Slavery (Before the Civil War) – Southern conservatives staunchly defended slavery as a vital part of the economy and way of life.

The Civil War (1861-1865) – Conservatives in the South fought to preserve slavery, leading to a bloody conflict that devastated the nation.

Reconstruction (1865-1877) – Southern conservatives resisted Reconstruction efforts to grant rights and protections to freed slaves.

Jim Crow Laws (Late 1800s-1960s) – Southern conservatives fought to maintain racial segregation and disenfranchise Black Americans.

The Women's Suffrage Movement (Late 1800s-1920) – Conservative politicians and groups actively opposed women's right to vote.

The New Deal (1930s) – Conservative elites opposed Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal programs, which sought to alleviate poverty and economic inequality during the Great Depression.

Older Bachelor stardew headcanons because I’ve been playing lots recently! All sfw, some mentions of smoking/alcohol 💕 also please bear in mind I am no SDV expert, so sorry if these go against canon occasionally!

Harvey ☕️🔬📚

• Secret smoking habit that he would rather die than tell anyone about. Not often, but during flu season when he’s stressed, you can find him cooped up in his room with an imported cigar or a Marlboro Gold, an espresso and an Agatha Christie.

• Plays classic soul, funk, golden oldies and jazz in the foyer of the clinic on an old-timey record player, and chooses every day from his large record collection. Frequently irritates Maru with the extent of his Doris Day enjoyment.

• Kind of wide-set - very broad shoulders, and quite tall.

• Packets of salted peanuts and cookies on the clinic foyer desk which he restocks every week.

• Goes to fetch you personally from the mines or Skull Cavern sometimes when you get knocked out. And he also keeps a vintage forest green car behind the clinic to pick you up in. He hopes one day you’ll wake up on the way back and compliment his tasteful vehicle choice or notice he’s bringing you home. You don’t.

• Best friends with Evelyn. Worst enemies with George.

• Tennis player. Plays with whoever will say yes in the mountains and always manages to punt the ball into the lake somehow. Also used to be in a rock climbing club at university, and has sort of sinewy forearms as a result.

• Outrageous flirt after a few glasses of Pinot Noir, mostly because I think he’s on the spectrum but also because I think it would help him stop being quite so nervous.

• Brown suspenders. Every. Single. Day.

• Gives Jas and Vincent candy after their checkup.

• “Sweetheart/honey” as a nickname for you.

Elliott 📜🖋️🐚

• Striped. Matching. Pajamas.

• Finds, forages and cooks mussels when he needs to impress someone. And on that note, very much a French cuisine enjoyer.

• If blue cheese has no fans Elliott is dead.

• Rizz master. Silver tongue. Read so much romance when he was a teenager that it has actively become a part of his personality to be a book boyfriend.

• Very willowy and slender. Metabolism of the gods. Puts away food like it’s nobody’s business.

• Can read several languages, but just can’t master an accent so never uses them in a spoken context. Definitely a student of Latin.

• English accent headcanon! Probably spent the first couple of decades of his life in somewhere high-income like Warwickshire, or (more likely) Cornwall or Exeter, on or near the coast. I am also envisioning him as having been to an old collegiate university like Durham, or maybe a college at Oxford (Merton I reckon).

• Writes and then burns poems about everyone he’s ever been in love with. Starts keeping them when he meets you.

• Chats fashion history with Emily and Haley.

• Religious about his collection of cravat-style ties because he’s seen the Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice a few too many times.

• Frequent book club gatherings with Caroline, Marnie, Robin and Jodi (mostly because mothers love him, the main selling point here being that he has definitely read at least one Jodi Picoult book. He does not remember anything about it, he’s just glad to be invited).

Shane 🍺🍕🐓

• Snores. Very quiet about it though.

• I know a lot of people HC Harvey as oldest but I reckon it’s Shane. He also acts the most like a bitter old man whereas I feel Harvey is just ‘mature’.

• Could be convinced to grow a beard. Maybe.

• Goes for a jog three times a week. Hates it. Refuses to stop and really isn’t even sure why he does it himself any more.

• Secret Lana Del Rey enjoyer. Mainly a fan of Midwest emo, classic rock, nu metal and sometimes country but the kind of country where they sing about killing people and getting away with it.

• Raised by heavily Christian parents in the Deep South. Yes this is a Southern accent headcanon. Yeehaw.

• Lets Jas put eyeshadow on him sometimes. Shaves properly only when she wants to put makeup on him.

• Craft beer’s number one opp. Wants an ice cold tap Budweiser only, and if there isn’t enough head on it he will be asking for a refund. Not that Gus would ever do that to him.

• Has muscle with padding. Very strong, very wide in stature, but not lean at all. Biceps wider than your neck that you could (and would) use as pillows.

• Makes the most insane hangover breakfast known to man. Bacon. Pancakes. Sausage. Home fries. Butter. Syrup. You’re putting on a bit of healthy relationship weight for sure with Shane as your partner.

• “Darlin’/baby” user. “Sweet cheeks” as a joke. Kind of a joke.

Bird #54 - the Smooth-billed Ani (LC)

These weird iridescent fellas are found in South America, up through the Caribbean and to southern Florida. They are in the cuckoo family, but raise their own chicks. In fact, they have communal nests that multiple females lay eggs in and everyone helps with parenting!

It feels worth sharing that eBird describes them as "not particularly graceful; usually seen crashing around awkwardly". me

It's an honour to bring little bird guys into everyone's lives, glad to know yall like them! And now you have this little bird guy here made just for you :>

This is a story based challenge which I pulled this theme straight out my ass but it’s a standard Legacy challenge, but I think you’ll be able to see our thought process through this. We didn’t assign colors to the generations but i’m a SUCKER for a good berry challenge so in our play through we did color coordinate  >ᴗ<

Everyone’s talking about that P.O.W. line from the most recent chapter so I’m going to throw in my own (maybe crazy) theory:

It’s not about Anya’s parents. It’s about Yor’s.

Ok, hear me out: based on everyone’s ages, I would guess this takes place either just before the adults in the main story were born, or were very little. This flashback storyline seems to be taking place near the start of the war, however we shouldn’t assume that the rumoured experimentation wasn’t happening before the war started, either. So what if this experimentation wasn’t about getting a telepath, but rather a super soldier?

We know Yor lived in East Neilsberg but I don’t believe it’s been explicitly stated that her family is from there. Her mother was likely “from the South” due to her using a customary ingredient from that area in a recipe but that doesn’t necessarily mean she’s from Southern Ostania. She could have come from the southern border region in Ostania/Westalis. On top of that, if either one or both parents weren’t from Ostania, it may explain why she has (supposedly) no other extended family within Ostania who could have helped her raise Yuri. No aunts or uncles, grandparents, cousins… Not even family friends or third cousins once removed. Have they all died due to the war/sickness/etc. or do they just not live in the country?

So, what if either both parents or at least just her mother were taken in as prisoners of war (either from being soldiers for Westalis or maybe even civilians from a border town swept away in the chaos). The experiments were to try and gain a Winter Soldier-esque weapon of war, and then preferably more of them to create an army. The experiments were extreme and killed most of the test subjects but Yor’s mother survived. And what if it was because she was pregnant?

She gave birth to a beautiful little girl, and then thanks to what the bastards had done to her and her motherly instincts being turned up to eleven, she breaks out with her child before they could determine if the experiments had any effect on the baby. Yor’s parents then escape to a quiet corner in the southeast of Ostania, believing it to be too risky to try to get back to Westalis. They raise their little girl with kindness and love, trying as hard as they could to give her a life free from the horrors they faced themselves. Eventually, they have a second child and all seems well. Both of their children are bright and happy and strong… Perhaps a little too strong in the case of the daughter. Even their son is more resilient than most kids. But their abilities aren’t the things that would make them the weapons those researchers wanted: it was who they were as people. And Yor is such a compassionate, innocent little girl despite her ability to bend inch-thick metal at the age of seven. And Yuri is so passionate and loving despite his ability to bounce back so quickly from broken bones.

But then they’re discovered. The parents do what they must to protect their children, and it works…but they don’t come home that night. Or the next night. Or the next.

Yor realizes what must have happened - that her parents had died while they were out running errands - and it left her in charge of the household. (And to go deeper: because their parents were trying to hide from the Ostanian government, they didn’t carry accurate identification so in the event something like this happened, officials wouldn’t be led back to their children. This is why no one discovered that there were two now-orphaned young children living alone and either forced them into a relative’s custody or an orphanage.)

And from there, we get to what we do know: Yor struggled to take care of Yuri until she was discovered by Garden. Her natural strength came in handy (but I also maintain that Shopkeeper also looks for specific personalities as well, so Yor’s unwavering bravery and her deep capacity for empathy and kindness also were key) and she was trained up to be on of the best assassins in Ostania. Garden would have done a great job in ensuring her super strength remained hidden by training her to control it better. It also would have provided the necessary cover and support to keep her and Yuri from falling into suspicion from the government.

Due to their desire to protect their children, Yor’s parents never talked about what happened to them. As far as she and Yuri are concerned, they were born in Ostania and are citizens of Ostania. (And technically that is the case for them both, although Yor’s birth certificate was forged since the scientists in the lab didn’t care enough about a baby that may not even live for very long to create one.) How they find any of this out, I’m not sure, but it opens up some interesting plot beats.

Yor would find out her strength really is unnatural, and that she’s technically a human test subject (but that would also further deepen her connection with Anya, and maybe would mean Anya would be more willing to open up to Yor if she hasn’t already). Yuri would discover that the country he’s been sacrificing so much for has not only tortured and experimented on his parents (and sister) but also is the reason they were orphaned (and all the hardships that came with that). Maybe there’s a chance then that one or both parents actually survived, and are just waiting for another conflict to be trotted out as the weapons that they are. Or there are relatives in Westalis who are more than thrilled to be reunited with their lost family.

(And this would work logically for the type of experiments these shady labs were doing: during wartime and the build up to it they would focus on things that would put them ahead of their enemy from a weapons standpoint. Focusing on boosting their armies’ capacities would be the priority at the start of the war. But toward the end, and then going into the Cold War, they would shift to intelligence-based research. Anya’s telepathy and Bond’s future sight would be more beneficial in a war of intelligence than an actual war, hence the shift toward that around the time that Anya was born. And I know Code: White isn’t technically canon but there’s a particular character in that movie that further suggests that Ostania was trying very hard to turn people into weapons.)

So yeah, that’s my theory (this became a much longer post than I first thought it would be).

Am I the only one that really, really , really, HATES how mixed kids are portrayed in LOK.

Like why is their so much waisted potential, and it makes me so mad because I would really love to see one person embrace both of their parents nations therefore, by inheritance, ALSO THEIR OWN NATIONS. Like don’t just embrace the nation were their bending comes from or the nation of which they look like the most. *cough cough* Mako and Bolin.

Like we all know this is about Bumi, Kya, and Tenzin,

And like I know that Aang was the last of his people so it only made sense for Tenzin to take on more of his air nomad or air nation side, and I know it could be the parents fault that children don’t embrace both cultures, and I could get into the whole argument of *why didn’t Aang teach Kya and Bumi* and all of that, but one you have already heard that like a billion times, and two yes Aang SHOULD have helped them embrace their air nomad side more after all they are part of the few people who still carry air nation genes. And lets leave Aang bieng a better father at that (which by the way am still very mad that they wrote him like that.)

Let’s get back to the kids becuase it is the little things they could have done and didn’t do, as an example why did Tenzin not give Pema a bethroval necklace, like in my mind he did and Pema wears it but we can’t see it cause her robes hide it OR why didn’t we see Tenzin wear a Parka (I know airbenders don’t get cold just hear me out) when he was in the South Pole just because its his culture and he can embrace it down there. Or why doesn’t Kya carry around the necklace that Yang Chen, Gyatso, and Aang have, correct me if am wrong but I believe that they are used by air nomads to meditate, and she enjoys meditation even taught some of the knew air nation. I imagine she wouldn’t wear it around her neck but have it wrapped around her wrist or wear it on her hip like if it was hanging from a utility belt and then when she meditates she would USE IT. Imagine it is the necklace Aang used to wear so it would become parallel to katara wearing her moms necklace. And this are small details because I know Tenzin is the last airbender for a while and Kya is one of the few waterbenders who originally come from the southern water tribe, so they wouldn’t be able to embrace both their cultures so much. But lets talk about the other one… BUMI, in my mind he doesn’t only dress in water tribe clothes but his outfits are the perfect mix between both his cultures, he is a non-bender he doesn’t owe anyone anything, but the writers are cowards. And for me thats the bare minimum anyway, if it were really up to ME THEY WOULD ALL EMBRACE THEIR CULTURES.

Then again there is also the issue that whatever traditions or customs Tenzin does or practices will probably be copied or passed down to the air acolytes and the new air nation. We see this in LOK in one aspect, the nuclear family’s, Tenzin was raised by Aang and Katara in a reasonably big family ,water tribe style, this is something him himself carried on to do. This is not the traditional way to raise or procreate as airnomads, but it would have also been very hard to to due to there only being one airbender. Air nomads get raised in air temples with several other people they aren’t or don’t know if they are related too. So Aang and Tenzin did have to have a nuclear family, but the way Tenzin family is is very much representing of how he was raised. In the water tribes I ca imagine is more common to have big family’s and a little detail that is a clea water tribe family aspect I noticed in LOK is when Tenzin and Pema are sleeping in bed and we see Meelo right in the middle also sleeping until he answers the phone. I imagine this is something Tenzin learned from his own childhood, to have little kids sleep between both their parents while they are still toddlers or very young children, we can’t be sure but it will probably happen that this would be seen in Meelo, Jinora, Ikki, and Rohan, when they are older in their own families, if they have kids. Either way when we think about the air nation having a mixed of aspects of the water tribe culture we can’t ignore the fact that the new air nation will most likely also bring Earth Nation traditions into the air nomad culture, I mean Opal isn’t going to completely leave the traditions she was raised in and she is still pretty young imagine an older person having to cut off the traditions they have known all their lives. So at the end how much effort does Tenzin need to put into keeping air nomad culture as alive as it can when the changes that are going to happen to it are so clearly going to continue. I mean am sure Aang knew for a fact that air nomad culture was never going to be the same again. It wouldn’t make a difference in the world if the culture wasn’t the exact same, it would be a great loss in history and extremely saddening for a entire culture that was so different to others be changed(one of the reasons I don’t want to read Yangchens books is to not see how much of this culture was really lost), but it is not crucial to the balance of the world. What was crucial was for their to be airbenders, how this people go on about bieng airbenders doesn’t really matter to the safety of the world.

You had known how to shoot a gun since you were a little girl. Not a marine style gun, but you know how to shoot a shotgun, and damn . . . Were you good. Those skills and the fact that you were a hard worker and had tough skin got you accepted to join the marines.

It was hard, especially around mostly men, and people who judged and doubted your every movement. But you were raised by your parents to believe in yourself, and you only needed yourself and some determination to get where you wanted to go . . . And that men were stupid (surprisingly, that one came from your father). That’s how you got here, cowboy hat on your head and bag and gear in hand as you walked towards the tent where you were sleeping. You had already talked to the Lieutenant colonel and were now being led by First lieutenant Nate Fick with a reporter from the Rolling Stone beside you.

You were making small chat, talking about why you were both here when you arrived at the tent. “Pappy. I gotta be at battalion for a while, so make sure nothing happens when I'm there,” Nate started as you stopped walking. You could’ve sworn you saw everyone’s mouth drop open. “This is a writer who's gonna embed with us. He's from Rolling Stone, so be gentle. This is Corporal Y/n Y/l/n and she’ll be joining us. Keep it in your pants.” He finished and headed out.

Pappy, as he was called, didn’t say anything before he finally shut his mouth. “Hey pretty mama-“ “don’t start that shit with me.” You told him. Men around you started to laugh. “Listen up!” You yelled out. “Number one: I don’t want to suck your dick and two: i will take your dick off if you touch me,” you looked around the room. “Now, if you would show me where I’m staying that would be much appreciated.” Brad could hear the southern twang in your voice and swore that even though his dick got hard from seeing a girl as hit as you, you would be annoying. Soon enough, you were headed away from base after some pizza and had learned who you would be with: the reporter who’s name was Evan, Brad Colbert, Ray Person, and Gabriel Garza. You sort of knew what you were expecting from them when Ray and some other guys found out Evan wrote beaver hunt, but it was a bit awkward when you first got in.

You had your gun out the window, focusing on the scenery ━━ if you could call it that ━━ instead of the silence when Ray started to talk. “So . . .” he started as Brad mumbled a “oh no”, “where are you from?” “Texas. Small little town in the buttfuck middle of Texas.” You told them, eyes still focused on the area around you. “Are you a cowgirl then?”

You raised your eyebrow and turned to look at him. “Sure. I mean, depends on what you mean by that.” “Oh you know . . . Like cowgirl. Like close to country but not country.” “Cowgirl is country.” You and Brad said at the same time. “Headed down south to the land of the pines, and I’m thumbin’ my way into North Caroline.” You started to sing softly when Brad let out a grunt. “No country.” You raised an eyebrow. “He hates country.” Ray clarified. “Oh, I guess we might have a problem then,” you replied, “you won’t like me.”

You were right. Brad didn’t like you. He knew you tried to stop being so much like yourself, but you were a literal cowgirl. Like if someone told him “picture a cowgirl” there you were. You and Ray always broke out into country songs and the southern twang is yours was just too much for him. Brad didn’t really want to get to know you, but when you two were on watch one night while everyone else in the Humvee slept, it couldn’t be helped. That is when Brad learned about who you truly were. You were totally as “country” as he thought, but you had a normal childhood. You went to school, had friends, and everything else Brad did. You weren’t homeschooled and didn’t have thousands of pigs and chickens. You had chickens, and horses, but no pigs . . . Or cows.

He learned about your dad and how he taught you to shoot, how he encouraged you to join the marines if that’s what you wanted, having to fight twice as hard to get the third of the recognition. It was nice talking to you, he realized, and revealed a lot about his childhood than he would’ve to anyone else. He didn’t know it yet, but there were feelings blooming in his chest, and yours too.

To everyone’s surprise ━━ except for Ray, because even though they acted like they hated each other, he knew Brad like the back of his hand ━━, you and Brad started to get along. After that night on watch, you both realized the other wasn’t as bad as you both thought. You thought Brad as an egotistical asshole to put it lightly, but you would still work with him and save his life (even if it was just because you didn’t want to do a fuck load of paperwork and make him say thank you), and then you learned who he actually was.

He was a marine who cared even if he didn’t act like it, be always put people first before him, and was a gentleman at heart. You two became a duo and were always seen together. Brad had become accustomed to you songs and would sometimes join in when you weren’t looking. You two would flirt with each other, and not knowing , you both meant it.

Well, you didn’t know the other meant what they said until there was a close enough call where one of you got confident enough.

You didn’t know it yet, but it was close to the end of the war. You, Gabe, Colbert, and Trombley were surveying a field outside of Al Kut as Humvee’s drove on the road beside you. You had come across a dead Iraqi in a firing position. “They all got blankets on to

hide their heat signatures, right, Sergeant Colbert?” Trombley asked as you all gathered around the dead man. “A week ago, they didn't know we could see their thermals at night. Now they're adapting.” Brad replied. You snorted, “Brad hate to break it to you, but I don’t think it worked for him.”

All of a sudden there was an explosion in front of you and you felt arms wrap around your waist and pull you down as the person who was holding you yell “get down!” You couldn’t hear what was happening around you, only Brad’s voice in your ear reassuring you it was going to be okay.

None of you moved until the shooting stopped. Brad kept his head down as he grabbed your radio and spoke into it. “Two Actual, this is Two One. Who the fuck is shooting at us?” “I’d like to know that too.” You added. “Fuckin' L.A.P.D. cops from Delta! They fucking love shooting Mexicans.” Gabe spoke up from beside you and you looked up and turned to him.

“It was Alpha, Gabe. Alpha. Mistakes happen.” Brad looked at him, then tried to get up. He helped you up and let your waist go. “Not mistakes like that, Brad.” You replied. “Everyone likes to shoot Mexicans, even Mexicans.” Trombley said.

The group of you started walking back to the group of Humvee’s on the road. “What was that back there, Mr. Colbert?” You teased him. “Pretty handsy if you asked me.” “No one asked you.” He shot back, small smirk on his face. “No, but don’t want to know if I liked or not?” “I know you did, not shut the hell up and kiss me.”

He roughly grabbed your waist again and pulled you in, pressing your lips to his. There were sounds of whistling and “Brad’s getting some!” but you didn’t give them any attention as you wrapped your hands around his collar and pulled him closer. When you pulled apart, your foreheads leaning together as your breath mingled with the others.

“You’re a dickhead, Brad Colbert.” You smiled. “Likewise, cowgirl.”

“I lost faith in the world a long time ago,” Brad said to you as you sat on the front of the Humvee, soaking in the few moments with these people who you learned to trust with your life, “but when I found you, you were my last hope . . . You still are.” You smiled at him as he wrapped his arms around you. “Even if you are a whiskey tango fuck.”

OKAY, buddy hcs (or at least some of them, i am trying to be so normal you can’t imagine. this guy lives in my head rent free)

a lot of my hcs about buddy also involve his family, just because the family stratification that happens in southern evangelical families is SO fascinating to me.

SO: buddy is a southern grandma’s boy. if you’ve lived in the south you know this guy. his grandma helped raise him, he calls his grandma ‘mimi’ and, to his grandma, he’s essentially the second coming of christ, he can do NO wrong in her eyes. buddy and pamela dawn have the kind of enmeshed relationship that would simply blow your mind

as an addendum to this: buddy dawn calls his grandma ‘mimi’ and his grandpa ‘pawpaw.’ if you are his friend, the whole family will invite you to participate in this naming tradition. this will make you uncomfortable but there’s no way out of it without seeming rude (this is a struggle i know well as a yank living in the south)

on the topic of pamela dawn, i think she’s like such a Matriarch, at least as much as one can be in that kind of misogynistic social system. i think she clings to what power she can grab and is incredibly vindictive (but never direct) about it. i think she was probably just as enmeshed and close with buddy’s dad (think #boymom) and probably HATED buddy’s mom, regardless of how good of a mom/person she was

we don’t know a lot about buddy’s parents, but my vibe is that they’re dead. if they weren’t, it doesn’t make sense to me that they would let bobby and pamela move away with their son (there are other hcs i’ve heard on this topic that are equally interesting, such as buddy’s mom and dad having a different idea of sol/helio worship and being pushed out of the family). my vibe is that they died on a mission trip. this explains why bobby didn’t just revivify them, but it also adds to the themes of legacy and family name that buddy has to contend with. like imagine if your grandpa is The Sol Televangelist Of All Time and your parents were martyred on a mission to the mountains of chaos?? oh the crushing pressure of familial expectations (and helio didn’t even choose you as his chosen one)

buddy’s legal name is robert. this one has no real evidence (in fact i feel like it’s likely that there’s no more to his name, at least canonically, than just buddy), but it makes sense to me that a man like bobby dawn would be obsessed with passing down his name and legacy. so i think it’s likely that his dad was also named robert (maybe called robbie or rob)

buddy’s name is specifically NOT robert, and that’s exactly why he got the nickname buddy. this hc is a bit more convoluted, but here’s the gist: imagine buddy’s mom didn’t name him robert despite all the familial pressure to do so. of course there’s nothing bobby or pamela can really do, but they can give this kid a nickname that’ll stick for the rest of his life. plus, buddy has always seemed like a kind of condescending nickname to me and i think that would piss off his mom even more (which tbf is what i think pamela’s goal would be). but, if buddy’s legal name isn’t robert, i don’t have any super strong contenders for what his legal name would be

I heard that in England, children of interracial Black-White parents aren't considered "Black" either legally or socially. Instead they are considered just "mixed". She'd still be Black in the American racial system, as well as "mixed race", which itself is not a separate racial category in the U.S. like "Asian", "Pacific islander", "Black", "white" are. It's used more as a descriptor before those legal terms, like "mixed raced Black person". Because in the U.S., what defines you as legally "Black" (therefore after years of slavery laws like that, visually and socially "Black as well") is the "one-drop rule" and grandfather clause. And HotD is American, writing primarily for a U.S. to Canadian based audience, with English (Brits) people--or any English speakers with close ties to England and therefore colonization/transatlantic slave trade & slavery.
