so, i had seen a lot of people saying that xavier only loves queen mc, but after reading his 3rd anecdote, i’d beg to differ.
there is a quote in there where he says “no matter how many times it takes, no matter where you are… i will find you.”
to xavier, mc is both hunter and queen. there is no difference. even if mc were to have another life, xavier will still see her as the same person, the love of his life basically. and no matter how many lives it may take, he will go through anything and everything to find her and be with her in some way.
also, his relationship from queen mc evidently carried over to hunter mc. remember in his myth where she was in a duel with xavier before he was taken away and jeremiah came up to talk to her, but when xavier returned and saw jeremiah’s arm around mc, xavier clearly was pouting and even told him basically to stay in his own lane. then we have hunter mc who jeremiah was measuring her figure in order to create an outfit to fit her fake role only for xavier to deadass spray water at him like a misbehaving dog saying that she can do it herself.
i know damn well jeremiah had a ball in both instances, he just enjoys provoking xavier whenever possible.
his jealousy shows the same whether queen mc or hunter mc, perhaps he learned from his mistake before, but his efforts with hunter mc seems more like ‘i’ve made this mistake before, i won’t allow it to happen again’. because, if it were truly only for queen mc, then why would xavier go out of his way for hunter mc; when mc lost caleb and josephine, how she felt lonely and xavier told her about snowflakes falling on loved one’s shoulders by their passed loved ones. or even the most recent cards such as ‘romantic afternoon’ and ‘succumb’  as well as his 4* memories altogether.
for someone who is coined as the one who only loves and cares for one version of a woman…he sure treats hunter mc a lot better than he did with queen mc. but, i still stand on this hill that xavier loves mc, no matter what version she is. also something i want to add, man is old, he’s been traveling space to and fro, he would never waste his time on someone he didn’t genuinely want to be around or simply be with.
when i say it transcends, this is legit what i mean.
Tumblr media
to him, queen mc is right there with him, once made to be his knight, now hunting and defeating wanderers side by side.
also for @ly-pleiades because she asked to peek into my thoughts about xavier and such and i am happy to deliver what i can

Exhaustion
Love and Deepspace Headcanons - You're so tired, all you want to do is sleep and go to see them. They're in the same situation.
A/N: Canonically, in the game we have a motorcycle hence the assumption the MC has their own transportation. Assume they're wearing the proper protective gear and that it's easy to get off XD (Though I know biker gear can be quite hard to actually take off. Just go with it pls lol) Brought to you by me being tired as hell, and thinking it would be nice to be able to go to someone and rest. ^J^
Tags/Warnings: Fluff, exhaustion, loneliness.

Work had been rather grueling, long, and tedious, all in one, and there was still more to do. Sighing internally, you shot off a text in order to sadly, cancel the plans you had to visit. It looked like you'd have to stay at least an extra 10 hours, due to extremely unforeseen and urgent circumstances for the Hunter's Association.
Tumblr media
Your final message felt inadequate to convey the warmth and happiness you felt knowing that he wanted to see you as much as you wanted to see him. Bolstered, the rest of the shitshow was just a bit easier to deal with as you had something to look forward to.
Wind whipping around you, the ride was something you needed. The sense of freedom, the speed, the music and the lights all gave you a sense of solace as you headed towards your destination.

Xavier
You appreciated the irony as the elevator passed your floor and stopped at his. As you approached his door, you finally let yourself feel the exhaustion weighing down on you. Your body felt heavier, and it took more effort to move. Sleepiness hovered just beyond consciousness, and you fought it off. Looking at your watch, you sigh. 3:07, your estimate had been right on the money.
Still, despite how tired you were, you did want to see Xavier, even if this visit would probably just amount to you sleeping over.
Knocking to make Xavier aware of your arrival, you're just about to enter the door code, when it opens and Xavier stands before you, his arms open for a hug.
Wordlessly, you accept his invitation, hugging him tightly. His embrace is firm, warm and comforting and you can't help but relax into him.
"I thought you'd be asleep." You murmur softly, hugging him just as tightly.
"I woke up when I heard your bike." He nuzzles his face into your neck. "It's the signal for your arrival after all." Reluctantly, he breaks the embrace as you pull away to take off your shoes and put your satchel, helmet and jacket on one of the hooks. He makes his way back to his bed, turning to look at you as you follow, undressing down to your underwear.
Collapsing into the soft blankets, you burrow under the sheets with him. Xavier carefully, gently adjusts your position so you lay against him, your head resting on his arm, your back against his chest. Together, you drift off to sleep.

Sylus
Unsurprisingly, he met you at the entrance to Onychinus Headquarters
"Sweetie, I would have preferred picking you up." Sylus takes your helmet and satchel from you, handing them off to the twins to deal with. "How rude of them to overwork you like this." Normally, you'd respond in kind, a fun playful exchange that flowed naturally. But frankly, you were too tired to really talk.
He gazed at you, taking everything about you in, and after he did so all he did was wordlessly kneel down and support you as he took off your shoes. "You look exhausted, Kitten. Let me help you." Sylus slips your jacket off your shoulders
Providing support, he guides you towards his room. You're absolutely sure that if he thought you'd allow it, he'd pick you up and carry you, but he didn't. You appreciated it as you much prefer to walk on your own, when you can. "I took the time to fluff your pillow
You may be tired, so much so that its obvious that once you relax you'll fall alseep, but you are very good at ignoring it, soldiering though until your body decides to force sleep.
How lucky it is then, that you can go to Sylus and rest, before it comes to that.
Ultimately, you crawl onto Sylus's bed and collapse, and he's not far behind, climbing in with you despite his wonky sleep schedule.
He faces you, pulling your head into his chest and your body flush against him as you both drift off for some much needed sleep. You feel safe and relaxed with his arms around you.

Zayne
Unfortunately, this was a more common occurrence than either of you would like. Both of your jobs were quite intense and often required long hours.
Still, you both made a conscious effort to make time for each other, even if it ended up being strange hours sometimes. The times he got home before you were not rare, but infrequent, and this was one of these time.
Taking of your gear and shoes as you entered his home, you hoped that he was at least resting, hopefully asleep. It was something he deserved, and right now all you wanted to do was rest with him.
A warm glow cascaded over the room, making you smile. Zayne had left a light on for you.
Padding softly through the foyer, you quietly open the door to his room, making sure the light from outside doesn't disturb him. Much to your relief, Zayne was sleeping peacefully, his handsome face relaxed. He had an unguarded quality about him that you rarely saw.
A rush of affection suddenly overcame you. Carefully, you went over to him and kissed his forehead. As you withdrew, you felt him grab your hand, his eyes still closed. "Stay here" he murmured, his voice gentle and low, hazy with sleep as his hand falls from yours.
You move over to your side, ensconcing yourself in bed, growing cozy and warm with him next to you.
He gravitates towards you, intertwining his legs with yours and nuzzling his head into your neck, and you fall asleep, your eyes gently closing as you're tangled together comfortably.

Rafayel
The solitary lamplight from Rafayel's studio illuminates the path as you walk up to his door. Although he had given you a key, you knock gently, just in case Rafayel was absorbed in his art.
A small clatter sounds after you knock, and you can't help but feel amused despite the haze of tiredness dulling your senses.
When he opens the door, a playful, soft smile pulls at his lips. "I don't suppose you have any news of my wayward companion?" He steps aside and helps you with your gear and shoes.
"Hmmm I think I have some news. It seems your companion has made it to their destination." Rafayel cleans up the box of paintbrushes he spilled, making sure your path is clear.
"Well! Now that they've arrived, they can't leave for a while. It's mean of them to leave me alone for so long, and so often." His pout is playful, his eyes focused on you as he intertwines his fingers in yours, holding your hand gently, as if it was some priceless thing, something to be cherished and treated with care.
You squeeze his hand as the two of you make your way to his room, his bed looking like the most luxurious, comfortable place in the world despite it really just being a slightly messy, normal bed.
"As much as your wayward traveler loves to explore, I'm sure they love being here too and would always make an effort to return to you." With that, you climb onto bed, letting go of his hand, your exhaustion amplifying the soreness of your body, making every movement take extra effort. As soon as you're comfortable, you open your arms to Rafayel, who had merely just stood beside his bed as you did so.
You open your arms for him, and he joins you in bed, almost clinging to you under the covers, entangling all his limbs with yours and burying his face into your neck, head resting on your chest, near your shoulder. "I missed you." Together you drift of, feeling safe and sound with each other under the covers.

cosmic meeting - crash landing
Tumblr media
Vigilante!Mc "Cosmic" accidentally breaks into her neighbors apartment who is a hunter and should arrest her
mc x xavier
tw: injuries
Mc struggled with the window lock more than usual. She groaned when it finally opened and threw herself onto the couch. All of her body aching, a lot of injuries she should be tending to, but a much needed break was in order before she started to worry about the amount of blood and bones she lost.
The couch felt odd, more comfortable than she remembered. Maybe she was so tired that her body just accepted anything, she would be happy not to give it another thought if it wasn't for the gun suddenly pointing at her head.
Looking at the intruder through her mask, she frowned at his outfit. A casual kitty cards branded pijama, weird choice of armor. Her eyes wandered towards the coffee table, spotting a wallet with an I.D.
A hunter's I.D.
This wasn't her apartment.
The gun clicked, a clear sign of it being loaded. "Why are you here?" the owner of the apartment asked.
"Um... Apartment viewing...?"
The gun was pushed closer to her mask.
"Okay! Okay! Bad joke! I'm not a criminal, just a vigilante. I think you're my neighbor,  I broke into the wrong apartment. I mean, I'm trying to break into mine, which I know sounds really weird -"
"How do I know that's true?"
She sighed and went to remove the mask slowly. "I'm MC, I live in apartment 301, I think we moved in around the same time," she smiled akwardly.
The man sighed, unloading the gun and putting it down on the coffee table.
"I'm Xavier. Vigilante activity is forbidden in Linkon. As a hunter, it is my duty to turn you in. "
"Woah! Settle down, pretty boy! I'm not doing bad stuff. If anything, I'm helping you out." she stated matter of factly.
Xavier looked at the woman on his couch, actively bleeding onto it and most likely permanently staining it. Maybe he was too tired, or maybe it was the slightly flirtatious way she spoke, but he decided to let her go for now.
"...Fine."
"Thank you! Now, I caused you enough trouble, so I'll be out of your hair. " The vigilante went to stand up, but xavier held her down. "You're bleeding."
MC was about to dismiss his comment until she realized that the soft surface she was laying on was supposed to be pure white.
"OH MY GOD, IM SO SORRY ABOUT YOUR COUCH. I'LL BUY YOU A NEW ONE-"
"It's fine. That's a big wound. Let me get my first aid kit. " he stood up, leaving her alone for a bit.
What the hell was happening?? First, she was so out of it that she broke into the wrong apartment, didn't even try to escape, and then revealed her identity? She'd been in several similar gun-to-head situations before, but she had never reacted like this. MC looked down at the wound and the sofa again, cringing at the likely high price of the furniture.
Before she could dwell on her financial situation further, her neighbor emerged from the corridor with the first aid kit and quickly started assessing her most obvious wounds. A comfortable silence fell between the two of them. Some alcohol stings and a few stitches later, the man retreated to put away the medical equipment.
Mc slowly sat up from the couch, grunting a bit due to her injuries as she gathered her mask. "I'll... come by later to get your details to pay you back for the couch. I'm sorry again."
"Don't worry about it, it was in bad condition anyway." Bad condition?? that was the best surface she had ever laid on. if the smell of blood wasn't so strong, she'd be happy to take it home. "Try to stay out of trouble and not force yourself so much for a few days, dont want your wounds to open."
"Let me pay you back with dinner then?"
"Sure. I'd like that. See you around cosmic"
MC smiled at her codename and climbed out the window. Once she finally reached her apartment, she changed out of her dirty suit and fell into her bed, giggling.

Random, kind of silly thoughts I've been having
What if someone makes King/Oscar a little conductor's hat/outfit for him to wear? Would he like wearing that?
I feel like Luz/Luna would sneak off to hang out with the engines at Tidmouth sheds at night and be found sleeping in one of their cabs in the morning at least once (probably Gordon's cab)
Is Mr. Conductor tiny in OTH, and if so, does Hunter end up being smol in shining time too?
Imagine a monster engines/Children of Sodor combined au, where it's all the same but they're all monster engines :)
...And then imagine that combined with OTH/hj
Or OTH and COS combined
I like thinking about combined aus don't mind me lol
(Anon Orange)
Sometimes he and his big sister like to join in on runs for the express (for two kids that have been raised around trains, there's no better cure for boredom) so I like to think they have little outfits to match whatever they're helping out with.
She ABSOLUTELY has. Her brother too. Luna has a good life but it's hard being a young teenager and junk, and the engines are all very good and paitent listeners when it comes to her, so she goes to them often when she just wants to get away from things. She'd do it tons when she was little, scared the hell out of her parents (especially when she brought Oscar along) but she luckily never got hurt or anything on the way there. The engines that work late keep an eye out for her here and there.
I've had thoughts abt this next one for a while and tbh the answer is I'm not really sure at the moment? I suppose Mr. Conductor and Junior would still be small, but I think Hunter would apply by the same rules humans do as he's biologically the same as a human, but with the gold dust Hunter does have the ability to go into MC's home. He just has a room in the station for when he wants to fully by himself. I imagine MC and his cousin are very much a different species despite looking fully human. This also means Hunter can carry his big brother on his shoulder when they're in Shining Time and I think that's great tbh.
I have thought abt an AEG based monster engine AU before. Some of my favorite thoughts include steamers carrying littler steamers by their funnels, little baby machines teething on random metals and also play fighting like kittens, and like...you know the thing red pandas do where they stand up with their paws in their air to try and be scary? Baby monster machines would do that.

song rec: hypnotic by zella day | if you let me by sinedad harnett | love me up by etta bond | crave by tove lo
"You want me to what?!"
"Come on, there are worse things," Taeyong tried talking you down.
"I'd rather Lilith drag me to hell herself."
"Okay, now you're just being dramatic. Haechan's not that bad."
"Oh, no, he's just an annoying, pompous asshole."
"I-" before he could get in another word, you cut him off.
"Why can't you just send Sungchan? He's one of the newbies. The experience will be good for him anyway."
"I sent him and Shotaro to Oregon with Yuta to take care of a crossroads demon."
"Jaehyun?"
"Vampire nest in France with Jeno."
"Renjun?"
"Shapeshifter in Morocco."
"Kun?"
"On vacation," Taeyong sighed. "Look, you two are some of the best hunters I know, and I really need you on this case. Both of you."
You knew you couldn't keep standing here bitching over this when the real problem was still at large. People were still getting hurt, and you couldn't let your feelings of anguish toward him get in the way of your job.
You rolled your eyes before sighing, "When do we leave?"
"Been waiting on you."
Looking over your shoulder, you glare at the man standing in the doorway of the room designated to be Taeyong's office. Haechan smirked at you before winking. You scoff, turning back to Taeyong.
"You're gonna owe me," you tell him.
"Wouldn't have asked if I wasn't expecting to," he handed you the file, "Safe trip, you two," Taeyong smiled.
"We're leaving in fifteen," you told Haechan, "And we're taking my car."
Haechan held up his hands like he wasn't gonna argue with you about that, which was surprising, but you quickly brushed past it and Haechan out of the room.
"Haechan." Taeyong called him before he left, "Please don't kill each other and make it back in one piece."
"No promises," Haechan said before leaving.
. . .
The first hour was filled with tense silence between the two of you. Every time Haechan tried to start a conversation, you would shut him down, not wanting to hear anything he had to say.
It wasn't until he picked up the file from Taeyong sitting on your dashboard did you finally let him get some words in since he was actually saying something helpful.
"Says there have been four victims in the last five weeks."
"All the same motive?"
"Yeah, all four of them were drained of their blood. Completely."
"Vampires?"
"No teeth marks were found. So, it's no looking likely."
"Any connection between the victims?"
"No, not that I can tell. Aside from living in the same area code, none of these people had anything in common."
"Great, this makes our job much easier. What about a vengeful spirit? Or demon?"
"Could be. But can't say for sure until we get there."
Haechan closed the file and threw it into the backseat.
He sunk into the passenger's seat, about to change the song playing on the radio before you slapped his hand away.
"My car, my music."
Haechan sucked his teeth, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Fine. I was gonna try to take a nap anyway."
"Whatever gets you to stop talking."
Glaring over at you one last time, Haechan shifts in the passenger's seat, turning his back to you and shutting his eyes.
Hours have passed, and you've been driving on the dark road with no cars ahead or behind you for miles now. The only thing accompanying you in the darkness was the low hum of music coming from the speakers and Haechan's soft snores.
It didn't even register you had been driving for so long until you started seeing the sun rising from behind the horizon.
Haechan woke up with a stiff neck to find the car at a stop, and you were no longer inside with him. Taking in his surroundings, Haechan realized you had stopped for gas.
You were so spaced out you almost didn't hear him getting out of the car, the slamming of the door bringing your attention to him.
You looked over at the Gemini, stretching his arms over his head with a yawn.
"How much longer do we have to go?" Haechan asks.
"Three more hours."
"Okay, you should let me drive," He tells you.
"No-"
"You've been driving all night. It won't do any good if you fall asleep at the wheel and kill us before we can even get there."
He's right. It irks you, having to admit he's right.
You took the pump out of the tank once it was filled and closed the hatch.
You held out your keys, Haechan ready to take them, but you retracted your hand before he could.
"Be gentle with her. This is my baby."
"Baby," he scoffs, "You know I can be gentle when I wanna be," he says, taking your keys and getting into the driver's side.
You were blaming your lack of sleep on the way his words had an effect on you.
You shook the thoughts away and got back into the car, your eyes shutting almost instantly before Haechan could even pull out of the gas station.
. . .
"Oh, you gotta be fucking with me."
Now, this was an upgrade from your usual shitty motels. There was a couch a full bathroom, a minibar, and a queen-sized bed. One queen-sized bed.
And you have no doubt in mind who was probably responsible for this.
"I'm gonna fucking kill Johnny," you mutter.
"Get in line."
You were expecting to have to flip a coin or something.
"You can take the bed. I'll be fine with the couch," Haechan says, settling his things down.
"Suit yourself," you said happily dropping your things and heading towards the bed practically calling your name.
"I'm gonna shower. Then we can head over to the coroner's office?"
"Fine with me. Wake me if I'm not up in an hour." you say resting your head on the pillow.
The bathroom door closed, and you got comfortable on the bed. It wasn't the most comfortable mattress, the bed springs digging into your back, but you've had worse, so you weren't gonna complain. The sound of the water running was the last thing you remember hearing before your eyes fluttered shut, and you drifted off to sleep again.
. . .
You walked out of the morgue, thoroughly annoyed. And feeling Haechan's unbothered presence was pissing you off even more.
Bad enough that Mark thought it would be a funny enough fucking joke to give you fake badges with the same last name, leading the coroner to assume you were married. And instead of correcting her, Haechan thought it would also be funny to play along and act as if you were.
So while you were actually working, examining the bodies, and trying to figure out what was responsible for the deaths of those four people, Haechan was talking up your fake five-year marriage on the spot with the coroner. You know he's good at this part of the job, but there's no reason for him to be this good.
Haechan loosens his tie walking in tow with you back to your car after you finish your questioning.
"See, that wasn't so bad," Haechan says, and you roll your eyes at him. "Alright, when are you gonna pop this hate boner you have for me?" he asks.
You scoff, "Whenever that big ass ego of yours deflates."
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?"
"Like you don't fucking know," you mutter.
"Yeah, I fucking don't. So why don't you stop acting like a pouty little brat and just tell me."
You didn't say anything, and Haechan sighed.
"I thought you said you weren't mad about that."
"I'm not but that doesn't mean I have to like you after you did it."
"It was two years ago!"
"And it was fucked up. But it's funny enough you keep showing up whenever you think I'm in need of saving."
"Need I remind you I am the one who quite literally saved you from being that werewolf's late night snack?"
You grumble at him under your breath, walking away.
He tries to keep up with your steps, following you to the car.
"Look, I'm sorry," he said, and you finally stopped, "For everything. I didn't mean to shut you out. I was just...scared," he admits
"Of what? I thought we were both very clear about where we stood."
"And I still cared about you. You know what it's like getting close to something in this line of work," Haechan tells you, "And I wasn't just gonna let you die for the sake of your own ego. You're too good of a hunter for us to lose."
You didn't even think you still held this much anger towards him until now. You didn't want to anymore, seemingly taking this long to get over it. And it would make this job a lot less painful if you weren't stuck thinking about the past.
"Don't try to flatter me now, Donghyuck." You say, a phantom smirk playing on your lips. "You're still an annoying, pompous asshole," you say.
Haechan snickers, putting his hands in his pockets and walking up to you.
"And you're a heartless, whiny little brat," he smirked at your offended expression. He then stepped back and asked, "Wanna grab breakfast?" quickly changing the subject.
"You really wanna eat now?"
"Can't work on an empty stomach," Haechan says, "I'll buy," he offers.
"Fine. But, after, we're going to the crime scenes."
"Yes, Mrs," Haechan teases, laughing when you shoot him another death glare.
. . .
"You okay?" Haechan asks as he enters the run-down house.
"Yeah," you shake the unsettling feeling and follow in behind him, "We're getting close."
"But we still have time. We just need to find her heart and kill her. Simple."
Yeah, simple.
The one thing you hate about witches is how difficult they make it to hunt them. Using glamour spells to appear as whoever they want or hexing five random people as a part of some ritualistic sacrifice trying to raise something much more malicious back from the dead. They're always unpredictable.
"I'll check upstairs," you tell him.
Haechan nods, heading towards the living room to check the first floor, "Hey, Haechan."
"Yeah?" he turns around.
"Don't be stupid and get yourself killed," you say.
He nods again with a smirk, "You too."
Reaching the top of the stairs, you held up your shotgun as you crept down the halls, carefully checking every room you passed. The floorboards croaked under your weight with each step you took.
It was deathly silent; your ears started to ring. You couldn't even hear Haechan downstairs as you reached the end of the hallway.
You pushed the last door open with the barrel of your gun and started looking around. Different plants and herbs were scattered all over the room, and you made sure to stay a safe distance away, not sure what some of them were.
When you found the room was clear, you lowered your weapon and looked around, finding a book that you could only assume was her grimoire, opened to a page.
Careful flipping through the pages, you find the ritual she was trying to perform, only needing a few more things, including one last victim, before it's complete.
Supplies and ingredients were laid out all over the table, most of the things looking unfamiliar since she was using an older method of magic.
Among the items, a box unlocked. The box holding the witch's heart.
"Now, who's the heartless one," you mumble.
"That one's still up for debate," the voice sent a chill down your spine.
You turn around, aiming your gun, but it's too late.
In her true form, thin skin stretched across the witch's face, baring rotting teeth. You could barely see anything else as she wore a tattered black cloak, the hood covering most of her face.
She grabbed the barrel with long bony fingers, making you miss your shot, and shot the wall behind her instead. Before you could reload, she held out her hand, blowing the contents sitting in her palm in your face.
A floral scent invaded your senses, and your nose felt tingly as you inhaled whatever powder she possessed.
You heard the sound of Haechan calling your name, his footsteps rushing to your location as your body hit the floor.
"You both have been very entertaining to watch. You looking at him when he's not paying attention, and him looking at you once you turn away. Ugh! it's just someing about the secret pining that gets me everytime. So beautiful yet…so painful," the witch looks off dramatically into the distance, "But don't worry now, child. I have freed you of your misery." she speaks, smiling widely.
Before Haechan could get a shot, she moved faster than you'd expect, and she's a lot stronger than you's think for a few centuries-old witch.
"Haechan," you weakly called his name.
He was quickly disarmed and he couldn't seem to be able to move.
"Ah, I get what all the fuss is about. He's even cuter up close. I might save him for myself," the witch wickedly grinned, "You'd make a perfect vessel," she caressed Haechan's face.
Her skeletal fingers wrapped around Haechan's throat, squeezing his airway.
Using all the strength you could muster, you reached for the box with her heart. She fell to the ground, weakly crawling toward you to try and stop you as the shard of glass in your hand pierced through the rotted tissue. She cursed at you as she wailed out in agony.
"You'd do it too, for love," was the last thing she said before burning to ashes.
"Call us even now," you teased Haechan before you toppled in pain.
"You okay?" Haechan rushes to your side.
"No, something's very wrong. It hurts," you whine.
"What? Where?"
"Everywhere. I don't know what the fuck she did to me."
"Okay. We gotta get you outta here," Haechan slung your arm around his neck, helping you to your feet.
You clung onto Haechan, stumbling over your feet, leaving the house with Haechan's arm around you, keeping you upright.
You squirmed in the passenger's seat, the pain getting even worse.
"Haechan, I can't. Everthing fucking hurts," you cry.
Haechan's knuckles turned white from how hard he gripped the wheel, applying more pressure to the gas, rushing back to your hotel.
You felt like you were burning inside out while simultaneously being stabbed. Yet you were thinking about how hot Haechan looked. Maybe the end is near.
Haechan's face was set in a hard line, his jaw clenched as he did about 30 over the speed limit. You found your eyes drifting over to him, distracting yourself for a moment. Haechan's sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, the muscles in his arms rippling under his skin as he held onto the steering wheel. From the dark brown strands falling over his eyes to the jeans hugging his thighs so deliciously you couldn't resist the urge to press your thighs together.
Your pain subsided for only a second before you shook those thoughts from your head, and your nerves returned to screaming in agony.
Haechan could care less about how badly he parked the car before running over to your side and helping you out of the car, rushing you into the hotel. Thankfully it was late, and no one was in the lobby other than the receptionist you slipped past without detection.
The moment you entered your room, you pushed Haechan away and locked yourself in the bathroom. You were taking a cold shower to bring your temperature back down, but you couldn't shake the thoughts of Haechan out of your mind. How good he smelled, how his body felt against yours with you tucked into his side, the genuine concern he showed for you-
You didn't even realize you had your hand between your thighs until you finally felt relief, stroking your clit. You bit your lip, trying to conceal any moans threatening to spill out of your lips. You desperately rubbed your clit, feeling the strongest need for release right now.
Your eyes were closed, and all you envisioned behind closed eyelids were Haechan. His face, his voice—everything was overwhelming.
You were already so close to cumming, as you thought of Haechan's fingers instead of your own.
You scraped your nails down the tiled walls, that knot inside you so close to breaking. Until you heard a knock on the door.
"You okay in there?" Haechan asks from the other side.
You snap out of it, opening your eyes as guilt and pain washed over you.
You cleared your throat, "Yeah. I'll be out in a second," you yelled to him.
The shower only helped temporarily. You were lying on the bed, half-naked, a thin layer of sweat covering your entire body.
You tried to wait for Haechan to come back after getting off the phone and hopefully with a solution to this. You were exhausted but still in too much pain to even try sleeping.
Your body jolted, alert once again, hearing the door slamming.
"Haechan?"
He didn't hear you calling his name as he flipped through the pages of the witch's grimoire you snagged from the house before leaving. Once Haechan stopped turning through the book, his eyes bounced around the page, reading whatever was written.
"Haechan?" you call him again.
He tore his eyes away from the page and met your gaze.
"What is it?" you ask.
For once, it seemed Haechan was at a loss for words. And his silence was beginning to scare you.
"Haechan, please just tell me," you pleaded.
He sighs, "If it's what Jaemin think's it is, it was phoenix's blossom she hit you with. It's pretty high grade and usually associated with spells of desire."
You thought this information would've clarified at least a few things, but you were more confused, leaving you with even more questions than answers.
"Okay, then why the hell does it feel like I'm dying?"
"The neglect of the heart's desires will ignite the eternal fires from within. Scorching the soul along with it," he read from the pages.
Fuck me.
You manage to roll out of bed and over to the minibar, pouring yourself a shot of whiskey.
If you're going to die before you're 30, you're going to at least have one last drink if it really is the end.
It was like you could feel Haechan's eyes on you as you poured another drink, the alcohol not being enough to eliminate your pain but numb it enough that it became bearable for you.
You didn't even notice Haechan had moved until he was standing next to you, pouring himself a drink.
He didn't say anything, just sipping on the amber liquid, carefully watching you. He looked at you blankly, and you couldn't tell what he was thinking. You were only starting to focus on how much prettier he looks up close.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" you ask him, annoyed with the wordless staring.
"What are you thinking?"
You scoff before downing the rest of your drink without as much as a wince, "What am I thinking? How pissed I am some old hag got the jump on me like this. How I'm gonna haunt Taeyong's ass from beyond the grave. How I'm never getting those twenty bucks Chenle still owes me." you half-joked.
The feeling of Haechan's fingers reaching out for your hand made you finally meet his eyes.
You sighed, "How angry it makes me to look at your face sometimes. How bad I wish things didn't get so fucked up because you were still my friend," you didn't notice he was slowly pulling you closer, "And how badly I miss the way you used to touch me."
He cupped your face, staring into your eyes.
"Stop looking at me like that."
"Why should I?"
"Cause I'm tired of looking at your stupid face," you didn't try too hard to push him away.
Your skin burns under his touch when Haechan grabs your waist, "Ah. Was this the same stupid face you were thinking about when you were trying to get off in the shower?"
Haechan teased you when embarrassment took over your face.
"You think I don't remember what you sound like even when you so desperately try to keep quiet."
Haechan cups your jaw, bringing your face closer.
"You don't think I miss the pretty noises you'd make for me."
You could feel the flood of arousal throughout your body, his voice sending a shiver down your spine.
Haechan's eyes are dark, and when you bring your hand to his cheek, you feel how warm his skin is compared to yours.
"Haechan, you're-"
"I know," was all Haechan said.
The residue of the phoenix's blossom on his clothes was evidence enough.
"This shit feels like poison coursing through my veins. And it is unbearably fucking hot in here. But I can't seem to pull myself away for you," Haechan pulled you flush against him.
"I wanna hear you say it," you stop him with your finger on his lips.
"I want you so bad, it's killing me," he said light-heartedly.
With that, your lips were on his.
You wrapped your arms around his neck, weaving your fingers in his hair. You moaned into his mouth when he pressed your body into the bar behind you.
You swipe your tongue along the seam of his lips, tangling with his before fighting for dominance. Haechan's hands were all over your body. He cupped your breasts over your bra, softly rubbing your sensitive nipples through the material, making you moan against his lips. You push the both of you away from the bar, Haechan blindly leading you to the bed.
His legs hit the bed, and you push him down onto the springy mattress, climbing on top of him. Haechan's hands guided your hips, grinding into his cock, your shorts, and his jeans being the only thing between you. His hands kneaded your ass firmly as you dragged your hips against his.
"Hyuck," you breathe his name. Haechan groans, even more blood rushing to his dick from the way his name sounded rolling off your tongue.
You started pulling on Haechan's shirt until you got it over his head and off his body, now lying on the floor. You trail your lips down his jaw, nipping his skin between his teeth, leaving openmouthed kisses on the side of his neck. Haechan slid his hand over the curve of your ass, sliding up your back, reaching for the clasp on your bra. He couldn't keep his hands off you. Haechan flipped you onto your back before he slipped one of your nipples into his mouth, flicking the perky bud with the tip of his tongue. You arch into Haechan's touch, his saliva covering your areola as he gives the same attention to the opposite one.
Haechan starts kissing down your body. He sinks his teeth into your skin, taking in how responsive you are to him.
Placing one last kiss on your hip, Haechan hooks his fingers in the waistband of your shorts, tearing them down your legs along with your soaked panties.
Haechan's intense gaze made you want to close your legs out of embarrassment, but he didn't allow them, keeping them apart with his hands. He runs a finger through your folds, coating his fingers in your slick.
Your hips instantly lift against his hand, and he takes amusement in the way you pouted when he drew his hand away.
"Fuck you," you whine.
"We're getting there, baby. Patience." Haechan doesn't hesitate to bring his fingers to his lips, licking your essence off his hand.
He hums, savoring the taste of you on his tongue. You could've sworn you watched his eyes grow darker; you could barely tell they were brown anymore.
"Taste as good as I remember, angel," Haechan licks his lips.
Bringing his hand back between your thighs, Haechan sinks two fingers into your cunt, easily breaching your walls from how wet you are. Moans bubbled up in your throat, the feeling of his fingers curling against your gummy walls eliminating the excruciating pain you were in.
You grab onto his wrist, rolling your hips into his hand.
"Haechan..please fuck me."
A sound resembling a growl rumbled in his chest, hearing you beg for him.
You pathetically whined when Haechan left you empty and untouched as he started to take off the last thing he was wearing. Kicking his jeans off, letting his boxers be the last to join the rest of the clothes on the floor, Haechan strokes his cock in his hand. Your mouth waters as you press your thighs together at the sight of him.
"You know it's been a minute, baby, and I haven't properly prepped you. Think you can take it?" he teases.
You wrap your hand around his length, squeezing your fist around him, making him curse lowly.
"Can you?" you raise an eyebrow.
Haechan pushes you back onto your back, giving you no warning before slamming into you.
"Oh, my fucking god, Hyuck!" you cried, your nails painfully digging into his shoulders.
"You're so wet—shit. Pussy feels so fucking good." Haechan groaned, thrusting into you.
You roughly grabbed his hair, smashing your lips into his, and Haechan's pace started to pick up. He dropped his head to watch his cock slip into your heat easily, every time he eased out of you just to fill you up to the hilt again.
Haechan sat back on his haunches, still fucking into your messy pussy. Haechan was in awe of the sight beneath him. The way you tried to move your hips to match his movements but had a hard time keeping up because of the pleasure fogging up your mind.
With his hands still on your waist, Haechan pulled you up to sit in his lap, sinking down even further on his cock.
You threw your head back, moaning shamelessly. You held onto him, gyrating your hips against his. Haechan grabbed your ass, lifting you up before letting you sink back down, the tip of his cock brushing your sweet spot.
"You're so hot," Haechan's eyes were glossed over as he looked at you. Your walls clenched around him tightly, humming in agreement as you studied his face.
You gripped his chin between your fingers, squishing his cheeks together before you planted a kiss on his lips.
"I want—I need more. Please, Haechan," you pant against his lips.
The corners of his lips curled up mischievously. Haechan pushed you back onto the bed, leaving you empty. He then manhandled you onto your hands and knees. You kept your hips raised in the air as he easily slipped back in, bottoming out. You moaned into the sheets, gripping them, feeling Haechan's cock stretch you in the most delicious ways.
"Fuck, angel," he rasped.
Haechan's fingers gripped your body, bruisingly tight as you matched his rhythm and moved your hips, your skin meeting in sharp slaps each time. Haechan grabbed your ass, spreading your cheeks and watching your sopping pussy swallow his cock. You could feel the slick dripping down your thighs, probably making a mess on Haechan as well.
"You feel so fucking good, Hyuck," your words were muffled by bedding beneath you.
"Poor baby. So desperate to cum," he started stroking your clit, making you squirm. "Good thing you have me to help make you feel better," he pressed a kiss below your jaw.
"Unfortunately, you're the only thing that can," you tease.
Haechan scoffs as if he took real offense to those words. But oh, was it the best decision you've made all night.
He forced your head back into the pillows, deepening your back's arch and fucking you relentlessly.
"Yes, yes, yes. P-Please—Haechan!"
"You feel that? How good I'm making you feel. Have I already fucked you dumb, sweetheart?" he said in a condescending tone, "What was it you said before?" he asked. Haechan knew you didn't have half a mind to think about anything from even two seconds ago, too consumed in the euphoric feeling of him blowing your back out.
"Hyuck..." was all you could say, and he proudly smiled.
"That's right, baby. Say my name. Remind yourself who's fucking you this good."
"Please, Hyuck. I'm gonna cum."
"Me too, angel." He snaked his hand down between your legs, rubbing your puffy clit.
You cried into the sheets. The sound of your ass slapping against his pelvis mixed with your muffled whines and Haechan's breathy moans.
"Let me feel that pretty pussy cum around me," he said in your ear.
Your pussy had a vice grip on his cock, nearing the edge. Your walls pulsed around his length, your legs shaking from the intensity of your orgasm.
"Haechan, Haechan, Haechan," you chanted his name, riding out the wave of euphoria.
If it wasn't for Haechan still holding your hips up, your body would have collapsed to the bed. He kept pounding into your heat, your pussy enveloping his cock as he fucked his cum into you.
You whined, feeling overstimulation begin to overtake you, but Haechan continued to lazily thrust into you. His cum started to leak out of you, dripping down his length and your thighs.
Haechan's cock finally went soft, leaving you empty, the sticky white substance now coating your folds and inner thighs.
Haechan rolled you over onto your back, looking into your glassy eyes. The tension filling the room was only accompanied by your heavy breathing.
You brushed his hair out of his eyes before slapping him across the face. Haechan cursed and rubbed his stinging cheek.
"Sorry," you apologized, "Had to make sure."
"Well?"
"Spell's broken," you tell him, sitting up.
"How do you know?"
"Cause I can go back to feeling like I hate you without being in pain again."
Haechan laughs, "You still hate me?"
"Maybe just a little less," you smile before you kiss him. Haechan wasn't expecting it, but he kissed you back immediately.
"Thank you."
"Are you sure I'm not already dead and in heaven?"
You laughed, "I'm pretty sure."
. . .
"You sure you're okay?" Jaemin asks over the phone.
"Yeah."
"And Haechan?"
You heard Haechan singing in the shower and bit back a smile.
"He's fine too," you say. "You think the witch knew what she was doing?"
"Of course, she did. She could probably sense the sexual tension between you two the moment you were in town."
"What are you saying? That that was her own twisted way of playing matchmaker?"
"She's a pretty powerful love witch, that's pretty much her specialty."
"If I didn't know any better, I would think you guys sent us here on purpose."
"We did. Just so you guys reconcile whatever was going on between you. But none of us thought this would've happened. You two could've died."
"But we didn't."
"Yeah, you didn't. What're you gonna do about that now anyway?"
"That is something we can figure out on the drive back."

I love your from afar series soo much!
For requests, if you want. You can ignore this if you're not interested.
I'm curious about demon hunters, should they track mc and try to use them to summon the demon lords to kill them. Lore wise what you may think their roles are, if they're the only ones that notice all the things that happen around mc.
Or just some angst on how the brothers would react to them going after mc.
Anon this prompt is like my catnip because I need you to know this is now one part of many. I have 5000 words I wrote in one night just waiting in a google doc somewhere thanks to this. I’m using this part to establish a ‘baseline’ of sorts, provide a little lore/insight into the idea of ‘demon hunters’ and those who would seek to do MC harm in the human world, while also having a brief look into the reverse effects of 'From Afar' - what it means for the brothers to tie themselves so tightly around MC. I hope you enjoy! 💛
Solomon, After
After The Incident, Solomon takes the time to sit you down and properly explain the world you now walk in - the one that knows of Devildom, of hell and its demons, but doesn’t view it with the same love that you have come to know.
There are sorcerers. None like him, of course, but those who use innate magic to bend instances of reality to their will. They would be more interested in the services they could gain from pacts with powerful demons, than anything you could do yourself.
Witches borrow the magics of the earth, of demons, and of the divine to cast spells. The line, you learn, between what is ‘divine’ and what is ‘demonic, is thin to the point of arbitrary.
Then there are the more organized groups - sects and factions dedicated to the eradication of corruption on Earth. Some are driven by a kind of moral righteousness. Some are driven by revenge. They have different names, or none at all. "Exorcists," he explains, "seek to remove, destroy. Hunters, meanwhile, enjoy the chase. They’ll try to capture or enslave, though there’s no telling what comes after that." There is no set of rules, no guidelines, no expectations you could make about what they would do to achieve their goals. The ends, no matter how small or inconsequential, will always justify the means. “It’s incredibly ironic,” muses Solomon, “They don’t realize the corruption they’re trying to scourge has infected their hearts so deeply. I deeply admire the brothers for that feat.” You think that last comment should make you uncomfortable. You shouldn’t feel the fondness, the pride welling in your heart.
Each of these groups (sorcerers, witches, exorcists, hunters) would have a vested interest in keeping you, controlling you, destroying you. Unfortunately, The Incident is only the first in a string of many. To be loved by beings greater than yourself is both a Blessing and a Curse. You hold reality between your fragile, mortal hands.
The Human World, Before
To assume that no one would notice, that no one would say anything, was in hindsight probably your pride talking. It starts with the flowers. Or, at least, you think it does. You’re not entirely sure.
There are all manner of mortal (and immortal) factions and organizations that seek to summon, capture, control, or destroy demons. These come from a variety of theological and theoretical backgrounds. Solomon has mentioned a few of these to you in passing, mostly to mock their incorrect assumptions and shoddy spellcasting. That isn’t to say that they’re all incompetent.
There’s a new regular at your favourite coffee shop on campus. After a few weeks of sharing the same late-night space, wordless caffeine top-ups, and panicked study sessions, you decide to strike up a conversation. Strangers aren’t so scary to you anymore - not after that Year.
He introduces himself as Jonathan. You quickly bond over the fact you’re taking the same Religious Studies class, complaining about your taskmaster lecturer. He compliments the small, budding flower you’ve tucked into the eye of your zipper, and there’s a curl of pride in your chest. You’re still getting used to the way people eye you with interest, as if you’re an object of desire. It’s somewhat refreshing that Jonathan doesn’t seem to do that. Maybe you’re not his type. “But you’re everyone’s type! I can’t imagine not wanting you, and I happen to be an expert influencer in these things,” whispers the memory of Asmo in your mind. You ignore it. Maybe you shouldn’t have.
You invite him back to your place to go over some notes. He agrees, though not too quickly to cause concern. He marvels at the flowers growing throughout the apartment, though you notice he keeps his distance, hard as that is with so many of them clinging to the decor. You turn your back to put away your coat, and - the cawing of a crow is the last thing you remember.
Devildom, During
Mammon
Mammon doesn't know what he's looking for. All he knows is he can't find it.
His room is trashed. Tables are upturned, trinkets, clothes, and treasures strewn around carelessly. It looks like someone robbed the place and someone did, someone took it, where is it, where IS IT-
When Belphegor enters his room without knocking Mammon immediately tackles him to the ground, fingers bleeding into claws, tearing at his brother's flesh. "WHERE IS IT?" he growls. Belphegor's form shifts into something less tangible, more wicked. Still, Mammon's claws scrabble to find purchase, to keep this stupid little intruder contained. It's not hard - Mammon's form engulfs the child entirely. "I have no idea what you're talking about!" cries Belphie. He tries to slip through Mammon's claws "YOU STOLE IT FROM ME! IT'S MINE!"
It's Beelzebub's turn to burst in without warning, drawn by Belphegor's own panic, and he's quickly retrained - immobilized - too. These runts are his but if they took his stuff, his treasure, then there will be hell to pay.
Eventually the noise attracts Lucifer, and he's able to get Mammon to release the twins. They don't leave the room though, watching the Avatar of Greed cautiously, worried. Mammon snaps and growls and tears at Lucifer, but none of it finds purchase, not even the selfishness, the greed that seeps from his heart, outwards. If Mammon was less concerned about what was taken from him, he'd be surprised that all Lucifer did was drop him and close the door, pulling the twins behind him. No punishment, no scolding. Just cold indifference.
Lucifer
Many people assume that the loss of pride is shame.
Lucifer knows this isn't true. To have shame at all, there must be something to take pride in. It's not something trite like humility either. No, if you're talking about a lack of pride, you're looking for Indifference.
He knows he should be more frustrated by Mammon's attack, especially against the youngest two who are the most vulnerable to his claws. Lucifer trained Mammon himself: he knows what he's capable of.
None of it matters.
Not when for all his confidence, all his experience, all that he is, it's not enough to measure up. Why bother proving himself, when it's suddenly all not enough. All that he is, and their gaze, their longing, can be oh so easily cut.
Unseen by him, one by one the lights in Devildom's sky go out. The stars hide their faces, from demons, angels and humans. In the human world, astronomers and astrologers for once actually share one same thought - a confusion about the new moon that is weeks too early. The sky goes dark on the opposite side of the planet, and the people living there marvel at the unexpected eclipse, ignoring the terror building beneath their smiles.
Lucifer shuts the door to his room, and not even the frantic messages from Diavolo break his haze.
Leviathan
His stomach is roiling, but not because of hunger or sickness.
It feels like when the last Ruri-chan dakimakura was taken from right under his nose, handed off to a smiling lesser demon. Even now, remembering the joy on that Little D's face makes his teeth ache. Or maybe it isn't the memory of that happy little bastard causing that maw to sharpen now, venom dripping from his tongue. Maybe it's something else.
He sinks into his tub, literally into it - between the cracks in the porcelain, through the hard stone floor, right down until his very being is pressed into the freezing rivers that flow beneath Devildom.
The House is too small, and here he can writhe as he wants - tail the size of a mountain range and teeth large enough to swallow the world. He curls around and around and around and yet it's not enough, whatever this feeling is. Why isn't it enough? Why isn't he satisfied?
He knows someone back at the House is calling out for him, he can hear it between his coils.
He's tempted to tighten his hold, to constrict. The devastation in Devildom would be endless. If I can't have it, no one can.
But what, if anything, is "it"? He's not Mammon - preferring quantity, with no discernment and just the need to possess it all. Rather, he covets what isn't in his grasp - even though his reach is endless. Something, someone, has slipped between his scales and out of his hold. It doesn't matter they were stolen. Leviathan's teeth ache and his stomach roils and poison drips into the earth.
Asmodeus
There's a pile of bodies in his room. Which.... is not unusual per se. Normally, though, they're a lot more alive.
It's been a long time since he's lost control like this. To take and take and take, to become everything for someone until there is nothing left outside of him. Sure, he likes being the centre of attention, the object of someone's desire. But he also likes a repeat performance, knowing he has someone on a hook he can drag and drag and drag.
Asmodeus sighs. "What a waste..." A wave of his hand reduces dead flesh to nothing, leaving behind only the usable parts. Blood flows into a vial for later use, while bones crush and remake themselves into fine ceramic adornments. He knows he should hope there wasn't anyone too important caught up in him this time, but he can't bring himself to care.
He thinks about slipping on that cute dress he bought the other day, but can't bring himself to cover his most desirable form. Not when he needs the attention, the desire. He needs their eyes on him, to become their everything- not when his edges are sharp and bleeding through, his eyes, many and soulless, peeking from between his claws and ribs, horns and tail and wings dripping with disgusting blackened desire - Asmodeus takes a deep breath. His flesh shifts and he can't force it back into shape.
No matter. He's still beautiful. They'll all watch him. He'll ensnare the entire world if it means recapturing the gaze of that one person who's been blinded to his influ- Wait. What?
Beelzebub
Beel glares at the apple. Its brilliant red skin shines back at him.
"What peed in your cereal to make you glare like that, Beel?" Levi asks, coming into the kitchen with an aura of gloom. It seems he's pulled himself back together. Beelzebub had tried to call out to him before, when he first noticed a rumbling that wasn't coming from his own stomach, but instead the foundations of Devildom itself. "I'm hungry," he grunts. Levi looks at him oddly. "Then eat something. Like that apple you're trying to kill with your mind."
Beelzebub can't think of a worse idea.
He's craving something, he knows he is. The problem is, the idea of eating, of food disgusts him. Everything looks like Solomon's cooking right now. He just needs that one thing and it'll go back to normal, the craving will go away. But he can't work out what it is.
Levi shrugs, pulling open the fridge. Without realizing, Beelzebub's hand shoots out, slamming the fridge door shut so forcefully that the entire thing rocks. Levi yelps, having only just pulled his hand out of the way just in time.
"It's not for you," Beel growls, the words forcing themselves through his throat without the consent of his heart or mind. His wings shift uneasily at his sides, aching to cut, to mark, to claim. Levi's eyes glow at being denied something he desires. Beelzebub knows deep in his being that this would be a fight he cannot win - not against the Envy that fuels the remnants left behind from his feasting. But he craves, and maybe it's food, maybe it's a fight. Its a taste on the tip of his tongue and he needs to consume.
Belphegor
"The number you are trying to call is currently unavailable. Please leave a message after the beep."
Belphegor growls in frustration before hanging up. How dare they miss his call. He had scheduled this weeks in advance. He hasn't been able to sleep for hours, and it's their voice that he knows will fix it for him. The stupid human has him all keyed up, energy shooting through his skeleton in flashes and pulses at irregular intervals. Not enough to be productive, but too much to be able to sleep. All his pillows feel like bricks - even the attic bed doesn't bring the same comfort, the smell of them still sticking to the sheets.
It's so dark, too. Perfect for sleeping.
For lack of any other solution, Belphegor seeks out Lucifer. His eldest brother has many faults and flaws, but frustratingly enough, he's still the comfiest person - besides them - he's ever fallen asleep on. Maybe it's the knowledge that he's safe in the lap of one of the strongest forces in existence. Maybe its the familiarity, the echoes of a simpler, brighter time.
The person who greets him at his brother's door is not Lucifer. Well. It is, in the sense that it's Lucifer's body and Lucifer's presence but there's nothing behind his eyes. Lucifer's pride shows itself in his love for his brothers. This love in return fuels his pride. Its a cycle that cannot be broken, strengthening the eldest as his days continue to number. Or at least, that's what Belphegor thought.
Lucifer doesn't slam the door in his face, even after Belphegor makes a crude comment about his beloved Lord Diavolo. He kind of wished he would - anything for a semblance of normal. Instead, all he receives is a blank, dead stare, like he can't be bothered - oh shit.
Belphegor drags Lucifer over to the bed, easily maneuvering the eldest into a sitting position and that's just wrong he can even do that. But he knows, better than anyone, how pliant not giving a fuck can make you. It's his whole schtick. And Lucifer's effected by it. Belphegor hasn't gotten stronger, no. It's not even a case of Lucifer weakening. His unsettled wandering to the point of sleeplessness, Lucifer's indifference, they're symptoms of a much larger, much deeper illness.
Something has gone horribly wrong.
Satan
Satan is restless. This isn’t uncommon. Normally he would spend his energy plotting to take Lucifer down a peg, but that’s not enough, not now. He’s angry and doesn’t know why and that’s not unusual either but what is strange is that he’s angry at himself. He’s barely holding onto physical form, his edges bleeding into dark, dark shadows. There’s no beating in his chest, no breath drawn into his lungs.
They all notice. There’s no way they can’t. Not after Satan disappears and they find him at the centre of a wreckage that was once the lake gazebo. There are no cuts in his flesh from the splinters, because that would mean he has flesh to be cut.
“It hurts,” he doesn’t speak, he doesn’t scream. He doesn’t say it at all, and yet they all understand.
The brothers, all watching, are grateful for Satan’s lack of physicality. They know if the Avatar of Wrath had Its usual claws, they would be tearing into Its own being.
They are the embodiment of their namesakes, for better, or for worse. They have never been in a position before in which they are at the mercy of their own Sin. And yet… This is like a disease, turning the body on itself, and yet it goes deeper than that - to their very cores, their Beings.
By loving one mortal, one among many, they are now vulnerable. They infect the hearts and minds of mankind, corrupting and destroying. Sin is self-serving. To be used selflessly, for someone else, well. That’d break reality.
Satan is the first, or more likely the most obvious, to fall prey to the backlash of that break. For his Wrath to be directed so harshly inwards? There must be some pretty strong anger, retribution, focused at-
Satan's shifting, writhing form freezes. Hell breaks loose.
This is getting a tad long so I'm gonna end it here - but I'm so inspired now to write vengeful, direct divine intervention. Thanks so much for the prompt, anon!! Let me know what you think!! 💛

So we know a lot of things about vampires and dullahans now, but what about other supernaturals? I have many questions:--- How do witches work, and the hunters too? How are the hunters able to detect supernaturals? Are they all 'gifted' with the sight, if yes then is Tachibana has the same ability? How do demons and cambions work, do they all follow Hades since he is technically the God of the Underworld?
this is indeed a lot of questions 😭 but i'll try my best to answer them.
WITCHES
witches are creatures born of blessings from hecate, goddess of magic. despite their scary reputation in the west and association with satan, most of them are peace-loving people who only want to study magic and mind their own business.
distinct marks of a witch (it's a gender-neutral term btw. and so is ‘warlock’, which are a different species from the witches, against popular notion) include unnaturally coloured, glowing eyes. the colour of their eyes are actually their magical aura.
a sigil of their coven naturally appears on their body when they are born. there are very rare cases of witches having no sigil if all the members of their coven die.
HUNTERS
many of them are gifted with the sight but for the rest who don't, they acquire it through magic. pretty ironic, i know. tachibana was gifted with the sight since they were born, it was the reason why they usually had terrible nightmares of the strange beings they kept seeing everywhere.
even though the hunters can (and will) kill some supernaturals one-on-one, depending on the amount of training they've had, they usually avoid doing it in places packed with humans.
nowadays, the independent hunters usually wait for bounties before killing a supernatural, while the government employed ones wait for orders from the supernatural committees themselves.
DEMONS & THE UNDERWORLD
demons are just supernatural beings who, much like their biblical myths, punished evil souls in hell and also roamed the earth for their own fun. they have their greek counterparts too, most notably the three furies.
while there are still some demons in hell who are watching over the souls there, most of them are on earth and enjoying the wonders that it has to offer. seriously, you would not want to stay there at a sweltering temperature 25/8 and punish a never-ending line of souls.
contrary to popular beliefs, most demons are pretty chill and are fond of this world. they even settle down and have children with mortals they fall in love with. the senarath twins are a product of a wily succubus falling in love with a charming human businessman.
demons are scarily good at deceiving even supernaturals so it's very hard to tell if someone is a demon or not. their glamour is seriously nothing to scoff at, they even give the fae folk a run for their money.
the underworld is a pretty complicated place and there are so many entities that rule and reside there. yes, they exist there together but don't actually interact with each other unless it's absolutely necessary. as for how to know which beings and gods you would find there, it all depends on your beliefs. for example, TCS MC would turn up in the greek version of the underworld while SoV MC will end up in helheim (or simply, hel), which is the norse equivalent of it.
CAMBIONS
cambions, on the other hand, don't exactly receive that amount of mastery over their glamour like their hellbound parent. they are good at it, sure, but they usually don't fool other supernatural creatures as well as they fool humans.
the distinct traits of cambions are their cat-like, slitted pupils and eyes that shine a little brighter when they are using their powers (a bit like witches, although their glowing eyes are permanent).
their nails can also turn into sharp talons and they are born with leathery wings which they can grow and retract with age as they gain more control over their powers. the latter is a very painful process though since the bones in their back have to literally shift and break to pierce through the skin and extend into wings.
if you think that's bad, imagine how mama seranath managed to push not one, but two winged demonic spawns out 💀 thankfully, guinevere knows her magic, along with being a literal demon, so the damage wasn't that severe and she recovered pretty well. otherwise, r.i.p that 😺 ayyy

Aight y’all it’s time for me to put on my clown shoes as god intended
Though man, what a delightfully rainy day today to write =v=
Fluff ABCs Template here
Cuddling -- How does he like to cuddle?
He is a simple man, with simple needs.
That being said, I think he’s one for a lot of gentle affection. Despite appearances–I mean hell, he literally wears a necklace of thorns–he’s actually a very tender lover. Loves hand-holding, scooting close under umbrellas, making shapes out of the little beauty marks that dot her skin. He will take any excuse to hold her and run with it.
Ideally, I think he prefers privacy above all else, most typically in his room in the castle. This side of him, so soft with his love for her, belongs to her and her alone. He refuses to let anyone else kill his immersion the moment (cue Charles dragging Faust away from doing something disruptive and stupid), or indulge in the sight of her so rosy-cheeked and loving. Loves dropping little kisses to the crown of her head, her shoulders, the backs of her hands. He’s waited so many long years to be able to hold her close like this, to feel the heat of her blush and the tinkle of sweet giggles when he nips and pecks at her pretty skin. All of this, every single second, is beyond value to him…he cherishes each memory close to his heart, crystallized fragments of joy in a life so bereft of it.
His favorite position for cuddling tends to be a kind of side lean. Usually she’ll be lying down (or turned towards him, sometimes) while he’s on his side beside her (usually against a wall or the back of a sofa). He loves that he can gaze at her as much as he likes this way, he really can’t get enough. The person he was searching for all this time, right here, no sign of leaving…
Nightmare -- What is his worst fear?
Oh boyo boy. Oh boy...
Honestly, I really don’t see anything horrifying him as much as losing MC. I don’t think he’s a man above fear. He hates being abandoned, he’s afraid of the world being torn apart by humanity’s indifference.
But nothing compares to the shattering fear of losing MC.
I think he has a very particular intense fear about losing loved ones because of the nature of his life history. He is still deeply affected by his entire clan being wiped out by hunters, leaving him alone to carry the weight of that legacy and loss. While he couldn’t help but give his heart to the woman who saved him, the reality of his terror is undeniable. After so many centuries of searching, after so many years of feeling hollow and alone…Even now, he has never come to terms with the way his family was ripped away from him. To know the gentleness of love again, to finally have a hand to hold only to lose it…
Well, I really can’t imagine the terrifying result of that. I imagine he would be far beyond reason.
Whenever he has bad dreams of the very same fear, he is nigh inconsolable. He holds her very tightly without saying a word (which is unlike him) and she'll know not to let him go for a while. She murmurs calming things, promises of things they'll do together in the future, strokes his hair and rubs his back. They only leave the bed when he's feeling somewhat stabilized again, but even so he'll hold her hand for longer than usual days after. Embraces her more, finds any excuse to hide away.
Oddity -- What is one quirk he has?
I think one part of him that is overlooked is that he is a man very interested in the nature of contradiction, the duality that resides in all things–himself included. Some parts of his preoccupation are more obvious than others. For instance, he loves flowers due to the nature of their ephemeral beauty, but also enjoys trying to preserve them to let their appeal survive. There’s also the fact that flowers can look or smell lovely, but can harbor poisons strong enough to kill grown human beings. (Not unlike him.)
He is a vampire in which the front-end of his operations is a cathedral, and I imagine that was a purposeful move as well. There are so many angles to consider here, namely two obvious ones that come to mind. There is the non-threatening concept of the cathedral: in which people assume it is a safe haven, a place to seek care/assistance/prayer (not entirely so in this case, even if Faust plays priest.) There’s the possibility that vampire hunters are typically supplied by/supported by the church (not sure if this is the case here, but it is a common trope). That would mean Vlad would be using the face of the very human institution that ruined his life to enact revenge, to say nothing of the potential risk of hunters seeking sanctuary only to run into a den of vampires.
There is also wondering whether or not he purposely wears that necklace of thorns ;;;;; (For anyone unaware, there was the whole Jesus wearing a crown of thorns specifically as an extension of humiliation, branding him the “fake king" of the Jewish people.) My contention here would be that he is basically saying “lmao, I’m your suffering saint now.” Or maybe he’s just really into masochistic jewelry, I have no idea.
He appears to have a kind of obsession with subverting norms/conventional expectations, and I have to wonder if it runs with his general underdog theme…
Secrets -- How open is he with her?
Despite his generally guarded nature, with MC he is entirely transparent when they’re in a relationship. Unless he doesn’t want to scare her or simply feels something would be best shared at a later time, he makes no real attempt to hide anything from her. If she asks and he knows the answer, he’ll spill.
(Okay but sometimes it gets hilarious, because say Faust has been trying for years to get info out of him about some stupidly specific thing. And Vlad is always very evasive, dances out of reach, plain ignores him. MC asks and he’s just like “oh yeah, in 1582 I remember–” It’s a wonder Faust never throws hands about it, pisses him off so much LMFAO)
Before their relationship was established he hesitated more, largely because the nature of his existence and his ties to her were a lot to take in at the time. I think he prefers not to overwhelm her whenever possible. It’s very much a kind of “I won’t info drop on you thoughtlessly, but if you ask me a question I’ll do my best to answer with the truth.”

how about before being isekai'ed to NRC mc was a vigilante? like a mix of daredevil and batman or like deadpool and red hood? imagining mc using martial arts or macgyvering unassuming everyday objects into weapons to defeat overblots instead of magic seem cool, the funniest scenario, mc using a wooden spoon, a slipper or even if you watched icarly a butter sock to hit and defeat an opponent would be hilarious
Honestly I love the idea of this scenario! Part of me always kind of wished with the overblots is that the MC would get involved somehow - I know it’d be dangerous, but who doesn’t love going a lil feral at some overblot monsters lmao ------
It’s like something straight out of a comic book. Sure, the same thing could be said about your situation - a self-made vigilante fighting to protect those close to you from idiots who think they’re smart enough to cause anything other than trouble - but getting straight up isekai’ed into another universe full of magic and fairy tale rewrites really takes the cake of weird situations you’ve gotten roped into. Guys in masks? You’ve seen them in abundance back home, so while the ‘extravagant’ nature of the headmaster is weird, it doesn’t really phase you. Being surrounded by a bunch of confused boys with vividly bright hair (and do some of those guys have razor teeth? You really don’t wanna find out if they do) and having a talking cat ranting your ear off about becoming the greatest wizard of all time...that’s around the time you figure out this isn’t just some elaborate kidnapping plot.
Being shacked up in this new world isn’t as bad a deal as you thought it would be, though going from physical fights every other week to just having to worry about classes was...an experience, to say the least, and takes a bit of getting used to in terms of putting your guard down. It isn’t long during your stay at Night Raven college that you start garnering attention too, and not just because of the circumstances surrounding your enrollment. Your way of dealing with things is a lot more physical than many of them used to; when Ace had first come to Ramshackle after being collared by Riddle, instead of asking what it was or what he’d done, you’d instead just sat him down and spent the better part of half an hour picking the lock. Granted, it wasn’t enough to crack Riddle’s magic, but Ace is pretty sure he heard something click open while you fiddled with the keyhole - and that was just a speck of some of your skills.
The physical prowess and litheness that comes from your ‘profession’ were valuable assets back in your homeworld, and while you’re not there anymore you’re still able to make use of them in this world, or you try to, at least. It makes for a hell of an entertaining sight during Ashton’s classes - you’ve just about knocked everyone in your class on their ass at least once (both intentionally and unintentionally). It’s been useful getting to lessons too, though you’ve spooked more than a few of your fellow classmates when they’ve caught you scaling the side of the building to skip the stairs and make it to class on time. You’ll never forget the shriek Ace let out when you dove through the window, skidded across the floor, and slid seamlessly into your seat right before the professor came through the door. Things like that have earned you more than a few skeptical looks, but it’s also led to more than a few people coming up to you to ask how you do it.
Just because you’re in a school setting doesn’t mean you slack off on your training. If anything, it means you have to train all the more to make sure you’re not growing rusty - you’re not about to get left in the dust just because all of these guys have wands and this ‘unique magic’ business at their disposal. That being said the lack of a fighting partner makes things difficult; when you first get settled into Ramshackle you find plenty of furniture beyond repair that you’ve been able to use, and with everything being such a cluttered mess it makes for the perfect obstacle course as you fight to clean it all up. But you’re missing your training buddies, and as much as Grim gets on your case about you being his subordinate, you’re not about to get expelled for fighting your magical feline housemate...not just yet, anyway. You do look around for some sparring partners though, and you find some pretty damn good ones in the process. Deuce is one of the first, being quite the fighter in the past, but given that it’s a skill he hasn’t actively trained it doesn’t take long for you to - quite literally - sweep his feet out from under him. Jack’s fairy competent too thanks to all of the muscle, so sparring with those two at once has given you something to bond over after school. As you got to know more students, you found a pretty good training buddy in Rook - you guess being a hunter has its perks, and isn’t that far off from being a vigilante, but it gives you one hell of a lesson to avoid getting on his bad side.
They’ve seen you make impromptu weapons out of things before - you just about took Floyd’s head off with a spatula when he’d rushed through the door unannounced, and Grim keeps finding the ends of the kitchen’s wooden utensils sharpened to a point when he sneaks down for late night snacks. You’re guessing old habits die hard, and it's tricky business completely stopping some of your more bizarre daily tasks.
Looks like those same skills come in handy when the overblots happen however! It’s not as though anyone gives you a crash course on magic overuse and overblotting, so when you see Riddle transform and watch that huge, tank of a thing start forming up behind him you have what you’d like to call, a reasonable reaction. The boys are preparing to fight their overblotted friend when a tea cake stand comes sailing overhead and nails the being behind Riddle directly in the face - or pot, you guess.
The thing is at least physical, which means you can hit it, and your friends are too preoccupied with Riddle to stop you from barging into the fray with just about every impromptu weapon you can get your hands on. Plates, cups, shoes, amongst other things shower the air as you close the distance, and at one point you end up hoisting up one of the garden chairs and swinging it up at the jar head until you have enough momentum to let go. The sound of shattering glass has you letting out a triumphant holler as you backtrack to avoid the spew of ink that spatters across the floor, cracks fanning out across the inkpot‘s surface as its hands fly up to its broken ‘face’ and it howls as though appalled by your audacity.
Whether that actually has a hand in finishing the fight or not, it isn’t long after that the overblot incident passes and Riddle collapses; however, that’s not before you get a couple more hits in, just about bringing the overblot to its knees by the time it finally dissipates for good. Once the Heartslabyul dorm leader is back on his feet and led away to rest and recover somewhere less demolished, that’s when the attention is focused back on you.
There’s more than a few comments about you getting involved in the fight when you have no magic - some comments are admonishing, telling you to be more careful and to not be so reckless; others however are more than a little intrigued by the turnout. Ace just about knocks you over when he claps his hands onto your shoulders and demands to know how the hell you learned to move like that, and Grim is more than a little puffed up bragging about how of course his lackey would be so useful. It catches you off guard - you’re so used to just doing this in your day-to-day life that having someone admonish or praise you is...nice, in a way. It reminds you of when you first took up the vigilante mantle, and you find yourself brimming with excitement at the thought. If they think what you did then was neat, just wait till you tell them about all of your escapades in your home world! You’ve got enough to keep em hooked for days.

Hunter MC
To understand this post you’re going to have to read this post
It’s about Vampires and how they react to different frequencies and how it can make them go feral, but in this Ikevamp scenario, horny as all hell.  CAUSE YOU’RE ALL HORNY BITCHES.
Mc comes through the door to 19th century Paris and is stuck with 11 Vampires.  Well.  This MC is a vampire hunter back in her time so this doesn’t do any good for the guys.  Of course she doesn’t have most of her equipment, but she’s able to test a theory that she has.
She agrees that she won’t kill them, but that doesn’t mean she won’t harm them.  Leonardo, Comte, and Sebastian keep a close eye on her just to be sure.
Mc stays in her room most of the time.  She has a small radio that she’s  using to test her theory.  This radio sends out different frequencies, and she’s trying to figure out how vampires react to different frequencies.  She turns it on, and off again.  All you hear is Arthur from the next room yelling “WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT” and that’s how she knew it worked.
She didn’t always have it on, it does have negative side effects in her favor.  She would maybe use it 3 or 4 times through the day.  Sometimes in the middle of the night to see if they’ll wake up from it.
Now Purebloods react differently  to these frequencies.  So does Mozart due to his sensitive hearing.  MC will be in her room messing with the radio and next thing she knows she hears Leonardo from outside yelling “WILL YOU FUCKING STOP THAT.” he hasn’t been able to have peaceful sleep.
Isaac is going insane.  He just wants to do science and look at stars.  He decides he going to give MC a taste of her own medicine and tries using what he has to make a frequency that will bother her.  But it isn’t that easy.  He turns it on and it makes his ears ring and he turns it off.
Isaac made himself temporarily deaf, which he finds out really isn’t that bad.  MC knows what he tried to do and pats him on the back and tells him he did good for trying.
So a while later MC is in the library and Isaac walks in and goes across the room and looks at MC directly in the eye and runs his nails across a chalk board, flips her off and leaves.  Not exactly the same effect but MC in cringing and has goosebumps.  He can’t hear anything so he doesn’t mind just standing there and doing it over and over again.  When he regains his hearing a few days later he is tempted to just keep making himself deaf so he doesn't have to hear Arthur and Dazai.
Some frequencies are even soothing and will cause them to fall asleep.  She doesn’t use this one often because she’s rather torture them while she’s there.
Now Lessers and Purebloods hear different.  So they have different effects.  Remember Vamps having a heat cycle? Well there’s a frequency that can trigger that in Purebloods.  So while all the Lessers are in agony Leonardo and Comte are just horny.
Jean hears the frequency and is like JESUS IS SPEAKING TO ME AGAIN
Now this heat isn’t has strong as it would normally be, and this time for some reason they are territorial over MC.  Meanwhile MC is like “I kill vampires, I don’t fuck them”  But purebloods in heat also rubs off on humans, meanwhile she’s starting to get attracted to them.
At this point everyone is jealous of Will not living in the mansion.  MC is able to basically control them using these frequencies and they can’t wait until that door opens to be able to kick her out.

Dirty Secret
The Rigmarole: Mention of sexual contact / descriptive- dirty language. Swearing. Mox being a dominant cocky asshole. Sexual shenanigans (oral, male/female giving, toy play, alpha status) 18+ only.
Pairing. Dean Ambrose/Jon Moxley x OC
Rating. MC
Summary: When she looked at him she knew she was complete. She was HOME. They laughed and spent all their free time together. She wasn't surprised by the rumors, hurt yes but surprised no.
But he said not to worry, in the wrestling world, everything becomes a storyline sooner or later. That was fine with her. Sooner or later everyone will know who she is- the only thing she didn't plan on was the Shield. Or how looking at HIM made her into someone new, someone larger than life. She thought she was complete before? That she was home? Now..she knows better.
But now Evolution is back.. and that sledgehammer feels so heavy in her small hands.
(Actually, matches and timelines WON'T match up to this story. )
Tumblr media
January 2013
Looking around she wasn’t sure where to go or who to speak to. The busy buzz of backstage was intimidating at best and people seemed only to be concerned in their own little bubble. Moving to the side as a fast-moving cart of clothing came flying by Catherine Jane Parks sighed and continued down the hallway.
Her long platinum hair was tied back into a loose braid and she had loose strands framing her face. Her light honey-colored eyes darting left and right until she came across a blonde woman standing around the round looking over a sheet of paper.
“Excuse me, Miss.” Keeping her voice light and hoping her confusion wasn’t too evident.
Watching as dark brown shot up to her and saw the surprise as the other woman took in her jeans and Nike hoodie. Smiling in what she hoped was a friendly matter CJ pushed forward.
“I was wondering if you could tell me where to find.” Pausing for a moment she had to remember what exactly to him.
Their relationship was so new and fragile that they had dared put a label on it. Digging out her phone from her back pocket she scrolled through some text messages and nodded silently when she came upon it. Looking back up at the blonde she smiles big.
“Hunter?”
She saw the blonde’s eyes go wide and dart from left to right then swallow hard. Then after a stale moment, she nods and chokes out softly as she points down the hallway. Licking her lips as she starts to speak and rolls the paper she had been looking at up in her hands.
“Down that hallway, take a left, third door on your right. Knock right- always knock first.”
Then she taps the rolled-up paper against her head as if she was reminding herself to do so. Nodding as she turned down the hallway CJ thanked her and made her way with the directions she was given. Coming up on the door she leaned her head against it for a moment. This would be only the second time they have met, and it took her breath away.
Knocking as she got herself back under control, hearing his rough voice call out in a biting command.
“Come.”
Smiling as she pushed the door open and slipped inside. He was sitting at a desk, in a dress shirt that was rolled up to his elbows. His eyes were focused on a piece of paper, but twitching to look at a laptop screen that was set up to his right. CJ simply leaned against the door and watched him for a few seconds.
Then his eyes flicker to her, a ghost of a smile graces his lips and gentles ask. “How was your flight?”
Kicking herself off the door and moving closer she settles into the plush chair that is across from his desk. Their eyes haven’t strayed from one another, they are both smiling like idiots now. There is so much to say and to do now that she is here, here with him.
“Good, I have never flown before so it was something else.”
She sees the surprise in his dark eyes, the hurt as well but she dismissed it. She doesn’t want regret or hurt between them. Reaching to lay a hand on top of his she squeezes lightly, hoping he understands. Smiling a little when a light shines in his dark eyes. Suddenly there is another knock on the door. Withdrawing her hand she sits back in the chair, almost ashamed. Smiling a little when he whispers out an apology and then bellows out.
“Come.”
Turning cause she is curious about his life and his business because she wants to be a part of everything that is him. She blinks in surprise as three rather large men come walking in, Hunter sighs and picks up the paper he had been looking at when she had came in.
“Joe, Colby, Jon, good good.” His eyes dart to her and she realizes that maybe she has overstayed her welcome?
Hitching her thumb towards the door in silent question and wanting to squeal in delight when Hunter shakes his head. She simply nods and tries to melt more into the chair. Hunter sighs and shakes the piece of paper at the three men.
“Care to tell me what this was about?”
Glancing back when she heard a deep sigh followed by a grunt. She saw the man in the middle close his eyes and rub at his temples, the man to his right just stared ahead, but the man on the left looked right at Hunter and muttered softly.
“Poor timing or self-defense?”
He said it so innocently CJ was almost convinced until she saw the glint of his hard blue eyes. The small kick of a smile on his lips, then a lock of his hair fell into those devilish eyes and CJ knew what he was. He was pure trouble. Moving without thinking about she made her way to stand by Hunter’s side. Not trusting Mr. Blue Eyes for a minute.
She was aware her movement had all four men looking at her in question. Shifting uncomfortably, she glanced down to see the paper Hunter was waving around at the three men in front of him.
A police report
Snorting softly, it would seem as Mr. Blue Eyes was a little troublemaker. Feeling his hard blue eyes on her she moved closer to Hunter, and keep on reading the report only stopping when Hunter spoke again.
“How do you claim self-defense, Good? She was an undercover cop.”
Mr. Blue Eyes, aka Good which she found hilarious because she only see him being good at being bad.
“Fine Entrapment then, fuck boss-man the things she said she could do with her pus.”
Eyes wide, mouth going dry. Watching as the guy in the middle slapped Mr. Blue Eyes in the chest and the other man grunted. Hunter raising out of his chair, a snarl on his lips.
“You watch your fucking mouth, Good. There is a Lady present.”
Mr. Blue Eyes blinks at Hunter then at her, all the while rubbing his chest. When goes to open his mouth Hunter snaps out.
“You all three are fined ten thousand dollars each, consider it a welcome to the big leagues.”
When Mr. Blue Eyes flares in either anger or disgust Hunter adds.
“The next time it will be fifty thousand and a suspension. I don’t give a fuck hot the Shield is right now. You will learn to play by my rules and understand that this is not the fucking indies- you understand me, Mox?”
Putting a hand on Hunter’s foreman she wasn’t sure if this was a normal business day for him or not but he seemed so invested in what was happening. That it got her blood pumping, when he cast her a look. She smiled big for him. When he shoots the three men another glance she can tell he is calmer.
“I know you’re still adjusting, especially you Jon. I told you once, listen to Joe okay. He may have the least amount of experience in the ring as you and Colby but damn it man you all can learn shit from one another.”
Nodding in satisfaction she beamed at him, letting go of his foreman she knew from her own background that wasn’t always peaches and cream.
“It’s all about being a team. Learning each other's weaknesses and strengths. It’s not always easy to let someone in or let pick at the scabs you have.”
All four men were looking at her again, blushing. She shrugged and picked up a pen from Hunter’s desk, and clicked a few times.
“Colton words, not mine.”
Mr. Blue Eyes asks and she can hear the amusement in his voice. Making air quotes with her fingers she murmured.
“My dad, ex-bad boy player extraordinaire.”
Mr. Blue Eyes actually laughs at her then sticks his hands into his jean pockets.
“Darlin you don’t know bad boy until you know me.”
Now she is laughing, so much so that she has to hang onto Hunter’s chair so she doesn’t fall.
“You a bad boy? Please!”
She totally misses the hardness that enters his blue eyes as he takes a step forward, the middle man jerks him back and grunts out.
“Leave her alone man, she is just a little girl.”
Snorting as Hunter opens his mouth but she adds.
“I and a group of my friends met Colton at Peru’s. He had just bent my mother over in the bathroom for fifteen minutes after a fight, didn’t know who in the hell I was so after some angry sex and seeing my mom talk to me he thought it would be cool to try to get with me in the same bathroom.”
Hunter is snarling and has her in his arms in a flash. She is laughing cause she thinks it’s so damn funny now. Mr. Blue Eyes is smirking saucy.
“He didn’t piece it together for a while and for a while I let him play the charmer. You, can’t outdo Colton Messer, my friend. No matter what you say or do.”
The third man finally speaks up in a low smooth voice.
“The Colton Messer?”
Nodding she laughs as he flinches and glances at his friend then sighs. He mumbles a second later.
“Yeah, Uce give over. If half that shit is true- not even Mox is as bad as he is.”
Nodding as she shyly snuggles deeper into Hunter’s embrace she watches blue eyes blink then narrow. He licks his lips then after a moment he shrugs, turns to face Hunter again.
“Okay fine, you tightened the leash on your new puppy. Can we go?”
Hunter only grunts, his hand is in her hair, his lips on her forehead and she finally knows what it’s like to be home.
--------------------------------------------
Watching him across the room she can help the smile that graces her lips. Seeing him in this element is breathtaking, his wife Stephine stands beside him but she could care less about that. The woman doesn’t seem to care for CJ, and that’s just fine. Hunter keeps them separated most of the time, except when they are at shows.
WWE shows
At twenty-four CJ never thought she would be working for such a company. Currently, she is working with Mr. Maddox who is a pure gentleman and a delight. She has caught on quickly that the wrestling world isn’t like the outside world, or even the racing world. Colton was always trying to sucker into working for him after graduating from college this spring. Hunter had put his foot down and told her absolutely not.
Glancing at him again she couldn’t help but be proud. She was aware of the rumors backstage, Hunter and she hadn’t gone public with their relationship. Hunter was trying to give his wife as much as needed to adjust to having CJ around and in her face. But the rumors were there already.
They simply chose not to acknowledge them because in Hunter’s words.
I am sorry CJ, like it or not. I know Steph- you’ll be a storyline before long.
Then the nature of their relationship will come to light, some would doubt it she was sure of that. But Hunter promised to take care of things. And so far he had upheld all his promises to her.
Like never having to see Chase Beckett again.
Frowning at the thought of the man that almost ruined her life she blushed when Hunter suddenly met her gaze. His dark eyes weren’t soft and playful like they normally were but hard and cold. She had gotten used to seeing that look for the cameras for TV. Watching as he brought his cell phone up to his face she watched in slight concern as after a moment he hung up and looked away from her. His attention back on whatever his wife was talking about.
“That was strange.”
The words were out of her mouth before she could stop them, jumping slightly when a warm hand comes to rest on her right shoulder. Turning she comes face to face with one Dean Ambrose, whom she first met in Hunter’s office three weeks ago as Mr. Blue Eyes. Of course, she knows Dean is just his character’s name and his real name is Jon. But she still gets confused sometimes on what to call these guys.
“Mr.”
He doesn’t let her finish instead he gently takes her elbow in hand and starts to lead her out. They were at some charity event and blinked as his two friends flanked him as they near the door.
“No fuss and no noise sweetheart. Hunters command.”
The phone call
“But why?”
The question is out of her mouth before she realizes it, the man gliding her only grunts but when a reporter at the entrance calls out.
“Chase, can we get a word?”
Stiffing she tries to melt into three larger men, she hides the best she can. Once they make it out, pass the entrance and into a SUV she reaches in her purse and digs out her phone and hits a speed dial number.
“Yes?”
His voice is gruff and hard, but she can hear the concern under it. It makes her want to weep.
“Thank you.”
There is a pause then in a year of their relationship she finally whispers.
“Thank you so much and I love you.”
He sucks in a breath, and she starts to openly cry. His words are light and his voice is gentle.
“I love you too, CJ. Since the day I met you.”
She hears him hang up and she can’t stop crying because even with the hurdle of telling Hunter she loves him she feels so very much alone. A strong arm comes around her shoulders and she doesn’t even blink; she just turns into him and balls her eyes out.

May 2013
To say he has gotten used to being a WWE superstar is understatement. But he has watched and listened. After the fiasco in January, Joe had put the hammer down to their partying and he had cleaned up his act. Not that he was super bad to begin with.
Jonathan Good was a good man, or that’s what Colby and Joe says. Joe’s old lady swears by it too.
If you wasn’t I wouldn’t trust you with my daughter, you asinine.
Chuckling at the memory as he warmed up, they were coming off Mania season and anything could happen. He had no clue if the Shield’s thing with Sheamus, Big Show, and Randy Orton was completely done or not. Then inside of his brain snarls and pokes at him. He wouldn’t tell a soul about this- about how bad he is hurting because being handed a scripted for every promo kills him.
The snarling and poking inside of him, he knows is from his creative side. It’s a side that has mashed into his old Mox character and the fucker is still breathing and living deep in his soul.
But he is trying to cut it out, slowly and carefully. And, it feels like, with a dull ass spoon. Certain things don't help, either. Namely the little young number that is currently his boss' side piece.
Since that back in January he has kept a loose eye on her. CJ Parks even landed herself a job as a personal assistant to Greg Maddox. That he mused, was an injustice, all by itself. But who was he to say otherwise, one of the perks of fucking the boss man he supposed.
Looking over at Joe he put it out there.
“A what-if for you.”
It’s a game they play, Joe was quick to catch on it helped with his mental state at times. So six month into their run, having become closer, the bigger man only grunts as he sits down and slips on his boots.
“If you were the princess. Wouldn’t it piss you the high off that your hubby was keeping his younger side piece in your face all the damn time.”
After all he mused Hunter had called him and his boys from their charity interview a while back to pull his babygirl out of the whole event for some odd reason. Colby butts in with.
“Maybe it’s an open arrangement?”
Looking at Joe specifically he asked more heatedly.
“But I mean, the age- wouldn’t it be like robbing the cradle or something?”
Joe chokes on thin air and shakes his head, Jon can see the smile he is sporting though. The is a knock on the door and when whoever doesn’t wait for an all clear it speaks volumes. Watching as Hunter himself slips into the locker room, Jon plops down and reaches for the tape out of his bag. It doesn’t take Hunter long to get to the point.
“Tonight you boys will seek out Maddox for a new challenge. However he will get wind of it, and high tail it out of here. That leaves you dealing with his assistant.”
Sighing softly so this was why the personal face to face. Hunter wanted to make sure they treated his side piece with kid gloves. Fair enough, he supposed, they could-
“Ambrose I want you to go full throttle on her.”
Blinking in total surprise and a little shock, he nodded.
“Sure I can- WAIT. What?”
Joe snickers at him and Colby clunks down beside him in a hurry. Hunter only grunts then raises a hand and rubs it over his domed head.
“If you can get her to shed some tears even better. Dip into Mox if you have too but keep it PG. Cause this where things are going to get interesting boys, seems like Dave is coming back. And well since Randy is still wanting some of you boys.”
Colby is leaning forward like a kid on Christman morning. His eyes are lit up and sparkling up but Jon can’t seem to care because he can’t seem to wrap his mind around Hunter wanting him to cut a promo on his side piece. And not just any promo. Suddenly Hunter's words break through his thoughts.
“That’s right Evolution will be reborn next week.”
Shaking his head he drops his tape and snaps out.
“Hunter are you sure, you want me to cut a promo on your girl? I mean..?”
Hunter gives him a hard look then stands, looks at his watch and nods. Moves towards the door, all without looking back at him.
“You have one hour Jon. And three takes to get it done. Don’t disappoint me Jon.”
--------------------------------------------
The Shield finds Maddox's assistant in their joint office, her pretty long platinum hair is twisted into a messy bun that has chopstick sticking out of it. Her eyes look so fucking delicious behind a pair of reading glasses. She is on her cell phone, her eyes go wide and big when she sees them.
Dean gives her credit for standing when they file into the office room. He barks out.
“Where is Maddox?”
She physically flinches and replies to whoever is on the phone.
“Mr. Hemsley one moment if you please.”
An errant “Jon” thought crosses his mind.
Do you call him that behind closed doors baby?
Dean quickly pushes it away, there is no time or space for Jonathan Good or Jon Moxley in the here or now. This, THIS right now belongs to him- belonged to Dean Ambrose. He won’t screw it up again. Never again.
“Gentlemen how may I assist you tonight?”
The Mox in him howls and begs at his control, they had rehearsed the promo earlier. It had taken all three tries to get, he not happy with the first- she the second. And now here was another damn character in his head wanting to detail the whole damn thing. With something that clearly wasn’t PG. That clearly would get him fired.
“Little girl, you can’t assist me with what I want.”
And there it was. Jesus Fucking Christ. Not only did he see the surprise in her honey colored eyes but he FELT the surprise in his teammates. Shifting the US Championship belt on his shoulder he grinded his teeth together, how in the fuck to save this?
“What you can give me, and my boys, what we want!”
Okay that was a little better, at least it was getting them back on track. Then to his horror he saw something flash in those shiny golden eyes, saw her lips form in o pout and the tilt of her head as she looked him dead in the eye and leaned forward.
“Nope!”
His mind blanked.
Time stilled.
When it picked back up and he reacted it wasn’t Dean Ambrose that snarled back, almost happily.
“I was hoping you would say that, doll.”
As quick as lightning his hand shot out, tangled itself, her messy bun hair do and brought her smashing up against his body and her lips up against his.
Jonathan Good knew as the cameraman called out that they were all clear that he was good as fucked. The question was, did he care?

I know this so soon, especially after posting it. But may ask for part two for Ciel in Twisted wonderland?
Of course you can ! Thank you all guys for your great support on last part ! Hope you enjoy this ♥
Part one : Ciel In Twisted Wonderland
Sebastian in twisted wonderland
Tumblr media
This demon...his not existing heart stops when he goes to wake the young master up but finds the bed empty . There is no way of him getting kidnapped , not a single soul could do it so silently and carefully to hide from his sight . It surely isn't with Ciel running away himself either because 1) He was nothing more than a weak child when it came to serious actions on his his own and 2) He knew that Sebastian would find him anyway and eat his soul in terms of acting against their contract
But if no human was here last night to kidnap or help him run away , then who could it be ?
Sebastian doesn't't care to receive any direct answers , after all his demonic powers are far greater than this and he can sense Ciel's soul somewhere out there , he's still alive
Takes him an afternoon to search each and every spot of London , two days for the whole country and 5 days until Sebastian searches every place on earth that he could've found Ciel on , to find nothing . This only had one meaning :
Not on earth yet still alive . Ciel is on another dimension and Sebastian is coming for him . Takes Sebastian some time searching possible options between different dimensions , but once he finds twisted wonderland , he is fascinated by how easy he could enter ; perhaps something about this place has the same energy to a demon
Night Raven College ; what a great spot to begin with . He now can smell Ciel's soul through the air and knows that he's Nothing more than a few meters away : Problem solved !
He can go pick Ciel up and right away and by the next morning , he'll be simple the butler he always is , serving some earl gray tea together with almond and chocolate cake . But doesn't it sound a bit too unfair...? Even demons need entertainment sometimes ; also this new world seems to be pretty interesting to him and he doesn't mind playing around for just a while
Crowley still hasn't get over why or where Ciel came from and now , a second one arrives out of nowhere ?? He looks too old to be a student but then what is he doing here ? Oh man...Birdy man would surely need a loooong vacation after this issue is solved...
Since Crowley is the first to arrive at him , Sebastian doesn't bother asking him where his little , tiny master is . Dark gray-blue hair and a blindfold on his right eye - enough to address
Crowley can't be any happier than someone finally came to take that disaster away , but then worries for a second : Does this butler know how to make a return to another world...?
Sebastian decides to leave answering this question to Crowley's imagination , and goes after Ciel as his first priority is
Ciel and Grim are having another late night argument when Sebastian arrives . In a blink of an eye , Sebastian grabs both of them and brings them up to stop them from making all these noise
"A cat...?" Oh ? Young master really can't take cats , right ? How pathetic for real , even a demon like him can't resist hugging such a cute and fluffy creature . And it talks ? Whoa this world is really something
Sebastian let's go of both of them and it's time for Ciel to freeze again : He finally came
Ciel asks if it's really him and Sebastian is low-key entertained to see Ciel actually missing him . He offers him a hug saying that's what humans do when meeting each other after a long time , but all Ciel gives him is a slap . Where the hell was he all this time ??! It's been weeks since Ciel had disappeared and he was giving up on him ever coming
MC is terrified by Ciel's ear scratching shouts thinking that it's just Grim and him arguing again . They quickly come out to separate them before it gets worse but instead , faces a very tall , handsome man holding Grim with his arms with half of his face as red a tomato , exactly like when Eliza slapped all guys . And Ciel is shouting at him yet he's this calm smiling and doing nothing ? Nonsense...
Just as MC is watching , Sebastian recognizes someone nearby and is stunned to see MC : Another human ? What a strange coincidence... . MC on the other hand has more things to worry about : Who is this man and what does he have to do with Ciel ? They hadn't ever seen him before and his clothing is more similar to a servant than a part of school's staff or something... To be honest , there's one more thing that seems odd about him : He seems too familiar
Sebastian notices MC's confusion and thinks that maybe he's heard enough of Ciel's naggings ; in a few minutes , the whole bunch is chilling and having tea inside the Ramshackle dorm , Sebastian made the tea of course
MC doesn't know how to feel , but since he is supposedly Ciel's servant , they decide to trust him . Grim on the other hand is really interested in this dude showing up : Not only did he shut the half blind brat's mouth but he also seems to be pretty strong and chill . He says that he likes cats as well...man of culture
Ciel doesn't get why Sebastian is slowing down again , why don't they return immediately ? It's already taken him too long and staying here much longer would be nothing but a waste . Although Sebastian can make a return to London it withing a second , he tells his master that he needs to take care of an business for sometime here , and he doesn't lie ( He needs to have some time to chill even as a demon and also , extra information never does any harm ) He insures Ciel that no threat would come close to him now that he's here , so then Ciel finally agrees , but he also clarifies that he's already being chased by a considerable majority of this school ( in other words : He is in a great trouble) and Sebastian promises to protect him by all means ; just as always
Ciel is still forced to attend classes because : 1) Sebastian told him it's good to learn possibly useful lessons belonging to a world of magic 2) Sebastian is lurking around all day and taking care of Ciel's current issues so he would be on his own if he stays at Ramshackle dorm
Sebastian has learned enough through Ciel's stories to know what he must do first , so here he is : The mostrolounge
The infamous tweels are a bit fascinated , yet interested to greet this unexpected guest of them , and when Sebastian asks for where he can find their manager , they gladly lead him to Azul's office and then , Sebastian asks them to leave the two of them alone . No one knows what happened in those 26 minutes but Azul came out putting a hand on Sebastian's shoulder , snickering and saying it's good to see this misunderstanding solved . Sebastian agrees with a bright smile , wishes them all a nice business day and leaves. Floyd and Jade don't ask what they talked about and Azul probably wouldn't answer if they did ; but let's just say that Azul doesn't say a word for the rest of the day and his sweaty face and shakey hands , kinda explain why
Well then , another problem solved , now Sebastian wants to get to know these creatures better . Must of them look like humans but with more advantages , interesting
He likes : Grim ( A talking cat ? How can Sebastian resist ? ) Riddle ( Low-key having Ciel's spirits , but in a mature way ) , Ace and Deuce ( Children these days... still fun to tease though ) , Trey Clover ( Perhaps the picture of a high-key good servant ) , Jade and Floyd ( Beside looking a lot alike , they get along pretty well . The calm yet mysterious Jade opposing the cheerful but frightening Floyd , these two would be what Sebastian can call his perfect mutuals , Ruggie Bucchi ( The forced servant of an unworthy master , he couldn't relate anymore ) , Jamil Viper ( The underestimated yet , intelligent and talented servant . Taking advantage of someone who took away all his changes to shine seems pretty fair to Sebastian , he can see the day Jamil would be an almighty ruler of his own ) , Rook Hunt ( Born to be a hunter , his spirits are appreciative ) , Malleus Draconia ( Dark and Mysteriously powerful , don't these sound similar to what Sebastian is...? He can say it for sure that Malleus as well has noticed Sebastian's unusual aura ) , Lilia Vanrouge ( Ah ~ old souls , golden thoughts , right ? It's been a. while since Sebastian could see someone understanding these benefits of living for centuries )
He dislikes : Cater ( Acts sassy , sneaks quietly . What a smart and annoying guy ) , Azul Ashengrotto ( Big words coming from an emotional child , he acts tough but he has no idea how much more he has to learn to become a real contracter... ) , Leona Kingscholar ( Pittyful and helpless , bullying others may make him feel powerful , but eill never change the fact that he'll never ever be a king ) , Kalim al Asim ( He stole Jamil all he should've had , just because of money. One day this foolish child will pay for it ) , Vil Schoenheit ( Why wasting your all on beauty ? He could be anything , way greater than the pathetic man he now is . Yet he wastes his all for something this shortlasting and worthless...You will get old one day , and all your beauty would be left behind before you step into your own grave) , Idia Shroud ( A loser keeping his pain inside ; just like Gregory Violet . He may be smart , but is still a trash if he's going to continue to be this weak) , Sebek Zigvolt ( Poor bastard , he doesn't even know that the master he worships doesn't even need him . One day he'll break down realizing the fact that he did him no good else than wasting his time by worthless praises of a fanboy )
His stay may be short , but he's taking the best advantage of it . Aside all these new creatures he met , some experiences are pure gold and will never be repeated in his long lasting life
Who knew that one day Sebastian would get to play card games with a cat and lose ? Well, this one's an experienced cat he can say . Grim even suggests them going to Staff's department and steal one of Crewel's expensive bottles of Vodka ( Ace had told that his cousin and his batch once did it and that was just- Ah . A newer level of being drunk had been approached ) Sebastian doesn't drink and doesn't get why a cat might want to drink either , but does it anyway . Grim happily goes on and takes a larg sip then , almost sets the whole dorm in fire just by one belch ( Alcohol + Fire = 💥) When MC understands that he was drunk , they want to kill Sebastian and Grim together . What if the fire exploded inside his body and made him explode !!!????? He would've been an exploded over-cooked cat . He gets sick afterwards and Sebastian goes to learn some vet tips , he nurses Grim although MC is still mad
Grim isn't his only new mutual , not while tweels are around . Sebastian is fascinated to see that they are interested in getting to know him just as he is ; these three seem to greatly get along . While poor Azul gets overly pale and quiet whenever Sebastian is around , tweels don't mind bringing him along almost anywhere . He learns them some beneficial tips and recipes for enormous drinks and desserts , they are truly amazed . They could've offered him to work in mostrolounge but it's clear that Sebastian has way higher classes than a normal school cafe , so it's better to let him lead them with his skills instead . Other than that , they really enjoy talking ; Floyd agrees that he looks pretty similar to a dragonfish , but still goes on calling him Sebastian .( He only calls Azul and Jade by their name else than that) . Floyd looks high-key similar to Grell when he laughs , but in contrast to him , Sebastian doesn't find this one annoying . They all look pretty similar and when others see them hanging around , rumors of Sebastian being a brother or relative of them starts getting spread . Honestly many even though that he was just Jade with dyed her and contact lenses when they saw him . Sebastian is really enjoying himself in this three person gang but sadly he doesn't have much time for it, there are other stuff he has to take care off...
The reason he doesn't go after Leona and Vil although they as well are known fir having problems with Ciel is obvious : They can do nothing . Once Leona and Sebastian get in a fight and Sebastian doesn't mind kicking his ass to the ground , children these days really do need to learn to behave . May seem funny , but to be honest , Sebastian has seen this amount of anger just once before and that would be with lady Elizabeth , she would've been a better leader than this guy though - Same goes for Vil , when he sees Rook getting s bit annoying as their stalker he writes a letter to the Pomefiore dorm , blaming him for being a thoughtless leader who wastes all his time and effort on his mortal beauty . No need to say how Vil reacts reading his letter or why he sets up a big fire to burn something afterwards...
Sebastian is almost done here now , he's seen enough and gained enough of enemies as well ; not that they are a bother but they are kinda annoying ... The only unsolved question is with the headmaster ; what is he hiding ? He made the same mistake with Undertaker and underestimated him ; he isn't going to make the same mistake twice . He knows that whatever he's hiding is related to MC , who comes from the same world as Ciel , just a different time . Sebastian could be the one saving them from this world but he knows that this won't be the right thing to do . MC's problems have nothing to do with him and also , leaving the whole school alone without their hero would be a mistake . No need to mention that Grim as well will need a friend when he wakes up and finds Sebastian gone...
This night is terrifying : Savanaclaw and Pomefiore dorms have taken serious action toward Ciel and Sebastian . Sebastian doesn't get to say goodbye to neither tweels nor MC and Grim , he just quickly picks Ciel up and runs toward the School building , no need to take this mess to where MC lives for now
Angry shouts and shooting magic balls all around , Sebastian chases them all just just as he always does . The terrified Ciel who is laying between his arms asks him what they're going to do . Sebastian gives him a comforting smile
" Just close your eyes , young master..."
♦♥♠♣
Ciel calls for Sebastian several times , heart still beating heavily . He screams his name and wakes up : at his bed . Wait...was it all a dream...?
He hears a knock at his door and then Sebastian comes in , asking if he's alright . Ciel tells him that he doesn't remember anything from last night after closing his eyes and how they ran off - Sebastian just gazes at him with a confused look . He apologizes for not knowing what Ciel is talking about , but says thst from what he knows , Ciel was really tired last night after spending all day listening to lady Elizabeth's thoughts on mixing fairytales with Alice in wonderland's classic . Now that makes sense... Sebastian offers him to go to a doctor if he's feeling any sick , but Ciel says that it's no need for that . It was all a dream but...a strange one for sure
A few minutes later , Ciel is having black forest cake and green tea , something he missed eating on his dream . When Ciel asks him if they're having tuna fish for lunch Sebastian smirks under lips . Then excuses himself and leaves . Poor Grim , he would've loved this food . While he is waiting for the fish to get boiled at the kitchen , he looks at the Vodka bottle with 1/4 of it empty , he wants to try drinking a bit someday . Little Ciel doesn't need to know whether it all was a dream or not , after all even with knowing it a human can do nothing but to think of it over and over ; which is useless . This experience would be a reality to him and a dream to Ciel but they have something in common : They'll never ever forget it

PART I - PART II - PART III
bye i created this on a whim ive always wanted to write an mc who just likes money yet still carries the “happiness/freedom” ideals of mondstadt.. essentially its an mc whos like hell yeah i love money <3 and fun..!!! okay also i did not edit this at all i was just like <3 writing time baby..
Tumblr media
Of course, working for the wealthiest gentleman in Mondstadt was no easy task. There were two places you could work: Dawn Winery or Angel’s Share. The winery, settled in the countryside, was a cozy job with friendly workers who saw rolling hills of green every day; however, the only available occupation within your skillset was being a maid. So you worked at Angel’s Share which was planted in the city, and there you were greeted with weary workers and angry people. It was plenty more fun, anyway.
Your boss was as impassive as a tree, giving you your pay and leaving you be. He kept a strange emotional distance. Which was fine. Totally fine. But whenever you wanted a raise, his aloof attitude warded you off and you’d tell yourself you’d try next time.
Growing up in a household where money was a prominent figure in your life, you had materialistic values and a great love for money. So during your employment at the tavern, you picked up more shifts than anyone else and seldom splurged. You were stuck giving your laments to your friends and returning customers who were kind enough to humor wails.
“One of these days, Lisa, I’m actually going to lose it,” you said to the librarian of the knights. You slumped your body on the bar, clearly in a professional fashion. “What do you want to drink?”
Lisa gave you a pitying look. “You could always become a knight or an adventurer. They receive plenty of pay through commissions.”
“No, thank you! I kind of want to live.”
“I don’t think I’ll have anything to drink,” Lisa said. She laughed at your sullen expression. “Today, at least. I have to explore these ruins later today. I really, really don’t want to, but Jean is making me.”
You slid a tin can labelled TIPS to Lisa. “Every time you don’t want to do something it’s five mora.”
“Since when did this become a thing?”
“It’s always been a thing. I was just giving you a family-friend discount up until now.”
Lisa dropped the coins into the can. You smiled at the sound of click-clank. Lisa rested her cheek on the palm of her hand and said, “have you ever thought about… not working for the tavern? I’m sure there are other places in the world that’ll appreciate your pleasant company.”
“Yeah, but Master Diluc pays the best in Mondstadt if you don’t have a decent education under your belt,” you said dryly. “I’d have to travel out of Mondstadt to find a better opportunity.”
“There’s always the cathedral,” Lisa offered.
“Do you see me as a devout follower to any god other than money? [Name], Humble Follower of Barbatos Since The Beginning! Engrave that on my tombstone, would you?”
“I don’t really want to do that.”
You pushed the tin can toward the librarian.
Lo and behold, the man of the hour strutted in with his typical apathy. If he carried himself with a more open chest and with his chin up, you’d find him more agreeable, more approachable. He’d be knightly, even. But Diluc hated knights. He hated small talk, too. He hated a lot of things.
He was a man of good looks and good fortune, in addition to being Mondstradt’s most eligible brooding bachelor bastard, donning a nice black coat with golden trimmings and tassels. A coat that’d fetch a nice price if you were to pawn it off. Not that you were thinking about selling your boss’ clothes. He stood at a decent height with his vermillion messy hair tied back and narrow eyes framed with thick lashes.
When Diluc walked through the doors, he didn’t spare you a glance before climbing up the stairs to deal with some other matters. As long as you did your job, he didn’t bother you.
Lisa whistled. “He’s so cold.”
“Pays well, though,” you murmured absentmindedly. Lisa looked as if she wanted to say something. Maybe it was something about how money didn’t exactly suffice for human relationships. Or something about her future job for the knights. Whatever was on the tip of her tongue, she chose not to say it, and dropped a few more mora coins into your little tin can.
Your relationship with Diluc was strange. You took enough shifts to be one of the most well-compensated workers under him, but you didn’t exactly know Diluc outside of his cool exterior. You didn’t know if you’d wanted to, either. Some nights, he’d come home right before the tavern’s opening, his clothes tattered and dirty and a grim feature coating his pretty features.
Typically you’d be working and cleaning, and you’d nod to him. Diluc would then take off to the second floor of the tavern. You never questioned it. You never would, either, unless you were paid to do so.
One late night, it was just you cleaning up for the night and Diluc sitting at the bar, going through some papers. Diluc offered to take Charles’ shift for the day, to which the man was grateful for. As you were wiping down the bar, Diluc said, “I never knew we had a tip jar.”
“It’s an ongoing gag with Lisa,” you said. “Please don’t mind it.” It wasn’t a lie, exactly. It was a joke with Lisa! You simply kept it out on the counter for every customer to see all day and all night. If they happen to drop mora in there for your charming smile and excellent service, who were you to stop them?
Diluc said nothing. You hadn’t expected him to. He’d let it slide, you supposed. If the tavern had a best employee of the month award, you would have won it consecutively for the last few years you’d been employed under the pretty man. However, Diluc was no great lover of trivial awards that were actually poorly concealed incentives, and as long as you were paid accordingly, you didn’t care about awards, either.
“If you needed a raise then say it,” he said suddenly. And you were surprised.
“Thank you,” you said.
“No need.”
When you left the tavern you squealed. Patton, the caller, awoke from his nap from a chair supposedly for customers. His legs had been propped on the accompanying table, which you had cleaned earlier so you didn’t have to deal with a certain customer who had too much to drink inside.
Patton rubbed his eyes groggily. “What’s up, [Name]?”
“I got a raise!” you exclaimed. “I’m so happy I could kiss you right now, Patton.”
“Please don’t,” he said. “What’s that in your hand?”
“Oh, leftovers.” You gave the small bag you were holding a good jostle. “It’s for the dog up there. I have a habit of feeding him every once in a while whenever there’s good scraps.”
Patton eyed you. “If you get bit and infected with rabies, maybe I’ll take your raise. Try and pet it for me, would you?”
“In your dreams, Patton.”
After a few taunts and banter, you left Patton alone. In a few hours, you’d come back to the tavern to work more. Before your mom had been hospitalized, you’d maybe put your extra money to treat yourself to Good Hunter or to buy new clothes.
Of course, while money was one of your many goals, you had other aspirations as well. More than anything, you’d like to resume a humble life in Mondstadt. If you could afford it, then you’d travel to Liyue and sightsee. And then maybe a little further. But you’d always return to Mondstadt. It was just home to you, and you liked home.
You crouched and fed the dog. He pressed his snout into your palm, warm and comforting. You giggled and finished the leftovers from your little sack. As much as Patton wanted you to die of infection, the dog was very tame and kind toward you. He let you brush his fur and scratch behind his ears. If you had enough patience and enough time, you’d teach him to bite Patton.
The next day, you were working with Charles, as per usual. He’d been working here far longer than any of you. You’d been employed here for a while now, and you’d come to know the man quite well after rowdy nights and quiet days in the tavern. He despised a drunk customer as much as you, but whenever you were on shift with him, he always offered to take care of it.
If not you, then Charles would get the nonexistent employee of the year award.
“Just put up a work wanted poster,” Charles said, cleaning a glass. “Judging by our usuals, we won’t get an honest inquiry for it in a while.”
You, who’d been making an apple cider, said, “oh, for the boars?” While you did want to work at the winery for its pleasant view and people, there were boars who’d been uprooting vines and you did not want to tussle with a boar.
“Say, [Name], you heard of the Darknight Hero?”
“Who hasn’t?” you asked. “My friends talk about him all the time. Everyone likes a good mystery around these parts. Have you seen the library? Oh, and the idea of him being handsome isn’t that bad… Do you think he’s rich, Charles?”
Charles snorted. “If he can afford to leave at night to protect Mondstadt, then he must be rich. He’s no worker like us, but he’s definitely noteworthy. He may as well just be an urban rumor, though, so don’t go around trying to seduce him only to get into his pockets.”
“I would never!”
“I saw you make eyes at a customer who was wearing very fine jewelry that could be pawned off for a high price.”
“I liked her eyes. They were kind. Reminded me of a princess from a fairytale.”
Diluc came from upstairs to the first floor. He was the same as he’d always been—closed off, calm, and collected. Fitting. He cast a quick glance at you and Charles before disappearing outside onto the streets of Mondstadt.
“That’s Master Diluc for you,” Charles said. “So elusive you could call him a ghost. A handsome, ghost, that is.”
“I barely know anything about him,” you said. “Elusive is correct, if not absolutely distant.”
“Really? You should talk to him more often.”
There was already a set difference between you and Charles. Firstly, it would be the years working at Angel’s Share. Charles knew Diluc more than you did. You wanted to point this out, but instead you slumped your shoulders. “He’s just so unapproachable, Charles. You wouldn’t understand. That mustache of yours makes you look amicable and agreeable.”
Charles self-consciously twirled the end of his mustache. He looked as if he wanted to say something. He turned back to his work, setting the clean glass down. “You and Master Diluc seem to complement each other, that’s all.”
You were very friendly and a good person underneath all your materialistic values. Had it not been for Diluc’s offstandish personality, maybe you and Diluc would be a little more than boss and employee. Maybe you and Diluc would be friends.
Of course, your main focus was your happiness and sanity. If you’d interacted with Diluc outside of work, you might’ve gone insane. Oh! And money. It was always money. You watched a customer drop a few mora into the tip jar.

Chapter 22.) Reflection.
It′s crazy how you flaunt your passion.
When you let meaning of them worth take over you.
You stare into my soul like that.
Makes me wonder when you ain't get by the side of me.
It′s pain and pleasure.
To love someone so.
So much you, you hate them.
Push me over the edge then.
To go catch you, your love is.
It's bittersweet.
(What you want from me, want, want)
I build you up, then knock you down.
It's bittersweet.
(What you want from me, want, want)
You stay quiet and I get loud.
It′s bittersweet.
It had been 3 days since Naia was rushed to the hospital because of Wolfbane being in her system. Her parents, especially her mother, were both distraught and furious that their daughter had gotten herself caught up in the tireless war between The Pack and The Knights Of Ossory. Those three days felt like years to them. Both took turns sitting vigil over their daughter.
The only saving grace was that her condition hadn't changed. It hadn't gotten better but Laurie and Shane were thankful it hadn't worsened. They just wanted her to open her eyes. Laurie needed her daughter to wake up. She had to hear her voice again. And every moment that she didn't the more she went crazy. Laurie would just sit at Naia’s bedside holding onto her hand and pray Naia would squeeze her hand. The agony of waiting was going to kill her.
“Anything?” her husband asked as he entered the room with coffee in hand.
Laurie just shook her head no.
“It'll happen, baby. It has to. She'll wake up and we'll be able to breathe again.”
She never said a word to him. She just held onto Naia’s hand as Shane set the cup of coffee he brought her down. Laurie's eyes were red and puffy and her face was a mess. She blamed The Pack and The Knights Of Ossory but mostly she blamed herself. She swore to protect her daughter from all of this. To prevent her from going through the hell she went through over 30 years ago. And feels like she failed. A pain no mother wants to go through.
Laurie rubbed Naia’s knuckle silently, willing their daughter to wake up.
“Have you eaten baby?”
Laurie shook her head no.
“You should go eat something baby.”
“I don't want food. I want our daughter. I want her to wake up now.”
Shane sat beside her and placed his hand over hers.
I know, baby. I want that too. I need it. You need it. But it's not good for you not to eat something.”
“I can't leave her! What if she wakes up and I'm not here?! I have to be here!”
Her frantic tone worried Shane.
“Baby listen to me! You need to go eat something. I'll be right here. I will watch over her. If anything happens I swear to you that I will tell you immediately.”
“But Shane—”
“No buts! Go eat something. Now! I won't let anything happen to her. I swear that on my life.”
Laurie looked at him before getting up and going to the door. When she looked back towards Naia, Shane smiled softly at her.
“It's okay baby, I'll keep her safe.”
Laurie nodded sadly before walking out the door.
Shane turned his attention back to their daughter, his worry, resentment, rage, sorrow, protectiveness, and anxiety all on high. His little girl. His flesh and blood. She hadn't moved or spoken since he last saw her. He was thankful for the hospital staff. They were able to get her allergic reaction to Wolfbane under control but she was still unconscious. None of the meds she was on seemed to be working.
It′s so easy to listen.
When your tongue is an innocent prisoner of war oh yeah.
And it might bе wrong but we never еnd that.
Damage is done, always pain and pleasure.
To love someone so.
So much you hate them.
Push me over the edge then.
To go catch you, your love is.
It's bittersweet.
(What you want from me, want, want)
I build you up, then knock you down.
It′s bittersweet.
(What you want from me, want, want)
You stay quiet and I get loud.
It's bittersweet.
It didn't take Laurie long to come back from the cafeteria. When Shane looked up she walked in with food for them both.
“I'm not the only one who needed to eat.”
Shane smiled softly as she handed him a sandwich.
“Still nothing?”
“Still no change. But I'm not giving up.”
Laurie smiled at her husband's resolve. They sat together and ate their food in silence. Their eyes went from Naia to the IV drip machine she was hooked up to.
“Don't worry baby. Our girl will wake up.”
“I know she will. She has to. And when she does…we have to tell her the truth.”
Shane looked at his wife confused.
“Are you sure? Are you sure you’re ready to do that?”
“Look at her Shane! She wouldn't be here, hell we wouldn't even be here if she knew the truth. It's time. So when she wakes up and is lucid enough to hear it we'll tell her everything.”
Shane took his wife's hand in his and gave it a gentle squeeze.
“Okay. If you’re ready and you're sure. Then I am too.”
Laurie offered him a small smile.
Yeah I know you know me.
That′s why you the only one can push my buttons.
Sometimes it's like you speak another language.
Got me like adios buenas noches baby.
Oh it′s pain and pleasure.
To love someone so.
So much you hate them.
Push me over the edge then.
To go catch you, your love is.
It′s bittersweet.
(What you want from me, want, want)
I build you up, then knock you down.
It′s bittersweet.
(What you want from me, want, want)
You stay quiet and I get loud.
It's bittersweet.
(What you want from me, want, want)
I build you up, then knock you down.
It′s bittersweet.
(What you want from me, want, want)
You stay quiet and I get loud.
It's always bittersweet.
While her body was still, Naia was subconsciously awake.
“Naia…”
Naia slowly opened her eyes, and looked around frantically and confusedly. She couldn't see anything or anyone.
“What? Where am I?”
That's when she heard a woman's voice.
“I've been waiting to meet you.”
When Naia turned around she saw a figure she didn't recognize.
“Who’s there? Who are you? What is this place?”
The figure in front of her soon materialized into an elderly black woman. One that she recognized.
“Oh…my…God! You’re…you're…Delia?”
She smiled at Naia.
“Hello, my dear. It's wonderful to finally meet you.”
Naia’s jaw dropped.
“But how?!”
“I thought you…you died a long time ago!”
“I did. 3 years ago.”
“Wait! Am I dead?”
Delia laughed softly.
“No dear, you’re not dead. You are in the world between worlds.”
Naia blinked in realization.
“I was here with Roman. Where is he?! Is he hurt?! Did Trent shoot him?!”
Delia placed a calming hand on Naia’s shoulder.
“All will be revealed shortly. I promise.”
Naia took a shaky breath then nodded.
“Now come sit with me. We have much to discuss.”
Naia followed Delia to a bench that appeared out of nowhere. When they sat down Delia cocked her head to the side at Naia curiously. Making her feel super awkward.
“Is there something on my face?”
“No. I’m just curious about you. You’re as beautiful as I imagined you’d be.”
Naia couldn’t keep the blush from creeping up on her face.
“A ghost just called me beautiful. I must be hallucinating.”
Delia chuckled.
“You said we had much to discuss. What are we discussing?”
“You, my dear. Your connection to the town, the people, and especially Roman.”
“I mean I’ve been in town for a few months. I don’t know anyone outside of my uncle Trent and the Pack.”
Delia nods.
“And what are your impressions of them so far?”
Naia chewed the inside of her cheek.
“Can I be honest with you?”
“Of course dear. That’s why we are here.”
“I understand why my mom doesn’t want me around Roman. Because to be honest, he’s terrifying. But at the same time…I can’t stay away from him. I can’t get enough of him. He makes me feel safe. And loved. And wanted. And I…”
“Yes?”
“I care about him. A lot. But I don't know if I'm ready to give up my life for him. I don't know if I'm ready to be his mate.”
Deli nodded.
“It is a lot to ask of a young woman. I would know.”
“How did you decide Delia? Or was it decided for you?”
Delia chuckles softly.
“It wasn’t my intent to be Xander’s mate when I first came to Hunt’s Peak.”
Naia blinked in confusion.
“You’re not from Hunt’s Peak?”
“No. Originally from the Pittsburgh area.”
“I didn’t know that.”
“I grew up in foster care so it wasn’t like many had missed me when I left.”
“So what brought you to Hunt’s Peak?”
“I was hired as a 5th teacher. I loved my job. Teaching children became my passion.”
“And how did you meet Xander?”
“I’ve always been a Wolfkin and I knew it was my destiny to become the mate to a member of The Pack but I never thought I would be Xander’s mate. But to answer your question, I was walking along the creek when I saw him and his father Ferdinand. We were smitten at first sight.”
“Oh…did his father accept you?”
“Yes, he did. And after some convincing so did his mother Cecilia.”
“When did Xander become Alpha?”
“Shortly after we met. Maybe 6 months or so.”
“Is that when you became his mate?”
“Yes. He courted me until he became Alpha.”
“Courted how?”
Delia smiled as if lost in a memory.
“He would come by the school. Regale my students in wild tales of werewolves as knights and kings and sorceresses and sorcerers. That sort of thing. But the biggest thing he did for me, was he planted a single night flower and let it blossom into a field full of them.”
“Sounds like he was a romantic at heart.”
“He used to be but when he became Alpha, responsibility and obligation replaced flowers and romance.”
“Was it hard?”
“No. Not at first. I always understood my role as The Alpha’s mate. And I cherished it. Becoming a sort of Den Mother gave me a purpose.”
“What changed?”
Delia looked at Naia with a new curiosity.
“He met your mother.”
Naia swallowed.
“Mommy told me how she met him.”
“I remember that. I remember when he told her no at first. I was furious at him. So I not so subtly encouraged him to reconsider not protecting her and your uncle.”
“Why did you do that?”
“Your mother was a child at the time. And your uncle couldn’t protect her as he should have. Only Xander and The Pack could do that.”
“She also told me about the day he offered her The Pack’s protection.”
“I remember when Xander told me about Bobby Giles threatening her. He was furious and I was disgusted. But we both knew that he couldn't just charge into town and rid it of him. Well, he could but it wasn't in his nature at the time. So he sent a few wolves in their human forms to investigate.”
“She told me that too. And the time that Bobby pulled a gun out on Xander.”
Delia snickered.
“The fool. He believed that his gun would scare Xander. But he learned the hard way that day.”
Naia shifted in her seat.
“Mommy showed me the necklace that Xander gave her.”
“I know about that. He gave it to her on her 18th birthday.”
“She also said that she was bonded to him.”
“She's right. She was bonded to him until he died.”
“Are you angry about that?”
Delia went quiet
“To be honest, I was very angry with her. Jaded and bitter even. But I realized after she left that my anger was misplaced.”
“Misplaced how?”
“After she left I found out that Xander was telling her that she was to be his new mate. And at that time your mother was a young impressionable girl.”
“He was manipulating her?”
“Yes, he played with her heart and preyed on it.”
“My God. Why did you stay with him for so long?”
“I was bound by Pack Law to stay with my mate until his death.”
Naia shuddered.
“Will that happen to me?”
“If you choose to be Roman’s mate you are bound by Pack Law to be at his side until his death.”
“Well, that explains what my mom said about you and Xander being married on paper.”
Delia nodded.
“If I was the mate of any other Pack member I could leave. But I was Xander’s mate. As was your mother. As yet…”
“She ran away.”
“Yes.”
“Can you tell me about Xander?”
“What would you like to know?”
“What did he look like?”
Delia waves a hand and a picture of Xander materialized in front of them.
Tumblr media
“Whoa…”
“That is Xander in all his glory.”
“He and Roman look just alike.”
Delia smiled softly.
“Yes. He has his father's looks and stubbornness but he also has my heart.”
“Will I meet Xander?”
“No my dear. You won't.”
“Crisis averted.”
“So, will you be Roman’s mate or will you go back to your life as a human woman?”
Just as Naia was about to speak another panel appeared in front of her and Delia.
“What's this?”
“Roman. He's trying to connect to you through your bond. We are about to look at life through his eyes. These panels that appear are what life is like.”
“Why can’t he connect with me?”
Instead of responding, Delia put a finger to her lips then pointed to the panel. When Naia looked at the panel she was transported into Roman’s mind.
She and Delia were looking at a memory of them.
She had convinced Layla to let her turn Buck’s into a mini-movie theater for the pups and their parents. To give them something fun to do. When Roman heard about it he was both curious and thrilled. The girls decided on watching Lion King. With Gino and popcorn in hand, Naia snuggled next to Roman.
“So this movie is about…cats?”
“The circle of life. And lions.”
“…lions are cats are they not?”
Naia shook her head at the memory before turning to Delia.
“I remember this.”
“Do you?”
“Yes. It was the day I learned that your son doesn’t like my impressions.”
Delia chuckled. They turned back to the memory and as they did, they came upon Naia’s impression of one of her favorite scenes in the movie.
“Hyenas. I hate hyenas. So what’s your plan for getting past those guys?”
“Live bait.”
“Good idea!…hey!”
“Come on Timon, you guys have to create a diversion.”
“What do you want me to do? Dress in drag and do the hula?”
Roman groaned.
“Are you going to be like this the rest of the movie?”
“What? Gino likes my impression. You don’t like my impression?”
“…no.”
“Everyone’s a damn critic.”
Roman rolled his eyes. But he would soon find out which scene is her favorite scene in the whole movie.
“Hey! Who’s the pig?”
“Are you talking to me?”
“Uh oh! Did he call him a pig?”
“Are you talking to me?”
“Shouldn’t have done that!”
“Are you talking to me?!”
“Now they’re in for it!”
“They call me: Mr. Pig!”
And just as she got Pumbaa’s yell Roman clamped a hand to her mouth.
“Beloved…how am I to enjoy this movie you’ve chosen with your incessant talking?”
Naia just giggled as the panel changed to a more recent memory. One that Naia didn’t recognize.
“My…room?”
“Yes, my dear. This was just a few days ago.”
“But I don’t remember this.”
“Because you aren’t there.”
“What?! What do you mean?”
Delia pointed to the panel as it showed Roman walking into her room. He looked distraught as he looked around. Naia could feel his anguish in her chest. When his eyes fell on Gino sitting on the bed, she felt tears on her cheek as he held Gino close to his chest.
“I don’t understand.”
“The one he considers to be his mate is missing.”
“His mate? You mean me?”
“Yes, my dear.”
“But why is he looking for me?”
“Because your bond with him is disrupted. He’s trying to reconnect with you.”
“But why?”
Delia turned back to the panel as it showed Roman in wolf form curled up on her bed with Gino under his jaw. She felt his agony and his pain as well as his longing as he whimpered. He was missing her. He was needing her. Her presence. Her smile. Her laugh. It broke her heart. She stood up shouting to the panel.
“Roman! Roman! I'm here! I'm right here!”
Delia put a hand on her shoulder.
“He can't hear you. This is only a vision of what has already been.”
Naia turned to Delia with pleading in her eyes.
“You said that he couldn’t connect to me, why can’t he connect to me?”
With a wave of a hand another panel appeared. This one showed Naia lying in a hospital bed hooked up to an IV with her mother at her side.
“I–I–I…it can’t be! You said I wasn’t dead!”
“You aren’t Naia. You’ve been injected with Wolfbane. It’s a toxin that can be deadly but thankfully you were taken to the hospital in time to save you.”
“Injected?! How?!”
“You don’t remember?”
Naia stood there confused until it hit her.
“The tranquilizer dart! The one that Trent was using! Am I right?”
Delia nodded.
“If I’m on an IV then why haven’t I woken up?”
“Because the spirits aren’t ready for you to wake up yet.”
“What the hell does that mean?”
Delia looked at Naia.
“Answer this. Why do you think you’re here?”
Naia didn't know how to answer that question.
“I don't know.”
As soon as those words left her mouth another panel appeared. This one was of Trent after he left the hospital. He was in his boss’s office going off about Wolfbane.
“What is wrong with you Moses?!”
“The tranquilizer! You said it was harmless!”
“It is harmless! It effects those beasts and their ability to shift!”
“What about humans?”
“It doesn’t effect humans!”
Trent eyed him with an intense yet calm fury.
“What is Wolfbane?”
Bernard blinked in confusion.
“Where did you hear that name?”
“Answer the question!”
“It’s the name of the tranquilizer. It doesn’t effect humans.”
“Yes it does.”
“No it does not!”
Trent pinched the bridge of his nose.
“Naia was hit by one of the tranquilizer darts.”
“The young woman you brought here the other day?”
“Yes. She collapsed after being hit and is now in the hospital fighting for her life. According to her mother Wolfbane is a poison that you and Xander created.”
Bernard looked at Trent genuinely confused.
“Her mother?”
“I didn't stutter.”
“What was her last name again?”
“Evans.”
“I knew someone with that last name but it was a he not a she.”
“Probably her dad. Her mother’s maiden name is Roberts.”
Bernard’s face lit up.
“Roberts? As in Laurie Roberts? Zane Roberts sister?”
“Yes.”
“I knew that girl looked familiar!”
“What are you talking about?”
“I know her mother. Which means Xander was right. She did run off with Evans. I can’t believe she finally came back home.”
“Is what her mother said true? That you created this with Xander?”
“Yes it is but he took it too far. It wasn’t designed to be lethal. I tried to stop him but you can see what good it did.”
“So Xander truly was a monster?”
“Ohhh yes my boy. A monster indeed.”
As she watched with Delia, Naia wasn’t entirely convinced that Bernard was totally innocent.
“I don’t like him. I don’t trust him.”
“That’s Bernard Sayre for you.”
“Has he always been this way?”
“Oh yes. Even when I was amongst the living he and especially his motives were always questionable.”
“Why does the town let him do what he does?”
“Only the town can answer that.”
“I guess…”
The panel showed Trent in his cabin sitting on his couch with a bottle in his hand. Naia could feel his guilt and shame as well as his anger. His anger at his boss and anger at himself. He didn’t mean to hurt her. She just came out of nowhere. By the time he pulled the trigger it was too late. He didn't see her at first but when she dropped to the ground his heart dropped when she did. He wanted to be there at the hospital with her. To tell her how sorry he was. How much she means to him. How he wishes he could take it all back.
But at that moment he couldn't. All he could do was wallow in his festering grief and simmering anger. The same as Roman. This war had taken away a lot for both of them but this was the final straw. Trent wasn't about to lose to Roman again. And Roman had finally had enough of Trent being a thorn in his side. Both had subconsciously decided that this was an all-out war.
All of it broke Naia.
“They aren't serious are they?”
“Yes. Both are hurt and angry. Both at themselves and each other.”
“But I don't want this! I don't want them fighting!”
“Then you've found your reason for being here.”
“What do you mean?”
“You asked me why you were brought here. My dear, you were brought here to heal what is broken.”
“You mean Roman and Trent?”
“And your family. Your mother, especially.”
“Mommy?”
“Yes. She is hurting. And angry. And confused. And you are the key to healing her wounds. And theirs.”
Naia nodded.
“How do I do that?”
“You can start by answering your mother’s prayer.”
Delia turned back to the panel that showed Laurie. When Naia looked up, her mother was holding the necklace that Xander gave her. She looking out of the window to the moon in the sky.
“Spirits of the earth,
I don't know if you can hear me or that I even have the right to ask this. But I come to you with a simple prayer. I ask you to heal my daughter. She doesn't deserve to be here. She doesn't deserve this. She's innocent. If you're angry with me for abandoning The Pack and my duties as Xander’s mate I understand. But I beg you! Don't make my daughter suffer because of me. I beg you, please bring her back to me. Let her eyes open again. Let her speak again. I just want my little girl back. I need her back. Please! Heal her.”
Delia turned to Naia with a question.
“Now that you know your purpose, are you ready my dear?”
“Yes. I am ready to heal all that is broken.”
Delia waved her hand and the panels disappeared. They were replaced by a doorway.
“Then go. Your mother is waiting for you.”
“Thank you, Delia.”
Delia smiled at her.
“You're welcome, my dear. Tell my son that I miss him and that I love him and that I'm sorry.”
Naia smiled at her.
“I will.”
Naia stepped through the doorway and was transported back to her hospital room, just as her mother finished praying. She had moved her head slightly which both startled and excited Laurie.
“Naia? Naia baby are you awake?”
Naia’s eyes fluttered open and when she spoke her voice was weak.
“Mommy…”
Laurie had tears in her eyes.
“I'm here baby. I'm right here.”
Laurie was overcome with joy and relief.
“You came back to me!”
“I missed you, mommy.”
“I missed you too, baby girl.”
“We…have…much…to…talk…about.”
Laurie nodded resolutely.
“Yes, we do. It's time for you to know the true reason why I left.”

Devildom Easter Egg Hunt
A little late, but the idea came to me at like 11pm last night and I'm old and suck at staying up late these days.
Anyway, Easter in the Devildom. With my MC Kore, because I missed writing about her.
Warnings: Female MC, Not a reader insert, polyamory, way too much description of baskets of chocolate, that's it.
“What the hell are ya wearing Kore?”
Tumblr media
“Everyone come to the council room after classes, it’s important.” That’s what the text had said. The one sent from your phone to all of the brothers, and all three residents of Purgatory Hall. It was more than a little suspicious, for one Kore never wanted to stay longer at RAD than she really had to, and secondly she was usually much more polite when requesting a favour. But to use the council room she must have gained Diavolo’s permission so it couldn’t be anything too bad right? At least, that’s how they reassured themselves before turning up. Whatever scenarios they had planned out, none of them came close to what greeted them in the council room.
She looked down for a moment, before grinning back at Mammon. “You don’t recognise it?”
“I believe what Mammon means is why are you wearing that?” Lucifer sighed, shaking his head at the younger demon who had been momentarily rendered speechless.
“Well…” She started, still smiling happily at them all, “it’s Easter in the human realm, and since I already had the bunny costume on hand from that serving job we did, I thought I could share some of the festivities with you all. Technically I’m a bit late, Easter was yesterday, but I wanted Dia, um, Lord Diavolo to be able to join in and he wasn’t back until last night.”
The Prince in question was standing behind her beaming happily, nodding along with everything Kore said. “Now now Lucifer, no need to look so grumpy. I think it’s wonderful Kore wanted to bring something from the human realm to all of us!”
“But, that doesn’t explain why yer wearing that!” Mammon huffed. “Anyone could see ya like that!”
“Mammon… everyone already has seen me in this? And you’re all here anyway.” She shrugged. “In the human realm there’s an easter tradition where a rabbit brings chocolate eggs to kids. I know you’re not kids, but it seemed like fun. I organised an egg hunt and everything!”
“Did you say chocolate?”
“Yes Beel, chocolate eggs. The ones for the egg hunt aren’t, because it would give you an unfair advantage, but the prizes are chocolate eggs.” She laughed, pointing to the small pile of baskets behind her. “No touching until we’re done.”
Beel pouted a little, but stared determinedly at the baskets. Levi frowned beside him.
“So, this is a game? Are there clues?” His eyes flashed with interest, games he could do.
“Not really, I can give you some if you’re stuck though!” Kore laughed. “So, I hid 60 eggs, with Barbatos’ help so he’s going to stay here and keep me company guarding the prize baskets. He isn’t allowed to tell anyone where they are, including you Dia, and you agreed to not ask him.” Diavolo nodded. “So, the rules are; no magic,” she nodded towards Solomon and Lucifer, “no stealing from other people, if they found the egg it’s theirs,” a few sideways glances towards Mammon, “and no fighting. Everyone got that?”
There were assorted nods and murmurs of acceptance from the gathered Demons and Angels.
“Don’t look so pouty Luci, you don’t have to join in if you don’t want to. You can still have a basket of chocolates.”
Lucifer huffed. “Of course I’m taking part. But you neglected to tell us where the eggs had been hidden, unless you mean for us to search the whole Devildom?”
Kore blushed and shook her head. “Sorry! They’re in RAD, the Castle and their grounds. I would have hidden them in the House of Lamentation and Purgatory Hall but I didn’t get time between classes and Barb had duties to fulfill.”
“Then can we begin?”
She nodded at Lucifer. “The inaugural Devildom Easter Egg Hunt is go! Good Luck!”
Kore leaned back against the table, watching with amusement as the group scattered, most heading for the door to scour the school. Simeon and Luke stayed back, opting to look around the council room first instead. Simeon glanced down at Luke, standing on his tiptoes to try and peer over one of the taller plinths and sighed.
“Kore?”
She glanced over at the angel. “What is it Simeon?”
“Would it be permissible to work in teams for this game?” He nodded towards Luke, expression fond as ever.
“Of course Simeon! It’s not really as serious as all that, I only put the rules in place so no one spoiled the fun by magicking all the eggs to them or getting into a fight. It’s just for fun.” She giggled, patting one of the prize baskets. “Besides, I’d put money on Beel and Belphie already teaming up. Even if it’s just from Belphie’s laziness.”
As if on queue a shout echoed through the room from the corridor. “Oi! Ya not allowed to work together like that!”
“Kore never said working together was against the rules!”
“Mammon, let them be. Belphie isn’t likely to be much help when Beel is carrying him.”
Kore burst into laughter, shaking her head at their antics. “Well, I would wish you luck again Simeon, but I don’t think you’re in the most need of it.”
He chuckled in response, heading over to the younger angel to guide him out of the room. “Indeed, come on Luke. See you later Kore.”
She nodded, in response, leaning back and listening to the echoing voices through the halls as Barbatos came to sit beside her, letting her lean her shoulder against his.
That was how they found them two hours later, when all of the eggs had been collected and the hunters returned to the room, Kore tucked against Barbatos’ side giggling at something he’d told her while his arm rested around her waist.
“Ah, I’m glad to see you weren’t too bored while we were searching for eggs!” Diavolo boomed, chuckling at the sight before them.
Kore flushed bright pink, head shooting up to stare at the gathered group with wide eyes. Her gaze shifted quickly over Mammon and Levi, smiling softly at them to try and ease the tension from them. There would likely be time for a discussion later, but she was pleased to see neither jumped to chase Barbatos away from her, polyamory was hardest for the two of them but they were growing, learning.
“You should know already that Barbatos is excellent company.” She chuckled, shaking her head. “Go on then, how many eggs have you all collected?”
They handed over their eggs, letting Kore note down how many each had carefully before the next person handed theirs over. She paused half way through, looking at the ones Beel and Belphie handed over with a small frown.
“Um, Beel, why is this one half of an egg?” She asked, holding the slightly mangled object in her palm.
Beel rubbed the back of his neck, refusing to meet her gaze. “I, um, forgot you said they weren’t chocolate and I got hungry.”
“It was lucky he didn’t swallow it whole.” Belphie grumbled.
Kore giggled and nodding, noting down their score.
Once all the eggs were counted Kore jumped from the table ready to announce the scores.
“Alright gentlemen, the scores for the inaugural Devildom Easter Egg hunt are in! I’ll be going in ascending order of score, last place to first okay?” There were a few nods. “Okay, last place with two eggs is Asmo,”
“I knew I shouldn’t have stopped to fix my hair.”
“6th place is Solomon with three eggs, not bad, joint 5th place are Satan and the team of Simeon and Luke with five eggs each,”
“Well done Luke, you found most of those for us! I’d have been last without your help.”
“Damn, if Lucifer hadn’t beaten me up that tree using his stupid wings…”
Kore paused. “Wait, you climbed a tree Satan?!”
“Don’t worry Kore, I have it all on video. I may not have found many eggs, but I did capture most of the best moments on camera. Satan was very cat-like.”
“Thank you Solomon, I’ll be getting all of those from you later.” She grinned, looking back to the list. Okay, so 4th place is Lucifer with seven eggs. Then in joint 3rd place we have Mammon and Diavolo with eight eggs each, congratulations both of you,”
“I guess third place ain’t too bad. At least I beat Lucifer.”
“Oh excellent! I think that was very good for my first Easter Egg Hunt, don’t you?”
“Yes Dia, that’s a very respectable score. In 2nd place with ten eggs is Levi,”
“Damn, I guess it’s not bad for a game that involved physical activity…”
“Which means in 1st place is the team of Beel and Belphie with twelve eggs. Congratulations you two.”
“It was pretty much all Beel.” Belphie yawned. “As soon as he knew there was food on the line I mostly just napped.”
“Honestly I’d have been very impressed if anyone beat Beel in a competition that involved winning something edible.” Solomon chuckled.
“Alright, so Beel, Belphie, you get first choice of the Easter baskets.” Kore smiled, gesturing towards the table behind her.
“Are they not all the same then?”
“No Luke, they’re all the same value but the contents differ slightly. Different shops and types of chocolate. Some just have big eggs, there’s a couple with lots of small things, some are a mix of everything… you know? Also Barbatos baked a couple of treats, so there’s one in each basket too.”
“You put a lot of thought into this.” Diavolo hummed. “It’s very impressive Kore.”
She rubbed the back of her neck, looking down at the floor. “Well, Barb helped a lot, and… um, I just wanted to make sure it was fun?”
“You did an excellent job on your own, I merely offered a helping hand.” Barbatos sighed, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. “Do not sell yourself short Kore.”
“Ah… Thank you. Okay guys, pick your baskets.”
Beel, to the surprise of no one, picked a basket full of large eggs, Belphie went for one with small sheep shaped chocolates. Levi picked a basket with a mix, including some small pink flower shaped chocolates that looked just like ones from an episode of the anime he watched the week before. Mammon’s basket also had a mix, mostly white chocolates dusted with golden sheen. Diavolo picked a basket of large eggs, dark, white and milk with intricate decorations across their surface. Lucifer’s basket of choice was filled with the darkest chocolate, more bitter than sweet and perfect with coffee. Simeon and Luke picked matching baskets, large and small chocolates in marbled milk and white. Satan’s basket was small chocolates, full of unique flavours and combinations. The final two baskets were fairly similar, a mix of sizes and types, though Asmo’s leant more towards fruity flavours than Solomon’s. With all the baskets collected Kore grinned at them.
“Happy Easter everyone!” She paused, glancing over at Barbatos. “Oh, Barb, your basket should be in your room.”

Did anyone else know Kamilah had an entire building as offices set up in pretty much every major city, or was she supposed to just… like… find this out on her own?
Walking through the doorway into a near-exact replica of the woman’s New York penthouse should feel like a relief. Between the practically-identical furniture and layout to the fact that Nadya’s pretty sure she hasn’t let go of some part of Kamilah since they had managed to get that awful cage open; she’d even go so far as to say it should feel like home.
But it doesn’t.
And even though she over-thinks every possible reason until her head hurts, Nadya just can’t figure out why.
“You’re sure they’re okay?” She asks again; not because something might have changed in the five minutes since she last pressed about how Brandon and Greer had gotten out of the Order’s raid alive, but because the repetition helps make it feel a little more real.
Only Jax has clearly reached his limit on the matter. “For the last time, yes. A few cuts and bruises but surprisingly they held their own. I keep telling you I got them out myself but since you refuse to believe me…”
“No no,” hastily, swallowing around her dry mouth, “I do. I just…”
“Blame yourself?”
And it’s clear from even the tiniest glance that’s not a weight she’s carrying alone. Not saying that makes it easier, but…
A familiar touch brushes through her hair and Nadya leans into it on instinct. Kamilah’s fingertips tickle the spot underneath her ear and the tension just sort of… oozes out of her shoulders. “I’ve arranged for their recovery in a safe place. One that cannot be connected to any of us, and free of our kind entirely.”
There’s a knowing glint in her eye when Nadya finally looks up. Thank god, if she could cry any more she just might, that means Gerard made it out okay.
They haven’t even sat down and already Adrian is ducking out onto the balcony, new burner phone already pressed to his ear and a familiar worry etched into his frown.
“I guess Serafine was friends with the owner of the club where you were…” Cadence doesn’t say the words ‘attacked,’ ‘kidnapped,’ or any variation thereof for which Nadya is immensely grateful. “So when we had a solid lead on where you two had been taken, Adrian all but insisted she stay behind and help see to the injured.”
She’s almost hesitant to ask. “How did you find us, anyway?”
After all, the ride back to central London had been long. Well… long for a starving vampire and an exhausted human anyway. The Order had gotten them at least an hour out before the rescue team had swooped in and saved the night.
Her question is met with a long pause. Any other time Nadya might have guessed he was just gearing up for one of his long-winded explanations of this tracking method or that mysterious contact in the shadows. Not this time though.
Not when he pauses mid-step and knocks his shin into the dark-stained wooden corner of the coffee table.
She tries to meet his eyes but something off near the kitchen is far more important. Nadya glances over her shoulder to the sight of Kamilah in the doorway, frozen like a statue with an expression just as stony.
She catches the faintest shake of the woman’s head right before Cadence plasters on a smile a little too wide to be sincere.
“That doesn’t matter now. You’re safe, so best not to dwell.”
“Bullshit.” mutters Lily beside her, and Nadya reaches up to pet her head on her shoulder in solidarity.
There are definitely more questions to ask.
Questions like where the hell did Kamilah come from?
Or weren’t Cade and Serafine supposed to be leading their hunters on a false trail towards literally anywhere else?
And, possibly the most dire of them all, how close are those same hunters now that we’re all in a pretty conspicuous not-so-safe house?
All of them good questions, objectively. But they will have to wait.
Kamilah returns from the kitchen bearing a sterling silver serving tray. Steam and the familiar scent of Gerard’s favorite herbal tea tickles at the tip of her nose; she’s grabbing for it before the tray even meets the table.
Beside the cup and saucer is a blood bag, and not for the first time does Nadya find herself wondering why they didn’t think to hide out here sooner.
You’d think with the scabbing skin still slightly smoky around her wrists and the clear bags under her eyes that Lily would dive into the offered meal like it’s Taco Tuesday… which is something Nadya will now never be able to unsee, which is awesome. She doesn’t though.
Doesn’t even reach for it. Just stares at the thick plastic and how it catches the light overhead silent and transfixed.
And Lily’s not the only one.
Across from them Kamilah sits, rigid and alert. Jax grasps the back of an armchair with white knuckles and a set jaw. Even Cadence bites at his thumb nail with nerves he’s probably not even conscious of.
Nadya sets her teacup down to quell the sudden tremor in her grip.
It’s obvious from the sweat on her upper lip and the slits that were her pupils that Lily needs this.
What she doesn’t need is the pressure.
“Am I supposed to be waiting for Raines to nab a seat for the show?” She bites out, fangs clenched together. She’s making a conscious effort to keep her lips over her top row of teeth which muddles her words a bit.
Unfortunately nobody seems to get the hint to back off but Cadence, who silently decides to go join Adrian instead… with the balcony door closed firmly behind him.
Kamilah and Jax exchange a long look. No words; just quirked eyebrows and Kamilah’s inclined head.
Jax takes his cue and comes around to sit, elbows on his knees and every inch of the ‘stern parental figure’ look resolute on his weary face.
“It was life or death — for all of us. No plan, no escape; I want you to know I think you did the right thing, no matter what. It was kill or be killed.”
Familiar words for them all. They make Nadya’s hand clench into a fist on her lap. She shoves it between her legs at the knees.
This isn’t about her right now.
Lily raises her chin defensively. “You got a point there, Jax?”
Oooh this is bad. Very very baaaad.
“I saw something during the fight.” He laces his fingers together between his spread legs. “And it might’ve just been the chaos, the adrenaline… But if there’s even a chance it wasn’t…”
“Lemme clear that up for you.”
Lily snatches the bag faster than Nadya can blink. Faster than Kamilah and Jax seem to have expected, too; judging by their startled looks.
Faster than a vampire her age and in her condition should be moving, in summary.
She holds nothing back. Brighter eyes a little too much on the edge of carnal looking at the promise of sustenance with glee right before she sinks both sets of fangs in deep. It pops and ruins all future mental images of water balloons for Nadya in the process. But even through her messy eating Lily doesn’t spill a single drop.
Jax leans back and sighs with something like relief, but everything else on his face says the complete opposite. “It was just a flash,” he mumbles as if to himself, “and with everything going on I swore it was a trick of the lights. But then they took you and…”
“The Order is not in the habit of leaving survivors,” Kamilah explains for him; and she would know, “let alone taking captives.”
Lily drops the bag into her lap when she finishes — when there’s literally nothing left inside. Like… not even the weird little blood bubbles left. She looks like she wants to rip it open like a bag of hot cheetos and lick the insides just in case.
On the plus side, her wounds are already starting to heal. New skin fresh and practically glowing.
And thankfully not tinged that Feral-like grey.
“Well they’re good at it, habit or not. Their tech is so high it makes high tech look like dial-up.” She rubs at her wrists; the ghost of the memory dark in her now-human eyes. “And it sucked butts and all but…” how is there a ‘but’ to this of all things?I
“But even I’m not gonna say it wasn’t probably the only thing that kept us alive in the end. So. That’s all I’ll give them — only because we didn’t, you know, get shipped off to some vampire-Guantanamo Bay.”
A heavy silence hangs over them then. Nadya can’t even imagine what the club must look like now — what it must have looked like when Adrian and Jax had finished their share of the fight only to look up, look around, and see no sign of either of them. All the ash, all the bodies… and one of them, Nadya remembers with much displeasure, that she was even responsible for.
Kamilah doesn’t let the moment doesn’t last long though. Good, she really doesn’t need that flashback right now.
“Now that we’ve come to the inevitable source of tension,” she hesitates; rocks pretty much everyone else’s world because no one would ever look at Kamilah Sayeed and consider she was even capable of feeling uncomfortable like she is right now, “perhaps now is the time for explanations of your own.”
And she looks to Lily as she says it but that’s not where she ought to be focusing that judging eye of hers. So Nadya bites the bullet and waves her hand slightly — the shaking helps it look a little more sincere. “Actually, Kamilah, if you’re looking for someone to blame that… that would be me.”
Neither Lily or Jax come to her defense. That tells Kamilah all she needs to know about whether Nadya’s serious or simply blaming herself as per usual. She shifts on her cushion; crosses one leg over the other at the knee and keeps her spine almost uncomfortably straight.
Not that any of her proper etiquette could even begin to prepare her for this. She forces the slight furrow from her brow before she speaks again.
“Very well Nadya. As succinctly as possible, if you would.”
But there’s really no succinct way to go about describing what went down in the King’s Manor. From trying to keep Adrian’s privacy by glossing over his meltdown that led the crypt-Ferals to find and surround them all to how badly Nadya had gotten injured during their escape; to everything still kinda fuzzy but no less terrifying about their confrontation with the Duchess in the cathedral and… and what all that had meant…
Kamilah holds up a calm hand to interrupt her. Nadya closes her mouth so fast her teeth click on the still-swollen part of her cut lower lip. She winces but toughs it out.
“You’re sure you weren’t caught between the reality of the moment and a memory? You actually spoke to a…” But she can’t say it. Even Kamilah’s surprised she can’t say it. Sure it breaks all the rules they’ve known for centuries and implies terrible horrible tragic things — lives that could have been saved and fates that could have been changed — but that’s just another Tuesday for them.
So she just nods once. After a glance to Jax and Lily and their unnerving solemnity… still, Kamilah struggles to wrap her mind around the concept.
“I see. Please… continue.”
The color drains from Nadya’s face when she realizes what comes next. Thankfully Kamilah takes it as her usual anxiety; there’s an empathy lurking in the cool depths of her eyes that says I understand, you’ve been through so much, and I wasn’t there to protect you that Nadya feels more than understands. But that’s more than enough… or it would be if that were the thing she didn’t want to talk about.
Jax clears his throat and comes to her rescue. “We figured it was a long shot. But if whatever makes her blood special was strong enough to undo centuries of insanity on a fully-fledged Feral, then maybe it was strong enough to stop Lily from getting to that point at all.”
We. He means Cynbel of course.
But Kamilah looks rattled enough. The last thing they need is her going outside for a breather and pushing Cadence over the balcony railing.
So with Jax’s help they manage to piece together a sound-enough truth for the vampiress that she doesn’t feel the gaping holes in their memories. One that gives importance to the things that matter, like Lily and her shiny new fangs and the importance of their discovery.
And one that omits things like Nadya accidentally did the thing you were afraid of from the moment you met the man, the thing you wouldn’t tell anyone about; the reason the Trinity is tangled up in all this and puts us last in terms of millennia-old vampires on our side.
At the end of it all nobody knows what to expect, least of all Nadya. She has fifteen different kinds of apologies on the tip of her tongue and runs the risk of all of them spilling out at once.
Kamilah doesn’t let her get nearly that deep in, though.
She turns bodily back to Lily with indescribably scrutiny. “And how do you feel, then?”
“Do I feel like a monster, you mean?”
“No,” she continues clipped; terse, “if I had even an inkling to that being the case you would not be here as you are. But think back to your… first Turning.”
It settles around them thickly in the air that there’s a very good chance nobody in the history of vampire-kind has ever said that and meant it the way Kamilah does now. The importance of it gives her the responsibility to continue. “How does it feel this time; knowing what you are, what has made you this way? My concern here, Lily, is the threat you may unknowingly pose to yourself more than any threat you may be to others. The latter can be dealt with easily.
“But if you feel different? If your soul feels… different, then we must act now in the early days. While we still can.”
Act now. What a kind way to imply such a terrible deed.
Lily throws a sideways glance at Nadya before she speaks. After all they’d already had this talk, right? “I do feel different,” and she cuts Jax off before he can even open his mouth with a finger held up and a shake of her head, “no, I have the right to finish. Because I do feel different. I am different. But I don’t feel any less like myself Kamilah, and I know that’s what you mean.”
“The answer need not be so plainly given. In fact I think we would all prefer if you took time to be absolutely certain.”
“It’s my soul and my body. I think I’m pretty fucking certain.” There’s a harder edge to her voice now. Anger bubbling beneath the surface but not in a way that bares teeth or fangs. Just real and pure anger — the kind without an outlet. “I may not have had a choice in anything that’s happened to me so far but I do now. So either you take my answer here and now or you never really planned on believing me anyway.”
It’s a bold accusation. Makes Kamilah blink, lips pursed… before she gives Lily a short and curt nod.
“Very well. The only one fully able to doubt you is yourself. Especially given your… circumstances.”
Lily clicks her tongue in a “tch,” at the word but that’s all. No, really, that’s all. Everyone’s content to drop it there not just because they have nothing more to say but because they don’t want to add to it.
Things are tense enough as it is.
A tension which breaks when the balcony door slides open and the four of them watch Adrian and Cadence return with a hesitant melancholy. Kamilah quirks an inquiring look at Adrian; he runs his palm down his face with a heavy-hearted sigh.
“She wants to stay and help as much as she can,” he answers her unasked question about Serafine and her whereabouts, “and just asked me to call if we had a solid lead on what to do next. She’s pushing herself a little too hard, but I get where she’s coming from. Even if I wish she’d take it easy.”
Kamilah’s brow furrows. “The final confrontation with Antony left her with more than a simple injury. But alas, I can’t say I’m surprised at her tenacity.”
Antony. Just the man’s name brings all the events in Paris flooding back to the front of Nadya’s mind. The Order was a looming threat — probably now more than ever too — but the immediate one was like… two thousand times worse.
Four thousand if they’re counting Isseya alongside.
“So you’ve caught them up then,” asks Cadence, “on… everything?”
He gives a particular look Nadya’s way that she’s very much not a fan of. It gives her a gut feeling she’d thought—hoped, fleetingly—that they had left behind when they fled Paris. The one where everyone around her knows something about her that she doesn’t know — something they’re trying to spare her from.
Her stomach gurgles in agreement as all the knots start to collide with each other. She slides a hand over her middle and looks away from him before it gets any worse.
Kamilah face twitches in the barest flicker of irritation; schooling her expression with practiced ease but that’s just another mask. Just another cover-up. “I had not yet found the opportunity… Cadence.” She says his name in the same clipped and terse way Serafine does. Like her tongue is trained to know better. Her brain not falling for a trick played on her eyes. But that’s not the case anymore.
“I’m hoping it has something to do with why Isseya led us to believe Gaius had executed you.”
There’s an unfinished argument in the way Adrian looks at his mentor and friend. Kamilah tucks a strand of hair behind her ear and nods. “Indeed. I promised you answers when the time was right.”
“When we got Nadya and Lily back.”
“Yes—that needed to remain paramount to anything you may feel compelled to do in the near future.” When I tell you what I know, that’s what she doesn’t say. And she’s definitely got their attention now. All of them watching, waiting; silent and with Nadya on bated breath.
“It was an unnecessary evil; one I would not have gone through with had I any other choice. But we knew the fight was lost — that we had been betrayed by some of our last contacts in the Northeast. Between Miss Espinoza and myself —”
“Why isn’t she with you?”
Lily interrupts unabashedly. Judging by the look bordering on sympathy Kamilah gives her (disturbing in and of itself but about this… well there’s a brand new knot that joins the rest) she was expecting this to happen.
“Because she knew one of us needed to stay behind, much like before when it was you who we sent on ahead.”
“Why does that feel like a cop out excuse?”
“Because it doesn’t nearly begin to paint the picture of the truth.”
“You’re one of the handful of oldest bones roaming the earth Kamilah,” Lily snaps, though she catches herself — her anger — and does her best to reel it in before they have to revisit their earlier talk too darn soon, “excuse me for not believing that out of the pair of you she was the one could do more good if she stayed behind.”
There’s a war across Jax’s expression, half a thought forming on his lips before Kamilah raises a soft hand to stay him.
“No, she’s right. And that continues to weigh heavy on my conscience. But if you would let me continue then perhaps you may find comfort in the nobility in her actions rather than the cowardice in mine.”
Lily mulls it over with grinding teeth. She does eventually relent; sagging against her seat with her arms over her chest. That blue cuff Nadya bought her on their first night in Paris caught between thumb and forefinger like a totem that doesn’t quite bring the peace it should.
“As long as you’re aware of your being a coward.”
“Kamilah’s many things — but a coward…” Adrian looks to her like she’ll pick up defending herself where he leaves off. She doesn’t. So he falls quiet as well, falls in line just like the rest of them. They’ve done enough interrupting.
Anyone else, asks Kamilah silent and with nothing but a single raised eyebrow. No one dares, not now.
“It was not an ideal decision, nor was it the smartest. But we were forced to choose the lesser of two evils. Either we could act impulsive and with little thought and hope it would be enough to skirt by, or we could stand and do nothing, be nothing, and watch every effort to fight back be reduced to nothing before our very eyes.
“I said already that we had no allies left. That is only partially true. None that we could fully trust… but in dire circumstances one does what they must to keep their eye not on the battle, but on the war.” She takes a moment for herself; a long silence before she manages to look Adrian in the eye with the weight of her remorse. “I convinced Marcel to grant me access to the secret tunnels beneath his castle upstate.”
“That’s where Gaius is holding his Court, isn’t it?” Nadya asks; and earns herself a genuinely surprised look from Kamilah.
“Yes. How did you know?”
“It’s a long story…” Please don’t make me tell it now.
And she’s grateful that Kamilah doesn’t. Because she gets it. “It seems most of them are these days…” But back to this one for now.
“I hope he will find it in his heart one day to forgive me. We’ve known one another for many centuries, Marcel and I. But needs must.”
Adrian rubs his mouth slowly, like he can feel her guilt in his bones. “At least tell me it was worth it.”
She nods; the entire room sighs in relief.
“Gaius holds his Court in much the same way he used to. The same pomp and fanfare but with different faces in the same roles. Priya sits at his side as some self-appointed princess,” and Kamilah is well within her rights to sneer the word like she does, “while Cecil’s men act as some adjunct guard service. Marcel is there, as was to be expected. And rarely is Valdemaras allowed to stray from his sight.”
Cadence shifts uncomfortably at the name. “The few times I got Isseya to open up, she made it sound like he was being held hostage. Insurance, almost.”
“If there’s one thing Gaius excels at it is finding the weaknesses of others and exploiting them to his own ends. I won’t say the Trinity are without fault; they haven’t exactly made it difficult to determine what they care about the most…”
And in a startling turn of events she actually does the exact opposite of what Nadya would expect of the Kamilah they had left behind. She’d fully anticipated the woman turning away both literally and symbolically; angling her own weaknesses away from Nadya where they’re the most vulnerable.
Instead she and Nadya lock eyes across the table. Pain, frustration, relief deep enough in honey-flecked irises and pupils dark and deep enough for her to drown in. Wouldn’t be a bad way to go, would it?
“But in this case their cooperation is just as damning as their complacency.” The moment passes. Nadya watches her walls go back up from the outside.
“I’m all for a bit of recon,” cracking his knuckles for something to ease his nerves, Jax leans in before she can resume, “but get to the point Kamilah. What the hell does Gaius want with Nadya?”
She doesn’t immediately answer. Adrian, though, looks at the younger vampire like he’s grown a second head. “What would possibly make you think it has anything to do with Nadya?”
What makes you think it doesn’t?
“What about this points to literally anything else, Raines?” Jax answers with a question of his own. One of the few rare times he and Nadya seem to be on the same page about all this.
Before he can make things worse Adrian bites his tongue. That he doesn’t have an answer is written in the worry lines on his fact.
“The guy sent two millennias-old vampires to hunt her down. Her, not you or Sayeed or anyone in this room who could actually pose a threat to him.” There’s a second where he almost looks like he might give Nadya the no offense card but she just avoids eye contact instead.
He’s fine with that. “I’ve had coincidences enough in the last few months for several lifetimes over. This, Kamilah suddenly showing up in the middle of it, isn’t one of them.
“Is it, Sayeed?”
“No, Jax, it’s not.” Though she might have put it in kinder terms; tried to spare certain mortals in the room.
“Then get to the damn point.”
Before things hit a boiling point Nadya coughs into her fist; fake and loud and with more voice than necessary but it works so that’s all that matters. “I can handle it Kamilah,” like she’s got any idea if that’s what holds the woman back; she doesn’t — but this is bigger than her, “I bet it doesn’t even make it in my top 3 of weird since we left.”
She tries to break a smile and ends up with a weak and strained grimace instead.
“Very well. Nadya, Gaius wants you returned to him, at his Court and in front of his subjects, alive and human.”
“I kn—”
“Because he plans to kill you. He plans to Turn you himself.”

Paris, Several Nights Ago…
“All the risks I have taken for you and you still return here?”
She keeps her voice to a low hiss in his ear; a viper full of venom in her fangs despite how she seems very intent on crushing him like some type of constrictor.
Not that she needs to whisper. Doubtful that their accomplices on either side of the fight can hear or see much beyond their frenzied duel somewhere around the alley corner. Steel scrapes against steel and rings out like church bells. Followed by the now-familiar battle cry of Serafine as she rushes in for the kill.
A kill she always tries for — yet always seems to fall short of the mark.
But even with Antony out of immediate sight Isseya doesn’t pull her punches when she sends Cadence flying back into the nearest building wall. His neck cracks uncomfortably, the brick behind him split in several places and just barely indented with his large and sprawling frame. But he shakes it off like he has all of her other attacks. He really has no choice but to do anything else.
He tries to look apologetic as he brushes red dust from the shoulders of his jacket. “It’s just the way things worked out, Isseya.”
“Don’t say my name.”
“I —” He can never tell with her. In Prague she was benevolent. In Rome she speared a rather heavy branch just a couple inches from his heart. In Venice she had him pinned against the wall, could very well have snapped his neck into unconsciousness or the unthinkable worse, but had pressed her lips hard-near-bruising to his temple before vanishing into the night instead.
Why is it they always end up grappling with one another, leaving Serafine and Antony to continue their seemingly endless duel? It makes sense in Cadence’s head that they’d get better results if they switched dance partners.
Another scraaape of swords comes from one alley over. If he’s going to try and convince her now is about the last chance he has left.
“You don’t have to keep doing this.”
“Says a man who has nothing to lose.”
“I think we both know that’s not the case.”
Isseya grits her fangs. Suddenly she can’t look him in the eyes. “If you wish to waste the windows of opportunity I give you, Cadence, then there’s nothing more I can do.”
He watches and waits; sees her momentary distraction for the advantage as it is and strikes. He pins Isseya to the other side of the narrow alley, forearm pushed tight against her throat. A move meant to hold her still more than anything else; one of those moments Serafine calls him foolish for.
The ones where he tries to reason with a woman who has none left to give.
“You could have killed Antony a dozen times over by now,” he growls, “but you cling to the lie that Gaius’ way is the only way. Why, Isseya? Why won’t you… Why won’t you let me help you?”
His voice cracks at the end. They both notice, thankfully they can both ignore it too — what with the seconds they have left alone ticking down faster and faster.
There it is — just a flicker, but that doesn’t make it any less real. The smallest chip in her composure; proof that every effort in every city, every bruise and broken bone and every pleaded attempt he’s mustered hasn’t been for nothing… not quite yet.
“Because I cannot lose another,” her voice a whisper on his skin, “I would not survive it. I can still save him even if… even if…”
Even if you are lost to me forever.
Isseya shoves him back.
Cadence lets her, god help him if you ask him why.
“Antony’s a smart man,” she says instead; it takes the other a moment to realize she’s continuing a conversation they had started more than a week ago. In an alley much like this on the far side of Berlin, “he figured out a long time ago that you two are nothing but distractions meant to divert our course. No doubt he is all but convinced I had something to do with your first escape… but without proof he won’t risk my beloved’s wrath.
“Not with something as valuable as the Bloodkeeper —”
“Nadya.”
“What?”
Cadence huffs through clenched teeth. “Her name is Nadya. She’s a person, not a thing. So stop saying that word like it keeps her from being a living, breathing human being.”
Whatever he had expected her to do, it couldn’t have been close to the laugh his words elicit. Nor how Isseya looks at him with her chin raised and a newfound challenge in her eyes.
“I love it when you do that.”
She steps forward. Cadence steps back. The brick molds perfectly against him like a shadow.
“Do what, exactly?”
“That,” with a flippant gesture, “that thing where you’re so unlike him without even trying. It makes it easier to keep up the chase.” Just like it will make it easier to end things the same way.
Over their heads a shadow eclipses the moon. The pair look up to see the rapidly-moving forms of their companions, still locked in an argument all their own that will soon inevitably catch the attentions of one or more late-night Parisians.
“If Antony knows the others are long gone then why do you continue tracking us?” He snaps in her face to draw Isseya’s attention. There’s a sickening feeling Cadence can’t place — like this will be the last time he’ll be able to get anything out of her until the tides turn. “Why not continue your mission?”
He takes advantage of the proximity between them and searches her eyes earnest and open. He even dares — risks it all, really — and lets his fingertips ghost the inside of her wrist where it hesitates just shy of holding him hostage.
The moment passes between them like a live wire. Not for the first time, and if the universe intends on royally screwing all of them over before this is done then Cadence is certain it won’t be the last. But her sympathy, like her sanity, isn’t Isseya’s to control. It’s not even at her whim.
Serafine’s cutlass flies through the air and clatters loudly to the pavement beside them.
Too late — the moment is shattered.
Isseya flinches back. Yanks her arm away from him like his touch is a burning brand. Before she can say anything else there’s a cry from above. Serafine’s body follows the path of her sword almost perfectly; a swan dive without the water to break her fall and when she collides with the earth it’s to the tune of her breaking bones.
Time’s up.
Cadence’s jeans scrape and wear at the knees as he skids to Serafine’s side and aid.
He gently turns her over, checking for anything worse than the odd angle of her shoulder socket and the deep cut struggling to stitch itself closed along the curve of her jaw. She groans softly in weak protest.
“Ever think about ditching the sword for something a little more permanent?” He mumbles, half to himself and half as a laugh. It’s something Kathy would do — he’s had that thought several times through their ordeal.
It’s actually a greater source of comfort than he can begin to describe.
Unlike Serafine, her opponent joins them from the rooftop with a stalwart kind of grace. His footfalls barely a tap-tap as he lands just shy of a crouch. Fluid movement in how he stands and makes his way to Isseya’s side. His blade — an old Roman gladius, because Cadence has learned from experience that the older they are the more they tend to lean into the cliche — catches a glinting silver on the distant street lamp. Bright all except where the metal is dotted dark red with blood.
“Good thing we aren’t keeping score, old friend.” Antony remarks. His face twitches in a sick kind of satisfaction as together their hunters watch Cadence help Serafine up, her arm slung over his shoulders to bear the burden of her while she forces her body to heal on her time, rather than its own.
“Unless you wish to count this as an extension of our Nassau campaign, of course.”
“How did the Romans ever get anything conquered if all you do is talk?” Cadence remarks; though his own injuries aren’t as severe in the moment it would be foolish of him not to acknowledge how the constant running and chasing and fighting and more running and the cycle unending has taken its toll.
Antony’s brow twitches; he’s barely given Cadence a second glance since the last time they were in this very city. Not that he’s complaining… seeing as his turn with the brutal General seems to be looming inevitably closer now.
There’s a sickening pop too close to his ears but Cadence resists the urge to flinch. Slowly Serafine steadies herself on her own two feet, grabbing her cutlass from the alley floor to grasp the handle tightly and with the same unwavering conviction.
“He’s right Antony,” and even weak as she is she manages a voice like velvet; crooning in her mockery, “you must be getting soft in your old age. I don’t remember this much chatting in Nassau.”
It would be infinitely more impressive if they seemed to have actually unnerved the man. Instead he’s somehow more impassive than ever.
Beside him, Isseya gives a short and exasperated huff of frustration. “You know you cannot keep this up for much longer, Dupont. Doubtful you’d even last the midnight flight to your next safe home.” She steps forward — tries and fails to mask the pain that comes over her as she watches Cadence throw his arm across the other woman’s front as a shield.
“Just tell us where they’ve taken the Bloodkeeper. One little location… we won’t even bring you back to Court. We will leave you to lick your wounds in the gutters as freemen.”
“Doubtful though, that it would last very long.” Muttered in muted amusement beside her; there’s a dangerous thing to be implied in Antony’s words and eyes.
All the more reason to keep this going for as long as possible.
Serafine snaps her fangs. “Why does Gaius even want her?” The same question she’s asked before; and will continue to ask until they manage to piece together an answer from the scraps they’re given.
“There are hundreds of psychics more skilled he could have.”
“You know the Bloodkeeper is no ordinary psychic.”
“Nor is she a formidable threat to someone of Gaius’ age and skill.” Serafine looks to Isseya imploringly. There’s a lot to be said for the fact that the less sane of the pair is the more reasonable one. “You’ve been in her mind, Isseya. And don’t think I didn’t see the damage your snake of a progeny did there, either. Whatever Gaius would want with her will no doubt go beyond what she’s capable of at her age!”
The Trinity vampire gives a callous shrug. “It’s no concern of mine.”
Beside her Antony’s shoulders shift slightly — it takes more than a fair moment for them to realize he’s laughing. Somehow he was less intimidating with the large broadsword raised and ready than… this.
“If you had any idea what she really was… who she could be…” Antony clicks his tongue, glancing off to the side as if to say ‘you are no threat, I don’t even have to keep you in my sights.’
“No doubt you and anyone else who stands against him would be singing a different tu—”
The dagger, slender as it is sharp and keenly disguised without flair in the darkness, barely so much whistles through the air before the blade strikes true. Embedding itself deep in the vampire’s back just to the side of his spine as if in warning. Light as a feather but enough to throw the ancient vampire slightly off-kilter.
He stumbles on his words — rare for a man like him — and staggers one, two steps forward from the shock of it.
“You were always better suited for the stage, domine. What with the way you’re always running your mouth.”
The flash in his eyes, red and bright and vicious is enough to make it clear that Antony recognizes that voice. In fact if he thinks about it Cadence recognizes it too. As Isseya does, as Serafine does. But it shouldn’t be possible — the look he and his injured companion exchange long and in silent awe is proof enough of that. It should not be possible.
And yet.
Despite the odd angle at which the dagger rests deep in his back Antony manages to pry it free with a strange sort of grace. The kind befitting a man of his age and his role in the history of the world… always on the battlefield in some form or another. It slips from his flesh and muscle with a wet noise; catches the light in a strange array of glinting silver and crimson where it catches the light when he looks it over with cool indifference.
Anyone so well-immersed in their kind would know these blades from sight alone; who they belong to and exactly what kind of darkness they’ve invited in alongside it. Antony, of course, is no different.
By all accounts it seems to do nothing more than bore him. “And here I was under the blissful impression I would never again have to hear your snide and unjust superiority, Sayeed.”
His words are punctuated with the hollow metallic clatter of the dagger dropped from his hand and left abandoned by his feet. As inconsequential as the rest of the rubbish strewn up and down the narrow alleyway.
But when Antony finally turns towards the shadows to face the emerging Kamilah, that boredom is all but a fleeting dream. The hardness in his eyes is unmistakable. Already the gears are turning in his mind — evaluating the terrain, the advantages he has and even more importantly the ones he does not. It’s what’s kept him alive this long, that much is obvious.
Though judging by the way the former Bloodqueen looks him up and down positively murderous that may not be enough to save him this time around.
Her eyes never leave Antony’s, but Kamilah raises her voice to speak over the stone wall of him.
“You look a little winded there, Serafine. I do hope you haven’t lost your touch with a blade.”
Serafine who offers a meager, wispy laughter in reply. “I should hope not, Kamilah darling, but here we are.”
There’s a tic in Antony’s jaw. His teeth grind together audibly.
“I see the rumors of your demise aren’t the certainty they were made out to be.” And none of the vampires gathered miss the look he flits to his companion in the dark — barely even a twitch of his head but oh so damning nonetheless.
After all, it had been Isseya who told them — told Adrian and Nadya and Cadence himself — that there had been no survivors of Gaius’ final assault on New York’s remaining vampires.
No survivors typically means, well, no survivors.
But Kamilah Sayeed would be the exception to the rule.
She isn’t foolish enough to avoid Antony any longer than she needs to. “If I didn’t know better I would swear you almost seem glad of it, domine.”
“Glad of the opportunity to pry you like a thorn from my side, perhaps.”
Are they seriously bantering right now? Cadence shifts and holds Serafine closer when he feels her weight sag against him just shy of fully collapsing.
They stalk one another in the narrow space. Apex predators in the shadows — neither of them yielding or backing down; that simply isn’t their way.
But in the steely determination of their eyes Cadence swears — and maybe he’s just imagining it here, but he’s seen a lot of crazy things these last few weeks and this seems by far the least insane of them all — that a silent conversation passes between them. Not in their minds but in their movements and expressions. In centuries, millennia of history between them both. From when they served the same king to now, here, on opposite sides of the fight.
“One might wonder why a reputation such as yours would be so willing to vanish into thin air.” Antony muses low, practically under his breath. Kamilah blows a single strand of hair out of her eyes — the only part of her out of place.
“Reputation means little with so much at stake.”
“Never thought I’d see the day when the Bloodqueen no longer cares what her subjects see when they come face to face with her.”
He’s goading Kamilah — that much is plain as day. But the part that stuns Cadence (and Serafine at his side, judging by the tension rippling tight through her shoulders and how she fights off the pain of her wounds and hunger like she’s preparing herself to jump back into the thick of it) the most… is how it’s working.
Whatever that silent not-conversation they’re having is about, it’s enough to rattle her. Well and truly.
Suddenly Antony stops. Kamilah’s hand tightens around the hilt of her dagger; poised and ready to strike. But the Roman doesn’t use his gladius. He doesn’t need to.
Not when he can cast just as deep a wound in the knowing way he smiles at her through the darkness.
“You know what he’s planning then.”
He’s not asking so much as stating a fact. One Kamilah doesn’t deny. A quick glance down to the woman hanging from his shoulder tells Cadence everything he needs to know… frankly he’s happy to not be as out of the loop as he feels.
Even Isseya, when she shifts on the balls of her feet and draws Cadence’s attention away from the old foes, seems to only have a piece of the proverbial puzzle.
He’s really starting to hate puzzles.
Victory drips like poison from Antony’s smirk. He eases up in gait; leaning back to give the vampire he once called Queen a look far too cynical to be admiration, but the hint of it is undoubtedly there.
“I can’t say I’m all too surprised. Gaius was convinced your fixation on the Bloodkeeper girl would be a blind spot for you. Despite a fair few of us in his Court insisting it would pan out quite the opposite.”
“Am I supposed to be flattered?”
“On the contrary,” his frown returns deeper than before, “because now he may think twice before assuming to know more than his advisors.”
Advisors, Court. So much going on right now.
Antony waits — they all do — for how Kamilah will respond. It’s not something done out of politeness so much as it is a petty nail in the coffin; not the final one but damn well close enough.
She takes them all by surprise. Again. “I’ve never pretended to enjoy your ridiculous Roman politics Antony, especially outdated as they are. But there is nothing to gain from entertaining the ideas Gaius has come to believe over his century of imprisonment.
“Surely you don’t actually believe his claims.”
“Whether I agree with his ideas or not is inconsequential. You know as well as I do there is very little to be done when he demands something of one of us. Gaius demands the girl brought to him alive, it’s as simple as that.”
Antony shrugs — like he hasn’t met Nadya, hasn’t seen her cry in fear and rage and desperation. Whereas Cadence can’t seem to get the shrill noises out of his head no matter how hard he tries.
If this is what it means to live as long as them, he thinks, maybe I’m better off choosing compassion over years.
But… no. That’s not who Kamilah Sayeed is. He’s seen it with his own eyes — Serafine has too. Even now the very mention of what Nadya is (and what she might be, something they seem to be skirting around awfully carefully with their verbal chess) makes the woman stand taller; lights a different kind of fire in her eyes.
Now if only she would take the pair of them out and be done with it. But Kathy’s always had a thing or two in critique about his damned wishful thinking.
“Never in all my years did I expect to see the Marc Antony so willing to roll over at his Maker’s whim.” Kamilah sighs in something like disappointment. It just gets her another one-shouldered shrug while the man tap-taps his gladius against the pavement.
“All power is earned one way or another. You earned yours your way Kamilah, and I continue to earn mine… and the freedom it grants me… by doing what I must.”
An almost serene smile eases the tension in the man’s own shoulders. “And now, faced with yet another large shift in the way of the world, all I have to do is bring a girl to a king. Though I’ll admit I had started out thinking this would be a relatively simple task…” glancing aside, he looks knowingly, accusingly at Isseya and her stony mask of neutrality, “but I suppose that’s what I get for rushing in without a plan of attack.
“But if the girl truly is who Gaius believes her to be, if she can truly give him what he’s promised any vampire willing to abandon your feeble rebellion and bend the knee, then what’s a prolonged chase in the wake of a new age… of an immortal age.”
Cadence spares a fleeting, desperate look to Isseya for answers. She doesn’t have any to give.
And this is Nadya they’re talking about, yes? Nadya with her headaches and hallucinations and less control over her visions as she would let them all believe.
That Nadya?
“What the hell are you talking about, Antony?” he barks in growing anger; catches himself by surprise at the protectiveness in his voice, too. And he’s not the only one who hears it — Sayeed does too. “She’s the Bloodkeeper, that’s all there is to it!” Right?
He set himself up for that one though, to be fair.
Antony chuckles. Eyes flashing red and the hint of a fang curling at the seam of his mouth. “And do you know what that even means? I wouldn’t be surprised if you did, but you’ve forsaken that part of yourself, haven’t you? And with it — answers.”
That’s getting them all nowhere. To Kamilah; “Please, Nadya’s desperate to see you again, Sayeed.”
Whose face falls before their eyes. The chill chased from her glare and her grip on her dagger wavering ever so slightly.
“I will not let him have her,” she says; and louder still, “I will not let Gaius take her away from me. He’s gone mad, well and truly, to believe in the myth of a myth. I would die before I let his obsession consume Nadya — before he would take her life on the chance that she…”
Chance that she what?
But Kamilah can’t bring herself to say it. There’s power in words; in speaking them aloud and giving life to them. Cadence knows that better than anyone.
But before he can even think of how to reassure her there’s a soft moan of pain near his ear that takes priority. Serafine sags heavier against his side; Cadence side-steps and balances them both to compensate for the added weight.
She won’t stay conscious for much longer (if she could be considered conscious now…) and this time is already far more different than their other encounters. Not just with Kamilah firmly between them and Antony’s game of cat and mouse either, but because the game seems to have finally played out longer than necessary.
They need to go. Now.
“I can’t recall ever seeing you rendered speechless, Kamilah.” Cadence isn’t the only one who knows they’re running on borrowed time. That’s why Antony goads her back his way — closer and closer still.
He thumbs a smear of Serafine’s blood from his gladius.
“Don’t tell me the renowned and vicious Bloodqueen is scared of — what did you call it — a myth of a myth? Or perhaps it’s the prophecy itself that disturbs you. I believe I recall your struggle for his affections so many years ago.”
Fuck. It works too well.
Kamilah rounds on him with renewed fury. “You have no idea what you speak of. And if you wish to live to see the dawn you’ll know never to speak of it again!”
“Ah, yes, well… I can understand the pain of an old flame extinguished; a love lost. I think all of us can,” but when he gestures with a sweeping arm no one dares, “or at the very least we might imagine what it must feel like to have your very being compared with a memory; a ghost.
“Everyone at Court knew, of course. How the Bloodqueen never quite measured up to the Goddess Herself.”
Kamilah Sayeed isn’t a woman to issue hollow threats but that’s not what this is. This is fear freezing her in her tracks, anger shaking her body to its core; an unfortunate truth — not all of it, but enough — being forced on her against her will.
“She cannot be brought back from the dead.”
Antony cocks his head to the side. “Are you quite certain? At any rate there seems to be little harm in trying.”
“If you dare…”
“What, Kamilah? If I dare what? What will you do — better yet what will you have the power to do when he gets his chance? Because it looks to me as though you would not be able to lift a finger, or a dagger at that.
“You would stand there as you stand before me now, held captive by your own weakness. Forcing yourself to watch Gaius Turn her, the Bloodkeeper fed the Blood of the First from his veins. And all would gather to see and bear witness as that blood would bring Her back in new form and face.”
Kamilah takes half a step back — a reflex she can’t control. Much like Cadence can’t control the feeling of his stomach dropping out from underneath him.
No one can truly rise above their own fear.
“He will never lay a finger on her.”
“Denial doesn’t become you.”
Out of the corner of his eye Cadence sees a flicker in the dark — Kamilah’s grip on her dagger renewed; made stronger by her own words. And oh how she practically shouts them into the night sky.
“Nadya is not the First Vampire!”
But the Roman remains unfazed. “Perhaps not yet…” he muses, and always with the same damned smirk.
“But she could be. And the King is quite determined to find out.”
