max’s reaction game with the tennis balls 😭😭😭 this too can be kitten max

This is extremely silly and possibly cute.

Max is not a kitten. He might look like a kitten, tiny and soft in Daniel's lap, but he still thinks like a human, understanding everything that happens around him and processing it like a human. Sure, being in kitten form helps him regulate his feelings, and his senses are sharper, but that doesn't change who he is.

And Max is not a kitten.

Except.

Except sometimes Max is a kitten.

Daniel hadn't really noticed at first, he wasn't the biggest cat expert, but with time he had started seeing things. The way Max kneaded when he was trying to relax, or how he would run around unprompted sometimes, or the way he scrunched up his nose. And the way he would get distracted by some things.

It had started with a piece of string.

Daniel had been playing with a piece of string from one of the training mannequins for most of the evening, wounding it around his fingers and then letting it go, swinging it around, knotting it and then loosening it again. He wasn't really paying attention, but Max apparently had.

It had taken him way too long to notice Max's eyes, fixed on the piece of string, following it with so much attention Daniel was sure he was not even aware of anything going on around them. He had kept playing, watching Max's focus never waver, Max's fingers twitching minutely, as if wanting to reach forward.

Max had snapped out of it eventually, but Daniel had kept the string. He had found it again days later, abandoned on the stool in his room, and had started playing with it again. Only this time, Max had been in his kitten form.

One second Daniel was distractedly twisting the string around his hand, reading a letter from his sister, the next he had a cat clawing at it, trying to tug it away.

He had been so surprised he had let go, Max scuttling away with the string in his mouth, rolling around with it on the floor for a few seconds before abandoning it again.

Daniel had tentatively reached for it, and as soon as he was moving it in the air, Max was jumping up, trying to get it.

Daniel had been delighted.

Not only it was fun and Max looked adorable playing, but it was incredible to know Max was just. Letting himself be. Go along with his instincts without feeling like he should hide them, because he knew Daniel was safe.

Sure, Max had been very embarrassed about it all the day after, but it hadn't taken much for Daniel to reassure him it was fun, he had loved it.

It wasn't something they did regularly, but sometimes Max would shift and then tug at Daniel's clothes, piece of string in his mouth.

Daniel wasn't sure what was about it that helped Max feel better, if just letting go and not thing, or being able to play after having to grow up so fast, having so many responsibilities on his shoulders every day, but Max's purrs always sounded more satisfied afterwards.

And then one day Max had shown up with a leather ball.

Daniel still doesn't know where Max had found it, it was small and it didn't really bounce much, but Max had dropped it into Daniel's lap and then, before he could ask any questions, immediately shifted.

Which was a very clear sign of I don't want to talk about it.

Daniel had experimentally thrown the ball.

The kitten had ran across the room, bounding along to catch the ball as quickly as possible, rolling around with it and then pouncing again, before pushing it back to Daniel, little body almost vibrating in excitement.

So Daniel had thrown the ball again, this time higher up, and had watched Max leap way higher than he was expecting to catch it midair. He hadn't been able to help himself, cheering and praising Max, watching him revel in it even in his kitten form.

Daniel had kept throwing the ball, again and again, until Max's movements had grown sluggish, and he had started ignoring the ball, deciding to climb up Daniel's leg instead to press his little nose against his stomach.

It had become rarer as Max had become busier with his duties with the King, and Daniel's schedule had started to diverge from his, but sometimes Max still went to look for the ball, dropping it in Daniel's hand and then turning. And Daniel never said no.
