i enjoy davekat well enough but i wish most meteorstuck fics didn't gloss over karkats (and daves but ill be focusing on karkat here's) previous relationships LOL. like there will be a surface level acknowledge of eachothers mutual past feelings for terezi, but that's it.

there is noooo way karkat doesn't feel terrible over sollux choosing not to go on the meteor. but i have never read anything that has him guilting over that!! pretty much everything ive read glosses over all his old friends entirely besides guilt for some of their deaths. whether u read their relationship as platonic or some sort of quadrant, karkat absolutely would beat himself up over his best fucking friend choosing not to go.

i think he'd feel so guilty over sollux that he'd feel bad for thinking about it at all, because he has more pressing things to feel guilty over (like the death of his friends), and it would be the perfect self loathing spiral everyone likes to write him in. he'd wonder why hes so bothered when sollux made a decision to make himself happy, he'd wonder why he was so caught on it when some of his friends were fucking dead, he'd stay up at night picking apart their interactions on the meteor looking for some thing he said that made sollux decide to leave. even when he looks at the logical points like the fact they needed both solluxs & aradias psychic powers to move the meteor, he'd still feel terrible. he'd wonder why sollux couldn't have found a way to get on the meteor anyways. when he finds out jade was powering her own ship despite being on it, he'd probably flip his shit and go down another self deprecating spiral of wondering why he sollux didn't try to do that too. karkat could go on and on and on thinking about how he wasn't guaranteed to ever have contact with sollux again. sollux & dave are pretty similar chatacters; he probably looked at dave and so many things reminded him of sollux. but no! no one writes these thoughts.

and like! there is drama potential here for the davekat enjoyers, if they didn't have enough angst already! some people lightly brush on daves past feelings for jade and maybe feeling weird about acting on new feelings when he never got closure on the old ones, but i feel like that sentiment could be much better applied to karkat and sollux. maybe karkat feels guilty doing anything with dave knowing his whole life he imagined being in (or was in) some quadrant w/ sollux, and now that doors closed and he doesn't know if he'll ever see sollux again. he could dramatize whether or not this temporary meteor fling was worth throwing out years of feelings for. this could lead 2 a good repression plot, where karkat has to get over these feelings and realize it's irrational to hold onto the /possibility/ of a relationship with someone he may never see again. or maybe he ends up feeling so guilty that it turns into an unrequited situation with dave where hes never able to end up loving him like that. ive seen sooo many fics of characters in relationships where they pretended the other person was someone else, you could do that! there r so many angsty possibilities!!!!!

tldr i just wish sollux wasn't as forgotten of a character LOL

in all honesty i have a distaste for davekat especially in the typical fandomification of their personalities so this comparison left a bad taste in my mouth initially. but! upon some thought you have a good point tbh. i'd probably compare songxue more to aravris in all honesty, tho! (with xue yang being closer to vriska & aradia being closer to song lan. idk. theres something there. especially with the whole.. sollux thing.)

canon timeline revenge cycle and whatnot leaning towards pitch shipping + when put into a less conflict-based au they actually fall very lovely sweetly into something more flushed. this may be my yuri bias admittedly. i havent really thought too hard on quadrants for mdzs pairings but theres definitely potential for pretty much every one of them with songxue when you think about it.

11. Least favorite kid?

Jake. I know he's thematically important but he annoys me so much 😭 I can't help seeing him as a source of tension in his friend group, despite the fact that he actively despises their romantic advances. I used to dislike all of the alpha kids, but the other three have grown on me a lot. I don't think I actively dislike any of them anymore, but Jake is difficult for me to really enjoy as a character.

12. Least favorite troll?

Tavros. I know, I know, it's absolutely horrible that the Vriska fan dislikes Tavros. Again, I don't actively dislike any of the trolls, Tavros just fails to captivate me. Everyone else I've had phases for. Tavros? Well. He never really got a chance to make anything of himself, which is mostly the narrative and Vriska's fault, but as a result, he's just a difficult character for me to enjoy.

18. NOTP?

This is a difficult one!! I don't interact with a lot of ship content for pairings I don't like, so I've actually forgotten any more niche pairings I don't ship. The most popular ships I dislike are probably DaveKat and DirkJake. I have my reasons for them both, but it mostly comes down to the fact that a lot of times, when a pairing gets popular, bad content for them becomes really prevalent and difficult to avoid.

I used to be a DaveKat shipper around the time of Homestuck^2, but most of the content I see for it feels really out of character -- even in Homestuck^2 itself, I was just really starved for content. Another thing that contributes to my dislike of this ship is a huge rise of people getting into the fandom just to ship DaveKat. The "yeah I skipped to act 4, got bored, and went to AO3" sort that DaveKat tends to attract. Not a criticism of the ship itself, it just makes it unpalatable for me.

I think it's in part because, when you refuse to see your favorite pair outside of the context of shipping them together, they lose a lot of what makes them individuals. I see this for most ships, but particularly very popular pairings. DirkJake is the same for me, plus their canon relationship is really . . . less than ideal in a way that I don't care to imagine salvaging because I don't enjoy Jake as a character.

Alright, one TWO more that I just remembered from the earlier days. JohnDave. To me they're friends! Very good friends. Best bros, even. I love to imagine their silly and wicked cool antics, I don't like to imagine them together -- which is really ironic, actually, because I found out what fanfiction was after googling something related to Homestuck for an essay I was writing for fun, which, of course, led me straight to some JohnDave.

FINALLY, EriSol also used to be a NOTP . . . ECIP actually started out because I was asking myself the question: how can I make these two work? Now I am, for better or worse, a bona fide EriSol shipper. It's not the worst thing in the world!

31. What do you think of the ancestors?

I don't think they were explored enough for me to have a big opinion on them. In my opinion, they were most important to canon in how they shaped the trolls. For example, Mindfang's role as a role model for Vriska, and how these historical figures shaped the FLARPing and relationships of their ecto-offspring. They also provide a lot of historical context for Alternia, but I honestly can't see them as characters in and of themselves.

Of course. And thank you for apologizing for things. I think two other points of context might help clear up why exactly people are reacting as they are. In regards to the matter of race, the reason this is getting brought up is due to a historically attested prioritization of white characters over characters of color like Suletta. In addition to that prioritization there have been problems across a variety of fandoms with racism. Both in regards to comments made about characters, especially black characters, and to fans of colors, with black fans of color often getting the worst treatment.

As I am not black and I am a mixed person who reads as white to many, I'm not the most qualified person to speak on this matter. Princess Weekes has several youtube videos that go over the matter though and in a variety of fandoms. Her one video responding to that one article about Reylo fans receiving criticism comes to mind immediately. As she does go heavily into the experience of black Star Wars fans and fans of the non-white characters like Rose and most especially Finn. I'd go and give that video at the very least a watch to get at least something of an understanding of why the whiteness of destiel keeps being brought up.

The second matter that you brought up is gender. And again this is a matter of a complicated and long history, one I'm more privy to myself as someone who has shipped f/f primarily for the majority of my life. Which is to say that men in fiction have been historically prioritized and that m/m itself is often so. And as with the issue of race, this has led to harassment and general unpleasantness.

An example is within Gundam, honestly. Gundam Wing was The Big Show when I was a kid. Alphabet shipping, the shipping of the boys in Wing, was a very big deal in anime fandom. However, it didn't stay at just peacefully shipping the boys. Relena Peacecraft, the female protagonist of the series, was heavily demonized by a portion of the fanbase since she was in the way of a popular m/m ship due to being the canonical love interest of series protagonist Heero Yuy. When not demonized, she was derided as being boring or whiny.

Similar instances of such things can be found across a wide variety of fandoms and often shows itself in the form of character assassination in fanfic. An older trend being taking the canon female love interest and making her a homophobic harpy. A now recent trend being to make her the "mean lesbian" friend whose existence is solely to wingman for and prop up a slash ship.

Another related trend is that of background lesbians, the practice of tagging an f/f ship in a fic when they are not the focus of the fic. The worst cases of this involve the f/f ship literally getting a single sentence mention. Homestuck fandom had a very bad problem with this wherein a lot of fics on ao3 that tagged rosemary, the big canon f/f ship in the comic, were actually davekat fics that had maybe a sentence long mention of rosemary. With ao3 in particular this trend of tagging background ships makes finding f/f ship fic actually a bit of a task. I myself use an addon that restricts my search to fics with my ship as the first presented ship. Others utilize various tricks with ao3's filters. However none of these measures are foolproof.

And even then you are often looking at a fraction of the content that beloved slash ships will get. A lot of my ships have only around 50 fics total for them on ao3. Some I have better luck on sites like ff.net. But generally I am lucky if I get 50 fics. And this isn't just a fandom specific issue. It is a sitewide matter. The f/f tag on ao3 only recently hit 1 million individual works. I believe as of 2023 levels of recently hit.

This also hasn't stayed in just the realm of a lack of fanfic or treating female characters terribly. With f/f ships in specific, which are my wheelhouse, this has also involved harassment and bigotry. One of my earliest fandom experiences was excitedly showing some BL loving friends of mine Maria-sama ga Miteru, a favorite of yuri fans in the early 2000s. They called the yuri comic I was excited about gross and asked if I was a lesbian. The look on their faces was one of obvious disgust. From that period on they would make jokes about predatory lesbians, especially our gym teacher. And they had a great distaste for a friend of mine who I sapphic feelings for. Not ones either of us spoke of personally but which were obvious to anyone watching us interact. I've met other women with similar experiences growing up and a yuri manga I am fond of called Still Sick involves this happening to one of the main characters.

If you talk to korrasami shippers and bubbline shippers who were around for when those shows were airing you'll find a lot of accounts of being harassed by other fans for their ships. I've seen many talk about how they were dismissed as "horny teenage boys" for their ships. I myself left Adventure Time fandom after numerous instances of being called an "idiot" and a "pervert" over my fondness for bubbline. Many have been called lesbophobic slurs.

This also isn't a behavior that is entirely limited to the past either. There had been a femslash shipping event for Assassin's Creed: Valhalla. The rules allowed for the main character to be bisexual and even polyamorous, and some of the staff were bi themselves. The rules also clearly stated that trans interpretations of the character were permitted, including multigender or genderfluid ones. The sole caveat was that the character could not be a monogendered man. People harassed the staff and claimed they were both transphobic and biphobic for wanting to have an event that was exclusively sapphic. No one was terribly surprised by this happening, even outside the Assassin's Creed fanbase. We were upset, but also tired. Because this sort of thing has been happening for decades now and shows no signs of actually stopping.

And it's with that context in mind, some of it backed up by statistical data on ao3 itself, that there are these "yuri warrior" pushes in polls like these. It's years of being dismissed, ignored, insulted and harassed for having an interest in f/f and in women in fiction in general. I can understand that without this context it might look strange and seem hurtful. But I do hope this helps you get why people keep saying things like "Can women finally get a win?" over this poll.

The internet's a large place. Tumblr is too. We've all got our own corners of it. And I think it's a good idea to keep in mind that maybe there's a context that's being missed during things like this. It's also a good idea to go and look outside your own corner at times. I may not be into live action tv fandom myself, but I do like hearing fans of it talk about their shows and the history of their fandoms. Partly because people passionately talking about a thing is fun and partly because it helps give me greater context for just how wide and varied fandom actually is.

12. What is your favorite crack ship? I don't really do those. I'm uncreative there needs to be something in canon to catch my interest. OR just. a HUMONGOUS amount of fanon. Like, by all accounts, Atsutodo (atsushi and Todomatsu from Osomatsu-san) would be a crackship, Atsushi appeared in one episode as a side character in one skit, but the fandom took to it so hard I'm not sure if it counts anymore. One of the more popular ships in the whole fandom is kindof a gray area... Then again DOES a crackship have to also be a rarepair..?

13. What is the couple you read the most fanfics about? Sigh. Been reading davekat and johndave lately. Been TRYING to read roxycallie but they're such a sideship....

14. What do most of your ships usually have in common? Friends to lovers, one of them is or is made out by fandom to be homophobic. For my het ships, a height gap seems to be a reccuring theme, although to a lesser extent than the uh homophobia.

15. What you absolutely hate in a ship? That's much harder to name than things I like... Anything CAN theoretically be sold to me in the right circumstances.

okay so like is it just me or do all versions of canon meenkat suck?

In homestuck the ship is very iffy due to the age gap [and the fact that meenah just got out of a predatory relationship with (vriska)]

But is hs^2 it's somehow worse???? First of all karkat is like 39 I think, AND MEENAH IS STILL 19!! Like holy shit thats an even bigger age gap then in hs. It's made even worse by the patreon posts and that I feel like ppl in this fandom think it's okay to ship now cuz "karkat is an adult now!!" while completely forgetting the age of meenah?

The only that this ship could work is if meenah was brought back to life at the same time karkat was around her age, but the hs^2 writers couldnt do that for some reason.

I don't think she is still 19 by the time Meenah and Karkat met in Epilogues. Some years have passed since it shown that Harry and Tavros Crocker were around before the reunion. With Tavros Crocker described being so short that he couldn't reach the doorknob. And later it is said that 10 years had gone by since John had talked with Terezi. So by then, Harry and Tavros would be teens by that point. At best, we can assume that Harry and Tavros were 5 years old by the time we were first shown them, since in HSBC, they are 15 years old. So likely somewhere within the extra 5 years before HSBC official starts, Karkat and Meenah met and then spent time together during it to prepare their war against Jane. At best, she would be 20-24 during Epilogues, with 24 being the best estimate of her age by Beyond Canon. Of course, Karkat was 20 years old by the end of the webcomic, so add in 15 years since we got Omega Kids, he would be 35 years old. So yes, the age gap is still present and doesn't help that the team confirmed that the did indeed fucked. And I guess the reason why nobody addresses Karkat being the pedophile now is either: A. Karkat will fuck Dave later on, so his one fling with Meenah won't matter because he will be GAY. Homosexuality erases pedophilia allegations, don't you know? Why else people excused Meenah x Vriska being a thing years back too? It's not because all the characters are fictional and people could ship whatever they wanted or the fandom wanted more lesbians after Rosemary had been canon. B. People think Meenah, a fuchsiablood in power, was bad because hemospectrum. But because Karkat is older than her despite being mutantblood, he has better authority over the person who would have became Sea Hitler in an alternate timeline. C. They assume that now that they are adults, even with the similar big age gap, they are at least consenting adults. So that's why they are fine with a 24 year old fucking with a 35 year old bastard. Whichever the reason is, by the end of Beyond Canon, the age gap thing will never be addressed by any of the main cast, Davekat will happen, and the shitty sequel ends on a disgusting brown note. James Roach and HICU will never address how old Karkat and Meenah are and just make people assume they are the same age because they are now both drawn like adults, so you don't have to worry about their teen sprites doing adult things despite they would still be adults in the sequel and they had only kept the teen sprite looks for stupid familiarity bullshit. Because god forbid if we make eyeless adults for both humans and trolls despite that The Condesce (an adult troll herself) was shown having eyes or at least, eyewear, to make them still stand out and recognizable.

22) tbh im pretty basic in what i like, so i dont think a lot of things i like in canon get ignored . HOWEVER. i will say the power of friendship is a bit underrated in the hs fandom. its not as bad now ofc but i think the friendships between the beta trolls are so wonderful…. erikat friendship WONDERFUL!!! tavradia friendship WONDERFUL!!! eqvris friendship WONDERFUL!!!

i feel its time to tell homestuck tumblr a story.

to preface: i have been a fan of homestuck since at least 2017. i dont have an exact on this bc the earliest evidence i have of me online outwardly presenting myself as a fan. i know, however that i found homestuck randomly and started interacting with fan content first, and that this makes placing when i actually became a fan is, though still only from 2016-17.

i really had my favorite ships growing up. mind you, i was 11 in 2017, so really not mature yet to be online, or read homestuck, much less the ungodly amount of shippy fanfiction i read. my mains were probably red davekat, pitch erisol, red rosemary, pale equinep, and red? cronkri. again idk how all of these ships have held up. i really only still interact with davekat, rosemary, and equinep bc ik ppl still like them and theyre my favorite little guys :3c

i did have favorites though, davekat and erisol. i LOVED those ships. i have davekat pfps on accounts and erisol and davekat were my lock/homescreens. i loved them.

so. in early 2018 i started at a private school where the school colors are purple and yellow. long story short this school was horrible and traumatizing. and that led to me developing a fear of/aversion to the colors purple and yellow being paired bc it reminded me of those years. but in 2021 I started the new school year with a new school. public school was/is a lot better and healing for me. i am working out this fear now and its mostly gone? it has to be certain shades now so that makes it a lot easier to live.

but i am now, once again, approaching erisol again. it was one of my top 5 ships when i was younger so i wanna see how it holds up now. but im doing that on my own, reading homestuck from where i last left off and stuff since i hadn't gotten very far anyway.

The Dirkjake Meta masterpost

Let’s clear the most frequently asked question right off the bat:

“Is Dirkjake abusive?” | “Is Dirkjake toxic?”

No. Dirk and Jake’s romantic relationship is based on mutual interest and a supportive friendship established years prior to the events of the main story. What a reader experiences over the course of Homestuck act 6 is how their insecurities boil to an all-time high once the Game is afoot, aggravating some of their worst habits - Like Dirk’s inability to communicate honestly without hiding behind one of his splinters (may they be metaphorical or literal), and Jake’s practiced avoidance in the face of confronting and potentially upsetting one of his friends about their shitty behavior - until it ultimately leads to a breakup. But an imperfect first date does not abuse make. They were both barely 16, under ridiculously stressful and hopeless circumstances (over 5 months trapped inside a dead session populated only by ruin and decay!), and Homestuck ends on a note of reconnection, both of them making the choice to remain close after the immediate danger has been dealt with. I mean, at the end of the credits sequence they’ve made up, are nonsensically playing ball together, and have elected to share a home in the consort kingdom, so I don’t think this is an exaggeration.

Does Rose’s alcoholism in the Game Over timeline mean that Rosekan is abusive/toxic because Rose was not sober enough to consent on a routinely basis and her frequent slurring and fraught grasp on reality canonically upset Kanaya to the point of pushing her to scream? No. They’re teens in an imperfect relationship that is new to both of them, and at the end of Homestuck, they’ve also gone through a more forceful do-over.

Does Jade, June & Dave(sprite)’s friendship turning sour during their 3 year space trip held in extreme isolation, coinciding with jade and davesprite’s breakup, which upsets their dynamic enough that june threatens to beat him with her golden hammer in the middle of a morbid tantrum about how everything sucks mean that they’re not friends anymore and their relationship is toxic now? No. For similar reasons as those cited above.

Hell, the possibility of ‘Davekat’ was deemed abusive when it was still a weird and janky rarepair competing with the other two big Dave and Karkat ships. At the time, both fandom favorites set them up with the series’ protagonist, and Davekat was the ugly duckling. There were arguments about how it was ‘inherently toxic’ because they traded barbs on a daily basis, went after the same troll girl, suplexed one another onto a hard table, and Karkat’s perpetual screaming was cited as an *undoubtedly* grave trigger for Dave’s PTSD, among other threaded squabbles marking them as ‘permanently incompatible’. Through the course of act 6, Dave and Karkat’s bond eventually deepens, and they also end up together. Sensing a pattern here.

Point being: Relationships in Homestuck are not an smooth-sailing affair, never have been, and through the many years of fandom many people have interpreted them in the worst possible ways, but that isn’t a guarantee of truth, just a matter of individual perception. 

And now you may be thinking, okay, I’m willing to humor the thought DirkJake isn’t as bad as the 2013 discourse posts written by fellow teens with a limited POV on relationships vehemently claimed it was, but I still don’t see what’s the big deal. These characters don’t make a lot of sense in my brain, individually or together.
