Dustin’s Surprise Party

Prompts: “How could you forget your son’s birthday?” (99), “Just smile, I really need to see you smile right now” (72), and “I’m late” (56)

A/N: I did it for Steve (bc OF COURSE I did). Also, we have a Henderson! reader (bc OF COURSE we do. As I have previously stated, I am trash for Steve x Henderson! Reader.) Thanks for the request!!

Warnings: Swearing

Steve’s in the middle of leisurely closing up shop on a weeknight. Bohemian Rhapsody’s playing on the radio, and Steve hums along as he sweeps the floor. When the phone rings, he takes his sweet time sauntering across the store to pick it up.

“Hawkins Family Video. How may I help you?”

“Where are you, dingus?”

If it hadn’t been for the nickname, Steve might not have recognized the voice on the other end of the line. However, his best friend refers to him almost exclusively with that name. Steve sighs before inquiring what she’s talking about.

“Don’t you remember what today is?”

Steve wracks his brain but still comes up short. “Um...Tuesday?”

“Oh my god. Your girlfriend’s here freaking out, trying to get everything ready before the boys get home from AV club, and you can’t even remember what day it is.”

That’s when the lightbulb finally clicks in Steve’s head.

“Shit. Dustin’s surprise party is tonight, isn’t it?”

“Ding, ding, ding! We have a...I would say ‘winner,’ but you’re really more of a ‘wiener.’ How could you forget your son’s birthday?”

“Okay, first of all, don’t call him my son. I’m dating his sister, so that’s weird as hell,” Steve says. “Second of all-“

Robin, being Robin, interrupts. “Mrs. Henderson just left to pick the kids up from school, so they’ll be arriving any minute. Just get here, okay? Preferably before Y/N loses it.”

There’s a screech as Robin slams the phone onto the receiver-a clear sign that Steve needs to get moving ASAP, unless he wants Robin to give him crap about it for the rest of his life.

Steve drives almost twice the speed limit the entire way there. However, it’s not fast enough to outpace Mrs. Henderson. Her station wagon is already parked in the driveway by the time Steve pulls up. He hops out of his car and sprints to the front door, trying to avoid missing another minute of the party he’s supposed to be co-hosting.

When he steps onto the front porch, the door automatically swings open. Robin stands there, eyebrows raised so high that they blend into her hairline.

“So you finally decided to show up, huh?” she chuckles. “Come on. Everyone’s in here.”

Steve follows Robin into the kitchen. The entire party is gathered around the table, along with Mrs. Henderson, Nancy, and Jonathan. (I don’t know why I felt the need to include Jancy, but I wanted Robin to be there, and I only felt it was fair for them to be invited, too.) There’s a homemade sheet cake in the center of the table, decorated with fifteen unlit candles and the words “Happy Birthday Dustin” written in your looping cursive. The guest of honor sits at the head of the table, practically salivating at the sight of his cake. But when his eyes fall on Steve, they light up even more.

“Hey, dude! You made it.” Dustin walks up to Steve and performs their handshake, which ends in a bro hug.

“Yeah, I did. Happy birthday, man. Sorry I’m late.”

Dustin laughs. “Normally, that wouldn’t bother me, but Y/N was making us wait to cut the cake until you got here.”

“Really?” Steve’s cheeks heat up. You’re so considerate, always thinking of others. Meanwhile, he can’t even make it to a party he helped plan on time.

“Yeah. I think she wanted you to see how much of a domestic goddess she is or some shit.”

“Dusty!”

“Sorry, Mom,” Dustin says.

Steve scratches the back of his neck. “Hey, um-where is Y/N?”

“Right here.” You appear around the corner, waving the box of matches you’ve spent the last ten minutes searching for. Then, you glare at your little brother. “By the way, I heard what you said about me, Dustin. You’re lucky it’s your birthday. Otherwise, I’d kick your ass.”

“Y/N!”

“Sorry, Mom,” you echo your brother’s words from earlier before nodding to your boyfriend. “Glad to see you finally decided to turn up.”

Steve stands there awkwardly, unsure of how to respond. He watches as you scrape a match against the side of the box, then migrates toward you to help light the candles. When his hand twitches in the direction of the matches, you subtly scoot them out of his reach.

The flush rises back up to his face when he catches El whisper something in Max’s ear, and the two of them giggle. Nonetheless, he still tries to help you serve up the cake. He continuously gets in your way, so you finally allow him to take charge of scooping the ice cream.

It isn’t until fifteen minutes later that you actually get a chance to sample the cake you baked from scratch. Steve’s barely eaten all day, so he’s famished, but he makes sure you get the bigger slice of cake and a generous helping of ice cream. There’s not enough room at the table, so the two of you head into the living room.

The spot you choose reveals how angry you are with him. You’re not pissed enough to sit on a different piece of furniture, even though there are other chairs available. However, judging by the fact that you create as much distance as possible by nestling into the corner of the loveseat, Steve knows you’re still not pleased with him.

“You did a really nice job with the cake. It looks beautiful.” When he’s met with silence, Steve digs his fork into the dessert, shovels it into his mouth, and lets out an exaggerated moan. “Oh, my god. It tastes even better than it looks.”

You still don’t respond-just swirl your spoon through your bowl of ice cream. However, the corners of your lips quirk slightly upward. He nudges your foot with his.

“Look, babe, I’m really sorry about tonight. I just-lost track of time.” You give him a pointed look. “Okay, okay. I also lost track of the day. But I’ll make it up to you, baby. I promise. Let me make it up to you.”

Steve places a kiss on your neck-a bold move, considering all your family and friends are in the next room. It sends a shiver down your spine, but you still shove him away. He’s not getting off the hook that easily.

Besides, it’s your brother’s birthday party. Someone’s probably going to catch you if you just start making out on the couch. The options for that “someone” include your mom, little brother, one of your brother’s friends, Steve’s ex-girlfriend, Steve’s ex-girlfriend’s current boyfriend, and/or Steve’s best friend. (On paper, the last seems like the best option, but Robin would probably actually be the worst, considering she’d never let you live it down.)

So, yeah. Not happening.

“Come on, Y/N. I know I screwed up. But surely, there’s something-“

“Just smile. I really need to see you smile right now.”

The words tumble off your lips as you think of them. You’re not really sure why you make this request, but you do. And Steve doesn’t question it; he just breaks out into the cheesiest grin you’ve ever seen. It melts your heart like the long-forgotten ice cream turning into a puddle on your paper plate. You set it on the coffee table, and Steve follows suit-still flashing his pearly whites.

“Okay, you can stop now. It’s starting to get creepy.”

“Creepy, eh? You’re the one who requested this. And now you’re insulting me for it? That’s a little hypocritical of you, don’t you think?” When you respond with a giggle, Steve adds, “Don’t you laugh at me! Or I’ll give you something to laugh about.”

His hands travel to your waist, and as soon as you realize what he’s doing, you playfully swat at them. “Steve Harrington, don’t you dare.”

“Or what?” he asks, pausing for a moment to tilt his head slightly to the side.

“Or...else.”

Of course, that vague threat is not enough to stop him from tackling you with tickles. You giggle uncontrollably as he pins you to the couch. His fingers graze your sides, leaving fluttering butterflies in their wake. You’re not sure if it’s his close proximity making you dizzy or the fact that you’re taking in an inadequate amount of oxygen. You haven’t gotten an actual breath of air in several minutes; even between fits of laughter, you don’t get a chance to breathe, since Steve’s constantly stealing kisses. You get lost in the taste of sugar on his lips and the musky smell of his cologne

You get so lost, in fact, that you don’t hear the approaching footsteps until it’s already too late.

“Am I interrupting something?”

Steve pulls himself off you so quickly that he almost tumbles off the sofa. You both recoil into your separate corners of the couch and run fingers through your hair, trying (and failing) to smooth it back down.

Robin stands in the doorway, arms crossed over her chest and a smirk on her face. Steve’s face flushes for the third time tonight. This time, however, he doesn’t just turn a little pink; his skin burns fire-truck red. He stumbles over his words.

“It wasn’t-I don’t know how it looked, but we weren’t-“

“Yeah, yeah, sure you weren’t, dingus. You’re lucky it was just me and not, like, Dustin. You would’ve scarred the kid for life,” she says. “Anyway, I was just looking for the restroom, so...”

Unlike Steve, you’re too shell-shocked to be embarrassed. You raise a single finger to point down the hall.

“Thanks. Carry on...with whatever you definitely weren’t doing,” Robin says with a wink.

At this point, Steve’s skin is so hot that it’s just a matter of time before he bursts into flames.

Meanwhile, Robin’s already planning how she’s going to incorporate this story into the future toast for her favorite couple’s wedding.

A/N: I would like to clarify that everything written in this story is complete fiction and isn’t to be taken as a true portrayal of reality. This story was extremely difficult to write, it really hurt if I’m being honest, and tbh I’m not too sure of the quality. I just know that I struggled to write it because, while I feel angst is what I do best, I tend to prefer hopeful endings- not the kind that would leave someone distraught.

Also, I’m just gonna add that the person who proofread this for me said “Wow, I understand why you wanted to get it out... just horribly sad. I don’t know what else to say except ouch.” So I hope that is of some help.*****

     Sometimes love just isn’t enough. You can love someone with all you have. Your heart and soul. With every fiber of your being. Yet and still, love alone isn’t enough to keep two drifting souls together. No matter how hard you try, you just can’t tie two people together by love alone. Effort and dedication need to be put into a relationship, so that it won’t fall apart. 

     Everything had been going so well… Until it wasn’t. Together for three years, you’d had many ups and downs but ultimately you made it through them all. This time it was different. All of those fights that previously seemed like they might tear you two apart were just child’s play. Those fights were nothing compared to the current stalemate. Neither of you had similar thoughts on the matter- and it was driving you up the wall. This wasn’t what you expected when you first started dating Jun three years ago. It wasn’t anywhere close to your mind when you moved in with him. Though looking back, maybe it should have been.

     But you were love blind, and so was he. Maybe you both thought you were of the same mind then. Maybe you thought there were no worries- that love was capable of overcoming any obstacle. Except as we all know, love on its own is incapable of defeating any problem. Love is just a mitigating factor, you can let it drive you to pull yourself together, to handle things you never thought possible. On its own, love is worthless. 

     The problem stemmed from your viewpoints on life- marriage and children. The problem was that he wanted both of those things, and that you only wanted one. Having children had never been in your life plan. Seemingly this issue arose overnight. Nothing ever just pops up unexpectedly though, it was stewing somewhere away from the forefront. Maybe you should’ve noticed all those times his face lit up when he interacted with a friend’s child. Looking back, you should’ve noticed how he would always look at you with this heartwarming smile- the look in his eyes that screamed that what if one day he got to hold your child.

     But you didn’t notice. Instead you existed completely blind to the issue, until he proposed to you. What was meant to be one of the happiest moments of your life turned into one of the worst. Jun’s proposal speech was sweet and sentimental, that the two of you were meant to be together, that you were family. And that somewhere along the line, once you made a home for yourselves, that he couldn’t wait to see what your children would look like- whose eyes they’d have, he thought they should have yours. 

     All the color had drained from your face, and in that moment you had been immensely glad that he hadn’t proposed to you in public. Everything had gone slightly blurry as tears filled your eyes. How were you supposed to tell the man you were madly in love with, the man that wanted to spend the rest of his life with you, that you didn’t want kids? But were you just supposed to sit back and do something so life altering, where you’d actually influence a child’s life, when you never wanted to? You couldn’t help but think how unfair that’d be, not just to you, but to Jun and the child.

     Jun had thought your tears were those of happiness, and since the beginning you’d been nodding until he mentioned kids, so naturally he thought you were going to say yes. Thus he had slipped the ring onto your finger and hugged you tight. That was when you completely broke down, you started sobbing uncontrollably. Of course seeing you like this was confusing for him, he thought you were happy, so why were you crying like something terrible had happened? Nothing else was spoken of that night, Jun ushered you to bed and tucked you in after turning on your favorite TV show. Despite not being aware of what was upsetting you, he took care of you. And that made it so much harder.

     Sleeping in the same bed as him was difficult. Your heart felt constricted. Ultimately the restlessness won out, and since you knew you wouldn’t be getting any sleep, you crawled out of the covers in the early hours of morning. There was too much going on in your head, all the wires were crossed and fraying. Any decision you made would hurt someone. Jun found you hours later in the kitchen, a cold mug of coffee sitting in front of you, head in your hands.

     His hand smoothed down your back, startling you. “Can you tell me what’s wrong?”

     “I… I don’t know how to say this.” You mumbled, looking over at him. “How- how am I supposed to tell you? I don’t want to hurt you.”

     Jun laughed nervously. “The way you’re talking is scaring me. You didn’t cheat on me did you?”

     You recoiled, shaking your head. “No, I’d never.”

     “Well then, whatever it is can’t be that bad.”

     Biting the inside of your cheek, you nodded. You just needed to say it. “Jun, I love you, and I want to marry you.” Pausing to take a deep breath you noticed the bright smile on his face at your previous words. His smile made you want to keep the next sentence captive in your head. “But I… I don’t want kids.”

     The smile that you loved dropped from his face. “What?”

     “Please don’t make me say it again, it was hard enough to get out in the first place.” You whispered, looking away from Jun.

     His hands grasped your shoulders, turning you to face him. “I need to hear you say it again.”

     “I don’t want kids.”

     After you had admitted that you didn’t want to have kids, the conversation had taken a serious turn. Jun didn’t understand how you’d never talked about it before. Just like you, he had assumed you both always wanted the same thing- that was how in tune you were with each other. Clearly though, you weren’t as in tune as you thought. Weeks passed, and each day the conversation was revisited. Each time it felt like your heart was being ripped from your chest. Jagged edges surrounding where your heart used to reside.

     Certainly Jun felt the same. Like a bucket of ice water had sloshed over him while he was peacefully asleep. Like a blindfold had been lifted, the world that used to hold countless treasures turned into a wasteland. How could he not? But there was a turning point. A point in which he realized you wouldn’t change your mind. A point in which you realized how much you truly loved him. If you didn’t, how could you do what was necessary?

     If you didn’t love him, how could you leave him when he said he was willing to not have children if he was with you? Because that’s just what happened. Initially it seemed like neither of you would change your minds, the argument would just go on forever. No true change occuring, but neither of you being strong enough to leave. But then one day he walked into the living room, looking defeated, and declared that if you didn’t want kids then it was okay.

     Maybe earlier when you felt like your heart had been ripped out, it was just the ghost of a pain that was to come. The second Jun uttered those words was the most painful moment since he’d proposed to you. Images of your future flashed before your eyes, the future of your relationship if you married him after his sacrifice. The first few years might be wonderful, filled with happy moments of wedded bliss. But then the reality would sink in, Jun would realize exactly what he’d given up, and that he’d given that up for you. You would then become the source of pain for him. 

     Maybe he’d regret his decision, or maybe he’d become resentful and bitter towards you. That wasn’t a future you wanted any part in. Facing the pain of leaving him now would be a hundred times better than staying in a relationship that was bound for misery. A part of you wished to avoid the end, to run away without a word, but that wasn’t you. You weren’t a coward. You weren’t a dastardly type that could disappear in the night, leaving loved ones without prior notice of your absence. You’d have to face him, one-on-one, and tell him. 

     Tell him that you couldn’t marry him. Tell him that you hated leaving him, but you couldn’t stay. It would hurt. It would be torture to find those words. To set them free from your mind and release them to the world. And they were. Each word became a stone settled in the back of your mouth, the weight steadily increasing as you spoke. Stomach unsettled at the look of despair on Jun’s face. Heartbreak and desperation shone clearly in his eyes, his hand clutching at your arm as he begged you to stay. He said he couldn’t survive without you. He said you were his heart, the other part of him. But you knew he could survive. You knew he could make it through, and that one day, eventually, he would thank you. 

     After breaking his heart in the middle of your living room, you moved out, even going so far as to quit the job where you had met. You could still remember how your relationship started- at first you couldn’t stand each other, and that went on for years. Maybe it would’ve been better if you had never found comfort with each other. That way this pain would never have occurred. That way you wouldn’t know of the love that you couldn’t keep. 

     You were of a hopeful mind that as time passed, it would get easier, for both of you. And for a time it did, but each time you reached a better place you would run into him somewhere in town. It was never good when you ran into each other. The first few times Jun would plead with you, saying he missed you so much, and that you never left his mind. After that he quickly became bitter and resentful, forgoing a greeting and going straight to slights and insults. And he knew just what to say to wound you.

     On one specific occasion, what would later be known to you as the last time you spoke to Jun, you’d had enough. Of all places, you just had to run into him at a work event, the new company you’d joined was having a charity event where a bunch of other advertising firms were invited. You’d spotted him across the room first, chatting lightly, happily, with a group of your coworkers. The smile present on his face was bright, cheerful, as if over the past two years he had known no pain. You knew the second he saw you, the smile slipping from his face with a speed that seemed inhuman. 

     It made your heart ache, the way his lips set into a thin line. How he set down the glass of champagne he was holding and slowly made his way over to you. A small part of you wanted to run away, to go somewhere else, but you knew that once Jun sets his sights on something he doesn’t back down. And running wouldn’t help at all. So in that moment you decided it was enough. The conversation started innocently enough, as you had been talking to a few people from another firm, but the second they left it mutated.

     Words became harsh. Cruel. Filled with resentment and pain. Making it clear he hadn’t moved on, as if he hadn’t even tried. Instead choosing to dwell on his anger and pain that you had caused him. It reached a point that your voices cut through the mindless chatter of the people around you. Eyes flickered over to the two of you as the room suddenly went quiet. Surely it must’ve been a sight to see two people dressed to the 9’s, having a shouting match at a high end charity event.

     A vein pulsed in his neck as he yelled. “We could’ve worked it out! We could have saved us!”

     “Some things aren’t worth saving!” Your voice finally rose to match his, rage filling you. “For the past two years since we broke up, I’ve been hoping that you could move on and let go. I did what I did, for you! So that you wouldn’t wake up one day, married to me, and realize you made a mistake. Don’t you understand?” You cried out. “There was nothing to save, Junhee!”

     You loved him. You loved him so much it made your heart hurt. But love isn’t always meant to last. Sometimes its only purpose is to end in pain, so that you end up with jagged edges that take years to sand down. Love can be wonderful, it can come from strained beginnings and create something beautiful- and after that creation has grown it can be torn down in the same manner. Just as the sun rises it can be beautiful, but when the sun sets it becomes shrouded in darkness and all that was beautiful is hidden. Making you question if it was ever love to begin with.

ok  so  mac  was  born  to  mac  jr  and  a  former  singer  named  tara  michaels  .  they  met  when  she  was  in  the  record  label  building  , for  a  meeting  in  regards  to  a  possible  contract  and  the  rest  was  history  ?  grandpa  hated  tara  and  made  no  secret  of  his  opinions  abt  her  .  basically  he  thought  she  was  a  golddigger  (  she  was  )  and  his  son  was  stupid  (  also  true  )  ,  and  even  refused  to  attend  their  wedding ceremony .  needless  to  say  ,  as  soon  as  they  got  married  ,  the  couple  left  sunny  california  n  settled  down  in  chicago  .

mac  was  his  first  male  grandchild  tho  ,  n  even  if  he  hated  his  mother  n  resented  his  dads  stupidity  ,  mac  was  kinda  like  his  golden  child  .  so  senior  kinda  stole  his  grandson  ?  not  rly  but  he  did  keep  him  in  la  every  summer  n  holidays  ,  when  he  wasnt  in  school  in  chicago  .

so  mac  rly  looked  up  to  his  grandpa  growing  up  even  if  he  also  thought  he  was  an  asshole  ?  they  werent  super  close  but  had  a  lot  of  respect  for  each  other  ,  n  mac  much  preferred  spending  his  time  with  og  mac  than  with  mac  jr  n  his  ma   (  oh  boy  this  is  bound  to  get  confusing  )  .  but  yea  ,  his  grandpa  was  a  huge  influence  on him  while  growing  up  ,  which  was  mayhaps  not  a  good  idea  .

once  he  graduated  high  school  ,  his  grandpa  told  him  that  he  wanted  him  to  run  the  company  in  his  dads  place  bc  he  wasnt  leaving  a  multibillion  dollar  company  for  that  doofus  ,  but  sneaky  old  mac  told  him  that  there  were  terms  to  this  development  .  mac  would  get  the  company  once  he  retired  ,  but  since  his  father  had  been  such  a  dumb  fuck  ,  he  would  only  get  the  company  n  his  money  ,  if  he  married  a  woman  approved  by  the  senior  before  he  kicked  the  bucket  .  mac  threw  an  absolute  fit  ,  but  eventually  came  to  the  conclusion  that  he’d  rather  marry  someone  for  convenience  than  be  poor  for  the  rest  of  his  life  .  which  tbh  so  would  i  .

ENTER  ARRANGED  FIANCÉE  .  they’ve  been  engaged  for  about  two  yrs  now  but  no  one  is  in  any  rush  for  the  actual  marriage  .  the  deal  was  that  they  only  had  to  do  it  before  senior  died  ,  n  since  he’s  in  pretty  much  perfect  help  ,  the  duo  is  just  biding  their  time  .  mac  moved  to  nyc  to  live  w/  the  fiancée  ,  but  as  of  now  ,  they  r  pretty  much  just  roommates  atm  .  so  yeah  basically  thats  how  mac  ended  up  in  this  moment  in  his  life  lmao  . 

in  regards  to  his  personality  ,  mac  is  pretty  much  a  mini  version  of  malcolm  senior  .  he’s  v  confident  (  cocky  )  n  has  a  LOT  of  trouble  trying  to  view  life  by  any  other  point  of  view  than  his  own  .  very  selfish  and  honestly  not  a  guy  u  can  put  ur  trust  in  ?  he’s  not  like  a  super  asshole  or  anything  ,  is  in  fact  rly  charming  n  can  be  a  great  person  to  hang  out  w/  but  if  you’re  his  best  friend  n  he  feels  like  he  can  get  away  w/  hooking  up  w  your  mom  ? 12/10  will  do  it  .

is  mad  into  parties  ?  always  hanging  out  in  the  hottest  spots  w  all  different  kinds  of  ppl  until  the  sun  is  comin  up  .  he  has  weird  views  when  it  comes  to  dating  which  is  lowkey  for  is  kinda  an  asshole  who  gives  no  fucks  n  usually  ends  up  being  hated  by  his  exes  .

When Raven gets a text from Murphy instructing her to meet him at the diner, her heart nearly jumps out of her chest, mostly because she already knows what this is about.

“You can’t be sure!” Monty shouts from the lab’s tiny kitchen, the only spot in the entire building that food can safely be consumed. “Maybe it’s about something else.”

“It’s not,” Raven says, positively giddy. “I know it! It’s finally time!”

Monty rolls his eyes affectionately, throwing a roll of paper towels at her as she hustles out the door.

When she makes it to the diner, she’s delighted to see both Murphy’s car and Zeke’s shitty bike parked near the front door. Good. She can kill two birds with one stone: disconcert the new mechanic in town and screw with her best friend.

When the little bell over the door rings, Raven sees Zeke’s eyes widen and his cheeks turn a little pink. Yes. Good.

“Morning, Raven,” Octavia says from the corner booth, waving. “Who are you terrorizing today?”

“Sometimes I come here for food, you know,” Raven replies.

“Today is not one of those days, I assume,” Zeke says. “You wear a distinct expression when you’re hungry, and you don’t have that face on today.”

Raven’s original plan to screw with Zeke flies out the window in the face of his strangely-perceptive observation. She blinks at him for a couple minutes, then turns to the counter.

“You two are disgusting,” she informs Murphy as he leans over to peck Emori on the lips. “People eat here.”

Murphy rolls his eyes. Emori gives Raven the middle finger.

“You’re going to the lab, right?” Raven asks her newest employee. When Emori nods, Raven gives her a thumbs-up. “Just a note, Monty’s up to his no-explosives-at-the-desks bullshit again, so whatever you do, don’t open my bottom drawer.”

“Noted.” Emori gives Murphy a little wave goodbye. Raven starts snickering as Murphy watches her walk away.

“You’re shameless, J,” she tells him, hopping up on a counter stool.

He shrugs. “She’s cute. Sue me.”

“Cute,” Raven mocks. “What is this, high school?”

“Are you going to mock me, or help me?”

“Preferably, both,” she says, wiggling her eyebrows. “Now, are you going to ask me what I think you’re going to ask me?”

“I want to propose to-” Murphy’s whisper is cut off by a loud yelp of joy from Raven. “Damn, would you let me finish?”

“I knew it!” Raven crows. “I knew it!”

“Yeah, yeah, okay, shut up,” Murphy grumbles. “Listen-”

“You’re finally proposing!” Raven squeals, then sobers. “Okay. I’m ready. Talk.”

Murphy sighs and runs a hand through his hair. “I need help finding a ring.” When Raven’s grin widens, he points at her. “Chill, Reyes. I want something small, something that fits her.”

Raven’s grin fades only slightly as the gravity of the situation settles over her. “Got it,” she nods. “But, J, she doesn’t exactly have a left ring finger.”

Murphy’s brow furrows. “I know. And I don’t want to make her feel bad about her hand. She’s gotten way better about it and I don’t want to fuck that up.”

Raven wishes that Finn would have taught her some metalworking. That might have come in handy right about now. “You could get one and put it on a chain,” she suggests. “She could wear it around her neck instead of on her hand.”

“Would you do that?” Murphy asks, and Raven has an epiphany that makes her feel way better about the whole situation.

“Yeah, actually. She’d have to take a ring off at the lab, anyway. This way, she doesn’t have to.”

The relief in Murphy’s eyes is palpable. “Okay.” He sighs. “You’re still helping me pick one, you know.”

Raven nearly hops in her seat with excitement. “Obviously. You can’t get rid of me that easy.”

“Where does Emori think you are, anyway?” Raven asks Murphy as they cruise out of town in her newly-rebuilt SUV, the crisp fall air flowing in through the open windows.

“She knows I’m going out with you,” he says, reaching for his phone and thumbing through his camera roll. “She didn’t ask; she figures it’s just best friend stuff.”

“Nah,” Raven grins. “It’s best man stuff.” She turns to look at him. “I am your best man, right?”

“Eyes on the road!” Murphy yelps. Once Raven turns away, he answers, “Yeah, obviously. Who else would it be if she says yes?”

“If?” Mercifully, she doesn’t look away from the highway again, but Murphy can see the incredulous expression written all over her face. “You’re an idiot, J.” She says it with love. “Of course she’ll say yes. You’ve been dating and living together for years.”

“I know,” Murphy says, anxiety boiling in his stomach. He has a suspicion that emotion would come to make a home there over the next couple months. “I just… What if she doesn’t want commitment?”

“Oh, she does.” Raven nods sagely. “I’m her friend, too, you know.” She raises a finger. “And don’t ask me to be a double agent. No fricking way.”

Murphy laughs. “Wasn’t going to.”

“Seriously, though.” Raven’s voice goes soft. “She really loves you, J. She wants to spend the rest of her life with you. The ring, the wedding and everything else is just an affirmation of that.”

“Hey,” Murphy says, half-joking, “want to write my vows for me? That’s some good shit.”

Raven snorts. “Hell no. You’re doing all that yourself. I have to focus on my best man toast. After all, it is my duty to roast you to kingdom come. And I’ve got a lot of material.”

Ring shopping with Raven wasn’t nearly as horrible as Murphy anticipated. Her commentary may be sarcastic, but he’s surprised to find that she’s actually pretty good at this. She knows what Emori likes well enough, he supposes, and she has an eye for the pretty and practical that he doesn’t.

“That’s nice,” she says, pointing to a thin silver band with a rope-like pattern weaving around it. “That’d look pretty around a chain.”

“It’s too shiny,” Murphy argues.

“J. Honey.” Raven shakes her head. “It has to have a little bit of shine. So it catches the light and people see it, you know? Even Emori will want to show it off.”

“Did you find what you’re looking for?”

Murphy looks up at the saleswoman. “Not yet. I’m trying to find an engagement ring for my girlfriend, but I want to put it on a chain since she can’t wear rings.”

The saleswoman thinks for a moment, then reaches for a small tray under the glass cases. “This is one of our engravable pieces,” she says, putting forth a small, gold band with three tiny diamonds inlaid in the center. “You could put an inscription on the inside of the band; she would be able to see it from where it hangs. It’s a little shiny, so she’d still have something to show off, like your friend said.”

Murphy turns it over in his hand, elbowing Raven in the side when she shares a conspiratorial grin with the saleswoman. He imagines it on a chain, resting against Emori’s skin, shimmering there. He imagines her playing with it while she talks, works, or thinks.

“Do you know what you’d put on the inside?” Raven asks softly.

All of a sudden, it comes to him: her words, whispered against his skin the night he fell in love with her. “Yeah. Yeah, I do.”

This was the ring. He was sure of it.

He holds the blue box carefully in his hands on the drive home. Next to him, Raven is practically vibrating with excitement.

“You’re getting engaged!” she shouts for the third time. “I can’t believe it! My little J is all grown up!”

“Shut up, Raven,” he says, but he’s laughing too, but mostly out of nerves. He’s going to do it. He’s going to ask her to marry him.

Holy shit.

“When are you going to do it?” Raven asks.

“Christmas.”

“You’re making me wait that long?!” Raven sighs dramatically. “That’s months away.”

“Only three. Calm down.” Murphy fiddles with the box. “I want all our friends there, but I don’t want to make it a thing. Just...make sure I get her name at the annual friend group gift exchange.”

Raven nods, sagely. “Consider it done.” She grins. “It’s part of being a best man.”

Murphy groans. “What are you going to do if Emori wants you as her maid of honor?”

“You picked me first,” Raven says. “She’ll have to make do with...Bellamy, or someone.”

Murphy can’t help but cringe. Raven cackles.

“What’s got you so excited?” Emori asks him that night as they make dinner. She’s at the sink, washing celery, and he’s spooning their soup into bowls. He made it out of rice, chicken and leftover pumpkin from the diner. They’re the only two out of everyone Murphy knows that like that concoction.

“Nothing,” Murphy says, reaching over to turn up the radio. They both like this song. “Just happy.”

Emori quirks an eyebrow at him. “You? Happy?” She gives him a teasing smile. “Something must be wrong.”

Murphy reaches for her left hand, leading her to duck under his arm in a slow twirl. “Just dance with me,” he says, spinning her again. Her feet shuffle clumsily on the tile before catching on the rhythm of the song.

“You know,” she murmurs, inching forward to rest her head on his chest. “I hope we get to live like this forever. You and me.”

Murphy kisses the top of her head and rests his chin there. “That’s the plan.”

She sighs happily. “Sure is.”

He thinks about the small box hidden inside one of his winter boots on the top shelf of his closet, that little thing that holds a small gold ring with six words printed in small script.

I’m hoping to visit Croatia at the end of august, if everything goes according to plan/covid doesn’t once again wreck my plans. I grew up in the northwestern US, and there people joke that the seasons are “fire season, road construction, winter” and winters are regularly so much snow, windy, and -20°, so not ideal conditions for enjoying them. Have you been to Grand Canyon or any of the other national parks in the southwest? They all look so beautiful, that’s one part of the US I would definitely like to see more of.

Hello, Drew! Chaos feels like the natural order of the world lately. It’s fine if you miss a day or two! I understand.

I actually never really wanted to be married myself. I figured if I did, I’d be at least 30. I wanted to get school done first. Then, after my previous relationship, I decided I wanted to be alone. Fate had different plans. I also wasn’t sure I wanted kids. Changed my mind. However one is plenty. One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone invalidates a person’s choices by saying “oh you’ll change your mind”. So even though I changed mine, I won’t be implying or outright denying that you don’t know your own mind.

My wedding was small. We eloped. It was a complicated situation with his family at the time, and we had decided to have the protection of a legal document since we were living together anyway. We picked randomly picked the day. Turned out to be Valentine’s Day. So, I, along with millions of other people, got married at a court house. In fact, someone was wearing my same dress that day! It was awkward. We have yet to have any celebration outside of that day. It was just my immediate family. However, I’ve never regretted marrying him and I still look back fondly on it. Fun fact: his parents found out we were married after we totaled their truck a few months later. Not so fun fact: that was the scariest accident I’ve been in to date. Accident wasn’t our fault and at least in this accident I had airbags. Ever been in an accident? Or in one without modern crash technology? It’s not very fun. Hurts a lot. I remember having to tell my father in law, on the side of the road, that Chase and I had actually gotten married. He was stunned but super supportive. Like I previously said, it was complicated . And I can get into it more, but there’s so much else to address right now!

We really like sitting in silence on our phones together! 😂 We are one of those annoying couples who like to do everything together. We are practically attached at the hip and the pandemic has only made it worse. He’s really interested in getting into D&D. We like playing video games together. We both love swimming. We both really want to travel. I’d love to take him to Europe. We like movies. But we both compliment our different likes and knowledge. He loves animated movies and animes and I love books. We both love art. He’s so good. He lets me do his makeup and nails from time to time. It doesn’t bother him at all. But not only that he’s really helpful at making sure I get my medicines and that I get rest when I need it. Throughout the lockdown he’d do all the running around so I wouldn’t have to go out since I’m immuno compromised. Sometimes I feel like he’s too good to me and the kid. I try to give back what I can. But honestly, he’s my best friend too.

Ahem. Enough gushing.

Other than some musicals and local symphonies, I’ve never been to any other concerts! Weird. I know! I’ve wanted to but never have. I’ve always wanted to see Imagine Dragons. Or Panic! at the Disco. There’s a few artists actually, I’d love to go see.

Croatia is BEAUTIFUL. My time in Europe was 2 weeks during July. I’m in love with it. If you go, Rijeka is wonderful. But near Rijeka is a mountain town called Fužine. It’s MAGICAL. I spent most of my time there. One of the upsides to staying in Rijeka is that it’s just a few hours away from Venice, too. Which. Was also breathtaking. I cried at the beauty of it. I have pictures of these places and I love looking at them. But they also make me a little sad. For multiple reasons. We had a layover in Munich on our way home and so we spent two days there as well. We drove up to the Neuschwanstein castle. It was amazing. But the most harrowing part of that stop was at the site of Dachau. I will never forget the heaviness of it. I had to stop halfway through. It was too much for my sensitivity. A privilege I will never forget.

I was able to visit Idaho (Rexburg) during October and December one year and I loved it. I’ve only ever been to Washington (coastal) and Oregon during the summer months. I wanted to go to school in Washington, originally. Thought I’d move up there. Now the goal is to ultimately expat. Canada, likely. We will see if that ever pans out, though.

I’ve been to the Grand Canyon once when I was 10 or 11(?). We went during December to ride the “Polar Express”. It’s a special event they run during the winter months before Christmas. We were snowed in so we stayed an extra day and took the train to the Grand Canyon. So I got to see it all snowy and clear. It’s gorgeous and I highly recommend it once. I don’t know if I would ever really go back but I might take the kid someday. I at least want her to go on the Polar Express ride. It’s cute and fun for the kids. I was a little too old to fully enjoy it, but my little sister was roughly the right age.

I’ve been to several places in Arizona. The missions, Jerome, and I’ve also been to some places in Colorado and New Mexico. I can’t recall all their names off the top of my head and it was a long time ago.

I greatly appreciate anyone who can write poetry. It is not my forte. They come out childish and awkward. So, I keep those to myself. I write anything and everything. I have several stories, but three top priority right now. One is complete but needs serious reworking and revision. I started it when I was 15. It’s a paranormal mystery with romance. The second one is a fantasy that I started with a friend when I was 14/15. It has its own world and has taken on a life of its own since then. It’s massive. And the third one is a coming of age story. It’s my most delicate one. I started it when I was 21. I have shared an excerpt on tumblr of this one. It’s my most complicated one yet. Like any artist, I’m constantly second guessing my work and lamenting my talent.

This weekend has been mostly spent recharging. I’ve been helping my mom with a project. And of course swimming. I’m a child at heart and I bought myself a mermaid tail. I’ve elevated my pool game. It’s so much fun but my body is yelling at me. I’m not as energetic as I was in my youth. You mentioned marching band? You and I really do have much in common! Not only are you a flautist, but a marching one at that?! I marched in high for two years. I loved it but I started to get burned out. And then I started horseback riding and planned to do that instead. My parents couldn’t afford to do both. And then I caught mono. Looking back, I understand why my mono knocked me out for so long (it’s linked to my autoimmune issues) but at the time every one of my friends thought I was being dramatic. It was kind of a horrible experience. So even if I had signed up for band my junior year, I would’ve had to quit. And then my senior year I signed up for this program that put me through a college program to get my EMT-B. I didn’t take band at all that year. Now I just play for myself. Ideally I’d learn every instrument.

I actually couldn’t sing very well for the longest time. Which was ironic because my mom was operatically trained. My older sister was also trained. And my little sister preferred chorus to band. I ended up teaching myself later. So now I don’t sound terrible but I’m not going to take my solo act on the road anytime soon.

If I can teach myself makeup, art, instruments, and other various things, then maybe I can also someday be brave enough to put myself out there on the internet. And if I do, I will definitely let you know! I will at least have 3 subscribers. 😂
