dude monolingual english speakers don't know what they're missing out on, i started watching qsmp and my entire world opened up. i started understanding when people talked in portuguese and spanish and french around me, i started connecting languages, i became a better person, i deadass just feel like i got smarter, my crops were watered, skin was cleared etc etc. i'm so extremely serious, i understand if you don't want to get into qsmp especially after all that shit, but you all need to get into something that's not in your native language especially if you only speak english. like start looking for popular spanish-speaking youtubers or something. expand your worldview. get bilingual. become cooler.
#local anon learns that connecting to the world around them is good Actually head exploding emoji#sorry idk why im hating im a history major bc i love connecting to the world around me i am made of memories afterall#confession#smp: qsmp

So much of the talk about voting/not voting this year is about the presidential election, and at this point, I know I don't have anything to say that could change anyone's mind. However, PLEASE vote down ballot and do your research on every one of those votes.
If you, like me, live in a place where you have 3 pages of just judges to vote on, I know that seems daunting to look into, but there's also probably several lawyer groups who have assessed the judges' qualifications and behavior. If you're in a big enough city/county, there's probably even a group dedicated just to gathering those ratings and tracking reversals of rulings, controversial rulings, etc.
Not only could those judges be someone you have to stand in front of someday, so you want to be sure they're unbiased and good at their job, but you also might find out some interesting things. Mostly about corruption or bigotries, but if you're lucky like me, maybe one of the most respected judges in your county is also a successful mystery novelist and now you have that as a fun fact
#election 2024#vote#even though i found a website that compiled all the judges histories in the order they appear on the ballot#it still took me 2 hours to read all of that and make my decisions#but i learned a lot of interesting things about my local judges

besides legends arceus causing the whole "oh riley is actually really old (and at one point went by rye)" braincell it also led to other Fun Ideas about ancestry and dealing with who people expect you to be contrasting with who you really are :) especially with marley's japanese name (mai) becoming the english name for her ancestor and thus joining rye in being the stat trainer ancestors who share the same name origin as their present-day descendants/selves :) :) (also they were specifically made a team in the BDSP battle tower which might not mean much but i'm thinking about it now anyway)
#pokemon#stat trainer riley#riley pokemon#stat trainer marley#marley pokemon#blood curse of sir aaron#i didn't go into this series-thing with the idea of marley and riley having some very similar experiences but here we are now!#(also coloring with the spray can is really fun. might be doing more doodles like this in the future idk)#as for the other stat trainers! cheryl got clairvoyance from sabi but hasn't really been in the diamond clan for a while now#buck is well aware of the legacy captain zisu left behind and how big shoes those are to fill (but being a local god's favorite helps)#mira has no idea about pesselle until riley (and/or v) brings her up. she doesn't know a lot about her family history so it's nice to learn#i dunno how much i'm gonna get into Riley and Marley in the main course of events but boy oh boy will i still be writing about them#(and the other stat trainers of course. can't forget they're a whole team!)#willowarts

The further I go on this outline the more I come to realize that Lillian would, just, not suffer Fordola. Or Yotsuyu. In fact, she'd be up there with Hien champing at the bit to see them hang; except she couldn't be persuaded by Gosetsu to let them live - to let them atone - and would openly criticize Hien for changing his mind.
#local warrior high off three expansions worth of victories and the euphoria of self-acceptance aquires a new personality trait - arrogance#and the events of Castrum Fluminus only fuel that for expansions to come#i gotta add weight to her freeing Fordola from the execution collar during Endwalker and allowing her return to Gyr Abania#after all Lillian's recounting to Venat and learning from her history to reflect on the person she's willingly become

I don’t know if this is what you are looking for exactly, but I enjoy writing for Postcards to Voters because they focus on non-presidential races. I am currently writing postcards against an anti-choice constitutional amendment proposition in Ohio.
I wish more people would do things like that, instead of making posts that guilt trip people for not being excited enough about voting for the Blue sexual harasser instead of the Red one.
Thank you for your highly sensible response.
I guess there's a thing where "just because someone takes 15 seconds to shoot their mouth off online about something that's annoying them doesn't mean they have the time/energy to do anything actually constructive, even more so for the people who took .5 seconds to hit reblog now on someone else's shooting their mouth of post" but I think it would be strictly better for people to spend that .5 second exerting a smidgen of self control and going "either it's actual GOTV or it's not, and if it's not I'm going to not reblog it."
And as the election is over a year away...I don't think "vote blue no matter who" is actually a Get Out The Vote action at this point in time. It's annoying enough when people do it in person but at least then there's occasionally some chance of having a reasonable discussion about it, but on social media between people who don't really know each other? Ha snowball's chance in hell.
(I haven't done Postcards to Voters the last couple years, but I did around 2019-2020 or so and they are fairly low barrier to entry as long as you have stamp money, super introvert friendly, you can be as creative or non-creative as you want to be, and as you can do it from your home on your own schedule pretty darn spoonie friendly as well. As well as covid-safe. And yes, there's a big focus on local/state campaigns, which warms my participatory democracy loving little heart.) (ughh sounds like an important campaign maybe I should pick this thing up again.)
#I did big posts arguing about this in 2000 but I felt crummy afterwards so I'd really rather not rehash all that#it's theoretically and pragmatically wrong on multiple levels#this is the internet you don't get unity#you get two splinter groups arguing the two most extreme ends of the position possible each side convinced that they are 100% right#someone who's a little bit in favor of voting blue no matter who will get downright dogmatic about it#someone who's a little bit against will end up surrounded by anarchists who think voting is a waste of time#which wouldn't be the worst outcome ever#except that as far as I can tell most of the most vocal anarchists on tumblr don't do shit except tear down democratic politicians#like ok glad you think you're right I don't want to have anything to do with you though#there's like 2-3 anarchist posters on here who actually talk about direct action and organizing and stuff -- about things people can do#I guess with the abundance of time freed up by not spending a couple hours doing research and half an hour filling out a ballot#or much much less time than that if they're voting just for the president#yup congrats you sure saved a lot of time there now you have more time to convince other people to not vote either AWESOME GOOD JOB (sarcas#on an unrelated note I really need to work on a following the local news habit#and finding some way to learn more about oakland's history since I live here now#and I know how annoying it can be when someone's trying to be active in local politics but is missing highly important context

Most interesting fact you know?
these 5 words have me a Lot more stressed than they should Wow- (it’s like all my obscure knowledge goes away when i’m asked)
I gotta make sure I give y’all a good one soooooo
tbh idk here’s one abt my almost hometown that I think is cool though.
in mobile, al there used to be (as in around the time of the founding-early 1700s) these gangs that were basically the unofficial government. like they were lowkey the mafia and what they said went so the Actual gov (or whatever colonial equivalent they had at the time) just had to listen to them otherwise they risked facing their wrath themselves.
however these guys (i think i remember this right…) were actually not that bad! like, as usual, the government Sucked (partially bc it was like. legit incomplete) and if they even Had a police force, as per usual, they also sucked… so. enter These Guys! they would actually track down criminals who were let off and kill/torture/punish/Whatever them instead!
so people were like scared of them but because they were basically the only ones solving legit problems,, they were also respected.
best part, some of them were called the Buckets of Blood (which is a Sick name) and as more time passed and mobile became more developed, these gangs actually deviated and formed what became some of the earliest mardi gras orders and associations! (there was some other Actual History that happened in between this and that but. i don’t remember that much)
anyway that’s probably a lot more than you wanted but. there’s a Fact. :)
#this may not be entirely true#bc i technically learned this like 6 years ago#from a tour i used to take a LOT#but basically something along those lines is what happened#if y’all want more of my local history lmk i know a lot of it lol/hj#thanks for asking though!!#mobile alabama#local history#asks!

I wanted to write some extra extra horrible Armand/Daniel book/series blend fanfic to test if I could write erotic horror basically, but was hit by a writer’s block. So I’m instead trying to figure out what it would actually have been like to be a, what? 20? year old American journalist in the USA in 1973.
The Vietnam conscription only ended in January 1973! This seems like something that would have influenced Daniel even if ‘a full-time student making satisfactory progress toward a degree’ he might get a deferment by studying (wiki). Protests against the war were everywhere. An aspiring journalist would likely have reported on them, maybe participated in some way.
an event right there in San Francisco in 1972 (shortly before the interview) ‘October 14. The "Peace March to End the Vietnam War" was held in San Francisco. This "silent-march" demonstration began at City Hall and moved down Fulton Street to Golden Gate Park, where speeches were given. Over 2,000 were in attendance.’ (wiki)
1972 is also the year of the first reports on what would become the Watergate scandal. Mildly relevant to a young journalist perhaps?
of course the 70s also featured a lot of gonzo journalism, and the kind of young journalist who visits bars to record people’s stories and score drugs might be a Hunter Thompson fan? It happened to me: I tried writing a Anne Rice horror fic and instead convinced myself to read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. 😔
Dick Leitsch’s Guide to Seventies Gay Slang seems useful. gay bar setting anyone.
still stuck :(
#RIP! local tumblr user tries writing for fun and instead learns about US history#i am european and i was not alive at the time. ok.
