There's so many people in Qymaen's story that we get to see so little of--a story, a passing glance, an object hastily passed on before time swallows it whole. Is this how they are in Qymaen's mind too? Death, after all, takes too many far too soon on Kalee. How much does he remember of his father, besides hands, larger and rougher than his own easing his fingers onto the trigger an Outlander rifle? Of his mother--no, a mother is not spoken of; we cannot say for certain that was someone he knew. And then there is Outlander itself, left by a great-grandmother decades gone, who had used it to defend a Republic that did not care whether she lived or died. Did her story outlast her? Did it tell Qymaen, even before he was old enough to know politics and war, that those who ruled from the Core could not be trusted? Or did it too, ebb until all that remained was her weapon, and the fleeting sense, that whenever Qymaen raised it, there was someone there beside him, steadying him with scarred yet gentle hands, and whispering in his ear that he is greater than what the world makes of him.

OF THE WIND AND MOON - Mizuki and his sister Kazane @kazenii are looking for their father Lord Sesshomaru after the events of Inuyasha: Final Act and Naraku killed their mother. Travelling together across many lands until they finally , find their way to his side. Before his sister ,  Mizuki was alone for the first few years of his life. Now that he’s found her , he’ll never let go of her hand.

MAY THE WIND BRING YOU LOVE - A plotted modern verse with @puppet-slayer , @amethyst-noroi and @slayerled in which Mizuki is the sole son of Lord Sesshomaru Daiyosuke and the late Lady Kagura Fujin. Since his mother’s death , Mizuki’s relationship with his father became a bit more distant and cold. There was an incident , attending private school in which his relationship with another boy was discovered and he brought “great shame” to his grandmother. Transferring to public school for the remainder of his high school years, he met a boy in his class named Kohaku Yurino that he became friends with. Kohaku always saw he would miss a bit of school occasionally for work but didn’t really get to know Mizuki until their final year together. Seeing the boy waiting in the rain for his driver outside a convenience store he waited with him and offered him his umbrella. Mizuki thanked him with a ride back home and Kohaku asked him suddenly if he would like to move in with him. Mizuki smiled and said yes and they moved in together just before graduation. While they both went to school and worked, it became more apparent to them both over time that they had feelings for one another and eventually confessed and started dating. Much later down the line, they eventually married and adopted a daughter together. Mizuki became a fashion designer and painter. Kohaku a photographer. Mizuki became best friends with his roommate and later boyfriend’s sister sango and later realized the yoga classes he took were that of her boyfriend, Miroku’s.

HEADCANONS. As stated previously this blog is canon divergent and headcanon based original character.  Most of them will be based around my interpretation of Mizuki’s character. 

FACECLAIM. My icons and edits are from the online manga series Your Smile is Trap on webtoon. The only thing I have done is add Sesshomaru’s marks to Mizuki’s face. None of the source material is mine and please go read the series and support the artist.

boy it sure has been An Weekend

Apparently the ceiling in my grandparents’ living room collapsed NOT 3 MINUTES AFTER MY GRANDMOTHER LEFT THE ROOM so they got that fixed and are replacing the ceiling most of the other rooms too jic so we had to get the furniture out of there ASAP so it could get worked on and uh. I guess we’re keeping it bc they want to get rid of as much stuff as they can while they’re still around.

So now we have their dining set + the china which “goes to the next grandkid who gets married *COUGH COUGH WINK WINK DIRECTED AT ME*” like. Ma’am, I Have Never Dated Once In My Whole Life

And I mean I know she means well and just wants me to be happy but if I ever do get married it probably won’t be for quite some time and like. odds are it won’t be to someone she’d approve of, lmao.

Anyway she was like “any a y’all want the curio cabinet?” and I’d semi-jokingly asked about it on the way up so I was like 👀 but we didn’t really have the resources to haul all that glass and mirrors; we barely fit everything we did take

Also she decided it was finally time to let go of her car which. is kind of a Big Deal for her. It’s going to be brother #3′s, technically, but since he can’t drive I’m mostly the one that’s gonna use it for the moment (and the one who had to drive it back home, lol)

And she sent me an email that’s like “hope you’re not mad I gave it to brother #3 but I’ll buy you a display case for up to $500 as a graduation present (? at least it was kind of implied it was gonna be a graduation present but obviously it’s a bit soon for that) and now that we know you’re gonna be home I’m gonna send you $100 a month because I missed doing that”

Like Thank You Extremely Much but uh. shouldn’t that go towards roof stuff. I mean I guess she knows her financial situation better than I do but while I obviously like her doting on us I do still feel kinda bad. It’ll cover my meds each month with about $25 left over to throw in savings which I mean ain’t a lot but since I don’t really have the time to focus on survey sites like I usually do it’ll be nice to not have to worry about dipping into my hysto/car savings to get things. I guess technically the copays go towards my out of pocket costs so basically I’m getting both the meds and lowering the most I’d have to pay for the hysto but ANYWAY

Having the car would’ve been nice but frankly it’s smaller than what I want and also I kinda wanna go electric so by all means, let brother #3 have it. as long as we have two vehicles atm it’s fine. It’s all paid off, has less than 50,000 miles despite being about 10 years old, has much better mpg than probably anything I’ve ever driven, and has been super well maintained so it’s a hell of a lot better than my first car, lol. I’m happy for him and also like it was his birthday on Friday so

Anyway if the budget’s $500 then I’m gonna probably look into getting a bunch of Detolfs and hacking them together and raising them so I have some storage and the lowest shelf will then not actually be on the same level as the floor, lmao. My dad suggested I wait until Xmas to get it which is fine by me, it gives me time to think about it and figure out what the hell I’m gonna do with the bookshelves they’ll replace bc I have absolutely Zero space for anything atm

They always give us money when we visit so I got $150 this time around and quite frankly I think I might look into putting that towards a new phone; mine’s got some relatively minor issues but they’re adding up and it’s getting rather annoying

BUT THEN we got a call from brother #1 who fractured his arm and is needing to get surgery so that’s happening like. tomorrow. and he’ll probably be coming back to live with us again which is. hm. Obviously he ain’t getting access to any of the vehicles but it’s just kind of A Lot going on at once. EDIT: ok he is ah. Not coming back home which I mean. is less stressful in many ways but he’s not really doing great so hhhhhh. it’s a Mess.

So let’s just say I’m super grateful this Wednesday is the one break day we get bc Good Grief do I need some time off from school. I only have one Thursday class w/nothing on Friday anyway and this last essay I need to write is due Tuesday so I’ll be DONE and can actually relax. or at least not have to worry about that on top of family drama

⌠ BEN BARNES, 36, CISMALE, HE/HIM ⌡ welcome back to gallagher academy, SAMUEL GARREAU ! originally hailing from BLACKTHORNE, this alum specializes in THREAT ELIMINATION. when i see them walking around in the halls, i usually see a flash of ( complacent smirks paired with attentive eyes; the aroma of expensive, but fresh cologne; the decision to just “wing it”; a cigarette between lips ).  it’s the ( leo )’s birthday on 08/14/1983, and when they were still in school their most requested dish was BOUILLABAISSE from the school’s chefs. hopefully their presence can help ease the minds of gallagher students.

𝙷𝙸𝚂 𝙱𝙰𝙲𝙺𝚂𝚃𝙾𝚁𝚈.

in the late 1970s-80s, there were a string of infamous art robberies and trafficking occurring around france, which linked to notorious art thieves from both france and america. french-american cia agent matthieu garreau was assigned to assist the central directorate of the judicial police and the dgse in their investigation. french art curator adeyln legrand ( her fam is Old Money rich bc they own museums across the country ) was involved in the case as well, helping the agencies identify the stolen art pieces and their worth. as soon as matthieu laid eyes on her, it was love at first sight !

samuel elias garreau was born in paris, france — just before matthieu was sent back to washington d.c. he was raised by his mother and maternal grandparents ( who lived in marseille ) for most of his childhood. his childhood was filled with love, art, linguistics & french cuisine. he became a polyglot at a very young age, knowing how to speak french, english and spanish fluently. his father visited his wife and son as much as he could in france, but eventually, the two moved to washington d.c. when samuel was 10-years-old. 

a bit of context on the garreau family: the garreau family name has been involved in espionage for a VERY long time. lineages stem back to being loyal spies for the french monarchy for many generations before the surviving garreaus immigrated to america to escape WWII. many relatives eventually returned to france, but samuel’s paternal great-grandparents decided to continue to raise their children in the united states & establish connections with american intelligence agencies. 

immediately, matthieu wanted to begin espionage training ( already samuel was a couple years behind in hand-to-hand combat / weaponry training, so he’s eager ). adelyn was a bit Conflicted but ... lil’ energetic, happy-go-lucky samuel was ECSTATIC !! what better way to bond with your father, am i right ??

those 4 years before spy prep high school was full of father-son bonding, grueling combat training, & survival skill training. but, samuel was also a normal, private elementary / middle school student in washington d.c. it was a lot of pressure — juggling school, his blossoming social life, and keeping the whole “ i’m training to become a spy ” thing a secret bc sam CANNOT stop talking

before samuel busted at the seams, he was sent off to a prestigious spy prep school on the east coast to truly hone his skills and begin to identify what he may excel at as a spy; however, sam didn’t take it seriously ... like at ALL. it was mostly because he was so bored — he needed something stimulating / challenging. often samuel was being a Sneaky jerk, pulling pranks & being a kleptomaniac; however, his grades showed the opposite of his delinquent behavior. he was excelling in all of his classes.

the garreaus did not know what to do with samuel. literally, they had a whole damn family meeting about where he’s headed in his spy career bc there’s NO WAY any spy university would be willing to take him. the plan would be to utilize their connections in france and get him enrolled in an academy there until ...

blackthorne academy showed up outta nowhere and was like “ hey, we’ll whip his ass into shape. give him to us. ” the garreaus were reluctant due to the academy’s reputation and suspicious as to HOW blackthorne caught wind of their samuel; however, maybe this is what he needed. the most against this was his mother, but her voice held no authority. 

samuel was in for a RUDE awakening at blackthorne. maybe it was for the better ? he majored in THREAT ELIMINATION + LINGUISTICS, CULTURE, & ASSIMILATION ( whatever was blackthorne’s version of those were ). 

his first year there practically BROKE him, but by his sophomore year, his flaws became refined skills. somehow, his extrovert / devil-may-care and shrewd personality still shined amongst his callous and/or sadistic peers. 

the codename HERMES seemed to be used by his instructors sometimes to “ make fun ” of samuel, the label representing his ability to outwit his peers, mischievous and intrepid nature, proficient adaptability, and most importantly, he mastered the art of infiltration & extraction — just as the god of thieves would ( the ONLY time he’s the quietest compared to his peers tbh ) u know ... also stole lives too ... i know that’s cheesy SHHH

of course ... we all know the whole deal about blackthorne. he was molded into the perfect assassin, not a sophisticated spy that could have a drink with james bond or ... with his prestigious, royal spy family. 

throughout his many years of fieldwork across the globe, samuel was many things for both private clients and espionage / government agencies ( mostly doing a lot of infiltration / extraction & surveillance undercover missions ), even sometimes an actual thief for the right price. 

however, despite samuel’s slight identity crisis, he earned quite the name for himself in the espionage world and solidified himself as a reliable secret agent. but he’s still a pain in the butt :-P

during blackthorne’s last years, samuel often was asked to come by as a guest instructor, a desperate attempt to liven things back up to relive its better days. despite the absolute DEMONS his students were being, it surprised him that he actually enjoyed teaching. 

so, he was a bit shocked ( and ecstatic ) to hear that gallagher requested HIM out of the many blackthorne alumni to be a part of the faculty, let alone the threat elimination instructor. who would be a better teacher to teach future spy how to take down an assassin than an ACTUAL assassin ( and one who made quite a Reputation at blackthorne for outsmarting his upperclassmen and instructors ) ?

𝙷𝙸𝚂 𝙿𝙴𝚁𝚂𝙾𝙽𝙰𝙻𝙸𝚃𝚈.

tbh, samuel is the epitome of ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 

he lives for the adrenaline rush; he will go out of his way and even risk his life sometimes to make missions more exciting ... but obviously, with a little planning beforehand to make sure missions are completed successfully

sam surprisingly is cooperative ( even if he really wants to do the opposite, he’d listen unless his quick-wit is essential for the situation ). his many years of experiences have made him realize how important intel and medical agents are to missions. he has a lot of respect for his fellow agents and students who aren’t concentrating their studies in the more physical combative majors

samuel likes being a nuisance. he’s quite devious and gets away with it a lot LMAO

he’s such a thespian it’s Unreal ... he’s so dramatic. but, this makes him excel at undercover missions bc this man enjoys acting way too much

samuel LOVES his students and it really cracks him up because if blackthorne student sam heard he’d be a mentor in the future, he’d laugh in your face

he still has the slightest french accent when he speaks, mostly to latch on to a remaining attachment he has to his mother and previous “ normal life ”

an excellent cook ... obviously he enjoys cooking french cuisine the most 

he also is an avid art enthusiast and also loves fashion and architecture. he spends the majority of his salary on designer clothes and art pieces

if the faculty have to become normal professors, samuel is definitely up for teaching anything world history related !!

randomly knows a lot of natural history trivia thanks to his maternal grandmother, who was a botanist

the languages samuel currently knows is: french, english, spanish, italian, russian, german, arabic, japanese, and chinese ( mandarin & cantonese )

Time to talk about my year and some people I’ve met / Been around a lot in 2018.

Alright, So I started 2018 off in the South park fandom, as I did in 2017 as well. It was fine until Drama started rolling in and I started openly talking about my problems. I got ignored a lot and Had to have some of my actual BFF’s calm me down at times. It had been a shitty few months in this year, Most of the people I use to talk to stopped talking to me, Blocked me or have deactivated and lost contact with. But There’s good some good memories in there, I met a few people I called my family and I love them dearly, I met my lovely girlfriend...and Ex girlfriend this year as well. 

School sucked, I moved a lot and well I still don’t have any real life friends besides my cousin and best friend who I rarely see because She’s gone off to CEGEP / University ATM. I got bullied again and got called names a lot, I’ve gotten comments about my looks and my problems and How I always looked so depressed and down all the time. I guess that was because I was having a shitty time...I mean, I had been moving around a lot, I moved schools 4-5 times in the past 2 years and honestly I was just getting tired of being stabbed in the back by people. So This was the year I started cutting myself, Crying myself to sleep, being more quiet about being sad and triggers started affecting me even more then they use to. My family was being a bitch, My mother was making me her slave while she was on crutches, my dad and I fought, I wanted to move in with my grandmother, I wanted to run away a few times as well. 

Good things that came out of this year actually was I started learning a lot about myself, Like Gender issues and Sexuality. I learned that I really liked girls A LOT. I figured out my art style and kept developing on it. I joined a fandom I was accepted in, Made some really great and beautiful people and Got myself a lovely girlfriend that I love so much. I moved back to my old down as well. I’m going to be graduating this year as well...So yeah.

part i: setting

i’m so bad at establishing settings. by far my least favourite part of world building (if you have suggestions, i’d love to hear ‘em!). but to give you a sense of the vibe we’re going for, let’s say that globally, huge swaths of land are just uninhabitable now. places devastated by droughts, intense flooding, infertile land, nuclear waste and radiation etc etc. this has given rise to mega cities, places so crowded that people in the lower districts regularly get trampled among the rush of people going about their day. let’s say something like… 75% of humanity is spread between ten cities across three continents. it’s rough, but the other choice is to try and venture out into the sprawling wilderness. of course there’s a lot of social/structural issues that come with cramming so many people into such a limited space, and that’s partly what has given rise to the rigid social hierarchy the world is seeing

for an idea of what the cities look like (at least among the upper class where the story takes place/the environment yuzuru grew up in), think eco-based designs. built to try to mitigate the damage of decades of harmful environmental practices. but also things like artificial beaches, synthetic meats, imported sand that has to be sanitized before it can be used. towering buildings, standing miles above the filth and fog of the polluted, overpopulated streets below. something like this: https://pin.it/6vs3PVf

it’s the idea of ‘build up and out’ but taken to the extreme. technology is pretty much the only thing that ‘survived’ what yuzuru’s great grandparents call ‘The Great Collapse’ — it has progressed rapidly, but is still constrained because again. resources are an issue. precious minerals like cobalt and copper are even harder to mine now than ever before. and the lab-made alternatives aren’t as good. of course, if you’re wealthy, this is less of a problem. also the regulations on some of this tech is terrible. things like people using technology to steal identities or impersonate people is very common (keep this in mind for later)

absolutely adore the whole concept. it’s amazing. love the idea of these ecobuildings.

the tower, i find SO ugly I’m not going to lie fldkffj but it makes so much sense!!!! démesure. the pristine white, clean cut and technologically advanced aesthetic is flawless.

I can see the actual view outside being on the top of the clouds. the immensity of the sky unrolling in front of you as you sip champagne. the ugly parts of the city conveniently covered by this vastness of white, soft, pure clouds. it’s always sunny up here:))))

and the concept of family towers as a whole could also be incredible bc here me out. towers so high above the sky. highly guarded. family feuds. it’s actually MEDIEVAL! the towers are the new CASTLES and it’s kdkfjf. amazing.

I could see the inside looking a little like this??? a mix of technology (the views are holographic) and nature (ecosystems on each floor? the air is filtered and all)

like imagine the Hanyus holding their business meetings and transactions in these kinds of rooms??? marriage contracts being discussed and signed in this kind of atmosphere?

also I adore the idea of the Fernandezes building this summer house for the grandma away from the city center because hear me out. taking the train/the plane to get there. the view of the wasteland that is this world rolling by the window as they watch, bored, unimpressed, and as they just go from one utopian domed estate to the other. they stand well protected by their super technological means of transportation, they don’t even have to smell the air to get there. absolutely depressing. could be a good way to I introduce what the outside world looks like!!!! (also I’ve got this idea, correct me if I’m wrong — it could be that the Fernandez that took over the industry of the feuding auto-destroyed families left behind is Javi’s grandfather, maybe? That way it goes back a little, and javi and Laura are the actual first ones of their family to be born and raised rich. Their parents are the middle generation, they got the hardship of the transition. And that way it could be Javi’s grandma has tales from the real world she grew up in. she loves not starving of course but hates the ethics of the new world of billionaires she got sucked in. she wants away from it. her lungs are bad cause she grew up in the poor world, and that’s why she rests in this country house, unhinged abuela that always says what she thinks, and who javi (and eventually yuzu) adores.)

Never Buy Cheap Computers on Craigslist by 2017Interloper

Ever notice the little lightbulb icon at the top of the MS Word screen, to the far right of all the options like File, Home, View, etc.? Well, I don’t know about yours, but mine isn’t working properly. It showed me something I didn’t want to see, and I may have used it to kill my girlfriend.

I just got a new laptop. For a broke ass grad student, finding a customized Lenovo ThinkPad b66 with 32G Ram and all the other awesome specs it comes with, WITH WINDOWS 7 INSTALLED (Huge selling point for me) for $300 was unreal. I use my laptop for gaming, streaming, work, school, you name it. I had to go check it out. I didn’t realize the b66 was a Lenovo model, but reading the tech specs on the Craigslist ad gave me a nerd boner for the ages.

The older lady who answered the phone number listed on the craigslist ad was really nice, and said it had belonged to her grandson. “He is gone now,” she told me. “I have no use for the thing. Is three hundred too much? It looks like a nice computer, at least, to me.” I could have been a total dick, and talked her down to 200. I am sure of it. But, I would have felt bad about it, and I happened to have the cash. Granted, it was all I had, but I had gas in the car, coffee, and my girlfriend and I had some things in the pantry that could pass as food, so we’d be ok for a few days. I noticed that the lady didn’t specify what ‘gone’ meant in reference to her grandson, whether he had died, moved away or what have you, and thought it a bit odd that she had mentioned it. Hey, maybe she was just a lonely old lady and I was the first person she had spoken to in a few days, right? I told her I was sorry about her grandson, went and cleaned out my bank account at the nearest ATM and sat in my car at the Evergreen Town Park where we had agreed to meet, waiting for her to show up.

I had to call my girlfriend, Alex. She and I had been talking about getting a new laptop for a while now; the one we currently shared was getting a little long in tooth. There was one we were looking at that was decent and in our price range, but I was resistant to spending any money on it, because they all come with Windows 10 now, and I freaking hate Windows 10. We settled on looking at used ones, and figured it would be cheaper that way anyway.

“Hey!” She answered. “Good timing. You just got me on my break. What’s up?”

“Well, I drained my bank account, but you are never going to guess what I just found for three hundred bucks!”

At first, she was weary about the cost but when I told her about the operating system and had her google the specs on the thing, all she could say was “damn.”

I saw the lady I was waiting for, at least, I figured it was her. She was driving a green Buick, and craning her neck, likely looking around for me and my car as I described it on the phone. She was probably feeling the slight anxiety that most people get when meeting someone from Craigslist, that ‘what if I just gave my car’s description to some serial killer’ feeling. I figured I’d not keep her waiting on me, and I was psyched about the computer. “Babe, I gotta run. I don’t want to be all rude and make this old lady wait. Love You.”

“Love You. Good find. Can’t wait to check it out.” We hung up and I got out of the car and waived at the lady in the Buick.

She rolled down her window halfway. “Are you Colin? The young man I spoke to earlier?” She asked, a little hesitantly.

“Yes ma’am, thank you for meeting me. My girlfriend and I have been looking for a good computer for a while now,” I told her, trying to small talk a little to make her feel at ease. I got the impression she was nervous or uncomfortable. Craigslist ads get a lot of bad publicity. For all the scams and bullshit that undoubtedly originate with Craigslist ads, most times when you buy secondhand things, rent an apartment or adopt a pet go without a hitch. But, those aren’t ever the ones you hear about. Plus, I’m a dude, so I don’t worry about that stuff as much as Alex does and I imagine other women might. I mean, it’s not like a bigger dude couldn’t lure me out to a dark alley and jump me or whatever, I guess it’s just not my nature to worry about things like that. If it happens, I’ll deal with it when the time comes. Then, I just wanted to make the old lady feel at ease, because she was doing Alex and me a huge favor with this cheap laptop.

She seemed a little uneasy still, but she stepped out of the car, and we walked over to the bench. She took the laptop out of the case and handed it to me. “Go on ahead and fire it up,” she said. “You can take a look and make sure it has everything it is supposed to have, and no viruses or bugs or whatever it is that steals all your information.” She smiled. “Forgive me, I don’t know much about these things. I had my daughter type out all of the information on that computer ad you found my number on. She showed me how to use Facebook on my phone, and that’s about as far as I go with this sort of thing.”

The laptop booted right up, appeared to have all the usual bells and whistles, had a full version of Microsoft Office on it (I would remember to switch the subscription to my name later) and a surface inspection of it looked fine. I told the lady as much. “It looks fantastic to me. I believe I owe you a few dollars?” I produced six fifty-dollar bills from my wallet and handed them to her, trying to be discreet. I’d rather have a casual onlooker think it was a drug deal than jump her because they saw me handing her cash.

She still looked a little uneasy as she stuck the bills in her wallet. “Thank you,” she said.

“Ma’am?” I asked, hoping that she hadn’t realized that she was practically giving the computer away. “Is everything all right?”

She sighed, barely audible. “Yes, thank you.” We got up and walked toward the parking lot. “I just…” She paused, looking as if she were trying to decide whether or not to tell me something. “My grandson… he was on the computer a lot. I can’t say for sure what got to him at the end, but… I don’t know. Just be careful,” she said warily. With that, she got back into the Buick and left.

I sat there holding my new computer and feeling kind of weird. I mean, what had happened to the kid? Had he gone into a chatroom and met some kind of creepy pedophile? Disappeared? Suicide? It really was nothing but idle curiosity and I supposed it didn’t matter anyway, but it gave me the creeps. I shook it off and drove home.

I took the computer into the apartment I shared with Alex, and set it down on the small, round kitchen table we had. It was getting dark, so it was probably around 6:00, and I was hungry. I figured Alex would grab a bite on her way home. She didn’t get off work until 10:30, and I wasn’t a great cook, nor did I feel like making pasta or a sandwich, which were currently my options. I grabbed the take-out box of last night’s Chinese and put it in the microwave. While my crappy takeout dinner reheated, I unzipped the bag the laptop was in and fired it up. There was a wireless mouse, a wall plugs, and a manufacturer’s CD-ROM that came with the computer neatly tucked into the bag with the laptop.

I shuddered a little seeing the dead boy’s name pop up with a little icon of a soccer ball. I was going to click “guest,” but I told myself I needed to access the admin account on the computer to create my own profile, run some anti malware and antivirus BS and all that. If I were being honest with myself, I wanted to snoop a little, because the lady’s comments were kind of weird. I pulled up Google, and just as I suspected, the kid’s account was still logged in. The microwave startled me when it let me know that my food was done with a pretentious little ‘ding!’ I got up and got my food and a fork, realizing that I felt guilty, like a kid with his hand in the cookie jar, thinking in that brief second that I may have been discovered snooping through a dead kid’s computer.

No. MY computer, I mentally corrected myself. I purchased it, and the previous owner just had something unfortunate happen to him. It wasn’t the computer. And it isn’t snooping, because it is my computer, and I would like to know if the kid had visited any websites or received any sketch emails that I should worry about stealing my credit cards and internet porn search history or anything like that. Right?

Right. And so, with that justification in mind, even though I wasn’t actually concerned about any of that, I went about my snooping. I was curious, and felt kind of guilty and a little spooked. There is something that feels intrinsically wrong about snooping through a dead person’s files, especially a dead kid. Maybe he hadn’t died, but I had the feeling he did, from the way his grandmother had warned me. My mind kicked into justification mode again and told me it was no different than wandering around an estate sale after someone died, and Alex brought me to those all the time. Truth be told, they creeped me out a little, too, but it’s just what people did. Best not to think about it.

Over the next few hours, I found very little, if any, surprising or suspicious activity on the computer. The kid mostly hung out in chat rooms, played WoW, had a reddit account, and had spent a lot of time on YouTube. Nothing that looked like it would be installing malware. (And, I thought, nothing to indicate the kid was suicidal or into anything weird). Somehow it felt like ghosts should have come flying out of the screen or something. None did, and I decided that none of it was my business anyway. I selected anything I found in documents, music, pictures, or on the desktop and each time hit shift+delete, so it would bypass the recycle bin and I would not be tempted to snoop. Snooping like that is sort of a rabbit hole, and one thing my mother always said when we would house sit for the neighbors or found ourselves in anyone else’s home when they weren’t home rung true with me here: ‘if you go looking for trouble, you’ll find it. Doesn’t enough trouble find us on its own?’ That was her ‘don’t snoop through shit that isn’t yours’ spiel, and she was probably right. Time to make it my own.

I wiped the signed-in account on the browser. I went in to the ‘users’ screen and created my own as an Admin, and I made sure any programs I would need to use were installed in a way that any user could access them. I signed in as me, and deleted the poor, dead kid’s account. I opened up Word, intending to sign in to my own “Office 365” Account, so the lady didn’t get charged or anything, and I went to the top of the screen for the “sign in” option.

It wasn’t there. Huh, weird, I thought. Could this have been one of those older copies of Microsoft you bought on a disc and didn’t have to pay a subscription fee for? Score again! I thought they had stopped making those. It looked pretty new, though. Weird. The front door opened, and I heard, “Hellooooo!” in Alex’s sing-songy voice.

“Hey babe.” She came in and kissed my cheek.

“So, you gonna show me this new hotshot computer of ours?”

I raised an eyebrow. “Okay, yours.”

“You can use it sometimes,” I teased. She shoved my shoulder playfully.

As I suspected, she had grabbed something from Zaxby’s on the way home. I grabbed one of the fries in her meal and savored it. Zaxby’s coats their fries in seasoned salt, and they’re freaking delicious. She slapped my hand away and whined, “Hey! I haven’t eaten since noon. Back off!” She turned away from me. “Hey…” She grabbed the wireless mouse and moved it to the top of the screen. Microsoft Word was still open.

“This a bootleg or something?” She was hovering the mouse over the top part of the ribbon, where it says ‘Home, Design, Review’ and the like. Next to those options was a little lightbulb that said “TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT TO DO” and it was blinking red.

“I don’t know, but I tried to sign in to our account, and there is no place to do that,” I told her. “What makes you say that?”

She ate another fry and thought about it. “I don’t know, it just looks different. Maybe the blinking red ‘Help’ thing?” She sat down and moved the laptop in front of her. “May I?”

“Sure.” I gestured for her to have at it. My girlfriend currently works in retail, at a department store, and a lot of people mistakenly assume that retail jobs don’t have any use for tech skills. As the Assistant Manager of her department, she used these Microsoft programs as much or more than I did.

“I can’t get over the blinking ‘TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT TO DO’ thing,” she said. “It’s weirding me out.” She clicked it and it stopped blinking.

She typed, ‘I want to get a raise at work’ and hit enter. “Let’s see what a discounted two-thousand-dollar computer with a bootleg copy of Word can do for me,” she joked.

The screen sat there loading for a minute before a pop-up appeared on the screen.

No Registered User Found. Would you like to register, Alex McCabe? (Yes, No)

“What the fuck?!” She said, scooting her chair away from the table. She looked at me.

I should have been scared, felt defensive, or been worried, but I was fascinated. “How…?”

“You should uninstall that,” she said. “It’s probably some kind of black market copy that steals your…. I don’t know.” She walked over and clicked No. The screen reverted to its usual, mostly normal format, except the red blinking message: TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. “I am getting in the shower.”

As soon as I heard the bedroom door shut, I immediately began typing into the red blinking area on top of the MS word screen. ‘Tell me how you knew my girlfriend’s name.’

Loading again. Error message.

‘No registered user found. Would you like to register, Colin Davies? (Y/N)’

I clicked yes. Should I have been a little more concerned that it knew the difference between me and my girlfriend? Absolutely. But I was oddly transfixed by it, and for some reason, it didn’t seem odd at the time. Maybe I was just careless, and maybe it was something else that made me click Yes; I can’t be sure now. Hindsight is always 20/20, right?

‘THANK YOU, COLIN. YOU ARE NOW THE REGISTERED USER. PLEASE CAREFULLY READ THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS AND END USER LICENSING AGREEMENT, THEN TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT TO DO.’

Does anyone ever read the terms and conditions? I didn’t. I typed again, ‘I want to know how you knew our names.’

Okay, well, good parlor trick, Microsoft. Our Wi-Fi/Cable provider billed us on a joint account, so I figured it was pulling our names from the ISP. Great privacy policy, Comcast. I rolled my eyes and typed, ‘I want to see Alex get a raise at work tomorrow’ and hit enter.

“We’ll see.” I chuckled to myself and closed the lid. I figured I’d join Alex in the shower. And I did. As we were drying off, I told her how I’d registered the software in my own name, and that I told it to get her a raise.

She said, “You erased that creepy bootleg and just downloaded the regular one, right?”

“Of course.” The lie was on my lips before I had time to consider it. In hindsight, that too was odd, because Alex and I had a policy of absolute honesty. The kind of honesty that I wouldn’t recommend for most couples. She had been cheated on in the past, and I had a roommate that got into Heroin and stole from me, so when we first started dating, it was something we had easily agreed on: no lies. And usually, I kept to it. Usually, I had nothing to lie about. I didn’t even think about it as we curled up for bed that night.

Later on that night, I woke to a godawful racket that I can only compare to some sort of a ‘roided-out digital dog whistle. An alarm of some sort? I nudged Alex to see if she could hear it too. She had to. It was loud, abrasive, and probably waking the neighbors. Was it in the house? A neighbor’s alarm system? How the actual fuck was she sleeping through this? Wow. She rolled over and mumbled something incoherent. Sleeping like a baby. I got up, grabbing the .22 varmint rifle I kept next to the bed, and went to see what the noise was. In retrospect, on some level I knew that an intruder couldn’t make this sort of screeching, ear shattering noise, but I was half asleep and did the guy thing: grab gun, defend turf. Like a magnet, I was drawn into the small kitchen, and I could somehow feel that the sound was coming from that area, even though it permeated the air in a way that it was no louder or softer in one room than any other. My new laptop sat innocuously, closed, on the kitchen table, but it was emitting a sickly, orangeish red glow from the small space between the screen and the keyboard. The unnatural light formed an odd, glowing square around the laptop, except the side with the hinges that the screen rested on when you flipped it open.

Okay, I thought. I knew I should have considered that there would be something wrong with this thing. Too cheap. But could it really be making this noise? I half considered shooting the damn thing and going back to bed. I wish I had. Too much paperwork, though. Discharging a firearm in city ordinances would surely get you in deep shit, even if a rabid racoon was attacking you. Instead, God help me, I decided to open it up and see if there was some sort of alarm system or something in the computer causing the noise. Note to self, I thought, turn the damn thing all the way off before bed. In fact, remove the battery.

I sat down at the table, the unholy screeching still in my head, and flipped open the screen. The screeching immediately stopped, and the sickening glow went back to the usual, blue-light laptop screen that all of our retinas have come to know and love. I blinked a couple of times, to clear the sleep fuzz out of my eyes, and because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

I’m sorry to wake you, Colin.

I clicked “cancel,” and the error message returned, and the screeching began again, worse than before. It was actually causing my eyes to water, sort of how you’ll involuntarily cry if you get punched in the nose. I never knew that ears had the same connection with the tear ducts. Today I Learned, thought dryly as I clicked Yes.

I had no intentions of reading any terms or conditions at that hour, but I knew as I was slowly scrolling through them that I would file a complaint with Lenovo, Microsoft and any other company that had any software or hardware in that computer in the morning, because that is one obnoxious way to get someone to read an End User agreement. I slowly scrolled to the bottom and when I figured that the appropriate amount of time had passed that the computer would (think???) that I had actually read all of their legal garbage, I clicked ‘I Agree’ at the bottom of the pop-up window.

I had often thought to myself that one day, I would actually need to start reading things before signing/agreeing to them. If you pay attention to the news and tech articles, you’ll see that there are certain functions on our SMART tv’s, cell phones and computers that you are not required to allow or agree to, but that we all generally do, essentially allowing these devices to access all of our personal data. I had nothing to hide, and thought that maybe if someone wanted to steal my identity, they could pay my student loan balance while they were at it, and perhaps file last year’s taxes for me. But, like a good red-blooded American, I bought anti-virus software, carried a wallet that protected my bank and credit card info from devices that could remotely steal the info, and upgraded my cards to the ones with the chips in them when my bank asked me to. This time, though, I didn’t read it because I don’t like being told what to do. It’s possible that my stubbornness has caused me a lot of trouble, because the Terms and Conditions the stupid computer wanted me to read weren’t even all that long, compared to some of the other crap I’ve had to scroll through to access my software and apps, but I was tired and still had a headache from that stupid “Terms and Conditions Police” alarm the computer had blasted into my head. I looked at the screen, which was on Microsoft Word again. I shook my head, already forgetting about how I had (told??) my computer that I wanted my girlfriend to get a raise at work.

When you do things like this, little goofy, innocuous things, you tend to forget about it. Alex and I thought we were being clever, typing about her getting a raise into an oddly-worded field (TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT TO DO) that was obviously a help field. The text would have been ingeniously created by some Adderall-popping millennial with a three-day beard and a skinny-pants suit somewhere in Silicon Valley behind a desk, who had probably been paid an obscene salary to come up with some words that were more ‘user-centered’ than the word “Help.” That’s how all of these things work, isn’t it?

Not this one. Anyway, I went about my daily business, attending classes, working my side hustle (which is what I called my part-time office job to make it sound cool. It was my only hustle, and was boring as all hell) and using the computer as one might – I worked on my Masters thesis, sent emails, procrastinated on Reddit, Facebook and occasionally (I know, NERD) played WoW or browsed the crappy, free amateur adventures of YouPorn. Normally, I didn’t bother with Porn, because Alex was… well, I’ll say the kind of girl that didn’t require a huge hand-to-man relationship most of the time. She was an awesome girlfriend, or, at least, I thought she was, before all this. She had been coming home late a lot lately, and acting a little different. Stress, I assumed, and didn’t think twice about it. I certainly didn’t want to add to it. She was hoping to go from Assistant Department Manager to Assistant Store Manager, and she had taken on some extra responsibilities in order to do that.

One night, I sat at the computer, three beers deep, trying like hell to write some stupid paper for school. I can’t even remember what it was. I stared at the computer, tired and drawing a blank, and noticed the help message at the top corner of my screen blinking red: TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. I don’t know why I did it. I missed Alex, hadn’t been hanging out with my buddies from school or work much, and I guess the computer was saying something that spoke to me I typed, I WANT TO SEE ALEX.

Go figure, no weird error messages this time. I went to delete my typing and go back to my research when an odd program popped up. Nothing could have prepared me for what I saw. It was Alex, all right, and she was at work – but she was in the back room, I was guessing, bent over a table with her tits hanging out of her button-down shirt and her skirt hiked up around her waist. A man held her hands behind her back while he fucked her from behind. I knew this guy, it was Dan, the Store Manager. And he was fucking my girlfriend. Let me tell you, this shit put YouPorn to shame. Alex was hot, and if I wasn’t so freaked out by this, and if I wasn’t looking at my own girlfriend and her boss, I would have had a rager to take care of. If not for the audio, I could have suspected she was being raped, and sprang into action. Only, she wasn’t. People who were being raped didn’t usually tell their assailants to fuck them, and moan, and… Oh, God. I felt sick. I was in shock. There was no way that was Alex… except, hadn’t that been the outfit she left today wearing?

How the fuck did the computer do that? Maybe it was some kind of elaborate hoax. I did the only thing that my numbed brain could think of, and I called her. If I spoke to her, and she didn’t sound like she was letting some guy drill her like a porn star in the back room, maybe I would just set fire to the computer and be done with it. I called her cell phone number, and god damn it I heard her ring tone. Through the audio on that God damned video.

No, please, no. I heard her say “He’ll call back.” And with that, I knew she was cheating on me. For a sick, voyeuristic moment, I sat and watched this unfold. As they were switching positions, her on her knees, and he approaching her with his dick in his hand, I found the X at the top of the screen and closed it. Now, I had a lot on my mind. Alex, whom I was sure I would ask to marry me after grad school before that moment, was cheating on me. What’s more, somehow, my computer knew it, and had found a camera somewhere in the room and showed it to me. What was anyone hoping to accomplish with all this? What the fuck was up with this computer? What was wrong with this world?

I should have gone to Alex’s work and asked for her. I should have broken up with her on the spot, and beat the ever-loving shit out of ‘Dan,’ the man who was undoubtedly currently getting a blowjob from the mouth that kissed me every morning. Instead, I went back to the computer, and stared at the field where I had typed ‘I WANT TO SEE ALEX’, blinking red, with the message TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. My voice cracked, I could hear it through the empty apartment. I said, through very un-manly tears that I was furiously trying to choke back, “Why?”

It wasn’t loud and it wasn’t a scream; more a perfect reflection of the confusion, hurt and anger I was currently feeling. How could she? How long had it been going on? Had she ever… before we…. My train of thought was interrupted as a dialogue box popped up on the screen of my computer that said, “SHE REALLY WANTED THAT RAISE, COLIN.” I picked the computer up and heaved it against the wall, expecting to be sweeping it into the trash in a drunken rage (I pounded the rest of my beer and opened two more very shortly after) along with my hopes and dreams of a future with Alex, but it bounced off the wall and fell harmlessly to the ground. Not a chip, scratch or crack anywhere on it. What the fuck? I let out a feral cry and charged the thing. I guess I tried to tackle it. I bashed it on the floor, the table, and punched at the screen. I was seeing red.

When all was said and done, I looked at my computer, which was now on the other side of the kitchen after having been punched, slammed, kicked and punted across the room into a wall, and it sat there, unharmed, the screen seemingly taunting me with its blinking red message, which I could see across the room: TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. My drunk, angry brain had now reached an eerie state of calm as I began to accept one thing about this shitty situation: somehow, this computer was able to… do things. See things. Know things. Show me things. Possibly even make things happen.

What I should have been thinking of were bets, lottery numbers, riches, success and the like. I should have confirmed what I honestly already knew. All the late nights, her emotional distance, the extra few minutes in the mirror before work, the new underwear… It all added up now, I just didn’t want to see it those past few weeks. No, I was too angry to ask my bootleg copy of Microsoft Office to give me the key to success or make me rich. All I could think of was revenge, and I sat down before I lost my nerve, opened my seventh beer for the night, and considered all of the ways I could exact it. I finally decided on one, and slowly began to type. “I want Alex McCabe to kill her boss.” The little circle spun on the screen, loading.

I sat in the dark, drinking, and waiting.

The One With the Blackout

It was three days to Christmas and Emma finally had all her gifts in order which was no small feat since people had been vicious at most of the stores she went into. One woman had tried snatched a sweater out of her hands which resulted in a tug of war before Emma realized what she was doing and let go. She wouldn’t dream of giving Ruby a stretched out sweater anyways. Ruby was the whole reason she even had people to celebrate Christmas within the first place, if it weren’t for Ruby practically dragging Emma with her to an open call she never would be where she is with some solid friends and a nice new apartment that she and Ruby just signed the lease on a month ago. “Oh!” Emma thought as she passed an ATM, “I should get some money out to tip the super and other people for Christmas.”

She walked into the alcove, grateful to be shielded from the wind and snow that was falling fast from the sky. A few people walked out as she walked in, leaving only her and one other person in the vestibule. He was tall with black hair and when he looked up from his phone she was startled by just how blue his eyes were. She let herself discreetly check him out as she walked up to the machine under the pretense of getting her wallet out of her bag.

Just as she went to put her ATM card into the machine the lights in the vestibule went out and the automated door swung shut. A backup generator must have kicked in as a whirring sound started and the lights kicked back on so at least they weren’t in total darkness during what appeared to be a city-wide blackout. The man went to the door to only found that it had locked, trapping the both of them in the vestibule until the power kicked back on.

“Oh bloody hell, that’s great that is-” his words faltered once he laid eyes on her and Emma despite his very cute british accent she instantly knew he knew who she was. No doubt he had seen a large billboard with her and some others in Time Square, the commercials where she had to “walk seductively” towards the camera, or there was even a chance that he watched her walk the runway in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show clad in nothing but lingerie and a pair of angel wings so large her back hurt for days after the show. She busied herself digging around in her bag, hoping that he wouldn’t try to do anything creepy.

“Oh my God,” Killian thought to himself as he stared at her, “I’m trapped in an ATM vestibule with that Victoria’s Secret model, what was her name? Something Swan?” She looked up from her bag and Killian realized he had been staring at her the entire time and being incredibly creepy. She pulled out her phone, probably to text her friends about the creepy guy she was stuck with and frowned. She put it back in her bag and walked to the payphone on the wall, a relic from the 90s, and checked the line.

“Um do you mind if I borrow your phone to call my roommate?” she asked him reluctantly. “My phone’s dead and I think that payphone hasn’t worked since 2005.”

“Yeah sure,” Killian fumbled getting his phone out of his pocket and handing it to her.

“Thanks,” she said taking it and quickly dialing. “Hey, Ruby it’s Emma.”

“Emma that’s her name, Emma Swan!” Killian thought quickly.

“I’m stuck in an ATM vestibule, where are you?” Emma tapped her fingers against the wall as she listened to her friend. “This guy I’m stuck with let me borrow his phone,” her eyes flicked to him and Killian looked down intently at his fingernails hoping that she hadn’t noticed him staring at her. “Yeah I’ll be fine, you just stay at the apartment. We can’t have both of us get stuck out here,” she hung up the phone and held it out to him. “You probably have people you need to call.”

“Yeah, I should probably make sure one of my roommates doesn’t panic and eat everything in the fridge,” thankfully she laughed and Killian felt a surge of confidence as he waited for Robin to pick up.

“Hello?”

“Belle?”

“My phone’s off since we’re trying to make sure both mine and Robin’s don’t run out of battery at the same time, he’s in the other room getting candles. Where are you?”

“I stuck in the Village but listen-” Killian mumbled trying to tell Belle where he was. “Could you repeat that?” she asked.

“I’mtrappedinanATMvestibulewithEmmaSwan,” Killian said hoping the woman in question didn’t understand him.

“Killian, what the hell are you saying?” Belle said her frustration clear.

“Just put Robin on the phone,” he said.

“Hello?” Robin said finally answering his own phone. Killian repeated his mumbled message. “OH my god!” Robin said excitedly and thankfully translated for Belle.

“That’s what you were saying?” Killian could hear Belle exclaim.

“So how’s it going there? You two huddling up to share body heat?” Killian could practically hear Robin’s smile on the phone.

“It’s a bit chilly but we’re fine,” Killian said pointedly. “I’m gotta go and save this battery for as long as I can.”

“Have fun loverboy,” Robin laughed before hanging up. Killian sighed and shoved his phone into his pocket and looked over at Emma again.

She was looking out the glass door at the dark street, “How long do you think we’ll be stuck here?”

“Hard to say, the last time I think New York had a blackout like this was over ten years ago. I’m sure someone soon will walk by us and help or call someone who can.”

“I hope so, I’m getting hungry.”

“I agree with you there,” he nodded before summoning his courage and extending his hand to her, “I’m Killian by the way.”

“Emma Swan, but judging by your phone call you already knew that,” she smirked at him as she shook his hand. HIs cheeks had never felt warmer

After an hour of waiting, Emma started to doubt that anyone was going to come for them soon. Surely there were other people who needed emergency help sooner than two people stuck in an ATM vestibule. But judging by the faint gurgling sounds coming from the guy’s (“Killian” she corrected herself) stomach she wasn’t the only one feeling desperate for some food.

She groped around in her purse hoping to find something, anything even some stale crackers she threw in and forgot about, just to take the edge off. The only food like thing she could find was a pack of gum. Maybe by chewing she could trick her stomach into thinking she ate?

“Do you want some gum?” she asked, breaking the prolonged silence that had stretched between them since the phone incident.

“Is it sugarless?”

“No?” she said looking down at the box. She shrugged and popped a piece in her mouth.

“Actually you know what it really doesn’t matter, could I have a piece please?”

“You sure?” she asked, pulling a piece out for him.

“Yeah, gum would be perfection!” he said and then grimaced, clearly regretting what he had said. Emma just smiled awkwardly and dropped the gum into his outstretched palm. He shoved the piece into his mouth, apparently too fast since his eyes bulged and he made a strangled sound.

“Are you okay?” she asked. He gave a thumbs up but clearly was not okay at all. “Oh my god you’re choking.” Emma quickly positioned herself behind him and gave him the Heimlich. He sputtered and coughed and the gum came flying out of his mouth.

“I’m so sorry,” he coughed, massaging his throat with his hand.

“No need to apologize, it’s not like you intentionally choked on it,” Emma assured him.

“Thanks, but I’m also sorry about the whole phone thing,” he said.

“It’s okay, really,” she smiled at him. “I remember when I first moved to New York I saw Mariska Hargitay walking in the park and I had an internal freakout.”

He chuckled, relieving a dimple in his cheek and Emma felt herself soften, “Clearly you are a woman of good taste. Do you mind if we just start over? Forget the phone and the gum incidents?”

“Sure, hi I’m Emma,” she extended her hand to him to share.

“Killian Jones, nice to meet you.”

“So Killian Jones, what are your plans for Christmas?”

“Oh the usual, going across the hall to hang out and eat the food my chef neighbor makes. You?”

“My roommate Ruby is hosting a big party at her grandmother’s diner on Christmas Eve and then Christmas day we’re just going to stay in and watch Christmas movies.”

“Which diner does your friend’s grandmother own?’

“Granny’s? It’s over on 9th.”

“Wait, the one where the waitresses wear those red and white uniforms?”

“Yeah, you know it?”

“Certainly do, my neighbor actually works there.”

“Huh,” Emma shrugged. “Small world.”

“It appears so,” he nodded, “So how long have you known Ruby?”

“About two years? She was my first roommate when I moved out here, the first friend really.”

“In New York or in general?” Killian looked as if he instantly regretted it once the words left his mouth but it didn’t stop his words from hurting.

“Wouldn’t you like to know?” she said, crossing her arms protectively in front of herself.

“Sorry that was a little too forward,” he said looking towards the ground. Emma nodded, retreating back into herself and her purse.

“Good job Killian, really a great job” Killian mentally berated himself. Emma was clearly hurt even though she tried hard not to show it. He tried to think of a way to fix it, but instead, the silence just stretched on and on. They just stood on opposite sides of the vestibule trying not to look at each other, but on one of Killian’s discreet quick looks he saw Emma start to shiver.

“Are you cold?”

“Huh?” she said as if he was shaking her out of a trace.

“You cold?” he repeated.

“Oh, no I’m fine,” she nodded. Despite her words, Killian could clearly see her shivering.

He crossed the distance that stretched between them, shrugging off his coat. “I’m serious you really don’t need to do that,” she protested but before she could say another word Killian draped his coat over her shoulders.

“It’s the least I could do after totally cocking up our conversation earlier. Plus we can’t have you freezing to death, a Victoria’s Secret Angel becoming an actual angel seems just a tad too ironic for my taste.”

She smiled and pulled the coat tighter around herself and looked up at him, “Thank you.”

“It looks better on you anyways,” he said reaching out and pulling her hair out from under the collar. He couldn’t help but enjoy the feeling of her silky hair combing through his fingers.

“Now you’re going to get cold though,” she said apologetically.

“I’ll be fine, I lived in England most of my life I’ve seen worse,” he said.

“You’re a long way from home then, aren’t you going to miss your family this year?”

“Well yes I will but there’s nothing for me in England anymore. It was pretty much just my

brother and I and well last year he died.”

“I’m so sorry,” she said reaching out to his other hand, the hand he had tried to keep out of sight this whole time because he couldn’t let her see his prosthetic. Her hand came down to find hard plastic and she looked up at him, the question everyone always wants to ask clearly in her eyes.

“There was an accident, I mostly made it out but Liam didn’t,” Killian pulled his prosthetic away from her.

Emma was quiet for a moment before taking a deep breath, “You were really honest with me so I’m gonna be honest with you too but if you tell the press or anyone I will hunt you down,” she looked pointedly at him. Killian was too shocked to speak so he simply nodded. “Yes Ruby is my first friend ever, really she’s my first family. I grew up in the foster system never really had a family to spend Christmas with until I moved to New York and met her.”

“So I guess we found our family,” Killian said.

“Yeah, and I’d really like to get out of here so I know that I can go spend it with my weird little family.”

“I understand, believe me.”

“You do?”

“Absolutely, the first Christmas I had with my brother I was a miserable wreck. Robin’s sister Mary Margaret had to come practically drag me out of bed for Christmas dinner.”

“The holidays are a lot harder than people give them credit for,” Emma sighed.

“Yeah but I don’t know having my own weird little family makes it a lot easier. And it’ll get easier I promise.”

“Thank you, again,” Emma said and Killian suddenly became very aware of how close they were standing.

“Right well, hopefully, this power kicks back on soon so we can actually be with them,” he gulped.

“Right hopefully,” Emma smiled and Killian swore her eyes flicked down to his lips.

“This is crazy, there’s no way this could work,” Killian thought as he started to lean in. She didn’t lean away which he took as a good sign. He closed his eyes and before his completely shut he saw hers close as well. He felt her nose brush against his cheek but just before his lips could connect with hers a loud beeping noise interrupted them accompanied by the bright regular lights of the vestibule flickering on. The automated door unlocked with a loud click.

“Well I guess the powers back on,” Emma said with what sounded like a tinge of disappointment.

“Yeah well if I do say so myself I wouldn’t have wanted to be stuck in an ATM vestibule during a blackout with anyone else.”

“Same here,” Emma stepped back to gather up her things. Killian felt his heart sink, he had missed his chance with not only Emma Swan international model but Emma Swan the person who wanted to celebrate Christmas with her little found family.

“Well good luck getting home Killian,” she said before heading out of the vestibule. Killian sighed looking down at his shoes. He looked up when he heard some hurried footsteps.

“I forgot to give you your coat back,” she said pulling it off of her shoulders. “I also forgot this,” she pulled him by the collar to her lips. It was a kiss unlike anything Killian had ever experienced, it consumed him until it was just him and Emma and everything else fell away from them.

“That was-” he started when the pulled apart.

“Amazing,” she finished with a smile. “Merry Christmas Killian.”

“Merry Christmas Swan,” he said, a sudden surge of courage coursing through him, “You know I’m hosting a New Year’s Eve party, would you be interested in coming?”

“I would be but I already have plans with Ruby,” she said apologetically. “But New Years Day I know I’m going to need some greasy diner food to help recover. What do you say to a late breakfast at Granny’s?”

“That sounds perfect,” he responded already knowing that next year would be a far better year than this year had been.

My great grandfather was the bastard son of some royalty apparently? Not very close to the throne but still with the blood.

Another relative dated one of the famous football managers for a few years on & off & I cant remember his name rn because I reallly dislike football?? Will update later.

My grandmothers (?? Need to double check relative) best-friends-daughter was part of a small pop or rock group called Fuzzbox, which was reasonably successful, kudos to them!

A cousin of mine dated the actor who plays Ross Poldark atm for a while! My mum was very bitter about not meeting him.

More on the infamy side?? But my grandfather was ~2nd on the IRAs hitlist for a whole loT of the troubles,, I never knew him as he died when I was really young but it’s remarkably different to find anything about him online ;(- all my info’s word of mouth from relatives.

My great grandfather also travelled off to preach in America for years, & seemingly did pretty well for himself as we had Americans coming to get a glimpse of the old family farm for years after his death.

Looking for a Lifeline!

I know it's been a while since I’ve posted in my own words, in fact it's been almost a year, I’m sorry for that. I’ve always been terrible at keeping up with journaling, so why would I think blogging would be any different? Lol. 

If you haven’t noticed, I am a fan of TWLOHA and its message to everyone. I've always followed them, and they mean a great deal to me. So I hope in my absence, you’ve enjoyed the posts of theirs I've been sharing.  🙂

Anyways, I don’t have any really good excuse for while I haven’t posted for a long while  (well I do between Thanksgiving and Christmas last year, but not since then), and I even got a new laptop this year, that works SOOOO much better then my old, glitchy, slow ass one; so not having a computer can’t be my excuse. And I've had a lot of free time this Summer, so I can’t even say I was busy either. Basically no excuse, but I’m back; so lets catch up.

So, between Thanksgiving and Christmas I was working 4 jobs!

-Mon-Fri 8am-4pm at an office job that I hated.

-Sat & Sun at the Zoo taking kids photos with Santa

-And then Mon-Fri nights, I switched between working at my local GameStop, and helping at my other local Zoo taking Santa photos as well.

The office job I was working was doing bookkeeping at a nursing home. I met some nice residents there, and some mean ones. I met some nice co-workers, and some I didn’t quite get along with. There was 3 other girls in my office. 

One was extremely nice and helpful, and patient with trying to teach me, I got along with her quite well. I would actually have conversations with her, and it felt like she did want to get to know me. 

Another was the Boss’ wife, and she was nice and all, but also very intimidating, and she never made me feel welcomed; she would be having a conversation with the other 2 girls, but as soon as I tried to join the conversation it was like “we got to get back to work” and the conversation stopped. 

And the last girl, I would have thought I would have gotten along with her so well, we have the same taste in music and tv shows, I was like oh yay we can bond! NOPE! I did everything she gave me to do, and asked me to do and it was never good enough, or fast enough, or competent enough, or just enough. She made me feel like a complete failure! And unless she needed me for something, it was like I didn’t even exist! She would go out for lunch, and ask the other 2 girls in the office if they wanted her to bring back anything, and she never even looked my way and asked me once, never! Seriously the best days at work were when she didn’t come in for some reason or another.

Besides the one girl, no one else ever tried to make me feel welcomed in the office, I spent 6 months of my life feeling like an outcast at work, looking for a lifeline, just trying to survive. Apparently the girls in the office went out after work and hung out together, not like I was ever invited to join and get to know them. Instead I went to the movie theater next to work where a friend of mine was a manager and would stop in to see her or go see a movie all by myself. The only time I was ever invited out with them was when they would go to lunch for someones birthday, and still I think that was mostly because every one split the bill evenly except the birthday girl (which I do approve of), so it was a little less money for everyone else. Only the one girl made me feel like I was actually welcomed, otherwise I just listened to their conversations, cause no one seemed to wanna include me. And Surprise Surprise! They never did anything for my birthday! They do all this stuff for the employees birthdays, bring in breakfast, go out to lunch, decorate their office, etc. all I got was a generic card they did for everyone “Happy Birthday from ’The Companies Name’”.

I think one thing that can make even the worst job in the world bearable, is your co workers. I’ve had some terrible jobs, but I had some awesome co workers, so I didn’t dread going to work as much everyday because I got to see them. Safe to say, most of my coworkers there never made me feel like a coworker, a friend, or anything else. I went to work everyday dreading the next 8 hours of my life. When I got let go, I never even said good bye to any of the other people who worked I the building, I only said good bye to the nice one in my office and that’s it. So the ONLY things I liked about the job, was that I got to sit down to work, and the money, oh the money! I miss the money soo bad! But the job gave me SOOO much stress and anxiety, idk if it was worth the money. 😞

Although, I was able to buy my new computer, a MacBook Air, and I have wanted a MacBook since I was in high school, I just could never afford it.

My other jobs, were pretty good, only minor complaints. But I LOVED my coworkers at the other 3 jobs! The biggest complaint was that I had no time to myself because I was so busy.

Gamestop was cool, after only being there for a couple weeks they interviewed me for a supervisor position, they believed I was competent enough! The only reason I didn’t take it, was cause I got the office job, and I couldn’t turn down the money (though now I wish I hadn’t, it would have saved me soo much stress and anxiety). So I stayed seasonal, so when the holiday season was over, my employment was over there. 

The one Zoo I worked at during the week, I've worked at for years now, and I love it, and the guys who play Santa are sooo nice, I get some really nice guests, and 90% of the time everything goes smoothly, and I actually hang out with my coworkers outside of work! 

The other Zoo I worked at Sat & Sun was pretty much the same as the first Zoo, I love my co workers, and actually hang out with them outside of work. The big complaint about that Zoo, was the guy who played Santa. HE WAS AN ASSHOLE! He had an opinion on everything, and had a problem with how we run our business, and he wouldn’t even let the kids tell him what they wanted for Christmas. We told him we wanted to get a picture of the kids talking to him, and he would tell the kids to “look at him and PRETEND to tell him what they wanted” and then as soon as I took the photo, even if the kid was in the middle of something he would just kick the kid off his lap and move on to the next family. I’m sorry, but if I had kids, I would definitely NOT want them to go see that Santa! I don’t see how so many people line up to see him, and he’s been Santa at the Zoo for years! How has he not lost the Zoo business! But I still like my job, so I'm going back again this year! Lol

Anyways, so that was my holidays, as were coming up to another holiday, lol.

After the holidays, and my busy schedule, I went to Arizona and Mexico for 10 days, and it was AMAZING and relaxing, with only a few hiccups. Like an all inclusive resort without free wifi! What is that? I was gonna use wifi to check in with family back home, but that didn’t happen! And the the room was falling apart, and one of our rooms had bugs in it, and maids didn’t clean very well, like wtf kind of resort was this? But besides that, I got to see and hang out with my sister from another mister who lives in AZ and I don’t get to see often. We went line dancing, which was FANTASTIC! I got to spend my 29th birthday in Mexico, Florida, and AZ + flying over the states between! And with the time difference my birthday lasted 26 hours instead of 24! And I didn’t think about work once during the whole trip until they day I had to come back, and it was because I didn’t wanna come back and go to work!

WOW this is getting long, I'm sorry, only a couple more topics I need to talk out. Its been a very stressful year!

Well after I lost the office job, I've been pretty much Ubering for money, and not making too much of it. But all summer I got to spend weekends going to Bridal/Baby Showers, Weddings and family parties, which I've never really gotten to do before (well besides the weddings, I've never missed a family wedding), so that was awesome! And the weekends we didn’t have an parties, I went up north to my family’s summer home, which my parents just got about 2 years ago, and I’ve barely been able to go before. Which is soo much fun! Ice cream socials, the pool, bonfires, drinking games, bar hoping out on the boat! Nothing about it isn’t fun! So YAY!

If you remember, last November I moved in with my 93 year old grandma with dementia. This experience has been stressful. She spends her days trying to call her mother and grandmother, who are at the cemetery; pacing around the house; she puts dirty dishes in the dishwasher away and washes clean dishes twice; she sets the air conditioning and heat up to 80 degrees, I swear she’s trying to kill me. Its very hard, but I love her, and I love that I get this time to spend with her. And thank god for my mom who is only a call away to help with grandma when my anxiety is through the roof and I can’t deal with her atm, I wouldn’t survive this without her!

This week is going to try me though. I’m staying home all week with grandma, because she just had surgery. She had skin cancer on her nose, and they had to remove it. She’s fine, but she has a bandage on her nose that she isn’t suppose to take off, and yet she does like every time I look away, she’s not supposed to irritate it by touching it or blowing her nose, but she tries to blow her nose every 5 mins. And she’s suppose to sit down and relax with her head back so it doesn’t start bleeding again, I swear she won’t stay sitting if her life depended on it. Ill probably write more about living with her at a later date, but Ill leave it to that now. 

Lastly, while I was sitting down writing the blog post, I got a call that just devastated me. My grandma on my other side, has been having some health issues the last week and it has not been looking good, I was going to go see her tomorrow night. Well my mom called me to let me know that she passed away tonight. She was 82 years old, and though she would technically be my step-grandma, she was the only one I ever knew on that side, and I loved her just the same. My dads mom died of tuberculosis probably about a decade before I was born, but my grandpa remarried an amazing woman, and some of my extended family had trouble accepting her (the cousins opinions, usually based on their parents, who probably thought she was trying to take their mothers place, like some kids react to a step mom), but I always saw her as grandma. What kills me is the last time I saw her, I didn’t even get a chance to say goodbye! It was my cousins wedding at the beginning of October, and even though I talked to her during the wedding, when she left that night, I was out on the dance floor or somewhere, and didn’t know she was leaving, so I never said goodbye. And now I'll never have the chance too!! I know she knew I loved her, and though her body was deteriorating, her mind was still has sharp as ever! She was a sweetheart! And my sister and I kept saying we were going to go visit her and bring her dinner, or watch the Blackhawks game with her, and as much as we said it, we barely ever went, and I really wish we had! She was an amazing woman and I’m so happy I got to call her Grandma, but I’m going to regret not spending more time with her when I could, especially near the end! When my Grandpa died, over 15 years ago, I had actually seen him the week before, and gave him a hug and kiss goodbye before I left. Plus he died 2 days after Christmas, and he used to give all the grand children $10 for Christmas (there was 29 of us at the time so for him that was still a lot of money), so I had gotten one last Christmas present from him, which I never spent. On 7/24 I was at a Dairy Queen drive thru the person behind me hit the truck I was driving. I was looking at her in the rear view mirror the entire time. She had a cigarette hanging from her mouth that was unlit and she eventually backed up after hitting me. I got out of the truck and looked and I did not see any damage. She then said I didn't move you hit me I then told her No I did not hit you I am in front of you and this truck was never in reverse. Since there was no damage to the truck I did not bother getting any of her information since it was not my fault. On 7/27 I got a call from the police saying she told them I hit her. I gave them my side of the story and they said she had a witness who was a passenger in her car and they will be in touch. I also let them know I had a witness as well. The cop called me back yesterday and wanted to get my insurance information so her and I could exchange information. My question is do I have to give my insurance information to this cop? I did not hit this woman and I think she is trying to get one over on the insurance company. The cop said yesterday I'm surprised the truck does not have any damage because her car does have damage. This truck was a rental truck which was inspected at the time it was dropped back off at the rental company obviously there was no damage to it. This woman looked like she was on something to begin with and I'm guessing she was not paying attention probably looking for a lighter and let off the break and hit me. Which I still don't see how her car would be so damaged. I don't want this con artist having my information. So should I tell the cop I am not giving him my insurance information and tell her to take it to court? Should I get a lawyer? Last weekend saw Dash exceed $1,000 as it hit $1,500 per coin for the first time since its creation. My car caught on fire due to some electrical wiring, im fully comp, and have never claimed before. But sneaky as they are, they have told me that they do not cover electrical wiring faults, which has caused the fire. But the AA who towed my car in has catergorised it as fire damage. Surely they must cover the fire damage. I took it to a repair centre near me, and have asked them to have a quick check, and they also say its fire damage and what not, this has been procrastinated for so long by the insurance company, (claims company rather) that i can't remember what the repair centre has stated. Surely, fully comp covers something like this? THEIR engineers have said that there was no further damage to the rest of the car, but can i trust THEIR engineers? A full check up costs a lot, as they would have to take apart the car ( i believe? ) When i rang up the lady at the claims centre, she had no idea what case i was on, she literally said 'give me a moment to read up on your case' for me, thats a bit pathetic. While speaking on the phone with her not only was she rude, almost shouting at me (as i pressed on further ) . She told me she would send the company policy booklet to show that electrical wiring is not covered, and a letter stating the case was closed and in detail what the whole case is about. A week and a half has gone by (she said couple of days) This is the most annoying thing. She was rude, unhelpful, unwilling to help, and just taking the pee with the whole thing. I just find it sketchy that the letter has not been made, and no further actions or anything has happened (i have also opened another case about another incident - no info .. still) . I think they are just hoping i'd give this up as they are so unwilling to pay out. This is the reason I have insurance. Whats the point otherwise? Sorry for the long read. Today I bumped a parked car when trying to pull out of a paralell parking spot. Both cars were scratched, but no dents. My car was in worse shape than hers, and I took mine to an auto body shop to get a quote on what it would cost to repair the scratch. The quote I got was $671.23.
