Life in Miniature (One)
Part of: Steve Deserves Good Parents, Actually Debbie and Fester Addams One | Two | Three Rick and Evelyn O'Connell One | Two Harley Quinn One 10th Doctor and Rose One | Two (on the way!) Scooby Gang (there are plans for this one lmao, so plz be patient with me orz) Jedediah and Octavius (from Night at the Museum) One (you're here!)
There will be more Jedtavius in the next parts I promise, I just thought this would be a funner introduction to the AU lmao
I just love those little guy dudes from the museum so much hfjdks and now we get two pairs of them
Also, fun fact, I took Steve's Roman name from, like, an actual king of Rome. The actual sixth king. He seemed like a chill dude.
Anyway, there's a meme at the end and as always, if you see any typos, no you didn't ;)
---------
When Robin took this job as a night guard, she didn't think the previous guard's words about history coming to life at night was, you know, real. She thought it was a joke, a predictable and corny joke, but a joke nonetheless.
But now, after being chased by a T-Rex, getting saved by Theodore Roosevelt, and almost being taken captive by fucking Attila the Hun, Robin thinks this job definitely isn't worth $16.50 an hour. Then again, this is the best paying job she's had in a while, and she was living a nocturnal life anyway.
Robin groans, leaning against a wall in the diorama exhibit, and slides down to the floor. She lets her head fall back against the wall, her eyes slipping shut as she slides. "This is crazy. This is insane. I need to find a fucking weapon or something," she mutters.
"Pardon me," comes a voice close to her head, "but might you be the goddess Diana?"
As pick-up lines go, it's not the worst one she's heard. And, based on what she knows of Greek and Roman deities, it wouldn't be too far off. Still, she does not want to be hit on by whatever weird historical thing is trying to flirt with her.
Robin takes a deep breath, opens her eyes, and says, "Do I look like a goddess to you?"
She looks to her left where the voice came from, blinking when her gaze falls on a figurine that would barely reach her ankle. He's dressed in a toga with a chest plate, wrist guards, a sword on his waist, and a deep purple cape over his shoulders. His hair is, honestly, the most impressive thing Robin has ever seen, made only more impressive by the golden laurels resting perfectly against his temples.
He's looking at her with wide eyes, more awed than anything else. "Yes," he says. "I have heard the gods are larger than life."
Okay. Fair.
"Why Diana, man?" Robin asks.
He tilts his head, studying her for a moment, looking her up and down. "You give me the same feeling as statues of Noble Diana with her Huntresses," he explains, pausing for a moment before adding, "A feeling of kinship, perhaps?"
Oh. This...this is like ancient Roman gaydar, right? Robin snorts and turns, resting her elbow on her knee. "I'm definitely not Diana. My name is Robin. I'm the new night guard."
His eyes brighten some, his smile growing wider and certainly charming enough to make the hearts of a few girls and guys flutter. "I am Servius Tullius, Sixth King of Rome, son of Vulcan, weapons master of the gods, and adopted son of Jedediah, Cowboy King of the Wild West, and Octavius, general of the Roman army."
Robin nods, letting all of the those words process in her head before saying, "Mind if I call you Steve? You look like a Steve."
The Sixth King of Rome blinks, looking slightly confused before his eyes light up with understanding. "Ah! A nickname! Yes, I am familiar with this concept. You may call me Steve, Lady Robin, as a show of our newfound friendship."
"Yeah, don't call me Lady Robin. Just Robin is fine," she says, hesitating before offering her hand to Steve.
"As you wish, Just Robin," he says, stepping carefully onto her hand and remaining steady as she raises him higher.
Robin blinks, frowning slightly and about to correct him again when she sees his smile and realizes it's a joke. "Okay, very funny, dingus," she says, carefully poking his side.
"Is dingus another nickname? It sounds like an insult."
"It usually is, but it's affectionate when I say it."
"Oh! Yes, like when Ockie calls Jed a philistine."
"Uh, sure," Robin says, nodding once as she lets Steve move to stand on her shoulder. He quickly sits, holding onto the collar of her jacket as she carefully stands up. "Hey, you know what I'm supposed to do about the dinosaur bones?"
"Rexy? Yes, he enjoys a game of fetch."
"Fetch. Of course."
----------
"What's going on in that head of yours, little man?"
Steve blinks, looks over at Jedediah, and raises an eyebrow at him. "I'm taller than you," he says, gesturing to the good inch he has on Jedediah.
"As long as you're my son, you're a little man."
Doing his best to not laugh, Steve nods once and points to the new diorama set up in the middle of the room. It's a circular diorama, centered on an equally circular stage divided into sections. A cacophony of noise echoes from it, clashing as each slice of the stage fights for dominance. "I'm trying to figure out what in Jupiter's name they're doing over there," he says.
"Well, most of it sounds like music," Jedediah says, "I think."
"It's not any music I've heard before," Octavius says, coming to a stop next to Jedediah and frowning at the diorama. "I would have assumed it the unholy shrieking of the damned."
"Perhaps it would be nicer if they weren't all playing at once," Steve suggests, hands on his hips as he tilts his head.
"Oh, boy, there it is," Jedediah says, his grin audible in his tone. "He's got the King Face."
"What are your intentions, my boy?" Octavius asks.
Before Steve can answer, Robin strolls into the room, grinning when she sees the raving diorama in the middle. She walks over to Steve, Jedediah, and Octavius, crouches down, and says, "Hey, guys. I see you're checking out the History of Rock display."
"History of Rock?" Steve asks.
"What in the sweet hell do rocks have to do with that mess?" Jedediah asks, gesturing to the noisy stage.
Robin rolls her eyes. "No, like, rock music. It's a genre. Anyway, it was sponsored by some musician, so it's a permanent display now."
"And they will be...playing every night?" Octavius asks.
"Probably."
Steve frowns a little more and nods, rolling his shoulders back. "If they are a permanent fixture in our hallowed hall, they must be welcomed. As Sixth King of Rome, this duty falls upon my shoulders. Fathers, I shall return shortly."
"Woah, woah, hold your horses there, little man," Jedediah says, moving to stand in front of Steve. "You're not going anywhere near that snake pit without some back up."
"A few centurions, at least," Octavius agrees.
"I will have Robin. What better protection is there?"
Jedediah and Octavius glance at each other before looking at Robin. She grins and offers them a two finger salute. "I'll guard him with my life," she says, "It's literally my job."
With that reassurance, Jedediah and Octavius move out of the way. Steve steps onto Robin's hand and settles on her shoulder with practiced ease, ignoring the nervous flutter in his stomach at greeting the new museum residents. He hopes they'll get along, but he also knows the might of his Roman army and the railroad workers can crush any who stand in their way.
Robin stops next to the diorama, tilting her head as she studies it. This close, Steve can see the bands playing on each slice of stage, the instruments and fashion shifting as his gaze travels around it. "Uh, excuse me," Robin says, raising her voice.
The raucous noise from the diorama screeches to a halt, the feedback making Robin and Steve grimace slightly. "Uh, hi. We're the official welcome crew for the Hall of Miniatures here. So, I'll need someone to represent your, like, whole display," Robin says, glancing over the bands until she finds one she recognizes. "Okay, I know you guys, so I'll be designating you the spokesband. Now, could the lead singer step forward?"
Steve watches as someone on the "Corroded Coffin" (what an odd name for a band) slice of the stage steps forward. Robin offers her hand to them, carefully lifting it away once they step on. "Great, uh, carry on, I guess. But, like, maybe play some of your quieter stuff for a bit," she says, her words barely out before the music starts up and the crowds start screaming once more.
She sighs and just walks over to the bench, letting off the person on her hand before letting Steve slide down her arm in a move they spent nearly three weeks practicing if only because they knew it would look cool.
When he hops onto the bench, Steve walks up to the other miniature, a man his age with long hair and odd clothes with tears that Robin once said were fashionable. His instrument is still slung over his shoulders, resting casually against his hips much like Steve's sword. Steve suddenly finds himself thinking that the man looks a little like a warrior. An odd one, to be sure, but a handsome one nonetheless.
He flashes his most charming smile, lets his shoulders relax, and says, "My friend here is Robin, Guardian of Brooklyn. I am Servius Tullius, Sixth King of Rome, son of Vulcan, weapons master of the gods, and adopted son of Jedediah, Cowboy King of the Wild West, and Octavius, general of the Roman army. You, however, may call me Steve."
-----
As far as Eddie was concerned, nothing mattered so long as Corroded Coffin got to keep rocking in an endless concert. The energy never waned, the set list never grew boring, and the music never stopped. He was ready to inform this welcoming crew of just that and promise Hell on Earth if they tried to disrupt the music (angry concert goers are a force of nature), when the words just died in his throat.
Because the most gorgeous man he's ever seen slides down that giant lady's arm, easily and smoothly landing on the bench. Somehow, his hair is perfectly windswept, the golden laurels glinting in the lights above them. His purple cape flutters softly as he walks closer, his toned thighs on full display with the toga hem that falls to the middle of them. There's a sword on the guy's hip, a chest plate that Eddie wants to pull off, a smile he wants to taste, and a pair of freckles right next to each other on the guy's cheek he wants to drag his tongue across.
He misses most of the introduction because he's too busy staring. He gets the important bits, though: Robin, a king, son of a god, adopted son of two dads. Eddie licks his lips nervously, a grin of his own tugging at his lips as he steps forward and playfully bows. "It's an honor to meet you, Your Majesty," he says.
It's supposed to come out joking, a little poke at the guy's authority to see if he can be riled up. It actually comes out way too genuine, and Eddie has a sudden realization that he meant it. He absolutely will accept this guy as his king, actually. He'll fall to his knees before him right now if asked, and not just because it might give him a little peek under the dude's toga.
"Please, just call me Steve. There's no need to be so formal."
Eddie bites the inside of his cheek, hoping Steve doesn't realize that the things Eddie is thinking about (the things he wants to do to and with Steve) are just about the least formal things on this earth. "Good to know," he says, relieved his voice sounds normal as he stands up straight and offers his hand. "Name's Eddie Munson, uh, lead singer of Corroded Coffin."
Steve blinks, and his smile becomes a bit more genuine as he steps closer and clasps Eddie's forearm. "A fellow leader," he says, squeezing Eddie's arm. "Welcome to our museum."
"Y-yeah," Eddie says, his arm still tingling when Steve lets go. He clears his throat, idly tugging on a few strands of hair. "So, uh, what's the deal around here? I mean, giant women...Roman kings...cowboys, it looks like."
"Our noble museum is home to Pharoah Ahkmenrah and his tablet, which brings the exhibits to life each night," Steve explains.
"There's a few rules, though," Robin says, sitting down on the bench behind Steve. "One, no getting into fights. Two, be back in your display by sunrise. Three, no leaving the museum at night."
"What? Why not?"
"We have lost good exhibits to Sol Invictus's morning rays," Steve says, frowning slightly. "So, be careful."
Eddie stares at Steve with wide eyes as he nods, amazed at the fact that Steve seems to talk like that so genuinely. And the fact that Eddie is...kinda into it. Holy shit, that's not helping with Eddie's whole "fall to his knees" thing. He wouldn't mind some good old-fashioned worship if Steve would just smile at him again.
Maybe his prayers are heard, because Steve smiles at him again. "Wonderful," he says. "Now, Eddie, could I interest you in a tour of the museum tonight?"
"Oh, you could interest me in a lot of things, sweetheart," Eddie blurts out, his mouth running faster than his brain.
He snaps his jaw shut, relieved and horrified at Steve's slightly confused expression and Robin's "I know what you are" thousand-yard stare from over his shoulder. Before he can try to backtrack, Steve snaps, understanding in his eyes. "Ah! Sweetheart is a nickname, yes? I accept your offer of friendship."
Eddie clenches his jaw, stopping himself from saying that it's more than friendships he's offering, and smiles. "Yeah. A nickname. That's all. I'm just...a nickname kinda guy. I'll probably think of more, too, Stevie. Like that."
Steve practically beams, and Eddie feels his knees go weak. "I look forward to it," he says, turning on his heel to look at Robin, who thankfully schools her expression. "Robin, this is where we leave you for the night. You have my word that Eddie will be back in place before sunrise."
"Well, you two kids have fun," she says, grinning in a way that immediately puts Eddie on edge. "I'd better not hear about any funny business, though. Absolutely no bases should be reached tonight, and you'd better not do any conquering or pillaging."
She definitely looks at Eddie when she says that last bit. Eddie stiffens, doing his best to hold back a blush when Steve glances over at his, the confusion clear on his face. "Conquering requires more planning than this, Robin. I've told you before."
"Don't worry about it, dingus. Just have fun. Here, I'll even call a ride for you," she says, winking at them before turning, holding her fingers to her mouth, and whistling sharply.
Steve walks over to Eddie right as the ground starts to shake, easily catching him around the waist before he can lose his balance. "The shaking does take some getting used to," he says, his tone full of sympathy and obliviousness to the crisis Eddie is experiencing.
When his brain finally catches up enough to ask what he's talking about, a dinosaur skeleton slides into the room, its body wiggling excitedly as it growls. Eddie jerks back, the arm around his waist tightening some. "What the fuck?!" he shouts.
"Worry not," Steve says, leaning closer. His voice is a little softer now, his breath fanning over Eddie's ear. "This is Rexy, our steed for the evening. He's very friendly."
"Friendly," Eddie mumbles, letting himself be dragged over to Rexy and placed on the dinosaur's head by Robin. "The dinosaur is friendly."
"Many of the exhibits are," Steve tells him, grinning brightly as Rexy begins moving after a pet on the snout from Robin.
Eddie looks at him, feeling blinded by Steve's smile once more, and completely forgets about the living dinosaur skeleton.

new years reset
Remember my to-do list and how I still have to decide on my fifth final exam subject? Well…I put that aside and decided to focus on trying to find a uni degree that sounds interesting. My original plan of signing up to for an education major and becoming a teacher just doesn’t feel right at the moment. I’d study for 6-7 years plus up to 2 years of training until I’d finally be a teacher. It has been my dream for 10 years now but somehow the long (and apparently horrible) uni journey seems incredibly discouraging. So, onto finding alternatives.
Many people have encouraged me to become a social worker but given the rather poor payment in relation to the working conditions I have to decline that offer. I’d become a nurse but my emetophobia makes it pretty much impossible. Philosophy interest me a lot but I do not meet the criteria to sign up for it (as far as I know? It’s a bit hard to understand); same goes for both Latin and ancient Greek :/ English would be logical but I don’t know what I’d do afterwards; Politics would require another undergrad course and I have no idea what else to pick. Plus I fear I might not be smart enough for it…
So, what do I do now? Mourn the fact that I’m rather bad in all scientific subjects and that nothing interests me at the moment. Once I’m done with that I’ll look at different universities and other non-uni paths to take.

Just read Leo’s death scene in BOO and I’m hopping on the angst train before I keep reading and he comes back-
I wrote this short fic just now, about Frank and the Hephaestus cabin dealing with the aftermath of Leo’s sacrifice.
————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-
Frank took a deep breath, and approached the Hephaestus table, nervously. He recognised a few of his Camp Jupiter friends sitting with Leo’s siblings. Out of all the cabins, theirs seemed most affected by the battle. They ate their food with a sense of solemn melancholy, talking in low voices. Most of them, particularly the older ones, barely touched their food. Even the Romans, who had barely known Leo, seemed to share in their siblings’ grief. Frank could tell that Leo’s death had hit them all hard.
“Jake Mason, right?” He asked, addressing the guy sitting at the head of the table, slowly turning his spaghetti over with his fork, but not eating it.
“Yeah?”
Frank heaved the large wooden box he was carrying onto the table, trying to avoid people’s plates.
“Leo… he- he didn’t exactly leave a last will and testament…” Frank said, trying to keep his voice from choking up, “But he told me to give you guys this.”
He opened the box, and the campers peered inside.
“The lost scrolls of Archimedes,” He explained, “We found them underneath Rome. Leo’s been studying them. He wanted you to have them.”
“Woah…” One of the campers gasped. The others stared in awe at the scrolls in the box.
“There’s more,” Frank told them. With shaking hands, he reached into the box and pulled out from underneath the scrolls a collection of small, leather-bound notebooks, rectangular in shape, a different gold inscription stamped on the front in Ancient Greek.
“The Valdez Texts…” Frank announced, “Leo knew he was probably not gonna make it out of the battle. He wanted to make sure people could carry on his legacy. He copied all of his blueprints and schematics of the Argo II, all his inventions, all his findings and teachings, his notes, his unfinished projects, everything he learned and discovered- all into these notebooks for you guys to study, make improvements, learn from them, carry on his work.” He looked around at the table, “He told me it was very important that it was shared between children of both Hephaestus and Vulcan. No more fighting. No more stealing. He was a brother to you all, and…” He turned to the visitors from Camp Jupiter, “He told me to tell you he’s really sorry for launching a missile attack on your city… he hopes this helps you rebuild it.”
They all stared, speechless, at the texts.
One of the older-looking girls- Frank remembered her name was Nyssa- reached out and took one of the books in trembling fingers. She flipped through the pages, staring in awe. “Valdez made all this?”
“Well, me and Hazel helped him copy it all down,” Frank admitted, “His handwriting is atrocious.”
He suddenly felt a sharp pang of sadness. Was, he thought, his handwriting was atrocious.
Nyssa chuckled, sadly.
“And Hazel helped illustrate the drawings and diagrams. It was the least we could do to help you guys. And Leo wanted to make sure it was just as much a Roman thing as it was Greek.”
Nyssa handed her copy to one of her newfound siblings from Camp Jupiter, and picked up another, “And they’re ours? To share? The scrolls too?”
Frank nodded, “Leo thought it was only right that you all should have them. All his rough work was destroyed when the Argo II broke apart, but he made sure these made it out.”
It had been Buford’s last act of service to his master. As soon as they’d arrived at Camp Half-Blood, that wonderful little table had taken the crate of valuables and flown away to safety before the ship could explode. Once the battle was over, he had flown back to Frank, and with one last forlorn “Put some clothes on” from the Coach Hedge hologram, the table had deactivated. Frank didn’t want to just throw Buford away, so he’d kept it as a writing desk. He’d study, map, plan, and create on it, just like how Leo would’ve wanted. He planned to take him back with him to Camp Jupiter- a little piece of him to stay with Frank forever.
He looked at the pile of books. He thought it was strange- Leo’s life’s work condensed into just a few notebooks. His entire legacy on the table in front of them. But Leo was a smart guy. He knew these books would be passed down for generations, much like Archimedes’ texts. Every Greek and Roman scholar that people talk about still to this day- Hippocrates, Pythagoras, Galen- was remembered because they wrote stuff down. And Leo knew the importance of that. He wasn’t just giving his siblings some dusty notebooks, he was giving them knowledge. He was giving them power. Frank’s mouth twisted into a sad smile. It was exactly the kind of genius thing Leo would do. He just couldn’t believe he was gone.
He picked up another notebook, and turned to a random page and began to read in his head:
Valdez Philosophy No. 730- One question a good mechanic must always ask themselves is: Is it worth it? Is it a problem that’s worth solving? Is it a machine worth inventing? Don’t get me wrong, I love a Hydraulic Chicken Launcher as much as the next mad scientist- but sometimes the cost of time and materials outweigh the necessity for it.
But if the machine can help out a friend, and maybe even save a life?
That’s never not worth your time.
Frank’s eyes welled with tears. Underneath the words was a sketch of something Frank recognised. It was the pouch that Leo had made for him to keep his firewood safe.
That’s never not worth your time.
After everything they’d been through together, after the way Frank had treated Leo when they’d first met, after all the death-glares and the snide remarks and the passive-aggressive comments that weren’t entirely meant in kindness- Leo still cared for Frank. He still took the time to make sure he could keep him safe. He still felt like Frank was worth it. This kid always put other people first, to the point where he had died to do so. He was brave, and heroic. He was the reason Frank no longer feared fire. He’d changed his life. Frank owed him everything. Now, he’d never get to repay that debt.
————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-
Anyway, I’m gonna go cry now. Platonic Valzhang is everything to me.

okay so i talk abt loving hozier all the time but i never rlly delve into how fucking significant his music is. and i think, in light of the recent election, it’s time to do so
so here’s my analysis on hozier’s song “swan upon leda”
(ignore if some things are worded weirdly, this was initially written for my sister & my sister only. so it might seem like i’m talking to u as a friend, that’s why!) also if there are any inaccuracies in the myths' interpretations, PLEASE lmk!
anyway here it is!!!
So, before we get into the lyrics themselves let’s take a little peeksie at the song’s background!
Not only is this one of his most political works, but it was also published three years after he literally ghosted the world. And that only makes its debut so much more significant seeing as he’d taken the time to make sure he’d have everyone’s attention when releasing it.
Also, the title is so so so fucking important to take into account when studying this piece of fucking ART. It’s based off of the Greek myth ‘Leda and the Swan’. In this tale, Zeus is heavily attracted to a woman named Leda and transforms her into a swan before raping and impregnating her.
In turn, Hozier connects this story (and also the overarching theme of Zeus being the most powerful god despite being a rapist and child predator COUGHTRUMPCOUGH) to the way women are denied their reproductive rights & how these horrid occurrences effect all of those involved, not just the woman who bears the burden.
A husband waits outside A crying child pushes a child Into the night She was told he would come this time
He paints a picture here, putting an unnamed protagonist into a modern-day tale of patriarchally inflicted torment. The waiting husband symbolizes Zeus in the ancient context as well as an unnamed rapist in modern context. He waits and waits, never acting. He stands outside, so very close to where the problem lies and yet does nothing.
The crying child is inspired by Leda & made into the song’s protagonist, depicted as underage and therefore not able to give her full consent to this outcome. The child she pushes is the one that had been forced upon her, it going into the night symbolizing an untold future. Something she hadn’t asked for and yet is thrusted into doing. Her fear means nothing to the waiting husband & means even less to society as a whole. So, she does it scared. She does it with tears streaming down her face because deep, deep down she knows she has nobody to aid her in this despite having been promised to have help; having been promised that he would come this time.
Without leaving so much as a feather behind To enact, at last, the perfect plan
This illustrates the parallelism of Leda having been turned to a swan and the unnamed child having been forced into the life of a mother. Not leaving a feather behind, to Leda, represents the lack of proof she’d had to Zeus’s cruelty. He’d simply found her, transformed her, impregnated, transformed her back, and left. Now, had a feather been left, she’d have had proof. She’d have been believed. But that kind of miracle never happens for rape victims, now does it? No, instead she was forced to carry a ton more children by a husband that didn’t believe that she’d been raped by Zeus. This, in many ways, connects to real day occurrences that I don’t believe I need to digress on each individually. Though, I happily would if it proves my point mores.
The perfect plan he speaks of is the men getting away with it. In every tale, in every real-time situation, the men get away. They get what they want from the woman, leave her (and their newly formed fetus) to rot, and leave to return to their wives. The perfect plan, is it not?
The gateway to the world Was still outside of reach of him Would never belong to angels, Had never belonged to men.
This. This is why I love Andrew Hozier-Byrne, ladies and gentlemen.
As he speaks of a “gateway to the world”, he’s referring to childbirth. To bring a child into the world is a gateway, correct? It’s a bit of inexplicable divinity, pregnancy. To create an entire being with naught but your own bodily organs and cells? Those of which had been made by a woman before you? Yeah, it’s pretty fucking insane to me. Anyway.
Okay back on topic. The point is, this amazing occurrence he discusses is said to still out of reach to “him”. This unnamed male figure can be both Zeus in the myth or the husband in the modern altercation. This means that, despite them having forced themselves upon these beautiful souls, they haven’t a say in gateway. They don’t have a single fucking important role to play in the birth itself. They’re just the sperm.
And then Hozier goes even further. Not only does he say that the rapists are unfit for the sanctitude of childbirth, but heaven itself is unfit. The angels up above. Zeus. God. Whatever religious aspect you want to praise; it doesn’t hold a candle to the divinity that is a woman. As are the men. All men. Mankind itself, if you will. Regardless of your role or title or holiness, you’re all fucking useless when it comes to the sacred act of conceiving, creating, then bearing another human.
After the first chorus, the image alters to another scenario:
A grandmother smuggling meds Past where the god-child soldier, Setanta, stood dead Our graceful turner of heads Weaves through the checkpoints like a needle and thread
This shows a grandmother stealing medicine for an abortion, likely for a daughter or granddaughter. This shows the generational struggle to make the right choice. As it feels both revolutionary and also something she’d been doing her whole life. Fighting for rights.
Now, Setanta, as referred to in the song, is based off of an Irish myth. In this myth, Setanta is the name of a child who had killed Culann’s guard dog in self-defense and therefore felt guilty. In a fit of grief for the life he’d stolen, Setanta offered to take its place and thereby became known as the “Hound of Culann”. His story is actually really interesting to read about, but I won’t go into too much detail on every depicted myth. As Hozier refers to the checkpoint soldiers as Setanta, he claims they’d “stood dead” at their watch — which goes to show that these soldiers are young (as Setanta had been) and he therefore protests against the way they’re surrendering their full lives to this ruined system of oppression that they enforce.
Someone’s frightened boy waves her on She offers a mother’s smile, and soon she’s gone. The gateway to the world The gun in a trembling hand
This right here is absolutely fucking amazing. Hozier connects both oppressor and oppressed, humanizing the grandmother to be retrieving meds for an unplanned pregnancy & also personifying the young boy as someone’s child who needed something so simple as a mother’s kindness to keep him going.
The way he does this goes to show what a talented person he is. Being able to make your audience sympathize with both the boy and the grandma is fucking magic. Rather than making the soldiers wholly evil and merciless, he made them children. The same children the lady is trying to prevent bringing into this world.
When nature unmakes the boundary The pillar of myth still stands The swan upon Leda Occupier upon ancient land
While the first chorus is a reminder of childbirth’s right to be protected and not put in the hands of religion or men, the second chorus ties it all together by showing the repetition in history and how it’s bound to repeat itself so long as man remains lustful for power. This shows that greed and brutality is an undeniable way to keep this horrid pattern living on. He laments that nature did not intend to have one rule over another (men over women; society over youth). And yet, somehow, it’ll forever remain unavoidable.
The pillar of myth still stands. That crumbling foundation it had been built o remains, standing tall as more and more men come to repeat it. And, in all honesty, I doubt it’ll ever end. The child will continue to push the child. The husband will continue to wait. The grandmother will continue to smuggle her rights. The boy will continue to tremble. And mother nature will continue to watch with a frown on her face as mankind sets more pillars atop her divinity.
All in all, Hozier is awesome sauce!!!

CW: SA and Murder
Speaking from the perspective of both a survivor of SA and as an academic majoring in studying History and Literature, I am absolutely perplexed by some of the choices that Jay made in regards to his desire to theme the musical around Ruthlessness. A fantastic work of art and I have a lot of respect for his work. But I personally would rather have had him add songs that built context to the world rather than him adding in and removing certain scenes of sexual assault.
I've seen it frequently asked why Penelope and Telemachus can't just kick the suitors out of their home, and that most of the general public, and most fandom spaces outside of classical Greek myth enjoyers, wouldn't know about Xenia (rules of hospitality in Ancient Greece), or that this is Zeus's domain, and that being a bad host could earn his punishment, and/or the punishment of the people around you.
If Jay has to add things to the musical that aren't in the original myth, I think the threat of Zeus potentially killing Penelope and Telemachus for being a bad hosts would be far more interesting to explore than thwarting a potential attempted SA. Imagine Zeus wishing to punish Odysseus for being ruthless and killing the suitors who, at most, were mostly just bad guests. No true plans of murder or assault, at most just empty threats and the occasional fight along with wrecking the house. And he has to face Zeus once again for breaking Xenia by being ruthless when, in reality, he didn't need to be in this moment. Make the themes come back around and show what really happens when you allow ruthlessness to consume you.
If keeping the attempted assault of Penelope was absolutely needed (which I would argue it really isn't), then he should have kept the SA of Odysseus and kept Calypso's agency and accountability. Rather than portray her as childish and naïve, portray her as youthful but still very much aware. Don't sugar coat what happened to Odysseus. Because men's SA is often erased, while women's SA is made into a spectacle, just like it was in the current canon. And in many college courses connected to script writing and stage production, you'd be flunked for adding gratuitous scenes like that if you're writing an adaptation/retelling.
Epic is fun, and Jay is very talented. But speaking academically, I feel like Jay needs to take the concept album back to the drawing board now and fix these issues.

I haven’t posted in a longgggg time. Mostly because I’ve been on the grind for some video games + money to buy a new saxophone because my girlie is LIVING on tape rn ;-;
Anyway, this is just…a random idea I’ve thought of. I don’t have big plans yet, but just a little something to get me back to writing again.
So this idea is inspired by both Monster High and Monsters University. And the thing that might make this a shitpost is acrually the heavy design inspo from Mike Wazowski…save me from my brain-
Tw: Drugging, Needles (very brief), no consent mini surgery (installment of a device), implied stalking
So, MC is at university doing whatever studies they wish. Of course, they get assigned to a dorm to make transportation easier.
(MC can be human or any creature you choose, I’m bullshitting here)
Upon first entrance, their roommate happens to be some cyclops dude trying to cut his hair. Just…casually cutting his hair. Miserably. The more he cuts, the more it looks like a bowlcut.
(Now, unlike Wazowski, he actually is tall and has a proper body and head. More similar to the Ancient Greek myth than Mike. However, minus the giant part.)
MC is kind of feeling awkward but tries to introduce themselves. But he’s just snipping away, while talking. He’s quite friendly, but more quiet.
It’s only until he’s about to chop off a huge chunk that MC offers to do his hair since it’s about to be a borderline disaster. He agrees.
So somehow MC is stuck with trimming hair while they get to know him better.
He talks of how he’s a computer engineering major. How he’s building some grand PC of his own to game on.
Then he mentions how his family immigrated from Cyprus and has been living in [country idfk] ever since. Then goes on a ramble how despite his family’s culture he is the biggest hater of olives. He mentions mother complains to him he is avoiding his true nature.
But then, he asks MC, “If you had to offer your heart to let someone survive, would you?”
Of course, MC is stunned and is confused why he’s asking such a question. But answers soon enough.
He smiles. His one eye squinting with happiness.
“I would. I absolutely would. Especially since it took me so long to find you.”
Before MC could question him, they feel his hand quickly grasp away the scissors. His agility is a mystery. He then gets some form of spray can bottlefrom his hoodie pocket and sprays their face.
A suspicious, cheap looking can. MC starts freaking out: the chemical smell, his strange statement and question, and even his facial expression creeping them out too.
But then, they start feeling woozy. Weak. Extreme weakness you could call it. Having to settle themselves on the nearby seat. Their mind shutting down quickly.
And in moments slump over the backrest of the chair like they’re sleeping.
The cyclops just continues to smile. Before reaching to pet their hair. “I lied. I never was a computer engineering major. I’m actually a chemical engineering major.” He swishes a hand through his hair. He then comments, “Not bad at the cut.”
Before he drags them to a different room. The room is already decorated with things they would tend to enjoy. The colours, furniture, and items.
He tucks them into bed. Before leaving the room briefly, getting a tiny device (like lady bug small) with a needle attached to it. He leans down and pricks their neck, installing the device. He settled it deep enough to hide, but not enough to cause permanent damage.
He finished the installment off with a bandaid. Giving one last pat to their head before leaving the room.
——————————————————
Similar to what I said before, this isn’t a fully established idea. Just something I thought of while doing random things.
Now, just a bit of explanation because that’s what I love doing. So, he has in fact been stalking MC before this event. I’m not sure how/when yet, but definitely for at least a year.
The suspicious can of chemicals he had is actually something he engineered himself. It’s just a chemical that can knock someone out for less than half an hour, while also having the side effect of losing their recent memory.
The device he installed is a tracker. A very detailed one.
I don’t have a name for him. And idk if I’ll ever will, but just know he is in fact evil Mike Wazowski. /j
I’m thinking to add other characters to this idea I have. Including more ladies because I realized I rarely ever write women. And we need some.
Alright I need snoozers.

regarding my post abt giving ppl homeric epithets—how do you even do that?? is there a list of adjectives floating around somewhere??? im just really confused
Hahaha well the answer I would give to flex would be; I am Greek and studied archeology and love homeric poems hahaha 😆
Basically our modern language and the ancient language are the same. It just changed form so yes we still need to translate and we do not fluently speak ancient Greek like it is our everyday speech but it is still the same so I understand the principles, how the language flows and how the words are formed (masculine feminine etc). All Greek kids do ancient Greek at school anyways so we know the basics of the ancient roots of our language.
Now enough with me showing off 😌 and let's go back to generating an as you say "homeric style epithet"; yes it is good to have a vocabulary behind. If you know Greek it doesn't need to be an adjective. You can form the adjective out of for example verb. (Remember I generated yours from a verb φρονέω/ώ which means "to think" or "to consider" or "to plan"). If you don't then yes it helps to have a pool or vocabulary behind so that you can do the transfiguration to the form or gender you need.
I would say you still need to know a bit how the grammar works so that you can form your words more realistically. There is no need to be anxious if they would make sense in an Ancient Greek context but the more grammatically correct it looks, the more accurate it seems. And you do not need to worry whether the ancient Greek word you pick is compatible with homeric Greek or it is closer to classical or hellenistic times Greek if you just aim to have fun around, I think.
Greeks also love combining words in epithets so don't be afraid for example Odysseus is called "πολύτροπος" from πολύ which means "much" or "many" and τρόπος or τροπή which means "way" or "turn" respectively. So combining words is also a thing. Small phrases also work. For example Calypso is called διά θεάων which means "of beauty" literally aka "beautiful" or "godly beautiful" both Calypso and Circe are called by epithet δεινή θεός "dreadful goddess" or "scary goddess" etc
Unless of course you do not care to make it in Greek and just write them in modern English and use them. Then there is no anxiety at all.
Hope this answers your questions 🙏

Books without overwhelming romance
I feel like a lot of books people talk about these days have a heavy focus on romance and spice, which really isn't my cup of tea, and it's hard to find good recommendations that don't have that. So here are some YA/adult books I love that don't have romance as a huge part of the plot!
(There may be some minor romantic subplots, but they aren't a major focus.)
The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles In June, 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the work farm where he has just served a year for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett’s intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother and head west where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden’s car. Together, they have hatched an altogether different plan for Emmett’s future.
A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.
Babel by R.F. Kuang 1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. The tower and its students are the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver-working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as the arcane craft serves the Empire's quest for colonization. For Robin, Oxford is a utopia dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge. But knowledge obeys power, and as a Chinese boy raised in Britain, Robin realizes serving Babel means betraying his motherland. As his studies progress, Robin finds himself caught between Babel and the shadowy Hermes Society, an organization dedicated to stopping imperial expansion. When Britain pursues an unjust war with China over silver and opium, Robin must decide . . .
This Savage Song by V.E. Schwab Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city—a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent—but he’s one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music. When the chance arises to keep an eye on Kate, who’s just been kicked out of her sixth boarding school and returned home, August jumps at it. But Kate discovers August’s secret, and after a failed assassination attempt the pair must flee for their lives.
Anxious People by Frederick Backman Viewing an apartment normally doesn’t turn into a life-or-death situation, but this particular open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes everyone in the apartment hostage. As the pressure mounts, the eight strangers begin slowly opening up to one another and reveal long-hidden truths. As police surround the premises and television channels broadcast the hostage situation live, the tension mounts and even deeper secrets are slowly revealed. Before long, the robber must decide which is the more terrifying prospect: going out to face the police, or staying in the apartment with this group of impossible people.
The Midnight Library by Matt Haig Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision. Faced with the possibility of changing her life for a new one, following a different career, undoing old breakups, realizing her dreams of becoming a glaciologist; she must search within herself as she travels through the Midnight Library to decide what is truly fulfilling in life, and what makes it worth living in the first place.
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will be busier still. By her brother's graveside, Liesel's life is changed when she picks up a single object, partially hidden in the snow. It is The Gravedigger's Handbook, left behind there by accident, and it is her first act of book thievery. So begins a love affair with books and words, as Liesel, with the help of her accordian-playing foster father, learns to read. Soon she is stealing books from Nazi book-burnings, the mayor's wife's library, wherever there are books to be found. But these are dangerous times. When Liesel's foster family hides a Jew in their basement, Liesel's world is both opened up, and closed down.
The synopses were all taken from Goodreads. Feel free to comment/DM me if you have any questions about these!

oookay. finished the secret history let’s go
so the book itself was split into two separate books, book I and book II. for clarity’s sake, im gonna further split it into 4 parts, part 1, 2, 3 and 4.
so first quick summary 4 bg information (no spoilers, as promised!!)
so basically a group of sexually repressed 20-something gays push the first homophobe they see off a cliff
OR
we’re told of Bunny’s murder in the first 2 pages, separating the book from other crime novels in that most of it was less a whodunnit and more of a whydunnit. in part 1, we’re introduced to richard papen, the narrator, who applied to a college, Hampden, miles away from his home state bc the colours on the brochure were pretty. he falls in with a group of students who are studying ancient greek; henry, bunny, francis, and camilla and charles (twins). So for a while, things look awesome. richard’s at a good college, with a large and tight-knit group of friends. What could go wrong?
this part transitions into two after richard and bunny find out about something terrible the rest of the group did in the past.
in part 2, bunny starts to become hostile to his friends after learning of it, while richard is able to wrap his head around it quite quickly. It escalates to the point where bunny becomes a potential threat, in that he might spill the beans to someone else. here, henry begins to plan bunny’s murder, and the rest of group just sort of goes along with it. parts 1 and 2 were pleasant, and paced really quickly. i was hooked the entire time. part 3 gets a bit dull, but it picks up again after Bunny’s funeral and hits the ground running.
book one ends right before bunny dies, and book two starts right after.
part 3 opens into a police investigation for bunny, who is believed to be missing until they find his body. in this part, tensions within the group begin to escalate. most of p. 3 is spent at bunny’s family’s house, who have invited many people bunny knew to stay with them during the funeral proceedings.
part 4, i believe begins after bunny’s body is found. here everyone’s like REALLY on edge. I will say most of it was just richard and francis running around frantically together while charles slowly goes insane with paranoia that henry’s trying to kill him as well. yk what, some of charles’ dialogue in this part is unsettlingly reminiscent of a panicked letter written by bunny that was found only after his death. In the book, there was only one passage of it shown, but that was enough. reading it, one could practically hear the panic, the desperation in bunny’s voice, one later mirrored in charles. vv psychologically thrillery. Im having hannibal flashbacks actually
and ohhh my god the ending. It was the climax to end all climaxes rae. ill never get over it. It was bittersweet ig, like all the best endings are.
one thing i noticed is that throughout the book, there are these like future reflections littered through. like ‘thinking back on it now, i wish i had. . .’  or ‘funny, that was the last time i ever saw him’, which have the story a sort of They Both Die at the End quality. yk, like a tragedy waiting to happen. I think i remember you doing something like that once, rae, in atydsp. I believe it was right in one of the summer 1977 chapters but i could be wrong. I think something like that really makes a story gut-wrenching, especially with the whole looming impermanence that the reader is all too aware of. the very last lines in the epilogue read, ‘I suppose at one time in my life I might have had any number of stories, but now there is no other. This is the only story I will ever be able to tell.’ see? whenever one of these bad boys is thrown in there, the scene changes from just a regular scene to something golden and significant. I think i once saw a post that read, ‘in movies time travellers are always scared of drastically changing their future by doing something small, but no one in the present ever things they can drastically change their future by doing something small’. thats what that reminds me of.
in the epilogue, richard refers to himself as a bystander, and he’s not wrong. he’s the narrator, of course, but in the end, the story’s not really about him. it’s about henry and bunny. I kind of get now, those lines at the end of the epilogue. Bunny’s death, and the events that subsequently followed, are so much more important than richard himself will ever be.
TSH is famous for that one line henry has, when charles asks him how he could possibly justify cold blooded murder, and henry says, ‘I prefer to think of it … as a redistribution of matter.’ but the line that got to me the most personally was an unassuming one, camilla in the epilogue about her twin brother charles: ‘actually, charles and i dont really talk anymore. It’s broken my Nana’s heart.’ not that she and charles should ever be in the same room together ever (very fucked up things happened), but it’s just the impermanence of relationships. how two people who may be at one point inseparable just drift apart. it’s not any one big fight or falling out that snaps the thread of their connection, but that thread just wearing out and growing thinner and thinner until eventually nothing is left anymore. thats what gets to me.
andd also one thing that kept happening was that i’d accidentally (or on purpose) flip a few pages ahead and reading something really fucking deranged or unexpected and just be like ‘huh???? what??? how?????’ and i’d go back and read up to that point until it made sense. i’d love love LOVE to give examples but i’m not allowed spoilers :(( the book is just the right amount of deranged though it rlly tickles ur brain in just the right spots without being overly ick
I think someone said that it was a francis/richard/charles/camilla/henry love pentagon but its most like a love diamond. grab a pen and paper folks, it gets complicated. imagine charles at the top, francis on the left, richard at the bottom, and camilla on the right, with a line extending from camilla to henry. there thats tsh.
all in all 8/10!! if it’s on your reading list like you said it was, definitely move it to the top.
one day i WILL read tsh i promise!! unfortunately it cannot go to the top atm bc im working thru the books i already own 😔 love this review tho i honestly didn’t really know what the book was about & this actually sounds really good…

Ai Philosophers Thinkers of the New World
By Arjuwan Lakkdawala
Ink in the Internet
After writing had been established in the world - its origin going back to Mesopotamia (ancient Iraq) closely followed by Ancient Egypt and China, the records show Greek philosophers with overwhelming efforts trying to articulate into words mysteries of the natural world, reason and logic, concepts of what makes a good life, and of course questions about ethics and existence. In my research I found 9 Greek philosophers, to mention a few of them Pythagoras (notoriously famous for the Pythagoras Theorem).
Side Note: "Although the theorem has long been associated with Greek mathematician-philosopher Pythagoras (c. 570–500/490 BCE), it is actually far older. Four Babylonian tablets from circa 1900–1600 BCE indicate some knowledge of the theorem, with a very accurate calculation of the square root of 2."
Protagoras, Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. It is said that western thought is highly influenced by them. As history unfolded we know that many philosophers expressed their ideas, and presently we have an infinite maze of ideologies.
In a free world everyone believes what they want to believe, but if it is harmful to society, causes self harm, is illogical, then it should be illegal and wrong.
Up to now we were doing all the thinking, but presently there is an emerging new class of very different thinkers, and that is Artificial Intelligence, computer scientists are taking big data which is basically infinite and feeding it to Ai, and concepts from neuroscience is being used to develope more powerful computing like neuromorphic chips.
A study published in Neuron in 2022 explains "Bioneural Circuitry." In simple words, neurons use electricity to send signals so it is possible to merge them with electrical signals from artificial intelligence on electrodes. This could be similar to the technology used by Neuralink implants.
A very futuristic idea that occurred to me is what if a hypothetical Ai (Star-Sci) is used as a teacher from kindergarten to university graduation, with constant upgrade of information as the years go by. This teacher would teach and even give tests. An Ai model that teaches everything. Students would instead of naming universities or a string of teachers, be known only as pupils of a certain Ai. This is of course a very sci-fi idea, but in realistic terms as I see anarchy increasing in the world, and the cases of teachers behaving inappropriately with students, I think Ai teachers will be looked upon favourably pretty soon.
After thought: academics can contribute for free or paid to the Star-Sci life long teaching system. This could be a new style university, where students only interect with Ai, preventing any non-educational use of the institute or corruption from fellow students or teachers.
Tumblr media
We in this current age are going through the greatest social experiment. That is the Internet which is a merging of human mind with artificial intelligence. It is changing the world in ways we cannot predict as this hasn't happened before. We have no previous case studies.
Ai is reportedly often used in writing essays, I personally use search engines for my research. I avoid using Ai to do any of my writing, I don't want my mind to rely on artificial intelligence, because I believe it will corrode my much superior human intelligence.
I think artificial intelligence is good to use in the management of big data, but not in any paper with concepts within the ability of human calculation and comprehension.
Scientists are trying to come up with a unified theory of consciousness. According to research and most human experiences we have an outer sense in which we comprehend empirical evidance and what we immediately experience, and then we have an inner consciousness in which we think, form memories and plan ahead. The outer world is not really complicated, it's the inner world - thoughts that can warp into unknown manesfeststions, some of these neurological paths can lead to genuise and others to insanity.
This unknown manesfestations of consciousness is exactly what defines the difference between human thinking and Ai programming. Artificial intelligence cannot have thoughts at all. It can only compute programmed instructions based on the data it has. But with big data this programming could in the near future start to resemble consciousness. As we do not and mentally cannot compute big data, so the output of Ai from big data could seem to us like independent thoughts.
It is crucial to understand this about Ai as technology integrates it further in our lives and we interact with it increasingly.
At the same time we must avoid using it where we can use our human intelligence. This is of prime importance if we are to preserve the excellence of our cognitive abilities.
Neuroscience studies reveal that neural networks that are not used get lost. We don't really need scientific experiments to confirm this, as we can immediately tell when our memory improves, or we get better at any intellectual skill, well known that it only happens with practice, therefore if we rely on Ai it will result gradually in mental decline.
As we think our brains form complex neural networks that improve our intelligence regarding a study or concept.
Thoughts are different than feelings, we have often heard that the brain is logical and sensible while the heart isn't. Studies have confirmed that the heart has a neural network known as the intrinsic cardiac nervous system (ICNS). While this does not say that it is why we have feelings that could contradict our intelligence, it is an interesting hypothetical concept to explain how feelings and logical thoughts can be in conflict with each other.
Being irrational and illogical or hateful, and having several other destructive traits, that cause self harm, or harm to society, is unfortunately observed more often these days.
Mental health is a very complicated and difficult terrain to traverse, we are nothing without our consciousness. Our whole quality of life depends on the level of our intelligence and the health of our minds - this is maintained and achieved by a good upbringing, secure environment, healthy diet, and a rounded education with physical exercise.
There are foods that improve the health of our brains, and foods that increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease and dementia and have other negatives effects. Google for articles about brain health foods.

Thought to drop some behind the scenes on making Athena. My take on Pallas Athena's design was inspired by portrayals of her from ancient times and modern pop culture.
My original drawing at the top right was the footprint that started it all.
Her outfit was inspired by this digital creation of a surviving Athena statue. There have been studies of these statues that used to have color back then. Look it up, it's COOL and WORTH IT! Even her hair was inspired by the statues from back then. Her bangs are supposed to look like teardrops.
The colors on the Greek flag inspired her top.
I took animation lessons from a former Disney Animator back in the day, so I took inspiration from Disney's Hercules Athena with the character design, the long neck, a bit of her height pose, and her little owl, Noctua.
Noctua is inspired by the little owls (Athene Noctua) hailing from Europe. Because of that, I made her helmet look like an owl head.
For the pose with her owl, I discovered this image from an 80s classic, Clash of the Titans, a movie I plan to watch soon.
What got me back into Greek Mythology was watching Epic the Musical animatics like Warrior of the Mind. To @wolfythewitch and @gigizetz, I blame BOTH of you for wanting to draw my version of a tall owl lady! For those learning about Epic, please check it out and give @wolfythewitch and @gigizetzs' videos a watch.
I had to look up hand references because I struggled to finish her. The hand holding the spear was inspired by a screenshot of Jasmine's hands and another source I'll bring up next. The hand on the right with Noctua was inspired by a hand pose of Disney's Athena and a hand reference I found on Deviant Art by the Etherington Brothers. (Link below the list)
I recently discovered the Olympians Graphic Novels by George O'Connor. Athena from those books played a role in figuring out her design. Check out those books if you guys have the chance! Highly recommend them!
Stolas from Helluva Boss inspired Athena's facial features from her head shape, mouth, and eyes, which can glow if she wants them to.
Athena's armlet, arm plate armor, and the Aegis were inspired by Athena's design in the recent roleplaying musical video game Stray Gods. If you love musicals and crime-solving, I do recommend it.
That's it for now! If I forgot something, I'll do another reblog of sources. Also, those discovering this post and liking it, please like the original post. Thank You!

Chances are Earned
Word count: tba
Pairing: Itadori Yuuji x reader//strangers -> potential lovers
Rating: t/m (teen+/mature for violence maybe & old world godlike powers)
Tumblr media
when you lock eyes, this is one of the first scenes i think of...
Tumblr media
“What do you mean I can’t take the exam?! You know I was on special leave!”
“And I’m telling you, Mx. YN, Yaga did not inform me, so you aren’t able to retake it.”
At seventeen years of age, you were having a discussion with your teacher who, mind you, had been giving these make up exams for students where missions for exorcising curses had been granted. Just because you aren't on the front lines doesn't mean you're not truly fighting either. If anything, your work behind the scenes along with the other medics in the sorcerer community has anything to add, you were always talented. Ever since the night your older cousin told you what she and her friends fought over summer vacation that one time you were nine years old. That aside, you chose to follow her in her footsteps in order to do your part to ensure the safety of humans everywhere.
You sigh, thanking them for their time, and retreat back to the school medic wing. Your cousin, Shoko, is still filing something or other for another student and you explain your situation. She isn’t really paying any attention, you’re gone to fetch some waters. In the midst of all this, you peak into an empty classroom. It’s there you meet him. Him is one of your most respected and revered peers since he did eat an ancient relic: Sukuna’s finger.
You’re very nonchalant when you pass each other again during mid morning break. He talks playfully about his plans for the weekend with his classmates. Unlike me, I’d be stuck editing and re-reading some case files, deciphering if the victims were caused by curses or humans.
•Itadori, Yuuji: filed special case.•
You recall seeing the file Shoko babes you from reading from, however Gojo-sensei noticed in his passing of the exchange and conveniently emailed you a copy. Every report involving Yuuji came to you from Gojo all except the one he’s about to go on.
[[Four days later]]
“Medic! Shoko?!” Gojo is holding a slumped over Yuuji.
“She’s gone ho—! What happened sensei?!” You inquire.
Yuuji is barely breathing when he is laid down on the examination table.
“Call Shoko, get checked out by her. I’ll take care of him,” you say.
Gojo id about to protest, but he sees the cursed energy float around you like Hermès’ serpent staff. There is something odd about healers in the sorcerer communities. Those tied to the ancients seem to have stronger concentrations of one of their talents. For example: in voodoo there is legends of the Shadow Man; in Greek mythology, there is Hermes god of speed and healing; but there is one more old world god from a pantheon outside of your realm of knowledge. Gojo smirks when your fingers have that kind of kahjal black: Ra the Sun. You harness what you can to save the boy on the table and he breathes easier with you.
“Nnnhnn,” Yuuji groans as he starts coming to.
You sit on a chair next to him and take notes. It’s been a while since you’ve healed someone who isn’t yourself and you’re almost too scared to poke his cheek which now is gaining more color. Yuuji sits up suddenly and looks around the morgue before settling on you. He studies you, curious and ask, and for the first time in his mind, Sukuna is quiet.
“Hi,” your day as the light flickers above your head.
“You made him shut up,” Yuuji is cautious.
You hold up your hands in protest. “I’m sorry, I don’t mean to…? You were unconscious and it seemed like you were in pain a-and I’m really sorry.”
Standing to walk away to grab your things, partly embarrassed and partly because he seemed either happy or relieved (you couldn’t tell which). Itadori Yuuji, when he can, he learned tommaintain a sense of respect and accountability for those who heal people. He has seen so much death that perhaps now is a good time to actually… live; so he stops you with just one question:
“What’s your name?”
“…” you mumble it under your breath before his boyish smile encourages you to repeat it.
“Thank you,” is what he responds with.
It seems today was a good day for luck to have shown you favor.
Ever since that day, whenever there’s a mission to complete, Yuuji asks your cousin if you’re free the night or the whole day before. You’re not really dating nor are you letting your imagination get ahead of yourselves, but you do enjoy the company of his classmates as well. Nobara thinks you’re brilliant and Megumi recognizes the talent you have. You’ve spent your lunches with them in either a classroom or they stop by the medic wing. One time, the three of them walked in as you were studying the flowers died and nearly dead on the table and you tried your best to have them become lively again—the vibrancy holds true for a few seconds and the flowers wilt and turn to ash.
Sighing, you mumble, “not good.”
“Yuuji did bring canned coffee for you though,” Nobara says, noticing how her classmate seemed to have blush marks under his eyes.
Megumi looked between the can of coffee to Nobara’s mischievous face, to Sukuna’s vessel and finally on your face… he connected the dots as he stares at Nobara for dragging him to a supposed “lunch”-date.
“Oh c’mon, ‘gumi,” she whispers. “Ya gotta admit this is nice.”
Megumi grunts sort of reminding himself they’re all teenagers in a high school surrounded by the occult practices of exorcising curses.
“‘S good to feel a little normal, right?” is all the Fushiguro boy says.
It’s not until two months later you are pivoted against Nobara for a sparring match with Gojo-sensei as the instructor. Somehow there is even some things which should remain secret. Like now, how you read Nobara’s movements after only seeing her attack once and how you laugh saying you’re having fun as phantom serpents wrap around your arms when you swing a throwing tomahawk her way and slice her face. It’s a rough cut, but not deep enough to require stitches, but when Nobara counters, you seem to dodge certain nails of hers. You’re not one to be outmatched by a peer, yet you are forcing her to think outside the box in terms ending this. You glance over at her teacher who just nods to stop this.
“‘M sorry?” you ask after Nobara walks away exhausted because for once her solutions weren’t sticking.
“You did good as a sparring partner,” Gojo is pleasantly surprised. “Think you can square off against Megumi tomorrow?”
“I have to check with Shoko, but sure?”
“Good, now go on get cleaned up and go back to class,” he instructs. “I have to make a quick call.”
[[Summer 2005]]
The first time you’re going to be able to arrive at the shores of Okinawa is also the first time you’re cordially invited to hang out with Gojo and his students. Why you were signed off by Shoko and even Yaga to go. Gojo must have framed it as a team bonding experience in order for you to be included. What you didn’t know was what led to this: rumors around the campus was that one strawberry blond who would not stop talking and asking about you caused this invitation to happen.
Room arrangements were made and more often than not you do not break any habits that were synonymous for you to breathing. At the sunrise, you were found on the sandy shores across the safe house listening to the world around you. Everything was harmonized from within outward. Nobara seemed to wake earlier sometimes, she sees you and says nothing as she goes to text her classmate. The two switch places for a moment and before long, the sun light kisses your skin and a phantom sigil under your eyes glow a deep kahjal black. You do your Sun salutations prior to realizing you’re not alone.
“You can join me if you like to watch,” you call over your shoulder on the second day.
Itadori Yuuji, Sukuna’s vessel, special grade, does just that. He sits with you one morning on the shore; you brought two blankets and he comes dressed in his long pants and tanktop; you’re dressed similarly except you bring a coat with you. Together you’re both overlooking the skies between the space of dawn and first light; Sukuna remains silent for now, learning more about what his vessel seems to be attracting to. Both of you glance up at the fading of the night and you face the boy you brought back from the brink and finally truly sees you in all the glory associated with the sun.
“Don’t be scared of me, ok?” your voice is low and gravely like you needed a pot of tea with copious amounts of honey.
“You think I find you spooky?” he seems a bit playfully amused, but he pipes down when you give him a forlorn look.
“Many didn’t like what we can do,” you carry on, closing your eyes trying to drown out the screams of those in your last you couldn’t save and those who were angry you let their loved ones pass on.
His gives you a once over and hums before you continue to meditate. He follows your lead on the next breeze that dances across the seas ahead of you. Just beyond the horizon, the rays of the sun start to shine.
Strength comes in many forms, so when he sees the sigils appear, he makes an attempt to hold your face. Gently, whispering to you a word of thanks, causing your lips to curl into a grin.
There is beauty in giving another a chance. Chances are earned, you reason and for right now, this individual holding your face, is smirking flirtatiously at you. And before the mayhem in the future no one can really predict, both of you decide to give romance a chance.

Lore Olympus fans,
I heard Lore Olympus is ending soon! And Y'all may want more Greek mythos in modern day! I got yah!
I'm writing a book about the Greek theoi set in modern day Greece, except no civilization ever fell due to colonization, so things like Rome, modern Europe, or the modern Americas don't exist.
I introduce g_ds and spirits from other civilizations who also now live in a modern world with modern laws. You meet Jesus, Al-lat (Allah's g_ddess daughter from the indigenous Arabic religion), Allah, Ogun, Sosondowah, Gendewitha, White Buffalo Woman, Loki, Thor, Benten, Shiva, and others!
I discuss topics about Ancient Greece. I talk about pederasty, the sexism women faces, slavery, the shame men who were the bottom in a male relationship are made to feel, lesphobia.
I have spent years studying to write this book. I've been planning this book since middle school.
I don't water down the fact they are all related, I have the Greek theoi talk about the trauma of being written to sleep your parent. I don't make the Greek religion into a fairy tale. I recognize the Greeks worshiped their theoi as g_ds. I recognize that every deity you meet (either be a theoi, a g_d, a spirit, a force of nature, etc) is a higher being and that people worship them in their own ways.
See yah soon!

Genuinely the academia fic makes me want to read every poem you cited!! Oh my god. Obviously I looked up Staying Quiet and I had a moment of stunned silence and wonder that you specifically knew the poem and exactly where it would be at home. Insane. Also reminded me of other great academia AUs in that now I almost want to write my english lit end of semester essays, thank you for the motivation. Anyway I'm here and not in the AO3 comment section because in the author's note at the start you mentioned having planned out what the characters would be doing and since you were on point with what you showed I am so so curious what else you've got for this setting 👀 in any case thank you so much <3
up top, thank you so much!! amongst my friends, i am a known poetry heaux. i go to poetry readings and feel my feelings; my partner got me a necklace that's engraved with a buddy wakefield quote. i have one of his collections signed to me. i fucking Love poetry.
hieu minh nguyen is one of my personal favorites and something was pinging around in my skull being like "hey! listen! there's a poem from them that perfectly fits astarion!" it fell Perfectly into place, shout out to my adhd background thoughts that were So Sure that hieu minh nguyen's poem should be there.
i'm going to put the rest below the cut, because. i have A Lot of thoughts and feelings
let's start with what i directly used in all my visions converted to blurs:
wyll is a low-rung english professor at a state school when he Could be at an ivy league bc of his dad’s nepotism. but wyll doesn't want a position his dad gets him, obvi. i want wyll to want to be out of his father's shadow, damn it.
(ulder is dean of a business school at an ivy league in my mind. it just fits. as a person with an english/linguistics degree: ulder ravengard has hella business major energy.)
astarion has taken a year or four off from school at this point. i hinted at substance abuse being the main reason that it's taken him so long to graduate from the law program? when he was the same age as his classmates, i think he partied A Lot and ended up having to retake some classes during his undergrad. i think i landed on coke being his chosen vice? idk it's vague for a reason. he's trying to get his life back on track
wyll and gale share an office space.
now here's what i left on the cutting room floor:
astarion is Still older than wyll, but not by more than six years
mizora is head of the english department. wyll has to play nice bc he's waiting to defend his dissertation and she'll be on the panel. she uses this to push her work or responsibilities onto wyll
lae'zel is doing her doctorate in anthropology/paleoanthropology. she's researching ancient war strategies and how social norms impacted them.
minthara is lae'zel's advisor because they'd have a Great dynamic. she specializes in biological anthropology. she can ball park which century any given human skull comes from.
shadowheart is working on her doctorate of psychology and specifically writing her dissertation profiling the susceptibility of cult victims mixed with religious studies to compile information about modern worship
1000000000% there are rumors about shadowheart's personal experience with cults. people say she goes by shadowheart so the cult she escaped from can't find her. she's heard every joke in the book about midsommar. there's some frat boy in the greek row that swears up and down that she bit his buddy hard enough to draw blood when they hooked up.
halsin and jaheira do ecology and agriculture, respectively. environmental sciences people. they both have tenure. halsin runs an internship for wetland management in the summer. jaheira is like a leading expert in soil science.
jaheira told mizora she was a bitch during a whole university department head meeting once and that's why halsin's the department head now.
minsc is literally just a coach. he does not teach Any classes and hangs out with the university's mascot Constantly. he coaches rugby and crew in the summer, basketball in the winter.
gale is a double discipline professor for history and cultural anthropology. So Close to getting tenure. his rate my professor score is mid as hell bc students either love or hate him because boy does this man drone onnnnnnnnnn
he's been on like four different digs in egypt and will talk about them at length but does that thing of "my second time in cairo. wait.... no. it was my Third time in cairo."
i posted this on twitter, but here's the couch lore: the couch in their office is a hand me down from gale's apartment because tara scratched it to hell on the corner of the armrests + the reason why the couch doesn't have any throw pillows is because gale didn't want to be tempted to nap and he already has a terrible time maintaining a work life balance
karlach is in sports medicine. she coaches the track team and works with weightlifters that have olympic aspirations. she was good enough to go to the last summer games for weightlifting, but an accident with a treadmill that she doesn't like to talk about prevented her from going.
she still has beef with gortash because he was on the shortlist for open spot availability.
she's Convinced that he's on steroids

Btw I just want you to know that I am now also doing Hindi for the fun of it cause I want to learn a language and what other than Hindi (and I will probably continue to learn languages if I get bored I have a lot of free time) legit because galios is right I can’t read anything translated because it just ain’t the same
I HAVE STARTED SOMETHING TERRIFYING.
You guys are badass like I took French in high school and I still managed to get my dude's name wrong. All of you have my utmost respect.
BUT DAMN.
A bit of clarification-it's not that translations are untrustworthy if you don't do them yourself. For 99% of your purposes, a translation done by a professional translator will serve just fine. It's when you're analyzing the origins and intent of the text. Say for instance in the Odyssey-in the scene where Telemachus hangs the slave girls who had lain with (been raped by) Penelope's suitors. It was a big deal a few years back when classical studies professor Emily Wilson did her own translation and referred to them as girls. Because up until that point, most translations had referred to them as whores. The original Greek did not call them whores. They had plenty of words for whore, trust me, but the original text called them 'female people'. The men who did the translations over the years chose to dehumanize them and make their murder more palatable to the reader, even though that wasn't Homer's intention. (at least with that line in particular-it's been fourteen years since I had to read The Odyssey but I do remember a whole lot of 'what the fuck') That's where Wilson had to understand the original Greek, to see how the killings were originally handled and update her translation to more accurately reflect that.
Most of us are not going to be making careers out of analyzing foreign (or dead) language books. For Galois, it's important because Draxum wants him doing shit like examining ancient magic scrolls and working to create their new society, which would require an in-depth understanding of different people's cultures and laws. And it's partially a symbol of Draxum's distrust for the modern and Americanization. (humanization?) He views the current Hidden City government and much of its culture to be corrupted by exposure to humans, and plans to reference pre-migration sources when figuring out the best way to run his One World Government. (also it's good PR-Draxum wants people to like Gale)
All in all, learning a language for the fuck of it is great. I wholeheartedly support that. But for all the people who aren't doing that: translator notes are a thing! And they are your friend. You don't need to learn a whole new language to gain new insight on your favorite ancient novel, or the cool subtitled Bollywood movie you can't get out of your head.
But go ahead and do it anyway! Learning is like food for your brain, give that thing a feast. :)
