and you're not the first to bring up that mariko doesn't have very accurate self-perception! so now I'm gonna ramble!

part of this depiction is (my) innate imposter syndrome and fear of failure, but kicked to the max. for mariko, failure has Consequences. perhaps even CONSEQUENCES. she got placed on team7 and from then on, if things got fucked up, it wasn't just that the people she cared abt could get hurt or die. it's that she knows there's the potential for calamitous, world-ending type bs if things go too sideways. so she can't afford anything even smacking of arrogance ever.

and the imposter syndrome... part of this is that she's placing herself on a scale w shounen protags lol. scale is fucked. and she has to keep up, while knowing that she's going to get squashed like a bug if she's not vigilant.

the other part is that she's not sakura. she's filling sakura's role in canon, but sees herself as inferior to sakura in terms of ability/potential. she's kind of literally an imposter.

so on the one hand, this all leads to a fairly accurate understanding of how she measures up against certain opponents, bc not having that evaluative ability is the same as being dead lol. but it also means that she's by turns dismissive of lower-level persons/people she can easily out-maneuver (like the confrontation w danzo, she wasn't worried abt her fighting ability against him, and same against sai, even sasori to an extent), and very negative about her skills bc she always knows someone who is better and she's not wrong. those ppl really do exist!! and she's probably going to have to fight them!!

but this also means she's dismissive of how she is herself skilled and formidable. she's always using that scale against herself right? either they were small fry and not worth worrying abt and that's why she could win, or she's the small fry.

idk, I feel like my readers really want mariko to be the best at stuff, but I only gave her one superlative ability - her chakra control. the rest is mariko scrambling to be enough. not the strongest, but strong enough, smart enough, etc. and part of that is, as you note, learning how to apply leverage, bc that's how you topple someone when you're otherwise outclassed. (same thing goes for physical fights - you don't have to be bigger or stronger for something like a joint lock to work, bc those are all abt leverage.)

I personally think it's funny that what mariko admires konan for - keeping up - is the same thing she refuses to recognize as admirable when she does it.

Okay, I have no other outlet for this stuff so I'm gonna put literally everything here ty for being curious u will regret it ♥️

so here's her happy, happy family :D I wanted to give her two younger sisters bc I think of Himiko as the first born. The first sister (who I'm thinking of naming Mariko) is about 13 in the present timeline and the youngest (Chiyo?) is about 8.

Mariko is kinda supposed to be the perfect daughter (in comparison to Himiko). Her mom was already pregnant w her by the time Himiko got her quirk, which had the parents scared that they'd bring another "thing" like Himiko into the world. But once Mariko got her quirk and showed no signs of abnormality, they were 1. relieved and 2. very ready to have another child now that they knew Himiko was just a "fluke"

Okay so to talk about her parents a little, while they are both for sure terrible, I think the few good experiences she had w them were w her mom when she was very young.

The mom has A Lot of Issues. She had a very perfect picture in her head of what she wanted her family to be like and when she first had Himiko she was very happy and would dress her up and do her hair and stuff, but after she got her quirk, she felt a lot of guilt and shame and would subsequently avoid her daughter like the plague.

She would pay a lot of mind to make sure her children looked cute and neat and overtime it became very obvious that she didn't pay that same attention to Himiko at all anymore 😶

(btw, I think Himiko associates the hairstyle her mom would put on her as a toddler with being loved and free which is why she wears it after becoming a villain)

Both the parents are ALL about presentation. They don't care so much about having a nice family so much as looking like a nice family. (All of this ended up creating a whole idea in Himiko's head about appearances).

Mariko, the middle daughter, was very aware of why her parents dissociated from her sister because they never tried to hide the horror they felt towards their first born. Her parents were kind of hard on her to be a normal lovely daughter (not like Himiko). Mari resented Himiko for that a little but also never spoke to her either (partly bc she had been made to feel afraid of her). I imagine if they ever did have any meaningful interaction it probably ended terribly and soured their already estranged relationship.

Mariko actually holds a lot more resentment for Himiko after she becomes a villain bc this ended in the parents uprooting their lives, changing their names, arguing, and generally being much more awful. So, in her head, Himiko is responsible for everything bad that ever happened to her ( SHE'S 13 SHE'LL LEARN EVENTUALLY).

Now Chiyo, the youngest, was never really fully aware of the situation with Himiko. She just knew her parents and sister were very wary of Himiko for some reason? When she was a baby, Chiyo was probably especially distanced from Himiko as they thought she'd hurt her. Chiyo and Mariko probably have a normal sister relationship (Chiyo's annoying, Mari's nagging, they're good).

Once she got a little older though (and her parents became more busy with Mari) Himiko may have helped Chiyo w schoolwork or other things once in a while. So in Chiyo's head Himiko is her Weird but Kinda Nice Eldest Sister.

After everything went down, nobody ever bothered to explain it to Chiyo and refused to answer her many questions so the poor girl is probably currently very confused why they have new names and why her eldest sister vanished and why she's now a "monster" and a "villain". She was only five when it happened.

I imagine her family isn't on Himiko's mind as much as how they made her feel is. She was an alienated daughter and avoided sister and that's kinda what I use to explain some of her behavior in canon (being very clingy and touchy as well as taking on a little sister dynamic w the league as she never learned to be an older one) But she doesn't really think about how they're doing until probably late in canon.

Honestly, I think if she ever reunited with them it would just end up in a lot of blaming and belittling and self righteousness and also apathy 😓

god... i remember reading my broken mariko the manga years ago. i had no idea there was a live adaptation and it's bringing it all back. i appreciate your blog everyday but i'm especially grateful for your my broken mariko posting today ❤️❤️❤️

my girlfriend read the manga today while i watched the movie and we talked about the differences between the two afterwards, the movie seems to be a pretty faithful adaptation of the events of the manga but it seems to have a few differences in tone (i think mariko is a bit more lonely in the manga, for example). i'm looking forward to reading it someday. either way i really recommend the movie i thought it was great

Sounds better!"The mutant bunny exclaimed while he wrote down in his small pocket notebook "Today seems to be a very special day because my parents are more than happy, I think it's because I just turned 7 years old and I think they want us to go for a walk because I saw my dad Usagi pack a lot of our things "Wrote Jotaro, while he continued writing with emotion, his rabbit-yokai father was on the phone while ordering some bags

"Yes, understood,shinpai suru na/Don't worry, we have all the essentials, it will be the first festival he will attend and I know he will be happy to see you... Yes, ok, send my regards to Tomoe-San and Gennosuke-Kun I will be delighted to see you again…sayonara” the Samurai rabbit said goodbye in the most polite way possible

After his call Usagi set out to see his dear husband Leonardo, a turtle in his 40s, current leader of the Hamato Clan,but upon entering the room, he was blinded by a beautiful scene, which he had to immortalize with a cell phone video (a very old one for someone who has lived in New York since 2023)

"Who is the most beautiful baby-conejito in the whole multiverse~? It's you!!" Leo shouted as he carried Jotaro in his arms and tickled him

"Dad! Stop! I'm already a big boy!" Exclaimed Jotaro I laughed

"But why is it so bad? Look, they already answered and they seem happy with this" He showed his cell phone and to Leo's horror they all wrote at the same time

"Finish your self-defense lessons first, and then we'll move on to the wooden sword."

"Don't even tell me, he asked me to please take a video of his inventions, with his trademark" He said, showing a message from Donnie asking him that no one could profit from his inventions

"Dads! Come on! I want to start with my birthday!" Jotaro exclaimed, jumping like an excited rabbit.

"Calm down Jotaro, the festival is not going anywhere first we have to go leave our things with some friends of mine"

"Does Tomoe know we came?"

"Of course, we have to hurry to make the most of the day" Usagi said, taking Jotaro by the hand "Besides, Mari-san must be waiting with them"

"Mari-san?" asked Jotaro confused"

"So we say to Mariko, your mother"

Those last words were like the blade of a katana grazing Leonardo's neck. Even though Jotaro had both his and Usagi's DNA, thanks to Draxum and his abilities to create through mutagen, he was also the son of Mariko, ex-girlfriend and best friend of his husband Usagi, since they needed the DNA of a female turtle-mutant or rabbit-yokai when they wanted to have a baby., and as much as they wanted Jennika's, she was not the one, since she had previously been human and her mutant DNA was the same as Leonardo’s,So the only option was Mariko-san, who willingly and unconditionally agreed, since she was doing it for her childhood friend after all.

Leo proceeded to take his son's other hand and the three of them went together to the temple.

"This place is very nice!!" Exclaimed Jotaro

"I know, it's strange no longer hearing the everyday noises of the city"

"Well, at least it looks like the fights are multiversal" Leo said as he pointed to two Yokais fighting in a food stall.

"Hey! I asked you for a kilogram of apples!! Are you an idiot or what?!! Exclaimed a rather large Yokai-pig

"I-I'm so sorry sir, the scale failed and I'm using another method to weigh the food" stuttered the salesman yokai-marmot

"Well hurry up!!, what kind of place is this?!

"And I thought that Meatsweats was selective" Leo said with a slightly mocking tone "I'll take care of it"

"It's fine, but no threatening with weapons" Usagi told him

"What is dad going to do?" asked Jotaro

"He will only speak kindly to those gentlemen, don't worry”

"Is there a problem gentlemen?" Leo asked in a neutral voice.

"It's none of your business, Kappa!" exclaimed the pig

"The gentleman does his best to provide you with a service, you shouldn't pressure him like that...!" Before he knew it, the pig pushed him with both hands

"So you'd rather have that shell pressed on you?!" He yelled angrily as a crowd began to surround them.

"...I'd like to see you try..." Leo replied with a mischievous smile.

Without thinking, the Yokai-pig rushed towards him without knowing what awaited him. Leo began to dodge him with the martial arts of his clan, the pig could not give him a single blow and term falling to the ground because of how exhausted he was

"No one likes bullies like you" Leo said triumphantly.

"Be... a real man and fight for real!!" The pig yelled as he tried to get up.

"...If that's what you want" Said the turtle grabbing his katanas and just seeing their shine was enough for the Yokai-pig to run away from the place, screeching as only pigs know how to do"Uh, I thought it would be a duel to the death with knives" He said with a mischievous smile, returning his weapons to their place.

"Thank you very much, that bully is always around these parts and takes advantage of the smaller vendors" The little yokai vendor explained

"You don't have to worry anymore" Leo said as he looked for something in his bag "Here, this should fix the scale" he said as he handed him some special screws, patented by Donnie of course

"Arigato Kappa!!" He exclaimed the groundhog giving a slight bow

Leo bowed and left with his husband and son "Shall we go?" He asked him, taking Usagi's hand.

"You were amazing" Usagi said

"What can I say? I'm an expert in attracting attention" Leo replied waving the tail of his mask which hair was

"That was awesome Dad!!" Jotaro shouted "He went Ahhh !! And you dodged him with a Fiumm !! And then he ran away doing Oink!" Jotaro narrated while he laughed

"Remember Jotaro, your father used self defense before his weapons"

"I know, I know, I'll practice my defense more" The little hybrid replied

"Very well, now let's go to the temple"

And without further ado, the family held hands going to their destination, hoping not to have any more setbacks.

i love your itachi! itachi characterization always seem to be butchered but you have it like perfect like yes itachi would believe he’s still clan head when he kinslayed the entire clan. the basically verbal side eye when he calls sasuke ‘attached’ to mariko. chefs kiss

thank you so much 😭😭😭 i'm so glad bc he's so hard to write. also i hate him lol ❤️ as i've mentioned previously on here, he's not my preferred brand of freak, too lacking in self-awareness. but i really wanted to do him justice regardless, so i'm super super glad it comes through

(and the funny thing w him maneuvering things so that mariko has the sharingan--which i haven't explicitly said--is that his take is that he's essentially making mariko property of the uchiha clan. sasuke sees it as her belonging to his family, and itachi sees it as her belonging to sasuke, in a directly proprietary sense. i see it as a throwback to more warring clans era view on clans and bloodlines.

to itachi, if he has to put up w mariko's existence, then the least he can do is try and secure her to sasuke in every way possible, whether the two of them recognize it as such or not. he's not doing her a service, not changing his mind or opinion on her, he's just making her useful.)
