This is why detective Pico ends up with an incubus as emotional support demon instead of something like a mini Cerberus.

Due to the nature of the detective’s work, a hellhound would be a good match for him. There’s canines on the force already after all. A dog couldn’t make sure he took his meds properly though, or tell him to eat before he collapses. There wasn't a guarantee that the ginger could take care of one either with how poor is mental health was. He needed someone who could deal with sudden changes in mood. A person with the ability to tell if he's hearing things, and know what he's saying isn't directed at them when he does. This demon must also able to deal with any threats an officer could face.

With how new the emotional support demon program was, there was only one option. An incubus that could sense the shifting mood of others like it was instinct. Boyfriend's only experience as an emotional support was for patients in the hospital, but this ability of his allowed him to pre-emptively deal with any problems before they got worse. Already well acquainted with Pico, the incubus knew what would work best. If the ginger was in the middle of an investigation, he would find a way to get him alone in a quieter place to give him a chance to recollect himself. If that wasn't possible, he would play his saxophone to help him ignore the negative thoughts while he worked. Sometimes he would flirt/tease with him as a distraction, but the moment he sensed Pico was getting uncomfortable, he would back off. When Pico's lighter doesn't work, Boyfriend snaps his fingers to produce a small flame for him to use. When the detective doesn't have much of an appetite, he would make something that can be easily consumed like soup. Sometimes he would just sit together with him in silence while watching the sunset. He knew that sometimes it's best to say nothing, and simply being there is enough.

Relief hits him hard when Marks confirms Ronon and John’s signal, but he can’t do anything about it. Teyla’s still out there, the Wraith ship is still firing on them—there’s still too much to do. He can’t even justify slipping off to the infirmary, not before he’s got Teyla back.
