From learning a Con-Lang to discovering ancient Star Wars Lore (or, a Star Wars Rant Part 2: Eclectic Boogaloo)

Update for the month I was gone (or, the part you can skip if you just want the rant):

I am no longer almost 40 now, I am 40. So, please be patient with this little old lady. I fell a LOT deeper into the rabbit hole in the past month, so this is not only about the Mando'a language any more.

Also, sadly, my Star Wars TTRPG group is on hiatus cause scheduling conflicts and everyone else wanting to go back to D&D.

I'm still fangirling, and still feeling awkward and too old about it. I also got given a bunch of helpful links last time, which I am grateful for. I checked them out, but I do not feel up to joining any Discords at this point. I barely use the app, and I would still feel like an intruder.

I am, however, getting an AO3 account to bookmark a few fics I found and am waiting on updates for. The open tabs are getting ridiculous at that point. Also, I actually want to be able to comment. Special mention to "A varianble star", which had a great depiction of a very traumatized and messed-up character.

The Mando'a confusion (or, why are so few sillables doing so much heavy lifting?)

Really, sometimes it seems like someone made up like ten words from scratch, then tried to get the rest by combining parts of these words. You want examples? Too bad, you get them anyway.

kar'taylir - To know. This one is cheating, since the literal meaning "to hold in the heart" is pointed out in the dictionary. It is, however, the word that made me look for this pattern.

karyai - I cottoned on to this one since my spouse constantly mispronounced it as "karyaim". Kar again for heart, yai(m) for home, so heart of the home. It is the main room of the house. With me so far? Too bad, on we go.

ik'aad (baby) and adiik (child 3 to 13) are literally the inverse of each other. Were they even trying?

Bes'briik. Rail. Bes for Beskar or iron, and briik means line. Iron line.

Last point: What is up with the city of Sundari and how is it pronounced? When I first watched Clone Wars, I had subtitles off since I wanted to practice my English, and I could swear it was "Sindabe" or even "Cindabe" from what I heard. Which would make sense, analogue to Keldabe, and the "Cin" spelling would translate to "White settlement" or "white stronghold" in my mind. I tried to research this, and all I found was a mining planet called Sundari, in addition to the city. Can anyone help me out here?

Mandalorian names (or, can you really go wrong with your fan names if these are official?)

Not wanting to dunk on anyone, but some of the Legend and even canon character names get funny/ edgy/ ridiculous if you translate them. But then again, Darth Caedus was a thing, and that name is latin for "slaughter".

My first victim here is Kal Skirata. Kal meaning blade or knife is pointed out in the book itself, if I remember correctly. Skirata is, as far as I know, left untranslated, so allow my amateurish self to try. Skira means revenge, but in a personal way. Ta could either just be there for the looks or short for tal, blood. So, in the best case, he is "Knife Revenge", in the worst, he is "Knife Blood Vengeance". However edgy that is, he has nothing on the next guy, and his might be a perfectly normal Mandalorian name.

Second one: Gar Saxon. I got nothing for "Saxon", but "gar" literally means "you". This poor guy's parents took a look at his tiny baby face way back when and named him "you". And this is the one I can't get over. For the life of me, I do not understand how this happened or how this got past whatever internal consistency or quality control Legends had. As far as I know, that guy is stil canon. He was in Rebels. Sabine ends him iirc.

Honorabloe mention: Jaro Tapal. Jaro meaning "death wish". Since he's a Lasaati Jedi, I think this one is just an unfortunate coincidence, like someone's name sounding like a cuss word in another language.

Beyond the language: Canon, Legends and Fanon confusion (or, what the hell is going on?)

So, as I mentioned, I read Fan Fiction as a guilty pleasure thing. Preferably fanfiction that has Mandalorians in it. I stumbled over a few things I'm curious about.

Beskar as a force-blocker: This is in almost every fic I read, and I cannot, for the life of me, find where it originated. There's no EU/ Legends/ Canon source I could find for Beskar blocking the Force in a similar way to lead blocking radiation. If you know where this came from, please tell me.

Does Keldabe still exist? I pictured and still picture Mandalore as basically divided in two, with the desert and Sundari in the south, while the north is more forest-y and houses Keldabe, the Mandal Motors company, and Kyrimorut, amongst other things. I believe, though, that is neither accurate to Legends or Canon, and I just combined both versions of Mandalore in my mind. Even though we see ships Mandal Motors produced as recent as the Mandalorian TV show, so they must be around somewhere.

Why is there no Mando'a word for the New Mandalorians? The other two factions got them. I found some fan-made ones that do work, though.

Wild card: What happened to Jabba the Hutt's son?

Lightsabers, and the Darksaber, being sentient: It's a fun idea to play with, so I see why some authors do. It goes a lot into the magic direction for something that sells itself as Sci-Fi, though. Adding to this, is the Force sentient?

Was there really only one force-sensitive person born to Mandalorian parents?If no, what happened to the others? Is there a secret order of Mandalorian force users? Are they sent away to other force-traditions than the Jedi? Also, the term "stars-touched". I love it, but I think that one's fanon.

I wanted to participate in Mermay. It’s now October. Alas. Codywan makeout session forever 🙏

My process is under the cut if you would like to see how I made this :3

I'd been feeling a little dried out and beaten artistically in May so I didn't do much art. However, I really wanted to do something for Mermay so one night before bed I quickly scribbled some quick concepts in the notes app of my phone with my finger.

On the 28th I realized the month ran away from me and was quickly escaping so I knew I had to get started on drawing something for Mermay. My bathroom concepts, as cool as they are and despite how much I like them, had to be discarded because drawing a bathroom and rendering everything to the degree I envisioned wasn't feasible. Unless some miracle happened, it's the kind of artwork that, at the absolute minimum, would take 15 hours. More realistically we'd be looking at 25-30 hours. Really not doable on a time crunch. That's not to say I won't ever return to it!!

So to start off on the other idea I had, I looked through Pinterest for around ten minutes for some inspiration (mainly at photos of pretty underwater shots and also some photos of people swimming underwater) and then sketched for maybe 20-30 minutes.

A while ago, while I was mulling over what fish I would base mercodywan off of in a potential au, @happybean17 recommended the epaulette soldierfish for Cody and once I googled it and discovered it is also called the kuntee soldierfish... well, quite honestly, how could I resist? It's the perfect colors and Cody, my beloved, is soooo cunty.

I initially wanted Obi-Wan to be based off a shark of some sort but when I started drawing it just felt right to make him frilly like a betta which I rationalize is because he wears robes with some swoosh. I then googled and quickly found a betta that's very Obi-Wan colored.

Soooo after looking at the photos I put my sketch in my tablet and started doing lineart.

I drew a big fanned out tail for Obi-Wan but after I had spent all that time on it I decided it was far too static and flat. It didn't feel like it was swishing in water.

I made a copy of the tail and minorly edited that to be Obi-Wan's swooshy butt fin. And to make his tail swooshy I used liquify and also redrew a bunch of it.

And then I began the loooong process of painting.

I've hit the image limit so pretend I've added the finished product here.

All in all, this took me over 14 hours and--due to some hiccups in my life--many more months than planned. Going so long without finishing a single artwork was incredibly demoralizing so I'm relieved to finally finish this and have an actual artwork to show for my hard work. Oh, and thank you for reading my rambles and I hope seeing the process was interesting!

Story time!

Fox was having a shity day, and then he was having a great day.

The usual bullshit, politicians, riots, criminal activity, syndicates after his head. He hadn’t slept in 30 hours. He was out of fucks to give.

Palpatine knocked a pen off his desk and asked Fox to pick it up. Fox went blind with rage and shot him on the spot.

Corrie guards standing outside the room poke their heads in, and see what happened. They congratulate Fox and gently chide him for not giving them more advanced notice as they respectfully arrest him.

Fox is in prison for about 27 minutes while they fake his death via stabbing by inmates he had arrested previously. He gets the CT number and armor of an ARC captain and is sent back to work, as per protocol.

Fox decides that this is an excellent time to take a team and go take out the leader of the Black Sun syndicate because they’ve been a pain in the ass for a while now. So he loads up a slug thrower and goes to kill Maul.

Somehow, news of what happened got around rather quickly and many people came to the marshal commanders office demanding an explanation.

Thorn, newly promoted, was not having a good time.

“Fox has been arrested” he explained patiently “he’s dead now tho so don’t worry about it”

“What does our decommissioned batchmate have to do with this?” Cody and Wolffe demand “we’re here about Fletcher”

Thorn forgot about Fletcher.

Well, he didn’t forget. How could anyone forget Marshal Commander CC-1010 Fletcher- oh wait.

Thorn realizes he has Fucked Up. He does not offer further explanation. He just sits down in the shitty little chair behind the shitty little desk in the shitty little office full of generals and commanders staring at him suspiciously and Thorn banged his head on the desk. Maybe if he knocked himself out he wouldn’t have to deal with this.

The universe decides to mock him further. Fives and Dogma, who are supposed to be dead, stick their heads through the door and somehow miss the huge crowd of people.

“Fox just got back and he gave us Maul’s head before heading up to blackmail a senator after dealing with that riot, what do you want us to do with it?”

oc time again! + her town & culture (heavily inspired by pre-roman italic populations)

she is suri sauthon. her story is linked to my swtor imperial agent, tar'x, but most of her life except for the one year away where she meets him, is spent in a town in the mountains of mirial.

despite mirial being cold and desert, and many cities developing underground, her town flourishes thanks to a force nexus, venerated in the form of an ancient, sacred, alive crystal. the ecosystem of that mountain depended on what "the horned crystal" was capable of giving them, but mirialans couldn't live off of that alone, so they developed trade and some rudimental technology, even if oftentimes it was bought thanks to the highly profitable trade of a plant used to make medicines that slowed down aging and had overall healing properties.

note: everything that's generated by this nexus has these healing properties BUT they have to be processed, except for those who bathed in the waters of the cavity under the crystal - the "real" nexus, but not the worshipped one. the waters were sacred but they were not thought to be miraculous, unlike the crystal, who instead was thought of as the keystone of the ecosystem: without it, everything would fall apart (and that is partially true: the cavity was the "real" nexus but thanks to the crystal, also strong in the force, the properties were spread all over the mountains). those who bathed in the cavity's waters - so, all of the town, who had a sort of baptism there - could eat the plant, make whatever food with it, and not only that plant, but everything generated by the nexus, that, again, had similar properties. this allowed people to live up to normal life-spans without advanced medicines or, much, really. to those who didn't live there, though, after the processing, had incredible effects, slowing down aging - for those who took it regularly - and making people able to live up to half a century more than the average]

originally, there were four tribes of nomads that lived thanks to horned farm animals that decided to settle down into one bigger town and other smaller settlements, to live off of transhumance. this division of the tribes stayed into the political and social organization: every person belonged to one tribe specifically, and had slightly different rituals and culture. for examples, each tribe had their own priests and healers, with different techniques and traditions. the town, tho, was guided by a group of people in the high priesthood, a position you could reach only by having earned the trust of all tribes. those high priests had many roles: they guided the people into sacred processions common to all the tribes, they managed the trading with outsiders, they did the maintenance of the temple of the summit (the one that functioned as casket to the crystal) and created a special liquid to offer the crystal that helps it grow.

this particular temple was important because 1. it was very visible, from every angle of the town, and it became an important identity symbol; 2. it stored the venerated horned crystal; 3. it had the altar where sacrifices were made for the crystals. that altar had a hole connected to the cavity, that allowed the liquids to reach the underground; 4. it had various symbols: statues representing each tribe + the high priesthood, and typical mirialan tattoos carved into the wood of the trees that served as columns for the temple, symbolizing 8 values that who dared to enter HAD to have; 5. it was on the way to an important lake (called "mother lake" because the lake the town was built around to depended on the waters of that other lake) where they traveled to in important processions; 6. it was said that a the wizard who unified the tribes made it with its magic, making the plant grow to hold the temple's roof. this wizard was, actually, a force user, obv.

BACK TO HER THOUGH: she's daughter of one of the high priests, who was in charge of managing the trades with outsiders, and lives in a house on the mountains with her mother and him. her parents are from different tribes (that's one of the things that earned him trust from the 4 tribes): when a child is born from two different tribes, they don't pick one to allign to, but they're usually linked automatically to the one with more relatives in it (in her case, the father's tribe: she had many uncles and aunts on his side while her mom only had one sister).

later, though, she got quite tied to her mother's tribe due to a mysterious illness that only her mother's tribe healer was able to cure. she spent 4 years (from 10 to 14 years old) living with the healer and learned her secrets. to better study, she wrote them down. when she returned home, she studied to become a priestess with her father. at 22 (the average age: you can't become priest before your 20s), she was supposed to take a test and become a priestess, but the healer of her mother's tribe died and the tribe asked her to take her place. she couldn't technically do that, but both tribes estimated both her and her parents and she was allowed to become both. she then decided to try to become a high priestess, and became one at 25 (a quite young age). being part of the council, she tried to convince the various tribe healers to unite their knowledges and write them down, and eventually made it. healers still remained tribe based but they now had an "upper, inter-tribe level" similar to high priesthood.

years later, the sacred horned crystal is stolen from the temple by some Hutt mercenaries looking for a profit. given the trust she has earned from all the tribes and the fact that her father is the high priest that deals with outsiders (and she's been hearing stories and advice about it since she was little), she is the one tasked with getting it back. without the growing crystal, the keystone to their ecosystem, the village would have lasted only a few years. in hrr quest, she meets imperial intelligence agent tar'x laran and, as they "solve the mystery" and fight to have it back, they get closer. they'll get married and have a daughter, Vegoia (who's the only one who actually will get to the plot of my story. this was all background)
