What do you think will happen/what are your expectations for book 8?

I really wish that besides Grim, somehow Yuu also had an overblot, even without magic, maybe somehow when he is defeated Grim's blot passes to Yuu? It is said that Blot is only created by magic users, but if the blot comes from someone else, maybe it is possible for a non-magician to have an overblot, even because overblots are rare events, it makes sense that something like this would never happen before. I think it's very difficult to happen, since Yuu doesn't have a defined appearance, so they couldn't make an overblot Yuu sprite (unless it was some monstrous being without a human appearance), but it doesn't hurt to dream, right?

I don't have any specific predictions, but I expect book 8 to at the very least cover the following topics:

NRC vs RSA magift/spelldrive tournament (NRC wins?)

solving the mystery of Mickey Mouse in the mirror

Grim OB

Diasomnia returns to help us out with whatever

follow-up on Malleus's horn injury and/or character growth from book 7 (like what is he doing to repent for his actions)

Yuu has to make the choice to go home or to stay and/or something super convenient happens to keep them in Twisted Wonderland (like the reveal that they're dead or something)

reveal of Crowley's true motives

I've already spoken about my thoughts on Yuu ad nauseum but 💦 to make it clear where I stand on the question of "should Yuu have a bigger role in the main story?":

Yuu is the main character, but not the protagonist. MC =/= protagonist

Yuu is SUPPOSED to be ordinary, to show the arrogant and powerful NRC students that there is an alternative to their current methods

Yuu should be more involved, but in a way that doesn't impede the self-insert aspect of Twst + doesn't shift focus to make them the Most Important/Central Figure of Twst

I think the idea of Yuu OBing has been done quite often in fan content, but I don't think it will happen in canon. Firstly, it just cannot happen naturally since Yuu is incapable of magic (and blot is a magic byproduct). I don't think it's possible for someone to "catch" OB like it's a contagious disease either. The manga adaptation of Twst indicates that blot is caustic and literally eats away at whatever it touches, organic (grass) or inorganic (fabric, soil, etc.). It'd kill you, not corrupt you like it does with the mage from which the blot originates. Another issue is that the Phantom that arises with the blot leeches off a mage's magical energy to get by, and Yuu has none to offer. Maybe the one exception to this rule is Idia, due to the unique Shroud bloodline curse which easily munches away at the blot he accumulates and/or blot in the immediate area.

Secondly, I don't see a narrative purpose for this occurring in the script other than "it would be cool" or "it would make Yuu's presence seem ultra important". It'd also be pretty difficult to show in the narrative since each player has their own interpretation of Yuu. The OB form wouldn't fit everyone, and the post-OB flashback (assuming there is one) wouldn't be "true" of everyone either. We've never had an extended monologue of Yuu, we've never had Yuu talk at length about how they feel about being in Twst versus going home. In fact, they're given clashing dialogue options sometimes so you can pick whether your Yuu wants to stay or wants to leave.

I just think it doesn't make sense to throw in a Yuu OB. It's something that's best to stay in the realm of fan art and fanfiction, in my opinion. If it were to be canonized, surely there would be fans unhappy with the execution or the representation on their own Yuusona. Like you said, doesn't hurt to dream but it's unlikely to happen, so it's probably best not to get your hopes up.

I know you have a lot of stuff to work on, so don't feel pressured to-- but would it be too greedy to ask for a similar post detailing how Raven and Jade's relationship evolves? Only if you want/have time, that is

Also, minor question regarding the general Raven-universe timeline: when do the events of the main saga you wrote about her go? (I. Really love what you did there but I forgot the title I'm so sorry)

Oh, you must be talking about the Tale of the Cursed Raven. The first 5 parts span late August/early September to about mid-February. The remaining 15 or so parts largely take place in spring, the season of rebirth (which is meant to indicate how Miss Raven herself has changed too). Coincidentally, that also happens to line up with the events of book 7--so I like to tease and joke about how maybe her "happy ending" is just a false one whipped up in her head while asleep.

asduivvdoq8vasdpmad Anyway, here's the relationship progression you asked for ^^ Below the cut due to length, though this one’s shorter and more linear than the precious relationship progression post.

Prologue (late Aug - early Sept)

Waaaay before NRC and back when Raven was just a bird, she became curious about the ocean and got too close to it. The waves crashed into her and she almost drowned, but was saved by Jade, who was visiting the surface world at the time with his twin. (Neither Raven or Jade remember this encounter clearly though; she has a vague memory of it but doesn’t recall his face and he doesn’t realize that bird he saved back then was her.)

Raven and Jade first formally meet on their way to the entrance ceremony. Up to this point, she’s been cooped up in Crowley’s attic and afraid to go out and interact with the other students. She’s only heading out now because Crowley essentially “pushed her out of the next” (ie shoves her out the door and tells her he’ll be seeing her at the ceremony so good luck finding her way there).

Since she’s lost, Jade offers his help—though not without ulterior motives. He figures that if he gets in this stranger’s good graces now, they may become useful down the road. Since Raven seems to be shy and uncertain, it’s very easy for him to approach and ingrain himself in her head.

Raven thinks Jade looks unusual, but pretty. She’s very impressed by his manners, which are impeccable and almost read like something out of a fairy tale.

Crowley makes Raven introduce herself to the whole school since she’s enrolled under “special circumstances”. Here it is revealed to everyone that Raven is Crowley’s “niece”, so he expects them all to treat her well (knowing that the average NRC student is sort of a prideful bully).

Azul sees a timid and emotionally vulnerable girliepop who barely knows anything about the human world and gets THAUMARK SIGNS in his eyes. He quickly determines that if they can get into Raven’s good graces, Octavinelle has an easy way to manipulate the headmaster and get whatever they want.

Jade recognizes Raven from before the ceremony; Azul thinks this must be fate! He assigns Jade the task of “befriending” her, to which Jade agrees, thinking that it sounds “amusing”.

Book 1 (Sept)

Jade arranges an “accidental” reunion in the hallway or something. Raven meets Floyd too; she’s baffled by the concept of twins and how similar they are.

He and Floyd invite her to the Mostro Lounge (which Raven is fascinated by). When Raven tries the food there, she realizes her human vocabulary is limited and she can’t properly convey how the food tastes. Jade volunteers to be her “tutor” for new words + human culture, claiming that he feels bad + wants to help out as someone who was once also a fish out of water. Floyd, who is in on Azul’s plan, supports the suggestion.

Raven’s so happy to have made a new friend :DD and to receive all this help! Of course she accepts.

Book 2 (Oct)

Not much to note here; this is primarily the “getting to know each other” phase. Jade’s tutoring, Raven’s absorbing it all like a sponge. Very wholesome stuff.

She’s becoming increasingly fond of Jade! Basically considers him a reliable senpai and a friend.

Jade has no particular attachment to her, he’s just putting up a front to get the job done. (Picture Azul here drumming his fingers together and looking really sinister. Bro’s an anime supervillain waiting to pounce on his next sucker.)

Book 3 (Nov)

Friendship era continues. Jade even takes her out camping with him + Raven gets to see his true form.

Jade sort of develops a bit of a soft spot for her here? Part of it is shared interests + appreciation for nature, the other part of it is her genuinely enjoys how she looks at everything with wide-eyed wonder and curiosity. Her reactions are so entertaining. Not really a crush, more like a burgeoning interest.

It’s fiiine, he tells himself. So what if he likes her a little? It’s probably nothing. As if a pathetic little thing like Raven could ever bring him down. (LOL he’s overconfident…)

Raven’s friendship with Jade is still very strong, but at this point in the school year she starts to hear very unflattering things about Octavinelle. Other students talk about how they’ve been ripped off by them, Crowley warns her about falling in with the “wrong crowd”, etc.

She starts to become a little doubtful, but ultimately convinces herself there’s not way the kind-hearted Jade would be involved with this kind of shady stuff. Raven (oh, you sweet summer child) decides she’ll put all her faith in him!! Always finds or makes up a convenient excuse for whatever terrible rumor she hears about Octavinelle.

Book 4 (Dec)

Jade stays on campus while Raven goes with Crowley to tour the tropical islands in the South.

During this time, Raven keeps writing in her diary and realizes she’s thinking about Jade a lot. She wonders if it is absence that makes the heart grow fonder or if it is something else.

Similarly, Jade is thinking about her—all the little things she does that are so… interesting. This is also post Azul-OB, so Raven has helped Azul through that period (for which Jade is thankful for). First tinges of guilt form.

They do have each other’s numbers at this point, but Raven’s still sort of shy and unable to initiate a conversation. And, uh… Jade’s got his hands full with Scarabia stuff, so he doesn’t have the time to message super often.

Book 5 (Jan - Feb)

Return to school. Raven starts to hear buzz about “Valentine’s Day”. Becomes curious and learns about it being a celebration of love.

Raven determines that what she’s feeling must be a crush. Makes chocolates and prepares to confess, even at the risk of her own life (due to her curse preventing her from making these kinds of declarations.) Goes to deliver it and overhears a conversation that breaks her heart 💔 She runs away and cries a little, yay ✨

Remorse has caught up with Jade, leaving him conflicted about how to proceed from hereon out. He tries to convince Azul to spare her/for them to use some other method to get to Crowley, but this is overheard and turns Raven against him.

He attempts to make amends, but the trust is broken 💀 and Raven swears to herself she’ll become stronger so she’ll never be deceived again. (This contributes to her haughty facade + being a tsundere; it’s mainly a “tough” act she puts on as a self-defense mechanism.)

She proceeds to give the cold shoulder to him and/or avoid him as much as she can. Focuses on her work instead. Jade sort of does the same, giving her distance.

Book 6 (Feb)

Raven ventures to S.T.Y.X. HQ; not really thinking much about Jade when there are other students she’s worried about. If anything, this is a welcome distraction from her heartbreak.

They awkwardly make eye contact when everyone reunites on the sports field. Not really sure what to say or do, but Jade finally manages to thank her for helping Azul (post-OB and rescuing from S.T.Y.X.). Makes a comment about how the common raven is capable of great acts of bravery. She politely nods and leaves it at that.

Jade attempts to wiggle his way back into her heart. Really plays up the demure/“I’m just trying to be helpful” act. Sometimes teases.

Usually met with very prickly or suspicious responses, since Raven is never entirely sure about his authenticity.

Honestly, she probably undergoes her biggest growth after having hurt feelings hurt 💀 Raven sort of realizes she was overly reliant on others and it’s time for her to be a “big girl” and to be confident in her own identity and skills, separate from that of Jade. Mastery of her UM occurs.

Raven is able to break her curse; she is forced to tell Jade how she truly feels about him (as he uses his UM on her). This is considered a sign of “trust” between them, as he can no longer use his UM on her after that one try.

Floyd makes fun of them— Azul has come around on his own plans for Raven. He used to care a lot about how to get a leg up, but now he realizes that he values Jade as a friend and cares about his happiness. (Besides, there are plenty of other opportunities to get ahead!!)

Raven and Jade mutually decide to not start a relationship, as Raven doesn’t think she’s ready for it. She wants to explore more on her own, and on her own terms. Jade says he understands and will wait for her answer.

Book 7 (March, but ends May 15)

Jade and Raven are on more amicable terms now, though they still bicker a lot (especially given Raven’s more headstrong personality now).

Helps with catering at Lilia’s farewell party. He and Raven meet and catch up, discussing possibilities for the future. Jade brings up that he wonders how long it will take before she “answers” him—will it be while he’s on his internship? After graduation? After hers? But Raven is feeling a lot of conflicted things right now, so she tells him off for being cheeky.

She enters Jade’s dream with the others and basically watches in horror as the twins violently beat each other up. Once Jade is woken up, Raven rushes over and examines him to see if he’s really okay. Jade teases her about it. “… Well, clearly you’re well if you can muster the strength to make fun of me!” Raven huffs.

Lets him lead the way in Azul’s dream. Comments that he and Floyd are close with Azul and must care for him a lot. He’s a little surprised that she would say this but avoids confirming or denying it. Raven thinks it’s cute—

Jade and Raven say their good-byes, and Jade is able to see her off with a genuine smile for once. Asks her and Azul to take care; he looks forward to seeing her again in the waking world. Azul asks Raven if something happened between them, and she says she’s not so sure anymore.

She returns the favor by wishing Jade luck when he's evacuating the Octavinelle students to safety.

They catch up at the party~

At the end of the book, I'd say they're still mid-repairing the trust in their relationship?? I think going through trials and tribulations together in book 7 reminds Raven that, when it comes down to it, Jade can still be reliable. As for Jade, he's impressed at how much she has grown independent of him and decides that he'd like to continue watching over her for his amusement.
