I wanted to start off by thanking all of you for this most wonderful crustacean filled story! Having grown up in Maryland (a little US state so defined by its relationship to a giant estuary that the state college gives new students a crab mallet and some Old Bay seasoning), I loved seeing crustaceans get the proper reverence (and dread) they deserve.

My question is in regards to Val and The Last Word (who I love, love, love!!):

In the story, it seems to be implied that The Last Word is not only a newly created god, but also may be mixed up with Val in a way unusual for most god-saint cases (or maybe I’m misreading it, and the only weird one here is Val)

In that case, when Val died, did The Last Word also die with them? Or is it still out there, limping along without any worshippers? Considering its need for an audience to warp realities, would it even be possible for it to influence the world now that Val isn’t around to speak for it anymore?

Part of me thinks that if it survived it might end up a stray god in a similar way to The Watcher In The Wings, laying dormant until some hapless soul manages to draw its prayer marks (would there even be any records for how to summon this highly illegal and secret god?) I feel like the only living person who might be directly aware of it would be Chuck Harm (and now I’m imagining Chuck living his best life with the dogs while The Last Word futilely tries to tempt him into going back to newscasting to spread the word, like a puppy begging for human food)

TLDR, did our beloved walking war-crime take her beloathed god down with her?

Thank you for listening! I adore your thoughts on the Last Word and your story about the Maryland crab mallets is bizarre and horrible in all the best ways.

Personally, I don't see the Last Word as necessarily having an existence outside of Val (and as you mention, we see throughout the season that increasingly Val can lie without calling upon it at all). Which could be either:

1) because Val is right and she has lied her way into being a walking, talking god of lies

2) because a god of lies is necessarily insubstantial and evasive

3) because the Last Word does exist in some form, but it has no need for attention or communication as it's being worshipped far more meaningfully and effectively by characters like Carson and Chuck without even using its name. In this reading, Val is effectively a god-hacker tapping into its usage without having its attention.

Having a teenager was rough. Teenagers experience so much—the highs and the lows—and the lows can get very, very low sometimes. Everything feels like a burden, even the smallest of inconveniences, which we only realize are small when we look at them in the rearview.

Charlotte, their daughter, had just come home. y/n had come home from work not too much earlier. 

“Hey, how was your day?” she asked her daughter with a soft smile, “did they gave you that biology test you said ‘it went so bad’,” she added, knowing that despite her thoughts she would end up with an outstanding grade.

“Yeah, an A,” Charlotte responded, through her tone giving away she was not in the mood.

The kitchen was quiet except for the gentle hum of the refrigerator and the occasional clatter of dishes as she tidied up. Charlotte sat at the kitchen table, poking at a bowl of cereal with her spoon, her expression distant.

She could sense something was off—Charlotte wasn’t her usual chatty self. Even her response about the biology test, which normally would’ve been delivered with pride or an exaggerated tale of woe, had been flat.

“An A, huh?” she said, trying to keep her tone light as she leaned against the counter. “I knew you’d ace it. You always do, even when you swear it’s the end of the world.”

Charlotte shrugged, her eyes fixed on her cereal. “Yeah, I guess.”

Her mother frowned slightly, setting the dish towel down and walking over to the table. She sat across from Charlotte, folding her hands on the table. “What’s going on, sweetheart? You’ve been extremely quiet”

“Nothing,” Charlotte replied too quickly, her voice tinged with irritation.

She tilted her head, her eyes soft with concern. “Charlotte…”

Her daughter sighed, her shoulders slumping as she finally set the spoon down. “It’s just… I’m tired, okay? School was long, and people were annoying, and…” She trailed off, her voice catching slightly.

“...And?”

Charlotte hesitated, her fingers fidgeting with the edge of her sleeve. “It’s stupid.”

“Nothing’s stupid if it’s bothering you,” her mom said gently, reaching across the table to rest a hand on Charlotte’s. “Talk to me, love.”

Charlotte looked down, her eyes welling up despite her best efforts to keep it together. “Liam… broke up with me,” she finally admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.

Her heart clenched as she watched her daughter fight back tears. “Oh, sweetheart,” she said, getting up to move around the table and sit beside her. She wrapped her arms around Charlotte, who did not resist the hug but leaned into her instead.

“It’s so dumb,” Charlotte said, her voice muffled against her shoulder. “I don’t even know why I’m crying. It’s not like we were together that long, but… it just hurts.”

“It’s not dumb,” her mom reassured her, rubbing her back soothingly. “It hurts because it mattered to you. And it’s okay to feel that way.”

Charlotte sniffled, pulling back slightly. “I just don’t get it. He said I was ‘too much’ or something. Like, what does that even mean?”

Her mom’s brow furrowed. “It means he didn’t know how lucky he was to have you,” she said firmly. “And that’s his loss, not yours.”

Charlotte let out a watery laugh, wiping her eyes. “You’re just saying that because you’re my mom.”

“I’m saying it because it’s true,” she countered, cupping Charlotte’s face gently. “You’re smart, kind, and funny, and anyone who doesn’t see that doesn’t deserve you. Liam clearly wasn’t ready for someone as amazing as you.”

Charlotte smiled faintly, her tears starting to slow. “Thanks, Mom.”

“Always, love,” she said, pulling her into another hug. “Breakups suck, I know, but as far as I’m concerned no one has died from one,” she added, her tone lighter, trying to make her chuckle.

“I could be the first case,” her daughter chuckled slightly, still leaning into the embrace.

“Nope, not happening with me around,” she said softly, “I promise, it will pass, now it hurts, but it will pass, it always does, okay?”

Charlotte nodded, her face still slightly teary. 

“And while it does pass,” her mom started, “do you want to do something, maybe go shopping, you know to speed up the process,” she suggested with a light grin.

Charlotte wiped her eyes, her lips curving into a faint smile. “Yeah, okay. Shopping sounds nice,” she said softly.

Her mom grinned, a spark of relief lighting up her expression. “Perfect..”

Charlotte chuckled lightly, the sound still a bit shaky but genuine. “You’re really just looking for an excuse to go shopping, aren’t you?”

“Busted,” her mom teased, nudging her gently. “But seriously, a little retail therapy never hurt anyone. Go get ready, and I’ll grab my purse.”

“Okay,” Charlotte said, standing up from the table. The weight in her chest felt a bit lighter now, even if the ache of the breakup still lingered.

As Charlotte headed upstairs to change, her mom lingered in the kitchen, pulling out her phone to text Toto.

Taking Charlotte out for a little mother-daughter shopping trip. She had a rough day. Will fill you in later.

Moments later, Toto replied: Got it. Let me know if you need me to join. Give her a hug from me.

Smiling at his message, she slipped her phone into her bag and turned toward the stairs. “Ready when you are, Charlotte!” she called out.

Charlotte appeared a few minutes later, her eyes still slightly puffy but her expression more relaxed. “Let’s go.”

With a reassuring smile, her mom wrapped an arm around her shoulders as they headed to the car. “This is going to be fun, you’ll see.”

Charlotte leaned into her slightly, grateful for the comfort. “Thanks, Mom. For everything.”

“Always, sweetheart,” she said warmly, starting the Mercedes.

Later, almost night, the car pulled into the driveway late in the evening, the headlights casting long shadows against the house. Charlotte and her mom stepped out, the trunk bursting with shopping bags from every upscale store they had visited. Charlotte’s laughter rang through the quiet evening as she struggled to carry her share of the bags.

“Okay, okay, I think I went a little overboard,” her mom admitted with a laugh, balancing a few bags on her arms.

“You think?” Charlotte teased, a playful smile lighting up her face. She looked more like herself again, her earlier heartbreak now a distant hum rather than a sharp pang.

She smiled fondly as she glimpsed that very genuine smile on her daughter’s face. The evening went really well, not only due to the shopping, which contributed greatly, but the company.

They juggled the bags to the door, and as soon as it opened, they were greeted by the warm glow of the foyer lights. The familiar scent of home wrapped around them like a comforting hug.

Toto appeared at the top of the staircase, dressed casually in a button-down and slacks. He descended quickly, his tall frame moving gracefully. “Late night, I see,” he remarked, his voice carrying a mix of curiosity and amusement. His eyes flicked to the mountain of bags they were unloading onto the floor. “Did you leave anything in the stores?”

“Not much,” Charlotte quipped, a grin breaking across her face.

Toto smiled, clearly relieved to see her looking happier. He stepped forward and wrapped an arm around her shoulders, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her head. “You seem better,” he said softly.

“She’s feeling much better,” her mom confirmed, setting her bags down and stretching her arms. “And we might have single-handedly boosted the local economy tonight.”

Charlotte laughed. “It helped, though. I needed this.”

Toto crouched slightly, looking Charlotte in the eye. “Good. That’s all that matters. You’ll get through this, you know.”

Charlotte nodded, her smile soft but genuine. “Thanks, Dad.”

“Always,” he said warmly before standing and turning to his wife. “And you—thank you for taking care of her.”

“Of course,” she replied with a knowing smile. “Now, I’m going to make some tea. Charlotte, why don’t you start figuring out where all these bags are going to fit in your room?”

Charlotte rolled her eyes good-naturedly. “Right. I’ll just call an architect and plan an extension.”

As she gathered her bags and headed upstairs, Toto slipped an arm around his wife’s waist, pulling her close. “You really are amazing, you know that?”

She tilted her head, giving him a teasing smile. “I hope you remind me of that every so often.”

He chuckled, pressing a kiss to her temple. “Every chance I get.”

From upstairs, they heard Charlotte call out, “Mom, where did you put that bag from Dior?!”

She groaned, laughing. “Coming!”

Toto released her with a smile, watching her head upstairs to join Charlotte.

What do you think of jkr as a writer? I for one has always felt like she didn’t treat her female characters well. It felt strange, being critical of her when she was god queen of the earth, and also being 10

I think most of the problems in her books can be chalked up to genre hopping. Books 1-3 are perfectly good and serviceable children's books — great children's books, even! They have compelling, relatable characters and juicy mystery plots. They have problems, sure, but for the first three books someone's ever written — especially someone with little or no background in creative writing — they're really fucking good. So: there's her flowers.

The last four books pivot sharply into much more emotionally complicated and sociopolitically loaded territory, because they're describing a war. And it's hard to write children's books about war. I would venture you can't really do it, at least without dramatically misrepresenting what war is! And so Rowling makes the executive decision somewhere during the writing of Book 4 that she's not going to flinch away from that, she's going to go for dramatic realism, and she kills Cedric Diggory to let us know. People had died in Harry Potter before, of course — Quirrell gets sent to the fucking shadow realm, for example. But children haven't. (It also gives parents who are reading these books with their children a warning shot: shit is about to get significantly more real, think twice before you buy the next one of these for your 10-year-old.) After that, Rowling starts leaning much more into dramatic realism, and the fast-paced mystery-novel plotting of the first few books is replaced by a slow, simmering political conflict that unfurls over the course of about a million words.

The problem — besides the fact that she's picking one of the hardest things to write about, like, in all of literature, war is really insanely complicated and emotionally intense and hard to portray well — is that she's now trying to use characters, plot points, and technologies she developed for a children's series to enact a sprawling war drama among teenagers and adults. So Hermione, who was a reasonably precocious snobby eleven-year-old, becomes this sort of encyclopedic all-knowing savant of the wizarding world, who somehow remains functional and mostly even-headed despite her identity being the chief target of a prolifically murderous terrorist group. Draco Malfoy, a schoolyard bully whose primary tools included 1. namecalling and 2. telling teacher, JOINS said terrorist group (and admittedly does react reasonably, i.e., has a total crashout and takes to sobbing in a girls' bathroom whenever he gets a free minute). Dumbledore, who starts out as "whimsical friendly winky-wink trustworthy grandfather type", ends up being Magical Winston Churchill in a violent game of spycraft and espionage, eventually revealing he's only been keeping Harry at all these seven years because he wants to KILL him! And like, maybe really good technical writing could smooth out these transitions and make the first-order dramatic choices seem more natural, but Rowling is like, a Fine Writer, technically speaking. meaning she's reasonably consistent in characterization, her plotting is well-paced and believable, she has a clear authorial voice, and her prose is readable. personally, that's not enough to get me to buy into some of the changes that happen in the later books, and because she stuffs these things so full with new elements every installment, a lot of stuff ends up getting glossed over.

And like, I still love the books. I think they're wonderful, and they taught me how to read. but i can say that and also say that Rowling probably did herself a disservice by trying to write four giant war novels as sequels to her first three mystery children's books.

dick is a trombonist- he was pretty bad at when he first started out because his arms were too short to fully extend the slide lmfao,,,,,, it was never really one of his passions but he got quite good and still enjoys playing now and then

jason played trumpet. enough said (but seriously there's no other option- although i think he had a tendency to rage quit his practice sessions, and probably dropped out of band after grade 10. HOWEVER I could totally see him playing guitar as well and maybe joining jazz?)

tim is probably a flautist and made his brothers scare off anyone who bullied him for it,,,,,, maybe he would also learn to beatbox with it or smth cool like that. i think he's actually REALLY good and has even made it to top chairs district/state honor bands before. (not exactly sure how competitive njmea is though someone help me out pls)

damian is......okay damian might be the outlier and end up taking orchestra. it's okay though they forgive him for it. although i think it would be really funny if he tried clarinet, literally couldn't make a single sound, and immediately demanded that Bruce switch him over after one (1) day of trying

cass is a double threat i think she plays keyboard in jazz band (to an insane level) but she also plays flute. however she has a grudge against concert band (particularly marches) and (to the annoyance of her band director) prefers to improvise her parts

duke plays sax- mainly alto, but his favorite is bari. he wishes there were more cooler bari parts in traditional concert band rep (he's tired of upbeats, okay?!). surprisingly he's not in jazz with cass at school (couldn't fit it into his schedule), but he does play in a jazz-contemporary band outside of school.

steph is a casual euphonium player- she did her first year of band to fulfill the requirement for one year of a music elective, and only stayed in it because she knew a lot of people in the class. she also likes bass clarinet, but is NOT a fan of treble clef, so she's slowly learning it on the side.

(bonus: bruce was raised to play classical piano, but quit after his parents died. his kids are slowly helping him find his love for music again, and recently alfred heard him take 'clair de lune' (you KNOW he still knows it by heart) back out again.)

notice I didn't put anyone on clarinet...i think i have very high standards for clarinet player vibes, and none of them really stood out to me.
