As someone who’s been in the fandom for a long time, are there any DR ships that used to be more popular but aren’t now?

Mikan and Ibuki used to be a really popular ship. I only see their one dedicated solider on tumblr who still ships it.

Kokichi and Gonta also died in popularity

I also see a lot less Imposter and Ibuki and Imposter and Akane, honestly just imposter ships in general took a big hit due to danganronpa 3 introducing Ryota.

Oumami was definitely a lot more popular early v3 days then it is now, so is Kaemaki, and Irouma

Ryoma and Gonta was also decently popular along with Korekiyo and Gonta but that's also a lot sparser these days. While never super popular you also never see much shuichi and korekiyo these days either, or Korekiyo and Rantaro, or korekiyo and angie, korekiyo is just not as popular as he once was i think.

Naekusaba is also sparser these days, likely due to age of the ship more then anything they haven't really interacted in a meaningful way since danganronpa if and danganronpa zero.

I never paid enough attention to it to say for sure but irumatsu and tojoshi also seems a bit sparser these days.

Oh kiibouma! Kiibouma is definitely while still got some hard hitters has definitely gotten a lot less common. Also Oumeno? I have no idea where Oumeno stands right now Oumeno is just static in my brain I never think about it unless it's right in front of me so I can't say for sure but I think it's less popular.

Naegami feels like it shouldn't be here but as someone who was a Naegami shipper in the 2010s it has absolutely passed it's peak of being fucking everywhere. It's still popular of course, it's just a more manageable popular now. Naejunko has also def passed it's prime.

Celesgiri is also a lot less common, I think people got more into ot3 shipping and so needing to pair Kirigiri up became a bit less needed, still popular i think, just not as popular as it used to be. It's come a long way from like top 3 yuri ships.

I feel like Komaegi had like, a big year or two and then faded back into being more rare. I have ZERO idea how Junkan currently stands in the fandom's vibes. Kamunami had a bit of a few good years thanks to dr3 but it also very much peaked and calmed back down.

Mahiyoko feels like its more popular then it actually currently is, i think that one got shot a bit by discourse on Hiyoko and never recovered.

Does tsumioda fit under traditional sun/moon dynamic? Or do they fit under an unconventional way?

Welcome, anon! Thanks for asking about my favorite ship, it's always a pleasure. I reckon that tsumioda only seems to fit that dynamic. What I love about Danganronpa characters is that they rarely fit so neatly into such a simplistic framework!

Consider Ibuki. Always excited, often peppy, likes to cheer people up. If anyone's the sun, it's our neon-haired rock star! But if you take out the concert lazers and pyrotechnic displays, you get a lonely girl on a darkened stage - which is, after all, our final image of her. Her death is a feigned suicide, made possible after she's been stripped of her distinctive personality and reduced to a mindless, obedient husk. This seems intentional on the writers' part, but what does it mean? I think it represents a deep-seated loneliness inside Ibuki Mioda, implied in other parts of SDR2. She accepts her weird and quirky self, she won't change for anyone else's sake ... but I think she wishes for someone to accept her, too. The sun can shine on its own. Ibuki is clearly not void of joy, but she still needs to rig her own lighting.

Then there's Mikan. Seemingly the picture of a moon type, down to the deep purple shade of her hair. But moon types are usually gloomy, right? She's anxious, easily driven to tears, frequently miserable ... but "gloomy" doesn't quite fit her. Her hopefulness and eagerness for positive social interactions is an underrated aspect of her. It's sad that she gets so much out of a simple good morning from Hajime, but her smile is still pure and adorable and radiant. Maybe she could be a sun type if certain people would just leave her the heck alone! After all, aren't sun types often nurturing figures? Like nurses? She may not have the most selfless motivations or mindset for her chosen career path, but when disease strikes in Chapter 3, only a literal and magical reversal of her personality can stop her from giving everything to aid her affected friends.

So tsumioda can't really be a sun-moon dynamic. I think it's greater than that. Not to totally dismiss an apparently popular type of ship, but doesn't it seem a bit like a one-way street? The moon reflects the sun's light - wonderful! poetic! - but what does the sun get out of it? The pleasure to shine? Ibuki seems to find fulfillment in helping other people, as we see with Hajime in her FTEs. But who'll help her? Who can show that she can be accepted, even loved, for who she is?

I believe Mikan would. She knows all too well what it's like to not feel loved or accepted. She knows loneliness, and the struggle to hold strong against a world that wants to pin her down. She'd never want to dim Ibuki's light, the way so many others dimmed her own. Anyone could expect Ibuki to be the sun in Mikan's sky, banishing the darkness that's long defined her life. My view of tsumioda has always been that Mikan would see through the artifice of Ibuki's light, then nurture a light great enough to brighten their world.

This dynamic shines both ways. When one is in a moon state, the other will be the sun. Yin and yang. That's love, baby.

.......... But that's all just my opinion, based on my own reading of these two characters!

Hiii. First off, I'm so sorry if this is annoying, but I. Have a lot of Nanamiki thoughts and thought you might like them? I was talking with a friend about them (he hasn't played danganronpa so he doesn't really know them but he was still super nice and listened to me ramble) and I realized that you may be interested in what I had to say about them?

First off, I think nanamiki is a lot more complex than what a lot of people make it out to be, in my opinion. She ship was first popularized by the optional scene in SDR2 where Chiaki and Mikan play video games together. It's a very cute scene, and I urge anyone who hasn't seen it to look it up, because it makes it clear that Mikan and Chiaki are friends, or at least have the potential to be friends, and the relationship is very positive and sweet on Chiaki's side. Nanamiki as a pairing got very popular in the komahina fandom back before DR3 came out (I can only really attest for about a year before DR3 came out, but this was very much the vibe I got) as a pairing to get Chiaki out of the way of komahina. Back before DR3, I saw a lot of double date fics with the two couples, and a lot of Komahina fics where they were a side pairing. They were, for the most part, regulated to "lesbian best friends of komahina", which, nowadays, ever since DR3, has seemed to be replaced with Soniaki and sometimes Tsumioda instead. Now, I like Soniaki, and I don't have anything against people who ship Tsumioda (even if it's not personally my cup of tea), but as a Nanamiki lover, I have noticed a fandom shift to favoring these ships just from my own observations. Which, good for people who like those ships! I just can't help but look back longingly on the Era where nanamiki was the standard wlw ship - even if that Era was rife with issues.

Even back then, you would be hard pressed to find any work that explored Nanamiki in depth that wasn't a one shot - and most if those one shots were plotless or near plotless fluff. This, to some degree, makes sense. Nanamiki's origin *was* plotless fluff - it was Chiaki showing Mikan a fun game and teaching her how to play. That's what the whole scene was, and that scene is the ships origin point. On works that did focus on nanamiki in depth, there was an emphasis on Chiaki comforting Mikan, which also makes sense, as that scene was Chiaki reaching out and being nice to Mikan. When I was young/a teenager, I also wrote fics similar- with Chiaki reaching out to Mikan, and helping her overcome her trauma.

However, now that I'm older, I look back on what a lot of these fics were (including my own), and I find myself somewhat discontent with the state of them. I feel a lot of these works fall into woobifying Mikan, and having Chiaki putting all the work and effort into "fixing" Mikan and her life. Oftentimes, there's no discussion about Chiaki's wants or needs, and those go unaddressed. It doesn't feel balanced, like a give and take dynamic, but instead like Chiaki is putting so much into the relationship and getting none of her needs met. A lot of times, there's not even fleshed out reasons why Chiaki would be dating Mikan - what she gets out of it, not just what she provides. Now, arguably, this is because most stories involving them are one shots - there just isn't time to explore both of them in depth, and its only a snapshot of their relationship. But even with that, there is an overabundance of Chiaki taking care of Mikan with oftentimes little to no indication that she does the same. I think this is partially because a lot of people are primed to see relationships as "what can this person do for me?" and not "what can we do for each other?" A lot of times, the dynamics aren't mutual and balanced. To be fair, life is messy in real life - sometimes one person is going to be putting in more work than the other one at the moment, but usually that is a temporary situation—and when they can, they reciprocate later. Relationships have their ups and downs. But I can't help but wish that we saw a more balanced dynamic between the two in fics, at least the fluffy ones.

But while I do acknowledge that the ship has fluffy origins, I am desperate for non-fluffy content. I think only having fluffy stuff does a disservice to the relationship - especially for Mikan. Mikan, in my opinion, is a very messy, traumatized person, and I don't like how a lot of people candy coat this in an attempt to write really fluffy relationship stuff (not just aimed at nanamiki works). Her trauma wouldn't just go away after getting in a relationship, and a relationship wouldn't just fix all her problems, either. Reducing her down to "crybaby who just needs love" misses the point of her character - while it's true she needs support, she can't just survive on one person, one relationship alone. She needs a support system, not (just) a girlfriend. In my opinion, Mikan would be a disaster in a relationship - and not just in a cute, insecure, shy way. Mikan has a lot of feelings and she feels them very violently, including love - she gets obsessive, is a chronic people pleaser, and threatens to break Hajime's legs in her island mode. Her whole motive for being a nurse is because she likes the power it gives her over her patients. This characterization, that she's a poor little baby who did nothing wrong and just needs real love to heal her, is a disservice to her character.

I want to see Mikan being complicated. I want to see her having maladaptive and unhealthy coping mechanisms. I want her to be messy. That's what I love about her character- that she is a deeply, truly traumatized person who is sometimes awful and sometimes a wreck of a person, but despite that, she's a victim. Despite that, she deserve to heal - or maybe because of that. Mikan is very much informed by her trauma, in a very unhealthy way, but she is still, ultimately, a person who needed help and didn't get it. She is a person society failed.

She didn't just need a lover. She needed a support system, she needed people to constantly stand up for her, constantly love her, support her—she needed people to not hurt her in the first place.

Sorry, I got pretty passionate about that. My point is, I wish there was more complicated Nanamiki - Nanamiki that addresses Chiaki's needs, Nanamiki that addresses Mikan's dark sides, Nanamiki that is complicated and messy.

I think, too, that DR3 (while having a lot of things I didn't like) had a compelling idea for Nanamiki (if I'm remembering right). Before Mikan pushes Chiaki into the hallway Chisa finds her, if I'm remembering right, Mikan talks about how everyone loves and admires Chiaki... and to me, she sounds jealous. Now that. That is interesting to me. I find that SO compelling - the idea that Mikan sees herself in Chiaki, and it infuriates her, because everyone loves and adores Chiaki and she feels like no one feels the same for her. Now, I have extrapolated a lot of feelings on Mikan's side from that short interaction, and maybe that's not the intent of canon, but honestly? I really like what I've extrapolated. With that in mind, there's even more you could headcanon about Mikan and Chiaki and their state of their relationship during the despair arc: Chiaki acts like she loves Mikan, but Mikan can't believe that, how could someone so loved like Chiaki love her? Maybe she even wants to test that love, test the limits of it, behave badly or hurt her to prove to herself that Chiaki never *really* loved her in the first place, that her "forgiveness" was fragile. (Think similar to the dynamic of dogbird by maddy, I guess?) Maybe she's jealous, so bitterly jealous, that people love Chiaki and no one loves her. Maybe she's secretly angry that Chiaki can get along with Hiyoko so well when she bullies her, and she's angry at herself for being angry, because isn't what Hiyoko does to her what she deserves? And yet Chiaki says she doesn't deserve that, yet at the same time is friends with someone who treats her like that... she's confused and hurt and internalizing all of it. I could go on.

I think, in DR3, it was a real missed opportunity to have the remnants turn on Chiaki slowly instead of being brainwashed. In a hypothetical AU, instead of being brainwashed, Junko turns them against her, or calls to question her love, makes them doubt her - and maybe that's not enough to get them to turn on her fully, but when she proposes a "test" of her hope in the form of a murder maze, they agree (Nagito first because he's all about testing hope and has faith in Chiaki, Mikan second because of her devotion to Junko—or reverse order, I'm not picky—and then everyone else reluctantly following). That isn't canon by any means, but it's the AU I tend to go with when I keep human Chiaki in my fanfic.

In that situation, Mikan becomes like a Judas figure. Actually, lower one's eyes (specifically trickles cover) portrays what I imagine Mikan would feel perfectly. Another song that really fits Nanamiki (imo) is lacy by Olivia Rodrigo. It talks about jealousy over and attraction to a girl you think is so perfect, which I think fits Mikan's side of this perfectly.

Even without the AU I made up, I think DR3 adds a layer of tragicness to nanamiki I don't see explored a lot! Which is sad. I mean, getting brainwashed to send your girlfriend to her death is prime angst potential. I would love even that to be explored (despite how I'm usually not a big fan of the brainwashing video in general). I want more angsty, doomed nanamiki. Even now, most stories are one shots focusing fluff, or ones where they woobify Mikan, or ones where the dynamic is unbalanced between Mikan and Chiaki, and in those fanfics, they hardly ever explore Chiaki. Which is so sad to me. All the multichapter fics I've seen only have nanamiki as a side pairing, too. I love Nanamiki (it might be my favorite DR f/f pairing ever!) and I would love for people to explore more sides of it!

Sorry for the long ask. I just have So Many Nanamiki thoughts.

As someone who wasn't around the fandom in 2013-era, this is SUCH an interesting read. It aligns with a lot of what I've rediscovered searching through for old art, especially searching for Nanamiki works.

It shouldn't be so rare! I however, am endlessly suffering in desire for them, like its definitely one of the most popular ships that made it in the contest, but like, no one ever talks about, new content is barely made, and its just completely overshadowed

I don’t tend to do Post where I’m just talking but today I think I needed to talk about something The phenomena of guilt some people have over shipping

TLDR: Komamiki enjoy yours are the strongest soldiers of the fandom

In a server it seemed that a few people share this common feeling because God forbid you like something different than what’s popular

Then I mention a rare pair that I know a few people like had it as a discomfort to the point where I censored the word (using the Discord spoiler thing and btw it’s komamiki so ajshhs) especially for a friend who is in the server who I know it’s his discomfort

Despite that my friend notice and joined in the conversation, at first, it was joking around like haha your my enemy haha “you’re the reason I don’t talk about this ship” I said that jokingly but looking back this came off more like I had a grudge against him 😭lol

Then my friend explained I quote “ it’s problematic so not too surprising” (in a fandom like dr throwing that word around is not good at this point it’s lost its meaning and has so much nuance that it simply is a black-and-white)

Probably the fact that it was my friends discomfort clouded his judgment, so it makes sense that he was gonna be sort of bias, he explained why to him it was problematic and a lot of it was up to personal preference. The only moment I can see being a problem was when in one of the manga mikan is on top of Nagito (my friend says that she s/a him and I heavily disappeared. It did not seem like she was doing anything to him other than pointing needle at him, which you know now that’s just a different thing)

It also had to do with her habit of making her patient sick so they stay longer, as far as I remember in the game, it was definitely the opposite, and wanted to make sure that he was alive more than anything before she got infected with the disease. This goes with all the other patient characters, I think a pretty good example would be fuyuhiko who stayed at the hospital and came back and it’s not like he stayed for so long so it’s not like she was planning that.

Would Mikan normally go that extreme just for a classmate to stay sick and with her? No i don’t think so

I didn’t exactly bring up my opinions and points exactly I just kinda nodded, but didn’t necessarily agree with anything, there was another person involved in the conversation mainly asking a lot of questions like why they think it’s problematic ect. I guess it was hard for my friend to explain since he was in school and couldn’t write out his thoughts properly ( he explained it to me later that he has a hard time detecting tone on text, but like still wondering what made him think I wasn’t listening to what he was saying

(and I was starting to think he was getting uncomfortable since it seemed like he was made up to be the bully cuz I ship them) and he said at least twice that he wanted the conversation to stop, but it kept going ??? Hell people were even backing me up, saying what I was doing was harmless and just letting me be a silly goobre and hell I even found someone who ships it that as well  eventually he genuinely said “I give up 💔” which I found funny in a kind of “could you not be the dense!?” Way 

After a while, I decided to check up on friends since In his insta note it said he wasn’t feeling well. I decided to check up on him and he said he was fine and explained more of why he doesn’t like it. Just like I thought it had a lot to do with projection, which I completely understand. You’re going to project to your favorites a lot and seeing a contradiction of your personal hc we’re gonna hurt just a little if you do take them personally.

Now here’s something. I’m definitely going to ask him about; and his Twitter he had a post that was just “Komaeda is gay” over and over again and sure I drew him a little drawing to show good faith, but I wonder if it was done out of spite? not because of me, but because of hc(and in his own words the bi hc for Nagito makes him vomit)

I very much have an issue with that kind of language because obviously someone who hc him that is going to feel like shit and that’s literally not what you wanna do ever

There’s definitely a lot to sort out ? I’m in good terms and everything Hell love the guy/p but it’s those little things that I gotta get out of my system and the only way I know how is My talking about it in a social media he doesn’t have ajhsgsgs don’t wanna feel like I’m shit talking yk?

But ye that’s all just remember to respect other peoples ships and if you don’t like them, just say they’re not your cup of tea and go drink your cup of coffee ☕️

((Okay so Nagito fan here. I think shipping him with characters besides Hajime is totally legit. And that extends to female characters too, as I personally think pansexual/panromantic Nagito is a reasonable interpretation. But Nagito x Mikan? I know it looks cute on the surface, but there's way too much potential there for abuse. Like I don't want to agree with those bleak anons. But if it came down to a choice between that or him remaining alone for the rest of his life, I'd pick the latter.))

Guys look, I’m really tired. I understand that it has its faults, obviously. I just think it can work on a multiple number of ways and it’s adorable to me.

I’m well aware that on the surface it may not be healthy due to prior experiences and the past they have. They need work, they need help, and if given said help; their relationship could work. However, many can be said of incredibly popular ships in the fandom such as Fuyuhiko/Peko, Makoto/Mukuro, and Makoto/Kyoko. But they are still ranked the highest despite how they may seem unhealthy and fair share of problems. And if Nagito/Mikan can’t work because of toxicity traits, well you eliminated every other ship regarding her and I hope you keep that same energy for them.

And if this bothers you in the slightest enough and share the opinion of Nagito and Mikan should end up alone; there’s the door. Leave. Get out. Kick rocks.

At the end of the day, I ship it because I like it. Sue me :P

DR ships that i have like. quite consistent brain rot for been attacking me the last few weeks. I just find Ougoku so fucking cute and precious i love it so much and Naegiri has reared its head and im in a constant state of komahina+nami feels bc im writing a fic for them rn!!

Soulfriends!!Soulfriends too oh my God soulfriends like Destroys me it hit me so hard when I played SDR2 for the first time. I really loved Kaz (despite everything :')) so i did all his fte's and just. Oh my god they're so special to each other!!!!!!! I also hc Hajime as being Kaz's bi awakening lol (tho im p.sure thats a popular headcannon) bc it just makes too much sense. But also like. I just think they'd make such good and like special friends. IDK its weird i ship them but its more like the most intense BroTP i've ever had but i defo think Kaz goes through having a crush on Hajime for the longest time OHAEROGO I like to think Hajime would be very physically affectionate to him too? Funny you should mention Mikan ships tho bc actually! A mikan ship has been fuckin me up recently haha! I've suddenly become like. SO soft for hajime/mikan. I wasn't too into it when i played her route in SDR2 and it ended w/ marriage, but like. looking back on it. theres very few characters Hajime is like. actually soft and gentle w/. Chiaki is one and Mikan is another and just. oh ym god that makes me m e lt . like he cares for her so much? and he's so worried for her? and he just wanted to hold her and protect her!!!! and yes! she deserves it!!!!!!!!she deserves someone who'll love her properly!!!! truly!!! She's been through so much and Hajime being that safe space for her just. dont touch me. dont look at me. I genuine think he'd be SO protective of her. and patient. and she wont know what to do bc she's never had that before and it'd be so scary for her but he'd help her through it all ARGH!!!! Not to reference another SU song but. god. dont listen to Found while imagingn Hajime singing it to her. dont do it. oh ym god. AND ALSO their like. I'm also of the intense opinion that Mikan and Nagito do Not and Will not ever get on. Only because they're just. simultaneously too similar and too different. Like they're SO similar but they go about it in such different ways that i just think they'll never be able to fully understand each other so just cannot get along DESPITE having so much in common. like even before junko but ESPECIALLY after Junko. Also because its fucking hilarious to imagine. like its so funny. I think they should be allowed to hate each other actually. it'll probably be good for them.

I also. ofc. love the classics. I love Bandaid. its probably my main mikan ship tbh even tho i've become so fond of hajime/mikan. I just think. Ibuki would be like so good to balance her out. Bc ofc mikan is SO reserved and self-concious and Ibuki couldnt be either of those things if she tried. opposites attract. Also Ibuki is like. So emotionally intelligent? Idk if people really give her credit for that but like. I think she'd be able to see where Mikan's true limits are and not force her past them, but be able to push her just far enough that she'd realise that like. it's okay to be yourself! its okay to say what you want! In that sense I think Mikan could probably grow as a character way more w/ Ibuki than w/ Hajime bc i think Hajime would treat her just too softly and not have the guts to push her in the ways she probably needs. Also i hc mikan as a hardcore lesbian so. Ya know OIGjoi

How I feel about this character: god i love him so much. i have so much affection for him. i see him and i smile bc hes just a little creecher, yknow? i love this kid who was forced to grow up too soon and struggles switching between mission life and school life, who has been viciously abused and lost hope in his life. he has put everyone else before himself every step of his life and doesnt know how to be selfish. missing 8 year old natsume who was free and untethered... he is quite genuinely a human version of a cat, im not even joking

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: just mikan. im a simple person lol

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: obviously with his bestie but also with other class b kids, with hotaru, with his family <3 i love him being loved and he rly truly is loved by so many people

My unpopular opinion about this character: idk if theres anything i can say that ive never said before. i like his bizarre sense of fashion ig. i think its a funny combination of emo/punk and popular kid/jock like hes so funny. wildcard...

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: i wish he'd been more selfish. i think his ending was fitting. its tragic but dying for the sake of someone else is classic natsume. my issue with his end is that he was brought back for mikan's sake. his life once again only has value for what he brings to someone else. he should have value just because. his demise makes sense to me. ironically, its him being brought back (for a subpar reason) that rubs me the wrong way. he should have been taught the lesson that he should live for himself too and if he'd been saved by someone who actually loved HIM then maybe that wouldve happened. and he should have punched persona, as ive already said lol. maybe narumi too, just for good measure

Favorite friendship for this character: ruka/luca! yes 100% they are in fact the best fictional friendship of all time, no debate. they appreciate each other so well and thoroughly and know each other better than anybody and it means the whole world to me. ruka promises he's never gonna leave his side and that he could never regret following him and natsume would burn the world the second it dared to hurt his best friend. they hold hands and share earbuds but never hug for some reason and i just love them so much.

Danganronpa Relationships, That people need to stop saying are "abusive" [<that is a SERIOUS term that shouldn't be thrown around]

Also, being squicked or triggered by a ship is completely valid, calling it abusive though is... not okay

Mondo/Chihiro: They were in a killing game, which is why what happened happened. In Ultra Development Plan both are happy, alive, and legit train together.

The majority of Victim/Blackened ships: Just decided to make an in general for this But: They were in a killing game. They were in a killing game. They were in a killing game. How many more times can I say it? Of course people are going to kill people in a killing game And in a non killing game setting [Or even in a canon Divergence au] they could be friends or GASP lovers

Fuyupeko: Fuyuhiko ACTIVELY tries to help Peko realise she is more then a tool. Saying this is "abusive" is misleading and also painting Fuyuhiko as if he'd take advantage of Peko

Sondham and Soudham [putting together, because the reasons are very similar]: I mostly see this as people blowing a ship war out of proportion. There is NOTHING wrong with either ship.

Kiyo/Any Woman: I've seen this argument multiple times and just,,, always Erks me. Yes, he was abused by a woman, this doesn't mean that he could never be with a woman/We dont know the exacts of what would trigger him. Him with Kirumi or Angie are fine ships [<most popular m/f ships with him that I see]. Very very very tired of seeing this argument. (This is like saying because Mikan was abused by a woman that all her/other woman is abusive)

Angie/Tenko: Yeah, Tenko shows her dislike for her But 1. Peoples views on people change 2. Rivals to Lovers is a great trope

Ouma/Kaito: I cant put all my thoughts into a concise paragraph. There is a lot of others who are better explaining it then I. [<This is a ship I love a lot which also makes me tired explaining how it's a valid ship cause its tiring]

Maki/Kaito: Every time I hear this ship being called toxic or something I just go 👁👄👁 Nine Times out of Ten it's because they have certain hcs with Maki and the other 1/10 they completely misinterpret Kaito's character.

There's a lot of other ships that are 100% fine so what I have to say to the dangan fandom: You like those two characters together? Cute as hell. Just rember to properly tag, and those who dislike it remember to properly block the tags. Love you funky shippers :3

you can go read the rest of their interactions in the utdp if you like! this was my favourite, though. basically, imposter is so, so good for tsumiki i can’t believe it’s not the most popular ship for her.

for starters, in the above conversation, we can see that they’re very similar. the line, “up until now in my life, i’ve never gotten to experience this [having amicable experiences with classmates]” resonates with imposter, which is why he said her name like that. i honestly wonder if he was gonna tell tsumiki the truth in that moment, but then tsumiki “interrupts” by apologising. so he chooses not to, and then simply says he feels the same way. because imposter has never been able to be recognised as his true self, he never got any validation or love, and i also believe that’s why he chose to impersonate togami at hope’s peak of all people. so they’ve got this kinda similar trauma, i guess?

furthermore, imposter not only doesn’t get fed up with her antics, he genuinely respects her skills as a nurse. in the island mode, if you say you’re gonna climb a tree, he says he’ll go get tsumiki. when he’s faced with yamada, he goes and asks tsumiki for help (which i’ll GET to) . just about everyone in their cohort forgets that she’s actually the best health committee member in the country, but imposter remembers. and he appreciates her skills. it’s so sweet.

now their scene with yamada. the actual subtance is not all that relevant because what was super good imo was that at the end, once they’ve given yamada his lecture, yamada says “that was great... it was like being lectured by one person”. they have this AMAZING canon chemistry and work so well together. they’re the fucking best.

canon will always be king and so my heart will probably always belong to mitworai and i like ishimposter a LOT as well, but twomiki has such a special place in my heart. it’s my fav ship for both of them and my fav ship after ishimondo. i wish it were more popular.

Characters possible for ships:

Nagito - in case anyone wants popular ships or just really appreciates this ship (like me lol but I love others too don’t worry I’m naming more)

Mikan - she deserves some proper love but it’s also possible you think she should go for boys less traumatized or dislike the ship in general no problem!

Gundham - he has epic interactions along with some extremely cute ones with Hajime but Izuru can certainly work with him as well

Nekomaru - DIDNT SEE THAT COMING DID’YA. It has a lot of potential and figured I’d put it out as an option cause it’s pretty cute

Kazuichi - Hes actually a good guy once you get past the Sonia obsession and it is possible he can stop being creepy with her and get someone actually like him

Sonia - I just think she’d be a nice person for them to be with

Chiaki - I have no problems with this ship but just the people who get involved can be the best people I’ve met or pretty toxic and I’m pretty drained from the people demanding her be waifu but I also can’t deny she has a lot of potential with the two boys

When a character is chosen as the ship, Hajime will be dating them while with Izuru it isn’t official but they sure as hell may as well be is how they’ll appear because Izuru still has some emotional problems but is actually a good person here

tbh i hate engaging with f/f fan content most of the time bc its usually dumb shit idc about. m/m gets so much more room to be different things and have like. complicated dynamics and shit AND its gay. even if im not attracted to men i much rather read about two of them than a man and a woman most of the time bc hets go against nature [citation: that iconic post about how long men vs how women last in sex proving that homosexuality is what god intended]

but To Be Fair women in a lotta source material (read: shit written by men, which is a lot) are not written well and in a good way that makes me inch rested in them and men are written with so much more depth and interest than women in so much media. and especially less so in their relationships to other women. i put a lot of stock in the source material for shit. so i find myself not caring about many f/f ships because theres rarely a dynamic that has potential so everything is just. pure fan stuff or ooc or whatever. combined with the whole weird uwu culture around f/f making anything that exists not palatable to me. [see: my ao3 f/f bingo chart lmfao] whereas men and their relationship to other men get a lot of room to have nuance. BUT stuff written by women are so often notably better like even making het good. see: beastars, and dorohedoro (from what i hear about it) extra postulating about danganronpa under cut

thinking specifically abt danganronpa here in this post bc current hyper fixation lol. thats why im so into komahina bc theyre both actually interesting characters with a complicated relationship and i love conflict and that shit. but its very popular and theres a lot of content so its also like... availability statistic or w/e and i actually have an opportunity to be picky with content rather than eating any scraps i can find. theres v little (good) f/f bait in dr imo and what there actually is is boring as hell to me and anything that COULD be interesting has little to go off of. dr1, sakuraoi v cute but thats mostly what it is... cute... ppl dont explore the dynamic.  celesgiri seems cool but has little to go off of. dr2, whatever mahiru/hiyokos ship name is idk v straightforward and not too inch resting. ibuki is perfect girl love material but nothing with her feels right or interesting. JUNKO/MIKAN GOOD but everyone is afraid to write that bc its fucked up lol. love tokomaru at least

im not a big v3 fan but it does have much better women at least LOLLL also i follow an artist who genderbends a lot of charas to be f/f and i loves it so fucking much it makes so many more ships palatable. het fuyupeko? disgosting. hate it. awful. put it in the garbage. f/f fuyupeko? oh my god. het saimatsu? meh ok sometimes appealing. f/f saimatsu? incredible. amazing. actually most f/f kaede ships r good she has some fat dyke vibes. and then already good m/m ships are equally good f/f, f!komahina is cool and its nice 2 have those character traits of theirs (being weird and fucked up) expressed in girls who usually do not get to be written that way. OK so just to preface i havent seen most free times and most of my impression came from joseph anderson’s playthrough sooo i might be biased but im definitely planning on rewatching at least v3 in its entirety with all of its ftesO i guess it’s best if i start chronological and lemme just say. SAKURA OOGAMI IS BEST GIRL

it’s easy to say that im weak for big stronk gal who can lift me easily. and there is /definitely/ that point.

this is gonna sound weird but i really like the level-headedness she brings to the trials. i wouldnt say she’s the smartest but she rounds up the whole cast in a way that keeps the trials from being too absurd and non-sensical. there are other characters that also do this but seeing it come from her makes me happy somehow? maybe it’s because she also balances asahina in that sense and also that she’s the fourth trial stronk person who’s the most level headed compared to gonta and nekomaru. not saying those two are bad either, they’re great characters in their own right but i feel like their function is more on the side of entertaining rather than weighing in on the discussion. i especially think nekomaru’s whole thing with shitting is funny and it’s kinda a shame that sdr2 cut him from trials starting from the third.

speaking of sakura, yes i ship her with hina. no, duh. they’re good together. but i was also kinda touched when she talked about kenshiro. idk, sakura has two strong beefy hands and she can hold her girlfriend and boyfriend at the same time ok.(pretty sure kenshiro appears in udg but i havent experienced that game outside of seeing a few cutscenes so i wouldnt know)

also the fact that we get a callback to her in the strawberry house was. idk if i should say cool or if it was funny but it was something. and yep, her death was the saddest out of the fourth trials the games had. nekomaru’s death was more respectful for me and i felt more sad about gonta during his trial than his death. it’s more gruesome than sad, to be honest.(and ok the smoothskin joe gives to sakura is also kinda funny)

with other dr1 characters i like most of them are usually because of my friends’ (who got into dr years before i did) influence like kyoko and celeste. there are some others i laugh at but it’s more because of the inside jokes of the streamer i was watching.

ok so with sdr2 komaeda is easily one of the top. but tbh the reason why it is is bc a few years ago i read this (illegally distributed) doujin that had written his character really well. tbh i feel kinda bad now knowing that the doujinka stopped circulating their doujin bc of that and some of the subject matter of their doujin is… a bit too much for me. but the ones that are good are really good and when i came into canon i was like, “oh, this is the fingers in ass guy who got memed to death" nowadays, i see him more as pickle nagito though. i am interested in seeing how his character can be… well, not redeemed but i want to see him heal. whiiich might never happen in canon bc his hope bagel personality is too infamous now.

also i know everyone hcs nagito’s voice as smth along the lines of nico’s voice or john’s voice but like consider jph’s stoner voice. please. it’s so fucking funny with the fucking pickle komaeda meme. maybe it’s bc although im not obsessed with hope or despair, i related to his way of seeing karma. 

after experiencing sdr2 thoough, lemme just say that johnny yong bosch did a great job voicing hajimmy hinata. like im not even kidding i really like that voice and if i was ursula i would steal that voice for my own use. buutt i cant do that. unlike komaeda, i’m pretty indifferent to his character arc and enjoy his one on one interactions with the characters more and how he reacts to the immediate events that happened over the course of sdr2.

soo yeah komaeda and hinata are literally opposites in my head, ain’t much of a surprise that i ship them i guess. but!! i like a lot of the gals in sdr2 surprisingly.

like, ok. maybe i’m biased but the designs for the gals in sdr2 are so goddamn adorable. like okay there’s the obvious ones like chiaki and sonia. and i don’t know why sonia’s personality is so goddamn adorable. like not in the “awww you’re so fucking uwu” type of way but more in the sense that she’s funny? it feels like even through all her weirdness that she still manages to make genuine connections with the characters.

with peko, it’s hard to dislike her considering her whole arc with the second trial. of course liking her goes in hand with liking fuyuhiko’s character too but i just like.. how stoic she sounds??? it’s adorable????? and with mikan yeah she kinda went… off in the third trial but consider???? her voice when she snaps was so goddamn hot?????????????? sdr2 has the best voice acting cant change my mind.

and i don’t know why, gundham is so goddamn funny and if i wanna show how absurd sdr2 can get i show my friends gundham’s scenes. he’s fucking funny, ok. and alongside nekomaru i can respect his death in a way. i goddamn saluted when i first watched his execution (with the full context of the trial) because i just really liked the conviction he carried with his murder.

miu’s one of the funniest character ever!! i swear. i know some people look at the sex jokes and go, “ugh” but im a manchild so i ended up enjoying her moments so much. though i’m kinda a bit meh on the fanservice side, i like how she’s one of the characters who sticks out more. in my language we call her “pentolan” i guess.

tenko’s kinda an easy character for me to like considering… stronk lady. would love for her to carry me. the misandry can get a bit too much but she’s also a pretty funny and genuine character on top of that so she came out with me liking her.

kaede and tsumugi are characters i grew to /love/ after i thought about them a lot.

with kaede, the point i started to relate to her… was with her thirst with girls. i swear im not joking. but. okay. i like her position as the protag and all her ideals. one thing i was surprised that didn’t manage to make me relate to her was her passion for piano considering i’ve also studied it for like, around 12 years. maybe it’s because i kinda fell out of it around 2 years ago because reasons. despite of that though, i like how assertive she was in her time as the protag. and her execution was goddamn beautiful.

tsumugi, though, i wouldn’t grow to love as much if it weren’t for 郁十‘s works. like. please. go watch all of their videos it’s all so good. i think someone else talked about this, but tsumugi’s position as the mastermind feels a lot more “human” than what we got with junko enoshima. compared to kaede, i feel like we could’ve gotten so much more with her as a villain and i just want to see more of her outside of her “plain bread” facade.

it might also be due to my own hcs for them so they’re on my head a lot more than most of the other v3 characters are. even more than my two actual favorites!!

ok, ok. kochiki and shuichi are definitely my favorites of the bunch. like, the toppest tiers of fav actually. it’s kinda hard to talk about these two separately tbh. maybe it’s because before danganronpa, my previous otp in my previous fandom had these two’s dynamics as well. and like, there’s a certain pairing to a fandom i haven’t caught up to in years who also have a detective/phantom thief dynamic. aaand also persona 5 and that one pairing that i don’t have to name for people to know which is my otp.

yeah i’m a sucker for these types of characters. it’s kinda typical that they’d be popular in the fandom. which i’ll  h a p p i l y  eat up.

soo it’s kinda easy to start with kochiki. i think i don’t have to go into every minute detail and go all meta on why i like him as a character because a lot of people have articulated better on why his character works. he’s fun to watch when interacting with other characters and figuring out his motivation put my brain on work. i’ll say this though, i actually enjoy kokichi better when he’s not being woobified. he’s a rat through and through and i will enjoy this possum boi for that.

and now mr. detective himself. so i loved his character at first. didn’t love him more than kochiki but. liked his arc, he was a fun protag. then the fan content came and he became very moe in my eyes so i guess it’s easier to say that i uh, like fancontent of shuichi better but i like canon kokichi better. and also how is it that the majority of ousai e-rated works has shuichi as a top SHUICHI IS NOT A TOP um yeah anyway. i feel like out of all the main characters he’d be a pretty nice person to hang out with.

also his eyelashes are nice. im totally not embarrassed while typing this out. im literally physically restraining myself from typing out more so i can not embarrass myself even further.
