Custom Hualian dolls
𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ𐀔
I started this project in February 2022. I originally made a Puqi Shrine diorama out of an old cardboard box. I still have it and I'll post it soon after I make some minor alterations. I just really wanted to share these 2 since I spent so much effort on them.
Back then, I purchased 2 Obitsu 11cm dolls. I bought them on Aliexpress but judging by the packaging and the fact they were around $15 each I'm pretty sure they're legit.
In this blog I'll talk a bit about the process for those unfamiliar with doll customizing and everyone else who is interested in the process. I'm a doll collector but my customizing skills are very rudimentary and mostly rely on winging it and hoping for the best.
And my motto during this process was "nobody's gonna see the back."
I made the prototype clothes back in 2022 and the stitching was ass. And it took me until last week to gather enough courage to start working on the wigs. I originally purchased very cheap doll hair but it refused to cooperate and I decided to use felt instead.

His clothes were already basically done when I started over. I added the red ribbon details, added the flower nail charm, the red string and I made the wig, of course.
These outfits are by no means historically or cannonically accurate. I had to modify them to accommodate the scale and my subpar sewing skills. I've gotten much better at sewing since then so don't look at those shoulder seams...
And I still don't know what's going on with the back of his red robes. I think I ran out of fabric :-|
The braid is made using a string of black yarn. The vambraces are actually fake adjustable ear cuffs.
I'll show the wig making process more in Xie Lian's section since Hua Cheng's was easier to make. I just slapped a bunch of felt pieces on the wigcap with glue and voilà!
And E'Ming was made using pencils and gel polish on a piece of cardboard and Xie Lian's butterfly was made with the help of a nail sticker and magnetic cat eye polish. In the finished photo you can see a red gem sticker on E'Ming's eye. I don't know how I feel about it. Do your prefer the design without it? I can easily take it off.

Xie Lian's outfit and hair was a bit of a challenge but it was fun. I was inspired by several designs and decided to just wing it and make my own outfit instead of recreating an existing one in its entirety.
Also, as you can tell, these dolls have many articulation points that allow for so much posability. I sewed the clothes onto them to keep it in place so they have limited range of movement, especially Hua Cheng, but I'm fine with it. They can still pose nicely.
Instead of making inner and outer robes I decided to make one pair of robes and the second pair that's folded over the shoulders stops at the waist and is hidden by the belt/sash(?) idk English forgive me.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ˚。𔓘
𔓘。˚ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
I tried to make the "main robes" fold over at the waist but I misplaced the rest of that white fabric 2 years ago so I just extended the edges on 3 sides with the sheer fabric from an old curtain and hoped for the best.
Oh, and the shoes are also from Aliexpress. I try not to purchase often from them but I could not find any alternatives...
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ˚。𔓘
𔓘。˚ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
The wig making process was... Interesting. I won't show the entire wigcap by itself to spare your eyes so here's balding Xie Lian lol.
The bun was made by rolling felt into a little roll. I then stuck two bigger felt circles onto one side and glued the edges after I cut the outer edges like you would cut a pizza. Does this make sense? Probably not.
Basically, make a rose type thing.
And if you're wondering, the wigs are removable and kind of posable as well.
𓍯𓂃𓏧♡
And that's basically it <3
I wanted to include better quality pics but it won't allow me to post more than 10 at once so I had to stuff them into collages.
Forgot to mute the video so if you hear my cat wreaking havoc in the background no you didn't.
─────────────୨ৎ─────────────
─────────────୨ৎ─────────────
I may or may not be working on another project centered around Beefleaf...
When I was a kid, I couldn't afford good quality dolls so I played with small doll-like keychains that had knitted dresses, arms and legs made of string, heads made of painted wooden beads and little beanies on their heads.
I have similar beads laying around so I plan to make similar keychains that look like fem Beefleaf.
Of course, I gotta finish that damn Puqi Shrine and hope my cat doesn't cause it to collapse. Maybe one day I'll make keychain versions of other TGCF characters as well!

I broke down how I would go about making Dimitri's new winter alt because I'm completely normal about it and not obsessed with him at all. (Also my spouse already emotionally committed to winter Felix and the designs match well).
I thought I would share because designs with a lot going on can be intimidating to break down, but going layer by layer and thinking about what makes sense for the garment helps me and is helpful to do if you get stuck or overwhelmed.
This one is on my list for AWA 2024, since it will be in December (and as much as I'd love to go to Holmat, there is no way my queer ass is going to Florida any time soon). I can't start this until I finish dancer Dimi and I'm still in goldwork hell for that.
(I forgot his pants so further detail about that and also a breakdown of the layers more concretely below the cut).
Here's the most informative referece images we're working with (first one is just the clean version of the one above):
Starting with the inner most layer to outermost (because I think that's the most straightforward):
1) The Pants
There are a lot of options here, depending on what you're going for. It's cold in Faerghus so if you're going for most appropriate options, you'd want to make these out of a heavier fabric. They're not skin tight (you can see this in the second image more clearly), so I personally will stay away from stretchy leggings, but I don't think that would matter much aesthetically if that is your preference. You could also match these to the jacket material, but I personally don't want to make velvet pants. A nice, heavier cotton or linen would probably do the job nicely here. A heavier cotton blend knit would be a good choice, with an elastic waistband (basically you'd be making sweatpants). If you do a nonstretch, you don't have to go with an elastic waistband, but consider how easy it is to reach your closure for things like bathroom breaks. There is a seam (maybe a pleat?) on the front of the legs so that is something to pay attention to if you're going for maximum accuracy. I'd make this a seam on the stretch pants. I'd make these pants capri length so that there is enough to fit under the knee armor and top of the boot so it stays, but there isn't excess bulk in the lower boot, and probably finish the end of the legs with an elastic cuff like some sweat pants are finished. Pockets are unnecessary for this layer because you really can't get them under the layers.
2) The Boots
I'd buy a pair of knee high black boots with a very short heel. You could make boot covers, but I'd only do that if you had a hard time matching the finish. These don't look like suede to me, these seem like a smooth black leather/faux leather. The heels you could leave alone (they just won't 100% match), or paint gold. I tend to scuff up heels that I paint, so if you go that route make sure to be prepared to touch them up occasionally. The cuff with the fur I would add as a separate piece, trying to match the leather texture as much as possible. You could glue or sew this on (probably by hand) to the base boot, or make it removable with something like velcro. I'd personally just attach it permanently, since you have to add the stars on anyway, and I'm not likely to make those a temporary attachment, though you could. For the fur, you can get some fur trim, or use the same fabric as the cape and fur mantle. I'll touch on construction of the stars later, since they match the ones on the coat, but I'd just glue these onto the boot with a good glue (E6000 would be my first choice). Not every glue works for every material so you may want to experiment. Other options that might work would be contact cement or loctite (which makes a pleather glue).
3) The Knee Armor
I'd go with EVA foam for these. You could use worbla for additional sturdiness if you wanted, or even 3D print these if you'd rather model them yourself... but the foam may help with movement, as it will give where plastic will not. These will be sturdy enough though with a thicker EVA foam (5 mm?), with thinner layers for the upper ones. The accents I would make with a thinner foam and as the top layer. It looks like these are 3 layers to me (4 with the details). They remind me of Byleth's knee armor on the Enlightened One, which I have worn and can attest to them being very stable with just craft foam. Honestly I would just attach these to the cuff at the bottom, and add some strapping behind the knee that can open with snaps or velcro for maximum stability. You could also add a snap onto the pants at the front of the knee for extra security as well.
4) The Tunic
This is the blue layer under the red coat. It has a slit in the side seam (you can see it in the second picture) - make sure you keep that for mobility if nothing else. I'd make this out of a fabric that has a sheen, as it looks like it does in the art. If you wanted to be really indulgent, you could use a silk of some kind (I think you could use smooth or textured, depending on the aesthetic you were going for). I'd probably go for a nice cotton (a cotton sateen would be very appropriate), since this cosplay will be hot and that will help with breathability. A dull poly satin would also work in a pinch, or maybe even a crepe back satin. Lots of options here, I'd just go with nonstretch. Since this will be covered, you have options for neckline and sleeves. I think it would be a good idea to have sleeves, since the coat, depending on material, could rub. For the gold motif at the bottom, you have lots of options too. You could use heat n bond with a gold satin to make an applique, or you could use a vinyl fabric for an applique. You could do beading here. Iron on vinyl would also work (I'd go with the shiny metallic one). I'd just make sure this is shiny, ideally shinier than the tunic fabric. This is a festive costume after all, you can bling it up. I'd only worry about the front panel. You can ignore the back since it won't be seen.
5) The Coat
I really think this should be made out of a sturdy, nonstretch velvet (probably one of the home decor velvets). An alternative would be microsuede. Based on the art, I think some kind of nice sherpa would be best for the fuzzy edges, to contrast with the fur on the cape. The brown belts I would just make out of a pleather, with snap or hook and eye closures on one side. The stars, since I said I would talk about those (this applies to the ones on the shoes too), I would do out of foam, worbla, a combo of those two, or 3d print. I'll probably 3d print these since I have it on good authority that I'm getting one for Christmas this year. The gold lines at the sleeves and bottom you could do as a satin applique, beading, vinyl, or some combination. Iron on vinyl may or may not work with the velvet, you'd want to test that. I'd probably use a gold satin bias tape for the edge at the front of the coat, I think that would be the easiest thing and would look the nicest for that part.
6) The belt
This would have a secret closure at the front for ease of getting on and off without having to undo the belt. I'd interface the hell out of a red fabric (probably a satin, cotton/cotton sateen, maybe velvet), and add an applique of the green at the edges (or bias tape). I'd make the tassels out of a fine metallic thread or floss, personally. You probably want to stiffen these so they stay nice and clean. The star I'll talk about with the mantle. Metallic pieces on the belt would be a combination of foam, worbla, and/or 3d printing.
7) The Breastplate
My spouse has already made a breastplate almost exactly like this, thankfully. I'll be making this out of EVA foam, 10 mm for the larger layer and 5 mm for the bottom (which will probably just be attached at the bottom edge of the 10 mm layer so there is less bulk to worry about). The details would be a thin foam. It looks like the top motif is probably a fleur de lis. The chest star, which mimics his timeskip armor in houses, looks like it is convex rather than concave, so I'd make this out of foam and maybe fill in the underside with something just for structure. The plate itself would work like a reverse backpack, with buckles that would attach at the back to keep it sturdy. When I work on this I'll upload a picture of the breastplate my spouse made for reference.
8) The Scarf
I'd match this to the cape liner or the tunic fabric, so go for something with a slight sheen. The gold details I'd iron on or applique, and potentially add some coordinating rhinestones for sparkle's sake.
9) The Cape
The big, fluffy cape. I think the outside should be made from a heftier fabric, probably a microsuede. This would drape nicely and match the overall aesthetic of the costume. The liner I would match to the tunic or the scarf, so some kind of satin or sateen. I would probably go for the iron on vinyl for the stars of the liner, but you could do the satin applique strategy.... but that's a LOT of satin stitching to finish edges. Applique would work better for the stars at the bottom of the outside. You could also incorporate beads and/or rhinestones. This is festive after all... I'd get a nice fake fur for the edge, which you can match to the furry mantle.
10) The Mantle
This matches his houses design, based on the references, so you can refer to the in game art. Making this out of fake fur is the easiest option. My spouse attempted to make this by latch hooking yarn, but the brushing..... it will be less time and energy to go the fur route, but would be more money. For the stars, you could 3d print them, and gold leaf if you wanted a lot of shine. You'd probably want to hook these to the fur with invisible thread instead of gluing them, or you could match the thread to your gold paint. I'm also considering beading these on felt and I would attach them the same way, with invisible or matching thread. The one at the bottom of the belt you can sew or glue on, but I'd match construction to the mantle stars.
11) The Gloves
Technically lower in the layers than the coat, but awkward to put in earlier. These look like a faux suede or leather to me. I'd make them out of a nonstretch with a personalized, gusset-including glove pattern.
12) The Wig
It's a short, pale blonde wig. You might want a lace front with his hairline. But I think you can make it work without it... you'll have to do some styling with those bangs. This matches his pre-timeskip hair closely. The holly I would wire in to the wig after making, and use maybe beading or glitter an existing floral pick.
13) The Axe
I'm not a prop person, so this will be very basic. Pvc or dowel base, with foam, worbla, and/or 3d printed parts. The bow would look nice as a loop bow. You'd put the color blocks on there as previously discussed with bias tape.
That's my wall of words on that! I hope this was helpful to somebody. I'm planning on getting started on this one next year after some other costumes in the queue.
If you want to see a breakdown of anything else please let me know.

So you wanna be a king (pt3)
or maybe you just wanna cosplay one.
Continuing the cosplay semi-tutorial-semi-rambling for those who love one smol bean and wish to dress as him for funsies:
Part 3: Trousers and Boots
Okay, so, at this point you’ve probably spent at least $150, and at least enough hours to watch every Game Grumps King’s Quest LP (that's three and a quarter full games) three times. Likely more.
It’s time to pull out your screencaps again, to remind yourself why we’re here.
(it’s for this cute face, with all his determination and compassion and bravery and intelligence. That’s why.)
You’ve got a jerkin (pt 2) and a cloak (pt 1) but it’s indecent to walk around without anything waist down, so let’s a’stitch some trousers. And also some boots while we’re at it.
Trousers!
When I was at the Renfest, someone asked me where I got my neat blue riding pants. Well, for starters......they’re yoga pants. And also, Goodwill. Have you noticed a trend with me yet.
This knobbly-kneed lad is definitely not pulling a Men In Tights routine--there’s too much definition and stiffness in the wrinkles. I decided on sweatpants, though, because why not? May as well be comfy. (The more accurate fabric choice would probably be like, a khaki material, but, nah). I selected two separate pairs in the colors I wanted.
Because this costume isn’t warm enough, I attached the lighter pair over the darker rather than Frankenstein-sew two chopped parts together. It’s kind of like wearing pants and a half. Because I’m the monster. And also I was concerned that long-term wear would weaken the stitching if I pulled a Frankenstein, and this costume has been time consuming enough without risking it falling apart on me.
What that means is this: I put on the darker pair, measured about how wide it looked Graham’s pants were vs on me, turned the lighter pair inside out so I could mark the width on them, and cut out a long and bizarre looking rectangle from the inner section of the light pair.
The reason why we cosplay is to get into our favorite character’s pant--no, I’m sorry, the joke’s too bad, I’ll see myself out.
I selected three inches wide on either side of the inner pant hem, so six inches wide in total, from ankle to ankle. This does mean there’s more fabric around the ankle since they naturally slim down, but the boot covers that. Since the lighter pair had an elastic stretchy cuff, I left that intact so the pants wouldn’t bunch up when walking.
Immediately after cutting out the light pair, I ran it through my sewing machine with that herringbone stitch (the zigzag triangles) to “seal” the fabric edge and prevent fraying. It gives it kind of a bubbly textured look if you look closely, but if you’re not about that life, you could cut out an extra inch and hem it back for a straight clean line.
I then carefully lined up all the hemlines, light to dark, pinning as flat and evenly as possible. Then, hand sewing. Bane of my novice cosplay life.
First I stitched hemline to hemline so it would be precisely centered, then again along the edges of the light fabric. So I sewed this thing by hand three times, paying special attention to the area where the legs intersect since that’s where the most friction from walking and picking up inventory items and the like will wear. Just sew along existing hemlines. It can be sloppy; no one will ever see your stitches--unless you turn it inside out to make a semi-tutorial for strangers on the internet, and then they’ll laugh at you.
If you feel fancy, you can add the thick patches on Graham’s trousers. I didn’t bother at the time because it felt like a bit much, but I do really like those patches. Maybe someday.
Also, you should probably handwash this piece too. Unless you trust your sloppy stitches more than I trust mine.
Boots!
I’ma tell you a secret: my absolute favorite part of all of Graham’s outfit is the boots. I love them. I want a real pair. Like, with actual metal bits, not cheap eBay boots and shoe goo and hope. The boots are at least a quarter of the reason why I made this costume in the first place.
And yet, the boots were the last thing I made, more than a year after completing the rest of the costume. I wore shin-high lace up boots in the meantime, and it was fine, but knee length is truly the ideal silhouette against your cloak. It does make a difference.
I’ve made boot covers before (Lynne, Ghost Trick, bright red), and it’s fine, but it’s also frustrating. I highkey recommend just modifying a regular boot. There are lots of gorgeous, expensive options out there, but in the end I settled for a bootleg boot from China (you know, the ones that are “fashion” but which all use the same stock image and are fake mimics for a fraction of the cost on eBay) for a grand total of...$25.00, with shipping. Ye boi.
According to the receipt this boot is an.....”American Rag Ada Round Toe Synthetic Over the Knee Boot.” Cool, deffo bootleg.
Another secret: I put gel inserts in both the toe and the heel, I wear gel-ankle socks over my regular socks, and I stuff the heels with leftover plushie-making cotton fluff. Because bootleg boots are cheap and blistery, and comic con floors are hard enough even with a nice sturdy pair of shoes, so seek every advantage you can. More cotton fluff. More! Stuff it in there! And also wear your favorite patterned socks, because it’s my tutorial and I said so.
Okay, back to the store. Get the following things: a small amount of stretchy black fabric, a small amount of gray fabric, a sheet or two of craft foam, a tube of shoe goo, and popsicle sticks or some other way to “paint” the goo. Also an audiobook to help pass the time. (can you believe no one’s recorded the King’s Quest novels into an audiobook form, how tragic.)
Using some of the boundless scrap you have from the rest of this cosplay, determine how wide you want the black pieces to be, and maybe the gray while you’re at it. That fully depends on your boot.
Cut out your black for the front and back pieces. They won’t be pure rectangles, but have a trapezoid curve to them to mimic the shoe curve. Pin and hem.
Apply shoe goo around the whole section of the boot you’re covering, as flat and even as possible, and stretch, apply, and pin your black fabric into place. Do little detail work with the popsicle sticks, and once it’s all pinned, leave to dry for a while. Ideally, overnight, so the glue can set.
Go play King’s Quest again or something while you’re waiting. It’s not like you have anything else to do, right?
This boot happened to already have a buckle on the back which I wrapped in gray fabric to mimic the silver on Graham’s heels--your boot probably doesn’t have this, so use this following method instead.
To get the silver cuffs, I cut out foam (you might have to look around for foam in a good thickness, or glue multiple sheets together--mine is, uh....the thick foam my bose headphones came in.....), and glued fabric over it. Then I glued the foam/fabric curve to the shoe, pinned it in place, and walked away again. I sure hope you like your audiobook. There’s a lot of downtime here.
This method works for the anklets too. Wrap foam entirely in black fabric. Hilariously, since it’s foam, I didn’t have any trouble pushing it through my sewing machine to add the gray on top of the black. Another secret: my anklets connect via elastic, so I can get the boots on while still having a snug anklet. No, it probably doesn’t look great if you’re walking right behind me, but there’s that 5 foot rule of cosplay that means no one should see it, and who’s staring at my heels anyway, that’s weird.
Cut thin regular plain sheet foam in the right size to fit over your toe. To achieve the curve, cut out little notches (you can just see a discarded notch in the included picture), then glue the edges together again sans notch. Bam, curve. Cover in fabric, glue to the toes of the boots like everything else, pin, and wait until dry (yes, overnight again--I did tell you about the audiobook).
And that’s that! (At least, for me: I have not done the laces on the front, or cut out the knee guard, or anything that requires actual intensive boot modification because I was in a hurry to go meet Christopher Lloyd and on a deadline and forgot to come back to it. No, for reals. Comic cons are magic places.) It’s held up for two full years at cons and renfests and even in a light rain without trouble, tho I do need to touch up some of the edges a bit.
Put the whole thing together: jerkin, cloak, cowl, trousers, boots. You’re looking fiiiine. All the cool cats are jealous of your sweet new kicks.
And with that, all the giant heavy pieces of your cosplay are done! It’s just accessories and details left. And the adventuring cap, one might argue the most important piece of all. But we’ll get there. Probably. As long as this is helping someone.
#King's Quest#kings quest#King Graham#cosplay#okay i admit i'm stalling because i don't remember how i made the hat#i'll get to it maybe#tutorial

Spotting Great Quality Business Shirts
What makes a great quality business shirt?
Seems like an easy question to answer. Good fabric, big brand name, stylish colors. These aspects go into creating great quality business shirts, but if you delve into the inner workings of top quality business shirts you may be surprised that some of your big-name brands are cutting corners. Don’t always assume that the business shirt dollar value equates to quality shirt. I will cover some areas to help you pick out or find the best business shirt in the store.
What a business shirt stands for?
Business shirts have come along way over the past century. Originally business shirts were the base of your attire, predominantly custom made with many varying looks. Business shirts were a symbol of who you were, your social status and wealth. Back then this was a big part of life and dress shirts helped you convey your status to the outside world. Fast forward 50 years to the age of manufacturing and suddenly tailored shirts were out and classic fitting white shirts in. Companies realized the power of manufacturing huge amounts of business shirts in a standard style and sizes. This allowed customers to purchase a shirt instantly rather than waiting for a fitted shirt to be custom made. By doing this we all lost a massive piece of history on how we used to wear dress shirts. Nowadays business shirt manufactures are aiming to win your business and separate themselves from the rest of the industry by returning to the old ways. You can find business shirts made in thousands of fabrics, with big amounts of variations of collars, cuffs, pleats and plackets.
Fabric
This is the beginning of a quality business shirt, it all starts with the fabric. There are a large amounts of fabric types available from Broadcloth, Twill, Pinpoint, Chambray, Denim, Dobby, End on End, Flannel. I will elaborate further on these fabric types in a future blog. The main building block is Egyptian cotton. 100% Egyptian cotton in single or 2 ply best suits a dress shirts. The fine long fibers create a soft weave maintaining strength and durability and shirt longevity giving you maximum breathability and comfort. Thread count should be around 80 to 120 threads anything above 200 threads is considered top notch.
The fabric pattern should line up, this is the hallmark of a quality business shirt. This is a great way to quickly check shirt quality. The pattern should match from the shoulder through to the sleeve, sleeve to cuff placket, the front of the shirt and the button placket and the pocket if included. The ability to match these main areas is quite difficult and is a sign of quality manufacturing, and with anything manufactured the more time spent on the little things the increase base cost of the product.
Stitching
A little bit hard to analyze by eye but the stitching is a tell-tale sign of quality made business shirts. The stitching that is visible should be tight, bunched and evenly stitched. A quality dress shirt could have around 25 stitches per inch. The heavier density in stitching points towards a more durable business shirt and a classier look.
Dress shirts can be made with either single needle stitching or double needle stitching. Single needle stitching represents higher quality again due to time committed in manufacturing and the result is cleaner finished business shirt. A single needle stitch is hard to master and only top manufacturers or tailors attempt this. A single row of stitches is sewn, the fabric is then folded back onto itself and sewn again. Keeping the fabric straight and even in this process is the trick. Double needle stitching is usually confined to a more casual shirt.
Collars
Collars are important and the right situation calls for the right collar, they come in two types; fused and non-fused and both collars are called for in different situations. If you have a button-down collar or more casual shirt, then head towards the soft non-fused collar but in most scenarios when you’re wearing a business shirt and tie you want a stiff crisp fused collar. Removable collar stays with a fused collar shirt is the first check I look for when inspecting the quality of business shirts. Generally, stays come in plastic, stainless steel and for the top 1% gold. Stays keep the collar flat, pointing down and straight.
The collar points should align perfectly with each other. Some people say that beauty lies in symmetry and this is the case with collar points. An uneven collar point can throw out your entire look. There is a large amount of collar styles available and often styles come in and out of fashion.
Complementing your face is the most important function of your collar. I have no doubt that certain style collars suit a certain type of face. Collars come in many different styles, the main styles being button down, spread, tab, cutaway, classic point and wingtip.
The classic point is the standard collar that most business shirts come in. The classic collar suits all neck, face types and shapes so if all else fails go the classic styled collar.
The spread and cut away collars both have a wider point to point length with the cut away collar pushing the limits as to how far collar points can be spaced. The spread and cut away collars suit long and thin faces. The wide collar points accentuate width of your neck and face.
The button down is a relaxed casual style collar. For any semi casual or semi-formal event break out the button-down shirt. I would however stick to a more formal collar when matching business shirts with your suits.
The tab and bar collar is a golden oldie. Probably regarded as one of the more formal collars. The tab which fastens the shirt behind the tie will keep you looking good all day by pushing the tie knot forward and out. The bar collar works in the same way, the bar is placed and fastened through eyelets on the collar and goes from one collar point to the other and again pushing the tie not forward.
The wing collar is a formal black tie collar and worn with a bow tie.
Yoke
The yoke is the upper back shoulder part of your business shirt. Great quality shirts have will have a split yoke which has two pieces of material sewn together. The material will be sewn together on an angle and at the same time line up if the material is patterned. The benefit of the split yoke is a wider range of movement when leaning forward.
Buttons
Another sign of quality shirts. The mother of pearl button is widely known as the top-level button material. The mother of pearl button offers a beautiful deep color and shine along with durability withstanding the vigor of continual washing and ironing. An easy check to see if your mother of pearl buttons are genuine, try feeling the button for heat. Mother of pearl buttons are generally cooler to touch than plastic buttons. Some people use their tongue to test this due to your tongue being sensitive to heat.
You should expect a set of spare buttons attached to your business shirts. You will usual get a spare button for each size used in manufacturing. The high-quality business shirts will last you a considerable amount of time and like most of us every now and then a button disappears or breaks.
Button Holes
The correct button hole process is conducted during manufacturing so it’s not something you can tell when inspecting business shirts. Tailors will cut the hole first and then sew the button hole. What you can see by eye is tightly sewn button holes and a horizontally cut and sewn bottom button hole. This gives you a bit more room and button hole strength when you sit down.
Sewn Buttons
When the buttons are attached to the shirt they should be sitting evenly and firmly sewn to the shirt. A cross stich or X through the holes are desired and supply maximum support to the buttons when fastened.
Gusset
A reinforced side seem gusset is a must for quality shirts. The gusset is applied using a triangular piece of fabric which is folded and sewn into bottom of the seams on both sides of your dress shirt. This stops unnecessary wear or tearing of the side seems.
Cuffs
As with the collars a fused cuff is the way to go. A fused cuff offers a clean crisp look and the non-fused cuff is used for a more causal shirt. Cuffs in general whether French or barrel should be hand sewn. The cuffs are a difficult part of business shirt manufacturing and shows the skill of the tailor and manufacture.
There are 3 common cuffs used for business shirts and they are the French, barrel and cocktail cuff.
The barrel cuff is the most common cuff used. It works well in both formal and semi-formal situations. Barrel cuffs come with one, two or three button setups. The two-button setup is the way to go. A barrel cuff should have tapered edges that meet when the cuff is buttoned.
The French cuff or double cuff are twice as long as the barrel cuff and folds back on itself. Once folded back you drive the cufflink directly through the button hole from top to bottom through 4 layers of cuff fabric.
The cocktail cuff is similar to the French cuff. It folds back on itself stiffly and buttons up. There is no need for cufflinks for the cocktail or James Bond cuffs.
Button settings for each cuff can have slight variance. Most quality business shirts offer a button setting to allow you to wear a watch. Shirts used to only offer this option on the left hand as this was the watch hand. Nowadays dress shirts are often fitted with this button setup on both cuffs. So, you can have one cuff loosely buttoned to accommodate your watch.
Plackets
The placket takes on the load of the buttons down the center of the shirt. Having a placket doesn’t necessarily equate to a quality and workmanship, and it’s up to the wearer to decide their personal preference.
The normal or conventional placket is the most commonly used and gives the shirt an added lifespan and supports the button load.
The French placket simply folds the fabric to the inside of the shirt so the stitching on the front is invisible.
The fly placket has a line of material concealing the shirt buttons underneath. You will see a fly placket at black tie events when tuxedos are worn.
The contrast placket is a modern version. The placket in this case is a different fabric to the main shirt body. You may have seen people with similar fabric contrast used in the underside of a cuff.
Pleats
The pleats on a shirt are most often overlooked when purchasing an off the shelf quality dress shirt. The pleat was originally designed to aid movement through the shoulder and back. A skillful tailor or manufacture can apply a pleat through the back of the shirt while keeping access material to minimum. Having a good quality pleat is a sign of good shirt this adds considerable time to the manufacturing process and for that reason many of the cheaper business shirts skip this process.
A plain pleat is standard straight fitting back. Having this gives you a minimal range of shirt movement through the back.
Side pleats are reserved for more formal dress shirts. They give a nice clean fit and are recommended for slim fit business shirts.
A box pleat is the most commonly used pleat
An inverted pleat is the just the opposite of the box pleat.
Shirt length
If you are wearing your business shirt exclusively with a suit and only tucked in, a slightly longer shirt is preferable. You are better off having your shirt completely tucked in without the worry of a wardrobe malfunction and becoming untucked. You can always try a shirt with less length and wear it untucked. This way you don’t look as formal but it can be a tricky look to pull off.
Sleeves
The sleeves should be sewn on last, positioned correctly to line up perfectly with the body of the dress shirt. Cheaper business shirts often have the sleeves sewn during the shirt manufacturing and in these cases the sleeves tend to not sit right when wearing the business shirt. When you look at the armpit of the dress shirt the seams should line up perfectly in a plus shape. This is a very easy spot to check shirt quality.
It’s important to match all great quality shirt aspects with what makes you feel the best. You being comfortable is the most import part of a great business shirt. Be wary of expensive dress shirts, shirt manufacturers nowadays are following these guidelines and supplying top quality and well priced shirts. With this guide, you can now judge a quality shirt based on the price yourself.
