Quick thought on Barbara Gordon's role in the new Birds of Prey...
Spoilers for Birds of Prey (2023-) #7
....
Okay so; I am really, really happy that they actually told Barbara about the situation and what was going on this time. After the ending of the #6 I was kinda afraid they were going to do something like keep Babs in the dark while they chose the "Secret Barbara Gordon Defence Squad" route, so I have to say it was quite the relief when they instead went "Work with Oracle to solve this mystery" route.
I guess this fear was mostly due to how they excluded Barbara from the first arc, and kept her entirely in the dark about even the existence of the mission. And then at the end of #6 they made a point of showing that Barbara was indeed hurt by this and they only revealed the reasons after Barbara had already left the roof.
So it was nice to have Barbara immediately get brought into the loop. I've complained a bit about the first arc of this run; and I suppose the heart of my personal issues with it was I felt it was all a tad contrived, between excluding Barbara and having a hero vs hero conflict with the Amazons.
But in #7 not only is Barbara informed of the situation, but she's working alongside Dinah and also acting as Oracle.
Between all of the dead alternate Barbaras being shown wearing their Batgirl outfits and Barbara being dressed as Batgirl in the cover of #7, it was a pleasant surprise to find that Barbara was indeed taking the lead as Oracle instead Batgirl. In fact despite the cover art, she doesn't even use her Batgirl outfit in #7.
Still feel like they should've just told Babs all the way back in #1 and had her take the lead as Oracle back then, but I digress.
With contrived conflict and lack of communication being the main thing which I felt distracted my enjoyment of the first arc, the fact that this new arc is getting kicked off with significantly less of that has made me really enjoy #7 and am looking forward to more.

01/27/2024 - Morgan Yu
Prey (2017) is a phenomenal game in my eyes. It has a great set of tools at your disposal that it allows various creative solutions to problems. From using recycler charges to overcome an enemy, turning into a small object to fit into a small gap to simply using the simple ol’ firepower of a shotgun. The game really gets you to connect things together and try out unconventional methods.
Aside from that, its story is likewise in the same quality as its gameplay. The standout for me was the crew quarters’ story which had a lot of stories about the various crew aboard Talos I and one of the sweetest relationships I have encountered.
Overall, this game is perducci-approved!

THE LURE (2015)
A weird little Polish musical horror film that very loosely follows the original plot of the little mermaid but more gruesome and much more tragic. As horror movies go it wasn’t very scary, but gory and moody (and incredibly artistic). You feel more compassion for the murderous creatures than the human victims (it was just in their nature for the sirens to hunt, but what were the humans doing?).
⭐⭐⭐.5
THE LURE is a Polish musical horror about two mermaids that get scooped up by some crazy rockers who think they can handle two actual sirens (they cannot). We follow Silver and Golden as they traverse the land and deal with these selfish humans (who can all be controlled by the girls' shimmery voices). There appears to be a general knowledge of mermaids/sirens in this universe because their existence is not kept a secret, in fact, it is a gimmick at the club in their stripping act when they first arrive (it’s only after they establish themselves more that they can keep their legs and clothes on). It should be pointed out too that the girls are sort of like an eel-type of siren, their tails have no big fin at the end, but are still a sight to behold when they are transformed.
Now, in the first few minutes our girls try to lure the two men in the band to a watery death but are caught by the female singer, so it is already well established from the get go that these two are (would-be) man eaters. Why anyone would think they could control these wildcards from the deep is beyond me, they can literally control you with a song for goodness sake! The humans look at these mystical girls with money in their eyes (or any other excuse to use the poor things) and are ready to take advantage of these seemingly innocent creatures. Except for Golden, Golden has a lot on her mind and it is mostly blood and murder. This is her nature though, we cannot really fault her for being a creature of nature. There is a part where the band finds out one of the girls killed someone so they just dump both of them in the water and leave them for dead… But they are able to get back out and get over that (mostly, 👍 ( wait)).
Silver has fallen head over tail for the shaggy haired boy who will fuck anything that, well, doesn’t have a tail, and he promptly informs her that he only sees her as a fish. She uses her siren song on him to change his mind for the moment (let’s see how long this lasts) before making the choice to get her tail surgically removed and swapped for regular legs. This is apparently a surgery that the doctors are more than prepared to do (??), keeping both girls alive while sawed completely in half (neat magic trick). Silver loses her voice because of this trade but is excited to show her shaggy headed slut. Surprise! He wants something a little less complicated (like a regular human female and not a mute half-fish lady). This breaks Silver's heart and as we all know, when you break a mermaid's heart they turn to seafoam if they don’t eat you, so Golden encourages Silver to eat him… But Silver is too sweet. She turns to seafoam in his arms…
And Golden, in her sadness and rage, goes for his throat. The reception is shocked, two people are gone (though most will only ever miss the groom) and Golden returns to the water, alone. Where she will be, alone, for ages and rages because she is a mystical being and her only friend is gone. A tragedy on all sides really. If anyone understood the other person's nature in this film maybe things would have turned out differently, but they all chose to ignore what they wanted to ignore.

Bioshock Review: This game broke my heart.
Alright, here's my take on Bioshock. It sucks.
After finally wrapping up Bioshock, I can't help but feel it doesn't quite live up to its reputation for brilliance. I went in expecting a narrative masterpiece, but what I got felt more like a recycled version of Half-Life.
For a title hailed as an immersive sim, it fails to deliver. Instead of offering rich, expansive environments, it confines players to linear pathways that feel like they're holding your hand a bit too tightly. It's almost insulting, really.
Sure, Talos I in Prey may have lacked a bit of life, but it felt more organic and open compared to the claustrophobic shooting galleries of Bioshock.
Bioshock garnered heaps of praise, but in reality, it's just a run-of-the-mill FPS with a sprinkle of elemental powers. The storyline is average at best, and the ending? Predictable from a mile away.
But the real deal-breaker for me is the gameplay. It's just so… dull. I've had more fun with shooters from the '90s than this. Enemy variety is lacking, and the constant feeling of confinement in the environment is suffocating (at least, from what I gathered in the few hours I played).
The level design, while aesthetically pleasing, boils down to lengthy corridors leading to open spaces filled with either big daddies or regular enemies, only to repeat the cycle again and again.
In contrast, Prey (2017) really challenges you to think outside the box, to strategize and adapt. Bioshock, on the other hand, seems content to spoon-feed you every step of the way, which, frankly, feels like an insult to the player's intelligence.

Quick Recs! - Birds of Prey #1 - 3
Featuring a team-up of Black Canary, Batgirl, Big Barda, Harley Quinn, and Zealot, Birds of Prey issues #1 - 3 are an absolute blast.
Having come into these books with little-to-no knowledge of most of the cast, I can assure you that no prior knowledge is necessary to enjoy this run. Every member of the team is charismatic, the writing is a joy to read, and the mission - Black Canary trying to save her adopted sister from the Amazons - is easy to jump into.
The art in these books is fantastic and offers a very classic feel. Alongside the vibrant and bombastic colors, some of the page and panel layouts are just an absolute joy to look at.
At the end of the day, Birds of Prey issues #1 - 3 present readers with a bunch of gals being pals and kicking butt. What more could you really need?
(P.S. There's also a little cameo from Constantine - who I love - so that's a plus!)

I just watched Prey again, I love this movie so fricken much, but it definitely has some problems I wish I can just ignore. Again no hate just stating some plot holes.
Each character that ate the orange totsiyaa were so cold they can barely move. Although both were in horrible condition, you would think Naru would at least show some symptoms after eating the flower.
This literally made me angry because you’d think feral pred would know how his own equipment worked. He literally died by his own hand, but why did he fire if he knew that shooting the gun will only hit wherever the helmet was aiming? Or did he not know because he tried to shoot at Sarii three times? I also find it stupid that this gun is unable to shoot manually. It must have been a prototype and they changed it up after this.
Look Arnold took an entire afternoon to set up all the traps, Naru was seen sharpening sticks for one of her traps literally right after she shot the pred in the head. This may be nit picky but it was very convenient that Naru knew the exact path that the pred would take or that he would use the trees. Either way it would be nice if it was implied that she sharpened sticks before.
Everyone who has fought a predator barely came out alive, Naru did leave injured, but she literally took a bear trap to the shin. Bear traps can break bones, but Naru takes it like a champ, not even limping.
Anyways that’s all I had to say about the movie. Overall I love this movie so much it’s so good, I just wanted to list these problems.
If you actually read all this thank you for coming to my Ted talk :>

just watched The Strangers cuz ive heard so many people rave about it and man.....
it was shit! one of the most boring horror movies i have ever fucking watched. the woman (i dont even remember their names) had the most obnoxious voice and was a total stupid horror movie cliché. the whole movie was. i ended up falling asleep towards the end cuz i was so fucking bored. went back to watch the ending, shoulda stayed asleep 😒
i did however watch the "sequel" (honestly a whole different movie and thank fuck.) i REALLY liked it. at first i was totally turned off from it already (mainly Kinsley. such a teenage stereotype) but it got so much better as it progressed. the bathroom scene really got me and the one with kinsley in the tunnel? shat my pants. the pool scene was totally kickass too. finally get to see those fuckers get it. got kinda thrown off with the way Sackhead (whats his name???) had to die like 3 times. (the fire with Kinsley walking away was pretty cool......coulda left it there.) but still a great movie. especially the ending with Kinsley in the hospital as (presumably) a nurse knocks on the door and she gets all freaked out.
but yeah watch The Strangers: Prey at Night and dont let reddit movie bros try and tell you the first is in any way good.
#nobody will read this post but oh well#the strangers#the strangers prey at night#movie review#movie rant#spoilers

Movie Night!
I'm working my way through a couple of movie viewing lists, one of which is all the Alien and Predator movies in chronological order. So, I'm kicking off this list with the movie, Prey.
The Hunt Begins
Naru, a skilled warrior of the Comanche Nation, fights to protect her tribe against one of the first highly-evolved Predators to land on Earth.
Prey, the most recent Predator movie released to date, but the first in chronological order of the Predator movies, and one of the great things about it is that it doesn't suffer from the prequel curse. Where so many prequel movies fail or fall short, Prey manages to not only stand firm on its own feet, but also as a solid addition to the Predator franchise.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thoughts of Birds of Prey (2023-) #6
Spoilers for Birds of Prey (2023-) #6
So the newest issue of the current Birds of Prey comic has recently come out and I guess since I took the time to make multiple fairly long-ish posts about this run, I should go over my thoughts here.
To sum things up... I thought it okay but also not really too big of a fan by the end of it. I didn't exactly dislike it, but I guess it left me with too many questions and felt a bit too contrived. It was enjoyable enough, but kinda felt like my enjoy-ness of it decreased with each subsequent issue. It wasn't bad, but I guess that's my knee-jerk fresh reaction.
Of course, it still possible that there is more to the story than there is now and that future issues will reveal new information which might clear up some of my issues more, I'll be discussing that as well...
Note again that I am a novice in comics, and Gotham Academy was one of the first I read fully so perhaps I'm biased in that area. But to go over my thoughts for why I kinda feel slightly disappointed in more detail...
What was the point of Meridian?
Warning of future doom, apparently. So as it turns out, the real reason that Barbara wasn't include was because she died eleven times already
(the fact that this was far from Meridian's first attempt was foreshadowed last issue with her noting where the last battle "always is"). So someone is out to get the Birds of Prey, and they're possibly using Future Maps time travel tech to do it.
While this does somewhat answer the question of why Barbara was specifically excluded; still doesn't explain the secrecy.
Like, all these visions of Barbara dying have her in her Batgirl outfit, so couldn't she just have been informed she'd die and asked to oversee the mission as Oracle? Or does that also somehow lead to her death?
Being kept in the loop would also presumably have greatly helped avoid awkward feelings like this. And from what I know of Barbara, her tactical mind is probably more valuable than her martial art skills. But I guess whatever evil time traveller is targeting the BoP would've found a way to get to Babs anyway? (also on a side note; Barbara getting hurt by not being included was at least one thing I kinda predicted. My other, more thougt-out predictions though... well I'll get to those in a bit)
It also confirms that Dinah indeed did not apparently get any explanation for why she had to exclude Barbara until after the mission was complete and.... that feels weird?
Like I said, I'm a novice on comics (although I am now definitely adding more Birds of Prey stuff to my to-read list) so I'm not the biggest expert on these characters. Nevertheless it feels that Black Canary here would've agreed to attack Wonder Woman and her people while excluding Oracle all on the word of a time traveller she's likely never met before (and in the present is a teenager who she's likely never met before either) without even demanding a damn good explanation first.
I guess it was more dramatic from a story perspective for Meridian to reveal this stuff now and set up the next arc. But it still just feels contrived to me. Maybe I'm overlooking/overthinking something though?
Meridian's Motives
So I've gone over a theory before that Meridian was in fact evil and possibly even connected to Megaera. That theory was not confirmed, or overly supported, by this. And it does seem like Meridian is probably on the up-and-up.
Perhaps I'm a tad biased/sunk-cost fallacy right now since I spent a decent amount of time on the theory of Meridian being evil, but still worth noting that this mission ended up Megaera possessing Sin, albeit with Sin in control (and presumably actually in control because Megaera said Sin was in control while Sin used the lasso on her).
There's still quite a few similarities between Meridian and Megaera which are a bit difficult to overlook (you can check out the link I placed above where i went into more detail into that).
Its worth noting as well that Meridian mentioned that whichever evil time traveller is targeting the BoP, they're using her technology most likely. An interesting detail, and one which raises q
Could it be Meridian is hiding something still? All the information we know about the future and her motives comes from her after all.
Or could it be she's being controlled without her knowledge? Or a second Meridian is up and about?
Perhaps it seems like I'm still focusing a disproportionate amount on Meridian, but she still remains the driving force behind all this issues of the narrative which have somewhat hurt my enjoyment and given me questions.
And to repeat what I've said before. Meridian seems like a strange direction for the character of Maps Mizoguchi.
As I've alluded to before, I'm probably quite biased in this area because I've read Gotham Academy years ago before I really got into comics like I have recently and it was one of the first runs I've finished and stuff.
Maps is a character who wants to be Robin. And that's the path which she seems to have been developed upon during her fairly recent return.
Given how still early she is in her storyline of becoming Robin (or some other kind of vigilante) it just still feels like a strange choice for Maps Mizoguchi of all people to show up as a time traveling hero with a persona and skillset which seems in stark contrast to her every prior appearance.
Meridian does not appear to be a martial artist, Maps doesn't appear to be a tech genius. Magic would seem like a more likely 'superpower' than super-tech for Maps considering the more supernatural focus of Gotham Academy.
Maps has been established with a preference for swords while Meridian is only shown fighting using a fancy taser.
Am I thinking too deeply into it? Probably, yes.
But still feels like an overall strange decision to introduce Future Maps in such a manner. Especially when Present Maps has only returned to semi-focus in recent years and still hasn't really developed too much in her own current goals (such as being Robin).
So taking a character who's still in need of a bit more focus and development and then giving them a future persona which is at contrast to their current development chain? Seems odd.
Also at first i just assumed Meridian comes from a post-apocalyptic future which would be retconned out of the timeline by this arc. But Meridian's comments about how she doesn't take time travel lightly and is trying to right the timeline suggests she does not in fact come from a post-apocalyptic timeline.
So does that mean Maps is destined to become Meriden?
Again, this is probably my bias due to Gotham Academy nostalgia. But I'm not sure if I'm too much of a fan of this direction for her.
Especially, as I keep noting, Present Maps has only barely gotten started on working on becoming Robin (or any-kind of vigilante); but Meridian seems to suggest Maps is going to drop her current direction and go in a completely different direction at some point in the future.
Well those of my thoughts I guess. I suppose I'll see how things develop from here.
While I did find the Birds of Prey quite well-drawn so far and fairly enjoyable. All this thoughts I've gone over and the general feeling this arc was a tad contrived has all somewhat mitigated my enjoyment.

Book Blurb:
Prey for Rabbit is an enemies-to-lovers PNR novella featuring a brutal werewolf and his reluctant bunny-shifter mate. This story contains dark themes and many triggers, including gore, murder, and graphic sexual content. Please check the full CW/TW list in the book's front matter.
The white wolf thinks I’m his prey. Little does he know, he’s mine.
The rabbit shifters and the werewolves have had a truce for centuries. Our burrow sets three of our kind loose in the woods on Easter to be hunted, to be slaughtered like the prey we are.
Then, the wolves leave us alone for the rest of the year.
When I’m selected as a sacrifice for this twisted tradition, I refuse to be another victim. All it takes is an abandoned cabin in the woods, an old ax, and the unexpecting wolves thinking I’m an easy target like all the rest.
The silver wolf is the only one who doesn’t underestimate me. It’s just my luck that when I scent him… I go into heat, and his inner beast chooses me for its mate.
Too bad we want each other dead.
Review:
She's a a rabbit shifter sent as the new sacrifice to the hungry wolves... except this particular wolf wants her all for himself. Ruth is a rabbit shifter who's entire burrow has had a peace treaty with werewolf shifters... that all hinges on the fact that every year 3 rabbit shifters would be sacrificed to be eaten and hunted by the wolves. When Ruth is selected as a sacrifice she is determined to not go down without a fight and will do anything it takes to stay alive. Carver is a werewolf shifter who is an outcast in his pack, having no real connection with his wolf side... until he meets Ruth when getting ready to set the sacrifices out. Her ruthless nature, her determination to survive, and her beauty all captivate him and awaken the wolf in him. For once in his life his wolf is talking to him and it's telling him that she is his mate... but wolves and rabbits are not meant to be mates... and in this twisted tradition between their clans he is meant to kill her yet all everything in him is telling him to keep her for himself and destroy anyone that gets between them. It's an impossible love between two people who have both murdered those close to the other... yet in this twisted romance they are both perfectly made for one another. The way I completely devoured this book, it was EVERYTHING. It's the twisted love story that I absolutely love and the constant battle between the two characters was great. The undeniable pull between them was so well written and the romance was so good. I really can't get enough of this book and this couple was an absolute delight to read. I love how ruthless and determined to survive Ruth was, and I loved that thats what Carver absolutely adored about her. Ruth was an amazing protagonist who fought tooth and claw to survive, her will to live was amazing. I seriously loved this book and would absolutely recommend it for anyone who enjoys a dark romance with a shifter twist!! It seriously takes enemies to lovers to the extreme perfect state.

Spoilers for an Aliens vs. Predators: Ultimate Prey story
Word Count: 500 words
So, this story is about a girl named April. She decides to go on an Area 51 raid with a man she's never met before, a guy named Brockton. She met him online and he convinced her to come along with him.
They are there to, as you've probably guessed, look for proof that aliens are real.
They got into Area 51 pretty easily. Almost too easily, in my opinion, because as we know in real life, it's pretty much impossible to get into there. Anyways, they get in there, and they're getting kind of freaked out because it seems like the place has been deserted.
Even with the signs that something is wrong, they press onwards, because of course they do. They get inside of the building Brockton’s source said would lead them to evidence. As they are riding the elevator down, they soon encounter a scientist named Renfro.
The guy's going pretty crazy, saying everyone needs to evacuate, that no one's supposed to be there. Then he is killed right in front of April and her acquaintance by a xenomorph. It turns out that the thing escaped containment, which is why Area 51 had been locked down in the first place.
April and Brockton are understandably terrified and try to escape the creature. They're assisted by another scientist, a woman named Kupihea. She pulls them into a safe room, and explains the situation. They're trying to find a way to escape, but there aren't a lot of options, seeing as how, while the xenomorph is trapped beneath the facility, that means that they are trapped with it.
Kupihea decides first and foremost that the xenomorph has to be dealt with, in order to save the lives of the 300+ other people who raided Area 51, all of whom didn't make it downstairs (thankfully). In order to do that, she reveals the existence of another alien.
Along with the xenomorph, the scientists have captured a Yautja, who they named “Dean.” The trio manage to make it to the room he's held in, all while being chased by the xenomorph, which stops once “Dean” is released. The two fight, while the three humans just …stand there and watch?
“Dean” ends up killing the xenomorph, but suffers fatal injuries and dies as well. With the problem resolved, April and Brockton are placed in quarantine while matters are sorted out. It's revealed that Brockton never thought aliens were real in the first place, which meant that him luring April to Area 51 was for nothing. Unfortunately, the damage was done at that point. They end up never seeing each other again, and nothing is ever said about what happened to the 300 other people at the raid.
April spends some time in prison after signing a “generous” deal with the government, and is threatened by them to keep silent about what she's seen (obviously). The story ends with April reflecting on what's happened, talking about how she'd have intermittent nightmares and how she could never stop thinking about how humans aren't alone after all.
This was my first avp story I read, and overall I'd say that I liked it. It's short and to the point, and one could argue a little bland, as the characters are kind of forgettable, but I enjoyed it for what it was. The action is intense, and you can almost feel the emotions that April is experiencing throughout the story. 7/10 overall.

Your Pal’s (Ewan) Movie Reviews: Birds of Prey:
find all of my movie reviews here
Ewan content: this is my favorite version of Ewan. He is unhinged. He is angry. He is flamboyant. He has a stupid and inconsistent accent but it’s forgivable. He doesn’t have a love interest, he’s just a Bad Guy
The movie: it’s great. I am not a Marvel DC movie person at all and was a little nervous about this the first time, but I’ve liked it more every time I’ve seen it. Girl power. BAMFS kick ass. I love this.
The plot: Harley Quin breaks up with the Joker and people she’s pissed off, including Ewan’s bad guy character Roman Sionis, are ready to come after her
