Erin has had beef with him since the events of Book 3. She hasn't exactly gotten over him tricking her friends into servitude and then kicking her out of the closest thing she could consider a home... He made it personal.

In a physical fight, I think Erin could take him EASY. Azul has shown himself to be easily fatigued and rather uncoordinated on land. Erin's got a lot of fight in her so I'm pretty confident she would whoop him if it really came down to it.

On land, anyway.

If we were talking about an aquatic fight where he was in his octopus form, she's cooked. No question. The tweels have already confirmed he's much stronger in the water AND he's got eight extra appendages to work with.

looking back at kantbison's relationship and specifically kant's relationship with submission throughout the show after episode 8 has really put a lot of things into perspective for me.

bc like. it's complicated. i'm not gonna pretend that it's not. there's too much there in kant's character to ever really be able to isolate one thing he says or does before like. episode 6 or so. and be able to say 'this was exactly what he meant, this was his sole feeling and/or his sole motivation here' bc everything's far too intertwined to ever pick apart properly.

that said though. i always felt there was a sense of reluctance in kant when it came to giving bison power over him and specifically the bdsm thing. and i could never quite figure out bc i didn't particularly get the impression that he disliked it either but there was just something that was off about it that i could never quite put my finger on, but i think i've finally figured it out. and it's really not that surprising, bc as this show's gone on it's become increasingly clear that with kant all roads lead to the same place, and that's the issue of choice - or lack of choice, in kant's case.

submission was never really the issue i don't think. kant knows how to submit, is good at submitting - at the end of the day, isn't that what he does with christ? submit to his will, follow his orders? isn't he collared and chained to him? isn't he such a well behaved dog for him? kant knows very well how to submit. but the thing is is that it's not a willing act of submission where christ is concerned. kant submits because, like with pretty much every other facet of his life, he has no other choice. he behaves because he has to.

and then the next thing kant knows there's bison, outright telling him that he'd like him to submit. to let bison take charge and have kant bend to his will, to follow his every whim. and bison wasn't pushy about it - if anything it was the opposite. he was reluctant, assuring kant that it was fine, that he didn't have to, that actually maybe it was better that they didn't. he gives kant the choice. but it's not a real choice. kant's answer is already laid out for him.

and i think that's where the dissonance entered. you see hints of annoyance and frustration before then, but the much more subtle 'off' feeling that i felt started around then. and i think it's bc for all intents and purposes kant was already completely submitting to bison's will. he was already going along w whatever bison wanted bc he had to, bc he needed bison to trust him, bc saying no to anything thrown his way wasn't (and had never been) an option.

but ofc bison didn't know that. he just wanted to dom his boy. but i think he could also feel the reluctance and the confusion around it all. bc despite what he said and did to reassure bison that he was into it and wanted it too, kant was always subconsciously resisting. and as i said i think there's a lot in that too, it's not simply one thing - bison is a murderer at the end of the day, and dom/sub dynamics are supposed to be built primarily on trust, and kant didn't trust bison not to hurt him too much or go too far. it was also clearly a new thing to him considering he didn't even know what a safeword was. and it was maybe even some weird sense of loyalty to christ. you know what they say: you can't serve two masters. and kant already had one. he was already collared and chained, already submitting. and kant's current master had an awful lot of power over him. he knew what kind of punishment awaited him if he disobeyed.

but above all else kant knew he couldn't really say no. and he hated that.

and so we're back to choice again. the one thing kant has never had. here he is getting forced into submission again - not by bison, but by circumstance. and so no matter what he says or does or how into it he really does seem, there's always this subtle reluctance that rolls off of him. there's always just something off about it all. (which, thinking about, may have been one of the reasons why so many people were turned off by kantbison, bc there was just something not quite right in the vibes, but i digress)

but obviously things change. kant accidentally falls in love with bison, despite his best intentions. and, maybe even more importantly, bison falls in love with kant. and that love changes bison - bison, who needed power so desperately when they first met that he turned nearly every interaction they had into a game of tug of war. bison who, despite not necessarily needing kant's submission, would also never ever give in to kant's will, not even a little. but that same bison falls for kant, and he begins to yield. starts to let himself just be, and by extension let kant just be too. bison begins to settle, become a little docile. he lays on kant's chest and kisses his feet. he rolls onto his back and lets kant loom big and dominating over him, despite how desperate he once was for power. and kant is clever, he knows that's what bison wanted. that's why he gave into him all the time. but by letting kant maintain some of the power in their relationship without a fight, he's basically telling kant i would like you to submit to me, but i don't need it. i just want you. and kant hears that. and that changes things. because without knowing it or even really meaning to, he's given kant a choice.

and we all know what kant chooses.

and to be clear, for the most part i think this is all happening on a subconscious level without either really realising it or thinking about what's happening. but the choice is conscious. it's his. and kant chooses the master that gives him the option to choose. that choice changes everything for kant. everything. it recalibrates his whole world view, his whole life. and the minute he chooses (chooses!) bison, he submits himself to him wholeheartedly. he puts the collar on himself.

but we don't get the reality of what that means until ep 8 bc of yknow. all the stabbing and kidnapping and manipulation and retraumatisation and scheming such. but then we do see it. and we see just how deep it goes for kant, that ease of submission, and his desire for it. how he doesn't run despite having many, many opportunities to do so. how he doesn't eat even when bison's nowhere to be found and he has freshly cooked food in his hands bc bison hasn't said he can. how he doesn't untie himself despite being able to bc bison tied him up for a reason. and sure, all of that is love too, and it's also playing nice bc he desperately wants bison's forgiveness. but this is all also an active form of submission, the same way a dog submits to their owner when they say sit, down, stay, wait. a good dog doesn't eat until it's given permission. and ultimately doesn't the fact that kant safewords tell us exactly what kind of state of mind he's in? what he thinks about their situation and their relationship? (and i won't go over it bc i've already talked about in length here but the act of safewording truly said so, so much)

and yknow, thinking about it really it shouldn't even be surprising bc we were literally shown who kant was back when they first met. and what did he do? went when bison said to go, came when bison said to come back. bison said you're not doing this alone and kant sat still and let bison ride him to his heart's content. it was very subtle, but he really was submitting to bison in little ways all the way back then! the signs were there!

and the beautiful thing about it to me is that in episode 8 there is not a single moment of dissonance between kant and bison. there's no more weird vibes. there's just kant and the first choice he's ever got to make. kant and his chosen master. kant and the hand at the end of his leash. kant and bison.

i want to say first of all, i'm not sure where you're getting pretty privilege from in regards to peter pettigrew? it actually bothers me when people make him too attractive (like when they fancasted him as dane dehaan), and i kin him a lot so i mostly like him because i'm projecting lmao.

onto my actual point. i can see you took my post seriously, which is fine! i feel the same when i see 'joking' marauders hate. so if you don't want to hear my reasoning for not liking snape, you don't have to read this as it's a bit of a ramble, and it's not directed at you specifically, i just like yapping.

going to preface this by saying that i don't actually hate snape. i'm just not interested in his character.

i have always disliked snape in canon, even as a kid (and not because he was 'ugly and poor' as this person suggested), as he bullied children and i just thought he was annoying (i understand that they're are complexities to his character, but this is just what i thought as a child). whereas peter pettigrew and barty crouch jr, for example, weren't mentioned enough in canon for me to really form an opinion before hand as someone who was previously a very casual fan of hp.

when i joined the marauders fandom it was at a time when snape slander was like 1/3 of the content (at least on tiktok, which was my only form of marauders content). and fair enough, he took his anger out on children, was cruel towards his rival's child for years, stopped giving harry occlumency classes over something trivial, called his only friend (and the supposed love of his life) a slur for standing up for him, invented a killing curse for his childhood bullies after they had stopped bullying him.

so, yes, i hated snape, because all of this was pointed out to me repeatedly when i first joined the fandom.

however, as i do like characters such as barty, evan, and peter, i am happy to accept that some people like fanon versions of snape. i can't accept supporting his canon decisions, but i'm hoping that's not what marauders era snape fans do.

my post was simply saying that i'm not interested in snape's character. at no point did i say that was reasonable or 'fair' since i like the death eaters; he has just never been written about or talked about in a way that interests me. and considering that everyone should be allowed to enjoy things in their own way, i don't intend to look into his character to force the interest upon me. if i see so something that makes me like him, that's that.

sorry this is so long, and sorry if it sounds overly negative, this was just a much needed rant.

point is, like whoever you want, don't worry if other people don't like them as well!! i can't control what i like and what i like reading about, and i imagine neither can you.

I don’t think Lily’s a particularly empathetic person tbh. Petunia’s a cow, but they were obviously close once and Lily doesn’t possess the sensitivity required to understand that it’s coming from a place of being made to feel less than. She flirts with James while her friend is choking on soap suds and throws Severus’ otherness right back in his face after he does the same to her, but only one of them thinks they behaved poorly in that situation. She’s fine with dating an abuser once he (publicly) calms down a bit, but doesn’t require evidence of him making amends to his victims. It’s an interesting character quirk, her self righteousness, but not one that tends to come with introspection. I wonder if people mature mentally in the afterlife? If she’s stuck at 21, forgiveness is probably off the table. If she’s 38, well, I think it’s totally reasonable to be angry at the prophecy debacle, but she also has decades of evidence of his genuine atonement.

Severus is so self-loathing and desperate for connection that he’s incapable of accepting he’s ever got a point when it comes to conflict with Lily, and Lily is a golden child unused to being held accountable for anything. It’s a toxic combination even when they’re children. Add in the fact that Severus’ mistakes indirectly got her killed, and I think they’d both end up feeling that her failures as a friend were so insignificant in comparison it’s not even worth discussing. Maybe the best case is that doing some more self-flagellating and her blessing him with forgiveness even with no reciprocal exchange allows him to move unburdened onto a Lily-free afterlife.

Yes, I think you’ve absolutely nailed it. Severus feels so terrible because he had a deep emotional dependence on Lily. And honestly, I get it—a marginalized kid from a conflict-ridden home, likely neglected by his parents, with zero social skills. I’ve always thought Lily was his attachment figure, which is pretty common among people with emotional deficits: they latch onto those who show them any affection in an exaggerated way, leading to dependency. And clearly, Lily didn’t see their friendship the same way, because she didn’t have those emotional needs.

I mean, as much as Petunia was conditioned to be resentful and we dislike her, we can probably credit her when she implies multiple times that Lily was the favorite child. It’s logical: Lily was the "magical" child. Plus, being the younger sibling likely meant she was spoiled by default, and being a witch added another layer of fascination for her parents. She was probably used to a lot of attention and praise, which only solidified during her school years as she became popular, well-liked by adults and peers, and widely considered very attractive. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if she was a bit egocentric, which fits with her inability to put herself in someone else’s shoes or care about anything unless it affected her personally.

For instance, she didn’t care about Mary McDonald being bullied because Snape was her friend. But the moment Snape stopped being her friend, she suddenly brought it up. Like, what? It didn’t bother her before? Or did she not care because she didn’t need leverage against Severus? And isn’t it convenient that she "hated" James because of how he treated her friend, but once that friend wasn’t in the picture, she ended up dating him? What, did she suddenly forget everything James did, or was it just that she no longer needed to pretend to care? In my headcanon, she was all about appearances. She got involved in the war because it affected her directly; if it hadn’t, I think she wouldn’t have cared at all.

That said, I don’t think Severus owed anyone an apology. I mean, I understand why he felt guilty, and it’s commendable, but if I’d spent five years being bullied and harassed and then my ex-best friend—who witnessed all of it—started dating my bully? I swear I’d burn her hair off. I’d grab a lighter and make a bonfire right in the middle of class. And then I’d pluck her eyelashes out, one by one. Honestly, it’s like if your friend decided to date a guy who tried to assault you—what the actual fuck, girl? What are you even thinking? Let her mother apologize for raising her with no sense of ethics.

I’m obsessed with Zuma’s reserved nature at the moment. And in my thoughts, an interesting comparison occurred to me. Okarun seems like he would be shy and introverted, right? But from the start, we see how much Okarun livens up when he has someone to talk to. He instantly expounds his interests at Momo, and he instantly shows how incredibly spunky he is around people. He doesn’t hesitate to talk back with Momo. He’s so full of life and energy. He loves talking with people, and as we see him get more and more friends over a short amount of time, he breaks out of his shell all the more. He’s certainly not disliking being surrounded by people. Contrary to what I would think based on my own presumptions and stereotypes of what a “nerdy” character would be like, he’s actually very extroverted and outgoing. Socially awkward, yes. But he loves being around people!

Now, we take a look at Zuma, who, even though he has a pretty large amount of people who know him… his gang members and refugees… he doesn’t appear particularly close with them. He’s still very closed off, from what we can see. Obviously, this is partially due to his trauma. He’s probably afraid to get close to people after losing so much as a child. But notice how much less outgoing he is than Okarun. He doesn’t talk about his interests with people (come on, Zuma, I want to know what you like, besides geta sandals!) When someone bites Okarun, he bites back, so to speak. Okarun is spunky. He’ll yell at you if you yell at him. Zuma, however, shrugs it off. Maybe this is a result of the time he spent learning to maintain his prior anger issues and violence, but still. We see Jiji and Aira be pretty outright antagonistic to him, and he’s like “that’s fine.” He’s very mellow and calm, which adds to his reserved and introverted nature.

Rodger Glass

Rodger Glass, a famous detective living in the town of Gardenview. Was first in an arranged marriage with Connie Boolynski, but is rumored to have murdered her. He was taken to court for these charges, but his own quick wits saved him.

Lives in the town’s great manor with his new wife, Teagan Glass, their employees, and adopted child, Toodles. He doesn’t exactly love Teagan, but he sure loves the money her family brings to them each year. 

He’s rather stern with his employees, a no-nonsense man as he usually is when it comes to work, but one butler does seem to get ‘special treatment’ every now and again.

Teagan Glass

Teagan Glass, the second wife of Rodger’s. She lives in the manor with her husband and adopted child, Toodles.

She comes from a rich background, growing up wealthy and staying that way throughout the years. Despite this, she’s a kind-hearted soul in public, willing to help anyone she knows financially. Behind closed doors it’s a different story. Like Rodger, she’s strict and pushy, but doesn’t mean harm most of the time. She tries to be polite to the employees, but it seems after each passing day her teabag’s rope is wearing thin.

She seems weary of her husband and his whereabouts, especially with that butler, but Shrimpo, the second butler, seems to help her out a bit. 

Glisten

The Manor’s lovely butler, part time diva. He’s not the best at his job, having dropped many plates and drinks, but his jokes towards guests make up for it. He’s most often busy when Rodger has guests, however. He often reads to Toodles and helps her choose outfits each day.

Shrimpo

Shrimpo, the angriest butler in town. Definitely not favorable when it comes to interacting with guests, or anyone really, but excellent at his work. Often assists at Teagan’s tea parties. He’s very easy to set off, but something about Teagan keeps him calm, maybe it’s the smell of the sweet tea?

Tisha

The lovely maid of the manor, consistently cleaning so the place is spotless. Hates when guests dirty her floors with the ichor outside, cleaning their shoes before they even enter. Enjoys Toodles’ company while she works, but the lovely ghost of the mansion keeps her company.

Connie Glass Boolynski

Rodger’s previous, now deceased wife whom haunts where she died. Cause of death? Her corset was incredibly tight, allowing her husband to stealthily stab her. She bled out, unknowing of her fate until it was far too late.

Toodles 

The young daughter recently adopted by the Glass family. Astounding straight-A student, despite apparently never studying. She enjoys reading books or hosting small ‘fashion shows’ with the butler Glisten when he’s not busy. Dislikes Teagan, finding Tisha’s company more welcoming and comfortable.

#this is all extremely true#but also treating different preferences as dangerous conflict#or demanding moral justifications for those preferences#or treating different interpretations as moral failings#are equally if not more obnoxious in the context of fictional characters#like the problem is not that there's a difference between sports fandom and other fandoms#it's people applying moral frameworks as a cudgel in fandom arguments in order to feel superior about their own preferences#and that is definitely not any LESS dumb when it happens in discussions of steven universe or whatever than it does in discussions of f1 lo

i agree with this basically, that this is a really insidious, frustrating, and quite prevalent element within most fandom. probably a lot of what i read as inexperience in sports fandom boils down to that sort of needless moralization in fandom spaces. i think that the people engaging in this sort of behavior are probably engaging the exact same way with traditional fiction fandom - i just also think that even a surface-level engagement with traditional partisan sports spaces does a lot to highlight how silly it is to act like this, more so than in typical fiction fandom argument (in which things like authorial intent tend to play a major role in discourse).

i should have phrased my original post better - but to be clear, i see regular fandom preferences and difference in opinion as separate from the partisan fandom of sports.

to me sports fandom is different than traditional fiction fandom. in sports fandom, partisanship is not a byproduct of natural human difference in preference and opinion, it's literally built into the way the average sports fan engages with the thing that they're a fan of.

if someone is a fan of one team, chances are they hold active dislike for other teams/athletes. there's one athlete i hate because he kind of underperformed for my team for a while and then left for a rival team. my dislike of this athlete is quite literally not any deeper than the fact that i arbitrarily chose one team to support and he no longer plays for that team and so i hope he misses every penalty he ever takes. (actually now that i think about it there are two athletes at the same club who i feel this way about). i don't think these athletes are evil because of that. i just don't want them to succeed. because i don't support their team.

when people say that it’s obvious that a lot of f1blr have never followed a sport before, they’re not saying that it’s a BAD thing to have an entry point into sports fandom. like, it’s tumblr, a lot of people belong to communities that are marginalized in traditional sports spaces. everyone has to start somewhere. it’s also okay to mostly engage with the sport through the lens of traditional tumblr fandom. like, that’s mostly how i use this particular platform. who cares.

what is grating to ME is when people don’t see a difference between sports fandom and traditional tumblr fandom, and start treating different team/driver preferences as dangerous conflict. or start demanding moral justifications for those preferences. or treat preferences/interpretations different than their own as moral failings and not pretty basic natural outgrowths of sports fandom spaces.

that sort of behavior just demonstrates to me that the person hasn’t interacted at all with sports fandom spaces other than tumblr. sports are essentially about arbitrary conflict and tribalism yknow? nothing dangerous about that.

I’m really glad that people in the TMNT fanbase have finally started calling out the insistence that 2012 Splinter is irredeemably abusive. As well as how the criticism comes across as racist. The way the character is depicted in the show versus the way he is often depicted in fan content is like night and day. I’m open to different fan interpretations, but I’ve seen an insane amount of fans confidently state that he’s canonically abusive. And this is one of the worst misinterpretations of canon I’ve ever seen in fanon.

2012 Splinter was raised in Japan, and seems to take on a more East Asian style of parenting. He’s stricter with his sons, but usually when they put themselves or their brothers in danger. However, I would say that he’s far more gentle and understanding than anything else. And I would like to clarify that reasonably disciplining your kids and teaching them right from wrong is not abusive. That’s what it means to be a parent. Never correcting misbehavior is another form of abuse, one that borders on neglect.

Another thing to consider is that he’s in a very unique situation. Splinter and the turtles are mutants. They will never be accepted by society and will always be seen as monsters; he knows this. He teaches his sons how to fight so they can defend themselves in a world that will try to hunt them down and kill them. He has nightmares about his sons dying. The show explores the terror he faces as a parent, which is something he’s already experienced with the loss of his daughter and wife.

Splinter is devastated and relieved to find that Miwa is alive. He loves her as his daughter, but that doesn’t mean he no longer sees the turtles as his sons. He views them as being his children just as much as his biological child. He clarifies this to Leonardo. The reason I love TMNT so much as a franchise is because it’s one of the few pieces of media that explores familial love within an adopted family. And TMNT 2012 constantly reiterates that family can look unconventional and does not need to be bound by blood.

Splinter is a realistic depiction of a parental figure. Most parents in media are either abusive or perfect with no in-between. Splinter is the type of parent who tries his best but still makes mistakes. In real life, there is no such thing as a perfect parent. Even the kindest parents are going to make mistakes from time to time. But my favorite thing about Splinter is that he almost always owns up to his mistakes. Rather than doubling down or pretending he did nothing wrong, he admits his wrongdoing and apologizes. And that’s way better than a lot of parents.

I don’t want to get too personal, but I grew up with several abusive adults in my life. I know firsthand what it’s like to experience very violent abuse at the hands of an adult. It fucked me up and I’m still recovering from it. Pretty much none of those adults ever admitted wrongdoing or grew as a person. In their eyes, they were always in the right and I deserved what I was getting. I would’ve loved to have a patient and kind adult in my life like 2012 Splinter.

Abuse looks different for everyone, and I don’t want to imply my experiences are universal. But as someone who did grow up in that environment, it’s upsetting to see people blow Splinter’s actions out of proportion in order to validate their dislike of a him. To me, it feels like fans are using the abuse as a tool to make their opinions look morally correct. As a writer, I understand making alternate universes to amp up the angst potential. But insisting that fanon is canon is where I draw the line, especially when it comes to willfully misinterpreting a character.

Very interesting to me that a certain subset of the BES fandom's favourite iterations of Mizu and Akemi are seemingly rooted in the facades they have projected towards the world, and are not accurate representations of their true selves.

And I see this is especially the case with Mizu, where fanon likes to paint her as this dominant, hyper-masculine, smirking Cool GuyTM who's going to give you her strap. And this idea of Mizu is often based on the image of her wearing her glasses, and optionally, with her cloak and big, wide-brimmed kasa.

And what's interesting about this, to me, is that fanon is seemingly falling for her deliberate disguise. Because the glasses (with the optional combination of cloak and hat) represent Mizu's suppression of her true self. She is playing a role.

Take this scene of Mizu in the brothel in Episode 4 for example. Here, not only is Mizu wearing her glasses to symbolise the mask she is wearing, but she is purposely acting like some suave and cocky gentleman, intimidating, calm, in control. Her voice is even deeper than usual, like what we hear in her first scene while facing off with Hachiman the Flesh-Trader in Episode 1.

This act that Mizu puts on is an embodiment of masculine showboating, which is highly effective against weak and insecure men like Hachi, but also against women like those who tried to seduce her at the Shindo House.

And that brings me to how Mizu's mask is actually a direct parallel to Akemi's mask in this very same scene.

Here, Akemi is also putting up an act, playing up her naivety and demure girlishness, using her high-pitched lilted voice, complimenting Mizu and trying to make small talk, all so she can seduce and lure Mizu in to drink the drugged cup of sake.

So what I find so interesting and funny about this scene, characters within it, and the subsequent fandom interpretations of both, is that everyone seems to literally be falling for the mask that Mizu and Akemi are putting up to conceal their identities, guard themselves from the world, and get what they want.

It's also a little frustrating because the fanon seems to twist what actually makes Mizu and Akemi's dynamic so interesting by flattening it completely. Because both here and throughout the story, Mizu and Akemi's entire relationship and treatment of each other is solely built off of masks, assumptions, and misconceptions.

Akemi believes Mizu is a selfish, cocky male samurai who destroyed her ex-fiance's career and life, and who abandoned her to let her get dragged away by her father's guards and forcibly married off to a man she didn't know. on the other hand, Mizu believes Akemi is bratty, naive princess who constantly needs saving and who can't make her own decisions.

These misconceptions are even evident in the framing of their first impressions of each other, both of which unfold in these slow-motion POV shots.

Mizu's first impression of Akemi is that of a beautiful, untouchable princess in a cage. Swirling string music in the background.

Akemi's first impression of Mizu is of a mysterious, stoic "demon" samurai who stole her fiance's scarf. Tense music and the sound of ocean waves in the background.

And then, going back to that scene of them together in Episode 4, both Mizu and Akemi continue to fool each other and hold these assumptions of each other, and they both feed into it, as both are purposely acting within the suppressive roles society binds them to in order to achieve their goals within the means they are allowed (Akemi playing the part of a subservient woman; Mizu playing the part of a dominant man).

But then, for once in both their lives, neither of their usual tactics work.

Akemi is trying to use flattery and seduction on Mizu, but Mizu sees right through it, knowing that Akemi is just trying to manipulate and harm her. Rather than give in to Akemi's tactics, Mizu plays with Akemi's emotions by alluding to Taigen's death, before pinning her down, and then when she starts crying, Mizu just rolls her eyes and tells her to shut up.

On the opposite end, when Mizu tries to use brute force and intimidation, Akemi also sees right through it, not falling for it, and instead says this:

"Under your mask, you're not the killer you pretend to be."

Nonetheless, despite the fact that they see a little bit through each other's masks, they both still hold their presumptions of each other until the very end of the season, with Akemi seeing Mizu as an obnoxious samurai swooping in to save the day, and Mizu seeing Akemi as a damsel in distress.

And what I find a bit irksome is that the fandom also resorts to flattening them to these tropes as well.

Because Mizu is not some cool, smooth-talking samurai with a big dick sword as Akemi (and the fandom) might believe. All of that is the facade she puts up and nothing more. In reality, Mizu is an angry, confused and lonely child, and a masterful artist, who is struggling against her own self-hatred. Master Eiji, her father figure who knows her best, knows this.

And Akemi, on the other hand, is not some girly, sweet, vain and spoiled princess as Mizu might believe. Instead she has never cared for frivolous things like fashion, love or looks, instead favouring poetry and strategy games instead, and has always only cared about her own independence. Seki, her father figure who knows her best, knows this.

But neither is she some authoritative dominatrix, though this is part of her new persona that she is trying to project to get what she wants. Because while Akemi is willful, outspoken, intelligent and authoritative, she can still be naive! She is still often unsure and needs to have her hand held through things, as she is still learning and growing into her full potential. Her new parental/guardian figure, Madame Kaji, knows this as well.

So with all that being said, now that we know that Mizu and Akemi are essentially wearing masks and putting up fronts throughout the show, what would a representation of Mizu's and Akemi's true selves actually look like? Easy. It's in their hair.

This shot on the left is the only time we see Mizu with her hair completely down. In this scene, she's being berated by Mama, and her guard is completely down, she has no weapon, and is no longer wearing any mask, as this is after she showed Mikio "all of herself" and tried to take off the mask of a subservient housewife. Thus, here, she is sad, vulnerable, and feeling small (emphasised further by the framing of the scene). This is a perfect encapsulation of what Mizu is on the inside, underneath all the layers of revenge-obsession and the walls she's put around herself.

In contrast, the only time we Akemi with her hair fully down, she is completely alone in the bath, and this scene takes place after being scorned by her father and left weeping at his feet. But despite all that, Akemi is headstrong, determined, taking the reigns of her life as she makes the choice to run away, but even that choice is reflective of her youthful naivety. She even gets scolded by Seki shortly after this in the next scene, because though she wants to be independent, she still hasn't completely learned to be. Not yet. Regardless, her decisiveness and moment of self-empowerment is emphasised by the framing of the scene, where her face takes up the majority of the shot, and she stares seriously into the middle distance.

To conclude, I wish popular fanon would stop mischaracterising these two, and flattening them into tropes and stereotypes (ie. masculine badass swordsman Mizu and feminine alluring queen but also girly swooning damsel Akemi), all of which just seems... reductive. It also irks me when Akemi is merely upheld as a love interest and romantic device for Mizu and nothing more, when she is literally Mizu's narrative foil (takes far more narrative precedence over romantic interest) and the deuteragonist of this show. She is her own person. That is literally the theme of her entire character and arc.

Right. The woman is a cinephile. Every quip he makes finds itself traced to one movie reference or another. But how the hell does a rock climbing wall have to settle that too? He laughs, more at Sonia than the actual reference itself. He's satisfied he got the flush, making sure to stare appropriately when she makes the remark in turn.

Not to worry, Sonia. Wylan is adept at multitasking. As seen here as they go about their shopping excursion amidst the displays and racks.

"If it's somewhere that gets snow on the ground, I try not to be there when the snow is. Alas, we can not in fact always get what we want." And, really, he should be epitomized by that sentiment. Though the twisting nebula of timelines had brought him to this point, taking clothes from his now-girlfriend to try on in extravagant fashion. It never evades him how many other opportunities were missed because of his circumstances. What kind of person could Zachary Reis have grown up to be, otherwise? "But if you try sometimes... Well." Wylan lets the remainder of the line be left to the air as the variety of items are taken in hand.

The wrench to his lips is played off comically, despite being sourced to the distaste of how his initial control of fate had set him down into the pits. No, Sonia, he doesn't really dislike your choices, but it's funny to act as though he's being judgmental. A leer sent her way as he leans in.

"There's a severe lack of cartoon characters and humorous logos on these shirts. I wear this and I might be considered someone who acts my age. Not a problem, I'll just compensate. It seemed to work some on your cousins, and I was barely even trying there. It was more trying to keep myself from being beaten up, but y'know."

After a hum, he smiles. Then slips into a changing room to start the show. Everything fit fine enough. And he made sure to dramatically present the fits to Sonia. One time going so far as to step out without any pants on. One of the sweaters being put back because he disliked how far it fell down his hips. That in itself doesn't alleviate some of the creeping feeling underlying this endeavor. That evasive part of his mind, one that wished to stay slippery and never wanted to be pinned down, knew what this was.

Reflecting on movie references, how many were there that included a scene of the rebel being cleaned up and pressed into a stiff ensemble? Sure, these clothes didn't itch as the stereotype usually implied, but Wylan felt a similar sentiment. After all. This wasn't a one-off attire or event for the purpose of fitting into a role. This was going to be him. Wylan Rechtur needed to be a clean cut individual so that he might be a fitting partner for Sonia Nevermind.

For her. For Sonia. For Sonia.

The wrench in his heart is swallowed back. The man stands, staring in the mirror, pensively. It clicks away, he clicks away. Adopting several different poses to see if he couldn't break free character-wise. Or if that mattered. Did it? Probably not. Just as Sonia was handed clothes to wear, the assassin imagines it'll be the same case for him. Some little assistant toddling after him that could go so far as to fuss over which buttons he bothered to snap.

Right then.

"These'll work." He lies, smoother than the coffee he had just been drinking with no betrayal on his features. The smile he passes to Sonia is genuine as he slips out of the changing room one last time (this time his pants are on, not going to pull that twice in one setting). Now back in his prior clothes with everything he was inclined to grab over the arm. "And if they don't, I'll make sure to take the blame, and not immediately throw you under the bus since you picked them out."

Ah, he seemed to misunderstand, Sonia thought as she smiled. An honest mistake, but one she should probably explain before he met the rest of the family. They likely wouldn't find it quite as amusing as she did. "The bias against America is primarily due to the fact that your country rejected monarchy," She replied with a shake of her head. "Not necessarily safety: despite America's deep love of firearms, every able-bodied and able-minded Novosonian is trained how to operate them for military duty, so they are less fearful of Americans in that regard. Your right-wing conservatives are much more vocal than ours, though, but I imagine some of the restrictions on royalty that trickle down to the rest of the aristocracy might please people with those values anyway."

But she seemed to misunderstand as well, and while Wylan's was an easy mistake to make, hers wasn't. Sonia knew, to some degree, what his life's work entailed and that he didn't likely take holidays off for fun: he likely couldn't afford to, for the very same reason she guessed was behind her staff's own worries. Safety concerns. Sonia briefly wondered how many people were currently out for his blood, if they could identify him and track him down, and she shivered. At least she could write it off as the weather's responsibility.

"Sorry, I should have realized you would be traveling there for...erm, work," Sonia apologized. She hadn't meant to stress that particular word but it just slipped out, a casual admittance of her worries for him. About so many things: keeping him alive was only one of them. It would be a test to see who was more risky to his health: his past employers or enemies, or her own family.

Thankfully he changed the subject to something else, anything else. "Rock climbing walls? Like in The Princess Diaries?" She piped up before turning pink in embarrassment. "It is not my usual film choice but, when my floormates heard during my first year of Uni that I hadn't seen those films, they insisted that needed to be rectified. As an actual princess with a certain disdain for the Disneyfied versions, they were not too terrible." The second one in particular was resonant: a Royal Council's obsession with finding the crown princess a husband as God forbid she try to reign alone.

A topic a little too close to home, and therefore Sonia would do what she always did during times of anxiety: briefly chew at her mouth before diverting the conversation elsewhere.

"Well, if it is anything like the film then I trust you," She assured him, "But as I remember last night with some amount of clarity, watching my ass means you will have to give my thighs a respite. It may prove too taxing to keep both areas of my body in your sights at the same time."

If he was going to start with banter, she'd be sure to have the last word. At least, that was her intention by purposely reminding him of what her ass was attached to. "I am not sure that the Galeries Lafayette sells pet and pet care items," She admitted as they began to descend the stairs back into the department store proper. "Barring something from Louis Vuitton or Gucci. Does a luxury designer leash and collar have the same effect?" In short, nothing cheap.

Then again, nothing in the grand department store composed of three different buildings in one was cheap. Something Wylan would have to get used to. Something Sonia quietly hoped he never did. They re-entered the men's building and while he entrusted her to pick out something she wanted to see him in, what Sonia really wanted for him was for him to not lose himself in it all. The wealth. The pomp. The familial pressure to acclimate and perform in the manner of tradition he hadn't been indoctrinated into since the day of his birth, like the other peers he would soon be surrounded by. They'd have a leg up on him in every possible way, save two.

The ability to take a life, and the ability to keep her heart.

"You'll need a good coat, especially for the current season," She began. Perhaps best to start with outerwear and work her way in. Or under, she thought briefly as she blushed at the idea of picking out undergarments for him. Hopefully he could handle that himself. "Truth be told, I am often just given clothes to wear and do not often have the luxury to choose anything I wish. And um...I am rather more used to undressing men rather than dressing them. So this is a first for me, really: But I shall do my best. Even though I would love you even if you just wearing a paper bag, Wylan."

Something that could be interpreted as another challenge, Sonia thought as she guessed at his sizes, pulling out a deep gray wool overcoat, two blazers, three pairs of trousers and a pair of jeans, five button down shirts, and two pullover sweaters. Besides the gray, she'd mostly chosen shades of dark blue, navy, and green: they coordinated with or matched his eyes, as well as the usual colors the family wore. Accessories, shoes, sportswear, and sleepwear were whole other categories that needed their own focus and devotion.

"Perhaps try these on for the sizing and feel," She suggested once several workers arranged them all in a dressing room. "I should've asked, I suppose, if wool irritates you. I think you might appreciate it, alongside the cotton and silk blends, for this part of the world at this time of year. I cannot imagine that Las Vegas is conducive to cold winters at all.

If you ever find yourself questioning your own intelligence, just remember that Jujutsu Kaisen gave us a character who is the undisputed strongest living being in his universe (so much so that his birth altered the balance of the entire world around him) and is canonically able to do anything he tries; who could have decided to spend his entire life doing absolutely whatever tf he wanted because there is literally no one and nothing with the power to stop him, but instead chose to use his strength to protect and train the next generation to be strong and intelligent enough to overhaul the current oppressive system that would have stripped those innocent kids of their lives and precious youth in the same way it did his own generation, and this was a good portion of the fandom’s reaction to said character:

mostly based on one (1) line removed from 5 layers of context. When the majority of the story wouldn't have taken place at all if not for his strong sense of morality. I am so Tired.

I just read it, and found their view really interesting and extremely important criticism on how you've decided to write certain reactions. I love your writing a lot, so it was extremely eye opening what they wrote. What i'm getting at is, I would just like to hear your feedback on that specific comment! all love, and I do hope this won't be taken the wrong way!

I've seen it, yeah. and... okay, I've discussed my reasons for not using rape as a content warning before, and I stand by them; I'm not revisiting any discussion on what does and does not constitute rape. the content is warned for, by specifics of what occurs in the text, to give people the chance to make the most informed decision they can about whether to play. that's it.

as for the rest of it... there's things in there that I understand. I get being frustrated that you can't fully explore the extent of the operative's trauma, yet; I get feeling like the rest of the crew don't trust you, or like rohan is a bitch. they don't, and xe is.

the thing that I find disagreeable about a lot of these criticisms (and similar ones) is that I think they betray a fundamental misreading of the text: the operative is a war criminal. they are heavily armed, unstable, and trapped on a ship with civilians. they kill multiple civilians in chapter one; they might well attempt to kill rohan in front of everyone, and later succeed in doing so. they are a confirmed murderer, who by and large refuses to tell the civilians why they are so angry with rohan. this is by design.the focus of this story is very much about coming to terms with your trauma - from long before you meet rohan! you've been medically experimented on, had your personhood denied for a long time, and had any kind of human empathy stamped out of you. part of the point of the game is for me to explore how trauma can be expressed in ways that are deeply unpalatable - the operative is not a "perfect victim" (a phrase I loathe) and their trauma impacts the way they move through the world, drawing out reactions that aren't wholly sympathetic or empathetic, because their actions are often unjustified and cause real harm, or seem that way to those who don't have full context.

this is why joia is important, this is why your relationships with the crew are important. the crew aren't intended to be author voices, they're not the moral compass here or audience stand-ins: they aren't supposed to represent the "correct" approach to dealing with other people's trauma. no character in this situation is intended to be seen as perfect, but as a way to shine light on different facets of the story.

the operative is built a very specific way, for very specific reasons: this is intentional. they are a person who has been deliberately dehumanised, used as a weapon, who volunteered and fought for the right to be a scientific guinea pig for the war crimes company, in order to be of greater use to said company. they have had their bodily autonomy violated so habitually, for their whole career - they have been coercively used as a test subject by their employer - that they can't see it as an abnormal violation. this isn't to say it is justified, or to diminish the traumatic impact rohan has, but... it's not the operative's first rodeo here, even if it's the player's.

they're bad at processing their emotions. the operative Does Not Cry: this is a character choice I have made. this is because they have had that emotional response beaten out of them. the operative isn't capable of taking their own trauma seriously, because they're not equipped to deal with it. they can't look at it head-on.

likewise, nash isn't capable of being a gentle, reassuring, sympathetic person, much as they might want to; a big part of that relationship is the idea that the pair of you have to relearn to how to relate to one another in your new contexts, and that isn't a smooth process. nash also has reasons to be reticent with you that are yet to be explored - this relationship is undergoing development, with both of you as violent people who commit violent acts, and who relate through violence. your relationship is built on your capacity to commit violence together. they are not equipped to deal with violence affecting you in the way it might someone else, because you've both spent the last ten years being conditioned and trained to assault other people. part of the theme of this game is to explore the way these people might experience a uniquely traumatic violent event, and the effect this might have on their own capacity to endure and process violence again themself.

I understand that it might not be the way people want to play their characters, but it's the way the character is written, and I am doing that on purpose. all I'm asking is that you trust me when I say that this is not going to be swept under the rug, even in the least volatile relationship you can have with rohan. if that's not possible for you - if you can't trust me to do this - then you're welcome to stop playing.

the performative accusation that shipping zutara (and occasionally this criticism is levied at jinko/zukka) is colonialist apologism has been addressed in some excellent posts, explaining the inaccuracies and problematic implications of this logic far better than i ever could - like this post and this one and this one and this one and this one.

and i know this topic has been talked about to death, but if you could indulge my contribution for a moment, i just find it interesting how this sentiment results from the cognitive dissonance of atla fans being unable to reconcile with the idea of their favorite show's political beliefs not lining up with their own.

atla is a largely philosophical children's show that at its core deals with themes of love, redemption, and destiny vs. free-will. atla examines these themes through an anti-colonalist, anti-imperalist lens that deconstructs the idea of racial divisiveness and the idea that people of different ethnicities are inherently different. this is message is pretty explicitly stated by guru pathik:

Guru Pathik: "The greatest illusion of this world is the illusion of separation. Things you think are separate and different are actually one and the same." Aang: "Like the four nations?" Guru Pathik: "Yes. We are all one people. But we live as if divided."

and also by uncle iroh:

"It is important to draw wisdom from many different places. If you take it from only one place, it becomes rigid and stale. Understanding others, the other elements and the other nations will help you become whole."

this theme is developed across three full seasons, with the crux of this message culminating in zuko's friendships with the gaang - despite coming from different nationalities and different backgrounds, they have all had their own experiences being hurt by the fire nation and work together to take down the oppressive fire nation government. the question of destiny vs. free will is also explored through zuko's character - despite starting off as an antagonist, he develops into a symbolic representation of how the fire nation's oppression hurts its own citizens. he unlearns the fire nation's imperialist propaganda while simultaneously unlearning his father's abuse. rather than following misguided beliefs of what he thought his destiny was as the heir to the throne, instead he forges his own path.

thus, to claim that zuko can never form a deep and meaningful relationship with any of the gaang because of his nationality goes unequivocally against the themes of the show. and a major part of this is because these are fictional characters being used to analyze different theoretical questions within the show and in some cases, are used as symbolic representations of different philosophical ideas - their friendships and their character arcs serve a purpose within the text that cannot be easily transcribed onto real-life dynamics between people.

it's illogical to criticize fans who are choosing to understand atla at the level of the themes that are presented by the text - who are interested in exploring similar philosophical questions brought up by the show through the context of relationships.

if you don't like the themes of forgiveness and redemption that atla explores, your criticism should be aimed at the writing of the show itself rather than other fans. because you are giving far more thought to the "implications" of a close friendship or romantic relationship between someone from an imperalist nation and someone from an oppressed nation than the writers ever did. (and if you fall in this camp of people, i would hope you wouldn't be reblogging fanart of zuko and the gaang together while simultaneously claiming zuko could can never escape the sins of his ancestors and can never form a deep relationship based on trust and intimacy with katara or sokka or jin - because that would just be hypocritical).

and as a side note, people seem to apply this flawed logic to zutara far more than other ships solely because the show spends the most time exploring the complicated nature of fire nation imperalism in the interactions between zuko and katara in the latter half of b3. this is because they've been juxtapositioned against each other and paralleled with aang since the beginning of the show in ways that toph, sokka, and suki are not, who have mostly been used to examine different themes. there simply isn't enough time to explore these complicated themes with all the other characters, even if they theoretically exist in zuko’s dynamics with these characters, so the writers focus the most on zuko's relationships with katara and aang, and these relationships are given far more narrative weight, so have more content to criticize. but zuko and katara also canonically become friends by the end of the show. if you want to discount the existence of their friendship, claiming that it will always be tainted by the fire nation's oppression regardless of what is shown in the text, then you also have to discount zuko's friendships with aang, suki, toph, and sokka - because even if this isn't shown as a permanent barrier to their friendships in the show, it’s also not shown as a permanent barrier to his friendship with katara. if your logic is solely based on the idea that a person's identity in a relationship as a colonizer or a victim is fixed and unchanging regardless of character development, this would apply to zuko's friendships with everyone else as well.

Personally the amount of people who are either "Jake is a stupid himbo" or "Jake is actively malicious" blow my mind. No, Jake isn't stupid, and he's not evil. He's a sixteen year old who is implied to have a mental disability and/or brain damage (it's not exactly clear, Caliborn claims they have the same developmental disorder and Dirk iirc worries that Jake hit his head too much, I guess you can take either with a grain of salt but I digress), and has not had meaningful real life interactions with other human beings in years. He is in the wrong for his actions, but it feels. Purposefully ignorant to claim he's just stupid or just evil for them.

He's socially stunted. He wants to emulate heroes in movies but lacks self esteem and experience. If the alpha kids had enough time to be more fleshed out (and let's be real, if Hussie cared about Jake) this might have been explored more thoroughly. He'd never had the opportunity to learn how to cope with a relationship, how to communicate his needs, or understand that he can't control how other people perceive him like he can through a computer screen.

He doesn't know healthy boundaries because he's never had to use them, and this goes both ways (allowing his friends to sexualise him and treat him like an object, as well as constantly complaining about his relationship with Dirk to Jane) Like yeah he does run away instead of communicating with Dirk and yeah he does dump all his problems on Jane. I love Jane, but one of her problems is her bottling up her feelings and people pleasing until everything blows up. She should have told him off much sooner, and while he was being a dick, it was partly because she allowed him to feel like it was okay to do, since she never told him it wasn't after the first few times or when she was starting to get aggravated.

His problems with Dirk are a little more complicated because we're never actually shown their relationship or how it broke down, but from what we can gather, Jake felt overwhelmed by Dirk's intensity and decided to ignore him rather than tell him try and avoid confrontation but leading to Dirk being frustrated and breaking up with him. Dirk claims he feels like he bullied Jake into a relationship, and though I personally think that's him making it seem worse than it was, it does mean that Dirk probably was trying to go too fast. I've best heard it is Jake being an introvert pretending to be an extrovert.

This is not to say I don't think people can't dislike or even hate Jake, but it's like. Idk. Misinterpreting a character and disliking that version of them is a little redundant to me.

i've always had this hc that romans are a lot more neutral about the gods than the greeks. looking at the books, it very much feels like a transactional relationship between the romans and the gods. the gods ask and the romans do. they take care of the temples, they make offerings, they pray when they need something, and then they go about their lives. and so i've always believed that when a new roman demigod makes their way to cj, the older demigods/legacies/civilians always tell them not to rely on the gods for anything.

don't think of them like they have feelings, they'll say, the gods take what they want and we dutifully give. more importantly, don't rely on them. if you have a godly parent, no you don't. you have someone who donated sperm or carried you. they care as long as you can give back. and being favored by them is a sentence worse than death. live unnoticed.

then do you think they tried to tell jason grace (youngest in the legion for the longest time, rome's child, jupiter's son, juno's champion) this and he didn't believe them? do think he couldn't believe them not when he was juno's champion? not when he was lupa's youngest? not when he was rome's favored child down to his bone? not when he was their dutiful soldier, their golden boy, their saving grace?
