I recently started watching The Handmaid's Tale on Hulu (the last episode I watched was S2 ep 7) and I'm curious what the general consensus is on Luke & June vs Nick & June bc I really like Nick for June and Luke doesn't seem terrible at all. Still, that one flashback scene where he reassures June that they should stay together even though they started their relationship while he was still married to another woman, "she doesn’t matter because we’re going to get married. I’m going to make you happy." gave me the ick.

Like, you married Annie, too and you still cheated on her so how is that at all reassuring? I'm still waiting for a flashback that shows what Annie and Luke's relationship was like bc I have absolutely no clue why he cheated on her. I can understand why June technically cheated on Luke with Nick which was bc she was trapped in a terrible system where she was abused and felt unloved and unwanted and she was separated from her loved ones and she just wanted to feel something. So far I haven't seen any dialogue from Luke saying anything about what his marriage with Annie was like but if I had to guess, based on the episode where Annie stalked June and accused her of "stealing her husband" as if he's not also a human being capable of making his own choices, maybe they had differing views/ideas on what they wanted out of marriage, or he fell out of love with her, or he cheated just to cheat like a lot of douchebag guys do.

And yes, I am aware that June is also in the wrong for knowingly going after a married man, she isn't innocent in this either. She did seem to consider ending the relationship after Annie confronted her (which, why did it take his ex confronting you for you to consider not getting with a married man? Did Moira not give you any criticism for it? She seems like the type who would bc real friends tell you when you did sth wrong and they hold you accountable but judging by how they act around each other Moira seems very supportive of their relationship) whereas Luke didn't seem to think there was anything wrong with staying with the woman he started a relationship with while he was still taken at any point in time but that means nothing since she did end up staying with him despite that.

Sorry for how long this is, I originally meant for this to be shorter lol I'll put a Keep Reading tab in case ppl just want the tl;dr at the top. So, with all this considered I'm wondering if everyone else that enjoys this show wants June to end up with Nick or stay with Luke and which one is supported by the majority of people?

my opinion's probably a cold take. but i'm sure i'd be more upset about the siuan thing if 1) i'd already read the books (and was more attached to her character) and/or 2) there weren't other major black characters in the show. but i haven't read all the books (i'm still reading the first one), and there Are other major black characters in the show. so it's sad, but i'm not shaken up about it

Didn't think the 1989 version of The Woman In Black would be scarier than the one with Dan Radcliffe in it

I was Wrong flkjdsafkldsja, but I'm delighted to have been wrong. I had missed getting scared with more practical effects/careful timing of things in the background of shots appearing and disappearing, and this one scratches that itch well.

#text post #also fun seeing how differently they interpreted the characters and how they act #personally i'm realising that the Dan version was sort of. Americanised? Which is probably something I should have realised at first watch #but it only hits now when it's like. how to explain #the casts of both versions are both amazing let's preface with that #but. the Dan version felt very Cinematic. I got scared but was also very aware I was watching An Movie during it #(it got colour-graded quite blue which isn't necessarily a bad thing but it does register in my head as Peak Cinematic for the current time #the version of the characters in this 89 version feel slightly more real? accurate to the culture they come from?#like. there's an American Openness between the ones in the Dan version #they're too open to share and hand out compliments and comments like candy they have too much of #everyone is Nice in a way that feels mildly unrealistic #and when they are mad at each other there's tension but a tension #that to me at least you don't worry abt much bc it just feels almost Already Resolved #and it does sort of just drop off and wind up that way tbh #tho I admit it's been a bit since I read the original story so my apologies if I'm misremembering that it did the same in the book #but I could swear there was more that bit of tension there #anyway it isn't that the 89 characters are all mean but they feel Actually British for lack of better words #they have moments of kindness and do have a general sense of like. yeah they care for their community but also they're getting on w/themsel #and their business and not lingering on the interactions #They're kind but not nice and they just. get on with things which is very nice #and feels more in line with the time period to me/what I expect out of a story like this #anyway speaking of Dan found out the guy playing Arthur in this also played the dad in the gross wizard franchise #which wasn't something I expected to see lol #this is my long barely an essay no one asked for and your sign to go watch the 89 version asap #it's on YT for free which is where I'm watching it so genuinely if anyone want link. mmmm I disagree. but I can see that this is a nuanced conversation. it seems like the core issue here is with saying "if you used to read a lot, you were dissociating," which is a broad generalization to make.

#felt like saying something because I WAS dissociating #and that's not a bad thing! it's neutral #recognizing dissociation is not automatically pathologizing it. bc dissociation is not inherently bad!#dissociation is simply a tool the body uses to separate itself from what it can't handle.#tbh reading was not always joyful. it was not always out of curiosity or intellect. sometimes it was just a NEED.#I would spend hours glued to books and then the hours when I wasn't reading I was in a daze thinking about the books #I would be sitting at the dinner table trying to snap out of my haze but I couldn't. I was in a cloud.#it concerned my mother lol. she didn't let me read certain immersive series until I was older bc she knew I got sucked into them so deeply #apparently I needed it

I've listened to 70% of tsh audiobook and wow, I forgot that the funnel part of the book was so excruciatingly boring

#the pyre #when I read tsh for the first time I finished it in like. 2 days #and on the second day I was so eager to get to the end that I skimmed the parts about the funeral and Bunny's family #and felt bad bc it didn't feel right to give a book 5 stars when I wasn't completely focused on the second half of the book #but now that I'm paying attention I did the right thing by skipping #bc audiobooks are usually longer than the time it takes for me to read a book #which means that this part of the book just drags on and on

something that strikes me about pw's 'gray' is just how. religious it is. it's very religious. religion plays such a subtle, omnipresent role in it. because of course it does.
