A compositional and symbolic analysis of the kantbison bdsm scene from the heart killers

After watching the heart killers trailer about 100 times, there is one scene that keeps getting stuck in my head. Or one frame I guess.

I've had to study too much iconography this month and need to let my thoughts out somewhere.

So here's my two cents

The first thing that caught my eye was Jesus in the middle of the frame. Well it's Bison in the middle but Jesus on his shirt. For a show that goes so much into crime, good/evil, gay sex, and kink, a character wearing religious imagery on his clothes can not be a coincidence.

At first, I thought this to mean that religion is a burden Bison carries on his back (literally). I thought his character might have some religious trauma or overall religious past that still affects him. Maybe he is still religious, explaining why he would wear the shirt, but the experiences he had in the church weren't positive (him being gay and all) so he wears Jesus on his back showing he still struggles with faith, and carries it like a burden.

But taking the rest of the scene into account, I think it might be more.

To start the entire composition is balanced. It's not entirely symmetrical (art never is), but broadly speaking the weight is evenly distributed.

There is Bison in the middle of the bed (also centered) framed by a lamp on each side. It seems pretty clear-cut. A triangular composition like this can be used to show hierarchy, the top being the most important, which would seem logical here since Bison is sitting on top of Kant and clearly has control. It also tends to stand for ascension towards the spiritual realm. A bit far fetched but could be a metaphor for the sex they are about to have. Going back to religion, triangular compositions were used sometimes as a symbol for the holy trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Although to make this a strong argument I would need three focus objects to link each to, and two lamps and Bison just aren't a convincing case.

Looking closer there is a point to be made that it isn't actually symmetrical. The right side of the room has more light and, more importantly, a lava lamp.

This lava lamp is a very bright color and part of the red composition of this piece. The red tones in this frame are the most saturated colors in this piece, and clearly aim to catch our attention.

This composition once again leaves the frame unbalanced. I started thinking, maybe it's supposed to be like that. Almost perfect but just not. Almost satisfying, Almost according to the rules. Was this how Kant and Bisons dynamic was built? They seem good but are a tiny bit off (was this about Kant lying to Bison about his intentions)?

But then I started looking at the other side of the bed, the empty place where the lava lamp was lacking. And there I saw a cross.

Not just any cross, but it is a cross with a necklace draped over it with a cross pendant on it. This could be a very strong argument for the theory of religious (trauma) Bison.

That is if it is Bisons, or even Kants room as we see them *spent the night* in three different rooms meaning that at least one of those rooms isn't theirs. (Although I am very certain the red room is a hotel room, as it is also the place they hooked up in on their first night)

Now for the sake of my argument I will be assuming it to be Bisons room because in the wardrobe in the cuddle room you can see a yellow shirt that looks a lot like the one Kant owns.

In that case the cross in Bison's room clearly just strengthens the point that he is religious. The necklace being around the cross but not around his neck in any of the scenes means he has some kind of mental barrier (religious guilt) that prevents him from wearing and showing his faith outside.

Although he is wearing a necklace in this scene that we don't see the pendant off (and that he isn't wearing when with Kant while still wearing the same clothes(taking it off when with his gay lover cuz those are two separate worlds)) but looking at the chain thickness it could also be a very different necklace.

To get back to the composition though (horrible segway), it could be that the cross tells us something about the story too.

Because the rest of the piece is balanced, it is possible that where the lava lamp has visual weight in the composition, the cross has symbolic weight.

The cross is obviously tied to Jesus and his sacrificial act of dying for humanity's sins. It is also one of a friend betraying a friend (or lover for all the jesus/judas shippers out there).

With the amount of sinning the characters do in the show I think it is mostly likely the former. I think the cross is foreshadowing for one of the character's sacrifice. One of the characters will either take the blame for all the crimes and go to jail or get killed saving the others.

It isn't weird that this foreshadowing would be in this scene. With the conversations Kant and Bison already had about the possibilities of one of them dying and what the other would do, it is probably one of them to sacrifice themselves.

It also makes sense to be here while Kant is blindfolded. This scene (other than being hot) shows that they trust eachother. Bdsm can be dangerous and does require good communication and trust. The amount they trust eachother could also lead the way for a jesus/judas dynamic of betrayal before the sacrifice, but we'll have to see about that (waiting for a scene where one of them washes the others feet).

In this scene no one is tied up yet (the rope/ribbon Bison holds is only tied to the bedframe, no clue why he is holding it like that) but I suspect that the person who will be tied up will be the one to sacrifice themselves in the end. As the ways of punishment by cross were done by nailing someone or tying them to it.

This is further strengthened by the fact that the rope/ribbon is red. This could be symbolic of the blood they will spill or could be a reference to the red strings of faith. Tying them up for sex would be tying them down to their destiny of dying.

It is Kant lying down on the bed blindfolded, clearly in a more submissive position, so it makes sense for him to be the one to be tied up. He also alluded to the fact that if Bison died, he wouldn't want to live anymore, a clear motive for self-sacrifice.

However, if Bison is really religious the cross is already symbolically tied to him. Not only that, he also literally has Jesus on his shirt, he is carrying his own destiny with him. If we go back to the composition though Bison being placed in the center of the triangle could be him in the center of the holy trinity [you didn't think I mentioned that for nothing did you]. This could place him as the son, the sacrifice (I'm not very well versed on the holy trinity lore, but aren't they all the same fucking thing, can't Bison be all three of them).

Omg i just realized I have something tiny to add to the whole James Somerton debacle. I'm currently watching the hbombguy vid (as you do when procrastinating assignments) and I remembered something that stood out to me in James' old videos.

So I used to be a fan of his stuff. I am also a fan of Hannibal and IWTV. He made a video covering both so naturally I was very hyped. It was called 'The Gay Appeal of Toxic Love.' The vid itself was fine (I don't remember having any super strong opinions of it besides being excited to hear ppl mention Interview cuz I had recently become obsessed) but one thing did stand out to me. In the IWTV section he mentions Nicki and, naturally, his death:

"After becoming a vampire, Nicky becomes nearly catatonic, and eventually slips away from Lestat entirely. And after centuries of dealing with depression and severe mental illness, Nicky kills himself."

To anyone who's read TVL, I don't think I need to explain that Nicki had not, in fact, been around for centuries. "Nicki had lived to be 30" has been rattling around in my head since I first read it.

And like, obviously I don't expect every youtube essayist to read several long-ish novels to have a full grasp of the series' deep lore, especially when the focus was largely on IWTV and Loustat rather than the entire Vampire Chronicles. Still, it makes you wonder a bit about the quality of the research being done here. You can find the proper info in like, 5 seconds by just going on the fan wiki so I'm not sure what his sources were. And that's the issue at hand, isn't it?

At the time I felt a tiny bit smug recognizing the error but in light of everything that's been revealed, it's kind of telling. I'm not saying this part was plagiarized (I haven't found anything but others on reddit have found issues with different sections of the same video) but rereading the transcript it comes off as someone who clearly doesn't know much about Interview.... It feels like he's reading through a loose summary of plot points rather than analyzing a piece of media that actually means anything to him. It's very much Interview for people who don't know Interview which, one could argue is fair. Especially beyond book one, VC is a niche series and a lot of elements that are important to certain characters or plot lines cannot be summarized quickly for an audience unfamiliar with it. A good writer, who's done a lot of research about the specific topic they have chosen to make a video on, would be able to balance this. There is a LOT to analyze about queerness in VC and its a shame to see one of the more popular queer media channels half-assing it just to churn out videos heavily made up of other people's work. In retrospect he had several videos like that, where he would discuss things like manga/manhua communities while clearly having little knowledge on the nuance of those subjects. He was an outsider who presented himself with a strange amount of authority.

This was content created with the sole intention of propping up queer stories and history, yet it's built off stolen work from queer authors and doesn't actually care that much about exploring the communities it features. Vids like the IWTV one weren't really fact checked because it's only people like me who would might give a shit or even notice anything is off in the first place. There's a bit of a similar vibe in some of his other vids where he undermines the experiences of queer women because he clearly has not taken the time to learn about the nuances of representing queer women in media. These are things that irritated me when I first started to notice them but I put those concerns in the back of my mind because I cared about the topics he was covering and was excited to see these discussions becoming more mainstream.

The revelations of this evening have been disappointing to say the least.

(also for the record I know he made other more recent vids about IWTV but I haven't seen those and even if his account was still up I don't think I would lol

I have this headcanon that emmeline vance is one of regulus' besties and part of slytherin skittles. I hc that she is a hufflepuff (although a lot of people hc she is in ravenclaw i just have a vision) and a muggleborn. Their houses are kind of close so they just run into each other when reg runs away from home (i mean with the intention of returning, just like a little act of defiance that orion and walburga never find out about) and maybe connect over books and stuff and reg is interested in things em would know about as a muggle concerning literature and other things because he is naturally curious.

Nobody can know about their friendship as reg states and if em is a bit taken aback by that she doesn't show it because even if she doesn't hear the rumours of black family's questionable ways of discipline as she isn't part of the pureblood circles, even she can tell there is more to the story that reg doesn't let on. Maybe they explore their sexuality together a little bit (like maybe they kiss and stuff and reg thinks there is smt wrong with him because em is a pretty girl and he does really like her personality and he can't wrap his head around why he wouldn't want to do this with her. He first thinks there is smt wrong with him till he comes to the conclusion that he is gay. And em is the first person he comes out to)

In this hc dorcas is a half blood slytherin and reg's quiditch captain and after having a muggleborn friend for all those years he isn't a blood purist at heart so when she is being bullied for such things reg stands by her side and defends her abilities as an excellent quidditch player and captain which starts their friendship although at this point evan, barty, and pandora still don't know about emmeline. (Maybe pan suspects things being a seer and all- cuz yes she is a seer in my hc too) (also cas and em are a year older than the rest) and anyway dorcas becomes a part of their circle too. Maybe reg sort of push em and dorcas together (you know being partners in certain projects and stuff since they are in the same year) but still doesn't tell anyone about em openly since that would cause troubles with his family.

After sirius runs away and the abuse becomes too much to bear even for regulus he runs from home and em takes him in. He stays in their house for a bit and em is the one who writes to dumbledore about the abuse and sirius and she understands why he would want to keep their friendship a secret. After he is out however, he does openly make emmeline a part of the slytherin skittles

And they live happily ever after :)

Anyway yes my thoughts might be a bit scattered but i had this vision 4 so long i had to share.

Ok so I was born with a fairly common girls name. This fairly common name has a nickname. So my parents called me this nickname. Let’s say my name was Susan*, but shortened to Susie*.

And I had a step cousin also named Susan*. No matter how hard I tried to get my family to call me Susan, I was told no.. I’m Susie. My step cousin is older so she was here first? She gets dibs on it. (Keep in mind my cousin was willing to call me Susan, out of respect)

I never liked my name to begin with, but I loathed the nickname. So one day, I learn my uncle is going my his middle name.. and I’m like bet. If I can’t get them to call me Susan, maybe I can go by my middle name.

So for years I go by my middle name, Lynn, instead. It takes a while to get people on board. Nearly 30 years of “Susie” is hard for these people to change. But it’s worth the fight to change it, because for the first time in my life? Hearing my name made me HAPPY.

So after a night of being called Susie repeatedly, even having my niece told to call me “Auntie Susie” I make a post about how I am Lynn. How I feel like if people call me Susie then they aren’t respecting me. How I won’t tolerate it anymore, Susie is a child’s name and I’m an adult and want to be treated like an adult. Susie and even Susan never felt right anyway. Lynn does. Lynn makes me happy.

My cousin R, (Susan’s brother) decides to comment on my post saying “Just make them call you Susan. Make them respect you as Susan. You don’t need to change your whole name just to make people respect you. Make them respect Susan.”

And I’m just like.. that’s the whole point. If you respected me, you wouldn’t be trying to make me go by Susan or any variation of it. You’d respect that being Lynn makes me happy. You just don’t want me to be Lynn because it’s inconvenient for you to call me a new name.

And when I changed my name legally by 2017, my grandma tried to say it was just a phase. (A $400 phase?? Lmao)

Anyway that green post has me thinking about this.. cuz people really will try to make you live YOUR life THEIR way even though it’s YOUR life and it’s not hurting anybody to just change your name. Or gender. Or be gay. Or take meds for an illness. Or whatever.

*Neither my nor my cousins name were Susan, or Susie, it’s just the most similar example I could think of to my deadname. I hate my deadname so fuckin much I have no intention of sharing it. Lynn however, really is my name.

FULL REVIEW UNDER THE CUT

The Story

This episode is up there as far as quality, it almost feels as though THIS should’ve been the pilot as opposed to TNOT Inferno. It’s finally got all of its limbs (meaning Artemus has his proper characterization which is what was missing in the pilot) and doesn’t have the same racist trappings as the previous installation. All the major elements pay off, the mystery isn’t sloppy, the villain and lady of the week are well written. The biggest drawback is that stupid unnecessarily complex death trap that gave the episode its name. Why does the hotel even have that?!Why didn’t Jim get sedated enough for that to even be an issue?! It’s so dumb that it borders on Batman series levels of comically avoidable. It’s just not quite a 5, gotta reserve that for the best of the best.

The Dame

Our lady of the week is Barbara Luna! Whom I know as Marlena from the Star Trek TOS episode Mirror Mirror!

Say it with my y’all, I. Love. Gatita!! She’s so awesome and one of the best female characters this show has ever had. Which is WILD cuz we’re like 2 episodes in and there’s a 102 more. She’s intelligent and brave, she’s got her own personality and motivations. She is working for the baddie to protect her people who’ve been enslaved by him. She even fights back in her own way by giving his girlfriend food when he’s trying to starve her, not to mention attacking one of the guards! The relationship she develops with Jim feels genuine and relatively well developed. The only reason she’s not getting a perfect 5 is because she gets treated and written as “exotic” in the first half of the episode but that’s not a fault of her as a character.

The Villain

Our villain of the week is played by JD Connor!

What a great and hateable villain, he is cruel to women and minorities, he’s got an overdeveloped sense of class, and he’s got delusions of grandeur. Also he’s idea of a train killing train to take over the US with is extremely unhinged and silly which is exactly what we need in our Wild Wild West villains. He’s not perfect though. He lacks a certain uniqueness that would have him stand out amongst other egotistical traitors and invading powers that frequently pop up in this show.

The Gadgets

They knocked it out of the park again with the gadgets this episode. Particularly the explosive coal which was such a fun Chekov’s Gun this episode, with satisfying high stakes pay off. We also see our good friend knock out gas featured, and the first but not the last instance of Artie accidentally getting KOed by his own invention lol. The ring was also a neat gimmick and I’m kinda disappointed we don’t really get to see it again.

The Disguise

Artemus’s disguise in this episode was fun, well thought out, and useful. He successfully infiltrated the labor camp where Jim and Gatita’s village were being held. He used it (and a drunken rendition of one of my fav Spanish folk songs “Malagueña Salerosa”) to rescue Jim, and he also exploited it as means to start a revolt while Jim planted the bombs! The only reason it’s not a 5 out of 5 is because he didn’t really do a specific character, he was just trying to blend in which isn’t as insane or enjoyable as his more fleshed out personas.

The Gay Subtext

(Don’t ship it? Skip it!)

A joke could be made about Artemus giving Jim a specially made ring and to “wear it in good health”. There’s also a moment where Gatita feels like she could be making a joke about Jim being bi when she talks about “looking for a girl, now you’re looking for a man” which I think is hilarious even if it wasn’t intentional. Then of course we have our regularly scheduled story beats of Artemus looking like the world just fell out from under him when he thinks Jim is dead, and looking bitter (or dare say jealous) and exasperated when Jim makes out with the woman of the week at the end of the episode.

The Yikes Dated Factor

When I put yikes dated at 0 that does NOT mean there was nothing problematic in the episode. However there was very little that was straight up cringeworthy that made me embarrassed on behalf of white people or made me wanna turn the episode off. There were microaggressions and casual nationalism for sure, but no shoe polish or wildly inappropriate caricatures. For the time this show was made it was very respectful and for that I will give this episode props!

While I've been watching JK's live (post coming soon) someone pointed out the rings JK is wearing in his Seven schedule poster... the ring with the ring on it...has connotations in the BDSM world... those who wear it are signaling their submissiveness. In that same line of thought, Jimin was wearing thumb rings on both hands in his Like Crazy MV... thumb rings in a homosexual context...

and this could be an outdated thing, but a man is signaling he is open to certain types of sex... this is definitely outdated but at one time men wearing a single earring in the left ear signals he's straight, in the right ear he is gay. In the Like Crazy MV, Jimin had his single earring in the left ear but he looks into the mirror and it is in his right ear.

The bisexual/bigender coding in the MV was off the charts.

And we already talked about Jimin's Like Crazy MV Mapplethorpe pants and how David Mapplethorpe was deep into the BDSM world.

We've heard Jimin asking JK if he liked it when he was tied at the wrists and running through the woods... ahem... I've already talked about their lil kinky selves before... I can't find the posts but if you've been following me a while, you know what I've been saying...

So what are Jimin and Jungkook trying to tell us? Why show us these things? Are these just stylists choices? I think not. There are too many instances for any of it to be coincidence or just a "stylists choice."

The members are too involved in how they express themselves individually during this solo era. Sexual kink is not really a big deal but why even go there? Personally, I love seeing them express ALL sides of themselves. The hints Jimin has given us are more and more explicit as time goes on. I don't buy the argument that "they don't know what that means." Of course they do. They are grown men. They are not virgins. They are living breathing red-blooded males in the prime of their lives.

The way they are presenting these concepts to us is still very conservative when compared to what I see from western artists. What Jimin and Jungkook have shown us, especially Jimin... is very tasteful, elegant, teasing and thought provoking, not raunchy and in-your-face. I want to say to some western artists: I would prefer not to have your twat in my face so please close your legs. But alas...

And now it is Jungkook's time to show us his colors. For some reason I don't mind his crotch in my face... I digress...

I just got to 2x15 and I used to be an ardent defender of The Betrayal™️ like “well DUH it was OBVIOUSLY the right decision to make, Clarke would’ve done the same thing!” which yeah I still kinda stand by canon-wise but like… writing-wise is it just me or is the whole thing kind of dumb 😭 Like they were already winning??? There was no point in not just killing Emerson and Cage and all the others and freeing the Sky People and civilians??? The Sky People have made powerful allies, can cure Reapers, and are the only reason they’ve made it this far and she just leaves them to die??? I don’t know, unless Lexa was like, really fuckin sure that Clarke could handle things just fine on her own, it doesn’t make any kind of logical sense to me if I really think about it for more than a few seconds.

It feels kind of out of character for Lexa too, like the Grounders inside Mount Weather are an army waiting to be set free to defeat the Mountain Men, are likely willing to die for the cause and the greater good (which Lexa literally said in the previous episode that you should be able to tell your people to die for you!) — like, bad thing: many of the Grounders inside the Mountain die fighting. But good thing: the Mountain Men are defeated and in the long run the Grounder suffering under their oppression which has lasted 97 years finally ends. It seems like a worthy sacrifice to me and I just think it’s an odd, contradictory heel-turn for Lexa to suddenly make.

I don’t know am I making any sense here or am I literally the only one overthinking this 😂

No it really did make no sense beyond juat setting up the adversarial plotline between Clarke and Lexa and furthering the dynamics between Skaikru and the clans.

Realistically, logically, strategically - it made no sense. None. Cuz, even beyond just what you're saying, Lexa taking the deal in turn means the MM keep the skairats. Whom they were harvesting bone marrow from. Which allowed them to walk freely outside.

Considering???? That they had every intention of wiping out the Grounders, whyyyy in god's fucking name would Lexa "I got a phat ass and love stinky blonde bitches" Kom Trikru willingly provide the very key that would allow them easier ability in the future to annihilate her people??

It's? Illogical? And fucking nonsense?

But I'm supposed to believe that she made that choice? I'm supposed to believe that someone who won her conclave at the age of like 11-12, who beat and bartered 12 warring clans into submission, who found her lover's severed head in her bed and then still accepted the murderer into her alliance for the best of her people... I'm supposed to believe she would take such a short-sighted, lopsided deal? Really? Really?

I mean when you look at it from just a narrative perspective, yes of course it makes sense. Sacrifices have to be made yada yada, my people or yours blah blah blah, she loves her but had to choose her people bing bong balsjdjslk. I get it, I do, and it was a very compelling moment to watch. Truly, I love that episode, it was devastating and shocking and they acted it so gd well it still holds up. Like every rewatch makes my lil gay heart clench, and I'm not kidding. But take even one step back and look at the entire picture of the situation and actually who Lexa is as a person and leader, and the whole fucking plot just falls apart
