The day of Otoya's 18th birthday. Today he would be crowned king and take over the kingdom. You woke up early and rode all morning from your country to see him. A few hours later you woke to the sun shining in your eyes, seeing how you slept most of the way.
It was crowded when you got there. Guards lined up at every corner. People came far and wide to witness the crowning of a new king. You had to push through the crowd to even get close to the main balcony when a hand touched your shoulder.
“There you are! I finally found you!” You feel someone's arms wrap around your waist. It was him. “Otoya!” You turn and give him a hug, he squeezes you back. “Thanks for coming.”
“How could I miss my best friend's 18th birthday/coronation??” “Haha, this place is totally packed, huh? Just getting over here to you was crazy.” “They're all here for you.” You give a warm smile.
“Congratulations, King Otoya Ittoki.” You curtsy. “Gosh... Hearing you say it all formal like is kinda embarrassing.” He scratches his head. “Well, I'll answer as the birthday king should.” Otoya puts his hands on his hips puffing out his chest. “You have my thanks, dear Y/N.” Then bows. “Maybe that wasn't so regal...” you both laugh.
“Well, today is about to kick into high gear so stick close to me, ok?” “I promise I won't leave your side.”
“Still, I'd find you even if you vanished into thin air. We'll have lots more time to talk if we stick together, plus everyone can know about us right?”
“Know about us?”
“Let's go!” You follow close behind him but find it challenging with all of the people. You hesitate to grab his hand but he takes yours first. You look up and see his bright smile and wink as he guides you through the crowds of people till he sneaks you inside.
“Hey, there's something I'd like to show you.” “Oh?” “Close your eyes.” “Otoya...” You whine. “Come on it's a surprise!”
“Fine.” You close your eyes and he takes your hand guiding you slowly down the hall.
“Don't peek, ok?” “I wouldn't dream of it.” You go down a few halls then Otoya puts his hands over your eyes. “It's just up ahead, so put your trust in me. Keep walking straight.”
Continuing down the corridor you approach some steps and a large door. “There's a small staircase so watch your step.”
“Shouldn't I be the one surprising you?” “Maybe. But it's not often we see each other. Just a few more steps and we're here!” He takes his hands away from your face. “Open your eyes!” Revealed to you is a grand balcony with a gorgeous view of the land. “Ta da!”
“Wow, Otoya!” “Are you surprised?” “This is amazing! I've never been here before.” “This is the prettiest spot in the whole castle, so I had to show you! There's even an awesome view of the ocean!”
You can see every corner of the courtyard. You walk up to the railing and lean forward taking in the sights, Otoya joins you from behind.
“Beautiful isn't it? Wonderful weather, and a beautiful princess.” You giggle. “And a charming prince, soon to be king.”
You both heard a commotion from below. “Uhh, it looks like everyone is looking for me. They won't check here right?” He scratches the back of his head. “Maybe we should go back.” “Nah, it'll only be a few minutes, no harm done. Besides look!” Otoya shuffles in a bag behind his back.
“I brought us some cake for us to eat together!” You cross your arms. “Otoya isn't that for the reception?” “Well yeah but I want to eat it with you now... And it's my birthday so anything goes!” You shake your head and laugh. “Alright then, let's dig in.” “Yay!”
He places the plate on the table to the left of the balcony. “After you, princess.” He pulls out a chair. “How kind of you your majesty.” Grabbing two forks from his bag he sits across from you unwrapping the cake. “Waah, this looks sooo good. Itadakimasu!” You both took a bite savouring the vanilla cake and fluffy buttercream frosting.
“Mmm, I knew it.” “Knew what?” “That this cake is way tastier being here with you than at the party.” “Uh-huh.” “What? You don't feel the same way?” He pouts. “Everything's better with you, Otoya.” “Really? I think so too... With you I mean!” You both gobble down the rest of your cake not saying a word but simply enjoying each other's company.
“Ahh, that hit the spot. Shall we go?” “You have cake on your face silly. You'll look like a fool if you go out like that.” “Hmm? Where is it?” He licks around his lips. “No on your cheek, here.” You laugh stepping closer to wipe the icing with your thumb from his cheek. Sticking it in your mouth you then clapping your hands together.
“That's better.” “T-thanks...” He blushes but quickly recovers. “Well, the party's just getting started.” You place your hands on his shoulders. “Let's make this the best day ever!”
You and Otoya go back down to greet the people outside in the crowd. Staying closely by his side he never let you out of his sight. “Otoya there you are! I swear you have no sense of time. The ceremony is about to begin!” The queen crosses her arms. “Already?” “Yes, now let's go.” “But Y/N...” “I'll be fine.” You smile. He takes both of your hands in his. “I'll come to find you after, ok?” “Alright, now go get your crown.” You wink.
The crowning ceremony was lovely. Otoya took the coronation oath and made a speech. Afterwards, everyone gathered in the main ballroom then the celebration really began. You were wandering around near the edge of the ballroom when you felt a hand pull you around the corner.
“Hey.” “Oh hi.” You smile and fix your eyes on his crown. “So what's next, king?” “Hehe, come with me.” You spend the rest of the day greeting more people, enjoying the food at the banquet and listening to the royal orchestra. When nightfall came Otoya leads you away from the dwindling crowds to his bedroom to retire for the night.
“Wow, that was a blast.” You jump on his bed and sink into the duvet. “We hung out all day huh?” “Yup seems like it.” “Time flies when I'm with you. Oh! And did you hear the band? They were all like bweeh daa daa doooo.” Otoya mimics a violin shaking his head around.
“Ah! My crown is gonna fall!” He juggles it between his hands leaning over and catching it before it hits you. “Gotcha. Whoa!” The carpet slipping from under him he fell on top of you anyway. “S-sorry y/n!” There was a moment you stared into each other's eyes. You blushed a bright red then laughed.
“Cmon... no laughing. I just let my guard down a bit...” he pouts. “You're just a clutz, Otoya.” You scoot off to the other side of the bed. “Am not! I always act like a king should...” “Uh huh. So what does it feel like to be a king anyway?” He places his hand on his chin and ponders.
“It's not much different than being a prince yet I don't think. Though I guess a big responsibility falls on my shoulders now that I am a king. I have a whole kingdom to look out for after all. And you.” “I can look after myself.” “But you don't have to.” Otoya twiddles his thumbs together.
“Anyway... Today is special! After all, you're here with me.” He raises a brow. “Hey, why are you so far away? Didn't you promise not to leave my side? Come sit by me. You're making me lonely...” He pouts again. “Promise you won't fall on me again?” “Not on purpose.” “Haha.” You move closer and the both of you talk about the day's events. Though the whole time, you couldn't help feel butterflies dance in your stomach.
“I had a great time today, Y/N.” “Me too.” “Everything was so wild during the day, but now all I hear is you.” His hand caressing your cheek. You gaze, getting lost in his eyes. “Those lips hold the voice I cherish most.” His thumb brushes over your bottom lip. Leaning forward his lips meet yours as they come together in a sweet kiss. You stay like that for a moment, then part. You turn away embarrassed. “Wait what's wrong? Don't turn away.” He giggles. “You left yourself open for that.” You laugh too.
“Look at me.” He turns your head and your eyes meet once more. “I'm sorry I guess I just wasn't expecting that...” He places both hands on the side of your face slowly pulling you into another kiss. “Were you expecting that?” “Hehe.” You wrap your arms around his neck and kiss him back. You melt into each other drawing out each kiss for as long as you could. “I don't know, were you expecting that?” You both laugh and he pulls you into his arms.
“Oh, Y/N...” He sighs. “I just want you all to myself.” “So selfish, your majesty.” “Hey, a king's orders are absolute you know. That being said, I order you to stay and talk all night to me.” “I guess I cant disobey direct orders.” “Hehe, no you can't.” You lay back and chat in his arms, steadily getting more sleepy you yawn.
“Will you stay with me tonight?” “I did arrange to stay for a few days.” “Really? He beams then suddenly gets nervous. “W-what is it?” You ask, both looking serious and sit up.
“Y/N, would you stay longer if I asked you to marry me?” Your eyes widened. “O-Otoya I-”
“I know it's sudden, I just can't wait. I want you to be mine.” “Are you sure? There are plenty of other princesses that are dying for your hand in marriage.” “Well of course there are other princesses, but you're the only one I have my eyes on. You're too special not to be my beloved.”
“Otoya...” A happy tear slides down your cheek but he wipes it away and holds your hands. “Hows about I ask you again tomorrow? More formally.” “Okay.”
You're unable to hold back the grin from your face. Marry Otoya? Being his friend is one thing but this is a dream come true.
“Oh! I almost forgot!” You get up and grab your purse shuffling around. “Close your eyes Otoya.” “Ok ok... You take the little box from your purse and open it to place a small wooden triangle in his hand. “You can open your eyes now.” He looks down at his hand to see a small triangular pick. “A pick?” He studies it. “For your guitar!”
“Wha-” reaching under the bed you pull out a brand new redwood guitar. “Wow! For me?! Are you sure?!” “Of course! Otoya takes the guitar running his fingers over the frets and strings. “Happy birthday Otoya.” He sets the guitar down by the nightstand beside him. “Thank you Y/N!” He tackles you to the bed holding you tight.
You spend the rest of the night giddily talking about your goals, dreams and aspirations for the future. Eventually falling asleep next to each other.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the morning you wake to a blushing Otoya combing his hand through your hair and your eyes flutter awake.
“Good morning, Y/N.” Otoya presses a kiss to your forehead. “Morning.” You yawn. “Did you sleep well?” “That was the best sleep I've had in a while.” Otoya beams. “Good, are you hungry? Would you like breakfast? I could have the cook bring us something.” “That sounds lovely.”
“I'll be right back!” Otoya rushes off to the kitchen and has a special breakfast made. He returns with the cook serving both of you a buffet.
“Otoya!! We cant eat all this!?!” "That's ok, there's plenty of variety so just pick what you want!” You share a large breakfast together in bed. Otoya insists on feeding you dessert, but after the feast you just had you couldn't possibly take another bite.
After a quick rest, Otoya leads you on a stroll through the garden. It's early spring and the flowers are just starting to bloom. You're walking along when you pull Otoya to a stop.
“Hibiscus!” You wander over to the colorful display of red, yellow, white and pink flowers. “Hibiscus is my favorite flower.” You hold back your hair and take in the sweet almost fruity fragrance. “Y/N.” Otoyas hand takes yours.
“We've known each other since we were kids. As the years have gone by I've realized how special you are to me as a friend and something more. I promise to love and protect you as I will my kingdom. With you by my side, I feel as if I can do anything. I will give you each and every one of these flowers and more.” Otoya kneels down in front of you.
“My heart belongs to you and only you.” You gasp as he opens the velvet box to reveal a dazzling yet subtle ring. “Say you'll be mine, forever and always.”
“Otoya...” You tear up once more. “Yes, of course I'll be yours!” He stood and took the ring out of the box placing it on your finger. You leap to hug him almost knocking him over in the process. This was better than you could ever imagine.
"Otoya, I love you." Your heart pounds as you pull back to look him in the eyes.
"I love you too, Y/N." You share a very heartfelt passionate kiss.
Otoya plucks a flower from one of the branches and tucks it in your hair.
“There, for my beautiful bride to be.” You plant a gentle kiss on his cheek and walk hand in hand back to the castle where you greet the queen.
You feel quite foolish when you realize that it was your parent's plan all along to get you two together, but it worked out so naturally you didn't care. You were getting married to the guy of your dreams, and that was a miracle within itself.
Your wedding was celebrated with your family and civilians from far and wide.
But with Otoya by your side, this truly was a dream come true.
Shackles pt4: A Rocky Start
“So let’s get started shall we?” A click of a button illuminates a completely white room devoid of windows. The gaurd reaches for Jasmine’s wrist and she promptly yanks a way and walks to the only chair in the middle of a room. She knew the drill already. Jasmine was at least gonna do it at her own pace.
The child sat down and placed both arms on the arm rest in between the thick leather straps. Her mind was racing; the nerves in her body already feeling like fire and making the chair creak with her slight trembling. “Let’s just get this over with already.” The soldier scoffs and tightens the straps before leaving the room. It wasn’t long before the door opens again with Sobek himself coming through it with a utility cart that has an array of tools. Each one unnerving her more. Regular needles, injections, a metal bar, wire, and worst of all, the shears. Jasmine can’t keep her eyes off them.
Sobek:So you’re causing trouble little one? I had I feeling I’d see you in this room again. You’re pretty feisty for a girl your age; certainly more grit than your brother it seems. Not to mention your parents.....you have your father’s charisma.
Jasmine:And then you tried to beat it out of him....
Sobek:Correction, I tried to carve it out of him. Unfortunately the man was beyond salvation much like your mother. *grabs injections*
The man methodically stares at the tip of it as he stands in front of her. Jasmine jumps slightly the moment Sobek’s hand grabs her arm.
Sobek:Don’t be scared, I’m not going to be as crude with you. Children....don’t survive that kind of strain.
The need goes into her arm easily. Jasmine stares at the mysterious clear liquid gets injected into her right arm. In mere seconds she started feeling strange. The room started getting even brighter to the point it was straining to keep both eyes completely open. A rapid pounded in her ears and Sobek’s calm grip felt more like a vice. Even the air itself stung each time she took a shallow breath. The man before her watched the drug kick in then snapped his fingers. The sound made her yelp in pain like a gunshot had went off right next to her. “Several hours of pure sensory overload should change your tune nicely.” He spoke in a hushed tone for her sake. It was last bit of mercy she would be given.
Sobek left the room but left the tools. His way or keeping her alert and making the girls own heartbeat a weapon against her. He walked into room that was right before her where the wall that would be her back wall was in fact a one way mirror. Connected to it was a panel with a variety of switches and knobs. He reached for one that was labeled temperature and dialed it down to forty degrees Fahrenheit then reached for another that increased volume. The only sound was feedback steadily rising. Waiting for just the level until.... “Aaaaaaaaaaaa~” he turned it back down on notch and could see Jasmine heaving; cold air visible with each exhale.
“Poor child. I’ll cure you in no time.”
Yang:Are you sure this is the right way?
Blake:I don’t travel in the desert Yang. This is just as much of a leap of faith for me as it is for you.
Jacquelyn:Gee I’m glad I can feel the trust in this group.
The three had been walking through the desert for at least half an hour now. It was the dead of night, cold, and the moon was the only witness to anything out here. Yang was not a happy camper about any of that. She might’ve been aggressive to Jacquelyn earlier today but it was from a mix of shock and other things that were going on. Fighting a maiden was absolutely in every worse case scenario she came up with. Yang had sparred with her mother and helped Ruby push back Cinder in battle, however that only told her how different maidens all are from one another. Case in point, the floor right below them.
Right now the three women were walking in a straight line about a foot away from each other. Jacquelyn was of course in the front. Not simply because she’s the one with direction, but because she’s keeping them out of danger. Her powers allow her to change the sand below their feet into rock temporarily; a trick like that had to come with tons of practice. It stayed long enough in that state for Yang to tail her. Followed by Blake and the sand returned to normal.
Yang:Can’t you make this strip of solid land wider? You aren’t exactly lacking in resources.
Jacquelyn:The point is to disturb the ground as little as possible. White Fang and Nightstalkers burrow underground and sense vibrations in shifting sands so they can set sinkholes in appropriate spots. If I change the terrain too much then I’m bound to attract something.
Yang:White Fang....? You can’t be talking about the group right?
Blake:The group got its name from a grimm indigenous to menagerie. They’re build is almost like an dingo and they walk on all fours constantly unlike beowulves. Their face is a strange mix of feline and canine structure. Digging is sort of their thing and you might’ve guessed but their canines are white as bone; incredibly long too.
Jacquelyn:Being bitten by them with or without aura is a real pain. Let’s not deal with that shall we?
Yang:Why would your dad name an organization after a grimm?
Blake:One White Fang is ferocious and will do just about anything to get by.
Jacquelyn:A pack becomes organized and follows the alpha. In numbers they can shape the land around them and will try and stand against just about anything that stops them. That unity is the reason right?
Blake:Adam tell you that?
Jacquelyn:Who else? You gonna tell me that was a lie?
Blake:N...no....
Yang:......So Nightstalkers?
Jacquelyn:They’re basically Deathstalkers but prefer to trap their enemies instead of coming above ground. They do not waste time. The moment you fall into a trap they will try and sting you to stun you, then immediately eat you.
Yang:Yet these are the ones without “death” in their name.
Jacquelyn:I don’t name them. I just try to avoid them. I almost got eaten once but luckily I wasn’t alone.
Yang:I’m pretty sure magic helped.
Jacquelyn:That too...
Yang:Speaking of which, I can’t imagine this stone stepping trick is easy. Must have taken a lot of practice to get it right.
Blake:Yang....
Jacquelyn:It’s fine Blake. I know she’s gauging my strength; I can feel your eyes on me the entire time. It must be a bit unnerving for you to not to be the toughest person around right now isn’t it? Adam had a similar problem.
Yang:Never compare us.
That was a nerve hit Jacquelyn expected. The way Yang said that was enough to tell just how serious she was about it. A blast of warm air against her back was also a sign that the blonde was quite literally heated. It didn’t help that Yang probably could tell that she said that last part on purpose.
Jacquelyn:I was simply making conversation. Are you always like this? You must save hundreds on heating; I know I do. My maiden powers were given to me from a very young age. So yes, I’ve had plenty of time to learn “tricks” like controlling sediments.
Blake:Given?
Jacquelyn:From my mother. She lost her life when I was seven. Been more or less on my ever since. Well I guess that’s not true. James and even Ozpin made sure I lived well; it was in their best interest after all. They taught-
Blake:Wait. Your mom was all you had?
Yang:No town? No dad or anything. A grimm simply killed your maiden powered mom and left you defenseless.
Jacquelyn:Sigh...I said she lost her life; never mentioned any grimm. As for my dad and the village I grew up in, well, they’re the reason my mom lost her life in the first place.
This new information made the partners stop on their tracks. Yang looks at Blake who is just as surprised as she is. They look forward to see Jacquelyn staring at both of them. Her face was calm and more befuddled by the reason stopped.
Jacquelyn:Uhhh we’re sort on a time crunch and I can see my house from here. What’s with the stopping?
Yang:You just told us something heavy. Like really heavy.
Blake:Your dad and own people killed your mom?
Jacquelyn:Don’t forget smashed my hands and tried killing me as well hehe.....*frowns* people fear power, especially power they don’t understand. I don’t let it weigh me down anymore so no need for it to start weighing you both down. Let’s get a move on alright?
Blake:O...okay. I just don’t believe I could handle something like that if I was in your shoes; even with time that’s-
Yang:Extreme. Traumatic doesn’t even begin to describe it. People change after that. Not necessarily for the best, but to survive.
Jacquelyn:You’re not entirely wrong. I wouldn’t exactly say I’m the best version of myself or probably even the most sane.
Yang:That’s not what I want to hear. *scowls*
Jacquelyn:Would you have preferred a lie? I know how you and Blake feel about that sort of thing. You know, people pretending to be what they aren’t? Listen I get why you’re doing psychoanalysis on me, trying to figure me out, and you’ve made it very clear from the start that everything about this situation upsets you. I can understand that; respect it even. However, you’re being really annoying and pissing me off so either ask direct question or shut up.
Yang:Oh you have another thing coming if you think you can talk to me like that.
Jacquelyn:What are you gonna do about it? Did you learn enough about me to think you handle me.
Blake:Guys.....
Yang:I know I can handle you. I just wanted to know how much effort I was gonna need.
Blake:Guys yo-
Jacquelyn:That’s big talk from someone who needed help from her partner and bike to take down Adam. I beat him first try you know? Complete child’s play and I did it over and over again. I bet you figured that at though. After all... you don’t see any metal parts on me right?
Yang:Oh I am gonna-
Blake:GUYS! THE SAND!
Jacquelyn and Yang stop arguing and look around them. Moving mounds circle around them. Their speed makes it hard to count but it’s clear there’s a massive pack around them. Yang starts rolling her shoulders and puts her fist up. “So much for avoiding conflict.”
“Yeah well getting angry in the middle of nowhere might as well be a dinner bell.” Blake said with annoyance as she cocked her gun. “What were you two thinking?”
Yang bites her lips. “Not my finest moment I’ll admit. What’s the best way to deal with White Fang?”
“Ugh, against these numbers, we don’t.” Jacquelyn raises her right foot and then slams it against the sand. Her eyes glow and the ground below all three turns to rock and raises into air ten feet; creating a pillar of rock. Blake and Yang watch Jacquelyn take a knee I’m exhaustion. ‘Damn...I’m more drained than I thought.’ Her body trembling slightly. “We’re going to have to wait.”
Yang:Wait!? We can’t just-
Jacquelyn:There’s at least thirty down there and trust me, you do not want to fight these things right now.
Blake:She’s right. I can definitely hear more of them around. Who knows how many sink wholes are around. Nice going you two; we were almost there.
Yang:I...Jacquelyn, can’t you float or move this hunk of rock to your house? I can see the oasis. That’s the place right?
Jacquelyn:I am tired and moving the entire rock causes vibrations. No way you slice it, we are stuck until they leave.
Yang:....*sits down* Shit.... how long is that gonna take?
Jacquelyn:Few hours maybe? I don’t know when grimm give up.
Yang:*lays down* Juuuussssst great.
Blake:Hopefully before the Sun comes out. I hope no one notices we’re gone too long.
She layed down on her back and stared at the shattered moon. Thoughts lingered aimlessly one after another; so many things were on her mind to keep up with. So many things that she wanted to say about the situation but didn’t. Instead she laid there quietly. ‘Sun, what would you do if you were here? Probably find a way to make those two get along no doubt. Hopefully whatever you’re doing is a walk in the park.’
xxxx
Ilia:Sun this is crazy.
Neptune:You can’t be serious. This is a life or death decision.
Ilia:If you screw up then that’s it. Your life is over. Just another man who lost it all in the streets of Vacou.
Sun:*sweating* Guys relax, I got this.
The trip goes silent as well does the audience around them. Many on lookers watch the monkey faunus stare at three upside cups in front of a well known peddler and part time scam artist. It all comes down this, one cup holds the boy’s future while the others hold despair. Slowly he reaches for the cup in the middle.
Peddler:Are you sure about that one?
Sun:I’m as sure as the rising tides and the fish that travel along them.
He lifts the cup triumphantly to find....nothing. The crowd groans in mass disappointment and dispersed in seconds. Neptune dropped to the ground in defeat. While Ilia face palmed. “Hahahaha! Better luck next time kid” the peddler laughed heavily and proceeded to gather his things and walk off with lien in his pocket and a new pair of goggles.
Neptune:Un....believable.
Sun:I know right? I was so sure it was the middle one.
Neptune:You just lost my money and goggles!
Sun:For the chance to get anything for free he had. That dude always has the best gems. You know we always gotta pay the minimum fee for those sort of deals.
Neptune:So why didn’t you borrow any money from Ilia!!!!?
Ilia:Because you’re his best friend. Plus I couldn’t have an invested interest in the wager. That means I’d have to watch the whole time instead of stealing from him.
Neptune:Still you-....you what?
The girl smiled and put her hands together before rubbing the right one over left and revealing a black diamond ring. “Sun taught me some things. A fitting jewel for your future bride to be huh?”
Sun:That’s if she says yes. *takes the ring* You are right though. I can’t wait to show Blake!
Neptune:Hopefully she doesn’t ask a receipt.
Ilia:Pffft just don’t mention one. Let’s go back to the hotel before-
“My Diamond!”
Neptune:Scatter?
Sun and Ilia:Scatter.....
All three make a dash in different direction through the busy crowd with laughter in their voice. Well, two of them at least were laughing. Ilia watched her idiotic enemy turned best friend climb up on buildings and start booking it like there was no tomorrow. ‘Yeah like that isn’t obvious.’ She took a different approach; maneuvering through people almost like a snake so any pesky peddlers couldn’t get a fixed location on her. The moment she had the opportunity to duck into an alleyway she did so with a gleeful hop; satisfied her years of espionage had not gone to waste or gotten rusty. “Child’s play...”
“Having fun, you little thief?” Said an unfamiliar voice behind her that made her jump. ‘Okay, maybe not child’s play.’ Ilia put up her hands and slowly turned around. “Listen if a peddler that rigs games by secretly hiding things in his sleeves was-” her train of thought was cut off by what stood in front of her. Ilia has expected an angry peddler or some sort cop. Not several armed men wearing cloaks and gripping guns. Each one giving her a look as if she was cornered prey. “Asking.....for....it.”
Captor:Well look at we stumbled across here men. Ilia Amitola, another sick beast in need of curing. The doctor will be pleased.
Elbow Weekend, March 2017, London
Now then, I’m back in Germany, and trying to soothe the post gig/London Sad with lots and lots of Elbow - praised be the lovely people who actually manage more than this
A post shared by Sarah (@sara_1979) on Mar 7, 2017 at 7:13am PST
Lately I’m much too absorbed in the actual gig than to take anything more than a few blurry pics. Although I did get a few decent ones on both days (did bring my camera for the seated day as phone does well close but not as well when further away). And mostly these days it’s more of a reminder that I was actually there than anything else. Others usually help with better pics and videos. THANK YOU for that!
Anyhow: my London trip was quite magnificent!!! Absolutely fantastic and wonderful despite the rain and the cold and the drunk idiot in the bunk bed above! (Thankfully only for one night but still, that really sucked!)
Arrived Friday late evening, and even though I was worried about having to travel all by myself this late, it worked out just fine. Sadly mentioned drunk idiot, who stumbled in at half past 1, kept us all awake most of the night with his pissed ramblings - he even tried to stop a snorer who didn’t disturb any of us but that drunk asshole (if he would’ve shut up for 5 minutes he would’ve fallen asleep instantly and we all would’ve had some peace. Ah well, I’m sure he felt our little revenge in form of NOT being considerate of his hangover the next morning! *hehe*)
I was ready and set for the day; first order of business was to meet up with @daysofstorm and FINALLY meeting @naturalshocks for the very first time!!! Breakfast at Speedy’s which was lovely! So happy to manage the time to meet them and have a lovely morning! After that I was off to meet up with another friend; we had a wander around Regent’s Park and Primrose Hill, and would’ve made it to Hampstead Heath if it hadn’t got rather late, and I needed to go back to get ready for my concert.
Due to traffic and weather we arrived later than planned but we still managed to get a good spot in the rather short queue (it grew much longer later on; but we already noticed that people tend to turn up about half an hour before doors open for Elbow gigs). And since my friend got some really good Karma when it comes to gigs, we managed a great spot in the front row!!! (Third time with her <3) We were very happy! The support wasn’t as bad as the last time (still shuddering, thinking about them), and at 8:45pm it was FINALLY Elbow time!!!
The second those guys walked on stage I started smiling and didn’t stop for a long time! HACH! I don’t know what it is, and how they keep doing this every single time, but for the entire length of the gig I forgot everything and existed only in the moment!! Sooo damn glorious to see, hear and feel the magic that is Elbow’s music for me!! Absolutely beautiful! And feel one does, with every single bone, and it’s the most amazing thing. I’ve been to many gigs before but these guys, this wonderful, band, keeps doing things that get to me like no band or musician before! And it’s not the stage show: there’s a few (beautifully put) lights but no huge pyro or anything, just the boys on stage, doing what they do best, and it’s absolutely magical!!! It was a great mix of the new songs with older ones, and the audience was incredible as well! The usual singalong songs were of course fantastic, as always! When you stand among hundreds and you’re singing along like one??? Most incredible thing EVER!!! (Sadly Head For Supplies wasn’t on the list; I knew that before; but I would’ve LOVED to hear that one live as it’s one of my favs!) And even though their songs aren’t actually danceable when you listen to the records, live they really really ARE! Especially Magnificent which lately made me all teary eyed for some reason; not on those days! It made me smile like an idiot, made me sing along and dance like a lunatic!) I’m just sooo very much in love with this band!! If you ever get a chance, go and see them, you won’t regret it. These guys are a band you want to EXPERIENCE!!! It was over way too quickly (90 minutes fly by when you’re in the presence of these geniuses!), but my friend managed to get one of the set-lists which made her (and me) very happy! We floated out of the venue, said goodbye as we had to go in different directions, and I made my way back to the hostel (with a quick stop for much needed sugar before bed).
I slept like a baby for 8 hours straight before I headed out to meet with another friend again. She was held up tho, so I strolled around Soho and Covent Garden, and let me tell you there’s worse things to do on a lovely Sunday morning - less crowded than during the week. I accidentally stumbled onto Oxford Street but it wasn’t as bad cause normally I’d avoid it like the plague! Met up with friend around 1 and we had a wander around St James’s Park, met squirrels and geese before it started pouring down and she got drenched because of the wind. So we said our goodbye, and I went back to hostel to dry off and then met with L again for the second night of magic and music.
This time we had seats, and as much as I liked being able to sit after two days of running and standing around, Elbow is NOT a band I want to see sitting down ever again; not as long as I can avoid it! Didn’t take away from the amazing show (and you can actually see the WHOLE stage, and the lights and everything) but you’re rather restricted in your (chair)dancing!!! *lol* Plus, people kept coming and going up there, and made the entire show a bit... unruly? restless, I guess. Was a teeny tiny bit annoying, and I can’t recommend that! As much as my feet thanked me, I’d rather stand another 90 minutes. *shrugs* But that’s just me! Second show was just as incredible as the first; the setlist got switched around a bit, they changed the order of songs, and so it felt like a completely different show! I wished I had the words to describe the feeling of being in an Elbow audience, feel the music like it’s something that touches you; how it makes you feel to hear Guy’s voice all around you; how insane it sounds when every single one of the people around you sings almost an entire song completely on their own, and Guy just stands there with that big happy smile and drinks it in!! I mean, he’s done this a million times and yet it feels as if he’s doing this for the first time!!! Such a lovely lovely man! And such a happy man - there’s a line in one of their songs that says “I’m having a baby”. And since that’s true (due end of March; he’s cutting it REALLY close with this tour), a) the audience was cheering every time and b) he’s grinning like crazy!!! That was such a special and sweet moment!!! And the audience is such a mixed crowd: all ages, from young ones (which includes L and me) up to people in their 60′s and 70′s (who are still singing and dancing along which is soo cool to see). I guess it has something to do with them being around for so long already, and that all their songs can mean something totally differently to people. We talked about that, the same song means two totally different things to her and to me, and I guess that goes for everyone else as well. Depending on the mood, or your personal life, a song that’s sad for you, can be a happy one for them. It’s strange, I never had that before, usually a song’s meaning is pretty straight forward. Not Elbow’s. And that’s one of the many reasons I adore them. Also, sometimes one song comes on, and it’S a good one but you don’t really have a connection with it, and then, days, weeks, months later, you listen to it again, and it suddenly means something. And that’s beautiful. But also makes you realize that you simply cannot have their music playing in the background, you have to actually LISTEN to it, listen to the lyrics and the music itself for it to be the magical music it is!!!
My friend had to leave early to catch her train home so she dashed off right after the last song (we said our goodbyes before the encore), and I was on my own again, more or less floating out of the building, just following the stream of people - which was helpful cause the station we went down the day before was closed and I had to take another way. *hehe* Just follow the people and you shall find it! (I even had a lovely moment with a fellow concert goer on the tube; handsome guy opposite who kept glancing over; probably was weirded out by me grinning to myself like a loon but then he tilted his phone so I could see he was playing the Little Fictions. (I mean, that was definitely on purpose, usually phones don’t show it like that when you listen to music) And as he left (two stations before mine), he kept looking back at me, and yes, I smiled at him! *grins* Was a very nice ego boost so... *shrugs*).
And on Monday I had to pack and leave again; left suitcase at Victoria so I could squeeze in a little visit to the river; just a coffee at the National Theatre (can’t go to London and not go there; even though it was only for half an hour). Bus back to airport, uneventful flight back home where my parents (bless them!) picked me up and then I fell into bed and slept for 10 hours and now I’m going to take a long hot bath to ease the aching limbs!
But as always, it was worth every pain and soreness to see those guys, meet up with friends and have a total blast in my beautiful London! And I will feed of this amazing feeling, full of music and magic and smiles for a long time! I’m purposefully avoiding anything RL at the moment to keep this happy for as long as possible! And right now there’s nothing that can taint what Guy and the rest of the band gave me!!! Bliss, I tell ya! So much bliss!!!! Now, have some pics while I go and soak in the bathtub!
