iwaizumi's noticed that his boyfriend, seijoh's libero, hasn't been doing his best.

iwaizumi has seen what pushing yourself past your limits can do to you. he's seen how oikawa always strived to be the best he could, sometimes pushing himself beyond exhaustion. it takes a huge toll on your body, so iwa promised himself he'd take care of himself, and it's not exactly a secret. he pushed everyone to do the same.

so it surprised iwaizumi when he noticed (name) acting different in the past few weeks. they were all very subtle changes; he would buy coffee in the morning more often, was a bit slower with receives, and a little more tired than he usually used to be.

he was pushing himself.

that's what iwaizumi thought initially. he's seen the signs in oikawa enough times to know the aftermath of straining yourself and making your body work overtime. he decides to wait a bit, see if (name) would mention anything by himself. he didn't.

"iwaaaa," (name) called, leaning over iwaizumi's desk. "can i borrow your homework answers?"

iwaizumi raised an eyebrow at that. "you didn't get time finish it last night?" he asked, pulling out the papers. he noticed his boyfriend's hesitation before he took the papers.

"nah, only got through half of it before i went to bed. my mom had me run errands after school. y'know, groceries 'n stuff." (name) said causally. he hunched over iwaizumi's desk to quickly write down the rest of his answers before passing the worksheets back to him. "thanks!"

"yeah, no problem. . . by the way—" but (name) had left before he could ask his question.

later that day, during practice, the team was doing a spiking drill. (name)'s receives were all flawless, but iwaizumi noticed the slight stiffness of his movements. how he grit his teeth for a spike that wasn't particularly hard to get. how his feet left the ground half a second too late. how his breathing grew ragged faster than usual.

'maybe im overthinking things,' and so he shook the thoughts away. he's used to having to deal with oikawa's bullshit. maybe its made him paranoid.

he went to spike, moving fluidly. the ball went a bit of a distance away from (name)'s direction— almost halfway across the court— but he still went for it. that's when it happened.

(name) reached, pushing himself to make contact with the ball, willing himself to. and he did. he sent it up nicely— a beautiful arc straight to the net. but his body had already exhausted itself. it was too much. his face contorted in pain as he felt his leg spasm. his body slammed against the floor, his shoulder connecting with the wood panels in an odd way. his body tumbled over itself like a ragdoll. (name) just laid there.

iwaizumi darted over to (name), eyes blown wide with panic. as gently as he could, he grabbed his shoulders, lifting him up. his grip was still tight.

"(name)? (name), are you okay?" he asked, sweat dripping from his forehead onto (name).

(name)'s eyes opened, face morphing into a frown. "yeah, shit. . . sorry," he mumbled. he tried to push himself to stand, but let out a sharp groan, falling back down to the floor.

the sound of shoes squeaking against the gym floors was faded as (name) and iwaizumi sat together in the club room. (name)'s leg was propped up on one of the chairs.

'how did this happen?'

sure, (name) was pushing himself more than usual, but that was because the inter-high preliminaries were right around the corner! he had to do his best so the team could go to nationals!

"hey." iwaizumi's voice drew (name) out of his thoughts. ". . . why didn't you stop?" he asked.

". . .what?"

"you were pushing yourself too hard, your body couldn't keep up, and now you can barely move your legs. why didn't you take a break?"

(name) tensed up at iwa's words. he frowned. "because i needed to do better. i needed more practice. i need to be better—"

"is this really better to you?" iwaizumi cut him off. (name) flinched at the volume. iwaizumi was pissed. "seriously, tell me. do you think pushing yourself this far helping anyone? we all need practice, but without breaks, you're doing more harm than good!"

"i know that!" (name) snaps. he glared down at the floor. his head was spinning and his legs were throbbing and he could feel his face grow hot, tears brimming in his eyes.

"i know it was stupid, i know i should have paid attention, i'm sorry. i just wanted us to do better! i wanted us to win." (name) managed. god, he knew he sounded pathetic, the way his throat closed up on him, making him sound all whiney. he rubbed the tears away with the back of his hands, his face scrunched up.

iwaizumi wasn't expecting that. he walks over, sitting next to his boyfriend. he wraps an arm around his shoulder, bringing (name) in to rest his head on his chest.

"hey, hey, it's okay," iwaizumi mumbled. he wasn't great at comforting people. he ran his hand along (name)'s back, rubbing circles. "c'mon. can you stand properly? i'm taking you home."

"what? come on, iwa, just give me a minute, i-i can make it for the rest of practice—"

"(name)." iwaizumi said sternly. "what you need is rest. you don't need to overexert your body anymore. and, you're banned from any type of practice until you get better." he adds.

"what?" (name) sputtered. "that's not fair!"

"of course it is, dumbass!" iwaizumi huffed, crossing his arms. "if you try to play volleyball injured, it'll get worse and take longer to heal. seriously. i don't like seeing you hurt," he adds, quieter that time.

a small smile grew on (name)'s face at that. "fine, but only cause i don't want you worrying," he chuckled. he leaned over to plant a small kiss on iwaizumi's cheek.

haiiii my beloved <33 thank you for asking hehe of course i do…i fear this answer will be slightly ridiculous bc well. recency bias towards aa4 anddd about half the cases are my favorite. vey bad at narrowing down to a few. but i’m going to talk about them all anywaysss. also i’m very predictable like. while i find all the cases very fun to play my favorites are the ones that are more connected to the overarching plots/character arcs. okay here we go!!!

rise from the ashes was my favorite!! i missed maya of course buttt i love ema so dearly…plus we got lanamia lesbianisms and lana and ema’s relationship was sooo. i really enjoyed the introduction of the new mechanics as well and i found the case itself to be one of the most interesting ones to solve.

close close second of course turnabout goodbyes…HUGE for edgeworth understanders and also just like. unraveling the characters’ pasts and starting to understand all of them a little bit. plus you get to destroy manfred von karma’s life <33

hmm i would say reunion and turnabout and farewell my turnabout are about tied here for me!! my poor maya :((( sweetiest pie ever she didn’t deserve any of that. butt it was super interesting starting to learn more about the fey family and i think mimi and ini are superrrr compelling. also we got pearly!!!! and then farewell my turnabout…scariest turnabout ever. i was convinced at any moment doing something wrong would kill maya. however still narratively really well done and enjoyable despite the stress…and i thought adrian was a really interesting character too!

turnabout memories. i think this is like. so foundational to understanding phoenix as a character. plus you get to play as mia which is soso awesome. and you get to slap grossberg. really really awesome.

turnabout beginnings…such a wild case. the fact that it was both mia and edgeworth’s first….the way it ended…augh. good stuff

aa4 my beloved….this one is just hit after hit. i would say turnabout corner mighttt be my least favorite from the game just because i found wocky so fucking annoying but the actual mechanics and details of the case were super super fun to do plus literally trucy nation!!! like every case from this game is so good. turnabout trump another super fun one for the “tutorial” case like immediately throwing you into the crazy questioning what happened in the seven year gap what’s going on with kristoph everything is so augh. really really good. turnabout serenade is super super fun getting to see more about klavier and introducing valant…only thing that’s so annoying is that stupid concert video they make you watch a million times. and turnabout succession. batshit fucking insane as you put everything together. ahhh can you tell i really liked aa4 hehe

and i just started aa5 but nothing’s struck me so far…intro case pissed me off how they literally sidelined athena in favor of phoenix. and im like halfway through the monstrous turnabout and its fun but like. nothing special

well im caught up with arknights now! this victoria arc really is a mess. i think all of chapter 11 could just be removed with no significant consequence. i liked ch9 and think it did what it had to as the actual setup chapter that defines the new baseline situation for the new arc, the only major change i would really make there is to not have outcast die like a bitch to a bunch of goofy generic npcs like at least have her get ganked by eblana or something. 10 was slow as molasses and 11 was even worse you could easliy fold those two into a single chapter and not even approach the pacing being too fast especially when both of them are basically telling you the exact same shit about the self salvation corps and the low class workers and the nobles and shit. why do we spend nearly the whole chapter even getting to the self salvation corps man, just have us there halfway the chapter latest and then do all the allerdale and steam knight shit in the second half and have the manfred bossfight be while you're trying to hack the tower in what's currently ch11, you don't even have to fight the steam knight anyway. i liked ch12 better because in the last like 5 stages of it things finally felt like they were starting to move but here too the pacing is just atrocious and there's too many faces and i bet whatever's in ch13 easily could be combined with 12 into a single chapter too. yostar-hypergryph your PACING

Some problems i had with the finale in hazbin hotel

now before i start i just wanna say that i absolutely love and adore this show with all of my heart but with that being said i can still recognize its flaws and god does it have some

lets get one of the most obvious things out of the way first. charlie did literally nothing. she hit adam once or twice and he beat the shti out of her which was just a dumb excuse to have lucifer show up nad beat the shit out of him.

but more on that later. charlie is the main character and she only gets the motivation to go full 'god mode' when sir pentious dies? even then she didnt do anything. dazzle ends up dying but oh well its fine (or razzle i cant remember). she stabs adam once and even then he beats her up more than anything. hes powerful yes but charlie couldve put up more of a fight

she even has a song in episode 7 about taking charge but honestly... she doesnt really do that. actually sir pentious had a better arc than her and we hardly see him throughout the entire show

sir pentious' death was fine we see him gearing up and it was kinda leading onto the big scene where he would take on adam but...

bro got obliterated in less than like a second and then adam made a joke off of it. tbh at this moment i started laughing so hard because goddamn was it hilarious but then you have charlie and the hotel mourning it like not even five seconds after- like half a second after the joke.

the tonal whiplash of that scene was just... ugh-

like i didnt care about it being serious because guess what? im already laughing at the joke like everything that i cared for about him just thrown into the gutter because guess what? haha funny :)

hey im interested in getting into ygo do u have any recs or recommended orders of reading/watching theres a lot from the looks of it on anilist so i was wondering about your preferences o:

ANON I ABSOLUTELY DOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I'm only about halfway through the sequels (i just started arc-v) so I'm not like the most knowledgable person in the world but I can give you my personal recs. COME CLOSER!!!!!

First of all, every yugioh series is totally independent from each other (sort of - gx is set directly after dm and leans on its worldbuilding quite a bit, and 5ds takes place in the same universe as well though a bit further in the future, but you can watch them on their own with no problem) so if there's one in particular that grabs you there's nothing stopping you from jumping straight to it - that being said I've been watching all of the anime in release order (ygo dm -> gx -> 5ds -> zexal -> arc-v (i am here) -> vrains -> sevens -> go rush) and I've been enjoying it a lot. I also wouldn't recommend watching arc-v in particular without having watched the ones before it as it probably won't really have any impact for you. Now for specific recommendations (in order) !!!! SORRY THIS GOT REALLY LONG.

yugioh manga - START HERE !!!!! the original story by kazuki takahashi. high school boy inherits an ancient magical artifact containing a spirit that's really, really good at playing games (and inflicting psychological torment on bullies). I have to give it a warning for some shonen-typical creepiness towards female characters in the early chapters, but it's REALLY worth reading and it's a story that's so near and dear to my heart. this is the fastest and easiest way to start loving yugioh. Its worth noting that the original ygo manga is the ONLY manga (afaik) that tells the same story as its anime + i haven't read any of the others aside from a little bit of the gx manga, so the rest of my recs are anime-only

(optional) yugioh season 0 / 1998 / toei - a one-season anime based on the early manga chapters. if you like the horror vibes of the manga you'll enjoy this a lot. really fun 90s animation with a killer soundtrack, but generally not considered """canon"""

yugioh duel monsters - this is the one most people watched as a kid. it's an adaptation of the manga, but with most of the early chapters cut out so as to get straight to the card games + some extra arcs added in. this is most people's favorites and the most popular! you can also watch this in lieu of the manga, but you will be missing a LOT of the early story or experiencing it in condensed form (and the plot of ygo dm is already patchy At Best).

yugioh gx - direct anime sequel to ygo dm. boy goes to gamer school to become the next king of games + high school shenanigans ensue. gx is a really charming, goofy romp with a super lighthearted s1, an interesting s2 and a shockingly engrossing s3. s4 (the last 25 episodes or so) never got dubbed in english so if you're a dub enjoyer like me you'll have to switch to subs to get the full story

yugioh 5ds - direct sequel to gx, though further in the future than gx was to dm. card games on motorcycles are real and so is class warfare and the surveillance state. iirc this is the only yugioh anime that was rated 4+ - it has a slightly more mature tone but there's still plenty of lighthearted fun to be had. Really strong s1 with a second season that falls off a little bit, at least to me, but is still absolutely worth watching. s2 is missing a number of episodes in the english dub, so again if you're a dub enjoyer you will find yourself quite confused by the end. its probably worth watching s2 entirely sub-only (something i still need to do)

yugioh zexal - the first of the sequels that is possibly set in a different universe entirely (or just the really distant future). middle school boy gets a magic necklace from his dad that has an alien inside. zexal is a lot of peoples favorites and now that I've watched it I GET IT. Really strong story + pacing from beginning to end and a really endearing cast of characters. It's silly and goofy and fun but DAMN DOES IT COHERE.

yugioh arc-v - the first of the sequels that is DEFINITELY set in a different universe entirely. this is the one I'm watching currently so i don't have much to say about it yet GET BACK TO ME ON THIS ONE. this one boy's dream is to become the greatest clown who ever lived (tragic) (inspiring)

INHALES LOUDLY. that was probably more info than you wanted BUT I HOPE THAT HELPED AT LEAST A LITTLE BIT? again I recommend reading the original ygo manga first and i think that will give you a good idea of whether you are down with the yugioh silliness or not. It's important to remember that this is a very silly anime series about card games but like. As long as you can buy into the worldbuilding and accept that this is just How Things Are in the world of ygo, it's suuuuuuuch a fun world to sink your teeth into.

first is the obligatory special thanks/plagiarism declaration section but a lot of the shots in this are inspired by the original changgwi lyric video which like. please watch it there's a reason this song is a classic animatic song on bilibili like the music is good but the video definitely helped. also speaking of bilibili, special shoutout to this arknights chongyue animatic that introduced me to the song that will haunt the next 8 months of my life!

the original inspiration was the thought that the verse of the spirit telling the story of its own death felt very yjh coded but it took like another week of stewing on it to have the idea of using the final chorus for the dkos arc which was the moment i decided i have to actually make this thing

going strictly by when i started putting pen to paper (pencil to ipad screen? whatever) this took almost exactly 5 months since i created the first drafts in february but the first 3 months ish from february until may were also my school semester so. most of the progress (id say about >60%) was done in the last two months of me working on this every moment i wasnt at work (or playing project sekai, for some reason)

also! funny little detail but counting the drafts and some discarded frames my procreate stack for this thing has exactly 49 artworks in it! neat little easter egg i guess (yeah 51 wouldve been more fitting but whatever)

this fully slipped by both me (at 2am) and my friend whom i sent the finished version to (fighting the flu) but in the final edit i didn't actually include the second half of the last lyric?? it's 'i will take you to the mountain god' i apparently just wrote 'i will take you' and never finished the rest LMAO

speaking of the lyrics i dont speak korean and im not a huge fan of most english translations of this song that exists so on multiple occasions i was so tempted to just use the chinese cover someone on bilibili did because then i'd at least be confident i know where the fucking line breaks were (there's one line at the end where im pretty sure i didn't edit on the line breaks correctly but that was more of an intentional compromise because the timings would've been off otherwise. anyway) tbh the only reason i didnt do that is the atmosphere and delivery of the original song is. really unbeatable like the cover's also pretty good but it doesn't quite achieve the same effect

also speaking of things i fucked up im aware i drew sys in the wrong outfit for the dkos fight but like. ok full disclosure my orv reference folder is a complete mess (theres like 400+ images in there. for some reason) so on net ive gotten character outfits wrong while working on this thing like at least 3 times bc id just grab a random webtoon screenshot from my folder and go w it. it's just that by the time i realised i fucked up i'd already finished drawing all of sys's frames and i was too lazy to go back and change all of them LMAO

anyway yeah some other random things i wanted to whinge about:

there's a lot of effects i wanted to do that didn't quite come across due to. lack of skill/time/patience/all of the above but the one im really annoyed about is the yhk postchorus bit with the 3 circles bc. first off i think i drew those while halfway dozing off on the train to school once because uh. yeah

anyway poor drawing aside id really wanted to recreate the sort of. drawn-in effect on the circles and lines that the original lyric video had but i could NOT for the life of me figure out a way to execute that in capcut so. here we are (also you cant put transitions on overlays in capcut so that's why those also looked so bad. youre welcome)

honestly my timeline for this in capcut looks pretty ridiculous bc if you want to do word by word animations/effects you need to pay for the pro version so my workaround was just to have like five thousand text layers with 1-2 words on it each (do not recommend btw)

speaking of the text im a moron so i kinda forgot to account for the text when drawing frames and wow you can tell. yeah next time im just hand writing the text fuck this

Im also starting to like n!Trevor out of spite. He cant be compared to canon Trevor (he'd get kicked into the sunset) in any way but as his own character he is a decent dude with a tragic past. And both his "friends" and the narrative keep treating him like a joke and a punching bag even when he's demonstrating genuine camaraderie by letting them in his childhood home.

And i cant believe how trevorcard turned into the main ship of this sewer of a show. I want the games duo to be all lovely n affectionate w eachother while i want n!Trevor to punch n!Alucard's fangs in

And honestly im glad he got pushed to the side by the show i cant imagine what s3 would have done to him if the writers thought he was pretty enough for the sexual abuse treatment

No joke, I think N!Trevor is my second favorite character in the show, right behind Dracula. Third if I count N!Hector in S2 and S2 only. Definitely one of the few I don't despise.

Like. He's not great. He's a generic anti-hero down on his luck and with hehe funny alcoholism, and largely inferior to Trevor who despite popular conception has a solid character, strengths and weaknesses. But he's perfectly inoffensive? He has a decent character arc, a decent backstory that explains his flaws, good intentions, and the story doesn't need to tell you that he's good deep down despite his rough exterior: it is shown when at first he walks by a Speaker getting harassed, but then he reluctantly intervenes. I like how in the finale of S1 he directs the mob to defend themselves against night creatures, showing that, when push comes to shove, he's a great leader. I like how, while he's not an expert in magic like Sypha or intimately familiar with Dracula like Alucard, he's genuinely knowledgable about monster lore and proud of his heritage: he's so happy when he finds the Morning Star! Also yeah, lines like "I am Trevor Belmont, and dying has never frightened me" are pretty cool.

He's a cool guy! And the story just hates his guts for no reason??? I am appalled by the amounts of abuse this dude gets put through by his friend and girlfriend?? And then the story who just gets tired of him halfway through????

Trephacard as a ship makes zero sense to me. Trepha, I can kind of understand because, while she is an utter prick to Trevor in S1 and 2 (oh no she learned to swear thanks to him! this is the same girl who wanted to make him drink her piss because he was "rude"), at least the two genuinely bond more in S3 and 4, although in the most useless excuse of a subplot conceivable. But adding Alucard into the mix is like poisoning a well. He's unpleasant, I have really no other word for him. He's mean, cruel, dismissive, insulting, petty, disrespectful... to a guy that did nothing to deserve this constant barrage of insults, in fact Alucard should be more than grateful that this dude wants to help him in this emotionally devastating mission... and Sypha defends him because his Depression™ is worse than Trevor's Depression™.

1. do you know how you want the story to end when you start, or are you just stumbling through the figurative wilderness hoping to find a road?

for the vast majorty of my fics i think i have a pretty good idea of where its going to go, i think because i get the ideas of these cool scenes usually set in act 2 or 3 or i at least the vibe i want from the start and The Point is usually clear the second i put thought into it. currently the only exceptions are 1) this super secret (woooo~~~) ficlet im working on that came from a prompt so i had to spend like 3 or 4 days writing it to properly understand the direction i wanted to take it, and 2) the steve henderson au, which is fucking massive already and it's even bigger in my head stnzgns. that one you obviously know how it ends y'know, it aint the steve henderson au if steve doesnt become a Henderson, but for all the arcs i have along the way it took a while to properly figure out what i doing and how to do that and im just now figuring out what that looks like for the first major arc.

so tldr: usually i know, sometimes i gotta figure it out, but i do need to have it figured out before it can really take shape

25. what’s your revision or rewriting process like?

oof ok so i tried writing this and good fucking god explaining everything i do in editing took up so much space. so this is the short answer for convenience but if anyone wants a long answer im foaming at the mouth to talk about writing stjsnystn (the rest under the cut)

the majority of my process is editing and sometimes first drafts are literally unrecognizable from the final. a lot of how i edit line by line is intuitive/vibes based, and whole scenes/arcs/pacing/flow/theme etc etc is based on a really deconstructed thought process for storytelling, to put it as briefly as i can (because this is one of the parts that got really long) its about The Why of everything going into the story. Picking details or making decisions not based rigidly on formula or trends but instead whats best for the kind of story you want to tell (and then making sure to implement it in a way that actually does that in the story).

for small works i prefer to just change shit as i see it and not worry about doing focused passes through the work, but in the steve Henderson au i literally cannot its too fucking big smhdmyxyn so in that case i do passes that span like whole writing sessions just hyperfocused on this one thing. one of my favorite passes is in-character passes where i pick one person (often dustin bc hes a main character), rewatch them a ton to get in their headspace, and go back and make sure everything they say or do fits them as if they were the sole focus if the story. I'll also do passes to focus just on medical accuracy, passes for a specific character duos to keep their story progressing and consistent, passes for ideas that stay between the lines making sure they stay consistent and understanding how much information im conveying, character's specific mindsets that their arc is about and making sure they dont have any unintentional exceptions, literally if its a thing in the text i probably need to do a pass for it so i know its consistent

also more lighthearted stuff tends to need wayyyy less editing time and its a more balanced half solo half beta process. the easiest was the claudia henderson drabble because it was really just a backstory with an active scene or two all rooted in her outside persective.

also sometimes i just start from scratch halfway through, like mr crayola henderson has one previous half-complete version in my doc fhdlas tho i guess thats how drafts are supposed to work

honestly i wouldn't have much to tell them. i didn't start writing fanfic until july of last year?? something like that and i started with the steve henderson au. maybe don't write that one about the triggering thing lol.

actually wait no. id tell them its okay to abandon projects (and maybe tell them not to make some purchases dgnxngsyn) but ye i spent a while mourning projects because they felt like they ceased to exist, but i had several screenplay outlines that probably helped me a ton. in my writing and those experiences never leave me so their existence still had a purpose and value

tldr: dont write your very recent triggers silly goose, dont cry over abandoned art

94. do you prefer dialogue or description?

i definitely prefer dialogue, and with it action descriptions because i still think in movie-medium (tho i am getting better at understanding how the FUCK prose works and especially prose pacing oh my god why can't i just hold on an actors face for several seconds of silence gAAH!!). i like saying things without saying them, i like subtly building towards something body language until a snap, i looooove making blocking relevant in a medium where you're not even seeing the movement with your eyes, and i love getting into a characters head so far that each person has a different way to word something or a different detail they focus on or a certain tick that tells the other character whats in their head.

but i struggle with internal monologue sooooooo hard, its a practiced skill im actively working on to write a characters internal logic about something but still keeping it from being too on the nose about whats really going on. like i can do it but i struggle to fill page time with it because exploring ideas at least for me usually leads to the source and thats decidedly not where the characters going! its a tuesday afternoon! they're not unpacking shit they're trying to have a third coffee!! i also struggle finding the best words for the reader to feel the text, like idk man maybe im using the onelook dictionary wrong but it just does not get me what im looking for in under three looks zgnshnsyn

tldr: dialogue and blocking, good description is witchcraft

Im very curious to know on your opinion of the video SarahZ made about it now.

ohhh I was very annoyed about that when it came out lol. I think I watched half of it but it was making me too worked up so I stopped halfway through. and I actually used to be a big sarah z fan but I actually stopped following them after that video. nothing personal I'd just remember it exists and get very, very angry.

one of the main things I remember thinking about it was that she says, "it's not like in heathers they just say 'oh this is heather c and she's a bitch'" (paraphrasing) and that sticks out to me because... they do do that in heathers. there is a line in heathers where veronica says "heather chandler, the almighty, she is a mythic bitch". heathers very much did do the thing you're saying it did not do.

from what i can remember, and this may just be my bais showing here, but it felt like a lot of their ciriticisms were in very bad faith. which is ironic because I admired sarah specifically for how they had moved away from bad faith nit-picking content. I remember they had made a criticism about cady being (I think) one dimensional and not having depth and "she just shows up and does stuff" which... is not true? like I can name several characteristics of cady. she's brave and optimistic. she's socially awkward and naive. she's competitive, she's ruthless, at the beginning of the show she prioritises having friends over her morals, something that sets her up perfectly for the arc that follows. like, the entire plot of this musical hinges on the fact that cady grows and changes as a character.

(side note: I feel like the characters in MG are actually quite underrated and the musical mines more depth out of them than the movie does)

I also feel like a lot of the video is Sarah comparing Mean Girls to Heathers and like... we have to accept the fact that while MG and Heathers are similar they are not the same and MG does not have to be a carbon copy of Heathers and this is from someone who likes Heathers more than MG!

and finally I think some of their criticism of the lyrics could've been avoided if they either did what I said in the original post and accepted MG for what it is but also thought about it for more than two seconds. for example, why does janis rhyme cake with cake? is it lazy writing or a subtle way of showing us that janis doesn't actually know what would be at a teenager's party because she has spent so long isolated from her peers with only damian for company? is sexy sexualising teenage girls or poking fun at the oversexulisation of teenage girls? I could make comment about how she claims the lyrics are too 'on the nose' and then proceeds to miss so many points of the lyrics.

but yeah this is all with the note that my bias could definitely be showing because mean girls helped me through such a difficult time. and that I did actually start distancing myself from sarah z's content after that video because yes, I am that petty.

So basically it all comes back to how the director knew very little about the original productions when doing his - this was consistently evident, and very bad when it was bad, but VERY good when it was good. There were a lot of mistakes made that those productions could have warded off, mostly structuring and pacing and aesthetics. I really enjoyed the fact that the set was rlly sparse but it just didn’t work because there was nearly no ensemble, the costumes were weak and did nothing to work with the set + the lighting design was super unimaginative 90% of the time so there was nothing to fill the set and it came across as dull and unambitious rather than complementing any other part of the concept. The lighting issues also really highlighted my other main problem: pacing that made the source material seem worse than it is. It seemed to have some difficulties with how to be a sung-through show, and it KEPT doing my personal theatre pet peeve which is when a moment isn’t allowed to hang for a second to leave space for reactions ie. when pierre presented his challenge in the duel dolokhov responded Immediately, and it fucked any semblance of tension or immersion i was feeling. Happened tons of times and some more lighting work could have helped soften/excuse/grease the way for that. Also, whilst i enjoyed the new vision, it just wasn’t coherent - it felt like the director loved the second half and wanted to go for a gay berlin rave vibe that he clocked in like three numbers but it isn’t actually that present so the world/tone felt messy and unmoored for about half the show. and i don’t think it was objectively the wrong approach, especially because when that vision worked it worked well, but it was absolutely underthought. HOWEVER. I will say first of all it absolutely did not feel soulless to me, and i  think thats down to it being an entirely new interpretation as well. like was it incoherent in a lot of ways? yes. but was there a lovely inspired living little grain at the core of it that can only come from its newness? i feel it would be overly cynical to deny it! im endeared to the elements of mess all the more for the bits of wonderful real electric stuff in there. Which is almost all found in the insane amounts of character work they must have been doing. Natasha is a totally new natasha, rude, direct, investigative - sometimes comes across a bit jarring but generally compelling and she plays super well off other actors, lovely chemistry with everyone. Anatole is incredible, funny and subtle and perfectly timed, plays it manic and pathetic a lot. and I’m so fucking obsessed with their pierre. No one understands. So much muted tired frustration and soooo endearing, SUCH a depressed alcoholic in his 30s and such a nice weird accent. His dust and ashes was insanity, and i think it was so good BECAUSE of its situation in a more empty space. It was less solemn, more angry and kind of convulsive, like a desperate bid to get all the vaguely adolescent feeling out. It’s just clear that the leads have grown these characters from scratch, which i'm sure took fucktons of work and it was so necessary. That’s admittedly less evident with characters like bolkonsky and marya and particularly sonya who is kind of boring. and dolokhov, although slaying and eating everything ever, is kind of mischaracterised in such a way as to render his arc completely incoherent - it totally comes out of nowhere that he’s really the uptight one. And okay. Ultimately it did not come together. I kept thinking it might and i tried to make it so but it didn’t feel like the (to be fair insanely difficult) work of reconceptualising and refocusing was quite finished. Especially since it clearly wanted to detach itself from war & peace and the spectre of a period setting, which is also extremely difficult, if even possible. It was about halfway i think - it put all these lovely characters in a world that wasn’t there yet. But i kind of felt, and this will sound dumb, that it’s the thought that counts. I really did feel with pierre at the end.

“I’m just a little worried that Mike has to have a whole gay realization arc all in the last season”- YALL. PAY ATTENTION THATS WHAT HES BEEN DOING THIS WHOLE TIME:

Season 2: Mike is unaware of what his feelings mean but knows how much he cares about Will, legit spends the whole season being in love with him. By the end at the showball he realizes that somethings up, he doesn’t rlly understand what but he can tell something feels different and he doesn’t like it. Cue part 1 of his realization arc; subconscious denial

Season 3: Subconscious denial is rapidly turning to conscious denial, and at the start of the season we see Mike is in part 2 of his realization arc; a severe case of internalized homophobia. He cycles through it all the way to his absolute lowest point in part 2 (rain fight) and then he slowly comes back from it just a little bit. Then, at the end of the season, we see Mike shift onscreen from part 2 to part 2.5; conscious realization and fear. At this point Mike is halfway through his internalized homophobia arc. He KNOWS how he feels, but it still terrifies him. He grapples with this in the time period between s3 and 4.

Season 4: Ah yes, the penultimate season. The season that sets up endgame. The season that has an *entire gay road-trip plot line dedicated to byler*. This season is part 3 for Mike; acceptance. At first glance you miss it if you’re not looking, since s4 byler was almost entirely from Will’s lovely but very biased POV as he was also going through his own gayangstTM arc at the same time, but all it takes is a second glance to see that it’s there. At the start of the season Mike is on the very last, very flimsy legs of denial, and reuniting with Will again after not speaking for months is what catapults him into the acceptance chunk of his arc. In almost every cali crew scene, we see Mike slowly get closer and closer to total acceptance. We see him accept that he doesn’t love El the way he’d originally thought, he accepts that he loves Will the way he thought he was supposed to love El, and by the van scene, Mike is soso close to accepting that both of these things are okay.

Close being the key word here. Will accidentally throws him off again in volume 2, so Mike’s realization arc isn’t fully concluded yet, things are still very messy and season 5 has a lottt to address. But that’s the THING; season 5, as far as byler goes, actually only needs (for the most part ofc) to address development and realizations that have already happened. A lot of the fandom is really underestimating how much Mike suspects and has realized, at least about himself, and that’s where I think most of the remaining byler doubt is coming from (not including Twitter, we don’t count byler Twitter they do not know shit abt what’s going on 💀).

But that worry is unnecessary! Some of you guys don’t realize how perfect of a plot device Vecna is. I’m saying this as a writer: He’s like a writers dream bc you can basically tell viewers what’s happening in a character’s psyche while still maintaining “show don’t tell.” Bc now? All the writers rlly have to do to start canonifying Mike’s gay realization that has, once again, already happened, is have vecna target him! And they’ve clearly been planning that if that several billion hints in s4 and 3 and EVEN 2 AND 1 are anything to go by 👀👀

Guys, Mike’s *realization* arc is practically FINISHED. The duffers and writers have just been hiding it this whole time by not giving us any Mike POV in s3 or 4 bc they couldn’t confirm Mike before confirming Will, that would make byler endgame wayy too obvious they had to sneak it in there.

But it’s there, and it’s happened. The only thing WE have to worry about now is preparing ourselves for the sheer level of angst that is going to be Mike’s internalized homophobia plot line getting confirmed… I rlly don’t think we’re ready for that. I know IM not 😭

and then there’s ban who engages in a relationship and has children with an actual child “elaine’s thousands of years old!!” that is a CHILD and if you’re attracted to that, and if you think that’s okay, i ask for you to seek help because if you did not feel uncomfortable at all watching his romance boil and kiss someone who looks like she is 6 you have serious issues

the only scene i genuinely like is that one scene in the first season when meliodas and ban reunite and bro so hard they break an indestructible barrier and all their problems were solved yeah man i didnt even need absolute cancel i just threw my bro through 13 different walls and it just busted

then theres the typical anime thing where the men should be twinks but are ripped for no reason. technically this isnt problematic but you seriously cant look at him and think nah man that dude has an 8 pack

that is a twink. and im not sorry

then theres your standard “these characters should have been gay” and then they werent like guila and jericho were a thing at one point and nobody in the world could convince me otherwise 

and there are scenes so laughably bad, like when veronica kisses tiny griamore on the head and he reverts back to normal size except all of his clothes are ripped and hes ass naked. then guila comes in and just. blasts him (this scene was both actually horrible and legendary at the same time)

then this is more of a dub thing but some of the voices are actually so bad. why does zeldris sound like that. that is a short emo man that is not a buff member of the swat team

fanservice is bad too. you cant tell me nerobasta’s back doesnt HURT from those actually gargantuan jugs. i dont even think those are possible. that dress is hanging on for dear life. this doesnt even work you cant trick me into thinking this animes good by putting e cup anime titties in my face

anyway this anime’s a 10/10 i recommend it to uh to uh uh a very large audience

and the movies arent that great either, especially cursed by light because you spend have of this plot lollygagging and then suddenly everythings fine, but youre still halfway through the movie so elizabeths mommy has to descend and start throwing hands and with the power of teamwork the cast defeats this universe’s version of god the only part i like about that movie is the two 10 second scenes where arthur and merlin are present and the whole time they’re just like 🧍 ominously

is there anything i like? plot wise, absolutely not i cant think of anything but i do like some of the characters

diane, while annoying a lot of the time, was genuinely okay. she was my first kin and for that she’s pretty close to my heart. but her intense infatuation with meliodas in the first chunk of the anime actually drove me up a wall, but she does get better

king was pretty great, and while a little bland, i still liked him. hes also dubbed by max mittelman and that just increases my adoration for him

gowther is... gowther. the buildup of a tall muscular man in armor but is actually a pink haired androgynous twink was great i loved that, i cosplayed him in 2020 and i still say “✌️sparkle!” to this day

escanor was pretty cool until he... wasnt... and then im not gonna say any more (rest in peace king)

i liked gilthunder after he was out of his emo phase and even enjoyed him when he was still in it. the circumstances of his villain arc were generally stupid as well as confusing and vivian’s existence gets on my nerves but gil was cool, along with howzer, who is probably one of the most horrendous looking characters ive ever seen (as controversial as that statement is) but at least hes funny. theyre also voiced by robbie daymond and ray chase, so if youre a persona fan, like, come on this duo is iconic (duo. i have a strong dislike of griamore and to my concern he does not exist)

merlin, i liked merlin. i liked merlin. a lot. for reasons. for a lot of reasons. she was she was uh and her character arc and backstory was um... i liked merlin yes i did

okay i cant not talk about arthur anymore. i love arthur. hes my little closeted ginger homosexual guy and he’s just great. he has actually zero idea whats happening at any given time but still is op as all hell, and i just love him. he has a baby face and is dubbed by zach aguilar so its really hard for me to not just want to hug him when he died that extremely brutal death i just sat there like ☹️ come on man thats not cool you cant kill off the best character and expect me to keep watching this

yeah thats right i never even finished it. i was a huge sds fan in like 2018 when season 4 and season 5 werent out yet, and then i stopped liking it, and when they did come out, i never finished. i watched a couple general scenes, and im very aware of the plot and what happens after the point i stopped watching and as much of a hate watcher i am there is no way that those last couple seasons are even sort of worth my time. ill watch the movies whenever they come out but... i cant handle any more than that.

anyway seven deadly sins is actually horrible and nobody should watch it unless its the filler episodes where the characters sit around and complain all day because those have the capability of being fun
