riz is the child of sklonda who is dating gorthalax who is the father of fig whose mom is sandra lynn who is dating jawbone who adopted adaine (and aelwyn by extension i guess) and also jawbone's daughter's ex-girlfriend who lives with him is kristen and also fig's other dad gilear is dating hallariel whose son is fabian. and then there's gorgug, who i'm sure thanks various sundry gods every day that neither his adopted nor his biological parents have any relation to any of his classmates

If you have time, I'd be really interested to hear any thoughts you have about the Bad Kids in terms of party/combat mechanics! I know they have a number of homebrew abilities/items that make them a little different from RAW character builds, but what do you think about them in terms of party balance or combat effectiveness? The thing that usually leaps out to me is how many of the Bad Kids are able to buff each other in and out of combat, and they seem to work fairly cohesively in battle. What's your read on them?

I don't have a ton of thoughts - in general, assume my CR thoughts will always be much more involved in part just because I'm more involved and also the ease of looking up information for CR works - but what does interest me actually is that the Bad Kids started off a pretty standard split of three casters (all competent support casters but capable of damage) and three martial classes, and that everyone but Adaine has undergone a subclass change, a multiclass, or more, and nearly all those changes were in the direction of higher utility and support. Adaine meanwhile was always a divination wizard which is simply a fantastic class and subclass with high utility and cool abilities so there's no need to change:

Fabian was originally a champion fighter, which is a great subclass but not really focused on party support other than being extremely good at killing foes and a decent tank. During season 2 he switched to battlemaster and multiclassed into bard (college of swords). His focus is still primarily on damage, but he can now maneuver and aid allies with his fighter abilities rather than just being super good at hitting, and he has the spells and inspiration of a bard, arguably the class most defined as a support/utility class.

Gorgug was originally a pure barbarian, and branched off into artificer late in season 2. It's a weird multiclass and one that Brennan has worked with Zac to homebrew but it did make a lot of narrative sense for him, and he then put the work in this past season. Artificers are also a good support class, whereas barbarians (especially Beserker, which he originally was) are also all about tanking and damage. By multiclassing into battlesmith he adds familiars onto the field, and maintains taking abilities.

Fig was originally college of whispers, which kind of sucks as a bard subclass, and so switching to lore, which gives you more access to spells and ways to help your allies helped. She also addressed the lack of bard ability to do damage by taking first a level in hexblade, and then multiclassing into paladin. She can still serve as support, and frequently does via inspiration and healing, but she now has pretty much all options available to her.

Kristen was originally a life cleric and is now twilight, and honestly both are super strong but twilight has a wider array of powers whereas life is very strongly healing-focused. Clerics also just get exponentially stronger as they level up and get higher level spells.

And finally, Riz switched from inquisitive, which is a solid rogue class in terms of solving mysteries, to arcane trickster, which gives him access to spells, dramatically expanding his repertoire. Also, to be honest, rogue abilities at high levels are really good, it's just, you spend a lot of time in levels where all you get is sneak attack.

So: all the martials ended up with some amount of spellcasting, the most pure support caster took some wise martial dips, and clerics and wizards are just really good classes that get better as you get more powers. You end up with a party that, as you say, can all buff each other.

okay ive talked about this with a few people but i totally think season 3 will have a siblings motif. we already know a few characters who are NOT only children (fabian, ayda) which hasn’t been explored, and have some characters who also have the potential to not be only children (they called fig ‘first born daughter’ in hell?? weird choice of wording for an only child) (also either set of gorgug’s parents could have more kids - adopted or bio). and i’d just really like to see more of kristen’s brothers and OF COURSE adaine and aelwyn. riz just has such strong only child vibes im sorry i dont see that changing

i REALLY HOPE we meet fabian’s siblings but my PERSONAL headcanon for them is that he has an older sister who is like. SUPER COOL and badass and can kick his ass in a second flat and literally everyone is in love with her. and also an older brother who lives in bastion city who is a completely normal and extremely boring accountant

so adaine definitely has the potential to be a very physical person (like even early early s1 she’s throwing spells, punching, The Ladle) but obviously was raised in an environment where she was expected to be very self contained. i think as she gets used to mordred manor and living with jawbone and tracker and ragh especially, she gets VERY about physical affection. like, okay, one, the child is touch starved we all know this. but i think she goes from awkward fistbumps and pats on the shoulder to like. BIG bear hugs, hair ruffling, people sitting on her lap, etc etc pretty quickly. like just embracing that physicality she has in a positive way

also jawbone and tracker (in a safe way, we know they take measures to not spread lycanthropy) totally bite as affection. and adaine picks up on it and one day just sort of chomps aelwyn’s arm a little bit and aelwyn is like. hey. so what the hell was that. and adaine was like it was affection it means i love you. and aelwyn is just like. literally what the fuck is up with this house.

ALL the bad kids have trauma For Sure but (as i hinted at in the first fic) fabian definitely has ptsd from leviathan. i think his presents as less emotional stuff and more as like. a ton of hypervigilance and irritability/snappishness when he’s triggered

okay i could literally write an essay on all the bad kids mental stuff and neurodivergence and everything but 1) kristen is just a unit of cPTSD with freckles 2) adaine and aelwyn have the SUPER WEIRD combo of adaine being the externalizer and aelwyn being an internalizer and i think that’s the thing that like. yes DID fuck up aelwyn for a long time but ultimately is what saved both of them. like i believe very strongly that if this tendency had been flipped they’d both be completely screwed

okay speaking of aelwyn 1) claustrophobia now right?? like we can all agree on that ?? 2) this is NOT just me projecting (yes it is) but i think aelwyn has chronic pain/fatigue for a good while after s2. like you cant spend almost a YEAR at five levels of exhaustion doing one extremely restricted repetitive motion and not like ???? completely fuck up your body??? like yes she and fabian totally swordfight and duel and stuff but also i think it takes a WHILE before she can do any physical activity without getting completely wiped out. because spells do seem to take SOME level of energy or whatever from you (spell slots, otherwise you could just do them all the time) i think this probably includes spells

gorgug is like. extremely good with kids. toddlers especially. he talks to them like they can totally understand everything (great for development!) and is just very patient and kind and good but also does not mind being used as a jungle gym and WILL throw a child into a beanbag chair for two hours straight (ALSO great for development!). fabian also thinks babies are the cutest things on the planet but will NOT admit that so he mostly tags along when gorgug babysits because he’s “just SO bored he CANT find anything better to do UGH” and secretly is like. babies <3

kristen and tracker are the academy’s GSA moms. theyll be like “hello my child” and the other kid will be like im four months older than you??? and theyre like “that does not matter <3″

adaine and aelwyn were DEF forced into like. piano and violin lessons growing up but when fig finds out shes VERY EXCITED they can play together and like. does piano and violin and bass sound good together?? dont worry about it. its the first time playing music is actually fun for the two of them

ayda, after more research and understanding, is totally the type of person who’d walk up to someone in the grocery store and be like “hello i believe you are autistic like me let me explain what that is” and fig is like. babe. babe. we were just here for fruit snacks. babe.

Aaaaaa thank you so much!! And yes I absolutely do have more thoughts on that au (for everyone who doesn’t know, this is a fabriz kid fic au that you can find here). Anyway here’s Stuff in no particular order:

Gorgug/Ragh/Zelda’s daughter is named Drigka (who was actually name by @collectoroflovelythings) because it’s a half orc name that sounds like Digby and Wilma!!

I already wrote this in the comments section, but I’m gonna put it here too. Sometime recent in their years of living together, Fabian just decided to start acting like a married couple with Riz and like it was fine because he’s gone most of the time. And Riz’s coworkers will hear about his roommate and everything and then suddenly Riz is like Super busy for three months a year or shows up to company parties tugging along this really handsome, obviously into him half elf and they’re like Riz,, you know we’re all gay right, you don’t have to be worried about telling us you’re married and he’s like guys wtf. (This was literally ripped straight from my explanation in the comment but I Like it)

Riz pitches a Huge fit when he figures out that Cathilda calls him “baba” because she’s trying to say Ball. He makes a clue board to convince her why she should call him anything but that for when she’s older and can understand him (of course he never uses it, he loves that she has a special name for him)

Cathilda is an assassin rogue!! But her dada (Fabian) enrolled her in dance classes as soon as she expressed interest in them so she combines elements of dance (specifically ballet I’m thinking, mostly because I was a ballet kid) with her rogue abilities, kind of like Zelda’s barbarian battle dancing

Fig and Ayda have a kid like two months after Riz and Fabian get Cathilda (because magic gestation is shorter idk don’t look too closely at it) and her name is Oriane (fig wanted to name her fire but that was a little too spot on for ayda), and they’re a sorcerer!! Fig mostly just calls them Ori or Ana though, and she’s a part of Cathilda’s adventuring party later on and they’re practically raised as twins

Speaking of nicknames, Cathilda gets called different things by all of the bad kids. Kristen goes with Cat or Catty, Fig calls her Hilda (of course), Adaine and Riz use Cathilda but also use pet names like honey, Gorgug also usually just calls her Cathilda but sometimes switches it up with Cathy, and Fabian likes to say he only calls her by her entire, full name but normally only uses Cathilda or Cathilda the Small

I’m currently planning two sequel part-things. The second one takes place when Cathilda starts school, and the third takes place when she goes on her first quest with her party at Augefort. I haven’t decided whether Riz’s pov will continue through the whole series or not, but I might switch to Fabian and then Cathilda for the next two fics, we’ll see!!

so ik we’re building up to a huge actual battle at prom but... do you have any headcanons for the bad kids going to (normal, non-deadly) prom?

Here’s one or two for each kid:

Gorgug

Even though everyone totally knows that Zelda likes him, including him, he would be a total disaster asking her to prom. Adaine would tell him, "Look. I used my oracle powers. She's gonna say yes. Just ask her." And as soon as he's out of earshot she's like, "Yeah I still have no idea how my powers work. He just needed a push." Also, he would bring her a tin flower corsage, natch.

Fig

Fig is essentially her mom except turned up to 11 because the apocalypse is happening. So I think she's gonna burn through her rebellious streak so fast and every year of high school, she's gonna have an increasingly typical prom experience. Like, first year she goes in, wearing a suit, pranking people, spiking the punch. By senior year she's having the whole fairytale prom experience with a perfectly respectable (age appropriate)  guy that no one who knew her freshman year can believe she's dating (but prob still spiking the punch because it's still Fig).

Adaine

With the Bad Kids new Cool Kids Status and her oracle status, Adaine would for sure get a ton of offers her first prom, but I think it's pretty likely she's go stag or with the group just cause she's had way too much on her plate for that to even be on her radar at all this year. I do think she'd use her cool points to help bail out anyone not having a super dope time at prom due to social awkwardness since she knows what it's like (along w/ liberal useage of detect thoughts to make sure she's not walking into a Biz Giltterdew situation, though she clocked him right away so I trust her judgement).

Fabian

I think Fabian might also go stag his first prom believe it or not. You know, sobered by his dad's death and all. He sometimes gets contemplative. Of course, this is Fabian we're talking about so he just as easily could show up, riding the Hangman, wearing something ridiculous like this or this. Who knows with him?

Also, sidenote, if he has the audacity to ask Adaine to prom after all of what happened (and he might, Seacaster men have a lot of audacity), he better save her life at least three times in the Kalvaxus fight.

Riz

I imagine at least some of the girls Riz saved would be interested in taking him to prom, if just for the "You saved my life" factor. Riz doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who'd be super interested in prom in general, but if Penny asked him to go with her just like as a thank you, he'd like that. And he’d do it to make him mom happy that he’s doing a fun, normal kid thing after being in jail for like two months or whatever. She worries. 

(Riz’s mom diverts all available resources making sure their prom goes off without a hitch because after that hell year, the kids deserve that much.) 

Kristen

Kristen would ask Tracker out to prom but in a totally awkward and ambiguous way that, when recounted to the others, would make them go, "Wait, did you ever actually ask her out?"

And she wouldn't want to ask her again because the first time was so awkward. Kristen literally doesn't know if she has a date to prom or not until Tracker shows up to Strongtower in a matching outfit even (thank Sol or whoever).
