I'm starting to think she really might have had a tiff with one of them, my guess, Katie. on the first one evening of the concert i tried to understand her sitting in the row of seats but also on the second ? And there are still miles from the stage? … this is really weird //
I’m kind of starting to wonder if Alex is the one having issues with the other guys - maybe because I was reading a biography about Kurt Cobain and how bad his relationship with his bandmates was toward the end, but it seems odd that Alex won’t do any events/press with the other guys (Matt doing a solo interview/Jamie signing Alex’s name when they were in Japan/Alex apparently not being at Amanda’s birthday thing). To give Louise the benefit of the doubt, if my partner was having issues with his friends I wouldn’t be going out of my way to hang out with their wives/gfs and Louise strikes me as being very careful with these relationships - she has no security/a lot to lose if she causes issues in the group. I don’t see her as wanting to start drama with Katie/Kristin/Amanda but being willing to separate and go to the concerts with her friends/family if Alex is isolating from the band for some reason. Anyway, all just speculation obviously it seems like Alex was out partying with Jamie in Asia so maybe behind the scenes everything is fine!
We don’t think it’s all that likely to assume just because other bands have had issues? Like these guys have managed to stay besties through thick and thin for something like 25 years, why suddenly have tension now?

You felt anticipation build up in the pit of your stomach whenever they announced the nominees for the best alternative album of 2018 category: Colors by Beck, Masseduction by St. Vincent, and Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino by Arctic Monkeys.
You held your breath, every inch of your body hoping for Alex's band to win, then they called the winner.
"And the winner is ... Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino by the Arctic Monkeys," the presenter called, stopping in between words to read the winner of off the card. You and everybody else in the room clapped and as the band stood up, Alex gave you a kiss, then walked up to the stage with the rest of the band to accept the award.
He winked at you while he was walking up the stairs without anyone but you knowing, making you blush. He walked up to the stand and took the microphone from the lady, beginning to speak. "One, two. One, two, there we go. Well, I would first of all like to thank everyone who has supported us by listening to the album, buying it, and coming to our shows. I'm very glad that you all enjoyed it enough for us to win, and for that, I'd like to say thank you, this truly does mean a lot," he said, Matt and Nick chattering behind him.
Alex said thank you one last time before they walked off stage, walking back to the table, sitting down beside you. He placed a chaste kiss on your cheek, placing the award down on the table. They soon started to call the next award nominees, and most everyone paid attention to it, you included. Alex on the other hand was watching you and you saw out of the corner of your eye that he licked his lips, one of his hands coming up to your thigh, rubbing dangerously close to the hem of your dress, coming closer and closer to go under it.
You quickly grabbed his hand and pushed it away, leaning over to tell him something. "Alex, we can't, not here, not now. We're at an awards event, one where your album is nominated," you said sternly. He bit his lip and looked as if he was deep in though, which he normally was, always coming up with the perfect response to everything.
"But, baby, you look so sexy and I don't know how much longer I can wait to 'ave you," he said, whispering in your ear, rubbing your thigh again. You moved your hand over his to top him from moving up your thigh. You turned to pay more attention to the rest of the awards ceremony.
They called the next category and said the nominees' names, another host going up to the stage to announce the winner, everyone clapping their hands, you included, when they did. While the winner was giving a small speech, Alex leaned over and kissed your neck lightly, making you look back him and give him a glare as a warning to stop. He just smirked, knowing just how to get you riled up.
He leaned over, whispering another profanity in your ear. "Baby, you look so sexy in that dress. I can't wait to have you."
"Well, you have to wait," you replied, kissing his cheek, grabbing his hand to stop him from moving any further up your leg. You looked into his eyes, waiting for him to respond, but he didn't.
You tried to be patient, hoping that he would realize that you couldn't do anything with him at the moment, and maybe not at all tonight since you would get home late and be really tired - or at least that's what you thought.
The winner walked off stage and they started to announce the next category. Though as you watched and listened, Alex started back up again with his teasing, his hand now going up your dress, ignoring your previous warnings, finding its way to the hemline of your panties, toying with it.
"Alex," you warned, grabbing his wrist to stop him from going any further than he already was. "I told you, you have to wait until we get home."
"But, baby, this waiting is driving me wild, and I know that it's driving you wild too, can't tell me otherwise," he said, getting more confident at the end of the statement. You laughed. "No, it's not actually. Because, unlike you, I'm not horny twenty-four seven," you said, turning away.
"Don't lie to me, I know 'ow horny you get. Remember the 2014 BRITS?" he said nonchalantly, whispering in your ear. You lied and said you didn't, but you did.
-
"God, Alex, please just take me already," you moaned, his tip teasing your entrance. You'd begged all throughout the awards ceremony for him to take you to the bathroom and fuck you, and he finally gave in, escaping the after party, leaving and going home.
He was now teasing you, making sure that you were a whimpering mess for him. He cocked his head and pushed himself all the way inside you.
It was a very, very long night.
-
"Yes, you do. You're thinking about it now, aren't you?" he said, kissing your cheek. You rolled your eyes and tried your best to ignore him, pushing his hands away, dodging his kisses, tuning him out, insisting that you talk to Katie and Jamie instead.
You were able to make it through another thirty minutes of the ceremony, Alex taking a break from being a narcissistic, horny, teasing asshole. Though after the thirty minutes was gone, he started right back where he started. It didn't matter how many times you told him no, your warnings only fueled him even more, getting bolder and bolder each time.
He leaned over to you when no one was looking, everyone else far too focused on the stage. "Baby, when we get home, I'm going to fuck you up," he whispered, gripping your thigh tightly. Though his words weren't abnormal for him, they did take you by surprise. You looked at him, surprised by his boldness to do that in front of everyone.
"Alex," you said, giving him a warningly look. He just smirked, more than likely planning how he was going to get you to beg for him by the end of the night.
He of course continued this behavior the rest of the awards show, making sure to tease you, placing kisses to your neck when no one was looking, whispering dirty profanities in your ear, rubbing up your thigh, eventually going under your dress to play with them hemline of your underwear .... again.
-
The event had ended and you and Alex were now at the after party, even though you hated parties. You were talking to Kelly and Nick, the only thing that would keep you sane at the moment, and you were congratulating Nick on the awards that they had won tonight. "Congratulations, Nick. You all deserve the award so, so much," you said.
"Oh, it's really nothing, but thank you anyways," he said, waving it off. Him and Kelly walked over to Jamie and Katie to talk to them, leaving you alone. You decided to go and find Alex, haven't had seen him in the past thirty minutes, wondering where he was.
You looked around for at least ten minutes, asking anyone you knew where he was, most of them not knowing themselves. You finally found him talking with Miles, who would have thought. The two most amazing friends hanging out together, you should have known.
Alex's back was facing you, so Miles noticed you first. "Oh, hey, love," he said, making Alex turn around. "Hey, Mi. Do you mind if I steal Alex away from you for just a minute?" you said, holding Alex's arm. He shook his head no and got up, leaving you and Alex alone.
"Alex, can we leave?" you asked. He smirked, taking your request the wrong way, thinking that you wanted him now. "You finally came to your senses, I see," he smirked, grabbing you by the waist, kissing your neck while no one was looking. You pushed him away for what felt like the millionth time tonight.
"No, Alex, not like that. I mean that I'm tired and want to go home," you explained. But he of course wouldn't take that as an answer, thought that you were just begging him for him to take you. He kept saying that you weren't tired and just decided that you wanted him, saying that you both could go to the bathroom instead of going home and leaving.
You kept trying to convince him, kept trying to prove that you were tired and you even brought up the fact that you hated parties to try and convince him.
Finally, you convinced him, and he was ready to take you home. "Fine, just let me have a smoke and we'll leave," he said, couldn't believe that you didn't want him. You nodded and stayed seated while he went outside to smoke.
You waited patiently - twenty-two minutes went by and still no Alex. You decided to go and look for him, then head out to the car. You quickly said goodbye to everyone and walked outside, immediately seeing Alex. He was done with his smoke, seemingly waiting for you. "You ready to leave, darling?" he asked, smirking, still not believing that you wanted to go home because you were tired.
"Yes, I am, Al," you said, taking his hand, Alex leading you to the car, opening the door for you, walking around to the other side to get in, starting the car. And finally, after three long hours of his teasing, it was time to leave and go home, and just like before, Alex of course had to tease you to his fullest extent. "Can't believe that you didn't want me earlier," he said, his voice suggestive.
"I always want you, Al, but I'm tired. I'm ready for bed," you said. You were very tired, the amount of interviews Alex was in tonight, the waiting, killed you, the amount of times you had to push Alex's hand away and tell him no, and then the after party that you had practically begged for Alex to take you home. And Alex being, well, Alex, took your begs as requests for him to take you home and fuck you, and you had to convince him that it was because you were tired, which took a lot of convincing that wore you out.
You were glad when you and Alex finally got home, you were ready to go to bed, but Alex had other plans, immediately slamming you against the wall, kissing you deeply. If you were tired before, you surely weren't now, the heat of the kiss waking you up fully from your sleepy state.
He grabbed the underside of your thighs, signaling for you to jump and you did. Alex carried you down the hallway all the way into the bedroom, almost throwing you on the bed. He began to rid you of your clothes, leaving you in just your bra and underwear, kissing you everywhere he could. You tried to unbutton his shirt, but he quickly pushed your hands away, not allowing you to touch him.
Alex leaned down and captured you lips in a hard, passionate kiss, you hands going around his neck, scratching at the fuzz on the back of his neck. He bit you bottom lip, slipping his tongue past your lips, exploring you mouth. You could taste the wine and beer he'd had at the event, as well as the last cigarette he smoked right before you left the after party.
You felt him hard against your leg, his cock straining in his tight trousers. He pulled away from the steamy kiss unexpectedly, starting to crawl down your body, kissing down your neck, collarbone, breasts, stomach, stopping at your abdomen, just above where you needed him, the ache between your legs more prominent than it had been all night long.
He looked up at you, your eyes locking with his. "Alex, please," you begged, desperate for him now.
"Look who's begging for me to fuck you now," he smirked, the cocky tone in his voice obvious. You begged him some more with your eyes, eventually getting exactly what you wanted. He pulled down your underwear with his teeth, and you kicked them off into the floor. Alex nudged your thighs apart with one of his hands and started to kiss up your thighs, stopping when he reached your core, blowing on it, sending shivers up your body.
He waited a moment, and you were about to beg him again, but he quickly dipped his head down, placing wet, sloppy kisses to your heat, using his hands to hold your thighs as far apart they could go.  And then his tongue lapped at your folds, spreading around your arousal.
He moved down to your dripping wet cunt, sticking his tongue inside of you, knowing how crazy it would drive you. You gripped the sheets, balling them up in your fists, needing to have something to hold on to, his hair not nearly long enough for you to do that.
Alex lifted his head up from your heat, wiping his face that was slick with your arousal. "Knew you wanted me. You're so wet, baby," he drawled, looking at the mess he had made of you in barely seven minutes.
He dipped his head back down to your heat again, his hands gripping your thighs tightly, holding them far apart. His tongue kept poking inside of you, and you writhed underneath him, the feeling too good, he was too good.
He moved his mouth back over to your clit, sucking it into his mouth, quickly replacing his tongue with two of his fingers, starting to pump them in and out of you slowly, setting a pace to your dismay. Though the pace wasn't nearly what you wanted, it drove you wild. He'd done this so many times, drove you wild so many times, that he knew exactly how to drive you mad, knew exactly how to make you feel so good.
You started to absent mindly grind your hips on his face, desperate to try and get his fingers to go faster in and out of you and to sink deeper inside of you. Alex chuckled against your skin, vibrations shooting up your body, and he took one of his hands and placed it on your hip to hold you down.
He quickly started to move his fingers faster, your orgasm getting closer and closer. "Alex, I-I'm so close," you said, voice trailing off into a moan as he had pressed down on your clit. He pressed down on your clit harder and with that, you shook, your orgasm washing over you.
You gripped the sheets tighter and wrapped your legs around Alex's head, his hand still on your hips. He kept moving his fingers, and you rode out your high. Alex sat up, removing his fingers from you and you whimpered at the loss of contact. He sat up, wiping his face that was, once again, slick with your arousal. You looked up at him, meeting eyes with him, seeing only lust in them. "How many do you think you can do?" Alex asked, removing his shirt, standing up to remove the rest of his clothes, leaving his bandanna neck scarf, which you didn't think much of at the moment, and you wasted no time before sitting up to help him out of his pants, stroking his cock when you removed his boxers.
He was painfully hard, precum forming on his tip that was a slight reddish purple color. He pushed you back down on the bed, sitting over your hips, straddling you. "I think that I can do th-three - oh," you said, moaning when he pushed your legs apart and pushed himself inside you, his head dropping down on your shoulder, biting down on it, sure to leave a mark.
He gave you very little time to fully adjust, starting to move once he regained some of his composure. He pulled almost all the way out of you before slamming back into you, gripping your hip with one hand, the other one holding himself above you.
Your hands ghosted over his toned chest, stopping at his broad shoulders, gripping onto them tightly, your nails digging into his skin. Alex started moving faster - much, much faster. Your eyes closed automatically, the way his cock stroked your walls felt too good, driving you mad. One of your hands moved up to the back of his head, scratching at the fuzz on his freshly buzzed head.
Your moans got louder as he fucked you harder, faster, and more mercilessly, taking good care of you like he always did. Alex's hand that was on your hip moved to rub vigorously on your clit, thrusting in and out of you faster and faster. Alex delivered a very hard thrust, hitting the spongey spot that made you see stars, flicking your clit, sending you over the edge.
Your eyes rolled back into your head, your grip on his shoulders tightening, so much so that you were sure that you would leave a mark. You rode out your high, Alex's movements not even slowing, but going faster.
Moans fell from your mouth, getting louder and louder. You'd just come down from your second orgasm, you were tired and sore and wore out, and you didn't know how much more you could take. Alex's head dropped down on your shoulder, placing kisses to it, eventually settling on a spot and sucking harshly on it.
You wrapped your legs around his waist, your feet locking at the back, and you started to grind onto him to meet his movements, the pleasure becoming too much for you to handle. A knot started to build up in the pit of your stomach, your third orgasm approaching you faster than the previous two had.
"God, love, you feel so fucking good," Alex grunted, punctuating each word with a hard thrust, flicking your clit along with each thrust. And with that, you shook, your third orgasm washing over you, riding out the intense waves of pleasure. You felt pure euphoria and bliss. You held onto Alex tightly, your legs tightening as your cunt contracted around him, drawing him in, holding him close.
You came down from your orgasm, opening your tightly shut eye, Alex's movements stopping. You untangled your legs and unwrapped your arms from around him, and he pulled out of you, sitting up on his knees, gripping the base of his cock tightly. He was clearly struggling to hold on himself, the sight of you coming undone just enough for him, and the sight could've solely made him come undone.
"Turn around, doll. On all fours," he drawled, motioning for you to turn around. You looked at him, didn't know how much more you could take, thought that you both agreed on three. "A-Alex, I don't know how much more-" you tried to say, but he cut you off.
"You can take it, and you will take it," he said. You hesitantly sat up, turning around. You looked over your shoulder at Alex. He was lining himself up with your entrance; you felt his tip poking inside of you, making you whimper out. "A-Alex."
He smirked and pushed inside you, bottoming out in one swift thrust. His hand soothed down your back, finding its way to your shoulder and he gripped it tightly, starting to thrust almost immediately. You closed your eyes tightly, the feeling already starting to become too good.
You moaned loudly when Alex began to thrust into you hardly, moving his hand from your shoulder to your hair, gripping it. His pace increased gradually, each thrust getting faster and harder. "Yes, fuck, baby, you're so wet for me," Alex groaned, somehow increasing his pace.
"A-Alex ... fuck ... faster," you whimpered, feeling a knot form in the pit of your stomach, your orgasm approaching very, very quickly.
"Givin' orders now, are we?" Alex spat, slowing his pace before slamming back into you hardly.
"I-I'm sorry," you whimpered. Alex moved his hand that was on your hip to your clit, rubbing harshly on it, and his hand that was in your hair moved down to cup your throat, pulling you flat against his chest. Sweat pooled on Alex's chest and forehead. His hand that was on your neck moved around your body to grab your breast, fondling it.
You needed something to hold on to, so your grabbed his arm that was across your front, holding on tightly, your other hand moving to the back of his head, scratching at the fuzz on his nape.
Alex's thrusts got faster and harder, and he rubbed more vigorously on your clit. You were so close, could practically taste your orgasm approaching. Alex thrusted up into you and that was almost enough for you, just one more and you were gone. But before you could, Alex stopped his movements and pulled out of you.
You were confused, had thought that he needed his release just as much as you, so you slowly turned around to face him and you propped yourself up on your elbows. "Alex, w-why'd you stop?" you questioned. He was looking you up and down.
"You was getting way too grabby for me liking," he drawled, crawling back over you. He removed his bandanna from around his neck, grabbing your wrists, bringing them up to the headrest, tying your hands to it with his bandanna. "There, that's better, innit?" he said, sitting up and straddling your hips once again, looking at the sight of you in front of him.
He started to kiss down your body, biting and leaving marks wherever he could. Once he reached your abdomen, he moved down to your heat, placing wet, sloppy kisses to your heat once again. His tongue lapped at your folds, spreading around your arousal. His hands gripped your thighs and you pulled on your restraints, desperate to hold onto something as leverage.
Alex moved down to your entrance, sticking his tongue inside of you, beginning to fuck you with it. One of his hands moved to your abdomen to keep your hips down after you started to grind on his face again, and he started to rub on your clit with his thumb on that hand. He was making you feel so, so good, but then again, when didn't he make you feel amazing?
Your moans got louder as he rubbed on your clit and moved his tongue faster, gripping your thigh tightly with his other hand. Soon he removed his hands from you altogether and moved his tongue back to your folds, pressing down on your clit with it, instead using his fingers to fuck you, moving them in and out of you at an alarmingly fast rate. He never let you get used to a feeling for very long, alternating between pressing down on your clit and moving his fingers quickly to lapping at your folds and slowing his fingers.
As you kept tugging on your restraint, the headrest started to bang against the wall, the noise echoing through the room, filling it along with your moans and whimpers. You instinctively wrapped your legs around Alex's head, drawing him in closer. He chuckled against your skin, send vibrations up your body, tipping you over the edge.
You tugged harshly on your wrists, the waves of pleasure washing over you. You moaned loudly, tightening your legs around Alex's head, crying out his name over and over. "F-fuck, Alex, fuck," you whimpered.
You came down from your high, and you were so sure, positive even, that Alex had had enough and would give you a break, but no, he kept going, moving his fingers and lapping at your folds like nothing had happened. Because to him, nothing did happen, so he just kept on.
He moved his fingers faster, curling and twisting them deep inside of you, making you cry out his name. The feeling of his fingers stroking your walls just right, the feeling of his mouth covering you heat over and over made you feel an indescribable feeling of pleasure. You were absolutely positive that there was a mark on your wrists from Alex's bandanna and were sure that Alex had many various handprints decorating your body which would no doubt last at least a week, maybe even more.
Alex had begun to suck your clit into his mouth, occasionally pressing down on the sensitive bundle of nerves. Alex looked up at you, and your eyes met and he saw just how amazing he was making you feel and he smirked against your skin, and you could feel him do it too. HIs grip on your abdomen had loosened up quite a bit and you started to grind onto his face again, trying get his fingers to sink deeper into you, to get some sort of friction since he ceased all movement of his fingers. Surprisingly, he didn't make you stop, he just let you move your hips freely. allowing you to make yourself feel good on his fingers. Though, in the back of your mind you knew that he wasn't stopping you for a reason, no doubt planning another way to make you come undone for him by his own means, his own rules, and by his own doing.
You were so close, nearly there, just needed to feel him curl his fingers inside of you, which he did while you were moving your hips, one more time. You were just about to let go whenever he stopped, pulling away from your heat, removing his fingers, making you whimper, and he sat up, leaving you barely on the edge, your orgasm so close, but so far away as it began to fade away.
"Wh-what? N-no, no, Alex," you said, your need to let go growing quickly by every passing second, the need to feel him inside you growing as well. "What, doll? What do you need?" Alex asked as he moved over you, his arms keeping him above you.
"I-I need you," you whimpered, Alex's promise of saying that he was going to 'fuck you up' coming true.
"'ow bad do you need me?" he drawled, slowly kissing up your neck, biting down on a spot. You whimpered. "I need you s-so bad, Alex." He chuckled, thinking of something for a moment, quickly giving telling what you needed to do. "You want me, then spit in me mouth," he  said nonchalantly.
You were confused for a moment. You knew that he had a spitting kink, but he never showed any part of it in all the time that you two were together. You took a moment to think about it before you nodded and he opened his mouth and you spat in his mouth. You weren't proud of what you just did, but if it meant that Alex would fuck you, then you didn't care.
"Oh, and one more thing, baby ... you 'ave to promise me that you won't come until I say you can, okay?" Alex said. You nodded, how hard could that be?
He nodded in response before nudging your thighs apart with his hand and you sighed whenever he aligned himself up with your entrance, giving himself a few tugs before pushing inside you, bottoming out in two pushes. His head fell down on your shoulder, reveling in the feeling of your walls contracting around his cock, stretching to accommodate for his size.
Once he regained some sort of control, he pulled almost all the way out of you, slamming back inside you very quickly, starting to set a very, very fast pace. You pulled on your wrists again, hoping that maybe you'd loosened the knot that Alex had tied them in the bandanna with. You wanted your hands free of it, needed to touch him, to hold on to something, only if he would untie you.
His hands were firmly planted in the mattress beside your head, holding him up above you. You closed your eyes tightly, reveling in the way Alex's cock stroked your walls so good, but they quickly opened whenever Alex stopped moving. "Alex?" you asked, searching for his eyes.
"I want you to look at me the entire time, alright?" he said, and you quickly nodded, desperate for him to move again.
Alex started to move again, his eyes never once leaving your own. You tried your best to hold on, trying to fulfill his wish of you not to let go until he said so. But the feeling was getting to be too much for you, the knot forming in your stomach once again. The way he was stroking your oversensitive walls, thrusting into you hardly was enough for you, and you let go, eyes rolling into the back of your head, your walls contracting around Alex's cock, riding out your high.
Your moans filled the room and you came down from your high, opening your eyes. You were sure that Alex wouldn't give you anything else, wouldn't give you what you wanted having done the one thing he said not to do. You were panting heavily now, the feeling too overwhelming, too much for you to handle.
"Done?" he asked, raising his eyebrow at you.
"Yes," you managed to say, avoiding his eyes.
"Good," he said nonchalantly. Alex leaned down to kiss you, it wasn't a deep kiss, but instead it was a soft, slow, and passionate kiss, full of his love and adoration for you. He pulled away and pushed a piece of your hair out of your face, smiling down at you. "You think you can do one more, love?" he asked. You were tired and sore and worn out, having been pushed over the edge several times already and weren't fully sure if you could do one more, even though it was just one. But there was something about the way he asked you, the way he smiled, and you couldn't say no to him, especially with the way he was looking at you right now.
"Y-yeah, I can do one more," you choked out. Alex mumbled something incoherent before starting to move slowly. He knew how sensitive you were now and didn't want to do anything that might cause even the slightest bit of discomfort to you, but still making sure that you felt amazing.
The mood in the room had juristically changed. He was still dominant and had all the control, but he wasn't spitting out demands or teasing you anymore, just focused now on getting the two of you there, wanting you to feel good.
Though he didn't want to cause you discomfort, he did start to increase his pace, not by much, but going faster than before and one of his hands came down in between your bodies to rub light circles in sync with his thrusts on your clit, applying more pressure ever so slightly to it every now and then. He had just restarted his movements and you were already so close to the edge again. It took just one flick of your clit and Alex's cock nudging that spot inside you that had stayed unattended to before and that sent you spiraling.
Your walls contracted around his cock for the last time of the night, drawing him in, triggering his own release. You felt his cock twitch inside of you and you felt his hot release coat your walls as he groaned, the both riding out you highs. You felt pure euphoria and bliss once again as you came down, Alex coming down from his high as well, head falling on your shoulder. He laid on top of you for a few minutes, regaining some of his strength before pulling out of you with a sigh, laying down beside you. You were panting heavily, pulling on your wrists once again. "Alex," you sighed.
He looked at you, saying your name, looking you up and down, starring at your restraints. "Oh, I'll untie you," he said, reaching up and untying your wrists, throwing his scarf on the ground, pulling you close to him even though you were both hot, sweat pooling on Alex's forehead and chest.
"C'mere, me love," he said, holding you tightly. Even though you had come down from your orgasm, you were still panting heavily, trying to breath. "Hey, hey, breath, me love, breath. I've got you," Alex said calmly, rubbing your hair comfortingly.
You both sat there for a minute so that you could catch your breath. once you did catch your breath, you laid your head on Alex's chest. "I love you, Al," you said, looking up at him.
"I love you, too, me love," he said kissing you lovingly. "Are you alright? Did I 'urt you?"
You shook your head. "You could never hurt me, Alex," you said. "But, now I'm really tired and want to sleep, so can we talk in the morning?"
"Yeah, love, we can. Goodnight," Alex responded, pulling the duvet over you two. You told him goodnight and soon fell asleep in his arms, him following not long after you.

Try and Walk on Water 5
five: breanna
Matt breaks up with Breanna. Or rather, from what Alex hears because things are still a bit tense between him and Matt, Matt tells Breanna and she kicks him out of their house before packing up and moving back with her parents. Matt takes to spending more time in the studio where Alex can play his demos but still has nothing concrete.
Suck it and See was pop and upbeat which was exactly how Alex felt at the time when he’d just arrived in New York. It had been a departure from Humbug.
Humbug had been experimentally heavy mimicking more hard rock and the songs Alex liked to blast to get himself hyped. It had been very Rage Against the Machine and Jimi Hendrix and Alex singing      Shes so Heavy    at various karaoke places with his friends.
Now he’s in LA. Arielle had been partially right about dying his hair. The black fits with better with the clothes he slowly inched towards, leaving polos for leather and waking up one day realizing he was a greaser. Alex looks at himself in the mirror in boots and tight dark jeans and wonders just how much of the person he’d create for himself was a character and how much of it was Alex playing at the cool persona he wishes he was instead of the dorky synth obsessed music nerd that spent hours at the flea market flipping through old record looking for a forgotten gem.
He liked the smell of vintage things, the white turned yellow with age.
It’s also inspiring his music. LA, the driving around and Alex flipping through spotify looking for something to listen to as he sits in traffic. It needs a heavy bass.
He chucks away the post britpop sound of english rock and starts over for scratch.
Alex wanted to write the exact type of song he wanted for the road. . .one for the road. . .he’d written sillier hooks that were very tongue in cheek the same way that      I am the Walrus     was full of nonsensical words. He starts playing with the bits of guitar riffs he’d written.
It’s then that Breanna texts him.
He’d sort of hoped it would be you.
He’d been texting you often. There wasn’t much to say when he barely knew you, there wasn’t much to fall back on for conversation, but you’d send a meme and then there would be a string of texts connecting the two of you until the next spark of conversation and he really should just ask you to hang out. You hadn’t. . .maybe you didn’t want to see him again?
Alex was driving himself crazy, going in circles.
Usually he’d go to Matt, but things were still off there.
Miles was in London for the moment.
 Fuck.
He loved Jamie to bits but he wasn’t who Alex went for this kind of advice.
Nick would just say something obvious and unhelpful. He’d tell Alex to just ask you out before Alex got to utter every worst case scenario.
     Breanna: can we talk?
     Alex: sure. Call me
     Breanna: irl
     Breanna: when r u free?
Shit. Alex was already cringing. What was he supposed to say to her?
     Alex: now. Anytime really
     Breanna: ok
     Breanna: lets grab lunch
Fuck me, he thinks to himself.
Breanna’s dyed her hair platinum blonde. It doesn’t hide the tired expression on her features.
The place is a small taqueria stand on some side street in downtown LA.
They don’t say much as they order and Breanna looks through her phone so Alex looks through his as they sit on one of the three tables next to the window you order at. Alex only gets a taco because this isn’t really the time for eating.
Breanna orders a taco because she’s a model.
 His jaw is clenched.
He didn’t even do his hair.
Alex watches Breanna through his aviators waiting for the shoe to drop.
He rushes to pick up their order.
 Then,
“So-,” she sucks in a breath.
 Alex nods. “Yeah.”
She smiles but it’s all wrong. There’s a sadness that had permeated her annoyingly perky stuck up disposition.
“Matt said he cheated,” she laughs fakely because there was nothing humorous about the situation.
“Oh,” Alex says, blandly. Was he supposed to say yes? What exactly did she want out of him?
“Yeah.” Breanna pokes at her food lazily, pointedly not looking up at him. “Did you know?”
“Yeah.” Alex doesn’t seem to be able to find the words to say much.
She looks at him hard. “So what? Did you all know? The whole time?” Her eyes water. It makes her look even more like the who people from The Grinch.
“No,” he’s quick to add. “No-I just meant. I knew. . .” He flexes his jaw, mulling his words over. “I saw him and. . .I told him he should be honest with you.”
“So. . .was it just once?”
 “Didn't Matt-”
She scoffs. “He didn’t exactly explain much and I didn’t want to hear it.” Breanna rests her head in her hands. “I-I never even kissed anyone before him! Fuck! I’m so stupid.”
“You’re not stupid,” Alex tries because he gets the certain romance that comes along with marks, that’s been peddled by all the romcoms like When Harry met Sally. “He is.”
 “Thank you.”
He pushes his plate away, appetite gone. “I don’t know. I only saw him snog some girl at a house party.”
“Was she pretty,” Breanna asks, voice cracking.
Fuck, he is so not equipped to handle this.
Alex shrugs. “I was a bit out of it. And then we fought about stuff so I don’t remember.” He doesn’t really want to get into that either. He meant it when he’d told you that he didn’t mind anymore. It’s only taken a quarter of a century, but he doesn’t feel caught up in soulmarks.
“Sorry,” Breanna sniffles. “I know it’s-he’s your friend and I wasn't sure you’d even answer. Thank you for coming. . .for being honest.”
“Breanna,” Alex says honestly, “yeah he’s my friend but-”
“I can’t,” she shakes her head, and starts crying, “I can’t forgive him. It doesn’t-I thought we-I planned my life around him you know? But I can’t forgive him.”
“I was going to say screw him,” Alex offers.
 She laughs hollowly.
Alex goes home and thinks of Arielle and driving the long way back home from hers after they’d decided to roll back whatever was going on with them as he plays guitar. He switched to his base.
He’d known that it was coming. He’d known since the start it would wind up being nothing, smoke in the wind, when neither of them was serious, neither of them wanted to get serious. They’d done more hang out with their mutual friends than anything.
-pour me one for the road?
He’s figured out the direction and sound of the next album titled motorcycle as they all work on it. Alex plays them everything’s he’s complied up that he thinks is more or less what he’s looking for as they pan for gold in the studio. Now, with actual work to do, things ease up between him and Matt.
Matt comes in with the drums, a beast on drums, and Alex grins. “Yeah baby,” he says in a horrible impression of austin powers that has Jamie snorting lager out of his nose.
Alex writes a song that might be about the months leading up to the breakup or about Breanna and Matt. Like the subject matter, it’s the winding down after a party. The slow song that a band might play when there’s spilled beer on the floor and couples fumble on the dance floor. It works better slow and melancholic.
 Maybe as the album close-r?
It’s three in the morning and they’re still in the studio, smoking blunts and jamming, Nick making fun of Jamie’s rusty base skills, “weren’t we just on tour!”
Jamie laughs, “I’ve got no muscle memory,” while they eat donuts and sandwiches from a 24hour store by the studio.
It’s a bit sad to close out an album, even for Alex, when his phone buzzes.
 You’re calling.
 You’re calling!
He slips out of the room, already thinking up another tune. Something just as slow, but happier. . .like California, the sun coming out after the rain.      Mad sounds. . .make you feel alright.    Which is neither nonsense nor about a girl.
“You called,” he says, sounding hopelessly excited even to himself. There goes playing it cool.
“I did,” you giggle through the phone. You sound just on this side of tipsy. Right, it’s three in the morning. Not everyone’s recording an album this late at night.
“I hope-,” you laugh, “you want to grab lunch? There’s this place I want to try out in Little Tokyo.”
“Any particular reason,” he answers amused and fuck he’s smile so hard. Alex hoped you’d call. He liked talking to you, he liked the way you said what was on your mind. Mostly, he liked that you weren’t in the entertainment industry like everyone else he knew.
It was a breath of fresh air.
“Not really,” you fumble out, “someone uploaded it onto insta and it looks bomb or we could grab lunch somewhere else. . .it’s cool if you say no.”
Fuck. “No, that sounds good. I keep ordering take out from the same three places so trying something new wouldbe fucking nice.”
 “Great.”
“Great.” You breathe for a second, neither of you saying a word. “Cool. See you then?”
 “Yeah.”
He writes a goodbye to Alexa and that moment in his life.

The click of the door unlocking distracts you from your conversation and you can already tell that as soon as that door opened something embarrassing would take place. And you weren’t wrong.
You press your lips together as you watch the front door open. The men around you laugh at the joke that one of them just made as you watch Y/B/F push the front door open, and you just wait until she inevitably notices who’s inside your flat.
When the door is halfway open, she immediately looks over and her eyes go wide which causes you to grin at her. She doesn’t even look your way before she completely retracts herself back out of the room with a little squeal of excitement.
You couldn’t stop the giggle leaving your lips as you watched the front door close behind her and you lent your head on Alex’s shoulder as you heard him start laughing at her reaction too.
“Who was that?” Jamie asks you, looking from the door to you.
Nick also looked completely confused, which you weren’t surprised about. Not everyone walked into a room, squealed and then immediately left.
“Just Y/B/F” You tell them as your giggles die down.
“Your best mate?” Jamie confirms, he remembered you talking about her before.
You pick your head up off Alex’s shoulder to nod, “Yeah she lives here too. Didn’t pre-warn her that you were coming though”
“She knows who we are?” Nick asks.
“Yeah we met at one of your gigs, rest is history” You smile at the memory.
Jamie looks at you curiously before asking, “When?”
“Humbug tour” You say as you sit up a bit.
“Didn’t tell her I knew you straight away though… And she only became obsessed when I was having a moment of weakness and watched 2007 Glastonbury again” You continue to tell them as you stand yourself up so you can go and check if she’s okay.
You started walking towards the front door when you heard Alex sigh.
“Why am I going out with someone who’s obsessed with me?” Alex shakes his head at you.
“Are you having a laugh?” Jamie asks him whilst wearing a very confused expression.
He was obviously thinking the same thing as you.
“Al, hunny” You say turning back to look at him, “Everyone in the room can vouch that you were just as obsessed with me as I was with you”
“I mean she’s right” Nick shrugs and Jamie nods in confirmation.
You giggle as Alex looks at them like he’s broken-hearted because they sided with you.
“You’re meant to be my mates, stick up for me” You hear him scorn them as you make your way towards your front door to see if your best friend is alright.
You open up the door and take a step outside as you say, “Y/B/F?”
You look right first but see nothing, then you check left and see her just stood down the corridor with her shopping bags still in hand. You smile at her before letting the door close behind you as you walk towards her.
You smile at her as you approach her, “Are you okay?”
“Y/N/N that was Jamie Cook and Nick O’Malley, right? Or am I seeing things?” She asks you, completely blanking your question.
“No, you’re right” You chuckle before talking some of the many shopping bags from her.
“Fuck me” Y/B/F sighs before leaning her head against the wall. Still a little in shock, it seems.
After a moment, she looks back at you and says, “Jamie Cook is sat in my spot”
“Yeah but you’re not gunna kick him out of it, are you?” You laugh.
“Hell no” Y/B/F says with a massive grin on her face.
You start slowly walking back to your door which you notice that, in her shock, she’d left her keys in.
You suppress your giggle before asking her, “Are you prepared to say hello?”
She shakes her head at you.
“Not really, I look like a tramp” She gestures down at herself.
You looked at what she was wearing and shook her head. She looked so cute in her baby pink joggers, white trainers, and her long sleeved white cropped V-neck top.
“That’s a lie, you look gorgeous” You tell her, wishing you’d attempted to look cute.
You just wore your blue jeans with a long-sleeve black top tucked into them. You were in your slippers currently too just because you weren’t going anywhere with Alex until later on, so you thought you’d be comfy for a while longer.
Alex had made his usual effort though and was dressed in his black boots, jeans and a black and white striped top. Crazy how even the simplest of outfits made him look fucking incredible.
“You think so?” Y/B/F asks you as if she didn’t believe you at all.
God you loved her so much. She was too precious.
“Yes, most definitely” You tell her with a big grin before you open up the door once again, except this time Y/B/F stays inside when she enters.
“You know what? I sometimes wish you didn’t have a boyfriend so I could get off with you” She sighs as she places her bags down on the ground next to where you’d just put her others.
You laugh at what she said before making your way back over to sit next to Alex. As you do that though you nudge him a bit so he will budge up so Y/B/F can come and sit down next to you.
“Right Y/B/F, it’s nearly been two months. You can’t wish me away that quickly” Alex tells her as he moves up and you take a seat next to him again.
You smiled at him telling her that. You knew two months wasn’t a big anniversary by any means, but you were pleased to know he knew how long you’d been together for.
You shouldn’t have been surprised though. Alex was one of the most romantic people you knew.
Everything had been plain sailing for the both of you back over in the UK thankfully. It had been a week since you were at your Mum’s and you’d all coexisted in the smallish flat quite well.
In fairness, you weren’t there for most of the day but from what your best friend and Alex had told you when you’d come back home, they got on quite well and gave each other the space they needed.
Y/B/F was now obviously off work because it was the summer holidays and Alex floated around your flat keeping himself busy either by playing your guitar or watching TV. You guessed he’d been napping too considering the state of his hair when you’d come home from work the other day.
You knew he’d being going seeing his Mum and Dad a lot too, something which you were both going to do later on. You hadn’t been to see them with him yet because you’d been knackered after work every night, but you couldn’t wait to see them in a bit.
“Sorry Al, I just miss the days when I could pull my best friend” Y/B/F shrugs her shoulders pretending to sound a bit deflated.
That seems to get Alex’s attention though and his head snaps towards you.
“You used to pull each other?” He asks you with his brown eyes staring at you.
Looks like someone liked the idea of that.
You grin at him, “It’s happened more than once”
“Would be happening again right now if it was up to me” She mumbles as she passes by you all just to chuck her shopping bags into her room.
“I mean it doesn’t look like he’ll have any complaints about it” You chuckle with suggestive eyebrows at her before she disappears off into her room.
She shouts back to you, “I bet he wouldn’t”
“I don’t have any objections either” Jamie grins at you.
You start giggling at Jamie saying that and Y/B/F comes and sits down next to you. She gets herself comfy on the settee when she smiles at Jamie and Nick.
“It’s nice to meet the both of you. I’m Y/B/F” She introduces herself.
“Yes, we have heard a lot about you” Nick smiles back at her.
Jamie grins and chuckles though, “Mostly about the present you sent Alex”
“Oh, for fucks sake” You sigh before sinking into Alex’s side a bit more.
“Ha, yeah, it was a pretty good idea and from what I hear, it went down a treat” Y/B/F giggles before nudging you in your side which you playfully glare at her for doing.
“Think treat would be an understatement from the things I was hearing” Jamie chuckles and it almost sounds evil.
“What have you heard?” You sceptically ask him before you look to Alex wondering what he’d been telling his mates.
Alex just look at you and shakes his head, “Don’t look at me. I didn’t tell anyone anything”
You could tell he was being serious.
“Oh for fucks sake, is Miles making shit up again?” You turn back to the other two Monkeys on the sofa opposite wanting to know.
“Matt mostly, actually” Nick tells you and you shake your head.
You tut before saying, “He wasn’t even there when he opened it though. He’s full of shit”
“No but apparently he saw Alex’s wrists the following day” Nick grinned.
“Alex’s wrists!?” Y/B/F shouts from next to you.
She shot straight up in her seat and turned towards you and Alex with her jaw practically on the ground.
“Jesus Christ” You murmur before running a hand through your hair.
“Did you- Oh my god” She stammers, and you just press your lips together whilst you look at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?!” She asks you, her jaw still hanging open.
You shrug innocently before pointing to Alex, “Because I feel like I divulge too much of my sex life, especially when it’s with him”
“What is that meant to mean?” Alex asks you with raised eyebrows.
You laugh, “You’re pretty so people wanna know more about you”
Nick and Jamie just laugh at that. Alex looks like he wished he didn’t ask.
“I actually can’t believe it I’ve never been prouder” Y/B/F excitedly tells you.
You grin at her, “Thank you my love”
She blows a kiss at you and you laugh before blowing one back despite being sat next to each other.
“You know if I didn’t know how obsessed with each other you are” Nick starts by pointing between you and Alex.
He then continues to say, “I would think you were the roommate Al, and they were going out”
You and Alex chuckle at that but Y/B/F backs up Nick’s point.
“He is the constant third wheel, yes” She confirms, and it makes Alex scoff as he throws his arm around your shoulder.
“I’ll get off with her in front of you in a minute” He threatens and you have try and not roll your eyes.
She laughs and stands herself up, “You won’t because you’ll know I enjoy it”.
That caused you to snort because you know it would be true.
“Yeah, there are pros and cons of having a bisexual best mate” You chuckle as you watch her walk towards the kitchen.
“Pros outweigh the cons” Y/B/F says as she turns to look back at you.
“Oh definitely” You say as Nick and Jamie laugh.
She asks you guests politely, “Do you’s two want a brew?”
“Yes please” Nick smiles at her.
Jamie nods before saying, “She’s already a better host than you two”
“I offered you a drink when you came in and you said no” You scoff, offended by your friends sat opposite you.
“She’s a shit friend just ignore her” Y/B/F says from the kitchen.
You scoff but don’t react to her other than that. You shake your head before looking over to Nick and Jamie who are silently chuckling to themselves.
They look so good; You were so glad they were here. You hadn’t seen them in over a year, so it really had been lovely catching back up with them.
“You gunna make us one Y/B/F?” Alex calls to her and she tells him to fuck off.
You pat his thigh before resting your hand on it. “Don’t be silly” You tell him, knowing exactly what she was about to tell him.
“You live here. Get up and make it yourself” She shouts back at him which makes you laugh.
“Didn’t want one anyway” Alex mumbled under his breath before he kissed the top of your head.
You had a little chuckle to yourself as you watch Y/B/F come back into the room with Nick and Jamie’s drinks in hand. And after they securely take it from her with a ‘thank you’ she goes back and gets her drink before sitting herself down next to her again.
“So, I believe you two met at our gig?” Nick asks Y/B/F more than he asks you.
You nod as she follows up with, “Oh yeah. Those were the days”
“Alex, bring back the humbug hair please” She excitedly asks him too.
“I mean it’s really not that far off” He says before running his hand through it.
He’d not gelled it back today, but after his shower he’d pushed it so it was out of his face and it was getting quite long. You didn’t fail to tell him how good it looked either.
A little longer and he’d look like a brown-haired version of Prince Charming, and you were certainly okay with that.
“But yeah we met at your Liverpool show… Then we were next to each other again in the pit for Sheffield weren’t we and we got talking before the support came on” She tells them before taking a sip of her drink.
“We exchanged numbers at that show, didn’t we?” You ask her.
She nods, “Yeah we did, because I texted you to see if you were going to the Newcastle one”
“Which I obviously was” You grin at the boys around you and they shake their heads at you.
You knew you were a weirdo superfan, but you couldn’t help it. You just loved a good gig and their music was top tier.
“But we both weren’t going to your London shows but we then realised that at the time we lived twenty minutes away from each other, so we ended up going in my car to the Newcastle one” You carry the story on.
Alex looks at you then and says, “I swear for half of these you didn’t tell us you were coming to them though”
“No I didn’t because when I came to see you at the end of the Manchester gig, you were fuming I’d been driving all over when I could have just come on the bus with you guys” You smile remembering it fondly.
You continue, “And then you made me get the bus with you to Nottingham and you got them to detour back through Manchester so I could get my car before you went up to Glasgow”.
“Fucking hell, I’m glad you weren’t in the pit for that gig” Alex says before hugging you slightly closer to him.
“Shit yeah, that was bad that” Jamie remembers.
Y/B/F looks around at the men in the room slightly confused, “Why? What happened in Glasgow?”
“The crowd were animals. They were throwing shit at us” Nick tells her.
Alex tells her, “We had to stop a few times… Didn’t we?” Double checking with the other lads.
You knew he was right because you remembered him telling you about it afterwards.
“Yeah bloody rowdy bastards. Never seen anything like it” Jamie shook his head with wide eyes, obviously remembering the whole ordeal.
You feel it was the perfect time to throw in a joke.
“So… You could say they were dangerous animals” You say almost immediately wanting to laugh at yourself.
You knew it was a bad joke but since being home with Y/B/F you’d got back into the habit of saying them.
“Oh fuck off” Alex sighs immediately and shakes his head.
He removes his arm from around you before pushing you towards your best friend.
“You can have her Y/B/F” Alex says, and you lean against your best friend instead.
She whispers in your ear, “I’m glad you said that joke because I was seconds away from saying it”
You both just have a little giggle to each other before a new conversation starts back up. Half an hour passes by really quickly whilst you all chat away and it’s all relatively calm.
To begin with.
“How are Katie and Kelly?” You ask Jamie and Nick.
“My lot are doing great thank you” Jamie smiles.
Nick nods, “Yeah, same for me”
“Both your babies are okay?” You check with a smile.
Both men opposite you nod their heads and your glad to know that everything is good with them.
“Yeah they are doing great” Nick tells you.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t even know you had a kid Nick” Y/B/F says.
“And that’s what I like to hear” Nick grins liking that his privacy is still maintained.
You chat a little more about how they are doing before you just settle into conversation and before long Jamie brings up about when Y/B/F entered the room.
“Your entrance was quite comical Y/B/F” He grins at her.
“Yeah sorry about that. Not used to having my heroes sat in my home” She says a tad embarrassed before taking another mouthful of her brew.
Nick chuckles, “Wow don’t think I’ve ever been called a hero before”.
“Well you most definitely are one. You’ve saved mine and Y/N’s lives more than you’ll ever know” She tells them.
You nod with a smile.
“How’s that?” Jamie asks.
“Well we have a saying in this flat…” Your best friend starts, and you take over to finish it.
“An album a day keeps the depression away” You smile.
Your smile only gets bigger when Alex starts chuckling next to you.
“And nine times out of ten it’s one of your albums” Y/B/F confirms.
“Or Miles’” You point out.
She grins suggestively at you before saying, “Oh yes, who could forget about that man”
“You need to prepare yourself for when you meet him” You say as you scoot yourself closer to Alex again.
She bolted up so she was sitting up in her seat properly, “Miles is coming?!”
“Not today. Don’t worry” Alex eases her worries.
“Thank fuck” Y/B/F breathed out a sigh of relief as she sank back into sofa, “I was about to run to the shower”
“What’s going on with Miles?” Jamie asks.
“They have been in contact and you know…” Alex trails off and you roll your eyes at having to take over.
Sometimes he was still too pure around his mates. You of all people knew how dirty that mouth could be.
You didn’t think he should have a problem saying what was going on.
“They’re gunna fuck, is what he’s trying to say” You fill them in.
“Oh right, nice one” Nick chuckles looking from you to Y/B/F.
Jamie asked curiously, “How’d that even come about?”
“Y/N/N half set them up” Alex informed him.
“Not really, they grouped together embarrassing me about Alex” You tell them the full truth.
“Which time?” Y/B/F asks.
You’re about to answer her but then she carries on.
“The time I told them that your most relatable video was Snap Out Of It, or when I told them that you thought about Alex when you were with that other guy” She yet again spills your secrets.
“You thought about Al whilst you were with someone else?” Jamie gasped with a grin plastered on his face.
Nick’s jaw is on the ground, but he also laughs at what had just been revealed.
“I fucking hate you” You tell your best friend.
“I can’t believe you’ve done this again” You sigh dramatically before leaning your head on Alex’s shoulder to hide for a second.
However, Alex smirks and aids Y/B/F in spilling your secrets, “Yeah, he was too boring for her apparently, so because she was listening to our music, she thought about me”
You can hear Jamie’s laugh this time as Nick starts bullying you.
“You’re actually filthy” Nick chuckles with a disappointing shake of his head.
Your head snaps back up to say, “It’s not like any of you fuckers were meant to find out”
“You all know far too much about me, it’s not right” You shake your head and put your feet up on the sofa so you can hug your legs.
“Well I’m sorry that you were being a whore for your best friend, and he found you fit too…” Y/B/F defends herself.
“I think I set you up and I don’t near you complaining when you’re shagging in the next room” She continues before taking another sip of her drink, so she didn’t laugh.
Jamie and Nick try and hold back their laughter at that and you shake your head.
“Fuck my life” You say before hiding your face into your legs that you’re still hugging.
“It sounds like he does” Y/B/F says nonchalantly, as if it wasn’t a big deal.
Nick and Jamie then burst out laughing and you can only hide by closing your eyes. Alex just chuckles and pulls you into him.
You feel him plant a kiss which makes you feel the slightest bit better.
“Sick of being bullied” You murmur as you pick your head and look to the people around you again.
Alex smiles at you and shrugs before saying, “I’m still gunna shag you either way”
He has you laughing at that, so that made it a little difficult for him to kiss you, but he got one after a second of giggling.
“Oh, forgot to tell you” Y/B/F taps your shoulder
“Want me to ruin your favourite song off Favourite Worst Nightmare?” Y/B/F asks you.
“I don’t think you can ruin that song” You tell her.
Alex asks you, “Which song?”
“You should know you wrote it” Jamie tells him.
“Yeah sorry I’ll just read her mind and tell you which one it is” Alex furrows his eyebrows and shakes his head.
Sarcastic bastard.
“Is it 505?” Nick asks with a smile.
You shake your head, “Nope”
“Stop guessing” Alex says because he knows Nick will just carry on guessing and he will probably go through the whole album without getting it right.
“See if you can guess from how I ruin it” Y/B/F grabs all of their attention
You pout, “I really don’t want you to ruin it though”
“Too bad” She smirks at you.
“Right come on tell us” Jamie hurries her on.
“The song is about a condom” She says before pressing her lips together watching for your reaction.
You pull a face at her before shaking your head, “No it’s not”
“Sing it to yourself in your head” She instructs, and you do as your told.
You literally get to the second line before your jaw drops and you turn to Alex and scowl. There’s no hesitation in your actions as you slap his arm.
“You’re fucking disgusting” You scowl at him before moving out of his grip.
“Right I’m sick of you two reading into my songs. Because I don’t even know which one she’s on about” Alex sighs
“Balaclava” You tell everyone.
“Is it bad I can’t even remember how it starts?” Jamie asks and you laugh.
“Running off over next door’s garden before the hour is done. It’s more a question of feeling than it is a question of fun” You say slowly as you look at Alex.
You couldn’t believe your favourite song now had these connotations.
“Al mate, that’s nasty shit” Nick scolds him.
Alex mumbles, “Fuck sake, I can’t win”
“I can’t believe you’ve just ruined my favourite one” You pout turning back to your best friend.
She smiles at you victoriously but says, “I’m sorry it ruined it for me too, so I had to share the discomfort”
You huff in your seat before looking at Alex.
“Sorry love but what did you think it was about?” He asks you.
“I don’t even know, I just thought it was some Bonnie and Clyde shit” You shrug and pout your lip.
“Well it’s still about that don’t worry” He smiles but shakes his head at you.
“It’s alright Y/N I’ll go out with you instead and write nice songs about something poetically tragic for you” She grabs you hand and kisses the back of it which makes you, Jamie, and Nick giggle.
“I can do that myself thanks” Alex says before taking your other hand and practically pulling you back into him.
He was the cutest but softest possessive boyfriend in the world.
“I take it you’ve told her about the album then?” Jamie smiles at the both of you.
“About Everything You’ve Come To Expect? Yeah, she came to the studio when we were doing some recording” Alex nods before getting up out of his seat.
Alex looks to see if everyone else around him still have full cups and they practically do so he just asks you if you would like a cup of tea and nod you head saying, “Please”
“Don’t mean that album” Jamie chips back in though
“What album then?” You ask confused.
“AM” He says, and you look at him blankly.
You pretty much knew everything about that album. You knew every lyric. Every beat of Matt’s drums. Every Guitar solo.
So, you were confused as to why he was bringing it back up.
“About how AM is practically an album about you” Jamie reveals, and you go deadly still.
Not being able to comprehend, you ask, “What?”
“Most of the songs on AM are about you” Jamie tells you again.
“No, they aren’t” You shake your head.
“Well they are… He’d be texting you and then start writing lyrics down the next minute” Jamie informs you.
But you don’t believe him.
“No, they’re about Arielle. They aren’t about me” You say completely in denial.
You were so confused. Even Nick was looking at you like he was sad that you weren’t realising.
“No, Fireside and Arabella are about Arielle. The rest are pretty much you” Jamie confirms.
“Yeah okay, Knee Socks is about me, but none of the others” You say.
Nick looks at you like you were a precious child that was too innocent to understand.
“Do I Wanna Know, R U Mine, One for the Road, Party Anthem, I Want It All, and if we’re counting the era Electricity is and Stop the world is obviously about you” Jamie lists them off on his fingers
“How is it obviously about me?” You asked, having none of it.
It had never even gone through your mind that any of these songs would be about anyone other than Arielle. She was with him whilst they recorded the songs to put on the album.
“Are you joking doesn’t the Stop the World’s lyrics literally go ‘Getting you alone isn’t easy to do’? Because me, Nick, and Matt were always around when you came to see us” Jamie makes his first point to you and it stuns you into silence.
“Dislikes everyone in the room…” Jamie quotes the next line but then shrugs.
“Speaks for itself that one” He says before glancing towards his mate in the kitchen who was definitely earwigging.
“Then what is it? Oh, ‘Doesn’t wanna tell you the truth’ because he didn’t, because he always thought your flirting was a joke” Jamie drops another bomb.
Nick takes over this time to tell you, “He always said that you left too soon whenever we saw you even when we were out till daylight”
“And he’s wanted to get off with you since we were sixteen” Jamie makes his final point, finishing off the chorus of the song.
“The album may have come out just after he broke up with Arielle, but he wrote most of the songs before he even got with her” Jamie tells you and that was when it hit you.
You went cold. Freezing cold.
You couldn’t believe it. All of your favourite songs were about you.
You were deadly silent and when Alex came back in you looked up at him your face still held complete shock.
“Is he being serious?” You ask.
You saw him nod and look at you cautiously. You murmur a ‘thank you’ as you take your tea off him.
“I… I don’t know what to say” You stumble on your words a bit as you watch as Alex sits back down next to you.
You really weren’t expecting that today. Or any day for that matter.
“You don’t have to say anything. They are what they are. You helped me a lot more than you actually know, but you don’t have to say anything” Alex says before taking the first sip of his tea.
You smile at him with your lips together and nod. You’d talk to him about it later, you didn’t want to make things awkward now.
“I fucking knew Stop The World was about you” Y/B/F carries it on though.
“How?” You ask completely baffled.
She tells you her theory, “After you came back and told me that you were together, I was listening to it and was thinking ‘yeah definitely. Got Y/N/N written all over it’”
You shake your head at her not believing her.
“I also guessed that You’re So Dark was based on that Halloween picture of you” She told the room and you shake your head.
Alex looked towards her with shock written on his face, “You’re freakishly good at knowing these things”
“You’re joking, You’re So Dark too?” You ask.
Alex smiles at you before pressing his lips together. So, he was telling you but also not.
YBF says, “Why are you surprised? The song literally says I want you down on all fours”
“Enough about Alex and sex please” You say having enough.
She raises her eyebrows at you, “Okay I’ll remind you of that when you wanna watch 2013 Glastonbury again and you have no one to drool with”
“I’ll just shag him as I watch it. Best of both worlds then” You fire back.
“Oh. My. God” Alex says like he wants to leave the building entirely.
You all just end up laughing.
Thankfully the conversation ends up going in a completely different direction after those revelations and the conversation is pretty peaceful. That is until an hour later Y/B/F pretty much makes you all jump.
“Nick O’Malley” Y/B/F says.
“Y/B/F” He comes back just as strong but then he quickly deflates with, “I don’t know your last name”
She giggles before she starts, “I’m surprised by you”
“How come?” He questions her curiously.
She shrugs, “I don’t know, I just always got the impression that you were really shy”
“No, not shy at all… I just don’t like people, so I don’t talk to them” Nick tells her with a grin
You laugh, “Absolute mood”
~*~*~*~
The lads stayed for a few hours before they had to head off back home to their wives and children. You’d had a really nice day catching up with them and you were glad you all got on so well together.
You decided to wait until you were alone with Alex to bring up the AM thing with him. You weren’t embarrassed by it at all, you were just a little shocked.
You genuinely never expected anything like that. And you’d never thought about any of those songs that way at all.
So, the first moment you got alone with him, which happened to be on the way to his Mum and Dad’s house, you decided to bring it up. You were driving your car that you and Y/B/F shared over to Alex’s as she was walking to her Mum’s house today.
You turned the radio down a little before you started talking.
“Al about before…” You trail off for a second.
He seemed to already know what you were about to say, “You don’t have to say anything Y/N/N, Jamie shouldn’t have told you”
“No, it’s okay” You say honestly.
Now it had sunk in, you really weren’t bothered by it.
“It’s a lot for someone to take in. He should’ve just kept his mouth shut” Alex sighs, obviously annoyed and you can see in your peripherals that he shook his head.
“Alex… All I wanna say is I’m flattered and… Call me self-absorbed but I’m still going to play them on repeat, regardless of who they’re about” You tell him honesty.
You’d spent almost the last 2 years being obsessed with that album. You weren’t for a second going to change that behaviour just because you’d been told certain songs were about you.
“You’ve got it tattooed on you; I would expect nothing less” Alex smiles at you.
You quickly glance back at him and smile. Unfortunately, you can’t keep your eyes on the gorgeous man next to you as you’re forced to look back to the road.
“I have questions though” You tell him a little sheepishly.
You hear him chuckle, “I never doubted that you would“
You quickly smile at him before asking, “How is electricity about me? Because I know for a fact that I hadn’t kissed you before that night in the bar. Because I would have remembered”
“Okay before I start, I just need to tell you that when I write a song… It starts off as literally a line or two or an idea, and then I think of a storyline around it mostly... And I liked to make the ones that have pieces of you in it, a bit more hidden” Alex explains, and you nod to show that you understand him whilst keeping an eye on the Sheffield traffic.
“So, Electricity…” He begins.
“That one was just when you used to kiss my cheek for a few seconds, and I could feel it for days after… And the nicknames you called me, and the little flirting that happened… That’s what that one was about” Alex tells you and you smile.
Alex tells you, “Oh and I guess when you helped me get over Alexa, I fell for you again then cause I literally just wanted to be on the phone to you all the time”
You turn your head slightly towards him and you’re about to say something else until he takes the words straight out of your mouth.
“If want me to explain them all I will do. I’ll go through them now” Alex says, and you smile before remaining silent.
He knew you too well.
Alex says, “Do I wanna know and R U Mine speak for themselves really”
“One For The Road literally started because I remembered being sat on the floor talking to you at your house party back in the day. I think it was the time your Mum got angry at us”
“Oh my god I actually remember that now you say it” You almost gasp.
It was the night that you forgot to tidy up after your house party. But you could remember sitting on the floor next to him because there was no room left on the sofa. You were there for a long while actually just shamelessly chatting away to him.
“So, you get that I built that song around that memory of you sitting on the floor chatting to me?” Alex double checks.
You nod your head understanding a little more how he became the creative genius that was Alex Turner.
“Okay good, so I Want It All... Is that one not obvious, now you know how I write them?” He asks you.
You shake your head, “No, not at all. I’ve got no idea how it’s related to me”
Alex sits up and turns to you a little bit more asking, “Do you not remember after that Suck It And See show, that you came back on the bus and you were completely besotted with the miniature whisky’s we had in there?”
You shake your head not remembering that at all.
“You drank almost all of it Y/N” He informed you.
“Why am I an alcoholic?” You sigh.
Alex just laughs at you before continuing, “Well yeah anyway when you were leaving, you kissed my cheek before you got into the taxi back home because the bus had to leave”
“I don’t remember that at all” You say honestly. “I remember coming onto the bus with you all, but I don’t remember drinking. I mean, I know I obviously drank but I don’t remember miniature whisky at all”
“Pisshead really, aren’t you?” Alex laughs.
You just laugh too as you make your way into High Green. You were almost there now so you hoped he’d continue spilling this information until you had to get out of the car.
“Jamie told you about Stop The World…” Alex continues on.
“You’re So Dark, primarily based on that picture of you on Halloween” He told you and you still couldn’t believe that.
It was the one year that you’d ever dressed moderately slutty for Halloween by having a short black dress on. You’d literally covered yourself in fake blood though and you had a shitty Dracula cape on that you’d splattered in blood too.
“But I don’t drive a Prius or read H P Lovecraft or Edgar Allen Poe?” You glance at him, still a little confused about that one.
“Right I had to make it clever or else you’d know it was about you. And I didn’t want you knowing… And I knew you never knew you were quoting them”
“I quoted who?” You ask with furrowed eyebrows.
“You used to quote Lovecraft and Poe all the time on your Instagram and you didn’t even know it” Alex informs you.
Oh shit.
You did used to google quotes to put as you Instagram captions back in the day. Maybe you should have fact checked.
“You love your vampire programmes and them shitty films from a few years back… And I remember your emo phase. You were always in your leather jacket and I’ll never forget that spiked collar you had”
He told you and you felt embarrassed. Mostly about the fact he was referencing really bad films that you once loved but the fact that he liked your emo phase. Most of the time you looked back at the pictures and hated them.
But you kept them on your account because there was no use in hiding from your past. You’d embraced it and one way or another it led to who you were today.
It’s another reason why you never deleted any pictures of your exes off your Instagram.
Alex continued to explain that song though, “You watch horror films which I sorta dipped into that a bit more to make it clever. But in truth I actually don’t know how you didn’t know that one was about you”
You shake your head at him, “Alex I don’t listen to your music and automatically think it’s about me. I literally only knew Knee Socks was because I used to wear knee socks like it was law”
Alex then places a hand on your thigh, which you didn’t mind about, but you knew he was doing it because he was about to make a point.
“Y/N, you used to stay on the phone to me until like four in the morning sometimes, so that’s where ‘shun the daylight’ came from” Alex tells you with raised eyebrows like you should have at least had an idea.
And he had a point.
“Alright, fair enough” You murmur before focusing on the road properly again.
Alex then decided to smugly add onto that that, “And you know I like you down on all fours”
You gulped.
Suddenly all the memories of the different time that position had been used was brought to the forefront of your mind and you had a hard time getting rid of them
“Not whilst I’m driving Al” You scold him a bit half-heartedly and didn’t even attempt to move his hand from your thigh.
Absolutely pitiful that he got you hot and bothered just by saying that.
He chuckled to himself before giving your thigh a squeeze before carrying on.
“I think the last one is Party Anthem, and that was about a dream I had” He informs you which you found really interesting.
“I dreamt that we didn’t know each other but you were there in the bar and I fully tried my hardest to pull you but…” Alex pauses for a second.
And from a quick glance over at him, you think that it’s because he was trying to remember the dream.
After a few seconds, he starts again, “You were in this bar looking stunning in this long black dress that you were in. And all I can remember other than that, is that I really wanted to get you back home with me and nothing else mattered…
“So that one was about me literally longing for you at this bar whilst everything else went on around us and I just didn’t care… Because I was there with you” Alex smiled at the memory of it.
“Did you get me?” You couldn’t help but ask with a smile on your lips.
“I woke up just as we were about to get to it. I was so fucking annoyed” Alex chuckled.
You shake your head at him as you pull into a space just outside his Mum and Dad’s house.
“Why’d you think I was so hesitant when I answered the phone when AM got released and you called me up?” Alex smiles at you as he watches as you park the car and turn the ignition off.
You undo your seatbelt before turning to look at him and sweetly smile at him. You see that he had a hair out of place that you knew would bug him, so you lent over and moved it out of his face for him.
“You’re actually the cutest Alex” You say as you comb your fingers through his hair.
It was purely out of habit at this point, messing with his hair. You loved it and you knew he did too, so he had no issue with you maintaining his vanity for him.
“Why?” He chuckles before leaning in to kiss you.
You kiss his soft lips a few times before pulling away to answer his question.
“I don’t know… I’m just… Very flattered” You took your time to think of the right words.
“Like, even when we were just talking on the phone normally, I never thought that we were chatting anything but shit like we usually do” You laugh, “Obviously we had our serious chats, but I didn’t ever think that it would be worthy enough for you to write a song or five about”
Alex chuckles at your little joke before taking a hold of one of your hands.
“You have no idea what you’ve always done to me love” Alex smiles at you before moving that hand he had a hold of and placing it against his chest.
As soon as he’d made you do that, you could feel his rapid heartbeat was.
“I think mine’s faster” You say grabbing his hand and placing it just about your heart.
Alex silently feels your chest hammering away for a few seconds and you can see his shock in his face.
“I do that to you?” Alex’s asked in disbelief, your heartbeat felt faster than his.
You smile at him, “You always have”
It was cheesy to admit, but it didn’t mean it wasn’t true.
“Tell me, how we were just friends for so long again?” Alex asks before removing his hand from your chest and holds your hand once more.
You chuckle, “I really don’t know”
“As long as you keep flirting with me for the next sixty years, I think my heart will always beat that fast for you” Alex admits with a cute grin.
“Jesus, I might have to stop because I don’t want you to die on me” You joke, grinning back at him.
Alex leans back in for a final kiss before getting out of the car, “Where’s the fun when there’s not a little bit of risk, ey?”
You laugh but shout after him, “That was disgustingly cheesy”
~*~*~*~
Another week goes by and in that week, you’d had some surprisingly good news. As it turned out, the company that you currently worked for was opening its second building out in America and thankfully that building was being opened in LA.
Your superior who you’d handed your notice too last week, came up to you at work and asked for a chat in her office. You of course agreed thinking she would be making another plea for you to stay with the company but surprisingly she gave you even better news.
She’d heard though different people that you were leaving because you were moving to America. So once she asked what area you were moving to, she breathed a sigh of relief. She then basically offered you the job to start over there in the same role you were in now but over in America.
You jumped at that chance with a quick phone call to Alex in between just to check if it was alright with him that you wouldn’t be starting till later in the year. But he of course said it was fine and that he was so beyond happy for you.
Everything seemed to be going great for you both and you’d started slowly packing the things you wanted to take back with you. You obviously didn’t need to take everything as you would be back over here to see your family and Y/B/F more than once a year.
So, you’d had a busy week to say the least. You were tying up loose ends at work and making sure everyone was catered for and then the only thing you had to do was find a suitable replacement for you at work.
You had two weeks to do that and then you were free until the end of October. The building was due to open in LA the last week of October which Alex was buzzing about because you could both celebrate your first week at work by going to his fancy Halloween party.
Apparently, he’d already got his outfit planned and he had ideas for him with how you could match. You dread to think what he had in mind but you loved Halloween so you would definitely be taking part.
In truth you couldn’t wait to get back to LA. You were ready for a change and ready to start a life with Alex.
You loved that he was who you were coming home to every night after work. You loved that he never failed to make you smile and give you a kiss every chance he got.
It made you so happy that he got on with Y/B/F really well. It was so strange to see them interacting with each other when you came home from work.
You’d come home one day during the week to see them both lay on the opposite sofas both watching the first Avengers film together and they were both talking about how pretty Scarlett Johansson was.
Something which Alex went all red about when you creeped over to him and called him out on it. He then proceeded to pull you down on top of him, still in your work outfit, so you were forced to watch it with him.
You slotted yourself into the small space between him and the back of the sofa and you all watched it together. It turned from appreciating Scarlett Johansson to Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans and even Tom Hiddleston.
When the weekend arrived, you spent your Saturday practically doing the same thing. It was lashing it down with rain all day, so you were all having a movie day.
You spent half the day cuddling your best friend and the other half cuddling Alex. You only went over to him though when you were continuing with your Marvel marathon and he got jealous of you gawking over Chris Hemsworth.
And the cuddling didn’t stop later that night when you’d both decided to head off to bed.
Despite doing nothing all day you were both knackered when you went to bed and you couldn’t wait to get to get to sleep.
It was 1am so it wasn’t really late, but you were usually awake till 2am minimum. So, as you were getting into bed an hour before usual, you couldn’t wait to get to sleep.
You were that tired that as you got changed, you didn’t even longingly look at your boyfriend as he stripped himself down. You just got yourself into your pyjamas and got into bed.
Once Alex joins you under the covers, you cuddle yourself into his body. You were both on your sides facing each other with your head tucked under his chin and buried into his neck.
Alex can feel your tired breaths on his neck, and he hugs you closer to him. You yawn slightly and feel sleep taking you over.
Alex smiles to himself hearing your yawn. He starts twirling your hair around his fingers as you slowly slip further into sleep.
Only when Alex feels you release a deep breath, he leant down and kissed the top of your head and says a soft, “Goodnight Y/N/N” knowing you’d be asleep soon so you wouldn’t have heard him if he’d waited any longer.
Your lips brush against his neck as you tiredly reply, “Night Al, love you”
Alex was slightly taken aback by that, but it didn’t stop him from saying it back immediately.
“Love you too” Was his reply and he was so relieved he could finally say it.
He’s loved you for a long while and he’d wanted to say it the first day you were his.
You smiled at what he said but you didn’t fully process his words until a minute later when it clicked, and your eyes opened. You moved back so you could look at him and he looked down at you to meet your gaze.
“Did I just? Did we just?” You stumble on your words confused.
You genuinely had no clue whether you’d just dreamed that or not.
Alex chuckled at that before he lent down and kissed you quickly.
“Yeah” He smiled.
You close your eyes feeling like a moron.
“I’m sorry, I’m so stupid. It’s not even been two months” You say before covering your face with your hands.
“Ey, none of that” Alex says before moving your hands out of the way.
Once he can see your beautiful face again he says, “Two months or not. I love you all the same”
You let out a sigh of relief. Thank god he said it back or you would have wanted to die.
“I love you Alex. I really do” You tell him properly.
Alex grinned at you before leaning down to kiss you. You both couldn’t get the smiles off your faces even as you kissed.
“I love you too baby” Alex said before pulling you back into him and held you the tiniest bit closer before kissing the top of your head again.
Hearing that fall from his lips gave you goosebumps. You don’t think you’d loved anyone the way you loved him.
And he was here. He was yours.
And he loved you.
~*~*~*~*~*~
The following Saturday was nowhere near as cute.
You’d been lay in bed all day in pain thanks to your period making an appearance.
Thankfully, Alex hadn’t been with you all day as he’d gone out early for a full day with his Mum and Dad, so you were grateful that he hadn’t seen you in the mood that you’d been in.
The same couldn’t be said for Y/B/F as when you’d dozed back off to sleep around noon, she’d come in, jumped on your bed to wake you up and you’d snapped at her. You did apologise because you were really ratty with her, but she knew you got like this sometimes especially on your first day of extreme pain.
Y/B/F knew to give you your space after that and you only ventured into the lounge where she was residing when you got yourself something to eat and drink. Which you didn’t do much of as you collected a few cans of Fanta Fruit Twist on your first trip to the kitchen.
So, you ended up spending the majority of the day in your room with your TV on watching The Office US to pass the time. The programme put you in a slightly better mood, but you were still feeling moody in your bed all day.
You hadn’t even been on your phone all day just because you knew it would piss you off looking at people having a better time than you were having.
You were currently up to the episode in The Office where Dwight, Michael and Andy were doing parkour and despite it being hilarious you weren’t even laughing because of how awful your body currently felt.
You heard the front door close over the volume of your TV and you looked at your clock to see that it was 17:47 which meant that it would probably be Alex coming back. You’d let him use your car this morning because you knew that you and Y/B/F weren’t planning on going anywhere today so he may as well have made use of the vehicle.
You couldn’t even bring yourself to get up to go and greet him though. You’d only just got yourself into a comfy position where the pain had stopped, and you didn’t want it to come back. You were due to take more tablets to dull the pain even more, yet you didn’t move.
You hadn’t even texted Y/B/F because you still felt bad about before.
Y/B/F turned around to look at Alex as he came through the front door and she said a quick, “Hey”
“Hello, you have an alright day?” Alex asks her as he quickly gets himself a beer out of the fridge.
After a long day with his Mum and Dad he just needed to relax.
“Yeah it’s been alright apart from the love of your life biting my head off” Y/B/F giggled.
Alex laughed at that. He then followed up on what he’d just been told with, “Why what happened?”
“She’d on her period and is the rattiest person in the world the first day when she’s in pain so she bit my head off when I went in to chat to her”
Alex shakes his head not even surprised.
He remembered you being ratty in high school and when anyone questioned you about your mood, you’d just be completely honest and tell them it was period pain. A tactic that seemed to work because people were too embarrassed by your answer to carry on talking to you.
“She’s still in there?” Alex asked her as he walked into the lounge.
Y/B/F nods with a smile before turning back towards the TV. Alex heads towards your closed bedroom door and he laughs when your best friend warns him, “Good luck with the she devil”
Alex walks into your room chuckling to himself as he closes the door behind him. He turns to see you lay flat on your stomach across the bed.
Your head is buried into your pillow with one eye slightly on show looking up towards the TV that shows The Office. Just from here Alex could tell that you were in pain as you’d not even murmured a hello to him.
Alex puts his beer down on your desk before moving round the bed so he could crouch down in front of you to see if you were alright.
“Hey, love, are you okay?” He asked as he tucked a strand of your hair, that was lay over your face, behind your ear.
You gave him a little smile as he then stroked your cheek for a few seconds before you shook your head and release a little groan to answer his question.
“What’s up?” He asked you, pretending that he didn’t know.
You just snuggled into your pillow a bit more feeling sorry for yourself, also not really wanting him to see you moody.
“Ey, look at me” Alex softly cooed until your full face was on show.
He gave you a grin seeing your tired face. He coaxed a little smile from you before giving you a sweet kiss which definitely made your smile get a bit bigger.
After he pulled away, he looked at you in a way you recognised that he was asking if you were okay.
You murmur into the pillow, “I’m on my period Al and I feel like I’m about to die”
Alex chuckled at your exaggeration and asked you, “Is that it?”
You frowned at him before you went to playfully hit his arm, but you quickly realised you didn’t have the energy or capability to move without it hurting so you just stopped.
“Jesus, you just be in pain” Alex chuckled seeing the anger flash through your eyes at what he said but then it quickly dissipated.
You start whining then, “It honestly feels like I’m being flayed from the inside out”
“A bit extreme that love” Alex said raising his eyebrows at you as if you were being stupid.
He was just joking with you and you knew he was, so you pouted at him.
“Until you’ve been through it you can’t comment” You grumble.
Alex then laughs a little as he stands up and kisses your forehead after he gets back to his feet.
“You may as well have stayed with your family Alex; I’m going to be like this all night” You tell him starting to feel bad that you’re inevitably going to be moody with him too.
Alex makes his way to the other side of the bed before he lays down next to you. He hugs you from behind which you find very cute and he kisses the top of your head again.
He says into your ear, “Why are you trying to get rid of me when I could be helping you?”
“Didn’t think you’d wanna be lay in bed with me being grumpy all night” You tell him honestly.
“It’s no different to any usual night then is it” Alex says in a serious tone but he’s joking with you.
You scoff, “You’re so nasty”
Alex just laughed at that.
“You know I’m joking. Please tell me how I can help” Alex said rubbing your back that was still covered with your pyjama top.
Of course you’d stayed in your pyjamas all day.
“Can you please get me more Paracetamol and Ibuprofen from the kitchen please and another can out of the fridge?” You plead with him.
Alex smiled before kissing your head again and he said, “Okay”
He very kindly went and got you the painkillers for you and once you’d thanked him you made as few movements as you could to take them, so the pain didn’t come back. Of course, that didn’t work though so you ended up wincing in pain again.
Alex was sat on the bed next to you when he asked, “Where does it hurt?”
“My uterus” You tell him as you lay back down on your stomach, but you look towards him this time.
Alex snorted at that answer.
“Other than there” He chuckled.
You tell him, “My stomach and back are killing me”
“I could give you a back message if you want?” Alex graciously offered.
You think about it for a second but then decide against it.
“Tempting, but it’ll make me wanna have sex with you, and I don’t wanna do that” You say honestly, and you see his brown eyes spark with mischief.
“I meannn”
“No” You say very quickly.
“Definitely not. No thanks, I’ve already said that I love you too soon I’m not having sex with you on my period that soon too” You tell him before you chuckle, “You either get one or the other”
Alex laughs at that. “Well, you tell me to stop just before you want to fuck me and I’ll either keep going or stop” He teases a little.
“Alex” You say sternly.
“I’ll stop I promise” Alex says before manoeuvring himself, so he was pretty much straddling your arse.
You give in, “Fine, but please be gentle with me”
Alex laughs as he pushes your top up your back, so he had access to your skin. For once you were warm for him to touch.
Probably because he’d just had a beer in his hand and the fact that you’d been in bed all day.
“Words that have never left your mouth before” Alex mumbled with a grin, but he’d said it loud enough for you to hear.
“Wow, are you trying to make me hit you today?” You scoff tying to look around at him as you felt his hands start rubbing your lower back.
Alex smiled at you, “You’ve got to be nice to me now. I’m in control of this massage and I know how to get you worked up”
“Please don’t” You plead.
“Be nice then love” He said as his hands started working on your lower back.
After about 5 minutes of him working his magic on you, you felt a lot better. You chatted about his day with his Mum and Dad and how he’d gone with them to see his Grandma and his other Grandad.
He said that he’d had a really nice day with his family around him as some of his cousins had shown up too who were a similar age to the both of you. Apparently one of them had mentioned you and how he followed your Instagram which Alex them called him a stalker for.
Alex told you that his cousins’ comeback was something along the lines of, “It’s not stalking, I just think she’s fucking fit”. You laughed at that just imagining Alex trying not to be jealous or biting his tongue, so he didn’t say something he’d regret.
You also jokingly agreed with him when he told you that his cousin apparently called him a ‘lucky man’. But in truth you were the lucky one.
You were about to go and start a life with him. And yeah it was all a bit quick and sudden after nearly two months but if two people love each other as much as the two of you seemed to, you didn’t think that there was anything you wouldn’t do to try and make it work.
You were also really lucky because as his fingers were working the aches in your muscles away and your pain started to dissipate. But you didn’t tell him because you wanted him to carry on.
This was the most relaxed you’d felt all day.
Once he’d finished telling you about his day, a comfortable silence fell between the two of you and the only noise in the room was the TV blaring away. But a comfortable silence when you’re in the presence of someone you love was overrated, so you start chatting to him again.
“Alex” You get his attention.
“Yeah?”
“How are you so good at everything?” You ask, really enjoying the feeling of his fingers massaging your skin.
Alex hums in amusement before saying, “I’m not, I just know you. I know what you like“
“But you’re still so good at it. I love those magic hands” You smile into the pillow.
Alex laughed at that as he carried on rubbing your skin, “Do you have a thing for hands or something?”
“Just for yours” You tell him, and Alex laughs again.
A few seconds pass before he asks you, “How are you feeling?”
“A little better” You hesitantly say because you didn’t really want him to stop.
“Do you want me to carry on?” Alex asked picking up on the fact that you seemed to be enjoying this.
“Mhhhh yeah, please do” You laugh a little.
You fall into conversation about your day, and you tell him that you’d literally done fuck all and just tried to sleep your pain away. He jokingly scorned you because about watching The Office all day without him which ended up in you promising him a full day watching it at some point back in LA.
As you talked about life back in LA though you felt Alex repeat a movement on your lower back that resulted in you arching your back. He’d done it once before, so you didn’t know whether he knew he was doing it accidentally or not.
So, you decide to ask, “Are you doing that on purpose?”
“Doing what?” Alex questions as he pushes from the small of your back up your spine with his thumbs.
You giggle as you arch your back again. He was definitely doing it on purpose.
“How do you know to do that?” You ask him.
“I know a lot about you and how you move” Alex tells you as if he’s proud of that knowledge.
You say “Oh right” in a way that suggests you didn’t believe him.
So, Alex decided to show you that he actually knew you like the back of his hand.
“I’ll demonstrate. If I do this…” Alex saying as he grabs your unsuspecting hips, “Your stomach always tenses and you inhale” and he wasn’t wrong you did exactly that.
Then you felt him lean forward over your body and you felt him move your hair to one side of your neck. He touches the bit of your neck that’s just under your ear and near your jaw and says, “You like it that much when I kiss you there, that your jaw always falls”
You hummed in satisfaction when he kissed you there and he nipped down on your skin which like he said made your jaw drop.
“Alex” You whine, knowing he was trying to get you a little worked up.
“You also really like saying my name whenever I do anything, and I love it” Alex said huskily in your ear and you loved it.
“I love you” You say as you roll yourself over so you’re now facing him and he’s still hovering over you.
Alex smiles and leans down to kiss you. You smile into the kiss and throw your arms around his neck, so he stays there for a little while.
You would definitively never get tired of kissing him. It had definitely become your favourite way to pass the time.
Alex pulls away and brushes your nose with his and says, “I love you too”
You smile up at him and you start to feel his fingertips trail down your body. Once he finds the bare skin on your stomach, from your top being pulled up, he slowly trails his fingertips down to the top of your joggers.
Yes, last night you’d slept in your joggers because they were so cosy and warm.
You sharply inhale as you feel his fingertips dance across your lower stomach.
He ask looking at you suggestively, “Do you want to know what else you do?”
You silently chuckle and shake your head at him. “I think you’ve had your fun for today” You say as you reach down and stop him from teasing you.
Alex pouts down at you but you just chuckle and say, “Thank you for making me feel better”
“Anything for you” He smiles before he leans down and kisses you again.
“Now, come on big decisions have to be made for the rest of the night now?” Alex says with a smile. He was back to being cute now.
“Oh right?” You ask him curiously as he hovers above you. That gorgeous chain dangling from his neck again, begging to be pulled so you could kiss him again.
Something which you restrained yourself from doing.
You actually paid attention to Alex when he asked you, “Yes, Dominos or Pizza Hut for tea? And for our classic movie night, are we watching Terminator or Blade Runner?”

The Grand Tranquility Hotel (XV)
Pairing: Alex Turner/Reader
Summary: An eccentric hotel owner and an inquisitive writer find solace in each other when they both seemed to be at the edge of rock bottom.
Notes: Sorry this chapter took so long. I must have rewritten it about 5 times before I felt completely satisfied with it. Furthermore, thank you for all of your wonderful birthday wishes, it gave me a lot of joy reading them during times like these. I hope you’re all doing well and I hope to keep you entertained with more Alex Turner content in the (very) near future.
I’d advise you to listen to ‘The Linden Tree’ from the Grand Budapest Hotel soundtrack for the final ‘scene’. It somehow felt very fitting to me, as I’ve used most of this soundtrack while writing this story. The movie had lightly inspired me to make it.
Let me know if you’d like to be added to the tag list.

Chapter XV - Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino (Pt. III)
“You’re both idiots,” she huffed under her breath, as she rinsed the bloodied washcloth in the previously stark white sink. She didn’t bother to wipe away the splatters, since she’d had to rinse it ten times before that because Matt’s nose wouldn’t stop bleeding.
They had taken their mess to the kitchens, away from prying eyes, when a picture had almost been taken by one of the paparazzi that had been sneakily investigating them. Word must have gotten around that the writer of The Grand Tranquility Hotel was visiting the new estate and seen with the owner himself.
As she cleaned the remaining grime off of Matt’s cheeks and chin, she wasn’t being as careful as she usually would be. She was pissed off, and all the men did was cast their eyes downwards and shoot her regretful looks from time to time. Even if they did still feel resentment towards each other, they were very careful not to show it in her presence.
“You know, it’s not just your reputation you’re damaging,” she added, walking over towards the hotel owner’s messy features, “I’m an accomplished writer now. If you can’t behave properly, I’ll have to write another book and lie myself out of this. I’d rather not write a fake autobiography.”
“You mean an addition to the already existing one?” Alex muttered.
She raised a brow, the washcloth momentarily wavering over the bruised cheek she’d been tending to. The injuries to his face were less severe, and she was very much considering making them worse.
“You better watch your mouth, mate,” Matt growled.
“Or what? Are you going to hit me again?” Alex challenged.
Jamie was quick to hold Matt back when he tried to get out of his chair, while Nick took a hesitant step towards Alex, in case he was about to try something. But the hotel owner remained seated on the kitchen countertop, rubbing his temples tiredly.
“I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that,” she sighed, “And I advise you to double check the personnel you’ve hired, as they clearly can’t keep their mouths shut.”
“It’s the paparazzi; they’re always here, even when we do keep an eye out for them. And my clerk is very trustworthy, he just needs some more training,” Alex told her defiantly.
“Just some training?! He was drawing squiggles in your guest book when we arrived, Al!”
“Matt, I do need you to shut up,” she snapped, “You’re letting your anger make you as spiteful as a ten-year-old. Go cool off.”
The man in question huffed, shaking Jamie’s hand off of his shoulder before making his way towards the door.
“Yes, go cool off, Matt, lest you try to beat someone up again.”
Her eyes met his in a desperate attempt to ask him to let it go, which wouldn’t have worked had it been the Matt from when they left the hotel together. The Matt now, however, was more calculated and reserved; though his tendency to use his fists as the main solution still lingers there. She had thought it gone by now, yet the circumstances had indefinitely proven her wrong.
The door slammed behind him with a finality, and she returned her annoyed gaze to Alex, clearly disappointed with the way he’s treating her best friend. Nick left shortly after, mumbling about what idiots they were being, to go search for Matt. Jamie didn’t stick around for too long either, evidently feeling awkward staying in the brooding tension that hung around them.
She silently continued to care for his split lip, peering up at his eyes ever so often, which seemed darker and more distant than usual.
“What did you mean by that?” she murmured.
“Mean by what?” he asked.
“You know what.”
He gave her a look, “You mean your fake tales about my perfect hotel?”
“I never wrote anything but the truth, Alex. I simply left out the lesser parts.”
He hummed, clearly not persuaded by her words. He was being stubborn, and he was very aware of it, yet she decided it would be better to continue the conversation rather than let unspoken words hang in the air for the remainder of her stay.
She fumbled with the stained cloth in her hands. “Did you read it?”
He met her eyes with a lifted brow, as if trying to decide whether or not to respond. “Of course, I read it,” he eventually admitted.
“Then you should know I didn’t fabricate anything. It wasn’t some publicity stunt I was trying to pull off, Alex. Naturally, I wanted to give your hotel the credit it deserved, but I wasn’t going to lie while doing so. That’s not who I wish to be.”
“Yet you left out all that I did to you. You could have ruined me. Why didn’t you?” He sounded almost desperate, now.
“I think you know why.”
She felt his hot breath waft over her lips. His face was suddenly so much closer to hers, making her inhale sharply. He smelled just as she remembered, like expensive cologne and cigarettes. He’d been smoking more.
“It’s not right, Alex.”
“Why not?” he whispered. His orbs had dilated significantly, and only wavered from hers to look at her licking her lips.
“Because you still despise me for what I’ve done.”
She ran her hand over his cheek, before stepping out of his embrace. She left the room without sparing him another glance, leaving him to his never-ending train of thoughts.
Nick hadn’t been able to get much out of Matt, and saying it disappointed him was the understatement of the century. He had chased him around the hotel for a bit until they reached the doors to the gardens, where Matt was now taking photographs with his aged camera. Nick knew he needed to give Matt more time, yet his patience was running low. He had played the waiting game for long enough.
So, when Miles had arrived at the front desk asking for Alex, he had given him a relentless glare that made the mayor’s eyebrows shoot up so far they were almost closing in on his hairline. Only he could make this look as comical, and Nick felt his steadfastness waver around his friend. “Alex is a bit busy at the moment, I’m sure he’ll seek you out once he has the time.”
It was a lazy lie, which Miles obviously saw through, because all he replied with was an “ah” while his curious eyes trailed towards the guest book and skimmed over a familiar set of names. “I see,” he continued, “Very busy indeed…”
Before the clerk could say any more, the mayor was already trailing off towards the elevator, appearing deep in thought.
“I’ve always found the mayor such an odd man,” said the young man next to him.
Nick sighed. “Shut up, Mark.”
She was surprised to hear a knock on her door. Not because she was deathly scared of knocks on doors, but because she wasn’t really sure who was still on speaking terms with her right now. If anything, she had expected to have been left alone for quite a while, with Matt needing time to brood and sulk and the others to decide whether to finally kick her out or not.
She hadn’t been sure what to expect when she opened the door, but it most certainly hadn’t been Miles Kane’s warm smile.
He really didn’t want to have this conversation. And he’d really rather be anywhere else. Yet, here he was, in the gardens of his own hotel – if he could even call it a garden compared to his other property; the city didn’t allow much room for greenery – seeking out the man who had beat him up not hours before.
“Come to take another blow at me, then?” Matt asked. He had his camera raised; his right eye squinted shut to take a good look inside the lens. He stood facing the small pond that was outside; one of the very few hidden gems of the hotel.
“Wouldn’t want to ruin your pretty face any more than I already did,” Alex tried.
Matt huffed in response. They were both testing the waters here. “As if. You barely touched me last time.”
“Oh, really? You want to swap jumpers and make another move? I recall your timing being off. Those drumming classes haven’t done much for you, have they?”
They both snickered, a sense of familiarity washing over them like they were back in old Sheffield, when they had nothing more to worry about than homework and bickering over how to snog a girl.
“Not much to see around here, eh?” Matt asked, lowering his camera to run his eyes over the rest of the reasonably-sized plot.
“We were more concerned about the interior of the hotel.” Alex had his brow raised.
“Real shame. Not much space to keep horses and such.”
The inquiry was there, and Alex quickly picked up on it. “Mardy is being properly looked after, Matt. She’s doing fine.”
The man grumbled a bit under his breath about how ‘fine’ wasn’t good enough which the hotel owner decidedly ignored.
“I’m not here to bestow any more grief upon you, Matt. I’m here because we have a shared interest that I wanted to talk to you about.”
“A shared interest?” Matt repeated blankly.
“I…” Alex exhaled sharply. “I hope you’re happy together. I really do. And that’s all Ive ever wanted for both of you in the end; happiness. I’m glad you’ve found it together.”
Matt’s brow furrowed in confusion. “Alex, we’re not together.”
“... You’re not?”
“Is that what that whole ordeal was about?”
Alex had a difficult time processing this new information being thrown at him, and could barely hide the glee that was bubbling up in his chest. He was interrupted, however, by Nick running towards them. He couldn’t recall him ever running so fast for anything in his life.
“I think we have a problem,” Nick gasped, “Miles is here.”
“I’m happy to hear you didn’t lose your job,” she gave him a genuine smile as he poured her a fresh cup of tea and added in some milk.
“Me too, if I’m honest. Spending so much time on the hotel made me realize how much I actually liked doing it and how much I was missing it. I can only be glad people were still willing to vote for me. Guess my good looks pay off after all.” He winked at her, making her roll her eyes.
“I’m sure they voted for you because they were reminded of the goodness in you when you made that apology on the tele.”
“You watched that?” He asked.
“Of course, I did. Wouldn’t have missed it for the world.”
The twinkle in his eyes seemed to diminish as he cast them downwards. He fumbled with the cup, his fingers making circular motions over the ceramic. “I’m not really sure I’m all that deserving of their praise. Not to mention, yours.”
“Miles-“
“I’m really sorry for what I did. I never meant to cause any of this. I really wanted to do right by Alex, because he’d been hurt by so many people before and I didn’t want to see it happen again and yet… When I showed him that notebook I think I only really did more harm than good. I know those words were never meant to be read by anyone else and that Alex would have been doing so much better had I just…” He let go of a shuddering breath.
She moved her hand to rest on his forearm in comfort, unable to bring about any form of resentment for the man. She met his eyes. “I know. You were only ever trying to protect him. I can only thank you for that. What happened between me and Alex would have happened either way, whether or not you showed him what I wrote. Neither of us were in the right state of mind back then.”
He gave her a watery yet relieved look, and nodded in understanding. He wrapped his arms around her. “I just hope he’ll get it into that stubborn noggin of his soon that he’s never going to find anyone better than you.”
She laughed against his shoulder quietly, “Me too.”
When Miles finally left the room, it was nearing dinner time, so he was planning on heading straight down to the hall. He didn’t get much further than the lobby, though.
“Relax, Al,” he told the frantic hotel owner, “All we did was talk it out. Seems like you took the more violent approach.” Miles eyed his injuries carefully, as Alex avoided his gaze.
“Where is she?” Matt asked.
“In her room, last I checked. Why?”
“Alex has another stupid idea.”
She was about ready to head downstairs for dinner when Matt burst through the door. He gave her a quick look up and down, shaking his head in disapproval as he did so. “Oh no, you’re not wearing that. Put on something fancy.”
“Excuse me?” she asked incredulously, placing her hands on her hips.
“You heard me,” he said, “I’m taking you to dinner. Now come on, hurry up.”
She wasn’t able to protest as he’d already disappeared back out the door. “This day just won’t end, will it?” she muttered.
Now her mother should have seen her. Though perhaps all she would’ve done is complain about how she wasn’t married yet instead of taking a look at her state of dress. She was honestly quite proud of the work she’d put up, even going as far as to wear heels with it.
She took a gamble that she was supposed to meet Matt in the lobby when he didn’t appear to be waiting in the hallway outside, and a part of her expected him to already be sitting in the hall eating his fill of chicken wings. But he was nowhere to be found, not even at their usual table.
“Miss,” a voice stopped her as she was about to sit. It was Nick. “I’ve reserved a different table for you tonight. If you’ll follow me, please.”
“No.”
Nick gave her an annoyed look.
“Stop being difficult.”
“You like it when I’m difficult.”
The first thing that filled her senses were the bright rays of lights hanging around the garden, and only when she’d taken in the starry night’s sky was when she noticed a record playing softly in the distance. Nick led her to a clearing near a pond hid behind a few bulky bushes, where she found a table and two seats waiting for her.
“Please, don’t be too difficult on him,” Nick whispered, before taking off again.
His footsteps on the soft grass made her turn back around.
God, he was wearing that same suit from all those years ago. And he still looked damn good in it.
“Would you care to join me for dinner?”
She blinked at him.
“You actually want me to?”
“Yes,” he said, and she could tell he meant it.
He was busy pulling out her chair for her when someone rounded the corner.
“You’re still not ready?” Matt asked, his arms carrying what appeared to be a set of menus slumping against his chest in annoyance. “I’m never doing this again.”
“I recall you volunteering to be our waiter this time, Matthew. This was of your own volition.”
“Wait a minute,” she turned to glance back at the man in question, “You volunteered to be our waiter? What happened? I wasn’t absent for too long, last I checked.”
Matt rolled his eyes, before gesturing towards Alex. “You think I was just going to leave you alone with him? We compromised.”
“You suggested it,” Alex said.
“It doesn’t matter anymore. Are you ready to order now, or should I take my outstanding services elsewhere?”
“Why did you set all of this up?” she couldn’t help but ask. After Matt had run off to escape their incessant teasing about him maybe actually enjoying waitering, they had only managed to make some small talk. But of course, ‘how are you’s and ‘fine’s aren’t enough to form an entire conversation during dinner.
He gazed up at her, and he looked tired. No longer did she feel captivated by the boyish charm in his gaze; this time, she was completely entranced by the mature and graceful man that sat before her.
“I don’t despise you for what you did, love,” he murmured. “I did when it happened, but the moment you left, I knew I’d made the biggest mistake in the entire world.”
Of course, he’d made the biggest mistake. She felt her heart drop to her stomach.
He had realized that he should have rid of her long before that. That she was nothing but a bother in his perfect grandeur life.
“I never should have let you go.”
She was awaiting his rage, thinking this was the calm before the storm. That he would snap at her or insult her again. But, he didn’t.
For once in his life, Alexander Turner didn’t get defensive. He didn’t storm off, nor make a scene. He simply started talking, like it was the most regular thing for him to do. As if he had always done it, as unnatural as it may have seemed.
Her bottom lip started trembling, her exhaustion fuelling her already tensed emotions. “Then why did you never call? Why did you never pick up the phone? You said you always would if I called you.”
“I didn’t think you’d ever want to see me again after all the things I said to you, after how I lashed out on you.”
“But you could’ve at least tried,” she reasoned.
He nodded, running a tired hand through his hair before it landed on hers and squeezed it lightly. “I didn’t try because I knew you’d be better off without any of this.”
He gestured vaguely towards the looming hotel behind them. “This hotel… It was out of the money from the back of my pocket. The risk was far higher than I thought it would be, and as we were signing the official papers, all I could hear were your warnings being whispered in my ear over and over again.
The opening didn’t go without loss. We barely got any visitors in the first few months, and I was certain that that was going to be it. That it was all over. All I’d worked for, down the drain, because I’d taken one last pathetic gamble to get to the place I’d always wanted to be.
And then you came, a bright light shining over all that was bad, publishing a book about the grandeur Tranquility Hotel, with nothing but praise and comforting words.”
He narrowed his eyes at her for a fraction. “Of course, I read your book. And I only felt the guilt and shame that had been haunting me during all that time you were gone.
You deserve so much more than what I can give you, writer. You have talent, a big heart and the stubbornness of a swine and I love that. You’ve proven more than enough times that you can take care of yourself. It made me realize how much I was holding you back from your full potential after you left.”
“Alex-“
“I was not in the right set of mind, and I can’t say I am now. I’m not very patient, I have a bad temper and I can be cruel when I want to be. You saw the way I reacted when I came to the conclusion you and Matt were a thing. I haven’t changed. Not one bit. Me wanting you to be my girl again is the most selfish thing I could ask for, which is why I won’t.”
Her vision was blurry, and a lump had formed in her throat that felt so heavy it could drop back down to crush her heart in a beat. “You’re not selfish, Alex. I wrote that book for you. It was my last attempt to find some solace after all that had happened. I’m only glad to hear it worked out so well for you and the business, I would’ve hated to see your legacy go to waste.”
But if that’s how you feel, I’m asking you- I’m begging you, be selfish. Be selfish for and with me, because I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
A tear solemnly ran down the length of her cheek, which was swept away by Alex’ gentle caress. He captured her lips with his, and took her chin in between her fingers. It was soft and sweet; though felt as dramatic as the finale of an Italian opera, for his decision was made.
He loved her, and she loved him, and all was right in the world.
She ran her thumb over his straining knuckles. “And please don’t worry about any of the boys, Al. They love you and care for you, even Matt. Even when you don’t make the best decisions, they’re there for you, because that’s what family does.”
“Family that needs to sock you in the jaw from time to time,” Matt himself added, as he set their plates of food in front of them.
Alex clasped his shoulder, a brotherly look exchanged between them once more.
And so, the rest of the night was spent exchanging long awaited kisses and glances, until the plates were licked clean, wine glasses empty, and clothes strewn across the grassy yard behind conveniently placed bushes under the night’s sky.
The end.

Present Day
April 2019
Alex sat in the back of the chartered jet, on route to Argentina with the rest of the Monkeys. Matt and Jamie were joking around in the front while Nick had fallen asleep half an hour ago. He'd like to get some rest as well, but it just wouldn't come to him. Instead, he kept checking the time. Still too early to call, wasn't it? “Fuck it,” he murmured and pressed dial.
Miles picked up after the first ring.
“Good morning, Miles. This is Alex, calling for our fourth, scheduled 'let's have a phone friendship'-call. How are you this morning?” The disdain for their situation, but mostly for Miles' idea of a separation, dripped from every syllable.
“You ever start a conversation with me like that again,” snipped Miles from across the ocean, “I'll hang up. Got it?”
Alex rolled his eyes. “Too early for your sense of humor, ey?”
“No,” retorted Miles. “But this is the fourth time you call me and use that passive-aggressive tone of yours and you know how much that tone pisses me off, which means you're doing it on purpose. You're mad at me and I get it, okay? You don't like this. Well, guess what?” said Miles as his voice got louder, “I don't like it either. But it is what it is. And for what it's worth, you and I are busy. You're doing your tour and I'm doing mine, so it's not as though I'm stopping us from hanging out at some beach or whatever!”
Alex knew that. He knew Miles was busy. He was busy, himself. And if fucking annoyed him that he hated that fact. He ought to be enjoying it. It was the last leg of their tour and it had been a good tour! He should be having the time of his life at the moment. Instead he felt trapped. Worse, he felt shut out of Miles' life. “That's not what I'm saying! But you're the one who decided that we need distance. And then you fucking kicked me out of your apartment! So excuse me for being a little bitter about that!”
“I didn't kick you out, Al.”
“Yes, you did. Call it whatever you want, but that's what it was.” After that night, they hadn't spoken for half a week aside from the occasional and impersonal text message. And Mexico had been no different. Miles had barely spent any time with him and when he had, they had always been around other people. Never alone. “You're treating me as though all of this is my fault.”
Silence fell over them. A few moments passed before Miles spoke up. “I'm sorry. That wasn't my intention.” Another beat. “You’re different than I am. I always worry and my head is filled with different scenarios of all that could go wrong. You let your heart guide you. You're reckless. And I don't mean that in a bad or mean or insulting way. I'm just trying to explain myself. I fear I'm not doing well with that.”
Alex leaned back, closed his eyes. “Are you blaming me for that kiss?”
“No, no.”
“Sounds like it, Mi.”
“You told me to lose control, Al!”
“So you are blaming me!” He took offense. “I was caught up in a moment,” Alex reminded him. “You're the one who kissed me all slow and…” The memory of it caused a shiver to run up his spine. “You know well enough how you kissed me!”
“I know what I did,” snapped Miles. “Why the fuck do you think I'm staying away from you, huh? I told you I can't control it.”
“Stop punishing me for that,” bit Alex back.
Silence fell over them again. Alex took a few deep breaths, rubbed the weariness from his eyes and leaned forward, propping his heavy head up on his hand.
“I feel like I'm losing my mind,” admitted Miles, breaking the quietness. “I don't want to snap at you. Alex, I miss you! But all it takes is one look at you and all my resolve melts away.”
“So does mine,” said Alex defensively. “I wasn't trying to seduce you,” he whispered, occasionally remembering that he wasn't alone on that plane. “But whenever we're that close, I just forget everything else. My mind blanks and all that's left is…you know what!” He sat up straight again. “You barely talked to me in Mexico. You treated me like a stranger! That hurt.”
“Louise was there!” Miles shot back. “That—”
“That what?” demanded Alex to know when Miles abruptly stopped speaking.
“I didn't want to be in the way,” finished Miles, using words that Alex could tell were chosen carefully.
“That's not what you wanted to say, Miles! Don't lie to me!”
“It fucking hurt, okay? Happy now? Is that what you wanted to hear?”
Was it? Alex didn't know. If that's what he wanted to hear, didn't that also imply he had purposely paraded her around in front of Miles? Had he done that? Was he that sick of a bastard? Had he been that bitter about Miles' wish for a bit of space? And how could he have known that her presence would hurt him? “That’s not…”
“Damn it, Al! What are we doing?”
“I don't know, Mi.”
“You know, yesterday, I was actually looking forward to our call. I had this idea for a riff that I wanted to share. And Victoria told me a joke that I thought you'd really like. I wanted to tell you that my coffee maker broke. I knew you'd be happy to hear that, since you hate that thing so much! All this stuff that real friends talk about.”
Alex would have loved to hear all that. “Then why were you so grumpy when you picked up?”
“Cause I had just woken up from a dream.”
“And?”
“And you’re not here,” confessed Miles.
Alex felt his eyes grew heavy and his skin turn hot. How he wanted to be there, in bed, with Miles! This early in the morning, the pillows and sheets would be warm and soft and Miles would be, too. He would be sleepy and he would have that lazy, subtle little smile on his face that always let him know that he had dreamt well. Alex would wiggle closer towards him, maybe brush his leg against his dick to tease him just the slightest bit. And he would kiss him. He’d take his time and be tender, until he would know that Miles was awake. Then he would kiss him harder, deeper, vigorously. He’d roll on top of him, grab his arms, pin him down and…
Alex shook his head, swallowed hard. “Oh,” was all he could reply.
Miles seemed to understand. “Exactly.”
“Should we hang up?” asked Alex, unsure how to handle this whole mess.
“Not yet,” pleaded Miles. “Tell me about your day. Tell me boring things.”
Alex turned to stare out of the window and found the endless horizon staring back at him. “The hotel staff temporarily lost one of Nick's guitars,” he began and took Miles step by step through the day's events. They talked for another hour, about benign little things that carried no meaning at all. At the end of his story about how the Monkeys' driver got lost on his way to the airport, Alex could hear the hoarse, breathy sound of Miles' soft snores.
The desire to be lying next to him in that moment became almost unbearably painful. That feeling of being stuck returned to him. And there was nothing he could do to make it go away. “Sleep well, Mi,” whispered Alex and ended the call.
Two weeks later.
“You really don’t mind if I toss all those guitars into the trash?”
Huh? What? Of course he would mind! These were his guitars! Alex shook his head, turned to stare his father with a look of shock. “Why would you want do that?”
“Jesus Christ!” said David Turner and placed the heavy box with old cables and what-nots onto the floor. “You were listening, then!”
Alex rolled his eyes as he wiped the dirt from his hands. “Yes. Sorry, dad. Got a lot on my mind today.” Even though it was a chilly spring day, he was sweating nonetheless. “How many more boxes are there?” He tried not to sound as annoyed as he felt. “I thought you and Miles already did the heavy lifting?”
“We did a lot of it,” said his dad as he picked the heavy box back up. “But there’s a whole lot of stuff in this garage that I want out. And then we have to paint the ceiling. Else we can’t begin to build the new racks.”
“We?” asked Alex, with dread.
“You said you were staying for a bit!”
Only because his mother had promised him that there was no home-improvement planned for the duration of his stay. Otherwise he wouldn’t have shown up. Played. By his parents. Once again! Story of his life. “You know I could pay for people to do all that for you? I’d be happy to!” He’d pay a fortune not to have to do the work himself!
“Where’s the fun in that, son?” He handed the heavy box to Alex. “Go put that with the other stuff. Your mother and I are very appreciative of the fact that you so generously want to spend your hard-earned money on us, but every once in a while she and I like doing a bit of the work ourselves!”
Why, Alex would never understand. But what choice did a son have than to buckle up and help! So he went and put the box with the other stuff.
“Want to tell me what’s on your mind?” asked David as he rummaged through a bucket filled with nuts, bolts and screws.
“You’ll never need those again,” pointed Alex out, only to receive a stern glare in return.
“You don’t know that!” He picked the bucket up and handed it to Alex. “Go put that—”
“With the other stuff,” finished Alex. Bloody thing weighed a ton! “Nice of you to offer your ear but…”
“I’m not your mother?” His father chuckled. “She may understand the matters of your heart a bit better than I do, but you’ve been glum and moody for almost a year now. If her words haven’t helped you by now, maybe it’s time you give me a chance.”
Alex smiled. And felt bad. He had great parents, didn’t he? He shouldn’t have spent the day bitching about helping with the garage. “How about a break, dad? Do you want something to drink?”
“A coffee would be quite welcome at the moment. There’s a new coffee machine in the kitchen but I don’t know how to work it. Would you mind?”
“Of course not. Plain black coffee?”
“No,” grinned David. “Café latte with foam, please. Thank you, son.”
A what now? Alex shook his head as he made his way inside. And then he saw it. In the corner, by the fridge. A big, tacky, bright red machine with a blinking LCD display, a few gaudy chrome buttons and two empty mugs waiting to be filled. Oh, it had to have been him! There was no way his parents would ever buy themselves something as big and ridiculously expensive as this thing. And it was expensive! He knew, ‘cause he’d been there, four years ago, when Miles had went and gotten himself the previous model of that fucking coffee monster! Who had ended up carrying that stupid thing up the three flights of stairs to Miles’ apartment that day? Well, not Miles! He’d been busy carrying the Saint Laurent bag filled with a new pair of shoes!
Alex made his father his desired cup of coffee, then went back to the garage. “Here.”
“Thanks.”
“When did he drop by?”
David looked up mid-sip. “Who?”
“Miles. When he did drop by? He’s the one who got you that fucking coffee machine, isn’t he? He knows how much I hate those. He’s getting a kick of letting me suffer!”
“It’s a coffee machine, Alex. Don’t be dramatic. And if you must know, it was Miles. He came by last week. Called it a very belated Christmas present. Your mom already fancies herself in love with that machine.” He chuckled at that. “It’s a little big, yes. But quite efficient! And very good at its job. I’ve never tasted coffee that good! Why don’t you like it? You love coffee.”
A simple coffee maker got the job done just as well. And if one wanted fancy coffee, then one could walk to a coffee shop and get it. The idea of putting overly big machines into a kitchen was beyond him. Also, it annoyed him that Miles hadn’t told him that he’d dropped by his parents’ home, even though they had spoken on the phone a few times since. It annoyed him almost as much as the fact that his parents had actually gotten to see him, while he was stuck on the bloody phone with him.
David sat down on an old wooden chair in the corner, taking another sip. “Very good coffee, indeed. When you’re done with those two boxes, we should call it a day. It’s already late and we’ve yet to find something to eat. I told your mother I’d fire up the grill, but I’m not sure we’ve got anything to put on it. By the way, will you ever tell Miles that you’re in love with him?”
Alex was in the midst of lifting yet another, even heavier box when his father’s words sank in. It slipped right out of his hands and he barely managed to jump away in time to avoid having it land on his feet. “I’m sorry, what?”
“I fear we’re out of steaks.” When Alex met his eyes, David smiled warmly. “Talk to me about Miles, son.”
“I got to hand it to you, in terms of bluntness, mom got nothing on you!”
“Don’t tell her. Let that be our secret.” He grinned.
Alex sat down on the now ignored box. “How do you know?”
“Aside from the obvious? That boy has spent the last ten years or more walking in and out of our house as though he lived here. Then his visits become less frequent. Eventually they stop. And, coincidentally, at the same time you become a hollow shell of your former self.”
At that, Alex scoffed. He wasn’t a shell, was he? A little preoccupied with his thoughts, maybe. “That’s a bit dramatic, don’t you think?”
“Am I wrong?”
Well…he had been distant lately. And downtrodden. And maybe he had listened to a few too many depressing songs, realized Alex. He shook his head and admitted defeat. “No.”
“The pictures hurt you, haven’t they?”
“How the fuck do you know about the pictures?” Alex had been on the plane back from South America, on route to London to visit Miles, as friends did. The tour was done. He had also planned on visiting his parents. The entire thing had been completely above brow and Miles wouldn’t have been able to take offense or accuse Alex of breaking another one of Miles’ ridiculous and annoying boundaries!
But on the plane, he had gotten bored. It had been a very long flight. So he had checked the Daily Mail gossip page. And there they had been. Pictures of Miles with his former girlfriend, partying in a club, huddling together, whispering to each other, smiling at each other. It had hurt. Badly. But he wasn’t allowed to take offense, to be hurt, was he? He had a girlfriend in France, waiting for him to return. And Miles was single so his friend had done nothing wrong! However, that didn’t change a thing. No matter how often he had tried to explain it to his heart since then, the stupid just wouldn’t listen and stubbornly kept hurting. So Alex had traveled directly to his parents, instead.
“I saw them on Twitter,” explained David, pulling Alex out of his thoughts.
“What?!” His dad was dropping bombshell after bombshell!
“How am I supposed to keep up with what the bunch of you are doing?” David asked indignantly. “I’d like to know it if one of you does something that might require a few stern words or a compliment. Twitter is quite efficient to stay on track.”
“You don’t know how to work the coffee machine but you know Twitter?”
“You don’t know how to work Twitter but you know the coffee machine!” Retorted David.
Point taken. Alex sheepishly looked away.
“When Miles visited, back before you all went on tour,” Alex’s father continued, “I could see the light return to your eyes. You were laughing and playing guitar and enjoying life a little more. I’m not blind, Alex. I watched you on tour together. I’ve seen you around each other. I don’t wrap myself around my best friend when we hang out. We don’t kiss each other’s cheeks all the time. I don’t hold his hand when I walk with him through the house. I can see the look in your eyes when Miles is near. Whenever you think he caught you staring at him, you quickly look away, even blush, and crack a silly joke that nobody but Miles finds funny. Your mother and I have shared quite a few giggles over that.” He was giggling now. “For what it’s worth, I’ve never seen Miles look at anyone the way he looks at you.”
Wouldn’t it be nice if it were true? But it wasn’t. And his father was imagining things, sad though that was. “Miles and I…he and I…” Alex struggled to find the right words. As always! “We’re both male.”
“I hadn’t noticed,” deadpanned his father.
Alex groaned. “I’m trying to say...I mean...for as long as I’ve known him, I never worried about going too far and crossing a line. I never thought there were lines to cross. Because, well, I mean…we had girlfriends. It never occurred to me that…”
“You thought that, because he’s a guy, you could get close to him without risking your heart?”
“Relationships end. Friendships are supposed to last forever. I never meant to fall in love with him. I never thought I would. I never even thought I could, because he’s a guy! But it’s becoming clearer to me these days that my heart never cared for that. I think I may fallen in love with him at first sight.” He gave his father a helpless, hopeless shrug of his shoulders. “The other stuff…the attraction, the physical…ugh, it’s really hard to talk to you about this,” admitted Alex and looked at the ceiling, blushing hard. “It’s always been there. I just never noticed it before. At least not like I do now. But now that I have, I can’t…un-notice it, even though I want to un-notice it so badly.”
David got up, put the empty mug away, and took a seat next to his son. He wrapped an arm around his shoulder, gave it a squeeze and pulled him against his side. Alex placed his head on his father’s shoulder, closed his eyes and just reveled in the comfort he was receiving. “It’s so complicated now.”
“Now? Did something happen between the two of you?”
Alex marveled, and would forever remain grateful, at the fact that his father was utterly unfazed by the fact that his supposedly straight son had just admitted to being in love with a man. His dad was treating it as the most normal thing in the world. It allowed him to be more honest than he believed himself capable of. “He and I…we did…you know what…last year. It got messy after that.”
“How?”
“I got scared. I had all this feelings,” Alex said quietly, scooting closer into his father’s arms. Who would have thought that, at over thirty, a parent’s embrace could still be so wonderful. “I didn’t know what to do or how to react and I ran. That’s when we stopped speaking. When he came here, we agreed to be friends again. And only that. Only friends. But it’s much harder than I thought!”
“Tell him that,” suggested David.
Alex chuckled sadly. “I have, I think. Miles doesn’t want to be with me. He’s not in love with me. I can handle that. It hurts, but I can handle it. We agreed we’d never do that thing again because it would ruin our friendship. He said he would never risk losing me for a bit of sex. And I love him even more for that.”
“You got it bad, don’t you?” He gave Alex another squeeze. And smiled widely. “But it all sounds so sad and tragic when you tell it. It doesn’t have to be!”
Alex was stunned. “How can it not sound that way? I’m madly in love with my best friend who doesn’t love me back!”
“Alex, come on. Get up, son. Let’s go shopping. We’ll get burgers and fries and that green stuff that your mother likes so much when we eat it.”
Alex followed his father towards the car. “Vegetables?”
“Precisely.”
“Dad, wait! What just happened? I tell you why I’m sad and you smile and want to go shopping? What did I miss?”
“The answer,” smirked David. He came to a stop in front of the car, turned towards his son and gave him a quick hug. “Everything you’re trying to figure out is already in here,” he said and tapped Alex’s forehead with one finger. “Take a break with me, clear your head, and then, when I grill the steaks and you finish up in the garage,” he interjected, “you go and ponder what you just told me. And I guarantee you, it’ll make you feel better and show you what to do next. I’m serious about the steak, though. I am hungry!”
“If you think you know the solution to all my troubles, why won’t just tell it to me?”
“There are a few things in life that one needs to figure out for one’s self, son. You wouldn’t believe me anyway,” said David as he got into the car. “You’re coming?”
Alex groaned but got in.
“Remind me, we need milk and cocoa powder as well. And those white foamy sweets.”
“Marshmallows?”
“Yes! Your mother loves those with her hot chocolate. I’m telling you, that coffee machine is the best gift we’ve ever gotten! It’s so versatile!”
I once bought you a car, Alex wanted to point out. But whatever! Stupid coffee machine. Stupid, single Miles and his stupid, fancy coffee machine!
Later that night, Alex all but sprinted across his old bedroom when his phone rang. “You got ‘em a bloody coffee machine!?” It truly did bother him!
He heard Miles’ laughter. “I needed a new one, I told you! And they had one on sale. It was a really good deal, so I got it for your parents. You should be happy that they’re enjoying it. They are enjoying it, right?”
“Don’t sound so smug,” grumbled Alex as he laid back on his bed. “Speaking about gifts, how come they get one and I don’t? You’ve yet to pick up yours and still haven’t said a word about mine. May I remind you that we missed out on celebrating Christmas and my birthday together, which means you’re two gifts short!”
“I have gifts for you,” mumbled Miles and Alex had to concentrate on making out the words. “The gift I got you for your birthday is pretty big. It’s in London. You just have to drop by and pick it up.”
“Big how?” asked Alex. “You made a huge fuss about my gift for you, which you – in my humble opinion – refused to accept for an entirely ridiculous reason!”
“Not big like that.” Miles hesitated. “The box is big. It’s actually a bit of a funny gift. The one I got you for Christmas…well, I kinda got it for you last year, long before we…you know…and I haven’t given it to you because…it might be the different kind of big. And after the huge fuss I made about your gift for me – which, in my humble opinion, was entirely reasonable – I really shouldn’t give mine to you. But I really want you to have it. It’s a dilemma.”
“Oh, it’s not!” Alex reassured him, grinning. “I’m not like you! I have no issues accepting big gifts! When will you be in London so I can get my gifts?”
“Impatient much?” Miles laughed. “I won’t be back before next week. I’m visiting a few old friends. Then I’ll head to my mom. And there’s a birthday party near Sheffield two days from now, so I’ll be near your parents. Maybe I drop by for coffee!”
“Whose birthday?” asked Alex dryly, deliberately ignoring the coffee quip.
“I don’t know,” admitted Miles. “Friend of Victoria’s. Came by one of our shows. He invited everyone, said it’ll be a huge party. The whole band is going. What are you doing next week? You’re back in Sheffield, aren’t you? Admit it, you’ve spent a good portion of your day pointlessly glaring at the poor, innocent coffee machine!”
“I haven’t. I don’t glare pointlessly. I glared at it angrily.” Alex sank deeper into the cushion. “Don’t know about next week yet.” He hesitated for a moment, but then did suggest what he’d initially intended to do anyway. “We should meet, Miles. It’s been a while.” Almost three weeks.
“Okay.”
“Okay?” That wasn’t the reply Alex had expected.
“Okay,” repeated Miles. “Let’s meet. In London. Soon. So you can get your gifts.”
“And my shirt,” which Alex had absolutely not forgotten about.
“Does that mean I can keep the belt?”
“Dream on!” Both laughed. It felt so good to laugh with him. And even though he’d never, ever admit it to Miles, Alex had to agree that talking to him via phone was a bit easier and less distracting than speaking to him directly. “Miles? Are you busy at the moment? You got plans tonight?” Are you meeting your ex, he really wanted to ask.
“Nope. Just me and the TV tonight. You?”
“Me and no TV. It was a long day.” Was it a bad thing that it made him happy that Miles had no plans for the evening? He pushed the thought away. “Did some working out, sort of. Dad had me carry a lot of boxes. That bloody garage! I think I’m getting old. In the old days, I could go for days without sleep. But now? It’s sad, truly.”
Miles was laughing again. “I feel for you, babe! But you’re right. I also like my off-days much more than I used to!”
Alex was shaking his head at himself. One little word. Babe. And here his fucking heart was, fluttering around in his chest like those four little letters actually meant something.
Words.
Meaningful words.
Alex frowned. A thought had just crossed his mind, but it had been too brief, too fast, to take note of in time. It made him feel strange and restless, all of sudden. Like he’d glimpsed at something very important without realizing it. And now that he tried to get a closer look, it was gone. Where did one search for a thought?
“Alex? You’re still there?”
“Huh? What?”
“Are you okay?”
“Yes,” said Alex, without feeling okay. He sat up straight. “Did you ever feel like…like…” “Like what?” asked Miles, clearly interested.
“I can’t even say,” Alex described. Or rather failed to. “Something just crossed my mind! Just a second ago! But I don’t know what! I just…argh! You must think I’m crazy!”
“I would never think that of you. Did the idea for a song come to you? A lyric? A melody?”
“No.” Alex tried to recall that elusive thought. “I think not. Feels different when that happens.”
“Well, let me know if you figure it out,” Miles told him. “You got me all curious now!”
A loud groan slipped from Alex’s throat. “Ugh. I bet I won’t get a moment’s sleep tonight. I just…I had a thought. But I don’t know what thought that was. It’ll keep me awake all night, I swear! It was something about…words.” He felt as though he was trying to recall the entire plot of a book he’d never even read!
“Words, huh? That’s a vague description. Good words? Bad words? A specific word? Words that somebody has said to you? Or wor–”
“Stop!” There it was again. And there it went away again. “Argh!” Alex drove a hand through his hair, only to hiss in pain. Shit. He’d forgotten that hair, once grown to a certain length, would tangle and knot and not part easily. “Damn hair!”
“I’m not there with you,” Miles reminded him somewhat pointedly. “So if you jump from thoughts to hair to words and back, I’m unable to follow you. Oh shit!”
“What? What happened?”
“Oh no! Oooh! I was supposed to go to the dentist today for my routine checkup! I completely forgot about that!”
Alex rolled his eyes. Speaking about jumping from one thought to another! “Damn it, I thought something bad had happened!”
“It is bad!” Miles was adamant. “I don’t like letting people wait around for me! It’s rude and not fair. I should have canceled sooner. I knew I wouldn’t be in town today. Gotta call tomorrow and apologize!”
“To the dentist?” Alex scoffed. At least he wasn’t the only one who was crazy!
“To the person who makes the schedule! Mock me, I don’t care. But I don’t like people to think I’m some prick who believes he can come and go as he wants. I’d never do that! Which, if I may remind you, is the reason the guy who drove the bus when you and I did our tour liked me a lot better than you!”
“Well, he might have liked you better but while you were sitting in the bus like the well-behaved little rockstar that you are, I was sleeping out! So, which one of us made the wiser decision? I believe I did!” Alex grinned when he heard Miles begin to laugh.
“Fair point,” agreed his friend, taking it in stride. Alex yawned and Miles laughed louder. “Wow, you weren’t lying when you said you’re getting old! I think it’s time you try that whole sleeping thing! Slumber well, Al.”
“Night, Mi.” He hung up with a chuckle.
I’d never do that.
Alex bolted upward and zoomed in on Miles’ words. “He’d never do that.” The thought came back. Clearer, this time. “He’d never risk that.” Miles loved Alex. As a friend, yes. But he loved him. And he’d never risk losing him as a friend for a bit of sex. He had said so himself. And if he would never do that? What did that mean?
Alex got up, paced the room with large, impatient strides. They were friends. They loved each other. But…if Miles would never risk their friendship just for a bit of sex, then…then it hadn’t been just a bit of sex. And if it hadn’t been that, did that mean that it had been more?
With a groan he stripped off his hoodie. Suddenly he felt warm, sweaty even. His head was overflowing with thoughts. His entire body was pulsating, throbbing with something he couldn’t define. His eyes landed on the phone which lay on top of the comforter.
Miles.
We’ve locked our hearts in.
Alex’s breathing became uneven as he was hit by memories of Miles explaining his feelings to him. His friend had been so honest, so open, this entire time. If only Alex had paid closer attention to his actual words! Or even just his actions! All those nights that he’d spent in Miles’ arms, pretending that it was just a friendship-thing? When had he ever felt the need to sleep in Matt’s arms? Or Jamie’s? Or Nick’s? Hell, when had he ever desperately desired to sleep in Taylor’s arms? None of them would have ever even allowed him into their beds, or arms. None, except Taylor. Because Taylor had loved him. But not as a friend!
Miles had always opened his arms for him, Alex realized. Without any hesitation. He’d held him, squeezed him, kissed him, caressed him, even sucked him and fucked him and none of that had felt platonic! Alex came to a stop, held onto his desk and closed his eyes. He remembered those kisses, remembered the way Miles had deepened their contact, had groaned and moaned into his mouth, had sighed in pleasure and begged in need.
Miles had told him they were different, but they weren’t. Not that different. Alex tried to recall his own romantic escapades, tried to recall what he had felt then, but those brief affairs and one night stands that he used to have were all pale and dim compared to the fireworks and explosions he’d experienced with Miles. The ones that had come before Miles didn’t matter to him. They had never left him drowning in want. They had never made him feel loved, the way Miles had made him feel loved. They had never made him surrender completely.
Images of Miles’ face flashed in front of Alex’s eyes. Images from their night. Images of Miles staring at Alex with complete and utter fascination, as though Alex was a living, breathing miracle and Miles was overwhelmed by his beauty. No one had ever looked at him like that.
That fucking hurt!
And how could Miles have been hurt by Alex if there were no feelings which could have gotten hurt? If Miles had wanted him there when he had woken up that night, then he couldn’t have been disgusted by him! And if the attraction was still there, as Miles had told him, as he had demonstrated by kissing him again, then he didn’t regret it. Did he? If the only reason it couldn’t happen again was the risk of losing their friendship, it meant Miles absolutely didn’t regret it!
We’ve always pretended that all we did was play around.
So if they hadn’t pretended, if they hadn’t played around, if everything had been real, then…
Could it be?
I’d never risk losing you for a bit of sex.
If Miles hadn’t risked it for a bit of sex, he had risked it for something more. And more than sex was…love.
Was Miles in love with him? Alex dropped to the chair next to him and just sat there, in silence. Motionless. Was that possible? Did he dare to believe that the one person he loved so wholly might actually love him back? Alex tilted his head to the side, to look at his phone again. Well, he couldn’t really call him and ask him, could he?
Oh God! What was he supposed to do now? Wait until they met again? How long would that take? He couldn’t even go to Miles because he didn’t know where, precisely, Miles was at this very moment. And he couldn’t call and ask Miles, because hearing his voice right now would make speaking entirely impossible and Miles would never just tell him without asking why. What then? Same problem! He couldn’t tell him on the phone. “Fucking hell,” shot Alex and closed his eyes.
Party.
Wait, there was a party. A birthday party. Everyone was invited, Miles had said so. That meant Alex was invited as well, right? But whose party was it? He needed to call somebody other than Miles for details. Victoria! He could call Victoria! Alex jumped up, grabbed the phone from his bed and – then stopped. It was already midnight. He couldn’t call her now. That would be strange. And it would raise flags. Victoria would then call Miles, who, in return, would call Alex. Voila, back to problem one. Fucking phones!
He’d do it tomorrow. He’d find a way to explain it to her.
Tomorrow. Oh, tomorrow was so very far away.
And it’d be days until he saw Miles. Days!
Alex sank down on the bed and laid back again.
Days!
He’d never last that long.
Spoiler for Part 14:
“Fuck talking,” declared Alex.
“Fuck me,” said Miles.

(I really don't want to have to write in the whole Andy and Nick thing so we're going to act like it was Nick all along, ok? Cool.)
I pulled around to the front and watched him carefully examine the different bins, careful as to which one to put the plastic cup into. He tossed it into the plastics bin and scanned the car park for my car.
I wasn't sure if he remembered what my car looked like, so I honked my horn. His head perked up, and he walked over to my car, running his fingertips along the boot and down the side of the car, pulling the door open and shutting it careful as to not the door slam.
"My mum hates slamming doors," he started off the conversation. As do I. "So, what are we wanting to do here, Al" I returned his gaze. "...no ones ever called me Al. I like it; " he stated in an even more chipper mood than before. "Wanna just...drive?" He shrugged, looking out the windshield at the swaying tree-lined street. "Always," I said, reaching across him into the glove box to pull out my sticker plastered CD case. "Aha, what does she listen to then?" He leaned over my shoulder to examine my collection, something I was rather proud of.
Some of the CDs including: The Strokes, Nancy Sinatra, Dr Dre, and David Bowie. I took a lot of pride in not having a particular taste and being open to new music. "I love Dr. Dre; " he exclaimed. "Whats... this...?" he pulled 'Is This It' by the strokes from the case and opened it, sliding it into the stereo, then skipping to 8 songs in. Combating his action with a simple favourite number. Hard to explain began to play through the speakers of the car. Oh, right, this CD skips the beg-

When we go back,
As the song went on, Alex started to pick up the melody of the song and began to hum along. The song finished as I pulled out of the car park. I stopped the CD and handed Alex the Dr. Dre 2001 CD, "Xxplosive;" I stated as he clicked the CD out of its case. "Sure you don't want 'Pause 4 Porno'?" He elbowed me, giggling like a schoolboy.
"Absolutely positive sir, need me to stop anywhere, maybe somewhere for you to change, maybe take a quick shower since you just worked...inside a McDonalds?" I gave him a sort of side-eye, though joking, he smelled like fast food. "You sure? I live all the way in High Green..." he questioned. "Yeah, it's not a problem." I shrugged, leaving the city. "My flatmates might be home. They're kind of obnoxious, but they're my best mates." He moved his eyes to his lap, nodding his head to the beat of the song.
We pulled onto the main road as Alex guided me to 68 Sundew Gardens. A boy with big curly hair and tracky bottoms sat on a white chair in the driveway nursing a beer. "Matthew! This is y/n, don't make her uncomfortable or she'll take your place on my friends tier list" Matt raised his head from examining a video camera, presumably trying to figure it out.
"Hey, nice name." His head dropped back down as he walked into the house, mumbling under his breath. "Damn thing, fucking mystery." Alex opened the door to the house, allowing me into the air conditioning and introducing me to the rest of the boys. "Thats the sitting room, that's Jamie, and that's Nick." Alex introduced them as if they were just part of the house. They waved at me, not looking away from the telly.
"Umm, you could wait in my room while I shower?" He turned back to me from the steps. I nodded and followed him up the steps. I looked around at the state of his room as he rummaged through his drawers. My mum always told me you could tell a lot about a person by how they lived. His bed was made but not neatly, almost as if he did it because someone told him to or it was a habit, definitely not something he wanted to do.
A white fender guitar in the room's corner caught my eye. "You play guitar?" I questioned, causing his attention to be turned back to me. "Yes, well, no, sort of. I got it for Christmas just a few months ago before I moved out of my parents' house. I know a few chords, but I can't seem to figure it out."
He looked back at his drawer towards the end of the sentence. I could sense his embarrassment. "Do you play?" He asked back, being polite. "Yeah, I grew up with music being the centre of my life, so I learned when I was about 13, I can teach you?" He smiled at me, seeming open to the idea "... only if you want to, though" I added onto the end, making it easier for him to say something back. "Yeah, anything to spend more time with you" and with that, he was out the door into the bathroom.
I sat there in his room looking at his posters and noting things like the cigarettes on his dresser and the glass soda bottle collection on his shelf. "Whatcha doin?" He came into the room with a towel barely hanging off his waist. "Just getting to know you. What happened to your clothes?" I raised an eyebrow at him teasingly, knowing he had taken clothes with him.
"Didn't like the outfit... also, I'm an attention whore." He giggled, looking back through his drawers. "I can tell, but that's okay, so am I." I laughed back. "Just didn't think my outfit was on par with yours." He nodded to my denim cut-offs, lavender flower embroidered tank top, and knee socks. "Here, you pick out my outfit" he grabbed my hand and dragged me to the dresser, making me remember he was only in a towel.
I looked through his clothes and noticed he only had jeans. "It's summer, you only have jeans, I have nothing to work with here" I turned to him accidentally looking at his chest for a little too long. "I see the attention stunt is working;" he smirked at me, squinting his eyes. I cleared my throat and just looked back to his clothes, finding a single pair of black 5-inch inseam shorts and a Led Zeppelin t-shirt.
"Ah-ha, why this is perfect, you'll look darling" I exaggerated my accent, shoving the clothes into his chest. "Y/n love, I don't have the legs for shorts;" he said, tilting his head down at me. "Embrace it, Al, you'll be dandy," I said, pushing him out the door into the bathroom to get changed. He came back into the room, his hair beginning to fluff up again. He was exaggerating by miles. His legs looked fine. "Alexander, you look perfect" he gave me a disgusted look and looked down at his legs. "I'm scrawny y/n/n," he breathed out. "You're not, you're cute." I smiled, causing him to blush, something I brushed off, not wanting to further his embarrassment.
"Whatever, I'm ready to leave when you are," I mused, "so ...now then." He said, pivoting on his heel and walking out of the room, me following.
"Heading out now, boys, dont know what time I'll be back. No parties, no impromptu stair sledding, and absolutely no roof drinking." He gave the boys in the living room a stern look. "Okay, mum." Matt jested. "yeah, alright," he mumbled, walking out the door.

Evening Standard, 5 April 2018: Ahead of his first solo album in five years, we get up close and personal with Miles Kane
He’s the frontman of one of Britain’s most successful bands, and Alex Turner’s best mate...
I’m interviewing Miles Kane in the velvet gloom of Quo Vadis’s members-only Blue Room, but he’d much rather be in a bar.
Not because the Glastonbury-playing, model-dating guitarist wants to be slamming tequila, you understand, but because this peaceful and cosy room is just too damn quiet.
A table of chattering espresso-sippers has just left and Kane is not happy. His voice drops as he half buries himself in the corner of the velvet banquette. ‘Sometimes I prefer speaking in a bar, you know where it’s noisy,’ he whispers. He looks a little forlorn. ‘It’s kind of better that way. A bit of background beats silence.’ There’s an uncomfortable pause. ‘I’ve just made it really awkward now, haven’t I?’
This desire to be surrounded by the voices of others makes sense in a lot of ways because Kane has, for much of his time in the public eye, been mainly known for the people he hangs out with. His best friend is Alex Turner, globally renowned indie frontman of Arctic Monkeys. His first two solo albums featured the likes of Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher and tunes written by Turner. Romantically, he’s been linked to models and It girls galore — Suki Waterhouse, Laura Whitmore and Rosie Fortescue (more of which later). With Turner, again, he formed ‘supergroup’ The Last Shadow Puppets while Arctic Monkeys was on a break. Most recently he’s been in Beatles covers band Dr Pepper’s Jaded Hearts Club, alongside Muse’s Matt Bellamy and Blur’s Graham Coxon.
Kane plays down his reputation as a schmoozer. ‘I just hang out with my mates, go to the pub, do a bit of boxing, chill and sing, you know what I mean?’ Besides, after five year’s hanging out in LA with Turner (‘Al’) and his other famous friends, Kane’s striking out on his own again, with a new solo album tentatively called Coup de Grace, due out at the end of the summer. The elegant French poetry of the title is actually a reference to his favourite WWE wrestler (Kane himself has never tried it, but ‘I’d be amazing at it!’), the demonically body painted Finn Bálor, whose closing move — a diving double foot stomp from the ropes — is known as his coup de grace.
More death metal than poetry, then, but the songs themselves are a lyric-heavy change from his old stuff. Again, he’s collaborating with big names, this time Lana Del Rey (‘we’ve written a lot of songs together. One of them is on this album, and it’s f***ing great’) and Noughties hero Jamie T (‘it was amazing, in the first week we did about three tunes just in my apartment’) on songs which are ‘just so upbeat and sort of punky’, with ‘a lot of words, which I don’t usually do — that was what Jamie T was sort of encouraging me on’.
He’s also about to launch another collaboration, a 10-piece capsule collection with menswear brand Fred Perry. ‘I’ve always loved my clothes,’ he says earnestly. The collection, his second with Fred Perry (a third is already on the cards), features ‘super plain’ Cuban bowling shirts and ‘classic’ tracksuits. Is music or fashion more important to him? ‘It’s hard that. I’ve got to go music, but it’s close.’
After all, he couldn’t just abandon his 15-year career in indie rock, which kicked off at the age of 18 — at exactly the same time as Turner. Kane grew up in the Wirral, the son of a butcher (his mum) and a café owner (his dad) and was performing in band The Little Flames when Turner was just starting out in Monkeys. They ended up gigging at the same pubs and as the Monkeys’ fame exponentially grew, Kane found himself, with new band The Rascals, supporting Turner on tour (Kane has been quoted as claiming that the reason he himself never joined Monkeys was because ‘I really wanted to be a frontman at that time. I hadn’t been a frontman. I had a hard-on for that’).
When Kane left The Rascals in 2009 to reinvent himself as a solo artist, Turner was there to co-write half the tracks on Kane’s album Colour of the Trap, released in 2011. His second solo album in 2013, Don’t Forget Who You Are, was written during the break-up of his relationship with model Suki Waterhouse. He’s since been linked with Laura Whitmore and Rosie Fortescue and today he refers obliquely to ‘a dramatic break-up that sort of drained me a bit’, in late 2016. So, how’s his love life now? He winces. ‘I’m single at the moment, yeah. I mean we could go there but I don’t know if I want to.’
It’s been Kane’s time in The Last Shadow Puppets with Turner that has propelled him into the spotlight. Their first album in 2008, The Age of the Understatement, went straight to No1 and had them playing Glastonbury with Jack White; indeed, both times Arctic Monkeys have headlined the Pyramid Stage, Turner has invited Kane onstage for an impromptu jam. The second Shadow Puppets album, Everything You’ve Come To Expect released in 2016, however, cast Kane in a slightly less favourable light — not only was the music less well received but an interview Turner and Kane gave to Spin webzine journalist Rachel Brodsky went viral after Kane asked her, mid-interview, to join him in his hotel room and gave her a ‘not entirely consensual kiss on the cheek’.
Brodsky wrote about how uncomfortable she felt and Kane was forced to publicly apologise. Such an incident might have proved career-ending had it happened in this post-#MeToo era; even the limited outcry at the time has left Kane wary. It was ‘a sense of humour miscommunication, you know what I mean?’ he squirms. Will the music industry be the next to expose sexual predation? ‘It’s horrendous, know what I mean? That’s all I can say.’
With Turner fully reimmersed in Arctic Monkeys — their hugely anticipated sixth album is out in May (Kane has heard it but ‘can’t talk about it’) — Kane has had ample time to move out of his best friend’s shadow with Coup de Grace. Sure, he’s annoyed about the timing of NME’s recent print demise — ‘I wanted to be on the cover for this album so I’m gutted, yeah’ — but when it comes to individual recognition, Kane is philosophical.
‘We’re lucky to still be able to be doing it. I guess I’m grateful for that.’ He pauses. ‘When you think about it, I’m not on the level they are by any stretch of the imagination. I’ve still got a very long way to go in my career. Hopefully, you get to where you want to go.’
Miles Kane x Fred Perry launches 10 May

I agree that Matt's starting to become insufferable ……….
Oh no I’m so sorry you experienced this. I met him in 2014 after the staples center show in LA. I’m from central LA so I’ve seen them a few times. In 2014 my friend wanted a smoke and we were at a bar after the show (this is not a fancy bar !) and they were in the smoke pit. I SWEAR Alex looked annoyed when he saw a group of us guys and girls in am Shirts walk in but the two guys I was with had motorcycles and when they chatted about it his face changed and was hanging out chilling with us. I don’t smoke but I never wanted to leave the smoke pit. Matt was so nice. Nick and Jamie were inside. Then we met them again at the Hollywood forever cemetery backstage because my friend catered at the venue and she got a pass. I met Taylor too. I got a hug from bearded Alex and I’ve held on to that memory lLOL!!!! He asked my name twice because it’s hard to pronounce and I swear when he leaned in asking I died. I remember Matt was really talkative to my friends too. Maybe you met them at shit times when he was off. I was also at the ace theater show with Alex and Miles but they took off before the fans swarmed! And Alex wasn’t having it with the fans after that show so maybe it was the same with you on those days.
hi thank you for this story this mod would like to follow up on a personal obsession which is did you happen to see Alexandra Savior after the Staples Center show because I would give at least a toe to learn the story behind the below pic from the same night
Tumblr media
if not that’s cool thank you anyway
PS can we also poll the class on the practice of wearing the shirt of the band you’re going to see because growing up I was always told this was profoundly uncool but it seems to be an accepted practice these days and I don’t know what to think

Chapter IV - Four Out Of Five
“Today is not just a day of celebration. It’s a day of gratitude. It’s a day where we realize our accomplishments were not only made by ourselves, but through the support of the people around us. When I built this hotel, I vowed to each of my guests that they would always have a room here, that they could place their trust in me. And in turn, I placed my trust in them. Without you, my guests, my friends, my family, I wouldn’t have been able to host this gathering. Because of you, this hotel got an exceptional rating that made not only our staff proud, but the entire country.”
There was a round of applause echoing through the large room, while a few local reporters took the moment to snap a few pictures. It quieted down again when Alex cleared his throat and raised his hand.
“I especially wanted to thank someone in particular. She is unfortunately no longer with us, but we will always remember her as one of our most esteemed guests who visited this hotel since it first opened. She’d written me a personal letter saying she had this wonderful young man who was very willing to come and work for me, who I now see as one of my most trusted employees. I am so grateful to have known her and am honoured to have her daughter remembering her amongst us tonight.”
He raised his glass, along with everyone else in the room, and held a toast to her mother’s name. All she could do was play along with a frown. Alex Turner was not the man she’d expected him to be. It all felt very forced.
“This hotel… It might hibernate from time to time, sink back into the swamp. I think the cyclical nature of the universe in which it exists demands that acquiesce to some of its rules. But we’re always waiting there, just around the corner, ready to make our way back through the sludge and smash through the glass ceiling, looking better than ever. And there’s nothing you can do about it. Have a nice night, cheers.”
The last part of his speech seemed oddly specific and she could tell it was a pointed remark. She just wasn’t sure who it was directed towards. Turner didn’t wait for the second round of applause to get off the stage, instead opting to immediately grab a flute of champagne from a tray one of the waiters was holding. “He can be so dramatic sometimes,” someone to her right chuckled.
Glancing over, her eyes found the face of a man she’d probably describe to have the most British face ever. Not unattractive in any way, his hair cut short and his hazel eyes locking hers in a warm and kind-hearted sort of embrace that made her feel immediately at ease. “You’re Miles Kane,” she blurted out. He smiled, “Correct. And you must be the ‘honoured’ guest I’ve been hearing so much about.”
“Only good things, I hope,” she said with a strained chuckle. “Only good things,” he winked. The corners of her mouth quirked up. She now understood why people chose him to be mayor, even if it was only because of his charisma. “I presume you already knew about the hotel review as well?” she continued curiously. He nodded, “They asked me to give a bit of a statement for the papers. Alex told me beforehand, though.” She hummed in interest, while her thoughts wandered back to that morning where she’d only then found out about the cause of the night’s celebration.
She’d casually strolled into the dining hall where most tables had either been removed or pushed against the walls of the room. At the back, the big stage had been cleared out and now only held a microphone and a few chairs. “You look happy today,” she commented, taking a seat at their usual spot. Matt looked up at her, silently sipping his coffee as he slid a newspaper towards her.
‘The Grand Tranquility Hotel was well reviewed; rated an exemplary four stars out of five. Mayor Kane states his joy, proclaiming “it’s unheard of.”’
She smiled, “That’s fantastic! Congratulations, Matthew.” Matt waved his hand bashfully at her. “So, that’s what the whole ‘gathering’ is about. Did you already know about all of this?” “I did,” he answered, “I’m sorry we didn’t tell you, miss. Mister Turner was pretty set on keeping things private until everything was set to go.” “That’s quite alright,” she replied. However, deep down she knew the predominant reason why no one had told her, thinking back to the argument she’d had with the hotel owner just the night before. They didn’t trust her, no matter how kind they were being.
“Speaking of, how are the preparations getting along?” she wondered. Matt sighed and set his fork which was still piercing a heaping amount of eggs back down on his plate. “In all honesty, miss, there’s still so much that has to be done. Nick is out looking for more temporary personnel after some cancelled at the last minute, Jamie’s preparing everything in the kitchen and you already know what kind of chaos it’s like when he’s stressed and I’m just making a list of the things I still need to figure out before the gathering. We’re not used to doing this sort of thing with a limited amount of staff, so we’re all a bit disconcerted.”
She glanced down at the notepad he had been scribbling on. “Then allow me to help. I might not be an expert party planner, but half of the things you’ve mentioned on there I can manage.” Matt shook his head, but before he could protest, she shot him a strict look. “Look, I’m offering you my services here, like you offered yours. I won’t tell mister Turner a thing and if he does find out for some reason, I’ll just tell him I was helping a friend out.” He smiled at that. “Alright then,” he finally agreed, “But you’ll have to promise me Alex doesn’t notice anything.”
And with that, she spent the afternoon moving furniture, decorating, dusting, vacuuming, tidying and all the works. She’d even aided Jamie after he’d had a breakdown over accidentally burning the cake that was sitting in the smoking oven. Using one of her mother’s trusted recipes, she’d baked him a new one that had tiers, icing and everything while he continued working on the appetizers. It resulted in him spinning her around and giving her a big kiss on the cheek.
She glanced over where her creation now stood proud and tall on a pedestal. Well, proud and tall with heaping chunks missing from it. “Jamie really outdid himself this time,” Miles commented, taking a bite of the sponge on his plate, “This cake is the best I’ve ever had.” She didn’t argue with him, because she felt Jamie deserved more credit for his work. Even if it wasn’t exactly his.
Her eyes roamed over the assorted crowd. They were what she’d expected them to be; stereotypically ritzy and exuding money. She wondered if that’s why Matt, Nick and Jamie were so adamant on letting her know she was too kind to them, because all other folks they had to deal with were like these. They weren’t the type of people to have a normal chat. Oh no, these were the personas who whispered and were opinionated about everything. When you’re so filthy rich you only hang out with the wealthy who are as impeccable as you, all forms of judgement you’ve got left is directed nit-picking and slanderous gossip.
She heard people comment on her dress, hair, makeup, she could name it all. But none who reported it directly to her. It was just loud enough so she would think it was a whisper and she wouldn’t be sure who it was from.
It was while wandering around when she finally heard comments that weren’t being made about her, but about something that most definitely interested her.
She reached for a glass from a waiter and smiled to him in thanks as she casually pretended to look for someone in the crowd while her ears picked up the conversation happening behind her.
“You know what I think?” A woman muttered, “I think this whole night is just a charity cause. He’s trying to petty us into giving him funds so he can continue his bland excuse of a hotel.” Another man  joined in, “I don’t think that’s true. Did you hear his speech? He’s trying to cover up the fact he’s going bankrupt. His little act of intimidation was rather mournful, though.”
“He’s trying to cover up a lot of things, from what I’ve heard,” the same woman stated as a matter-of-factly. She let a short, yet effective pause draw out to spark their interest, before she continued. “A little birdie told me that the poor fellow got his heart broken. Got addicted to gambling because of it, lost all his funding and then some in one night.” They gasped dramatically, and she’d heard enough.
Like the person who had been observing her from across the room, had seen enough.
She came across Matt as she moved towards the exit, who gave her a questioning look, to which she simply responded that she was tired from everything the day had brought her. “I understand, ma’am,” he said, before he gave a small smile, “I can’t explain how grateful I am-“ “Don’t worry,” she interrupted him, “Like I said, I was just helping out a friend.” She gave his arm a kind squeeze.
He called after her, “Oh, if you see Alex, tell him I’m looking for him! I’ve been finding too many empty glasses where I’ve seen him.”
As she closed the door of the hall behind her, a wave of silence washed over her like a cold breeze. She had a headache and she was sure it wasn’t because of the champagne. A walk would do her some good.
It was as if her feet had known what she was thinking, because she found herself in front of the picture with her mother in it. She actually found some of the faces to be familiar now, probably through having passed them during the party. Her eyes moved back to inspect the man between Matt and Jamie. It was a gut feeling that told her she should find out more about this particular person.
She heard the shuffling of feet beside her, but she’d half-expected the noise so she didn’t even flinch. “Got enough material for your book?” He slurred.
She blinked at Alex, the little respect she’d held for him slowly but surely dripping away like water from a tap that’s been leaking. “How could I have enough material when you won’t even tell me anything about your bloody hotel?” she shot back.
He scoffed, leaning against the wall. He clearly wasn’t sober enough to keep his balance. “You don’t need me to find out about all the details now, do you? You’ve clearly been making your own assumptions through the stories from my loyal guests.”
She raised her brows in surprise as she took a daring step towards him. “Have you been spying on me?”
“Being able to observe people is a real writer’s trait, is it not? Always keen on finding the truth, even when it’s been covered by decades of dust and grime. It’s what makes for a good book.” He pushed himself forward until he was directly in front of her. He smelled like cigarettes and expensive whiskey. “The only thing you’ve done so far is brush the surface of that grave. You’re just another cheap journalist looking for a good story to get your job back.”
His words stung and before she knew it, so did her hand.
She really hadn’t meant to slap him. She wasn’t one to slap people. Yet, it had been her body’s first instinct. It was as if a gravitational force had pulled her palm to his cheek in a very violent way. She could’ve just held his face for all she knew, if it hadn’t been for the anger rushing through her in that particular moment, inducing her decision-making to be more erratic.
He almost didn’t seem fazed at all. He just looked at her. And in the flicker of a moment, she thought she’d seen an ounce of remorse in his eyes. It was right before they turned stone cold again.
“Leave,” he hissed. She was at a loss for words. When he got no response, he audibly made his request clearer. “Leave. You’ll pack your things. And you’ll be leaving, tonight.”
“She’s not going anywhere,” a voice proclaimed from behind him. She turned to look at Matthew, who was joined by Jamie and a distressed-looking Nick. Miles stepped out from the hall as well, closing the doors behind him to give them some form of privacy.
“Our guest has decided to shorten her stay with us,” Alex stated, his eyes not leaving hers, “If you could take her to the train station in a bit, Matthew.”
“The hour is late, Alex. There won’t be a train till morning,” Matt simply replied. “Then you can drive her all the way back home, if you must,” Alex snarled, while running a hand through his dark hair.
“I’m sorry, Alex. But she’s staying.”
Matt didn’t hold his usual backtalk. It seemed he was more tired and disappointed than angry. When Alex realized none of his friends were going to take his side, - not even Miles made a comment - he stormed back into the dining hall and slammed the door. She could distantly hear him yelling, telling everyone the party’s over. When he was done and people started shuffling out, he disappeared around a corner.
She noticed Matt’s jaw clench as Miles let out a deep sigh. “I think it’s best if I stay around for a while,” he simply said. As Nick led him to the front desk to hand him a key, Matt placed an arm around her shoulder while his eyes remained directed towards the same hallway Alex had drunkenly stumbled off through. “Come on, miss. Let’s get you back to your room. It’s been a long night.”

forever isn’t for everyone (is forever for you) part 8
We hit the ground running and there's no time to be awkward around Alex. Not when I'm always rushing about, trying to confirm and pin down people and rushing into the bus after a show.
The states are huge. With long distances to cover between shows, the scenery passing us by in the dark. Ben’s knowledge of it all comes in handy, leading us to our if the way places with good food and he keeps the drinks coming.
I barely get a chance to realize I'm in Canada before we're getting back on the tour bus and it's not long before I'm taking a drag from the joints that get liberally passed around out of sheer boredom.
There's only so much to do on the road, couped up in a bus with a bunch of  techies. Lucy laughs at my sad attempts to play blackjack and I can only laugh along with her.
It's a good thing that there's two tour buses. I don't think I could stand to be couped up with Alex. If he wanted to avoid me then I'd do him a favor and avoid him as well. My gaze passing over him as all of us sat down late at night as we pulled into New York city, a free day from a concert but a press day all the same.
Jaime finds out from Lucy that I'm terrible at blackjack and grins as he wins american bills from me, laughing easily, Miles taking the blunt of the attention off of a band that hates all the bells and whistles that come along with being successful. "aren't you supposed to be good with money," he jokes as he wins for the fourth time in a row as we wrap up a shoot, the sun having set while we spent the day with the press.
I was starving. Fruit platters were not enough. I giggle, "that's not all economics is! and it's a card game. Not my fault i'm still getting the hang of it."
"You didn't play it at uni," Nick asks with a grin, having successfully extracted a number off the shoots stylist.
"No. At least I didn't. I was too busy getting a degree unlike some people I know," I reply looking at them both meaningfully. We'd settled in with each other easily by now.
Jamie shrugs shamelessly, "rather be a rockstar than have to go to uni."
" 'fink I would've dropped out," Nick muses.
"We'll see who has the last laugh when your on some reality show for washes up rock stars in ten years," I retort back with a grin.
"That soon," Nick snorts. "Give us at least twenty years."
The famous skyline passes by us as we head out to meet the others and we never steal a glimpse at the statue of liberty before were hauling ass to Detroit and a plethora of other cities never mentioned in movies.
And if I can sometimes feel Alex's stare on me, I force myself to ignore it, losing myself in the drinks and Lucy rambling on about one of her many pet peeves. Tonight's being the fact that men are disgusting and can't keep anything clean and would it kill them to keep their dirty clothes off the floor, "I swear I can't even see the tour bus floor anymore!"
"It'll get better when we do laundry," I offer before she's off again. Laundry won't get done until we leave for the first european leg. There's no breaks in between.
Mum complains that I'll miss my sisters eighteenth birthday but it can't be helped. Hopefully all the trinkets I've been collecting from tour will make up for it once I send the package before it fills up all my suitcase.
In the blink of an eye, we're in Salt lake City, having made our way across the country in a way I could've only dreamed of and I know I made the right choice when I took the job.
"Told you you'd fall into it," Ben utters, wrapping an arm around me with a carefree smile before he's off giving directions and tell some techie to load up on alcohol because their weird about it in Utah.
I shake my head.
"He's right though isn't he," Lucy grins, a joint in hand and Miles beside her, bits of glitter from yesterday's show still stuck on his skin. The sunset just makes the panorama look even more gorgeous that it is. The mountains in the distance and the intensity of the green surrounding us.
"Yeah Ellie," Miles grins, charming as ever, "bet those wankers who took on," he pretends to straighten up a tie, "very proper jobs are about ready to knell over and die."
I snort, taking a drag of the joint. Oh what my parents would say if they knew how much weed and alcohol I'd been having lately. I might have not done much in uni but I was more than making up for it now. "
Hey they get bank holidays," I joke, running a hand through my hair and wondering if this was the kind of panorama all those english romantics had been on about, "meanwhile I have to put up with your ugly mug!"
"Oi," Miles grins back sharply, "NME called me an indie dreamboat."
"Lucy must have bribed them."
Lucy throws her head back, bursting into laughter, "come on I'm starving and Ben said there's a mexican place with bottomless mimosas today since they don't sell alcohol on sundays."
"What the fuck," Miles shouts, before shaking his head, "this is why no one likes americans."
As promised there are bottomless mimosas which Miles plows his way threw with glee. The techies are already at the venue, having an early start the next day. The grueling schedule means no nice hotels and I miss the meandering pace we had down under.
Jamie doesn't let the lack of dance floor stop him roping Lucy along, our group causing a ruckus between the food and drinks and Miles being Miles, clamping Matt on the back as he shares stories that have to be wildly exaggerated.
There's just no way he'd had a threesome with Jack and Meg White not matter how loudly he said it was true as Matt kept rolling his eyes.
I drink and flint in and out of the conversation, the lion share of my work having been finished on the bus. Watching as Matt sneaks off with a pretty girl.
We were technically supposed to stop any of that monkey business before a concert, but Matt was good about making his way back unlike Miles who'd we'd lost in Montreal, the language barrier not helping.
It had been Alex who'd found him in the end, playing with some street musicians.
Alex joins in, playing along with Miles as they both get completely trashed, Miles glomping onto Alex's side like a damsel in distress while Alex laughs.
Despite what's happened between us, I still find myself stealing glances when I can, when the rooms dark and he's not holed up on the bands bus, waking up late in the day and dominating Miles attention.
As if he could hear my thoughts, Alex looks over at me catching my gaze, his eyes still holding the same warmth of a hot cuppa in winter.
I look away, letting Lucy pull me along with her and Jamie who's gone ruddy red as he dances badly. It's all  the push I need to dance with them.
Tomorrow I'd have a killer hangover, but tonight Lucy and Jamie were both mouthing along to Poker Face and that was too good not to get caught up in.
