11/30: Full steam ahead

We return to Body Desecrator 2093, Prometheus. There were no post this weekend because I felt like it. Now I feel like it even less, because it’s this scene.
The horrors do not end here. The movie hasn’t even got to what it considers horrors, but I’d already screamed quietly at the screen by this point several times, so it’s safe to say that me and the movie were not simpatico.
There are times when a movie will do things that fall entirely outside your personal beliefs or understanding of logic, and you just roll with it. Magical realism does this all the time, as do movies reaching for the psychedelic. 2001: A Space Odyssey eventually dissolves reality itself around the protagonist as he travels through another dimension. On the first sit, you have no way of knowing what you’ll be shown next, but if the movie’s got you, then you go with it.
Then there are movies where everyone is acting according to some sort of logic, but it feels twisted, like things are happening for a reason, but the logic doesn’t connect. Horror movies love this, particularly ones with cultic antagonists–Midsommar being the most notable modern example, and the original Wicker Man being another.
I mean, the Nick Cage movie also has that, but sometimes it has that because Nick Cage is in a bear costume, punching a woman in the face and stealing bicycles at gunpoint like he’s in GTA.
Prometheus, unfortunately, unintentionally places itself somewhere between the two Wicker Men. The characters’ decision making is a shambolic mess. The movie intentionally invokes religious fervor in Shaw especially, and might intentionally invoke that plus megalomania in Holloway, but it doesn’t draw a line around those characters and their bad decisions. Everyone is just going with their bullshit. This suggests to the audience that in the movie’s world all scientists behave like this.
I mean, in our world, scientists sometimes try to fit entire oranges in their mouths (source), but I should like to think that The Orange Incident wouldn’t have happened if that guy had been on board the most important scientific expedition in human history.
Things just kept happening in this movie that made me feel like I was dissociating. The cast is back at the Prometheus, with their stolen artifacts and mortal remains. Cool. They need to be decontaminated. Like, inside and out.
Next, we see Shaw and Holloway in a lab, along with Maybe-Chemist-Lady whose name fell right out of my head as I watched, because she’s never given a character to speak of. They are wearing scrubs, hairnets, and blue surgical masks, which tells me the movie thinks this is appropriate personal protective equipment for handling an alien head. Holloway is sitting on a counter in the corner, getting drunk.
So many things have just hit me here. How long is this since they got back? Apparently no more than a couple hours. These people took their helmets off in an active alien biosphere, with worms in the dirt and an alien corpse on the ground and who knows what else. They should be quarantined forever, or at least for a couple weeks.
When the Apollo 11 crew got back to Earth, they were quarantined for 21 days. NASA didn’t consider it likely that anything lived on the moon, but they were taking no chances. Here’s Nixon getting a chance to see what good people look like!
But no! No quarantine for Prometheus! The guys who breathed moon dust? Into the quarantine trailer. The people who stuck their faces near an alien corpse? Nah! It’s all good!
What about the head they looted from the structure? These people already got a dramatic reminder that altering the conditions around sensitive artifacts can cause them to degrade. I’ve already rambled at length about how NASA still sterilizes their equipment to not contaminate anywhere probes are sent to. Hell, as a geneticist, I can tell you that there is a very strict hierarchy of sample isolation and biosafety deployed when it’s appropriate–either you work fucking hard to protect the samples from you, or you work hard to protect yourself from the sample.
But the crew of the Prometheus have scanned the head with a little light and declared “Sample is sterile. No contagion present”, which is an odd thing to declare now, after they already breathed all over it. Trusting their all-knowing (and wrong) computer, they take their surgical masks off. Fully sealed suits? A glovebox? Even movies show people using a glovebox sometimes!
NOPE! HAIRNETS AND A LABCOAT, LET’S GO
Do we kick out Shaw’s boyfriend who’s in his casual clothes? NAH, LET THE MAN BE COMFY. Are we going to pry the bottle away from him, because bringing drinks into a lab breaks basic safety standards? Standards that I’ve only ever seen broken by one place that also allowed open-toe sandals in a lab where boiling hot gel and mutagenic chemicals were regularly mixed? NOPE, LET HIM HAVE HIS BOOZE, HE’S SAD HE DIDN’T GET TO MEET GOD.
Don’t worry, that one lab doesn’t do the sandal thing anymore. And Holloway will pay for his crimes against laboratory safety.
But I can't stress enough how utterly uncanny this scene felt, unintentionally on the part of the movie. Every decision felt wrong. Everything everyone was doing, saying, and wearing was wrong. They’re not even wearing the right kind of gloves! They should at minimum be wearing nitrile gloves! They’re wearing PVC gloves, which have stupid high leakage rates, even if you double-glove! They’re not even more comfortable than nitrile gloves! This is my nittest of picks, I know! I’m doing it anyway!
The movie had lost me, but part of me was still hoping it would come back around, that something in it would be the movie I’d thought it would be.
Next time: the movie will not do that, and I will, paradoxically, find myself in more of the frame of mind the movie seems to want from the audience: not giving a shit about its characters.
Stay tuned for some bonus workplace hazards below the citations.

Alright, let’s behold some images from my institute’s safety training module on compressed gas cylinders. Please note, these were not taken at my institute, these are probably the result of the team finding cursed images they wanted to inflict on their coworkers and us.
This was how they chose to communicate the idea of “don’t let canisters heat up, or they might explode”. How else might they explode? If the canister becomes old and corroded, develops any other sort of fault, or is stored improperly, especially near cylinders of other kinds. Like so!
This is the least bombastic of the images, but it exudes a quiet menace and/or the promise that Video Game Physics are imminent.
What do I mean by Video Game Physics? Glad you asked!
Terrifying yet also compelling! Finally, here’s a video from that most terrifying of places, a Russian highway.
youtube
Video description, which I realize I haven’t been doing up to this point and now I want to: A GazpromTech company truck carrying unsecured acetylene tanks passes a motorist on a separated highway at high speed. On the side of it, “ОГНЕОПАСНО” (“FLAMMABLE”) is briefly visible as it rockets by. It makes no to minimal attempt to slow down as a bus enters its lane, rear-ending it. The viewpoint car skids to a stop, and what might be the truck driver can be seen sprinting toward the central barrier of the highway. “Scream & Shout” by will.i.am and Britney Spears can be heard playing on the radio as the viewpoint car tries to back away, complete with an audible “Britney, bitch”. At 0:54 the view cuts to a camera on the other side of the highway, which one commenter estimated as being 200 m away based on the delay between explosions and the sound of the blast reaching the camera.
There are, in fact, MANY explosions from the fireball that has engulfed the truck. A semi tanker is being guided backward away from the explosion, while a blue box truck does the same. A silver sedan, briefly visible in the first angle, is parked within under 50 feet of the truck. Its apparent owner is dithering on whether to try and reach it, eventually deciding, as they should, that this is not worth it. The cameraperson, on the other hand, apparently thinks this is worth it, as do several others in the other lane.
One man is filming on a tablet. Multiple times, canisters and truck shrapnel can be seen rocketing off from the wreck to distances that make it clear everybody in shot is well within decapitation range from these things, especially as explosions fling more burning cylinders onto the roadway. At 1:45, Tablet Man gets the fuck out of there, but our self preservation-less cameraperson remains. At 2:14, a flaming canister in blown clear of the wreck and lands with its bottom end pointing directly toward the cameraperson, who still does not take the hint. Starting at 2:37, the body of the truck is blasted apart, a canister goes flying off past the camera, and a piece of the truck flips and lands on a nearby road sign.
At 3:32 another cut happens and there are more people standing in view of the camera. Are they official emergency crew? Nope! Rubberneckers, although the cop car that’s even closer than them gets a wakeup call when a canister slams into the divider in front of it and tumbles away, still spitting gas. The cop backs up, and the video ends.
End description. Also, end post.

Imagine if you will: A land of ruins - a fallen civilization rests upon these plains and hills. The ruins themselves are of stone and metal, char and rubble, grass and dirt. Hints of gold among the cracked arches, animals wandering through the cities long fallen, trees and flowers flourishing inside and around the collapsed walls...
But this land is not forgotten. Wander long enough and you'll likely meet someone - robed, masked, short and stout folk exploring, dismantling and salvaging whatever they consider useful - always in a group, save for the rare outlier that seems to do something entirely different - hunting.
When I say masked, I don't mean a white, porcelain mask you'd see on actors in a tragic opera, I mean something that looks like a mix between a gas mask and an astronaut helmet. A rounded visor and an air filter, with attached tubes connecting to a machine on the wearer's back - wires, lights, indicators and an air tank. Yet just when you think it might be some kind of life support - you see one of them grab the other's mask and rip it off, cackling with delight whilst the prank victim complains and puts it back on. Turns out they're not vital, but are merely making the people more comfortable up here - a sign of long days of work.
Who are these people? Well... They're Dwarves.
Explore a bit more and you'll find several checkpoints guarding heavily armored doors - entrances to their civilization. Go through and an expansive network of underground tunnels will appear before you - sturdy and industrial. Some trucks move along the roads, hauling salvage down below, others, completely empty, are followed by vans with crews wearing the same uniforms as the folk above - more people heading out to begin their shift. They put on their masks after the inspectors make sure everything is in order (a process that takes around 20 seconds on average, if we don't take into account some casual banter between them).
Meanwhile, some checkpoints serve a different purpose - they're not for the working crews, but instead the outsiders - depending on where in the region you are, you'll see either a transport or two, or heavy traffic through wide, arch-like gates leading to the surface - All of them inspected right before the tunnel roofs conceal the skies above (or the other way around, if they're leaving). These range from simple civilian transports to large, industrial lorries hauling all sorts of goods across the border.
Let's go deeper, then! As the roads go deeper, some of them split, whilst others merge. The smaller off-shoots lead to all manner of areas, though they aren't anything novel or impressive typically. Fuel stations, Garages, guard stations - the like. The bigger roads naturally lead to bigger locations - and more important by association. Moving up on the hierarchy from 'Jim's Wheels' workshops and 'Roadside Upside' stores we find villages and farms where hardy crops and adapted livestock is grown for produce, towns and mines where precious metals and fuels are extracted and later shipped to cities and industrial areas where the raw product is turned and refined into products with quality sought after across and outside the entire continent - for it is of Dwarven origin.
When you want absolute assurance in the quality of materials - you turn to Dwarves. When you want the most reliable equipment - you turn to Dwarves. When you want manpower for construction of critical projects - you turn to Dwarves.
When you want hard work done right, you turn to Dwarves.
You turn to Talamrab.
Talamrab, With it's expansive underground megalopolises and workregions, is a nation of hard-working, skilled folk who make up for their height and with expertise tenfold. You come here to find people who were driven underground long ago by their masters, elves. Their class was deemed unworthy of the surface, for the sun was for the beautiful, elegant nobles and their foreign guests. Over time they adapted to full lives in the depths - tolerance to cold, physiques forged by cave threats and hard work.
At one point they had enough.
Their numbers were bigger, as was their strength and discontent. In a manner of weeks the uprising proved successful as noble, now disgraced Elves were exiled from their former kingdom while the poor, now empowered Dwarves claimed the kingdom they once built for their oppressors. They didn't wish to move back up onto the surface though, spare for a few. Instead, they grew accustomed to the underground - finding it much more comfortable and promising.
Centuries later, those promises held up.

Crazy Catering Units From Around The World
At one time, catering units, be they on the fairgrounds or at private events, tended to be basically a box. Nowadays however there are some really crazy catering units available, so that not only are you getting great food, you also get a centrepiece for your event. We are going to take a look at some of the craziness out there, ranging from pizza's being dispensed by fire engines, to something that looks like its driven straight off the set of Mad Max. MAXImus MiniMUS This is definitely one of our favourites. Resembling some post apocalyptic street food vendor that wouldn't look out of placing serving a burger to Mad Max himself. Build to resemble a pig, with a snout and ears, it was built in 2009 for Kurt Beecher Dammeier, it took its name from the two ranges of food it served, one with a heavy sauce (MAXImus) and a lighter range (MiniMUS). Sadly from what we can see it appears to have closed down in 2017 Maximus Minimus Definitely Post Apocalyptic in Style Baby's Badass Burgers We love this concept, though with the way things seem to be going we are surprised it hasn't been protested. Set up by an ex restaurateur and an event planner, this has a definite attractive lady vibe. With burger names such as Cover Girl, The Other Woman, She's Smoking and The Good Wife, and Burger 'Babes' (attractive female serving staff), to spread the burger goodness. The company now has a number of franchised operations outside of it's home of Los Angeles, so obviously it works well. Babes Burgers Burger 'Babes' Snog Yoghurt A natural frozen yoghurt dessert, sweetened with agave nectar and under 140 calories. What's not to like. So when you need your first mobile store what immediately springs to mind. It's obvious isn't it, an ex London A.E.C. Routemaster bus. Built by a company specialising in luxury bus conversions, the original Snog bus opened in London's Southbank in 2014. Snog Yoghurt Bus The Snog Bus Military Pizza Truck Built into a 6 wheel drive, ex military truck, this is another candidate for catering in the Mad Max era. This one is kitted out as a pizza truck, but maintains it's military colour scheme and feel. It's also available for pretzels, popcorn and various other dessert options. Military Pizza Truck Military Pizza Truck Space Shuttle Cafe This one is an extreme conversion. TBH, I can't see you getting this past the DVLA in this country. It is built to resemble the space shuttle, but it's not a converted commercial vehicle as you would expect, no sir, this one is an actual Douglas DC-3 airplane fuselage, that has been fitted with running gear and an engine. It has a commercial kitchen and rest room built in. Space Shuttle Cafe The Space Shuttle Cafe Pizza Fire Engine This is one of our favourites, so much so that we are actually carrying out a feasibility study to see if it's something we can emulate for our own range of catering options. There are a number of versions plying their catering trade, including a couple of examples in good old Blighty. We particularly like the Company 77 effort, with a working water cannon (good for keeping the queue in order) and a photo booth built into the jump seat. Fire Engine Pizza Truck Various Fire Engine Pizza Trucks Airstream Catering Units Originally built as caravans designed in America in the 1930's. The sleek shape and highly polished aluminium finish is unmistakable. A number of companies make similar models, but Airstream is the oldest. For decades NASA used a modified Airstream trailer to transport astronauts to the launch pad. They have become increasingly popular for use as catering units both in the States and Europe. Airstream Catering Trailer Airstream Trailers Westport Flea Market Burger Van Not strictly a burger van, this is more of a promotional item to advertise the Flea market Bar and Grill. But we included it just because of the sheer quirkiness, and the work that has gone into it. Westport Burger Van Snowcat Burritos If you happen to be skiing in the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, in Sierra Navada, and you are hungry. Then you are in luck, as they have a burrita stall built into an actual snowcat. Well, they actually have two, one serving burritos and the other Calzones. They are also planning to add churros with strawberries and cream. Snowcat Burritos Burritos Snow Cat Keep checking back as we will add more examples as we come across them. Read the full article

Designing for Success: Innovative Restaurant Interior Concepts
Restaurant interior concepts have come a long way in the past few years. Innovative restaurant interiors are popping up everywhere and they're sure to leave you in awe. Whether you're looking to revamp your current restaurant space or just need some inspiration for a new concept, this article post will provide you with some of the most creative and unique restaurant interior concepts. From bold colours to cleverly designed seating, these interiors are sure to make your restaurant stand out from the rest.
These designs can include using materials like reclaimed wood, recycled metals, and eco-friendly fabrics to create a warm and inviting space that feels natural and welcoming. Additionally, energy-efficient lighting, solar panels, and low-flow water fixtures are all great ways to conserve energy and reduce waste.
Restaurants that implement eco-friendly and sustainable designs not only attract customers who are looking to support businesses that prioritise sustainability, but also demonstrate that they care about the health and well-being of their community and the planet.
So, if you're thinking about opening a new restaurant or redesigning your existing space, consider incorporating eco-friendly and sustainable designs into your restaurant interior concepts. Not only will you be doing your part to help the environment, but you'll also create a unique and inviting space that sets your restaurant apart from the competition.
One trend that has been gaining traction in the restaurant industry is modern design. The sleek and simple lines of modern interior design create an uncluttered and sophisticated ambiance, perfect for those who want to relax and enjoy their meals in a refined environment.
One notable feature of modern design is its emphasis on open spaces and natural lighting. Large windows and skylights allow plenty of natural light to flood the interior, while an open floor plan gives diners plenty of room to move around freely.
Modern designs are also known for their use of minimalistic décor and neutral colours. The absence of ornate details and vibrant hues highlights the beauty of simple shapes and textures.
One popular approach to modern interior design is to mix and match materials and textures. Combining raw, natural materials such as wood, stone, and metal with sleek, polished surfaces like glass and steel creates a visually striking effect. This approach to design can create a visually rich and engaging experience for diners.
In addition, minimalistic designs have a timeless quality to them that will keep a restaurant looking stylish and relevant for years to come. This approach is perfect for restaurateurs looking to create a classic and sophisticated atmosphere.
If you want to give your diners an unforgettable experience, try some surprising restaurant themes that are both visually stunning and thought-provoking. Whether you want to create an immersive atmosphere or a playful space, there are plenty of restaurant theme ideas to choose from.
One popular restaurant theme is the jungle or rainforest, which features lush foliage, tropical plants, and animal prints. This concept allows diners to escape from the city and feel like they're dining in a wild jungle. For an even more dramatic experience, you can incorporate live animals, such as birds or reptiles, into your restaurant.
Another surprising theme is the space or sci-fi concept, which transports diners into another world. Think black walls with neon lights, metallic finishes, and spaceship-like structures. You can even have servers dressed as astronauts to enhance the experience.
For a more sophisticated atmosphere, you can try an art-inspired restaurant. Incorporate a specific art style or artist into your decor, and serve dishes that complement the art. For example, you can have a Van Gogh-themed restaurant, where you serve dishes inspired by his famous paintings.
These surprising themed interiors in restaurants are just a few ideas to help you create a unique dining experience. Whatever theme you choose, make sure it aligns with your restaurant's brand and target audience. With the right decor and attention to detail, you can create an atmosphere that your diners will never forget.

WandaVision Ep 4 SPOILERS
Yes, spoilers,
Wherein I watch and say stuff that might or might not be worth reading.
After a little bit of a lackluster start, there was good story progress last week. An escalation of weird, which I appreciated. I'll probably have to relive it, because Disney doesn't want to let me skip the previously. Ever. Why are you the way you are, Disney?
Geraldine/Monica is made of whispery voices and swirling dust and such. Weird. She's sitting in a chair, sleeping, and apparently being reconstituted. She wakes to a hospital room but outside is chaos. Lots of yelling and people running about. There's like swirling dust or human confetti everywhere, and other people are being reconstituted left and right. Seems unusual. Not the sort of thing that normally happens in hospitals. Oh, are they being un-snapped? The great un-snappening. The un-snapapalooza. The fall of the snappocalypse. I'll stop. I guess we're in a flashback of sorts.
Dudes, Monica just like full on hip checked some dude into the boards. She didn't mean it, but, damn, that guy went flying. Nobody knows what's going on, it's madness. A doctor recognizes her and asks where she went and Monica's all "uh, what? I took a nap?" Napping and then snapping and then popping back into existence. Ain't that just the way? Oh, sad, her mom died while she was missing for five years. :(
Sentient Weapon Observation Response Division — please nobody expect me to remember that. They have a Cape Canaveral looking compound with multiple launch pads and a very large hanger smack in the middle. Gee how neat for them that they get to operate out in the open, Phil Coulson says (in my head) with a whole lot of sarcasm.
Oh, right, they called it the Blip. The Great Un-Blippening. That doesn't sound as good. What on earth with the massive monitors in the main lobby. Nobody likes watching the news that much. Monica is trying to brazenly walk through the front doors with a badge that doesn't work and wow, security guy is kind of a dick. Oh, she belongs there. Captain Monica Rambeau. Captain, good for her.
And now security dick is revealed to be even more dickish, since this is just after the Blip and she's trying to go back to work. Like, SWORD couldn't put out a memo "Be on the lookout for recently unblipped personnel. Don't be massive dicks to them when their security badges don't work, because of how they got blipped and all"? Also maybe a reorientation packet, or like a desk out front "Back from the Blip? Talk to Lt. Mandy Smith in HR about your reactivation options today!" I'm just spitballing here. I get it was chaotic, but that's no reason to let the unblipped get a rude welcome. It wasn't their fault Thanos was critically dumb.
Blip no longer sounds like a word.
Anyway, the acting director is fortunately there to meet her before she could drop her gloves and punch the security dick in the dick. Aww, Maria Rambeau is on the Wall of Valor, or whatever they call it at SWORD.
Things aren't going well at SWORD. The Blip put the hurt on the division. Their remaining astronaut trainees have chickened out. Oh, what if there was like crew up in orbit that got blipped and then when they unblipped five years later … yikes. Well, I'll allow the 'lost their nerve' may have a solid basis in horribleness that probably occurred around the Blip. I retract the 'chickened out' comment.
This is a very long walk-and-talk. Maria Rambeau built SWORD "from the ground up". Bless.
The Director has grounded Monica. Well, actually, her mom grounded her, making protocols in case vanished personnel one day returned. Lol. Though, I mean, I'd guess she'd know, what with Carol and all. "I know it's a raw deal, but there is one positive takeaway. She believed you'd come back." Awww
So, she's off to deal with some sort of missing persons case in New Jersey overseeing the loan of one of their drones for the FBI. I guess Wanda will be the missing person. Yep, she's off to Westview. Which has seen better days.
Hey! It's Agent Woo! I like you Agent Woo! Did I know he was in this? I don't remember. Randall Park's great. A happy surprise.
Hmm, he has a missing witness. So, not Wanda, then. Hmm again. Agent Woo contacted known associates, family, friends — none of them have ever heard of the witness. A mystery!
Oh and there's another wrinkle.
"Pardon me Sheriff, would you mind repeating your claim about Westview to my colleague here?"
"No such place," he says, standing next to the 'Welcome to Westview" sign.
Hmmm, puzzling. Jimmy Woo can't reach anybody listed as living in town. So, wait, the town doesn't exist, except it does, but, nobody thinks it does, so where did he get the phone records for residents? The phone company was just like "here's your records for the imaginary city of Westview, all 3,000+ residents that never existed, and yet we have the numbers and we're just not going to question that". Weird.
"So you can't reach anyone inside and everyone on the outside has some sort of selective amnesia?" That does seem to be the case, Monica. Super odd. Agent Woo is very sanguine about the whole thing. He dealt with Scott Lang, I guess after that everything else is like, 'meh'.
"Why haven't' you gone inside to investigate?" A fine question, Captain.
"Because it doesn't want me to." That's just creepy, Agent Woo. "You can feel it, too, can't you? Nobody's supposed to go in." I guess this is where the drone will come in handy. Oh, it's the little helicopter that Wanda found in the bushes in the second episode. I'm going to pretend that super advanced SWORD drones would totally look like cheap RC toy helicopters. I guess that's a disguise?
Monica wants to know why she and Agent Woo are aware that Westview exists and nobody else is. Does that mean the Sheriff was standing next to the Welcome to Westview sign and just did not see it at all? He was just hanging out in the middle of nowhere with a weirdly laconic FBI agent who kept asking about the town that very clearly wasn't just right behind them? That's a little more than amnesia.
Also, Agent Woo's hero was Elliot Ness. Of course it was.
Oh no, the drone vanished as it crossed the town line! There's an energy field around the town that looks like what happens when you push your fingers against an old monitor and get the weird pixelly rainbow. Agent Woo's all "please no touch" and Monica's all "yes, I think I'll stick my whole hand in there." And she got sucked in. Agent Woo's gotta be like "WHY DOESN'T ANYBODY EVER LISTEN TO ME?"
24 hours later. Darcy! Some sort of transport van. A trio of other suits in the back, plus Darcy. She tries to talk to one of the dudes and he's all "we're not supposed to talk to each other!" "Boy Scout leader, got it." Relax, uptight guy. Pfft, what sort of team is that? The rest give up their specialty. Aww, bless, she went into astrophysics. "We've got the full clown car." heh.
Boy Scout leader finally caving to peer pressure: "I'm a chemical engineer." Darcy: "No one cares." lol. Missed you, girlfriend!
And in 24 hours SWORD/FBI whoever have set up a little military camp. Oh a "response base". How banally euphemistic. There's like a whole bunch of agencies there, as well as Army and Air Force.
Dr. Lewis. Oh, I'm so proud. I bet Jane was over the moon. Saved from poli-sci!
Elsewhere another drone vanishes. Darcy darcys a lot at an uptight uniform who is breathing down her neck "make your assessment" and it's delightful. Darcy notices some high levels of cosmic background radiation and also something weird layered over the top of that. Hmm, she needs a tv. "An old one, like not flat." One with vacuum tubes, perhaps?
In another part of the camp, they send in a guy in a hazmat suit, down into the sewers, looking for Monica. I guess he'll be the beekeper Wanda tosses in ep 2. Jimmy Woo is not optimistic about that plan. He tells the SWORD Director all about it.
"Someone must really miss you back at Quantico." "No, sir, softball season is over." Lol.
All their high tech scanning is turning up nothing.
Uhoh, screaming. Oh, nevermind, it's the laughtrack. While everybody else was dicking around with the LIDAR, Darcy has tracked down the last tube tv in New Jersey and has tuned into the Wanda Dimension. Episode one is playing.
Darcy is understandably particularly baffled by Vision. "Look, I know it's been a crazy few years on this planet, but he's dead right? Not blipped. Dead." Poor Vision. Alas.
Director wants to know if the broadcast is realtime or a recording. Or what? Darcy's like "how tf should I know?"
Jimmy asks the good question "So you're saying the universe created a sitcom staring two Avengers?" "It's a working theory."
Now SWORD fans out! And collects every ye olde TV on the eastern seaboard. Who doesn't love a good sitcom, amiright? (Me. Me do not love sitcoms). The Director storms off to wherever for whatever reason. I don't know, don't care. Jimmy and Darcy are on the case.
Darcy is IDing the other "characters" in the sitcom, who appear to be real people with NJ driver's liscenses, while Jimmy is wondering why the force field is hexagonal. You've got me there. And now we're montaging.
Jimmy ponders the big board of 'characters' and Darcy drops her cup o' noodles when she spots Monica in the second episode. He and Darcy discuss and he's like "is it an alternate reality, time travel, some cockamamie social experiment?" Darcy's all "it's a sitcom." A pure mystery.
Darcy comes up with the idea to reach out to Wanda via the radio in her kitchen. "Next time she's washing dishes — which by my count happens about once an episode, barf." heh. She tech babbles some and I'm very proud.
A minion agent runs up with the latest intel from the most recent episode, it's a picture of the SWORD drone that looks more retro (frankly it looks better than the 'real world' one.) Hmmm, such a puzzler. Why did it change, they wonder.
Darcy Lewis and Jimmy Woo are a partnership I can totally get behind. Jimmy was the voice trying to reach Wanda. Darcy's watching the show while Jimmy's trying the radio thing. It's the second episode where Wanda's talking to Emma Caulfield and things go weird. Good. I'm glad they jumped us to the outside world by ep four. While I thought the first two eps were slow, I think maybe they'll work better once we can watch the whole thing at a go.
Dude is still crawling through the sewers. I completely forgot he was down there. And the field extends below ground and he just crawled through it and became a beekeeper, and his safety rope snapped and … became a jumprope?
And then Wanda wishes him to the cornfield. (I guess? We don't see what happens to him.)
SWORD is watching episode three.
"1950s, 1960s, and now 70s. Why does it keep switching time periods. It can't be purely for my enjoyment can it?" Guys, it's so good to see Darcy. "I can't believe Wanda and Vision are having a baby." No really, Jimmy and Darcy, BFFS 4EVAH! They're eating chips and watching the episode. Delightful. Just delightful.
"Twins. What a twist." Jimmy gives Darcy a look. "I'm invested!"
Monica mentions Ultron and Jimmy and Darcy are like "Whoa!".
They notice the screen sort of glitches and then Monica is gone and it's the end credits. Like when Bee guy vanished. Darcy and Jimmy are confused. "Someone is censoring the broadcast." Yeah, Wanda. She's gone to the scary place, friends.
Alarms go off and they run off. But, we go into Wanda World the aspect ratio changes from 4:3 to 16:9 and it's a new angle on when Wanda went all scary at Monica, demanding to know who she is. And then, of course, she gets kicked out of Wanda World.
"Wanda, I'm just your neighbor." "Then how could you know about Ultron?"
Wanda brings up the glowy hands of scary. "You are a stranger and an outsider and right now you are trespassing here. And I want you to leave." And then she zooms Monica out through the walls and fences and fields and that looked like it probably hurt.
Oh gross. Wanda turns around and sees Dead Vision. The big hole in his head and his face all, you know, dead looking. She looks away and then he's normal when she looks back. Well, now this has turned all sad, you guys. "We can go wherever we want." "No, we can't." Sad. Poor Wanda. The aspect ratio goes back to 4:3. I’m sure Editorial was like “oh god, again?”
"Don't worry darling, I have everything under control."
I don't think so, Wanda.
Good ep! My only real takeaway is that none of this is going to end particularly happily.
So … Darcy and Jimmy, BFFS 4EVAH!

Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon and Blue Origin, will fly to the edge of space today, 20 July, at 5:00 pm IST. This will be the 16th flight for the New Shepherd rocket, but the first flight with a crew.
The entire trip for the billionaire and his motley crew will last for a total of 11 minutes, and they will experience the effects of zero gravity for a total of three minutes. However, the date has some significance, as it has been chosen to coincide with the 52nd anniversary of Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin taking their first steps on the moon.
The rocket will launch from Blue Origin's Launch Site One facility some 32km outside Van Horn, a rural town in Texas. The Karman line is the imaginary boundary between Earth's atmosphere and outer space and is 100 km above sea level. The Blue Origin flight will rise to 106 kilometres above sea level.
#NewShepard is on the pad. The launch team completed vehicle rollout this morning and final preparations are underway. Liftoff is targeted for 8:00 am CDT / 13:00 UTC. Live broadcast begins at T-90 minutes on https://t.co/7Y4TherpLr. #NSFirstHumanFlight pic.twitter.com/oShmtRmA4n
— Blue Origin (@blueorigin) July 20, 2021
This launch comes hot on the heels of another billionaire, Richard Branson, flying to space on his Virgin Galactic spaceplane with a crew of five other senior Galactic employees. Their flight did not touch the Karman Line, as it rose to only 86 km above sea level.
However, if this flight is successful, both billionaires will be able to add 'astronaut' to their list of titles. NASA and the US Air Force choose to define an astronaut as a person who has flown higher than 80 km above sea level, which both Branson, and now Bezos, will achieve.
While travelling to space is not a big deal anymore, these flights are a step in the direction of broadening the horizon of space travel. They are also exhibiting that their crafts are able to conduct safe human flights to space, while increasing the scope of commercial space flights as well as opening up the space tourism industry.
Both Bezos and Branson do not believe they are in competition with each other. This comes as a surprise, as Blue Origins had posted a list of differences between the two space flights and definitely hinted at poking fun.
During an interview with the TODAY show on NBC on Monday, Bezos said, "There's one person who was the first person in space – his name was Yuri Gagarin– and that happened a long time ago."
"This isn't a competition, this is about building a road to space so that future generations can do incredible things in space," he added.
Sir Richard Branson on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert last week said he was not competing to beat Bezos in this billionaire space race. He even advised Bezos saying, "Just absorb the view outside - really take it in. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
New Shepard Rocket
The New Shepard rocket is Blue Origin's reusable suborbital rocket named after NASA astronaut Alan Shepherd. He was the first American astronaut to go to space and also walk on the moon on one of the Apollo missions. Similar to the Blue Origin mission, he did not orbit the Earth. He flew 186 km high and returned to Earth; his entire trip lasted 15-and-a-half minutes.
The New Shepard rocket is designed to take both people and payloads to the Karman line, and all missions will last 11 minutes.
The rocket has flown 15 test flights and has proved to be safe for transporting human beings.
It is 18 metres tall and has only one stage. It uses liquid hydrogen and a liquid oxygen engine to power the rocket. The only byproduct is water vapour.
The rocket is launched into space at 3,700 kph and then the crew capsule separates from the rest of the rocket at 76 km. The capsule continues to travel upwards and reaches 106 km - the maximum altitude and coasts for some time before it begins its descent. The crew capsule has large windows that allow people inside to really get a 360-degree view of their surroundings. It is also spacious enough to allow everyone to move around and enjoy the outside scenery.
The capsule can carry six astronauts and is a pressurised cabin. According to the website, the vehicle is fully autonomous and there is no need for a pilot.
Seven minutes after launching and then separating from the capsule, the booster lands on the ground, around three km away from the launch pad. The capsule uses three parachutes and a thruster to help it land.
"We learned how to make a vehicle safe enough that we'd be willing to put our own loved ones on it, and send them to space," said Blue Origin CEO Bob Smith during a press briefing.
Female pilot Mary Wallace 'Wally' Funk, who is part of the crew, told NBC that she plans to make the most of the opportunity and is looking forward to floating, turning and rolling in near-zero gravity.
Spacesuits
Something that Blue Origin is doing differently is its spacesuits. It has decided to do a complete 180 and skip this significant and iconic astronaut look. Instead, the crew will have bright blue flight suits that will give the four crew members a uniform look without all the extra bells and whistles.
During the NBC interview, Bezos added they would fly in light "flight suits" only.
He said, "With the cabin pressurised, it's redundant; we don't need to use spacesuits, and we're going to be just like this," as he showed the chest of the flight suit that he was wearing to the camera.
The Virgin Galactic crew wore spacesuits; however, they were non-pressurised as well. Created in partnership with Under Armour, the suits and footwear will be worn by all space tourists that will fly Virgin Galactic. The line was first showcased in 2019 a la catwalk style, but in the air.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk still does spacesuits for his Crew Dragon flights. During SpaceX's first human spaceflight, the black and white spacesuits were revealed for the first time in 2020. They have been specially designed and are customised for each crew member. The suits are also an important factor for the flight, as they are an extension of the spacecraft.
All-civilian crew
The all-civilian crew will include Bezos, accompanied by his brother Mark; a female pilot that NASA rejected for its astronaut program, Mary Wallace 'Wally' Funk and high school graduate Oliver Daemen.

Funk, at 82 years old, will become the oldest person to go to space, while Daemen at 18, will be the youngest.
Mark Bezos
Mark is a financier and works at the Bezos Family Foundation. He was also a volunteer firefighter. He founded an advertising agency and is Senior Vice President at a charity organisation named Robin Hood. He is six years younger than Bezos and is most likely a millionaire like his brother, since he was an early investor in Amazon.
Bezos shared the moment when he asked Mark to join him on Blue Origin's first human spaceflight in a video on Instagram. He said, "The greatest adventure, with my best friend."

A post shared by Jeff Bezos (@jeffbezos)
The two brothers are best friends and quite close, making him a logical choice to share this special occasion with.
Wally Funk
Sixty years after training to become an astronaut and being rejected by a sexist NASA program, Funk will finally go to space. In a video posted on Bezos' Instagram, she said, "I like to do things that nobody's ever done." She later went on to become a pilot as she has been training since she was nine-years-old.
Funk was part of a privately-funded, innovative flight program named Mercury 13 in the 1960s. All the members of the program were women and she was the youngest of the group. The program made women undergo the same training and tests as future male astronauts in the official NASA program.

A post shared by Jeff Bezos (@jeffbezos)
Funk said, "They were testing us to our extremes." And at the end of the program, she was told she "had done the job better and faster than any of the men."
But the program was cancelled after NASA rejected it.
The first woman went into space in 1983 and in 1999, Funk said in an interview, "It was kind of interesting, the fact that we could have done it, and they just wouldn't let us. A dog did it. A monkey did it. A man did it. Women can do it, too."
Oliver Daemen
18-year-old Daemen will be the first paying customer for Blue Origin. He is a recent High School graduate who has taken a break year before he goes to the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands this September. He is expected to study physics and innovation management.
Daemen is replacing the $28 million live auction winner, who had to postpone his trip due to scheduling conflicts. Blue Origin has conducted a live auction to sell one ticket for this flight and the money raised was to go to the Bezos Foundation. The company has not yet revealed the name, age, gender, nationality of the winner. Daemen was the runner up in the live auction.
While they were interested in flying to space, Daemen and his father, Joes Daemen, dropped out of the auction after the bid started to skyrocket. Daemon Sr is the founder of a Dutch investment company named Somerset Capital Partners in the Netherlands, reported The New York Times.

A post shared by Oliver Daemen (@oliver_daemen)
“He was a participant in the auction and had secured a seat on the second flight,” said Sara Blask, a Blue Origin spokesperson, in an email. “We moved him up when this seat on the first flight became available.”
Blue Origin has not officially revealed a lot of information about Daemen, including the price of his ticket.
Flying on the New Shepard rocket will fulfill a lifelong dream for Daemen. According to a statement, Daemen has been fascinated by space, the moon and rockets since he was four.
“This is a dream come true!” Daemen said in a news release from the family. “I hadn’t counted on this at all, until last week that surprising phone call from Blue Origin came. This is so unbelievably cool! The flight to and into space only takes 10 minutes, but I already know that these will be the most special 10 minutes of my life.”

Jeff Bezos is about to blast off into space with Blue Origin. Here's how to watch
Jeff Bezos, the richest person in the world, is set to join the astronaut club Tuesday on the first crewed launch by Blue Origin, another key moment in a big month for the fledgling space tourism industry.
The mission comes days after Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson crossed the final frontier, narrowly besting the Amazon magnate in their battle of the billionaires.
Blue Origin’s sights are, however, set higher: both literally in terms of the altitude to which its reusable New Shepard craft will ascend compared to Virgin’s spaceplane, but also in its future ambitions.
Bezos founded Blue Origin back in 2000, with the goal of one day building floating space colonies with artificial gravity where millions of people will work and live.
The New Shepard booster on the landing pad, 14 April 2021. (Blue Origin)
Today, the company is developing a heavy-lift orbital rocket called New Glenn and also a Moon lander it is hoping to contract to NASA under the Artemis program.
“They’ve had 15 successful New Shepard uncrewed flights and we’ve been waiting years to see when they’re going to start flying people,” Laura Forczyk, founder of space consulting firm Astralytical, told AFP, calling it an “exciting time” for enthusiasts.
How to watch
New Shepard will blast off at 8:00 am Central Time (1300 GMT) on July 20 from a remote facility in the west Texas desert called Launch Site One, some 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of the nearest town, Van Horn.
The event will be live streamed on BlueOrigin.com beginning an hour and a half before.
Richest, oldest and youngest
Joining Bezos on the fully autonomous flight will be barrier-breaking female aviator Wally Funk, who at 82 is set to be the oldest ever astronaut, Dutch teenager Oliver Daemen, the company’s first paying customer, who will become the youngest astronaut.
Rounding out the four-member crew is Jeff Bezos’ brother Mark, a financier who directs the Bezos Family Foundation and works as a volunteer firefighter.
The pair are best friends, and Jeff shared the moment he asked his younger sibling to join him in a viral video on Instagram last month.
Notably absent is the mysterious winner of a US$28 million auction for a seat, who had “scheduling conflicts” and will take part in a future flight, and has asked to remain anonymous, the company said.
After lift-off, New Shepard will accelerate towards space at speeds exceeding Mach 3 using a liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen engine with no carbon emissions.
The capsule soon separates from its booster, and the astronauts unbuckle and begin to experience weightlessness.
The crew will spend a few minutes beyond the Karman line – the internationally recognized boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and space, at 62 miles altitude (100 kilometers), as the spacecraft peaks at 65 miles high (106 kilometers).
They will be able to admire the curvature of the planet – and the inky black of the rest of the universe – from large windows that comprise a third of the cabin’s surface area.
The booster returns autonomously to a landing pad just north of its launch site, while the capsule freefalls back to Earth before deploying three giant parachutes, and finally a thruster, to land gently in the west Texas desert.
Bigger prizes
Beyond the first flight, relatively little is known about Blue Origin’s future tourism plans.
The company has a history of secrecy, its existence only becoming public knowledge three years after its creation. It then pursued a policy of “self-imposed silence” until 2015.
Unlike Virgin Galactic, Blue Origin hasn’t officially started selling tickets – Daemen won his spot through the auction process. The company wants two more flights this year, then “many more” in 2022, it told AFP.
Forczyk, the analyst, said it will all depend on the level of demand that is generated by these early flights, and how well the industry recovers from accidents “which there inevitably will be, because spaceflight is inherently risky.”
Elon Musk‘s SpaceX will enter the fray in September with an all-civilian orbital expedition on its Crew Dragon, and is tying up with another company, Axiom, for visits to the International Space Station.
Beyond tourism, Blue Origin would like to supplant SpaceX as NASA’s leading private sector partner, and sees New Shepard as “sort of the stepping stone and also the way to make money along the way for the greater ambition,” said Forczyk.
Who’s who on Blue Origin’s first crewed flight:
Blue Origin’s maiden crewed flight on Tuesday involves four people who will cross the Karman line, which separates Earth’s atmosphere from space, for the very first time.
Here is a brief look at the quartet of soon-to-be astronauts.
The tycoon, Jeff Bezos
Jeff Bezos, 57, will leave behind the planet where he made his vast fortune for a few minutes on a spaceship built by the company he founded in 2000, when he was still merely a single-digit billionaire.
Six years before that, he started a small online bookstore called Amazon.com out of his garage. Bezos’ net worth is today estimated at more than $200 billion.
The brother, Mark Bezos
Jeff Bezos has invited along his brother Mark, a financier who directs the Bezos Family Foundation and works as a volunteer firefighter.
The pair are best friends, and Jeff shared the moment he surprised his sibling, six years his junior, by asking him to join the mission in a video that went viral on Instagram last month.
Trailblazer Wally Funk
At 82, barrier-breaking woman aviator Wally Funk is about to become the oldest ever astronaut, fulfilling a lifelong dream that was thwarted by the sexism of the early space era.
Funk, who took her first flying lesson aged nine, excelled in the Mercury 13 project which was intended to train women for space using the same standards as male astronauts, but the program was eventually nixed.
She nevertheless had an accomplished career in aviation, becoming the first female air safety investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board, and serving as chief pilot in several flight schools.
Dutch teen Oliver Daemen
Oliver Daemen, 18, is set to become the youngest astronaut. He holds a private pilot’s license and is a space enthusiast who will study physics in university this fall.
The Dutch teen is flying in place of the still anonymous winner of a $28 million public auction, who asked to pass this time because of “scheduling conflicts,” and will go on a later trip.
Daemen’s ticket was paid for by his father, the CEO of a private equity firm, CNBC reported.

2017: #3-GUIDE TO THE OUTER LIMITS
There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: there is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to – The Outer Limits. – Prologue to The Outer Limits.
In the late 1980’s I would often get home from work around 1 am. I would turn on my old, small, ancient, black and white, tv that had separate VHF and UHF dials and a partially broken antenna. To get the tv to produce any sort of recognizable image, a misshapen rock had to be balanced on one dial exactly the right way - and presto - the tv worked! And what I saw was a black and white older tv program with enormous tension, gripping drama, good music, and scary aliens. I became mesmerized by this series and tried to watch all of the episodes (see 2016: #3-BLOODY MESMERISM). The aliens’ designs were very creative, and the suspenseful series had intense cinematography, often with a dose of film noir or even German Expressionism. This excessively eerie series was The Outer Limits.
The Outer Limits is an hour long science fiction/horror/fantasy anthology series that aired for two seasons, from 1963-65 comprising forty-nine episodes. It is very much classified with The Twilight Zone. There are a number of black and white, horror/science-fiction anthology tv series like The Twilight Zone: Alfred Hitchcock Presents, One Step Beyond, Thriller with Boris Karloff, and The Outer Limits. These series all had a narrator such as Rod Serling who often said something that sounded special, imparting some wisdom. The Outer Limits had no regular cast members at all, but Vic Perrin provided the Control Voice heard in each episode. His opening and closing remarks sound much more profound and humanistic than what was said on these other series. The Outer Limits was created by Leslie Stevens who directed William Shatner in the 1966 horror film, Incubus, that was filmed using the artificial language of Esperanto. Stevens originally wanted The Outer Limits to be titled, Please Stand By. The producer of the series was Joseph Stefano who was also the screenwriter for Hitchcock’s Psycho. Stephen King has described The Outer Limits as “the best program of its type ever to run on network TV.”
In addition to having excellent creatures, effects, and cinematography, The Outer Limits also included quite a few stars. Batman’s Adam West made an appearance as an astronaut on Mars. Eddie Albert battled growling tumbleweeds in one episode, and Martin Landau appears in two episodes. Cliff Robertson contacted glowing aliens, and timid Donald Pleasance used his psionic powers on people. David McCallum’s fat head swelled up, and Simon Oakland from The Night Stalker turned into a bird alien (see 2015: #5-GUIDE TO THE NIGHT STALKER). Lou Grant’s Ed Asner and Ted Knight both popped up as did Russell Johnson, the Professor from Gilligan’ Island. Robert Culp appeared in three episodes, one about evil, alien, scheming, zombie-making, greasy black rocks. Even Richard Dawson from Family Feud somehow managed to appear in an episode.
Episodes were written by by science fiction authors such as Harlan Ellison and Clifford Simak. The best episodes of the series were written by Jospeh Stefano. He left the series after the first season, and the series did not survive beyond season two. Many of the best episodes of The Outer Limits are also quite strange. “It Crawled Out of the Woodwork” is about a ball of dust that takes over a corporation. Since full episode guides can be found online, a focus on the best episodes may be useful. “Nightmare” has some of the most unforgettable aliens, the Ebonites, who are apparently involved in a war against humanity, and one of their prisoners is a frantic Martin Sheen. “Keeper of the Purple Twilight” is about tall, scary aliens pursuing one of their own to Earth. “Controlled Experiment” is the only comedy episode of the series and one of my favorites; it was intended to be a pilot for a new tv series. It is about Martians secretly on Earth trying to understand why humans commit murder by using a time machine. “Controlled Experiment” stars Archie Bunker’s Carrol O’Connor, Space 1999’s Barry Morse, and Star Trek’s Grace Lee Whitney, (aka Yeoman Rand). German electronic musician, Pete Namlook, was a fan of The Outer Limits and included samples from the series in his albums; he sampled “Controlled Experiment” for his album, Miles Apart. “Don’t Open Until Doomsday” is about a horrifying monster in a box that sucks others into its timeless realm. “The Zanti Misfits” is considered by TV Guide to be one of the one-hundred best episodes of television. It is about a criminal, Bruce Dern, who encounters small, irate, intelligent, insect-like criminals in their tiny UFO. “A Feasibility Study” is perhaps the best and most frightening episode of the series, similar in plot to The Mist and with scary aliens. If you watch any episodes of The Outer Limits, watch “A Feasibility Study.”
There is a strong connection between The Outer Limits and the original Star Trek series. This may be true because Gene Roddenberry often visited the The Outer Limits studios. One of the best episodes of The Outer Limits, “Fun and Games,” is about advanced aliens who kidnap other aliens to fight it out to the death for their entertainment; this was later a plot for an episode of Star Trek. William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and James Doohan (aka Scotty) all appear in separate episodes of The Outer Limits. Vic Perrin, the Control Voice, appeared or provided voice work in three Star Trek episodes. Alien design, props, and special effects were also borrowed for Star Trek from The Outer Limits. The exact alien prop of the Horta from Star Trek’s “Devil in the Dark” first appeared in The Outer Limits’ episode, “The Probe.” Even the most iconic Star Trek special effect of the transporter, the sparkling vanishing effect, originated from The Outer Limits’ “The Mutant.”
In the 1980’s and 90’s, horror/science fiction tv series became popular again. The Darkroom was introduced by James Coburn wearing all black. Monsters featured exactly that in each half-hour episode. Tales From the Darkside was soon replaced by Tales From the Crypt. A new The Twilight Zone series emerged. It was only a matter of time until The Outer Limits was revived in 1995 in the form of a new, color tv series that ran until 2002. It was not nearly as good as the original series, and the new series ran for a hundred and fifty-four episodes over seven seasons. A few episodes were remade such as “Nightmare,” “A Feasibility Study” and “I, Robot.” Episodes included such stars as Mark Hamill and various new Star Trek actors such as Marina Sirtis, Rene Auberjonis, Robert Picardo, and Doug Jones from Star Trek: Discovery. “Dark Matters” is probably the best episode of the new series, and focuses on a starless void filled with marooned spacecraft and the ghosts of aliens. I adapted that plot for a Dungeons & Dragons adventure (see 2015: #12-THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES 4: THE FAR REALM – THE ILLITHID DREADNAUGHT, PART 2).
Since Joseph Stefano was the main force behind The Outer Limits stranger monsters, what became of him? Years after The Outer Limits, he was the writer of “Skin of Evil” for Star Trek: The Next Generation. The episode featured Armus, a frightening monster that was an amalgamation of evil from an alien species that looked like a hulking, vaguely humanoid black pudding. Armus shockingly killed Tasha Yar, a main character in the series. Stefano wrote for The Swamp Thing tv series and he wrote two episodes for the new The Outer Limits series. He wrote the remade episodes of “Nightmare” and “A Feasibility Study.” His final big project was writing the screenplay for the 1998 Psycho remake film by Gus van Sant.
If you don’t have time to watch a horror film, watch The Outer Limits. The atmosphere the series creates is perfect for the month of Halloween. The entire series is available in a DVD box set that is reasonable in price. There is a soundtrack cd, action figures, and Halloween masks for sale based on aliens from the series. Go and experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to the Outer Limits!

GC/BC meeting Benny for the first time?
This happened long before Benny and Bad Cop began their relationship, long before the Rebellion, when Master Builders were hunted and the survivors forced into hiding.
———————————
In hindsight, disguising the shuttle’s radar signature and landing her and her crew of six at an abandoned airstrip in the dead of night and shuttling all six crew members to the nearest Army base was the easy part.
The space center and most of the Air Force and Naval bases were on lockdown. Six astronauts had managed to disappear without a trace and Business was hell-bent on finding them.
Benny, like so many others who called the space center their home, had nowhere to go. And for the first time in his life, he was frightened.
But he had Red. Strong, brave, steadfast Red. The only family he had, with these four other astronauts. They vowed to make it out together.
The base outside Bricksburg was on Business’s radar again and they had to get these astronauts out of the city. Keep safe until the storm blew over.
There were rumors swirling around of a base several miles outside the city known only as CCL and a safe place for Builders. Red’s CO was working on obtaining fake IDs and fake records. Transport the astronauts two at a time. Red and Benny could weather the storm until then.
A month passed and finally Red and Benny were given the go for their mission to sneak out of the city.
They make plans to leave during the rush hour traffic. They’ll draw the least suspicion that way, Red reasons. Even now he wears the mantle of commanding officer. It’s a small amount of safety and comfort even now.
Benny and Red go in one van, while White and Blackwell go in another. They’re disguised in layers of clothes, grown-out hair, and full beards in Red and White’s case. Benny curses his inability to grow a mustache but goddamn if he didn’t try.
Their IDs say they’re contractors from the next city over, doing work at the space center. Definitely not master builders. Just plain, normal construction workers with a van full of instructions.
The director sends them off with a crisp salute. “Godspeed,” he says.
And the astronauts are off, on a mission far more dangerous than launching into space in a tin can on tons of explosives.
Benny plays CAPCOM from the passenger seat, using a walkie-talkie to communicate between their vans and Red and White’s.
Unsurprisingly, they reach a police checkpoint on the edge of town before heading into the utility tunnels.
“You know where to go,” Benny radios the astronauts in the van behind them.
“10-4,” says Blackwell.
Radio silence.
Benny can feel his heart pounding in his throat. He wills his heart to be still, focuses all his nervous energy into the quiet spot in his chest like he did before every mission.
This was just another mission, he tells himself. Your chance of dying in this mission isn’t any greater than a shuttle launch. It’s morbid but brings him a strange amount of comfort.
Red’s hand gives Benny’s thigh a gentle squeeze and he rolls down the driver’s window.
“Papers, please.”
Benny’s blood runs cold. It’s not an army of police bots, but it’s the head of the secret police himself. No one’s sure of his real name, and he has many terrifying nicknames. In MB circles he’s known only as Bad Cop.
Bad Cop’s stare is unreadable and unflinching from behind mirrored aviators.
“We’re contractors,” Red hands over his and Benny’s fake IDs. “Same as the fellas in the van behind us. Just finishing up some work at the space center.”
Bad Cop lowers his aviators, staring hard at Benny. Benny stares right back into cold grey eyes. He sees something flicker in Bad Cop’s eyes before Bad Cop straightens up and rifles through their papers.
“Everything looks to be in order,” Bad Cop says but Benny doesn’t dare breathe yet.
“But I’ll need you to get out of the cars while we search the back,” Bad Cop says. It’s not a question.
Red turns the car off and jumps out of the driver’s side while Benny follows suit. He’s running scenario after scenario in his head.
If they get caught what’s the worst that would happen– oh shit torture, that’s the worst.
Bad Cop makes his way around the passenger side of the van where Benny stands, proud and defiant despite the fear running through his skull.
Bad Cop scrutinizes Benny’s fake ID, then swaps his aviators out for reading glasses and scrutinizes his face.
They’re staring each other down, Bad Cop’s face blank and unreadable. “Be careful out there, Mr. Johnson. Master Builders on the loose all over town.”
Benny swallows hard and nods. “Yessir.” It’s all he can manage to say.
“You’re free to go,” Bad Cop dons his aviators once more.
“Thank you, sir,” Red says, quickly slamming the van doors shut and ushering Benny in.
Against all probability, Bad Cop waves them on.
“I can’t believe we fucking made it,” comes White’s voice through the walkie-talkie.
Benny finally allows a sigh of relief and Red’s breathing has returned to normal.
“Well done, Blue,” Red says. “Well done.”
Benny manages a tight-lipped smile, his mind still reeling from his interaction with Bad Cop. He feels like those cold grey eyes will follow him even in sleep.
Their long journey has only just begun and is far from over.

Stimulation, EVE Online & Cowboy Bebop
Hello and welcome back once again, we hope that everyone is having a fabulous time. This week we celebrate many achievements that are pure catnip for Nerds, to start with the eventual launch of the Falcon heavy rocket, also the first image of a black hole, my goodness, so much interstellar goodness. The first topic up this week is about electrical stimulation of the brain and how it can help improve memory. Now that doesn’t mean that any students should go out and start electrocuting themselves…although we all know that one person we want to zap. Research is still being developed on application of electrolysis in the treatment of Alzheimers and other issues, and NO, do not got out and electrocute the elderly, that is not cool. Next up we look at a lawyer and a lobbyist who has been banned from Eve online, apparently he claims to be innocent. It is all a misunderstanding or something is his defence, please I used that when I was 8 as an excuse, surely he can do better. Next he will be saying it was his dog did it. Then DJ has news about the cast being announced for the live action series of Cowboy Beebop. We are all nervous but hopefully this one will work, of course we aren’t holding our breathe. After all, they have to get one right eventually don’t they? What do you think is the worst live action adaption from anime? Drop us a line and let us know, also which is you favourite anime you would recommend? Then we have the games of the week, shout outs, remembrances, events of interest, and birthdays. Hot diggedy do, now that is looking like a great show. As always, take care and look out for each other and stay hydrated.

9 Apr 1926 – William Henry Johnson also known as Zip the Pinhead, was an American freak show performer famous for his tapered head. He was born one of six children to a very poor African-American family. His parents were William and Mahalia Johnson, former slaves. As he grew, his body developed normally but his head remained small. His tapering cranium and heavy jaw made him attractive to agents from van Emburgh's Circus in Somerville, New Jersey. His unusual appearance caused many to believe that he was a "pinhead", or microcephalic. It is estimated that during his 67 years in show business, Zip entertained more than one hundred million people. He died of bronchitis at 68 in New York, New York - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zip_the_Pinhead
9 Apr 1959 - Frank Lloyd Wright, an American architect, interior designer, writer, and educator, who designed more than 1,000 structures, 532 of which were completed. Wright believed in designing structures that were in harmony with humanity and its environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. His famous works include Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum aka The Guggenheim and Fallingwater. He died of surgical complications at 91 in Phoenix, Arizona - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Lloyd_Wright
11 Apr 2007 – Ronald C. Speirs, a United States Army officer who served in the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division during World War II. He was initially assigned as a platoon leader in B Company of the 1st Battalion of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Speirs was reassigned to D Company of the 2nd Battalion prior to the invasion of Normandy in June 1944 and later assigned as commander of E Company during an assault on Foy, Belgium after the siege of Bastogne was broken during the Battle of the Bulge. Speirs also served in Korea, where he was assigned both as a rifle company commander and as a staff officer. He later became the American governor for Spandau Prison in Berlin. He reached the rank of captain while serving in the European Theater during World War II, major during the Korean War and retired as a lieutenant colonel. Speirs was portrayed in the television miniseries Band of Brothers by Matthew Settle. He died at 86 in Saint Marie, Montana - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronald_Speirs

Automation Movement of the Future
Kyler Lum
RJ Thompson

April 22, 2017
Automation Movement
There are always new art movements happening. In the past specific art movements have been triggered by common philosophy's or even for reasons of defiance against other art movements. The "Automation Movement", of the future will be the movements of electronics and interactive interfaces. Technology has not only been a recent uproar in the artistic aspect but over generations technology has changed the world. From transportation, military, factories and much more. Technology is shaping our future.
I truly believe that this next big movement is already in the making and art technologist, scientist and many others are being inspired and creating what people could see in the future. These people are digitally driven artist are rising to the top of the art world. Scientist, inventors and engineers that want to push boundaries and create new things that people have never seen before. The future of design will consist of user interfaces in which computers will interact with the users. Another aspect of this future of design will be augmented reality headsets.
The possibility of being able to digitally create something and actually have the viewer interact with your work through different programs is shaping the world now. In today's modern world in almost every household there are smart tablets, cell phones and computers that can interact with the user with just the touch of a screen. In the future I image that every household will have holographic devices such as computers, TVs, and tablets that do not require a heat signature from a touch of a finger but in essence have a holographic screen that will project in front of the user and without physically touching anything the user will be able to interact with it.
Also can you image walking down the street wearing a headset that not only tells you when you have incoming calls and text, completely replacing cell phones, but tell you when the next showing of a movie is by just looking at a movie theatre. This is what the future is and I believe that people every day are making strives into making this a reality.
Elon Musk in 2013, engineer and inventor, came out to the public with this new invention called a "Leap Motion" controller track (fig1) that enables the user to control computers with just hands. No need to touching the computer at all. The best part about this is that you do not need to wear anything to use Leap Motion. This is such a leap forward in technology in terms of the open possibilities that this technology is capable of. "Implementations by the, Space X1 Team creators of this "Leap Motion" system include a version using 3D glasses, a free-standing glass projection (as seen in Iron Man Movies) and the Oculus Rift headset for the full virtual reality experience".(The Next Web). Although these are not fully developed and assessable to the public; This sets such a strive in technology bringing designers, inventors all over showing people that it is possible that some day that our world will be consumed with holographic technology.
The most recent technology invented by Microsoft. Pushed the limits into what everyone could see in their future. "Unlike a normal virtual reality headset which places the user in a virtual reality environment Microsoft came out with a headset that brings the virtual environment into the real world calling this "interactive holograms" "(Business Insider).(fig 2) NASA has been utilizing these "interactive holograms" to make astronauts lives a little easier by projecting holographic images from earth to help fix issues they are having on board or even help with research.
These augmented reality headsets would in my eyes look like a normal pair of glasses but then projects times, dates and many other things right in front of you, completely eliminating need for cell phones and clocks. Everything would be right in front of you easily accessed and available at all times. In the future this technology will be so mass produced that everyone would have access to this type of technology just like in today's world with televisions, cell phones and computers.(fig 3)
The Automation Movement will consist of very bold angular typefaces. The colors of this movement will be simple default colors like a bright lime green, red, bright blue and pinks. Art of today consist of a lot of individuals expressing themselves through art. This could be in forms of different mediums used and different art styles used to self-reflect what individually as an artist they are passionate about not trying to emulate others work but are being inspired by new and old art movements creating their own style.
Automation Movement will be progress for the future. The Automation Movement will be a movement that inspires not only designers and artist but scientists, inventors and engineers creating technology that has never been seen before or even imagined. This movement will be an influence for a strive in technology.
The best part about this future movement for designers is that they are being to detail, map, and construct the technology of the future before it is even being physically built. Designers are able to show the public the ideas of the future in virtual form so that they are able to experience the new technology before it actually takes form. Now with 3 Dimensional printing is available. Designers are able to print dimensionally from a computer program and this also will help with the visual aspect of being able to show people a replica of what's to come. This being the case inventors and engineers lives will be much easier with the help of designers due to the fact that designers are able to show the replica of the finished product helping the engineers and inventors to be able to visually see and correct what the finished product will be.
The disadvantage to this movement for designers is that being able to sketch and create mock ups is one thing but actually being able to build and have this highly advanced knowledge to build and emulate the work is another thing. Immersing one's self into a specific field of knowledge and replicated the work of a designer are peoples professions. The knowledge to build these advanced pieces and having the sustainability to actually work is what engineers and inventors do. This is why the Automation Movement will be a movement which it will be imperative that all fields of knowledge work together to be able to accomplish the final product.
In a world that never stops evolving there will be so much more in the future in terms of technology. The Automation Movement will bring people together. Technology can only advance as far are the people creating it. In my eyes this movement will last a life time. There is always a demand for better and faster. Being content with what we have is never enough for this fast pace world. The need for technology will always be alive and the evolution of technology overtime has made people more productive and efficient.

Do aliens exist? 5 experts answered the question, and their replies are fascinating

Do aliens exist? 5 experts answered the question, and their replies are fascinating
Speculation has been rife about the contents of an unclassified report set to be released later this month from the Pentagon’s Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) task force.
The document, expected to drop on June 25, will supposedly provide a comprehensive summary of what the US government knows about UAPs – or, to use the more popular term, UFOs.
While the report is not yet public, The New York Times recently published what it claimed was a preview of the findings, provided by unnamed senior officials who were privy to the report’s contents.
According to the Times’s sources, the report does not provide any clear link or association between more than 120 incidents of UFO sightings from the past two decades, and a possibility of Earth having been visited by aliens.
If The Times’s sources are to be believed, there’s clearly still no good reason to interpret an unexplained object in the sky as evidence of aliens.
But does that mean aliens aren’t out there, somewhere else in the Universe? And if they are, could we ever find them? Or might they be so different to us that “finding” them is impossible in any meaningful sense?
We asked five experts. Four out of five experts said aliens do exist; here are their detailed responses.
Jonti Horner, astrobiologist:
I think that has to be a definite yes. But I think the real question is, are aliens close enough for us to discover them?
Space is unbelievably big. In the last few decades, we’ve learned almost every star in the cosmos has planets. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, is estimated to have up to 400 billion stars. If each of those has five planets, we’d have two trillion planets in our galaxy alone. And we know there are more galaxies in the cosmos than there are planets in the Milky Way.
In other words, there’s a lot of real estate out there. And with so much variety, I find it impossible to believe Earth is the only planet that has life – including intelligent and technologically-advanced life.
But will we ever find such extra-terrestrial life? That’s a tough question. Imagine one in a billion stars host a planet that can develop technologically advanced life which is able to scream its existence into the cosmos.
Well, that would give us 400 stars in our galaxy with technologically advanced life. But our galaxy is vast – 100,000 light years from side to side. That’s so big that those stars would, on average, be some 10,000 light years apart. That’s way too far for us to hear alien signals (at least at the moment) – unless they’re way more powerful than anything we can send!
So while I do believe alien life exists, I think finding proof of this will prove astonishingly hard.
Steven Tingay, astrophysicist:
Yes, but that’s a bold assertion. So, let’s be clear what we are talking about.
I consider the term “alien” to reference all manner of life, as we understand it on Earth, resident in places other than on Earth. Having said that, there is currently no detailed consensus on the definition of “life”. It is a very complex concept. But if we found something like bacteria somewhere other than on Earth, I would classify this as alien life.
The Universe contains hundreds of billions of galaxies, each of which can be composed of up to billions and billions of stars. Most of these stars have at least one planet each. These planetary systems form out of a rich mixture of elements, including all the elements regarded as essential for “life”.
So, it is hard to believe that the particular mix of conditions that resulted in “life” only occurred on Earth, and not on the trillions of other planets in the Universe.
But it remains to be seen whether this life is like bacteria, or is an exciting “technologically advanced civilization” we can communicate with.
A significant effort is underway to search for alien civilizations which may be using similar technologies to us, such as powerful radio telescopes sending out radio wavelength communications from distant planetary systems.
And then of course, it’s possible our definition of “life” may turn out to be quite narrow, and that aliens – wherever they are – may play by a completely different set of rules.
Helen Maynard-Casely, planetary scientist:
I’m of the opinion that it’s only a matter of time before we find something that resembles biology somewhere other than on Earth. This is because we’re increasingly finding various potential pockets in our solar system that may be hospitable to life as we know it.
For instance, consider the under-ice oceans of Europa and Ganymede (two of Jupiter’s large moons): these are places where the temperature is just right, there is access to water and to minerals, too. Then again, that’s viewing things with a very Earth-like lens, and of course alien life could be very different to our own.
That’s why I’m really excited about further exploration of Saturn’s moon Titan. Titan has a whole range of interesting molecules on its surface, as well as active weather systems to transport them about – this too, all within our solar system. And we know there are other solar systems within our galaxy.
Considering all of the above, it really does feel more and more inevitable that we will find a niche for some active biology somewhere. Whether it can say hello to us? Well, that’s a different question.
Rebecca Allen, space technology expert:
Yes, but they probably don’t look like us.
There are more than 100 billion planets estimated to exist in our galaxy alone (with some six billion potentially being Earth-like). Therefore, the probability that life exists elsewhere is all but confirmed.
When we hear the word “alien”, however, an image of a humanoid lifeform usually springs to mind. But even on Earth, the most predominant form of life is much older, smaller and more resilient.
I’m talking about microorganisms, of course. These organisms defy science by existing where life has no business existing, such as in the sludge around volcanic vents. I would bet alien life exists in the form of these “extremophiles”.
In fact, NASA just sent a team of tiny tardigrade (or “water bears”) astronauts to the International Space Station so that human astronauts can study how they perform in this extreme environment. With key ingredients for life being discovered in our Solar System, it seems probable Earth’s toughest lifeform are spread across the galaxy.
But what about more advanced life? The reality is space is vast. And from the Kepler mission we learned it’s hard to find other worlds, let alone identify one that resembles Earth. Add on the fact it took billions of years for advanced life to thrive on Earth, and there’s a slim chance of us finding a similar species of alien.
But hope remains, and scientists continue to use advanced radio telescopes to search the skies for new forms of radio communication.
Martin Van-Kranendonk, astrobiologist:
A simple answer to this question is no.
If we use purely empirical data and assume the question refers to any type of life outside of Earth that is not related to human activity, then the answer – as far as we know – must be no.
But, of course, our knowledge relating to this question is finite; we have not investigated every corner of the Universe for signs of life and we do not even know what may constitute life in another chemical system, as there is no agreed-on definition of carbon-based life even here on Earth.
So, perhaps, the more expanded answer is we do not know. In fact, we may never be able to definitively answer this question. But of course, there is much work being done in an effort to figure this out.
Perhaps one day we can know if we have nearby inter-planetary neighbors, or if indeed we are alone. Or perhaps we never will.
