(Probably) Unpopular Opinion:

One of the reasons I don't fancy explicit content in L&C fics is because THIS is the boy in question:

Lucy is freezing to death in almost literally hell, and he is still concientious and respectful enough to ask if he is crossing any boundary she may have. Now, of course, this is before they are officially a couple, but still. I think he respects Lucy too much to do anything that would be objectifying. Lockwood spends all five books role-playing as a victorian gentleman. He also seems to have a pretty dang good grasp on the dignity of the human person, for a boy whose moral upbringing was cut tragically short. I figure they had a pretty wholesome courtship, and I think his main priority would be respecting Lucy in any way he can, be it physically or emotionally.

Analyzing 35 Portland Row:

Back at it with my set decoration posts, but lets overanalyze 35 Portland Row, shall we?

I love the way most of the house seems untouched, like it was frozen in time. Presumably, Lockwood never really "redesigned" the home from its original state, maybe a couple of changes here and there (which are more noticeable as we move on to other rooms) I say this, because of the contrast between pristine and messy in the areas.

The entryway:

I assume that the perspective pictures were taken as a way to assess how the set was going to look, in perspective 1 you can see the pillows on the bench missing, and in perspective 2 the clothing rack/hanger are completely missing.

On screen, we see that contrast I was talking about, you can see the way the clothes are almost stacked on that clothing rack (we can see George's coat, for example) I regard this as the kids respecting the space, since it is Lockwood's house they, most likely, don't want to trash it with their personal mess (or maybe George is the one that sets the 'mess-boundaries' to lighten the cleaning work).

On the other side of the spectrum we see the neat decorations and respected vases (respected as in, not using them as holders or trash bins) and the well cleaned masks and antiques hanging on the wall.

The Living Room:

This room is the "look how professional and neat we are" room, it is (by far) the cleanest one of them all, here is where they receive people and it is evident that they don't use it much by themselves, I know this because of the alarming lack of books laying around. I promise you, in Portland Row there are books EVERYWHERE.

The Library:

I would argue that this is the "let's talk" room of the house, because it's the place where all of the information is. This is the room with the most "Lockwood flare", plus it's the perfect place for me to talk more about the messiness contrast.

In the scene where Lucy goes to talk to Lockwood, she has an apple core in her hand and this madwoman sets it ON THE TABLE (outrageous) but she looks for a spot where she wont ruin the table OR the books beside it. THE SELECTIVE MESS, PEOPLE! And Lockwood doesn't care, he just smiles, thankful.

Also there's a piano on the corner. (Hey! Locky, play Piano Man!)

The Kitchen:

By far my favorite room of the house, it is so cozy! From the spice rack, to the pot holders, to the kitchen utensils, the DETAILS. I'm in love, I love it.

And of course, the thinking cloth. The kitchen is the heart of Portland Row 35. And the crumbs on the table mean the world to me. LIKE DO YOU GET IT? DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE SIMBOLYSM OF CRUMBS ON THE TABLE?

I love kitchens, and I love set decor. That's all I have to say.

The Rooms:

Lockwood's Room:

It's safe to assume that Lockwood doesn't spend much time in his room, so it stays mostly neat. Probably only in use when he's sleeping or getting changed, and most of his time is spent in the library or in the kitchen with the others.

Lucy's Room:

Okay, this room is a set decor work of art. Why? Well, because it is a prime example of a characters personality shining through in a new space.

Not only does it show what it was before (a storage attic) but it also shows what it is now (a personal room) AT THE SAME TIME! You can see the way Lucy organizes everything contrasted with the way it was laid out before.

(look at the shopping bags she was carrying when talking to Kipps beside the bed, CONTINUITY!)

George's Room:

One thing about George is that he is way too excited about The Problem to care about actually cleaning and organizing his own room.

I think that his room is a physical representation of how his brain works. Books on the floor, papers stacked over anything, post it notes on the wall. You can just see the way his brain jumps from one thought to the other by the way his room is laid out!

I saw a comment on a forum during one show she said that the sex was great abt mj.

I also heard that while MJ was still alive during her marriage with Lockwood, she didn't call her husband by his first name because it reminds her of MJ. (same name 🤷)

Anyway in my opinion they didn’t match. She's classless and lacks respect. Evident is also the virginity part in her book which I AM SURE he didn't meant for her to tell the whole world. ( No matter how you slice it you cannot excuse this shit. )

But yeah, i'm not even 100% if i should believe her on that.

You can think and say what you want about their relationship, but I’m not the blogger you should be saying it to if you’re trying to trash Lisa Marie because I don’t agree and I don’t think that of her. I’ve asked multiple times for people not to slander her in my asks, so once again: refrain from putting shit like this in the ask box.

Idk why MJ fans are shocked that MJ didn’t sleep around with women prior to marrying Lisa Marie. The man was raised a devout Jehovah’s Witness and they do not have sex before marriage, and though Michael left the religion some odd years before Lisa Marie, he still clearly struggled with how he’d been raised and continued to practice a lot of things typical of JW’s including not celebrating holidays like Christmas considering he didn’t even have his first Christmas until 1993.

MJ not sleeping around with women isn’t a bad or weird thing at all. If he didn’t want to, who cares? That was his choice. I’m sure it was hard for him to feel comfortable around women to that extent, and I’m sure it was hard for him to find women to date in the first place. MJ said in his own autobiography that it was difficult for him to feel comfortable sexually around women, saying they always tried to move too fast for him and constantly overstepped his boundaries. He was also exposed to way too much sexual shit far too young: performing with strip teases, being told to lift up women’s skirts and shit as part of a music act as a literal child, having porn magazines shown to you on live TV as a child, being forced to listen to your brothers have sex while you’re in or right outside the room. Women constantly sexually harassing you. Madonna herself trying to force herself onto you.

It’s not shocking that Michael was hesitant to have sex with someone given his upbringing and the type of abuse he often suffered… not to mention the fact he was the most famous man on earth.

stroud just gave us the weirdest group of characters and expected me to NOT want to play with them like barbie dolls?? insane

fdb is just so fascinating to me because they're all foils for cot3. individually it's got kat and lucy as the talented listeners but kat has the experience while lucy has the talent. there's george and bobby as rival researchers and then kipps and lockwood with their whole fucking thing LOL don't even get me started on the fact that all their talents mirror each other in these pairings. you could even argue that skull and ned haunt their respective trios in similar ways almost too tho that might be stretching the foils a bit

but even outside the individual mirrors, fdb mirrors cot3 as a team so well. both teams are so well-oiled and they trust each other and they work well but they go about it so differently?? l&co are independent, on their own groove train, blazing a trail through the ghost-hunting world with their own goals and ideals. fdb are breaking boundaries in a very controlled agency environment, and clearly on the downswing as opposed to how l&co are the up and coming underdogs. and you can see it?? l&co are so young and full of life, fdb are starting to lose their steam and fall apart. and yet, one could argue that fdb are almost more secure than l&co in a lot of ways. they have a trust that goes so deep because of what they have to suffer together, trials that l&co don't have to worry about as much since they aren't beholden to fittes and other stakeholders.

and in that, i feel that you can dig so much deeper with fdb and go so much darker. in a lot of ways cot3 feels younger and more inexperienced than fdb. they're kinder, softer, more scared sometimes. fdb are harsher, more efficient, a lot more jaded to the things that cot3 still worry about. which means for them to find satisfaction in pleasure, relationships, etc., they need a lot more! and it's just so much to fun get to dive into such an intoxicating trio and getting to go deeper and exploring the ways that might manifest in their tastes and kinks and how they sometimes struggle with things that are so simple for cot3, like admitting their love for each other. the push and pull for fdb is just fucking insane and clearly, as you can tell, i am very insane about them 💕

I’m proud of how this turned out so I’m crossposting from fb but I respect you so I’m putting it under the cut. Here’s 5 of the absolute worst bullshit I put myself through consuming in 2023 in my lifelong pursuit of cultural literacy. Individual explanations underneath each for those who are interested in me being a hater 🫶

I have tried really hard to develop my critical perspective this year so I do have actual thoughts about these but I did me best to make them entertaining as well.

The Stand - This year I embarked on an effort to read more Stephen King because I really like the Ranged Touch guys and I wanted to better engage with their show Just King Things. I read Carrie first (more on that in another post), which really set me up for such monumental disappointment when it came to this fucking book. Jesus Christ. I have scarcely read a better selling or more beloved work of popular fiction, and I have also separately scarcely read a more offensive and poorly constructed work of popular fiction. I don’t even know how to begin addressing the headache it gave me, but I was pissed off almost the entire time I read it. Caveat here that, like everyone else, I did love the “no great loss” section both on its own merits and as a cute little Vonnegut nod.

Goodnight Beautiful - I read a lot of shitty thrillers because they get miscategorized as horror very commonly- and while I don’t think genre boundaries are hard and fast I do think that these are very distinct groups- but they’re almost as satisfying so I guess I’ll take it while I’m here. But my lord. This is one of the shittiest shitty thrillers I’ve ever managed to make myself finish. I have brain problems that make it difficult for me to distinguish between characters when there’s a lot of action or time weirdness or whatever whatever, but based on reviews that I trust, it was so poorly done that even normal people couldn’t follow what was happening until the author took the reader by the hand and shoveled the answers directly into their mouth.

Stolen Tongues - for YEARS I’ve been hearing people rave about how unique and effective and just good this book is. My experience, however…

1)author can’t turn a phrase to save their life *vine boom*

2) this has such an extended ‘nlog breasting boobily’ description of the girlfriend that I think I literally gagged *vine boom*

3) racist. *vine boom vine boom vine boom*

No One Is Talking About This - one of my biggest pet peeves is the way most people (authors, journalists, thought leaders, your parents, congresspeople) talk about the internet. It is broad, with both the lack of specificity and the extremity that implies. The way someone talks about the internet can tell you so much about their perspective that they must not know how revealing it is or they’d be more embarrassed about how they sound (again, more on this in another post). This book is a great example- it’s inauthentic to the core. There are some readers who clearly interpreted this as funny glibness but the particular way Lockwood takes internet haterism ad absurdum lets me know she’s never had one single internet argument with someone. It pissed me off so royally that I nearly sent this author an email except I’m not convinced she understands how to open those.

The Vile Thing We Created - the only book on this list that I did not finish and yet felt qualified to speak on anyway. Suckered again by booktok! There was sufficient hype for this book that I let myself get excited, I even spent a few of my actual dollars to get the ebook for convenience. I am really enthusiastic about engaging with themes of the horror of parenthood, good or bad, because I find them an interesting reflection of social ideas about parents. However. Let me just excerpt some of this dreck so you can feel the full force of the normie milennial local cringe that is baked in to every sentence:

Lola was elbow-deep in her fifteenth batch of macaron batter for that week. Spring orders were in full swing, as were an ocean of orders for baby shower treats. It never failed. She never refused the business. Quite the opposite. Macarons meant time. Time meant money. She easily brought in an extra twelve-hundred dollars a week during baby shower season. Music floated into the kitchen from the living room record player. Depending on her mood, Lola’s extensive vinyl collection met her every need. While baking, she usually threw on some David Bowie, Foreigner, something along those dramatically-opposite lines. Today, Louis Armstrong’s “A Lot of Livin’ to Do” danced in the air, trumpet notes accompanying Lola’s bopping around the kitchen.

……….yeah. You can see why I ragequit at 15%. It’s also really fucking weird about the dialogue of the black characters.

what are the criteria for a romance novel to be a 5/5 for you?

I don't know if I have a set criteria, tbh? It's not uncommon for a book that I originally rated anywhere from 4 to 4.75 to get upped to a 5/5 later, based on me going back to the book over and over, being unable to stop thinking about it, etc. This happened with Alexis Hall's Something Spectacular. That was a 4.25/5 for me originally; and I just couldn't stop thinking about it, and my favorite moments from the book, and how much I loved the leads. So I upped it to a 5/5.

Book ratings are personal, and numbers are basically a suggestion of enjoyment. That's why I always say "read the review". We can't avoid giving star ratings. It's just impossible. The review will tell you the why. Say I gave a book a 2/5, but you read the review and it's because the book was all fluff, no conflict. You love fluff! You hate conflict! Maybe you'll like that book. So many of my favorite books have absolutely savage reviews, because I often do tend to like books that are a bit... crazier?

I don't have a chart, I don't have things I tick off that go "yes yes, this is right and this is wrong". I don't rate a book the way I'd grade math homework (which is something I shouldn't ever be allowed to do).

I think that for me, a 5/5 book usually:

--hits me in the GUTS on an emotional level... That's why it's very unlikely that a conflict-free book will get a 5/5 from me. It's not because the book is bad, it's because it is.... borderline impossible for me to get invested in content without conflict.

--has some level of explicit sexual content; it's not impossible for me to enjoy a low-heat book, but there are very few authors that can give me a romance without it that I'll fully enjoy. This doesn't mean every 5/5 book is Sierra Simone-level. I gave Lorraine Heath's latest a 5/5, and she doesn't write super intensely sexual books. The sex is explicit, though.

--makes emotional sense. This doesn't mean everyone acts rationally. It doesn't mean they're always nice to each other. It does mean I can understand why they felt the way they did. I don't agree with all of Enzo's actions in Mafia Madman by Mila Finelli (a 5/5 read) but I do understand how he got to the place he was in emotionally. Same with Gia.

--achieves its goals with respect to its subgenre. I am not going to rate like... Lothaire by Kresley Cole, by the parameters with which I'd rate a contemporary romance. Lothaire, to me, is basically a perfect paranormal romance and specifically a perfect vampire romance. I don't think that a lot of Lothaire's actions and behavior would fly for me with a contemporary hero. If a contemporary hero spoke to his partner the way Lothaire speaks to Ellie at times, we'd be done. But he's not a contemporary hero. He's a batshit insane, pretentious vampire royal who's 3,000 years old and has the memories of countless people he's killed rattling around in his noggin. Which is part of what makes him a great paranormal hero. If a typical contemporary hero was that pretentious and weird, it would make no sense. Now, if a dark romance hero acted that way.... maybe we'd be in business, lol.

--usually, I like to see something that pushes the boundaries a bit? Not always, but it definitely often takes a book over the top. Often, if a book does something where I go "oh, I bet that ruffled some readers' feathers" and it does it WELL, I'm more likely to give it 5/5. Again, going back to Lothaire--the postcoital confrontation towards the end of the book is insane and something truly wild happens. I know some readers who hate it. I think Kresley was bold as hell for doing that, and I think she understood that when you're writing something as built up as his book, you've gotta take some risks.

Similarly, I though Joanna Shupe giving Lockwood a serious health issue that is not easily (or definitively) fixed in The Duke Gets Even was bold. He and Nellie have an HEA, of course, and I can make my own conclusions about how it all turns out for them. But it's not spoon-fed to me. It's possible that Lockwood will have a shorter lifespan. And people who have their lives shortened by medical issues like his also deserve (and often get) romantic "HEAs" with their partners in real life, and it's something we need to see more of in romance.

Some of this is just like, hard to define and again, personal. Sometimes I'll grade on a curve for older books that may have issues, but I understand were of their era... and are not "beyond the pale" for me. I enjoy dubcon and noncon in certain books, even when it's not intentionally written, which is the case for many old schools. Racism and homophobia are lines that will have a book's rating knocked down a peg. And there are older books that I love wherein I get what the author was going for, but mistakes were made that were harmful to the point that I can't in good conscience recommend the book.

Lucy came from an abusive home where everyone had power over her and told her what to do. Her mother raised her to believe she's not pretty and her only worth is her talent. Lucy states she dosen't have girl friends; most likely because she grew up in a house full of girls and only one of them liked her. You know how cruel girls can be with each other, comments about looks or habits. Her boundaries were probably never respected and she was only seen as terms of money/asset.

Holly has no faith in her talent. She is OCD and perfectionist who is always dressed perfectly and wants to make her environment perfect. It's mixture of part of how she was raised, her personality but also a coping technique from her trauma. I firmly believe her OCD leads her to cross boundaries like cleaning Lucy's room (speaking as someone who hates the mess always in her room I would hate it more if someone else cleaned it up). The way she speaks to Lucy reminds me a lot of Tahani from The Good Place.

Anyway these 2 traumatized girls with different backgrounds met in the worst possible way and neither one of them had the social or coping skills to deal with it. And neither one of them told the other about their past because they don't want to open up to each other.

The boys did not help. Despite both boys accepting Lucy for the job, they gave Lucy a harder time at the start of their relationship compared to Holly. George was borderline Bully to Lucy and they had a lot of fights in the beginning. Lockwood was not very open. But Lucy stood her ground and fought for recognition; something I think Holly would not have been able to do had she gotten the same treatment. It took time for them to trust each other and open up over the span of months. The boys already experienced opening up their home to someone new but this is Lucy's first time and unlike the boys she didn't get a say in it like they did.

But what really pisses me off about the boys is that they forgot to go back to the question of how was Lucy's holiday and why was she back early. They were too busy covering their asses and smoothing over the hiring of Holly with Lucy. I am not that close to my coworkers but if I took time off and then came back to work early you can bet they are going to be asking why and what happen.

George does tries to be sensitive to Lucy (which is huge for him) but I think he makes a few wrong assumptions. Lockwood however is on a high from acquiring Holly to his company. He has been frustrated for a long time about the stall of growth and recognition. He knows what his team is capable of but can't get the recognition to be taken on a high level (Kinda reminds me of our campaign #SaveLockwoodandCo). Holly expertise is finally taking the company up the path of greatness he always planned. He focuses on that and put blinders up around Lucy cause he's scared of her talent and getting close to her.

The main point is- no one is a villain here. It's a bunch of people with faults interacting with each other and having conflicts.

In other words it's a really good story.

I do need all my Holly-hating Lockwood and co fans to think about the things Holly actually does and says, bc istg, her greatest crime is having her shit together before 9am.

Like, Holly has the worst job at Lockwood and co. She is their project manager. Just getting them all on their jobs at the right times would be like herding cats.

She is also essentially the Portland Row RA and housekeeper. A major aspect of her job is convincing Lucy and George to clean up after themselves. Like it puts her in a very odd position where she has to motivate them to get shit done while staying friendly before she’s even really gotten to know them all.

Almost guarenteed, you don’t hate Holly, you hate how Lockwood treats Lucy after hiring Holly, and you hate what Lucy thinks Holly is.

The fact that these two can have the perfect kissing moment without actually kissing is astonishing. They are the embodiment of "just a friend". They are literally two puzzle pieces that fit perfectly and I think that adds on to their mountain of way they should ignore their feelings and act like they're fine just being friends. Their perfect relationship that gives off old couple vibes stems from what I think is understanding each other's boundaries, connection from a similar goal of stopping ghosts from hurting others and being able to communicate true their eyes.

Lockwood and Lucy both Have had their fair share of disagreements together but they never purposely crossed a boundary when it's set. Lockwood says he doesn't like talking about his past or keeping one room in the house lock from everyone and Lucy respects even though she shows curiosity she never presses him on it or tries to figure out his past. Lucy only reminds him that if he wants to open up she is there to listen even though she does show frustration when he blows her off I think she only a to tha way because after all she went true with nori putting herself out there is a hurdle she still working on overcoming but still trying her best to not push him to far. Same with Lockwood talking about your past is a foreign subject to him he still tries his best to understand Lucy and even apologize when he realizes the reason he didn't know about Lucy best friend who was ghost locked was because he didn't ask . When he puts her in the spotlight and doesn't release how he's been making her feel suffocated he apologizes and explains the way he acted that way and had real productive conversations even telling her he believes her about being able to talk to leave 3 ghost. They both have crossed each other's boundaries but learnt from their mistakes and handled it like mature adults.

Their common goal for being ghost hunters is what brought them together all their trauma comes from ghosts whether a host caused it or the ghost hunting life caused it. Lockwood was orphans because of ghost and it explains his animosity toward them and only wanting to finish a job not really caring about how or way the ghost died or way when he saw the silhouette of the man who died in there door way he seems so bothered by it's glow. Lucy even with being forced into the business by her mom losing her education best friend who was her only real family and her "normal" life she wanted to pretend she had she still cares for this ghost when she sees they need closure or help. They both do this business whether it so save the live they couldn't save or because they where forced into it with no way out they've both bonded over the sleepless nights in the kitchen studying ghost patents and old news posters. They both got into this business for not so happy reasons but it seems to have brought them the perfect person to be happy with.

They have communicated many times but the way they are just able to look at each other's eyes and know what the others think no matter what they say on the outside. Without question they are a walking 😍 emoji when left alone together. Luce can calm him when his panics just by looking eyes with him. He can calm her with just quick contact and a smile. They both could just sit together barely speaking and just lovingly look at each other no matter what going on Lockwood always is trying to find an excuse to look at her and even forget that her been staring at her. Luce has probably already over analysed how Lockwood talks of his jacket or how he plays with his hair. Lockwood already memories the different shades of orange and browns in Lucy's eyes. How do these two seem to give out more romance than a smut book with only 10 seconds of eye contact these two making eye contact should be rated R because of all the sexual tension between them. If there is a power outage just have Luce and Lockwood make eye contact the sparks will keep u running for years no more electric bill. This two will forever be my most love and hated ship for how much romance they go be out but how frustratingly slow they are
