The redacting of certain place names (—shire, — Street) is accurate to lots of old novels, where you will see it from time to time. I think it was a deliberate omission to avoid libel accusations if they accidentally invoked somewhere or someone real, or to also avoid confusing people if it contradicted real life. I used it here both to mimic the style, and also because that way didn't have to pick streets or regions lol.

The 'cut direct' was a social nuke and Kaz has balls of steel for using it on an older man who is his social superior 💀 if you very deliberately stared at and then blanked a previous acquaintance who had greeted you, it severed a relationship or acquaintance forever and could also make people turn on the person being cut. Pekka could have challenged him to a duel for it, but sensibly I think he saw the lapse in logic in giving a pistol to a soldier who holds you responsible for his brother's death and letting him shoot at you

A reticule is one of those dumb tiny handbags that regency ladies had

Governesses were in a uniquely vulnerable position. Not genteel enough for the family while not technically a servant, they tended to be isolated. While they were ofc not comparable to what Inej canonically goes through, many were abused by the families they worked for, rivalled the mothers for their children's affection, and some were harassed and abused by husbands or male visitors. There's a reason Jane Fairfax does not want to be one in Emma.

The navy lists are a publication that, unsurprisingly, list all the men, their ranks, and their ships currently trundling around on campaign. Kaz checks them to see who is still alive and to backseat drive campaigns (what's new!) and Wylan waits on tenterhooks for him to find Jesper. Which he always does because he was already looking for him.

Married couples did not tend to call one another by their given names, at least not in company; Nina and Matthias do it because they have a fond disrespect for one another. Or Nina does anyway and it's rubbed off on Matthias.

Although Kaz and Inej are comparatively very young, twenty six is pushing it for the 'marriageability' of young women; Anne Elliot was twenty seven and was considered to have lost the 'bloom' of her youth, so she is being bourne down upon a bit.

The money concerns in Persuasion— landed gentry losing money and soldiers becoming 'new' money in the war via prize money, but still being looked down upon by the old nobility— are kinda reflected through Kaz and Jesper.

(to be so honest I do not quite understand how the regency economy worked but I figured that like, no one else reading this does either, unless ur a regency specialist. if you are, sorry. how's academia?)

I think we're actually not quite yet at the peak of the 'scandal sheet' Bridgerton-Lady-Whistledown craze, but I couldn't possibly deprive Kaz and Inej of their fishmarket wife gossip habit in any universe.

I think the circumstances of Kaz and Jordie having been minor landed gentry having to join the navy out of necessity may be a bit of a stretch but... Well I had to think of something to replicate Kaz's backstory with. The easier solution would have been for them to marry rich but I can see Jordie thinking that trying to marry Kaz 'Cut Direct' Rietveld off to a Duchess might be a bit tough

A trousseau was the collection of clothes that women bought before they were married; it was an expected thing, to send brides off with new clothes. Nina and Mrs Ghafa (and Jesper) are a lot more interested in this than poor Inej is lol.

The made up house names are entirely inside jokes with myself. Geldings references horses but is actually a play on the Geldstraat, Crawley means 'clearing frequented by crows', Stavewell is a play on the Stave where Tante Heleen and the Menagerie are, and I think Trasselwood is fairly obvious lol.

Cyberchase Character Discussion (for your local Cyberchase trivia quiz) - #2: Matt

I made a post while back talking about archiving material from the Cyberchase website, including the now-removed character bios. I made a post about Inez, intending it to be the first in a series, and then I put it aside. Now I'm getting back to it.

#2: Matt

So, let's start with his character bio in "Meet the Cybersquad". This was released in 2001, before the series started airing in 2002. I don't know how much of this is still canon, given how much time has passed.

We learn that Matt, like Jackie, is 11 years old. He is presented as Cyber-detective, which is interesting. All of the kids engage in problem-solving. I never really thought Matt was into detective stuff specifically. He is big on the use of his yo-yo when thinking, and he does come prepared with tools in his backpack.

His favorite color is green, which makes sense, as he wears a green turtleneck in almost every episode. He enjoys pizza and pancakes. He enjoys Brian Jacques's "Redwall" books, so we know he isn't squeamish. I love that his favorite is "anything by Will Smith". This bio really is a product of its time. His favorite movie is "Star Wars". He might be referring to "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope" back when it was titled just "Star Wars", or he could be referring to the franchise as a whole. I wonder if he canonically liked "The Phantom Menace", which would have been the only movie from the Star Wars prequel trilogy out at the time.

His listed pet peeve is waiting (for anything). That part is definitely still canon, though he has gotten less impulsive and more patient as the series has progressed.

He also has a ton of pets, and this isn't even counting any livestock his family owns on the farm. He has:

His favorite line, as listed here is "OK, what do we know?". I thought that was actually one of Jackie's common lines, right next to "Let's get organized". I would have used "Touchdown!" here. It also talks about him being interested in magic. I don't remember that interest coming up, even in the Shari Spotter episodes. He's great at skateboarding, yo-yo tricks, milking cows, and trying new things.

He can also be ruthless, like that time he threatened to destroy The Hacker's Grim Wreaker ship.

We can talk about his impulsiveness and recklessness, like in Season 2 Episode 8: "Whale of a Tale". He saw a steam-filled death pit, where he couldn't see the other side, and tried to jump over it. He thought it was only one meter, due to a partially-obscured sign.

It wasn't one meter.

This is not good! This is not good at all!

Off topic, I love how expressive they made Inez in this episode.

And of course, he wants to try again.

He was also at the center of the Cybersquad's disastrous attempt to promote Motherboard's re-election campaign against The Hacker in Season 2 Episode 4 "True Colors". He accused The Hacker of lying about his good deeds without any proof, and it turned out that The Hacker was telling the truth about them after all. Matt's efforts to bring up The Hacker's prior crimes were also seen as mud-slinging.

I'm not here to bash him as a character. I like Matt, flaws and all. He's a member of the Cybersquad. All three of these actual children have been in way over their heads since the start.

Even in these two instances, the show is careful to show that he learns his lesson. In the incident with "Whale of a Tale", he is one who has Glowla re-check her work and catch her addition mistake when she is computing Spout's new shutdown code.

In the incident with "True Colors", Matt admits that he was wrong in his emotional accusation against The Hacker. Then, he corners The Hacker with the question about curing the virus, which forces The Hacker to lie about the cure. Finally, the Cybersquad as a whole catches The Hacker in the lie about the triangle-based cure. I really need to do a full post on that episode, as it was brilliant.

Let's look at something else. Matt is quite strong. Here he is in Season 2 Episode 6 "Mother's Day" with Inez standing on his head, while Digit stands on Inez's head.

And here's Matt effortlessly lifting the "Good Vibration" artifact, which is bigger than him, from Season 2 Episode 9 "Double Trouble". Even Jackie and Inez are fleeing from his power. Okay, so they were probably fleeing from The Hacker, who was off-screen, but still.

What else can we say about Matt? Well, he was originally going to be called Kyle, who had a different haircut and smaller feet. Apparently, Kyle wasn't considered a good name for a farm boy.

No disrespect to whoever made Kyle, but I prefer Matt's final design. We have the Who's Who document. It does give us a few nire pieces of information. For example, he loves jokes and puns, which I don't remember coming up much in the show. It also confirms that his favorite cybersite is Radopolis.

I swear that I read some source that claimed he was the "leader" of the Cybersquad. However, I cannot find it now. I didn't think this team structure had a true leader, since all the kids here equal partners.

That's about all I can think to say about him for now.

EDIT: I forgot that Matt had a bio on the Nelvana website as well. I thought only Jackie got one, since I found one for her. I never found one for Inez, Dr. Marbles, Motherboard, The Hacker, Buzz, or Delete. It doesn't help that they used a picture of Jackie on Matt's bio.

I like the line about him inventing trial and error. If he can collect royalties off that, then he is set for life. It talks about his hands-on learning style, which was a major point in the episode "Problem Solving in Sangri-la". This bio emphasizes him charging forward without a plan, which is a well-known character flaw.

I'm so kdhdkdjdkd jazzed about the fjorester proposal !!!! But something that popped up pretty immediately that baffled me was these like... cope posts i guess? Of how "beau and jester should cheat leaving their partners for eachother and how dw guys marriage is just going to spice up the inevitable affair" and it's not even treated as a joke and Im just confused? Like i got into cr2 by the time it was over with so idk what it was like waiting for releases, but why after all this time do people hold on as much as they do? Do they like the story or not?

So I will be totally honest: I am not above checking the blogs of those I know hold terrible opinions, for a number of reasons both reasonable (keeping an eye out for potential harassment; inspiration for meta; my genuine enjoyment of analyzing fandom trends) and less so (schadenfreude and sending DMs that say Can You Believe This Idiot) but I actually have not seen this! To be clear, I would not be surprised it was out there - heaven knows this was a refrain during late Campaign 2 and in the leadup to the two-shot - but I thought that most people finally gave up in late 2022 after the two-shot made it clear the existing relationships are still very much in place. Granted I, as always, rarely go on Twitter.

Anyway. I think some of it is just that people whose enjoyment of works hinges on their ships becoming canon, rather than that being one of many facets to their fandom, also tend to not know when to give up just generally (you can look around this website and still find people hopping mad and/or pining for resolution regarding shows that ended before Campaign 2 even started). I think most of them did finally give up and leave, which is probably healthier for both them and the fandom, but there will probably be a dwindling number of holdouts who will gasp out on their deathbed fifty years hence "Beau and Jester should have been together" to a politely confused hospice nurse.

To actually answer your question, no, they do not like the story. I know I've been very hard on people who seem to only be able to enjoy fiction through a lens of either shipping or intense projection of the self onto existing characters, but in my defense, I'm right. This is a whole separate post, which to be honest I've kind of already made several times, but the usual complaint about the Campaign 2 noncanon ships (echoed in the complaints about Campaign 3 primarily by those who do like the canon ships thereof) was that they would have happened and been flawless and perfect but for that Pesky Plot, ie, the story. Unless the entire point of a story is a romance (eg: the genre that is cleverly titled "Romance") romance is always optional.

I also think, to be honest, Campaign 2 attracted people who were patient. This is a good thing! I think that, for example, people who are not entirely feeling Campaign 2 13 episodes in are valid, because I was similarly enjoying myself but not entirely won over by the plot yet, and it was only a combination of that patience and the burgeoning character dynamics that kept me going (plus the fact that watching week to week is a lower commitment than a binge). Granted I think if you fully give up at that point you are weak and will not survive the winter and should probably go watch Michael Bay movies or Bluey, but that's a separate point. Anyway. Some people are patient beyond a point where it is rewarding or even neutral and pass into a realm of showing up to the Story That Has Fjorester and Beauyasha In It muttering "I hope this doesn't have any fucking Fjorester and Beauyasha". I don't know how to help them, nor do I particularly want to, but I do know that not going on Twitter has been super helpful.

One final note: again, haven't seen the thing you mention in your ask yet in relation to this one-shot and not for lack of poking around Tumblr at least; but I have seen people who were deeply bitter about Campaign 2 but are still around for Campaign 3, though not a ton, and this was also frankly true of people who loved Campaign 1 and have not really cared since but still stick around. There's a weird zombie problem in the fandom; you get people who are very invested in being a fan of Critical Role and can't seem to leave, but haven't actually been happy for literal years, either because they were ultimately only fans of Vox Machina, or the Mighty Nein, or a specific ship within that. It is actually something I try to be cognizant of because I was very cautious about becoming that during the stretch when I was more frustrated by Campaign 3 than I am now. I think, ultimately, it's a conflation of one's fandom with one's external identity and I don't know how that happens or how to fix it but that might also be a factor: people who really don't like the show and haven't for years and are grasping at a thing they think would fix that and make them happy again, and refuse to admit it might be time to move on because that would mean they need to change their conception of themselves.

I think we need to have an honest discussion about shipping in the ILY fandom, especially as the story unveils relationship dynamics that go beyond platonic moving forward.

We cannot let the past repeat itself.

When the comic started, it was advertised as a romance by Webtoons, but Quimchee had always planned and proposed a mature drama. Around that time, they also began monetizing the platform so they asked her to change some of her dark ideas to fit the requirements advertisers might have pushed for initially.

It was an uncertain time with regards to what was or wasn't allowed.

[The comic was supposed to ramp up with those dark themes around the formal arc and it was going to places that would have been triggering to many readers.]

The editors pushed and sold the concept for a love triangle that was never intended because they probably believed this formula would attract more readers and it did.

Unfortunately, with it came all the bad things, too.

This strategy fostered hostility within the fan base and pressured Quimchee to create content to validate it.

Things got so heated in the fandom that we ended with harassment of not only readers but also of Quimchee—to the point that she understandably withdrew from engaging with the public.

[All while going through health issues and personal struggles, too.]

It was a very dark time in the ILY fandom and many people left the communities that had been built because of it. There were hiatuses, uncertainty, and a lot of things withheld from us due to Webtoons' abysmal communication on behalf of the series' they featured.

But the core problem was that unforgettable toxicity and ship war.

There were people who believed their desires were more important than the well being of a real person and that their vitriol was justified because things didn’t go their way.

They believed Quimchee deserved punishment for it.

There wasn't much outrage directed at Webtoons for their false advertisement or for pressuring her to tweak aspects of the story initially to fit their romance marketing agenda. Why?

Because what Webtoons wanted aligned with their desire and it was easier to pretend that Quimchee was a liar about her plot than admit they were misled by the platform, but most importantly, that their interpretation of the story was always flawed.

Quimchee was harassed constantly across multiple social media accounts and they justified their behavior with logic such as "if she created Character X first, then it means they're the lead" when she had constantly stated that there were three main leads in ILY who were equally important to the whole story.

To accept Quimchee's words would break down their arguments and defy the ideas they had created themselves.

They even believed she "sold herself out by not staying true" to a concept she had come up with in high school. They expected the loose and chaotic musings of a young girl to be the version of ILY we got despite her claims otherwise.

[What's funny is that their idea of what the original was is completely wrong and there is proof of it in all her old drawings and drafts.]

They simply refused to accept reality, substituted their own, and went on a campaign of hatred against her because of it.

Now we're here and the drama begins to show hints of romance through heavy, dark themes, and we're seeing that same deranged toxicity trying to make a comeback in the communities we have left.

Don't feed trolls. Don't give them what they want: attention.

To those who remain readers, I hope you can enjoy the story despite the romantic undertones. If you're unhappy, make fan works. If you're dissatisfied to the point you think harassing others and the creator is justified, then please check yourself and stop. Move on. There are a lot of stories waiting for you to enjoy.

To those who feel like they’ve “won” because of how the canon is playing out—stop it. You’re also part of the problem.

That useless “us vs them” mentality is what got us so far gone last time. That whole ‘we won’ or ‘we’re morally superior’ makes you just as problematic as the people who drove fans and Quimchee away years ago. Please check yourself and stop.

You’re not creating a healthy environment by being that way.

Finally, at the end of the day, everyone behind the computer screen is a person. You should never hurt real people, especially over fiction.

Three Ships:

So I assume this is like favorites? Okay, I'll try to do separate fandoms as well to keep it interesting and I'll try and make it less common ships, not exactly rare ships per se because like... I am very shy and anxiety prone so truthfully iunno what's rare and not because I don't engage a lot.

Thunderweave (Gale/Rolan) : I really like this one, even more since my fiancee and I RPed it with the idea of transmasc Rolan. It's really kind of interesting and also Rolan deserves a better fellow wizard than Lorroakan and I think Gale is a great fellow wizard being both talented, secure in his abilities, but also willing to see the potential and power in another person. Also I super identify with Rolan and my fiancee does a really good really convincing Gale for RP and cosplay. Kabru/Mithrun: I initially preferred Kabru/Laios, which I still really like honestly, but I read a longer post about Mithrun's disabilities and his trauma and how Kabru treats him like a person when most people don't and like as a heavily traumatized person who became suddenly and severely disabled as a result, I really really relate and hope that my partners will show me that same level of care when they are able (distance has been the main reason why not, my mom has mainly been the one taking care of me since I became disabled so I don't really know what my partners will do in person because one lives far away and one has been called away on family issues since before this became a major issue) Thraina (Thrall/Jaina) : This is the only hetero ship I consistently come back to. I usually prefer Sylvanas/Jaina, but realistically I don't want to put that one here for only one reason. Sylvanas/Jaina has a lot of basis in what it could be (No one at Blizzard who has been there consistently through their entire development is talented enough to have made it work so it's all theoretical and based on what much better unpaid fanfiction writers decide). Thraina, meanwhile was unintentionally somehow written as one of the most equitable, healtyh, equal, and level relationships in all of WoW and it wasn't even canon...mainly because Metzen is a weird creepy misogynist (one of the main reasons I actually mainly write Aggra/Jaina as a ship actually, because both deserve better and are, in theory, better than that bag of derivative Marvel obsessed dicks allows them to be) but anyway, it's just fascinating to me how the healthiest ship in WoW was axed, shut down, and denied despite how genuinely good it was. I could write essays on this, I *HAVE* written essays on this, but I'll spare you. First ship: Domon Kasshu/Chibodee Crockett (G Gundam) but also Meg Giry and Christine Daae (Phantom of the Opera) these were simultaneous, so honestly I had to put both.

That's a good point. I haven't really played any point-and-click games myself. I guess Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright both have point-and-click elements, but they fit more neatly into other genres.

I didn’t think the point-and-click genre had any analogue to RPG classes, but it is a lens that I haven’t really viewed Homestuck through up to now, since, like I said, I haven’t played any. Totally open to anyone else weighing in, though!

I’ve played a lot of tabletop RPGs, and it does seem like I let it seep into my admittedly tenuous understanding of LARPing. I did know it was live, but I was under the impression that you were still acting as a party in a campaign, working collaboratively.

I guess I didn’t think about who’d be playing your enemies. They can’t all be played by the DM unless she can mind-control people so I should have guessed it’d be party-vs-party - or augmented reality, which is what we got.

Yeah Davesprite says he’s supposed to be vague, so it’s definitely intentional on the part of Sburb, and not just when your sprite is a capricious jester. The implied reason is that solving Sburb’s riddles yourself is part of the game’s challenge.

It could serve multiple purposes, though. Vaugeness about Titles, specifically, could be so the Players can make their own judgements about what their Title means.

This mythology is ‘hyper-flexible’, and Players decide what form their enemies take - so maybe they also decide what form their Titles take, too. Maybe what the game is ‘tailoring’ itself to, here, is the Players’ own interpretations of its lore.

That's a good point - and Jade lives in a big empty island, so she has more Space than any of the other Players! That’s the sort of thing that may or may not be deliberate.

She still hasn't displayed any Space powers, though, of any flavor. Jade - who spent years as a pseudo-Seer - certainly seems to have a funny relationship with her Title.

That's true - although their Trollian handles, plus the spectrum of their colors, are arranged in the correct zodiac order, so there must be some in-universe meaning to it.

I'm pretty sure the purples are the highest of all. Plus, AG is apparently 'aristocracy', and, more intriguingly, Karkat is seen as ‘gutter blood’, despite his anonymity. The plot thickens.

Yup, GA is as Jadelike as they come. Maybe the game always assigns a Player as the Frog Temple’s custodian - which makes me wonder if GA has her own Bec, too. He’s still a huge question mark.

10. Do you work on multiple wips or stick to one fic at a time?

I wish I only wrote one fic at a time! I have so many. One shots, notes, multi-chapter WIPs, story collections... Haven't decided yet if it helps or hinders my creativity haha

16. Do you write by hand, on your phone, or on your laptop?

99% of the time, on my laptop. I will put notes in my phone, or jot down an idea to a friend on my phone. But anything longer - on my laptop!

22. Do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process?  How do you come up with titles?

...usually after. And titles are the absolute bane of my existence. I sit and wait for a title to hit me in the face more times than not! I try to pick something from a line or some theme or central topic.

38. What is your most self-indulgent posted story?

The Favor, without a doubt. My cheesy fake-dating Christmas fic? All indulgence. And I'm so eager to get back to there 'verse.

42. What’s your favorite title that you’ve come up with?

All's Fair in Love and Politics - my first fic, my first title, and the only time I had something in mind before writing. Though, the sequel title Love & Loathing on the Campaign Trail is up there. Plays on words/phrases/other titles are always fun.

56. Are there any fics that you would change or rewrite if given the chance?

Like Mother, Like Daughter. I've thought about rewriting it repeatedly. I had an idea in mind at the end that I scrapped, I felt I rushed it a little bit, and I just think I could do better.

72. What’s your favorite writing compliment you’ve gotten?

I actually just got one tonight that warmed my heart so much about a re-worked canon scene feeling natural with my added thoughts and feelings! I worked really hard on that scene and it was a lovely thing to read.

77. Why do you enjoy writing fanfiction?

Because I always, always, seem to attach myself to the lesser loved characters and tragic ships and I like giving them the happiness I wish they'd received. For the writing itself, I like the community I've found. I like reading other people's work and building rapport and in general, having fun!

So the first question: Do you think that sphere from the 12th episode (The Whispered one) could be the Raven Queen?

To what extent do you think the plot of the second season will follow that of the Critical Role?

And do you think we'll see the tribe of Air Ashari and the father of Vex and Vax?

SO TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS!!!

1. No, the sphere is not the Raven Queen, and I won’t tell you what it is to not spoil it because it’s part of a major arc, the final arc of the campaign in fact. Though, in a sense, they are related ;)))

2. So far, it follows the campaign pretty closely, save for exclusion of less important side missions and some DND based rules and interactions. So far it’s looking like the second season has the potential to follow the plot very closely. It will be following the Chroma Conclave arc, or at least part of it, of Campaign 1, and I for one, can’t wait to watch my beloveds f*ck up some dragons.

3. If they follow the campaign, we’ll definitely see the Air Ashari, and Vex and Vax’s father, Syldor. Syldor might not show up right away depending on how they decide to pace it.

4. Keyleth’s Aramenté is essentially her trials and training in order to become the leader of the Air Ashari, the Voice of the Tempest. In addition to her education that she mentions in passing, she must complete trials given to her by each tribe of the Ashari: Fire, Water, Earth, and of course, Air. I don’t know how much we’ll see of it because in the campaign, by the time we get to the Chroma Conclave arc, she’s already completed most of it, along with her friends.

5. Keyleth rejecting Vax is such a turning point for both of their characters. I can’t wait to see how they go into their relationship further and all that good juicy juicy angst.

6. I LOVE all the ships in the show. Canon or otherwise. One of the few fandoms I’ve been in that I find myself multishipping in. One of my favorite parts of the relationships in the campaign is that they are not the forefront or focus, though they are still important parts of the characters. The way they bloom and evolve are quite beautiful and lovely.

I TOTALLY recommend watching Campaign 1 if you get the chance. I personally didn’t start at the beginning, I started after the Briarwoods/Whitestone arc, and I think it was okay to miss a hefty part of the early campaign. It’s long and a large amount of content, but I love it dearly, no matter how late to the party I was.

BACKGROUND:

Shiv is going to be largely canon up to the end of current Succession canon. I’m going to do a canon write-up soon on a full biography page, but the last period of her life has been fraught with manipulation and betrayal. Her “marriage” to Tom Wambsgans was on the ropes, as well as her relationships with her father Logan & mother Caroline, though she’d finally come back together to work with her brothers, Kendall and Roman.

Full disclosure, she isn’t the greatest person; she was raised to treat most of life like a competition or battle, striving to squeeze the most benefit for herself out of situation. She was raised incredibly rich, with Waystar Royco & its billions — summer palaces in the Hamptons and a $20 million divorce settlement between her parents — and she hasn’t thusly got a lot of perspective on the struggles of people.  

And if she thinks it will benefit her, Siobhan can (like most of her family) be incredibly ruthless. On one occasion she published a scathing opening letter with many details of the “issues” she saw in the life of her older-brother-then-rival, Kendall.

WEAPONS / POWERS / ABILITIES / SKILLS

The assets Shiv employs most regularly is her sharp intelligence — she would, if asked, call herself the smartest of the Roy siblings. A career in “spin doctoring” and campaign advising brought her success in rallying people, before movement into the company brought out a fiery leadership instinct.

While being known for being demanding and somewhat unforgiving, and having a preference to follow her own personal instinct to the detriment of others, when she finds the right people to work with, she can truly be a formidable asset to any team, keeping as much in hand as she possibly can. A capacity to phrase things very precisely led to a role in journalism on the Cambria One for her, though she desperately wants to unveil new information about the ship’s more . . . “political” sector, wherever she may find it.

She hasn’t found Kendall or Roman yet to support this hypothesis, but given the size of the ship and the number of people she’s seen running about, she’s not ruling it out just yet.

Unspoken (Captain Rex x Reader)

A/N: aight I tried posting this yesterday and Tumblr really told me to go screw myself by yeeting it out of the tags, so we’re going to try this again! Apol to the couple of people that reblogged the last version before it vanished off the face of the earth. This is prob going to be part one of three I think?

Rex steps into the hangar bay, two cups of caf in hand and a datapad shoved under his arm, and is entirely unsurprised to see you poring over a ship, even though he knows for a fact your shift ended three hours ago.

He can’t help the fond uptick of his mouth as he watches you fuss, your hair falling in your face, a smudge of engine oil on one cheek. The bay is full of movement, squad leaders checking in with their transports ahead of the ground battle they’re going to engage on the planet below. Rex has run through so many different simulations ahead of the campaign he’s started dreaming about it. Sedratis is green and beautiful from space, but they have had three whole briefings about the planet’s aggressive fauna, and after Felucia Rex knows that looks are definitely not everything. If he doesn’t have to rescue Hardcase at least once after he tries to ‘make new friends’, it will be a cause for celebration.

The huge Separatist blockade looming in front of Sedratis is going to keep both General Skywalker and General Huulik busy for the forseeable. Commander Tano is going to be directing from the bridge, so Torrent, alongside some of Huulik’s men from the 273rd, are going this one alone. In some ways it means Rex is actually more relaxed – he doesn’t have to make contingencies to try and account for whatever crazy osik Skywalker or Tano might pull – but it does mean that nobody with a lightsaber will be around to swoop in if things go south. It takes a different mindset to plan for, one Rex hasn’t had to use in a while.

But before any of that he has a few moments for himself, and he intends to use them wisely.

“Kix is goin’ to chase you out of here with a sedative if you’re not careful,” he says, smile breaking into a grin when you yelp and spin on your heel.

“Oh – Captain!” You exclaim, and he watches closely as your tongue sweeps across your bottom lip. It’s only something you do when you’re nervous, and seeing it now makes his stomach twist with anticipation. “I don’t know what you mean.”

Rex scoffs, hands you one of the cups of caf, and uses his newly freed hand to disengage his bucket. It’s important to him that you can properly see him mock you.

“Did you lose your chrono or have you been wilfully ignorin’ it again?”

He grins again when you scowl at him. It’s been three whole days since he last managed to make an excuse to see you in person, too busy with all his Force-damned paperwork. You’ve been sending him little comm messages at the end of your repair reports, waiting there for when he reviews them; silly incidents that have happened to passing brothers, jokes you’ve heard in the hallways. But it just isn’t the same.

“Neither,” you mutter, shooting him a dirty look, but your eyes are warm as you curl your hand more firmly around the caf. “Just got caught up, you know how it is. What did I do to deserve the delivery service?”

“Knew you’d be tired when I didn’t find you in your bunk,” Rex shrugs, lifting his own caf to his lips. It’s standard GAR issue, so it tastes like shit, but the warmth helps drag a little of the tension from his shoulders. “Swear you never kriffin’ sleep.”

“That’s rich. How many cups of caf does that bring you to today? Eight?” You shoot back instantly, then tilt your head. “You…you came looking? For me?”

Rex clears his throat, the tips of his ears going warm. In hindsight, it is probably a bit less subtle than he’d hoped. He wasn’t really thinking when he headed down here, beyond the simple need to steal a few last moments with you ahead of the drop. He doesn’t know when it got this way either, that the times he breathes easiest are when he’s sat here with you. He’d known you were interesting from the day he walked in to find you shouting at Skywalker, gesturing furiously at the smouldering junk heap he’d somehow managed to pilot in. And somewhere along the way passing comments had become jokes, had become long conversations, had become the comfortable silence that rests between you now, as he puts his helmet down on a nearby crate and sits, stretching out his legs with a groan.

“Yeah, I have the last drop check forms for Tide Company, they need signin’,” he says, feeling the heat creep down the back of his neck at the unimpressed look you give him. He passes over the datapad with all the casualness he can muster, and fights the urge to fidget as your eyebrows rise.

“Literally any mechanic could have signed these for you.” You say finally, dutifully tapping in your credentials anyway.

“Maybe I didn’t want just any mechanic,” he mumbles before he can stop himself, then grits his teeth together.

“Oh? What if I’d been busy?”

“Then I’d have waited. And you’d have gotten cold caf.”

You scoff and tap some more, but your smile is shy and pleased, and Rex feels something uncoil inside him.

“There,” you say a moment later, slapping the datapad into his chest. “All those lovely ships are ready to get kriffed back up again.”

Rex smirks. “I’m sure the boys’ll be up to the job. Wouldn’t want you gettin’ bored.”

The look you give him is so incredulous he can’t help the huff of laughter that punches out of his chest.

You shake your head at him. “It’s almost as if you like reading reports about the rear hyperdrive alternator. Even I don’t, and I actually understand what they mean.”

I do if they’re written by you.

This is what Rex almost says, before he catches it at the last moment and shoves deep down into his chest, along with all the other feelings he has and doesn’t know how to deal with. He knows some of the boys think he’s repressed, though Fives is the only one brave enough to be vocal about it, and maybe they’re right. But he wouldn’t be where he is if he wasn’t at least somewhat self-aware; he does understand himself well enough to know that he’s shebs deep in feelings he shouldn’t have. And sometimes, when he sees you nervously lick your lips, or look at him like you are now, he lets himself believe you like him too.

Maybe if he was a braver man, he would do something about it. Regulations aren’t the issue – the GAR wouldn’t actually do any fighting if they tried to pull up every vod that stole happiness with other people. And the vode protect their own. There are lots of little things their superiors are none the wiser to.

But clones are given so little, and he savours the way your gaze makes warmth lick through his blood. He loves collecting the little things about you; the curve of your neck when you work, the belly laugh he has only witnessed twice, the hoarse sound of your voice when you’re half asleep and pretending not to be. They are the memories that Rex pulls out and leans on during hard campaigns, the things he armours himself with when he’s surrounded by sleeping brothers in the dark and feels the weight of all those lives resting on his shoulders. If he risks it and you don’t feel the same, then they will not be his anymore, and Rex doesn’t think he can bear going back to having nothing but his name.

“I think I’m learnin’,” is what he says instead, finishing off his caf and crossing his boots in front of him. “Gettin’ real familiar with all those…valves.”

“Force help me,” you mutter fondly, nudging his shoulder with your own. “If you don’t stop distracting me you’re not going to get out on time, Captain.”

“I thought all the repair work had been done,” Rex frowns, looking over his squad’s gunship for any obvious flaws. Nothing looks out of place, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t. Rex is still sore about the time you asked him to pass you a spanner and then laughed at him when he gave you a wrench. They all kriffing look the same. “She’s gonna be okay for the drop, right?”

You step up to the nose art of Rotta stuffed into a grenade bag and pat the aurebesh that proudly proclaims the ship ‘The Ugly Huttling’. “Of course. I’m just running the pre-flight checks, that’s all.”

“Doesn’t sound like a job for the head mechanic. ‘Specially not one that’s off duty.”

You don’t reply immediately, scrolling down your own datapad and tapping off a few more things. His stomach does another happy little flip when you scrub a hand thoughtfully over your hair. Sometimes when he’s falling asleep and not so in control, he imagines what it would feel like to smooth his own hands over it, how it might smell with your head resting under his chin.

Then a thought occurs to him and he frowns. “You are actually sleepin’, right? It’s not like Point Rain?”

He remembers seeing you slumped over at 0400 in the mess, poring over the damages lists for the fourth cycle in a row, the shadows bruised deep under your eyes. You hadn’t known each other well then, able to exchange friendly quips in the corridors but not much else, and he’d been tired enough himself after filing the last casualty reports. You weren’t even under his direct chain of command – nobody would have known if he’d walked away and gone to his bunk. But Rex had watched you for a moment, recognising the telltale signs of a soldier on the edge, and had sat across from you instead.

He’d not realised what it must have been like for the flight teams, to watch all their boys go down in seconds under the harsh Geonosian sun, their ships instantly turning into tombs. Not until you’d cried into your hands in front of him, wracked with guilt over every oil change that might have given the transports an edge.

“No! No, of course not.”

Rex draws his eyebrows together and peers into your face. “’Cause I told you, it gets like that again, just come find me –”

“I’m fine. I’m serious, Captain.”

Rex makes another doubtful noise – he knows you bottle things up. You huff and roll your eyes.

“Look, it’s just…I don’t like letting anyone else do your pre-drop checks,” you mumble, not meeting his eyes. Rex freezes. Your tongue sweeps over your lip again before you worry it with your teeth. You will not look at him, and Rex wonders whether your cheeks would feel as hot as his do if he laid his fingertips against them now. “I like knowing I’ve done everything I can to keep you safe.”

Rex feels something in his chest squeeze. “Oh. Oh – that’s –“

He clears his throat gruffly and rubs the back of his neck, not even sure what expression is on his face but knowing he needs to get rid of it quick. Torrent is almost definitely on their way down here by now, and if they see him like this, they’re never going to shut up about it. He has trouble enough with Fives and Jesse as it is.

“Silly. Yeah, I know.” You huff, the sound harsh.

“Not what I was gonna say,” Rex mutters, shooting out a hand to grasp your wrist. He barely catches the soft gasp that leaves your mouth, but Force, it hits him like a blaster bolt. Your hand curls over his vambrace, cradling the chipped, mass-produced plastoid like it’s worth something, like it’s precious. “I was gonna say thanks.”

The corner of your mouth lifts. “Thank me by coming back.”

Before he loses his nerve, Rex slips his hold down to squeeze your palm. Your fingers curl instantly around his own. “I think I can do that.”

There’s a long moment where you stare at each other, and Rex feels his pulse thunder in his ears because you are holding his hand and he wants.

“Torrent reportin’ for drop, Captain!”

Echo’s voice rises above the surrounding noise as Rex’s personal squad enters the hangar bay, and the moment breaks.

You jerk away from Rex with a curse, flailing for your datapad. “Bantha shit, I’m not ready! I told you you’d make me late.”

Rex watches dazedly as you finish your checks, barely aware of anything else until Jesse steps up beside him and jams an elbow into his ribs. “Wondered where you’d slunk off to, sir.”

Rex grunts, muttering something about paperwork, and moves away to retrieve his helmet. He can feel the way Torrent is watching you both with undisguised curiosity and is suddenly dreading the ride down to the surface. He’s never been cheered up by the thought of turbulence before, but faced by the smirk on Fives’ face, it really does feel like the best option.

Fives says something to you that Rex doesn’t hear, but it makes you gasp and smack him as you make your way back over.

“You’re all clear, Captain.”

“Copy that. Time ‘til drop, Fives?” He snaps off automatically, the familiar motions grounding him, bringing him back to himself in an instant. As Rex speaks, the huge doors bisecting the ship open above the hangar, and there is a distant roar as the first wave of starfighters take off.

“Five standard minutes, sir.”

The pilot has already hauled himself into the cockpit, and as the LAAT/i doors slide open, Rex crams his bucket back on. There is a message from General Skywalker on the HUD confirming that the fighters are moving into position, so all there is left to do now is get their shebs moving. His men pile in and he steps on board last, reaching up to grab an overhead strap.

He lets himself look back over his shoulder at you once, finds your eyes already on him. You grin at him, a last gift that he grabs hold of with both hands.

“Bring me back a souvenir, yeah?” You ask the squad at large. “I could use a super-battle droid around here to help me carry things.”

Echo leans forward so you can hear him as engines start up, a cheeky grin on his face. “Sorry sir, battlefield trophies are against regs.”

You pout. “Not even one measly droid finger?”

“We’ll at least send you a holo!” Hardcase shouts, the sound of your laugh stolen by the noise.

The doors slide shut and Rex takes a breath, one hand drifting down to grip the butt of his pistol. Now he just has another battle to win, so that when he comes home there will be more moments to steal, and more caf to share with you
