Hi Spicy!!! How about some Pavelyan or Pavellan today (or any other pair that inspires you!): “I told you, you would eventually start begging.” -from Smutty prompts
Happy Friday, and thank you so much for the prompt! This took me two fridays to finish, because I got carried away with it. I had so much fun writing this for @dadrunkwriting, so thank you x3 Pairing: Dorian Pavus/mLavellan Rating: E Length: 2129
The rush of air felt cold against his flushed cheeks.
He heard the soft splashing of the nearby well, the sound comforting in contrast with the noise inside. Just a moment for himself was all he needed, a moment of calmness after dealing with too many politicians and murder plots.
Revassan took a deep breath, inhaling the soft scents of the exotic flowers around him.
“Ah, and there I wondered where the hero of the evening went. I figured I’d find you here.” Dorian’s voice made him smile on the spot. It had been hard to find even a minute for themselves with everything going on. They’d only been able to squeeze in one tiny dance on the balcony.
“You always seem to sense where to find me,” Revassan smirked at the mage. “I’d almost say you keep a magical tracker on me.”
“Maybe I do.” He watched the eyes of the Altus glinting slightly, his lips stretching into a mischievous smirk. “We Tevinter mages are rather good at keeping track of our elves.” Dorian joked. “Wouldn’t want them to run away and develop free will, right?” he teased.
“Ah, I knew there was a catch.” The elf chuckled, observing as Dorian's expression softened. “I take it you came to fetch me then?”
“Actually, I wanted to steal a moment with you.” Dorian presented him with the bottle of wine he’d held behind his back. “What could be nicer than a picnic in Celene’s gardens right?”
“And also her wine, I assume?”
“Of course.” The mage gestured him toward the stone frame of the well. He would never get dirt onto his outfit. “But to soothe your conscience, I asked very politely,” Dorian added swiftly.
“Aren’t you always?” Revassan chuckled as he graciously sat next to the Tevinter mage. “I’m impressed.”
“As you should be.” By the creators, he loved this cocky man. He’s tried to withstand his charms at first but fell for him sooner than expected. Now, he was caught in his trap, unable to let go of the magnificent man that Dorian Pavus was.
“I see you’re very humble tonight.” Revassan teased, watching as Dorian conjured two drinking cups up before he filled them with the sweet red liquid.
“Of course I am.” Dorian’s mustache moved with his smile. “I am the humblest man you’ll ever meet,” he added, only his eyes betraying his words and calling his tease out. By now, Revassan was more than capable of reading this man.
It took him a while to see the vulnerability of Dorian, but he’d taken a deep understanding after meeting his father in Redcliffe.
“Thank you for sneaking the wine out.” Revassan’s smile was genuine. “I needed it,” he added. The past evening had been a lot, and he hadn’t been sure how to deal with political situations. His people didn’t really meddle in things like that, the conclave being the only exception he witnessed.
If he was honest, it was surprising that they listened to a Dalish elf.
“I know.” Dorian’s voice sounded soft when he spoke. “You’re not ballroom material,” he added, the tease evident in his voice. “For me, it’s like coming home.” His gaze drifted away for a heartbeat, the corners of his lips dropping slightly.
“Do you miss it?”
“Home? Of course. Tevinter might have his flaws, but it’s still my home. Don’t you miss your Clan?” he replied, taking a thoughtful sip of wine as he let it dance on his palate. “Hm, I have to say not bad, but nothing could beat a Tevinter Redwine.”
“I miss them.” A sad smile danced on Revassan’s lips. “I miss them ever since I left. Funny, isn’t it?” he chuckled.
“I always wanted to leave, but now that I am so far away from them, I can’t help but want to go back.” It wasn’t as if he could or would, to begin with. There had been nothing more he wanted but to go back when he woke up in the dungeon in Haven. But he knew there was no turning back now.
He’d come too far for that.
Also, there was Dorian. He wasn’t sure if his father would approve of a Tevinter Altus, meaning he’d need to make a choice sooner or later. For now, though, he didn’t want to choose.
“We always miss the things we can’t have. Or so they say.” The mage’s face turned firm, his eyes studying him intensely.
“I told myself I won’t compromise myself anymore.” He set the cup aside before his hand stretched to touch Revassan’s cheek. The elf felt the cold metal of Dorian’s rings pressing against his skin, the touch soothing against his wine-heated cheeks.
“Neither should you.”
Revassan couldn’t say who initiated it, maybe both of them, but he didn’t care much about the hows and who’s as he melted contently into the kiss. Dorian always knew what he needed, the sweet taste of Orlesian wine lingering on his lips.
He got lost in the touch, slightly shuddering against the mage’s palm cupping his cheek.
It was easy to forget everything around them as he closed his eyes, just enjoying the moment and closeness of the other man against him as neither wanted to withdraw.
“Getting a little excited?” Dorian chuckled against his lips as he felt him shiver
He didn’t even give him a chance to answer until his tongue brushed against his lips, gently asking for entrance before slipping in. This bastard knew all too well what he did to him. Revassan melted in his arms as his whimpers were muffled by the invading tongue exploring his mouth.
An unbearable heat began to claim his body, yet he also shivered as he felt the chilly breeze.
All he felt was the body pressing against him and the tongue moving inside his mouth. A hand pressed against his lower back, drawing him closer while the mage ravaged every corner of his mouth, leaving him wanting more.
“Dorian~” his voice got muffled against his devouring lips, and he wasn’t sure if he had spoken or just uttered the altus’s name in his head. It didn’t really matter.
“You’re shivering.” The smug reply indicated that Dorian heard him after all. “Oh, but you’re also so aroused right now. I can feel it,” he added, luring a groan out of the elf’s lips as their pelvises touched.
“So are you.” Revassan teased before a rushed breath escaped him when Dorian pushed him further against one of the walls surrounding the gardens.
“I am always excited for you, Amatus,” he whispered against his ear, his tongue darting over the pointed tips and making him moan hoarsely. Revassan tried to hold back, but he couldn’t betray the want in his voice.
Creators, he wanted this man, and he wanted him now.
“We can’t.” The elf tried to protest still, fighting a battle against his wine and lust-filled brain. He wanted to do nothing more but to be ravaged by the tevinter mage, no matter the place or the time.
“I can tell you don’t mean what you say.” Dorian chuckled, his lips still too close to his sensitive ears.
He dragged his tongue all over the tip, causing Revassan’s fingers to curl into his tunic tightly. A strangled moan escaped him as he tilted his head to the side, giving the impossible man more access to his ear and neck.
“I guess I have to make you beg for it then. We both know you will.”
It was both a threat and a promise. Dorian always managed to bring him to that point, and Revassan was sure the Altus would manage this time, too. No matter if they were in the Empress's gardens or not.
A part of him needed to admit that the thought excited him a bit.
“What if someone sees us?” The elf asked, even though the chance added to the thrill. He knew the corner that Dorian was dark enough that no one would see for real, but just the implication of it would serve the nobles enough topics to gossip about.
“Are you truly caring about that?” Dorian’s voice was husky, but Revassan knew he only needed to say the word, and he’d stop.
“I leave that to you to find out.” Revassan teased him, only to moan as quietly as he could when he felt Dorian’s teeth scrapping against the sensitive skin of his ears.
One hand slowly snaked towards his crotch, brushing against his bulge innocently enough to play it off accidentally. But he knew it wasn’t. He couldn’t help but press against the hand, secretly yearning for more as the mage’s lips and teeth drove him insane in such a short amount of time.
“Dorian…~” he whimpered as the Altus kissed his way to his earlobe, only to continue at his neck.
His hips couldn’t help but move against the hand cupping his erection, but he was too proud to beg. He wouldn’t give in to Dorian’s demands that quickly, but he also couldn’t help the dizziness rushing through him. It probably was the mixture of the blood flow and the wine.
“I love it when you moan my name like this, Amatus.” The cocky mage whispered against his heated skin.
His lips left marks where they touched him as his hand slowly vanished within the elf’s trousers. They were so close to the goal as they stretched over the smooth skin above his hard cock, the touch so very teasing as Revassan wanted nothing more but to be touched.
But Dorian wouldn’t give him what he wanted. Not just like that.
“You’re such a… a prick.” Revassan stuttered out, his brain unable to focus on anything but the heat and the throbbing pulse of his cock.
“I am, but admit it, You love me for it.” Dorian chuckled against his neck, leaving another mark behind after sucking the sensitive skin. Revassan felt every tooth dragging over his skin and the soft sensation of the mage’s lips as it pressed right against him.
But Dorian was right. He loved this man more than anyone else.
“Dorian…” a moan broke past the elf’s lips again, his hips grinding wantonly against the hand touching anything but his throbbing cock. “Pl… Please.” he gave in and fought his pride, not caring if anyone would see them.
All that he wanted was Dorian.
“I told you. You would eventually start begging.” The altus chuckled just as his hand traveled lover to wrap around Revassan’s cock. “It’s alright,” he added in a soothing voice as the elf moaned underneath his touch, his fingers curling firmly into his clothes.
“I take care of you,” Dorian promised softly, his hand never ceasing its pumping motion as it dragged up and down on the pulsing shaft.
It drove him insane. Both the sensation and the knowledge of being jerked off in the Empresse’s gardens were too much. He didn’t know what to think since all his thoughts became a heated blur, his hips thrusting into his lover’s hands on their own.
It didn’t matter anymore where they were or what they did. All that mattered was that Revassan was here and the heat rushing through him, wanting more. And what he wanted right now was to find release within his lover’s hands.
“I’m close.” he moaned, his forest green eyes hooded and foggy when he tried to make eye contact.
“Then come for me, Amatus,” Dorian answered, his voice hoarse since he couldn’t hide his own desire. “Come,” he added in a whisper, his lips gently sucking at the tip of Revassan’s pointed ear as his hand kept a firm grip on his cock.
He didn’t budge when the elf found his release within his hand, hips stuttering as he made a small mess.
For a moment, he felt shaky. Only the body of his lover could keep Revassan from falling onto the ground as his heart rate went up. He almost felt like he was bursting, and everything around him was a blur.
But he felt Dorian’s warmth and strength as it held him, the mage’s aftershave so prominent in his nostrils.
Revassan could’ve fallen asleep but forced himself to regain a clear head. No one was around them, just the two of them sharing a heated embrace as the elf slowly came to his senses.
“What about you?” he asked hoarsely as one of his hands softly brushed questionably against Dorian’s bulge.
“How about we join the party for now, and you repay me after we retire to our quarters?” The altus whispered against his ear, cleaning his hand with a handy spell and giving Revassan a moment to make himself decent again.
“You think anyone can lend us any silk shawls?”

Some dazzling #ArtDeco detail from the Redwine Building in #Hollywood, California. Needs some TLC but at least it's not an inch away from being torn down anymore, thanks to the efforts of former Art Deco Society of Los Angeles President John Thomas. The architect was the same dude that designed the legendary Villa Riviera here in the LBC. #1931 #RichardDKing 1618 N Las Palmas

Here's one of my favorite pictures from Oregon's Willamette Valley. In a few short weeks, we will have Thanksgiving (well it's my second one). For me in the wine world, Thanksgiving always reminds me of Pinot Noir.
This incredible grape never gets enough recognition for its quality and depth. Especially with the typical Thanksgiving immense meal. This week at ArtofthePair.com, I dive into why Pinot works with turkey, ham, and canned cranberry sauce as we get ready to celebrate.
I've also updated my notes related to Lambrusco from last week as I purchased another bottle from Trader Joe's. Lots to information coming to you this week so check it out.

A quick recap - Thursday of this week (a minute past midnight to be exact) is the official Beaujolais Nouveau day; The third Thursday of every November has been traditionally celebrated in Beaujolais to mark the end of the harvest season. And what better way to celebrate than to crack open a crunchy, chilled bottle?! So, here are FOUR bottles of Gamay, 1 of whom is our special Beaujolais Nouveau We also have a juice bomb of Gamay from Burgundy by A Morgon, which is a Beaujolais Cru (a specific terroir marked for its distinguished qualities) And to close things off, a bit of inimitable magic by Ganevat. #purewines #naturalwine #naturalwines #organic #biodynamic #jurawine #morgon #beaujolais #gamay #beaujolaisnouveau #bojo #jurawine #wset #winetasting #winelovers #winetime #wineoclock #instawine #glouglou #gluglu #winestory #winepic #wineworld #winestyle #wineshop #veganwine #winegeek #nattywine #noaddedsugar #frenchwine #redwine

What is the best Cinderella retelling?
I did this a while ago with Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, which can be found here, and it went pretty well, so here I am again. This is my ranking of Cinderella retellings, from worst to best.
7th Place: Geekerella by Ashley Poston
Tumblr media
Have you seen the movies Starstruck or A Cinderella Story? If you have, congratulations! You don't need to read this book! This book was horrendously predictable, out of touch, and cringey. I will say that the concept was sweet, and the lore is surprisingly in-depth, but that's about where my praise ends. The main character, who loves to disparage other girls for the unforgivable crime of liking a celebrity, verges on not-like-other-girls, and she's a caricature of fandom. Pretty much all the worst parts of 2012 Tumblr wrapped into a person, and this book was published in 2015. Like many YA contemporaries, this book suffers from forced, awkward pop culture references that made it nigh unreadable. Save yourself some time and watch Starstruck.
6th Place: The Fairy Godmother by Mercedes Lackey
Tumblr media
I quite enjoyed this one; I loved the worldbuilding with all its fairy tale references and rules, and the characters were dynamic and interesting. However, I wouldn't really classify it as a Cinderella retelling. The main character, Elena, is supposed to fit the role of Cinderella before she's recruited as a fairy-godmother-in-training, but that's about where the similarities end. Instead, I would say this is a fantasy romance inspired by fairy tale conventions. (Fair warning: there is some casual homophobia in this book—they mention many times that princesses marrying princesses is out of the question—which is why my personal rating for this book dropped from a 9 to a 7.)
5th Place: The Glass Queen by Gena Showalter
Tumblr media
Now, this one is definitely a Cinderella retelling, and it will never let you forget it. In my opinion, a good retelling should be able to stand alone without the fairy tale references. However, this book can't go ten pages without reminding the reader that everything's about Cinderella! Remember it's supposed to be like Cinderella! I found this a decent romance, but it was drug out for way too long. I much prefer its companion, The Evil Queen. Also, this is NOT YA. It is NA romance, and there is a full-on sex scene; I don't know why it's always shelved and sorted as YA.
4th Place: Ash by Malinda Lo
Tumblr media
This retelling is unique in that our Cinderella character, Ash, is bisexual. This is done through a love triangle, but I feel like it was handled well with a satisfying ending. I liked the subtle fantasy of the world where fairies do indeed exist but are unknown by the general populace. It was a little slow, especially for someone like me who reads mostly fantasy adventure, but it's also very short at just over 250 pages. I wouldn't really say there's a plot to this book; it is purely romance and character-focused, so if that's something you like, check this one out.
3rd Place: The Blood Spell by C. J. Redwine
Tumblr media
I really enjoyed this book. It took the classic elements of Cinderella—the glass slipper, the stepfamily, the ball—and incorporated them into an already great high fantasy plot. Blue was a great protagonist with sympathetic and realistic motivations, and I loved her relationship with Kellan. It fits the trope of childhood-rivals-to-lovers, which I love when I can find it. The antagonist Dinah, was also very well-written; I had my moments when I felt for her, even if I hated her guts. My only complaint is that it gets a little slow in the middle, but otherwise, a great retelling.
2nd Place: Cinder by Marissa Meyer
Tumblr media
The Lunar Chronicles are arguably a YA classic, and I believe they've earned their place. The concept of a sci-fi retelling rather than fantasy or contemporary is rather unique and not done frequently. Still, it fits the premise of the story, and I loved how it was woven in. I still think the glass slipper being Cinder's actual foot is a stroke of genius. I know some people have issues with this series for its lacking or inaccurate representation, but for a book published in 2012, the height of straight, white YA, I don't think it's too bad. In terms of the book itself, I find the plot engaging and the characters easy to empathize with, and I think it fully deserves second place.
1st Place: Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
Tumblr media
If you've been following me for a while, you'll know there was truly no other choice. Ella Enchanted is the quintessential feminist Cinderella retelling with an amazing female lead, a charming love interest, and a funny, classic fantasy plot. This book was so essential to my childhood, and its message is important for young girls everywhere. Gail Carson Levine is a master of the fairy tale retelling, and it really shows here. I will never stop recommending this book, and I can't imagine putting anything above it.
Thanks for reading and stay tuned for more retelling rankings!

I had so much fun with the ask yesterday, that I rewrote some bits to make a Dorian/trans male Lavellan version x3 I crossposted both on my Ao3, because I had fun writing it, but I am sharing the altered version here too x3 Just be mindful that this could use some triggering words, and if you are not comfortable with the Cl** and Cu** words being used, stay clear of this please x3 Pairing: Dorian/trans male Lavellan Rating: E
“And you’re aroused. I know it,” he added, luring a groan out of the elf’s lips as their pelvises touched.
One hand slowly snaked towards his crotch, brushing against his pants innocently enough to play it off accidentally. But he knew it wasn’t. He couldn’t help but press against the hand, secretly yearning for more as the mage’s lips and teeth drove him insane in such a short amount of time.
“Dorian…~” he whimpered as the Altus kissed his way to his earlobe, only to continue at his neck.
His hips couldn’t help but move against the hand, but he was too proud to beg.
They were so close to the goal as they stretched over the smooth skin above his cunt, the touch so very teasing as Revassan wanted nothing more but to be touched.
But Dorian wouldn’t give him what he wanted. Not just like that.
“You’re such a… a prick.” Revassan stuttered out, his brain unable to focus on anything but the heat and the wetness.
“Dorian…” a moan broke past the elf’s lips again, his hips grinding wantonly against the hand touching anything but his pulsing clit. “Pl… Please.” he gave in and fought his pride, not caring if anyone would see them.
All that he wanted was Dorian.
“I told you. You would eventually start begging.” The altus chuckled just as his hand traveled lover to rub Revassan’s clit. “It’s alright,” he added in a soothing voice as the elf moaned underneath his touch, his fingers curling firmly into his clothes.
“I take care of you,” Dorian promised softly, his hand never stopping its circling motion as it pressed against the elf’s engorged clit.
It drove him insane. The sensation, as much as the knowledge of being handled in the Empresse’s gardens, was too much.
“Come,” he added in a whisper, his lips gently sucking at the tip of Revassan’s pointed ear as his hand kept pressing firmly against his sweet spot.
He didn’t budge when the elf found his release within his hand, hips stuttering as his cunt clenched around nothing.

Man Made of Stone: Chapter Nine
Previous      Next
Pairing: Horacio Carrillo x Reader
Summary: No matter what choice you made, your life wouldn’t be free from hurt.
Rating: R
Warnings/notes: there was so much pterodactyl screeching involved in the writing of this chapter; this was also supposed to be the last chapter life is funny huh; canon-typical violence; language; smoking; blood; I’M EXHAUSTED, but Emily, you say, it’s only 1300 words. Yes, this version is only 1300 words. I’m genuinely afraid this is turning into a “if you live long enough you turn into the villain situations” but with a fic.
Word count: 1353
Tumblr media
You didn’t sleep well that night. You’d returned to the couch and it was just as uncomfortable for sleeping as ever, but that wasn’t what was keeping you up. The look on Carrillo’s face was painted on your eyelids. Was leaving really the right choice? Javier had said there was nothing for you in Colombia, but was there anything for you in the States, either? Your family was gone, friends scattered. There was safety there. Safety. Safety from what? An early death. Was that really true though? The plane could crash moments after take-off. You could trip down the stairs and break your neck. Death would take you any time, anywhere. So what was there in the States for you? A life free from the pain of losing Carrillo? But you would be losing him anyway. The truth was you would be choosing one kind of pain over another. Your life wouldn’t be free from hurt. You sighed and found the pack of cigarettes sitting on the end table, placing one between your lips.
“Javi, would you come back with that,” you called, following him out to the sidewalk. He had your bag in his hand, prepared to toss it in his truck. The two of you had been arguing since you’d told him of your decision, and some harsh words had been said.
“I should never have given Carrillo that fucking key,” Javier grumbled, fumbling to unlock the door.
“I think I would have come to this decision on my own,” you said, putting your hand over Javier’s to stop him.
“I don’t know how to tell you that Carrillo’s dick is not worth dying over,” he hissed.
“Will you shut the fuck up for two minutes?” you snapped, shoving his hand back at him. You took a deep breath and laid bare all your thoughts from the night before. “I never thought I’d find anyone after Charlie, I never wanted to. If I leave now, if I make this one choice out of fear, I’ll live the rest of my life in regret. I know it.”
“Yeah, but you’ll live,” Javier said.
“Javi, why didn’t you keep your promise when Charlie died?” You didn’t give him the chance to answer, because you already knew what it was. “Because it wasn’t your place then, and it isn’t your place now.” Javier heaved a deep sigh and you watched his jaw work. He was unhappy but he stopped fighting and handed you your backpack.
“Thank you,” you whispered. The two of you looked up at the sound of tires screeching and saw Murphy get out of his truck.
“What the fuck are you two doing out here?” he demanded as he rushed over to meet you.
“What’s going on?” Javier asked. Before Murphy could respond, shots rang out and shattered the windshields of both trucks. The vehicles sagged down as tires were blown out.
“Get down!” Javier shouted, grabbing you by your arm and pulling you down into a crouch. He led you around to the back of his truck as gunshots and shouts cluttered the air. You flinched as a shot took out a side mirror. The three of you huddled low to the ground, Javier and Murphy peering around the truck.
“Shit,” Murphy hissed. “We gotta go, c’mon!” Javier grabbed you by the hand and the three of you ran in the direction of the embassy, keeping your heads down. Javier led the way through alleys and side streets, keeping close to the walls, his gun ready. Murphy followed close behind the two of you.
“Why didn’t I get any fucking warning about this?” Javier demanded once the three of you felt you could settle down for a moment. You were huddled under an awning, breathing heavily, the sounds of shouts and destruction distant.
“Carrillo called you, you didn’t answer,” Murphy said, his hand on his hip as he tried to catch his breath. The sound of shattered glass being kicked made the three of you jump and Javier and Murphy pointed their guns in the direction of the noise. A child of about twelve peered out of an alley doorway at the three of you. The two men lowered their guns, Javier holding his hand out in an appeasing gesture.
“Tranquilo,” he said, making a big show of putting his gun away. “Está todo bien.”
“¡Están por aquí!” the kid shouted.
“Fuck!” Javier hissed.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” Murphy growled. The kid kept shouting and started waving his arms. Murphy pointed his gun at him, rage shining in his eyes.
“Murphy, stop!” you shouted, “come on!” The three of you were running again, sweat dripping down your forehead, blurring your vision, desperate to keep up with Javier as the shouts grew louder. You rounded a corner and a shot rang out. Javier was knocked back and you slid forward, tripping onto your hands, feeling the blistering heat of your skin tearing on the asphalt.
“Javi?” you asked, looking back over your shoulder. He’d stumbled back onto the ground, holding his shoulder. Murphy was with him, one hand on his partner’s back, the other in the air, looking at something in front of the three of you. Something smooth and cool slid under your chin, forcing your head up, and your eyes fell on a group of armed men. The one with the barrel of his gun under your chin chuckled at your helplessness.
“Pablo’s going to dump your body on Carrillo’s doorstep, puta,” he said. You glared at him, refusing to give him the satisfaction of seeing the fear that was coursing through your veins, but your heart was pounding a mile a minute and it was hard to keep your eyes off of the gun as he positioned it so the barrel was pointing at your forehead. A shot rang out, a shot that you were so sure was meant for you that your body almost crumbled with it, but you saw the light go out of the man’s eyes. You saw the blood trickle down from the hole in his forehead before his body collapsed in a heap in front of you. As more gunshots split the air you looked behind you to see Carrillo lowering his weapon and coming to your side. He helped you to your feet and got you past his line of men.
“Get in the truck,” he told you, nodding to where Murphy was helping Javier into a police truck. When you hesitated, he called Trujillo who took you by the arm and spurred you forward. You turned, trying to look back as Carrillo called orders to his men, but Trujillo ushered you into the truck and closed the door. Carrillo gave you a nod as the truck pulled away and you rested your head against the window, clenching your eyes shut.
“Please keep him safe,” you whispered. To who you didn’t know.
Bodies riddled with bullets lay in the street and you were running, your bag in your hand. There was nothing you could do, you knew, but still you had to try. Their police uniforms were stained with blood, more red than green, and you knelt beside the man who was still alive, feeling the legs of your scrubs growing damp. You took his hand in yours, spoke calming words, but you froze when you saw his face.
“Charlie?” you whispered, your voice barely audible.
“Would you think less of me?” He choked on the words, blood sputtering from his lips.
“What?” Tears pricked your eyes.
A cool barrel slid under your chin and you looked up to see a group of armed men in front of you.
“Pablo’s going to dump your body on Carrillo’s doorstep, puta.” The gun came level with your forehead.
“He’ll save me,” you whispered, “he’ll save me.” Any moment you would hear the gunshot and the man would fall. You would turn and Carrillo would be there, holding his hand out for yours. “He’ll save me.” It was taking too long. The man’s grin widened as your breathing quickened. You squeezed your eyes shut. Bang.

Retellings Ranked: Snow White
More fairytale retellings! Though never my favorite as a child, I’ve come to appreciate the story of Snow White more as I got older. As always, I’m here to provide my thoughts. (Please don’t come after me for rating your favorite retelling badly, reading is subjective, etc. Post periodically updated.)
A Good Time!
The Sleeper and the Spindle by Neil Gaiman- This is sort of cheating because this is a Snow White/Sleeping Beauty crossover, so I’ll probably list it in both. A short novella with beautiful art by Chris Riddell, a nice twist on the magic kiss.
Forest of a Thousand Lanterns + Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix by Julie C. Dao- Duology that presents both the backstory of the Evil Queen and the subsequent story of Snow White. Gorgeous world and prose in both books. I actually liked the first better (unusual for me as I’m not that into villain origin stories), but both very true to the story, with a fresh voice.
Winter by Marissa Meyer- Fourth in a series, which I actually liked more in the later books. Fairytales in space--sort of. In a futuristic sci-fi setting that has space elements. Snow White isn’t the only fairytale in play here, but she gets a spot in the limelight in this book, and it’s for the better.
Pros/Cons
Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi- Puts fairytale tropes in a realistic historical setting, and brings Snow White into discussion of race, which is very neat. (And something I would love people to play with more!) Left me feeling unfulfilled at the end, unfortunately, and some questionable choices about trans rep (in my uninformed, cisgender opinion). Really interesting character dynamics though.
Six Gun Snow White by Catherynne M. Valente- Western style Snow White, which is such a cool concept. Also, a half-Native (Crow, I believe), Snow White, which has a lot of potential especially to talk about beauty standards, which I think this at least touches on. But I believe Valente is white and I’m not sure that narrative should be told by white voices. Don’t remember anything terrible in terms of representation, but I suspect it was probably not the best-done rep either.
I Don’t Remember Anything, But I Did Rate it 3/5 Stars
Girls Made of Snow and Glass by Melissa Bashardoust- WLW Snow White and Stepmother-Daughter solidarity! Unfortunately did not make much of an impression on me. But I did rate it 3 stars.
Snow: A Retelling of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves by Tracy Lynn- Cheating again because technically I rated this 4 stars. But I remember very little. Pretty sure I liked her relationship with the dwarves? A mystery.
Snow in Summer by Jane Yolen- Snow White in Appalachia. I wrote a whole review and I still don’t remember anything about this one, regrettably.
...Pass
The Shadow Queen by C.J. Redwine- Not necessarily bad, but I felt like there wasn’t really anything new in this retelling. (Which is weird because the Snow White character actually had magic.) The characters behaved pretty much as expected and I was sort of bored. First in a series which I have not read any more of.
The Fairest Beauty by Melanie Dickerson- I’m gonna be honest, I don’t know why I read so many of Melanie Dickerson’s fairytale retellings. I didn’t really like them. They were uh...boring, no offense. And religious, which is fine but not really my vibe.
