Chapter 7- The Meeting
The letter from Link has been haunting Zelda since sheâs read it. She had planned to meet with the resistance in two days, and even moved her schedule around for it, but Link was demanding to meet with them now. It seemed that they would be here tonight, but Zelda was struggling to make time to meet them.
During the many meetings, it was all she could think about. How she was going to get to Telmaâs bar, how she was going to disguise herself as Sheik, what she was going to say to Edmund and Amber. She was probably going to miss supper for this, but it was fine, this was more important than supper. She just wished that it hadnât happened so last minute.
Goddesses, why couldnât they wait two more days?
She didnât pay attention to any of the meetings, anxious to get them done and to leave to get to the next one. Sheâd nearly fallen asleep countless times, and Edmund would discreetly wake her back up so she wouldnât humiliate herselfâwhich she was grateful for. She really wasnât fit for any of this queen business at the moment, but there was so much to do, such little time.
As soon as the current meeting ended, Zelda found herself sitting in her chair, staring blankly at the wall instead of rushing to get to lunch. This was her only break, and she didnât have the energy to move. Edmund didnât move either, and he spoke to the nobles and representatives for Zelda as she stared. Soon the room was empty, and the two were left alone.
âZelda,â Edmund started softly.
âItâs fine, Edmund. I just need a moment.â
Edmund stared at her. âYou werenât at breakfast.â
âNo I was not.â
âYouâve missed breakfast these past few days.â
âI have.â
âAnd youâre about to miss lunch.â
âThatâs fine.â
âAnd you look like death.â
Zelda gave Edmund an annoyed look and he leaned forward. âZelda, youâre killing yourself. Why donât you tell me everything thatâs happening? Why donât you let me help?â
Zelda continued to stare silently, not in the mood to argue.
âLook, Iâm worried about you. I do⌠care about you. We were good friends as kids, and those memories I canât forget. I want you to be taken care of, is that so wrong?â
Zelda stayed silent.
âYouâre exhausted and youâre hungry,â Edmund continued when she said nothing, âI donât want to think about how dehydrated you are. Just, come to lunch, take a break, and take care of yourself.â
âI canât take a break whenever I want, I have too much to doââ
âOh my Labryn, Zelda, the nobles can wait! They can wait for you! You need to take care of yourself first!â
Zelda sighed and stood up. âIâm not in the mood for this right now, Edmund.â
âWhen will you be in the mood? When youâre on your deathbed? Iâm not wanting to wait until then!â
The queen didnât respond and went to walk away. It was childish to not say anything, but she was too tired to argue. Too tired to think of something to say. She was just⌠so tiredâŚ
She reached the door and leaned against the wall, holding her aching head. She suddenly felt lightheaded and sick to her stomach. She heard footsteps approach her from behind and she gave Edmund a glare.
âZelda?â
She huffed and reached for the door, but black dots appeared in her vision, and she felt herself begin to stagger.
âZelda!â
Her stomach did somersaults as she began to fall, and soon she was surrounded by darkness.

The sun was beginning to set as Rusl and Link arrived at castle town. They moved quickly through the field, and Link could tell Epona was enjoying the free movement. She had become just as stir-crazy as he did after his adventure, so when she had a chance to move around outside of Ordon, she clearly enjoyed herself. When they arrived, they quickly got off their horses and headed into the town, trying not to take up too much space with their large animals. Normally, Link would let Epona roam free in the field while he did his errands in town, but after what heâs found out, he decided against it. It took a while to get to the bar; surprisingly the town was busy despite the day coming to an end, and people were always blocking their way, causing the horses to grow upset with the small space. Rusl and Link finally were able to tie their horses to a post near Telmaâs bar where less people were at, and they hopped down the stairs and entered it. The bar was relatively empty, save for a few patrons who were quietly drinking by themselves. As usual, the place was dark and was only lit up by torches and candles scattered throughout. In the back, Telma and Auru were chatting at the table they all normally sat at, and Telmaâs face lit up when she saw the two men, quickly burying them both in a hug when they got close.
âLink! Rusl! Itâs so good to see you two!â She exclaimed, giving their shoulders a firm pat when she pulled away. Link smiled politely and let her lead the two men to the back table, where Auru was smiling.
âI figured youâd both be here tonight,â Auru said, ruffling Ruslâs hair as he sat down. âSo whatâs going on?â
âIâll explain everything after Ashei and Shad get here,â Rusl said simply, fixing his ruffled hair.
âHm, we sure theyâll be here tonight? This was pretty last minute.â Auru asked, leaning forward to look at both Rusl and Link.
âI know, I know itâs inconvenient but⌠itâs important,â Rusl frowned as Telma set down a mug of ginger ale in front of him, which he began to pick at mindlessly. âMe and Link found whatâs been causing these disappearances, thereâs no need to waste time anymore.â
Auru raised his eyebrows and he nodded knowingly. âWell then, that is quite important.â
Link nodded, staring at the milk in front of himâneither him nor his father bothered to drink anything. It was silent for a moment until Rusl awkwardly cleared his throat, catching Link and Auruâs attention.
âWell, weâre lucky youâre here, we wonât have to wait for you. Youâre a lot harder to get a hold of than the others,â Rusl stated with a smile, and Auru gave a hearty laugh.
âOh, my boy, I havenât left castle town in weeks.â
âDid Sheik send you a letter?â
âHe did. He told me to ask around castle town to gather information. Itâs the only thing Iâm capable of doing now,â Auru leaned back in his chair and stretched slowly, a pained expression on his face. âIâm getting too old for all this action.â
Rusl frowned and went back to staring at his drink. Link studied his fatherâs face, but it remained blank. When he really wanted to be, he was a master at hiding his emotions. There was a moment of silence again, being interrupted by Telma coming by to bring food for the two men, and Link couldnât help but cheer softly.
âOh goddesses, thank you Telma,â he said, already digging in, âIâm starvinâ.â
Telma laughed and patted his shoulder. âI figured youâd both be hungry from the journey!â
âAw, you didnât have to do that, Telma,â Rusl chuckled slightly, and Telma lightly punched his shoulder.
âOh, you hush, itâs the least I can do for my friends! Now eat up while we wait for the lovebirds to arrive!â
Link stared at Telma as she walked away, and he turned to look at Auru. âAre Ashei and Shadââ
âEngaged.â
Linkâs mouth dropped. âEngaged? When did this happen?â
âA couple of weeks ago.â
Rusl and Link both glanced at each other in shock. Link knew that there was something going on between them, but after ten years, he figured that it was nothing.
âHow did you know about this?â Link asked.
âThey announced it when they stopped by,â Auru explained, gesturing with his hands. âI hang around here most of the time so me and Telma got to hear about it.â
âItâs about time,â Rusl scoffed, a teasing smile on his lips. âThose two were drivinâ me crazy!â
âNo kidding! Itâs a little late though. I doubt Ashei would be able to have kids at her age.â
Ruslâs face scrunched up. âWhat are you talkinâ about? Sheâs barely thirty! And youâre a fool if you think that Ashei and Shad would even want kids.â
âOh come now, theyâre good with kids!â
Rusl gave Link a look and he snorted. They both knew that they were terrible with kids. They could keep them alive, but they couldnât keep them from crying. Auru rolled his eyes and waved his hand away.
âI just think itâs a waste to get married and then not have kids.â
âThatâs an old way of thinking, Auru,â Rusl said, finally taking a sip of his ginger ale. âSome people donât need to have kids. It ainât our business what they want to do anyways.â
Auru scoffed slightly, but he didnât continue. Link continued to eat in silence, not realizing how sloppy he was being. He was ravenous. He felt Auru watching him and he looked up.
âWhat?â
âYouâre eating like a growing teenage boy. When was the last time you ate?â Auru teased slightly, and Link scratched the back of his head.
âItâs⌠actually been less than two days,â he muttered, giving Rusl a look. Neither of them ate dinner before searching the woods. They spent the next day sleeping and then the whole day traveling. Auruâs eyes widened when Rusl and Link remained silent, both having guilty looks on their faces.
âNeither of you have eaten in two days?â He asked, shocked.
âMaybe a bit longer than thatââ Link muttered, and Rusl jabbed at him lightly.
âItâs fineââ Rusl quickly said, but Auru shook his head.
âEat that food Telma gave you, boy!â He commanded in a stern tone. Rusl quickly turned to the food and started eating it, looking like a guilty kid. Link snorted slightly and his pa glared him down. Auru patted his back with a satisfied look and leaned back.
âMustâve been a crazy few days. What did Sheik have you do?â
âHe wanted us to investigate a missing woman and Goron from Kakariko,â Link answered since Ruslâs mouth was full of bread.
âAh, so thatâs how you found it.â
Link glanced at Rusl who went back to staring blankly at the food. Auru picked up on the mood change and frowned.
âWhat is it?â
âWeâll explain when Shad and Ashei get here,â Rusl said quietly. Auru looked between the two and frowned.
âAlright,â he said, a worried look on his face as he stared at Rusl. It grew silent at the table again and the old man glanced up, his face lighting up. âSpeaking ofâŚâ
Link turned around and saw Ashei and Shad walking to the group. Ashei looked annoyed while Shad smiled at the group. Rusl turned as well and shot up from his seat, marching towards the two.
âHey! You two jerks!â He shouted, pulling them both into a hug. âYou canât just get engaged and not tell me!â
âWell next time, be here when we visit!â Shad teased, hugging him back. Ashei smiled slightly and gave Link a nod as he walked up to the two.
âWhenâs the wedding?â Rusl asked, his hands on the twoâs arms.
âDonât know yet, weâre just playing it by ear,â Shad answered, looking at Ashei who nodded.
âWeâre in no rush,â she added.
âWell, you better have me as your best man, alright?â Rusl said with a smirk.
âMy dear Rusl, I wouldnât have it any other way!â Shad laughed. He glanced at Link and walked towards him. âAnd how are you doing, old boy?â
Link chuckled and gave him a side hug. âIâm doinâ fine. Iâm happy for yâall!â
âOh thank you,â Shad glanced at Ashei who was chatting with Rusl, a happy expression on his face. âI wouldnât have imagined being with her, but here we are.â
âLove is a fickle thing, isnât it?â
âIndeed it is.â
Rusl and Ashei walked up to the two. âLetâs sit down and talk, yeah?â Ashei started, âI want to know why you both were so intent on meeting today.â
âWe canât, not without Sheik,â Rusl sighed, sitting down. âHeâs not here yet.â
âThis has been eating me up inside, and youâre saying I have to wait longer?â Shad said lightheartedly.
Ashei pulled Shad down in the seat next to hers and gave him a look. âSheik may be busy, this was pretty last minute, yeah?â
âSo Iâve been told,â Rusl grumbled. Auru patted him on the shoulder with a chuckle, and the group started to lightly poke fun at Rusl. Telma came by with food and drinks for the couple that arrived, and she closed the curtains to give them privacy.
âTell me when you start talking about what happened,â she said, âI still have work to do, but Iâll be sure to kick everyone out.â
âSure thing Telma,â Link said with a nod, and the curtains were fully closed, leaving the group isolated from the drunkards that came to the bar.
âSo⌠what did Sheik have you two do?â Link asked the couple, and they glanced at each other.
âSheik told us to help investigate the disappearances with a captain named Hoz,â Ashei answered. âWe really werenât finding anything of importance though.â
âAh, did you come here with him?â
âNo, he was quite intent on continuing the investigations,â Shad jumped in, pushing his glasses up his nose. âThat was the most focused soldier of Hyrule Iâve ever met.â
âItâs good, Hyrule needs more men like him,â Ashei said, staring at her drink.
âThough he was sort of a pain to work with,â Shad mumbled.
Ashei snorted. âHe was. Everything needed to go his way otherwise he would implode.â
â... Does Hyrule still need more men like him?â Auru asked cheekily, and Ashei glared at him.
âYes.â
Shad laughed slightly and sat up straight. âYes yes, he was still good to work with. Iâm glad that some soldiers are still trying to do their jobs.â
Ashei gave a knowing nod and took a sip of her drink as the others mumbled in agreement. The group started to chat about mundane things, how they were doing, how the families were doing, and what they had planned afterwards. Link was constantly looking over his shoulder, expecting Sheik to suddenly appear (which he did every time they met up), yet there was no sign of him. Rusl was getting more anxious as the evening went on, constantly fidgeting with his hands or pacing the small room, pretending to be observing the wall. Soon it became too lateâthe bar was fully empty as Telma closed it down and kicked out angry drunks, and the only area lit up was the back room where the resistance sat. Yet no sign of Sheik, and Auru finally let out a loud sigh.
âI donât think Sheik is coming.â
âWe just need to be patient,â Ashei said, âsheâs a busy person.â
Auru frowned. ââShe?â You think Sheikâs a woman?â
Asheiâs eyes widened for a moment, but she quickly recovered. âW-well, Sheik is just a mysterious person, thatâs all. I uh⌠say she could be a woman⌠or⌠something.â
The group stared at Ashei who stared hard at her drink.
âAnd what makes you think theyâre a woman?â Auru pressed, a teasing smile on his lips.
âWhat makes you think theyâre a man?â Ashei snapped back, getting angry. Auru raised his hands defensively.
âIâm just teasing you. You just never get flustered like that!â
Ashei glared at him and started cursing under her breath in frustration. Shad cleared his throat, wrapping an arm around her.
âWell, it doesnât matter if Sheik is a man or a woman, what matters is that theyâre not here right now.â He glanced up at Rusl who was still pacing back and forth near a corner. âWe should start without them.â
Ashei sighed and nodded, a defeated look on her face. Auru nodded as well and stood up to drag Rusl back to the table. Link stared worriedly at his pa as he sat down, his face drained of all blood as he stared blankly at the table.
âGoddesses, are you alright?â Shad asked, and Rusl waved his concern away.
ââM fine,â he mumbled. The group didnât seem convinced by that answer, but they didnât say anything else.
âWell, Link, Rusl,â Auru started, âtell us what happened. What is taking these missing people?â
Link glanced at Rusl who was still staring at the table, and he stood up, deciding to lead the conversation.
âDo you guys remember the shadow beasts?â
The group all froze, staring at Link with wide eyes.
âShadow beasts? You mean those horrible black creatures that plagued all of Hyrule during the Twilight invasion?â Shad asked, and Link nodded.
âYes, I⌠me and my pa found one in the woods⌠two nights ago,â Link frowned for a moment, that night feeling ages ago. He continued, âI think itâs a shadow beast thatâs gotten stronger for the past ten years. Itâs whatâs been taking these people.â
âOh⌠LabrynâŚâ Ashei muttered under her breath.
âHow do you know itâs the cause of all these disappearances?â Auru asked.
âWeâuhââ Link glanced at Rusl who was still unmoving. âWe sorta⌠found out the hard wayâŚâ
âOh no⌠did someoneâ?â Shad started, but Link quickly stopped him.
âNo, no itâs ok. I was able to stop the abduction but⌠I think itâs pretty obvious that this⌠mutated shadow beast is whatâs causing all the disappearances.â
âOk,â Ashei breathed out, âso itâs one of those shadow beasts, a little mutated, but we know what it is now. We should go out looking for it, yeah?â
Link pursed his lips. âYes, but⌠be warned. I fought so many of those things by myself back thenââ
âYes you did! You were marvelous with the way you slashed them with your sword!â Shad exclaimed, swinging his arm around as if he had a weapon. Link smiled but it quickly went away.
âYeah, well⌠I fought this one, and it didnât die no matter what I did, so⌠I think we should be careful. We canât underestimate this thing.â
The group nodded.
âAlright, well, thank you for telling us Link,â Auru said. âNo one in Castle Town described anything like that.â
âNo kidding,â Ashei replied and Link nodded glumly. This wouldnât have happened if he hadnât let such a thing live, he couldnât help but feel guilty over it.
âWell, itâs late, we can discuss plans tomorrow, but in the meantime, I think we should all get some rest,â Auru stared sternly at Rusl and Link, âyou two especially. I can tell you need it.â
Link smiled slightly and Rusl got up quietly, leaving the room in an instant. The group stared in shock as he disappeared behind the curtain. Auru looked at Link and pointed at where Rusl left.
âIs he alright?â
âI⌠I donât knowâŚâ Link looked down, debating on whether he should tell them the details of what happened, but he really didnât want to, and he didnât know if Rusl would want him to. âHeâs probably just tired⌠the uh⌠the shadow beast was⌠aggressive to say the least. Iâm gonna go talk to him real quick.â
He felt everyoneâs eyes on him as he left, and he glanced at Telma who looked worried, but she forced a smile when she saw Link.
âDid you all start the conversation without me?â
âOhâ goddesses Telma Iâm so sorryââ
Telma waved his apology away. âIâll make the others tell me. Rusl went upstairs, sweet pea.â
Link nodded and slowly walked up the stairs, his entire body suddenly feeling heavy. He glanced around at the secret upstairs inn, trying to remember which one was normally reserved for him and Rusl. He poked his head in the first room, finding Rusl laying on one of the beds, his hands resting on his face. Rusl flinched when he sensed another person near him, but he quickly relaxed when it was Link.
âSpirits, Link,â he chuckled, lying back down. Link smiled and sat down on the other bed across from him.
âPa⌠are youâŚ?â He started, but he stopped when Rusl glanced at him. Ruslâs face didnât hold any annoyance, but instead guilt. He sat up and sighed.
âIâm ok, Link. Iâm⌠sorry for how I was acting down there⌠I justâŚâ Rusl paused for a moment before sighing again, resting against the wall. Link tilted his head
âWhat?â
âOh⌠itâs not your burden to bear.â
âWell⌠I kinda already know why youâre upset so⌠hiding it from me is a fruitless effort.â
Rusl grinned slightly. âI suppose so⌠I justâŚ. Ever since that night Iâve been feeling so⌠terrified every waking momentânoâeven when Iâm trying to sleep Iâm terrified, I justââ he stopped himself and rubbed his face. âI donât know.â
Link frowned. âI know the shadow beasts would turn people into other shadow beasts, maybe youâre still feeling the effects from that?â
Rusl shrugged, a disturbed look on his face.
âYou⌠also were almost eaten,â Link chuckled darkly, âthat would traumatize anyone.â
Rusl smirked slightly, but it quickly went away, so Link continued.
âI mean⌠I know Iâve nearly been eaten myself. So many times. By giant plants, and a giant eel, and wolfos trying to tear me to pieces, and spiders, and I guess smaller plants too, plus another giant spider, and possibly a lot of other things andââ
Ruslâs face had grown more concerned the longer Link rambled, and he quickly tried to recover.
âI-I mean, I turned out fine! Maybe? I mean maybe I havenât turned out fine butâbut itâs fine! Iâve kinda gotten used to it, everything trying to eat me. Heh, it makes me wonder if I taste good. I mean Midna will definitely say that I taste good but, you knowââ
âLink, I donât need to know this,â Rusl interrupted him, though he almost seemed amused. Link blushed slightly and scratched the back of his head.
âS-sorry, that kinda came out.â
Rusl chuckled slightly, which made Link feel a little better. He observed his fatherâs tired face and frowned.
âPa⌠you should get some rest.â
Rusl raised an eyebrow. âDoting and worrying is supposed to be my job Link, not yours.â
âWell, who did I get it from?â Link rebutted, and Rusl laughed.
âCorrection then: doting is a parentâs job.â
âBut I am a parent.â
âNot my parent!â
Link snorted and Rusl joined him in his laughter. It felt good to laugh after these past few days. Link sniffed and sighed, staring at Ruslâs bed.
âYou should get some rest though, Pa.â
âYou should get some rest too, Link.â
Link pursed his lips and looked down, shifting uncomfortably.
âNot as much as you.â
Rusl raised an eyebrow. âHow much sleep have you gotten in the past forty-eight hours?â
Link clamped his mouth shut. âI⌠um⌠like⌠fourâŚ. hoursâŚ?â
Rusl smirked and gestured for him to come over. Link sighed and trudged over to him, the lack of sleep catching up to him. He rested against Ruslâs side while he wrapped his arm around him, and Link finally relaxed. It always felt good to be held by one of his parents. Being an adult, it didnât happen as often compared to when he was a kid. Rusl started playing with the tip of his ear and he lightly kissed his forehead.
âIâm proud of you, Link,â he said softly.
âFor what?â
âFor becoming the man you are today. Youâre a good person, determined, and kind. And Iâm proud of you for it.â
Link smiled slightly. âBut you and ma raised me to be that way.â
âOh, we were only trying to nudge you kids in the right direction. Ultimately, it was you who chose to become a good person. Give yourself more credit.â
Link sighed and drowsiness began to get the better of him.
âThanks. I love you pa.â
Sleep began to take over him as he heard his pa say one last thing.
âI love you too, my son.â
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Zelda awoke with a jolt. She was in her bed, her heavy dress was replaced with a lighter one, and her daughter was reading a book by her side. She rubbed her eyes and sat up, startling Amber.
âMother! Youâre awake!â She exclaimed, closing her book. âWe were so worried!â
Zelda looked around the room, confused. How long has she been out?
âFather came to me and asked me to stay by your side! I hadnât left once!â Amber continued. âIâve just been reading this book about birds, Iâm hoping to find one to match the birds Hylians used to ride, but so far none of them have been big enoughâŚâ
âAmber,â Zelda rubbed her eyes, still feeling exhausted. âWhereâs your father?â
âHeâs in meetings right now, he said heâll come by to see if youâre awake!â
Zelda groaned and rubbed her face. What had been happening while she was out? She hated not being in control of everything.
âI hope youâre alright,â Amber added quietly, and Zelda glanced over at her. She had a worried look on her face, and she couldnât help but smile.
âIâm fine, thank you for watching over me,â Zelda said with a smile, and Amber beamed at the praise.
âIâm so glad mother! Do you want me to fetch you some supper? Itâs a little late butââ
âWait, how long have I been asleep?â
âOh! Um⌠a few hours.â
Zelda tried to hide her frustration, and she turned away as she groaned. She didnât have time for this. She still needed to meet with the resistance! If she didnât leave nowâŚ
Amber gasped as Zelda started to get out of bed, ignoring the vertigo that assaulted her.
âUm⌠mother? Father told me to make sure you stayed in bed a-andââ
âIâll be fine, Amber,â Zelda grumbled, but she knew she wouldnât be. It didnât matter though, she needed to be somewhere.
âBut⌠father saidâŚâ Amberâs voice trailed off, and Zelda heard another person enter the room.
âZelda,â Edmundâs voice called out, and she sighed. Great.
âFather!â Amber hopped up and ran to him. âMotherâs awake! Do you want me to get a meal for her?â
âNo, I already sent a maid to do that, my dear. You go get yourself to bed.â
Amber nodded and looked back at Zelda. âGoodnight mother.â
Zelda smiled slightly. âGoodnight Amber.â
She lingered for a moment, her mouth agape, but she finally turned away and left the room. Edmund and Zelda remained silent, both staring intensely at each other. Finally, Edmund let out a huff and started to walk forward.
âIâm glad youâre awake,â he said, âI brought you something.â
Zelda frowned. âWhat is it?â
Edmund sat down on the bed with her and handed her a little box. She carefully opened it to reveal a chocolate orange. She blinked several times, wondering if the lack of sleep had finally caught up to her and that she was hallucinating it. But the smell hit her nostrils, and she lightly traced the chocolatey edges.
âI remember you loved these things as a kid,â Edmund muttered, a nostalgic smile on his face. âI always hated them, but I did enjoy eating one slice with you whenever you had them.â
Zelda couldnât help but smile as she grabbed a slice of the chocolate. She glanced at Edmund and her smile dropped slightly.
âHow do you know I still love these?â She asked, and Edmund took in a quiet, deep breath.
âDo you?â
Zelda looked down and put one in her mouth. The chocolate instantly melted as it hit her tongue, the sweet flavor mixing with the tanginess of the orange rewarding her taste buds, and she couldnât help but close her eyes in satisfaction. She hasnât had one of these in years.
âIt seems you still like it,â Edmund chuckled. Zelda opened her eyes and turned away, embarrassed.
âYes,â she mumbled. Edmund hummed and leaned back, resting on his hands.
âIâm glad.â
Zelda turned to look at him, his mustache lifted up with his smile. âWhyâd you bring this to me?â She asked.
âOh, I figured youâd need an energy boost. Chocolate does wonders for that,â Edmund reached for a slice. âMay I?â
Zelda nodded and offered one to him. He took a slice and bit into half of it. His face scrunched up in disgust and he covered his mouth. âEugh, I still donât like it.â
Zelda smiled and almost let out a giggle. âThatâs quite a shame, theyâre so delightful.â
Edmund grinned and stared at the uneaten slice. âI probably shouldâve put the full thing in my mouth, now what will I do with this?â
Zelda stared at it for a moment, and before she could even think, she plucked it out of his hand.
âCanât let it go to waste,â she said before putting the rest of the slice in her mouth. Edmund looked surprised but his expression softened into a pleasant smile. Zelda looked away, her face flushing slightly, and she picked at the remaining chocolates. âThank you for this Edmund, that was very thoughtful of you.â
Edmund nodded. âOf course. I⌠I just want to help out.â
It grew silent between the twoâany feeling of contentment was gone in an instant. Edmund picked up on Zeldaâs discomfort and he let out a sigh.
âWhy wonât you accept my help?â
Zelda glanced up at him. Where an accusatory and bitter tone normally was, this time, there was just curiosity. He was trying, it was only fair that Zelda tried as well.
But could she trust him?
It was kind of him to try to help her, but was he trying to manipulate her into trusting him? She remembered her father always showering her mother with gifts whenever he did something to upset her. It was always a way to regain her trust. Was Edmund trying to do the same?
âListen, becoming the king of Hyrule hasnât been an easy transition for me,â Edmund started, his back turned to Zelda, âLabrynna gives its power to the king, but here in Hyrule, all of the power goes to the queen.â He let out a breath while Zelda remained silent. Heâs never told her this before. âI admit Iâve feltâŚ. Emasculated as a result, and Iâve been acting childish because of it. For that I am sorry.â He glanced back at Zelda, an almost worried expression on his face, but Zelda stayed quiet. âBut, I feel useless. I feel like Iâm being used for my connection to my family, and that Iâm nothing more than an object to your people and⌠I suppose thatâs why Iâve been⌠frustrated about you keeping things to yourself. But⌠looking at you now, Iâve grown more worried than upset. Youâve overworked yourself so much to the point that you collapsed. Thatâs not a good thing. I suppose I⌠I just want to know why youâre so intent on doing everything yourself, when Iâm here to⌠help you.â
Zelda stared at him for a moment, his emerald green eyes never leaving hers. For once, Zelda couldnât find her words. She knew she should try to communicate with himâhe was being so open with her, but why? Was he trying to worm his way into her life? Or was he being genuine? Heâs never taken the time to sit down and talk to her about things, but then again, Zelda never gave him the chance. Did he deserve her to try to be open as well? She turned away, emotions running rampant. She couldnât cry, it wasnât queenly to do so, but she was so tired. She took a deep breath to control herself.
âI⌠I donât know if I can trust you,â she finally said softly. She felt Edmund shift beside her.
âWhy?â
âIâIâve watched my father strip my mother of all her power. He took everything away from her, ruled Hyrule as a tyrant, and took control of every aspect of my life. It doesnât matter if Hyrule gives the power to the queen, the king can take over and I canât let that happen again. Itâs happened to me twice now and⌠I just⌠Iââ She hiccuped slightly and she rubbed her exhausted eyes. It was quiet as she once again tried to take control of her emotions, and she glanced up at Edmund, who looked horrified.
âI had no idea,â he finally said. âI alwaysâ I know we didnât see each other a lot but⌠I didnât knowâŚâ
Zelda sniffed and sat up straight. âMy father did a good job at hiding it. And he made sure I hid it as well.â
Edmund gave her a sad look. âIâm so sorry. IâŚâ He grew silent for a moment. â... thank you for telling me. Iâll leave you be. A maid should come by with food for you.â
âI-I canât stay I need toââ
âZelda.â Edmund gave her a firm look. âIâŚI ask that you give yourself rest and proper nourishment, please.â
Zelda stared for a moment, remembering the resistance. âI canât. I still need to meet up withââ she stopped herself and Edmund raised an eyebrow.
âWith⌠your friends that are taking care of the disappearances?â
Zelda pursed her lips. âYes.â
âPerhaps I can meet with them in your stead.â
She shook her head quickly. âNo Iââ they didnât know that she was the queen; if Edmund came instead, they would figure it out, even if one already knew about it. And she certainly couldnât tell Edmund about Sheik. Frustration was apparent on Edmundâs face, and he sucked in a sharp breath and stood up.
âSo are you just going to keep pushing yourself until you die? Sure, you may not trust me, I understand that. But you have representatives, diplomats, nobles, even guards that could go in your stead! Why canât you utilize them?â
âEdmund. I. Canât. A-at leastâŚâ Zelda looked down, her eyes going back and forth between the chocolate orange, the bed, and Edmund. He did have a point; she couldnât keep going on like this. She really could end up dying from her neglect, which would be an awful thing for Amber and for the resistance. But she knew no one could help the resistance with the disappearances. She had to take care of that herself. But⌠perhaps with everything elseâŚ. Goddesses, she hoped she wasnât making a mistake. âCould you⌠just take care of the meetings tomorrow? I must deal with these disappearances on my own.â
Edmundâs expression softened and he nodded. âIâll take care of them.â
Zelda smiled. âThank you.â
âWill you⌠visit Amber before you leave anywhere?â
Her lips parted and she nodded. Edmund nodded back, and for the first time in years, there was a mutual understanding between them. Edmund hesitated for a moment before finally turning to leave. Zelda was left alone, and she contemplated everything that had just happened.
She collapsed after a meeting and slept through the entire day. Her daughter stayed by her side while Edmund took care of the rest of the day. He brought her chocolates and they had a conversation that didnât result in them fighting. They opened up to each other⌠and nowâŚ
She sighed. She needed to meet with the resistance, that was her first priority. Hopefully it wasnât too late.
She wasted no time to get into her disguise, despite her exhausted body and rumbling stomach. Just as she was about to sneak out, she remembered what Edmund asked of her.
âWill you⌠visit Amber before you leave anywhere?â
She sighed. Sheâs been a terrible mother to her own daughter, not spending any time with her despite Amber desperately wanting to. If the resistance needing to meet up tonight hadnât been about the missing people, she probably would have been tempted to stay. Maybe spend time with her family, her daughter, and try to be the mother Amber deserved. But she knew this was important; it had better be important. She needed to take care of this, and she needed to find the missing people so that Hyrule would be safe for Amber. If the resistance found out important information about the disappearancesâlike where the missing people wereâshe would personally go to rescue them herself and eradicate any threat that came in her way. This threat would come to an end, Zelda would make sure of it.
But it meant she would be gone for a while. So she didnât know when she would see Amber again.
Zelda quietly snuck into Amberâs room, her daughter curled up in her bed, clutching a bird stuffed animal to her chest. She brought her mask down and walked up to her daughter, emotions going through her once again. Her sweet little Amber, growing up before her very eyes, and she was missing all of it.
Her hand brushed against Amberâs temple and she began to stir. She looked up at her mother and furrowed her brow.
âMother?â
Zeldaâs breath hitched and she helped Amber sit up.
âAmber,â she started, âI know⌠I know I havenât been the best mother, but I want you to know that I love you with every fiber of my being.â Zelda pulled Amber close and hugged her. âI love you so much.â
She rocked her back and forth, Amber clinging to her tightly. Despite her dry eyes, Zelda found tears forming, and she had to choke back a sob. Amber however wasnât hiding her crying, and she felt her tears soaking into her clothes. She finally pulled back, wiping away a tear on Amberâs cheek and rested her forehead against hers.
âI promise Iâll try to be better,â Zelda whispered, pecking her on the forehead, and she stood up, walking towards the door.
âM-mother?â Amber called out.
âIâll be back,â Zelda promised. âJust stay here with your father and focus on your studies. I⌠I love you.â
âI love you tooâŚâ
Zeldaâs heart hurt more than her aching body as she turned away. How many times has she turned her own daughter away? How many times has she brushed her off when Amber reached out? She ran out, her frustrations over herself giving her the energy she needed to escape the castle. How will Amber view her when she grew older? Would she resent her the same way Zelda resented her father? Would she feel unloved by her own mother? She stopped as she reached the entrance to the courtyard, looking back at the castle. She was panting heavily, sad and angry tears finally pouring down her face.
It didnât matter what her father tried to do to her, Zelda never felt worthy of being queen. She didnât feel worthy of anything in her life. Especially her own daughter.
Amber deserved a better mother.
For a moment as she stared at her castle, she thought she saw Edmund watching her, but his supposed silhouette went away in an instant. She turned away, her head hanging, and finally marched to Telmaâs bar.
It was late, she didnât know how late it was, but it was late enough for no one to be out in the streets save for a few guards. Sheikâs stomach was cramping terribly, and her throat and tongue felt like sandpaper. She almost wished she stayed behind to eat the food Edmund got for her, but she knew she couldnât let the resistance down. She leaned against a wall catching her breath, her hand rubbing against a box in her pouch. She didnât know why she grabbed the chocolate orange Edmund gave her; she supposed she couldnât leave it behind. She continued onward to Telmaâs bar, feeling that it was a much longer walk than what she remembered. She normally went through the dungeons to reach Telmaâs bar, but from how she was feeling, she didnât have the strength to go that way. As if to prove her right, her knees nearly buckled as she went down the stairs, causing her to stumble into the door. She pulled back and blinked harshly trying to clear her head. She took a deep breath to calm herself and she went inside. The bell rang loudly through the empty bar, announcing her presence.
âSorry, weâre closed right now,â she heard Telma call out from the back. The barmaid poked her head from the curtains and her face lit up. âSheik! Well, itâs about time you got here, honey!â
Sheik awkwardly shuffled forward, allowing herself to be hugged by Telma.
âS-sorry Iâm late,â she mumbled, not caring if Telma heard her or not.
âOh⌠itâs not me you should apologize to. The others have already gone to bed, save for Ashei and Shadâ well⌠actually itâs just Ashei,â Telma laughed slightly. Sheik was disappointed that the others had already gone to sleep, it was much later than what she hoped for, but she was slightly relieved that Ashei was the only one awake save for Telma. Though Sheik had tried to keep her Royal identity a secret, Ashei had found out about it. She had to admit, it was nice not having to hide everything from one person. She could at least confide in her with everything that has been happening.
âMy, you look terrible,â Telma continued, eyeing Sheik worriedly. âHere, let me whip you up something real quickââ
âOh, no you donât have to do thatââ a loud grumble from her stomach interrupted her and Telma raised an eyebrow. Sheik looked down, embarrassed. âApologies.â
âYouâre alright sweetheart, just head to the back and Iâll get you some soup.â
Sheik nodded and walked to the back where she saw Ashei and Shad sitting next to each other. Shad was asleep, his head against Asheiâs shoulder, while Ashei had her arm wrapped around him. She had a pleasant smile on her lips as she watched him, until she looked up, spotting Sheik.
âAre you going to sit down, or are you going to keep watching us like a creep?â She asked, and Sheik straightened.
âA-apologies⌠I didnât mean to stare.â
âDonât worry about it, yeah?â Ashei glanced at Shad, then back at her. âI wanted to stay up to wait for you. I knew youâd get here eventually. He was intent on staying up with me, but I guess he couldnât do it.â
Sheik smiled despite Ashei not being able to see it. âIâm sorry I came so late.â
âYouâre fine, but what happened? Why did it take so long for you to get here?â
âIâŚâ Sheik didnât want to talk about her fainting today, nor about her lack of sleep, food, and water. âIâve just been very busy.â
Ashei studied her for a moment. âAre you alright?â
Sheik looked up at her, and simply shook her head. âIâve been very busy,â she repeated.
âLabryn⌠ZelâSheik, you can leave this to the rest of us. You donât have to help us every second, yeah?â
âI know, but Iâm tired of sitting here not knowing whatâs going on. Not actively trying to better my kingdom.â
Ashei shook her head. âYou canât do everything by yourself. Thatâs why the resistance is here, to help Hyrule.â
âI know⌠I know⌠I justâŚâ Sheik sighed. Goddesses she was exhausted. The two grew silent until Telma came in with a bowl.
âI could only make some broth, I hope thatâs ok, sweet pea.â
Sheik felt herself beginning to drool and she gratefully took the bowl. âThis is wonderful, thank you, Telma,â she said. Telma gave her a soft smile.
âOf course honey! Thatâs why Iâm here, to take care of my friends.â
The word âfriendsâ stuck with Sheik, and she looked down at the bowl, her emotions running rampant once again, though her eyes were finally too dry to cry again.
âNow, if you two will excuse me, Iâm going to head to bed myself.â Telma turned to Ashei with a teasing smile. âUnless you need me to carry him to bed of course.â
Ashei gave her an annoyed smirk. âI can do that myself. Thank you though.â
The barmaid gave a hearty laugh. âAlright, good night you too. And Sheik? I have some water on the table for you. Take care.â
Sheik glanced at the cup on the table, her thirst becoming unbearable.
âThank you,â she said again, and Telma turned away, leaving the two women alone. Sheik glanced around, eyeing Shad cautiously, and Ashei caught on.
âDonât worry, heâs out like a light.â
âBut what if he wakes up and sees me without my mask?â
âThen Iâll knock him back out, yeah?â
Sheik chuckled softly and pulled her mask down. Though it wasnât filling, the broth was amazing, and the water made her feel much better than before. She sighed as she drank the broth, feeling relief run through her body as she finally got nutrients in her body. She glanced at Ashei who watched her worriedly, and she looked down.
âHow was Hoz?â Sheik asked.
âOh, he was fine. Quite determined to find the missing people. Heâs a good man.â
Sheik smiled slightly. âIndeed, he is. What did Link and Rusl need?â
Asheiâs breath hitched. âThey found whatâs been causing these disappearances.â
Sheik gasped and nearly dropped her bowl. Though it was exactly what she had hoped for, she was still surprised that it actually happened. âWhat is it? Whatâs causing it?â
âLink thinks itâs a shadow beast.â
Dread instantly filled Sheikâs body. Memories of the beasts breaking through her castle and slaughtering the guards came in at once, and she clenched her fists. HowâŚ?
âWe hope to make a plan to hunt and kill it, but according to Link, itâs gotten powerful over the past ten years, and it wonât die so easily.â
Sheik swallowed hard and nodded. âI see⌠any⌠any news on the people?â
Ashei shook her head sadly. âNo, they only mentioned the beast Iâm afraid.â
Sheik slumped slightly. If it was a shadow beast taking these people then⌠they probably werenât alive anymore. She remembered watching Zant turn her guards into shadow beasts before her eyes, even those who werenât personally cursed turned when beside them. Even her own parents turned into creatures of darknessâŚ
Were the people dead? Or had they turned into shadow beasts, doomed to be mindless monsters until theyâre put out of their misery? Sheik didnât know. But if that were the case, wouldnât they have known about the resurgence of shadow beasts? Either way, Sheik was having a hard time being hopeful about the fate of the missing people.
âWeâre going to be doing a lot of planning tomorrow,â Ashei continued, âI donât know when weâll head out, but if youâre wanting to come with us, I suggest you get some rest, yeah?â
Sheik looked up at Ashei who had a firm expression on her face. Sheik had grown tired of everyone telling her to rest, but with the food and water in her system, she couldnât fight back the sleepiness.
âAlright,â she mumbled before standing up, staring at her empty bowl confused.
âI can take care of that,â Ashei said, and Sheik set it down awkwardly. âWe can talk more tomorrow, yeah?â
Sheik nodded and dragged herself up the stairs where several rooms were hidden. Her eyes were barely open as she tried to find a room to go in. She typically took the first room, so she opened the door and threw her head cover and mask off, closing the door behind her which left the room in total darkness. She stumbled over to the bed closest to her and fell asleep before her head could even hit the pillow.
Tonight is a great night to think fondly on Haleth and Caranthir. I think they would make such a funny couple.
Imagine??? The Big Tall Broody Scowling Kinslayer Who Is Also The One Reason The Economy Is Functioning At All Between The Different Races/Elvish Factions Who Probably Is Dying To Tell King Thingol/His Cousins To Fuck Off At Any Given Moment and hes looming over this short human lady??
This short human lady that Can, Will, and Already Has told him to pull the stick out of his ass and bullies him into doing normal townsfolk chores??? Lord Carathir, Master Economist and a Weaver with the skill to rival his grandmother, sitting there and darning socks cause his tiny mortal wife told him too. His reward will be a kiss on the cheek but she'll scold him while he does it because he said a mean thing about his Cousin Finrod in his last letter to her while he KNEW Finrod was visiting her.
Only three things in the world keep Caranthir in check: His Eldest Brother, The Lord Himring, The Current Head of the Feanorian Faction of Noldor, and Former High King; the idea that if he didn't complete his brothers' tax paperwork and run the Trade Routes then the Nolofinweans and Arafinweans would become more economincally important And We Cant Have That; and his 4'11 wife he met bloodied and wrathful on a battlefield screaming at an orc over the corpse of her brother-- it was love at first sight
#caranthir#haleth#halenthir#silmarillion#amber rambles#I honestly just love them they would be such a power couple like i can see them at banquets looking untouchable#but theyre just bitching about the other guests over wine#In my mind they are the country/goth couple of the year#Cara is used to things like this cause he grew up with Feanor and Nerdanel and they don't believe in servants#and also spent a lot of time camping while he was growing up so Cara is used to roughing it he just Doesnt Like To#but here is his tiny mortal wife like Oh My Poor Spoiled Richling Of A Husband lets get u doing some Real Work#he doesn't correct her cause he thinks its funny when she does it in front of other Noldor#cause everyone knows the Feanorians are by all accounts the least spoiled and down to earth out of all the Finweans#Cause everyone knew what Crown Prince Feanor was like
Warning, this is a pretty dark one towards the end. A lil spooky if you will
Chapter 5- Somethingâs in Faron Woods
Zelda was exhausted. With the new problem of disappearances, her workload doubled. She was getting several letters from people claiming that they knew who was causing these disappearances, or people who claimed that they got caught and escaped. She was then dealing with the economy of Hyrule, then their relationship with Labrynna, then schoolwork for her daughter, and then trying to provide for the army. Sheâd barely gotten any sleep, but she supposed it would be fine. Sheâs had sleepless nights before, this would be no different.
She was eternally grateful for the resistanceâs help, since she couldnât do much on her own with the disappearances. She sent Ashei and Shad to help Hoz on his investigation, she requested Auru to ask around since he couldnât do much in his old age, and she sent Rusl and Link to investigate Kakariko, knowing that Linkâs wolf abilities would be useful. And she requested this all under her alter ego: Sheik.
She remembers when she first disguised herself as Sheik and went to help the resistance. They were dealing with straggling Bulblins who rebelled against their king. Sheik showed up to assist, and the resistance were rightfully distrusting towards her. It was difficult since Sheik wasnât exactly a bubbly and kind person, but after a few years with her giving them correct information on situations, they started to trust her more, and she was grateful for that. It was nice doing more for Hyrule that she wouldnât be able to do as queen, but it had made her twice as busy, and she almost had no time to do anything. Even spending time with her own daughter was severely limited, and even though she wished she could do more with her, she just didnât have time. And she wasnât willing to give some of her workload to Edmund.
Theyâd known each other since they were kids. her father was attempting to have an alliance with Labrynna and they saw each other often. They had a good enough relationship then, Edmund was very polite and kind, and even when they reunited he still was, but she couldnât bring herself to trust him. He was never outwardly terrible, but she knew that if she gave him even an ounce of power, he would take it all and control Hyrule. Sheâd seen it with her father, sheâd seen it with Zant, and sheâd seen it with Ganondorf. All kings taking power from queens, why would Edmund be any different?
Despite her refusal to let him help her, she was exhausted, and sometimes she wished she could get help, but until she found more people she could trust, she would have to make do. Of course, it wasnât easy to hide how she was feeling from everyone, and when she nearly fell asleep during a boring meeting, they all grew concerned for her well-being.
âMy queen?â The representative for the Zora spoke up when she nearly fell over on the table, and she rubbed her face, sitting up straight.
âIâm alright,â she said quickly, and she glanced over at Edmund who stared at her with his brows pinched together.
âAre you sure?â
âIâm fine, just a little tired is all, we all get like that,â she waved their concerns away and looked down at the papers in front of her. She honestly didnât remember what was being discussed, but she quickly skimmed over the details and caught up as much as she could. As soon as the meeting was over, she got up and left, with Edmund trailing behind her.
âZelda?â He called out for her, and she groaned, turning around to look at him.
âYes?â
Edmund let out a huff and put his hands on his hips. âWhat have you been doing?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âYou know what I mean. You look awful. Youâre rarely eating, I hardly ever see you, and youâre never in bed when youâre supposed to be.â
âMaybe I donât want to sleep with you,â she said coldly, but instantly regretted it. That was an inappropriate thing to say, and a hurt expression flickered across Edmundâs face. He looked away and ran a hand through his hair, frustration apparent in his face.
âGoddesses, Zelda. Iâ I didnât want this arranged marriage either, but Iâm trying to make it work for our kingdomâs sakes! Itâs been ten years, why canât you do the same?â
Zelda faced him fully and looked down, biting her lip. âI⌠I apologize for that comment, Edmund. It was rude of me.â
Edmundâs glare softened slightly. âSo, whatâs going on? Is it the disappearances?â
Zelda pursed her lips. âItâs fine Edmundââ
âNo, itâs not fine. Youâre clearly overworking yourself.â
Zelda turned away and let out a frustrated sigh, spotting the nobles and representatives getting closer to them. She grabbed Edmundâs arm and led him away to somewhere more private.
âItâs fine Edmund,â she reassured when they were tucked away in a corner, âthese disappearances have been a lot of work to deal with, but it will pass. Besides, I have help from friends and Hoz to get to the bottom of this.â
Edmund stared at her for a moment, his brow pinched together. âOk, so you have help,â he finally said after a moment of contemplation, âwhy donât you let me handle the next meeting so you can⌠I donât know⌠get some rest.â
Zeldaâs heart spiked and she shook her head. âNo, I do not need help.â
âOh, so youâll get help from Hoz and friends that Iâve never heard of before, but not from me, your husband?â Edmundâs voice raised a little, and Zelda sucked in a breath.
âItâs not your responsibilityââ
âYes it is! Weâre supposed to have a partnership! Weâre supposed to work together to keep our kingdom allies! That is why we got married! Why canât you trust me?â
âMaybe itâs because you have no respect for my kingdom! Maybe itâs because you berate and criticize my people and my army! Why would I let someone who hates my kingdom try to rule it?â Zelda snapped. Edmund stared at her, surprised at her angry tone. She always spoke in a controlled tone, never letting her anger get the best of her since it was improper. Zelda took a deep breath and quickly composed herself, not wanting to escalate the conversation anymore. âEdmund, can we discuss this later? I have a meeting to attend to.â
âThatâs what you say everytime I try to talk to you about it,â Edmund scoffed.
âWell I donât have time.â
Edmund was about to say something, but he glanced up behind Zelda and his glare softened.
âAmber!â He greeted, and Zelda turned around to see her daughter walking towards them.
âHello, mother and father,â she said when she walked up to them, her hands clasped in front of her. âI finished my studies and I wanted to catch you when the meeting ended!â
Edmund gave Zelda a look and he relaxed his posture. âWell, you caught us in time, my dear.â
Amber grinned at Edmund and gave a small curtsy to Zelda. Zelda nodded her head and forced a smile. The two stared at each other awkwardly, and Zelda looked down.
âIâm glad to see you, Amber,â she finally said, and forced another smile. âI take it your studies are going well?â
âYes, mother.â
âRightâŚâ
Zelda looked away and Edmund sighed.
âWhy donât you tell your mother what youâve been studying, Amber?â He encouraged, and Amberâs eyes lit up. Zelda cringed internally, wanting so badly to stay and listen to her daughter, but she simply had no timeâŚ
âWell, Iâve been studying the founding of Hyrule, and I find it quite fascinating! I read that Hylians descended from the sky and made land here, creating alliances with the many species already living here. I just canât imagine living in the sky! I heard that they flew on birds! Big birds that they would ride on andââ
âAmber,â Zelda cut in, forcing another smile, âI think itâs wonderful that youâre interested in history. I have a meeting I must attend, but you continue on with your studies.â
Amberâs expression fell which made Zeldaâs heart twist in pain, and she looked down. âOf course, mother, sorry to keep you.â
Zelda couldnât force another smile, and she simply walked away, trying to ignore the guilt creeping up on her. Goddesses she wanted to stay, she wanted to stay and to talk with her daughter. She wanted to ignore the meetings and to actually rest her eyes. But she couldnât, there was too much to do, and she didnât have the time.
Zelda couldnât help but glance at the two when she turned the corner. Amber was still facing away, but Edmund was staring at her, and where she expected anger, there was nothing but sadness in his eyes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Link watched the field around him carefully, sticking closer to Rusl this time around. Kori was no longer riding with him, and was inside the cart playing with his new toy, meanwhile Colin sat behind him on Epona. Talo was riding his own horse on the other side of the cart, grateful to no longer be alone on the trip back home. Link was also glad that they were with Talo as well, learning more about the strange disappearances have gotten him nervous. Rusl tried to make sense of it all, explaining how the scent probably got messed up, but Link supposed he couldnât truly understand how bizarre the whole thing was. The scent wasnât replaced, nor was it lost, it just vanished. The fact that he didnât know why this was happening, or where to continue looking, chilled him to the bone, and he was anxious to get back to Ordon and out of the open field. Colin picked up on his nervous energy, and he rested his hand on his shoulder.
âAre you alright, Link?â His younger brother asked, and Link shrugged.
âI dunno, I just donât like the open field,â he answered simply.
âI heard you and pa were investigating some disappearances, anything going on with that?â
Link sighed. âI donât know, I tried to follow the missing peopleâs scent and I found nothing.â
âNothing?â
âAbsolutely nothing. The scent just ends. Pa thinks that the scent was replaced or lost but⌠I honestly donât think thatâs the case,â he ran his fingers through his hair, letting out a breath.
âWhat do you think the case is?â
âIâm not sure, the only explanation is that the people got taken to⌠a different world or something,â Link felt the heat creep up to his cheeks as he said it outloud. The idea of different worlds wasnât far-fetched to him, the temple of time literally took him through time to when the temple stood tall and proud, and the twilight realm was a world he could never forget. But to get to these places were nearly impossible, especially the twilight realm, so the idea that these people somehow getting taken to anywhere like that was ridiculous to him. Colin only hummed.
âYou sure theyâre not dead?â
âIâm sure Colin, I wouldâve smelled it. Once we get home Iâm gonna try to look further into it.â By the goddesses he was not going to let something like this continue. He was the hero for Dinâs sake, he still had a responsibility to Hyrule. Link glanced over at the carriage to see Kori and Rela poking their heads out from the carriage, smiling at the nature in front of them. A protective feeling surrounded him as he watched them. He was going to make sure that his family, especially Kori, were never going to experience a dangerous Hyrule ever again.
They reached Ordon when the sun began to set, and everyone let out a sigh of relief as they got off their steeds or out of the cart.
âBy the goddesses, itâs nice not being attacked every five seconds in the field,â Talo commented, stretching his arms after he got off his horse. Beth and Colin cheered in response as Link led Epona to his home, patting her neck and giving her a treat. Kori ran up to him and patted Eponaâs snout.
âThanks for getting us here, girl!â He said, and Epona lowered her head to nuzzle his chest, which Kori giggled at. Link smiled at the two and left them alone together as he went to help Rusl with unloading the cart. The kids stayed back talking and playing with the horses while Link and Rusl went to their home. When they opened the door, Uli set down her sewing project from the couch and met them at the door in seconds.
âYouâre home!â She cheered, and gave Rusl and Link a hug. Rusl chuckled and pecked her on the lips.
âHello, darlinâ,â he said when he pulled away, and the two smiled at each other for a moment.
âHow was it? Howâs Renado?â She asked as they pulled away to put their stuff down.
âIt was fine,â Link answered, plopping down on the couch. âRenado seems pretty overwhelmed, but otherwise it was ok.â
âWhat did Kori get?â
âA stuffed cat he named Jasper,â Link answered, stretching his arms above his head. Uli tilted her head and crossed her arms.
âA stuffed cat? If I had known that he wanted a stuffed cat, I wouldâve made him one!â
âYeah, kids are weird like that,â Link said with a chuckle, rubbing his eyes. âThe moment they see somethinâ they want at the store, they ask for it even though you can make it at home.â
âItâs more special from a shop!â Rusl chimed in, leaning near the fireplace. Uli raised an eyebrow and smirked.
âAre you saying that if I made it, it wouldnât be special?â
Ruslâs eyes went big and he turned away. âOf course not⌠thatâs⌠you know what I meant!â
Uli gave a quick laugh. âI know what you meant darlinâ, Iâm just messing with you.â Rusl glared at her and she simply giggled teasingly at him. She turned to Link and her teasing manner dropped slightly. âWell, I heard you two were investigating someâŚ. Disappearances,â she started, âwere you able to find anything?â
Link looked at Rusl and shrugged. âNot really.â
âWe didnât find anything useful at least,â Rusl added quietly. Uli frowned.
âAre you going to continue investigating?â
âWell, I kinda have to. Kori wants everyone to return home safely for his birthday,â Link said with a small smile on his lips. Uli grinned and ruffled his hair.
âHeâs a sweet boy. He reminds me of a certain someone.â
Link looked down bashfully and rolled his eyes as Uli began to dote on him. Kori was a sweet boy. So gentle and kind, despite being a little mischievous at times. He couldnât take all the credit for it of course, or really any of it. Midna raised him by herself for his first two years of life, and even though she's not with them all the time, sheâs impacted his life in more ways than one. Goddesses he missed her. He wanted to tell her everything about Kakariko, he wanted her advice, her comments, her support. He just wanted her hereâŚ
Uli clasped her hands together and sighed after a moment of silence. âWell, where are the kids?â
âDealinâ with the horses. I think theyâre a little stir crazy.â
Uli smiled and gestured at the fireplace. âI have some soup cooking if you wanna drag our little ones over here?â
The smell of the soup cooking above the fireplace hit his nostrils, and he wiped some drool that suddenly appeared on his chin. Uli let out a hearty laugh and ruffled his hair.
âIâll go get them ma,â Link chuckled, slightly embarrassed, and jogged out the door to find Colin, Rela, and Kori.
The three were excited for the hot dinner when Link told them, and they quickly put their things away as the sun set behind the horizon. Kori wasted no time showing Jasper the cat to Uli, explaining the complex backstory he gave to the plush, and how it connected to Billy the goatâs backstory. Uli listened intently, and Link let out a laugh. He always talked her ear off, but she always listened. Link wondered if he was the same way when he was younger.
âSo, I take it Midna didnât go with you?â Uli asked when Kori finished his story. Link shook his head.
âNo, she had other stuff she needed to do back home.â
âWhat does she do anyways?â Colin asked, his spoon full of soup inches away from his mouth. Link shrugged.
âStuff.â
âYou always say that,â he said, sipping the soup from the spoon. Link shrugged again.
âYâall werenât supposed to know about her existence anyways. If she wants to tell you what she does, then she will. Itâs not my business to tell you.â
âFair ânough.â
âWell,â Uli started, standing up, âI already ate, but I can dish up some food for the rest of you.â
âNah, I got two strong arms, I can do it myself,â Rusl said with a smile, grabbing a bowl and hunching over the pot.
âNonsense! Youâve been traveling all day,â Uli began to argue, and the couple began to fight over the soup. Colin and Link exchanged a look and smirked as Kori and Rela jogged over to the fireplace, trying to break up the battle for service between the two lovers. When Uli finally admitted defeat, Link got up to the pot to serve himself and Kori, smiling at his ma who returned to her sewing project. But as he began to walk across the room, he stopped, his ears twitching. There was a sound, it was distant, and out in the woods, but as it got closer, the sound became more apparent.
Screaming.
Soon it got loud enough for Uli to hear it too, and they both looked at each other in fear. Kori stared at the two, hearing it as well.
âWhat is that?â He asked, and the whole family grew quiet, hearing the sudden screaming. Rusl got up, grabbing his sword and gestured for Link to follow him.
âStay here,â Rusl said to Colin and Uli, who were about to follow him. Uli walked towards the kids while Colin reluctantly stayed by the doorway, and the two swordsmen marched out of the house. As they got closer, Link was able to spot three figures huddled together. He recognized mayor Boâs large frame next to Jaggle, who was consoling a hysterical Coro. Bo looked up as the two men got closer, and he let out a sigh of relief.
âThank the spirits,â he said, stepping away. âI was just about to come and get you two.â
âWhatâs happeninâ here?â Rusl asked, staring at Coro who looked to be a mess. âWhy were you screaming?â
Coro raised his head and stared at the two. âS-somethingâs out in the woods!â His voice shook as he said it, and he was shaking in fear.
Link frowned, feeling dread and fear creep up on him. âWhat was it?â
âIâ I donât know! I donât know!â
Rusl rested a hand on Coroâs shoulder and kneeled down. âTake some deep breaths for me, ok? Think about what you saw and try to explain it to us.â
Coro swallowed and took a deep breath. âOk, you are all gonna think that Iâm insane, but I promise Iâm not! I know these woods, Iâve seen all sorts of plants and animals! But I was putting my things away f-for the night, and I heard somethinâ behind me and⌠I saw a black creature staring at me!â Coro wailed and buried his face in his hands, and Rusl gave Link a look. âIt tried to kill me! I swear!â
âDid you have a light to see this⌠black creature?â Jaggle asked skeptically, and Coro gave him a glare.
âI didnât hallucinate it if thatâs what youâre implying! Trill saw it too!â
As if on cue, Coroâs bird, Trill poked out from his hair, staring at the men. Link expected him to begin chatting, but he was uncharacteristically silent as the men observed the bird.
âCan you⌠Uh⌠describe the creature again?â Jaggle asked, and Coro let out a frustrated huff.
âI know it sounds ridiculous, but it was a big, black creature with long arms! It almost swiped at me but I didnât wait around! I thought something was off about the forest, Trill came to me a few days before talking about a bear, so I-I thought that he just got spooked! There hasnât been a bear in these parts in ages so I assumed he saw a wolf! Thereâs been wolves around here right? But this wasnât a bear, I donât know what it was but it was no bear!â
Rusl, Jaggle, and Link all glanced at each other as Coro continued to ramble, and Rusl scratched the back of his head. âSounds like you had a scare, Coro. But letâs think about this, it couldâve been a tree or something. They look scary at night, right?â
âTrees donât try to swipe at you!â Coro yelled.
Jaggle glanced at Rusl and sighed. âYou can stay with us if it makes you feel safe, weâll be sure that the gate is locked extra tight, butââ
âNo! You need to find that thing, now!â Coro grabbed Rusl and shook him slightly. âA gate wonât stop it if it found us! Itâs too big! Donât you remember what happened ten years ago? When a green monster burst through the gates and stole all the kids?â
Ruslâs expression grew dark, and Jaggle pulled Coro away.
âNow you need to calm down!â He yelled. âItâs gettinâ late, and itâs too dangerous to go out at night, weâll hunt down whatever it was you saw tomorrowââ
âJaggle,â Mayor Bo interrupted him, staring at the entrance, âperhaps we should find whatever Coro saw.â
âWhat? Bo are you crazy?â
âI donât want anything attacking us at night when weâre most vulnerable,â Bo explained, his hands raised defensively. âWe at least need to be prepared for something!â
Jaggle opened his mouth to say something but Rusl stepped up. âHeâs right, itâs not dark yet, me and Link will check it out, the rest of you will make sure nothing happens to Ordon.â Link looked at his father in shock, but he avoided his gaze. âWeâll find whatever scared you, I donât want anything to attack us at night either.â
Coro looked relieved and nodded. âThanks, sorry to bother you folksââ
âItâs fine,â Rusl waved his apology away, âme and Link will investigate, Colin, Talon, and Beth will look after the village in the meantime, if it ainât a bother.â
Jaggle let out a loud sigh and shrugged. âDonât think Talo would be bothered at all.â
âGood. Thereâs still some sun left, once it gets too dark, me and Link will return, ok?â
Jaggle seemed more comfortable with that and nodded. Rusl nodded back and turned to head back to the house, with Link reluctantly following.
âAre you sure this is a good idea, pa?â Link asked softly as Bo led Coro to his home. âWe donât have a lot of time before it gets too dark.â
âWeâll be fine, Link. I take it itâs nothinâ serious,â Rusl said, but he didnât seem too confident in his own words. âBesides, if something is out there, I donât wantâ I donât want another attack on Ordon.â Ruslâs voice grew quiet, but he didnât turn to look at Link.
Link pursed his lips, but said nothing. When the two reached the house, Rusl quickly explained the situation to Uli and Colin. Uli protested against it while Colin grabbed a sword, determined to protect the village. With enough reassurance that they were going to be ok, the two bid their farewells, collected their swords and torches, and headed into the woods.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The forest was quiet save for the rustling of the leaves as they blew through the wind. The moon was full, which thankfully gave him and Rusl more light to work with. The sky was a deep purple, making the forest much darker than what Link would like. Sure there was some sunlight, but it wasnât enough to investigate. It was uncomfortably silent between Link and Rusl, both listening intently to whatever could be out here. Linkâs eyes were darting back and forth, his heart beating against his chest as they got closer to Coroâs house. Heâs never liked the dark, but after the twilight invasion, heâs grown to hate it. Anything could be hiding in the shadows, watching him and his father as they walked by. It made his hair stand on its ends. Rusl seemed to be more relaxed than him though, a determined look on his face as he observed the trees illuminated by his torch and moon. When they reached Coroâs house, Link lowered his breathing to hear whatever it was Coro saw. His sword was raised in front of him while Rusl looked around the house. The silence was deafening, and the night air sent a chill up Linkâs spine. He studied the ground around the house for a moment before looking at Rusl, who put a hand on his hip and sighed.
âDo you see anything?â He asked, and Link shook his head.
âI havenât seen anything unusual, but something isnât right.â
âWhat makes you say that?â
âIâI donât know, something in the air isnât right.â Link pursed his lips as he watched the trees around them. There was a good chance that he was just spooked, but the feeling of dread wouldnât leave him. Rusl clicked his tongue as his head turned behind him.
âWhat do you think Coro saw?â
Link shrugged. If it was anyone else he wouldnât be so worried, but it was Coro that got scared. He wasnât scared of anything. Even when he saw Link as a wolf he seemed calm, even when monsters were right outside his home he didnât care much. The only time Link has seen Coro frightened was during the twilight invasion, when shadow insects were crawling all over his home. A sinking feeling rested within his stomach as he thought about the missing people, but he shook his head. There was no way that there was another twilight invasion. The only Twili that were left in the world was Midna, and how she was able to be in this world was a mystery to him. No, it had to be an animal or a tree or something. Coro wasnât afraid of anything, but everyone gets spooked every now and then.
âHe probably saw a bear,â Rusl said softly, his brows pinched together.
âIf it was a bear, then we should head back and hunt it tomorrow. Itâs too dangerous to be out here at night.â Bears were rare in Ordon, but they showed up occasionally, and Link had heard too many horror stories from Rusl about them that he knew that they were a serious threat. But regardless, the idea of Coro seeing a bear scared Link less than any alternative. Rusl pursed his lips and stared at the ground.
âIâm not seeing any footprints though,â he muttered, kneeling on the ground and tracing his hand across the ground.
Link looked over his shoulder, the sudden feeling of dread overwhelming him as he stared at the darkness. Something was out in Faron woods, something dark and evil.
âPa, we should go,â he said, trying to keep his voice from quivering. âWe can lock the gates and look for it tomorrow, but weâre at a disadvantage here.â
âI know, Link. But itâs not too dark yet.â
âItâs dark enough for this to be dangerous!â
Rusl stared at the ground blankly for a moment, before looking up at Link. âYou think he saw something out in these woods?â Rusl asked, and Link tilted his head.
âYou donât believe him?â
âI-Iâm not sure. Iâm not seeinâ any footprints or anything around here. Nothing was by his house, I think he saw the shadow of a tree or something, but⌠I donât want to take any chances.â
Link frowned as Rusl went back to staring at the ground. He didnât want to risk a potentially dangerous monster attacking Ordon either, but Link knew that they wouldnât last against a black creature at night. He looked behind him at the entrance to Ordon, shifting his feet nervously as he felt eyes on him from all sides. Rusl picked up on his nervous energy, and he stood up, eyeing the house.
âIâm just gonna look around some more, then weâll head back, ok?â
Link nodded and watched as his father marched to Coroâs home. He lingered near the trees, watching them intently as if something would grab him. It was silent for too long, and he occasionally glanced over his shoulder to check on his pa, who was barely visible from the torch he was carrying. It was getting too dark, his patience was wearing thin, and his anxiety gnawed at his insides. He couldnât wait out here any longer, they needed to head back now.
A snap of a twig caused Link to jump ten feet in the air, and he had his sword drawn out defensively in front of him as he glared at the darkness in front of him. His heart beat furiously against his chest as he strained his eyes to see what was lurking in the dark.
Was it a monster? A bulblin? A lost traveler? Several possibilities ran through his head as he searched the woods in front of him, fear nearly paralyzing him so much he couldnât even speak. Another sound was heard, along with rustling, and something dark emerged into the light Linkâs lantern emitted. Link jumped, yelling out as soon as he saw it, and when it was fully in the light, Link saw that the creature that spooked him so badly was a fuzzy rabbit, staring at him as its nose twitched. Link stared in shock, his breathing quick and his heart beating a mile a minute.
âLink?â Rusl called out worriedly, and Link heard his pa jogging towards him.
âIâitâsâ a rââ Link let out a sigh of relief as the rabbit hopped away, and he started giggling. Loud.
âUh, Link?â Rusl sounded much more concerned as Link doubled over laughing.
âIâitâs a rabbitâ a rabbit,â Link wheezed out between giggles, and Rusl raised an eyebrow.
âOkâŚ?â Rusl gave him one more look before returning to the house, his head shaking in confusion. Link let out a breath and stared at the ground lit up by his lantern, feeling slightly more relaxed. He picked up his lantern and stood up, but as he got on his feet, the light moved further into the darkness, and that was when he saw it.
A black hand, clearly human shaped, standing out in the lit up grass. It quickly disappeared into the darkness, but Link was able to see it. He felt his blood run cold as he shot up, his sword shaking in his trembling hands, the relief gone in an instant. Did he imagine that?
The feeling of dread began to overwhelm him, and he spun around to his father.
âPaââ he was interrupted by a familiar shriek. A shriek that paralyzed him to the bone. His body trembled as his heart beat so hard against his chest it felt as though it would burst. His senses were clouded, he couldnât see, he couldnât hear, he couldnât feel. All he knew was fear. Until the strong paralysis went away.
Link gasped as he was able to move again. His head felt light, his heart continued to race, but he felt conscious again. He looked around, shocked that he himself was left untouched. His lantern was left on the ground, standing upright, still emitting light enough for Link to see. The sky was black now, the moon emitting barely enough light for Link to see beyond the lantern. He shakily picked it up and looked around him, his heart sinking into his stomach as realization hit him.
Rusl.
The other light that came from Ruslâs torch was put out, and Linkâs father was nowhere to be seen.
âP-pa?â Link called out weakly, tears pricking at his eyes when he was met with silence. He ran to Coroâs house and searched the ground, but there was no sign of Rusl, all except his torch which was laying on the ground. Link wasted no time turning into a wolf and sniffing the torch, but he was only met with the eye watering scent of smoke and fire. Goddesses, how could he find him?
Link noticed some scuff marks on the ground, and he saw the footprints. They werenât human, there were no toes and they were much too small, but he knew that whatever they belonged to, it was what took Rusl. Link took off running, using his wolf senses to see in the dark. The footprints went into the dark caves, and Link plowed through, luckily remembering where to go from traveling through them hundreds of times. He ignored the rats and keese that tried to hurt him, and he emerged from the other side. At the end of the cave, Link spotted something glimmering in the moonlight. Ruslâs sword. Thank the spirits.
With no smoke to cloud his senses, Link was able to pick up on Ruslâs sent. It led deeper into Faron woods, through the thick trees that used to hold poisonous gas. Link sprinted through, the feeling of deja vu of hunting down the missing tailor and Goron making him more and more anxious.
Please donât be too late.
Link was so focused on running that he barely noticed that he actually passed the scent, and he skidded to a stop, spinning to where the scent stopped. The scent didnât seem to end abruptly the same way the tailor and goronâs did thankfully, but the feeling of dread kept any feeling of relief shining through. The creature was here, and it was watching him.
Link growled at the darkness in front of him, and he heard something shuffling. A dark mass silhouetted by the moon revealed itself, growing more and more until it stood up straight, and Link felt his heart drop.
It was a shadow beast, but it was different. Its skin was black as the night, blending into the dark trees around it, all except the red Twili mark on its chest. Black tendrils jutted out of its body, mostly from its head. Two arms were laid awkwardly on its back, instead of a mask there was a mouth that snarled at him with yellow teeth, and it was huge. Bigger than any shadow beast Link had seen. How
The creature snarled and rested on its two front arms, the arms on its back hanging menacingly. Linkâs growl got more low, his fear replaced by fury. This thing did something to Rusl, and he was going to make it pay.
A hand suddenly swiped at his side, and Link was barely able to move before it hit him. He barked and jumped at the beast, biting into its shoulder as hard as he could. The beast shrieked and threw Link off of it, slamming him into a tree. Link sucked in a breath, scrambling to his feet as his back ached from the impact. He shook his head and snarled at the beast. It snarled back. He moved back and forth, trying to figure out where to begin on fighting this thing. If it was similar to a shadow beast, then fighting it shouldnât be too difficult.
Link charged at it again, sinking his teeth into the shoulder of the beast. It let out a cry, but Link continued biting, ripping it apart with his claws and fangs. Eventually he was thrown off again, but before the beast had time to recover, Link jumped at it again, this time aiming for the stomach. Link went much deeper into the soft flesh of the torso, and he was able to rip a good chunk of it out. The creature shrieked in pain as it slammed its fist down onto Link, but he dodged just in time. The beast hunched over, holding its stomach in pain as black goo fell out. Though this creature was much bigger and stronger than a shadow beast, it was simply too easy to fight.
Link went to charge again but the beast made a strange noise that stopped him in his tracks. It stayed on all fours, hunched over, gagging. Link could only watch as it gagged, his confusion holding him in place. He only came back to reality when the beast began to vomit, and soon he saw a hand flailing around from its mouth. Rusl!
Link quickly turned back into a Hylian, reaching out for the hand. He felt relief when Ruslâs hand quickly gripped to his own, meaning that Rusl was still alive and conscious, and Link pulled with all his might. The beast remained still as Rusl was slowly pulled out, and Linkâs father let out a gasp as his face emerged from the mouth.
âPa!â Link yelled out, and Rusl struggled to pull his other arm free from the throat of the beast. His face was covered in the black goo that poured out of its stomach, covering his eyes and hair. As Link pulled him out more, he noticed the teeth of the beast ripping up his clothes, but he didnât stop pulling.
Ruslâs other arm was pulled free, and it flailed towards Linkâs arm, and he weakly hung on as he was pulled out the rest of the way. But just as he was free, the beast suddenly bit down on Ruslâs leg, and Link gasped as Ruslâs grip went limp and he was pulled away from him.
âPA!â Link screamed as he was dragged away, and the beast snarled at him, leering over Rusl as if he was its prize. It scooped up his pa in one of the hands on its back and it took off running, deeper into the woods. Link cursed under his breath and turned into a wolf again, ignoring the pain that shot through as he transformed. He took off running, following the beast through a gate to where Coroâs birdâs shop was. Link pumped his canine legs, and was able to catch up to the beast and Rusl. When he was close enough, he bit down on its leg, attempting to drag it to the ground. The creature shrieked and spun around, ripping its leg from Linkâs mouth. The beast snarled at him as Rusl hung limply in its hand, blood and black goo dripping down his feet and hair. Link barked at him, but he didnât move. The beast backed away from Link as he tried to wake his pa up, its back arching like an agitated cat as it growled at him.
Link made sure he was merciless this time around. He attacked relentlessly, aiming for the arms resting on its back, trying to get it to drop Rusl, but its grip was tight around his father, so it never let him go no matter how hard Link bit into its arms. The beast smacked Link a few times as he attacked the arms, but he fought through the pain, fiercely biting and scratching the beast. Link had severely underestimated this creature, with it not giving out anytime soon. Shadow beasts normally would die after having their throats ripped out or being clawed to death, but it seemed that this thing was invincible. He didnât know why, but it was stronger than any Twili creature heâs ever fought.
Link was smacked against a tree again, and he staggered slightly as he got on his feet. He was growing exhausted, he felt like he was doing the same thing over and over again to no avail. Though heâd just ripped part of its stomach out, it didnât seem to be bothered by it. What was this thing?
The creature snarled at him again, having a more confident pose as it faced Link, and all he could do was growl at the thing. He didnât care what happened to him, he just needed to make sure Rusl was safe. The beast charged at him, and Link braced himself, but it suddenly stopped, shrinking back into the shadows, making strange noises that sounded like pain. It looked up at the sky and to Linkâs surprise, it dropped Rusl and sprinted away, leaving Link alone with his father. He quickly turned back into a Hylian, staggering at the sharp pain in his back, but he stood up, pulling out his sword. He ran to Rusl, standing over his father protectively in case it returned, but it did not.
Why did the thing run away? It was winning, it wouldnât have dropped Rusl like that. The sun rising in the sky answered Linkâs question, and soon the forest was lit up. Relief swept over him as he was able to see, and he knew he was safe. For now at least. It seemed that theâTwili beastâ hated the light.
Link relaxed and put his sword away, exhaustion beginning to overwhelm him, but he couldnât rest, not yet. He looked at his father who was still unconscious, and he turned him over. His entire body was covered in black goo, and some of it mixed in with blood from small cuts on his skin, possibly from the creatureâs teeth. His leg looked the worst, with a bite mark circling around his calf and shin. It had stopped bleeding it seemed, but dried blood mixed with black goo made it look much worse. Rusl was breathing, though it was shallow and sounded wrong. Link hoped that his ribs werenât bruised or broken, he wondered how tight that thing held onto him. Link took a deep breath and shook him gently, brushing his clumpy hair out of his eyes.
âP-pa?â He whispered, shaking him a little harder. Rusl seemed to be reacting to being shaken, so Link tried harder. He needed medical attention, and his mind thought of the spirit springs. He remembered fairies appeared at each one after he faced a trial from the great fairy, he wondered if they were still there. âPa,â he repeated, a little louder. Ruslâs blue eyes began to flutter open, and he stared at Link confused.
âL-Link?â He croaked.
Link smiled a relieved smile and started to help him to his feet, but Rusl stopped him quickly, hissing in pain as he held his side.
âSomethings wrong,â he rasped, sinking into the ground. Link frowned and looked him over. His ribs mustâve been broken.
âCâmon, pa. We gotta get to the spring. Youâll feel better.â
Rusl stared at him, wheezing and holding his side painfully, but he didnât stop Link from helping him to his feet. Rusl leaned heavily on Linkâs side, and the two slowly walked to the spring. It felt like hours until they finally made it, at some point Link had to pick up his pa to carry him the rest of the way, despite his protests. He set him down in the spring water, immediately feeling comfort in the warm water. Rusl let out a sigh of relief as he rested in the water, but the relief melted into panic as he looked at himself.
âHey, whatâs wrong?â Link asked, calming down his father.
ââDonât want to dirty the spring.â
âYouâre not gonna dirty the spring, the spiritâs light keeps it clean,â at least he assumed, the water never seemed to get dirty no matter what was put in it. Rusl relaxed again and stared at himself, his brows furrowed. Link began washing the goo and blood off of himself, helping Rusl occasionally. Rusl was uncomfortably silent while the two cleaned themselves off, and Link wanted to bring up what had happened, but he couldnât bring himself to talk about it either. After Link finished washing out his wounds, he stood up, limping towards the bushes to see if any fairies were hiding. Luckily he found two and he returned with them both, noticing Rusl staring at him with his brows furrowed.
âSome fairies,â Link said, handing them both to him.
Rusl silently opened his palm where one fluttered onto his hand, and it healed up his bleeding leg and bruised ribs. He let out a sigh of relief and stared at Link who still held the other one.
âYou need another one, pa,â Link pressed, but Rusl shook his head.
âYouâre hurt too.â
âNot as bad as you.â
âI donât care, my leg is healed, you use it.â
Link was taken aback at his intense tone, but he was too tired to fight back. He held the fairy gently in his hand and it floated around him, healing up his aching back. It rested on his head when it finished healing him, and Link let out a sigh of relief. Fairies were wonderful creatures.
The two sat in silence, staring at the crystal blue water they were in, soaking in the sun as it rose higher and higher in the sky. It didnât feel like they were gone all night, but with Linkâs tired body, he supposed it made sense.
âLink,â Rusl broke the silence, continuing to stare blankly at the water. âWe need to tell the resistance about this as soon as possible.â Link stared at him for a moment, and he opened his mouth to say something, but Rusl continued. âThat⌠thing⌠it has to be responsible for the disappearances. We need to tell them about this.â
Link nodded. âWe oughta tell them when we all meet up thenââ
âIâm not waiting until the date Sheik set, we need to tell them now.â
Link stared at him for a moment, then nodded. âYeah, ok, I agree. Iâll send a letter, then we can move out tomorrow.â
âLinkââ
âWe move out tomorrow, pa. We need rest though, weâve been up all night. Besides, we gotta tell the folks around Ordon to stay away from Faron at night, ok?â
Rusl glared at him for a moment, but it softened when he had no rebuttal. âYeah, ok. We need rest.â
Link nodded. He was no stranger to staying up all night, but as heâs gotten older, itâs been much harder to deal with. He stood up, his legs feeling weak as he walked around, and Rusl followed, being careful on his newly healed leg. Link stared at his leg for a moment, then faced him.
âAre⌠are you alright?â
Rusl stopped walking and looked up at him. âIâm⌠fine. Thanks to you. Are you ok?â
Link pursed his lips and nodded. âIâll be fine, pa.â
Ruslâs gaze softened and he wrapped his arm around Linkâs shoulder. âLetâs head back then. I bet everyone is worried sick.â
Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars's new song reminds me of this scene
- It's okay.
- It's not okay. Why is it okay with you? Why aren't you angry?
- That's not the last feeling I want to experience.
If the party was over
And our time on Earth was through
I'd wanna hold you just for a while
And die with a smile
