Uncool 50 - Video killed the lazy Buggles headline
Part of my Uncool50 series, an autobiography through songs.
Three excellent videos this time.
youtube
“Take on me” by A-ha, takes our representative out of the café and right into the pages of the comic she’s reading. The hand-drawn rotoscoped animation was a work of love; the seamless meld with actual footage remains a joy to watch.
This was the first single I bought with my own money, £1.55 to hear Morten Pål and Mags over and over again.
youtube
“Cloudbusting” by Kate Bush, a miniature movie starring Donald Sutherland.
If “Wuthering heights” had introduced the concept of pop music, this single helped coalesce pop as high art. As much an ear-worm as A-ha or Red Box (qv), but somehow the sort of culture my parents and grandparents clearly approved of.
Yes, Kate Bush gets two singles into the top 50. No other act does.
youtube
"Press" by Paul McCartney. Right there, that's it, yes. (Are you perfectly sure about this? - Ed)
My parents had a microscopic record collection. Lots of light classical, some ABBA albums, Simon and Garfunkel, and The Beatles' Red and Blue albums. Of the Fab Four, John Lennon's songs were new before I got into pop, George Harrison made one LP, and Ringo Starr is the voice for Thomas the Tank Engine.
Paul McCartney has always been a welcome guest, and much of his 80s work made my longlist here. "We all stand together" is completely awesome, “Once upon a long ago” plays for nostalgia. "My brave face" and "This one" are tremendous songs, “No more lonely nights” is a touching tearjerker.
For pure cheek, sass, and general Fab Macca Whacky Thumbs Aloft!!-ness, you can't beat "Press". Paul makes the music he loves, gets an audience because he’s the most familiar face in town, and it's all completely carefree and relaxed. Same for the video, filmed without permission on the Tube, it's relaxed!Macca surprising and delighting his fans.
Next time: crushes arrive.

Thank you @music-on-canvas for the tag 💙
Build your perfect band! (tag game)
choose something for every category by recombining elements of different existing bands or musicians to create the perfect band according to your preferences.
This was tough, because I don't think I'd want to change anything about my faves: Duran & Wings but here goes...
Number of Band Members: 5
Band Name: "The...Duran Monkees"! 🐒 (I'm sorry this is already sounding bad) Alright how about "Hodge-Podge"! 😂🙈 No I'll go with "Duran Stardust". I guess. 🤨
Band Members (1 per Instrument): lead singer - David Bowie, guitarist - Jimmy Page, bassist - John Taylor, drummer - Tony Thompson, piano/keyboards & backing vocals - Paul McCartney
Additional Background Vocals: Ella Fitzgerald, Tina Turner, Annie Lennox (background...who am I kidding...they'd out-sing all the dudes in the band like they always do. Okay so maybe it'll be 8 band members). Guest Vocalists: Madonna, (80s-90s era) Prince, Simon Le Bon, George Michael, Jimi Hendrix
Decade: 70s - 80s
Instruments: acoustic guitar, drums, bass, electric guitar, rhythm guitar, sitar (guest starring George Harrison & Ravi Shankar), synthesizer, piano, harpsichord, flute (guest starring Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull), violin (guest starring Sharon Corr from The Corrs) and some other random instruments
Singer's voice like: David Bowie/Jim Morrison/Paul McCartney/Greg Lake/Simon Le Bon (feeling indecisive again)
Genre(s): rock, pop, glam rock, prog rock, folk rock, synth pop, jazz
Album Cover: (I know it's a Madonna album but I was really wowed by this album art)
Tumblr media
Album Title: Cosmic Station
Song Title: Sing Blue Silver Moon
Style of Songs: So Glad To See You Here - Paul McCartney, Wings (and more), Heart Of The Sunrise - Yes, New Religion - Duran Duran

A WOMAN OF DISTINCTION
March 16, 1950
Tumblr media
Directed by Edward N. Buzzell
Produced by Buddy Adler for Columbia Pictures
Written by Charles Hoffman; additional dialogue by Frank Tashlin; story by Ian McLellan Hunt and Hugo Butler
Tumblr media
Synopsis ~ College dean Susan Middlecott thinks there's no room in her life for romance until she meets Professor Alec Stevenson, British lecturer on astronomy, who is in possession of a keepsake of Susan's that he wants to return. Desperate for publicity, lecture bureau press agent Teddy Evans magnifies this into a great romance. The efforts of both dignified principals to quash the story have the opposite effect.
PRINCIPAL CAST

Our heroes:  Star in a Guy Ritchie movie.
What important things did we learn about:
Callen:  Dressed as a clown for a Halloween party. Sam:  Not terrified of clowns, just doesn’t like them. Kensi:  Snipering with ease.   Deeks:  On the outside of his snipering comfort zone. Eric:  Not around. Nell:  See Eric. Hetty:  While absent, plying bad guys with whiskey.
What not so important things did we learn about:
Callen:  From Deptford. Sam:  Family is from Peckham. Kensi:  A Bromley twist-and-twirl. Deeks:  Croydon. Eric:  See Nell. Nell:  Not around. Hetty:  Absent.
Who's down with OTP:  They are snipering together.
Who's down with BrOTP:  Sam and Callen are fine but I loved the friendship and respect Ricky and Frankie shared.  True ride or die guys.
Any pressing need for a young FBI Agent:  Not unless he could translate British English into SoCal English.
Who is running the team this week?  Fans of British Cinema.
Fashion review:  Blue checkered buttoned-down shirt for Callen.  Sam wears a dark-blue, long sleeve tee-shirt.  Kensi is wearing a grey-tee shirt.  Deeks has blue tee.  At the poker mansion, Callen is in medium blue suit, white dress-shirt with a blue tie and a tie clip.  Sam is wearing a red non-suit suit with a black tee.  Kensi is in a black, sleeveless, sequence gown.  Deeks is wearing a dark blue, pinstripe suit with a cornflower blue polo that has white piping on the collar.
Music:  “Green Onions” by Booker T and the MG’s is playing as Ricky sets up the undercover identities.  “Every Trick in the Book” by The Allergies is playing in the pub at the end.
Any notable cut scene:  No but I was hoping there would be a behind the scenes piece for this episode.  There wasn’t.
Quote:   Rick:  “They spotted the old bill.” Callen:  “English?” Frankie:  “We invented English.  It is our language.  We can do with it what we want.”
Runner up:  Sam:  “Enough of the rhyming.  I hate rhyming.”  LL Cool J hates rhyming – you saw it here first.
Anything else:   The previously-s are Granger promising to help Jennifer Kim on the Santa Monica Pier, Jennifer working with Callen and Sam, Granger apologizing for not being around as Jennifer’s father.
In Hampstead Heath, England, four men exit a SUV outside a fancy home.  Two are wearing ski-masks.  The man without the mask, a Mr. Cooper, is taken to the door and ordered to turn off his burglar alarm.  Also, if Cooper types in teh panic code, the police will learn about everything Cooper has inside his home.  Cooper thinks his captor’s breath smells like cat pee.
Inside the home, Cooper is ordered to open the safe.  As a warn to his captors, Cooper promises to kill their families and their pets if he learns their identies.  The fellow running the show threatens to blow off Cooper’s head but that won’t get teh safe opened.  A threat to amputate finger and then other more delicate places makes Cooper a bit more cooperative. There are bars of gold in the safe.  The three men leave with duffles filled with the gold bars.
Traveling to the Royal Air Force Base Lakenheath in England, the thieves are all dress members of the English Air Force.  In an airplane hanger are coffins draped with US flags.  The gold bars are going into an empty coffin before being sent to Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.  A man in a dark suit and a hearse is there for the special coffin.
The hearse and its driver wind up in a garage where a large man is grilling.  The driver turns over the casket and wants a meet set up.  The man grilling is surprised to see the gold bars – didn’t think the man in the dark suit and his associates could pull it off.   He has a buddy mocking the man in the suit.  The man grilling does as well.
The man in the dark suit gets a phone call from Frankie, the leader of the thieves in London.  Frankie will be in LA in 16-hours.  They are going to get the man in the suit’s “girl” back.  While the call is going on, the griller – Andy – is mocking the man in the suit.  He asks Frankie to remind him to kill Andy when they’ve everything is wrapped up.
Sam and Kensi are waiting in the Challenger – Deeks’s CI gave them the location of a buy.  Kensi points out the minivan they were told would be there.  Sam is a little out of sorts – Kensi asks if he wants to talk about it.  Sam doesn’t know what to talk about.  Kensi suggests why she is working with Sam while Callen is “forced to work with Deeks today.”  Sam is angry that Callen showed up at a Halloween party they both attended dressed as a clown.  Sam doesn’t like clowns.  When Callen showed up to work wearing a clown nose that day, Sam thought it was best if Callen annoyed Deeks instead.  Callen has lost his Hellcat privileges, according to Sam.
Kensi laughs at the concept of Hellcat privileges until she realizes that Sam thinks riding in the Hellcat is truly a privilege.  Callen and Deeks facetime Sam wearing clown noses, wondering if they should pick up the people in the minivan.  Amused, then suddenly serious, Kensi calls Callen and Deeks disrespectful – asks if he wants her to talk to Callen and Deeks.  Kensi of course, is also wearing a clown nose.  Sam remains unamused.
The minivan leaves with Sam and Kensi in in tow.  Callen and Deeks are in the big black SUV, cutting off the minivan.  Inside are Frankie, the man who picked up the coffin, Andy and his buddy.  Inside the trunk is nothing.  Andy’s buddy was Deeks’s informant.  Whatever he promised Deeks was not in the back of the minivan.
In a very talky but entertaining bit of exposition, the two men - Frankie and friend Ricky (the man in the suit) - explain that Andy the griller was their boss years ago but now is helping with a problem.  The men wouldn’t mind a spot of tea, either.  When not grilling, Andy is an arms dealer who stole the MAHEM weapons system.  MAHEM shoots molten metal into armored vehicles.  The two men think the weapon sounds “very Star Wars-y.”  NCIS thought the weapon would be in the van.  Ricky and Frankie can’t help so Callen and Sam hope they enjoy the next 15-years in jail.
Ricky would like NCIS to help him.  He starts cooperating.  Andy stole the MAHEM system but was looking for far more money than anyone was willing to pay.  Ricky was approached by a man named Steve McMillian.  McMillian wanted Ricky to get Andy to lower his price.  Ricky has been out of the crime business for years – he’s reformed, changed his life.  After Ricky turned him down, Rick’s daughter Angela was kidnapped.  Ricky told Andy to sell the system – Ricky would make up the price difference.
Frankie jumps in.  He “acquired” the necessary funds from a despicable criminal in London and shipped the funds to the US.  Frankie joined Ricky in LA and traveled to Santa Clarita to drop off the weapon system and that’s where NCIS “jaspered the whole thing.”  NCIS’s involvement had McMillian’s people run and Ricky still doesn’t have his daughter.
Fatima comes on comms with a British accent.  Callen and Sam are not amused.  Sam is also not aware it is Fatima – he thinks it Nell (who is visiting her Mom).  Callen wonders why does everyone in Ops pretend to have an accent.  Sam wants to know what Scotland Yard told Fatima but without the accent.  Ricky and Frankie were criminals but have been clean for years.  Frankie even volunteers at a hospital.  Andy Green, the arms dealer, is wanted for a long list of crimes, including murder.  The British government wants him extradited right away.
Kensi and Deeks arrive.  They see Ricky and Frankie as good guys who made bad decisions for the right reasons.  Micky, Deeks’s informant and Andy’s buddy, is a complete idiot according to Deeks.  He confused the weapons drop location with the kidnapping drop.  Deeks starts dropping into an English accent, much to Callen and Sam’s dismay.  Ricky really doesn’t care what happens to him – he just wants his daughter back.
Ricky thinks if they are going to get MAHEM and his daughter back, Steve McMillian is the place to start.  Fatima finds a Steve McMillian she thinks could be the right guy and Ricky confirms it is.  Frankie thinks Fatima is the name of NCIS’s supercomputer – like Alexa and Siri.  Callen won’t confirm or deny.  Kensi and Deeks are going with Ricky and Frankie to see McMillian.  Now Kensi has an English accent and Callen is really not amused.
In the Chevy Excursion SUV, Deeks drives with Kensi in the front seat, Ricky and Frankie in the back.  Deeks approaches McMillian’s house only to see the door forced opened.  He enters with Kensi – is leaving Ricky and Frankie outside to their own devices a good idea – and finds McMilian shot and bleeding out on his living room rug.  Kensi asks McMillian who shot him.  “Bottoms” is the answer just before McMillian expires.
Home security shows McMillian opening the door to a man he seemed to know only to be pushed into the residence with several men in hoodies following.  McMillian grabbed the man at the door’s throat – he should have DNA of his attacker under his fingernails.  Using McMillian’s GPS, Fatima found he regularly visited a home in Lake Sherwood.  Sam thinks it looks like a rock star’s mansion.
Kensi shows the mansion to Ricky and Frankie.  Ricky doesn’t recognize the place but Frankie does.  It is owned by “Super Fat” Willie who runs a big poker game every day.  There are five or six tables going at any time and all the players are British.  There is no way the team can just pull up and ask questions.  Kensi mentions “Bottoms”.  Deeks thinks that’s the name of an arms dealer.  Frankie disagrees – it could be a card player/cheater, someone who deals from the bottom of the deck.  Frankie was a card cheat – “a damn fine one” – he knows things.  Deeks thinks this is great – they all go to the house, Frankie spots the card cheat and they have the killer.  It doesn’t work that way, Frankie explains.  British citizens only.  Deeks thinks they can pass – he’s seen “Mary Poppins”.  Ricky doesn’t think looking like a skateboarder is going to get Deeks in.
In a terrific montage, Ricky explains that everyone’s look, jewelry and mannerisms have to be right.  Callen is from Deptford, Sam is from Peckham, Kensi is a Bromley twist and twirl (a girl) while Deeks is from Croydon.  Everything matters here – the jewelry, the cologne, the clothes are all specific from their fake hometowns.  The vehicles they drive also have to be fine British cars.  Kensi and Deeks arrive as a couple followed by Callen, Sam, Ricky and Frankie.
Super Fat Willie acts as a matre’d – assigning Kensi and Deeks to one table, Sam to a second and Callen a third.  Ricky is moved to the back while Frankie floats over to Callen.  Frankie notices right away that their dealer is dealing from the bottom of the pile.  Franke winds up winning his hand.  Callen walks away, Frankie takes his winnings and moves to the bar.
Ricky approaches Frankie.  Frankie misses the life a little.  Ricky talks him down.  The dealer at Callen and Frankie’s table was cheating with help from the player at his immediate right.  Looking around, however, Frankie sees a lot of people cheating.  He wonders if this is nothing more than one big con being run by Super Fat Willie.  When Callen’s dealer steps out for a smoke, Callen and Sam follow.  The dealer is Michael Giger and he tells Callen and Sam, who have identified themselves as NCIS, that he doesn’t know Steven McMillian.
Joining Kensi and Deeks, Frankie notices immediately that their dealer is also working from the bottom of the deck.  He’s also not nearly as smooth as the first dealer.  Under the table, Kensi is working her foot up the dealer’s leg.  She leaves and the dealer asks to be relieved.  The dealer follows Kensi up to a bedroom in the mansion.  Deeks pulls up the rear.  In the bedroom, the second dealer doesn’t recall knowing Steve McMillian. While Callen and Sam are questioning their dealer and Kensi and Deeks are questioning theirs, a fight breaks out in the cards room.  It seems Frankie was cheating – “it’s like a reflex.”
Both the dealers accuse the other of being “Bottoms”.  Ricky wants to beat the truth of them.  He’s happy to show Deeks how if someone has a crowbar.  They dealers are off to the boat shed.  Frankie approves – there are likely more crowbars and hammers there.  Frankie even mentions a dentist drill.  Good thing Deeks is putting one of the dealers in a car when that suggestion was made.
Fatima tells Callen and Sam that the FBI found DNA on Steve McMilian.  Callen is worried about search warrants and time – they need to get the DNA from the dealers now.  Irish whiskey is suggested by Frankie.
At the boat shed, Callen brings in the whiskey, courtesy of Hetty.  He explains that they aren’t in all that much trouble and the dealers both enjoy a glass.  Callen pours seconds just before Kensi arrives to announce last call.  She bags and tags the dealers’ cups.  Sam explains the wonderful world of DNA to the men.
A few hours later, Deeks arrives with the results.  Sam takes Callen’s dealer to interrogation downstairs while Callen and Deeks handle the other dealer.  Both dealers are being sold the same story – their DNA matches the DNA found on Steve McMillan’s body.  Kensi and Deeks’s dealer let the killers into McMillan’s home.  The dealer’s brother was threatened by a group of North Koreans.  Callen and Deeks share a glance before Ricky breaks in.  He’s ready to kill the dealer but the dealer is like Ricky – had a family member threatened.  Sam knows someone with a background in North Korean spies.  The dealer who was threatened is going to sit with a sketch artist to see if they can figure out who it is.
Kensi brings Jennifer Kim to the boat shed.  She is doing well in the country.  Even tried her hand at gardening until everything turned yellow and died.  Frankie suggests composting – as an Englishman, he knows gardening.  After bringing Jennifer up to speed about Ricky’s daughter Angela and the MAHEM weapon, she is shown the sketch of the man who killed McMillian.  She recognizes Seok Nahng – he’s in the US under one of a dozen alias.  If they want her help, Jennifer needs a deal – she needs to speak to them in private.  In interrogation, Jennfier isn’t looking a deal, she was looking for some privacy.  Angela is likely dead and if she’s not, she is going to wish she was.  Nahng is a skilled torturer.
Since moving the MAHEM weapons system is too risky (and difficult), North Korea likely has engineers in LA learning everything they can about the weapon.  They will take it apart, download all the computer codes.  The spies won’t have to worry about transport the weapon if they know how it is built and how the computer internals work.  The North Koreans don’t one weapon, they want hundreds.
Fatima pops up on the boat shed plasma.  Frankie thinks she’s a virtual image created by the NCIS supercomputer.  Nahng has two U.S passports, one as Michael Lee and one as Michael Park.  Michael Park has a cell phone that is sitting  Chevy Tahoe that is parked outside a warehouse in Pacoima.  The team is on their way.
The team enters the warehouse but it is largely empty.  There are remnants of what is likely one of the weapons system’s computers is on a work table.  The cell phone was a set up to get the team to the warehouse.  Sam realizes the North Koreans knew they were coming.
Tracing Nahng’s other cell phone, Fatima found a call made from Super Fat Willie’s phone.  Only that call was made at the boat shed.  That makes no sense to Fatima so she calls Super Fat’s phone.  It rings in Ricky’s jacket pocket.  Ricky stole the phone from Super Fat during the fight.  Ricky thought he could save his daughter by tipping Nahng off.  He agreed to trade Jennifer Kim for his daughter.  North Korea wants their traitor spy back.  And since Ricky tipped them off to NCIS’s movements, he’s earned some trust.  Frankie thinks it is a bloody, brilliant plan.
Jennifer does not think it is a bloody, brilliant plan.  She’s furious at NCIS but believes they were in the dark.  North Korea wants her dead.  Ricky tries to explain that Angela is a true innocent.  Everything changed the day she was born.  But he doesn’t think NCIS cares about Angela – only the weapons system.  Sam fights back – they have been trying to save his daughter but Ricky made his own deal and one that is outside the normal risk.  Ricky wants to know who is at risk besides Angela. Jennifer answers – she’s at risk.
The team is going to the meet and try to bluff that Jennifer is available to be traded.  If they can’t get Angela, at least they can arrest Nahng.   Jennifer wants to know how involved Ricky was with Angela’s life.  Telling Jennifer he was in prison when Angela was born, Ricky first saw her at seven-months old and was with her every day after he was out of prison until she left for college.  She’s the reason he’s a reformed criminal.
Nahng calls.  He puts a crying Angela on the phone.  When Nahng returns, he give Ricky an airplane hanger for the swap – Angela for Jennifer.  Anyone else shows up, Angela dies.  The swap is at a small airport in San Bernadino.  The idea is to make the exchange and leave the country.  Callen wants the REACT team a mile out.  They will all barely get to the airport in time for the swap.  Sam asks Fatima to call the FBI and have them monitor all aircraft in and out of the airport.  Standing, Jennifer Kim agrees to help.
The airport should look familiar to Jennifer Kim since it looks like the Salt Lake City airport where Granger picked her up.  Also looks like the airport where Spencer Williams sold guns to ATF.  Deeks and Thapa may have been there too in “Frozen Lake”.  Anyway, Jennifer agrees to be cuffed and walks toward the North Koreans.  Feigning a struggle, Ricky thanks Jennifer.  Jennifer tells Ricky he was always there for his daughter, unlike her father.  “You did good, Ricky.”
Four men in a pick-up truck pull up.  One is riding outside in the truck bed.  Kensi has the truck in her sniper’s scope.  Deeks has the FBI waiting – if the plane starts to take off, they’ll put firetrucks on the runway.  Kensi can’t see Angela in the truck.  Nahng leaves the truck, telling Jennifer it is time to go home.  Ricky wants his daughter.  After Nahng has Jennifer, then he’ll tell Ricky where he can pick up his daughter.  Ricky walks, talking Jennifer with him.  Nahng sees that Jennifer is handcuffed as they move away.  Nahng calls them back – Angela is in the bed of the truck.
Deeks is set up with a long gun but thinks the “this is a long shot for me.”   He is focused on one of Nahng’s bodyguards.  Kensi is read to shoot the body guard holding Angela.  That leaves Jennifer with Nahng.   Jennifer starts making her way to Nahng but her handcuffs are now off.  She also has a weapon.  Jennifer is not moving quickly enough for Kensi to fire.  When Nahng threatens to kill Jennifer on the spot, Kensi tells the team to “execute” and the shooting begins.
Kensi takes out the guard with the gun pointed at Angela.  Jennifer does the same to Nahgn.  Deeks misses his target initially, allowing the man to get off two shots – one hitting Ricky, one hitting Jennifer – before Deeks takes him down.
Angela races to her father as Callen and Sam arrive.  Kensi notices one of Nahgn’s injured men was about to shoot Angela so she takes him down.  Ricky had on a bulletproof vest but was shot in the shoulder.  Jennifer’s bulletproof vest to the bullet intended for her.  She’s has the breath knocked out of her but she’s fine.
In a British-style pub, Callen tells Jennifer that the MAHEM weapon was retrieved.  After all she did today, Callen wants Jennifer moved to witness protection.  No more guards, back to living a normal life.  Jennifer explained that while she was working as a spy, she truly believed she was doing the right thing.  After today, saving Angela and bringing her home to her father, she was doing a good thing – it defines who she is.  Callen thinks she’s Granger’s daughter.  The two talk about estranged fathers who aren’t bad men, just aren’t around.
Ricky arrives at the pub – he escaped the hospital.  Angela and Frankie are with him.  The group toasts to tough guys, fathers, daughters, old criminals,  friends and the little gangster in all of them.
What head canon can be formed from here:   The idea of doing a really different episode once a season is interesting, especially when it is this well done.  CSI use to have an episode like this every season – the corpses in autopsy would review their unfortunate demises, the story was told from the point of view of the criminal.  Some worked, some didn’t.  But it was a nice way to mix things up.  The high quality guest stars – Vinny Jones and Steve Valentine were excellent choices
I think this episode was wonderful.  Wouldn’t want it every week but it was a treat.
Episode number:  Episode 246 – nice round numbers.  Episode six of season 11.

When all of these actors came together to work on 2018's A Simple Favor, it was a notable project. The movie was praised for its ensemble effort and continues to gain traction among movie watchers today.

New British comedy TV series from 2020: BBC, Channel 4, Sky, Dave, Amazon, Netflix
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
2020 in British TV comedy brought us Maisie Williams as a kickass survivalist in a pickle, and a new parenting comedy from the hugely talented Simon Blackwell and Chris Addison starring Martin Freeman.
To add to that, there was also a fresh batch of comedians playing exaggerated versions of themselves in self-penned sitcoms, including Katherine Ryan, Mae Martin, Sara Pascoe, Kayleigh Llewellyn, Lucy Beaumont and Jon Richardson.
Here’s the skinny on all those new shows and more. Here’s what arrived in 2019, and here are the new British TV dramas that arrived in 2020.
Breeders
After their excellent 2014 relationship comedy Trying Again, Chris Addison and Simon Blackwell (Veep, The Thick Of It) teamed up on a new series, this time about the trials of parenthood. Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard played parents in this ten-part half-hour comedy, a co-production between Sky in the UK and FX in the US. Watch the first trailer here.
Bumps
Available to stream on BBC iPlayer
A Comedy Playhouse commission for BBC One, Bumps comes from Psychobitches and Tracey Ullman’s Show writer-actor Lucy Montgomery (pictured) and The Life Of Rock With Brian Pern‘s Rhys Thomas. The half-hour pilot is a modern family comedy that centres on Amanda Redman’s character Anita, a divorcee in her sixties with two grown-up kids, who decides to have a third baby with the help of an egg and sperm donor. Playing Anita’s daughter Joanne is Lisa McGrillis (behind the brilliantly dim and tactless but very sweet Kelly on Mum), who discovers she’s pregnant at the same time as her mother.
Code 404
After 2019’s pilot, Sky ordered six episodes of this sci-fi comedy starring Daniel Mays (Line Of Duty, Vera Drake) and Stephen Graham (Boardwalk Empire, The Virtues), written by Mongrels and Not Going Out’s Daniel Peak. It’s a buddy cop drama set in the near future, which sees crime-fighting duo DI John Major (Mays) and DI Roy Carver (Graham) first separated, then reunited thanks to the wonders of modern science. Series two is on its way.
Feel Good
Stand-up Mae Martin co-wrote her autobiographically inspired six-episode series with Joe Hampson, which formerly went by the working title Mae and George and is now called Feel Good. It aired on E4 in the UK and Netflix around the world, and follows Martin’s life as a comedian and recovering addict, and the complications of her new relationship with girlfriend George. Friends’ Lisa Kudrow guest stars. A second series is on the way.
Hitmen
Comedy double act Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins get in on the Killing Eve game as contract killers in this new Sky series. Unlike Villanelle though, these two are decidedly unsmooth operators. Their hits are, according to the press release, “inevitably derailed by incompetence, bickering, and inane antics.” Sherlock’s Amanda Abbington co-stars, along with Francis Barber and Johnny Vegas. Series two is on the way.
In My Skin
Kayleigh Llewellyn’s autobiographically inspired 2018 pilot is now a four-part comedy series for the BBC. It’s the raw but ultimately uplifting story of teenager Bethan’s attempts to conceal from her schoolfriends a chaotic homelife with a mother sectioned in a mental health facility and a dad in the Hell’s Angels. Here’s a clip from the Comedy Slice to whet your appetite.
Intelligence
Available to stream on Sky and NOW TV
Last year saw Rob Lowe in Lincolnshire, now prepare for David Schwimmer in Cheltenham. The Friends actor and director starring in a six-part Sky One comedy as a “maverick NSA agent” working in the UK’s Government Communications Headquarters. He’s joined by series writer Nick Mohammed, in the role of an inept computer analyst tasked with tackling cyber-crime. Series two is on the way.
Kate And Koji
Filmed in Herne Bay, Kent, this six-episode ITV comedy stars Brenda Blethyn as Kate, the owner of a seaside café who strikes up a friendship with asylum seeker Koji, played by Jimmy Akingbola. Those two are joined by The Inbetweeners’ Blake Harrison, playing Kate’s nephew, and Meera Syal as the local GP in a timely modern story with a heart.
King Gary
Available to stream on BBC iPlayer
Murder In Successville and Action Team’s Tom Davis and James De Frond teamed up again to write and direct prime time BBC One sitcom King Gary, which debuted in 2020 and was swiftly recommissioned for a second series. You may have caught the pilot episode, which aired over Christmas 2018, introducing Davis’ character – London builder Gary King, a man-child who loves his family, his suburban community, and really loves a B.B.Q – his parents played by The Fast Show’s Simon Day and Doctor Who’s Camille Coduri, and his unforgettable wife Terri, played by the very funny Laura Checkley.
Meet The Richardsons
Airing on Dave and available to stream weekly on UK TV Play
Married comedians Jon Richardson and Lucy Beaumont starred as heightened versions of themselves in Meet The Richardsons for Dave, written by Beaumont and Car Share’s Tim Reid. Inspired by Beaumont’s appearances on Richardsons’ Ultimate Worrier series for Dave, the series comically documents the couple’s parenting and relationship woes.
Mister Winner
Following a successful Comedy Playhouse pilot, Spencer Jones (Upstart Crow) returned as the hapless Leslie Winner for a six-episode series on BBC One. Joining Jones will be Shaun Williamson and Lucy Pearman, in a loveable comedy about “an eternally optimistic klutz with his heart in the right place”. If you’ve yet to see Jones’ excellent BBC iPlayer short series The Mind Of Herbert Clunkerdunk, get involved without delay.
My Left Nut
Available to stream on BBC iPlayer
Coming to BBC Three is an autobiographically inspired three-part comedy-drama from Irish writers Michael Patrick and Oisin Kearney, adapted from their acclaimed stage play. Starring Sinead Keenan (Little Boy Blue, Being Human) with newcomer Nathan Quinn-O’Rawe, it’s the story of a Belfast teenager who discovers a lump on his testicle but finds himself unable to tell those around him. A relatable, entertaining teen comedy with an important healthcare message.
Out of Her Mind
An established name on screen and the live circuit, comedian Sara Pascoe is the latest comic to write and star in her own sitcom (joining the ranks of Roisin Conaty, Aisling Bea, Josh Widdicombe and more). Her as-yet untitled series is being produced for BBC Two by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s production company, Stolen Picture. It’s about “family, relationships and biology,” according to the press release, and will combine eccentric characters with surreal interludes and factual segments. Read about the best Netflix stand-up specials here.
Sandylands
Following on from 2019’s Isle of Wight-set family comedy The Cockfields, Gold has commissioned a second three-part original sitcom. This one’s also set on the UK coast, and tells the story of a successful Londoner who returns to her home town and reconnects with old friends and old crushes when her local businessman father disappears at sea. Sanjeev Bhaskar, David Walliams, Sophie Thompson, Hugh Bonneville and Natalie Dew star.
Semi-Detached
The pilot episode for comedy Semi-Detached, about a hapless fortysomething aired in January 2019, followed by a full series. It was written by actors David Crow and Oliver Maltman and boasted a strong comedy cast including Lee Mack, Ellie White, Samantha Spiro, Clive Russell and Patrick Baladi. The twist with this one is that all the action unfurls in real time.
The Duchess
In addition to her Netflix stand-up specials, comedian Katherine Ryan made a six-part autobiographical comedy for the streaming service. Though a familiar face on screen, this marks the first scripted series Ryan has written and executive-produced. In it, she plays “a fashionable disruptive single mother living in London”, inspired by Ryan’s own experience raising her daughter in the capital after moving here from her native Canada.
The First Team
Iain Morris and Damon Beesley, aka The Inbetweeners creators, have written a six-part half-hour sitcom for BBC Two. Formerly under the working title of Afternoons, it’s now called The First Team and details the off-pitch adventures of three Premier League footballers playing for a fictional side, “three young men who just happen to have a very stressful job in the public eye,” according to the writers. The cast includes Arrested Development‘s Will Arnett as the team’s eccentric American chairman, alongside Theo Barklam Biggs, Shaquille Ali-Yebuah, Jack McMullen, Jake Short and Chris Geere.
The Kemps: All True
Remember how much everybody loved that Bros doc? Well now BBC Four comedy is planning to capture that same lightning in a bottle with mockumentary The Kemps: All True, following the travails of another pair of pop star brothers in Spandau Ballet’s Gary and Martin Kemp. The one-off comedy from Brian Pern‘s Rhys Thomas will track the brothers as they record a new studio album. Read more about it here at the BBC.
The Trouble With Maggie Cole
Stream episodes weekly on ITV Hub
Commissioned in March 2019 by ITV under the working title Glass Houses is a six-part hour-long comedy series starring Dawn French, Mark Heap, Julie Hesmondhalgh, Vicki Pepperdine and more. It’s about the aftermath of a loose-lipped radio interview with French’s Maggie, the village gossip who spills her neighbours’ secrets on air. It comes written by Shameless and Benidorm’s Mark Brotherhood and aired on ITV1 in March.
Truth Seekers
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s latest collaboration is a comedy horror series for Amazon Prime Video. Filming began in September 2019 on Truth Seekers, which follows a group of paranormal investigator hobbyists who film their ghost sighting escapades for the online community, and stumble into some very strange business that could end life as we know it. There’s a great comedy cast including Pegg and Frost, including Susan Wokoma, Julian Barratt, Samson Kayo, Morgana Robinson, Kate Nash, Kevin Eldon and Malcolm McDowell.
Two Weeks To Live
Written by Cheat’s Gaby Hull, this six-episode Sky comedy is the story of misfit Kim, a young girl raised to survive in the wilderness, who re-enters society on a secret mission to honour her dead father’s memory. Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams plays Kim, who becomes entangled in a prank-gone-wrong plot involving gangsters, a bag of cash and the police. With Kim’s survival skills, don’t expect her to come quietly…

In 2019, he was inducted into the Royal Society of the Arts with the Patron being Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Career
Harold O'Neal was born in Arusha, Tanzania, and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. His great-grandfather, Ollie Harold Pennington, was a jazz pianist and composer for silent film in Kansas City, where his grandmother walked to school with Charlie Parker. Harold began playing the piano by ear at age 4 on his father's miniature keyboard. He found his earliest inspirations in the music of Tom and Jerry, Looney Tunes, and Disney. While growing up, his family had a tradition of playing games together to find the distinct rhythms of songs. Having spent much of his youth living in the projects (Public Housing) and surviving near-death experiences, he credits music with saving his life.
O'Neal attended the Paseo Academy Of Fine And Performing Arts, with classmates Logan Richardson, Lil' Ronnie, and Brian Kennedy, where he began his jazz piano studies while being mentored by Ahmad Alaadeen. He studied classical piano and composition with Margie Cameron-Jarrett, whose musical lineage can be traced back to Franz Liszt. He began working with musical luminaries from a young age — touring the world with Bobby Watson when he was 19 after studying composition at the Berklee College Of Music. He then went on to study at the Manhattan School of Music. It was there where Harold met the great American jazz pianist and composer, Andrew Hill, with whom he soon became the apprentice of. Mr. Hill was an apprentice of prolific composer Paul Hindemith. Following Andrew Hill's advice, O'Neal left the Manhattan School of Music to replace pianist Jason Moran in the influential band, the Greg Osby 4, making his major-label debut recording for Blue Note Records at the age of 21. In 2004, O'Neal premiered a jazz quartet featuring Greg Osby, Jeff "Tain" Watts, and Matt Brewer.
In the following years, O'Neal released a number of albums including "Charlie's Suite" (2006), which was a compilation of his family's legacy, "Whirling Mantis" (2010) with a jazz quartet and a solo piano album "Marvelous Fantasy" (2011) on Smalls Records. He then partnered with Ski Beats and Damon Dash, after being signed to Universal Music Group as a songwriter and producer, to release the albums 24 Hour Karate School 2 (2011), Twilight (2012) and Cam'Ron And Vado's Blu Tops (2012). In 2012, O'Neal formed a partnership with producers Lil Ronnie and Jerry Wonda working with many Pop and R&B artists (Miguel, Akon, Melissa Ethridge, Raphael Saadiq, French Montana). In 2013, he released the album "Man On The Street" featuring a jazz quartet as well as solo piano for Universal. O'Neal worked as an additional composer on the 2015 Disney film Tomorrowland with Anthony Giacchino, which starred George Clooney and Britt Robertson. The film was directed by Brad Bird with the bulk of the film-score being composed by Michael Giacchino. His solo piano album "Piano Cinema" was released in May 2018, with "Sam and Sam" serving as the lead single. Following the album release, O'Neal completed a spring tour across the U.S. with The Blk Shp with Pixar as a partner.

The Inbetweeners Movie
Tumblr media
#354
The Inbetweeners Movie was released in 2011 and was directed by Ben Palmer, it is the follow on from the UK TV comedy series The Inbetweeners and stars James Buckley, Simon Bird, Joe Thomas and Blake Harrison.
The film focuses on four troubled 18 year olds who travel to Malia on holiday, each for their own intentions but mostly to get drunk and hook up with girls.
The inbetweeners was a huge show in the UK that was replicated in the US pretty poorly, but this movie was huge in the summer of 2011 and was one of the biggest box office hits for a UK comedy ever.
And it is in fact the best TV to Movie comedy i have ever seen on the big screen, not only are the characters loveable just like the TV show it follows but the story is great and the jokes land every single time.
It’s easy to throw this into the bag of big screen adaptations such as Kevin & Perry Go Large and Guest House Paradiso, but they both feel like they’ve aged poorly and are generally not as funny as this movie.
I love the performances of the main characters, there is so much chemistry because of the real life friendships and you forget that they are playing fictional characters most of the time.
There is never a dull moment and the cinematography is surprisingly stepped up, this doesn’t feel like a TV movie at all which is a surprising feat for a movie like this.
The film’s extra characters that pop up are even funnier, Richard, a crazed teenager that occasionally pops up in the film is absolutely hilarious.
The movie leaves you wanting more, and i could watch this over and over, in fact i saw this movie at the cinema 4 times that summer alongside Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes.
★★★★★ I cannot fault this movie, its hilarious from start to finish and a great escapism comedy movie that reminds you how good the TV series is too.

1974 - Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan started a four week run at No.1 on the US album chart with Planet Waves, his first US No.1. The album was originally set to be titled Ceremonies Of The Horsemen, a reference to the song 'Love Minus Zero / No Limit', from the 1965 album 'Bringing It All Back Home'. When Dylan decided to change the title at the last minute, the release was delayed for two weeks.
1974 - Emerson Lake and Palmer
During a tour of America the members of Emerson, Lake & Palmer were arrested in Salt Lake City after swimming naked in the hotel pool. They were each fined $75 (£44).

1975 - Cher

1985 - Bruce Springsteen
Bruce Springsteen went to No.1 on the UK album chart with 'Born In The USA', his first UK No.1 album. The singers seventh studio album, was the best-selling album of 1985 in the United States (and also Springsteen's most successful album ever). The album produced a record-tying string of seven Top 10 singles.
1991 - The Simpsons
The Simpsons were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Do The Bartman'. The song was written by Michael Jackson and Bryan Lorenand, The Simpsons became the first cartoon characters to make No.1 since the Archies hit 'Sugar Sugar' in 1969. Jackson was a massive fan of The Simpsons and had called the producers one night offering to write Bart a number one single and do a guest spot on the show.
2004 - Doris Troy
US singer Doris Troy died. She had been a session singer with Dionne Warwick, sang on Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon and released an album on The Beatles Apple label. She had also had a 1964 UK No.37 single with 'Whatcha Gonna Do About It' and a 1963 US No. 10 hit 'Just One Look'. BOB HOPE’S WORLD OF COMEDY
October 30, 1976
Tumblr media
Produced and Directed by Jack Haley Jr.
Written by: Charles Lee with Gig Henry, Jeffrey Barron, Katherine Green, and Jack Haley Jr.
Tumblr media
Bob Hope (Himself, Host) was born Lesley Townes Hope in England in 1903. During his extensive career in virtually all forms of media he received five honorary Academy Awards. In 1945 Desi Arnaz was the orchestra leader on Bob Hope’s radio show. Ball and Hope did four films together. He appeared as himself on the season 6 opener of “I Love Lucy.” He did a brief cameo in a 1964 episode of “The Lucy Show.”  When Lucille Ball moved to NBC in 1980, Hope appeared on her welcome special. He died in 2003 at age 100.
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball (Herself) was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She began her screen career in 1933 and was known in Hollywood as ‘Queen of the B’s’ due to her many appearances in ‘B’ movies. With Richard Denning, she starred in a radio program titled “My Favorite Husband” which eventually led to the creation of “I Love Lucy,” a television situation comedy in which she co-starred with her real-life husband, Latin bandleader Desi Arnaz. The program was phenomenally successful, allowing the couple to purchase what was once RKO Studios, re-naming it Desilu. When the show ended in 1960 (in an hour-long format known as “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”) so did Lucy and Desi’s marriage. In 1962, hoping to keep Desilu financially solvent, Lucy returned to the sitcom format with “The Lucy Show,” which lasted six seasons. She followed that with a similar sitcom “Here’s Lucy” co-starring with her real-life children, Lucie and Desi Jr., as well as Gale Gordon, who had joined the cast of “The Lucy Show” during season two. Before her death in April 1989, Lucy made one more attempt at a sitcom with “Life With Lucy,” also with Gordon, which was not a success and was canceled after just 13 episodes.
Neil Simon (Himself) is a playwright and screenwriter responsible for more than 30 plays, most of which were seen on Broadway and adapted into films.  At the time, one of his most enduring plays The Odd Couple was being done on television. In 1983 became the only living playwright to have a New York theatre named in his honor. In 1960, when it was still called the Alvin Theatre, Lucille Ball appeared there in the musical Wildcat.
Don Rickles (Himself) worked as a stand-up comic in nightclubs for nearly 20 years before making his film debut in 1958. Rickles was known as an insult comic and became a staple of Hollywood roasts. In “Lucy the Fight Manager” (TLS S5;E20) he made his first and last acting appearance with Lucille Ball, but would be seen with her on variety shows and specials through 1988. Rickles was the voice of Mr. Potato Head in the animated Toy Story franchise. He died in April 2017 at age 90.
Norman Lear (Himself) is a television writer and producer responsible for such hits as “All in the Family,” “Maude,” “One Day at a Time,” “The Jeffersons,” and many others. He received three Emmy Awards for his work on “All in the Family.”
Caroll Spinney (Big Bird) started playing Big Bird on “Sesame Street” in 1969. In 2000, Big Bird was named a Living Legend by the United States Library of Congress. Created by Jim Henson, Big Bird is one of two Muppets to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Spinney has been honored with four Daytime Emmy Awards for his portrayals on the series and two Grammy Awards for his related recordings. Two recordings of Spinney's voice have earned Gold Record status.
Tumblr media
As with many Bob Hope specials, the show is sponsored by Texaco.
Bob Hope's opening monologue talks mainly about the Presidential Election, which would take place in two weeks. Incumbent president Gerald Ford ran against Jimmy Carter. He also touches on the World Series, the Swine Flu epidemic, Zsa Zsa Gabor's multiple marriages, and the CB radio craze.
Tumblr media
Bob's first guest is Big Bird from “Sesame Street” (Caroll Spinney). Big Bird does an ad-lib impersonation of Jack Benny that makes Hope laugh. This kicks off a montage of clips about animals.

Tumblr media
Lucy reminisces with Bob, which leads to a black and white clip of a sketch from “The Bob Hope Show” (September 24, 1962). In it, Lucy plays a District Attorney and Bob a gangster named Bugsy Hope.
Tumblr media
Back on stage, Bob asks Lucy the secret to her show's endearing success. She says that it has to do with the realatable domestic situations created by the writers. Bob add that the physical comedy gives her comedy world-wide appeal. Lucy says that as of last count her shows were seen in 79 countries. Lucy says she's heard herself dubbed in Japanese, and that in South America it is HER who as the accent. Asked about being a legend, Lucy says it is “kind of like an obituary” but she's very grateful.

Heidi Klum hit with knife, V. Unbeatable returns
CLOSE
Tumblr media
“America’s Got Talent: The Champions” is back, and this time, judge Howie Mandel finally got to put his Golden Buzzer rights to use.
During last week’s episode, Mandel was supposed to have exclusive use of the buzzer, which gives a judge the power to automatically send an act to the finals. Before he could hit it, however, fellow judge Simon Cowell swooped in to steal it for “Star Wars”-inspired dance act Boogie Storm.
So on Monday’s episode, the Golden Buzzer power was back in Mandel’s hands, and this time the former “Deal or No Deal” host used it on a group of performers he decided deserved a second chance.
V. Unbeatable, a dance crew from Mumbai, India, returned to the show after finishing in fourth place on Season 14 of “AGT” last year, where guest judge Dwyane Wade gave them their first Golden Buzzer.
“Our time on ‘America’s Got Talent’ was like a dream come true, because we come from so much struggle,” said one member of the team, adding that most of the people in the dance crew come from Mumbai’s slums.
He continued that a second chance at the “AGT” title is an “opportunity to make a better life for ourselves and for our families.”

And V. Unbeatable lived up to their name.
Dancing to an up-tempo, contemporary tune, the dancers held nothing back, flinging members into the air and performing several flips. In one stunt, a smaller dancer was catapulted through a moving rectangular structure, and landed in time with the music.
All four judges were blown away.
“I can see on your faces just how much this all means to all of you,” said judge Alesha Dixon. “Thank you so much for bringing such a beautiful, positive energy to ‘AGT: Champions.’ That was absolutely outstanding.”
‘AGT’: Acrobat group V. Unbeatable wows guest judge Dwyane Wade, wins Golden Buzzer
Judge Heidi Klum noted the act had “so much adrenaline,” while Cowell called it “one of the best acts we’ve seen in ‘Champions’ this year.”
“We needed you tonight, trust me,” he added.
Mandel, however, seemed most impressed.
“I love you, and I love what you do, and I love what it means to you,” he said. “When you didn’t win ‘AGT,’ the disappointment you had, we felt like a knife going into our hearts.

‘AGT: The Champions’: Simon Cowell steals Howie Mandel’s Golden Buzzer, dangerous act stopped
“But disappointment only lasts a moment,” he continued, rising out of his chair and walking toward the Golden Buzzer at the center of the judges’ table. “This is a moment. This is the moment you have been waiting for. Just sit there and think about this moment.”
Mandel then sat on the Golden Buzzer, triggering the confetti cannons and securing the the group’s place in the finals.
While V. Unbeatable brought the energy, another act brought the terror, especially for Klum.
The silent, spooky illusionist Miki Dark, who finished as a semifinalist on Season 10 of “Holland’s Got Talent,” returned for a trick that gave Halloween costume queen Klum a fright.

Appearing behind the judges’ table, the performer, clad in a dark robe and black-and-white face paint, brought Klum onto the stage and then pointed to host Terry Crews to stand behind her.
Communicating only through hand gestures, the silent Dark instructed Crews to hold a basket of red papers over Klum. He then took out a photo of Cowell’s face, ripped off the picture’s eye, put it in a small red envelope and kissed it with his black lipstick. (Yes, you read that correctly – and it only gets weirder from here.)
Dark then dropped the envelope into the basket and hung a black square onto Klum. On the count of three, Crews dropped the red papers in front of the judge while Dark hurled a knife at her chest.
Klum let out a loud, high scream as the knife struck the sturdy square, attaching to a single piece of red.

Dark then removed the piece to reveal it as the envelope containing the ripped-off piece of Cowell’s eye.
The trick left Klum shaken, literally.
“I can’t stop shaking,” she said back in her judging seat. “Thank you so much for not killing me.”
“I loved everything about it from start to finish,” added Dixon. “You created the best atmosphere. It wasn’t too scary.”
“What?” Klum interrupted.
“Well, for you it was scary,” Dixon replied.

Unfortunately for Dark, his thrilling stunt didn’t earn him a spot in the semifinals, and he was eliminated, along with magician Ben Hart, multimedia dance crew Freckled Sky, beat-boxing harmonica player Moses Concas, singer Michael Grimm and dance crew Quick Style.
Advancing to the next round are dance partners Duo Destiny, 12-year-old violinist Tyler Butler Figueroa and 11-year-old dog trainer Alexa Lauenburger.

RE: Murder She Wrote. I had the same experience with the Magnum P.I., Dukes of Hazzard, Knight Rider, Simon & Simon and A-Team box sets. It's amazing how many actors pop up in them that were either huge stars before the 80s in movies or people who became hugely famous afterwards.
The absolute king of the surprising guest star series would have to be Gunsmoke, a Western that was only recently overtaken as the longest-running drama series on television.
You turn it on, and you might see...hey, Leonard Nimoy as an Indian:

And...whoa, is that a young Harrison Ford?
