, the more he need to know and thus, he has a mindset, to live by learning for the rest of his life. He believes that the biggest difference of promoting as a group and as a soloist is that, Ā āNow I have to bear the burden which I shared with the members when I was in a group but at times, itās also good to have that much love alone.ā
The shift from group to solo, along with years of working as an idol has brought about a process of change and growth and opened new perspectives and views for the talented soloist, āThrough many experiences, I have learned and felt that a person cannot live alone in the world. So, I want to say āthank youā to the people who work for me and work with me.ā
His former group B.A.P brought about a bad-boy image which was loved by fans across the world and their debut ep āWarriorā landed at Billboardās World Albums Chart at #10. The group then continuously made waves with their music and topped charts across the world hence showing their global status. Although the members parted ways with their previous company, the boys remain good friends as they continue on their own individual paths while cheering for each other for their solo activities. The boys are also often seen hanging out together hence making their fandom, āBabyā very happy.
While talking about how former B.A.P leader Bang Yong-Guk has participated in his song āPHOTOā as a featuring, Jongup gives hope to the fandom as he assures,
āIf the timing is right, I think a reunion of B.A.P is possible at any time.ā

The day may not be far off, as along with Yonggukās featuring, other B.A.P members Zelo and Youngjae also participated in his Listeners; Listen āUSā and in the video, one could see how they truly enjoyed being with each other. Ā The members shared their honest thought on his comeback as they gave their opinions about how they loved the comeback, Jongupās growth as an artist and that, the fans had lot to expect hence making the fandom anticipate more. This was also the first video in a very long time where the members had appeared together so for B.A.P fans, this was a blessing. The members were definitely right though as with āUSā we see a mature side of Jongup in terms of music, vocals or even style.
Jong-up was also recently cast in āIdol Recipeā and Ā he gave a sneak peak of his character, āMy cast is āJang Junā, a member of a mixed group. He gets caught while dating at work and gets scoldedā, thus building more anticipation for his upcoming appearance.
He shares that in terms of his style of music, over the years, the thing that has changed the most is that, he now listens to all genres and he particularly likes R&B dance hip-hop the most. When it comes to incorporating it to his music, he admits that there are so many genres he want to challenge himself with, but the one that comes to his mind right now is EDM.
For Jongup, the process of creating music/songwriting is mostly done with his friend, Min ā āWe usually start with the track. Sometimes when a track comes out first, we write melodies and lyrics together.ā He further says that he has a lot of influence when it comes to his music but ever since his younger days, he admires Chris Brown and he still loves his music. This however doesnāt come as a surprise to his fans, after all, Jongupās dancing and vocal skills have always been on point.
With āUSā, the title track of this album, Jongup shares that, he liked it as soon as he heard the guide.
āI wanted each track to be different from genre to mood. I had a lot of meetings to go in the direction that I wanted. There were some disappointing parts in the process, but all the processes canāt always go perfectly in the direction I want, so those parts were difficult but overall, this was a great experience. ā ā Jongup on the process of making āUSā
Jongup agrees that he has gotten used to the life of an idol, after all, its been nearly 10 years since he debuted as an idol and if he had a chance to do any special activities with his fans, he would want to go camping with them. He further adds that if he could go back and give an advice to his former self, he would tell himself, āBe nice to Babyā.
āBabyā is the fandom name for B.A.P but now, Jongup also has another fandom name created by the fans themselves, āMOONW4LK.ā Ā He shared his thoughts on his fandom name and also sent a messages for his fans across the world especially in India.
āāMOONW4LKā is such a cute name. I love you always. You know that, all this is done thinking only of āMOONW4LKā, right? As soon as Covid-19 calms down, I will fly to you.ā

So I finalky finished my Starlight Sequence Comparisons. And just a disclaimer: I think all the actors/actresses listed are amazingly talented. I am only rating one performance so who knows why they sounded like they did at any given time. Also note that these are my opinions! So don't freak out at me.
OLC (Ray Shell, Lon Satton)
-Okay so I'm biased in this case but Ray has always one of my favorite Rustys he has an credibly powerful voice with amazing diction. So easy to understand him and because of that you can connect with the emotion that the Starlight sequence is supposed to bring. The actor playing Poppa here also did a marvelous job he kept his voice very powerful and clear. Sometimes actors end up dropping off when Rusty starts singing but he didn't have that issue. I really liked both performances here. Overall one of the best performances of the Starlight sequence. 10/10
NSE (Greg Ellis, Lon Satton)
-Okay so for this production I still thought Rusty did very well. His voice wasn't as powerful as I like and he had a bit of a slurr to his words. However, I could still understand him very clearly thanks to his good diction. Overall I had no problem with his performance, I thought he did good. My problem with this performance is Poppa. Lon Satton was returning to the role and, for whatever reason, despite his amazing performance in the original London cast, he amped up and sounded way too much like a boy band gospel singer. And it just takes me out of the performance because the Starlight Express is supposed to be this God, this Heavenly being and that's why the powerful booming voice really works. It's supposed to leave you breathless in wonder not make you feel like you're in a concert. I have a problem with actors over singing in general so Poppa over singing here kind of took me out of the experience and its a shame because Rusty did fine here. He was just being out shined. 7/10
1988 Bochum (Steven Skeels, Trevor Georges)
-This is another performance I really like. But I do have one issue with it. Although Poppa and Rusty both sound very good, Poppa was a bit too loud, so I couldn't I almost couldn't hear Rusty most of the time. So you have this effect where it sounds like the two voices are competing rather than coming in for a harmony. though they're both singing different lines Poppa and Rusty should be feeling the exact same emotions so they should complement each other. It's always difficult to do Duets like this where you're singing two different lines over top of each other, so I can understand the difficulty they had here with moderating Poppa's voice to accommodate Rusty. So overall it was a very good performance I only had very minor issues with it. 9/10
1987 Japan/Australia (Bobby Collins, Richie Pitts)
-So this is how I die. All right now just a little disclaimer, I love Bobby Collins. I love his performance in a lot of songs from Starlight Express. However, I do not like how during the Starlight sequence, he sounds like Sandy from Daria singing The Starlight sequence. I have no idea what happens to Bobby during the song but he looses a lot of the emotion in his voice and he suddenly gets weird diction too it. I just don't like it. Poppa here had his own issue, he sounded like he was tense during the whole song and singing a bit too much from his throat. So while I like both of the singers in other numbers they just didn't come together to make this a good listen. I can see the appeal to some people, but not for me. It's not the worst performance favorites. 5/10
1991 Bochum (Colin Munro, Stevie Woods)
-I don't have too much to say about this one. I will say it almost had the opposite problem of another version. Rusty was a little bit too overpowering, but not so much that was noticeable for the whole song. Overall both Poppa and Rusty were very good singers, the diction was there. I could use a little more emotion but other then that I don't have many complaints. Good job for both of them. 9/10
2007 UK (Oliver Thornton, Michael Samuels)

Oh my gosh, okay this one is so beautiful. Rusty had wonderful voice that actually reminds me of Ray a little bit. Poppa brought home the whole number, he had this deep, booming, enchanting voice that I personally look for. My only nitpick is at the climax of the song, Poppa didn't quite reach that last note so the song didn't have that full on hit you in the chest feeling, but honestly that's so minor. 10/10
2015 Bochum (Kevin Kohler, David E Moore)
-
Another number that starts stellar! Poppa did so good here, he kept such a strong voice that really hit. It was more aggressive I'm usually used to but I honestly thought that fit the song as well. Kevin Kohler, of course, did good as usual. Unfortunately, he was just no match for Poppa and when it came time to sing his part of the climax you just could not hear him at all. A little bit of a shame but I mean with how loud Poppa was being, anyone would have trouble overpowering his voice. That would have to be fixed with mics rather than just singing alone. Overall its very good preformance. I love the energy that both actors kept up during the whole thing. I only have the one complaint. 8/10
2017 Workshop (George Ure, Mica Paris)
-This is just kind of a fun one for me. Rusty here short of sounds like a bratty teen. He has this problem throughout the whole Musical and I don't know if it was the day or that's how he usually sounds, but it was not my favorite performance for this song. Momma did fairly well for the most part. You can hear in her voice she was having trouble hitting her notes. I wouldn't be surprised if her vocal range was a little higher than was written for the Starlight sequence. As this was the first time Momma had sung to the public, are l I think it was a great first impression. I don't have much to say about this as it of course wasn't professional since it was just a workshop. So, I'll give it a 9/10.
2019 Bochum (Blake Anderson, Bianca Atalaya)
-This version is so underrated. Momma's voice is just as powerful as the original London cast. She sounds gorgeous and she really brought in a lot of emotion. Rusty here as well had a lot of emotion the voices collide and it just hits you. I really loved it. My one complaint is that Rusty did start off a little bit shaky. I was worried for a little while that he wouldn't be as good as he ended up being towards the end of the song. Really good tweaking it would have been perfect. 9/10
30th Ann. (Dan Ellison, Reva Rice)
-And to top it all off, this version may be like my favorite of all time. Dan Ellison as Rusty always puts a smile on my face. He really has earned his hype in the stex fandom. He's got a voice that carries so much emotion and projects like nobody's business. Ms. Reva Rice also does so beautifully as Momma in both productions I've listened to her in. She absolutely hits it out of the ballpark every time. I certainly hope that they'll release an album at some point. Its a gorgeous performance and deserves that sort of preservation that many others have gotten. 10/10

The thick, heavy unnatural silence was breached by the phone call. Taeilās muffled words didnāt reach anyoneās ears but taeyongās reaction was enough for an estimate!
āwhat did taeil say?ā
Taeyong glanced at yutaās hopeful yet helpless face. Taeil's order was far from what yuta's eyes sought. The past ten minutes were spent listening to the unsynchronized ticking of the clocks and some random whispering of the younger ones from the living room. And now, several pairs of eyes were asking for the answers.
āyou will be stationed in nice, f-for two months.ā
Yutaās face hardened at his words. He gulped and opened his mouth to say something but stopped. The words stuck on his tongue would not be able to convey what he wanted to, he thought.
āwith johnny?" Jaehyun uttered.
āno yuta is replacing him" taeyong mumbled, hiding his face in his hands.
Yuta snickered , ā as expected.ā as much as he didnt want to sound bitter, his senses were not cooperating with him too much.
āthis is not about you or johnny. Itās better if you both stay away fr-
ādid taeil tell her the truth?ā yuta coldly cut him off.
āi don't know about that!"
āthen I'll have to do it myself." Yuta stood up, alerting everyone.
ādo not stretch this yuta. This can end right here. Your absence woul-
āyou got it wrong taeyong!ā yuta cackled , āI'm dying to leave this place but don't you think she deserves to know that she's wrong here.ā
āplease yuta. For last time. trust taeil. this is the last thing Iām asking from you. Youād get the chance to explain. Ju-just not yet.ā Yuta scowled at taeyongās hollow pleading.
He inched forward slamming his palms on the table , ā since when did you start playing with wrong players taeyong? you are supposed to be the smarter one here. Who are you fooling here? you think I donāt know why sheās here or jaemin, jeno, jungwoo, chenle, jisung, mark, they donāt have a hint?ā taeyong eyes danced around the room avoiding any contact as yuta continued, āDon't stretch this taeyong. this can end right here. without hurting another one and right before they can get attached. I hope when i come back , you would have sorted this mess out or you wonāt have time to regret this timeā
Scoffing at taeyongās hunched figure, he smacked the table once before leaving the room.
Doyoung Ā followed soon , leaving Jaehyun and Taeyong alone.
Panic engulfed jaehyunās entire being as he pondered over yutaās words.
āheās right. You saw her today. Sheās getting worked up over a stupid misunderstanding and you saw the way taeil is acting! This was never the plan. Sheās not timid. You cannot possibly make her agree to anything at all. Taeil would never let that happen. Heck! Yutaās getting weirder these days. Let her go. We can wait unt-
āWe. Canāt .wait. I know my limits, Jaehyun and two months are enough..ā Taeyong whisper yelled ā I care about her more than youād ever do so get the fuck out of here. You don't get to tell me what I should be doing.ā
Jaehyun leered at the older man, muscles in his jaw twitching at his words Ā āyou have lost it taeyong. if we fail this time, youād be the one to blame.ā
Perfectly ironed shirts were wrinkled as yuta threw them into the case. doyoung was ready to accompany but he refused all the assistance proposed to him. He left nothing. from t-shirts and pants to jumpers, he packed as if he was going for a one way trip to france.
He groaned , jumping on the suitcase, trying to bury the clothes deeper into the case so he could zip it. Once finished,he pushed the cases out of the room and into the hall. locking the door, his running and hurried eyes fell on the opposite room. It was bare of any presence. This was his first time peeking into your room. He was merely looking from afar but the very next second he found himself going through the album resting on the bed covers. a perfect normal photo album was calming enough to subside his inner turmoil. Ā
yuta scrunched his nose at the small girl who was either frowning or crying in most of the pictures. the family of three looked quite happy. But the girl didn't seem to resemble any of the adults. He almost let out a laugh at your wailing form in every other photo. Just looking at the pictures, anyone with two eyes could tell that you were a spoiled kid. No wonder you were full of attitude and ego, he thought.
closing it, he glanced at the room, simple and plain. Not that his own wasnāt but he couldnāt find anything that had prompted you to lock your door for the whole day. He left the room to lock his own but when he pocketed his keys, they met with something at the end of his pants pocket.
A grunt left his throat at the sight of the screws. He had placed them in his pocket to follow your fuming body, the reason of which he didnāt know back then. He was about to throw them on the bed when the album caught his eyes again. He cursed at himself for being so indecisive. Pacing back and forth , he noticed how composed he had suddenly become. He wasnāt feeling anger, just some traces of irritation for the whole drama that had unfolded.
Before he could convince himself otherwise, he took a paper from your desk, scribbled with a trembling hand and left it on the counter.
All while hoping taeil was actually being reasonable , just this once.
12:30 p.m
Looking through the power window, you stared at taeilās arriving form, hands full with brown food bags. He hit the car door with his one knee prompting you to open the door from inside.
āwhen I say you are no better than others ,I really mean you are NO better than them!ā taeil chortled as he shoved a bag into your lap.
āwhat did I do this time?ā you rolled your eyes as you anticipated another moral lecture from him.
ānothing. you are making an old man to get food for you!ā
āand I had suggested the said old man to enter the drive thru!ā
āand drive thru is no fun, duh! The vintage the better!ā
ājust like someone I know! you exclaimed chewing the burger.
āvery funny. You know highway stops are all about breathing in fresh air while stretching your arms, yawning so widely that you have to hide your face in your stretched arm to save yourself from the embarrassment. The first step out of the car after hours of driving feels like restoration of something that was denied to you for such a long time. and the second phase of happiness comes at the engine purring, the feeling is like no other, Iām telling you. but someone lost their chance to experience it .ā
āyou sound poetic taeil but you lack facts. The fresh air you just inhaled is what we consider a polluted one.Iāll prefer to sit inside and miss all that instead of going out and dying. So let go of the Ā fancy peace thoughts and develop your perceptions according to the changing world. The sound of this vintage engine is a source of headache and not happiness.Now lemme eat. IN PEACEā
āweāll see whose perception changesā taeil mumbled munching on the fries.
You both ate in silence for 20 minutes. As the drive continued ,the stilled milieu took you back to the uncertainties you were trying so hard to suppress. When taeil had knocked at the door in the morning, which was beyond expectation at first, he gave you the liberty to question his actions but you had passed that opportunity, precisely to show that you werenāt that greedy. But you were! The endless queries were now making you anxious. Why did taeil come with you? what was the reason behind his pleasant behaviour, how could yuta agree to go like that? sure he liked your presence not more than you did but was he the kind to bow down so easily! Or was he designing something under the colour of acceptance. taken together ,you ended up being the ruthless one here. But the leading one was why did yesterday happen! Multiple stolen glances at Taeil were fairly noticeable; you were waiting for him to just start something. And he perhaps was waiting for you to initiate. Dilemma remained unsolved and you arrived in seoul just like you had left it, but visiting your parents had lessened the encumbrances weighing you down.
You were about to retreat after thanking him when he finally spoke up,
āb.n at 6! No exemption. And instead of racking your brain, just ask. itās simpler than you make it to be y/n.ā
Slamming the door shut , you dragged your feet for the apartment, shaking your head at the man.
Of course he knows everything! And maybe could ask him someday to get your own answers.
10 days later
The gun went off with a bang which if it hadnāt been for the ear protectors and the noiseless sheets, would have deafen your ears. Fingers pointed at the target, eyes coloured with impatience, jungwoo didnāt move. After he was done with his dramatic action, the glass shield slid and he entered inside.
āthis is target A. this one is Bā he asked for a confirmation with his wide eyes which you nodded at.
āright. so!ā he walked circling the dry grass to stand between two targets, āso when I say hit at A, you should be firing at A, precisely aiming anywhere in this space.ā he explained again, hand moving in front of the said space.
āI hit at the center jungwoo! The fucking center! For the first time in two weeks.ā
āyes. You did hit the core but of the wrong target.ā
āhow does it matter? It's a perfect shootā
Jungwoo blinked multiple times focusing on your puzzled face. He wasnāt sure if you were purposely trying to annoy him or you seriously lacked a few braincells to understand where you were wrong!
āat the wrong target.ā he pressed.
ābut I still hit-
āOk. listen to me carefully now. Lets assume A is taeil hyung and B is a killer. If i shout to you that kill B and you mistakenly shoot A instead then youād end up killing taeil hyung instead of the killer and then youād be a killer yourself and even if the shot was perfect it was targeted wrongly thats why when i say hit A, hit A and when i say B, hit B. understood now?ā dumbfounded, you stared at him bobbing your head a few times to indicate you understood. But you really hadnāt.
āYou are not lying right?ā
āDont accuse me of lying!ā
āOh! So you still don-
āhey beautiful!ā
Your heads jerked towards the owner of the voice who had just interrupted the bickering.
ājohnnyā you whispered.
āI meant jungwoo y/n.ā jungwoo sticked his tongue out at you as he jumped forward to hug johnny.
āWhen did you come back?ā
ājust now. I flew directly to Japan from nice. didnāt he inform you all? And why is nobody at home?ā
a small smile graced your face while jungwoo started explaining to him about some business event. You felt like jungwoo wonāt shut up anytime soon so you turned around from the scene and made yourself busy with the magazine. As you were counting the rubber bullets to fill the magazine, a pair of arms touched your both shoulders.
āwh-
āhow are you y/n.ā
āyou done talking to your prince.ā
Jungwoo groaned approaching you with a stern look.
āyouāll have plenty of time to chatter. Focus on your job instead!ā
āugh. You are so annoying. Iām done for the day.ā You announced handing the pistol to him.
āwait! what am I missing here.ā Johnny's eyes shifted , not knowing what was going on in his absence.

āI know all that. Iām asking about the bullets!ā
āTaeil told me to learn some basics to defend myself and jungwoo is my assigned teacher who donāt seem to appreciate my skills at allā
āliar!ā Jungwoo screeched and continued, āsheās poor at shooting, hits anywhere but the point Iām indicating at an-and she never listens to me.ā
Snorting dramatically at the end, he glares at you. you welcomed his complaining speech with a toothy grin which seemed to annoy him more. One thing you had learnt in the past two weeks had been that jungwoo was frustrating when he was hungry and during the time he was supposed to teach you, no food was allowed in the basement, making him a hunger monster.. Johnny watched the exchange with an amused smile, just like you were doing a few minutes ago.
āalright. You both need to chill. Jungwoo, she's not a professional so go easy on her and you! you should listen to him. or if you want I can be your tutor instead!ā
ādonāt hijack here. she's my student and I was chosen because I am the softest and the sweeter one her-
āwho is a second away from having a breakdown!ā
āno go out. You are not invited anymore. nobody is allowed here from 6 to 7:30 .ā Jungwoo announced as he started pushing Johnny out the door.
āāyaa! Jungwoo. Iām go- donāt push me you rascal. I am going. Bye y/n. Iāll be waiting upstairs.ā He shouted and waved in the air which you, for no reason, found yourself returning even if he wasn't going to see it.
As johnny was gone, jungwoo pressed the switch again to close the partition. Coming behind you, his arms embraced you and he placed the gun in your hand as he ducked himself to reach your height with another try to improve the hand-eye coordination. Occupied with each other, you both missed the pair of eyes watching you both Ā in a very unpleasant manner. Ā
āhowās your research going?ā johnny asked with a mouthful of meatballs.
āitās meh! The library is under construction so I can't properly look through books and besides minjun is too whiny to let me do anything. I canāt leave that kid alone so we're always hanging out after 1. Iāve some resources saved so Iām fine for nowā you replied.
āseems like that minjun guy makes you very happy. Is he the one?ā jaehyun took your attention as he pinched his neck. You narrowed your eyes at his unnecessary remark.
āmy happy pill is not minjun but you jaehyun dear. I havenāt seen you in like 5 days i guess? So that eliminated all the reasons for my unhappiness. Your absence is my elixir jae. ā You grinned. Jaheyun pointed his chopstick at you but before he could utter anything, taeyong spoke up.
āwoah. Donāt you two start now.ā he cried.
āheās the one that starts everything! I just continue his shit for it-
āwell I won't initiate if its not for that stinky tongue o-
āShut up before I lock both of you in a room.ā
Hearing several snickers, it seemed like taeyong was the only one getting annoyed, everyone else seemed to be enjoying it.
Just when you were about to pour more juice, everything else finished and left the table. it seemed strange as how fast they were done with their dinner.
āhow can you all eat so quickly?ā doyoung seemed to be more perplexed as he asked taeyong.
ādonāt you both know?ā you settled your chopsticks on the plate as taeyong proceeded, āthe last two to finish cleans the dishes.ā
You instantly scanned the whole dining table and the instant regret of eating like a sloth washed over your face. There were only three left and next second there were only two. Jungwoo shot up from seat with his stuffed mouth, waved and left. Taeyong didnāt waste any time before he also scurried away.
āthis was a conspiracy y/n.ā doyoung murmured.
āI know right. they knew it. w-we have to wash for 14 people.ā
ālook at the brighter side, we donāt have to hurry now.ā
You shrugged at his words, filling your glass with juice again.
āyou should not be drinking juice at nighttime.ā He lectured
āthen why is it on the table?ā
āaish! You are impossible.ā
āso are you.ā
You continued bickering with doyoung until both of you were finished. Like everyone else, you too had started to find joy while annoying doyoung. The responses from him were always a treat. He was also awfully similar to you. the nit-picking in almost everything, forever sceptical body language and lastly the Ā identical frown you both wore all the time. but you were not the one that detected the similarities, it was doyoung himself.
It was not just doyoung! With exception of jaehyun, it seemed like everyone was trying to make you a part of their daily lives. The day after the incident, you had hesitated to knock the door, scared of their reactions towards you but the dark cloud of worry had floated away with the warmest hug jungwoo had welcomed you with. You detected no rejection, no unpleasant remarks, instead you were strictly instructed to not to leave the premises without having dinner. And that one day became two and two a routine. You were confused as you were the reason someone dear to them was somewhere he wasn't meant to be at the moment and yet they treated you like you were their own! For first few days you were at edge, the affection not digestible. Feeding your suspicions , you tried to choke something out of mark who was also your designated driver but all he unveiled was his endless jokes and contagious giggles weaved with the various stories. Each day he recited a new one, sowing the seeds of intimacy with his family which, you couldnāt deny, were sprouting into something unprecedented. However vague it was, you liked it. You liked this unsought acceptance, being included like a family, taking you back in the time. But you never had the luxury of an easy life. Was this worth trusting? Were you ready to return their affection by placing them on the pedestal as same as jungkook and yugyeom. But this house wasn no more reeking of any resentment and you were more than fine with that for now.
"Stack the glasses, I'll pick up the plates"
"This is so tiring" you complained while scraping the sauce on the plates.
"You'll get used to it." Doyoung deadpanned.
"Tell me why i agreed to this!"
"You know the rules. And donāt you remember because of you, I washed for 20 people that day! You deserve the suffering woman!ā
You chuckled at the memory. A few days ago, You, doyoung and hyuck were the last ones remaining. Ā And you had won the rock paper scissors. Though the last two were the supposed cleaners, hyuck had ditched the poor boy, leaving him with extra load.
"You carry some heavy dark clouds on your head man. I don't know how you manage to end up with dirty utensils!every fucking single time" Doyoung glared at your remark and you both continued washing and wiping the dishes side by side.
"Where are the spoons?"
"On the table. Wait , I'll be back in 2 minutes!"
Carrying the cutlery you made your way back to the kitchen but chanting of a familiar name froze you in your steps.
"He's acting like a child johnny! Had he called you after you left?" It was taeyong speaking in a hushed manner, but he was not doing a very good job in whispering.
"Nope. He just took names and contacts of all the whistleblowers and that's it. But i canāt understand the need for that taeyong! I had everything in control. What do you wanna achieve with your stupidity!ā
"Jaemin, hyuck and jisung are in constant contact Ā with him but only to receive the codes he's sending. He's just unreachable and I'm not just talking about his cell network johnny. I'm losing him. He- taeil thought itās for the best. They wonāt see each others face for sometime an-
āAnd everything would be fine? Right? Sounds very legit. Goodluck with daydreaming princess.ā
Hearing some shuffling, you trudged for the kitchen, not wanting them to be aware of your eavesdropping.
Stretching the hem of your knee length skirt with your hands, you kicked your feet in the air to get the non existing elasticity to work. chances were not less but anybody could see you so while cursing at chelin for the tight skirt you made your way inside the office. Your bag made contact with your right hip as you walked into the office corridors. You followed her steps as she stopped at a desk and gave you the papers back.
āchange the folder to a chois file. And sign this receipt. Iāll give you a copy and donāt lose it if you want your degree back.ā You blinked drinking each and every word she said. You again nodded like Ā a lost child and completed the formalities. After a few minutes you were shown to your small desk that was decorated with a pyramid of legal files.
ādo I have to work on theseā you voiced your fear. Even if it was a stipend based internship, nobody would take up that work load.
āoh no! actually I forgot that you were joining but Iāll get it cleaned in the evening so you can adjust for today right?ā before you could respond the sound of her heels faded away in the distance.

A week later
To keep your mind off the distasteful look painted all over mr. kwangās face, you chose to look at his new assistant. The clicking or rather banging of the keys of the computer combined with the occasional scratch of her nails was highly uncomfortable but not more than the man sitting beside her. Your professor didnāt find it amusing that his favourite free fund student was asking for her permitted leave.
āhow much have you progressed with the thesis?ā he scoffed, respectfully dumping the application Ā on the table.
āIāll be working half day. Iām not supposed to accompany them to the hearings so Iāll be back in the university in the late afternoon to research on that.ā
He sighed, clearly not satisfied by the answer, āyou want to skip lectures for an assistant job!ā
āI would be promoted shortly so itās acceptable sir.ā A lie slipped out before you could stop yourself.
āwhat about getting distinction in thesis?ā
āIāll be surrounded with experts so itās not a big deal sir. Ā Iām getting late. Iāll see you in Fridayās lecture.ā In sync with his eyeballs, he rolled his chair to face the other way. Picking up the paper you bowed to his back and left the staffroom , a grin of content bedazzling your face.
"He did what?" Johnny tried hard to control his laughter but the scenario you were narrating was too humorous for him to keep his hands stable on the wheel.
"I'm not kidding John. Yugyeom seriously forgot kook Ā at Busan. But he did go back to get him though but I won't blame gyeom for this error!"
"Oh yeah! Just because jungkook slept in the gym doesn't justify his mistake girl. The driver should count the passengers before taking the wheel. Look at me, i never forget anyone no matter what!"
"Stop blowing your own trumpet. Don't forget you are driving a stolen car!"
Johnny rolled his eyes at the comment , "no, borrowed from mark so I can spend more time with you. stop lawyering and tell me what you did in the break. Apart from flirting with jungwoo of course." Ā

He had lied. You were not sounding awful but he just hated how quickly his heart beat at someone else's mention from your lips. He consumed each and every word like he could be tested on the said information later on. His eyes were glued to the road and his ears to your voice. He wanted nothing more than to be the only one youād see. He wanted nothing more than to be subject of your talking but the voice in the back of his mind said fuck it johnny, you are already asking for too much. He hated how he lost control over his senses whenever you were near him but he was slowly getting used to the dilemma. But the trance he was trapped in quickly broke down when you mentioned something. Abruptly stopping the car by the trees, he faced you to confirm.
"You are doing what?"
"I'm interning. Don't look at me like I stole your candy John. I need money." You innocently replied not aware of the reason behind his sudden dumbfounded expression.
"Shouldn't you be focusing on masters!n yuta is supposed to pay for you so why do y-
" I can work for my money johnny." Frustration made its way to your face as you continued,"drop me home johnny!" You weren't sure whether it was for his mention or him questioning your ability to feed yourself but you were offended.
"Yeah I'm sorry. I won't mention that again" a hollow apology and the car sailed again.
Hiding himself in his car seat, Johnny's fingers hovered over various contacts. Taeyong, taeil, Yuta, jaehyun! He wasn't sure what he wanted to do or whose side he wanted to take. He just wanted to be with you and no one else! but he couldnt do that !
Kicking harshly at the brakes, he screamed. The voice reaching no oneās ears but his own.
Was he asking for too much?

Rating Every Song on Fearless Based on How Gay it is
Hello friends! I still have a few song analyses in the pipeline (and one on Lover the album) but today in honor of Fearless (Taylorās Edition) being announced and Love Story being released in a few hours I thought Iād do something fun to celebrate!
And you know what? Fuck my usual disclaimer, I am the word of god here. Try and change my mind about any of these. I dare you. (I kid I kid this isnāt that serious and youāre free to disagree <3)
1. Fearless 15/10
Everything about this song is so fucking gay oh my god. This isnāt a fruit, this is a whole ass edible arrangement. As a small rural town Gay (my hometown has a population of less that 4,000 and where Iām living now has a population of 2,500) this uh. Hits.

I really was all by myself out on tour and I got this idea for a song about the best first date. I think sometimes when youāre writing love songs, you donāt write them about what youāre going through at the moment, you write about what you wish you had. This just screams baby Tay writing gay folklore to me, about the gay stories she wish she had. Notice how there are no pronouns in this song??? Fruity Iām telling you.
All that to say. Iām crying because the linear note says āI loved you before I met youā and I want to go listen to Long Story Short and cry now.
2. Fifteen 1/10
Objectively pretty straight as sheās singing about her and Abigailās dating boys in HS. And Taylor got with a senior guy. Good for her I suppose.
Unless he was one of the shitty ones in which case.

This however, is a cute line and the whole song makes me warm and nostalgic. You can also hear her crying after the line āand Abigail gave everything she had to a boy who changed his mindā which makes me emo and Iām sure will take on new depth after Abigailās divorce and hurt me even more.

Tried to change the ending indeed.
This is THE Taylor Swift song, and maybe itās the nostalgia talking but damn I still love it. Written because she wanted to change the ending of Romeo and Juliet (how anyone likes RandJ enough to want to rewrite I have no clue.) and/or because her parents didnāt approve of a guy she was seeing. (according to genius, it wouldāve been too early for Joe J so it could possibly be Boys Like Girls frontman, his image did clash with hers and they did release some cute songs together. However if you want my take itās probably folklore about Emily, take for what you will)
This song has very oft gay vibes with the āThey donāt approve of our love angle!ā but uses male pronouns so points redacted for that. HOWEVER this is a very early use of ~the male perspective~ in Taylorās songs and for that it deserves all the love.

The one thing Camilla Cabello and I have in common is loving this song, so I have to live with that for the rest of my life.
This song is very painfully straight.
How can you think this woman is a gold star lesbian.
The only noteworthy thing is that this is one of the few songs she confirms who itās about. The secret message is āLove and Theftā which is the name of a country music duo who went on to open her Fearless tour. Which, does make me side eye this song a little bit.
Still a cute song.

Ah yes. The other THE Taylor Swift song.
You know. If I went to a high school with a cheerleading squad. And I had a crush on a cheerleader. I would blast this song. So for that it gets a 5/10. Otherwise. Fairly straight and fairly iconic.
7. Breathe 8/10
Well. We know this one is about a woman. (Emily Poe for those not in the know. Ha. A rhyme!) That alone has an 8/10. And itās the first time she has a featured artist so bonus points for that!
It was nominated for a Grammy and it fucking lost to Jason Mraz. Whenās the last time you thought about Jason Mraz.
I will not have Kaylor feels on a fucking Fearless song but damn is it VERY easy.

Because yet again we have a very straight song. A good song. That was on Taylorās episode of CSI. But oh dear. Very straight. Gets a measly one point. We started this post off so very very gay but damn. We seem to be nearing the end on a very straight note.
10. The Way I Loved You 20/10
Hey Remember what I said about this album being very straight.
WELL THAT WAS A LIE.
Is this a comphet album or am I projecting.
This is one of my favorite baby gay Taylor songs. Her masterful use of pronouns (he is sensible! And so incredible! And all my single friends are jealous! But I miss screaming and fighting and kissing in the rain, when it was two am and I was cursing your name!) makes the other person sheās singing about completely vague, while we know she isnāt happy with whichever guy sheās dating.
Mayhaps an early reaction to PRomances?
Either way this song is so good, truly an underrated gay gem I mean. Look at it.

Bonus points for the ~drama~ of it all. Added last minute to the album? The iconic throwing of the chair in live performances?? All of it very dramatique and for that we stan.
Still pretty straight.
Also Joe Jonas responded to the song and why do I find his response so damn funny. āItās part of being a musician, I guess. You write songs about each other.ā
This is another song where the idea of Taylorās grown up vocals on this isā¦ā¦ā¦..whew

This gets zero points because itās about her literal mom.

The Freedom of Expression, radio version - Ep 43, July 2016 - Inadequate election coverage by media, Increase in motiveless crime.
Kaoru starts this episode by saying how its still really hot. Joe mentions that its only going to get hotter over the next few weeks, and asks Kaoru if he hates Summer. Kaoru says he hates Summer and Winter. He prefers Spring and Autumn, and will absolutely not be attending any summer fireworks displays or other such summer events. Everyone has summer vacation time, so not matter where you go, its hot, and there are people everywhere. He hates this.
Kaoru then moves on to talk about the new single Utafumi, in particular the special site that has been set up for it. Upon entering the site, the phrase 3å10ē§éć®ēćæ (3mins10secs of pain) appears on screen. This short phrase gives off a kind of instant power, but Kaoru wonders what Joe actually thinks of the song. Firstly, says Joe, the song contains an effortless feel, and does have an instantaneous power to it. For some inexplicable reason, he also feels like the song is enjoyable to listen to. Joe also picks up on something that he said during his Rolling Stone interview with Kaoru the previous week, which is that Dir en grey is very multifaceted when it comes to expression. Just as there a many different angles from which to view a Picaso painting, Joe views Dir's music in the same way. He fell in love with its multi-dimensional sound after seeing the last tour and listening to Utafumi, and wants to delve deeper into it. Kaoru expresses his thanks at such words, and explains that Utafumi is a kind of step in the direction towards the new album. He asks everyone to look forward to that.
Next they welcome Tasai for the Tokyo Sports corner. The first thing Tasai does is apologise for Hiranabe bringing a young woman with him on the last show. To Tasai, its unthinkable to bring a girlfriend to work. Kaoru says he was honestly pretty shocked.
Tasai's first topic relates to the House of Councillors elections, and how all TV stations run election specials on the night after the election has finished. The tv personality Dave Spector has questioned why Japan never shows such election specials on TV before an election. Surely it would be better to get all the info out there to the voters before the election takes place? Joe elaborates on this problem by bringing up the movie 'Pacchigi!/Break through!', by director Izutsu Kazuyuki. Joe had talked with the producer of the movie, who is a Korean resident of Japan. The movie deals with the conflict between a Korean school in Japan and the local Japanese teens. The producer told Joe that advertising the movie was very tough. He had paid a lot of money to a certain tv station for a CM spot, and wanted to use a clip from the one of thr climaxes of the movie where the Korean female lead character (played by Sawajiri Erika) says to the Japanese boy who likes her, 'If you and I were to be together always, can you become Korean?'. Despite being approved by the ethics committee, the tv channel wouldn't accept it. When the movie was promoted on the radio, the director and producer pushed really hard to be able to play the Korean song 'Imjin River', which appears in the movie, but at the last minute, the radio station refused to play it. This illustrates that the media are the most conservative ones out there. Japan needs its media to change first before other change can happen. Tasai adds that there is no law forbidding detailed coverage before an election in Japan, this is entirely self imposed control. Although the likes of Ikegami Akira play an important role in bringing political issues to the forefront, there is still a large build up of frustration surrounding elections in Japan. Kaoru states that if the media did cover elections thoroughly before voting took place, they would be much easier to understand. Joe agrees, saying that if people developed an interest in the small details of the situation, it might be a catalyst for them to check out the actions of political parties in more depth.Ā Kaoru replies that a lot more fishy businesses would come up to the surface if that was the case.
Tasai admits that there are other ways to get information, for example on the internet, but TV is still currently the big one. The only rule is that they are not allowed to tell viewers directly to vote for or not vote for a specific candidate. But there is nothing stopping them from presenting all the information there is, and telling viewers to make thier own decision before an election. Joe wonders which media outlet will ever be the first one to take this step. It will be a very important move if it happens. Tasai thinks it is currently still quite difficult for a tv station to be able to do this. HeĀ also thinks that another important point in relation to the recent election is that young people didn't vote. Kaoru agrees, and says changes in the media would make everything easier to understand for them. Tasai says that in one previous House of Councillors election, the number of voters over age 60 was 12 million, wheras the number of voters in thier 20s in the same election was only 4million. The politicians are therefore always talking about the interests of the elderly..pensions etc, which people in thier 20s don't connect with. Tasai makes a plea for any listerners of this show who are in thier 20s to please go out and vote at election time. Kaoru echoes this sentiment. Joe say politics needs to be more future facing, and brings up the case of a country who did an experiment giving voting rights to 0 year old babies. Thier parents would vote for them in a way which they thought best represented thier future interests.
Kaoru coments that an online voting system is also needed to meet the reality of this younger generation. Tasai thinks that online voting will become a possibility in the near future. Joe comments that given the advanced state of technology in this day and age, an online voting system should not be that hard to organize. At the same time, Kaoru says he does enjoy going to vote in person at the local elementary school (*voting stations are often set up at elementary schools in Japan*), because he would never have any other opportunity to go into such a building, and he finds it quite nostalgic.
Tasai's next story is about a strange incident where a ballet teacher had her thumb cut off by a man. The man knew she would be alone at the ballet studio in the morning. He entered, strangled her till she passed out, and then cut off her thumb with a chisel. He must have had some kind of reason to do this, but no-one knows why. He apparently admitted he had wanted to cut off the little finger, but the ring finger got in the way, so he cut the thumb instead. Tasai doesn't understand why anyone would do this. No-one in the man's neighborhood knows anything about him, which makes him all the more odd. Kaoru comments that even though Japan is known for being a safe country, this kind of thing still happens. Joe asks Tasai if he has seen an increase in this kind of random crime in recent years as a reporter. Tasai says he definitely has. Crimes like murders etc used to be more clear cut in thier motives, such as wanting insurance money etc, but these days there seems to be a lot more thoughtless, maningless crime going on. Joe adds that a lot of these crimes have no apparent motive or end goal. Cases are also on the rise where crimes are commited against unrelated people. Tasai says this must have something to do with the environment people grow up in these days, but what exactly it is, he can't tell. This is unlike Hiranabe, who definitely had a motive for bringing that girl to the studio last week. *wink wink*.
To finish, Kaoru plugs the new jingle campaign, and says he might play some more entries on next week's show. Lastly, he wonders how Dobashi is doing in Rio and makes the realisation that if Dobashi never returns, Hiranabe will have to appear more often instead.

1. superm was another chance for taeminās ever-evolving performance to be showcased. i thought a lot about how to create synergy with these exceptional performers. to put it simply, i wanted us to come off as energetic. but these days iāve had a change of heart. our identity is definitely important. rather than just working hard, for superm to show off their colours well we need to show our personalities; we should be seen as one team. to be able to formulate a solid and clear colour is our homework. thatās why itās regrettable. we couldnāt come up with a novel choreography to carry our new identity. we tried a lot in the practice room. superm seems to have found its musical identity but hasnāt gotten a hold of its performance character yet. the stages are too vague. 2. now that you are finally promoting with your best friend kai in one group, you two mustāve shared your concerns. since this friend is someone who has a lot of passion and ambition, he talks about various things. for instance, this style is pretty good, this choreography is quite trendy. thanks to him iāve learned a lot. he is also very knowledgeable about the latest āhottestā genres. we talk about these things often and even watch videos together. kai gives offĀ āpopularā vibes. compared to him, my interests are quite unusual. nowadays kai is interested in music while i am into science. 3. is it science fiction? these days weāve been watching videos on the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics together. 4. what aspect of it interested you? originally i was very curious, after seeing a recommended video on youtube i learned about quantum mechanics for the first time. i couldnāt understand the explanation, even those who were explaining it said it was a difficult concept. that was very fascinating to me. kind of like magic.Ā 5. are you reading books on the subject too? the subjects of the books i read are different (laughs). thereās a book that was published long ago calledĀ āregarding the pain of others.ā it is a pessimistic book that gathers contradictory opinions of people for instance āpeople find joy in the pain of others, it is instinctual.ā as a celebrity, there are times when you are criticized but there are also times when you receive comfort from people. rather than blaming others, while reading this book, i began to thinkĀ āpeople are like that, at most i shouldnāt behave like them.ā my interests are all over the place. 6. what makes you and kai click? we converse well. our opinions almost never clash and we respect each other. moreover, we fully understand our own roles in superm. 7. what position do you hold in superm? since i canāt ask if itās the main dancer. in pictures and interviews, iām the center. baekhyun hyung is the leader (laughs). 8. when the conversation wasnāt flowing well during the talkshow interview,Ā i saw you neatly concluding it.Ā that does happen. nct and wayv are still in the learning phase. thatās why i first listen to all of their thoughts during interviews then flesh it out with details later. 9. compared to when you set out abroad as shinee then promoting overseas as superm now, the status of k-pop has changed. looking at how superm was able to start off with an arena tour in the us and europe made me feel that k-pop is aĀ āhotā topic. in the past, weād use venues of this scale for smtown concerts. even if you promote mainly in asia, seeing the audience section will make you realise the perception of k-pop has changed. 10. though k-popās scope has expanded and diversified, its definition has become simple. what are your concerns? my first concern is language. after i was able to communicate via language during my japanese activities, there were so many advantages. though each country overseas has its own language, i felt that i needed to learn english first. there are many international fans who want to experience the chemistry between our members, theyād feel much closer to us if we communicated using (a common) language. k-pop isnāt one dimensional. itās not only about the music, there is music video, style, etc. included. people would make dance covers in the past, now they even emulate the styling. all of this is korean pop culture. 11. superm were on the ellen degeneres show and jimmy kimmel live. before we went on the ellen show we really rehearsed the interview a lot. americaās atmosphere is different so you receive questions that are never asked in korea. they donāt disclose the questions in advance either. we were also worried because the emcee could ad-lib. we came up with the most probable questions and practiced, we also received lessons from american comedians. compared to that, we went on jimmy kimmel live without any prep. 12. what went according to plan and what didnāt? the questions were not as intense as expected, ellen was well aware about k-pop culture so it went smoothly. 13. is there a dance genre youāre into these days? contemporary, lyrical hiphop, in the future as superm i think iāll be able to show more, not the kind of dancing that you do after learning a given choreography but the kind that is full of emotions. itās about giving meaning to your gestures. it isnāt out yet but my concert vcr features lyrical hiphop. in it i think iām dancing alone with a giant full moon as my backdrop but get confused when there are two of us, either itās another person or a shadow. a choreographer with a body type similar to mine had to dress in all black to come across as my shadow. i wore an oriental outfit with smokey makeup. 14. how do you usually come up with your ideas? i get inspired by the choreographers and creative directors. i imagine it as we converse then the idea develops. 15. was there a time you were inspired by fashion? of course. art begins with the five senses. what you see with your eyes, the things you can feel, clothes, food, perfume, music that you listen to are all sources of inspiration. i create private accounts to follow fashion brands. 16. having debuted at the age of 16, you are still young but your work experience has been long. i was in certain situations because of this. it doesnāt happen as often now but even in my early 20s, i completely belonged to the senior category at broadcasting stations. they are my juniors but many of them are also hyungs, iām their senior but iām also the youngest. now there are even staff members who are younger than me. theyāre too formal with me (laughs). 17. are there juniors that ask you for advice or help? the superm members! especially ten, he is very curious. when we come out of a company meeting, heāll get surprised and say āwow, hyung everything you said was right.ā i even hear things likeĀ āveteranā andĀ āseer.ā apparently my predictions come true. but i try not to advise them as much. taking the initiative to say something feels overwhelming. 18. born in 1993 between millennials and gen z, do you share any characteristics with those in your age bracket? weāve picked out a few of their traits. the first one isĀ āthey donāt eat fast food.ā me too! i took care of my health well ever since i started out with shinee. i was brainwashed from home to avoid foods that harmed the body. not even ramyeon, snacks were also banned. and just like that in my 20s i started carrying out the regime on my own. itās become a habit to look after my health ever since i moved out. i always eat things that are good for my body, if the hyungs are taking vitamins, iād ask for one too. 19. i suddenly recall a variety show where you were the only one who skipped the sauce and ate the meat on its own! one should not eat irritable foods. my motherās words. 20. how about āthey watch videos on youtube rather than tv. even the ads donāt particularly bother them.ā thatās right. i watch youtube more often than tv, while watching the ads i'd even marvel at their production quality. iāve signed up for the premium package now so i donāt see the ads anymore. 21.Ā āmarryingĀ or wanting to buy their own house.ā i currently live alone and i have no interest in decking out my house. at first, i didnāt think like that but a month later my interest dissipated. iām lazy. itās not like my house is for others to see, iām fine with the incomplete feeling for now. 22. and finallyĀ āthey avoid investing in financial companies.ā i donāt do that. my parents manage that, if thereās a good tip iāll just let them know.Ā 23. hiphop musicians tend to express their success through music. as an idol musician how have you been using the wealth you accumulated all these years? i invest in food instead of saving up (laughs). honestly, i donāt spend much. i donāt have anything i want. though i do spend on others a lot. 24. what kind of household did you grow up in? what gifts did you inherit from your family as a musician? i inherited my body type. all of my cousins have model-like physiques, theyāre taller and slimmer than me. my mother sings well. my father plays instruments as a hobby. oh, and my paternal aunt used to be a ballerina. so perhaps i inherited such genes? 25. youāve been doing the same thing for more than 10 years. what is the purpose behind creating music and showcasing it? in the past, i would think i should do well, i need to be number one, these days iāve become ambitious for other aspects. i take pride in the fact that my work supplies others with positive energy. i feel a sense of accomplishment when fans like my music, i want to make them as happy as i am. everyoneās profession is different but i hope this synergy gained from mutual dependence leaves a good impression. 26. are you still composing songs? i used to but now i only participate in lyric writing. it differs with each song, at times the lyrics are emotional or talk about abstract love. it seems like my next solo album will include a song i wrote the lyrics to. sometimes songs composed by overseas composers might prove too difficult for the general public to understand. so i participate a lot in the arrangement or mixing phase. i point out the parts that should be added to the composition and those that are unneeded. teacher lee soo man does give advice but it often feels like i do the producing of my own solo album. 27. taeminās originality is the clearest when he promotes as a solo artist. which song has best represented your identity? i worked hard on all of them but there was a turning point. at first there wasĀ ādangerā thenĀ āpress your numberā was a conceptual performance, the transition to āmoveā turned out well. i wanted to break out from the typical choreography routine and create my own identity, the resulting performances wereĀ āmoveā andĀ āwant.ā my next solo album is again different. iāve been making a lot of changes these days. 28. you seem to have high standards when it comes to composing music. was there ever an occasion where you absolutely refused to compromise and gave others a hard time? everyone is used to it (laughs). itās something i learned from the head manager hyung whoās been with me since debut. the belief that āthere is nothing that canāt be done. there is no such thing as impossible.ā another team manager hyung would tell me āyou remind me of our headā (laughs). honestly, the staff around me work beyond their given roles and with affection. normally work timings are from 9 to 7, they stay back till 10-11 pm for me. they donāt hold it against me, and when things do well, they too feel a sense of fulfillment together with me. 29. the new unreleased song must be quite different from the original then.Ā there are already 12 versions of the song. when i thought we were somewhat done, we recently started arranging it again (laughs). 30. you hold your body to specific standards for the best performance outcome. i donātĀ ābulk up.ā previously, i used to work out when i ate a lot but my body would feel weighed down, it wasnāt what i wanted. if i gain a lot of muscles or become thick, it hampers my dancing form. thatās why i donāt put on weight. i train my stamina and strength and avoid bulking up my shoulders and arms. 31. by the way, do you do neck exercises as well? i was touched looking at your long neck in the vogue photoshoot. i had been noticing this too, now i know the reason! i think itās because i dance. a lot of resistance goes into the neck when you dance. our head is the heaviest and itās the neck that supports it. it goes away when i rest for a few days. weāre shooting amidst the superm tour maybe thatās why it looks thicker now.Ā 32. an editor who has been watching you closely for a long time said that youāve become extroverted. could it be that experience and relationships have made you comfortable and secure? iāve lowered my guard. i couldnāt reveal my current self to others before. as a child i used to be so introverted that iād hide behind my mother when strangers would get into the elevator. i changed with time.Ā 33. is your ever-present smile a product of your personality or just business decorum? iām always smiling. i even laugh at things other people donāt find funny (laughs). 34. shinee members are currently serving in the army. when theyāre on break what kind of advice or nagging do they subject you to? i wish they would do that. we have a group chat on kakaotalk and i always revive it by askingĀ āwhatās upāĀ āhappy new year.ā but as soon as the conversation picks up they only talk about the army. when i inform them about an issue at the company they say āreally?ā then itās military talk again. when i feel left out and tell them to stop, they reply withĀ āyouāll understand when you get here.ā 35. in your career as a musician, when do you feel the best? when itās time to reveal all that iāve been preparing for so long! it feels different from finishing it. the first stage after debuting, shineeās first concert, performing at tokyo dome, receiving the award... these are the moments that come to mind. 36. watching taemin grow for the past decade has been a huge source of strength. what are your dreams now? there are many. first of all, once shinee comes back again, i want the entire group to give off a feeling of revival. usually after getting discharged, itās hard to keep up with the next generation, i want to avoid that. iāve imagined it all when the shinee members return. second, i want to perform a lot on various stages as a solo artist. superm topped the billboard 200 album chart, itād be nice to enter the top 10 on the hot 100 digital chart as well.Ā 37. you are really talented at setting goals. iāve gotten greedier. itās just not for myself but i want to do it for the fans and members, even the staff. they become my driving force. i really am lucky. everybody works hard but i even get the recognition for it. come to think of it, i was given many opportunities and i worked hard to make the most of them, iām really happy my efforts paid off in the end. iām surrounded by good people. shinee, superm, many people fill in the gaps for me that i canāt solve on my own. 38. supermās concert title isĀ āwe are the future.ā when you hear the wordĀ āfutureā what are you reminded of? first, itās h.o.t. (laughs). future-oriented things come to mind like artificial intelligence, drones, 3d hologram concerts. then again, in the future, though people might be able to watch concerts through holograms, i think humans will not give up on the tasks they themselves can do. my work will still be the same in the future. 39. the reason you donāt write anything on instagram. i donāt have anything to say yet (laughs). i donāt know if i should make my instagram cool or approachable. when fretting between writing a caption or using an emoticon, i just end up leaving it blank. actually i signed up after my manager hyung suggested that instagram would be good. so iāve made one but i still donāt know what to upload. i get teased by the people around me for putting up selfies. i even took lots of pictures especially for instagram but... 40. did you not post the pictures? the point of instagram is real-time communication. is that so! i didnāt know (laughs).

A week or two before this Dustās deadline, we got our first tour announcement by email in more than a year. It was the first of deluge, as live music looks to be coming back with a vengeance starting this summer and really picking up steam around September. Meanwhile, we celebrate our newly vaxxed (or for our Canadian correspondents half-vaxxed) status with tentative steps outside. Your editor had her first beer at a brew pub in mid-May, and it was stupendous. Also stupendous, the onslaught of new music, which has, if anything, accelerated. This month, contributors include all the regulars plus a few new people: Jennifer Kelly, Bill Meyer, Patrick Masterson, Ray Garraty, Tim Clarke, Andrew Forell, Ian Mathers, Bryon Hayes, Jonathan Shaw and Chris Liberato. Like a lot of us, Portland-based noise artist Randall Taylor discovered the solace of long walks during the pandemic. His work, which has always used tape degradation to explore the intersection of time, loss and technology, shifted to incorporate another source of decay: the natural world. So, in opening salvo, āBlooming,ā alongside blistering onslaughts of eroded guitar sound, it is possible to hear the sounds of a fertile garden ā birds, insects, air movement. You can nearly smell the flowers and feel the sunshine on your skin. āThe New Normalā explores sounds of creaking, friction-y word and metal, alongside pristine chimes of synthetic tone. It is uneasy, with skittering string-like squeaks and swoops, but also deeply meditative; it shifts from moment to moment from anxiety to provisional acceptance, much as we all did last year, staring out our windows. Overall, the tone is elegiac, gorgeous, but Randall does not hesitate to introduce dissonance. āHeaviest Weightā thunders with frayed bass tones, a weight and a threat in their subliminal pulse. The contrast between that ominous sound and purer, clearer layers of melody, makes for unsettling listeningāare we at war or peace, happy or sad, agitated or calm? And yet, perhaps thatās the point, that the past year has been swirl of feelings, boredom alongside anxiety, hope lighting the corners of our listlessness, the smell of flowers pleasing but faintly reminiscent of funerals. Blooming decocts this mix into sound.

Astute Palate by Astute Palate
Astute Palate is a hastily assembled group of rockers summoned to support David Nance in Philly on a date when he couldnāt bring the David Nance Band. Participants included Richie Records proprietor Richie Charles, Lanternās Emily Robb, Writhing Squares/Purling Hiss/all around Philadelphia regular Daniel Provenzano on bass and, of course, Nance himself, all huddled together in Robbās recording studio for a weekend together. None of this origin story does justice, however, to the pure liquid fire of this one-off musical collaboration, dominated by Nanceās viscous, distorted blues-inflected guitar wail, but knocked sideways by brute force drumming, wild hypnotic bass lines and the ritual incantation of Nance (and later Robb) singing. The long āStall Outā does anything but, rampaging free-range in unbridled Crazy Horse/Allmans-style abandon for close to ten minutes without a single sputter. āA Little Proofā is somehow simultaneously heavier and more country, spinning out the soul-blues jams like a younger, unrulier cousin to MC5. āTreadinā Schuylkillā gives Provenzano the spotlight, opening with a growling bass solo soon joined by heavy psych guitars (a nod, perhaps, to the illustrious locals in Bardo Pond). If Nance et. al. can pull stuff this fine out in a stray road warrior weekend, what are the rest of you doing with your lives?

Axis: Sova is a combo of three Chicago guys plus one drum machine, which had already been inactive for two or three seasons before the initial COVID lockdown. This digital EP is their way of clearing up some business that could no longer remain undone. The title tune, āFractal USA,ā is a remake of a song from the early days, when the ābandā was Brett Sovaās solo project, to full-on, no your pants arenāt tight enough rock band. They just needed you to know about the evolution, you see, so go ahead, do some scissor kicks and gurn while they windmill away; you have enough money saved up from not seeing live music to pay the inevitable chiropractor bill. āCaramelā hypothesizes that a Cluster song thatās played twice as loud and twice as long is twice as good; not sure if I agree, but itās still not bad at all. Maybe you got a little weird after a few months of putting on your best mask for your daily trip to see if the stimulus check was in the mailbox? The Brenda Ray-meets-Old Black mash up, ā(Donāt Wanna Have That) Dream,ā is proof that while you were alone, you werenāt alone. If youāve made it this far, you donāt need to have the fourth track described, so letās just say that itās longer.

While perhaps best known as half of the trombone-centric new music duo RAGE Thormbones, Mattie Barbier is a member of several other combos and a sonic researcher under their own name. Three Spaces, which is a single, album-length sound file, has the air of experimentation about it. āWhat do I do,ā one can imagine Barbier asking themself, āwhen I canāt play with other people?ā Make music at home, and out of whatās at home, is the obvious answer. But doing isnāt the only point here; the outcome also matters, and while what Barbier has accomplished with Three Spaces sounds quite different from the RAGE Thormbones live experience, it registers quite strongly. Barbier has combined long tones and melodic fragments played on euphonium, trombone and reed organ, that were recorded both inside and outside of their home. Carefully layered, the source material combines into a sound rather like a bellās toll, which over the course of nearly 39 minutes swells and recedes, but never quite decays; it ends with an imposed rather than natural fade-out. The sound is as deep as it is expansive, inviting the listener to let themselves fall ever father into its realm.

One of the more pleasant surprises this year is the resuscitation of Untoldās Hemlock Recordings imprint. A vital voice in the post-dubstep fracas at the turn of the ā10s thanks to releases from Hessle Audioās Pearson Sound (when he was still Ramadanman) and Pangaea, James Blake, FaltyDL and Hodge to name but a handful, the label went dormant following a Ploy 12ā in 2017 before the surprise announcement of Londoner Beneathās On Tilt, which sounds every bit the sensible alliance in practice it looks on paper: These are low-end rumblers with irregular rhythms and spare melodic tics that worm their way into your brain in the best bone-humming fashion (see āShamblingā or āLesser Circulationā for a good example). Who knows how long the return will last, but for a certain stripe of DMZ-damaged devotee and pretty much no one else, itāll feel good to have some Hemlock in your life again. Tilt back, pour in.

More metal comes from South America than Spain, but these Europeans clear the high bar set by Latin America scenesters. The albumās title states that it was inspired by āEl SueƱo De La RazĆ³n Produce Monstruos.ā That can testify both to lasting influence of Goyaās art and to the laziness of the current culture which seeks inspiration only from the most popular pictorial art of the past. The track āIgnorance and The Grotesqueā perfectly captures the whole mood of the disc: it balances ignorant speeds, undecipherable vocals and grotesque parts with piano interludes and doom-ish atmosphere. It would be better without the grotesque, but thatās probably part of the baggage.

You might worry, occasionally, that Burial was becoming a victim of diminishing returns. Here, as ever, he uses a narrow palette to create tracks that few can emulate. However, even though the music has its rewards, it doesnāt clear the very high bar that his previous work has set. Thus āDark Gethsemaneā rides a 4/4 beat, angelic murmurs, vinyl crackle and a tightly ratcheted build that morphs into a sermon led by the repeated invocation āWe must shock this nation with the power of love.ā As his vocal samples become more explicit, the mystery of his music fades. This is all promise and no real resolution. āSpace Cadetā likewise sounds both gorgeous and minor with its soul gospel refrain āTake Me Higherā over an old-school jungle beat. At six plus minutes it would have been enough. It continues another three with an almost cartoonish second movement that lacks the subtlety that characterizes Burialās best work.

While COVID messed with most peopleās lives, it was both an endgame and an opportunity for CĆ©cile Schott, the Frenchwoman who records under the name Colleen. She was just coming out of a series of health and personal dislocations, which resulted in her being newly healthy but alone in a new town just as the lockdown came down. Clearly, this was not a time for half measures, so she selected an entirely new instrumental set-up and settled in to make a record that reflected what sheād been through. Out went the viola da gamba and melodica that have figured prominently on her last few albums; in came a Moog synthesizer, a Yamaha organ, a tape echo and a drum machine.Ā Ā
Colleenās voice, of course, remains the same. Airy and precise, her delivery doesnāt match the gravity of the experiences her songs describe. But that sense of remove is, perhaps, a reflection of one of adversityās lessons; if you donāt stay stuck, you can wind up somewhere quite different. Between the keyboardsā cycling melodies and the drum machineās fizzy beats, the music on The Tunnel and the Clearing imparts a sense of motion that carries her light voice along for the ride, dropping painful sentiments and letting them fall behind.

Ā Current Joys ā Voyager (Secretly Canadian)

Nick Rattigan has been releasing music under the name Current Joys since 2013, and Voyager is his latest offering. Itās a dramatic and often brilliant collection of songs, bringing to mind the urgent rhythmic drive of Spoon, the dour grandeur of The Cure and the unapologetic emotional heft of Bright Eyes or early Arcade Fire. On Voyagerās standout, āAmerican Honey,ā a simple strummed backing and Rattiganās vocal delivery are potent enough, but itās the string section that proves devastating, cycling around for multiple punches to the gut. While more stripped-back songs such as āBig Starā and āThe Spirit or the Curseā offer some respite along the way, Voyager does prove a little unwieldy. With 16 tracks clocking in at nearly an hour, the albumās execution doesnāt quite live up to its ambition. The wonky tom-tom rhythms of āBreaking the Wavesā are more distracting than interesting; a serviceable cover of Rowland S. Howardās āShiversā feels more like an acknowledgment of influence than a striking interpretation; and the combined six minutes of the two-part instrumental title track may have worked better as shorter interludes. Nevertheless, plenty of Voyagerās tracks demonstrate Rattiganās knack for a raw, emotive indie-rock tune.

Ā Ducks Ltd ā Get Bleak EP (Carpark Records)

Toronto duo Ducks Ltd celebrates signing to Carpark with an expanded re-release of their 2018 debut EP Get Bleak. The pair ā Tom Mcgreevy on vocals, rhythm and bass guitars and Evan Lewis on lead guitar ā bonded over a shared love of 1980s indie bands. Their intricately constructed guitar interplay carries the DNA of Postcard and C86 over meaty bass lines that evoke Mighty Mighty as much as Orange Juice and McCarthy. The sprightly music belies the miserablism of the lyrics that focus on FOMO, poor decisions, screen induced isolation, the corrosive impact of gentrification and gig economies. Mcgreevy and Lewis donāt wallow, however. Their jaunty jangle is a paean to the joys of jumping about and singing along with those new favorite songs that suddenly mean everything and will stick with you long after the worldās shit slopes your shoulders.

Itās easy to take Field Music for granted. Since 2005, the Brewis brothers have been making smartly composed and tightly executed guitar pop with obvious debts to The Beatles and XTC, and all their albums have fallen somewhere along the continuum from good to great (my personal favorites are 2010ās Measure and 2012ās Plumb). Album number eight, Flat White Moon, features the usual balance between Peterās more pensive, bittersweet numbers with greater focus on piano and strings, such as āOrion From the Streetā and āWhen You Last Heard From Linda,ā and Davidās funkier, more staccato cuts, such as āNo Pressureā and āIām the One Who Wants to Be With You.ā Twelve songs, 40 minutes, tunes for days ā whatās not to love? If youāve yet to get acquainted with Field Music, Flat White Moon is as good an introduction as any.

With Non-Dweller, we have a trio of Bay-Area improvisers who certainly do not reside in one place for very long. There is an agitated freneticism about their interactions here, the performers acting like electrons seeking to release energy and break out of orbit. Each player brings a unique collection of timbres to the party with their implement of choice. Heule is a percussionist by trade yet focuses on extended techniques ā mainly friction-based ā as he wrests an unholy wail from the maw of his bass drum. Fluke-Mogulās violin sways between tone generator and noise source. Nishi-Smith is a classically trained pianist who here is bowing and plucking the koto, or Japanese zither. The trio spend most of their time in sparring mode, their energies unleashed with synchrony as if in an elaborate dance. It is clear they have collaborated before. Heule and Nishi-Smith have been at it for over a decade; Fluke-Mogul joined the party in 2019. The most gorgeous moments happen when all three players are focused on friction: Heule slides across his drum, Fluke-Mogul soars with their violin and Nishi-Smith gracefully bows her koto. The energy is focused and particles collide, creating waves of tone. The players wrestle intensity into submission, and the ensuing sonorities are unmissable.

Ever since FMB DZ got shot and moved out of Detroit, he has continued to release angry music. (He may not be more productive after the assault, but heās certainly not less so.) War Zone is his latest effort, along with The Gift 3 and Ape Season, and DZ is back in his paranoiac mode and ready for vengeance. Thatās hardly unusual in this type of music but DZ stands out because heās a bit angrier, a bit more pressing and a bit more gifted than the next man. He doesnāt outdo himself in this tape, but rather mostly follows the blueprint of Ape Season. The standout track is āSpin Again.ā

Ā Ian M Fraser ā Berserk (Superpang)
Berserk by Ian M Fraser
Ian M Fraser is kind enough to provide details about how he created and edited Berserk, although relatively few listeners are going to really know what ānonlinear feedback systems and waveset synthesisā are, let alone āsensormonitor primitives auditory perception softwareā. And fewer still will be able to focus on what that might mean while Berserk is actually playing, because the output of those programs and systems is immediately, viscerally clear. If a computer were actually capable of going rabid, feral, well, berserk, the human mind might imagine it sounds something like this. Over four shorter tracks and the relatively epic 8:26 of āThe Cannibal,ā Fraser either coaxes or allows (or both) his tools into the equivalent of something like what someone who knew very little about both genres might imagine is like a power electronics act playing free jazz or vice versa. It is absolutely viscerally thrilling (albeit probably easier to repeat at this length of 16 minutes than, say, 50) and will do the track the next time you feel like your brain needs a good hard scrub.

Itās tough to figure out if the bandās name is meant specifically to apply to D. Cornejo (sole member of Human Failure) or to the general field of human failure, which grows ever more capacious. Whatever the intent, Human Failure makes thoroughly unlovable music, pitched somewhere on the continuum that runs from the primitivist death metal to stenchcore to harsh noise. This reviewer is especially fond (yep, somehow thatās the only word for it) of the title track of this 10ā record: āCrown on the Head of a King of Mudā sloughs and slogs along for two minutes, sort of like one of the ripest zombies in Romeroās Day of the Dead (1985), wandering about and slowly falling to pieces in Floridaās tumid heat. Just as that last bit of flesh is poised to slide from bone, the song unexpectedly breaks into a run. Where is it going? Whatās the rush? No one knows. Things eventually bottom out into āDisassembling Morality,ā a static-and-distortion laden electronic interlude that might squeak and spark for a bit too long ā but then āYour Hope Is a Nooseā shambles into the frame. That zombie seems to have found some equally noisome and truculent friends. They djent and pogo around for a while, and the song has a lot more fun than seems called for by the band name. Cornejo might be pissed off by the myriad manmade disasters and outright catastrophes that burden the earthball (heās sure angry as heck about somethingā¦). But the record ends up being sort of successful, if deafening, grinding, growling stench is on the agenda. All things considered, why wouldnāt it be?

Ten / Sync was recorded in September, 2020; not exactly lockdown time, but certainly not out of the pandemic woods. Itās no small task to keep any 50-strong orchestra going, let alone one devoted to experimental music. So, if you already have one, then having it perform during a pandemic is just another challenge among many. So, the Swiss-based orchestra assembled three groups of musicians, numbering 31 in all, and assembled their contributions during post-production. While this did not provide the social experience that IMOās gatherings usually impart to participants, an outcome that just isnāt the same seems awfully representative of the time, right? And since one Insub Meta Orchestra subspeciality is making music that sounds like it was performed by many fewer players than were actually present, this collection of sustained chords concealing tiny actions and apparently disassembled passages is actually very representative of the ensembleās music.

With her own group, the Elder Ones, and in Mary Halvorsonās Code Girl, singer Amirtha Kidambi shows how far you can take a song while still giving the meanings of words and the boundaries of form their dues. But Neutral Love, like her two tapes with Lea Bertucci, explores the territory outside the tower of song. The main structures for this improvised encounter with electric guitarist Matteo Liberatore seem to be a shared agreement to exclude certain options. Song form and overt displays of chops are right out; the patient manipulation of sounds is where itās at. Liberatore opts mostly for swelling and subsiding resonations, while Kidambi spends a lot of time finding out whatās hiding at the back of her throat, drawing it out, and then tying it into elaborate shapes. Patient and eerie, these four tracks find a place adjacent to Charalambides at their most abstract, and make it their own.

KOSMODEMONIC - LIMINAL LIGHT by KOSMODEMONIC
NYC outfit Kosmodemonic is among the recent wave of metal bands attempting to effect an organic-sounding synthesis of numerous subgenres: a slurry of sludge, a bit of black metal, a dose of doom, and a hit or two of the lysergic. When it works ā as it does on a number of tracks on the bandās long new cassette Liminal Light ā itās an exciting sound. Songs like āMoiraiā and āBroken Crownā manage to couple tuneful riffs, dirty tone and a muscular bottom end in ways that feel thumping, groovy and pretty weird. Youāll want to bump your butt around even as youāre looking for something to break. But the tape is pretty long, and the further afield Kosmodemonic gets from that mid-tempo groove, the more middling (and sometimes muddled) the material sounds. āWith Majestyā canāt quite find its rhythmic footing in its more technical passages, and the songās sludgier sections feel like compromises, rather than interesting maneuvers. But the record begins and finishes with really strong songs. Both āDrown in Droneā and āUnnaming Unlearningā embrace scale, letting their big riffs rip. When āUnnaming Unlearningā slips into complex sections of blackened and distorted dissonance, the drama surges. Formal experiment and manipulation of mood fold into each other. The song gets interesting, even as itās reaching for a peak. And then it ends, suddenly, violently. Itās pretty good. Your impulse is to flip the tape and hear it again, which is just what Kosmodemonic wants you to do. Well played, dudes.

Earth Bow by Sarah Louise
Asheville-based songwriter Sarah Louise wants to be your personal nature interpreter. The titles of her recordings, from her debut Field Guide through Deeper Woods and Nighttime Birds and Morning Stars are like planetary signposts pointing to a more intimate relationship with our planet as a living organism. With each successive release, her music has also become more and more organic sounding, culminating with Earth Bow, in which Louise herself is arms deep in humus, communing with birds and insects. Recordings of creation feature prominently; katydids, spring peeper frogs, a creek and various birds are credited as providing additional singing, augmenting the artistās own mellifluous voice. For a recording in which the track titles and lyrics are focused on nature and Louiseās experiences therein, there are a lot of digital elements. Her 12-string guitar is prominent in places, but synths are everywhere: in the background, bouncing around like shooting stars, and mimicking the various fauna that they accompany. Yet the earthly and the machine-made are not juxtaposed, they are blended. The vocals, which center the recordings, tie both elements together nicely. Earth Bow is a tasty concoction, in which a variety of ingredients are married in botanical bliss.

Nigeriaās altĆ© scene has been bubbling for a couple of years now on the backs of guys like Odunsi (The Engine) and Santi, and Gabriel Obi bka Le Mav is no stranger to the fray, having produced Santiās āSparky,ā AylĆø and a recurring favorite of his, singer Tay Iwar. The two have already collaborated at length (for songs off Iwarās debut album Gemini in 2019, as well as the entirety of last yearās Gold EP), so the comfort level here is established. It shows: Iwarās smooth-as vocals match Le Mavās breezy piano descent and gentle rhythmic shuffle in an easygoing song that matches anything you might hear coming from Miguel, Frank Ocean or the Sun-El Musician orbit. āIf it feels right, touch the sky,ā Iwar suggests early on. Well, donāt mind if I do.

I Remember Mama by Sugar Minott
At some point after Lincoln Barrington Minott had left Kingston and his early dancehall and lovers rock legacy with Studio One and Black Roots behind for cooler climates and the old world of London, he ran into producer Steve Parr at the Wackies offices. Story goes that the two decided to start up Sound Design Studio with the intent to record and mix for ads, film and music ā but scant evidence of this idea exists beyond āI Remember Mama,ā released on 7ā and 12ā in 1985 and reissued for the first time since via Stuart Leath and his long-trusted Emotional Rescue imprint. Parr does most of the work on the recording (Andy MacDonald shines on tenor sax and Paul Uden guitar in the original credits), but itās all about the sweetness Sugar brings to the table: With backing from two accomplished performers in their own right, Janette Sewell and Shola Phillips, Minottās naturally relaxed delivery shines through on this. āSound Designā is a dubbier instrumental version that retains Sewellās and Phillipsā vocals, and Dan Tyler (half of Idjut Boys) provides an even spacier, handclap-laden 11-minute remix, but while both variants are excellent, the boogie of the original is unassailable. Look for the vinyl to hit in July.

Ā Jessica Ackerley ā Morning/mourning (Cacophonous Revival)

It makes sense that Wendy Eisenberg wrote the liner notes to Morning/mourning, since they and Jessica Ackerley are bound by a shared commitment to string-craft. Both have a deep idiomatic foundation in jazz guitar, but neither is willing to be confined by what theyāve learned. In the case of Morning/mourning, that means that patiently paced ruminations upon Derek Bailey-like harmonics sit side by side with frantic but rigorously scripted forays that sound a bit like Jim Hall might if he input the contents of his French press intravenously. This albumās nine tracks observe passings and new beginnings, since Ackerley pulled the recording together while in quarantine, shortly before leaving Manhattan for Honolulu, and titled some of them in tribute to a pair of guitar teachers who were taken by 2020. But in their attention to tone, harmony, velocity and structure, these pieces, like Eisenbergās records, speak as much to intellect as to emotion.

Ā Nadja & Disrotted ā Split (Roman Numeral Records)

It makes a certain kind of sense for Nadja and Disrotted to tackle a split together; although both bands traffic in a particularly foreboding strain of doom metal, they also share a weird sort of comfort. Thereās a sense more of horrible things happening around you than to you, like youāre in the eye of the storm or maybe in a bathysphere plunged to crushing depths. There is a precision to the menace, a measured quality to the noise. And they get there when they get there; as Dustedās Jonathan Shaw pointed out in his review of Disrottedās Cryongenics, āPace seems to be the point.ā This excellent split doesnāt shy away from these commonalities while still highlighting the distinct timbres of each act, with Nadja settling into and then returning to one of their indelibly titanic bass riffs throughout the 19-minute āFrom the Lips of a Ghost in the Shadow of a Unicorn's Dreamā and Disrotted somehow conjuring the feeling of a massive structure corroding and collapsing on the 15-minute āPastures for the Benightedā. When the latter slams to a half, one last hit echoing away, the listener may find themselves feeling equally relieved the onslaught is over and kind of missing both sidesā pulverizing embrace.

Nasimiyuās songs bounce and shimmy with complex rhythms, her background as a dancer and percussionist for Kabells and Sharkmuffin coming through in the intricate interplay of handclaps, breathy beat-boxing, rattling metal implements, all manner of drums and, not least, her lithe, twining vocal lines. āWatercolorā blossoms out of a burst of choral ālaās, each note allowed to flower briefly before behind cut off with a knife-edge; these are organic sounds shaped with mechanical precision. Against this background, Nasimiyu herself enters, her voice fluttery and syncopated, a bit like Neneh Cherry. The mix is full of separate elements, the backing vocals, a synthesizer working as a bass, handclaps, Nasimiyuās singing, but the song remains light and translucent. āFeelings,ā sings Nasimiyu, āI am in my feelings,ā and so, for a moment, are we. Nasimiyu is half Kenyan and half Scandinavian-American, and you can hear a bit of East Africa in the surging sweetness of choral singing on āImmigrant Hustle.ā But thereās a post-modern gloss over everything, as the singer brings in sonic elements from jazz, electronica, dance, pop and afro-beat. Yet however many layers are added, the sound remains bright and clear, a bead curtain of musical sensation whose elements click faintly as they brush together, but remain essentially separate.

Multi-instrumentalist and producer Carlos NiƱo latest album which straddles and largely crosses the line between spiritual jazz and new age ambience features friends from both worlds including Shabaka Hutchings, Jamael Dean, Dntel and Laraaji. NiƱo, who plays percussion and synthesizer, edited, mixed and produced the album from recordings made in 2019 and 2020 in a variety of settings. The results are largely low-key soundscapes designed to assist meditation on the fields and current of the title. Much evocation of the natural world, chiming eastern influenced percussion and layers of acoustic and synthetic keys that are lovely but tend to lull. It is the slightly disruptive reeds that prick the ears here, Aaron Hallās plangent tenor on āNow the background is foreground,ā Devin Danielsā alto phrasing on āTogetherā and Hutchingsā expressive duet with Dean on āPlease, wake up.ā

The normally ultra-productive Shane Parish didnāt put out a lot of music in 2020, and none of what did come out was recorded that year. It turns out that he was busy giving guitar lessons via zoom and moving from North Carolina to Georgia, but weāre well into a new year and heās back in Bandcamp. This three tune EP doesnāt declare a new direction, of which Parish has had many, so much as an integration of his interests in American folk music and far Eastern tonalities. Simultaneously familiar and alien, but above all propulsive, it serves notice that the time for reflection has passed.

The thing that gets your attention about SĆ©ketxe isā¦ well, everything: how many of them there are (i.e., how you canāt really tell whoās in the group and who isnāt), how theyāre all propellant, a musical bottle rocket bursting out of your speakers, confrontationally in your face on camera ā and how much fun it looks like theyāre having. Somewhere out there beyond the reaches of kuduro and Mystikal lie the Angolan barks and rasps of this youthful sextet, who trade verses (and a soothing harmony drizzled right across the madness at around 1:40) among one another over an Eddy Tussa sample on a beat by producer about town Smash Midas. What are they on about? My Portuguese is nonexistent, let alone my Luandan slang, but even I can tell that title translates to āluxury casket.ā Anyway, itās bonkers and if youāre looking for a jolt your morning joe doesnāt deliver anymore, SĆ©ketxe oughta do it. Youāll never catch me thanking an algorithm, but I guess itās true the maths can serve it up right every once in a while. SĆ©ketxe is the proof.

You And Me And Everything by TÅth
The title of Alex Tothās solo debut, Practice Magic and Seek Professional Help When Necessary, alludes to his belief in music as therapy āĀ that thereās an alchemy in the process, yet one that canāt necessarily be depended on to pull you out of an emotional hole when that hole gets too deep. On his new album, You and Me and Everything, all of his recent personal struggles are out in the open. Thereās the tale of when he was so fucked up he couldnāt play trumpet at a family funeral (āTurnaround (Cocaine Song)ā); thereās leaning on songwriting as a means to process the pain of heartbreak (āGuitars are Better Than Synthesizers for Writing Through Hard Timesā); and thereās his ongoing battle with anxiety (āButterfliesā). While such heavy emotional terrain could prove hard-going, Toth approaches everything with a playfulness, a lightness of touch and a gentle haze to the production. Plus, he gets a helping hand from Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak, Flock of Dimes), who lends backing vocals to standout āDaffadowndilly,ā which taps into the woozy gorgeousness of prime Robert Wyatt.

For people with busy performance schedules, 2020 posed a problem; how do you stay busy and creative when you canāt do what you usually do? Mara Winter, an American-born, Swiss-based flute player who specializes in Renaissance-era repertoire and instruments, used it to forge a new creative identity. In partnership with experimental composer and multi-instrumentalist Clara de AsĆs, she began exploring the commonalities between early, composed music and contemporary approaches and developed a platform to disseminate documents of that research into the world. Rise, follow, the inaugural release of Discreet Editions, is an hour-long piece for two Renaissance-style bass flutes played by Winter and Johanna Bartz. The two musicians played long, overlapping tones with contrast attacks, pushing on until they grew so tired from hefting those woodwinds that they just couldnāt play anymore. Effectively the performance unit is a trio, since the two musicians had to accommodate or collaborate with the reverberant acoustics of Baselās KartƤuserkirche. The churchās echo threw sounds back at the player, turning pure tones into blurred timbres. While the instrumentation is antique, the ideas about sound combination and endurance have more to do with Morton Feldman, Phill Niblock and AĆne OāDwyer. The result is music that is simultaneously meditative and as heavy as a bench-pressing competition.

Ā Wurld Series ā Whatās Growing (Melted Ice Cream)
What's Growing by Wurld Series
Some reviewers of Whatās Growing, the second album by New Zealandās Wurld Series, have managed to avoid making Pavement comparisons, but itās hard to fathom their restraint. Brief opener āHarvesterā feels like youāre being dropped mid-solo into a random Wowee Zowee track; the guitar tone on lead single āNap Gate,ā on the other hand, sounds like it's nicked straight from Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. And while singer/guitarist Luke Towart doesnāt attempt to match Malkmusā flamboyance in the vocal delivery department, their voices and wry lyrical observations bear a distinct resemblance to one another. āCaught beneath a dull blade / What a mess that would makeā he sings on āDistant Businessā before the song reaches its finale where guitar solos blast off from atop other guitar solos in an array of complementary textures. But besides being a ridiculously fun guitar pop record, Whatās Growing is also threaded through with a British psych folk vibe replete with Mellotron flute ā and the two styles blend seamlessly together thanks to Towartās partner in crime, producer/drummer Brian Feary (Salad Boys, Dance Asthmatics). So, whether you're looking for a great summer indie rock record or youāve ever wondered what the Fab Five from Stockton mightāve sounded like if theyād stuck to short songs and had more flutes, this oneās for you.

Tom said from behind as he entered the house with Haz, āyes you did yesterday only you took it from my bag at schoolā both of you now started arguing. Nikki and your mom burst into laughter after hearing it. That was the beginning of your love story.

After a few minutes you heard your phone buzzing and you smiled as you looked to see who was calling. It was Zendaya, face timing you. You had seriously wished to talk to someone right now. You have very few close friends in the industry and Zendaya was one of them. You collaborated with her for your bad blood music video and you guys clicked instantly from that day you became really close. She was your 3am BFF and you both knew each other's darkest secrets. You picked up the call.
Ā "So Haz called you up didn't he?"
Ā "Bingo!! So what are you thinking?" Zendaya laughed
Ā "I don't know Z. I just feel scared. I know I have met him a couple of times during my Christmas visits after everything happened Ā but that was just a one day thing and this whole 10 day trip is freaking me out. I also don't want to disappoint Haz. I missed all of his birthdays for the past few years on purpose just to avoid Tom."
Ā " You are just over thinking babe everything will be fine and I will be there to cheer up your emotional ass. Besides as much as I know Tom is very chilled out he will not bother you."
Ā " I don't think so. He has a very cold attitude towards me even now whenever I go back home. "
Ā After you moved to NY you almost begged your parents to move here and stay with you but they were adamant of staying in London so once in a year you used to visit your family and friends during Christmas. The Christmas Dinner was always hosted by the Holland's after your break up you always panicked to go to their house. The first year when you went. The boys, Nikki, Dom welcomed you as if nothing had happened; they hugged you with joy. But when you went to give Tom a hug he just backed off and out of formality gave you a shoulder hug and you got your hint to stay away. He even brought his new girlfriend for the dinner which you thought he did on purpose to make you jealous or hurt you. And you were actually hurt at the thought that he really moved on so quickly. So you avoided family gatherings to prevent such awkward situations.

Even if you want you can have your sweet little revenge by showing off that hot body on the beach and show that asshole what he missed." Z smirked.

Ā You had to finally give in with a deep sigh you said .."okay Z I ll go but if I jump off the cliff after all the mental stress I'm going to get in those 10 days you and Haz will be responsible for it." you laughed.
"Oh we won't want that. Besides you have handled more stressful moments than this you will be fine dramaqueen." Zendaya said.
Ā You talked to Alex about the whole trip to sort out the dates. He was a little sceptical at first about the whole reunion with ex trip , but he believed in you and gave you a nod for the trip. You informed the good news to Haz of your approval to the whole trip. Before you could leave for your unplanned vacation you had to finish recording and shooting for your new upcoming single featuring Breidon Urie.

Ā The song was soon officially released by the music company and the audience loved it and your work was done for the moment and now you could focus on the trip. All of a sudden you were really feeling excited about the whole thing. You and Z were constantly texting each other to plan about the journey.
Ā The day arrived and you met Z at the airport. "So ready for the battle?" she chuckled. You rolled your eyes and laughed "going on a battle would have been much easier compared to this I guess" but in your mind you were confident. Yes you had finally decided that you're ready to face Tom Holland to show him that you have also moved on. And to show him that he'll never find another like you.
Ā The nine hour flight was uneventful as both you and Z slept most of the time which proved that you both were in dire need of a vacation away from your hectic glamorous lives.
Ā It was around 5 āoā clock in the morning in London when your plane landed. Both of you collected your check in luggages. Check out was hassle free as it was early morning with few people around and nobody recognised you as both of you were in your hoodies. As you came out of the exit door you started to look amongst the crowd and finally you saw those familiar icy blue eyes approaching towards you.
Ā āAh!! Finally the star arrivedā Harrison hugged you tight

Ā Harrison chuckled and said with a fake French accent "I m your chauffeur for the day, madame your car awaits at the parking lot."
Ā After you three put all your luggages in the car. Z and you sat at the back seat and Harrison sat on the driver's seat as he started the car. It was an approximate four hour ride to his beach house.
Ā " You know Haz I really missed the summer in London so glad I said yes to your plan."
Ā "The only thing I liked about London when I came for Spiderman:FFH shoot is the Harry Potter museum" Zendaya declared
Ā You noticed Harrison looked a little off today so you asked "you look a little bit stressed out Haz what's the matter bud?"
Ā "How do you read my mind so easily?" Harrison sighed.
Ā "I'm your best friend dumbo now tell me what is the thing that is bothering you so much?" you said with concern in your voice.
Ā "Okay I need to say you something, just don't be mad Tom will be bringing his fiancee too at the beach house. But don't worry everything will be fine I promise."
Ā Your face went expression less as you looked at Harrison then to Zendaya. You were starting to panic from inside. You let out a sigh and rolled your eyes as you leaned on Zendaya's shoulder. She rubbed your shoulder to comfort you as you thought in your mind "what a great start to this cursed trip."

iām liking tfatws, the second episode was veryyy intense imo but WANDAVISION IS SO GOODš i knew it was going to be my favorite from the really old trailer but itās really good and i promise itās not just sitcoms, girl especially cuz youāll have all the episodes already out- we were having to wait every weekš BUT ITS SO GOOD I PROMISE HDJSHDJSH lmao reading this i was like āi- the episodes arenāt an hour longā but i feel that, itās hard for me to watch tfatws bc they are an hour long and iām like š but wandavision episodes are less than 30mins bc I KID YOU NOT they have the damn 10 MINUTE CREDITS DHDJSJ no i donāt think weāve talked about this b4 lol but it all depends on the series for me. i binged love island uk in less than a week bc i was so invested and LITERALLY LOVE IT but uh those episodes are like an hour and a half, but say i was binging tfatws (itās so hard to type that ohmigosh) i honestly would not be able to do it bc of the intensity (you may be like what intensity but if youāve seen episode 2 by the time youāre reading this.......... isaiah and the scene afterwards is all i have to say, esp me being black it was so tough :/)

OMG THE ROMANTIC AND SEXUAL STUFF IS THE BEST PART ABOUT THE SIMS DIDLDKJIkdkj i kind of miss how in the sims 3 they would be making out basically lying on top of each other if they were on a bedā but in sims 4 when theyāre sitting next to each other and everything thatās definitely hot too šš or with hot tubs dkdkdk how one sim climbs on the other simās lap before they woohoo (i used to make them skinny dip in the hot tub and then make out and woohoo so theyāre like naked on top of each other even if you canāt see anything- en e waysss)
Dkdkdkdj so @ Rindfleischet.. blah bla. so itās basically just loads of individual words put together/connected and thatās a really big part of german. so yesterday i had an online EinfĆ¼hrungsveranstaltung for uni (like it was a zoom meeting where they just talked about general stuff about the uni and i was really anxious before, idk why, but it turned out absolutely fine so) and that words consists of the two words EinfĆ¼hrung (introduction) and Veranstaltung (event) which are also two individual words but you can make a new word (EinfĆ¼hrungsveranstaltung, so in english thatās basically āintroduction eventā lmao) by combining those two words. there are obviously some rules like you canāt just combine random words in a random order but you can basically make infinite words (technically). for example (i feel like iām teaching a class just skip this if you donāt care šššdjdjdkdlns)
for example i could say EinfĆ¼hrungsveranstaltungsteilnehmer (which is not underlined with red by tumblr because it is a grammatically correct compound word (i think thatās what theyāre called?)) which is the words introduction + event + participant, so that word just means āparticipant of an introductory eventā but instead itās one word? i hope that makes sense? dkdkkdksks i mean it makes sense in german but idk if it makes sense to you cause idk if iām explaining it very well lmao,

Okay so skdjdjdjddhhddhdhjsk... I used to watch all of my series in German (like H2O) bc obviously they were on german tv so they were german- and i knew that most of these actors i saw on tv were american and i was always SO fascinated that they all learned german for this show??? Like I actually thought they were the peopleās real voices and that these English and American actors were learning german so they could re-record the whole ass show and do everything in german dkdkdldjdjjd... i swear I thought that until I was like 14 omg. Taking the Camden town tube and traveling to north London again. This is North London, where a small street is located, Abbey Road. In front of the Abbey Road thereās Abbey Road Studios endorsing its same name. Itās where the pop music legends, The Beatles, recorded nearly all of their albums. Members of The Beatles, who were in the process of the last recording before disbanding, were worrying a lot about how to proceed with the album title and cover jacket picture. Furthermore the photographer was given only 10 minutes. After being pressed by the time, the photographer went straight out of the studio and took the scene of the members in Abbey Road. It was a normal picture with nothing special in it, however the power of The Beatles was great. The Beatlesā Abbey Road album was a huge success as soon as it came out. With more than 7 million copies sold in 1 year, it started bringing in tourists to Abbey Road. Ones who want to take a picture of them walking down the Abbey Road, just like The Beatles. Until now itās still a dream thatās in the bucket list of so many music fans.
We just listened to The Beatlesā Golden Slumbers. Itās a song that was released in their album Abbey Road. A deep appeal, the voice is really nice. I really like it.
Today we talked about the Abbey Road studio and The Beatles. I also have some memories with Abbey Road Studios. I visited England as SHINee in 2011 and back then we had a chance of performing in Abbey Road Studios. But unfortunately.. My body is that of a healthy strong young man, but why did I only get a serious cold just when I went there.. Suffering from a high fever I remember not being able to finish the performances till the end. I think there were around 5-6 songs, but I was only able to participate in the last song. Back then I had a fever, was in a foreign country and my body was hurting too. Thatās why I just started crying. If Iāll get another chance later on, I wanna visit there and perform again.
