So a mutual put this on my dash, but I wanted to reblog this version to argue a few things here. Character design is very important, but if anyone actually bases their like/dislike of a character solely on that... That's just kind of dumb. I don't like Syrus, but it's certainly not because of how he looks.

We really need to start putting more words on shelves. Relationships can be bad without them needing to be "toxic" or "abusive". Like yeah, I don't think Syrus was a good friend to Jaden at all, but it's not really that deep. He just sucks. (That's my opinion, you can disagree with it, but it's not changing.)

I don't think it's accurate to say that people put Syrus on a pedestal, because no one was doing that. They certainly did with Jaden, but as for every other character? No one expected great things out of Syrus or acted like he could do no wrong/was some kind of savior. People sure thought highly of Zane because he was actually a great duelist, and yeah, it might suck to be related to someone more successful and feel like you'll never live up to them, but I can't think of a single person who pressured Syrus to try and live up to his brother's legacy other than Syrus.

As far as why I don't like Syrus... Listen. I did like him at one point in time, when I was a kid in middle school and had barely any knowledge of him outside of the handful of GX episodes I caught on tv and fanfiction. When I fully rewatched GX as an adult, I went into it with the expectation that I would like Syrus because I remembered him being written nicely in stories I couldn't remember, but that expectation quickly died. His greatest sin is simply being annoying, and I can safely say that there's no secondhand embarrassment on my part that comes with watching him. He just gets on my nerves for more than one reason.

As far as loyalty... Syrus is about the least loyal person in Jaden's friend group. The very first example is him leaving the red dorm the second he gets the chance to. It wasn't too long ago that Jaden had the same opportunity he did to advance to Ra Yellow, but he stayed in the end because red was where he belonged. You'd think that a loyal friend would at least consider doing the same, but Syrus didn't even hesitate or seem to remember how Jaden had turned down the chance to move up to stay with his friends. First chance he got, he left.

Of course, Syrus did still stick around as a friend, so him moving dorms didn't change much in the end as far as friend dynamics were concerned, and sure, if his goal is to be more like Zane, it'd make sense that he'd want to get to blue dorm eventually. I just think it's very telling how there was never a moment where he thought "What about Jaden?" before accepting the promotion. Even if he's got his reasons, you'd think that someone who considers himself the protagonist's best friend might think about him just a little before committing to Ra Yellow.

This kind of ties in to those comments about how "Syrus cowers in danger", which is a normal response to have, if you're not very brave, and he's definitely not. Those situations started to rub me the wrong way after enough times of watching Syrus continually doubt Jaden in every dangerous situation they found themselves in. I think it's kind of sad when new characters enter the show, become Jaden's friend, and have more faith in him than one of the characters who's been there from the beginning. He never believes in Jaden, he never has the slightest bit of faith in him despite seeing his abilities for himself time and time again, and every time there's a high stakes duel with our beloved protagonist taking place, Syrus is always standing on the sidelines fearing the worst and expecting Jaden to fail. This does not ever change throughout the course of the show, and it really just drives home how accurate that curse mark he received in season 3 was. His defining character trait isn't loyalty, it's doubt.

And for the aniki thing- Jaden never liked that. He was shown to be uncomfortable with Syrus calling him that because he didn't want to be an older brother figure for this guy, he wanted them to be equals. Syrus just didn't listen to him when Jaden said not to call him that, so he ended up letting it slide. It's not exactly a measure of how devoted he is to Jaden, just how eager he is to shove his brother problems onto the first guy that shows him kindness.

I know this is getting really long at this point, so I'll try to wrap it up: Syrus was never a good friend to Jaden. He used him as an emotional crutch for the whole show, leaned on him because he couldn't handle his issues on his own, and never gave anything in return for all the support he received from his best friend. Even as far into the show as season 4, when Jaden was struggling really hard with his depression over the events of season 3, Syrus (and everyone else) essentially ignored him unless they needed Jaden around to solve their problems for him. We never once saw Syrus try to reach out for Jaden or check in on how he was doing, arguably at the time in his life where Jaden needed his friends the most, but what we did see was Jaden still going out of his way to help Syrus. That episode where Syrus had to duel that guy who wanted to challenge Zane? Jaden brought him food to cheer him up. He was going through a hard time, and he still put in the effort to support his friends, and at the end of the day, what I really hate about Syrus is that all the effort Jaden put into being his friend was never returned by him.

Syrus isn’t a bad character, you’re just mean.

The way some gx fans just completely write off Syrus pisses me off more than it should, because you know they wouldn't be doing that if he was a little bit taller and a little bit more attractive. I have legitimately seen people argue that Syrus is an abusive, toxic asshole to everyone when most of the people around him are abusive toxic assholes to HIM. Syrus is just a little guy who was put on a pedestal because his brother managed to be an amazing duelist and all that people see in him is “Zane’s little brother”, completely writing him off and not seeing him as a person beyond that.

Syrus's entire struggle is that he'll never live up to his brother or be a great duelist, or even manage to play the card game he's going to school to study for, and he overcomes that as the seasons go by (ESPECIALLY season 4). Syrus starts off as incredibly cowardly, shy, clingy, and easy bait for stronger students, but he breaks free from that shell as the episodes go by.

I've legitimately seen people justify Tyranno and Chazz's bullying of him because he "deserves it for being a coward", when all he has done is be mildly annoying or a hormone-enraged teenager, as if those things are inherently horrible acts that require Syrus to pay for his sins.

Syrus is by far the most realistically written GX character and I personally believe that people do not like him because Syrus exhibits behaviors that they've done that they're embarrassed to death about. I've seen people get mad because "Syrus cowers in fear whenever there's danger" AS IF THAT ISN'T A NORMAL REACTION???

Syrus watched his teacher's soul get stolen and watched Zane have a heart attack and die right in front of him, give this poor boy a break and spare him of your massive hateboner.

Yes, it is wrong of Syrus to project his insecurities onto Jaden, but in NO way is he a bad friend or quote unquote “abusive”. He was ride or die, absolutely loyal to Jaden, why else do you think in the original japanese sub he called him "Aniki"? Because he cared. Jaden was like a big brother to him, and I hate that the fandom writes that off and claims he was horrible to one of his best friends. People hate Syrus for no reason much to the point people will literally pull shit out of their asses to Argue Syrus is a bad character, and I think thats very unfair.

After yugi and seto get together how long does it take for jaden to start calling seto otosan

How does seto react the first time

It’s probably a year into the relationship. He starts out as Mr. Kaiba but once Yugi tells him they are dating he just sticks to Seto.

From the beginning of the relationship Seto is very clear. He’s dating Yugi because he likes (loves) him and has felt this way for a while. Jaden’s adoption just slapped him in the face with his feelings. He’s very aware that Yugi and Jaden are now a package deal. He honestly wouldn’t have it any other way. Jaden is a great kid. He reminds Seto a lot of Mokuba before all the trauma came into their lives. He wants Jaden to have the best life. He wants to help Yugi give him that.

So from the beginning of their relationship Seto and Yugi were on the same page when it came to Jaden. The kid always came first. Their relationship was second. It’s just the way having kids is, you put them first.

Kaiba never had a good relationship with his adoptive father, doesn’t remember his dad all that well but he knows what not to do. And in the beginning of their relationship he’s very respectful of Yugi’s boundaries with Jaden. Seto isn’t his father (yet)

But as the relationship progressive and Seto starts to take on more responsibilities with Jaden and gets to start being a father to the boy. (Once him and Yugi realize this is going to last)

Yugi leaves Jaden with Setonin his office. Gramps is visiting Arther and Joey is away. Atem is working and Yugi has a meeting. Seto doesn’t care about any of those factors except that Yugi is trusting him to watch Jaden. (Not something new but still special)

The boy is probably 6ish now. He’s hanging out in Seto’s office. The little one probably organizing cards or drawling (he created the Neospacians at age 3/4 I think he likes drawling and could be a great card designer. Mainly because spirits just come to him and he draws what he sees but that’s a head cannon for later)

But it’s just a calm day. They’ve done this before. They will do it again. Seto is doing paper work and Jaden is just talking his ear off about his cards/drawling/school anything that pops into his little head is leaving his mouth. Including.

“Hey Oto-san do you think I should made the wings blue or purple?”

Seto freezes. Jaden doesn’t call Yugi that. And no one else is in the room. He slowly raises his head to look at Jaden. The little boy is looking at him with his head tilted just waiting for a response.

“Uuhh Blue.” Seto never stumbles over his words and hasn’t said uhhh since he was nine.

Jaden just smiles brightly at his “you always pick blue Oto-san.” And then the kid is right back to coloring. Having no clue that he just made a geniuses brain stop working.

Seto sits there for a bit just staring at the kid. Yugi’s kid just called him Oto-san. Yugi’s kid…. Was Yugi okay with that? Did Yugi know? Was Seto okay with it?… Seto never wanted the kid to call him anything else.

He left work and came to sit with Jaden and see what he was drawling. A dragon, because the kid was after his heart today.

When Yugi came back to pick Jaden up and head home, Seto doesn’t know how to bring the topic up. He doesn’t want Jaden to feel like he did something wrong. Nor does he want to risk Yugi freaking out in front of the kid if he’s not okay with it.

They have a date night planned the next evening any way.

The next 24 hours are torture as Seto thinks through the whole relationship. He can’t lose them. Either of them. He wants Yugi and Jaden to always be in his life. He wants….oh. That’s what he’s going to do.

Their date arrives and Yugi is looking at him weird. “Are you okay? You were acting really weird yesterday and you haven’t texted me all day? Is something wrong?” Yugi never lets him hide or beat around a bush. Yugi always drags their problems into the light and makes them deal with it.

“Jaden called me Oto-san yesterday.” Not how he was planning to tell him but it’s out there now.

“Oh really? Sorry about that. He’s started doing it at home and I’ve been meaning to talk to you about it. I wasn’t sure how you’d feel about it.” Yugi already knew. Jaden had been doing this for a while.

Seto is flabbergasted. “How do you feel about it?” Yugi hadn’t said how he felt.

Yugi just shrugged. “I would have stopped him if it bothered me. The real question is how do you feel? We haven’t been together that long and it’s a big thing. I’ll tell him to stop if you don’t want him to call you that. Sorry I should have told you as soon as he started.”

“Don’t apologize.” Seto didn’t mean to say it so sharply, but Yugi was rambling and Seto’s world was tilting and he had to say something before he spun out. Yugi had snapped to attention as soon as he spoke and it’s now or never. “I love it.” Yugi seemed to relax and send him that warm smile he always did whenever he was truly happy.

Seto swallowed. He has to do it now. “I don’t ever want him to stop calling me that.”

Yugi laughed and shook his head. “I don’t think you have to worry about that.” But Seto was worried about that.

“I never want to lose this.” He says reaching out to grab Yugi’s hand. “To lose you. Either of you.” He slides a box out of his pocket and hold Yugi’s hand tight. “I want to marry you.”

Yugi has that soft look on his face again. “I want to marry you to.”

Despite his words he was not read for Seto to slide out of his seat and kneel in front of him with a ring box in hand. “No I want to marry you right now.”

“Oh.” Yugi says as he takes in the ring and the words. “Yes.” Then the words actually kick in as he looks at Seto in shock. “Right now?”

“If you want. Yes right now.”

“We have so many phone calls to make. Jaden had to be there and Mokuba, Atem and the others will never forgive us if they aren’t there.” Yugi’s brain is firing on all cylinders trying to figure out what they need to do.

“I already texted Mokuba.” Seto had the text ready to go and had sent it as soon as Yugi said yes. “He’ll get everyone. So are you ready?”

Yugi smiled. “Ya let’s get married.”

Honestly it was an easy decision and a long time coming to anyone who had watch the two in their relationship.

Eventually, Bastion does return from the other dimension with Tania. Everyone is happy to see him. No one ever forgot him.

Aster carries Echo's memory with him until the day he dies. Just like his father, he'll always remember the poor girl who was murdered for a card. The girl he couldn’t save.

Crowler's the teacher everybody added on Facebook and all that after graduation because they're not his students anymore so they're allowed to be friends with him on social media 🤭

Syrus really does love his brother a lot, bit therapy really opens his eyes to how so many of his personal issues and fears and anxieties and inhibitions stem from Zane and how badly he treated him and how badly it stifled him as a person and is able to bring himself to hold Zane accountable for it all so he can actually find a way to heal from it all and they can truly mend their relationship.

Jaden regrets not holding Zane accountable for how he treated Syrus past their duel in episode 8 where the subsequently drops the issue because of Zane's dueling skills.

While working on Chazz's experiences list Atticus and Alexis took him to the mall. She left them unsupervised for a few minutes to go to the bathroom. When she came back, they were gone, and when she found them again, Chazz had his ears pierced. Atticus had taken him to Claire's. She will never leave them unsupervised again. 🤦‍♀️

The Lemon Legacy: Generation 1, Chapter 129 - Dropping Off

It's been a hard couple of days. Gemma keeps asking to see Jaden and they know it's wrong to lie, but they're just not ready to break her heart. They tried calling CPS to see if anything could be done, but Calvin isn't starving Jaden so they won't do anything.

That night, they're stirred from their slumber by incessant knocking.

Ophelia: What the hell? They'd better not wake the girls up.

The last time they got late night visitors, it was Greta and Jace running away from their dad's house, but that's probably not the case now.

The second Xander sees who it is, he doesn't hold back.

Xander: Are you out of your woohoocking mind? You treated us like child predators, took our daughter's best friend from her and now you're bugging us at two in the morning?

Calvin stand there and… takes it.

Anna can barely hear her husband being berated. She's cried for hours and hours, dried tears trailing down her face. Now she's just… numb.

She stares out into the horizon, just like she had days ago. She tries to remember every detail of the scenery. Anything to stop thinking.

Calvin waits for Xander to take a breath before speaking.

Calvin: Xander, I have no right to come to you to ask for anything, after everything I said. I will get on my hands and knees and beg if I have to, but I'm not asking for me. I'm asking for Jaden. Please… hear me out.

Xander crosses his arms.

Xander: Fine. For Jaden.

After checking that the girls were still asleep, Ophelia finally joins them.

Calvin: Something's happened. We need you to keep Jaden while we're gone. Please. I-I was wrong.

It sounds like it pains him to admit that.

Calvin: I'm nowhere near the man I thought I was. I was arrogant, foolishly so. I'm no better than you. I'm far, far worse.

As much as it pleases both of them to hear this, it's also a tad concerning. Where was this coming from? Why did it involve keeping Jaden for the night?

Calvin: We have to go out of town for a bit and Jaden can't come with us. I know after what I did, what I said, I'm asking far too much of you, but please just… please do it for Jaden.

Anna's composure cracks and she begins to weep once again.

Ophelia goes over to Anna and an oblivious Jaden.

Ophelia: Anna, what is going on? Did someone in your family die? What's the emergency?

Anna tries to say something but only gut-wrenching sobs come out. Whatever is is, it must be devastating.

Anna: I always thought I was so much better than you. I was more proper, more modest, more Watcherly. A lot of good all that did me… I'm sorry for everything, Ophelia. We don't deserve your forgiveness, but please watch Jaden for us… Please.

Ophelia glances back at her husband. He can tell they're in agreement.

Xander: We'll watch him. Jaden's always welcome here. But you can't pull any high and mighty llamashit again. You're not going to break my baby girl's heart.

Calvin: I can assure you I won't.

Jaden squeals as his dad lifts him up.

Calvin: There's my boy. You be good for the Lemons, alright? They're good people. Better than your old man.

He pulls his son in close.

Calvin: I love you. I really do. I'm sorry I never showed it.

Jaden melts into the embrace.

While Calvin cradles his son close, Anna can't help but feel resentful. He chooses NOW to finally show he gives a damn about their son? Guess there's no time like the present.

She's felt a lot of resentment toward Calvin the past few days and she has no plans of stopping.

That anger melts when Calvin hands Jaden over to her.

Anna: Oh, my sweet boy. Mommy's going to miss you so so much.

She peppers his cheeks with kisses and revels in his laughter. She tries to perfect this moment to memory.

Anna: Daddy and I have to go, but you'll have a lot of fun with Gemma and her family.

Jaden: Where are you goin'?

Anna: That's not important. Just know that we love you… And we're sorry.

Calvin listens in. Anna really does try to be a good mother. He shouldn't have taken her for granted, or Jaden.

There's a lot of things he regrets, but there's no going back now. He'll fix the mess he made.

Jaden: Thanks for lettin' me come play with Gemma again!

Fresh tears fall down Anna's cheeks but she keeps on a brave face.

Anna: You are so welcome, baby. You and Gemma's family are going to have a great time together. I love you, Jaden Taylor. More than you'll ever know.

Jaden watches his parents walk off. He waves but they don't look back.

Ophelia comes to get him once they're out of sight.

Ophelia: Phew, it's chilly out here. Come on, sweetie, let's get you inside.

As Xander pulls out the sleeping bag, Ophelia brings Jaden into Gemma's room. She was trying not to wake her up, but Gemma's a light sleeper, so that was pointless. Gemma begins to stir, blinking sleepily until she sees who's in her mother's arms.

Gemma: Jaden!!

She doesn't care why he's here in the middle of the night, she's just happy to see her best friend. The two squeeze each other tight.

This was a weird night, but it was worth it to see the looks on their faces.

The cases at SVU were always tough. They were especially tough when they involved kids though.

The sexual assault case you had been working had turned into breaking up a brothel, to taking down a make shift boarder house. Pimps, enforcers, girls, their kids, all living under one roof like some messed up version of the Brady Bunch.

Now that everyone was booked, all that was left to wait for the deals to be made and Child Services to show up and take the kids. One in particular.

“Are you ever gonna put him down?” Fin asked as he came into the break room to see you still holding one of the babies in your arms.

“Every time I try, he cries.” Not just cried, wailed, the second he hit his carrier.

“Just let ‘em cry then. Builds character. See ya gotta Ferberize kids these days. Let them cry it out and they’ll tell you when they’re ready to be picked up.” You arch a sharp brow at Fin who smirked. “Ken and Alejandro might have mentioned it with Jaden.” You give a very profound ‘ah’ as that made a lot more sense than Fin knowing what Ferberizing meant.

The door to the break room opened and a very haggard looking Carisi walked in. Straight past you and Fin to the coffee maker. “This thing got anything left in it? Cause I sure as hell don’t.”

“Probably 1 left from this morning. I was gonna go on a run here in a minute before paper work. You want one?”

“You’re a saint among plebs my friend.” Carisi replied to Fin’s kind offer. Choking down what little coffee was left in the pot, which you have to assume is just fond memories of coffee and grounds at this point, as he left. Leaving you two alone.

“You look tired babe.”

Carisi nodded. Seeming to let his shoulders sink for the first time the whole day. “6 hours watching Liv grill that moron, who’s too stupid to realize all the rats had jumped ship and left the captain to sink on the Titanic. We got enough of girls and his crew to agree to testify. But he still wants to go to trial.”

“Some people just can’t see the train. Even when it’s comin’ at ‘em.” You tell him, as you start to bounce the baby a little more.

The blonde looked at you a little wistfully. Just staring for a moment before he said, “you look good like that.” Before you could ask what he meant or make some smart retort, he already answered, “holding a baby like that.”

You smile back a little at him. “I think I just look like his mom.”

“Nah. It’s not that. Your good with ‘em.” He disagreed. “Your gonna make a great mom someday.”

Sonny’s oh-so-subtle way of once again letting you know he wanted a family. It was no big secret. He’d all but said that he wanted 4 or 5 kids on your first real date, and it wasn’t like he’d kept his plans for a large family hidden before then. You knew Sonny would make a great father. And you would love to have kids with him. With your work, however, when were you supposed to find the time to have a family?

Plus, you knew Sonny. He would insist on being married before having kids, and a New York wedding took at least a year to plan.

“Well, I like these kids right now. Because these I can give back.” You move baby boy Doe to try and make a point, and the wailing almost immediately starts before you let him latch back on. “In theory.”

Carisi snickered. “I take it your staying until CPS gets here?” You shrug. Not like you had a choice. “I’ll stick around then.”

“No, no. Go home.” You insist. “You gotta be tired. I’ll be home soon.”

“Eh. Fin’s comin’ back with my coffee. I gotta stick around for that anyway.” You smile up at Carisi as he came over to stroke the baby’s cheek with his finger. Making you wistful yourself, and embarrassingly weak in the knees. “You do look good like that though.”

Since Chazz and Jaden are childhood friends in the Seto adopts Jaden-verse, does this mean that Chazz never leaves the Academy for North Academy?

That's a good question.

Answer is yes Chazz still leaves for North Academy.

Lemme explain, Chazz has friends that he cares for more than anything but from even before meeting them he's been under a lot of pressure to succeed by his brothers. They used his friendship to Jaden as an attempt to get close to the Kaiba fortune.

And once Seto put a stop to their plans, they became vengeful. They stopped wanting to appease the man but to outdo him, to make the Princeton name shine brighter than the Kaiba name ever had.

And what, does Seto Kaiba pride himself on above everything and marks him as the man he is today, dualing. And who is his successor, Jaden. Both things that Chazz cares for, the things his brothers use against him. Taunt him over, threaten to disown him and leave him with nothing.

Chazz loses to Jaden in a friendly match, false rivalry of course but somehow they find out. They know everytime he's lost to Jaden in the past and present, to his friends and say the only reason he got into Obelisk is because of their money, not his grades not his skills.

And Chazz starts to believe them.

He gets in his own head, his grades start to slip. And all his friends are worried about him, and while all Chazz wants to do is run to them and apologise and tell them his struggles... He can't, he's afraid.

His fear over his brothers and their expectations wins out, by the time they confront him with an intervention Chazz's nerves are frayed and his fear comes out in his temper.

Chazz pushes this friends away, ignoring the regret and desire to run back and apologise instead taking off by boat in shame but ending up in a storm sending him to North Academy.

When he returns, his brothers get to him before his friends have the chance... But someone's there to intervene.

"Speak to him like that one time, I dare you" said Seto Kaiba himself standing before Chazz. His eyes sharp and his tone not one to argue against. "We can speak to our brother as we wish... Mr Kaiba" said Brother 1 (they don't deserve to be addressed by name and I can't be bothered looking it up).

Seto folded his arms "I think you'll find as founder of this school, I have the authority to do as I wish to those on my grounds and as this concerns one of my students and I don't tolerate such behaviour against them...I can. Also neither of you have a visitors badge or were booked for a visit so my security will escoet you out. And take your camera crew with you, my lawyers will be with you shortly. " He replied, a small smirk as Joey and Tristan grinned and threw the brothers out.

Seto than turned to Chazz who was hugging himself and softened, putting a gentle hand on his shoulder. "You're welcome to go sit in my personal office while I sort this out. Joey will go with you, tell him when your ready for visitors." He said, silently cursing that he hadn't seen this sooner. His heart broke at Chazz's expression, who gave a thankful nod.

"Are they... Mad? And what about the dual..?", He asked, sounding ever so small. Seto shook his head "concerned, confused and relieved more than anything else not mad, we will talk but that's for later. The dual is off, you're in no state for that. I'm sure Jaden will agree to dual you at another time. Go, we'll send you something to eat soon enough." Said Seto, watching him leave.

When Chazz saw the others, he couldn't help the tears. All the fear, the anger, the regret bubbling to the surface and the first thing they did was give him a big hug. "You big dummy..." Said Bastion with a fond smile. "Honestly , next time at least pack a coat or something" Said Alexis, Jaden chuckled "I'll say, you're freezing but we bought hot chocolate, right uncle Joey?" Joey grinned, bringing forth a tray "you know it kid, uncle Joey's famous hot chocolate is right here."

There were explanations to be had, but for now Chazz relished in the warmth of being home.

Dear anon, I love you for asking this of me, but I have to wonder if you want everyone who follows me to start hating me.

Long post coming up? You know it. I apologise to all Johan fans, he's great and I loved him and his deck as a child. Now I'm just salty because he's too perfect. Warning because this is a mess of unrequited feelings and it's an all around bad time if you ship anything in gx. I did mention I do not practice self care in a previous post of mine. Enjoy your pain c:

So here are my bad takes of the day, under the very handy cut!

You see, gx rivalshipping becomes a lot more complicated and angsty when the transfer students arrive. The dynamic changes. If there is a dynamic at all. I mean, imagine yourself in Manjoume's shoes. You've lowkey had a crush on this dumb guy who kind of ruined your life (but actually improved it and freed you from the restraints your family imposed on you), just to watch a handsome scandinavian dude who is a lot more muscular than you are and maybe a little bit nicer, maybe just waltz in and completely captivate said dumb guy's attention. Just when you had managed to admit your own feelings to yourself.

Johan comes in and steals the room, everybody loves him, he's good looking, charismatic, kind and has a magical exclusive shiny sparkling deck at his disposal that he uses as if it was the most natural thing in the world, like he hadn't received approval Pegasus himself on top of the duel spirits. And Judai clearly can't get enough of it, because he's always seeking him out, ever since the duel they had in front of everyone, and Manjoume finds that he's really annoyed by it. He wishes he'd been chosen for the demonstration, deluding himself into believing that if he'd won, Judai would have never started caring so damn much about Johan. But a part of him knows he would have probably lost and that even if he hadn't, Judai would have not cared about the outcome at all. It's nice to think that winning a card game can solve all your problems, but, while Manjoume has only ever experienced how much losing one can mess with your life goals, he isn't stupid enough to think that winning would grant him happiness. Not anymore. No well-thought-out strategy can rid him of his bad temper and his worthless pride.

The thing is, he can't really hate Johan, because nobody can hate Johan. He's just the perfect picture of everything Manjoume isn't and, going by everyone's reaction, the fact that 'everyone is unique in their own way and worthy of love' is absolute bullshit. There clearly is an objective better one of the two and Manjoume is very aware that he isn't it. And he'd probably begrundgingly be cool with it, after all he'd accepted that Jaden was braver than him, that Asuka was emotionally stronger and more resolute, that Daichi was smarter, not to mention how much plain better than him his fomer upperclassmen were. Forget about pros like Edo, whom Judai had stood on equal grounds with. But Judai is clearly playing favourites, too, hell, he hardly even acknowledges Manjoume.

He finds himself forcibly removed from his already shaky position as rival, because now Johan is there to take it up, on top of the titles of 'best friend' and 'emotional support and crutch' and 'maybe something else I'd really rather not know'.

Manjoume just generally hates it all. He might have changed and improved himself, but there is no saving him from the fact that some people were just better. That doesn't stop him from trying. But again he finds himself pitted against Judai, the irony of his fate never giving him a moment to rest. Manipulated and turned into the enemy of those he cares about, again.

A part of him despises how good it feels to learn that Johan has gone missing, but Judai is screaming like his arms have been torn off and while he hates that it's all for Johan, he hates that Judai is in pain even more. Judai had saved him before and it's only right for him to return the favour. So he insists on helping him on his stupidly risky plan to save Johan. And it's all to get the old Judai back.

...The rest, from Manjoume's perspective is a mess. His feelings of anger stem from the hatred he harbours towards himself and the bond between Judai and Johan. He'd been trying to help, he had, he sincerely had, but everything just swirled together and the next thing he knows is that he is shouting at Judai because it suddenly made sense to guilt trip him over the fact that he'd abandoned his friends, he'd abandoned him as soon as someone better had come into the picture. And it was Judai's fault for letting them- him believe that he cared when he didn't, when he couldn't have cared less, because clearly he had one priority only and that was Johan. They had come to help and it still wasn't being appreciated.

Disappearing is a relief, for a moment, but then he finds himself in another hellish place and he can't help but think that it's retribution for being so upset over something that has nothing to do with him. That's right. It's his own fault for making Judai, his only real friend (aside from Fubuki, sorry for breaking the immersion, but I love Fubuki), carry the burden of the stupid hopes that came with his feelings. Judai has no fault. Johan has no fault. It's his own for desiring something that would always be out of reach.

As he is tortured by his own thoughts and regrets in the other dimension, Manjoume silently wishes his words meant nothing to Judai, that he'd be spared the pain of betrayal. He wishes Judai can achieve his goal.

When Shou appears to him, he knows there is no time to waste. If he is alive, the others are, too. Judai would want to know that they are safe. So he asks Shou to carry his message, along with his good luck wish. He hopes it's enough to make up for his mistakes.

Next thing he knows, they are back at DA, Judai is nowhere to be seen. Manjoume mourns the loss of his first and only friend and curses himself for tarnishing that memory. (Judai's return and season 4 would be too much to cover, this was only Manjoume's pov and I might as well just rewrite the entire show at this point.)

So what about Judai?

I personally want to believe that he genuinely does like Manjoume at some point. But as much as it pains me to admit it, season 3 just wrote Manjoume off from the list of main characters and relegated him to 'he's your funny comic relief, nobody really gives a shit about what he thinks or feels, so why should you, the spectator who has grown to love him, care at all? Also here's his sticker that confirms that Judai going after Johan makes him really angry for some reason, make of that what you will c:' (fuck the writing staff, I'm not even sorry).

Judai is so clearly smitten with Johan. It seems to me that his refusal to accept Manjoume's help that one time on the cliff shows that Judai doesn't really understand the way Jun operates. He probably labeled him as just someone else who counted on him to be saved. And sure, Manjoume is saved by Judai in multiple occasions, but he doesn't ever really... ask for it? Or more importantly expect it. He doesn't get himself into situations he can't handle because Judai can save him anyways, the trouble just kind of happens at him and more often than not he's only involved by accident, because he happens to be close to Judai.

The problem still stands, as season 3 starts, Judai is very much burdened by everyone's expectations and Johan is a breath of fresh air and the only one Judai actually considers a friend and an equal. It's heartbreaking that he felt that alone.

They get their gay 'have we met somewhere before moment', they duel gaily, they homoerotically tell eachother how admirable the other is, they shamelessly flirt and whoohoo Judai has an unofficial boyfriend and who can blame him for concentrating on him along with wanting to escape the pressure his former gang unknowingly laid on him.

But yeah, Judai in season 3 has a one track mind and it's hard not to see it as romantic. Does he know it is? Maybe? I honestly don't know. I feel like Johan is the one of the two who is aware of the implications of their interactions. Which also kind of brings me to say... does Johan think that all of Judai's friends are horrible people? Because he never once comments on how Judai distances himself from them once he arrives. He probably thinks they were never good friends in the first place.

Judai probably excuses his attentions towards Johan with the fact that they are alike because they can see spirits, but then he rememebers that so can Manjoume and maybe he feels guilty for a second, but Johan cracks a joke and Judai laughs and thinks to himself that Manjoume is probably happy to have the peace and quiet he so often claimed to want.

Like... I think a part of him would get that tightness in his chest because it's like he's betrayed someone, but he knows he hasn't, because there isn't any actual mutual agreement he's going against. So he lets himself fall deeper into the comfort of Johan's presence. Johan is, to Judai, the ideal person. He is exactly who Judai wants to become. Judai admires him very deeply and strives to be more like him, but he falls gradually into despair as he learns, once Johan is gone, that no, he can't be like him, because Johan is so much better than him, and if he doesn't get him back soon he might even forget what he was like in the first place. Johan can't be erased, can't be forgotten. And Judai feels like he's vanishing already, so he throws himself into a wild interdimensional manhunt to save his hopes for the future.

Turns out that wanting to do good doens't always result in a good outcome. That's what Judai learns when Manjoume lashes out at him just seconds before disappearing. Along with the others, too. Judai doesn't even have the brain power to compute that some people are still there, that he can still save someone, because he realised then that he had focused so much on Johan that he'd completely overlooked the fact that while his friends relied on him a little too much, they hadn't meant any harm. And if he'd just told them, maybe they would have been fine, they could've cooperated- but Manjoume had told him that he was a traitor, that he'd doomed them with his irrational behaviour.

Manjoume's last words to him had been spoken with hatred and Judai realised only then that he had misread him entirely. He lets despair and self hatred take over as he realises that if he had managed to hurt the ones he cared about so easily, discarding them for the new good thing, he could just keep doing that. And it would stop hurting, eventually.

I like to think that Manjoume really does have an impact on the awakening of the Supreme King. Yeah, I know he only turns once Johan's death is mentioned, I know. I just suffer from abandonment issues and can't stand that Manjoume dying in front of him is more impactful to Judai than a guy who literally can't be trusted saying "Joke's on you, the one you're looking for is in another castle already dead."

So yeah. That's the angsty overview.

TL;DR Johan is an Adonis, Judai is smitten and Manjoume is very very heartbroken. But actually so is Judai. Because while being with Johan feels right, there's someone whose absence feels wrong, but he doesn't allow himself to dwell on it and everything goes to shit. All around a bad time for everyone and they'll have a lot of talking to do once they properly reconcile after graduation.

For #9 of more things to be written thing, Are Jaden and Yuma blood related or is it more of a found family kind of thing? Does Yubel and Astral exist as spirits partners?

I haven't really thought about it much yet as those lists are mostly little ideas to get out of my head once in a while.

But what the heck let's look over it!

Really it could be either-or, and we would have to figure out how it would differ between the two stories. If blood-related, would Yuma be old enough to remember Yubel? Would his memory be erased like Jaden's? How would the Emperor's Key get to Yuma? What about Akari? Is she still their older sister? If so what happened to her?

I go over the found family side later. But to tie these questions to the story idea:

Akari was both Jaden's and Yuma's older sister. Gran gran is no longer able to look after her grandkids which she did for a long while as her son and daughter-in-law were always away working.

But Akari, she took overlooking over her brothers. She had some jealousy due to Jaden getting Yubel from their father but she mainly put it aside due to how little Jaden actually got to see their dad. Yuma doesn't get the Emperor's Key until much later and it is not from their parents. So no jealousy from that. Instead, we have an overprotective sister who has two younger brothers to raise, and when Gran gran can't continue to help she is on her own...

And then Yubel starts acting up.

So people are falling into comas, straight up vanishing, and Jaden is freaking out. Because he doesn't know what is going on but the people he is friends with are getting hurt for no reason he can understand.

We are going with Akari being four years older than Jaden with Yuma two years younger than Jaden. So Yuma would not really remember these events or much of their parents, Gran gran, or even their sister because he was so young when she ended up in a coma thanks to Yubel not liking another person taking up Jaden's time from them.

So Jaden had already gone into the card drawing contest and by the time he was told he won there is a great weight on his shoulders. His parents are never home, Gran gran isn't able to look after them and now his older sister is hurt because his duel monster, who he got from his dad, didn't like her. (And didn’t that hurt. Dad was never home and the gift he did leave behind attacked one of the two people who has stayed.)

So he asks for Yubel to be sent to space, hoping that they would be able to get away and heal.

And to make sure they couldn't get to Yuma.

Something he wasn't planning on was his parents finding out something happened and having his memory erased. So now he doesn't have a clue, not a single clue, what happened to Akari and now he is very scared that something will happen to Yuma as well. But he can’t plan for it as he has no clue at all what happened!

So Yuma, the small sweet thing he is grew up with no parents, occasionally seeing his senile Gran gran who doesn't remember him at all between trips, only sees his sister in pictures or laying in a hospital bed in a coma, and an overprotective older brother trying his best to raise him.

Yuma wasn't able to keep his Key when it first popped up. Jaden took it to make sure it wouldn't hurt him, and eventually gave it back when he figured out that it helped Yuma stay calm when he wasn't there.

I will have to figure out how to get the key to him, but for now, it popped up.

Jaden will not be banning Yuma from dueling. He still duels so it would be hypocritical to do so. But that doesn't mean Yuma really gets the game. Jaden tries, oh how he tries to teach his little brother, but Yuma just cannot seem to get it. It is almost like something is stopping him from getting it.

Jaden’s overprotectiveness is not helped by the fact that Yuma having dreams of the future. Or the bullying problem at school. Which has been either been handled by Jaden getting into a fistfight or the bullies suddenly falling into some sort of problem. No one has fallen into a coma, but some have gone missing and others have gone mad.

No one knows what has been going on with the Yuki brothers but they do not have any friends because of it.

Thus the two only had each other for years and Yuma had to convince Jaden to try to get into Duel Academy. While Jaden wanted into the school he was worried about leaving his brother behind.

Then Yuma finds Yusaku and Shoichi. Laches onto them and will not let go. Poor Yusaku just started this alliance with Shoichi and is (poorly) trying to get over his trauma. Now, this little thirteen-year-old is following him around and asking him all sorts of questions about computers and duel monsters. (And asking about the strange figure in his shadow. But that just had to be a hyper imagination...right?)

Shoichi really does like the idea of Yuma opening Yusaku up and giving not only Yusaku a friend but Yuma one too. The kid, (Jaden too but saying anything to that teen would be a bad idea given how tense he is), is in desperate need of a friend.

So Jaden gets talked into letting this pair of hackers look after his little brother while he goes to Duel Academy.

And no he is not happy about it. He is even less happy when he comes home after his first year, (which was a headache and a half due to the Shadow Riders), and sees that his younger brother has a weird spirit following him around. (Jaden does not understand why he thinks this is so horrible after all Winged Kuriboh follows him around at times. But something in his gut screams that this is bad. Real bad.)

Astral does not have his memory and is looking for the Number Cards. So XYZ summoning is a brand new thing that has popped up. (Kinda like how Pendulum popped up in ArcV) And Yuma is doing his best to keep it on the down-low. Yusaku and Soichi have been pounding subtlety into this kid's head for about a year and while he is not great at it he tries so hard.

Astral appreciates Yuma's attempts to keep XYZ quiet and he is grateful for Jaden being able to see and hear him. Just having Yuma to talk to has been interesting and now he can learn more with another person to make observations on. Something Jaden is not amused about but is taking it with as much grace as he can right now.

And that is all I can think of right now I will get to the found family later.

WHAT IS THE LOONAVERSE? PART 1 – THE SCIENCE

LOONA is special among K-pop for its immersive storyline. These girls are not just k-pop idols performing a song, they also perform a story and that story is what we call the Loonaverse.

So, What is the Loonaverse? In a few words: The world and story that LOONA inhabits.

Yeah. Duh. But what is it?

Well… it’s complicated.

The Loonaverse is a fictitious story that borrows elements from real science and fantasy to build its world but also uses allegories, metaphors, allusions and other literary devices to tell its story. Our job as spectators (and specifically us theorizers) is to look beyond those devices to understand the message they are trying to send. In this post I’ll attempt to explain the science of the Loonaverse: parallel universes, time loops and the mobius strip.

PHYSICS VS FICTION

The Loonaverse can be described as the physical universe where the characters of LOONA live and where the events of the story happen.

By physical universe I mean that literally: its own universe. There are multiple theories that explain the existence of multiverses; from infinite universes theories to bubble theories to parallel universes to daughter universes; all incredibly interesting readings and all with fundaments in real physics.

On the other hand, the Loonaverse is a fiction story. Created by the creative minds of the people working in BlockBerry Creative (The company LOONA is under) and specifically by Jaden Jeong (who is a polarizing figure amongst Orbits). As a fiction story it is undeniable that the Loonaverse takes elements form science fiction and fantasy to build its story so going hard into the nitty gritty physics of how it works is ambitious at best and purposelessly time consuming at worst (though if you are interested in the nitty gritty of multiverse theory by all means go read about it, is mind-blowing). Nah, for the purposes of this (really not that long once we get to it) theory, we’ll focus only on a few key science related aspects:

MATHEMATICAL UNIVERSES

This particular multiverse theory debates whether math is a tool used by us to describe our universe or a fundamental truth of the universe itself. If it were the latter, then the possibility of multiple universes with vastly different mathematical structures is possible. This implies a different set of physics working in those universes. Basically: physics and mathematics themselves may work differently in different universes: It is as simple as is sounds. (Yeah, 2+2 may = fish in another universe, or flying is possible and even normal).

Using this admittedly long explanation for a constant in science fiction and fantasy, we now have a physics approved explanation for all the odd things that happen in the Loonaverse: super powers, climbing in air, destroying the moon, walking in the moon and most importantly: time disruptions.

 SPACE/TIME RELATIVITY

So… time is weird. Physicist can’t decide what exactly is time. Is it a dimension? A physical force of the universe? An illusion we humans use to perceive existence? Does it even exist at all? We’ll just assume it does and use Einstein’s theory of relativity to explain it.

So… The universe is composed of a 4-dimensional fabric called space-time. (Like, picture an actual tablecloth). When anything with mass falls into that tablecloth it creates a bend, that bend is what we call gravity. This gravitational pull modifies both how space and time are perceived. Everything close to that gravitational pull will move at exponentially slower time than anything outside of it. In simpler terms: Time varies depending of your relationship with another object. But if gravity can modify the way time is perceived, so can speed. The explanation for this is long and complicated and involves a difficult choice between speed not being absolute for anything except that light has an absolute speed and those two statements don’t match. But Einstein, being the clever guy he was, came up with Time dilation: The faster you move the slower time moves for you.

A simpler way to understand all this is to just watch the movie Interstellar. They did a really good job of conveying Einstein’s theory.

Of course, physics haven’t been able to prove the possibility of moving through time backwards, only forward. But hey! We are dealing with a different universe where the laws of math and physics don’t abide by Einstein’s theories. Well let’s unify science and fiction and talk about time travel.

 TIME DONUTS AND THE MOBIUS STRIP

Yeah, we finally got here.

The Mobius Strip. The one constant in the Loonaverse is the Mobius Strip. It’s importance has been confirmed by BlockBerry Creative and you’d be hard pressed to find any theory that doesn’t include it somewhere. So, What is a Mobius strip?

Also called the twisted cylinder, it is geometrical shape that has one side, one curve and it’s non orientable, forming a loop on its own. The properties of the mobius strip come into play in the sense that if you were to travel through it, you would go through you starting point once but from the opposite side of the strip before returning to your original starting position.

Curious things:  If you were to cut down a Mobius strip through the middle you would end up with long mobius. If you were to cut it twice at 1/3 the size each cut, you would end up with one long ass loop and one shorter loop that surrounds it.

Okay one more schiency term to explain:

Time donuts (not really called that way) is a time travel/time machine theory  that claims that a donut like vaccum that envelopes a sphere of matter and surrounded by a strong gravitational pull would create a void where time/space would collapse into itself, crating a sort of time loop where the closer you move to the sphere the bigger the gravitational pull to the point where you could even start going backwards. IT ALL COMES TOGETHER

Okay I read all this sciency stuff and I still don’t get it: How do all this relates to the Loonaverse? Well, my patient reader, all this science mumbo jumbo helps us understand the main conflict of the Loonaverse: escaping a never-ending time loop.

The theory states that the Loonaverse happens in a parallel universe where the laws of physics don’t abide to our own. In this universe the girls (LOONA) inhabit a space (moon maybe) that moves through time inside of a Mobius Strip, which itself envelopes a large dense sphere of mass, thus creating a time loop. The closer the girls get to the sphere the slower time moves to the point it may go backwards. Because they move through time in a Mobius Strip, the amount of time it takes them to re start the loop is long (though I am not sure how long). In the mean time they will go though their starting point but in the opposite side of the loop.

This means the girls are essentially trapped in a never-ending loop. Think Groundhog Day, Palm Springs, Russian Doll, Happy Death Day; and if time loop movies have taught us anything is that time loops kinda suck after a while.

But this also gives us the tools to possibly escape this loop. Our physics don’t abide in this universe, there are super powers, and mirror images and the possibility of escaping if we understand how it all works in the first place.

With all this science talk, doesn’t that make the Loonaverse a ScyFi story? Well… No.

Science Fiction as a genre uses technological and/or scientific advances to investigate and/or explain a human reality. It usually comes in the form of a warning (Brave New World) or as an exploration of what makes us human (Blade Runner). Science Fiction explores the possibilities of humanity in a technologically advanced future. Because the story LOONA tells us doesn’t explore the possibilities of a technologically ridden future or focuses on our relationship with these advancements, it cannot be called ScyFi.

TLDR:

The Loonaverse is the world and story that LOONA inhabits. It borrows form real life science and fantasy elements to better tell its story. It exists in a universe where the laws of physics differ from ours and where there is a set time loop in the form of a Mobius Strip, which the girls are trying to escape.

REMEMBER: This is all my interpretation of some very complex theories, theories I am unabashedly morphing to my will to fit a certain narrative (like scyfi and fantasy often do). Also, I didn’t come up with the idea of escaping the time loop, it’s kinda the oldest theory out there. It may even be confirmed by BlockBerry Creative. I am just explaining it the way it makes sense to me.

Why ‘The Karate Kid Part II’ Deserves More Respect

So guess what film I finished watching today? Of course, the Karate Kid franchise is considered iconic mainly for its first entry; Wax on Wax off, Skeleton fights, Sweep the Leg and the Crane Kick all cemented its legacy that allowed Cobra Kai to also be such a success. But imagine my shock when the approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes for Part II is 45% - 21% lower than the Jaden Smith ‘The Karate Kung Fu Kid’ version (and Part III is scored 15%, which is also super harsh but hard to debate outside of the magnificence of Terry Silver). Originally this was just gonna be a general post of how much I enjoyed retreading Part II, but upon seeing that score I had to give it my ‘Deserves More Respect’ posts.

It is an off-chance, but if you haven’t watched this film there will be spoilers within, I encourage you to watch it before reading, and maybe watch it again if you have so it’s fresh in the mind

Let’s start with a controversial point shall we? There are several parts where Part II is actually better than the original. Now I know! There’s a lot about the original which is iconic, but nostalgia does blind you to other shortcomings and while it’s easy to sell the first part because of its mystique, a sequel has the added pressure of rising above and developing on old and new themes set by the predecessor. The Premise In case you decided against refreshing your memory. Karate Kid Part II starts with a recap of Part I, a bit of content that was meant to be Part I’s final scene (in the script, not for filming) and then a timeskip. Ali with an i is gone - brutally dumping Daniel for some Football Player before Senior Prom and after crashing his car, Daniel’s mother is in Fresno for work and Miyagi has received a letter from his home Okinawa in news of his father’s fading health. The stage is set for Daniel and the audience to learn more about the iconic Mr. Miyagi and the life he left behind. Okay, so there is bad in this film Part II deserves respect, but it’s not perfect. It definitely gets messy near the end with Daniel’s antagonist Chozen, he mainly took beats from Johnny Lawrence in physically confronting Daniel when he could with a bunch of no-named goons and he fought pretty similarly to Johnny in catch counters and leg strikes. The opening recap did take a lot of time too, while the ending remained somewhat abrupt having just beaten up Chozen to embrace Kumiko (who had a delayed recovery after being punched once). While not bad, a fair amount of retreaded content felt like downgrades of the original; Chozen and Sato lacked the charisma of Johnny and Kreese, the crane kick was far more impressive than the drum technique and the Tournament setting was grander than the O-Bon festival. But, there are Iconic Moments in this film too Part I may have the Crane Kick and the Skeletons and the Training and Sweep the Leg. But people may forget that Part II had awesome moments too.

Like Daniel chopping through 6 Sheets of Ice! If that isn’t one hell of a power play I don’t know what is. It is a moment genuinely impressive in and outside of the 80s cheese universe of Karate Kid, and it gets referenced in Season 2 of Cobra Kai.

Also referenced in Season 2 is Miyagi vs Kreese. While this is the intended ending for Part I, it certainly acted better at the start of Part II, especially given that is foreshadows the situation Daniel finds himself in at the end of the movie. This moment is equally iconic as it completely encapsulates the character of both senseis - Kreese the confident brute brought to a sniveling mouse when size and power failed him and Miyagi the cool-headed and vastly more intelligent fighter still with the cheeky prankster lightness to him as he honks the scared shitless Kreese on the nose. Perfect.

While I did want to cite the Tea Ceremony as well I think the more iconic moment for Part II had to be Miyagi chopping the log during the storm. The storm itself is a very well-done scene which unmasks several characters in the face of adversity. True tension, worry and stakes are sold as the village are in danger of the cruel whims of nature, an act which is all too real for Sato when the house he’s in collapses on him in the calm before his scheduled deathmatch with Miyagi. Not only is this again some great foreshadowing by the rule of three (Daniel asking if Miyagi can chop a log like Sato is doing with a banner and then Miyagi and Sato meeting and seeing Sato fail to chop a log) it proves a pivotal point where Sato turns from aggrieved antagonist to repenting ally. A great show of power and friendship as Miyagi metaphorically breaks the rift between their friendship that weighs Sato down. Okay, we hear you, but how is it better? I do have to preface that I do still love Part I, I have to because in pointing out where Part II is better I have to pick at Part I’s faults. While the ending is messy Part II definitely has much better pacing, until the skeletons scene Part I doesn’t really pick up because it has to set up, Part II while it does recap doesn’t need to worry about it. Giving Miyagi the main plot was definitely Part II’s strongest suit. Part I profited from Miyagi being the ‘mysterious old teacher’ but learning a lot more about his humanity and history was engrossing and it allowed positive development for Miyagi and Daniel, especially their bond as a surrogate father and son when Daniel personally goes out of his way to support Miyagi on a very personal matter. The main characters maintain their charm as well, still a lovely array of life lessons in Part II more than just finding balance, Miyagi teaches Daniel through words and action on taking time to breathe, to refocus when imbalanced, to forgive rather than to harbour hate, mercy, selflessness and humbleness

The scenes involving Miyagi and his father were some of the most deep and emotive of the series up until Cobra Kai, some still haven’t been topped such as Miyagi’s dad’s first words to his son or when Daniel talked about when his father died.  And say what you will about Chozen, he does have a lot of Johnny vibes but a lot of the character we believed was Johnny due to nostalgia goggles was more fitting of Chozen’s manner. The story did a great job in making sure Chozen was always an asshole, at times Johnny did at least display honour and grace but Chozen was always sore about stuff and quick to claim dishonour even when he was in the wrong. Contrary to Johnny it’s more about his family than it is about a girl, which allowed a lot more freedom in the plot. Whether you felt Elizabeth Shue’s Ali with an i was prettier than Tamlyn Tomita’s Kumiko is up to personal preference, but the messy-haired Kumiko definitely had a slightly improved presence in Part II than Ali did, with actual focus on her own feelings outside of attraction to Daniel, her ambition to become a dancer directly linking to the O-Bon Festival - which in turn related to the Drum technique - as well as the delicately beautiful Tea Ceremony scene and actually contributing to the final fight (granted Ali wouldn’t be allowed to). Also Daniel didn’t try to eat her face which is a general improvement to the romantic subplot, extra applause has to go to Tomita here too because this was legitimately her first role - Shue had her second so that’s impressive too - and both women had good careers going forward. The increased stakes definitely worked in the favour of Part II as well, as sequel culture is forced to do, but by moving to Okinawa (actually filmed in Hawaii) we opened the door to better suit Miyagi’s world while keeping Daniel the fish out of water. I can’t speak too much for appropriation because there is still kinda some ‘white saviour’ undertones but I didn’t feel like Japan was treated negatively in this light, its culture of the O-Bon Festival and the Tea Ceremony was treated with the utmost respect and explained without pandering, the flute music had definitely stepped up its game for the soundtrack as did the imagery. Can also appreciate that Daniel does go for the Crane kick when fighting Chozen but is parried. Added hat tip has to go to costuming too. A lot of costumes would have to have distinct Kamon such as Sato’s twin fish and Miyagi’s bonsai on a lot of their clothing

Between Sato and Miyagi the colours of their clothes often code their emotions towards each other, with Sato usually in grey and Miyagi in white or cream, when Sato and Miyagi prepare for death they are in black and when Sato wants forgiveness he moves to a lighter shade. While Part I also used black and white to differ Johnny and Daniel, Part II put Chozen and Daniel in the more Japanese-themed Red and Blue. While both men wear red, blue and whites at time, Chozen’s clothes almost devolve from the white he debuts in as his darker side comes out before flat out embracing yellow after his chance to prove his honour in the storm is refused (and he’s in white then), while Daniel often moves to Red or red tones even in his blue shirt. Kumiko also moves from white to blue, sometimes even purple, in set up to the final fight to have the primary colours stand out in the colourful crowd of the O-Bon festival, but even in the blue Kumiko had red to pair her connection with Daniel. Also her Yukata at the festival is just stunning, the Great Wave off Kanagawa print is a nice touch.

Anything else we should know? It might not be much else about the film itself I can tell you, but I do appreciate something I’m starting to call ‘The Rocky Connection’ when it comes to Karate Kid. Like Part I’s ‘You’re the Best (Around)’ was shortlisted for Rocky III, Part II’s song ‘Glory of Love’ was shortlisted for Rocky IV’s theme, losing to ‘Hearts on Fire’, Bill Conti also chose to score this film instead of Rocky IV. I like to pair this with Daniel’s Rocky-esque character, he has that same kind of swagger but a lot more naive and childlike. Martin Kove also gets a nod because those bleeding hands were legit, he had an accident on-set and the footage was kept for the final cut. Tamlyn Tomita wasn’t the only film debut for Part II, B.D. Wong of...well, several famous roles including but not limited to Shang in the animated Mulan, Dr. Wu in the Jurassic Park franchise, Hugo Strange in Gotham and many more, also had his debut here in a minor speaking role when he’s handing out flyers for the dance party to Kumiko and Daniel before the Ice Chopping Scene. So, why does it deserve respect A film that adds to a beloved character in a respectful fashion without having really any god awful moments does not deserve a 4.5/10 rating. It may not have as emphatic an ending or as great a villain but it has a captivating plot and a good pace, better stakes and much more emotionally driven and responsive scenes. A lot of effort and dedication went into this film to explore new dimensions of the main characters in a fashion which was enjoyable and at times heartwarming. And characters are given human moments, even Miyagi confesses himself not to be perfect and it keeps each character grounded. Even to this day parts of Part II are remembered fondly rather than the campness that Part III had outside of Terry Silver and his magnificent ponytail, the fondness also continues to reflect in Cobra Kai with homages and fan theories of Daniel going to Okinawa again and even re-encountering Chozen. Not to mention it grossed $113m on a $13m budget and got nominated for a Best Original Song Oscar (losing to Top Gun) Part II was a good and enjoyable film which deserves far more credit than to be rated this low, for that it deserves respect.

GX Month Day 29: “Don’t Forget Me!”

Not exactly underappreciated via the fandom, but it will never not piss me off that Jesse disappeared for half the f*ucking season. He got damseled. HE GOT F*UCKING DAMSELED. Then he shows up for - what? - three episodes in season 4 AND GETS DAMSELED AGAIN.

I’m running out steam and easy to write ideas or I’d write about someone else, I promise. Maybe next year.

Set right after Rainbow Dragon sends Duel Academy back to the island.

The back of Jesse’s head slams against an uneven wall, sparks flaring beneath his eyelids. Amethyst snarls and the clawed hand leaves his throat, and Jesse collapses forward with a gasp. Is he bleeding? Doesn’t feel like it. Where are they? It’s so dark. Brilliant flashes of color light up the stone cavern as screams echo in his ears; Jesse jerks his head up and catches sight of the giant gemstones in the fading light. Okay, that’s fine, they’re still with him-

The crystals shatter before his eyes.

Breath stuck to his throat, he stumbles up. “What did you do to them?!”

His head slams against the wall once more before he’s even got his feet under him. Choking, he paws uselessly at the claws around his neck as black dots dance across his vision.

“Judai is mine!” the duel monster screams. “Mine!”

“Who-?” Jesse rasps.

“You think because you call him by a different name you lay claim to him?! How many names have I called him? He is mine! My Darkness!”

“What?”

His ears are ringing, his vision wavers, he can barely breath the claws digging holes in his throat, and he can’t feel his family. The space of his awareness where their light usually shines is a gaping dead zone and- what if they’re dead? No they can’t be dead they’re spirits! But even spirits can die, he watched one die right in front of him-

Something hard and sharp hits him across the face and sends the world spinning as he careens sideways. Jesse heaves in a breath as he hits the floor.

“I’m the one you should be paying attention to!” Yubel screeches, and as Jesse squints up at her - him? - through wavering vision, he swears he’s seen the duel monster somewhere before. “I’ve worked too long to reunite with Judai! I won’t let you take him away from me!”

Who the fuck is-- Does she mean Jaden? ‘Judai’?? Worry about it later.

Pushing himself up on shaky arms, Jesse braces himself against the wall and shuts his eyes against the throbbing headache. The room - cave? - still feels like it’s spinning. “What do you want from me?” His voice cracks as he looks up at the duel monster again. There’s a part of him, a small part, that’s terrified she’s going to kill him. And honestly? He expected Yubel to kill him. He hadn’t expected to face death completely alone.

They aren’t dead, they aren’t!

Yubel bares her fangs in an action that could either be a smile or a snarl. “I’m going to use you as bait.”

“What?” The breath leaves his lungs as something cold lodges into the pit of his stomach. Somehow that one sentence is more terrifying than the prospect of a lonely death. 

“He may have forsaken me, but he’ll come back for you.” Yubel’s eyes glow menacingly in the dark room. “He loves you after all.”

Jesse almost laughs, the hysteric sound bubbling behind his lips. “Listen here, I don’t know what kind of ridiculous idea you’ve got in your head but things between Jay and I definitely ain’t like that.”

Yubel’s eyes flash. “There is more than one kind of love, foolish light child!”

“Fair enough.” Jesse isn’t going to waste his last breath arguing with a psychotic demon. If he’d ever imagined his eventual death, this wouldn’t have been high on the list. Leaning his head back again, he tries to decide if closing his eyes makes the spinning feel better or worse. He feels it then, sluggish and barely there, but a spark is spark. His family is still with him.

He stands shakily. His head is going to regret this. “But I ain’t letting you have your way either.” Bracing against the wall, Jesse drives his heel into the duel monster’s jaw.

Yubel reels backward with a snarl, and Jesse scrambles to his feet, fighting vertigo as he searches for an exit-

Sharp pain tears down his back. Jesse screams and crashes to the floor. His ears ring with the distant screams of family. Yubel descends upon him in a fury.

“You dare?! You insolent child!” Claws sink into the flesh of his shoulder and Jesse whimpers, automatically jerking away and nearly screaming again as his back lights up with agony. “You will only cause him more pain!”

His lungs heave, perpetually caught on the edge of another scream. The pulse in his ears threatens to drown out the creature screaming above him. His arms tremble uselessly against the cold stone. He couldn’t pick himself up even if he wasn’t pinned beneath Yubel’s weight. His back-

“I will not let him cry for you again!”

A...again? The image of Jaden’s face hovering over him streaked with tear surfaces in his mind, but Jesse’s never even seen Jaden cry. None of this makes any sense? “I just...wanna protect ‘im,” he mumbles absently.

“Protect him?” Yubel snarls. “What would you sacrifice for him? Your life? Death is easy! Try being the one who must live on after watching your beloved die, over and over!”

The pain in his shoulder flares and Jesse cries out again, shaking violently; he’s really going to die here. “I’m sorry!” he screams. He doesn’t know what he’s apologizing for.

“You haven’t changed, light child,” Yubel hisses. “But you are still useful.”

He doesn’t know what that means and, honestly, that’s more terrifying than the muder happy lunatic with their claws sunk into his flesh. His vision dances red and black as he lies there heaving, trying to will any amount of strength into his limbs to fight back; but even twitching his shoulder makes him want to scream in agony. How long will he even survive with an injury like this?

Claws grip the back of his head. One final desperate plea. Something. Anything. “Yubel-” 

The creature yanks his head back and pain blossoms across his temple.

The insufferable child finally stills beneath them. Yubel waits in case it’s just a ploy, but the boy’s breath evens out, and his erratic thoughts quiet. His guardians still chitter from their prison.

“Be silent!” Yubel flicks another wave of shadows around the deck, reinforcing the bindings. Standing, they turn their attention back to the light child. Their claws cut deep, blood already pooling on the stone floor of the cave. Human bodies are frail. They’ll have to deal with that. They need him alive for now.

They wave a claw and recoil as the hot warmth pulsates within them. The shadows scatter in its brilliance. No, damnit! The shadows are theirs to command and they will not let this infection stop them! Yubel bends the shadows into submission until the wounds have been crudely patched; not fully healed, but all the better; an injured captive can struggle less.

“Well, that was quite a show.” The other boy steps from the shadows, clapping. Yubel narrows their eyes at him. He is shifty and devious, willing to do anything to get what he wants. But he proved useful, and he is not the only one willing to use others for his own gain. “So he’s going to be bait, huh?” The other boy bends down to observe the unconscious light child. “What are you going to do with Jaden when you get him?”

“That’s not your concern.”

The boy’s smile is a lie. “I suppose not. Anyway...” His eyes glint as he stands.

“As promised.” Yubel stretches out a claw and scales form around the other boy’s hand. He flexes it thoughtfully, while Yubel turns their attention to another part of the cavern.

“So what now?”

The card is right where they left it, still safe inside the capsule. They have finally broken free of this pathetic prison, but the chains may still prove useful. Sliding the card somewhere safe, Yubel returns to sling the unconscious light child over their shoulder.

“Now we set the next stage.”

Judai will be theirs and theirs alone even if they have to break him to do it.

I'm about to go to bed it's literally midnight rn but I would like to once again spread my "Alexis suffers from paranoia and separation anxiety for a while after Atticus returns" headcanon propaganda.

And she completely does, at least for the remainder of season 1 as far as what we see from her on screen. By season 2 he's been back long enough she's probably gotten better at handling it but still deals with it, just maybe not as strongly anymore.

But think about it. Atticus was her whole world, he taught her how to play Duel Monsters, he's literally the reason she's taken her life in the direction she has. They never tell us exactly how long he was missing but I've always been under the impression that he's been gone for a year. Which is a long time for a person to be missing. And all that time Alexis's biggest concern was finding her brother. That's her entire motivation in the first season, everything she does is to try and find some kind of clue or something that could help her find Atticus. Or if it's not the main reason, she's got that thought in her head and often remarks or has an inner monologs moment about how it's a possible outcome in situations that she might find something.

And she puts on a brave face but you know this situation has really affected her, and I hate to say it but there is no way she never once thought that he was dead or just gone forever with him being gone for so long. She's adamant about finding him but also she leaves roses at the abandoned dorm, and in the dub and we all know I'm an expert on the dub lol at least she always says the same thing when she does that: "be at peace, brother. Wherever you are." In my mind I've always seen it like she really does believe he's still out there alive somewhere and she'll be able to find him and bring him home, but there is a part of her that's still worried maybe he's really gone. And that's a lot of intense emotions to be juggling and carrying around all the time. She loves her brother more than anything and all she wants is to bring him home but you know she was worried and scared that she'd never see him again too.

And then he returns.

After all that time, all the fear and worrying and anxiety and tireless searching, Alexis has her brother back again. And thus now we see her grow to be very protective of him and reasonably so. Especially considering that when he returns, he's very unwell. Both from the duel with Jaden, and I assume also probably from being under Nightshroud's control for such an extended period of time. So he's stuck in the hospital recovering the majority of the rest of the arc. Atticus is both physically and mentally unwell after his return, spending most of the time unconscious or just kinda quietly staring out the window because he can't remember anything and the toll this has taken on him is exponential to say the least.

Also after his return, Alexis spends practically every second she can spare by his side. She's not letting him out of her sight ever again if and when she can help it, it's just not an option. No one is going to harm or take her big brother away from her again.

Smash cut to "The Seventh Shadow Rider" where Banner under the guise of Amnael starts to make his move. Alexis is walking outside of the obelisk dorm when she hears glass break in the dub (my beloved) they remove the audio cue for no reason so she's really just got a spidey sense bro aksksks and immediately just knows Atticus is in danger and runs up to his room to check on him only to discover the place is trashed and he's missing. So she runs after Amnael demanding that he return Atticus to her. I touch on this in my shadow rider arc rewrites should be under my "abby rewrites yugioh gx" tag if y'all wanna find that post but they really give him no reason to kidnap Atticus aside from luring Alexis out so he can duel her and take her key. In my version he has other reasons for taking Atticus apart from that which is 👍.

I'm tired, it's literally been like 45 minutes since I started this post so it's like quarter to 1 am rn, and lord knows if I've even remotely explained it well, but given all of the context clues and inferences that can be made about Alexis pre-Atticus return and what we see from her post-Atticus return I find it entirely possible that after he comes back, Alexis suffers from separation anxiety and maybe even a little bit of paranoia about his safety. And I write her with that in mind in my fics every time. She's very protective of Atty and she always needs to know where he is and if he's safe and won't trust him to anyone else, even Jaden, if he's in trouble. She also gets nervous if they're not together and she doesn't know where he is, I know I've got moments like that coming up in fics I'm working on right now.

Long story short, Alexis has separation anxiety with Atticus and it makes me upset and If I have to suffer the emotional damage so do the rest of you.

Seto was never one to complain about anything, especially now that he found some free time to spend the whole week with you, so a little bit of cold shouldn’t bother him so much...Despite the fact that It was already late December and snow was everywhere.

Seeing that, you giggled at him and how he tried to stop himself from stuttering because of the cold, but failing miserably.

As well as that, his fingers were blue and he was trying to warm them up.

“Seto, sweety, aren’t you cold?” you asked, clearly knowing the answer, but wanting to tease him nonethless.“I’m Fine.” he chattered, making you chuckle.

You grasped his hands in yours and started exhaling warm air on them, which had him a stuttering mess.

“Stop that, I’m not cold, S/O!” he tried to protest, but you only grinned at him.“Oh, shut up, Seto the Snowman!” you smirked as you put his hands on your neck, trying to warm them up a bit.

Despite his protests, you started softly kissing the back of his hands, each and every knuckle, and you could swear his face couldn’t get any redder.

Chuckling, you guided him to the nearest cafe, a very intimate and smol place, very warm, the smell of hot chocolate filling the air soothingly.

“Don’t do that again.” Seto muttered, looking away. “Not in public...”“But Seto, darling, you seemed like you were enjoying yourself. A bit more and you’d have purred like a little kitten!” you cooed at how adorable he was being, despite his embarrassed frown.“Why are you like this...” he muttered in annoyance, but set his hands down on the table, holding yours tightly.

In the corner of your eye, you noticed Anzu and Yugi enjoying a cup of hot tea, and she giggled, taking a pic of the two of you.

Better not forget to ask her for the picture and frame it later~!

Mutou Yugi

You and Yugi decided to go out, see the beautiful Christmas light and admire the ethereal Winter Wonderland, but what neither of you expected was for this to be a much colder evening than all the other ones, and whilst yes, you enjoyed the beauty of the city...You were both freezing to death.

Well, Yugi more than you, for some reason, but nonetheless, pretty annoying.

“Yugi, dear, do you want to go to the arcade together? Maybe we can warm up a bit there.” you asked, worried for him.“It would be fun...But first, I wanna show you something!” Yugi grinned innocently, guiding you in the city center, near the big Christmas Tree, and now, you waited. “Just 10 more minutes, I promise!” he exclaimed in a hyped voice, while trying to warm up his hands by rubbing them together.

Chuckling, you held his hands and started rubbing them yourself, then when you felt them a bit warmer, you kissed his knuckles, smiling softly while at it, as you heard Yugi squeak slightly.

“S-S/O, I should be doing this to you, not vice-versa!” he protested in a panicked yet embarrassed voice.“I felt like doing it. Doesn’t matter who does it, it’s sweet nonetheless.” you chuckled at his blushy face and adorable pout, which made you kiss his cheek too.“Oh, S/O, look! It started!” he raised his voice, pointing upwards, towards the sky and needless to say, a gorgeous show of colourful fireworks began, making both of you awww in delight.

Before it ended, you felt your hand being squeezed and looking to your right, you see Yugi kissing your hand tenderly, making your heart beat faster and melt at how adorable he was being.

“Awww, Yugi, thank you so much for everything! I love you so much!” you cooed in glee, kissing him softly, his face going as red as a tomato.“M-My pleasure, S/O...Hehe.” he stuttered, grinning widely, in complete bliss.

Jounouchi Katsuya

It was a Winter day much colder than all the other ones this year and that’s when you and Katsuya decided to have a date, not realising that you’d both die of cold.

He’s always been a gentleman, so it’s no surprise that he offered you his jacket, not accepting any refuses, so now you were feeling warm...But poor Katsu was barely able to speak from the cold.

“Katsu, you’re freezing to death, let’s go inside, okay?” you tried, but he shook his head.“No, S/O, we were supposed to go on a date...” he managed to usher between his trembling.“We can have an inside date too, you know? I don’t like the cold that much. My home is nearby, we can watch a movie or chill by the fireplace.” you tried to suggest, but you could see he was second-guessing himself.“But I don’t want to ruin our date...” he pouted and you could feel your heart skipping a beat at how cute he was.“Baby, any second spent with you is well-spent, no matter the place. Besides, it was you who was so sweet to give me his jacket and make sure I’m warm and comfortable. Come on, let’s go home.” you smiled tenderly at him, grasping both his hands and kissing them softly, before leaning your face in his touch.

He remained speechless all the way home, and more, even when you were both cuddled up in front of the fireplace, the blanket over both of you.

All of a sudden, you feel Katsuya hug you tighter, kissing your temple, then mimicking your actions by kissing your hands and smiling tenderly as he leaned in your warm touch.

“I love you so much, S/O. I don’t even know how to put it in words, but I really do. You’re so sweet and understanding...I just hope I can be the perfect boyfriend for you as well.” he smiled softly, making your heart melt.“Awww, Katsu, you’re such a sweetheart, I couldn’t possibly ask for a better boyfriend than you. I love you.” you looked at him adoringly once again, melting at his lovely words, leaning in his embrace and closing your eyes, feeling inner peace and happiness.

Sugar & Spice - 8.

Sebastian’s pov

“I found her.” Scarlett’s voice is music to my ears. She sends me her location and I basically run to her. When I get there, she’s sitting alone on a swing. Why the hell did she come to a playground ? I sit on the swing next to hers.

“I’m sorry about the interview. I just…”

“I know,” I say. “I don’t blame you.” It’s important that she knows that.

“It’s just, you know, it felt like last year all over again and… I don’t want that.”

“It’s okay. Really.”

She falls silent again, giving me time to think about what happened last year. I wish I knew how it all came to this point, but we never really got an answer.

It all started when y/n was spotted at a party with a yarmulke on her head. Someone took a picture and leaked it. Since she was smiling and had a drink in her hand, everyone assumed she was making fun of Jewish beliefs. They didn’t care that y/n’s sister’s husband was a Jewish man, that the party was his birthday, that he’d put the hat on her head himself for a split second to make her laugh, and that the drink she was holding was orange juice because she was two months pregnant. I was the only one to know that, not even her boyfriend, Jaden. She didn’t want to keep it and I was going to take her to an abortion center the next day. From then on, everything went to shit. People started taking things she’d said out of context, making her look like a horrible person. And when they followed us to the abortion center… They didn’t recognise me, which might’ve been worse for her, but she was on the pictures and it caused her to break up with Jaden. The first thing she did after the break-up was drinking a glass of pink wine. Then a bottle. Then a few weeks later, she called me to pick her up from a bar. This is why I checked every bar I could today. I thought she would be in one of those.

“How did you find me ?” She asks, getting me out of my memories.

“Scarlett.”

“Funny, she didn’t come here.” She grabs her phone and checks it. “Oh, right. Snapchat. Where were you before she called ?”

I think of what to say. If I tell her where I was, what will she believe ? That I think she’s an alcoholic mess ?

“You looked for me in bars, didn’t you ?”

It’s not even a question.

“I thought…”

“It would be like last time.”

“Yeah. I’m sorry, I just… I freaked out and-”

“You don’t have to justify yourself. I did go to a bar first.”

I turn my head to her and immediately check her eyes.

“Oh, don’t worry, I didn’t get anything. I got out and figured this place-” She gestured towards the area around us. “I thought this place would be a really hard one to find any alcohol.”

“You’re right. I’m proud of you, you know ?”

“It doesn’t matter anymore, though.”

“What ? No-”

“Seb, I screwed it up. Like I screw everything up.”

“You’re not-”

“Let’s face it : I destroy everything I lay a hand on. And  I won’t let you allow me to do that to you.”

I stand up and grab her hand, making her stand before me.

“I can take care of myself.”

“Yeah, but I’ll make it harder. I’ll make your life miserable, Seb, is that really what you want ? It’s what happened with Jaden-”

“Jaden was a dick.” I said it, that’s it.

“Wow, thank God there’s no kids around.” She sounds pissed.

“If Jaden had been a nice, understanding man, he would’ve respected your decision last year. He didn’t.”

“I should’ve told him…”

“Y/n, you guys had been dating for three months !”

Her eyes fall to the ground. I gently grab her chin and get her to look at me.

“I’m not letting you down, you hear me ?”

I can see tears forming in the corner of her eyes. God, I wish I could kiss her right here, right this second. But I also know there’s always a risk to be seen, a risk I can’t take right now. If a picture of us kissing gets leaked… Even holding her chin like this is dangerous.

“Let’s go home and talk, okay ?”

She nods and I’m careful not to touch her until we get in the car, where I finally grab her hand. She squeezes it hard and when we get to her place, I can feel my pulse in my fingertips. Once her front door is closed, she throws herself in my arms, breaking down completely. I walk her to her couch and as we sit together, I hold her tight against me, rocking her back and forth like a child. It soothes her.

“I’m here and I’m not going anywhere until the premiere. We’re gonna get through this.”

“I- I don’t wanna keep hurting you.” Her voice is reduced to a whisper but her words still hit me like a slap in the face. Is she really that scared of hurting me ?

“You’re not hurt-”

“I know I am. I’m hurting you, I’m hurting Scarlett… You’re the only ones who were there for me and now I’m being the worst. I’m sorry.” She sobs even louder. The times I’ve seen her cry like this are rare.

“This is going to be okay. We’ll help you get better, I promise.”

“So you really are sticking around ?”

“Always.”

She curls up against me and rests her head on my chest. I run my hand through her hair, expecting her to fall asleep. She doesn’t. Instead, she looks at me with her bright teary eyes.

“Will you still want me if I get better ?”

“I-” Her question startles me. “Of course I will. I’m here for the worst parts of your life and I’ll stick around for the best ones. Don’t forget that.”

She smiles. It’s small, almost invisible, but the corners of her lips twitch. She wipes her eyes and lays her hand on my cheek.

“It’s you, isn’t it ?”

“What do you mean ?”

“You’re the only one who’s ever made me feel like this.”

“How ?” I ask, genuinely curious. This is so out of the blue. My heart is pounding in my chest, my lips burning with words that would probably scare her away. I should stop being so romantic.

“Peaceful,” she says as she closes her eyes and a smile forms on her face. “I really enjoy that.”

“I mean, this makes me…I’m so happy to hear you say that. I promise I’ll keep doing that, then.” I smile back to her and lean in a little. If she doesn’t lean in as well, I promise myself I’ll back off. She does, though. Her lips brush against mine, and I want to close the distance so hard… But this is her time to do it. I have to let her come to me and not trick her into it. She has to want it so I can be sure I’m not taking advantage of her current state. She presses her lips on mine and they start moving. I kiss her back, softly. She pulls away after a few seconds and rests her head back on my chest.

“Could you stay over tonight ?” She asks. “I know it’s- it’s quick but I don’t think I can sleep on my own.”

“Of course I’ll stay.” I don’t even have to think about it. “How about I make us two hot cups of chocolate milk ?”

“I’d love that, but I also don’t want you to move.”

“I see you already made yourself comfortable,” I tease.

She giggles weakly. I jump in joy on the inside. I lay my head on the couch’s headrest and my eyes slowly close as her slow breathing makes my own breath drop off. She’ll never make me feel anything but happiness, I know it.

Sorry that it took me a while to get to these; I’ve been very low energy and am still low energy so apologies for that!

As for Marie, her real name is Olivia (her stage name is Marie Annette) and yes, it’s a pun, because she is the Ultimate Marionettist. You can ask more about her @aroseandapen since she is L’s muse.

However, Marie’s plot wasn’t created so she could run away from the consequences of her actions--in actuality, they’re much more sinister. You see, the basic idea we have right now is that a certain someone knew about the chapter 3 blackened before they murdered the second victim, but was being blackmailed into silence--because they had a secret they would rather die for than let get loose. However, this lead to Marie’s friend/lover/family/whatever idk we haven’t decided that part yet, get killed as the second victim. After learning about that person’s involvement, Marie gets furious and blames them, but everyone pretty much forgives them once they understand. All but Jaden, who while he does understand their motives, also understands that Marie is still hurt by them and it did cause the death of someone else, and at least had mixed feelings about it and made the mistake of expressing this to Marie.

That was a huge mistake, because Marie then decided that everyone but Jaden should live, and then she was presented with the opportunity to force Jaden into a blackened role. She then makes sure he couldn’t communicate the fact that he was he blackened (as he tried to leave evidence in the form of his glasses at the crime scene, but Marie figured him out quickly and ordered him not to be sneaky about it and not let anyone know) and yeah. Marie basically made Jaden into a blackened not to escape from punishment, but to punish everyone (including herself) and let Jaden go free.

This, of course, backfires, but that’s probably why Marie had Jaden kill that specific classmate. Because at least that person would be dead if her plan failed.

The worst part is that Marie is a pretty good person before this, too, which makes the betrayal so much more impactful.

I can give you a little backstory on Adrian, Jaden, and Irene if you like! I have those written out, so;

Adrian Blanc, the Ultimate Dilettante;

Adrian’s life was pretty mundane and average. They grew up in the middle class, had a normal life with their normal family and normal friends. There was nothing extra ordinary about them, nothing to report. The only thing that caught anyone’s attention, in fact, was how intelligent and sharp Adrian was.

Adrian has the Ultimate Analysis ability, and with their ADHD, tend to hyperfixate on different subjects of all kinds (I.E. Art, music, writing, math, science, mechanics, you name it)  but before they could master any skill, Adrian would always give up, claiming that they had grown too bored of the trade to continue. Adrian became known in their little town as “the renaissance child” or “the jack of all trades,” and would often take on small jobs and favors from neighbors to complete a mundane task. However, they were never talented enough to get a stable job from professionals of the craft, being told that their mediocre skills weren’t enough to qualify for anything.

One day, Adrian’s popularity in their hometown got out to the bigger name cities, and they were asked to star on a talk show and display their many mediocre talents.

Impressed by their wide array of skills, the American Ultimate Initiative contacted Adrian to ask them if they wanted to attend the American Hope’s Peak Academy as “The Ultimate Dilettante.” Hesitantly, Adrian agreed, though is uncomfortable with their title.

Adrian is insecure over their lack of mastering any single talent, and feels as if their “Ultimate Title” can feel like someone was mocking them for it. After all, in the modern professional world, a “Jack of all trades” was pretty useless.

Jaden Holland, the Ultimate Digital Artist;

The Holland family is a black, progressive family that consists of Jaden’s mother (Agatha), Jaden’s elder sister (Jayleen), Jaden’s elder brother (Glenn) and Jaden himself, and a small dog named Juniper. (You can ask L more about Jayleen and Glenn)

Jaden’s father left their family when Jaden was just born, so his mother and his elder sister were the ones who mostly raised Glenn and Jaden. With Agatha working in the police force and their overall family ideals being liberal, Jaden grew up more socially aware and expressive early on. However, when he was a young child, Jaden was attacked by a large mixed breed stray dog, which left grotesque scars on his neck and unable to use his vocal chords. Ever since, he has been wearing high-collared shirts and turtle necks to hide them, embarrassed and ashamed of the scars. He also found that whispering could be painful at times, so he and his family learned sign language.

Aside from that traumatic event, Jaden lived a relatively calm life, and he took interest in digital art soon after the attack. He begged his mother for a pen tablet, and kick started his talent in the digital arts. Jaden has posted over one-thousand pieces of art under the user “Silenced-Arts.” He became quite a popular artist over time, and soon, he was written about in newspapers and online articles as “the boy who can paint a photo,” which was a reference to Jaden’s typical art style being hyper-realistic paintings of surreal scenes that people often would often mistake as photos or edited photos. This caused a bit of controversy until Jaden learned how to use Hypercam and other screen-recording software, and posted various drawing videos that immediately made him an even more popular artist on youtube and all over the web.

Jaden expanded his skills to different forms of digital art, such as 3D modeling and 2D/3D animation. However, he is most comfortable and skilled with painting and drawing.

His skills and talent grew until finally, just before his second year of high school, Jaden was scouted by the American Hopes Peak Academy as the Ultimate Digital Artist for a student film that was all animated but was 100% painted and hyper realistic.

Jaden has a special pair of gloves made by “A friend of a friend” (hint: It Miu) that has special sensors that can translate his signing to American English, and has a speaker that projects a voice resting in his breast pocket. This idea is loosely based off of this amazing keyboard “glove” where each unique hand gesture represents a unique letter. It relies on the same principle, except using ASL gestures and a blue tooth “text to speech” speaker. The speaker sounds as fluid and human as K1-B0’s voice, and the gloves have sensors to change the “tone” of his voice and mimic the emotion he wants to convey. (Jaden has the bonus of being able to manually select an emotion with gestures that are unique but do not mean anything in ASL, such as double tapping your thumb and index finger together... well unless that is a thing in sign language, I’m not sure.)

Jaden’s older brother, Glenn, is a member of D.I.C.E. as a fire dancer.

Irene Foster, the Ultimate Street Fighter;

Irene was a runaway orphan, originally born into a wealthy family. Her parents were always busy with work, so Irene was typically left to her own devices or kept busy with random lessons that varied from piano lessons to fencing. However, her parents were assassinated due to her father’s business company making enemies in the wrong places. The assassin didn’t kill Irene, only because of the guilt that he pretty much just made this girl into an orphan. (He wasn’t very good at being an assassin.)

Irene then ran away from Britain to New York City by stowing away on an airplane, and ran away from foster homes that took her in until she started getting into fights. Eventually, underground criminal rings for street fighting took an interest in her, and this earned her access to an underground street fighting ring. She was a natural fighter (though often feeling like she was fighting for her very life) and quickly earned a living off of her matches.

Eventually, she came across a house just outside of the city that had caught on fire. Among the flames was a little girl named Erin Rider, holding a teddy bear in one hand and a lighter in the other. After a little prying, Irene learned that Erin was a victim of constant abuse from her parents, and she thought she could burn the house down and run away. Erin is unaware that she killed her parents in the house fire and assumes they thought she died and never looked for her. Irene never had the heart to tell Erin that she killed her own parents, and instead, decided to take care of the little girl as her own sister. She decided it would be a secret she took with her to her grave.

With another mouth to feed, however, Irene had to take on more challenges to earn money enough for both her and Erin to eat, and eventually, Irene became known in the underground ring as “The Girl of Iron.” This caught the attention of the American Ultimate Initiative, and Irene earned her title as the “Ultimate Street Fighter.”

Now just for you, I’ll go ahead and type out Leah’s back story to the best of my ability because why not:

Leah Welsh, the Ultimate Hunter/Huntress;

Leah was disowned by her parents at the age of 13, once she finally confessed to them that their son, Orlando, didn’t exist anymore and wanted to be a girl named Leah. The transphobic backlash from her parents came as a genuine, horrifying shock to Leah, and she immediately ran away to her grandfather Orrin’s house to explain what happened. Being a far more open minded man and far more liberal, he disowned his own child and took Leah in as his own, and decided to move from Ireland to the United States to further distance them from the horrible people that were Leah’s parents.

Orrin was a skilled hunter, and not being able to leave a young Leah by herself, he decided to take her with him. Leah took an interest in hunting, and Orrin started teaching her--and much to his surprise, Leah took the lessons extremely well, and within just a few years, was a master hunter that surpassed even his own skills. They even traveled to Australia and Africa for some legal hunting.

However, Orrin was old, and he eventually passed away from old age when Leah was sixteen. Saddened but not discouraged, Leah started hunting game to make a profit as a survival tactic.

Eventually, Leah was called by a secret service of the government and taken into custody to be given an offer. A huge sum of money for using her hunting skills for an assassination--a very corrupt man who dealt with human trafficking, terrorism, and other criminal activities that made him too dangerous. However, every previous assassination attempt lead to failure due to the men and woman being official government figures and there being a rat in the government. They needed someone who could pull off the assassination who was unsuspecting and didn’t have a face int he underground criminal ring. Leah hesitantly accepted the offer.

She was sent to Australia for her target, since he was on a vacation there with his family. It was a very simple job, in actuality, and she used a sniper rifle in the wilderness to kill her target when he was having a picnic break with his family after stalking him for several nights. Unfortunately, Leah may have mentally prepared for his death and telling herself he deserved it for being such a monster, but she didn’t mentally prepare herself for the family’s reaction to his assassination. Leah went home that very same night with the screams still ringing in her ears.

A few months later, Leah learned that the wife of the corrupted man had killed her two children and then herself. As much as Leah tried, she couldn’t get the incident out of her head, and she decided to hunt some deer to distract herself from it, only to shoot a deer and it’s cry immediately triggering her. Immediately after the incident with the deer, Leah realized all at once that she was ending lives, killing creatures with families and futures that she stole away, and in her grief and trauma, Leah became completely vegan and vouched to never hunt again, nor kill any living, breathing creature.

A month later, Leah received an invitation from the American Hope’s Peak to be “The Ultimate Hunter”. With no job or any way to make money, Leah had no choice but to accept, but the title was more like a huge slap in the face than an honor to have.
