As you develop him as a character, does it ever bother you that people reduce him to a strict set of traits based on earlier representations before that development happened? I'm curious to know your thoughts!

Maybe I'm too forgiving (nah) but little if not nothing of what I see I really qualify as "mischaracterization" - this is a blog, not a consistent work of writing or visual story-telling like a book or a movie. People might see one comic or drawing and assume x and y - and that's totally understandable and fine. The vast, vast majority of people I interact with are more than anything just curious about it and what the """canonical""" counterpart to their interpretation is. And I love that!

Also, I'm no stranger to the ancient practice of condensing a character down to their weirdest traits for the sake of a good punchline. And I love a good punchline, so I don't mind that either. I cackle every time someone describes my huge scarred up dude as "Babygirl" LOL

The only thing that bothers me is when people misunderstanding my intentions with the Orin storyline I concocted and then turn that into assumptions about me personally, but those are rare and far-between.

If there's two things I resent are A) my art was in a very transitional stage when the butt-grab comic got big, so I just wish It looked more in line with my current style 😂 and B) Chatting with people got a lot harder! I feel bad that I don't just reply to every since ask I get, but If I did that's all I would do. And my DMs are pretty much a lost cause.

Otherwise this has been really fun so far, it's been an immensely creatively fulfilling experience and I don't even know how to express how mind-blowing people's support and excitement toward my work has been.

have you ever noticed how part of c!jack’s character is he is obscure and nobody really knows him and how in the fandom he is also obscure and nobody really knows him

Jack Manifold was never really given the time of day. Sure, he had a small part in the server (ultimately the one who ended the whole thing), but his presence was not respected all that much. Placed into the lowest rank of L’Manberg’s cabinet, killed by Wilbur Soot for ‘not being seen’. He never got a REAL apology for that, by the way. I will stand by the fact that Wilbit’s apology to Jack was manipulative, half-assed, and more for himself than Jack’s wellbeing. It was well before the ‘Apology arc’ and THAT IN OF ITSELF shows just how little it actually meant to Wilbur. He was just doing it to make himself feel better and didn’t actually have Jack’s feelings in mind.

The biggest thing I see going around is Tommy being excused for what he did to Jack. Killing him when Jack went to visit him in the Nether during his Exile. Tommy has trauma. We all know that. He was a victim to extreme manipulation and abuse and a slew of other things. Yet he blatantly ignores every attempt, denies and/or doesn’t fully grasp that he did what he did. Which I can understand because the dude went through severe trauma, but that’s not an excuse. He still needs to take the accountability for his actions.

Jack deserves so much more than he’s ever gotten and it SHOWS. He literally wants friends. That’s it. He wants friend and companionship and he wants what he THOUGHT he had. Because he never actually had it. If he had it Wilbur wouldn’t have killed him, Tommy would actually listen, and he would be shown an ounce of respect for his own traumas and hardships when he tries to talk about it all. All everyone does is dismiss, downplay, and invalidate c!Jack’s pain. That’s a big reason why he’s the way he is! Every other attempt to let himself express his issues ends in him feeling worse about himself.

And we’ve seen time and time again that everyone else Jack tries to talk to and vent to takes Tommy’s side! (Ex: Puffy) There’s bias that Tommy can do no wrong and is the ‘savior’ of the smp. But even if he’s the ‘main protagonist’ doesn’t diminish he causes pain.

They give the excuse that Tommy was a child, that children should be protected and yada yada. Jack was more-or-less a child when he first joined, too! He should have the same excuses, the same treatment as all the other kids on the smp but he doesn’t because he was left alone and had to grow up faster.

He didn’t have anyone to lean against, so he just never let himself fall. And when he inevitably did no one cared or batted an eye because no one was there. He died 3 times and no one batted an eye.

The fandom is so bias sometimes. I’m not huge on DAMP fanfics that involve Jack because they mischaracterize him so much. Put him as a bully in School AUs, make him mean and rude for no reason. The reason in canon is because no one gave a single fuck about him. (not including Niki) Jack had a reason for being ‘cruel’, no one else did. It comes with the fact that Jack’s POV just isn’t as watched, so people don’t know his side of things. But what bothers me is that it feels like fans don’t even try to see stuff from his point of view. He was abused, manipulated, killed, and used in his own right. If everyone else gets excuses for the shit they did, he deserves it too.

Below is how I interpreted Jack’s ending, and how, despite everything he’s gone through, his character gets some sort of ending that isn’t completely angsty. I acknowledge that Jack isn’t the morally-perfect character, that he was fueled by anger and rage. He had a slight victim complex. But from a more basic pov, and for the fans who don’t really understand his character, I think he was redemptive. In his own right.

REDEMPTION:

From its literal definition Redemption is “An act of redeeming or atoning for a fault or mistake, or the state of being redeemed. deliverance; rescue.” The state of being redeemed comes in many shapes and sizes. Actions and words big and small. For some it may take great showings of purpose and selflessness. For others it can be as simple as “I’m sorry.”

Someone can go their whole entire lives fighting with something they ultimately in the end agree with. A lot of it is a matter of perspective. Jack only had one perspective.

Jack was alone for most of his life on the dsmp. Yes he had friends in the beginning but wars and betrayal had him distancing himself and trying to find ways to fix it. None ever worked. Because he was alone. When you only work with one perspective you don’t understand the other side, and how it might actually clear things up and switch your own views.

It only took Jack a matter of minutes after arguing with Tubbo for him to realize he didn’t have the whole picture. Someone so close to Tommy, someone who WAS there to see the other side of things. Someone Jack trusts and respects, who’d he call a friend, to listen and then fight him on his thoughts even if it was in the form of an argument. Though he fucked up and killed everyone, I think his actions of still attempting to save Tommy with Tubbo have given him a bit of redemption. Not all, everyone has faults. But he was on the path to healing when he died. If only for a few minutes.

Jack died by his own hands trying to right his wrong. If that’s not a symbolic Jack ending I don’t really know what is.

in other words he can be a passionate sap in regards to you, behind closed doors. he can wrapped up easily in things, so sometimes his passion can be mischaracterized as rage or annoyance but rest assured he's not angry with your existence

right in the middle of the "heart on the sleeve" and "cold and distant" thing, he feels he needs to keep up his image of powerful monster but he doesn't let you think at any moment that you're not important to him

F (FAMILY)-

i don't think he would want kids, and thats assuming he even can. in my au he was created by zalgo with the sole purpose to cause problems for people, i dont think zalgo was thinking about whether or not slenderman can reproduce when he making him

of course adoption is always an option, and who knows, maybe if you guys find some stray kid in the woods he might just take them in

this is where my take on slenderman strays a lot from the original since i personally think slenderman just. kicks kids out of the woods (which leads to them talking about him, which leads to slenderman being a known cryptid in universe) but thats mostly just me not wanting to dwell on child death + giving the dude some level of morals that at least somewhat align with the self loathing that comes with his "i dont want to eat people but i have to in order to survive" thing

despite what many may think, i feel like, at least with my hyper specific take on slenderman, i feel like he wouldnt want you to fight along side him or be a proxy. only time i can see him date a proxy or fellow kriller is if you were already one prior to the relationship. in my au, slenderman resents his own existence for being what he is, and if he could he WOULD choose to be something else; however he cant rewrite the laws of this universe or fight against his biological functions

like i can go on an entire tangent, but my au is still so scrambled around that im not entirely sure where to start or how im going to make it make sense, but i feel like he would much rather keep you by him and safe (and even then i feel like thats pushing it, sure hes more than capable of protecting you but what if something stronger than him comes and fucks shit up? not all the creepypasta characters are buddy buddy)

In general people who write characters OOC and unlikable and shitty to "get them out of the way" of whatever the ship is they're writing. Like at that point why are you including them. This isn't specific to OP fandom this is just a widespread problem in communities that write fic for fandom.

tbc taking characters into uglier or darker characterizations than their canon counterparts isn't always bad, in fact it's frequently fun and really interesting, I'm specifically talking about shallow mischaracterization to get Pesky Wimmin away from m/m ships. A widespread epidemic which plagues us all.

rise makes no sense in context of the novels at all and im just? if they were going to have tie-in novels they should have been used to progress character and relationship development, not create an alternate world that’s never going to be addressed. even putting aside gross mischaracterization the novels literally cannot be canon so they’re just published for? no good reason i can see? they could have prequels (seiji and jesse or harvard and aiden pre-series) or been about the team bonding/getting better at fencing, or focused on side characters that won’t get as much focus in the comics (eugene! if he’s mostly being side-lined in the comics the novels could have been his time to shine instead of him being even more sidelined. or even bobby and dante or kally and tanner). there’s definitely a lot of characters in the comics and if it was getting overwhelming the novels could have picked up that slack but they didn’t so their purpose mystifies me — there was also clearly no reason to have nicholas and seiji as pov characters in those books because srb (and i do adore all srb’s other work so this is hard for me to say) was terrible at writing them. when she was good she was good (which makes me think if there had been more editing the novels could have been better) but when she was bad she was very very bad. since she was even worse at writing eugene i guess i should be glad eugene didn’t have a pov. but seriously if the novels were mainly just haiden it could have just been haiden pov.

idk i just used to love fence so much and always noticed there was never a huge following for it, which is okay because the small fence fandom is great!! but i’ve always thought it could have had a bigger audience. there is so much promise in the first issues of fence — kings row competing against exton, the revelation of the truth about nicholas, the reactions and results from that, character development for all the main characters, relationship development for nichoji & haiden, the team actually Becoming a team & the idea of seiji nicholas and eugene being the fencing team after aiden and harvard graduate. but i feel like we’re never going to see any of that. page time is spent on things that aren’t as important instead, and then it takes ages for the next issue/volume and like you said it doesn’t feel coherent or connected to the other issues anymore. it confuses me that all the edges in fence r being sanded down and that the interesting promises in it are constantly being put off.

i’m sorry for talking about this sm i have not been successful in getting anyone into fence irl 😭 i hadn’t read rise or the novels until this month and i reread vol 1-4 before i read the new stuff and it made me very nostalgic

Hi again! lmfao dude no need to ever apologize to me for vents about Fence because I am forever pontificating about it. I agree that Fence has (or, rather, had) the potential to be really popular to a wide audience and I think you hit the nail on the head. And so much of it is just such easy fixes--like putting any effort into marketing lol or when releasing the compiled issues as volumes, giving them all distinct covers and names would have been SO helpful. Reusing the issue covers for the volumes was a mistake (and again, that's something marketing should have been all over!!). and the storyline. oh man. yeah. that ship has sailed and I've had mental breakdowns about it--but if we'd stayed true to the original concept of Fence and BOOM and Pacat put more effort into reaching a wider audience, it could have been big. Another consideration here, of course, is the content-to-hiatus ratio, which loses a ton of fans, but I maintain that if BOOM had their shit together, they could have fixed that problem too! and it's so frustrating

GOD RIGHT??? The novels came in, ruined Fence, and then aren't even actually canon because they don't actually fit in the universe??? My theory is that since Pacat is a SRB superfan, he kind of let her go overboard and realized after the novels were published and he had to move his story forward post-Disarmed that he'd fucked up giving so much freedom to her. Because they called it canon--and he still says it's '80% canon' but it couldn't have happened. So the point of the novels was basically for Pacat to read fanfiction from his favorite author of his OCs--it did nothing positive for the story, the characters, the franchise, or the fans. and LITERALLY!!! I've always thought doing a prequel for the tie-ins made more sense. Like following the fencing team with Harvard, Aiden, Kally, and Tanner would have been so fun, or focusing on Kally and Tanner or Bobby and Dante would have been fun and would have left room for actual plot progression!! It was pure selfishness on the authors' part to do the novels how they did them. And if Pacat would father fangirl over SRB than write a meaningful story, that's his right, but it still bugs me that there was clearly no thought given to the consequences of the novels. So instead of dealing with them, we ignore them and pretend that they're still '80% canon' to make ourselves feel better for our oopsie. hahaaa I have nothing nice to say about SRB or her writing. I don't think she got anything right in Fence--except for hinting Eugesse, which you know she only did because she knew it was popular in the fandom and she wanted the hype and baited us with it lmfao But! The classic character archetypes used smartly and effectively? I genuinely think it would have appealed to all the people who love Check Please and Heartstopper and Yuri on Ice. I‘m not a huge fan of the ship but I also don’t hate it. It’s a big hit or miss for me depending on how well the characters get portrayed. Sadly the fandom (especially the western half) tends to heavily mischaracterize both characters. I don‘t really care about shipping in general tho nor do I care which ship people like or don’t. So seeing ship art of them doesn’t bother me xD But what does bother me for some unexplainable reason is when people bring shipping stuff onto my posts. It just makes me incredibly uncomfortable. Every time I make a merch post featuring another character I can guarantee you that someone will reblog it under their ship tag. It can even be a ship that i like, but like it’s merchandise…There’s nothing shippy about it. Feel free to ship whoever you like but don’t use my posts from my own precious collection T~T I‘m happy that my post about the ID card could inspire a whole fanfic, but at the same time it makes me not want to look at it anymore. Especially since the fanfiction did actually make me uncomfortable. The writer was also like „blame this on a tumblr post where someone got kaiba’s ID card“ or something like that. My dude at least give proper credit to my post if it inspired you that much.

Hi no he did not do that

Yes he did do bad things, yes the things were bad, but he didn't rape or assault her, he did however be a creep and manipulate her.

Allow me to fully set the scene

So, Equius, 13 year old tween, he kinda has a crush on Aradia and by kinda hes sorta madly in love with her, and instead of being normal about it, because of the way he's raised, he is not normal about it.

He believes it's incredibly scandalous, but in that fucked up mind of his he's like, into it, because he despite how he's raised he's still nice in a fucked up way, the best way to describe it is "well intentioned"

So I suppose he figures "oh man I can't be in love with a *rust* blood thats like, bad, what if instead I made her into an indigo like me then I bet it'd be fine and not only that, I'm sure she would feel so much better with superior blood" (something like that its been a bit)

So session starts and he does his best attempt at being normal around Aradia and then fails entirely and ends up being a huge creep by having her do things that gets him all flustered and such. (more like borderline aroused but borderline aroused and 13 years old feels so wrong to put together i no no wanna word it that way)

Then comes the whole robot thing

Beat for beat (summarized with half okay memory)

"do you uh. feel any emotions."

"uhhh WH- what is this feeling. dude what the fuck."

(i honest to god forgot if it was aradia or equius that explained/realized the robot is programmed to love equius so moving on)

she then like. rips her heart out and starts beating up equius all the while he is profusely apologizing and then they kiss and its viscerally uncomfortable knowing aradia did not want this

So, yeah he did do bad things, but he is not some classist rapist, nothing sexual ever happened what. What he is, is a very well intentioned creep that is 13 and raised horribly. That does not absolve him of the horrible things he did I'm not defending his actions but that is such a colossal mischaracterization that I decided it's worth typing this up for.

He's bad, but not a rapist. He also literally never tried to hurt her physically.

SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS: A GUIDE FOR WRITERS.

hey i’m a mental health therapist and a writer here on tumblr dot com, back again with another “how to write mental health” guide! this time we’re talking about SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS! this is MY very specific wheelhouse because i do intensive outpatient work for a substance use disorder treatment agency!

i have seen SO MANY gross mischaracterizations of addictions on tumblr, specifically within the indie roleplay community, from demonizing addicts to misinterpreting addiction to calling their “has a glass of sometimes after work and blacked out once after one night of drinking” little dudes alcoholics. for the purpose of this post, i’m going to try and stick to the CLINICAL side of addiction because there’s a pretty huge addiction recovery/sobriety culture that is incredibly lovely and supportive but it can get convoluted with all the different programs there are out there.

now, let’s start with what makes a substance use disorder a substance use disorder. a substance use disorder is any sort of PROBLEMATIC USE OF A SUBSTANCE THAT INTERFERES WITH DAILY LIFE AND DAILY FUNCTIONS. depending on the specific substance the diagnostic criteria looks a little different but all substance use disorders diagnoses more or less follow the following criteria ( pulled from the opioid use disorder criteria in the DSM-5 ): 

a problematic pattern of [drug/alcohol] use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress, as manifested by at least 2 of the following, occurring within a 12-month period:

[drug/alcohol] are often taken in larger amounts or over a longer period than was intended.

there is a persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control [drug/alcohol] use.

a great deal of time is spent in activities necessary to obtain the [drug/alcohol], use the [drug/alcohol], or recover from its effects.

note: THESE DO NOT JUST INCLUDE ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES. i’ve had clients with alcohol use disorders wake up early and hang around the gas station until it opens at 7am to get their first 12-packs for the day, go through great lengths to hide alcohol from spouses, stash alcohol around their work spaces so they can drink periodically throughout the day, etc. not necessarily illegal, definitely problematic.

craving or a strong desire or urge to use [drug/alcohol].

recurrent [drug/alcohol] use resulting in a failure to fulfill major role obligations at work, school, or home.

continued [drug/alcohol] use despite having persistent or recurrent social or interpersonal problems caused or exacerbated by the effects of [drug/alcohol].

note: ask yourself here how your character’s relationships are effected by their drug/alcohol use.

important social, occupational, or recreational activities are given up or reduced because of [drug/alcohol] use.

recurrent [drug/alcohol] in situations in which it is physically hazardous.

continued [drug/alcohol] despite knowledge of having a persistent or recurrent physiological ( physical--think of the body reactions ) or psychological problem that is likely to have been caused or exacerbated by the substance.

tolerance, as defined by either of the following:

a need for markedly increased amounts of [drug/alcohol] to achieve intoxication or desired effect.

a markedly diminished effect with continued use of the same amount of [drug/alcohol].

withdrawal.

debunking some common themes i see across the writing community:

SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS ARE, MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, A RESPONSE TO COMPLEX TRAUMA. i’ve been in this field for 4 years and 99% of the clients i have seen have experienced some degree of trauma. getting absolutely plastered and high is a damn effective way to check out when someone is experiencing chronic trauma and doesn’t want to deal with the overwhelming emotions that come with it. 

SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS ARE, MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, CO-MORBID WITH OTHER MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS. similar to the above point, checking out with drugs and alcohol is a damn good way to forget how shit your brain is.

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER/ADDICTION AND CASUAL DRUG AND ALCOHOL USE. if your character smokes weed at the end of the day, or takes prescription pain pills for chronic pain as prescribed, or goes to the occasional party with their friends on the weekends, or drops acid at a rave, and these things are otherwise not interfering with their lives--that’s not an addiction. that’s casual drug and alcohol use and it’s fine. people are allowed to let loose sometimes.

PLEASE TRY TO STRAY AWAY FROM DEMONIZING A CHARACTER WITH A SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER. a big part of treatment is processing the “why” while also acknowledging that your actions related to your substance abuse have affected others. that does not mean people who are struggling with addiction are less deserving of love and compassion. the reality of addiction is that yes, a lot of folks with an addiction do have very strained relationships and have done unsavory things while in their active addiction. if you come at it from the perspective of “this person is dealing with strong internal turmoil” though, how does your portrayal of your character change? how do their internal monologues change?

CONSIDER WHY YOUR CHARACTER IS TRYING TO CHECK OUT WITH DRUGS AND ALCOHOL. what’s going on in the ol’ coconut that they’re struggling to deal with? alternatively or in addition, do they have something going on PHYSICALLY that they’re trying to deal with, like chronic pain? common feelings associated with people who are in their active addiction are anger, anxiety, grief, self-loathing, depression, sadness, fear--i assume you know feeling words if you’re a writer so i’ll stop there.

NOT ALL ADDICTS ENGAGE IN CRIMINAL ACTIVITY AND EVEN IF THEY DO, THEY ARE NO LESS DESERVING OF LOVE AND COMPASSION. i work primarily with court ordered clients with high criminogenic risk factors. i have groups full of felons and they are some of the loveliest, kindest people i have ever met. similar to substance use disorders, criminality can be a response to trauma. a teen who is growing up in a loving stable home isn’t going to turn to gang activity, an adult with healthy relationships and coping skills isn’t going to hold up gas stations or get into dealing drugs. people are just people. similar to the above point, if your character is engaging in criminal activity, ask yourself why they would be and see if that changes the way you portray them.

So I just got two baby rats after taking a break from keeping them consistently since 2013 and it's a good opportunity to lay out the actual cost of getting new rats. They're unassumingly expensive and definitely are not an impulse buy. The only reason I could get them at such short notice is I already had a lot of the base costs covered like bedding, a few toys, and most importantly the enclosure. I'm also pretty financially stable, so the follow up costs were something I already had in place--they're expensive!

Let's break down the cost of day 1, bringing them home. The rats themselves were $25 each, but buy 1 get 1 half off, bringing the total to $37.50. However, they also needed more bedding, a hide, food, and a carrier which quickly adds up. In total, it cost $170 to bring them home w the bare minimum. If I also needed a cage, that total would have been closer to $300 for the smallest appropriate size for 2 rats.

One of the rats had an upper respiratory infection that I spotted immediately upon picking her up. Most rats are already born with the causal organism (mycoplasma) and the rest tend to pick it up from litter mates. Assume you will need a vet visit in the first week to take care of these early URIs (we went today!).

My vet charges $85 for an exotic exam--exotics are usually anything outside of standard dogs and cats, so expect exotic prices for any small pet. I scheduled their appointment the next day after bringing them home (Monday) and had them examined by today (Thursday). These appointments can't wait or else the URI may result in lifelong complications! The vet saw both but only felt the sick rat needed the full exam, so I only had one of the $85 exam fees. Since she needed antibiotics, I also had to pay for 2 prescriptions (this is where the real cost comes in). The vet total came to $210 and both rats are on a 10 day antibiotic regimen. I also picked up several types of baby food to mix the medicine in for around $8.

I also needed ledges and hammocks for their enclosure, which roughly came to $50. I need more than that, so I expect the final total to be around $150. I'll also transition them to a healthier food than they've been eating, but it's pricey as well at around $30 a bag.

So let's tally the cost of 4 days of rat ownership with a relatively stocked starting point.

Rats: $37.50

Initial supplies: $132.50

Cage accessories: $50

Baby food: $8

Vet care: $210

Total cost: $438

So the initial cost of these animals was NOT the sticker on the cage ($37.50), but a whopping $438. I also still need at least $100 more worth of cage pieces and maybe another $100 for replacement trays for their cage's shelves. I very well expect to run upwards of $600 to get them at an acceptable level of care.

ALL of these are mandatory for a healthy rat. We can't skip any of these basic care requirements. Rodents are mischaracterized as "easy low cost pets", but all of them have these huge costs just to have a basic enriching set up. My guinea pigs have the same story and so do all my past hamsters. They're a commitment both emotionally and financially and it's important to have these things lined up when you bring a little dude home!

since we're all discussing about gojo currently, i am asking you of your humble opinion of what kind of person gojo would be like if he was ever close to someone, family-wise/sibling-wise/son-wise asking for research purposes but also of my crippling fear of accidentally mischaracterizing one of gege-sensei's unique characters but thats besides the point jkdsdskdfh

Wanna preface this by saying that I'm just one dude with his own interpretation of the character, so you're welcome to take what I say with a grain of salt. If you're writing, write what feels comfortable to you when you think of the character.

Typically when I think of how Gojo would act around people that he cares about, I reference back to his interactions with Geto, Shoko, and Riko a lot. He's incredibly observant when he wants to be, so if he has a reason to notice that someone he cares for is upset, he'll try to fix it. Even if its just a short-term solution, even if that solution comes at a cost to his own comfort.

With Riko, he's willing to sacrifice sleep and run himself ragged just so that she experiences even one more day as a teenager with a life that's fully her own to live. He messes with her and pranks her, but most importantly, he makes her laugh. He makes sure that if this truly is her last chance to make memories, then they're going to be good ones. A few hours of sleep for him becomes trivial in exchange.

This is also the first instance that we get his sense of justice for other people's lives taking precedent over his standing with the higher-ups. He's the one that proposes defying orders and fighting Tengen just to keep Riko safe, which would have definitely gotten him and Geto into a ton of trouble, if not outright ended with them being labeled as Curse Users. Tengen is the foundation of their society, but he doesn't care because he and Geto are the Strongest and he knows that Riko doesn't deserve the fate that she's been assigned, so why wouldn't the rebel for her?

So I'd say he's the kind of person to strive for the the happiness of his loved ones, even if that means annoying them or putting himself on the line to do so.

Think of Megumi here as well. Keeping the potential (and rightful) head of the Zen'in Clan away from them just because that's what Megumi wants most definitely wasn't an easy task, but he does so anyway. While I personally don't think they have an incredibly close relationship, I think that Gojo understands that Megumi doesn't want him to act as a surrogate family member for him. So he doesn't. Instead, he nudges Megumi in the direction of building his own relationships at his own pace and brings him out of his comfort zone by messing with him. If it gets a smile or a sense of happiness that he's never privvy to, then that's fine. They're not for him.

With Geto, we get to see Gojo when he's truly comfortable with someone. He doesn't worry about putting on a front of being the strongest and lets himself truly relax as a result. I think Geto and Shoko are the only people that we've seen this side of him with. He lets Geto into his space and feels safe in showing his actual emotions to him because he trusts Geto to safeguard that kind of vulnerability.

With both Shoko and Geto, we also get a brief moment where he comes to them to help him improve himself. Seeing his forced isolation later on in the manga, this is a huge deal when it comes to his character and shows that he's willing to rely on other people to help him so long as he trusts them to not take advantage of his "weaknesses." Then later on, with Shoko, he puts his faith in her to help him keep Yuuji hidden from the higher-ups. So he's willing to rely on others, he's just picky on who he gives that privilege too, which is understandable given what he's been through.

Last point I wanna touch on is Gojo's last interaction with Geto because I think it's the softest that we've ever seen him. He's angry at first, he's fully prepared to confront Geto with all of the hurt that he feels, but when he actually sees Geto and the state that he's in, all of that gets pushed to the side in exchange for comforting him (to get a clear look of what I'm talking about, feel free to go back and look at his expressions through their conversation in chapter 0.4) and when Geto says something to annoy him, he falls back into the same role that they had while they were students. He shows his annoyance, he jokes with him, because he never held a grudge against him. He always cared for him and never stopped caring for him, which is why he makes him smile in his last moments.

This is also probably why he doesn't let them cremate Geto's body as if he's just another unfortunate sorcerer that died for the sake of their duty to protect non-sorcerers. That's not what Geto would have wanted, that's everything that Geto was fighting against, and Gojo is going to give him that last dignity in whatever way he can. (He also probably couldn't bring himself to truly let Geto go, which makes sense when you think about him still labeling him as his best friend --his one and only-- after a decade of being apart.)

This is also why he's so upset when he sees Kenjaku for the first time. Because despite his efforts to bring Geto peace and to do right by him, that sentiment was ultimately twisted and used against him. It's a moment of his status within the world being used to harm the people that he loves just to get to him and his reaction to that is grief and anger.

He also isn't the type of person to let the people that he cares about go. He doesn't distance himself from them emotionally once they're gone from his life and he doesn't think negatively of them in their absence. He feels deeply about people and the lives that they should have. Having their happiness and safety ruined are harsh blows to his own emotional and mental well-being, but ultimately he'll use those tragedies as fuel toward strengthening his own beliefs in a world where those sacrifices aren't necessary anymore.

I feel like I've talked way too much though, so I'll close this off by saying that Gojo is incredibly sympathetic under his facade of emotional distance. His lack of empathy will mean that he messes up and that he doesn't quite connect with how his actions effect others, but that doesn't mean that he won't notice and understand those emotions when they're present.
