Been thinking about Oh My Goddess again recently and just… how much WEIRD stuff is in it.
So I made a list.
Bugs (of the computer variety) that look like rabbits with spider legs and are invisible
A ghost of a motorcycle that looks like a maid
A robot that looks like rolly-polly-ollie
A robot that looks like a human girl that was given sentience and hates the roly-poly robot (even though he loves her)
Spirits that look like Tolkien dwarves that make combustion engines work
An assortment of machine spirits
Temporal space whales
An Extra earth spirit who lives in a rat
A demon king gets put into a floppy disk
An assortment of goddesses named after Norse mythology who are all weirdos in one way or another
The Gate of Heaven is a little girl
A demon who is basically a lone Team Rocket
And is allergic to good luck charms
One of the characters gets drunk on cola and grants the wishes of everyone in town, including turning one of the side characters into a giant
A demon gets turned into a cat and curses himself to be female to retain his intelligence
All the motorcycles. Everyone in this town is obsessed with motorcycles
Goddesses have angels (fine) and they get them by swallowing a tiny “Angel egg” (about the size of a Cadbury mini egg)
Some of the ways the goddesses travel include: mirrors, (fine) hot water, (okay) TVs, (??) and camera lenses (???)
People constantly want the two main characters to bone and will go to great lengths to attempt to get them to do so.
A character his his libido Turned Off I can’t elaborate without spoilers
Main boys parents won’t tell anyone how they met unless they beat the father in a race
After an arc where one of the characters is split into good and evil halves (run of the mill) there is a skin of the evil half left behind.
The roly-poly robot then puts on the skin and goes around town doing good deeds
A “scientist” kidnaps the two robots to take apart and study because they can walk.
The robots do not obey the three laws of robotics, btw
A demon gives a character a castle and an “obedience barrier” so they can be better than the main goddess
The goddesses lose most of their power and our guy needs to make Moon rocks to give them a temporary patch
One of the goddesses can slap words (mostly insults) onto people’s faces as an attack
There’s a pair of angels named Cool Mint and Spear Mint

#ask#non mdzs#My health journey has been: Hernia -> acid reflux -> Vocal pain due to aforementioned reflux -> chest infection.#I'm terrified to know what's about to hit me next. Please let it be something kind. PLEASE.#The consequence of living with linguists is that you'll wake up with a wacked up voice -#suddenly you're sitting you down in front of a program called something like Praat having your shimmer and jitter levels calibrated.#They gave me a GRBAS of 33012. I have a fun thing called a pitch break where a whole octave just does not exist.#My vocal pain was bad enough I ended up seeing a speech pathologist and that whole experience was super neat!#I learnt a lot about voice - to be honest I might make a little comic on it after some more research. Fascinating stuff.#For example; your mental perception of our voice modulates the muscles of the vocal folds and larynx.#meaning that when you do have changes (inflammation = more mass = lower frequency)#your brain automatically attempts to correct it to what it 'should sound like'. Leading to a lot more vocal strain and damage!#And it gets really interesting for trans voice care as well - because the mental perception of one's voice isn't based on an existing sampl#So a good chunk of trans voice training is also done with the idea of finding one's voice and retraining the brain to accept it. Neat!#Parkinsonial Voice also has this perception to musculature link! The perception is that they are talking at a loud/normal volume#but the actual voice is quite breathy and weak. So vocal training works on practicing putting more effort into the voice#and retraining the brain to accept the 'loud' voice as 'normal'.#Isn't the human body fascinating?#Anyhow; Now I have vocal exercises and strategies to reduce strain and promote healing.#Which is a lot better than my previous strategy of yelling AAAH in my car until my 'voice smoothed out'.#You can imagine the horror on the speech path's face. I am an informed creature now.#I'm my own little lab rat now. I love learning and researching. Welcome to my tag lab. One thing I will say upon looking back at it and with the redraw is that I don't think it's a "lack of reaction" and just more of an emptiness. It's not that he doesn't care, but instead he feels a sort of emptiness or hollowness in what has happened. Because he failed to save someone who needed it, he failed to do the one thing he promised he would try to do. And while Tomura has done many bad things, there is still a disappointment and dissatisfaction in knowing that he couldn't do the one thing a hero, in his mind, should be able to do. Whether he saved his heart or not, Izuku himself may feel that being unable to physically get Tomura out of there - like he has done with his other saves - means he not only failed Tomura but himself as a hero
And meanwhile Tomura is smiling faintly. Something about Izuku's possible emptiness in his reaction and Tomura smiling all the way until his death. And though he's smiling, it feels sad as well. I wonder if there was some small part of him that really thought something could change. Or he's touched (idk if that's the word but maybe something similar to it) that Izuku at least tried to connect to him, unlike the rest of the heroes

#We've had our yearly secret santa gifts exchange at my dorm and I've been gifted the first volume of Beast 😭😭😭😭😭#I'm crying forever. This december marks three years since I've watched the first b/sd episode#and yet this is the first time I actually own a b/sd manga volume. Like I own it and I can read it whenever I want!!! How cool is that!!!!!#Like there's so many Akutagawa images in it!!!! It's insane!!!!!!!! AND IT'S BEAST AT THAT#I'm deeply moved because I never spoke about it to virtually anyone here (at my dorm)?#Like I suppose a bunch of people vaguely know I like anime but only a couple of close friends know I like. Like-like reading manga lol.#And the person who gifted it DEFINITELY didn't know I like anime in general much less b/sd specifically much less Beast in particular!!!!!#I'm 100% sure (they just arrived this year and we hadn't even had that much occasions to talk to each other).#Which means they went through the trouble of gathering intel from my close friends about what I like and actually follow through‚#seek for the specific manga in a comic store etc... It's such a nice gesture I'm so heartwarmed.#And of course I'm glad for every gift I've received in the last years (genuinely)‚ but the fact that this was the most *specific* to what–#I like. It makes it so special! They were so kind.#There must be one (1) person in this whole 60 people dorm who knows I like Beast–#(that would be the girl who introduced b/sd to me in the first place) and the fact that they asked them for it...#I feel both very grateful and lucky lol#When I unwrapped it!!! Like I thought it was just a random book which would have been nice but like!!!!!#When I actually saw through the thin paper the cover!!!! The scream I screamed in my head#Anyways!!!! I own a b/sd manga now!!!!! I've only got time to go through the first chapter so far but it's suchhhh an experience.#It's like reading it for the first time again 😭😭😭 Half because the translation is so much different than the English one lol.#And I basically know the English version by heart. Half because I never saw this kind of high quality!!!!! It's!!!!! Insane!!!!! Like!!!!!!#I'm crying 😭😭😭 The drawings are so sharp and crisp (in the good way). The lines are so clean there's no disturbance at all#I literally never saw anything so good in my life I'm crying a little. I'm so so glad they blessed me with Beast specifically#The takebon edition is pretty cheap (it's just planet manga so there's no color illustrations or dust cover or anything unfortunatelly.#But to make up for it the volumes are significantly cheaper then let's say J-Pop)#There's also some unique typesetting choices? The text from the book-like boxes is in lowercase which is interesting!#Initially I thought I wouldn't have liked the translation (opening it randomly there was Akutagawa saying “crepa!” (“die!”) to Dazai in ch1#Which was kinda jarring since it's very low register and everyone knows Akutagawa has very complex speech patterns.)#But actually reading it I'm really enjoying the translation so far!!!!#There's so many choices that made me grasp details I actually missed all the times I've read the English translation.#That is to say! Very excited to read it!!!! Will probably make a review / translation commentary if I can find the time!!!!!

idk sometimes seeing all the hate gege gets makes me sad. :( like I know alot of it is jokes/memes, but there are some people that are very serious and weird about it

baking never feels more like science to me than when i'm trying to cobble together an intricate multi step recipe together from several different recipes and tutorials online because the recipe I'm imagining doesn't exist....
#genuinely feels like a science experiment making something fancier than a frosted layer cake#have to do all kinds of volume and weight conversions because one recipe is japanese and the other is indian and the other is english lmfao#none of the recipes are probably the exact volume I need so i might have to make some minis with my extra stuff#i have to find a very precise sheet pan size tomorrow for the patterned cake i'm gonna use as the outer bit#otherwise i'll have to make my own from parchment paper??? or tin foil??? man idk.....#i had to write out all of my instructions and ingredient lists so i don't have to go between 6 different websites tomorrow/sat#i had to do research on fucking. gelatine 😭because it's impossible to find gelatine sheets here and they're used in EVERY mousse recipe#and there's apparently a huge debate on what the ACTUAL conversion of sheet gelatine to powdered gelatine is for baking#I also had to type up like an exact order to make each component because most need a significant amount of cooling time#grayson im gonna try my hardest to make you this fancy ass lemon cake and i pray i succeed this time where i failed on my own birthday#2 yrs ago but also i think this will go better bc i'm not doing a jelly insert or a candied mirror glaze#I'm also making my own candied lemons and lemon curd even though i don't have to#mostly because i wanna try doing it and the sheer power of getting to say i made the whole thing from scratch *#minus the actual cake mix because i don't have a good from scratch cake track record and box mixes are so so reliable#and i have too many moving parts to worry about finding a new cake recipe#every fucking cake recipe now is a fucking genoise sponge for SOME REASON#which is NOTORIOUSLY DIFFICULT AND A HUGE PAIN IN THE ASS BECAUSE IT USES NO RISING AGENTS#i want to throttle whoever it was that made online recipe people turn to only using variations of a genoise sponge for their cake recipes#honestly i need to maybe join the baking subreddit and ask for some good old baking/cookbooks with reliable baking recipes#ones that aren't crazy labor intensive for fucks sake i'm not a french patisserie#my stuff#it would be cool to one day have baked enough and have enough know how of how standard baking recipe components work#so i can just come up with my own recipes on my own#and just use whatever flavors i want#i feel like i would enjoy being a baker except if i had to make wedding cakes

Oh ok. I get now why a lot of people didn't vibe with the ending.
All and all: excellent manga, overall very good final act, too rushed final 2-3 chapters but weak and honestly mediocre epilogue, which makes the high of the ending kind of leave a bitter taste. I think Noda had a good steed and suddenly he had to finish and had to rush all. So the ending in the sense of the final arc was good but the ending proper (final couple chapters) + epilogue......... Not so much
#i liked rhe ending (though made the mistake to read comments so now I'm like 'yeah you are right that did not make sense' when on my own i#probably would not have noticed. but ok. I'll work my suspension of disbelief. HOWEVER the epilogue WAS indeed very lackluster#i get it's an epilogue but it was so rushed. we barely get a closure for ume and saichi and tanigaki did not get to#take asirpa back to uci as he should have (though he was instrumental for that). overall it was super rushed#like we did not even see how Sugimoto was rescued. the epilogue was faaaar too rushed tbh and also too vague in parts#siraishi not really saying goodbye.... also sugimoto and asirpa living together that's cute idc and i think the line into nastyness was not#crossed but oh boy is it a thin thread... i still choose to believe they are platonic soulmates lol but i want to see an official#translation of the volume that's all i say. what else... oh yes. the way the gold never got to actually be distributed doesn't sit right#with me at all but the worst part was definitely the sugimoto/ume thing oh god that was BAD#we did get to see osoma which was cute#OH AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON VASILY??? We didn't even see him. the epoligue for him in particular was great though but his ending was not#like he just hanged around ogata gor chapters and chapters on end and we don't even get a glimpse of him during the final showdown??#tbh i think noda wanted to do something more with him but realized he did not quite fit into the story and in the end got#caught up with all the main lines he did have to close and he obviously had planned and probably combined with his own exhaustion well#did not go nice for vasily! i also would have liked a more proper epilogue for tsukishima and koito. they deserved it#I don't like how pre-epilogue the tsukishima-tsurumi-koito tension seems to reach a breaking point only to kind of not get resolved because#they have to keep fighting lol.#laura reads#also i get the sentiment of the ending regarding the ainu and i think noda did his best but it seems like a rather soft thing for asirpa to#do like... sure. museums and stuff. i GET it but it goes a little too soft in the actual colonialism that went on from the japanese. i feel#noda starts off fairly critical of that but in the end softens his stance which is a shame but ok. the bar is in hell so this is actually#much better than average from what i can personally gather of my little knowledge#golden kamuy#gk spoilers

MUCH. of it flows exactly like blank verse. it kinda bothers me#i do dream about editing and publishing my own edition of behn's plays and i would definitely amend these to be verse#i wonder if montague summers' version is verse? idk this is the first janet todd edited play ive read#i dont yet know the differences between their editing styles#god i wish more than 2 ppl in history had ever bothered to edit and publish this woman's collected works#oxford world classics should definitely put out another volume of her plays#i love the one they have featuring the rover/feigned courtesans/lucky chance/emperor of the moon#but she's got what like 15 other extant plays? and oxford world classics has the range and capabilities to do it#or if penguin classics ever wants to pretend they're really as good as oxford they can print their own#as far as diversifying the canon and widening the availability of older texts. oxford still beats penguin any day#but it does piss me off that no classic book publishers take this period of early-modern women's drama and proto-novels very seriously#or rather. no big ones that i know other than oxford#im not counting print-on-demand companies that reprint the texts of public domain works w no editing#those serve a purpose but those are not leaders in the publishing industry for a reason. theyre not sposta be

Worst part of any manga rereading experience is the inevitable point where I run out of print copies and have to switch back over to digital
#so many of my hobbies are screen based so honestly reading physical manga and closing the phone for a while is kind of a relief#feels good on the eyes#but I'm rereading/catching up with witch hat rn in celebration of the abime trailer release#and I only own four volumes#so it's back to eyestrain land with me now#invasion of the frogs#I own a lot of manga but there's not actually a single series that I own 100% of#dgray is the closest but even that one gets spotty for me after 17

It didn't Quite fit all the way, but it's close enough. This shelf is composed of my three top favorite mangas of all time, which are Also the only 3 series that I own in totality. Specifically bc theyre my favorites & I care enough about them to want to own them all lol
It's... really really nice to see them all in one place like this.
And of course. The trigun ❤️ completely worth the money I spent on them.
#speculation nation#this is nowhere Near the full number of manga and books i own btw#i have. boxes and boxes just sitting in the closet.#but this is my only functional bookshelf. im a little limited.#so i only have the Favs here. at least for manga.#sometime i should go thru all my manga. ive forgotten how much i actually own.#maybe someday i can get some more bookshelves... ive been thinking about it.#for now. this will do.#it makes me so ridiculously happy to see trigun on the shelf. even with it being a bootleg print.#it's honestly pretty great quality for a bootleg. only printing problems i saw were a few of the internal covers were a bit out of order#everything in the volumes themselves were printed Wonderfully#of course dark horse translation so not perfect quality there. but ngl it's almost nostalgic to read that version for me.#that was my first trimax experience. & as much as i value what overhaul has been doing for us#a part of me will always be fond of dark horse's translation too.#and thus why i keep hold of my 'he is reason enough for me to fight' header. i enjoy it Very much.#man. i cant believe i got home 8 hours ago. and ive spent this whole time fucking around with my new manga#but ykno what it's good that it's bringing me so much joy#for how much i spent on it i damn Well better get some enjoyment out of it lmaoooo#but ive read thru them and i will almost Definitely be flipping thru them again in time#i enjoy physically holding manga. it lets me peruse so much more easily than trying to scroll and click thru pages#worth Every Penny........
