Your Guide to Finding the Best Emergency Dental Care in Scottsdale
Tumblr media
Introduction:
When dental emergencies strike, finding the best care quickly is essential. In Scottsdale, where health and wellness are a priority, having a reliable dentist who can handle emergencies is vital for your peace of mind and overall health. This guide will provide detailed information about what makes a great emergency dentist, the services they offer, and why regular dental care is crucial for avoiding emergencies in the first place.
In the vibrant city of Scottsdale, where health and wellness are integral to the community's lifestyle, ensuring access to top-notch dental care is essential—especially when emergencies arise. Dental emergencies can be sudden and severe, requiring immediate attention to alleviate pain, prevent further damage, and restore oral health. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the essentials of finding the best emergency dental care in Scottsdale, understanding the vital role of a dentist, and the importance of routine dental care in preventing emergencies.
What is a Dentist?
A dentist is a healthcare provider who specializes in diagnosing, preventing, and treating conditions related to your teeth, gums, and mouth. Regular visits to the dentist are crucial not just for maintaining oral health but also for reducing the risk of serious health issues like heart disease and stroke. A dentist’s role goes beyond just treating cavities; they are your primary care providers for all things related to oral health.
Are Dentists Considered Doctors?
Yes, dentists are considered doctors. In the United States, a person aspiring to become a dentist must first complete an undergraduate degree, followed by four years of rigorous training at an accredited dental school. This education equips them with the knowledge and skills necessary to diagnose and treat a wide variety of oral health conditions, from simple cavities to complex surgical procedures.
DDS vs. DMD: Understanding the Difference:
If you live in the U.S., you may notice two different titles following a dentist’s name: DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) and DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine or Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry). Despite the difference in names, both DDS and DMD degrees entail the same training and qualifications. The distinction is primarily due to the preference of the degree-granting university. Regardless of the title, both types of dentists are equally qualified to perform a full range of dental procedures, from routine cleanings to complex surgeries.
What Services Do Dentists Offer?
Dentists offer a wide array of services that can be broadly categorized into three main areas: preventive dentistry, restorative dentistry, and emergency dental care. Understanding these categories can help you better appreciate the comprehensive care provided by your dentist and why regular visits are essential.
Preventive Dentistry:
Preventive dentistry is the cornerstone of maintaining good oral health. By preventing dental issues before they start, you can avoid the discomfort, inconvenience, and cost of more extensive treatments. Preventive dentistry includes:
Dental Exams: Regular check-ups allow your dentist to monitor your oral health and catch potential issues early.
Dental X-rays: These imaging tests help detect problems that aren’t visible during a standard examination, such as cavities between teeth or issues with the jawbone.
Cleanings: Professional cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup that can lead to cavities and gum disease.
Sealants: Protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to prevent decay.
Fluoride Treatments: Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel, making it more resistant to decay.
Restorative Dentistry:
Restorative dentistry focuses on repairing or replacing damaged or missing teeth. Whether due to decay, injury, or wear, restorative procedures can restore both the function and aesthetics of your teeth. Common restorative procedures include:
Fillings: Used to repair cavities or minor fractures in teeth.
Crowns: Caps that cover and protect a damaged tooth, restoring its shape and strength.
Bridges: Fixed prosthetics that replace one or more missing teeth, anchored to the surrounding teeth.
Dental Implants: A long-term solution for missing teeth, involving the surgical placement of a titanium post in the jawbone, topped with a natural-looking crown.
Emergency Dental Care:
Dental emergencies can happen at any time and often require immediate attention to prevent further damage and alleviate severe pain. Many dentists in Scottsdale offer 24/7 emergency care for issues such as:
Tooth Extractions: Removing a tooth that is severely damaged or infected to prevent the spread of infection.
Root Canals: Treating an infected or abscessed tooth by removing the damaged tissue inside the tooth and sealing it.
Knocked-Out Teeth: Replacing teeth that have been completely dislodged, which requires quick action for the best chance of saving the tooth.
Understanding Dental Specialties:
While general dentists provide a broad range of services, some choose to specialize in specific areas of dental care, requiring additional training and education. These specialties allow dentists to offer more focused and advanced care for particular issues. Here are some of the most common dental specialties:
Pediatric Dentistry (Pedodontics): Focuses on the unique dental needs of children, adolescents, and teens.
Orthodontics: Specializes in aligning teeth and jaws, often using braces, clear aligners, and retainers to correct bite issues.
Endodontics: Focuses on root canal therapy and other treatments involving the inner tissues of the teeth.
Periodontics: Specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of gum disease and other conditions affecting the tissues surrounding the teeth.
Prosthodontics: Involves the creation of dental prosthetics, such as crowns, bridges, and dentures, to restore function and aesthetics.
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: Treats complex issues related to the jaws, face, and mouth, including wisdom tooth removal and corrective jaw surgery.
Cosmetic Dentistry: Focuses on improving the appearance of your smile through treatments such as teeth whitening, veneers, and gum contouring.
Implant Dentistry: Specializes in placing dental implants, a popular and long-term solution for missing teeth.
When to See a Dentist:
It’s important to see a dentist whenever you experience new or concerning symptoms, as early intervention can prevent more serious problems. Common signs that you need to schedule a dental appointment include:
oothache: Persistent pain can indicate a cavity, infection, or other issues that require attention.
Swollen or Bleeding Gums: These symptoms can be signs of gum disease, which can lead to tooth loss if untreated.
Chipped or Broken Teeth: Damaged teeth can be vulnerable to further injury or decay.
Teeth Sensitivity: Increased sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures can be a sign of enamel erosion or other dental problems.
Jaw Pain: Pain in the jaw can be a sign of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders or other issues.
Persistent Bad Breath: Chronic bad breath, or halitosis, can be a sign of gum disease or other underlying issues.
Sores or Lumps in Your Mouth: Any unusual growths or sores should be evaluated by a dentist to rule out oral cancer or other serious conditions.
Dealing with Dental Anxiety:
Dental anxiety is a common issue that can prevent people from seeking the care they need. If you’re nervous about visiting the dentist, it’s important to communicate your concerns. Many dentists offer sedation options to help you stay comfortable during procedures, ranging from mild sedatives to help you relax to general anesthesia for more complex or lengthy treatments. By discussing your anxiety with your dentist, you can work together to find a solution that ensures you receive the care you need without undue stress.
Conclusion:
Your oral health is directly linked to your overall well-being, making regular dental care essential. Whether you need preventive care, restorative treatments, or emergency dental services, finding the right dentist in Scottsdale can make all the difference. By prioritizing your oral health through regular check-ups and seeking out the best emergency care when needed, you can ensure that your smile remains healthy, bright, and beautiful for years to come.
In a city like Scottsdale, where health and wellness are part of the lifestyle, choosing a dentist who offers comprehensive care—including emergency services—provides peace of mind knowing that your oral health is in expert hands. So, make your oral health a priority and take the first step towards a healthier, happier smile today.

Undescended Testes In Children
Tumblr media
The male sexual glands are the testes, and they produce sperm and hormones for sexual reproduction. The testes typically reside in the scrotum, occasionally one or both testes may not descend into the scrotum after developing, which means that when the testis is outside its normal location in the scrotal sac, it is called an undescended testis. This condition normally occurs before birth.
What causes a child to have undescended testes?
Early-born infants are more likely to have undescended testes (preterm or premature babies). This is due to the fact that the testes do not descend into the scrotal sac until month 7 of a baby’s development in the uterus. Other factors contributing to undescended testes could be spina bifida or hormonal issues.
Testicles may shift up and down from the scrotum back into the groin as a reflex, which could be the root of the problem (retractile testes). The testicles can sometimes be absent. Rarely, a child who has had an inguinal hernia repaired may experience undescended testes.
Which children are most likely to have undescended testes?
An estimated 3 in 100 to 1 in 20 male infants are born with this disease.
A child is more vulnerable if:
Born before 37 weeks of pregnancy
Tiny for the gestational age
With low birth weight
Has a family member suffered from the condition
What are the different categories of undescended testes?
Congenital and acquired undescended testes are two different categories.
Congenitally undescended testes:
Congenitally undescended testes are present in newborns who are born without scrotal testes.
Most of the time, doctors are unable to identify the cause; however, some hormone and genetic problems can result in undescended testes.
The testes might not have had enough time to descend into the scrotum by the time premature babies are born.
Acquired undescended testes:
Sometimes a child’s testicles are in the scrotum when they are born, but they later grow undescended testes.
The spermatic cord stops expanding at the same rate that the kid does. It becomes too short in the end and forces the testis back into the groin.
Between the ages of one and ten, this can occur.
What signs would a child have of undescended testes?
Each youngster may exhibit somewhat different symptoms. The most typical symptom is when a doctor performing an examination cannot feel the testes. Most kids who have an undescended testicle don’t exhibit any symptoms.
How are children’s undescended testes identified?
The doctor will inquire about your child’s symptoms and medical background. He or she might also inquire about the medical history of your family. Every time your child receives a well-child checkup, the healthcare expert will look for testicles in the scrotum. To locate the testicles within the pelvis, imaging procedures like an MRI or an ultrasound may occasionally be required.
When to visit a doctor
Your maternal and child health nurse or your doctor will notice if your child has undescended testes shortly after birth. The health of your infant will be monitored.
Consult your doctor if one or both of your baby’s testicles disappear from the scrotum after they were present there at birth. You’ll be given a paediatrician or paediatric surgeon’s contact information to consult, as the testes must be brought all the way down to the scrotum.
There is a risk of ongoing health issues, as below, if the testes do not come down:
Torsion – It is possible for the spermatic cord to twist, which can stop the blood flow to the testes.
Inguinal Hernia – when a bowel loop enters the scrotum.
Reduced fertility – The production of sperm in the testes may be impacted by the fact that the body temperature in the abdomen is higher than in the scrotum.
Risk of testicular cancer This only occurs in a small percentage of boys. Typically, the risk is less than 1 in 100.
Poor self-esteem due to having genital features that are unusual.
How are children with undescended testes treated?
Your child’s symptoms, age, and overall health will all affect the course of treatment. Furthermore, it will depend on how serious the problem is. By the age of three months, the testes frequently fall into the scrotum on their own. The testicles often pass naturally by the time a child is 6 months old.
Other situations might call for treatment. This might comprise:
Surgery: Surgery may be used to transfer the undescended testicle into the scrotal sac. Orchiopexy is the name of this procedure. usually between the ages of 6 and 18 months. For most kids, it works.
Hormone treatment: The body may produce testosterone in response to some hormones. The testes are assisted in entering the scrotal sac by this. Only certain circumstances call for this treatment. Speak with your child’s medical professionals about the advantages, disadvantages, and potential adverse effects of each medication.
Find out what kind of treatment is recommended for your child by speaking with their healthcare professional.
Follow-up after the treatment of undescended testes
After the procedure, your child’s surgeon will schedule a visit with them. To ensure the testicle stays in the scrotum, routine inspections may be required. When they reach adolescence, your child will need to learn how to perform a routine testicular self-examination.
If you have any more questions about undescended testes, you are always welcome to get an appointment with Dr. Prashant Jain, one of the finest young and dynamic pediatric surgeon and pediatric urologist in Delhi.

Colorectal Cancer
Tumblr media
A very common form of cancer that usually begins as polyps (growths) in the colon’s lining. Through the diagnostic tests and appropriate treatment techniques, the medical specialists can identify and eliminate cancerous polyps. Categorized among the most prevalent cancer kinds, if not treated well, colon cancer can spread to other parts of the body that can worsen the body condition. With the tests for early detection and applying innovative treatments, the death risks from this kind of cancer are reduced. Certain types of polyps may transform into cancer with time, however, but not all polyps will become cancerous.
Understanding Colorectal Cancer
We can describe Colorectal Cancer as a type of cancer that usually begins in the colon (large intestinal tract), the long tube that carries digested food to your rectum, and then out of your body. Basically, colorectal cancer is a result of specific polyps or tumors that grow through the colon’s lining. The doctors usually suggest screening tests to detect precancerous polyps before they turn into malignant growths. Essentially, the Colorectal Cancer that isn’t detected or treated could result in spreading to other parts of the body. Proper screening tests for early detection and an appropriate treatment lowers the risk of death from colon cancer.
Colorectal Cancer Stages
After the patient undergoes the colon cancer diagnosis, the doctor may suggest some additional tests to determine the severity of the tumor, which is termed as the cancer stage. Considering the stage of the cancer developed in the patient’s body is necessary to prepare for the treatment strategy.
The staging tests may include the scans of the pelvis, abdomen and chest. Through the imaging tests, the doctors may capture images from the inside of your body and analyze them to find the actual location and size of the tumor. However, in some severe cases, the doctor may even require surgery procedures to determine the cancer stage.
Talking about the Colon cancer stages, it usually varies between 0 and 4, where the lowest number indicates that the cancer is confined to the colon’s lining. However, stage 4 depicts the spread of the disease to different parts within the body. To curb the disease spread, we advise all our readers to seek medical assistance without delays, if they face any colon cancer symptoms.
Risk Factors
Listed below are few risk factors that can lead to colorectal cancer in a human body:
Cancer In Family History:
Having a blood relation with someone who was diagnosed by colon cancer increases the chance of developing colon cancer.
Personal History of Polyps:
The presence of colon polyps already in the body may increase the chance of developing colon cancer.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease:
Conditions causing pain or an increase in the size of the stomach can cause inflammatory bowel disorders as this may increase the chance of developing colon cancer.
Genetic Disorders:
Certain DNA mutations increase the chance of developing colon cancer as the most frequent inherited disorders increase the risk of colon cancer.
Other Factors
Not Exercising Regularly
Diabetes
Obesity
Smoking
Alcohol consumption
Processed meat consumption  —————->
Common Symptoms
Listed down here are a few symptoms that a person may commonly suffer if they have this illness:
Blood while passing stool:
The person must immediately seek medical help if they find blood while passing stool. However, not necessarily the presence of blood in poop indicates you’re suffering from colon cancer, other factors like hemorrhoids, anal tears and eating beets, may make your poop appear different. However, it’s best to speak with a health doctor whenever you notice blood on or in your stool.
Consistent change in your bowel habits:
If a person suffers from frequent constipation or diarrhea or feels like visiting a bathroom after having gone already, then advise you for medical assistance immediately.
Abdominal Discomfort:
Since pain in your belly area can trigger because of numerous reasons, but if the pain isn’t going away or becomes unbearable, speak to a physician if you notice such discomfort.
Bloated Stomach:
There are numerous factors that cause you to feel bloated, but if your belly feels bloated for longer than two weeks, consulting a doctor immediately is recommended before the situation gets worse.
Others:
Unexplained Weight Loss
Vomiting
Weakness or tiredness
Fatigue and feeling short of breath
decreased appetite
constipation
diarrhea
Diagnosis
Listed below are the Colorectal Cancer diagnosis procedures that your doctor may follow to understand the nature of the tumor:
Using scope to analyze the colon:
Colonoscopy employs a long flexible and slender tube connected to an electronic camera and a monitor that provides a clear vision of the entire colon and the rectum. Using some surgical instruments, the doctors can take tissue samples to remove polyps.
Removal of a sample tissue to test:
The doctors follow a biopsy method to take a sample of tissue to analyze its status. The lab tests can reveal whether they are in fact cancerous as well as how fast they are expanding, however, other tests can provide additional details about the cancerous cells. The results will let the doctor analyze the prognosis of your case and formulate an appropriate treatment strategy.
Blood Tests:
The blood tests are done by the doctors to gather the details about the patient’s general health, including the liver and kidney function or even determining the decrease in red blood cells.
Treatment Options
Mentioned below are some of the treatment options that a doctor will suggest you if you are diagnosed with colon cancer.
Surgery
The doctors may use surgical methods to remove cancerous parts of the bowel and based on the severity of the procedure, the two sides of the bowel can be stitched to each other. If the tumor is present on the lower part of the rectum, then there might not be enough bowel remaining to connect and the situation demands for colonostomy.
Chemotherapy
Another therapy involves chemotherapy which describes a treatment with anti-cancer medications, prescribed to destroy or stop cancerous cells by destroying their cells so that they don’t expand and divide.
Radiotherapy
As the treatment employs X-rays with high energy, it is designed specifically for you to ensure that the cancerous cells are destroyed in the minimal amount of harm on normal tissue. This is mainly used in Rectal cancer treatment.
Lifestyle Changes For Prevention
To prevent any such illness from trapping you, we advise you to make a little lifestyle changes in your routine as we mentioned below:
In essence, you should try to maintain an appropriate weight that will lower the risk of developing other illnesses also. Talk to your physician about what a healthy weight you should be at.
Regularly exercising for around twenty minutes is recommended every day to prevent yourself from becoming cancerous.
Making healthy choices in your eating is another way to improve general health. But, there isn’t one specific diet you should adhere to beat cancer, however discussing your diet with your doctor could benefit you greatly.
Stop making negative lifestyle choices and quit smoking tobacco. If you’re a cigarette smoker, you should visit your doctor to help you establish a plan to stop smoking and kick the habit.
Recommended to avoid processed red meat and alcohol consumption. ———->
In case of any chronic disease like inflammatory bowel disease, continue monitoring and treatment ———->
SCREENING GUIDELINES FOR COLORECTAL CANCERS
Screening guidelines for colorectal cancer typically vary depending on the recommending organization and the individual’s risk factors. However, there are some general guidelines that are commonly followed:
Age to Start Screening: Screening for colorectal cancer usually begins at age 45 for individuals at average risk, although some guidelines previously recommended starting at age 50. However, those with certain risk factors, such as a family history of colorectal cancer or certain genetic syndromes, may need to start screening earlier.
Screening Methods: There are several screening methods available for colorectal cancer. These include:
Colonoscopy: This is considered the gold standard for colorectal cancer screening. It involves the insertion of a flexible tube with a camera into the colon to look for abnormalities or polyps. Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT): This test checks for blood in the stool, which can be a sign of colorectal cancer. It is done by collecting a stool sample at home and sending it to a lab for analysis.
Stool DNA Test (sDNA): This test looks for certain DNA markers in the stool that may indicate the presence of colorectal cancer or precancerous polyps.
Flexible Sigmoidoscopy: Similar to a colonoscopy, but only examines the lower part of the colon.
Virtual Colonoscopy (CT Colonography): This is a non-invasive imaging test that uses CT scans to create images of the colon and rectum.
Frequency of Screening: The frequency of screening depends on the method used and the individual’s risk factors. For example:
Colonoscopy is usually recommended every 10 years for average-risk individuals.
FIT is typically done annually.
Flexible sigmoidoscopy may be done every 5 years.
Virtual colonoscopy may be done every 5 years.
Follow-Up: If abnormalities or polyps are found during screening, follow-up procedures such as biopsies or polyp removal may be necessary. The follow-up frequency depends on the findings and the individual’s risk factors.

Laparoscopy Gastrectomy In HSR Layout, Bangalore | Dr. Manas Tripathy
A tumor in a stomach may need part of the stomach to be removed. In order for a surgeon to do that, he or she needs to know the precise location of the tumor inside the stomach. The
surgeon
also needs to see the tumor in order to decide how much (or maybe all) of the stomach has to be resected or removed. The doctors will discuss with you beforehand.
Symptoms of Stomach Tumour
Nausea, vomitingAbdominal painWeight loss, weaknessThe above symptoms do not necessarily indicate the presence of a tumor. However further tests may establish that. Non-surgical treatment like radiotherapy or chemotherapy is generally ineffective in managing stomach cancer and
surgery
is usually required. If the tumor spreads beyond the stomach, the oncologist will discuss other treatment options for you.
Before Laparoscopic Gastrectomy
Patients will be subject to several tests and examinations before the procedure. These can include standard blood tests, urine analysis, endoscopy (the doctor looks down your throat by inserting a small telescope attached to a camera, barium swallow x-ray, a nuclear medicine scan and a CT Scan of the abdomen. Some regular medications may have to be stopped one week prior to the operation. Smokers and drinkers will also have to cease their vices.
Laparoscopic Gastrectomy
The procedure is similar to all other
laparoscopic procedures
. The surgeon makes 4-5 small incisions on the abdomen and inserts a narrow tube (port) in one of the incisions. The surgeon releases a gas (mostly carbon dioxide) into the abdomen through another incision. As a result, the abdomen is inflated so the surgeon can better see the interior on camera. The laparoscope is a tiny telescope attached to a camera, which is inserted into the abdomen through the port. The camera transmits the internal images on a television screen.
Surgical instruments are inserted through the rest of the incisions, which are used to remove the part of the stomach where the tumor is located. The surgeon then expands one of the incisions and removes the part, which is kept in a plastic bag. If the entire stomach has been removed or it is no longer functional, the surgeon attaches the small intestine directly to the esophagus with surgical staplers, so that the patient can eat again. The carbon dioxide and other instruments are now removed through the incisions, which are closed with stitches, steri-strips or glue-like bandages.
Complications of Gastrectomy
Gastrectomy has the potential to manifest the following complications and perhaps others not mentioned below:
Infection of the skin at one of the small ports sitesLeakage of the connection between the stomach and small bowelCollection of pus inside your abdomen (intra-abdominal abscess)Postoperative ileus (the intestines slow down/stop working for several days)Small bowel obstruction (kinking of the small bowel, causing blockage)Pneumonia

WHUMPTOBER DAY 3: “WHO DID THIS TO YOU?”
This is the next chronological piece of Do No Harm, continued directly from this chapter.
Tag list: @whumpervescence  @shiningstarofwinter @distinctlywhumpthing @whumptywhumpdump
WARNINGS: Medical procedures, referenced/implied noncon, slavery setting, the usual.
The young doctor seems a bit skittish and far less cruel than the other Facility employees, and that comes with the dangerous notion that perhaps he doesn’t plan on hurting him. But that notion requires a naivety of which Jaime is no longer capable. He, of all people, is aware that cruelty can disguise itself in many shapes and sizes. Just because it isn’t obvious doesn’t mean it isn’t there, and that only makes it all the more dangerous.
There’s no use in hoping either way, he decides. Dr. Tate will either hurt him or he won’t, will either touch him or he won’t, and Jaime can’t — won’t — react. He has already made that mistake once today and will certainly pay for it later in ways he doesn’t want to think about now. He would do well to remember that he doesn’t hold any power here. Not in this room, this building, this life. And that, despite any arbitrary written rules, Dr. Tate is free to do as he pleases.
At least he had removed the restraints from his mouth and wrists. Jaime can console himself with this small mercy.
Those had always been the worst part of nights with Mr. Torley, on the all-too-frequent occasions he decided to use them. He was clearly very into them, and even more into Jaime’s fear of them. In addition to the claustrophobia they stoked in him, the use of restraints in bed had always felt something like a mockery. What use was it to restrain someone who can’t fight back regardless? The binds on his wrists and ankles were nothing more than accessories. The shackles in his mind did all the work to keep him still. And Mr. Torley knew that.
He does his best not to think about that now. Not to think about Mr. Torley at all, since that was what had gotten him in trouble in the first place. Distantly, he wonders how long the influence of his first Keeper will continue to stain Jaime’s existence beyond the termination of their six-month contract.
Dr. Tate, who has been buried in the cabinets above the sink for several minutes, turns back to him sporting bright-blue gloves that adhere tightly around his slender hands. He meets Jaime’s eyes for half a second before his gaze darts somewhere just to the left of his shoulder.
“We need to run a couple of tests,” he says in a detached, clinical voice, all notes of lightheartedness from earlier removed. “I’ll need to collect some samples from you.”
Jaime nods once in acknowledgement, squeezing his fingers tightly, unconsciously around the edge of the table. There’s an unnatural pause in his cadence, and Jaime when looks up, he watches a slight twitch of movement in the doctor’s jaw.
“Please remove your pants and underwear,” Dr. Tate says, his voice taking on a lower pitch. “You can leave them on up to your thighs, if you’d like.”
The slight shift in demeanor sets Jaime on edge, but he doesn’t hesitate at the command, even as a familiar panic claws at the inside of his throat. He drops forward from the table, his legs taking his weight. His thumbs hook the waistband of the thin, cotton pants he had been returned in, and he doesn’t allow himself a moment of hesitation before pushing them unceremoniously off his hips. He takes Dr. Tate up on his merciful offer to keep them partially on his body. The cold, sterile air inside the clinic is sharp against his exposed skin.
Jaime’s eyes find the ceiling as he prepares for the touch he knows is coming. He doesn’t look to see whatever tools and instruments Dr. Tate is laying out on the silver tray beside the exam table. He doesn’t have to. “We need to run a couple of tests.”  Whatever foolish hypotheticals Jaime once held in regards to WRU — what they did and didn’t know about the treatment of their wards — had long been shattered.
Of course they needed to test him for sexually transmitted diseases. They can’t have a Domestic Companion spreading something to the next paying customer that buys their time and exposing their innocent charade.
There’s a pause in Dr. Tate’s movement, but Jaime doesn’t look away from his spot on the ceiling tile.
“I’m going to touch you, now.” Dr. Tate’s voice is low and measured. “I need to examine you for bumps or sores, any abnormalities.” He clears his throat. “And I’ll take a swab from your urethra. It might be uncomfortable, but it shouldn’t hurt you.” Another pause. “Please, tell me if it does.”
Jaime’s grip on the table tightens, but he otherwise doesn’t react. Distantly, he is grateful for the warning, the bare explanation, mortifying as it is. He knows that the doctors here are not obligated to explain anything to the Companion patients, to seek consent in any form. Their consent was implicitly given in the contracts they signed at intake. He just as easily could have left Jaime gagged and bound to the table and gone about the procedure without so much as a word to him. Jaime is glad he hadn’t.
Instead, Dr. Tate’s touch is light and professional. His gloved hands don’t linger, they don’t poke and prod to get a reaction from him. It seems, even, that he touches him as little as possible. Almost as if he is as eager to get this over with as Jaime is, which doesn’t feel quite possible.
The fluorescent strip of light next to his focal point on the ceiling burns at the edge of his vision, but he doesn’t look away, using the mild discomfort as an anchor to hold himself steady. He concentrates on that instead of the gentle touches, gritting his teeth against any traitorous urges his body might provoke. Mr. Torley had loved that about Jaime — his responsiveness to touch — but not as much as he loved using it against him.
His stomach sours at the memory, fresh humiliation creeping into his cheeks at the idea of something similar happening now. He doesn’t think Dr. Tate would tease him the way his Keeper had, but he still doesn’t relish the idea of becoming physically aroused in front of this young doctor, who couldn’t have been more than a few years older than him and, in another life, Jaime might have found pretty.
The thought is gone almost as soon as it comes, too painful to linger on. The idea of another life. A normal life. A life at all. These are thoughts Jaime is forbidden to have. The phantom sting of an electric shock lights up the column of his throat and Jaime winces.
“Sorry,” Dr. Tate said quickly, misunderstanding the movement and withdrawing his hand. Jaime’s eyes finally fall to his as the doctor takes a step back, inserting the long swab into a glass tube and sealing it with a cap. “The worst part is over.”
Jaime is numb all over, but he nearly laughs. He knows that having stepped foot in this facility again, the “worst part” has not even begun.
“I’ll need to collect another sample from your mouth,” Dr. Tate continues, pulling on a fresh pair of gloves, and Jaime absently wonders why they even bother wasting extra product on the patients here. “And we’ll draw some blood—”
Something catches his voice mid-sentence and Jaime’s eyes flick up to his again. Dr. Tate looks at him, and then pointedly, hurriedly away. Jaime swears he can see his pale cheeks reddening.
“You can— We’re finished with that part.” He stumbles out. “Feel free to cover yourself up.”
Jaime does as he’s told, finding it somewhere within himself to be grateful that the doctor had kept the procedure professional. He couldn’t say the same thing for every encounter he’d had in the facility clinic before.
********
Sebastian knows what happens next, and that’s why he finds himself taking his time with the rest of the visit. As soon as he’s completed the mandated intake exam, he is supposed to mark the patient as cleared in his chart and alert the handlers to come collect him. To take him back into the part of the facility where Sebastian has never set foot; the “residential” wing where the unclaimed Companions are housed between contracts. On all the promotional advertisements, it’s depicted as a dormitory-like accommodation. Now that Sebastian knows just how little truth exists behind their lies, he can only imagine it’s nothing of the sort.
His mind conjures images of iron-barred cells and concrete rooms, of medieval dungeons with chains and darkness and filth. It’s a sensationalized version of what he assumes is probably the truth, but that doesn’t mean the reality is any less horrible. After what he’s seen in his time here and everything he’s heard, he has no doubt that the people who are forced to reside here between Keepers are subject to the company’s own brand of horror. Frankly, he’s in no hurry to turn his patient back over to their hands a moment sooner than he has to.
The boy is silent and entirely pliable throughout the whole exam, allowing himself to be moved when necessary and not so much as flinching when the needles for the blood draw break his skin. Sebastian is glad when the more… invasive parts of the exam are over. The boy had been no less compliant during them, maybe even the opposite, but Sebastian hadn’t missed the subtle changes in his posture, the way the muscles in his hands clenched and released around the edge of the table as he touched him as little as possible.
He had looked up at the ceiling instead of at the wall behind Sebastian, as he had done previously, and Sebastian had silently prayed that the position wasn’t intended as a way to hold back tears. He doesn’t know how he could live with himself if he made this kid cry.
When the blood has been drawn, the test samples submitted for lab processing, and a full physical performed, Sebastian has run out of ways to delay the inevitable. He closes out of the boy’s patient profile on his screen and turns to him, hands folded professionally in front.
“I’ll need to alert the handlers that your intake exam is complete,” he told him, probably unnecessarily. He hadn’t looked to see how long he had been in the system, but from his behavior, he assumes it’s been long enough to break his spirit. He probably knows these protocols better than Sebastian ever wants to. “They’ll come and escort you back to the residential quarters.”
110750 nods once without looking at him. “Thank you,” he says flatly. Then, there is a moment of pause before he lifts his eyes and seems to level Sebastian with something more sincere. “Thank you for… for letting me get cleaned up.”
Sebastian feels like shattering into pieces all over the cold linoleum. Instead, he tries for a smile and lands somewhere in the realm of a tight, thin line at his lips. “Sure,” he says, a bit mortified to hear the crack in his voice.
He watches 110750 take slow, measured breaths as Sebastian makes the call he desperately wishes he didn’t have to make. He tries not to stare as they wait in tense silence for the handlers to arrive. Of course, Sebastian could leave the room if he wants. The intake procedure is done, and so is his minimal obligation to patient care. But something feels wrong about leaving him. More than that, something feels utterly wrong about this boy being taken out of the clinic, away from his line of sight, where he can’t see what will happen next. He only knows it won’t be good.
A split second before he hears the clinic doors whoosh open, Sebastian steps closer to his patient, lowering his voice to a quick, urgent whisper. “Keep an eye on that broken nose,” he advises. “If you have any trouble breathing as it heals, please don’t hesitate to let your assigned handler know that you need medical attention, okay?”
The boy hitches in a breath but doesn’t respond. Sebastian takes half a step closer.
“Look, you have a right to medical assistance,” he says, the words feeling like treason on his tongue despite knowing their written truth. “Even here. Even now. You can always come see me here if you need to. They can’t legally prevent you from requesting care. Do you understand?”
Unexpectedly, something dark flashes in the boy’s eyes. Something less like the fear and dread he had witnessed earlier, and something much more akin to anger. Anger at Sebastian?
Before the interaction can go any further, they are interrupted by the unceremonious swing of the exam room door. The same two men who had brought him in - one with a fresh bandage on his face - push their way in, stepping between Sebastian and his patient.
“Up you go, 7-5-0,” Handler Hernandez barks, and the boy is on his feet before he can finish the command, his hands behind his back, head bowed.
“Oh, look who finally decided to behave,” the other one - Smith, maybe? - taunts as he sizes him up in a way that makes even Sebastian’s skin crawl. Just as he had prior to the visit, the man shifts his gaze to him, a sneer permanently embedded into his expression. “Does he get a lollipop for good behavior? Maybe a sticker?”
The boy doesn’t look up at him, but Sebastian thinks he sees his throat move. He feels a swell of rage rise into his throat, coming to a boiling point for the second time since he entered the room with this boy, but he swallows it back, keeping as level an expression as he can manage.
“He was perfectly agreeable,” he responds tightly, refusing to play into whatever mockery he’s initiating.
Smith answers him with a dismissive snort, turning his attention back to the boy like a predator who just found fresh meat. “What do you say, sweetheart?” He asks, the thick rubber of his boots squeaking against the tile as he takes a step too far into the boy’s personal space. “Think we can go the easy way back, or would you prefer to do things the hard way again?”
The beat of silence in the room is painful as they await his response, which comes eventually in a subdued voice, through slightly gritted teeth and with his eyes on the floor. “The easy way. Sir.”
A snort from Hernandez breaks the tension. “Yeah,” he says. “We’ll see about that.”
With that, he is escorted from the room and seems to take with him all the air in Sebastian's lungs. Naively, desperately, he hopes for the briefest moment of eye contact before he’s taken away from him. But his eyes stay downward, even as a large hand curls around his bicep and makes him stumble in his gait as he’s yanked forward. Sebastian watches helplessly as he disappears from sight, one singular thought slicing through his mind on a loop:
Who did this to you?

Words: 14k
Chapter 1 - Chapter 2 - Chapter 3 - Chapter 4 - Finale
——————————————————————————
The repetitive high pitched beeping drew you out of your heavy sleep. You winced as the ceiling light switched on automatically, the brightness glaring down at you. You heard a groan from your roommate, signalling that he was also awake. You lay there for a second, your eyes trying to adjust, before pulling yourself up into a sitting position.
You turned your head towards the boy on your left, wincing once again as your neck cracked loudly. His eyes moved towards you, one eyebrow raised questioningly.
‘Lab last night?’ He asked, the three words asking the question that all of you dreaded.
Did they take you into the lab last night? Did they experiment on you? What did they do to you? What do you remember? Do you remember anything?
‘Yep.’ You muttered. ‘Routine 2b.’
It was Jeno’s turn to wince at your revelation. He knew that 2b was a painful routine that they could put you through, involving a lot of needles and a heavy focus on your neck.
You simply let out a dry chuckle and shrugged, a short yet sharp pain shooting through your neck and upper back as you did so.
‘Still feeling it?’ He asked again, clearly noticing your obvious discomfort.
‘How could you tell?’ You gave him a small smile, a sad but familiar one that was always exchanged between the two of you the morning after a visit to the lab.
The door of your cell buzzed, signalling that it was open, and in walked a single guard. He was wearing protective gear from head to toe, from thick boots, to a bullet proof vest, to his gloves, all the way to the helmet covering his face. You never knew who was behind all the gear, having never seen the face of a single guard in this facility for as long as you’d been here. The pistol strapped to his boot, or the knife at his side, or even the machine gun across his back probably should have scared you, but when that’s all you’ve known, you don’t see anything wrong with it.
Besides, you’re only in this facility to protect the outside world from dangers like you. The facility you’re in holds some of the most dangerous people in the world. The upper levels of the facility held criminals, each getting more threatening as you ventured down through the floors of the building. Those arrested for petty theft or vandalism were kept at the top, then the serial killers and mass murders were contained one floor above the bottom. You were kept in the most secured sub basement section of the facility. The lowest possible layer. You were watched at all time by guards and cameras, taken into labs for tests and experiments. Doctors would perform these on you, taking samples and notes, figuring out how to help you control yourselves.
The sub section you were kept in held around 150 people, most of them teenagers and young adults like you. You were different, called mutants of some kind. That was the closest you had ever come to an actual answer about what you were. What you did know was that you had abilities, something that the average human didn’t have, and that was what made you dangerous. Out of all the years you had been here, you had only managed to figure out a few other subject’s abilities. The seven other boys you shared your area with, to be exact.
You first found out about your roommate, Lee Jeno, subject A7, weather manipulation. He could create a storm by narrowing his eyes or make the sun shine brighter by simply smiling. His abilities were often affected by his emotions. The happier he was, the easier it was to create a sunny environment, but when he was angry or frustrated, he often found it difficult to control the storm that started brewing. There was something oddly poetic about his abilities though. This thought occurred to you the one and only time you saw him cry. To this day, you still have no idea what happened to break his heart like that, but, you watched one day as the guard pulled him aside and delivered some news. The next thing you knew, Jeno had collapsed to the ground, sobs tearing from his chest. Even though you were inside, rain droplets started to fall on your head. It was as if the sky had decided to cry with him.
There was Mark Lee, subject A3, healing and super speed. Apparently it’s incredibly rare to have more than one ability. That’s why they call Mark Lee the ‘Golden Boy’. He often finds the world running at a pace that was too slow for him, his naturally faster system getting bored easily. He would spend some time running laps around the training room faster than you could blink. His healing skill is the one he has most trouble with. It doesn’t come as easily to him as his speed does. Instead, he has to learn it. Without thinking much, he can mend cuts and fade bruises, and, when he really focuses, he finds a way to stop serious pain or bleeding, and often pulls the body back together slightly.
Next, Huang Renjun, subject D9, image manipulation. He is the hardest to get a read on. You often can’t tell if he’s really in front of you, or if it’s simply just an image of him. He can make you see anything he wants you to see. Whether that is an empty training room when there’s actually ten people in there, or if it’s suddenly transporting you to a beach in the Caribbean. He seems to have the most control over his abilities out of all of you. Focusing now on making multiple people see what he wants them to, rather than just an individual.
After him, Lee Donghyuck, subject B5, he sees the future. No one knows how much he can see or how accurate it is, but he always know more than you do. You often think that he knows a lot more than he’s letting on. He likes to use his ability for trivial things, like telling people what’s for lunch or what to expect in training today. He has a much more serious and caring side to him though. You suspect that he uses his ability to keep an eye on your emotions as somehow, he always seems to know when you’re having a bad day.
Also, Na Jaemin, subject D2, mind control. Sweet as sugar but just as artificial, he could send you the deadliest smile, all while secretly enticing you into doing something for him. Normally it’s nothing drastic, fetching his lunch for him or asking a guard the question he doesn’t want to. But you never know when he’ll get bored of that and make you do something you really don’t want to. You always make sure to keep him on your good side. Similar to Donghyuck, no one really knows the true extent of his powers, making him even more mysterious. Even the guards seem nervous of him because you can never quite tell when he’s enchanting you, not until it’s too late.
Then comes Zhong Chenle, subject C6, a shapeshifter. Can transform easily if he’s looking at the animal, harder if he has to remember it and really has to focus if he wants to take on the form of another human. He always seems to be in a good mood. How he manages that you have no idea, but you’re always thankful. He takes the whole situation less seriously than the others. Choosing to randomly turn into birds and fly into the guards helmets or run up their legs as a mouse. No matter what, he always manages to make you laugh.
And finally, Park Jisung, subject D4, super strength. Not exactly what you would expect the boy to have, considering his personality. He seems too sweet for this reality. He always wants the best for people and sees the good in everyone. Sometimes, you wish that you could have that mindset. He’s such a pure soul that you often forget he could squish you in between his fingers like a fly if you weren’t careful. He constantly seemed to forget that he was incredibly strong, often banging the table when laughing and knocking off a leg, or clapping Hyuck on the back and sending him sprawling to the floor. He was a bit clumsy but had a heart of gold.
Rounding out the floor, there was you, subject A1, telekinesis. You could move a glass simply by looking at it, pick something up by blinking or shake your head and watch the overhead lights swing. If you focused hard you could lift or move heavier things, but moving people took almost all of your energy. Like Jeno, your emotions affect how powerful you were. Unlike with Renjun and Chenle who seem to lose control the angrier or more emotional or worked up they get, with Renjun’s images flickering and Chenle shifting uncontrollably from animal to animal, you and Jeno seem to be able to do more. Jeno could make a thunder storm powerful enough to blow the windows out by clenching his jaw and you could lift impossibly heavy objects and even throw them. Pushing people to the side also only took a slight flick of your hand. Sometimes your powers scared yourself. What would you do if one day you lost control and hurt someone you loved? If you were already dangerous enough to be locked in a facility like this, what would that make you? You would be worse than a monster.
As well as sharing the same floor with you, you also shared the same training room and dining hall. You even shared the same lab. It terrified you every time you walked into or past it and got a glimpse of the blood coating the doctor’s hands from their previous procedures.
The guard back out of your doorway, keeping an eye on the two of you at all times. You tilted your head to the left slightly, narrowing your eyes at him, watching as the guard’s moves sped up. He tripped over his own feet slightly in a bid to leave the room as fast as possible, causing both you and Jeno to burst out laughing when the door was shut.
‘You really have to stop doing that. It’s mean.’ Jeno lightly scolded you, the smile still present on his face.
‘Oh please, I am nowhere near as bad as Chenle. You know, Jisung told me that the last time the guard went into their room, Chenle had hidden himself as a moth under the bed, and then dropped in front of the poor guard and turned himself into a bear.’ You recited the story of yesterday morning to Jeno’s disbelieving face. ‘It’s true! Besides, at least we get to wake up to a smile on our faces.’
‘Yeah, you have a point.’ He paused for a second before giggling again. ‘Chenle is ruthless.’
You couldn’t help but laugh as well, treasuring the rare moments like this. Moments where everything seemed ok, seemed normal, and you could enjoy life and laugh with friends as if nothing else was wrong. However, those moments only ever last a few seconds.
The speakers in your room buzzed to life as a voice cracked through them.
‘All subjects to the rose room in five minutes. All subjects to the rose room in five minutes.’
You both looked at each other and sighed, before climbing out of your beds and grabbing the clothes provided. The guards come in every morning to drop them off. A simple grey jumpsuit, that was all you wore, everyday. You grabbed yours and headed into the bathroom to change. You pulled it on and spared yourself a short look in the mirror. The dark bags around your eyes were prominent, as were the small red dots on your neck. The only traces of what you went through the previous night. You rubbed them, trying to soften the aching before turning to leave the bathroom.
You knocked on the door, waiting for a shout from Jeno to say that it was okay for you to come out, before exiting. Together you waited for the trademark low pitched buzz that signalled your cell door being unlocked, and headed out into the hallway.
As you left you spotted the doctor waiting by your door. The other cells on your floor made the same low pitched buzz, and, gradually, out walked the other six boys. There were doctors positioned by each door, prepared with an injection. You received it every day, a numbing agent, that dulled your abilities for a period of time. It was given to you in the morning, allowing you to do your work and have lunch before it wore off and you went to your training sessions.
The doctor extended a gloved hand to you, silently asking for your arm. You handed it to her and she rolled up your sleeve. She turned over your wrist and held you by the elbow as she positioned the syringe just below the joint.
The syringe wasn’t the kind they used in the labs. It wasn’t glass with a long metal needle on one end, it was thicker, something that had to be properly gripped with a button on the top to administer whatever was inside.
The doctor gave you no warning before she pushed the button and you winced as the machine let out a hiss, injecting the blue serum into you. You watched as she held out a hand to Jeno and repeated the same procedure. You blinked slowly a few times, the effects of the drug already taking hold.
‘Make your way to the rose room. Now.’ A guard to your left barked.
You turned robotically, your mind fuzzy and clouded. You began the journey to the rose room, your entire being occupied with the simple task of getting there. You had no thought process, no questions running around your mind, you weren’t thinking of anything. You just did what you were told.
You walked down with Jeno by your side, the white walls and floors passing you by with every step you took. You vaguely registered Jaemin joining you in your peripheral vision, but you didn’t turn to look at him. You kept your head straight, your face emotionless and your mouth shut. None of you looked at each other, none of you looked anywhere but straight ahead, and none of you uttered a word. None of you gave an inclination that you were more that walking robots, fully compliant and prepared to carry out any instruction given.
Because, in reality, under this drug, that was all that you were reduced to. You just didn’t realise the danger of that yet.
---
The door to the rose room was already open when you arrived, a guard standing there holding it for you. You didn’t spare a look towards him, your dull eyes kept focus on what was in front of you. You trudged towards your position, finding the spot labelled with your subject number and began your work.
The rose room was a large greenhouse. Inside it was a maze of rose bushes, sporting roses of all kinds and colours. If you were more awake then maybe you would appreciate the reds, blue, yellows and purples a lot more, but in your zombified state, you only knew work. In the middle of the room, however, was a large conveyer belt.
Your job was to extract certain things from these roses, place them on the conveyer belt, and move onto the next thing. You did this for three hours in the morning everyday.
It was only in the rose room that you saw more of the subjects that were kept in the facility. You were just conscious enough to be aware of the girl and boy on either side of you, and of the fact that you didn’t recognise them.
However, you were blissfully unaware of the guards stalking through the rows of you. They stopped by the boy on your left and grabbed him by the shoulders. You didn’t register the guards movements. You didn’t register the boy being violently yanked out of his position. You didn’t register him being dragged down the halls. You didn’t register his screams.
You did your work.
---
Due to the numbing agent of the serum, time didn’t seem to exist during your work and lunch, so, before you knew it, it was time to train.
The training room was a very large open space, with an area of it dedicated to a certain activity. Your training works in a circuit. Each of you has an individual routine, specific activities and exercises to work on each day that are tailored towards your abilities. As well as the ability training, you all have fitness training and agility and other physical exercises to complete as well. You weren’t sure what you were training for, but you had been doing it all your life.
Yesterday you had been working on distance training. This was one exercise that was centred around your ability and focused on you trying to move the same object from a further distance each time. It was repetitive and mentally draining, but always gave you good results. Since that was yesterday, it meant that today you were working on your physical agility and assisting it with your abilities. It involved things such as jumping from narrow beams and using your telekinesis to help and support your movements.
You always began without using abilities, trying it by yourself so that you knew where you needed to direct your energy. You started on two long beams that were only around two feet off the floor, and you simply jumped between them, trying to keep your balance. You had to make your way down them while jumping from one to the other, speeding up each time you completed it.
Then, once the instructor watching you was satisfied, you were told to use your abilities. You now used telekinesis to manipulate the air around you to help you jump. It made you jump further and faster, also with safer landings. You continued with this for a short while before the instructor stopped you.
‘Right, now let’s actually put it to the test.’ They said, turning away from you.
You watched them, confused, bending over slightly with you hands on your knees as you tried to catch your breath. You had been hoping for a break so that you could rest briefly but you had no such luck. Your instructor turned around and pointed above them.
‘Up you go’ They said nonchalantly. You followed to where they were pointing and you let out a breath of disbelief. Above you, hanging from the ceiling, were thin beams that were swaying the the minute breeze cause by the movement.
‘You’ve gotta be kidding me.’ You thought. But you instructor simply looked at you expectantly and you knew that you weren’t getting out of this. All the other boys were drawing to a close with their exercises, which didn’t go unnoticed by your instructor, so they decided to make a small change to their plan.
‘You get through this once, and then we’re done for the day. Okay?’ They said, nodding with a smile that was anything but friendly.
You took a deep breath and climbed the stairs to the side of the room. On the way up you looked down and watched as Jisung finished his final exercise, meaning that all the boys were officially done. You reached the top and looked out in front of you.
The beams were much thinner than those you had been working on below, and, not to mention, the ropes holding them up looked suspiciously frail. They creaked as they moved and the wooden beams swayed gently in front of you. You knew that you weren’t getting out of here without completing this task, so you jumped.
The first jump was easy. It wasn’t even half a meter long and your telekineses helped you to keep the beam steady. You took careful steps, wincing every time the beam creaked underneath your weight. The ropes groaned as you moved but you kept going, knowing that slowing down would be more dangerous.
You cleared the second jump again, with a little more effort required, but you couldn’t quite figure out why it was more difficult. You made you way across this one swiftly, keeping you steps as light as possible due to the trembling ropes. The last thing you wanted was to fall now. It wasn’t until you reached the third jump that you realised why it was getting harder.
The jumps were getting bigger.
You swallowed, risking a look down and seeing the seven boys watching you carefully. You took a shaky breath, keeping your eyes on them as you saw Jeno give you a nod of encouragement. You nodded back and lifted your head, determined to finish this. You focused your mind on using the air around you and pictured pushing the particles together to form a barrier. You jumped forward and used that barrier to lift you slightly higher. You let out a sigh of relief when you cleared the distance, but you relaxed too early as you hadn’t taken into account the weight of you landing.
The ropes creaked dangerously loudly and you watched in fear as they began to fray. You knew you had to finish this quickly, or else you would be taking the quick way down. You took step after step, walking as fast as you possibly could to reach the second to last jump. You lifted off again, this time with less preparation due to you worry of the beam snapping, and you almost didn’t make it. You landed, roughly on the edge of the beam, holding onto it desperately in an attempt to pull yourself up.
You could hear the worried intakes of breath from the boys below you, but they didn’t say a thing. They weren’t allowed to. Interfering with another subject’s training had painful repercussions.
‘Come on y/n.’ You heard Jaemin’s voice echo through your head. You spared a look down to find him looking at you intently. You realised that he must be using his abilities to speak with you telepathically. You didn’t know he could do that. ‘Pull yourself up. You can do this.’
You forced yourself to focus, using your ability to help your legs up and you got onto the beam. You had just straightened up when it started to shake, the ropes of the verge of breaking.
‘Run!’ Jaemin’s voice shattered your dazed mind and you took off. One foot in front of the other, just trying to reach the end. You only had two jumps left to make, one to the final beam and one to the solid platform at the end with the stairs to take you back down to the safety of the ground.
You launched off the beam and onto the final one, the impact of your landing causing the ropes to tremble. You began to run and they properly gave out. You felt the beam beneath you begin to give way and you placed a final foot as close to the edge as you could, and leaped.
You used your ability the best you could, but you could tell that you weren’t going to make it. Then you felt a sudden gust of air push you up slightly, allowing you to just clear the distance and land in a heap, safely on the other side.
You lay there on the ground for a second, catching your breath. The instructor’s voice echoed around the training room.
‘Head back to your cells! We’re done for the day!’
---
You and Jeno were making your way back to your cell after dinner. The events of the training room hadn’t left your mind. That final gust of air had saved you. And you knew that it had to have come from Jeno. No one else could do that.
‘Hey Jeno?’ You asked, keeping your eyes on the floor as you walked.
He hummed in response.
‘Thank you for earlier. I don’t know what I would have done without you.’ You said honestly.
He stopped you walking, forcing you to look at him.
‘You don’t ever need to thank me. I’ve got your back and you’ve got mine. No matter what, we’re always gonna protect each other yeah?’
You nodded, a smile etching its way onto your face.
‘Yeah.’
You kept walking, turning the corner into your corridor that your cell was near the other end of. On the way to your cell, you passed the lab with its door open. You looked into it as you passed and stopped in your tracks. Donghyuck was on the operating table they had in the middle of the room, being restrained by two guards as he whimpered and resisted. You watched as they clamped metal restraints over his wrists and ankles, keeping him in place. A doctor began to approach him with a scalpel in his hand when the two of you were noticed. The doctor gestured towards the guard who reach forward and slammed the door shut, the lock clicking afterwards.
You and Jeno shared a sad look. The familiar whirring noise of the doctor’s instruments radiated through the door and you winced. You both recognised that sound and knew what Donghyuck was about to be put though. Jeno’s arm came up to your back to begin to guide you back to your shared cell. You accepted and walked with him. You knew that there was nothing you could do.
You hadn’t even got halfway down the corridor before Donghyuck began to scream.
---
9 days had passed since your last lab visit, meaning that you would be back in there tonight. And you were. You hadn’t even finished eating when the guards came to collect you. The other boys watched you sadly as you were escorted away.
You lay down on the operating table waiting for them to proceed. You felt the two guards approach you and you instinctively began to draw yourself away.
‘Strap her down. We don’t have time for this.’ The doctor instructed, frustration already present in his tone.
The guard stepped towards you again, grabbing your hands and pushed them down onto the table you were lying at. He ignored your begs and pleads to let you go and, instead, clamped the metal restraints down over your wrists. He repeated this process with your feet, effectively locking you in place.
You struggled against the cuffs with all you might but couldn’t budge one bit. You were used to being cuffed at your wrists and ankles, but it was when the guard approached you with a large belt, strapping your stomach to the table, that you really began to freak out. Your whole body thrashed from side to side as you tried to break free, but eventually, you found yourself unable to move.
The doctor leaned forward and pushed the guard out of the way. You noticed that, for the first time, there were three doctors preparing to work on you, rather than the normal one. This, and the intense measures that they went to to ensure that you couldn’t move, caused your fear to shoot through the roof.
‘The new procedure today Doc?’ One of the younger doctors asked.
‘Yes. We should be able to get some good data.’ The doctor leaning over you answered.
You whimpered slightly, terrified of what was about to happen. The doctor leaned further over you, adjusting the scalpel in his hand. You tried to move away from it, but you had no power. The other two doctors held you head and chest, exposing you neck.
You felt the small knife make a long incision on the back of your neck and you couldn’t stop the scream that ripped from your throat. Something was on this knife that was making it unbelievably painful.
‘Don’t panic, she’s just reacting to the acid that’s on the tools.’ The first doctor’s voice cut through.
Acid.
Whatever was happening to you, it was going to be the most painful experience of your life.
And it was.
You screamed and thrashed and sobbed, trying everything you could to escape the merciless torture that was being inflicted upon you. You were cut in areas, injected, and hit with other objects. The doctors measured you reactions to each of these and took notes on how your body reacted.
You eventually transcended the level of pain, you body and mind too broken for you to register the full extent of what you were going through. You couldn’t even scream anymore, your lungs and vocal cords exhausted from the amount you’d used them in the previous hours.
‘Ok that’s enough.’ You heard a voice say. You tried to pry your eyes open to see who was speaking, but you couldn’t move. You could barely even focus on the words that were being said.
‘It’s not your job to tell us what to do.’ You recognised the main doctor’s voice.
The previous voice replied again. ‘It’s my job to keep them alive. Now stop.’
You managed to pry open your eyes and noticed a guard standing in front of the doctor, staring him down. You could’t process what was going on. The guards never stood up for you.
However, something in the guard’s words made the doctor turn back towards you, and when he saw the state that you were in, he swore.
‘Fuck.’ The words left his mouth softly and he suddenly began to rummage through the drawers. ‘Save the data, we need to eradicate this experience. She couldn’t take as much as we thought she could.’
The younger doctor’s voice piped up, a sentence that sent a chill down your spine. ‘We could try it on subject A3. The higher levels of speed mean that he heals faster, we would probably get further on him.’
‘Good idea.’ The first doctor replied.
Subject A3... Mark.
‘Now this is going to wake her up for about thirty seconds before knocking her out again. But she still isn’t going to have control over her limbs so you need to get her back to her cell, understand?’
You assumed the doctor was talking to the guard, but your eyes had closed again. The weight of your eyelids being too much to hold open in your current state. You tried to protest as the doctor tiled your head to the side, but all that came out was a choked whine. You hissed as the needle pierced your skin and something was injected into you.
You head spun violently as your body registered the new drug and you felt as though you were going to throw up. Your eye shot open as you gulped for air, your newly freed arms coming up to scratch at you throat.
Not even two seconds later, your entire body was numb. You couldn’t move, stand or pick yourself up even if you wanted to. The guard approached you, holding one of your arms over his shoulder and supporting your waist with the other. He lifted you up and walked you out of the door. Until the doctor’s voice caused a sudden stop to his movements
‘Ten? Not a word of this to anyone.’
The guard, Ten, didn’t move, didn’t even turn back to look at the doctor, but he didn’t need to in order to understand the threat. He made his way down the corridor, swearing as you slipped slightly from his grip. You watched the floor begin to spin under you feet as you were carried back to your cell. He finally reached the door, swiping his key card in the lock and kicking it open before throwing you back inside.
Your limp body hit the floor with a hard thud and the door closed behind the guard as he exited, locking with a click and a buzz. The ceiling spun above you and you couldn’t move to pull yourself up from the floor to get to your bed. You just registered Jeno’s worried face coming into your vision when it all went black.
---
You woke to the same high pitched beeping you did every morning. This time, however, to the view of Jeno’s head on your bed too. He had fallen asleep on the floor, watching over you throughout the night.
He stirred slightly, groaning as the beeping woke him from his slumber. He lifted his head, turning suddenly to look at you, his eyes widening when he saw that you were awake.
‘Y/n? Are you okay?’ He asked, concern etched on his features.
You opened your mouth to speak, but all that came out was a hoarse croak. You throat burned from the previous night and you winced at the pain. Jeno stood quickly, running into the bathroom to get you a glass of water. He came back and handed it you, watching as you gulped it down.
‘What did they do to you?’ He whispered, watching you form sadly.
‘I don’t know.’ You whispered back, unable to speak any louder.
The door buzzed open and a guard walked in, the number 10 easily visible on the strap on his upper right arm. He placed the new grey jumpsuits on the end of your bed began to walk away again. The guard stopped in the doorway and turned back.
‘The rose room has been cancelled.’ He informed the two of you. ‘Instead, you train in the morning, then go for lunch and have a free afternoon. Get out of bed y/n.’
Both yours and Jeno’s heads shot towards the guard as he left, the two of you frozen in shock as the door locked shut.
‘Tell me you heard that too.’ Jeno breathed.
‘Yep.’ You confirmed, your brain running at a mile a minute.
‘They never address us by our names.’ He stated, and he was right. You were always addressed by subject number, nothing else.
‘Yep.’ You repeated.
‘Only by subject number.’
‘Yep.’
‘What do you think it means?’ He asked, turning away from the shut door to look at you.
‘I don’t know.’ You shook your head, your eyes still locked on the cell door that was staring back at you.
‘Why was it only you?’ Jeno wondered aloud.
‘I don’t know.’ You knew about as much as Jeno did so you honestly had no idea why he was asking you all these questions.
‘How do you feel about it?’
You paused, not knowing how to answer the final question that, for some reason, made your blood run cold. You turned to look at him.
‘... I don’t know.’
---
You and Jeno were the last to enter the training room. You both scanned the guards surrounding you all, but when none of them had the number 10 on their armour, you shared a disappointed look. Before arriving, you had decided to keep a look out for that guard, to see if there was something that separated him from the others. Something you could notice that would give you a reason as to why he used your name rather than your number. Once the eight of you were in the room, the guards turned and left, shutting the door behind them. You all stared at the shut door, then at each other. You had never been left alone in the training room before. Never.
What was wrong with this day?
You walked towards the physical agility station, confused when you saw Chenle standing there, preparing for his training. You weren’t sure why he was there when it was your turn for that station. He turned around when you approached him, his confused features mirroring your own.
‘Umm I’m meant to be on this station today.’ You informed him, not quite understanding why he didn’t already know that. You had all been on this training timetable for as long as you could remember.
‘No you’re not.’ Chenle replied bluntly, staring at you as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
‘Yeah, I am.’ Chenle shook his head at you but you persisted. ‘Yes, I am! I was on distance training yesterday so now I’m on this. Aren’t you on strength and conditioning?’ You stared at him expectantly but instead watched as worry spread across his face.
‘Y/n...’ His voice was low, quite as if he wasn’t sure how to tell you this. ‘You did physical agility three days ago.’
‘What do you mean?’ You asked, unable to quite wrap your mind around this new piece of information.
‘I mean you did this activity three days ago.’ He repeated, his eyes widening with worry. ‘Don’t you remember?’
You shook your head and took a shaky step back. By this point the other boys had begun to notice the conversation between the two of you, prompting them to come over and see what was wrong. Jeno placed a hand on your should, having just overheard the last two sentences.
‘Y/n, what do you remember?’ He looked you straight in the eyes.
‘I don’t know.’ You repeated the words you had already said multiple times today, fear and frustration growing.
‘What did they do to you in that lab?’ He questioned, desperate for an answer.
‘I don’t know.’ You could hear the emotion creeping out in your voice.
‘Think!’ Jeno said, shaking you by the shoulders gently.
‘I don’t know! I don’t remember!’ You raised your voice, your body beginning to shake. All of the other boys stared at you in horror and you fell into Jeno’s hug whispering a scared. ‘Why don’t I remember?’
It was Jaemin’s voice that spoke the words you were all thinking but too afraid to say, scared of what it would mean for you all.
‘They wiped her memory.’
---
You eyes opened to the harsh light above you as the same rhythmic beeping woke you up. Even though you have woke up to the same noise for as long as you can remember, it still drives you insane to listen to it.
You rolled over, pulling your pillow over your head as you waited for it to stop. You felt a weight on the side of your bed and hands gently pull the pillow off your face. You opened one eye to be greeted with Jeno’s smiling face. You couldn’t help but let out a smile at the little crescents his eyes made each time he smiled. It always managed to make you happy as well.
You rolled onto your back and shut your eyes again, pulling one arm over to help block out some of the light that was still making its way though. Jeno’s hand came up to rub your arm comfortingly.
‘How are you feeling today?’ He asked, his voice slightly raspy from just having woken up.
You groaned out as a response
‘I don’t know. Better, I guess. We talked about it a lot yesterday which helped. At least now we know how much I’m missing.’
You removed your arm from your eyes and looked at the boy above you who was nodding.
‘Three days, including an entire visit to the lab. We have to assume that something happened that they didn’t want you to remember.’ He mused, the logical and rational side of his brain showing.
‘But what?’ You wondered. It annoyed you so much that the only person who had these answers was you, and you couldn’t even remember them.
The cell door buzzed and a guard walked in. You lifted your head to get a look at his number. 23. No luck. He threw the jumpsuits onto the end of your bed and then proceeded to stare at the two of you.
‘Stay apart. No need to be that close.’ He ordered, but neither of you moved. ‘I said, keep distance between the two of you. Stay on your own bed!’
He took a step forward, as if he was preparing to pull the two of you away from each other, but you acted faster. You threw your hand out, making a pushing motion and watched as the guard flew out of the door, landing on his bum a few feet back.
He stumbled to his feet, attempting to stammer out an insult or some other kind of attempt to show off his power, but instead just settled on slamming the door shut.
The lock buzzed and Jeno turned to look at you, shock and amazement clear on his face.
‘How did you manage that? That took almost no effort.’
You sighed.
‘I’m tired.’
Jeno’s brows furrowed at your reply.
‘But you’re like me in that being tired means it takes more effort and focus to use your abilities.’
You nodded at him as you explained yourself.
‘Yep. But I’m not that kind of tired. I mean I am, but most of all, I’m tired of this. This life, whatever it is. I’m tired of being treated like I’m a monster, I’m tired of the experiments, I’m tired of the training, I’m fed up with being here.’ You turned your head to look at Jeno after your confession and watched as he nodded with a sad but understanding smile on his face.
‘Yeah... me too.’ He admitted, his voice soft.
‘I know.’ You whispered.
---
You exited your cell, ready for the day and saw guards lined up by your door. You and Jeno shared a confused look, wondering where the doctor’s were, when the guard next to Jisung began to speak.
‘From now on, we’ll be administering your serum.’ He then turned to the boy in front of him. ‘Arm out.’
The guard by your door did the same, grabbing your wrist and exposing your inner elbow. He placed the syringe just below the joint and pressed down. You winced at the feeling that you were unfortunately used to and stepped away so that Jeno could get his. You then waited for the usual symptoms to hit you, watching as your friends turned into the comatose shells of themselves that you were expecting.
But they never came.
Your mind remained as sharp and aware as ever, and you could feel every thought that ran through your mind. You turned back to look at Jeno and, one look at his eyes told you that he was feeling the exact same thing. Your eyes flickered towards the guard who administered your serum and you focused on the number on his arm.
10.
Jeno followed your gaze and looked back at you with wide eyes. The guard began to walk towards the two of you and, out of the corner of your eye, you could see the other guards doing the same so you didn’t think too much of it. Until he began to speak.
‘You’re heading to the rose room.’ He then made sure to look the both of you directly in the eyes. ‘And you’re under the usual effects of the serum.’
With that, he turned and walked away, leaving both you and Jeno alone. You decided to just do what he said and head to the rose room, but you made sure to act as though you were feeling the usual effects of the serum. You moved lethargically, dragging your feet and keeping your eyes ahead at all times. Jeno did the same, both of you faking it the entire way there, while wondering what the hell was going on.
---
You stood at your usual position in the rose room, gathering ingredients and putting them on the conveyer belt like you always did. When you entered the room it was hard not to react to anything. The range of brilliant colours blinded you as you entered and it took everything in you not to just stop and stare.
You noticed that, out of the all the subjects there, that you guessed would be around one hundred, it only looked like your group was under the serum. The rest of them seemed very much aware of their surroundings and what they were doing. When gathering the ingredients you took a quick look at what it was exactly that you were gathering. When you got a glimpse of the label, your heart stopped. These were the same bottles that were found in the lab. It wasn’t until you managed to look over every different object obtained from the genetically modified roses, that you realised you had spent your entire life gathering the solutions and serums that the doctors had used to perform experiments on you.
You had been assisting in your own torture.
You found yourself standing at your final station, a girl you didn’t recognise on your right and the space to your left was empty. The guards began to march between you all, weaving their way through the working subjects. They stopped next to you, so close that you could feel their breath on the back on your neck.
The hairs on your arm began to rise and goosebumps began to form at the close contact. You prayed that they couldn’t see your reaction, knowing that it would give away your state. But they weren’t there for you.
The guards grabbed the girl on your right by her shoulders and pulled her backwards. They held her underneath each arm and dragged her out of the rose room. Her screams, struggles and pleas for help went completely ignored as she was eventually pulled out of sight. No one took any notice, not single subject seemed to realise what had just happened. You could her your heart pounding louder than every before, the girl’s screams still echoing in your head, haunting your thoughts.
A sudden bell sounded through the rose room, one that you recognised as signalling the end of the session. You turned in your spot, waiting for your turn to leave as all the subjects filed out of the rose room in orderly fashion. The fact that the girl was taken at the end of the session made you nervous. Is that what the guards were doing when walking through you all? Looking for their next target? And how long it would be until it was one of you?
---
After the longest day yet, you and Jeno were back in your cell. The door locked behind you and you both turned and stared at each other in disbelief.
‘How much have we missed by being under the serum?’ You asked.
‘They must only put us under it so that they can get away with doing all those things, it’s not to protect us at all.’ Jeno stated and you nodded in agreement.
‘And did you see what we were gathering in the rose room?’ You brought up, watching as Jeno’s eyes widened in realisation.
‘The solutions they use in the lab! And what did they do to that poor girl?’ His voice softened as you both thought about the subject being dragged away from you all, begging for help.
‘I didn’t even know her name.’ You muttered.
‘Me neither.’ Jeno admitted. ‘But did you notice, I don’t think anyone other than our group was under the simulation.’
‘Yes!’ You agreed. ‘I saw that too. Everyone else seemed perfectly aware of what was going on.’
Jeno nodded and you sat down on your bed, your brain feeling as though it was about to explode.
‘Huh...’ You mumbled, a sudden thought crossing your mind.
Jeno turned his head towards you, his eyebrows furrowing at the confused look on your face.
‘What?’ He questioned.
‘It’s just... the other subjects were definitely awake. It was obvious that they hadn’t been given the serum that we normally are. So, why didn’t they react to that girl being taken by the guards.’ You pondered.
Jeno thought for a moment, sitting down on his own bed opposite you.
‘Maybe they’re used to it.’ He suggested. ‘We don’t know how often that happens, it could be considered normal.’
‘I guess.’ You conceded. ‘But they didn’t react at all... I mean, even if you’re used to it, she was screaming for her life and they didn’t even spare a glance. It’s strange not to take any notice of that. I mean, we only didn’t because we had to act as if we were still under the serum.’
Jeno didn’t reply for a second, his eyes fixated on his hands that fiddling were in his lap.
‘Why do you think we weren’t given the serum?’ He asked, looking up at you.
You opened your mouth to tell him that you had no idea, but the lock on your door buzzed, and it swung open. Four guards stalked in causing you and Jeno to both stand out of shock. You were never disturbed at this time unless it was to take you to the lab, and it was Renjun’s night tonight.
Two of the guards approached you, the other two heading towards Jeno.
‘What’s happening?’ Jeno asked, but he was ignored.
Not a words was uttered by the guards as they grabbed you by the arms and began to drag you out of your cell. You began to kick and scream, struggling with all your might to break free.
‘Jesus, why can’t she go quiet?’ One of the guards complained, earning a groan from his partner.
‘Just get her to the lab and stop complaining.’
The lab...
You began to throw yourself about, desperate to not go back there, whatever the cost. You had no idea what it was that was making you react this violently, but your instincts kicked it and told you to fight with all your might.
Upon seeing you reaction, Jeno tried to reach for you, but he was stopped by the other two guards who grabbed him by the shoulders and forced him back. They held onto him tight as he tried to break through them.
‘Y/n! Let go!’ He yelled out, trying to land a hit on one of the guards.
‘Jeno!’ You called back, kicking out with your feet in an attempt to throw the guards off balance.
‘Y/N!’ You could hear Jeno crying out for you as you were pulled out of the cell completely. You just managed to see the two guards holding Jeno throw him to the floor before they turned to leave. They locked the door, with you on the outside and Jeno on the inside.
You continued to be dragged away, crying out for dear life, begging someone to come and help you. But no one did. They all acted as if you didn’t exist. You couldn’t help but wonder if this was how that girl had felt earlier. Screaming and pleading for someone to save her, only to be treated like a ghost.
Jeno’s screams for you could still be heard halfway down the corridor, along with the heavy banging against the door from him throwing his body against it in an attempt to get out.
As you approached the lab door, every morsel of your being was telling you, screaming at you, not to go back in there. But you didn’t have a choice. The two guards threw you into the lab, one of them following you in, before the door was locked shut. You were stuck in the lab with one doctor and one guard, and you were terrified.
You banged on the door, trying desperately to get out. You were so frantic that you couldn’t hear the doctor trying to get your attention. It was only when you realised that they were making no effort to restrain or cuff you that you managed to calm yourself down slightly.
You turned away from the door, the tear tracks down your face prominent. You weren’t sure when you had started crying, the utter terror you had been feeling having taken over your entire body.
The doctor took one step towards you, holding up his hands as if in surrender, but also to show you that he wasn’t holding anything.
‘Well done y/n. Just try to keep yourself calm okay? Breathe... Can you do that for me?’
You didn’t reply to him, simply staring at the man that seemed to act as if he cared for you. These doctors didn’t care for you. Normally you would be handcuffed to the table, screaming in pain by now, but for some reason you were standing upright being told to breathe.
The guard to your left took off his helmet, causing you to take a breath of surprise. You had never seen a guard with his helmet off before, much less one this close. You gawked as the man smiled at you, a genuine, comforting smile that for some reason made you feel safe.
The doctor began to speak again.
‘Y/n, we’re not going to hurt you. In fact, we’re trying to help you. My name’s Doyoung and this is Ten.’
‘Uh huh...’ You stuttered, not really managing to get any real words out.
‘Ten administered your serum this morning, the serum I created for you. And you probably don’t need me to tell you that it was a fake.’
You nodded at the doctor’s words, still trying to calm your racing heart.
‘We did that because there’s a lot that you don’t know about this place that we think you should.’ The doctor, Doyoung, then turned to the guard. ‘Ten can you get her some water?’
The guard, who you assumed went by his uniform number 10, nodded before standing up.
‘Do you want to sit down?’ Doyoung asked, pulling up a chair for you.
You nodded, gladly taking the chair and very grateful that he didn’t ask you to sit on the table. Ten offered you a glass of water, which you took with a small smile as thanks. You took a sip, relishing in how the cool liquid managed to calm your mind.
‘Ok, keep going.’ You said and Doyoung’s eyebrows raised in surprise. ‘Why are you surprised? Like you said, after what I’ve seen today, I’m not so sure that this place is really meant to keep me safe.’
Doyoung sighed and looked down sadly.
‘It isn’t. This place isn’t designed to keep you safe, but rather to keep you in. It’s a prison. I know that to you it seems as though there are hundreds of people here, but there aren’t. Only the eight of you on your floor are being kept here.’
You let out a deep breath you didn’t even know you were holding.
‘A prison...’ You whispered. ‘Only for the eight of us?’
Doyoung nodded and Ten placed a comforting hand on your shoulder.
‘Why us?’ You asked.
Doyoung and Ten shared a look, making you dread what was coming next.
‘Please, just tell me what I am.’ You begged, so tired of having spent your entire life not knowing the most basic thing about you.
‘Doyoung, she needs to know.’ Ten said, as Doyoung sighed.
‘Yeah, I know. There’s no easy way to tell you this y/n. The world fell into chaos slightly. Political leaders began to clash more and more with each other and, before we knew it, we were on the brink of a third world war. One that, this time, really would involve the whole world, and with the creation of nuclear weapons, our government want something that would set us apart from everywhere else. He decided to turn his intentions to modifying humans. He exposed children to certain chemicals and levels of radiation when they were young to see if anything had an affect on them. Eventually he found success, but at a very large cost.’
‘How large?’ You whispered, scared of the answer. Ten spoke up this time, making you turn your head towards him.
‘He tested on over three hundred thousand children. You eight are the only survivors.’
You didn’t know how to react. Eight out of three hundred thousand. Who would be willing to pay that high of a price?
‘What does that make me? A weapon?’ You asked, your voice quiet, almost inaudible.
‘You were human, at some point. Now, we’re not sure. I would believe the closest definition is a mutant of some kind, but y/n, you have to remember that this doesn’t define you.’ Doyoung leaned forward but you shook your head.
‘I’m not human, I’m a mutant, a weapon, an experiment. I’m nothing more than an experiment, a toy for you to play with in your lab. That why I’m prisoner here. I’m a monster.’ You were spiralling, caught up in a mess of reality and new information, you couldn’t control where your mind was heading.
‘Y/n, Doyoung is right, this doesn’t define who you are.’ Ten tried to reassure you but you whirled on him.
‘Doesn’t define me? Yes it does! It literally is what I am, how can you say it doesn’t define me?’ You accused.
‘Because you’re more than that! Beneath all that’s been done to you, all we’ve done to you, we know that you’re people. You are human, you think and feel as we do, you love like we do, you die like we do. And who gives a damn about what made you what you are. It’s who you are that matters.’ Doyoung stood up during his small speech. He somehow managed to verbally slap some sense into you, allowing you a brief moment to calm your mind.
‘The others need to know.’ You blurted, your thoughts suddenly drifting back to Jeno.
‘Yes, and we will tell them.’ Ten reassured.
‘Tonight.’ You insisted. ‘They’ve been through exactly the same thing I have. Why should I get to know the truth and they shouldn’t?’
Both Doyoung and Ten looked at each other, having short, silent conversation before Doyoung sighed and agreed with you.
‘Ok, tonight. Ten go and fetch them from their cells. The doors are locked so the corridors should be empty of guards.’
Ten nodded and left the room quickly, stopping briefly to scan the hallways and only continuing once he knew it was clear. The door automatically shut softly behind him. You suddenly remembered something else Doyoung said, causing you to turn back to face him once more.
‘What changed your mind?’ You asked, only receiving a very confused look from the doctor in return. ‘You’ve worked on us for years, as a trainee then as a real doctor. You haven’t had this position long, so why are you risking everything you’ve worked for? When did you start to think of us as humans?’
A guilty look crossed Doyoung’s face.
‘I’ve done some terrible things to you, to all of you, over the years, and I cannot apologise enough for that. I always thought... that we were doing the right thing, the thing that should be done. We needed something to set us apart or, before we knew it, we would be a speck of dust on the ground, bombed within an inch of our lives. But that was over ten years ago, and you guys haven’t left the facility once. I kept telling myself that it would be worth it, that this was all being done for a reason, and that you would understand that. But then I was in the lab and something made me look at a subject differently. The way he acted, it was something so vulnerable, so human, that it changed my perspective completely.’
‘What was it?’ You asked, immersed in Doyoung emotional words.
‘It was Jeno. He was undergoing a procedure that had been done a thousand times before, but the head doctor that day decided to make some changes. I don’t know what he did, but Jeno started to scream, and not just shout out in a bit of pain, I mean, properly scream. I could hear the strain on his vocal cords and he started crying out and begging for help like I had never heard anyone beg before and he kept calling for the same person over and over.’
‘Who did he call out for?’ Your voice was shaking slightly, your emotions running high at the thought of what could have made Jeno scream out like that.
Doyoung looked at you, complete sincerity in his eyes.
‘You. He called out for you.’
Before you could reply, or even process this information, the door to the lab burst open and the other boys all piled in. Jeno spotted you, alive, awake and well and made his way towards you immediately. He pulled you in for a tight hug as soon as he reached you, wrapping his arms securely around your waist.
‘Oh thank god, you’re okay.’ He whispered. He pulled back and brushed the hair out of your face, holding your cheeks in his hands while he searched your face for any sign of pain. ‘Are you okay?’
You nodded in response. ‘Yeah I’m okay. But you guys need to hear this.’
You watched as Doyoung and Ten explained to the other boys what they had just told you. You watched as they went through exactly the same reactions that you did. And you watched as each of them managed to process this information in their own way.
‘There’s only one thing left to tell you all.’ Ten said, watching as eight pairs of scared eyes looked up at him. ‘We’re going to break you out.’
‘I’m sorry, you’re gonna what?’ Renjun asked, voicing the shock you were all feeling.
‘You’re more than just subjects, more than just experiments, you’re people. And you don’t get the chance to just be people when you’re trapped here. So tomorrow, we’re gonna break you out.’ Doyoung explained.
‘Tomorrow?’ Chenle questioned and both Doyoung and Ten nodded in confirmation.
‘What’s happens after that? Where do we go next? All we’ve known is this facility, so what will we do outside of it?’ Jaemin piped up, thankfully thinking ahead for all of you.
‘I already have a truck ready for us to escape in tomorrow, from there we will drive out of range so that they can’t detect us. Doyoung and I know some people who are willing to help. We’ll stay with them for a while and then, eventually, reintegrate the eight of you back into the world, and allow you to lie the normal life you’ve always been deprived of.’ Ten spoke. You sat there silently, just taking all this information in. You were getting out, and not only that, but also going to get the life you never thought you would ever be able to. You weren’t sure what life would be like on the outside, but as long as you had the guys there, you knew you would be okay.
You felt a pair of eyes on you and turned your head, only to catch Jeno staring at you with an unreadable expression on his face. He looked away as soon as you noticed him, clearing his throat before asking one last question.
‘So... how are we getting out of here?’
---
You lay in bed that night, unable to sleep. You knew that you could probably do with a good rest, but your mind was so active that it was impossible. You couldn’t tell if Jeno was awake too, worried that if he wasn’t you might wake him from your constant moving. Doyoung revelation about him calling out for you when in pain was plaguing your mind as well. You had often found yourself thinking of Jeno when you were undergoing procedures in the lab, but you had always dismissed it as wondering what state you would be in when you were returned to your roommate. Was it possible that it was something more? You can’t deny that you’ve felt something for Jeno, he was kind, compassionate, empathetic and so damn loyal to you.
‘Y/n?’ Jeno’s voice disrupted your thoughts, causing you to jump out of your skin.
You swallowed before replying.
‘Yeah?’
‘Oh you’re awake too.’ He mumbled.
‘Yeah... I can’t sleep.’ You admitted.
‘Me neither.’
The conversation stopped for a minute and, for the first time since you met him, you didn’t know what to say to Jeno. You felt colder in your bed than you ever had before and you wanted nothing more than to crawl into his and fall asleep there.
‘Y/n?’ Jeno spoke again, much softer this time.
‘Yeah?’ You whispered back.
‘I’m cold...’ He confessed and you could almost hear the blush that you knew would be dusting his cheeks.
Before you let the surge of courage you felt pass, you climbed out of your bed and padded softly over to his.
‘Move over.’ You instructed, gently tapping his side.
He did just as you told him too, moving himself to the edge so that you could climb in. You lay facing each other for a while and you found yourself unable to tear your gaze away from his eyes. He lifted up a hand to move a stray piece of hair out of your face and sighed.
You shut your eyes slowly, hoping that by being closer to him you would be able to get some rest. The only problem was, the beds that you slept on were not the largest and could only really fit one person. You found yourself almost pressed up against his chest and that made it very hard for you to calm your rapidly beating heart.
‘Hold on, bear with me for a second.’ Jeno mumbled as he moved himself around slightly. You squeaked in surprise when you felt his hands come to waist, pulling you halfway onto his chest as he settled down on his back.
‘Is this ok?’ He asked hesitantly, and you nodded in response.
Even though you were practically lying on top of him, you couldn’t deny that this position was much more comfortable. From here you could hear his heartbeat and you allowed the consistent rhythm of it to help lull you to sleep.
You wrapped your arm around his waist, the other coming up to rest on his chest as his arms found their way around your shoulder and stroking your hair. You closed your eyes and felt yourself finally drift off to sleep, almost missing the soft sentence Jeno whispered into your hair.
‘I don’t know what will happen once we get out of here, but please just... don’t leave me. I think I need you more than you know.’
---
For as long as you can remember, you have woken up to the sound of the high pitched repetitive beep of the alarm. Not today.
You were quickly pulled out of your sleep to the sound of alarms blaring, red lights flashing and shouting in the corridor. You and Jeno shared a sleepy but scared look before quickly climbing out of bed. You bit your lip slightly in embarrassment as you remembered the position that the two of you slept in last night. Jeno approached your door and pushed on it gently. The door swung open and the two of you stared in disbelief.
You followed him out into the corridor and found yourself standing in the middle of the chaos. Guards and doctors were running up and down the corridors shouting commands and arguing with each other while the eight of you all stood in your doorways, confused to high heavens.
‘Grab them now!’ You heard one of the doctors yell as you were finally noticed. ‘They’re not getting away.’
You saw a guard lunge for Chenle, who quickly turned into a fly and disappeared from sight. Three other guards ran towards you and Jeno, their intentions obvious and the two of you immediately began to move. Jeno threw up a gust of air, knocking them off their feet, while you pulled doors open and moved their legs so that they were constantly tripping over.
‘Guys we have to get out of here now!’ Mark yelled over the noise.
He suddenly appeared from nowhere, making you jump.
‘They somehow found out about our plan, either we leave now, or we’re never getting out.’ And with that he was gone, disappearing at the speed of light.
Jeno opened up a hailstorm on the guard in front of him, his efforts useless against the tough armour that they were wearing. You pulled out a metal drawer from one of the cells and used your telekinesis to ram in into the guard’s leg.
He crumpled where he stood, his head landing hard on the concrete. Your eyes went wide as he lay there unmoving for a second, until he let out a breath and groaned in pain. Jeno’s grabbed your arm and shouted something at you that you didn’t quite catch, you eye still fixated on the guard in front of you.
You really were dangerous. You had hurt someone. And it had taken very little effort from you to do so. What could you do if you really wanted to hurt someone? How badly could you hurt someone without meaning to?
You lost focus on your surroundings, Jeno’s sudden pull on your arm causing you to lose balance. You managed not to fall over, but it slowed you down. You forced yourself to focus, to think rationally, to prioritise leaving and then you could figure out the extent of your abilities.
But you were too late. One of the doctors noticed your stumble and grabbed a taser from a fallen guard. They quickly pushed it into, electrocuting you where you stood. You mouth fell open as a scream tore out of it and your body collapsed onto the ground.
Your mind went fuzzy, everything around you slowing down as you tried to take it all in. You vaguely registered Jeno screaming out for you as you lay on the cold floor. You lifted your eyes and stared into the open door in front of you. It took you a few seconds to realise that you were staring into the lab. You watched as one of the guards cornered Doyoung, who stood with his hands up trying to explain something. They didn’t listen however, and you watched as the guard pulled a gun out of nowhere and squeezed the trigger.
Doyoung doubled over, a red patch forming on his stomach. His back hit the counter behind him and he sank down towards the ground, the pain evident on his face. The red mark on his shirt was growing by the second until it covered half of his lower stomach. You found yourself staring into the dull, lifeless eyes of the one doctor here who had actually tried to look out for you.
Your eyes welled up with tears, blurring your vision. You barely felt the arms that hooked under your elbows and began to drag you down the corridor. The last things you registered before you blacked out were Jeno screaming for you, and Doyoung’s dead body.
---
‘God this kid is a pain.’
‘I know man, I don’t get why we have to be stuck here with her.’
‘Doyoung though? Hmmm, I didn’t see that betrayal coming.’
‘Really? Out of everyone, I’m least surprised that it was him. He always had the weakest stomach when it came to things like this.’
You heard the voices before you even realised that you were awake. The guards in your room were having a casual chat while they waited for you to wake up. Your head was pounding and your mouth tasted like pennies. You scrunched up your face in discomfort, trying to open your eyes but with little success.
‘Oh, look. I think she’s coming back...’
You groaned out slightly, your mind suddenly becoming aware of the pain your body was in. You forced your eyes open, regretting that choice as soon as you were blinded by the harsh white light of whatever room you were currently being kept in.
You blinked a couple of times, trying to adjust to your surroundings, before taking a quick look around. You definitely weren’t in your cell anymore. You found yourself chained to the wall, literally. There were heavy metal cuffs around your wrists, ankles, stomach and even your neck. Each of those cuffs were attached to a chain that was embedded into the wall behind you.
They had taken every measure possible to imprison you somewhere they knew you wouldn’t be able to escape from.
You lifted your head and found yourself staring at two guards, both with their helmets off. They looked at you with such patronising looks on their faces, but you couldn’t focus on them. Your eyes were trained on the cupboard behind them, an open cupboard that you could see was filled with guard uniforms.
One of the guards followed your line of sight and laughed.
‘You’re not in our cloak room, don’t worry sweet heart. You’re in the maximum security room at the end of the hall.’
Your blood ran cold at his revelation. No one who entered this room ever made it out alive. But then, that was before you learnt that there were only eight of you actually being held in this facility... You really had no idea what this meant for you.
‘Allow me to explain.’ The other guard took a step forwards. ‘Every time you get drugged and tiptoe off the the rose room to do your work, we walk in and grab a random person standing next to one of you and drag them back here. Now their job is to just scream and kick and draw as much attention to themselves as they can while everyone else ignores them. Once they get here do you know what they do? They get back into their guard uniform and go back to work. All those people you know, everyone in the rose room with you, all of them are one of us.’ He let out a laugh. ‘I can’t believe you were stupid enough to think that they were real subjects!’
The first guard joined in, enjoying taunting you when you were at your most vulnerable.
‘God you really are stupid aren’t you?’ He commented. ‘You thought you were getting out? You’re never going to get out of here. You’re simply going to be stuck here for the rest of your life.’
The other guard laughed again.
‘Yeah, you know that war you were made for. It’s not going to happen so you really aren’t ever getting out. You’re too scared to hurt one of us, how would you ever be useful in a war?’
‘God you’re such a waste of space. I can’t believe that out of the hundreds of thousands that went through the initial testing, she was one of the few to survive.’
‘Tell me about it. Why is she even in maximum security? She probably wouldn’t hurt a fly.’
The guards continued with their taunts, each one crueler than the last. You tried everything you could to block them out, but it was difficult. Especially when they were right, you had been useless. It’s because you were too scared to hurt a guard’s leg that all of you are stuck here forever. This is your fault.
‘No it isn’t.’ Jaemin’s voice echoed through your head, startling you. ‘Ignore them y/n. None of this is your fault, it’s theirs. Don’t forget who put you there in the first place. Now, listen to me, you need to get out of there. Now. I don’t care how you do it, but y/n, it’s time to go.’
The guards continued to taunt you, telling you how powerless you were and you started to feel your anger grow. Jaemin was right, these people did put you in here. They imprisoned you, tortured you and the people you care about. They put you through hours upon hours of pain, just to tell you that you weren’t good enough.
You pulled your hands closed into fists and focused your mind like you never have before. You channelled your anger into your being, thinking of everything you’ve lost, everything they’ve taken from you. A family, a normal life, the ability to just be human. You felt the power rumble from within you. It was like nothing you had ever felt before. It grew from your soul, feeding off your raw emotions, evolving and mutating as it made its way throughout your limbs. It finally reached your head and your opened your eyes. They were pure gold.
The guards stopped their conversation and stared at you in fear, completely at a loss as to what they should do.
You finally understood. You weren’t human. You were so much more than that. And it was time they learnt just how powerful you could be.
You threw your head back, and screamed.
You unleashed all the power within you as a sheer bolt of energy. The chains imprisoning you shattered, falling to the floor. The guards were throw backwards, both of them hitting the wall with a sickening crack, and your door was blown off its hinges. You stood and began to move, feeling every part and every being in the universe working with you and you knew, this is what true power felt like.
You had no idea how to come down from it, you were so taken over that you didn’t feel the hand that gently found its way into yours until you were being turned where you stood and found yourself looking into Jeno’s eyes.
‘Come back to me y/n.’ He whispered, pulling you into his chest and stroking your hair. You let go of all the anger you were feeling, choosing instead to ground yourself with the boy in front of you. ‘We have to go.’
‘I heard.’ You mumbled, pulling yourself away from him chest.
You ran through the corridor, gathering all the boys on the way. Jeno had managed to create a mini hurricane in his room, effectively blowing his way out of the cell he was in. Jisung quite literally just barrelled straight through his door, but he once again misjudged his strength and couldn’t stop himself. He kept going straight into the door on the opposite side of the corridor, luckily bursting it open it for Renjun.
It the situation weren’t so dire you probably would have fallen over laughing at the scene in front of you.
Chenle turned into a midge and flew through the key hole of his cell door, making you admire the boy’s talent to find a loophole in every scenario. Jaemin used his mind control to get the guard who was watching him to open the door for him. Also making the guard bow for him as he walked out as a finishing touch. You couldn’t help but smile at that. Jisung pulled off the doors of both Mark’s and Donghyuck’s cells and the eight of you ran.
You turned a corner and barrelled straight into a guard. All of you threw up your hands, ready to fight, until you saw that it was Ten. Instead of getting a punch in the face, Ten found himself with eight superhuman teens hugging him with all their might.
‘Ok, let’s do this later, the truck’s outside. Go!’
He pushed you all off his and pointed towards the door in front of you. You ran towards it, turning your head to the left as you passed the lab and not missing Doyoung’s body, still lying there on the floor. You swallowed back your tears, promising that you would mourn him properly later, and pushed forwards. You burst out of the doors, shocked beyond belief to find yourself in a lobby of some kind. Your entire life, you thought you had been in the sub basement section of a facility, but really you had been above ground the whole time.
You didn’t have time to marvel however, because, as soon as you were spotted, the alarms went off. They blared through the building and you took that as your cue to leave.
Jisung ran first, easily breaking the main doors open, despite their heavy lock, and the eight of you poured outside. You saw the truck that Ten had mentioned, the trademark number 10 a sign that it was yours. It was on the outside of the barbed wire fence that surrounded the facility. The fence was too high to climb so you took a deep breath and held your arms out. You pulled them apart, imaging a rip and watched as the fence tore in two.
You all sprinted through the fence and piled into the truck that was waiting for you. There was a fabric roof and some metal beams making the skeleton on the inside so you held onto that as you climbed in. Mark moved around to the front seat and you look out, waiting for Ten. You needed him to drive this truck as none of you could.
Ten finally appeared, running at full speed towards you.
‘Go!’ He screamed. ‘Just go!’
You wanted to shout back to him but you never got the chance to. The gunshot rang out loudly and Ten fell straight to the ground. He lay face down in the grass, not breathing, not moving a muscle.
He was dead.
‘Mark... Mark drive. We need to go.’ Donghyuck’s shaky voice tore you out of your trance. Mark moved himself so that he was in the driver’s seat and turned the key.
‘Ok, I can figure this out.’ He reassured himself.
‘Well can you do it now because we have some rather unfriendly company arriving in about thirty seconds. And you don’t want to know what they’ll do if they catch us.’ Donghyuck warned, making all your eyes widen in fear. When the boy who can see the future tells you that something is going to happen, you’ve learnt that the best thing to do would be to listen to him.
Mark moved the gear stick into ‘D’ and slammed his foot down on a random pedal. Luckily he seemed to get the right one because you all lurched forwards, speeding away from the facility. Mark’s super speed means that he has extremely fast reflexes, making it very useful for when he needs to learn a new skill. He reacted quickly to the movements of the car and it didn’t take long before you were smoothly driving away from the prison that was also happened to be the only home you’ve ever know.
Renjun shuffled in his seat, facing his body out the back of the truck and towards the facility. He lifted up his hands, turning his palms out before suddenly clenching them into fists. He then sat back down, his back hitting the seat as he let out a deep sigh.
‘Just a quick image of an empty field. It’ll throw them off the scent long enough for us to get out of here.’ He explained before leaning his head back and shutting his eyes.
You looked back at the large building that was disappearing rapidly into the distance and thought of Doyoung and Ten. The two who risked everything so that you could all be where you are now. And they were the two who paid the ultimate price.
You felt your eyes beginning to droop, the gentle movements of the car lulling your tiring body to sleep. You felt Jeno’s arm come around your shoulder and you leant into his warmth, relishing in the comfort of being close to him. Only now did you realise how exhausted you really were. You allowed your head to fall onto Jeno’s shoulder, feeling his arm tighten slightly around you, and you felt safe.
For the first time, ever, you felt safe.

Chapter One ※※※※※ Chapter Three
I open my eyes having my vision blur for a little. I blink a few times, getting a better look at the room I was in. Room? It was very bright, I look at the window and guess it must be around seven in the morning.
I glance around the room, seeing my mother lying on a two-seater sofa. I see my broken arm and the heart monitor wires attached to my chest.
“What the...?” I let the confusion in my voice die, for my dry throat. I see no cell phone near me to confirm the time or date, how long have I slept? I carefully seat down on the bed, so as not to hurt my arm, and call my mother, who doesn't hear me at first, making me raise my voice more, scratching my throat.
She gets up startled and, as soon as she sees me awake, comes quickly to my side. Her hands quickly grasp my face and she distributes several kisses across my cheeks.
“Thank God, you're awake! How are you? Do you need anything?” the bombardment of questions leaves me lost. “ I'll call the nurse.” she leaves the room before I can say anything.
God, I just wanted a glass of water and to understand what happened.
She returned with a nurse who came in smiling sympathetically. My mother held my hand, reassuring and comforting me.
“Hello, Miss McGonagall. I'm glad you're awake. How are you feeling?” she asks as she writes something down on her clipboard.
“Thirsty.” I announce, desperate for a glass of water.
“Oh, of course!” my mother takes a bottle of water from the small table next to the sofa and helps me to take a sip. Finally.
I turn my attention back to the nurse, now more relieved by the water.
“I am fine. A little sleepy and confused. And my arm is sore.”
“That's normal.” she continues writing down some things and fiddling with the equipment. I decide to end the mystery.
“I suffered a car accident, didn't I?” I ask, alternating my gaze between my mother and the nurse, who both look relieved.
“Yes, a drunk driver drove through the traffic light and crashed into your car. You only broke your arm and twisted your foot, besides some bruises.” the nurse explains, killing my curiosity.
Car accident. I remember being in the car, stopped at the light, but I don't remember the impact. Thank God I had survived and without many sequels.
“We thought that you might also have suffered a lost of memory, but that apparently wasn't the case.” my mother had a huge smile on her face.
“Still, we need to ask you some questions.” I turn my attention back to the nurse. “What is your full name?”
“Marnie Elizabeth McGonagall.” I answer immediately.
“Your birthday date?”
“October 17th, 1996.” I answer after thinking for a few seconds. Their smiles widen with each answer.
“How old are you then?”
“Twenty years old.” that's when the smile disappeared, but they didn't say anything.
“You slept for two days. What day is it today?” she asked attentively.
“Two days... I think today is day six.”
“What month and what year, dear?” This time, my mother asks the question.
“March 2017.” I arch my eyebrows, as if it were obvious. But from the look on their faces, I was wrong. I stare at my mother, seeing her with teary eyes.
“Mrs. Williams, please wait outside. I will pass the information to the doctor so that you can talk.”
I see my mother leave crying and get desperate. What is happening?
“Did I lose my memory?” I ask fearfully.
“We don't know yet. You just woke up, we need to take some time and see what happens. You will probably be going through some tests in a few minutes, so you need to be fasting still. After that I'll call a nurse to help you take a shower.”
She leaves and I find myself alone. Now more awake and aware, I notice near the window some vases of flowers, cards, and two happy-face balloons. I smile, feeling comforted by the affection.
A few minutes later, a nurse came in, taking me to the examination. It would be an MRI scan to see which areas of my brain were affected. I feel completely sick; what if I really had lost my memory? How many years have I lost?
However, before the examination, I would take a blood sample. So I went into a room and they sat me down in a very comfortable armchair. I hate blood test, just the sight of the needle makes me want to throw up. When this torturous part was over, they asked me if I preferred to go through the procedure sedated and I said no, I may not like to be in closed places, but to be pierced again is just too much.
I lay down on the gurney and they fixed me up with headphones so the noise wouldn't bother me, a blanket because it was so cold, and they put something like a mask over my head, only taller, like a cap, but hollowed out. At the same moment that the stretcher starts going into that hole, I close my eyes.
The procedure lasted about 30 minutes, and during this time I tried to stay calm and remember as many things as possible. Soon after, I was taken back to the room, finding my mother there with a nurse who would help me take a shower, it was what I wanted most.
I open my eyes and feel my body freeze when I see my image in the mirror. Not only because of the scratches, but also because my hair was short and lighter at the ends, I looked like a different person.
Another surprise, was when I saw a tattoo in the middle of my chest, taking the valley of my breasts and going all the way down to the bottom of them.
“Did you let me do this?” I ask my mother, while the nurse washes my hair.
“Marnie, you don't live with me anymore, you are an adult who pays your own bills and has your own life. You don't ask my permission for nothing else.” she laughs at my shocked face. I don't remember my job, or my apartment, I must have forgotten it for many years.
Her cell phone rings and she leaves the bathroom. The nurse continues to teach me how to take care of the cast. I take advantage of the moment alone and investigate my time in the hospital.
“Have many people come to visit me?” I ask as she begins to comb my hair.
“A lot!” she smiles sympathetically. “Yours friends came at all visiting hours and brought lots of balloons and teddy bears. The head nurse sent them home with half of them.” she recalls laughing. I didn't know I had so many friends besides Bethany.
“Did my boyfriend come?” I ask anxiously, after all, I was on my way to see him.
“It was hard to get him to leave. He spent the first 24 hours here, slept in the hallway and everything. You're a lucky girl.” she blinks at me. I feel my heart race. I just want to see him!
Again, I go back to the room and this time I stay. A breakfast arrived and I was starving.
“Porridge?” I ask disappointedly as I see the tray.
“You've been unconscious for two days, you can't want to eat a mountain of pancakes, you have to start slowly.” mom warns.
We’re both in the room, and it’s an awkward, tense silence. I could see a look of relief on my mother's face to see me awake, but deep inside, there was a glint of discomfort. I conclude that this is why she is avoiding looking at me. I finished my coffee against my will and straightened up, in order to get some answers.
“Have I really lost my memory?” I ask in a clear and direct manner. She looks at me with a mixture of indecision and weariness.
“I don't know, dear.” she moves closer to the bed, caressing my face. “You have a wrong date in your head, but the chance of it being temporary is huge, so stay calm and let's wait for the test results. Now, get some rest.” she gives me a kiss on the forehead before leaving the room.
I end up falling asleep after a few minutes of watching TV. I wake up to another nurse calling me, my results are out, and the doctor wanted to talk. She passes me to a wheelchair and takes me to the doctor's office. When the door opens, I see my mother with her eyes red, the doctor with a gentle smile and Luke Hemmings looking at me in affliction.
I don't hide my confusion. Luke Hemmings?! What a famous guy is doing here?!
“Is he the one who hit my car?” I ask readily, I wouldn't be surprised, these famous people drink and think the world is theirs.
Luke clenched his jaw and his gaze seemed lifeless, he was completely uncomfortable. I bet he didn't like the truth. I ignore his unnecessary presence and turn my attention back to the doctor.
“No, Miss McGonagall. I believe Mr. Hemmings is a very close friend.” I can see that the doctor is careful with his words.
Close?
When I look back at him, I see him hugging my mother on the side, who is struggling to hold back her tears.
“What?” I let out in a whisper, alternating my gaze between them and the doctor.
“Miss McGonagall, you suffered a car accident two days ago.” he begins.
“Yes, I suffered it.” I state.
“And as sequels, you broke an arm, twisted a foot, and, unfortunately, lost part of your memory.”
It was like a bomb falling on me. I had no protection or counterattack. The suspicion had evolved into truth, and now, I had nothing to do but feel angry and out of control of my own life.
“But I talked about it being a car accident, before anyone told me. I remember being in the car, I don't remember the impact, but I remember being in the car.” I try to find a way out.
“What were you going to do?” he asks curiously. I force my mind and remember.
“I was going to see my boyfriend.” before the doctor could say anything, a different hopeful voice steals my attention and I see Luke letting go of my mother, approaching both of us.
“ It's true!” He looks at the doctor. How does he know it's true? He doesn't even know me! “We were supposed to meet for lunch.”
What?! Where did this guy come from and how does he have the courage to say something like that? I look behind my mother for help, but she is focused on Luke and the doctor.
“We? I don't know you.” My voice comes out desperate, I was already losing patience with him.
“Marnie, what's your boyfriend's name?” Luke leans one hand on the table and one on my chair, and asks me in a desperate tone, as if his life depends on my answer.
I look deep into his blue eyes, annoyed that he is getting in the middle of my life. I fill my mouth and reply.
“Stephen Maynard! My boyfriend's name is Stephen Maynard.” I raise my eyebrows as if to say ‘happy?’
His jaw locked again, and his eyes watered. He bit his lower lip and left the room, slamming the door.
“What is his problem?” I'll ask my mother and the doctor.
“ I'll go see if he's all right.” mom leaves the room and I stay with the doctor, who doesn't seem to care much about everything that has happened.
“Miss McGonagall, you suffered a car accident two days ago and were unconscious during that time. I know it may be difficult to accept that you have lost some of your memory, but unfortunately that is what happened. Your brain deleted the last three years and maybe even an older part, we have no way of knowing yet. The point is that this amnesia can be momentary and perhaps today you will remember everything, or it can last longer.” he explains calmly.
“Could it last forever?” I ask fearfully.
It was strange to think that I don't remember three years of my life, no matter how hard I try, nothing comes to my mind. I became agonized and curious to know what I was forgetting. I didn't want to do any tests, I wanted to talk to my mom and dad, see Bethany, my best friend and gossip, I wanted to see Stephen, where is he when I need him? The nurse said he didn't leave my side.
The door opens and my mom walks in again, her eyes are still red, but she seems a little more calm. She sits down next to me and holds my hand.
“Yes, it can be permanent, so you shouldn't force anything. After discharge you will go back to your normal routine and maybe something will be a point to remember everything, or at least half of it. These amnesias are often just traumatic and take you back to other traumatic times, like they want to spare you from something.”
“These last three years have been a lot of change for you, dear, that makes total sense. You said you were going to see Stephen, remember for what?” she asks curiously.
“Our anniversary. I was going to drop off his present and celebrate. Where is he anyway? The nurse said he hasn't left my side. Even an annoying celebrity is here!”
“ I'll let you two talk for a while, I think we owe it to Miss McGonagall.” the doctor interrupts before my mother replies. “But, remember, miss, without forcing anything, you'll have plenty of time to find out everything. Excuse me.” he leaves the room, leaving us alone.
“Well?” I ask my mother, who looked totally uncomfortable.
“Honey, on that day that you remember, that last memory, you found Stephen with Bethany, how can I put it? In a not good situation. You broke up.”
I always knew that my parents didn't like Stephen, thought he was a bad influence, but to say that he cheated on me with my best friend bordered on the ridiculous.
“Mom…”
“I swear it's true, I know it hurts, and it really hurt to see you go through this. But honey, you overcame it, you overcame everything and you found a wonderful man who loves you, appreciates you, respects you and cares for you.”
“Such an amazing man who is not here.” I raise my free arm, supporting my argument, showing that only the two of us are in the room.
“My love, he is here, he has been here all the time, he only left last night because everyone insisted.” the look she gives me, wanting me to put all the pieces together makes my stomach turn.
“No!” I laugh, unbelieving what I was imagining, "Luke can't be my boyfriend.”
“Why not?” my mother's displeased tone surprises me, does she approve of him?
“I don't even know him. He's famous and I'm not. Where would we meet?” the pieces just don't fit together.
“Your life has changed a lot, dear, to the point that you meet him and his friends. To the point that you could afford this hospital.” really, my family couldn't afford a private room and all the tests that I would have to do. “Marnie, you have become a model.” I can imagine a bomb exploding in my head.
“That's a lot of information!”I cover my face, trying to take it all in.
“I'm sorry, honey, if I could only pass this whole situation to myself and let you off the hook.” she squeezes my thigh.
“I know, it's just so agonizing not remembering. I mean, did I yell at my 'boyfriend' and tell him I was with another guy? Another who in my mind is still my current one and who I still have feelings for?” I let out a desperate breath. I dry my tears, angry with myself and with the drunk who hit my car.
“Honey, it is only the first hours, calmly, we will tell you everything and you will get used to it, who knows, maybe remembering until everything is in place or close to it? It's not your fault, it's just a consequence! Everything will be fine, I promise you.” she hugs me and I allow myself to cry, her hand caressing my hair, giving me peace. “What matters is that you are alive.”
“What day is it today?” I ask after a few seconds.
“June 13th, 2020.” I feel the second bomb explode, it's very weird.
“Do you and dad like him?” I ask, curious.
“Very much, it was your best choice.” she smiles.
“And Dad, where is he?” her expression becomes distressed.
“Hm, he had to take a trip right on the day of the accident, but he is already trying to get back.”
Three years! That's what I had lost. Apparently my boyfriend, or rather ex-boyfriend, had cheated on me and I was with a world-famous and beloved guy, of whom I knew nothing but his name and that he was in a band, which had the underpants song.
I went back to the room and spent much of the afternoon trying to assimilate everything. I needed more information, to talk to more people. Deep down, I wanted to believe that this was a big theater, but I know that it is impossible. Unfortunately, I have lost my memory and my hands are tied trying to fit everything in and remember something.
The door opened and unlike what I had imagined, Luke came in holding a bouquet of gerberas and a box with a purple bow. He didn't expect me to be awake, and I didn't expect to be alone with him so soon.
“Sorry, I didn't know you were awake.” he says clumsily and a little lost, not knowing what to do with the box and the flowers.
“No problem, you can pretend I'm asleep, I don't want to disturb you.” he nods and I watch his movements.
I watch him exchange the yellow roses in the vase for the gerberas, my favorite flowers, and notice him collecting the cards and giving them in my direction.
“I believe you are very curious to read them.” he won't come close and I feel bad for that, he must hate me.
“Thank you.” I give my best smile, trying to smooth things over. Luke continues to hold the box, not knowing what to do.
“Hm, this... this little box, it's for you!” he extends the box, still away from the bed. ”Your old cell phone broke in the accident, and I bought this new one. Leah and I have already backed it up, it has all the information from the old one.”
“Leah?” I can' t help but question, as I open the little box and look at the brand new cell phone.
“Uh, yes, your best friend, the current one!” He is standing at the foot of the bed and avoids looking at me.
“I don't know the password.” I say as the screen lights up.
Luke approaches, still hesitant, and positions himself beside me. He unlocks the screen and starts to show me where everything is, pictures, videos, messages and contacts. I stop for a moment and pay attention to him, while he is still talking.
With his face very close, I smell his perfume and I like the smell. I notice his long, very light hair, a beard showing signs all over his chin and jaw. Luke is handsome, I'm not impressed that I had a crush on him, but why did he have a crush on me?
I notice that he notices me staring at him, and, before he turns around, I turn my gaze to the cell phone. I feel him analyzing me, maybe trying to find the girl he loved inside me.
I take courage and stare back at him, my heart racing and my stomach churning, but not from happiness or anxiety of wanting something to happen, but from wanting nothing to happen. Even though he was a handsome and caring guy, I couldn't feel something for Luke, at least not before I worked things out with Stephen.
“Sorry about earlier today.” I whisper, not amused by my behavior.
“No need to apologize. You're just going through a very big shock.” He reassures me.
“Still, I want you to know that I'm not like that.” Luke looks at me with a raised eyebrow. “But you already know, of course.” I cover my eyes, wanting to die. Luke lets out a laugh that makes me laugh along with him.
“I know it will be difficult, but I don't mind hearing you tell me all about you again.” I can't sustain the look, it intimidates me. “By the way…” he turns away and goes to a backpack on the sofa and pulls out a book. “I brought it so you would have something to read. You read it last year and said it was so good you wish you could forget to read it again.” as soon as Luke finishes speaking, I can't stand his choice of words and start laughing and he seems to notice, becoming embarrassed.
“That's fine, thank you very much.” I oblige and allow myself to lift my body, giving him a kiss on the cheek.
He turns more red and sits down on the couch, leaving me with my presents. I glance over the novel, reading the synopsis that catches my attention, ‘When It Happens’. I grab my cell phone and go into my social medias, startling myself by seeing my insta full of pictures in Italy, clothing campaigns and some pictures with him. I look up to Luke, who is wearing glasses and reading a book.
It’s strange not to be attracted to him, but to feel peace, as if everything is right. I’m sorry that I don't remember him, since he seemed like such an amazing guy and so kind to me. My mind comes up with a huge list of questions I want to ask him. How did we meet? How long have we been together? Do we fight a lot? But at the same time that I am insanely curious to talk to my boyfriend, his presence intimidates me; after all, he is a famous guy. Faced with this, I keep quiet.
I turn my attention to the thousands of cards on my lap, reading one by one. Many texts wishing me better, saying that if I woke up some would cut the hair, or change the color, among other promises. Leah, Calum, Ashton, Kyleen, Noah, Michael; so many names, but none that I feel familiar with. I need to see Stephen.
“Could you check with the nurse for something I can eat?” I ask timidly, not wanting to get in his way. However, Luke quickly gets up and provides my order.
I take advantage of the moment alone and dial the number I still remembered, after three rings Stephen's voice comes on and for the first time in hours, I feel in control of the situation.
“Hi, it's Marnie!” I feel my heart racing so fast I think about the possibility that I'm going to throw up.
“Wow, this is a call I never thought I would get again.” I don't answer because I feel bad, apparently the ending wasn't good at all. “To what do I owe the honor?”
“Hm.” I clear my throat. “I need to see you, to talk, actually. I don't know if you know, but I was in an accident recently.”
“Yes, I read about it.”
“So, the problem is that I lost part of my memory and, well, the last thing I remember is that I was on my way to your house, to celebrate our anniversary.”
“What anniversary?” his voice is curious and cautious.
“The one in 2017.” the line becomes dead silent and I don't wait for an answer. “Look, I am really lost and I need to talk to you and understand everything.”
“Are you sure your parents and your amazing boyfriend haven't already told you everything?” the mocking tone annoys me a little.
“Honestly? I didn't really believe what my mom told me. Would you mind coming to the hospital early tomorrow morning? I'll probably be discharged in the afternoon and well, I know some people won't be happy to see you here.”
“No problem, it would be an honor to tell you the truth. See you tomorrow, Lizzie.”
The affectionate nickname he always used for me makes my stomach turn. Stephen never liked my name and the fact that he didn't know how to make a nickname out of it, so he called me Lizzie.
I don't know if I did the right thing by calling Stephen, but I need answers and to understand everything that had happened between us, until I came into Luke's arms.
Luke...
Where did we bump into each other and intertwine? He is a famous guy, has great friends, could date any famous girl, a fan, someone who knows him well and wants him, why me? The thoughts drown me as I look at another picture of us on his profile.
“Sorry for the long delay, my mom called, she wanted to hear from you.” Luke's cheeks are flushed and the glasses that used to occupy his face are now hanging from the collar of his shirt. “The nurse will bring some soup in a moment.” I wrinkle my nose and mouth. I don’t like soup. “I know, but that's what the doctor ordered.”
It scares me how he knows me and how I know nothing about him, other than that he sings the underwear song and that he sang with One Direction.

Humans are Space Orcs, “You Survive We Thrive
Things are heating up with Krill’s mini plot line. Sorry I posted a little late today :) Hope you like it
“So, what do you think?”
….
“This is… disturbing, most disturbing.”
“That poor?”
The psychologist, a sturdy little vrul, steel grey in color, with red-tinted orange eyes looked up from where he was examining the projected data rolling in lines of minutely scripted characters through the air to vanish.
He had no issue with his divided attention, continuing to read the scrolling data as he spoke with the official, “That bad, I have never read a psychological evaluation this….  Strange.”
“Psychological degradation.”
The doctor shook his head, “That is what seems strange about it. There WAS no psychological degradation. His intelligence quotient remains high enough that the test cannot accurately represent it in numbers. He not only succeeded in all our tests, but often broke them from the inside going out. He shows extreme scores on logical thinking, and procedural memory, but the strange part is his creative problem solving has skyrocketed enough to break the test. There is no degradation, but his scores and IMPROVING. I even created a matrix for emotional intelligence, not a perfect test, but  think accurate enough, and he scores extremely well on that.”
There was  a pause between the two of them.
“Did you think to test him against the human? See if maybe the changes could be explained by that?”
The psychologist looked on miffed, almost insulted, “Of course I took that into account. That was one of the first things I did.” He switched the projected information, “The human’s scores are….. Well they are erratic at best and downright confusing at worst. Let me explain. You see this here, as far as intelligence goes, he's about as smart as the average beta, which gives him a little over average for humans. I mean you would hope that he is, but there is nothing special. His spatial intelligence is…. Well its excellent, far beyond excellent. And the same can be said about creative problem solving. Emotional intelligence is higher than the doctors both show the same in procedural memory, however a relating to semantic memory the doctor far outstrips the human. Numerical intelligence does not seem to be the human’s strong suit. In fact, I don’t think I have ever seen someone score that low before. I would say the same for episodic memory, accept worse. The human seems to think that he can remember things well, but it seems that he actually cannot.” “What does that have to do with anything.”
“Well you know how I said that the human’s intelligence scores put him at the low end of beta…..”
“Yes.”
“Well in aggregate, putting all his scores together, he would count as an alpha.”
The official stood back in surprise, “How? How can that be possible.”
“I am not entirely sure at this moment, but…. It is quite fascinating… I was thinking about going to talk to the human face to face, see if I can’t figure out this mystery.”
The official nervously shifted in place, “You should be careful, psychologist, you are starting to sound like the doctor did before he went off his rocker.”
“Has he gone off his rocker though?” The psychologist retorted.
“I mean yes, of course he has.”
“The tests say he hasn’t.”
The official harrumphed, “Well, aren't you also saying earlier that he had shown extreme increases on the aggression quotient as well as that for emotional response.”
“yes , but that hasn’t affected his other scores.”
The official sighed but then nodded, “Very well, but be careful, and don’t spend too much time with the human. He has proven to be dangerous, and may have an affect on you.”
“You worry far to much, it took the doctor months to be affected by him, and he had already showed signs of instability before that. I will be fine.”
***
“Dr…..Dr….. try to pay attention please.”
Krill lifted his head in annoyance pulling himself from a contemplation of all the stupid things the humans had probably been doing while he was gone, “I have answered all of your question. I have no idea why you would still be interested.
“We have plenty more questions.”
“No you have the same question but phrased slightly differently every time.” Krill sighed and glowered at the illuminated blue walls.
“Why are you so angry, doctor.”
He turned to look at them, “I am angry because I realize there are things about humans that I prefer over my own species sometimes.”
There was a pause.
“And what might that be?”
“Well, for one humans generally accept an answer after the tenth time I have given it. Not to mention that….. Well…. There are a lot of things.”
“Go on, we are listening.”
Krill sighed his shoulders sagging. He tried to control the human body language, but was finding it difficult, “OUr species has spent decades surviving, but isn’t the measure of a successful species one that can flourish. Our population has been stable for the past thousand years, and it has functioned the same way during that time. We don’t try to get better, we make it to, yeah that's ok and then we quit. Humans don’t just Survive, they TRIBE they are always trying to get better, to improve upon what they have. Where illness is a reason for death because we are no longer useful, they created technology to make life come to them. It has been less than a decade, and humans already live all across the galaxy. Their population has reached an all time eruption, and there is no reason it cannot get bigger. And here we are piddling along on our single planet, in upwards of ten cities doing the same thing we have done for generations.”
“The point of our species is survival.”
“We have proven to be good at that, why not go on from survival and into…… thriving.”
“The Universe is not meant for us. We are not as durable as others. Our planet is all we have.”
Krill shook his head growing more excitedly agitated, “that is where you are wrong, the bigger universe is out there for us. I have proven it. I have visited and stayed on death worlds for weeks at a time. Do you want to know the secret?”
The other Vrul looked a bit surprised, but intrigued. Looking on at Krill like he was insane.
“The secret is sociability. I survived because I had humans to help me. WIth their help I have been able to go anywhere and survive in any place. If we learn from them, we have a chance to live like they do.”
“And how is that?”
“Free.”
***
Commander Vir floated in near darkness a soft blue light illuminating him from all sides. He couldn't have said which was was up or which was was down. The only color he saw was blue, and aside from his own body there was nothing else, so he floated, rotating slowly his hands held out to his sides his legs relaxed and resting easily in the air. If he closed his eyes, he could almost imagine the warm heaviness of a space suit, and his breath against the glass, a thin barrier between him and space.
Images of his first spacewalk ran through his mind with the fiery light of a star rising behind a strange alien world.
There was a sort of soft rumbling that broke him from his thoughts, and he spun in mid-air to find a vrul float into the room. It seemed as if he was upside down though…. Or well he couldn't have said which one of them was upside down considering space didn’t seem to have a right side up or upside down.
He struggled for a few seconds rotating to face the Vrul.
Despite being the captain of a spaceship, he didn’t actually spend much of his time in zero Gs, though that was a fact he would forever be salty about.
“Commander.” The Vrul acknowledged  floating closer as Adam finally righted himself.
“I am afraid you have me at a bit of a disadvantage…. Who are you?”
The Vrul stopped his orange-red eyes glowing strangely in the blue light, “I am the psychologist.”
“Ah, let me guess, you wanted to see what about a human makes your species so vulnerable to change?”
“Precisely, smarter than your tests suggested.”
Adam frowned, “You know that seems to be a thing with you Vrul. Every time I meet a new one of you, I spend most of my time getting insulted, and yet there isn’t really much I can do, since you guys don’t say anything that isn’t true.”
“And the doctor does not?”
“Not anymore.”
“Why is that.”
Adam, in boredom, began rotating backwards feet thrown up into the air, watching the Vrul as he slowly spun in a circle, “Hmm…. I think…. I think the answer is because we socialized him.”
Spinning back around, the commander would have said that the Vrul seemed surprised. Generally those emotions were easier to read on Krill, but he supposed that was part of the reason why he said what he said.
“That is… an interesting theory, human.”
“Not really a theory. A theory implies that it cannot be tested. I would suggest it’s more a hypothesis.”
The vrul looked at him in a contemplative manner, “Go on, I am interested to hear what you have to say on the subject.”
Adam was a little surprised, “Vrul were kind of known for being stuck up pricks who thought they were smarter than everyone else, but he supposed that this might just help krill out of his current predicament.”
“Well you have talked about the doctor changing a lot, and I have this theory that every one of those changes have to do with his adaptability living in a pack.” The Vrul waited for him to continue, so he did, “You say something about how Krill is more emotional now, right? Well, emotions are adaptable to humans. Aggression allows people to keep their place in the hierarchy. We have trouble listening to krill like we should, so he gets mad at us, as a way to show us  he SHOULD be respected. You might have discussed his use of human facial expressions or body language, well, body language is EXTREMELY important to properly communicating with a human, if he didn’t adopt those habits than he wouldn’t be able to communicate with us effectively. You guys talk about how he moves wrong, well that's part to do with body language and part to do with how quickly humans move. He can’t keep up with us if he floats.”
The psychologist looked Adam over with a critical eye, “Have you been thinking about this?”
Adam shrugged, “Not really, it just makes sense. And I argue that it PROVES that your species is more adaptive than you originally thought. Krill isn’t broken, he has…. Well micro-evolved. I guess.”
The psychologist looked on with interest, “And…. what do you care about him.”
Adam snorted, “Look. Once you make friends with a human, or a group of humans your as good as family, sometimes better than. We have a saying on earth, the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb. It means that the people you choose can sometimes be more important than the people you didn’t. Well we adopted Krill into our pack, he's as good as family to me, and I will do ANYTHING to keep him safe.”
WIth a slight shift of his body, the Vrul floated back.
Adam floated forward, “And when I say ANYTHING, I mean it.”
“But he's not even your species.”
Adam shook his head, “Doesn't matter, the human bonding instinct is so powerful that we routinely bond with inanimate objects. I bought a cactus (a plant) during my time in the airforce academy. I named him melvin, he’s still alive and lives at my parents house. We are great friends. I know a guy who won a stuffed pig at a carnival, and now it goes with him everywhere. My sister always buys the most mangled shaped food because it makes her sad to think that no one will buy it….. She's sad…. For vegetables.”
The Vrul had floated back even further.
“So when I say that we can bond with inanimate objects, imagine how we feel about Krill. Not only my good friend, but our doctor and our surgeon. He saved my life on multiple occasions which also means I owe him a debt of honor like the Drev see honor. I can’t let him go until I repay him, and even then I don’t plan on it.”
“What are you trying to say?”
“I am saying that I WILL get y friend back, no matter what I have to do.”

Top Foot & Ankle Centers Near Greensboro, Georgia
Tumblr media
What time should I see a doctor for foot pain? This is a common question. They are experts at diagnosing and treating problems that don’t seem to have a clear cause. Whether you have foot pain due to plantar fasciitis, shin splints, heel spurs, nerve root abscesses, or oversensitivity, they can help you solve them. A podiatrist might recommend physical therapy and night splints. They may also recommend cortisone injections or MRI imaging depending on the severity of your condition. They can also recommend orthotics. For more information on solving your pain, visit https://davincifootandankle.com.
Do podiatrists treat bunions? A bunion may form depending on the location and shape of your feet. You may not be able to wear comfortable shoes if your bunion is severe. Excessive skin on the feet can push up on the bone, causing pain, pressure, and inflammation. Your doctor will most likely recommend a podiatrist to fix the problem.
Do podiatrists perform surgery? A bunionectomy is one of the most commonly performed surgeries in the United States. If your bunion has been severely damaged, it may be impossible to stand or walk without pain. Crutches may also be required. There are several ways to fix problems with your feet if they are abnormally shaped.
Do podiatrists provide custom orthotics? Most doctors will only prescribe standard orthotics. These allow your feet to move again normally. If your problem is more serious, your podiatric medicine specialist may provide customized orthotics to fix the problem completely.
What is the difference between a podiatrist and an orthopedist? Orthopedists deal with disorders of the musculoskeletal and provide treatment, prevention, and diagnosis. A steroid injection may also be recommended if you have severe plantar fasciitis. Your doctor will also order tests and take X-rays. In many cases, your doctor will recommend surgery.
How do podiatrists treat broken bones? Surgery is the most common method of treating broken bones. They use a surgical hook to pull your bone back into shape. A podiatrist will also use a tool to gradually break down the bone, and then apply traction to help get your foot back in the same place it was before the accident.
Can I have my foot care taken care of by a podiatrist? All of the services offered by a podiatrist can be accessed from your home. You will need to fill in a short form when you visit the doctor’s office for foot treatment. This will help determine if you are eligible for services like prescriptions or x-rays. A podiatrist will visit you once or twice a year to evaluate your condition and then refer you to another doctor for any more specific needs.
How can orthopedic doctors treat ankles that have foot and ankle conditions? Orthopedic surgery is performed to correct problems in the foot that prevents the foot from moving properly. Two of the most popular orthopedic surgical procedures for treating foot and ankle conditions is microdiscectomy surgery. These surgical procedures are not exclusive to orthopedics. Other orthopedic surgical techniques such as plantar fasciitis, corns and calluses, and warts can be performed by these medical professionals as well.
How can podiatrists treat ankles that have foot and ankle conditions or are they able to treat them? One of the most fundamental questions one could ask is "What type of doctor should you see for ankle pain?" There are many possible answers to that question depending upon which orthopedic surgical procedure was used. If the patient does have no sensation in either their ankle or foot, then they will feel pain in that one area. If the patient experiences both pain and the ability to move the leg, a podiatrist expert would evaluate both the patient and recommend a surgical plan based on their medical history.
One of the more common questions about the question of what kind of doctor should I see for foot pain is, "Can a podiatrist help with plantar fasciitis?" This is an orthopedic problem causing inflammation of the plantar fiber, which is the tissue between the bones. Depending on how severe the condition is and how it develops, a podiatrist might recommend physical therapy, prescribe pain medication, or refer the person to an orthopedic surgeon for surgery.
Yes, podiatrists can treat ankles from an orthopedic perspective, but not just any orthopedic physician. They are highly skilled doctors who specialize in the area of health care. This is typically defined as the study of the human body's function. Their job is to assess the patient's situation and determine the best treatment. This requires them to do extensive research on the disease or conditions of the patient, which may include asking the patient questions, examining the body, doing x-rays, and asking other health professionals who are familiar with the illness about their opinion.

Cancer!AU; A look back into Ava’s past
***
“Ma,” Ava rasped, “Chest hurts.”
Her mother glanced at her in the rear view mirror, a pitying look in her eyes, “I know, hartlam.”
Her mother didn’t often call her darling unless she was scared or feeling unwell. It was both this time, since the seven year old happened to be in the middle of yet another debilitating chest pain episode.
The episodes started about six months prior, the first one waking the child from a dead sleep. They would last between minutes to hours, a dull ache deep in her ribcage. She did her best to get through them alone, not the type of child to cry for help when she was injured, but it got worse. Each time she went to the emergency room, the doctors would tell her it’s just growing pains and she would be fine in a few weeks. When those weeks turned to months and their GP was no help, Ava’s mum booked her a paediatrician appointment. In the weeks leading up to the appointment date, Ava discovered a lump under her skin, one that didn’t hurt but was warm to touch. She had cried when she found the thing, about the size of a large orange and placed between two ribs. Her mother was immediately concerned, calling the hospital to bump up her appointment date due to the new occurrence.
They did X-rays and blood work, and said they would call her parents if anything came up. Something must have, because now the family was on their way to Red Cross children’s hospital at 8 PM. Ava just wanted to sleep, she wanted to be in her comfy bed and maybe ask her mum to cuddle until she fell asleep. Her mother’s hugs always helped ease her pain, maybe she would even sing for Ava; that would be nice.
The child couldn’t really remember much of how she got into the conference room in the peds ward. She must have dozed off because she was staring out the window one second and the next she was in her dad’s arms in an unfamiliar room. She protested weakly when he set her down in a chair alone, the plastic was cold and not comfy like his embrace had been. She was breathing shallowly, chest still aching, and she just wanted to go back to sleep.
Her parents and the doctor were talking. They were talking about her, Ava knew that, but she couldn’t focus on their words. She was sitting beside the big window that overlooked the hospital grounds, though it was too dark out to properly see any trees or benches. The stars were bright though, Ava could see them in the clear sky despite the harsh glare of fluorescent lighting on the windowpane. She always loved the stars, how they were little landmarks of space they could see from Earth. Space interested Ava, she had countless books talking about the wonders of the universe. If she looked hard enough, the child thought she could make out Orion’s Belt high up in the sky. Her favourite constellation was Cassiopeia though, she loved the idea of the Queen watching over the world every night.
“Her white blood cell count was abnormally high,” the doctor had a pretty accent, not like anyone from Cape Town Ava had met before. Her tone was soft even as she spoke those words, glancing at Ava in concern.
“What does that mean?”
“It suggests that there is some sort of infection or illness Ava’s body is trying to fight off,” she explained, “Paired with the x-ray results…”
Ava had to stand on her toes to see the film the doctor was holding up. She pointed to a spot on the image with her pen, a big white area that blocked out a large part of what Ava assumed was her chest. They had taken pictures with the big camera weeks before, she didn’t like the heavy apron she had to wear and the machine was scary. Still, she got a sticker after and wore it proudly on her t-shirt that day. She didn’t know what exactly the white spot was but she assumed it was bad, since the doctor looked upset.
“We want to do a biopsy to be sure, but this is almost certainly a tumour.”
That had Ava’s mum crying out, “Cancer?”
“We won’t know for certain until we biopsy the mass but, given Ava’s symptoms and age, it appears to be some type of sarcoma, yes.”
Cancer? Wasn’t that what old people got and passed away from? Ava didn’t understand, there was no way she could have cancer. The doctor must be mistaken, Ava wasn’t old like her auntie who went to Heaven that summer.
“What’s a b...biopsy?”
The kind doctor turned to her with an apologetic gaze, “The surgeons will put you to sleep with a special type of medicine and then do a tiny cut right here,” she shows Ava on her own rib cage, “And take a little piece of your lump. That way we can look at it and see what’s wrong. It's a simple surgery, no big scar.”
That made Ava upset. She didn’t need surgery; surgery was for sick people and Ava wasn’t sick. She just had a painful spot, but she didn’t want them to cut her open. She shook her head fiercely, trying to tell her parents she wasn’t sick.
“Ava,” her father hushed her, “Let the adults talk, okay?”
That made the seven year old fall silent. They must be joking, she was completely fine. She was tired, that's all, hoping they could go home so she could sleep. She wanted her stuffed animals, especially her big shark plushie because she always made Ava feel better. Maybe this was all a bad dream, she could wake up soon for school and the pain would be gone for good.
It was late when they finally got home and Ava immediately ran to her room. She shimmied into her favourite pyjamas and collected her shark from the couch, intending to read before her mum came to put her to bed. Her current favourite book was a popup one about constellations, she really loved seeing the pretty shapes the stars made.
“Ma!” Ava excitedly held up her book as her mother walked into the room, “Did you know stars have already passed away by the time we see them?”
Her mum didn’t answer, instead crossing the room and taking the book from her hands. Ava pouted but was less upset when she picked her up, holding her daughter close as she settled down on the small bed. She snuggled against her happily, hiding her face in her mum’s blonde hair that smelled of her familiar perfume. She always smelled sweet, like flowers and home.
“Mama?”
She shook her head and Ava could tell she was crying, her shoulder shaking slightly and small teardrops landing on Ava’s head. The child tried to pull away so she could look at her face, wanting to wipe away her tears and tell her things were okay. She didn’t know why she was crying, the doctor wasn’t right and Ava was okay.
“Mama, I’m ‘kay,” Ava promised as she wrapped her tiny arms around her neck, “Chest doesn’t hurt now!”
“Ava,” her voice shook with pain and that was enough to make the child want to cry too, “You must be good for the doctors, okay? Let them find out what’s wrong.”
“Nothing’s wrong! I’m okay.”
“Bokkie, no. You’re sick, my love.”
Ava’s lip trembled as she pulled back to look at her mother, searching for any indication of a lie, “No!”
“I’m sorry,” the woman held her daughter close, her heart breaking when she started to cry for the first time. She knew she didn’t understand, not yet. She Couldn’t know the severity of this and didn’t want to believe that she was experiencing anything more than growing pains. It would be hard to accept, especially since it meant countless doctors visits; Ava hated tests and procedures.
“Mama…” Ava sniffled and the fear in her voice was unlike any she had seen in her before, “I’m not old; too little to die!”

I can’t make you do anything, after all I’m just text...)
Chapter Five: I need a Doctor
Tumblr media
“I am the fairy king! Bow to me or you shall die!”
You stare up at the shouting blonde stood atop One’s trailer, the fairy lights you had purchased weeks earlier were now coiled around his body, now no longer producing the beautiful glow they once had. Up until a few minutes ago, the lights had been plugged in and twinkling away merrily, that was until Four had somehow gotten himself tangled up in them. He then decided that the shining bulbs suited his alter ego of ‘Fairy King’ quite nicely and had proceeded to race around base with them on, only pausing for a few moments when he realised, they no longer lit up.
The rest of the team were either asleep, or trying to sleep, you knew for a fact that One was in the latter category, as he had screamed at the top of his lungs “Stop fucking tap dancing on my roof!” The moment Four had begun parading around on the trailer.
You want to tell him to stop, but considering you were the reason he was so highly intoxicated right now, and that you were only one or two drinks away from being on his level of drunk, you find that it really isn’t your place to tell him off. “Oh, powerful fairy king!” You call out, lowering your torso in a sloppy bow, keeping your head tilted up so you can watch Four closely. He was teetering on falling over, which if it weren’t for how close he currently was to the edge of the trailer, then you wouldn’t think anything of it. “Your majesty, perhaps we should move this conversation to more sturdy ground?”
Four wobbles on unsteady legs, his face growing pale as he backs away from the edge of the trailer. For someone who spent most of his time jumping from skyscraper to skyscraper, it was rather comical to see him afraid of what would only be a short drop. “That is an excellent idea my loyal subject, now help me down please!”
You’re not exactly sure how you’re supposed to help Four down, but it likely shouldn’t have gone this way. Skipping over to the bus, a half bottle of Jack Daniel’s sloshing away in your hand, you pause just beneath Four, waving up at him with a cheesy grin, before extending your arms in front of you, with the plan of catching him. Without even so much as a pause, Four leaps off the trailer and into your waiting arms. Anyone who wasn’t currently shitfaced would’ve seen that this was a terrible plan, and that it wouldn’t end the way you both expected. However, being shitfaced as you were, it took you more than a few seconds to comprehend what had happened. One moment you were standing upright, and the next, your entire body had been slammed into the ground bellow, a heavy weight pressing against your front. “Ugh, fuck…” You groan, blinking bleary eyes down at the mass that was slowly crushing you.
Four looks up at you, a lopsided grin brightening up his entire face. “ ‘As anyone ever told you that you’re very comfortable?” He mumbles, speech slurred and slow.
“Can’t say that they have.”
“Well, you are.”
Four lowers his head down, cheek resting against your chest as his eyes flutter closed. You want to protest; this man was five foot eight and made of pure muscle! Yet your aching body began to relax, as you heard tiny snores escape the Brit. As you allowed yourself to drift off, ignoring how you were sleeping on the ground, your mind started to wonder. ‘How had this man, who you had shared no more than five consecutive words with at one time, gone from being the person you avoided at all costs, and now to the person you got piss drunk with, and allowed to fall asleep on you?’
*****
“Briefing room, five minutes!” Seven called behind your closed trailer door, not bothering to knock, knowing full well his voice could be heard clearly through the thin metal that was your trailer. You’d just finished your morning routine of; wake up, drink coffee, go for a run, drink more coffee while you updated yourself on the happenings of the world on your laptop, eat breakfast, have a ten minute internal battle over whether you should go back to bed or not, in that time drink a third cup of coffee, ignore Five’s suggestion of perhaps not ingesting so much caffeine, shower, then return to your trailer while your hair dried and go through the building blueprints One had sent you.
Slowly, you stood up from your bed, stretching your arms above your head after having sat hunched over for too long. You close your laptop, then set about searching for a sweater to throw on over the top of your shirt. Outside, the base was stifling hot, yet for some reason, the briefing room was perpetually freezing. One always insisted on turning on every single fan in the shipping container, and it was just too much! After the third team meeting there, you had vowed never to return without a sweater. Finally, you found the one you were looking for, dark gray with a red #mood splattered across the chest. The sweater itself was perhaps one or two sizes too large, but it was warm and snuggly.
You made your way towards the briefing room, slipping the sweater over your head when you were halfway there. As you pull the material down your torso, you fail to realise that you’d put the garment on backwards, coming to an abrupt halt when you notice that the hood was over your head, completely obscuring your face. Behind you, Four silently leaps from the roof of a shipping container, walking up behind you as you struggle to readjust the sweater. “Oh yeah, you should wear all your clothes like that. Prove to everyone that you’re as stupid as your role in the team is.” He snarls, pushing past you, knocking his side against your shoulder.
You can feel your eyes roll, trailing behind Four as you both head towards the meeting “You know, at first it was kinda intimidating, the whole, ‘you don’t belong here’ schtick. But really, now it’s just sad. You don’t have to feel threatened by me, Luke never felt threatened when he discovered Leia could use the force too! As a Skywalker, you should know better than to allow your emotions to cloud your judgement.” There’s a grin clawing at your lips, which you no longer bother to hide, picking up speed and walking past the scowling blonde. If you had looked back you would’ve seen Four raise his eyebrows in surprise, not having expected you to talk back. Quietly, he was actually rather impressed that you had, even if in doing so you had continued with the Star Wars trend.
*****
“Doctor Genevieve Lushnick, for twenty years she has worked as a general practitioner in a family owned GP clinic, and if she has it her way, will continue doing so until retirement. However, over time, her remedies have become more extreme. She stopped prescribing antibiotics to help fight infections, and instead would recommend her patients undergo unnecessary surgeries.” One begins, displaying images of the Doctor on the screen at the front of the room. Just the sound of her name makes you sick to your stomach, a sweat breaking out on your forehead, though no one seems to notice.
“This is Doctor Gregory Lushnick, Genevieve’s husband. He, is the surgeon who has been performing the procedures, along with a well-paid, and unethical team of doctors and nurses. Genevieve will suggest the surgery, telling the patient that it is a matter of life and death, she will then refer them on to Gregory, who will of course agree with her course of action. The patient, who at this point has been warned if they aren’t operated on soon, they will die, will pay an exuberant fee, any amount the Lushnick’s request, which they then pocket for themselves.”
Three lifts his brows at the information they had all been presented with. “How have they gotten away with this? Surely they’ve had patients who know at least a little bit about general health, who know if a procedure they’ve been recommended is necessary or not?”
One nods, folding his arms across his chest while gazing out over his team, all with an equal expression of shock and disgust. Except for you, who looks on the verge of tears. “That actually happened a few times. A Doctor went and visited Genevieve after hearing about the outrageous number of procedures she had recommended. He went in complaining of an ingrown toenail that had become infected, which he did in fact have at the time, but was treating it himself. Genevieve took one look at it, and informed him that the infection was too far gone, and if they didn’t remove his toe urgently, the infection would likely spread, and perhaps enter his blood stream. He asked for some further testing to ensure Genevieve was correct, to which she obliged, and sent him to pathology to have blood taken.”
“Yeah, but if he got blood tests then that’s it right? Game over? The tests would prove that there’s nothing wrong with ‘im.” Four interjects, leaning his hip against the edge of the table everyone was stood around, taking care to watch you from his peripherals.
“In a normal situation, then yes, you’d be correct. But this isn’t normal, nothing about the Lushnick’s is normal. The test results came back in, and of course, they read perfectly, no deadly infection obviously. But the convenient thing about living in the modern age we do, is that all test results are sent through electronically. All Genevieve had to do, was edit the results, and suddenly, her patient was suffering any ailment she wished! When she presented the results to him, and he played along, saying he would organise the procedure shortly. Instead, he went to the Minister of Health, and presented his findings. The Lushnick’s found out who he was, and what was happening and fled the country. No one knows where they went, so they escaped punishment.”
“Alright, so they fucked off somewhere else, but they’re not hurting anyone, anymore right? So how does this affect us?” Seven shrugged, One’s eyes boring into his.
“I know exactly where the Lushnick’s are. They’ve been performing their surgeries in secret for a few years now, but they’ve moved on to more desperate patients, and are providing more extreme remedies. Rather than patients finding her, Genevieve is seeking out her own patients, the one’s who are unable to afford a visit to the Doctor’s surgery. She’ll play nice, offer them a free consult to ensure they’re all healthy, then she’ll drop the health bomb on them. These people are so afraid, that they will believe anything Genevieve tells them, and will do anything to get the money needed for their life saving surgery.”
Your hand grips the back of a chair, while your other presses flat against the wall nearest you. Your head is swimming, memories flooding back to you in a tidal wave. Heart racing so fast you think it’s about to explode, all the while sweat drips from your skin. No one notices, no one cares. They all have questions that need answering.
Four notices though, how could he not? For weeks now, he had done nothing but watch you closely, always checking to make sure you were safe, and not putting yourself in any unnecessary danger. If you were going to stay with the team, and it looked as if you were, then he would keep an eye on you from a distance. He may not be your friend, but that didn’t mean he cared any less, not really.
“What kind of surgeries are they doing now?” Five asks, her hands resting on her hips.
“Similar to what they used to suggest, only now more extreme because they have a more desperate clientele. From what I could find, the most chilling was what she and Greg did to a fifteen year old boy. He was complaining of shortness of breath, and if he had been seen by any other Doctor, he would’ve been diagnosed with mild asthma, and given an inhaler to use. But Genevieve instead informed him and his father that he had a potentially life-threatening lung infection.” One pauses, a frown creasing his features as he looks over at you, your skin having grown pale and your eyes unfocused, you looked about ready to collapse. He pulls he gaze away for a moment to finish, though his eyes continue to dart back over to you. “The boy underwent surgery to have an entire lung removed. His father paid nearly twenty thousand for his son to have the surgery. Two weeks after the procedure, the boy died.”
A chocked sob rips from your lips, causing everyone to focus on you, six pairs of eyes staring you down. They all either thought you were crazy, or just overly emotional over the death of a kid you didn’t know. How could they know the truth, it’s not as if you had ever told anyone? “Eight? Are you alright?” Five asks slowly, reaching a hand towards you just as you step backwards.
“Hey, sit down for a second kid…” Three offers, gesturing to the chair you had just released from your vice like grip.
“It’s the sweater, she’s probably just over heated.” Four shrugs, though even with his air of indifference, his eyes are clouded with worry.
Another sob followed by your nose sniffling. Were you crying? When had that started? You bring one hand up to your face, your fingers shaking the entire time, until they press against your cheeks, only to pull away a second later damp with tears. Lips are moving, but you don’t hear any of the words that are spoken, there’s a ringing in your ears which is too loud to ignore, and it drowns out everything other than your internal voice. The expressions the Ghosts wore changed from that of curiosity and caution, to full blown panic now as it dawned on them, that you truly weren’t alright. Just as One walks over to you, you spin on your heel, racing away from him and the team. You’re vaguely aware of people calling out after you, but you don’t turn back.
You throw yourself into the gray McLaren which had unofficially become your car, after the driving display you had given a few weeks ago. The engine revs as you try to clear your mind enough to decide on where you were going. Should you be driving in the state you were now? Probably not. Were you going to anyway? Definitely. Were you more than willing to run over Four who now stood between you and the exit you wanted to take? Without a doubt. Pressing the tab on the door, the window lowers at what felt like a comically slow rate.
Four had sprinted after you the moment you left, and was now trying to decide what his next move should be. Behind the car, he could see the others grouped together, all unsure of what to do, just like him. “Either get in the fucking car or move. You have ten seconds or I’m driving through you!” You bark out of the window, providing him with the motivation required for him to spring into action.
The passenger door slams shut, with Four diving in just milliseconds before you slam on the gas, the car fishtailing for a moment, before flying through base. Four stares dead ahead, his mouth slightly agape, while you glare at the road, hands gripping the steering wheel so tight your knuckles had turned white. When you had given Four his options just before, you had never expected him to pick the first, and from the looks of things, neither had he.
Silence fills the speeding car for twenty odd minutes, your eyes locked on the road ahead, while Four was staring out the passenger window, his elbow propped up on the centre console,  while his other hand was resting with his fingers pressed to his lips. You felt as if you were being strangled in the silence, but neither of you were prepared to break it, both too stubborn to admit defeat, and voice your curiosity. Reaching one hand out, your hover above the power button for the stereo, taking your eyes off the road for just a second.
Oh, how things can change in one second.
The car had been travelling in an undisturbed straight line down the freeway, though all of that changed in a heartbeat. With your eyes focused elsewhere, you never saw the massive pothole looming ever closer to the McLaren. Just as you look back at the road, your eyes fall to the dip in the road, something that you should’ve avoided at all costs. Your barely functioning brain kicks in at the last minute, and just as one of your front tyre’s dips into the pothole, you spin the steering wheel, attempting to keep your remaining tyres from hitting the hole too. It was too little too late however, and instead of avoiding the pothole, the car spins out, flying off the edge of the road and skidding along the red dirt uncontrollably.  Your shriek is the first sound to pierce the silence the entire drive, and it seems to be what snapped Four out of his shock.
Four reaches out, taking the wheel in one hand, attempting to straighten out the cars path, while his other hand wraps around the handbrake, pulling it up with all his might. The McLaren spins for another few seconds, until coming to a halt, a cloud of dust having been kicked up by the erratic tyres. “Jesus Christ Eight! What the fuck was that about?”
You can’t answer him, your words are choked in your throat, and refuse to budge. You unclip your seatbelt and bolt out of the car, leaving the keys in the ignition as you sprint away from both the car and Four. Why was he here? Out of everyone that could’ve blocked your path and jumped into the car, why did it have to be fucking Four? He didn’t give a shit what was going on with you on a regular day to day basis, so why the hell would he care about this?
Where were you even running to? You were in the middle of nowhere, and all that was around you was desert and the highway. There was nowhere for you to run to. As this realisation hits you, you stop dead in your tracks. Heart pounding in your chest. Clenching your fists at your sides, your drop to your knees in the middle of the desert, titling your head back, and screaming gutturally towards the sky, as fresh tears flow freely down your cheeks now.
*****
Four had never seen someone lose control as you were doing now, he’d seen his fair share of people in pain, screaming and crying over the death of a loved one or because they were in pain. But this, it felt different to him. Watching you collapse to your knees, he felt his chest tighten, and his own breath hitched in his throat. Your scream rumbled through his entire body, and echoed around the empty sky, there was nothing around for miles that would block your screams. He didn’t know what else to do, so he grabbed the keys, pocketed them before jogging over to you.
“Hey… Hey, it’s okay – You’re gonna be okay.” He whispers, kneeling beside you now, wrapping his arms around your shaking torso. He was sure that if it weren’t for the vulnerable position you found yourself in, that you would never return his embrace as you now were. But you did, your arms circling around his neck, as you pressed your face against his shoulder.
“Any other target… It could’ve been anyone else.” You cry out, hot tears splashing against his thin t-shirt. Four tightens his grip around you, slowly lowering himself into a sitting position, and guiding you down with him. You follow him down, and he half expects you to break out of your emotions when he settles you against his lap, though that never happens.
He rubs soothing circles against your back, listening for the sounds of your cries to ease, before he finally asks. “What d’you mean Eight? What’s wrong with the target?”
You shake your head, pressing further into his shoulder, as another body shaking sob overtakes you. Your mind is swimming in horrifying memories, and all you want to do is to claw them out of your brain. You want to forget; you need to forget. “Eight, look at me… Talk to me.”
Four rests his hands on both of your shoulders,  gently guiding you away from him so he could look you in the eyes red rimmed and now puffy, though your tears had slowed at the very least. “Hey – Hi…”
*****
You blink across at Four, sniffling as you attempt to clear your thoughts. Why did he suddenly care what was wrong with you? For weeks now, he barely spoke a word to you, when he did, it was always something snarky or sarcastic. There was never any care for your wellbeing, so where had this all come from? “Hullo… I’m sorry. Please, just forget about that. I’m sorry.”
You move to pull away from Four, but his large hands on your shoulders tighten their grip, and you honestly just don’t have the energy to fight against him. “I’m not going to forget about this. Talk to me Eight, what happened back there?”
“What happened? I lost control of the car, it spun out. Happens to the best of us.” You shrug, opting to play dumb for a little while, just to see how far you would get with doing so.
There’s a fierce glare that settles over Four’s eyes, and you can feel a physical chill run down your spine at the intensity of his gaze.
“Don’t. Don’t you dare do that.”
“Do what?”
“Pretend to be stupid. We both know you’re the furthest from stupid a person could possibly get.” Four breathes out deeply, closing his eyes for a moment, before opening them and reconnecting his sight with yours.
You’re not sure which is more likely to occur first, your heart stopping entirely or for it to literally explode under the amount of stress you’re experiencing right now. “It’s the Lushnick’s. I – I know them. Or at least, I did know them.”
Four stills his movements, where he had been drawing tiny patterns against your shoulders, he no longer seems able to do even that. “What do you mean you know the Lushnick’s?” His voice comes out strangled, and if you didn’t know any better, you would think he was worried about you.
“Doctor Genevieve, the clinic she worked in was local to my family when I was little. When I was around five, I had a babysitter, Kellie, she would look after me every afternoon after school, and some weekends. She would’ve been around seventeen, and at the time was my best friend. I didn’t get along with the kids in my class, so I turned to Kellie, she was always there for me, and I loved her like a sister.” There, that was the easy part to talk about. You could just leave the story there, but really, you know you couldn’t do that. You had given away too much to stop now. “Every afternoon, she would walk me home from school. On the walk, we would pass by the clinic where Doctor Lushnick worked. One afternoon, when we were heading home, Kellie started to feel dizzy, I remember she was struggling to walk, and I was worried. I left her on a bench, and ran to the Doctor’s clinic. The receptionist grabbed the first doctor she could find, Genevieve, and we all ran to Kellie to help her.”
“Fuck Eight, I’m sorry –“
You cut Four off before he can say anymore. “Let me finish. There’s more to tell, and I can’t stop now.” You pause for a moment, waiting to see if he had anything else to say, but clearly he thought better than to speak up again. “Doctor Lushnick performed heaps of tests, I remember she kept sending Kellie for more and more blood tests, x-rays and ultrasounds. Always telling her and her family that the results had come back inconclusive. It must’ve been around two weeks, until Kellie was given her diagnosis. Heart failure. I don’t remember much of what happened after that, there was a lot of adult conversations had that I wasn’t made a part of. What I do know though, is that Genevieve sent Kellie to have a heart transplant. Kellie was terrified, I can still hear her crying, begging her parents not to make her go through with the surgery. Her parents didn’t want her to have it done either, but Genevieve and Gregory made it sound as if it were her only option. They told Kellie and her parents that without the surgery, she would die.”
Tears had returned to your eyes now, and Four pulled you subtly closer to him, not enough so you were embraced as you were before, but enough that you could feel his warmth soaking into you, and hear his steady heartbeat. “Kellie had the surgery, and was recovering relatively well.  She was in the hospital still so the nurses could keep an eye on her while she healed. After school one day, I lied and told my parents I was going to a friend’s house, and that no one needed to pick me up until later. Instead I went to the hospital to visit Kellie. I had gone to see her twice after the surgery, and both times she had seemed alright, at least in my eyes she did. This third time though, when I got to her room, everything was different. She was pale and sweating, her chest heaving as she gasped for breath. There was no one else in the room for me to get, so I pressed the call button from the side of her bed, and in came running nurses and doctors.  No one really explained to me what had happened that day until I was older. And it wasn’t until I was much older, did I realise truly what had happened, and with the information One gave us today, I knew for sure. Kellie was never supposed to have had that surgery, her body underwent unnecessary trauma, which it couldn’t heal from. Doctor Genevieve and Gregory Lushnick murdered my best friend.”
Suddenly, you were pressed against Four’s chest, as your felt tears stream over your cheeks. He held you firmly, his warm embrace was one of comfort and peace, two things you had never associated with the man. “When One was telling us about what they had done to others, I just couldn’t stop the memories from coming back, everything I felt back then, it all came rushing back to me.”
“It’s alright, fuck Eight. I’m sorry, I am so sorry. I wish there was more I could say..”
You gulp, before looking up at him, your eyes scanning over his handsomely chiselled face for the very first time. In the time you had been with the team, not once had you had the opportunity to look at Four up close, and of course this would be your first chance. While sitting on his lap, crying your heart out, as you both grew more covered in dust. “Promise me we’ll make them pay. Promise me that we’ll get them both, and that they won’t get away.”
Four allows a deep breath to flow from his parted lips, the lines on his forehead smoothing as he takes in your words. “I promise you, they won’t make it through this alive.”
*****
Allowing Four to drive you both back to base had likely been one of the best decisions you had made in a long time. Despite the panic and anger which had clouded you before, now faded to a dull shadow, you were still shaky, and your concentration was easily lost. Four driving truly was the safest option, if you both wanted to arrive home in one piece. “Can we stop in town?”
Four glances at you for a moment, retracting his hand which was resting on your knee. The entire drive, you would find Four resting his hand somewhere on your leg. To you, it was grounding and comforting, serving to remind you that you weren’t alone. It let you know that someone else on the team understood your connection to the targets. For Four however, you weren’t sure if he was doing it out of habit, or for comfort too. “Sure, what do you need?”
Turning to look at his side glance, you allow a tiny smile to tug at the corners of your lips. “I desperately need a drink. You’re welcome to join me if you’d like, but I’m sure you’d rather forget that this all happened.” You shrug softly, before turning to look back out of the passenger window.
Four’s eyes grow wide at your comment, and he finds himself at a loss for words. “I- You- What?”
Pressing your forehead against the window, you take a deep breath in, before blowing out through your mouth, fogging the glass up in the process. “I appreciate you following me out here today, I really do. But, let’s be honest, we’re not friends. You hate me. You’ve made that perfectly clear since the day I arrived. So, while I’m happy to extend the invitation of getting piss drunk with me, I’m not expecting you to accept.”
“I don’t.”
“You don’t what?”
“Hate you… I’m sca – Way too sober to have this conversation right now. But put it this way, I don’t hate you.”
Four focuses back on the road, while his words swirl through your mind. ‘Scared? Was he about to say he was scared? Scared of what though? He always seemed so grounded, almost as if nothing could touch him, let alone hurt him…’ On the drive away from base, you hadn’t paid any attention to where you were headed, not really. All you knew at the time, was that you needed to get as far away from everyone as was humanly possible. Which is why it came as a surprise to you when Four pulled into a small town, not the one you had visited with Two and Five a few weeks ago, but an entirely different one which you had never known to exist. “There’s a liquor store just up that side street there.” Four observes, while pointing to the left of the town, where sure enough, there was an opening in the path for the side street.
You nod, climbing out of the car, just as Four lowers his window and the passenger side window. “I’ll be back in a few. Want anything?”
Four shakes his, carding his fingers through is windswept curls. “Thanks, I’m good.” It’s said with such a firm edge to the words, that you know the conversation is over, before it really began.
As you walk down the street, you look back over your shoulder at Four and the McLaren. His wrists are wresting on top of the steering wheel, as he picks at his nails, clearing them of the dirt that had gathered there from earlier. Music was pumping through the speakers, and you could see the car shaking with the intensity of the bass Turning the corner, the liquor store comes into view, a small bell chiming as the door pushes open. A man, likely in his forties or fifties is stood near the cooler section, collapsing empty beer boxes.  Looking at the few shelves that lined the wall nearest the register, you feel a lump rise in your throat. In your haste to leave base, you hadn’t brought anything with you,  no phone, no wallet, no money!
“Can I help you with anything?” The man calls from the opposite side of the store, eyeing you suspiciously.
“Just looking thank you!”
The man squints at you, his eyebrows furrowed. “Hope you’ve got some ID kid…. You don’t look old enough to be buying anything from here…”
Your jaw drops at his words, a scowl marching across your features. How dare he question your age, suggesting you weren’t old enough to drink! You had never been ID’d before now, and now that you were not only dead, and still waiting on One to present you with your fake ID’s. But you didn’t even have your bloody wallet with you, where said fake would be kept, this was the time, of all times where the world decided to turn against you and start questioning your age? “Of course I have ID with me.”
The man watches you for another moment, as if assessing whether he could trust you or not. With a final huff, he bends over and picks up a box of beers, pushing the cooler door open and heading inside to restock the fridge shelves, clearly having decided you were trustworthy. Oh buddy, wrong decision.
Maybe it was because of the shithouse afternoon you had just experienced, or maybe it was because you were sick and tired of people making assumptions about you. No matter the why’s, you found yourself snatching bottles of Jack Daniel’s, Malibu, and salted caramel vodka. Without a second thought, you cradled them against your chest, then bolted for the front door.
“Get back here you thief!” The man screams after you, having re-emerged from the fridge just as the door swung closed behind you.
This was wrong, so fucking wrong! It was one thing to steal money from a stranger’s bank account (Granted that stranger then went on to fake your death, and now was your employer…) Or to work from afar and have people do the dirty work, while you reaped the benefits, they did the snatching and grabbing, you just made sure they didn’t get caught. But this? This was you stealing, with no one else there! This was all you!
Your feet pound against the pavement, the McLaren coming into view just as the store clerk sprints after you. “Open the fucking door Four!” You shriek from the top of your lungs, praying to any deity who may listen that he will hear you over the pumping music.
Despite your thieving tendencies, someone answers your prayer, and Four looks up and over to you through the open passenger window, his eyebrows shooting up into his hair line as he spots you sprinting at full speed towards him, three bottles clutched in your arms, as a pissed man follows close behind. He leans across the centre console, pushing the door open before returning to his seat fully and twisting the key in the ignition. With the sound of the door slamming shut behind you, he throws the car into reverse, getting you both the hell out of town! “What the actual fuck Eight? What did you do?”
You stare down at the three bottles, now laying by your feet, rocking back and forth as the car moves. Laughter bubbles from your chest, and you can’t help the burst of chuckles that rip through you. “I didn’t have any money…”
For a brief moment, you could’ve sworn you saw Four grin, though the look is soon replaced by a sigh. “And you didn’t think to come and ask me if I had any?”
“Do you have money on you?”
“No… But that’s not the point! Your first instinct was to steal what you wanted!”
“Are you seriously telling me off for stealing? Sorry, last I heard, One met you after a robbery gone wrong.”
Four’s grip on the wheel tightens for a few moments, before his knuckles relax somewhat, tension visibly leaving his shoulders. “Now we’ve gotta find a new liquor store.”
*****
Walking through base, you felt everyone’s eyes on you, all boring down on you, as if thinking if they stared long enough then they would understand what had happened to you. There’s a part of you that wants to explain yourself, and to reassure the team that you are in fact, not insane as they may now think. However, before you even have the chance to consider explaining yourself, Four is dragging you by the hand towards your trailer. “If anyone needs us, don’t. Just don’t fucking need us!” He calls out behind you, gripping the bottle of Malibu with such intensity your genuinely worried he might smash the glass.
Four’s warning seemed to have worked, at least for the time being, and you watched as the Ghosts all shuffled away, back to whatever they had been doing before your arrival. One stays out for a few moments longer, arms folded across his chest, and both eyebrows raised in confusion. You can see the questions he’s dying to ask dancing across his eyes, mixed with a look of what could only be described as, understanding. You don’t take the time to dwell on One, as you’re far too preoccupied with Four who had swung your trailer door open, and was pushing you inside and up the steps, his hands pushing against your lower back to keep you moving.
Four followed you up, placing the Malibu on the small table opposite your bed, while you plonked down on the bed, the bottles of Jack and vodka falling to the foot of your mattress. “Right, you stay here as long as you need to. Drink, get smashed, scream, cry. Whatever you wanna do.” His broad shoulders shrug, as he turns away from you, and steps back towards the door, resting both hands in his front pants pockets.
Quickly, you twist off the cap of the vodka, the strong scent of salted caramel filling the air. “The offer still stands. Only this time, I’d like you to join me…”
Four turns on the spot, looking back at you in surprise. “You sure?”
“Yes, I – I want you here with me please.”
There’s no need to ask him a second time, though you would’ve if necessary. Four reaches out and takes the vodka from your outstretched hand, bringing it to his lips and taking a deep swig. Just as you do the same with the Jack. “Cheers to your first mission briefing.” He chuckles, his crystalline eyes sparkling in joy.
You roll your eyes up at him, as you move further back on the bed, leaning your back against the wall. “Let’s try not to make this a tradition yeah?”
“It’s been five seconds, and you already hate drinking with me enough to never want to do it again?”
“That’s not what I meant. The drinking, I’d be willing for the to be a tradition.  The whole, me running away from base thing though? Yeah, let’s not do that again.”
Four nods, his curls swaying under the gesture, before he takes another swig, savouring the sharp after burn the vodka left in the back of his throat.  You crawl up off the bed, and shuffle over to the small, mint green radio that was set up towards the back of the trailer, fiddling with the dials before it decided to pick up something other than static. “I won’t let that happen again… You won’t be hurt like that again.” Four breathes out, though the words are drowned out by the functioning radio.
“Fuck! I love this song!” You squeal, turning the volume up to full, dancing to the blasting music.
“Seriously, Kesha? Out of all the music you could love, it’s this?”
“Don’t be an ass. This is my trailer, and my booze, I can and will kick you out if you’re not careful!”
“It’s stolen booze, so technically, the shop still owns it, not you….”
You don’t really think about your next move, all you know is that one moment you were drinking from the bottle of Jack while dancing and being sassed at by Four, and the next, you had grabbed one of your multiple decorative pillows, and had begun attacking him with it. Four grabbed his own pillow, and retaliated in kind, swatting you left right and centre, all the while attempting to not spill either of your drinks. And thus started the great pillow war of 2020.
*****
You don’t know what time it is, there’s a gentle stream of light washing over you as you carefully peel your eyes open, though a set of curtains over the window make it impossible for you to see anything else, other than the suns rays. Lifting your arms above your head, you stretch your aching body, before finally giving in and opening your eyes fully. It takes far too long for you to realise something was wrong. This was not where you had fallen asleep, quite the opposite actually. You know for a fact you had fallen asleep outside, in the dirt no less, with Four using you as a pillow. Yet somehow, you were now alone, in a strangers bed, inside a strangers trailer….
You sit bolt upright, your stomach instantly churning at your sudden movements, you blanch at the taste of bile as it rises in your throat, swallowing it back down. Slowly, you look around the trailer, finding nothing familiar in the small space. “Four?” It had to be his home… You had been inside everyone else’s trailer, but never his.  With a great deal of care, you pull yourself off the bed, pressing a hand over your eyes for a moment, as you feel a wave of dizziness wash over you. “Four? Hello?”
Looking around, you find no trace of him, or at least nothing that pointed to his whereabouts. You pass by a mirror as you walk towards the door, and you take a moment to assess your reflection. Your hair was knotted, sweaty, and had flecks of dirt tangled in it, there were deep set bags under your eyes, and overall you looked, and felt like death. Though all that combined, you still felt better now, than you had yesterday during the briefing.
You allow the trailer door to swing shut behind you, spotting a determined looking Two, marching across base and headed to the rec room. Was there another meeting this morning? Had you slept through the announcement, and Four couldn’t be bothered to wake you up? There was no time to think over the millions of possibilities as to what had happened, all you know, was that if Two was storming off somewhere, it was likely the best course of action would be to follow her.

The First Ultrasound Test During Pregnancy
Being pregnant is a beautiful feeling for every woman. For every parent, there is a sense of eagerness to know how your baby will look like and, more importantly, how is your baby developing inside the womb. So, the initial glance of the baby through ultrasound is unforgettable for every parent-to-be.
Your first prenatal ultrasound helps to get an early peek inside the womb and gives the chance to know about the baby's expected due date, well-being. Other than the visual evidence of the baby, ultrasounds are used as the essential diagnostic tool for helping to get the record of the fetus's movement, heartbeat, breathing, and the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding your baby.
Read this blog further to know the important information about the baby's first ultrasound
What Is An Ultrasound?
Tumblr media
An ultrasound is a painless diagnostic test done for most women during pregnancy. For the ultrasound, a transducer (or wand) is placed in the vagina or on the top of the belly. It produces the sound waves that bounce off the baby's fluids, tissues, and bones.
After this, the transducer picks up these echoes and decodes them into the black and white pictures on a monitor screen. The images that you get to see on the screen are the baby's soft tissues and organs.
During early pregnancies, ultrasounds are used to confirm the fetal heartbeat and the baby's position in your uterus. Moreover, the ultrasounds done in the later pregnancy are for the screening of the fetal growth, placenta location, and baby's general health and structure.
And towards the end of pregnancy, ultrasounds are done to check the length of the cervix and verify that the baby is in the right head-down position before labor.
When Should You Get Your First Ultrasound Test During Pregnancy?
The doctors suggest scheduling your first ultrasound test when you are around 6 to 8 weeks pregnant. Your first ultrasound is called a baby sonogram, and the main purpose of doing this is to confirm pregnancy date to get the accurate due date.
An early pregnancy ultrasound test is conducted transvaginal for obtaining a clearer picture of your baby. During this ultrasound, you can also see the baby's heartbeat, due date, track milestones, check whether there is one or more than one fetus, and test whether you have an ectopic pregnancy.
Different Kinds Of Ultrasound Procedures
There are two kinds of ultrasound procedures including –
Transabdominal Ultrasound – During a transabdominal ultrasound, you     have to lie down on an examination bed. The gel is applied to your abdomen     to form better contact between your skin and the scanner. Then, the     sonographer uses the traditional transducer across the abdomen in various     positions by applying some gentle pressure to get the image of the baby on     the screen. This ultrasound can be used for monitoring the ovaries,     cervix, and bladder of a pregnant woman.
2D Transvaginal Ultrasound – If you are going for your first     pregnancy ultrasound around the 6th or 7th week, your doctor might perform     the transvaginal ultrasound. This procedure gives more accurate     measurements and the heartbeats of the baby in the early 1st trimester.     You can also use this ultrasound in your later pregnancy to locate your     placenta if it's over the cervix or to measure the length of the cervix.     During the transvaginal ultrasound, a wand-shaped transducer covered with     a latex sheath (sterile condom-like cover) is inserted into the vagina to     get a look at the uterus from a closer angle. The device is being moved in     the vagina to form the pictures on the ultrasound screen.

How To Prepare For The Pregnancy Ultrasound Tests?
You must go for your ultrasound test with a full bladder. It makes it easier for the doctor or the sonographer to get the results through your bladder. In addition, a full bladder helps elevate the intestines and gives a clearer picture of your pelvic organs. Drink as much water as you can about an hour before the appointment. You can also eat an hour before your appointment, especially the sugary items. It makes the baby move around and helps in getting clearer images.
