As someone who also values the “together” part between couples, it always warms his heart when you insist on eating together. He knows it’s your way of showing how you care for him and his well being as he’s being loved as himself. Not as Nightwing. Not as his civilian persona. If the reverse were to occur, he definitely wouldn’t be able to eat as he’d be feeling that he's being negligent and inconsiderate of you. It’s how he develops the habit to always eat with you whether it’s getting back on time to eat something you cooked or getting take out for two. He always wants to do things with you no matter what it is so he can always be with you and doesn’t want you to ever think you’re lacking or not doing enough. In fact, to him, the way you are is more than enough. You being you was what had him fall head-over-heels for you from the start and he’ll honestly die with a broken heart if you try changing because of him. 

Jason:

Surprising enough, he also understands and appreciates the sentiment. To be fair, when he was caught by Bats after his failed attempt in stealing the tires from the Batmobile, he was treated to a meal at some diner before getting taken in. The appreciation of sharing a meal didn’t come back once he was revived until meeting the Outlaws which then was cemented when he met and envisioned his future with you in it. The first time he got you a meal and not himself was his last as it had led to an argument between the two of you. When you reveal you wanted to make sure he’s also caring for himself, it made him think how he’s not going to be able to find another person who’ll treasure him like you. He does acknowledge that his family cares for him despite their differences, but it won’t match with how his heart speeds up from how you look out for him. Since then, he’s been eating most of his meals with you as he finds food tasting better when he’s with you rather than eating alone like usual. 

Tim:

He is very much aware that he can’t argue against you when it comes to you telling him you’re eating only if he eats. With the number of times you caught him going through energy drinks including the other day when he was on his third can of Celsius, even he admits his diet isn’t exactly healthy. So, it won’t help his case when, at rare moments, he complains about you saying that only to get shot back with your fears and concerns for his health. In those moments, he gets sheepish and gives in from the justification of your argument, ordering something for himself and you when stopping by at a drive-through or pulling himself from his work to head to the table where you set a plate in front of you and him. Most of the time, you aren’t saying that line as he’s already planning ten-steps ahead on where and what the two of you will eat (of course with consideration of your taste) in an attempt to get you to stay with him longer. 

Duke:

He gets where you’re coming from but the reason he pushes back is because he wants to show that he’s dependable and capable of caring for both you and himself. If he’s hungry, he’s going to get himself while asking you if you want something as well. If you aren’t hungry, he gets sneaky and buys something small knowing you’ll want a snack or drink later. When it comes to you and you’re hungry while he isn’t, you are his priority and he’s going to make sure you get fed. He ends up consoling you when he sees the guilt and worry in your eyes, letting himself take a bite of whatever you’re having or a sip. He stops there though, which you have no choice to begrudgingly accept as he promises to go get something if he gets hungry. It’s endearing and he always cracks a smile whenever you tell him that, getting fuzzy from how tender you are to him.

Damian:

He’s the one who won’t get it. It always leads to you two fighting whenever you get stubborn and refuse to eat unless he does. No matter who he had asked so far from Dick to even Tim of all people, he still doesn’t get it. He’s not hungry. You are. So you’re the one who should be eating, why do you need him to eat with you when you’re old enough to feed yourself? There’s nothing hard; it’s pure logic. When you try to explain food tastes better when it’s shared, it never goes well as he simply points out nothing is being done to the food when it’s being shared except for the portion getting smaller. That’s how arguments always go along with the same ending where you’d get fed up and simply stuff his mouth. Cue his expression morphing from offended to reluctant acceptance as he’s awarded with either a grin or blush from you, both equally lovable and adorable. By the time the food is gone, he has been eating as if he’s disgruntled when he’s actually enjoying sharing a meal with you.

but you're totally right- there's nothing other than the timing/when paul wears it and as near as i can tell, there's no source on it whatsoever, just people tinhatting. so we can't necessarily say it's Untrue, but it's a bit like speculating that they started a sexual relationship in hamburg or that x song was written about y... there's not much in the way of proving one way or another, unless paul comes out and says something different

with that SAID if someone says "john gave paul a bracelet" THAT'S definitely misinformation (intentional or not ofc). it's not fact. it's just a theory & i think somewhere that got a bit lost in translation? but anyway i'll break down what you mean by the timeline so others know wtf we're talking about here lmao

i've seen people say that there's pictures of him from Before 1963 with the bracelet on, but i can't find them.

so the options come down to: it was a gift from jane, it was a gift from john, it was a gift from his mother, or it was a gift from one of his other relatives

a couple of reasons people doubt the jane aspect is that he continued to wear it into the 70s & then ofc people claim that he had it before he met her. i can't find any evidence of him having the bracelet before jane, so i take that with a grain of salt. i'd think for me personally the only thing discounting it from being from jane is the fact the he still wore it during anthology. if it were just the 70s, that might be hand-waved away because it can still take a bit to get rid of everything an ex gave you. but by anthology, he definitely would've been over it.

people also point to him being cagey and saying "let's just say it has close sentimental value" as a reason it's Not from jane, but honestly i don't find that very compelling because at the time of this letter he was still like. out as being with jane, but it was peak beatlemania when they were supposed to be appearing single & approachable. so if it was from jane, i don't think he'd say that here either.

the oooonly other point against it being from jane is simply that i've seen people assert they "know for a fact" that it's from jane because people had matching sweetheart bracelets back then- but she's never seen wearing one. but that's just against them having matching ones, i really don't know if she gave it to him or not.

i don't see any reason that it wouldn't be from a family member that's not his mom, though. if it were his mom, there definitely would've been photos of him wearing it long before 1963. so For Me it comes down to john or another family member. jane is also still a strong possibility to me, although like i said the anthology bit throws a wrench in that for me, unless that's a different bracelet completely. or who knows, maybe he got attached to it outside of her- i've definitely kept things from exes long after i give a shit about them if i'm being honest.

another piece people like to throw in is that in both of the photos of him wearing it after his and john's split, he's wearing it on his right wrist rather than his left, like a widower would if it were a ring. not convincing to me honestly, but it's a part of The Whole Theory/Headcanon bit

others also speculate it could be from ringo! ringo had a similar one and I wouldn't be too surprised if paul liked his so he got him one for his 21st. definitely An option to consider!

also, if anyone knows the exact date on that teeth brushing photo that would be lovely. or if anyone happens to have a photo of him with the bracelet from Before he met jane.

but yeah tl;dr: it's theory, if anyone says it's for sure fact they are misinformed or just really want to believe it. no one knows who gave paul that bracelet and i doubt we'll ever know, so have fun.

Apparently these are unpopular opinions but I don't want Wilmon to be endgame and I don't want Wilhelm to abdicate. (I think the show might be heading down the Wilmon endgame + abdication route but I can't imagine them doing it in a way which would feel satisfying to me personally.)

All I could think about throughout the whole season was how unsuitable for each other these two are. They're so different, and I don't just mean their backgrounds, I mean every single thing about them. Their personalities (this one is huuuuge), their values, apparently even their interests since after 3 seasons I can't really name a single thing they both genuinely enjoy (maybe rowing? or was Simon there for a reason? can't remember), unless we count sex which... fair but a rather shaky framework if a long-term relationship is what you're after.

What do they even talk about? Other than Simon hating the system which Wilhelm is at the very centre of. Or the fact that they don't understand each other because Wilhelm is too privileged and Simon is too big a socialist. And while I hate the phrasing I do agree with the sentiment wholeheartedly because it's actually absolutely 100% true. What we have here, ladies and gentlemen, is a conflict of interest. Plain and simple.

One thing that was very clear from the very beginning is that Simon doesn't understand what a relationship with a crown prince entails and that he's really not the kind of person who'd want or should be in such a relationship. He cares too much about other people's opinions, which isn't necessarily bad in and of itself, but people are going to have a lot of opinions if you're dating someone in the public eye, especially the future king, and they're going to be nasty af. Because they can. It's just the reality, nothing you can do about it.

I know a lot of people say that he didn't get media training and so on and so forth. And it is very true and valid. However, a lot of this boils down to his personality. You don't need media training to know that reading comments is a bad idea, let alone replying to them. To me, it's just common sense, and I know he's only 16, but even though it's been a while, I do still remember being 16 and my mindset (on this subject) has not changed since then. Especially if you know you're going to take it to heart, you shouldn't even be looking at the bs people post online.

Simon doesn't fit into Wilhelm's world not because he's poor. He doesn't fit into Wilhelm's world because his personality and values simply don't work in this context. How do you even begin to solve a problem like this? You just can't.

Simon has a very strong personality and even stronger beliefs. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it, it's admirable, but this creates so many problems that are virtually unsolvable. If you watch the series (not just the third season, it's been shown consistently), Simon needs Wilhelm to agree with him. And he wants Wilhelm to do it openly and preferably to feel about it as strongly as he does. Which simply isn't going to happen. In order for this to work, Simon would have to change his entire personality and that would be just awful.

Re: Wilhelm abdicating. You don't make a decision like that at the age of 17. Because this is literally life-changing and there's no going back. His brother just died. His mother is having a nervous breakdown. His father is absolutely helpless. You work through all of that first.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it's only been a couple of months since the accident. Oh and now Wilhelm finds out that his brother was human and not some perfect Disney prince. And he gets front row seats to his always-unnaturally-composed mother's descent into literal madness. Just imagine how terrifying it must feel. This boy is going through a lot, this is not the time to be making huge decisions.

I genuinely believe that Wilhelm would make a great king. Keep in mind that for 16 years, it never occured to him that he might have to do this. This was dropped on him like a bag of cement, together with the news that his older brother, whom he worshipped, was dead. All things considered, he's doing great. Come to think of it, Erik's death is the root of 99% of Wilhelm's current problems. Like he said, he never got to grieve and now on top of that he thinks that his brother was an arsehole and would have hated him for dating another boy. But I think Wilhelm finding out about what happened at the initiation is actually going to help him heal.

Wilhelm abidicating just feels too much like giving in, like he was running away from his problems which is a bit OOC. And it would feel like he was doing it for Simon which is such a bad idea on so many levels. I can't put into words how stupid it would be and, as impulsive as he can get at times, Wilhelm doesn't strike me as the kind of person to just completely fail to think of consequences of his actions when it comes to something this big. I can't for the life of me explain why, but he does come across as rather level-headed and sensible, specially for a 16/17-year-old going through what he's been going through. Certain... incidents... aside (the rifle... yeah, the hell were you thinking? you need to chill out and let it go). Season 2 was peak recklessness, he seems a bit more mellow and settled now. Although breaking up with Simon might turn out to be the final straw, yikes...

Do you truly believe that Callum is the only best thing that's happened to Rayla?

I don't think Callum is the only good thing in Rayla's life, but I do absolutely agree with her sentiment that he's the best thing she's ever had / that's ever happened to her. This is for a few reasons (mostly only talking about arc 1 as that's the time she's referring to, but I'm also gonna be touching on S4/S5):

In Bloodmoon Huntress, the long time headcanon of post-s1-s3 fans that Rayla was a relatively friendless / lonely child was confirmed. This makes Callum and Ezran her first real friends, and while she's more likely to lean on Ezran for support (in arc 1 at least) initially than Callum is, Callum is still more so her peer (due to being similar ages) and is her first and main Best Friend. For that alone, I'd buy her statement.

Then there's the other ways Callum has changed her life. He is:

The person who inspired her to actively work towards breaking the cycle past the point of 1) believing it was right for Zym to return home and 2) to make up for her parents' perceived/failures mistakes, as seen most prominently in 2x07. This is something she is willing to die for, and while Rayla is (unfortunately) willing to die for many things, this is the cause she believes in and feels centred in: "Every fibre in my body is telling me that [leaving her] is wrong [...] It doesn't just feel like the right thing to do, it feels like the right thing for me to do. It's where I'm meant to be." ("Look at yourself, Rayla. Who are you? What do you stand for? Once you know that, you'll end up where you were always meant to be.") Someone giving you a much more positive worldview that aligns with your values and sense of rightness is certainly a big deal (and a positive one, particularly for someone who's struggled with hesitating over what feels right for so much of her life.

Callum is the first person in Rayla's life to love her wholly unconditionally. While Rayla is deeply loved by all four of her parents, and I've gone on record saying that Tiadrin and Lain didn't do anything wrong, arc 1 sees Rayla brush up against the lingering cultural hangups and choices that make her family's love for her feel if not outright be somewhat conditional. She is shunned by her village (condition 1), while Ethari says goodbye to her and embraces her he still turned his back on her (condition 2), Runaan was heavily disappointed in her betrayal of him/the mission and left her (condition 3), and her parents put their duty over her / being her parents (condition 4). Callum says fuck all that shit. He refuses to leave even when she's pushing him away. He loves and admires her for the exact things she's been punished or shamed for ("You have true courage and a big heart" -> "Even when her own people might misunderstand and turn against her"). He says she doesn't deserve to be Ghosted, she doesn't deserve to be unjustly turned away for a mistake she didn't even make, he says and shows that it's okay for her to be scared and that she can (and should) rely on him.

This is even more intrinsically tethered given Chasing Shadows and the canon fact that Callum and his love for her 1) kept her from throwing what little remained of her life away entirely and 2) literally kept her from forsaking her name/identity/everything else that makes her Rayla and 3) gave her the courage to try and come home to somewhere she'd be safe and loved, even if she knew/felt she didn't deserve to. There's an underlying belief in Chasing Shadows we see carry through into S4 where Rayla truly believes Callum can do and overcome just about anything, and if he can do the impossible, then maybe so can she:

She backed away, close to the pit’s edge. The crowd shouted and screamed at her ears, their spittle landing on her neck. It rattled her. The human kicked dirt at her, and Rayla scraped at her eyes, angry—infuriated, even. Humans were frustrating. Humans were clever. Humans could do anything, they could be anything, they could take their own fates and change them—

It is for all these reasons that Rayla clearly considers him to be her family and the love of her life. She gives him the pendant (from Ethari to Runaan, then Ethari to her, and then her to Callum) as a symbol of both familial and romantic love. He seems to be the first person she's had serious feelings for and certainly the first person she's fallen in love with.

She was originally going to confess first (2x09) back when she clearly didn't have any thought or inclination he'd ever love her back, either. Then he did, and it elevated an already very steady and safe relationship to one that was good natured, even more incredibly supportive, and wholly unconditional.

And given how he supports and loves her in S4 and S5, I am even more inclined to think she's Right <3

Hi you!! I'm so glad you're back! You genuinely brighten my day! When I get over my crippling fear of being annoying, you will be bombarded with love back!

What an Ass-testic!

I've always seen Jean as a person who prides comfort over style.

When she's a kid, she's all about overalls and things with pockets. The front pocket of her overalls has any cool bug she finds and/or a cool lizard! The freakier looking the creature the more likely it's going to stuffed into the pocket, at least until someone makes her put it back.

Middle school turns to gym clothes mostly. Jean is 100% that fucko who's wearing basketball shorts in the cold, the baggy kind that come down to your knees. But this is also where she starts wearing more band shirts! Dio, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, Black Sabbath...the whole nine yards!

High school, there's not much of a change. The only difference is that she starts to embrace the fact that she is in fact a woman. It's around this time where she begins the uphill struggles of accepting her body. Jean honestly thinks for a long time that she's a lumbering, giant. (I won't go into this too much because I'm working on a tiny fic that goes into her inner monolog). Long story short, through the help of the other girls, she begins to wear skirts. She starts small, putting shorts under them and if it gets to be too much she carries a pair of jeans with her. But this era of Jean is what I could only lovingly describe as "Tony Hawk Underground 2 grunge."

When she's an adult, she grows a little more and gets comfortable in her own skin. She realizes that her height shouldn't restrict what she wears and rocks the punk/80s rock style.

If we had to pick a defining clothing item, the "poof ball hat" or the "orange parka" for her, it would he her blue jean jacket. The one with her patched all over them. That jacket she keeps as long as she can, each patch she has on there is for someone special to her. (I plan on redrawing that soon!)

Her space!

Oh man, is it embarrassing to say that I've redone her room like three times in the sims? Her room is what most can relate to where it's an ADHD mess. Like, she understands where everything is because it's in its own little special place. If she cleans it or organizes it, it might as well be gone. That's not to say her room is insanely messy... just well lived.

For starters, lots of posters and pictures. The picture with her and Stan gives a good little look. Jean has those lights and printed photos along her walls, hanging from her ceiling. Posters of horror movies and different bands she's seen live! Beside them are her different instruments. Guitars of different sizes and colors, a few bases, maybe a few records.

The only guitar that isn't up on the wall is her purple one. That stays beside her bed or on her back. When she's bored or feels the need to practice, it's within arms reach. I can see her also having a few energy drinks within reach as well.

She chooses sentimental over material value. The only thing she really splurges on is her bed! She's a tall lady and treats herself to many blankets and pillows. On it is her old stuffed tiger. You know the kinda plushy that's old as hell and has clearly been patched up too many times, so it looks kinda creepy? Yeah, that's just sitting there in her room, sometimes on her beanbag chair.

Pets~!

While Jean would have loved a dog, especially when she was younger, she's not really responsible enough for one. She neglects herself quite often, and even though I just went into detail about her room, she's not home if she can help it. Jean understands that it's not fair for any pet, so she doesn't really get one until she's an adult. Though she does live vicariously through Stan with Sparky. Or Cartman with his cat!

I can see her doing some research and getting a snake when she's an adult! Probably a Western Hognose Snake! She'd fall in love with their goofy little faces. Letting it rest on her shoulders and neck when she finally gets comfortable with being home. That little guy makes it easier to want to be home!

I do have a design for her! Maybe once I finish the mountain of projects I have, I'll post an actual picture! I don't see Jean changing too much!

This one is pretty close, though! Jean keeps up with her body, growing to really love it! The only real difference that I would add is that she kinda ditches the braids and starts putting her hair up in a bun. The only time she cut her hair was when she was a kid, and she looked a little too much like Tweek and swore never again. So she keeps her hair long, and the braids just get to be too much. That and she gets a few tattoos! But those are on her back and on her calves, and I'm still debating an arm one for her. (One of them will be a call out to Rhea Ripley because that's who I based Jean's body type off of!)

I have talked about it before, but it never hurts to say it again! I kinda said it in passing anyway!

Jean stays in South Park her entire life. That mountain town is her home, it's a part of her. It's something she loves with all her heart.

So, of course, she centers her career around the very thing that made her who she is. Music!

Jean is a high-school music teacher full time! It isn't until the very last minute of high school that she figures this out. Teaching some younger kids how to play guitar because she got roped into volunteer work, and she finds that she's pretty good at it!

The music and arts are very important to her! Especially in such a little town!

Fractured, Broken Even

Oh baby! You know AUs are my favorite thing to ramble about! So yeah, I have a design for her Superhero!AU design. I scrapped it a few times and I've got to work on it again but I based it heavily off of Pizzaz from Gem and the Holograms!

She's not a hero, just like her TSOT!AU, she's an antagonist!

If we're talking about them being kids: She puts on this 80s glam wig, paints her face these vibrant colors of orange and green. Grabs her stupid little guitar and causes problems! Why should Professor Chaos have all the fun? He shouldn't be the only one! Besides, it's unfair that South Park has two superhero teams and theirs only like one antagonist (and Cartman). She's goofy and plays up wanting an arch-nemesis so bad it makes her look stupid!

As for the AU: Jean Wellman only wants one thing in life, the consistency in every universe, and that's to be remembered and loved. What better way to do that than to carve your name into music. So she takes to the stages and gives the people all that she is.

That is until a fight between The Freedom Pals and Professor Chaos crashes into one of her shows. Electricity from the Professor goes haywire, hitting the wanna be Rockstar. Stage lights, wires, amps, the screams of the crowd. It's all she hears before things go dark.

It's when she slams her nails across the metal strings, and it plays the perfect note; that it all clicks and makes sense.

》 Hologram uses a mix of short-range attacks mixed with long-range support moves. She is by no means an ally to anyone, however. Constantly playing both sides. She's a hero when it's convenient and fun, a bad guy when she thinks the tides are a little unfair. Her favorite thing to do is to get the crowd going! Order has no room in her life. It's all about the show!

○ First Move: Catch The Rift- Hologram pulls a cord on her trusty guitar, and in a straight line, enemies are staggered back by the sick rifts. (Causes enemies in a straight line, up to 3 spaces, to get knocked back. Causes confusion.)

○ Second Move: Amp Up- Hologram strums her guitar, and the music heals the soul, rejuvenating her allies. (Small AOE heal in a cross pattern from her location. Cures debuffs)

How Well She Plays With Others

Fastpass: Is her favorite hero, one of the only heroes in her eyes. Not only is he a true hero, but he's fun! He's so much fun! His speed makes every fight a challenge. Less a game of cat and mouse, and more like two lighting storms going at it. Flashy, hard to predict, charming. What's not to love?

"Fastpass! Can I get an autograph!? Wanna sign the guitar? Come ooooon buddy! Surely you have the time?"

Captain Diabetes: Her second favorite hero. This is the other true hero to Hologram! She knows that when it comes down to it, he will always do the right thing. Which means he's perfect for the show! Hologram often puts him in a predicament where he's forced to choose. Chase her or save the victims? Knowing him, he always chooses to save civilians. Hologram then makes a scene about it.

"Look at you! You'll do anything for these people! God, you're amazing! You're my favorite superstar!"

> Will never team-up with him, despite really wanting to.

> Loves getting him riled up, even though it's incredibly bad for her

> It's absolutely a game of cat and mouse with him

Toolshed: The fix it hero. He was the one who brought her to the hospital. The reason she can hear the music. The reason why the electricity hit her in the first place. If he hadn't dodged that attack. If he hadn't been there. Well, she wouldn't be the main event. He made her. So she owes it to him to make him a real hero! Hologram knows if she breaks it, he'll always fix it. Make it better! Like he did her!

He's a hero, sure, but he's not a real hero. Not yet. He's got some imperfections, little kinks that she's more than happy to work out! The day she knows she's won is when he acknowledges her as his arch-nemises.

"Look at me! You made me a star! You made me something! It's the least I can do for you, Toolshed! You need me to make you a hero!"

Human Kite: An alien? From the stars? How fucking rad is that!? At least Hologram thinks so. Her favorite thing to do is to knock him out of the sky. It's a game to her because, in actuality, no one flies higher than her. No one is ever allowed to make her look like a stage hand! She's the main event, and no one from this planet or the next is gonna take that from her! If he remembers that and stays out of her way, they can work together. She'll even let him play alongside her...if he's good.

"You never fucking learn, maybe you need another lesson. Call for backup, I want them to watch me knocking you outta my sky."

Professor Chaos: What a funny guy. What a perfect opener, like those small bands that open for the main event! He's got plans that are beyond her understanding, but they're fun! If they leave room for her and they don't get in the way of her goals, then he's fine! If the city starts to love Mysterion a little more because of him, though, she's gonna have some words for the Professor.

"Look Proff, I owe ya. You're part of the reason I'm like this...but lets not pretend you're the only one playing games. Some of us want a turn too."

Callgirl: The last and final true hero on her list. This woman can do no wrong in her eyes! This woman's presence both online and in person leave Hologram star-struck. She's the one person who's allowed to share a stage with her. If only the female hero could see that!

"You're her! You're Callgirl! I'm a huge fan! Can I write your theme song?"

> Will always team-up with her unless Toolshed is involved!

As for the others? She's not really concerned about them. They're small stuff. Boring. Or at least they haven't given her a reason to give a shit. Although, Wonder Tweek's lightning is fun. She loves the feeling of it, tastes like coffee for some reason?

Type Theory: Jill Warrick

As a person who thoroughly enjoys taking online personality quizzes and using them to develop OCs/write characters in fanfic I felt compelled to analyze Clive and Jill. Here is my take on Jill!

Disclaimers:

This is 100% not serious and just for fun. Please do not take it seriously.

I am not an expert at all.

Shout-out to the blog @mbti-notes which has so much information! If you are at all interested in type theory I highly recommend checking it out!

Jill is REALLY hard to type, IMO, because her environment has never fully allowed her to express herself to the fullest/live her best life. But there are still some clues that can help guide us.

1. Joshua’s inner voices

“She always makes me feel better” (child)

“She is the same gentle soul I remember” (adult)

This is significant because it’s speaking to her nature across a large span of time, so we can be confident that this is more intrinsic to her personality.

2. “You never were one to hide from the truth, even when we were young. And you haven’t changed a bit.”

This is another line that speaks to consistent & long-term personality traits. What might “someone who never hides from the truth” be like?

Doesn’t necessarily let feelings/biases cloud their judgement in the face of facts

Curious, inquisitive

It doesn’t matter here that Jill disagrees. Her disagreement is more likely a result of her trauma/poor self image. Clive is offering a more objective assessment, recalling what she was like as a child and still seeing these qualities in her.

3. The “date” in Northreach

Jill has the initial goal of trying the pies Molly recommended to her. And then she saw some bread, and it made her remember the bread she liked in Rosalith, which made her think maybe she should get some soup, but then she saw the butcher’s stand…

Jill seems like a pretty controlled and disciplined person, and this example is not really controlled or disciplined at all! It’s the equivalent of going to Target for mascara and toilet paper, and leaving with an entire bag full of things you didn’t intend to pick up. A really important point to remember here is that it’s one of the rare scenes in the game where she is fairly relaxed and happy, and in this state her mind is bouncing from idea to idea rather than having a specific plan and executing it.

4. “Where do you see us when this is over?”

In the “Priceless” sidequest Jill expresses her desire to travel the world and “spread her wings”. It’s a pretty open-ended and vague answer, but the sentiment of “spreading your wings” suggests a desire to explore, learn, experience new things, and get out of a situation that feels stifling and constricting.

It’s poignant here that she wants to go out and interact with the world rather than turn inward. She doesn’t want to settle down and lean into the things she already knows bring her comfort/happiness; she wants to explore.

5. Dynamic with Clive

My assessment of Clive is that he’s an INFP, and I think we can glean some insight about Jill from the way her and Clive support each other and pull each other out of their respective ruts.

Both when we meet Clive and when we see him at the Shadow Coast I believe that he is in an inferior Te grip. From @mbti-notes:

Fi dominants in an inferior Te grip will lose their natural caring and tolerant nature and instead obsess about truth or accuracy, becoming moody, irritable, combative, accusatory, or legalistic in their thinking. Focusing in on logical consequences, they might feel an urgent need to take action to correct perceived mistakes or prevent negative outcomes but ultimately fail because of hasty ill-conceived plans/actions. As a result, they might eventually turn this negativity or condemnation inwards and criticize themselves for being inadequate, incompetent, worthless, insensitive, or out of touch with their own core values. They might feel as though their entire life has amounted to nothing and all things might suddenly seem impossible/doubtful as they lose faith in their ability to stay true to themselves while still participating in the world.

Sound familiar? Yep.

The antidote to Te grip is via the auxiliary function, which for an INFP will be Ne (extroverted intuition). Ne tends to be exploratory, adventurous, optimistic, and open to possibilities. It is more interested in what could be than what is.

After King’s Falls, both Cid and Jill challenge Clive when he is lost in Te grip by encouraging him to explore and keep an open mind. And at the Shadow Coast, when Clive intimates he is losing his humanity through the use of his powers and the things he has done, Jill challenges him with optimism and by looking at what his power could be rather than what it is (or what he thinks it is).

This suggests that Jill–who seems to be open, exploratory, and adventurous–could have a strong tendency toward Ne.

Conversely, we see Clive help Jill out of her rut when she reveals how she feels she has become a monster and what she must do to atone.

If we consider Jill to be Ne dominant and exhibiting signs of being in a Si grip (which I think we do), we see (again from @mbti-notes):

They tend to lose touch with the world of possibilities and, instead, become pessimistic, withdrawn, inflexible, or obsessed about insignificant details. They might: suffer depression or despair, feel emotionally vulnerable and isolated and unappreciated, become unable to verbalize their thoughts or feelings, have difficulty finding pleasure in any activity, get highly irritable or pedantic or finicky, develop tunnel vision and hyperfocus on one task or detail, obsess about completing tasks and feel irrationally pressed for time, develop compulsive behavior in counting or organizing things, feel overwhelmed with trying to make every little detail perfect or relevant, desperately overanalyze past events/mistakes to find reasons/solutions for their present mood or use past events to justify a negative outlook of the future. The way out of a Si grip is via their auxiliary Fi, and Fi-dominant Clive immediately helps her do this. While he doesn’t see her the way she sees herself, he resonates and empathizes with her desire to live in a way that is consistent with her values and what she feels she needs to do to regain her integrity (“I faced my demons and you must face yours”).

Putting all of this together, the type that I think best fits Jill is:

ENFP!

Interacts with the external world to gather information, form possibilities, and find connections between things

More interested in what could be over what is

Uses emotional outcomes/impact as a guide for decision making

Prefers spontaneity over structure, desires freedom to explore possibilities

Jill as an ENFP: adaptable, adventurous, authentic, caring, compassionate, curious, empathetic, encouraging, future-oriented, independent, loyal, optimistic, passionate, perceptive, speculative, supportive, warm

Okay, but…

There is no way Jill could be an extrovert.

Consider extroversion not in terms of social interaction but in terms of a need to interact with the external environment. Jill is adventurous, open, and exploratory–she wants to be out experiencing the world rather than directing her energy inward.

Aren’t ENFPs [insert stereotype that Jill is not]?

Type theory describes cognition, or the way that a person collects information and processes it. It does not describe behavior, or the way a person acts in response to a given stimulus. A person’s behavior may be affected by their experiences/other external factors, whereas many argue that cognition stays the same.

Your conclusion hinges on Clive being an INFP/Fi-dominant and I disagree with that assessment.

I took a 16-personalities quiz for Jill and got something totally different.

This could be because of a few things:

Your characterization of her is different from mine, which is completely valid!

You were thinking in terms of behavior rather than cognition. We do not get a lot of insight as to what Jill might be like when she’s in an environment where she can be her best self, hence the need for some inferences/liberties that will account for some differences in how people characterize her.

There is variation among online quizzes.

Your interpretation/understanding of the functional stack is totally off.

That is entirely possible.

Personality indicators/type theory is pseudoscience snake oil and is completely meaningless.

Perhaps! I’m not an expert in the field. Regardless, I think they can be a good/fun way to get in a character’s head!

Live-Read: "Dofus Manga" - part 3

+ A big Atcham Analysis

I'll only briefly point out that he has an ear ring, or that Ancestral Z draws him with hair tufts for cuteness' sake. We have to keep moving towards the point where I analyse him.

Atcham seems to be quite famous, — to the point Dodge is chastised for not knowing him, despite being an ecaflip, — and one of his nicknames is "the killer of killers". Very, very interesting...

"You're the one who made a huge mistake, Katar, by stealing the sword I had taken to repair... It belonged to my family for generations."

Obsessed with all the implications this has. You have no idea just how obsessed I am. To Atcham, swords aren't just weapons, — they're objects of sentimental value, a way to protect himself, a tool.

And it turns out that Katar threw his, and I quote Katar, "piece of shit sword" to the moon.

We've discussed Atcham and Kerubim's dead family, lack of support system, and young age when they lost everything plenty here. Same for their irrational hatred for one another.

No need to tell you how awful this must feel for him. Imagine someone throwing your dead father's picture into the river. For fun.

"And the smith was a good friend of mine." Man :(

(He's either not that good at telling that someone is scared of him, which is sad, — or the smith that Katar killed was joking, when he said that he was afraid of Atcham.)

What follows is the most important scene I have for characterizing Atcham:

"The... the six Dofus. You have reunited the six Dofus! And what are you planning to do with them? Do you have an idea already?" "They intend to defeat Cornu Mollu."

If I speak on Cornu Mollu, this post will devolve into a 5-hour lecture on how much I hate the Twelve gods, — how Oropo "Did Nothing Wrong", — and how Sadida, Iop, and Ecaflip in particular need to be [VIOLENT LANGUAGE OMITTED] for the things they have done. Let's just say that he's a demon guy who rules Brakmar at the time of manga, ok?

"You guys are comedians. PHAHAHA! The guy is stronger than a god... And your Dofus can't change that! And his armies have only continued to expand — they're invincible."

Atcham laughs them out of town like clowns for thinking they can defeat Cornu Mollu. Which is more than understandable. But it is interesting, how he speaks of Brakmar here... Not very patriotic, he.

"I wish you courage in your collective suicide. As for me, I'm going to find myself a little island, hoping to escape all this!"

The thing about Atcham, is that mostly, he just cares about himself, and the things he likes.

He doesn't care about the city he's in, — outside the fact that his brother is on the opposing side. He doesn't care about the world, or saving it, — because the world certainly hasn't cared about him!

And he WILL flee, if it saves his skin from any unnecessary pain or danger.

What he cares about is his own damn self, because nobody else is going to.

For this reason, his personal moral compass is entirely dependent on saving his own skin, because he has only ever had himself to rely upon. He tries not to be too cruel, — yet, if the mood strikes him, he becomes hyperviolent just for the sake of fun.

But the thing about him is that he will leave, if things aren't going well. He won't stay.

This includes fleeing Brakmar at the first sight of trouble. And chances are, it also has, multiple times, included Joris and Kerubim after the movie.

While I will go more in detail on this later, sometime after Leorictus's nightmare reign and Joris's huppermage horror beyond our comprehension, Atcham has left Kerubim and Joris to return to Brakmar's side.

As far as I am aware, it is not because of some deep falling out, — they still seem to love one another. Kerubim has an instance of mentioning Atcham, in a pretty teasing manner, — and in the quest that involves catching him for his crimes, Kerubim comes to bail him out with a defense attorney speech at the ready to explain away why the atrocities are both a misunderstanding and completely justified, — but the thing is that Atcham left them, and began doing weird stuff, like crimes. In Kerubim's own Ecaflipus temple.

My personal thought is that Atcham keeps leaving because he's scared.

He cares a lot, — because they're the first people to ever care about him, and it drives him crazy how little they care for themselves. It hurts seeing them in pain.

Leorictus's reign probably was hard, emotionally speaking, — Joris wasn't even legally allowed to live in Bonta, or anywhere else, as a huppermage, — and yet, in Dofus MMO, judging from NPC dialogue about how Kerubim only moved back to Astrub somewhat recently,

— and Joris's presence in the game before the implementation of Huppermages as a class (I.E. their return from Rok Island), all signs point to the fact that this whole time, as Huppermages fled to Rok Island, — The Trio stayed in Bonta despite the danger, for some insane fucking reason. Probably heroism. Probably trying to save people. (people who have read my fic Fragile will uhh. Recognize this premise. Yeah. I think a lot about this all. To the point of writing a fic about this insane era of their lives.)

I think Atcham hates how responsible he feels for them, and the batshit insane things, — heroism? saving the world?! helping other people?!? self-sacrifice!?!? — they make him want to believe in, and how afraid he is of losing them. It is for him, to agree to do things he would never do before, for them, — and it's scary, just as scary as how dependent he is now, despite being ok with loneliness before them.

And sometimes, it's just too much, and too fast. So, he leaves, again, and again.

But on a positive note, I want to believe he is mostly over leaving them whenever he gets too stressed out, by Wakfu times. Maybe it's the maturity that comes with age, — or realizing how much they need him after Ogrest's Chaos, but I want to believe that he now expresses his frustration in other, more productive ways: herding these two idiots away from danger.

Ranging from: subtly insisting that Joris doesn't go on insane suicide missions all alone just to protect them (Just like Atcham, Joris's anxiety for his family makes him very irrational at times.), and trying to get Kerubim to always be ready for battles, while protecting him because he isn't,

To just plain having the willpower to tell the world's most stupidly self-sacrificial man "Did you consider that the floating eyes in the sky aren't any of our business? :)"

Which is pretty funny.

Anyway, yeah, Joris is not surviving the things Kerubim and Atcham will do to him, after he tells them that he went to something called "The Necroworld", almost got trapped there, and then almost died 20 times.

Hello!! I really love your writing! I like the way you write interactions between characters and how well you maintain their personalities! Sometimes, after I read these, I need to take a few moments to realize that they are not actually canon. (For me, they still are <3).

If it's not a bother, I would like to request Compliment + Yuno and any other character that you think will fit well!

Because of Yuno's past work, I always thought that the compliments her clients would give didn't truly mean much to her. At first, maybe these words gave her some warmth, but with time, she realized that these words were nothing more than superficial. And I think it would be nice to see Yuno actually being happy with the sincerity of a compliment addressed to her!

I have been very normal about this ;__;✨ And thank you for the request, I absolutely love that concept -- it's perfect for Yuno! I think between being so used to shallow/physical compliments combined with the fact that she has a lot of self-love already, a new type of compliment could really affect her. I debated on a few characters, but ended up setting this late T1 with Kotoko

Yuno was always complimented on her smile. It was beautiful, she was told. It was pure. Sweet. Innocent. Her lipstick looked nice. Her lips in general looked nice. She was just so… nice. Yuno was glad to have such a bright smile; it hid how much she was wanted to pick up the cards from her solitaire game and throw them as hard as she could at Shidou's face.

“Don’t worry, when you get to be my age, you’ll understand,” he was saying. “But I do love your optimism…”

She stretched that smile as far as it would reach. Shidou kept talking as he stood to leave, and she answered as politely and simply as possible. Once out of sight, she allowed herself a single, dramatic eyeroll. Everyone older than her thought they knew more than her. Men always thought they knew more than her. 

But she wasn’t about to let it ruin the rest of her day. She turned her attention back to the cards, already working to forget the whole conversation. She’d nearly lost herself in new thoughts when a voice startled her at the end of the table.

“You’re strong, Yuno.”

She looked up to find Kotoko staring. She smirked at the comment -- she knew she had nothing on someone like her. The woman exuded strength, and had made more than one comment about the other prisoners’ physical fitness. Yuno flexed her right arm. “I didn’t do very well in the tournament, but thanks, I guess!”

Confusion flashed over her face. “No, not the arm wrestling thing we did the other day.”

“Oh, when we all jumped rope after dinner last week?”

“No, no. I mean… as a person.” Kotoko scooted closer. She always had a calculating look on her face, studying everyone around her. Yuno had expected to feel uncomfortable under such a gaze, (many of the other prisoners had voiced the sentiment,) but there was something almost pleasant about the way Kotoko stared. Yuno couldn’t put her finger on it.

She waved her hand dismissively. She knew the best way to accept praise was to play it down, just a bit. “Eh, sometimes it's gotta be like that, you know? I just do what I can to make it through the day, I wouldn't call that strong or anything…”

“Well I would.” Her gaze was level. “I think the way you handle everyone, never compromising on your own values, is very impressive. I’ve seen the way the others talk to you here. I can only imagine, with the line of work you’re in, what utter scumbags you’ve had to deal with on a daily basis. And yet,” she tipped her head, and Yuno suddenly understood. Kotoko looked at people as if she actually saw them. “You’ve never once raised your voice. Or scowled. Or even cried. Being sent to a place like this, after what you’ve done, it’d be enough to infuriate anyone.”

She surveyed the room, adding, “I'm still figuring this place out, but I can tell it's designed to break us. Which is why we need to stay strong. I just wanted to tell you, from one woman to another -- I'm glad to have someone like you fighting with me.”

Yuno’s smile had faded to surprise. At that moment, she did something that she hadn’t in an awfully long time. 

She blushed at the compliment. 

Maybe it was the way Kotoko said it. She wasn't the type of person to say anything she didn't mean. Maybe it was the fact that it was something new, not another comment about her lips or her laugh or her body. Or maybe it was because Yuno was tempted to believe it.

She’d heard so many voices lately, whispering how weak and helpless she must be to end up in this whole mess. The other prisoners, too, treated her according to her small build and unbroken nails. She suddenly realized how close she’d come to falling into the same mindset.

Getting a hold of herself, she made her voice light. “Well, I'd say the same to you, but I think you already know that, heh. But… thanks for saying all that.”

“Of course.” Kotoko’s smile was neither sweet nor innocent, but it was certainly honest. “I mean it.”

Yuno nodded. “I know.”

Hello my dear! Thank you so so much for requesting this ship, it was an absolute pleasure to do this for you. You just seem like an absolute sweetheart and you deserve the entire world, this may not be the world but I hope this suffices <3.

Prefacing this ship by saying I'm so passionate about shipping you with Seonghwa. I was scratching the surface about how sweet you were, but I must emphasize how sweet you are. Even though you are very reserved and a bit cold, you were correct in the fact that others see it as more of a peaceful aura. You remind me of Hongjoong but lacking the harsh and bold mannerisms that he possesses. In a way shipping you with Seonghwa is just appealing to his needs too. See it like this, we all know how much love he has for Hongjoong right?

Then it’s a no brainer that he would fall hook line and sinker for someone who demonstrates such gentle tendencies despite seeming a little intimidating, he loves the idea of someone having strength in areas where he himself is reserved and displays a strong parental streak. He knows you aren’t Hongjoong and he doesn't expect you to be him either, he just feels like he has found another person who he can relax around. Not long after meeting Seonghwa you would have gotten the full, uncensored version of him, the cuddly, sentimental side.

I’ve painted a picture wherein Seonghwa is the only one feeling those heavy feels but that is not the case. Even if you don’t necessarily voice how you’re feeling, especially in the early days of your relationship, he can pretty much confirm that you are in love with him by the way you speak to him. Oh my god this really gets Seonghwa going, the fact that you treat him so gently even though you seem quite intimidating and serious. In short Seonghwa falls on the ‘see’s-you-as-a-warm-peaceful-hug’ side of the spectrum. Even though Seonghwa has his silly haha joking moments both of you have such a peaceful and pleasant relationship. Many things contribute to the calm, collected nature of your relationship but something that really sets the scene is the mass amounts of respect that you have for one another. I know this sounds really domestic and serious but it’s actually quite beautiful, see it this way: Seonghwa has many people in his life who prefer silence to recharge or just escape from it all, the number one contender being Hongjoong, which means Seonghwa knows how to aid in creating a quiet place where you can sit in silence and when you’re ready you can come back and rest your head on his lap as you watch tv. Seonghwa really does treat you like his treasure during these moments.

 And this is where it gets sappy. You hold so much in your heart; you may think that your just your average person going through life, but to Seonghwa you are far from average. For one you have such pure intentions in life, most of what you do is intended to have a resounding affect on other people, you want people to find safety and happiness in what you create for them. Seonghwa can’t help but admire you for even having such values, you really are so deep and genuinely kind, and he feels so proud of himself for being able to live up to your standards. The reality of the matter is that you are everything Seonghwa dreams about and he is actually a little scared of not being enough for you, but you prove him wrong time and time again.

It's all of the small things with him, dancing together, watching documentaries with you, painting with you (even though he winds up with more paint on his sleeves than anywhere else), yet it doesn’t feel small to him. Your relationship matters so much to him, and he wants to protect it, protect you. So as he holds you and glides his fingers across your tattoos he reminds himself that he has found his soulmate. I think there's different ways to look at it and depending on the narrative aspect that appeals to you, you can pick your option. Each has its own merits and demerits and different impact points and narrative values.

1. As @sashaforthewin stated above the comics folks didn't know about pearls and jewellery and went with what they felt was a dramatic scene. Absolutely fine, it is fiction afterall and sometimes facts need a little bending to give the dramatic impact you need.

2. (I'd seen someone else mention the next two points in a different post elsewhere and cannot for the life of me find it currently. If someone knows or finds it or if I find it I'll come back and give credit) Thomas had bought the fake pearls at a point when all of the Wayne money and fortune had been at an all time low and they'd had to sell off all the authentic pieces. He'd known Martha loved those original pearls and gotten her the fake set as a promise of a better future and for her to have something to wear that she enjoyed in the meantime. When the Wayne fortune swung back she did get the original set back, but Martha still enjoyed the fakes Thomas had gotten her because of sentimentality and love. (Yes I know the Waynes are old money - the oldest in Gotham - but I think old money families also have their ups and downs too it just doesn't get talked about unless there's more to the story)

3. It wasn't actually pearls that scattered, but bone and teeth fragments from Martha's body when she got shot. Bruce's traumatized mind swapped the image of the teeth and bone with pearls. That's what he mentions and remembers anytime someone asked him about it. The cops - specifically Gordon - didn't see why they should further traumatize the child so they let the story of the pearls spread instead of saying that most of Martha Wayne's face had disintegrated with the bullet.

4. Bruce had painstakingly collected his allowance and gone to buy Martha a gift for either mother's day or a birthday or something. He didn't realise that what he'd bought were fake pearls but she loved them and wore them most chances she got.

Lowkey why she was a...not a bad leader, but she cares too much about them individually to every truly think of them as a group and do what must be done for the good of the group vs the good of the individuals. That's why she never set Shauna straight and so on. I'm coming off as a communist now, but they need to work and think as a group, which is Misty's forte, not Natalie's who values human life too much and individuality.

God I have anxiety so bad from watching this

My stomach feels like a pit

I thought I was going to be edged with the crying but then we go from Nat to Misty, and the way she... when she removed the shackles so he could be free, at least in death, man I couldn't hold back the tears, that was a watershed moment, the waterworks started and they would not stop, say what you want about Misty, about whatever, but there was love there for Ben, not just as another survivor, he really did mean something to her. Maybe not sexual or romantic, and I know it doesn't seem that way because she kissed him, and I'm sure I'll see a thousand posts about it being creepy and I don't care, grief makes you do a lot of dumb shit, but fuck she's just a kid and she's doing her best, just like Natalie, and coach had no fucking right to ask that of her. I don't blame her, and I don't blame Misty for wanting to keep him alive, and it's not just for the group, or for herself, she really loved him, and maybe it's selfish to want someone to live as long as they can because you love them, when they don't want to, but so is ending their life. There's no real right or wrong in this situation, there's no more mercy in killing him than in letting him live. Years from now, post rescue, he might have been happy to be alive, and likewise, he might not, nobody knows what the right and wrong decision to make here is, and I just know I'm gonna see some really fucking stupid takes on this, and going meta for a moment, this fandom and raw sewage are indistinguishable sometimes but if I see a single person making fun of Misty for the way she mourned, or judging her or playing at moral superiority and making claims about who was right and who was wrong, and how x or y is evil for wanting this and that? I'm gonna be pissed.

I know people are gonna bring shipping into this too, and like be all Lottie and Nat win and crap and not see the nuance here either, I'm preparing for that as well. I have zero faith in this fandom.

I think Misty's feeling slighted by Natalie but still I notice she wanted to go the trial route. She didn't think it fair she goes unpunished but she didn't think it fair that she gets straight up executed either. You can see her fuming in the back when Shauna implies they should straight up kill her. You can see that while she thinks she should be punished, she doesn't want her to die, and she's conflicted.

Lottie did come in clutch, jumping in at the right moment to appease Shauna and spare Natalie's life. Taissa trying to incite a trial to at least stall and get a chance to help her out too. Would be funny if Lottie was just walking around delivering checks all that day. This plot reminds me of Emily's missing night in Pretty little liars. Where they'd find one character who'd link them to another and so on. And ultimately it turned out to be something benign, Emily, wasted, walking to Paige's to kiss her and sleepwalking away.

Page #3 - Fourth Year, Second Sem, End of Reading Week

I think I have carpal tunnel. My wrist has been hurting a lot this past week, and at first I thought it was just because I slept on it wrong (likely a symptom of being on my living room couch, something I’ve been doing to ensure that I don’t sleep in). But it's very probable that despite feeling like I haven't been doing much, the constant strain of crafting and lack of real rest means my body is started to reflect the stress my brain is under.

Reading week is basically over and I’m tryna catch up on my relaxation by speedrunning all the Youtube videos I missed out on, painting my nails, but I'm still losing sleep. I always feel like there’s never enough time in a day to do all the things I want. I did go to Zumba class (something my mom, sister, and I used to do at our gym) for the first time in almost a year. I find myself in this cycle of doing a small thing and feeling closer to my ideal self: someone whose nails are always painted, journals everyday (and not just to air grievances), goes to the gym but isn’t obnoxious about it, etc. I keep telling myself that I’ll have all this time to be who I think I am or supposed to be once I graduate, but I wish it was something I could start now instead of rearranging the world… waiting for the right circumstances.

I did my general meeting on Thursday (same day as Zumba, go productive me!), and it made me think a lot about Toronto. I grew up here in Scarborough but always felt conflicted whenever I thought about moving downtown, as if I'd be giving in to gentrification by living in a (new) overpriced apartment. The city isn’t evil though, and I think if I found my place in it I could be closer to all the workshops I wanna take, jobs I wanna apply to, and food I wanna eat. 

Sometimes I feel like I'm thinking too much about myself when I reflect. For that reason, I'm trying to talk more about outside sources like tv shows, movies, and books, but they always lead to thinking about how certain circumstances apply to my own life. I was hoping by now to finish the last thing I was reading, which was a collection of letters from Mary Shelley that provide a lot of introspection on her relationships. I may be a little late for Valentines, but I’ve been feeling very sentimental lately. I saw two of my best friends on Saturday, and after they walked me home we stayed on call for another 6 hours. It wasn’t all fun, since the motive behind our conversation was to figure out a disagreement with another one of our friends (someone I saw just earlier that week). I don’t know how to slow down what feels like the inevitable distance time wedges between friendships. It doesn’t even have to be a fight, uncompromising schedules, or greater difference in values, but just the fact that we stopped being completely open with each other. My friend brought up a great point that when we were young, we weren't too concerned about how our actions affected the people around us. We didn't spiral about how reaching out to a friend about your struggles might be a burden on their busy lives, or derail their own train of thought. When I opened up about how I think about these things too, that I assume that it's a chore for them to listen to me, her expression made me realize that by withholding my anxieties I also made her feel isolated. She let out a sigh of frustration and did a half laugh about something I'll never forget, "Why didn't we just tell each other this in the first place."

Confrontations with friends can feel so hard that the anticipation makes me wanna avoid them entirely. But when it's over, and you guys can move on with these considerations in mind, the feeling of having overcome that is a thousand times better than whatever silly thing it was before.

Blog Post #3

For this week’s blog post I would mainly like to talk about Wet Pain by Terence Taylor because I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I don’t know if I would say it’s my favorite story we have gone over in this class, but it is definitely up there. Truthfully, in the beginning I had not even planned on reading it and was just going to go watch the lecture that Professor Due had done on it, but in the end I decided it was going to be a quick enough read to just do it. I think the thing that really ended up sticking with me was the pit that I felt in my stomach for most of the read. I felt more uneasy reading this story than I had felt for any other material we have gone over this quarter so I have to applaud Taylor for that. After a bit of thought, there were three things that I think mainly contributed to that uneasiness. The first of which comes from our main character and narrator Greg. Greg is explicitly described in the reading as being both black and queer, this opens up the character to being extremely vulnerable to the outside world. Racism and homophobia runs rampant around the world and for someone to have to deal with both of them at the same time is a very tough task. What makes it worse is some are never able to find that safe space. Homophobia is a big issue in the black community and subtle racism can always find its way into the queer community, Greg even having to deal with this from a man he met at the club. Greg being vulnerable to all of these aggressions raises the stakes on what can happen. Another contributing factor is Dean’s descent into madness. In the beginning Dean is pretty much described as “one of the good ones”, in that he is completely blind to his differences with Greg which contributes to their friendship. In an early scene he calls himself colorblind which is a statement that I have always hated because I think it is important to value our differences (this sentiment is shared by another character in the story which I was excited to see). When Dean started his descent into his “illness”, the racism seemed pretty deep from the very first time it appeared. This caused me to question just how far the racism was going to go as we progressed over time. The scariest part about Dean’s descent though was the fact that we never actually saw his setting/point of view for the whole story. The entire story was told from Greg’s perspective so anything that was happening to Dean and the things that he was doing when he wasn’t talking to Greg was a complete mystery. Our imaginations are left to imagine the horrors that are going on. The last factor that made the story what it was, was the setting. A subplot of the reading was that Hurricane Katrina was slowly making its way towards New Orleans which is where Dean’s house was located. The readers know that Katrina devastated New Orleans when it happened which keeps us concerned for Dean’s family for the whole story. Terence Taylor uses Katrina as a metaphor for the darkness clouding in Dean’s mind. As the stormfront makes its way to New Orleans, Dean’s racism and alcoholism is progressively getting worse and worse. It is a boiling point that the reader knows Dean will reach at some point and all we can do is sit and wait. I think this was a very intelligently written story and I am very thankful I took the time to sit down and read it.
